FMR 2012 Recap Fall SST 2012 Recap

Happy New Year Everyone!

As we start this brand new year off, let us all push ourselves to be the best people that we can be. I’m not talking just about what we do as servant leaders through CKI, but also in our schooling and other aspects of our lives. As we strive to become the person that we are pushing to become through our schooling and education, let us remember that our ultimate goal should be to get out and make a difference in the lives of those around us. The Circle K year is coming to an end and as such it is about to be time for a new district board to lead Georgia Circle K. Anyone that is a dues paid member of any CKI club in Georgia can run for a position on the district board. At our district convention (DCON) in February we will be electing our new leaders.

The positions that are voted on at DCON are the following: District Governor, District Secretary, District Treasurer, District Bulletin Editor, and Divisional Lt Governor (there are 5 for the separate divisions of the district). I want to encourage each club to send at least 2 members to DCON as the voting delegates to help elect the new leaders for the district. I would also like to encourage anyone that is interested in stepping up to run for one of the above positions, to do so as you are not required to have any past board experience to run for any of these positions.

In closing I would like to share a quote from a friend that I met in Germany, while serving a mission between my freshmen and sophomore years of college. While there, I had a personal goal of doing my best to serve those who were around me. In my service I heard a great quote that I have tried to live up to since and that is “nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” I think that this is something that we can all learn from and strive to live by. As we strive to be great servant leaders in our areas building up our communities please remember to help others feel that you care about them and their wellbeing. Let them see that you care about them and they will listen and work with you.

Growth Update from

Kristi Parker And the GA CKI Growth Committee The Georgia District has been working hard towards building new clubs this fall semester. We are happy to announce that after many months of revisions to the constitution, many meetings, and lots of “red tape,” the student activities board at Armstrong Atlantic State University has finally approved the start of an Armstrong Circle K Club. We plan to start meetings and officially charter at the beginning of the spring semester. Ogeechee Technical College is also working towards starting a club and almost has everything in place to begin meetings as soon as possible.

I am really looking forward to seeing what all this new semester has to offer and can’t wait to see you all at DCON.

Georgia District Divisions The state of Georgia is broken up into smaller sections called “divisions.” Each division is elected a Lieutenant Governor (LTG) at Georgia’s District Convention (DCON), which is held every year.

Though elections occur annually, it is not guaranteed that each division will be elected a Lieutenant Governor. Clubs that are in each division are overseen and advised by the elected Lieutenant Governor. Check out the 5 Divisions in Georgia!

LTG Updates Mountains Division By: Mountains LTG Christine Mayfield As the school year began, there was a small number of clubs in the Mountains Division; however, this year has been a chance for clubs to start anew. We have had a few clubs so far that are in the process of joining the Georgia District of Circle K. Best wishes goes out to them in their development in becoming part of our Circle K family.

Young Harris College has been doing a few things this semester for the community. YHC has been raising some money for the Eliminate Project as well as assisting the Kiwanis with Festival work and awareness for 9/11. They also baked cookies and passed them out to all the police and fire stations in the area. In the Mountains Division, there is confidence that next semester will be even better. As a final point, all the colleges that are trying to have a Circle K club will become part of the Georgia Circle K District Family. Please welcome them with open arms and give them the best of hope.

Perimeter Division By: Perimeter LTG Anand Singh Oxford College Circle K began in 1953, making it one of the oldest clubs on Oxford's campus and in the Perimeter Division. Although it began as a service club, it transitioned to a social club, the near equivalent to a fraternity, in 2003. With this status as a social club came an image which the current club's president, Nicole Goetz, has worked to change. Just last year, the club removed itself from the social club scene, returning to a full service club.

Since Oxford is a two year college with its graduates moving to the Emory campus afterwards, most incoming freshmen do not even know that the club was ever a social club. This has allowed the club to reach new heights in membership and greater focus on the mission of Circle K. The club has over 65 members this year and has worked to serve the community through many programs. Oxford college is involved with projects including the Miracle Baseball League, a baseball league for special needs children. The club is also active with a local animal shelter, PAWS Atlanta. Some more recent activities in light of Christmas include caroling for Merryville Nursing Home and holding a fashion show for the citizens of the Legacy Woods Nursing Home. Goetz has high aspirations for the club, hoping it continues to grow as she prepares to pass the reigns over to the current freshmen and for events such as Relay for Life in the Spring semester.

Metro Division By: Metro Division LTG Simi Oludare Hello Georgia District! Hope you all had a great semester and are having a wonderful holiday. As the Lieutenant Governor of the Metro Division, it is my pleasure to share with you the current and interesting activities of the clubs in my division. Since my last article in the Kronicle, I have had the opportunity to visit and establish contact with more of the clubs in my division. This has been a great experience for me and I have been able to learn about how different clubs operate. A particularly interesting thing that I was able to learn from one of our clubs is the family system. I learned this from the University of West Georgia (UWG) Circle K club and it is a very good way of building fellowship in clubs. The way the family system works is by having various members of the club who don’t know each other too well form a team and that team becomes a ‘family.’ Whenever this family does an activity together, they get a point and by the end of the semester the winning team gets a prize. And during my visit to UWG Circle K it was clear to see the impact of having this system in place; the club members shared a strong bond that should be a characteristic of all Circle K clubs. So in the New Year I strongly encourage all clubs to try some variation of this system and the product will be a stronger fellowship among club members. Once more I will like to say have a happy holiday and also get ready for a great new year!

In thanks to our prized secretary, Katie Chambers of University of West Georgia Circle K, we dedicate this article to her extraordinary efforts. Tackling every task with precision and skill, Katie does above and beyond her duties as a Circle K’er.

Juggling a full load with school and a job, she still manages to dutifully and enthusiastically record our minutes, submit our club monthly reports, and participate in our service projects.

Not only is she a valued member, but her exceptional character stands out above all. Selflessness, dedication, and compassion are just a few of her key qualities. Without question, she is what an exemplary Circle K’er and human being should be.

Oxford CKI has done a fantastic job reorganizing the club from the problems that it has had over the last several years and pushed their members to help raise money for ELIMINATE. Last semester, the school had a competition to see which organization would walk the most for their chosen charity and in overwhelming numbers CKI at Oxford came out and ran more than 30 hours raising $327 for ELIMINATE. Their club leadership is energetic and, their club is one of the most amazing I have ever seen.

What an honor and privilege it was to have those of you who came to FMR this year!

From icebreakers like “Signs,” to winning candy in Circle K Trivia, the weekend saw a spirit of fellowship among all. By the time we started our teambuilding activity Saturday night, an egg drop challenge, you worked so well together that every single group completed the challenge without a crack! The weekend also saw the first FMR dance in a few years, which thanks to all of you was a happy success! While some took a break and bought snacks for the ELIMINATE project, others joined in songs like “Gangnam Style” and danced the night away. We also had plenty of workshops with useful lessons to take back to our clubs and to life after college. Congratulations to those of you who completed your CWL’s! CWLs, Certified Workshop Leader certificates qualify CKI’ers to lead workshops at any Circle K event. The Georgia District only offers CWL training at FMR, so if you haven’t, get certified at the next opportunity! In addition to learning more about the district and Circle K International as a whole, everyone was able to hear from Circle K’ers in similar situations as themselves and learn from each other’s experience in round table discussions. On their down time, Circle K’ers took joy in the simple things— competitive games of football and Ultimate Frisbee, writing letters to new friends, board games, and late night runs to Waffle House. A big thanks to all of you who came, and to our special guest Jerome Johnson, our Subregion G trustee all the way from Jamaica! Thank you for making this a wonderful experience! I hope to see you next year!

By: SST Chair Lori Gonzalez Hey Everyone! Thank you to all the clubs who came out and made this year’s Fall SST so amazing! Friday night we lived up to the theme of the weekend “Tis the Season to Serve” with an arts and crafts service project where we made Christmas ornaments for children at Tanner Medical Center to hang up in their room to make it feel a little bit more like Christmas. Saturday morning we started off with a hot chocolate social at Katie Chambers’ apartment, and then headed out to the Habitat for Humanity build where we finished up painting their fundraiser location and helped build a split rail wooden fence.

After we enjoyed a delicious lunch at American Pie Pizzeria and received our t-shirts we went to Pine Knoll Nursing and Rehab Facility where we raked leaves and laid down pine straw in the enclosed park so that its patients would have a better view and place to relax. We ended up the day with the exotic animals petting zoo on the University of West Georgia campus. There we had the opportunity to pet a camel and a wolf and hold a hedgehog and a snake, plus many more! I can’t wait for Spring SST!!

Georgia District Service Initiative: Playground Project By: Victoria Byrd, District Service Chair The most fundamental part of children being active is having a safe place to play.

The Playground Project was created in 2001 in conjunction with project HEALTHY to help with its mission. The playground project has two components: raise funds to build playgrounds and cleaning, painting, fixing, and equipping existing playgrounds. Some things you can do to help out with this service initiative are cutting the grass, trimming the bushes and shrubbery, paint fences and the buildings at the playground, fix the railings, remove limbs and broken equipment from the playground, rake the leaves, plant flowers, and raise money for new playing equipment for the playground. There are playgrounds all over, but sadly some of the playgrounds you cannot play at because the equipment is not safe for the kids. So get out and help make the playgrounds safer for kids to play at in your community!

International Service Initiative: The Eliminate Project By: Victoria Byrd, District Service Chair With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every nine minutes, nearly 60,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating and tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110 million and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. To help out this service initiative you can make Eliminate pins, which are pins made out of "It's a boy" and/or" It's a girl" ribbon with a life saver attached to it and pass them out. As you are passing them out you can tell people about them and ask for donations. This is a good way to raise money for this initiative, but you can do just about anything to help raise money for this initiative.

Dues Reminder I hope everyone had a good winter break and that you are ready to start another semester full of service, leadership, and fellowship. Just another reminder about dues. Four year schools with over 5,000 students need to pay a $600 club fee and $9 per member. Two year schools and four year schools with less than 5,000 students need to pay a $450 club fee and $9 per member.
