curveball to say the least, but I am so thankful for my GWA family and their exceeding efforts to still make us feel special and celebrated during this exciting time in our lives. For their love and support, I had the closure that was needed to end this chapter in my life and start the next. I started to make a senior video at the beginning of the school year and looking

back at all the clips, it seems so surreal. I would do anything to go back and relive those moments with the people I’ve grown up with over the past 12 years. GWA, thank you for the opportunities, memories and lessons you’ve provided me during my time walking your hallways. Your small campus, yet large community that I now call family, will always have a piece of my heart.”

There’s no doubt that students look forward to their final semester of school with excitement and great anticipation. Afterall, there’s so much to look forward to: prom, senior week activities, graduation, and celebrating with family and friends. But for the Class of 2020, senior year was beyond anything they ever imagined. It seemed to come out of nowhere: COVID-19. And it turned the world upside down. Homes

became classrooms. Events were cancelled. Plans were changed. Everyone was separated from one another. And of course, there were tears, fears and disappointments. Yes, it was beyond anything any of us imagined – but in positive ways too. Our seniors discovered they were more resilient than they thought. And they are more creative, innovative and solutionoriented. They quickly adapted to online learning and finished the year strong. They are now CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

the life skills they are teaching are “sticking”. Above all, teachers want each of their students to graduate equipped and prepared for college and beyond. If any of us ever wondered whether the Class of 2020 would be up to the challenge, we have our answer. The way these seniors responded to the obstacles and hard knocks delivered by the pandemic reassures us that they are more than ready for college and life. They rose to the challenge in amazing ways that went far beyond anything we imagined.

It is truly incredible to see what we accomplished our senior year, especially over the last few months. Of course, it was not the way any of us planned to end our high school careers, but we have overcome extreme obstacles and pushed through to the finish line. We have come together as a class, as a school, and most importantly, as a family. Seasons ended short, and events

got cancelled, but that did not stop our faculty and staff from working hard to still give us our senior experience. We all received signs in our yard, and spring sports coaches still did a virtual senior night for all of the senior athletes. I am so happy to be able to go to a school where employees will go to extraordinary measures for the students. That is what has always

set GWA apart from the rest: their will to go above and beyond for us.

the amazing teachers and students I met. Most of all, I will never forget the friends I made in ways and in places I never imagined.

Coming into a new environment with people I would only know for a year, I honestly didn’t expect to receive much acknowledgment at all from my new peers. I went in thinking that my fellow seniors who had probably known each other for most of their lives would do their own thing together, and I would be a tag-along who would not contribute and would just quietly watch things unfold. EXPANDING HORIZONS THROUGH GLOBAL STUDIES

By Femke Côté | Associate Head of School for Curriculum and Global Studies Last year, if someone had told me that we would (1) spend the last three months of this past school year online, (2) cancel all spring/summer trips and (3) reconsider all of our travel for 2020-2021, I would have scoffed and said, “no way!” And yet: here we are.

However, as the disappointment of cancelled trips begins to fade, and the uncertainty of upcoming trips continues, there is much to celebrate at GWA in terms of global studies. This past year saw continued growth in our exchange programs with our sister schools as we welcomed students to campus from France, Germany, and Spain. For the second time, we sent students to Belize

to work alongside medical fellows from Duke University and Johns Hopkins University as part of an ongoing effort to provide basic medical attention to rural communities. We look forward to sending a group for the third time this upcoming year and continuing to strengthen our partnership with those institutions as we help students find their purpose and passion. EXPANDING HORIZONS THROUGH GLOBAL STUDIES In light of COVID-19 and the international political situation (and because it would be irresponsible to send students abroad during a global pandemic), we are introducing more concentrated efforts to capture our global studies experience in the classroom. Students will have the opportunity to choose from five new English/social studies classes that are directly linked to global perspectives

as part of their elective options. Additionally, we are exploring ways to create “global classrooms” by linking courses taught at GWA with courses taught at our partner schools in an effort to better understand the current situation from multiple angles and put our students in touch with real faces and voices who are experiencing the same kind of “different” as them. While we may have to press pause on

WINTER TERM OPENS DOORS TO EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY For nearly 300 students, the 2020 “Dawg Days Winter Term provided a unique experience that most kids (and even adults) would envy. A group from GWA traveled to Belize to work on medical missions alongside students from Duke and Johns Hopkins Universities. Some students went to Virginia to learn about history during the colonial era. Still others participated in our global exchange program, spending time in Spain or France. Juniors and seniors were able to participate in internships throughout Georgia as well as in other parts of the country. 63 students completed three-week long internships in various locations including Tennessee, South Carolina, New York, Utah, and Montana. Students studied with mentors in fields such as business, medicine, hospitality, education, and music. They gained valuable experience that either reinforced a desire to pursue a specific career or gave insight to continue exploring different opportunities. Some students engaged in unique experiences on campus that differed from the traditional everyday

curriculum. They could choose from a wide range of courses including Money Management, Virtual Reality, Revolutionizing Your Spiritual Life, Rocket Science and Space Flight, Furniture Restoration, Hand Tools and Woodworking Joinery, Backpacking, Science of Skydiving, Etiquette, and many others. These courses gave students opportunities to learn skills or step outside of their comfort zones to learn and experience something new. We believe that this program allows students to grow and gain knowledge and experiences that they otherwise might miss out on.

We look forward to continuing with our Winter Term program and all of the new and exciting opportunities that the 2020-2021 school year has to offer.

REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE

CASE STUDY: TWO STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES ON THEIR CIVIL ENGINEERING INTERNSHIPS “I learned the importance of always checking and revising my work. I worked on a building and pavement layout plan, and every time I thought I was finished, I found a way to make my project better. My favorite aspect of the internship was creating the first draft of my project because I got to be creative and design something original.”

– JOE BROWN

“My internship reinforced that civil engineering is what I want to pursue. I learned that there is always another way to look at a situation, especially when designing a site plan because everyone has different ideas. I enjoyed working on my mock site plan for the new GWA expansion with a new theater and upper school building. Although it is just a design for fun, it really put into perspective how much detail and design goes into creating a site plan and how much there is to perfect.”

will equip these young students as they advance in school, college, and beyond. Even at a young age, students begin to learn about citizenship and can respectfully recite The Pledge of Allegiance. They are taught to practice good manners, the importance of sharing, communication skills, how to follow directions, and they begin to develop independence through exercises such as learning how to pack and unpack a backpack.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN It all begins at the age of three as eager students begin exploration and discovery. “If you were to spend the day with our youngest bulldogs, you would leave feeling exhausted, but smarter!” said Jenny Duke, director of curriculum for the Lower School. Starting with Pre-K3, students learn how to spell, write their own first names, as well as count and recognize numbers using a calendar. They also use numbers during their technology time as they learn how to code. Three-year-old kids coding? You bet!

Curriculum for pre-kindergarten classes encompasses far more than traditional reading, writing and arithmetic. Teachers emphasize life skills that

“A favorite for all is show-and-tell as they ask each other questions about the special objects they brought from home,” said Duke. “It’s rarely quiet when they are enthusiastically working on nursery rhymes, singing songs or having a dance party. One thing that you will always see is joy on their faces because they want to be there every single day.”

After reading “The Gingerbread Man,” first-graders were challenged to build a raft or boat that would keep the gingerbread man safe and dry. As part of a STEM exercise, students first drew their designs, and then were given straws, tape, and a gingerbread man. They worked together and used the supplies to bring their unique designs to life. After a 15-minute work session, the class tested their designs and every group successfully kept their gingerbread man dry! They took the lesson to the next level by brainstorming how they could redesign the rafts to be even more weightbearing.

LOWER SCHOOL Teachers often incorporate technology to go beyond the traditional classroom and enhance lessons by inviting guests to interact virtually via Google Meet. When first-grade students were studying a geography unit, they reached out to people who were living abroad or have previously lived outside the United States to learn more about life beyond our borders. Emily Nunnally shared her experiences teaching second grade in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Students were able to see how U.S. schools are similar and different to Thai schools. Chef Mondrekio Robertson, a graduate from Monroe Area High School, who has worked in various restaurants across the United States, as well as internationally on cruise ships, taught the students how to make peanut butter and jellystuffed French toast. Whenever we think about lessons from school that really “stuck”, chances are there were hands-on activities involved.

Fourth-grade students didn’t just learn about Native American cultures from a textbook, they attended the Stone Mountain Native American Pow Wow Festival for in-person study of authentic shelters, weapons, music, food, and ceremonies.

THE ROARING 20’s... AND ALL THAT JAZZ During their study of the Roaring 20’s, fifth-grade students were fully immersed in the lesson as they researched an influential person who is part of the fabric of our country. There were musicians, scientists, athletes, performers, and presidents who all came together for a wax museum

presentation. Instead of simply reading about these famous people, they brought them to life! The students not only dressed up as a likeness of each person, they took on their persona and interacted with visitors and even signed autographs!”

MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL In the last three years, GWA has introduced new courses in science, social studies and English in the Upper School, and better aligned the

curriculum in all disciplines to better meet the mission statement in the Middle School. A dance program, American Sign Language, and a variety of art classes were introduced in response to student interest. Additional faculty were hired to enhance offerings in technology and engineering. A new Inquiry Program in the Upper School opens the door for students to take part in an independently curated research project that allows

“At George Walton Academy, we are consistently engaged in conversations surrounding our purpose as a school and evaluating how we can better prepare students to make a positive impact in a changing world,” said Femke Côté, Associate Head of School for Curriculum and Global Studies. “For us, that means taking advantage of every opportunity to maximize a student’s time on our campus through experiential learning, signature programs, and an academic plan that prioritizes flexibility and student choice.”

them to take a deep dive into a topic of their choice. “We have transformed classrooms into “surgical floors” to learn the order of operations and used 3D printers to build parts for hypothetical space rovers stranded on the moon,” said Femke Côté. “We have enrolled a record number of students in all divisions in our piano program and will roll out a brand-new guitar program in the fall which we expect will enjoy the same success.” An upper school intensive was held for the third time this year, with students meeting experts from around the country as they explored the topic of water. THE PARC

The Place for Academic Reinforcement & Coaching The PARC supports all students by equipping them with the learning strategies and skills necessary to be successful, continuous learners. Academic coaches, peer tutors and resources are available to support each student’s needs and goals.

WRITING CENTER

This student-centered resource provides consultations that focus on the student writer’s questions, concerns, and writing process. Students have a space to think about and reflect on their writing while working alongside a trained writing consultant. Additionally, upper school students are able to receive help on their college/scholarship/application essays, personal creative writing, and/or assigned writing.

MATH LAB

The adaptive math lab debuts for the 2020-2021 school year. A faculty member and peer tutors will be available for students during their study hall. The lab will also offer “drop in” hours for extra help and a series of classes will be offered on a rotating basis. students a better understanding of one of the biggest challenges the state and the world is expected to face over the next 50 years. Through the intensive study, students learned how they can better position themselves to be part of the solution rather than the problem. The 2019-2020 school year also presented a unique set of challenges and opportunities as students and teachers navigated moving school online during the COVID-19 outbreak. “Transitioning from an in-person experience to a virtual platform stretched our knowledge of technology and teaching and presented us with a steep learning curve that forced us to confront in a very intentional way

the “how” of what we do every day,” explained Côté. “It taught us resilience and made us better teachers and learners as we had to adapt to an evolving situation. Online teaching and learning, while not what we had signed up for, offered students the time to practice two important skills that will be invaluable in their lives going forward: how to be productive independently and how to work well in a group. On the one hand, students were more on their own than they ever had to be in the past, while on the other hand, it opened doors for more collaboration between students as teachers found creative ways to adapt their curriculum to a new format. In both cases, we saw students mature in their ability to take ownership of their educational journey

and become better thinkers and doers. “Everything that we introduced this year and that the pandemic crisis presented us with forced us to be more focused and go beyond in our communication, vision, availability and ultimately, beyond our comfort zone. As we continue to enhance the curriculum in the 2020-2021 school year with the introduction of new courses and experiences, we are excited to see how we grow and develop in fresh ways as we look to the future,” said Côté.

ORDER OF OPERATIONS An innovative sixth-grade exercise enabled students to roll up their sleeves and gain knowledge in multiple subjects. In the Order of Operations Operating Room, students consulted with other

“surgeons” to solve expressions to help determine what operations their patients required. In English, students wrote their own mathematical expressions and used them as the framework to write original short stories. Social studies students worked as archaeologists to identify artifacts and fossils from the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras. In science, the students acted as pharmacists using laboratory skills, problem solving, and data analysis.

What an exciting and unique year it’s been! Coming off 2019-2020, when we experienced record enrollment and school growth, you’d think it would be hard to top that excitement…yet here we are mid-summer tracking enrollment numbers that are ahead of those from this time last year. As a parent of a GWA student and the director of information technology, I was originally worried when we began to make plans for distance learning, weeks before we closed. How could my son, enrolled in K4, continue to learn, play, socialize and explore in a way even remotely similar to his experiences at school? How could classes in the Upper School continue without overwhelming students and faculty as they navigate a brand-new learning platform? Thankfully, I believe we got it right. With the foresight of an administrative team who plans for every possible obstacle, we communicated and trained our community to move the goal post forward. With every unforeseen obstacle, faculty and students managed to overcome and go above and beyond to achieve a George Walton standard of education and connection. Our academic and technology plan came together with the ingenuity and support of a passionate group of Bulldogs. With the priority of our community’s safety and security

in mind, Dr. Dolan, Femke Côté, Matt Reynolds, Jenny Duke, Lynn Robinson and I collaborated on a plan we hoped would work for our community. We had some stumbles. We wanted a plan that could work for everyone, but some good ideas were simply not scalable to the entire school or could only fit a

specific classroom. We attempted to navigate these gaps which we quickly modified, or moved on to other options. Everyone agreed on a few points: that whatever systems we used had to be simple, device agnostic, and everyone had to follow the same protocol.

Without a guidebook, we decided that Middle and Upper School would use Google Meets for the synchronous classroom meetings. We hoped that a schedule that allowed for some breathing room, but connected our classroom instruction with each highly qualified instructor, would maintain some of the dynamic learning our kids are accustomed to experiencing each day. We began training immediately, weeks before we closed campus. While hardly ideal, I am so pleased that by the time we closed, I helped to train every middle and upper school faculty member on Google Meets. (some teachers even came to multiple trainings!) For the Lower School, we decided to use Seesaw as an asynchronous platform to provide parents the flexibility to set their own child’s schedule and work at whatever pace worked best for their family. As a working parent, I personally appreciated being able to work during the day to support our team while helping to guide my son’s learning in the evenings or during down times at home.

Thankfully, many of our lower school teachers were already using Seesaw for parent notifications, and Mark Gasaway, our lower school technology teacher had been using Seesaw with just about every lower school student for a variety of projects. With Mark’s guidance to help deepen teachers’ knowledge on Seesaw, we were fortunate that the learning curve was quite low. After we began the distance learning, Google Meets was introduced to the Lower School as well, to offer additional live meetings with the teacher for story time, tutoring, and socialization. For us, I know how much my son looked forward to seeing his teachers’ videos every day, confirming our own feelings about George Walton. We are forever grateful in finding this community, to the people who are helping to raise and teach our son, and for the connections we have at GWA. With the ongoing support of a large body of volunteers, as well as faculty and students who would be on call to assist when needed, we endeavored to handle all problems as quickly as possible. My personal

hope was that students and parents would not be burdened by the technology. I want to personally thank the volunteers who helped me to provide the care and attention everyone deserved during this time: Todd Gregory, Mark Gasaway, Natalia Chapar, Dominic Williams, Jason Lam, Victor Lazich, Isaiah Strong, Jackson Treadaway, George Zupko, Paula Gerhardt, Heather Dokes, Tanya Rainford and Ashley Short. These were the people who assisted me in answering emails, resetting passwords, troubleshooting issues, and listening to anyone who experienced a setback during this unprecedented time. If it wasn’t for them, this endeavor may not have been as successful as it was. Thank you. As we look toward the fall, we will take what we learned about our community’s tenacity and industriousness into our future. Our GWA faculty members not only sharpened their skills on these digital tools, but they set a new standard in the wider community and our nation. While schools across the country failed to provide even a semblance of normality, our faculty members seamlessly created learning opportunities in this vacuum. Our parents learned how to navigate this new digital world. From the beginning to the end of distance learning, our lower school teachers amassed over 73,000 posts while parents checked in on their child’s learning more than 8,000 times using the parent app. This level of engagement is truly profound, and I cannot wait to see how our teachers and students take all they learned during Digital Days to go beyond what they ever imagined possible.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been many who have stepped up to do their part to support those on the front lines. Students, teachers and GWA families continue to roll up their sleeves and use their imaginations to make a difference. #gwadowhatyoucan

I was inspired by a post I saw on Instagram of an individual printing 3-D face masks to donate to healthcare workers. Seeing what this single person was doing with one printer at home, I thought about how much I could do with the resources we had sitting idle at the school. We recently purchased three PRUSA printers that were designed and built by Josef Prusa. In response to the Covid-19 outbreak and the shortage of protective wear for medical professionals, he designed and developed an open-source face shield that anyone with a 3-D printer could produce. He also compiled a list of best practices to keep the shields sanitary to prevent crosscontamination from occurring. As many people know, these shields are not only useful to hospital workers and other first responders including police officers and firemen, but they are also needed in nursing homes, dentists’ offices or even by grocery store staff. I will continue to produce masks as long as there is a need. Right now, just doing what you can goes a long way in helping others.

MASKS MADE WITH LOVE A big shout out goes to the GWA community! My friend and local seamstress, Denise Powell, organized a large group effort to sew face masks (the pattern was designed by an RN) for local hospitals. She asked me if I had any cotton fabric to donate to the cause. After contributing whatever fabric I had, I reached out to the GWA faculty and staff thinking others might want an opportunity to donate as well, and did they ever!

As a result of the many donations, I was able to pass along a considerable amount of fabric to my friend. Thanks to the effort and generosity of all involved, her sewing group created and delivered a large quantity of masks to both Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Northeast Georgia Health System. This shows how the small actions of many can have a large impact. Thanks again to all who contributed in supporting healthcare workers during this difficult time.

EXPRESSING GRATITUDE GWA National Honors Society and Beta Club members teamed up with Chaco to send letters to healthcare workers. Chaco, the sandal company, converted some of their factory operations to aid in the production of protective masks for healthcare workers. GWA students wrote and mailed notes of encouragement to accompany masks provided by Chaco.

ALUMNI

GWA Graduates SHARE STORIES OF THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 By Christina Russell | Director of Communications It comes as no surprise that George Walton Academy alumni are the extension and embodiment of our school’s mission. They are engaged intellectually, driven by curiosity, and guided by purpose. It is always exciting to share news about the diverse paths they have chosen and pursued with great success. In early spring of this year, our world changed in dramatic ways as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold and altered nearly every aspect of daily life. Four of our alumni share their stories and describe the impact of the coronavirus crisis on their jobs and personal lives. Meet Elyse Sims, Greg Gray, Claudia Ramos and Bethany Leggett.

FROM THE FRONT LINES | CLAUDIA RAMOS ‘96 During the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown, Claudia Ramos ’96 spent her time like many of us, connecting with family and friends through video chats, phone calls, and emails. She enjoyed taking walks and making homemade meals while creating a daily routine. As a mental health clinician working in an emergency room in Charlotte, North Carolina, Claudia knows plenty about the importance of using coping skills to improve mental well-being, especially during uncertain times. Claudia treats patients suffering from a wide range of clinical issues. COVID-19 added to those presentations and created a different level of care and safety. She utilized masks, goggles, shields, social distancing, and plenty of handwashing as safety precautions while on the job and took extra steps to prepare for leaving work and returning home. Claudia has not been able to visit her family in Georgia since the onset of the pandemic. She sees the effects of stress from the changes the coronavirus spread has brought to society. Claudia commented, “Overall, it is the feeling of unpredictability that has created anxiety and depression with the uncertainty in what will happen next and when will we get back to normal.” Isolation, schedule changes and safety concerns bring about emotional highs and lows, but Claudia remarked, “We will see hope and strength to get through this time. Finding positive outlets and using coping skills will be important.” We are incredibly grateful for the heroes working to protect and save lives during a global pandemic. Their dedication and courage are something we all praise, and it shows us that the human spirit is resilient. Claudia believes we will have a greater awareness of our own mental health as a result of living through the COVID-19 crisis. She sees a positive long-term effect from our collective experience, “Our mental health will be seen differently and knowing and recognizing mental health needs is a reminder of how we need to continue to take care of our wellbeing.”

While working from home, Bethany successfully managed to create a daily routine that gave her a worklife balance. She explained, “Wake Forest offers free wellness coaching, so I had a drop-in virtual session with the wellness coach, who helped me structure my days which feel more balanced and has given me stamina to sustain this stay-at-home order. It’s important to establish a new rhythm in this environment where home/ work are not easy to distinguish from each other.” Bethany has made a point to reach out to friends, “Four of us GWA alumni did a Zoom chat a few weeks ago to “see” how everyone was doing. Since we all live in separate states, it was nice to dedicate a moment to check in with each other and have a proper catchup.” During the spring semester, the academic community quickly transitioned from on-campus learning to online education, as stay at home directives were put in place. As a communications specialist at Wake Forest University, Bethany Leggett ’06, experienced a major shift in her daily responsibilities. Normally, Bethany handles all internal communications between the Dean’s Office, faculty, and staff, as well as some communication with students and external audiences. She handles social media for the Dean’s Office, writes speeches, maintains the college website, and collaborates on communication strategies with other campus partners. But as Wake Forest moved to remote learning, Bethany’s focus turned to crisis communication. She described the quick turnaround

in the means of communication and a more immediate timetable, “The Dean’s Office prioritized opening more lines of communication to faculty and staff by increasing our newsletters to a weekly production schedule, and created a new website strictly devoted to faculty transitioning their coursework to remote teaching. We sent letters to our students and faculty in alignment with larger University policies that were being distributed. Communication has been critical at this time.” “This has been the greatest disruption in higher education during peacetime in the modern era,” Bethany acknowledged. Colleges and universities are facing financial shortfalls as campuses have shut down, endowments have diminished,

Bethany took a leap of faith, last year when she took the position at Wake Forest, switching from a career in journalism to higher education communications. Having worked through the COVID-19 crisis gave her reassurance that it was the right move. “It’s moments like these when we see how people and organizations respond. I have witnessed strong leadership go hand-in-hand with compassion.” She wonders what the fall will look like and knows that freshmen will have a different first semester experience. But Bethany knows, “We will get through this together and be stronger contributors to the world and humanity because of it.”

sporting events have been canceled, and refunds have been processed for room and board. However, Bethany is hopeful, “While we don’t know what this fall will look like right now, I am grateful that Wake Forest is one of the countless institutions that are developing scenarios for fall that will hold fast to the academic mission while keeping students, faculty, and staff safe. There is a path forward and there are a lot of great minds dedicated to finding a way through.”

CHERISHING CONNECTIONS | THE REVEREND DR. GREG GRAY ‘99 34

Places of worship have been especially impacted by the social distancing and stay at home orders brought about by the COVID-19 crisis. The Reverend Dr. Greg Gray ’99 has led his church members at the Enfield Congregational Church in Enfield, Connecticut through the necessary changes, as the paradigm of practicing one’s faith has shifted. His congregation no longer gathered in the pews but engaged virtually. Dr. Gray held Sunday services, morning prayer and bible study online, using Zoom

and Facebook. While mostly working from home, he did broadcast from the sanctuary during Holy Week, an especially challenging time for the pastor. He commented, “There have been good days and bad days. I really look forward to a big celebration when we can physically be together.” The church is following the state guidelines for reopening. This will happen in phases and places of worship were slated to open as part of phase two, which began on June 20. “As permitted by the guidelines, we will

be allowed to have 50 members in the sanctuary during phase two. So, we will need to adjust our services to make that work, possibly providing an additional service on Sunday,” explained Dr. Gray. The Enfield community has turned to the church for support and comfort. Dr. Gray has seen an increase in the number of members joining the Zoom events as the weeks progressed. Their food pantry typically served 70-80 people prior to the pandemic, but now the needs have grown with over 200 people in need of

food support. Dr Gray said, “The church is there to serve the community and we still need to take care of our people.” While his congregation has sadly lost church members due to the coronavirus, Dr. Gray sees a positive from the challenges they have endured, “I believe people will value human connection even more.”

A SUDDEN CHANGE OF PLANS | ELYSE SIMS ‘03 Can you imagine landing your dream job of working internationally and preparing to move to Denmark, when suddenly a pandemic causes borders to close, airports to cancel flights and restrictions to be placed on public services and gatherings? Alumna Elyse Sims ’03 was faced with this reality after accepting a position as the marketing and communications lead with Abzu, an IT services firm headquartered in Copenhagen.

Elyse earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia in international business, specializing in legal studies with a minor in Japanese. She explained, “I thought I would end up in Asia! I have always loved traveling and worked in companies with an international presence. Projects that cross borders and languages are always complex: they require you to think creatively, explore many more implications, work at odd hours, and introduce you to different cultures and personalities. It’s not for everyone, but I

seem to have a knack (and the patience) for it!” While working in the Copenhagen office, Elyse experienced Danish life. She loved the cuisine, “The food is amazing. Danes eat a lot of pork and the sauces and gravies are magnificent! Danes are also one of the highest coffee consumers per capita, so the coffee is excellent and freshly baked bread is available in shops on every corner.” She also noted, “Copenhagen is the bicycle capital of the world! Everyone has a bike and most people have several!” Elyse was traveling between Copenhagen and Barcelona just before the coronavirus outbreak caused nations around the globe to lock down. She had just secured her apartment in the district of Østerbro and returned to the U.S. to finalize her affairs and to get her two cats ready to move abroad. Getting back to Denmark once the travel restrictions are eased will be challenging as flights are scarce and expensive. Elyse is fortunate to have both a work and resident visa. While staying stateside, Elyse has been working on Central European Time. She commented, “I am up at 2:30 a.m. and my first meetings start at 3:30 a.m. But the good news is that I finish my workday shortly after noon, which gives me plenty of time to run, cycle, and kayak in the Florida sun! Although I am in bed at 6:30 p.m., at least I’m not missing out on many social activities!” When Elyse returns to the Copenhagen office, she will roll out the “big launch” for a new product (an artificial intelligence framework), since the original launch date of April 21 was scaled back due to the pandemic. Like all of us, she looks forward to getting back to her pre-pandemic life, working abroad and enjoying the Danish lifestyle.

By Brian Cole | Associate Head of School, Fine Arts The Fine Arts department at George Walton is staffed with some of the most talented and creative people with whom I have ever had the pleasure to work. They were able to gracefully maneuver everything that was thrown at them at the end of the last school year. Without missing a beat, they continued to provide meaningful instruction and not only survived but thrived during a very difficult and challenging time. It is easy to overlook all of the innovation and accomplishments that transpired prior to our move to digital learning

so I’d like to highlight some of the accomplishments of last year and look forward to a few exciting plans for the upcoming year. VISUAL ARTS Lower school students didn’t miss a beat during Digital Days thanks to the creativity of their imaginative teacher. Packets of art supplies were mailed to every student – and then the learning (and the fun!) continued. “I knew that I wouldn’t be able to connect with my students if I simply recorded the lessons,” said lower school art teacher Chelsea Carver, “so I began creating countless video tutorials, casting myself as different artists and personalities in front of a greenscreen, filling in the backgrounds and composing the background musical scores.” Chelsea was able to introduce the students to a wide range of artists and

FINE ARTS art concepts in a way that was not only educational, but entertaining. The students continued to cover topics ranging from the ocean bottom to the ecosystems of the rainforest. And they traveled from the Renaissance to contemporary artists to explore the wide range of different artforms. These are just a few examples of the many creative lessons that engaged students. “Since there is fluidity with visual arts, we have the opportunity customize learning and to help students grow to their own potential,” said Chelsea. “GWA is blessed to have the ability to equip students with materials needed to help enhance their learning in the classroom or digitally. I feel confident that no matter what the fall looks like, lower school art students will come away with stronger abilities, more knowledge, and self-assurance of their own growth.” The middle school visual arts program encourages disciplined creativity by using higher level critical thinking skills to identify problems,

explore original solutions, and complete the problem-solving process. “The purpose of the visual arts curriculum is to encourage students to think independently and to instill in them an appreciation for the arts,” explained teacher Megan Sims. “Art allows students to realize there can be more than one solution to a problem, while promoting nonlinear thinking. Students have opportunities to create art using a variety of mediums and techniques while focused on drawing, painting and sculpture. In addition to creating, students also learn to discuss artwork through class critiques. We discuss the practice of constructive criticism, offering feedback that is helpful, not hurtful, to help improve their work.” This

school year, students will cover traditional art techniques including drawing, painting and sculpture and digital art projects will be incorporated with simple animation techniques, graphic design, and photography. Students will have individual art kits to minimize the sharing of supplies, (and germs). The kits could also be taken home in the event the school returns to distance learning at any point. “Art can help children connect their feelings of self to the community and the world around them, but also can help differentiate them and give them a sense of individuality. This has practical application not only in the visual arts, but also in all areas of curriculum and for lifelong learning.”

This passion for the value of arts education also extends to the upper school art program. Steve Reagan teaches upper school visual arts. “If you visit my classroom, you will notice, that at any one time, we have a ‘classroom factory’ with students working in various media, be it drawing, painting, throwing pots, or woodworking. I work with them to formulate their ideas into ways of creating something that they will enjoy and will be meaningful to them. My teaching philosophy is that everyone has ideas to share and something to learn from each other. Honestly, that has been one of the greatest realizations for me as a teacher. Not only am I teaching, but the students are teaching me as well. I hope that

SUSTAINABLE LIVING Art, math, science and the humanities are all combined in GWA’s Sustainable Living program. Throughout the course, students work on individual lessons focused on the local environment and sustainable living. Whenever possible, local resources and local examples are used to teach key concepts to help students develop a sense of place. The new outdoor classroom provides an inviting space for all ages to engage in learning experiences in a natural environment. Construction of a beehive and study of the bee colony helps students gain knowledge of the environment and ecosystems. Gardens provide a living lab experience as students grow, cook and enjoy fresh, nutritious foods.

when my students leave my classes they are motivated to continue learning and realize that education is lifelong.” Several upper school visual arts students won awards this past year: Marnie Couch captured second place in the Hice Congressional Art Contest. She was also selected for the Governor’s Honors Art Summer Program. For the Dermatology Associates of Georgia Annual Art Contest, Ella Rowan won second place, Mikee Bolle was awarded third place, and Marnie Couch won Honorable Mention. “As a teacher, I truly missed being in the classroom these last few months and the camaraderie that an art classroom welcomes,” said Steve. “For this school year, I am excited that we will partner with St. Paul’s in Barcelona as part of our global classroom initiative. I look forward to linking our schools in the study of art. I have learned that students are resilient and adaptive and that digital education can provide the opportunity for students to continue learning while absent from the traditional classroom setting, and that is key to consistency and continuity.  I have also discovered that it is important as adults to remain encouraged about the abilities of our young people to understand

and tackle major issues. I believe that our recent experience has only enhanced our determination to help young people understand the importance of not only learning how to create art, but also to appreciate the aesthetic and intrinsic value of art in our culture.” PHOTOGRAPHY Our hands-on photography elective classes start with the basics as students learn to use their cameras to make dynamic compositions. They are introduced to the art of photography through a variety of projects that explore nature and the world around them, sense of self, light and shadows and other concepts that help them hone their skills behind a camera. They also become skilled at PhotoShop as they learn about post-production editing and digital manipulation. After mastering the intro classes, students have the option to explore their own master projects through Continued Investigation of Photography. They use a variety of techniques as they narrow down the direction of their portfolios to be submitted for judging.

YEARBOOK an internship (and a huge group project) as students learn the importance of true collaboration in a real-world scenario. They meet important production deadlines, learn how to work with different personalities, and develop many skills: writing journalistic stories and captions, editing, composition, photography, visual and spatial design awareness, marketing, and much more.

“Having a chance to use my graphic design and photography skills for the good of the school as a part of the advancement team is a full time job in and of itself, but my true passion is working with some of the most brilliant and creative students at the school as we create a yearbook,” said yearbook advisor Liz Jones. “Yearbook is no class. I mean, it is a class, but it is also a working, breathing business that the students oversee.” Yearbook is similar to

The 2019 book received a gold medalist critique from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the George Walton Academy yearbook is often featured in the Herff Jones curriculum and internal materials for its excellence in journalism, photography and design. “We expect the 2020 book to win even more awards this year,” said Liz.   COVID-19 presented great challenges for the yearbook staff. “We had submitted our final deadline work before we were out

of school, but we still had a great deal of missing information to fix and fill in during the proofing process.” Editor-in-Chief Jenna Lo and Liz worked closely together (online) to delegate work to the rest of the staff and put in many long nights, weekends and spring break to complete pages of the book and to even create a brand new layout on the COVID-19 pandemic. Then there was a wait for the publishing plant to reopen and work began on the digital yearbook presentation. “Providing the presentation online made it more accessible and it ended up being a very moving way to bring everyone together in a time when we all felt torn apart,” said Liz. “Despite the less than ideal situation, the lessons the students learned in teamwork, perseverance, time management and humility will stay with them far beyond George Walton Academy. I really feel like this extraordinary class of 2020 will be the group that changes the world.”

The dance program is planning more outstanding live performances as well as online shows for the upcoming year. “We are also excited to announce the inception of GWA’s first competitive dance team! This company of dancers will represent GWA at local and regional competitions in addition to performing and initiating outreach programs in the community. They will also be featured in original music videos and various online multi-media projects. We can’t wait

to showcase this amazing group of dancers and continue to entertain the GWA community!” MUSIC Lower school music is a vibrant program where students from Pre-K3 through fifth grade are immersed in engaging and exciting music education. This past year, students performed “How I Became A Pirate,” “Jingle Bell Juke Box,” and “Under The Big Top,” all created personally by program director Debbie Dyer. “I find it easier to design my own productions, incorporating published music, because I can better adapt it to our students,” she explained.

“COVID-19 did not stop students from learning and experiencing music. Through the use of puppets, props and various types of technology, students continued to move, dance, play music and create music. They learned musical terms and symbols, wrote new lyrics, reviewed the musical staff, explored various genres of music, created new tunes through Songmaker in Chrome Lab, and went on listening walks. During Digital Days, students were introduced to the autoharp, a virtual xylophone and virtual handbells, learned how to play spoons (as instruments), and tinikling (a Philippine dance that uses bamboo sticks). Fifth graders even participated in a music Quiz Show online game created by Mrs. Dyer and winners received cash prizes! In preparation for the return to school, Debbie participated in many online workshops and webinars and attended “Odyssey 2020” an online music education conference, with over 25 hours of instruction from a myriad of world-renowned elementary music educators and instructors. She also purchased a soprano ukulele and began learning to play it over the summer. “Realizing that flexibility and creativity will be necessary during the upcoming school year, all GWA Arts Department teachers are prepping to use every available tool in our educational arsenal to keep our students engaged in the learning process,” added Debbie. In third grade, students are introduced to the flutophone which is a beginning wind instrument. Fourth graders expand the skills they learned in third grade by transitioning to the recorder, which is a more challenging wind instrument. “This year, I’m excited to introduce Bucket Drumming to fourth and fifth graders! Pre-K3 through second grade students will explore rhythm instruments, boom whackers, hand bells, kazoos, glockenspiels, xylophones and other instruments using instrument kits provided by the school. They will continue to

move, dance, create, perform, respond, and connect to the various genres of music from our country and from countries around the world.” Over the course of more than two decades, lower school music students have been immersed in learning music and have presented over 200 musical performances. “It’s truly a great joy to be able to instill the love of music in young children. Music is one of the few things we can continue to participate in throughout our entire lives and even into eternity,” said Debbie. THEATER AND CHORUS The GWA fine arts program took a major step forward this year with the addition of Paula Gerhardt to the team. Paula is a theatre professional and has been performing for almost 20 years. Her enthusiasm and passion for the arts is laying the foundation for a stronger fine arts program. “2019 was an amazing year for the GWA Drama Dawgs,” said Paula. “Our upper school theater students performed The Complete Works of Williams Shakespeare Abridged at the GHSA One Act Competition and were awarded several individual awards and ranked fourth overall. Middle school drama students presented A Christmas Extravaganza, where they were able to experience all aspects of a production, including acting, costuming, props and set construction.” During Digital Days, when students were distance learning, they were trained in Oral Interpretation which is

the performance of literature aloud to an audience when the performer acts out all characters and narration by themselves. This unique art form allows the students to continue developing characters and staging scenes while being able to safely practice social distancing. “This also allows students to continue working on their performance independently if we have to resume distance learning. When students enter Upper School, they will be able to participate in Oral Interpretation section of the GHSA Literary Competition.” Middle and upper school chorus is a developing program. In 2019, the vocalists performed at the Veteran’s Day program, Gingerbread Christmas and at Great Oaks Senior facility before a halt to their performances due to COVID-19. “I hope to grow our chorus numbers and reimagine what students might learn in chorus during COVID-19, since singing is not encouraged during this time,” said Paula. “Once we get COVID behind us, our goal is to grow our choral program and begin looking at singing at venues in New York City, entering competitions, and collaborating within our other arts programs.”

PIANO “To know our plans for the future of our program, I love to look back on the progress we’ve already made,” said piano program director Corrie Beth Noll. “When I began teaching piano, I had around thirty private piano students. Quickly, I realized the need for more opportunities for our students to study piano and proposed creating a piano lab where we could offer group piano classes to all our students. Within a short time, we were able to open our piano lab, and this past school year our program grew to include 108 students from first to twelfth grades.”

During Digital Days, focus shifted from creating music on the piano, to creating music electronically and digitally. “The most exciting project the students engaged in was creating original electronic pieces using notation software,” said Corrie Beth. “These pieces were meant to represent the students’ reflections and interpretations of the pandemic situation. Not only did it give them the chance to utilize software they most likely would not have used before, it provided another outlet to express their thoughts and feelings in a unique way.” Lower school classes utilized the Seesaw platform to continue group classes and students

GUITAR - NEW FOR 2020 Brian Stephens will lead GWA’s new guitar lab. The program will debut with a class offered to middle and upper school students and more details will be announced in the new school year. Brian is an accomplished musician and plays in a band with his wife Maggie. They perform throughout Georgia and have entertained at GWA events for the past two years. They are also GWA parents. Seen here with his banjo, Brian looks forward to adding even more choices to the already rich fine arts program at GWA.

Seesaw will be used in the future to help encourage students to practice more at home. “I’m looking forward to what the future holds for our piano lab. We hope to offer composition classes, AP Music Theory, more levels of piano class, and music production and recording classes.”

BAND The 2019-2020 school year was full of excitement and achievement for the GWA Band students. “The year opened with our Latin Jazz inspired marching band show, La Danza de Los Toros, which was well received by audiences and judges alike!” said Director of Bands Christian Smith. “Notable recognitions from the season include: Jolie Lanier winning first place drum major at every event the GWA Marching Bulldog Band competed in, winning our class at Jacksonville State, Senior Brody Lindsey winning the Conn-Selmer soloist award sponsored by Georgia State University, placing second in our class at GSU, and at our final competition winning our class, first place in visual, first place in brass, and second place overall out of 20 bands! (All awards and placements can be found on the GWA website, under the marching band tab.) Additionally, our Jr. Bulldog band got a taste of what marching band is like, spending a Friday night in the stands, and performing excellently in the Christmas Parade! We are so excited to welcome such a fantastic group of kids into the marching band for the upcoming season!” In the concert program, GWA students continued to flourish. Eleven students from the Middle School, and 11 from the Upper School were selected to participate

in UGA’s honor festivals, Midfest and Janfest, with multiple students placing first chair in their respective bands. Five excellent middle school members auditioned and made the 2019 District band, and several auditioned forward to make the Georgia Allstate Band, (the highest honor.) They include Blakeney Sewell on Horn, Nicole Volk on Clarinet, and Michael Mealor as first Alternate on Tuba. GWA sent a record breaking 20 upper school students to District Band this year, and the following students made the High School Allstate Band: Brody Lindsey on Horn, Brookes Dokes on Trombone, Alex Carrillo on Clarinet, Gracie Wood on Clarinet, Eli Scornik on Euphonium, and Luke Lewis as a first Trombone Alternate. Also of note, GWA had several students in auditioned honor ensembles that met weekly amongst the Metro Atlanta Area. Brody Lindsey in the EYSO, Bailey Croker, Eli Scornik and Alex Carillo for AWYS, and Alex Carrillo in the AYSO. “Claire Volk was accepted into the Governors Honors Program on French Horn, the first band student from GWA to win a spot in GHP! And Alex Carrillo was accepted into the most prestigious summer music festival hosted by Boston University, the Tanglewood Music Festival,” added Christian. In February of 2020, GWA hosted Master Educator and retired band

director David Vandewalker, along with esteemed clinicians of every instrument type to further students’ musical knowledge and to help them prepare for their spring music festivals. “We were able to perform many of these pieces in our first ever Virtual Bands! (videos can be found on GWA social media.) Our students stepped up to the challenge every day during online learning. We spent our days learning more music theory, sight reading, digging into the fundamentals, and recording and editing on musical software. Our students were eager to find new exciting ways to make music,” said Christian. “As for the fall of 2020? The band is more excited than ever to get into it, and put together an excellent, competitive product for all to enjoy! With 65 members in the marching band, it’s sure to be a fantastic year! We are thrilled to have 10 excellent members in the GWA Guard, and to field a drumline for the first time in three seasons. We have a strong student leadership team to help lead the way. Our goal as an organization is to push our students to be the best they can be, overcome adversity, and grow into fantastic young adults. We have no doubt they will continue to thrive this upcoming school year and can’t wait to show our GWA community what we have in store. Look for the 2020 show announcement soon!” FINE ARTS

At GWA, athletics are about more than wins and losses. Of course, we celebrate victories, but we also appreciate the importance of all that is learned along the way to prepare for a game, match or meet. Coaches equip players for competition, but they also prepare them for life as they help build character and teach skills that will serve an athlete long after the whistle is blown or the buzzer sounds at the end of the game: teamwork, discipline, perseverance, leadership, sportsmanship, and commitment. This past year, more than ever, we learned how essential these skills are as we all faced challenges like never before. We are proud of how our students and coaches dug deep to draw on those skills to persevere through a difficult time of uncertainty. I have no doubt that they will emerge stronger and even more committed as we look ahead to the future. We will build upon the success of this past year to take GWA athletics to the next level!

GWA IS A MEMBER OF THE GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATION.

Football had a good season, all in all, but fell short this year in round one of the playoffs losing a very close contest to North Cobb Christian.

FALL

FALL SEASON The 2019 -20 athletic year was an unusual one to say the least - if your focus is on the way it ended. However, GWA started off with a BANG. Here are some highlights from the fall.

FALL

Once again, volleyball was strong and made it to the state playoffs, losing in the first round to the eventual State Champion.  Cheerleading had a challenging season due to several injuries but managed to finish in the top six in the state competition again this year.

Cross Country had a very young team this year and we are expecting some of the middle school graduates, (including last year’s State Champ and this year’s Runner-up) to add depth in the coming year. Lastly, the softball team went to Columbus for the third straight year but this time they came away with a little hardware for the trophy case. They finished third in the State and are expecting similar, if not better results, this coming fall.

WINTER

WINTER SEASON Although the boys and girls basketball teams missed the playoffs for the first time in quite some time, there were some bright stars including the girls middle school team that won the championship and of course our very own Lori Hines went over 300 victories as a coach, with more than 200 of those here at GWA! The equestrian team continued to bring home ribbons and medals throughout their season. Both middle and upper school teams qualified for region 1 finals and the upper school team was a region 1 reserve champion. Josie Evans,

Sarah Blackstone, and Hailey Wudtke qualified for zone 4 finals. The wrestling team was so close to making the trip to Macon this year for the Dual Championships. They fared well at the State Individual Match sending three to the podiums with two State Champs, Patrick Morris and Chris Sperin, while Michael Dagenhart placed fifth. Overall as a team, GWA tied for sixth. As for swimming, our young, growing team had an individual State Champion, Charlie Stout, who placed first in the Breaststroke and also finished third in the 50 Free.

SPRING SEASON Spring season started out with a smash. Athletes and coaches alike worked diligently to prepare for the season. The practices were gaining ground, and games, matches and meets were attended by outstanding numbers to cheer on these hardworking athletes and coaches. Tennis was on a winning streak. Track had personal best records broken at each meet. Lacrosse’s first spring season was gaining more traction. Girls soccer had big wins over rivals Athens Christian and Westminster. Unforeseen circumstances put a wrench in the wheel and the spring season came to a sudden end. Coaches have all been put to the test and have worked to be creative in finding unique ways to honor the senior athletes. Thank you to all of the students who have handled this challenging abrupt end to their seasons with perseverance and grace. GWA looks forward to the days when we can return to the fields, courts, gyms and tracks. Go Bulldogs!

GWA’s popular youth athletic program continues to see record growth and success. Our youth football teams had terrific seasons. The 5/6 grade team, coached by Jason Inman, finished second in its division. We maintained three flag teams and two tackle football teams. The youth cheer squads were coached by Michele Bowen and Ashley Johnston. The program continues to grow under their leadership with 25 cheerleaders on

the K5-2nd grade squad and 15 on the 3rd-4th grade squad. We had more youth basketball teams than ever before with nine teams and more than 60 players. Enthusiasm for the program continues to grow with 11 coaches volunteering to lead these student athletes. The parent involvement was remarkable. Youth wrestling was led by Marc Simon and several of these talented athletes placed at various tournaments. The season opened with a tournament at Social Circle High School. Rocky Halloway took second place at 84 pounds and Tim Mathis captured third at 75 pounds. GWA had five athletes place at the Mill Creek tournament.

In its second year, youth lacrosse continues to grow and become more competitive. We have 70 athletes total in the youth lacrosse program. Under the leadership of Scott Jackson, the future is exciting for this popular program! Nearly 40 athletes participated in youth track this spring. They were led by Coach Laura Henry who has previously coached youth track in Tennessee. We look forward to watching this program develop even further in 2021!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GWA!

Most birthdays are celebrated only once during the year, but the 2019-2020 year was a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary for GWA. Commemorations began on the first day of school as surviving GWA Founding Trustees Dick Hester, Roy Roberts, Sr. and John Sorrells raised the flag. Students arriving on campus were greeted with music from the 60’s, along with cheerleaders, our Awgie mascot and smiling faculty and staff.

COMING HOME The sound of laughter filed the air as more than 100 alumni gathered at the Wayfarer to catch up and reminisce at Alumni Weekend which provided another occasion to celebrate GWA’s 50th anniversary. “It has been 35 years since we graduated,” said class of 1984 graduate Sharon Mann Gordon. “I can’t get over how much the school campus has changed, and I am glad that the school is doing so well. When I look back, I am thankful for my time as a student. Being part of GWA has led to great experiences, opportunities and friendships for me.”

Alumni Weekend kicked off with a tailgate on Friday night where former teachers and alumni had a chance to visit and catch up with one another. Guests were treated to the Varsity food truck, music, corn hole games and opportunities to tour the campus. The athletic department added extra bling to the field by painting the 50-yard line and the logo in gold and the outside lines in red, black, and white.

PRESERVING GWA’S HISTORY

During the 2019-2020 year, the Advancement Department undertook the task of collecting and curating GWA artifacts, photos, news articles, programs, and other miscellaneous items for historical preservation. Displays were set up on campus for homecoming week and items were loaned to the Monroe Museum downtown.

A special thank you to Philip Peters for donating photos of the first varsity football and boys basketball teams, along with first year letters that were awarded to athletes for their jackets. These have been matted and framed and are now proudly displayed in the athletic offices.

50TH ANNIVERSARY GOLDEN GALA SETS RECORD Guests mingled, bid on silent and live auction items, and danced the night away at the 50th Anniversary Golden Gala. Thanks to the support of GWA Corporate Partners, additional sponsors, grade projects and donors, it was a recordbreaking year as the gala raised more money than ever before.

George Walton Academy would like to thank the following people who have donated or loaned items over the years to this project: Philip Peters Pam Peters Stan Dial

2020 HINDSIGHT As GWA looks ahead to the next 50 years and beyond, students, faculty and staff were encouraged to donate items for a collective time capsule to be opened fifty years from now. Just as those who came before us have done, today’s GWA community will leave something behind for future George Walton students and families to see to be able to experience what school (and life) was like in 2020.

Former faculty and staff, along with alumni, alumni parents, and current families joined in the festivities. Community is the heart of George Walton Academy and Dawgs 360 is a powerful example of that community in action.

The organization supports the students, teachers and families of GWA in countless ways throughout the year. You will find members volunteering their time, donating materials, attending all types of events, serving as room parents and answering the call to help throughout the year. Roughly 1,500 parents, students, faculty, grandparents and even aunts and uncles make up the membership. Studies show that when parents take an active role in their children’s school community – everyone benefits, including students, teachers and parents. Parent/ family involvement leads to greater academic success, improved communication among educators, parents and administrators and

INSPIRED TO TAKE ACTION | April Farlow ‘98 experienced foster care or homelessness. Lydia’s Place supports young people who have overcome great obstacles to get to this next phase in their life but could be one step away from food or housing insecurity.

Speaking at the Celebration of Excellence event a decade ago proved to be a life-changing turning point for motivational speaker and GWA alumna April (Whirley) Farlow ’98. The annual event recognizes the achievements of young people in the state, who despite obstacles and adversity, are graduating from high school, vocational school, or college. Approximately 400 high school seniors age out of foster care each year and many more are homeless. These students may begin secondary education without a safety net. They lack the support of family, basic necessities - or they have a housing situation that is tenuous. After speaking at the event, April was inspired to found and serve as board president of Lydia’s Place, a faith-based organization that serves young adults 14-26 who have

The group’s community volunteers assemble Provisions of Hope baskets to provide students with essentials, including toiletries, bedding, school supplies and grocery store gift cards. In partnership with Athens area colleges, Lydia’s Place provides options for emergency student housing by covering the cost of on campus dorms, giving students in a need a place to live for two weeks while looking for a more permanent solution. Recently, the organization joined with the Athens Area Habitat for Humanity to provide housing for needful students in the Athens area. The resulting project, Lydia’s Homeplace, will open its doors this fall and give up to 12 young people the safety and security of having a place to call home while they transition to living on their own. By following her heartfelt desire to help a vulnerable population of young adults, April’s organization has served over 1000 students on over 15 Georgia college campuses since 2017. She has witnessed God’s hand along each step of the journey and her good works are changing the trajectory of the lives she has touched.

Go Beyond

George Walton Academy Exceeds $3 Million Campaign Goal, Raises $4 Million

80 go | BEYOND

The Go Beyond campaign was launched in 2019 to fund new projects for athletics and performing arts. The campaign’s original goal of $3 million was exceeded with $4,036,100 in gifts and pledges of support raised to date. The campaign concluded at the 50th Anniversary Golden Gala when final gifts and pledges came in pushing the school over its goal.

than GWA has ever raised in its 50-year history. The goal of this campaign is to improve the learning environment for every GWA student—inside and outside the classroom. “Go Beyond” was also designed to make GWA as welcoming as possible for visitors when they come to sporting events, student activities, and performances.”

James Hammond, co-chair of the campaign’s steering committee, expressed his excitement. “This is more

Students will have a new basketball court and dedicated spaces for wrestling and competitive cheer. The campaign will also fund extensive renovations to the current middle school gym and band hall, transforming these spaces into a state-of-the-art facility for GWA’s nationally renowned marching band.  Students will also have space to practice piano, choir, guitar and dance. The first target on the list of projects is the lower field, including new restrooms and concessions building, new tennis courts, and lights for the track.

and provide the valuable social and life skills that help our students excel.”

“We’ve invested millions of dollars over the last two years strengthening our academic programs and improving every single learning space on campus,” stated Dr. Dan Dolan, GWA’s head of school. “But a world-class education isn’t limited to the classroom.  It’s also about the experiences that students enjoy from being part of a team or expressing themselves creatively.  This campaign will allow us to go beyond the classroom

“When we started back in August, we had a working goal of $3 million and it felt like a huge number,” said Marianne Akin, campaign co-chair. “We were confident we could get to $3 million but never imagined breaking the $4 million mark.  To watch parents and grandparents, faculty and staff, and alumni respond to our call for support has been both humbling and rewarding.”

Led by a committee of volunteers, the campaign was cochaired by GWA parents Aubrey and Marianne Akin and James and Kellee Hammond. Other committee members include Wes Bond, Justin and Mikelle Brady, Kelly Jesel, Heather Knapp, Meredith Malcom, Nathan Purvis, Roy Roberts, Jr., Loy Turner, and Lee and Kelly Waldo.

GWA

| annual report

Every GWA graduating class leaves its mark...a lasting impression or legacy. It’s what we as administrators, teachers, and a school community remember about the seniors of that particular year. This past year was like no other. And the same can be said of those seniors. The Class of 2020 is like no other that has graduated from George Walton Academy. How these outstanding young men and women faced the adversity, disappointments and challenges of the last few months of their senior year has been nothing less than inspiring. Those seniors transformed from students into teachers…as they taught us all lessons in grace, tenacity, compassion and perseverance. Of course, their GWA journey was about more than just the last few months of the school year. We hope the memories and relationships they created will endure long after they go beyond the halls of George Walton Academy.

We opened this issue of The Bulldog with a focus on the Class of 2020 because the achievements, accomplishments and attitudes of our graduates tell the GWA story. They demonstrate how we provide challenging instruction, engaging experiences, and global perspectives designed to inspire lives of intellectual curiosity, integrity and purpose. Throughout every student’s GWA journey, from Pre-K3 to senior year, we are committed to delivering on that mission so that every student can maximize their potential and GO BEYOND what they ever thought possible.

Dr. Dan Dolan Head of School

Thank you. Thank you for all you’ve given to George Walton Academy. Our school and community are stronger thanks to each of you.
