STUDY ABROAD The opportunity to study abroad can be a life-changing experience that allows students to develop skills that will enhance their future employment prospects and enrich their lives.

Studying abroad can be a fulfilling part of a well-rounded liberal arts degree, and I am hopeful that all Georgia College students will give serious thought to engaging in the opportunity to study abroad at some point in their university experience.

Congratulations on taking the first step towards a once-in-a-lifetime international experience.

You can study abroad for a few weeks, a semester, or even an entire academic year! The key is to plan early. The steps below will guide you through the process. Get started and bon voyage!

1.

Attend a Study Abroad Info Session, held Monday-Thursday at 2 p.m.

This 20-30 minute session covers the basics you want to know, including how to choose a program, earning credits, financial aid, scholarships, and much more. We will meet Mondays and Tuesdays in Chappell Hall 102, and on Wednesdays and Thursdays we will meet in Teams.

Search for study abroad programs at www.gcsu.edu/studyabroad.

Select “Program Search” in the Important Links section.

•

“Program Discovery” allows you to type in key words or locations.

•

“Featured Programs” takes you to a list of programs run by GC faculty and staff.

•

To search for semester, year, or other programs, use the “Advanced Search” tab.

PROGRAM

TYPES Exchange – Students take courses at a university abroad with local faculty.

Students pay tuition to GC and other expenses separately to the appropriate vendors. This is the most affordable study abroad experience as the cost is very similar to that of on-campus study. Most programs are offered for the full semester or academic year, though some options for shorter stays exist. For all exchange programs, contact the Assistant Director of Education Abroad, Liz Havey (liz.havey@gcsu.edu), for more details.

GC-Led – Package programs led by GC professors/staff with site-specific learning objectives. Program charges, paid to the International Education Center, typically include accommodations and other in-country expenses. For academic programs, students pay tuition separately to their GC student account.

USG Partners – Package programs hosted by the University System of Georgia (USG). Students pay package charges, typically including airfare, accommodations, and other in-country expenses, to the host and their tuition to their GC student account.

Direct Billing – Package programs that offer a range of courses through one of GC’s pre-approved study abroad providers. Charges and inclusions vary greatly by program. Providers invoice GC for the package charges, which is posted to the GC student account to maximize student access to financial aid.

Internship and Service Learning – Work-based learning experiences abroad.
