Perusing this annual accounting of all that is George Walton Academy, I am in awe of how a small school can do so much and again reminded of the abundance of people, across generations, who are devoted to and dearly love GWA. The teachers quoted in this magazine understand what defines us: family, home, love of each child, and tradition.

We will build upon the shoulders of past leaders – teachers, coaches, volunteers, and students - to move forward. Together.

Dr. Craig Barnes, recently retired President of Princeton Theological Seminary, often preaches on the importance of a collective faith, one that transcends the individual and gains force over time and through history. Such an enduring faith draws strength from many voices and prayers. There is great power in such a community of faith.

Along with so many supporters and believers who have come before, I have faith in the future of George Walton Academy. Enjoy these stories and pictures that speak to our school today, and tomorrow.

groundbreaking EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES For a school that has been around for over 53 years now, George Walton Academy has seen its fair share of growth and development.

Starting with solid foundations on “the hill” and building character along the way, our students are given the tools they need to become successful. From the school to its students, teachers and community as a whole, we are all a work in progress and we are building as we grow.

George Walton Academy continues to meet and exceed the needs of our students as we continue building the future. The new gym construction, renovations in the Nicholson Center concession stand and updates to technology and spaces around the school are just small steps in our plan to continue growing and innovating at GWA. Enrollment growth is strong. The addition of a new K3 class has involved some shuffling, but we are ready to welcome our newest little bulldogs into the GWA family.

George Walton Academy provides challenging instruction, engaging experiences, and global perspectives designed to inspire lives of intellectual curiosity, integrity, and purpose.

Opportunities are everywhere at George Walton Academy. Our academic programs continuously challenge students as they learn to think critically and stand out as lifelong leaders and learners. Winter term serves as a vehicle to introduce our upper school students to innovative classes that they may never be exposed to during the school year, to try out internships that may influence future career choices, or even to travel out of the country to learn about global perspectives. Fine arts encourage creative exploration that starts in lower school with art, music, chorus, piano, dance and band and continues throughout a student’s time at GWA as opportunities expand to theater, sculpture, fashion design and stage design.

Upper school business and marketing classes teach students to run their own coffee shop business, Java Dawgs. Video production, yearbook staff and graphic design classes introduce marketable technological and artistic skills that will benefit our future leaders. Even in physical education, there are a variety of choices in classes - athletic performance, lifetime wellness, life sports or dance for fitness each class benefits different students at different levels of fitness.

And athletic team participation is offered as early as kindergarten for our boys and girls. Many of our team sports dominated their competition this year in GIAA, including multiple state titles. Abundant athletic opportunities encourage teamwork, competitiveness and physical development.

Field trips and travel opportunities are prevalent in all three divisions; students are always encouraged to get out and learn from the world around them.

GWA welcomes guest speakers and projects that encourage interdisciplinary learning not only across subjects, but across divisions and ages. You never know when a third grader might visit and teach a high school fly-fishing winter term class or when the ASL classes come in to teach fifth graders how to draw hands to spell out words in sign language for an art project. Third-grade market day successfully invited school wide participation as the students sold their goods and services to learn about business and the economy.

goals and rise to their full potential.

The college counseling office starts meeting with students as soon as freshman year to make sure students are taking the classes they need.

They also take a week out of their summer to take students on a college tour that allows them to see many different types of schools that they might be interested in attending.

THESE LITTLE BULLDOGS WENT TO MARKET As a culminating activity, the third grade hosted the First Annual Market Day this spring and it was a HUGE success! The event served as a practical application for all the skills and concepts the students learned in their unit on economics. Students set up a “store” and each “store” provided a good or service for his/her classmates, other GWA students, and staff members to purchase using special “dawg dollars.” From jewelry to candles, cupcakes, shoe cleaning, plants, and more, there was a fantastic array of products and services that our young entrepreneurs offered to market shoppers. Mrs. Padgett said, “We are incredibly proud of the work done by our third graders.” They have gained valuable real-world knowledge and a first-hand look at business operations.

Dedicated teachers work to make sure every student continues to be successful as they progress through GWA. The PARC is there for student support for students of all ages who need extra help outside of the classroom. They keep track of which students might have special accommodations within the classroom and in testing situations.

Middle school robotics teacher Mark Gasaway loves what he does at George Walton Academy because, “we get to create and learn. We have the freedom to explore ideas and try to build and program those dreams. Sometimes they work and other times not so much, but we are allowed to try and try again.”

I am excited to see what this new year brings in challenges and the solutions our students create to meet those challenges.”

As we build new spaces to accommodate our growing community on campus, we continue to build the opportunities that are offered to our students and families.

From the solid foundations started in lower school, to the finishing touches that our seniors put on their college applications as they make their way into the world, George Walton Academy gives students tools to be successful in achieving their goals and the community works together to build a future that we are proud to be a part of.

Some of our strengths aren’t measured in success stats and infographics. People know GWA for the accomplishments of our students, but it is often an open house or a tour or shadow day that actually makes people realize what a special place we have here. Smiling faces, students that speak politely to adults, hold doors for others, and treat each other with kindness and respect those are the things that show what we’re building here. Yes, they are successful students prepared for college. But more notably, they are good human beings that know right from wrong. No school is perfect.

We are a work in progress, but we continue to work on making George Walton Academy better every day.

Meet GWA’s New

Head of School

A Q&A WITH MR. MARSHALL What attracted you to the opportunity to lead George Walton Academy?

How has your experience prepared you for the Head of School role at GWA?

The school’s history, the nice people I met, the school’s mission, and the opportunity to return to my roots in North Georgia all drew me. My four children reside in Atlanta. I started teaching and coaching in Rome, GA and candidly, it would be wonderful for my final chapter to be in Monroe.

Since 1983, I have worked at different schools in the Southeast and Midwest. The oldest was founded before the Civil War and the youngest only in 2000. I have worked at secular and Christian schools, boarding and day schools, and schools with large endowments and some deeply in debt. My most recent school (a public charter) had 2,100 students, while one had under 100 students. This diversity was enlightening, and yet I discovered there are common features of every great school: outstanding teachers, a relentless focus on mission and putting the individual student front and center, pervasive parental involvement, and abundant extracurricular offerings.

There is also really important work to be done.

We can build on more than a half century of success as the premiere independent school in Walton County. This part of Georgia is growing exponentially and I am motivated and excited for our school to flourish too.

Why did you choose a career in education?

I am a teacher at heart. Education is in my family’s DNA. My father — the first in his large farming family to graduate from college in the 1940s — earned a Ph.D. He became a high school science teacher, education professor, and ultimately a university president.

Like him, my four siblings and I enjoy learning. We all have graduate degrees and continue to learn new things, formally and in everyday life. Even as an adult, the more I learn and grow, the more I understand my limited perspective and how much more I can learn!

Working with children appeals to me: teaching, coaching and informal counseling. I love the cycle of the academic year: lots of breaks, and a chance to take a breath, learn from the past and start anew each August. I have been in independent schools for more than thirty years, at private and public schools, mostly in Georgia. The best public schools strive to be similar to an independent school: mission-driven, high academic standards, outstanding teachers who focus on every child, strong extracurriculars, and a recognition that standardized testing has pros and cons.

Public education is re-embracing small schools and small classes. Our country needs to reinvest heavily in that simple model of K-12 education.

How would you describe your philosophy of education?

Schools should serve the whole child, academically, extracurricularly, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. More than ever, educators are viewed as miracle

workers and are expected to do it all!

Schools with JudeoChristian values such as GWA recognize that young people have different types of God-given gifts. Our job as educators is to help each student discover and develop these unique gifts and passions. Dr. Howard Gardner’s well-known concept of Multiple Intelligences is spot on.

There are many forms of intelligence and talent. GWA teachers understand this.

The FIVE C’s is another helpful frame.

Strong schools such as GWA foster critical thinking skills, communication (both oral and in writing), collaboration (i.e. working as part of a team), creativity and character development. Importantly, who we are as people is as important as how much we know. GWA has long

prepared young people to pursue lives of integrity and purpose. This is a high calling.

Tell us about your leadership style.

This is an interesting topic. I am a different leader today than thirty years ago. Moreover, the priorities of a head in his first year at a school are different than later in his tenure, once he understands the community. In addition, the evolution of a school calls for different leadership skills over time. Gary Hobbs was the right leader for past two years, helping to shepherd and heal our community. My sense is that this healing and bringing everyone together remain a priority. We must continue to do this in order to get everyone behind any new initiative. We will embark on school-wide strategic planning in the years ahead, and we will get started!

Most importantly, this school year I will take the time to get to know the community, its people and school traditions. My leadership team, which includes some new faces, will also reaffirm the mission as well as the basic rules and policies that govern daily life at GWA. We would love to hear about your family and some of your interests/ passions/hobbies.

I spend a great deal of time with my four children (Luke, Kate, Will and Matthew), often playing sports or just being

outdoors. We hike, rock climb, cycle and ski, and enjoy pickleball, spikeball and tennis. Our large extended family is located all over the country, so we like to travel, usually to the mountains or the coast.

In college I played keyboards in a jazz band. I studied in New York City and enjoy the theater, live music, historic churches, and all the cultural offerings of that amazing city.

The Seminoles and the Braves are often on the TV at my home. Enough said!

My faith is an essential part of my life. My family attends North Point Community Church. As one of my teammates shared recently, it is great to be able to be unapologetically Christian at a school that is not a Christian School, but lovingly welcomes and accepts everyone.

That sentence is a mouthful, but I believe it captures the founders’ vision for George Walton Academy. That sentence is grounded in unconditional love, grace and humility.

Any closing thoughts?

I look forward to meeting lots of wonderful people this year. Our school’s future is bright!

summer construction projects The summer is a time to refresh and recharge for most of the community, but the campus was bustling with activity all summer long as crews worked diligently to get the school ready for fall semester. Here are a few of the changes we made this summer:

• New Gym - the biggest addition to campus is the new gym. Built next to the Nicholson Center, the gym will allow for additional practice space for basketball, volleyball, cheer, and wrestling.

• The Red & Black - see right.

• The Music Box - with the addition of lower school classes and the return of lower school STEM, additional classroom space was needed.

We welcome our new music teacher, Kathleen Sanders, in her brand new space, the Music Box, located in the center of campus.

The Nicholson Center concession area was transformed into “The Red & Black” - thanks to the generous support of GWA community members who gave during our Gala Fund-A-Need request. This space has been home to not only concessions and “Super Dave’s” cooking – but it provides a place for youth cheer practices, student club meetings, senior class luncheons, athletic banquets, upper school classes, a special breakfast for our local vets on Veterans Day and an athletic Hall of Fame display. So much Bulldog life happens in the concessions area, and it was a space worthy of an upgrade.

While the traditions and celebrations will continue, the introduction of modernization and innovation will enhance every new experience for generations to come in “The Red & Black.”

It seems like nothing, but the high school students make the younger students feel seen and wanted here!”

THE GWA School communities are everywhere.

And each one is a little different.

At George Walton Academy, our community goes a little bit above and beyond typical communities - we are a family. And together, we are the heart of what makes GWA what it is today.

Our cherished senior/first grader tradition of friendship, and mentorship between two generations of Bulldogs often extends beyond school hours. Most first graders show up to senior night celebrations and a lot of the seniors come see their first graders’ musical performances - some even take their first graders for ice cream or go trick or treating with them!

| BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

Just watching our students interact with faculty and staff during class changes is remarkable. They say hello to each other, the majority know most everyone by name, students hold the door for others, and lower school kids are seen waving at the older kids or giving them high fives or fist bumps.

Admissions open houses have become events that showcase our school and our students as we rely on our student ambassadors to help tour prospective families. These families get to see the school from our students’ perspectives and it demonstrates the amount of trust we have in our students to be personable as they share their excitement about GWA.

Family

A lot of the teachers stay in touch with their students for their entire time at GWA and beyond. They form lines that the seniors walk through on graduation day, as they file into their seats. The college counselors bookend the graduation stage as Mrs. Nabors helps straighten caps and tassels before the students accept their diplomas and Mr. Terrell is there for a fist bump once they exit the stage with their diploma. Faculty and staff often attend alumni weddings and other life events and we love when our graduates return to their alma mater for a visit.

It is easy to see the heart of GWA. It is a part of all of us and it is why we love this place.

Some of the special moments around campus aren’t always obvious. They are subtle - seeing little kids run to Mr. David to give him one last hug before they leave for summer break, seeing Coach Whitley holding Coach Grace’s new baby at a basketball game, watching the whole basketball team run out to celebrate when Reese Gelsthorpe scored his 1,000th career point, hearing students pray before school events begin, seeing their excitement as they sing the twelve days of Christmas at the Christmas Tree Presentation, seeing Jack Boyer finish singing O’ Holy Night and being greeted with a hug by his lower school chorus teacher, Mrs. Dyer. It is great to see fun moments like when the seniors called their first graders over to help

them drop eggs from the balcony for their honors physics project, or when the whole school joins together in the middle of campus to cheer on state-bound teams throughout the year. The fifth grade safety patrols guide the smaller kids to class at carpool, and the reading buddy program pairs lower school kids together for reading time. As a parent, your heart might skip a beat when you hear nurse Libba’s voice through the phone, but more often than not, she is just assuring you that she took care of your child when they fell down at recess, or had a tummy ache. And it is always a treat to run into your child’s teacher at a sporting event and have her tell you about something funny your child did in their class. Before you know

it, you are watching as your students graduate from kindergarten, then fifth grade and eventually George Walton Academy - all of these things are what make this place special.

Parents, faculty, staff and students spend a lot of time here as a part of the GWA family. And like all families, we have our ups and downs, but the truth is, most of us wouldn’t trade it for the world. Even as we gathered to pay tribute to Mr. Nicholson this summer in the building named after him, it was easy to see that even though many of the attendees hadn’t been back to GWA in years, they were all still a special part of the history of the school and still a part of the family.

Jenny Duke Director of Lower School Our commitment to quality researchbased education, combined with a range of specialized classes, highly trained teachers, and a well-balanced daily schedule, sets our school apart as a haven for young learners from K3 to 5th grade in our Lower School.

One of the key aspects that sets GWA apart is our exceptional curriculum.

Rooted in rigorous research and educational best practices, our curriculum serves as a strong foundation for academic success. It is designed to challenge students intellectually, while also fostering critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. We believe in equipping our students with the tools they need to thrive not only academically but also as well-rounded individuals in the modern world.

To ensure personalized attention and focused instruction, GWA maintains small class sizes. Our teachers are not only highly trained professionals but

also possess a genuine passion for teaching and a heart for their students.

This combination of expertise and care creates a nurturing environment where students feel supported and motivated to excel. By keeping class sizes small, we can provide individualized attention, tailor instruction to each student’s needs, and foster a strong sense of community within the classroom.

Small group instruction is a vital part of our teaching methodology. We understand that every student learns at their own pace and has unique educational needs. By utilizing small group instruction, we can meet students where they are, providing targeted interventions and enrichment activities.

This approach allows us to move all students forward in their knowledge and understanding of core subjects while also accommodating their special interests and individual learning styles.

In addition to our core curriculum, our Lower School offers a wide range of special area classes that allow students to explore their interests and talents. From physical education (PE) to music, Spanish, Bible studies, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), library, and art, our students have ample opportunities to discover and develop their passions.

These classes not only provide an outlet for self-expression but also promote holistic development, enabling students to explore various facets of their abilities and nurturing their individual talents.

At GWA, we believe that a wellbalanced daily schedule is crucial for optimal learning. Our lower school students enjoy a carefully crafted schedule that maximizes learning time while also incorporating special area classes, recess, and opportunities for movement. This balanced approach ensures that students have ample time to engage in physical activity, socialize with their peers, and recharge, all while maintaining a productive and conducive learning environment. Field trips also play a vital role in experiential learning.

From K3 to 5th grade, we are committed to providing a comprehensive educational experience that prepares students for future success. We nurture their intellectual curiosity, foster a love for learning, and empower them to become lifelong learners. Our school offers unique opportunities that inspire and shape the minds of young learners to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.

PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER Each year, fourth graders wrap up their measurement unit with a real-world project. Students were given full-length pieces of lumber to measure with accuracy using practical tools such as measuring tapes and speed squares. Next, students had to assist Mrs. Griggs’ father with cutting their boards and they assembled their projects using drills with different bits and coordinating screws. Lastly, students had to calculate the perimeter and area of their projects to the nearest half-inch.

In addition to this project becoming a tradition, Mrs. Griggs said, “Real-world skills are invaluable to young students, and connecting math concepts to different situations brings math to life while preparing them for the future.”

in the middle OF CONSTRUCTION Middle School is an exciting time of growth, exploration, and change, and at GWA, we embrace this unique stage of development and design our program intentionally to meet the needs of students during this transitional period. We follow a standard middle school interdisciplinary team model where each grade level team is comprised of 4 teachers, one from each of the core academic disciplines. The team collaborates to serve students’ academic needs as well as support their developmental growth throughout the year. Middle School holds rigorous academic standards while providing a myriad of opportunities for students to explore their curiosities and passions through the arts, technology, athletics, and more. Every day our students are learning more about themselves, each other, and the world around them. They are learning to be good stewards of

all that has been entrusted to them.

Ultimately, they are learning what it means to live a life of integrity and purpose and to make a positive impact on the world.

Q&A with some of our amazing middle school teachers!

KATIE DICKERSON What are you most proud of from the 2022-23 school year? “I am most proud of integrating all subject areas into our ancient civilization units. It was awesome watching students explore our ancient world through STEM as well as exploring their creativity with writing. Mrs. Burkhart and I were able to incorporate a lot together, so students had a full and meaningful experience.”

What do you love about GWA? ”GWA feels like a family! I truly feel like this is my second home and that so many people (even in other divisions) are part of my team. I also love that we can be creative with our teaching craft and that students have the opportunity to really be well-rounded. JOHNNY GRIFFIN Tell us a little bit about yourself.

“I graduated from Emory University and I am heading into my 36th year of teaching. I love to read biographies about historical figures. I also have written a play or two. My goal is to lead our 8th graders in using their higher levels of thinking to discover lessons that can be learned from a study of Georgia’s past. We have an interdisciplinary unit every nine weeks with the English classes; the end-of-year project is our combined “Griffinia Government Project.”

What are you most proud of from the 2022-23 school year?

“I enjoyed watching these seniors enjoy the graduation process, as they were one of my first 8th classes. I enjoyed the creation of our GWA Badminton Club, and our interdisciplinary units with the English classes.”

What excites you about the 2023-24 school year? ”I am excited to teach a new set of 8th graders about how great a state we have; also, I want to encourage them to develop their insights and perspectives on the significance of certain historical events. Students’ growth is our focus, as each teacher strives to help each learner to grow in their knowledge, skills, and opportunities.”

CHELSEA BYRD Tell us a little bit about yourself.

“I have my MAT in English. I teach students how to think for themselves through reading, writing, and analysis. I hope to instill in them a love of learning and a desire to follow their interests.”

What are you most proud of from the 2022-23 school year?

“I am really proud of our middle school department. We have become a part of each others’ lives. It feels like a family, one where we are interested in each others’ lives and not afraid to poke fun at one another.”

What do you love about GWA? ”I love the freedom to try new activities in the classroom. I love the support we receive from other teachers, staff, and parents. I like that the school is set up to allow us to get to know our students better.”

What excites you about the 2023-24 school year? ”I am excited to continue our tradition of mega relay, which allows us to start building relationships with our students and start the year off in a unique way. I don’t know that any other middle school gets to start the school year with a day of fun. Lastly, I am excited about working with my team. We are always looking for ways to support each other and see if we can do any units or activities cross-curricular.”

finishing details The Upper School offers each student a chance to grow and shine. We continued our many great traditions in academics, athletics, and the arts while introducing new traditions like the senior retreat. We watched our athletics compete across the state all year long and shared in the excitement of bringing home state championships in girl’s basketball and boy’s and girl’s lacrosse. The performances put on by the drama department during the year were incredible, from watching Luke Lewis become both Jekyll and Hyde in the fall One Act production to listening to Jack Boyer sing while feeding a killer plant in the spring musical. Our senior class impressed us with their college acceptances and scholarship offerings. Our freshman class represented extremely well at awards night by winning the Laws of Life essay contest for the school and four others gained recognition for All-State status in their respective sports as freshmen.

We continued a strong tradition of academic rigor and are excited to introduce new course offerings in the arts and at the AP level next year. We believe that education should address the whole child, and we believe that we are the best around!

I inherited them late because of a last minute scheduling need, and they had to leave a teacher they loved.

books in addition to a wide array of poetry and short stories. They wrote extensively, researched, and kept our classroom morale up. They accepted every challenge I gave them and rose to the occasion. I am proud of every single one of them for their optimism, perseverance, and incredible growth this year.

What do you love about GWA? Our students and teachers have made incredible accomplishments, and we support and celebrate each other every chance we get.

What excites you about the 202324 school year? I am excited about a fresh start and renewed commitment to improving every year. Personally, I am excited about updating the senior English program to include more rigor, reading, and a wider array of writing projects. I am committed to making sure that our seniors are ready to face the challenges of college writing and reading.

LAURA NABORS What are you most proud of from the 2022-23 school year? I am most proud of advocating with and for our students! I love to empower them to find their voice and take risks.

ALEX CALLAWAY What excites you about the 202324 school year? I’m excited about continuing to push students towards academic excellence and watch them meet every single goal we place in front of them. Also, being able to get outside the classroom and create some real life connections to mathematics.

GOING BEYOND CLASSROOM WALLS Kellie Watts Division Head, Upper and Middle School Academic Dean Veteran high school math and science teacher and math department chair Mrs. Kellie Watts has agreed to serve as Upper & Middle School Division Head and Academic Dean. After a substantive career as a consultant, Kellie entered the teaching profession and has been a well-respected leader in our classrooms. She serves as a mentor to students and faculty as a collaborative leader in our academic honor societies and on faculty committees. She recently served on the Head of School Search Committee.

Kellie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Georgia Tech. Her innovative approach to education is grounded in her background as an accomplished mechanical engineer. Kellie brings a strong faith, creative problem-solving skills, and a deep love of people and learning to the GWA community. In addition, she is admired for her servant’s heart, and caring and approachable demeanor.

“I am both humbled and grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the students, families, and faculty of George Walton Academy in a leadership capacity,” said Kellie.

“Since joining the GWA family, I have grown to love every aspect of what makes GWA so very special. There were over 32,000 submissions from high schoolers across the state of Georgia in the Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest, and freshman Journey Allen’s essay was awarded 3rd Runner Up in the spring. In fall of 2023, Journey shared her Laws of Life essay with a group of Rotary club members and teachers at a conference and workshop at Emory University. In her Laws of Life essay, Journey shared the grief she felt at the loss of her father. She and all of the English teachers at George Walton Academy gave students the opportunity to share their life lesson in a Laws of Life essay. Each selected a meaningful “law” that reflects personal experiences shared through a 500700 word story.

From the arts to games and fitness, life skills, and much more – Winter Term offered students a chance to delve into a subject, experience hands-on learning, put what they have learned into practice, and explore topics outside of the regular curriculum.

outdoor classroom. They traveled to Hard Labor Creek State Park, Stone Mountain Park, and Arabia Mountain Park. Students explored the natural ecosystems and enjoyed the breathtaking views while learning about trail safety, the potential dangers of the great outdoors, and how to document their adventures.

Ninth grader Roland Crutchfield said, “Arabia Mountain State Park was my favorite hike yet. I wish we could have Winter Term all year.” Sophomore Hayden Byers added, “The hike at Arabia was really cool and the views were awesome!”

Mr. Jameson’s “Prosthetics for Costume Design” Winter Term class was a fast-paced, hands-on crash course on the topic. Primarily focused on an original character design of their choosing, students were given a choice to life-cast themselves to create a wearable appliance or sculpt and paint a fully realized character maquette.

Following a mock design meeting, students had nine days to sketch, sculpt, mold, cast, and complete their stage or film characters.

Our lower students enjoyed extra story time during winter term as upper school students stopped by to read in their classrooms.

Two Winter Term classes incorporated this activity into their learning – one group explored elementary education, while the other examined popular childhood fairy tales and their grim origins as well their influence over modern culture.

Students in Dr. Dibble’s “Sweating Copper” class learned to unsolder, clean and resolder pipes. They worked as a group to create a “dibs” sign (with no leaks!).

Video Production class collaborated with students from Can You Teach Me Football? (for girls) to create promotional photos and video clips for their very own “media day.” Dressed in their football gear, the girls visited stations for interviews, dance clips, drill clips, and photos.

GWA third grader Hagon Yeater shared his knowledge and his passion for fly fishing with Dr. Nguyen’s Winter Term fly fishing class. He did an awesome job showing his gear, presenting his PowerPoint slideshow, and answering questions from the class.

Since this presentation was Hagon’s third-grade Genius Hour project, the timing for this opportunity was perfect!

INTERNSHIPS Winter Term Internship opportunities allow for juniors and seniors to get real-world experience in the work force and explore future career possibilities. Ninetyfive of our upperclassmen were able to participate in the internship program.

Upper school students flew planes, worked on cars, learned about producing radio broadcasts, learned about marketing and retail, worked alongside doctors, veterinarians, and other medical professionals, and learned from judges in the courtroom.

GWA junior Kameron Atkins landed a dream Winter Term internship in Boise, Idaho.

He hopes to pursue a career as a pilot and spent winter term learning about the

fundamentals of flight and the job of fighting fires from the air. Kameron said, “I was able to take a Discovery Flight where I actually got up in the air and took control of the plane, flying from Nampa Airport to Twin Falls, Idaho.” He gained valuable experience in the air and on the ground as he spent time with pilots and personnel in the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Air Force, Boise Fire Dispatch Center, National Interagency Coordination Center, National Interagency Fire Center, and Turbo Air Mechanics to learn the behind the scenes and logistics of fighting a fire.

These invaluable experiences showed them what they might or might not want to pursue as a future career.

Eleven GWA students and two faculty members traveled to London for an educational tour with a focus on STEM during Winter Term.

Students visited Oxford University where they went to Christ Church College, as well as the Bodleian Libraries, the Radcliff Camera, and the History of Science Museum.

They went to Bletchley Park to observe where the code breakers were during WWII, as well as to Bath where they saw the Pulteney Bridge. They also visited the Roman Baths, the Bath Abbey, and the Royal Crescent.

Finally, the group traveled to London for visits to Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, a Thames River Cruise, Tower Bridge with the Pump Room, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Faraday Museum and Royal Institute, Covent Garden, the Science Museum, and the Royal Observatory. Senior Sara Bryan stated, “I really enjoyed seeing the different types of architecture of the churches and Roman baths.”

We experienced real-world applications of biology, physics, electrochemistry, history, coding, early civilizations, and culture. Students were also exposed to the opportunities of studying abroad at numerous college campuses. What an amazing adventure we had!” Teacher Suzy Quinlan agreed, “We went from sunup past sundown, traveling on airplanes, boats, buses, the tube (subway), and on foot. We grew as individuals, as a group, and as global citizens. We laughed until we cried and got way too little sleep, but we experienced a lot that England had to offer!”

Through our educational partnerships with St. Paul’s School Barcelona in Spain and Saint-Denis International School in Loches, France, our students are offered incredible opportunities to travel and experience daily life in other cultures and create life-long friendships during Winter Term. Moneli Shekarbakht traveled to Spain and lived with her exchange partner, Gloria, while Emerson Sheldon experienced life in France with her exchange partner, Samuelle.

“My experience in Barcelona, Spain was beyond phenomenal as I got to experience both the European and Spanish lifestyle and learn a lot about their culture and delicious cuisine with my closest friends. The views and famous architecture that Barcelona offered were one of a kind as the day-today weather was priceless.

Most importantly, I was able to create life-long bonds with the exchange students along with the students at St. Paul’s School, as my friends and I were able to step out of our comfort zones to be more socially involved and to adapt to the unique culture.”

I visited multiple castles, and towns, and ate lots of delicious bread. My exchange student, Samuelle, is like a sister to me, and by the end of the month, I didn’t want to leave France at all.”

Jon Terrell Upper School Assistant Principal, Director of College Counseling Well, here we are again! Another summer and another successful #gwacollegetour!

Volume II. As told by the coolest summer tour guide around. This trip is not for the faint of heart. The College Counseling Office braved the odds and risked their sanity to take our beloved students on a 5-day, 110 hour journey!

Before I continue, I must send out a very special THANK YOU to His Majesty Coach for sponsoring the college tour and Mrs. Heather Dokes for making it happen.

Good people are great to know and even better to work with!

What no one knew is that our school charter bus broke down Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. while headed back to campus just days before our Monday departure. Mrs. Dokes spent the weekend searching for buses, planes, vans and trains! But managed to work out a last-minute deal over the weekend with His Majesty and arrived on campus with the bus a mere 6 hours before take-off.

This year’s most excellent adventure took 23 daring students (lead by

veteran college tour visitors Reese Benhke, McKenna Rutledge, and McNair Shannahan – who through George Walton have visited 24 different college campuses (in two summers) to four states, 13 colleges, 1800 miles and two Buc-ee’s gas stations. We left with the sunrise on Monday, June 6, to first head to Alabama where we visited the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Samford University, the University of Montevallo and finished

the day at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. From there we moseyed east to Mississippi to visit Mississippi State University, where they hosted us for breakfast on campus.

Next was a stop at Ole Miss, where stud GWA alum Perry Jake Stone (‘22) stopped by to meet up with us and tell the students about his experience.

To finish up the day, we ended at Mississippi College where Mr. Terrell beat their Dean of Enrollment services in a quick game of racquetball during the tour!

OLE MISS

After the state of Mississippi, we ventured south to the Bayou state. The Hampton Inn & Suites on St. Charles Avenue hosted us for the night and the next morning we took the trolley a mile down the street to visit both Loyola University and Tulane University. That afternoon was a nice visit to Louisiana State University where we met Mike the Tiger. We shot back to New Orleans though because we had reservations to take a Swamp Boat Tour and got to enjoy some up close and personal interactions with a few gators! Put that on your bucket list if you’ve never experienced it before. We finished the

day with dinner at GilliGil’s Island – highly recommended if you are ever in Slidell (outside of New Orleans), before heading east for a midnight stop at Buc-ee’s #2 to reenergize and a stay at Orange Beach to finish the week.

Thursday we enjoyed some rays on the beach, turned Hudson Geoffroy into a beautiful Merman and finished with a visit to the University of West Florida. Late night crabbing memories and hanging out by the pool were a fun, relaxing break after the non-stop schedule Mr. Terrell had put everyone through. Finally, on Friday, we made our way to the University of South Alabama and then north toward the plains to visit Auburn University. Then we called it a week and made our way back to Funroe, GA!

Special thanks go out to Ms. Phillips and Mrs. Nabors for all their work and dedication to the students. Likewise, to Mrs. Dokes for driving the 1800+ miles, putting up with all of us, and for being an absolute rock star. I also want to thank the 23 students that went with open minds, great manners and positive attitudes. I couldn’t have asked for better students to proudly represent our school all over the South.

Where will we head next summer…?

Only time will tell. (And maps and planning.) But make no mistake, more colleges and more exciting adventures are on the way! So mark your calendars for June 2 through the 7, 2024!!

PI ST MISSISSIP “The tour gave me more insight into the college application process and I learned integral things such as what a “FAFSA” is and how there are multiple scholarship opportunities for even the littlest things- such as being left-handed. Additionally, by touring the many campuses and viewing their layouts, I discovered that I personally like medium to large sized universities because they offer a myriad of clubs, have long lasting traditions, amazing Greek life and very scenic campuses. And even though we were on a rigorous schedule that often offered us limited amounts of sleep every night, I’d have to say that one of my favorite parts was getting up before sunrise and traveling in and around the different college towns to get a feel for the city life.”

“Last year, I was forced to go on the college tour by my mom. I was pleasantly surprised on how much I learned while also having fun.

This year, I chose to go on my own without my mom forcing me to! The night activities are my favorite part because I get closer to people that I hadn’t known before. Some of the colleges that weren’t tailored to my liking, but I knew other people in the group enjoyed them. The colleges we visited had great variety and helped me find out what I do and don’t like about colleges and what I want to find in the college I go to. I learned a lot on the college tour and can’t wait to go next year!”

THE UNSUNG HERO OF COUNSELING Carolyn Phillips Counseling Administrative Support If you ask any of our counselors about the glue that holds their department together, they would, without hesitation say “Carolyn Phillips.” Described by Laura Nabors as genuinely kind, and someone who loves GWA, Carolyn has been part of the school for nearly 20 years. Born in upstate New York in a small town called Olean, Carolyn graduated from Bryant College (now University) in Rhode Island. She started working in the library when her son, Ben, was in school. Ben, a member of the class of 2014, is now a successful web designer in Atlanta. Carolyn stayed at GWA and moved over to the counseling office five years ago. In the counseling office, she says “there is never a dull moment, but we have camaraderie.

I love all the people I work with.”

Although she was somewhat mortified at the idea of being featured in the Bulldog magazine, she is definitely worthy of

recognition for the dedication she has shown over the years to our school community. “I’m a behind the scenes girl. I don’t like to be in the spotlight so working in the counseling office is perfect for me.”

Exceptionally organized and proficient in time management, Carolyn keeps things running smoothly in the counseling office. Her cheery personality is also a breath of fresh air to everyone she interacts with. “I like to think I’m fun,” she said.

In her free time, Carolyn volunteers at the Monroe Walton Center for the Arts and the earrings she makes are available in the gift shop. “I consider myself a closet artist,” said Carolyn, who not only makes jewelry, but paints and teaches in-home paint parties. She even sometimes helps a friend of hers with her cookie business.

Carolyn is also known amongst her peers for her abilities on the pickleball court. “I like to have a good time, but I’m also very competitive,” she said.

Carolyn’s favorite thing about doing what she does is watching the students advance through the years. “I’ve had the advantage of seeing these kids that I taught library skills to and now I’m getting to see them grow up and then try to help them get into a college.

It’s been really fun watching the progression.”

There was even a time when she briefly left the library to help teach second grade and she is excited to see those students going into the ninth grade.

“Those are my babies! It’s going to be cool when they get to be seniors.”

As far as her time in the counseling office, she’s proud of the progress they’ve made as a team. “It’s a great group of people. We all get along. We all kind of learned together.” Each year, our counseling office proves their worth as our students’ counseling needs are met and they earn millions of dollars in scholarships and strive to get into the colleges of their choice. None of their successes would be as achievable without the help of Carolyn Phillips.

GWA junior Emily Arenas is a proud member of the WWEX Racing team. With her grip firmly on the wheel of the No. 3 Legends car, Emily has her sights set on a future in NASCAR racing. She has earned eight wins, 17 top-three finishes and nine top-five finishes across 36 races in 2022. Emily commented, “I am so thankful to be a part of WWEX Racing and I am looking forward to growing together as a team.

We are one team, one family, always moving forward.”

Riley Edwards GWA is dedicated to preparing students to excel in college and careers and we love to see them take advantage of every opportunity to explore their interests. Junior Riley Edwards co-authored a medical paper concerning “Balloon Kyphoplasty in Adolescents and Young Adults” which was accepted by the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics to be presented as a medical poster at their Fall 2022 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

The experience of writing the paper will help Riley in his pursuit of a career in the field of medicine and he demonstrated the ability to grasp the difficult subject matter. Riley commented, “It was a challenge since I did not have much background knowledge of medicine, in addition to getting the paper and poster done in due time over a few months

with deadlines and school as limiting factors. I even had to dress up to do an introductory video, something I have never done before.” Additionally, Riley had the opportunity to shadow with an orthopedic spine surgeon over the summer. He gained firsthand knowledge in an operating room and had the chance to engage in discussions with the surgeon on his paper’s topic. Great work, Riley! We can’t wait to see where your future path leads.

Jordan Smothers Jordan Smothers, a rising Senior at George Walton Academy, represented Walton County and The American Legion Post 64 (Monroe) at the 2023 Boys State at Valdosta State University.

After the week long program, 2023 American Legion Boys State (an intensive study and immersion into government studies), Jordan graduated. He was also chosen to represent The Department of Georgia as the 2023 Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist.

He will now move onto the National Finals to compete for a $10,000 scholarship.

COLLABORATION IS KEY IN FINE ARTS Our performing arts were on fire during the 2022-23 school year.

The entertaining performances kept audiences in the seats and the collaboration with the visual arts teachers and students enhanced the performances by tenfold.

Our Fine Arts Department put on a spectacular version of Little Shop of Horrors this spring. The performances and the set were outstanding. Upper school art teacher Mr. Jameson said, “with combined efforts from select students and the entire Art Department staff, we were excited to present an updated and elaborate stage experience never before seen at GWA. It is our hope that this production is the beginning of a new chapter in George Walton performing arts, giving our community a more engaging stage and film experience through a cross-curricular and collaborative process.”

Jameson led the efforts to create four different versions of the plant, Audrey II, in its various stages of growth and helped plan and construct the set. Art teachers Megan Sims and Peyton Stumpf helped tremendously with the set, makeup, costumes and lighting and drama teacher Kristie McDevitt made the most of the incredible artistry by directing the show.

Seniors Jack Boyer (Seymour) and EllieGrace Quinlan (Audrey) played the lead roles alongside Luke Lewis (evil dentist, Orin). Junior Cidella Sims puppeteered the plant who was voiced by Athletic Director Mark Whitley and Lower School Dean of Students Derek Hill.

Chemical Imbalance was another remarkable show that our drama department presented this past school year. An adaptation of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,

the darkly comic play was a huge hit that entertained standing room only crowds. Yet another collaborative effort from the art department, the play was codirected by Kristie McDevitt and senior Jack Boyer. In his acting debut, Luke Lewis, dazzled and terrified crowds with his portrayal of the iconic Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde character. The whole cast played very well off of each other and the show was a hit. Olivia Colon showed off her costume design skills in dressing Jack Boyer.

Our middle and high school theatre classes’ performance of “Dorothy Meets Alice,” a comedy/adventure

by Joseph Robinette, was another hit! Director Kristie McDevitt praised the students for their amazing show, stating, “I am extremely proud of these actors, several new to the stage, for their excellent work! They put in a great deal of time memorizing lines,

blocking scenes, developing each individual character, and collaborating together as a cast, to pull off an extraordinary play which delighted the audiences.” The play featured two of literature’s most famous young ladies meeting in the Tulgey Wood, a strange location between Oz and Wonderland.

It was filled with silly rhymes, surprises, and a cautionary tale.

Footloose (presented by the GWA Dance Academy, headed by dance teacher Genie Wiggins) was a celebration of some of our favorite movie musicals including (but not limited to) High School Musical, Teen Beach Movie and, of course, Footloose! The show featured jazz, lyrical, hip-hop and musical theatre dance and was mostly studentchoreographed. Our competition team also performed their competition pieces and our Beyond the Bell dancers showed their stuff as well!

ART SUPERSTARS Our extremely talented senior art students presented their Senior Art Show in the spring. They displayed a retrospective of their best works, including photography, paintings, illustrations, and sculptures. NEXT LEVEL ATHLETICS Mark Whitley Athletic Director

“This past year was a great one for GWA Athletics.” This is how I started this very article last year for the Bulldog Magazine. I don’t know that I could have imagined that the past year, 2223, could have been better, but in fact it was. We started a new era in Bulldog Athletics this year as we entered a new Athletic Association, with GIAA-the Georgia Independent Athletic Association. This was a decision that we researched thoroughly and did not enter into lightly. Several things had to be addressed before we decided to make the leap of faith, and I’m glad we did. We could not have had a better outcome for our athletic department. The future looks bright for greater success as a school overall as we enter year two of this new association.

As I mentioned last year, we don’t want to just go to the playoffs, we want to go deep and in fact WIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. We did just that. We won three!

Let me give you a quick overview of the year, and then I’ll break it down for you season by season. We offer 24 competitive varsity sports, (that includes men and women) that compete in the fall, winter, and spring. Twenty-six if you include e-sports and majorettes. Every sport, except for two, made it to the Elite 8 level and we won State Championships in three: girls basketball, boys and girls lacrosse. This is a first for all three programs in school history!

In the fall, all six sports did an outstanding job with football and girl’s cross country winning Region Championships for the first time in school history or in a very long time. Competitive cheer and girl’s cross country both finished fourth in the state. This team effort was a great showing and a long time coming from their hard work and commitment to excellence. GWA is looking for greater things from these fall sports this year as we were very young across the board last year. Big things are coming! Keep watching!

In the winter, we had great showings from our swim team and wrestling team. Both teams compete as a team, yet it consists of the individual efforts of the members of each team to create team scores at the end of the day. We had several individual

State Champions. Morgan Davis won an individual state championship in the 50-meter freestyle. Anthony Pham placed 3rd in the 500 freestyle leading the boys team to an overall 3rd place finish. Adam Denhardt won his weight class at the traditional wrestling championships, and Belle Rabe became our first female wrestler to win a state championship in her weight class. Now to basketball…. The boys had a great season boasting a 24-6 overall record. Reese Gelsthorpe, led the GWA Dogs scoring over 1000 points in his career. Along with several other seniors and a good mix of underclassmen, they drew a tough opponent in the Final 4 and just missed the championship game. The girls, however, finished 22-4 overall and not only made the final game but WON the first State Championship in the school’s history. Three of the four losses came against the same team, (Lakeview), who were in our region. Led by Ashley Hill, the GIAA Player of the Year, our girls handled everyone down the stretch. Here’s the coolest part… they’re all back! Coach Lori Hines was also named GIAA Coach of the Year which set the bar for the spring season of sports teams to get after it and finish the year strong!

That we did! Spring sports did not disappoint. Region Championships were won in girls soccer, girls track, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls lacrosse. baseball, boys soccer, and boys and girls golf were Region Runner-ups.

Again, most of these teams charged through the playoffs and had successful finishes. Girls track finished 5th in the State. The boys and girls lacrosse teams both won State

Championships. Coach Scott Jackson and Coach Jamie Lill were both named GIAA Coaches of the Year as well. We are so proud of all our teams! The bar has been set, so where do we go from here?

Well, success breeds success. With our successful year in sports, we have had numerous student athletes want to join us. Several young families have joined the family at GWA, so our Youth Program looks to be strong again next year. We have had no less than a dozen middle school/high school families join us as well in over seven sports. Our numbers are not the only growth, we are experiencing in athletics either.

We are in the middle of construction with our new gym. We are scheduled to be in the new building by mid-August.

So, the volleyball teams will be able to host events in the new facility while at the same time our competition cheer/ wrestling teams will have their own space finally for practice and dressing facilities to accommodate them. The Wrestling team, and the volleyball team will also have their new dressing facilities available.

Exciting times here on campus at George Walton Academy.

We are thrilled that we not only have a motto but are really living up to it. It Can Be Done… We Lead! Keep the Hammer down, Dogs! We still have Unfinished Business.

FROM THE GROUND UP Scott Jackson

Youth Athletic Director, Lacrosse Coach, Faculty Scott Jackson sat down to chat about the process that built the GWA lacrosse program into the powerhouse program it is today, winning state at multiple levels and growing the sport in Monroe.

January 2019 was the start of Lacrosse at GWA and Scott Jackson has led every step of the way. After living in California, Scott and his wife Amanda (director of Student Life) were excited to move their growing family to a place that was a little more stable with core values that they shared and George Walton Academy provided that opportunity.

After coaching lacrosse for five years at GWA, Scott attributes his success to starting at the youth levels. “Our freshmen know how to play. When we first started, our freshmen couldn’t spell it, so we started on the youth program, built into our feeder, allowed those kids to grow together. We made it a top down approach - everything we did with the high school kids, we modified that for the younger kids and built that sense of pride in that program. I think that’s

where we’ve had a lot of that success.

The kids are proud of what they’ve built.”

In the first year, they won a lightning championship and then a junior, then a senior and then this year we had four championships - senior boys and girls, and then the high school varsity boys and girls. “We knew it was coming. We just had to be patient. And that’s hard.

It was really gratifying knowing that it keeps getting better.”

“Next year we are going to have 18 incoming freshmen which is wild since we had 18 kids on the first team. We might have our first JV team next spring, which would be another accomplishment in terms of things that we’ve been able to do.”

GWA is the only school in the county that has a lacrosse program. Grayson and Archer are the closest schools to us offering lacrosse, followed by the Oconee schools.

“I’m very passionate about what I do, and sometimes my word choice is not always the best, but I think once parents see how much I pour into these kids, they realize how much I actually care. And there’s always a conversation afterwards, where I’m building you up. My kids know that. The only time you need to be scared is when I’m not screaming and yelling because that would be me not caring. They’ve not figured out that I don’t quit on kids. I just keep yelling.”

Scott also teaches forensics and this year has taken on the youth athletic director role. “I’m now the youth athletic director which has been great to learn under Coach Whitley and try to use some of the things that have made my program so successful and trying to share some of those ideas so we can build a more diverse athletic population. I want everyone being as successful as we’ve been the past couple of years. And obviously a huge shout out to coach Lill. She was a blessing from day one, before we even had a girls program and the work she’s done with that team, in a shorter period of time really.”

Coach Jackson gives a large amount of credit to the multiple parent coaches and volunteers that have stepped up to help coach and strengthen the lacrosse program - Drew Peckoff, Chris Frier, Coach Gantz, Reese Morrow, Kirk Kirkpatrick, Dick Jones, and the older high school kids have all been an integral part of the continued growth of the program. He went from spending four hours a day coaching every team to being able to step away a little bit and spend more time with his family. He also said that he would like to thank his wife for all of her support.

“I’m really proud of the work that we’ve done. I’m excited to keep growing it. We’re just getting started. These next couple of years we’ve got some really talented kids and it’s gonna be something special to watch.”

Remembering Mr. Nicholson development director for the Development Authority of Walton County, worked at GWA for several years under Nicholson and said he was a great leader for GWA and the county’s educational system as a whole via the countywide Walton Proud program.

William Nicholson 1945-2023

Billy Nicholson guided George Walton Academy for close to three decades.

William “Billy” Nicholson, longtime Head of School at George Walton Academy, died on June 10, 2023.

Nicholson served as the head of school for the GWA from 1990 until 2017. During Mr. Nicholson’s 27 years of service, GWA experienced impressive growth and success in academics, athletics and the arts and added a wide range of extracurricular opportunities.

We are grateful for Mr. Nicholson’s leadership, his love for our school and for the legacy he leaves behind at George Walton Academy.

Nicholson, 77, was born on July 7, 1945, in Cairo, Georgia, and began a long career in education in 1968, teaching in Dodge County after earning his degree from Georgia Southern University.

He would also earn a masters and specialist degree from the University of Georgia while continuing to teach and later served as principal in both Dodge County and then locally here in Walton County at Loganville High School.

“He was an experienced, one-on-one leader who took pride in giving people second chances,” Morris said. “However, his wisdom and actions went beyond individual students. His friendship with Walton County School District’’s thenSuperintendent Gary Hobbs strengthened the whole community through their belief in Walton Proud.

“The friendship of Billy Nicholson and Gary Hobbs inspired community leaders to get past their differences, look at the big picture and understand public and private schools must work together to benefit the entire community.

Billy inspired our community to work together to champion the education of all children in Walton County.”

Nicholson was remembered fondly by GWA employees and parents, as well.

“Mr. Nicholson was a man of great character, a great boss and role model,” Matt Reynolds, a GWA alumnus, Dean of Students, and current boys basketball coach at the school, said. “He inspired me to pursue a career in education and administration.

He loved the students, faculty and staff here at George Walton and will truly be missed.”

Tina Jordan, whose own children went to GWA and now works at the school as an administrative assistant, also had fond memories of the former headmaster.

“Mr. Nicholson was truly one of the kindest and most generous people that I have

ever known,” Jordan said.

“He helped so many of our GWA families behind the scenes through his integrity, encouragement and his strong faith. He was so dedicated to his employees and students. I will always cherish my experience working with him and the love he had for our school.

He wanted everyone to be successful. So proud that my children got to grow up in his village. He will be missed and never forgotten.”

Billy was a humble and warmhearted man who actively gave of himself to others. He joined the Army in 1968 and continued to serve in the Air National Guard completing his service as SSG in 1974. He was an active member of First Methodist Church in Monroe where he served on many committees. He was also in the Rotary Club and on the Board of the Walton County Chamber of Commerce. Billy was also a devoted family

man and friend who loved to hunt, fish, and travel with his loved ones. Those adventures took Billy throughout the U.S. and to over 30 countries giving his friends and family memories of him that will carry on.

Surviving members of his family are wife, Vicki Willis Nicholson; daughter and sonin-law, Mindy and Benjamin Harris; son and daughterin-law, Matt and Joely Nicholson; sister, Elizabeth Nicholson; grandchildren, Will Lewis, SPC Cam Lewis, Parker Nicholson, Tessa Nicholson, and Pierce Nicholson; Stepsons Clay Brewer and Chris and Jennifer Brewer; step grandsons Ryan Brewer, Derek Brewer, and Jared Brewer.

YOUNG YEARBOOK ALUMNI ARE LAYING OUT PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

Jenna Lo Class of 2020 Rising Wake Forest senior Jenna Lo is already getting a head start on her career in marketing.

Back in the spring, she did a part time marketing internship in the United Kingdom with a company called Healf. “They’re basically a startup health and wellness retail company. They sell a bunch of health products from both the U.S. and the U.K. I’m only interning for about 10 weeks. I’ve done a lot of blog post writing, uploading products to the website, and influencer outreach.”

While living in Europe for an internship seems impressive enough, it was just a precursor to her marketing internship at PepsiCo in Dallas over the summer.

“Yearbook gave me an insight into being able to be both creative and analytical at the same time - creative in creating spreads, taking photos and editing everything, but also the analytical side of keeping track of students and books that we’re selling and stuff like that,” Jenna said. “After high school, I remember thinking I want to find something that is kind of similar to that, but when I went into college I had no idea what I wanted to do until about sophomore year, I came across marketing and I was like, oh this is another way I can be creative and analytical at the same time. I’m not creating a publication or anything, but it is creative in the sense that you’re working with other people.”

“That’s another aspect about yearbook I really liked - you’re working with other people towards a common goal and being creative and that’s also part of

marketing. You are creating a campaign or a story about a brand and working with people crossfunctionally which is really awesome, so yearbook had a big inspiration as to what I wanted to find in a career. With that in mind, I took a bunch of marketing classes and through a long interviewing process in the fall, I ended up landing the internship at PepsiCo.” Jenna feels passionate about her time on the yearbook staff and the influence it had on her. “I feel like people don’t really realize how much responsibility you have to have. You’re genuinely working as a team, you’re creating a product and there are consequences behind it. There’s real responsibility and it is the best opportunity for anyone in high school to gain experience in deadlines, working in teams, working with managers. That gave me such a big competitive advantage going into college. I know how to work with people, I know how to manage my time and going from being a staff member to editor-in-chief, I know both sides of what it’s like being a part of a team. That’s what I wanted to find in a career the most was that environment of working with people.”

“GWA is a very competitive school and people are looking to add

extracurriculars, but if people want a business mindset and want to get ahead of the game, yearbook is a great place to start. And you don’t have to be creative. There really is something for everyone.”

Update: Since this interview, Jenna has accepted a full time position at PepsiCo Frito-Lay in Dallas, Texas as a Marketing Analyst post grad in 2024.

Jesse Wood Class of 2021 Starting out writing freelance for the Red & Black newspaper out of Athens, Georgia, Jesse Wood is making her mark while studying journalism at the University of Georgia.

Jesse started out as a pre vet major, but took a look back at high school and realized how much she enjoyed yearbook and writing and changed her major to journalism. She started writing articles for the culture desk at the Red and Black, just as a contributor and after a semester, they hired her as an investigative reporter. This summer, she made the move to assistant culture editor and then in the fall to breaking news reporter.

When asked about how yearbook has helped her as an aspiring journalist, she said, “I think seeing a story when maybe other people might not, because we definitely had to fill all those pages with something - finding the people that we thought deserved a platform at the school has taught me to find people that deserve a platform in Athens.”

Jesse even has a famous football player who follows her on instagram. She had the opportunity to interview former UGA player Champ Bailey during a screening of Stephanie Calabrese’s (filmmaker, photojournalist, and former GWA mom) moving documentary, Unspoken. The film focuses on the racial divide that happens in our own Monroe, Georgia.

Jesse was shocked by the film, calling it “eye-opening” and encourages everyone in Monroe to see it to get a better understanding about our pasts.

She is starting her classes in the Grady School of Journalism this fall semester.

She also has an internship at the Oglethorpe Echo, which is the newspaper that Grady College pairs with Oglethorpe County to create. “I do general news there. It is a very small and rural place.

Next week I’m writing about a new Papa John’s they’re opening.”

Jesse said her time at George Walton challenged her to explore many different interests and that made her comfortable enough to change her major when she knew she wasn’t in the right place at UGA. “Mrs. Jones and Mr. Cole really pushed me to do what I was interested in and maybe not what everyone else was doing.”

Maddy Marable Class of 2022 As the youngest of the alumni featured here, Maddy Marable has decided to continue her time on the yearbook staff at the University of Georgia as a member of the Pandora Yearbook staff. She even was in charge of the National Championship spread in last year’s yearbook.

“Yearbook prepared me because I had to step up and be a leader in group projects and when it comes to Pandora, next year I’m going to be the marketing editor and I’m going to have to manage people again, so being yearbook editor-inchief in high school really helped on my resume. I’m going to be managing the

social media and covering events as they happen - taking pictures and video and posting them.”

“I feel like I’m organized and I can manage my time really well. It honestly feels like it is easier than high school.

Intro to sports management was my favorite class last year. I’m hoping to double major in sports management and graphic design.” Yearbook definitely influenced her interest in graphic design. “I had no clue about it before yearbook, but I fell in love with it. GWA prepared us a lot for college and I have felt ready to take the classes.”

Elizabeth Carter Class of 2020 Elizabeth Carter has been staying busy while pursuing her career in graphic design. Going into her senior year at Piedmont University, she works as a graphic designer in the advancement department of the school. She also does design for the ROAR magazine, the student run newspaper, and she will be in charge of the design for the Piedmont University yearbook. Although she hasn’t fully decided what area of graphic design she wants to concentrate in, she has a strong interest in designing more sustainable packaging and textile design.

Elizabeth has been interested in letters and typography as long as she can remember, but it was when she became a part of the George Walton Academy yearbook staff that things really started to click. Although she started college as an art therapy major, graphic design pulled her away and she hopes to use her skills to help people in other ways.

“I’m the only student worker doing design at this point. Technically, my title is publications designer, but I’ve been

doing any design work that they need for advancement at Piedmont.”

“I do yearbook at Piedmont and this year I will be the head designer. I’m coming up with the templates that they need to use. I’ll get a lot of control this year and hope I can teach people to be a little more creative about their layout designs.

I also get to design the cover. Yearbook was definitely my first introduction to graphic design. I always liked looking at packaging and fun designs and when someone told me about a website where you could download fonts, I was like, cool!

Yearbook was my first introduction to the Adobe software and I just really enjoyed designing spreads and using stories and photography and editing each page to make it look cohesive and bringing everything together. It was really interesting to me.”

“I thought I was going to go into art therapy. As a very empathetic person, I would take on everyone else’s problems too easily. I went into a graphic design class and I remembered back to yearbook in high school and it clicked that, oh yeah, I’m good at this. I really enjoy doing it and don’t have to go into therapy to help people. I can use design to help people.”

“I really liked the yearbook program at GWA and I enjoyed my time while I was there. I am going to take my yearbook back to school because I really want to take inspiration from some of those spreads and put more creativity into next year’s book.”

“George Walton did help me because I felt like I had to work really hard and push to do better. Going into school, I had a good work ethic. Mrs. Jones helped me a lot by introducing me to graphic design and I love Miss Pickens. She also inspired me creatively. I had AP art with Mr. Reagan and he helped a lot with my artistic skills.”

KATY POOLE Katy Poole Class of 2006 Katy Poole, George Walton Academy Class of 2006, is a nurse practitioner with 11 years of medical experience.

After her own struggles with infertility and witnessing a “huge lapse in care” as a patient trying to navigate these struggles, Katy recognized a need and embarked upon a new adventure in coaching individuals going through the egg-freezing process or trying to improve overall fertility.

learning back at GWA to be able to understand the legitimacy of websites, critically evaluating data and literature to make sure it is evidence-based.

“My foundations for that started in the seventh grade when I did research projects. That paved the way for the critical thinking and perseverance that set the foundation for what allowed me to continue and start my own business.”

She also recognized the successes of her fellow classmates and talked about how beneficial it is to have a network of fellow classmates with shared educational experiences that she can reach out to when she needs to and she can share her expertise as well.

This has been helpful to Katy during every step of the way in starting her business. “You have these people that can step in and they are only a text or phone call away,” she said.

“GWA was great at setting up foundations and that is really important with education and with business,” Katy said. “As you get older and you become a professional, those kind of pillars are critical. As a new business, I’m doing networking, marketing, accounting and able to take that education I had years ago and kind of use that in different directions. It has really set me up to be successful. Being a student was not always my favorite thing but it forced me to get through and accomplish the goals set by our teachers and GWA as a whole.”

“You don’t always have to be the smartest kid in class, but if you show up and you keep working and you keep trying and you ask for help when you need it, you can do whatever you want to do in this world,” Katy shared. “The biggest thing I want to teach my kids is that you can do anything you want to do. You just have to be smart, be hardworking, not give up and ask for help. Those pillars are what led me to be where I am now.”

Although her years of education and hard work are evident from her work experience, Katy remains humble about her path that started in Monroe, Georgia and led to a calling to help individuals start families, “people will look at me and say, wow, if Katy Poole can start a business, anyone can.”

Class of 2004 Hugh Williamson is planning a wedding with his fiance for 2024, and now lives in Seattle, WA. A recent promotion to Senior Manager at AWS allows him to apply his experience from GWA to manage North and South America teams to deploy fiber networks to connect Data Centers.

Class of 2005 Christie Leigh Hill McHugh was promoted to Program Director

of Auburn Gymnastics Academy and works with Auburn University Gymnastics as the Volunteer Coordinator for Home Meets.

She additionally has volunteered with her sorority Gamma Phi Beta since college graduation in countless positions.

Due to her years of dedication to the chapter, they recently named their service award given to an Auburn University Panhellenic Woman in honor of her. This award is presented to a Panhellenic woman who embodies a strong work ethic who does so with the utmost good in their heart.

Class of 2006 Andrew Gross has gotten out of the restaurant business and now manages a gym in Athens, Ga. He has been married for 7 years, recently bought a house in Athens and has a black lab named Preacher.

Stephanie Little Malcom welcomed her third child, Lucy Ruth Malcom, in 2022.

Katy Poole has started a business coaching women through eggfreezing but also with fertility issues on how to improve their fertility. She is a nurse practitioner and uses evidence-based practice and her nursing experience to help women have families on their timeline.

Class of 2007 Sarah Walker Richardson joined the team at the Georgia Tech Athletic Association in March

2023 as the Associate Director - Development Stewardship. She is excited to be back at her alma mater.

Class of 2008 Kylee Knop Vargason welcomed a son on March 30th, 2022, and began a new position as an Elementary School Counselor in the Cedar Rapids Community School District in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In her debut collegiate season, UCLA softball player Taylor Tinsley was named to the Pac12 All-Freshman Team, posting a 6-1 record with a 1.47 earned run average over 57.1 innings. She pitched three completegame shutouts and totaled 48 strikeouts in her 13 starts and seven relief appearances. She pitched a no-hitter in an 8-0 victory over CSU Bakersfield in her first career start at UCLA with four strikeouts, the only blemish being a fifth-inning catcher’s interference. She joined Amanda Freed as the only players in UCLA history to throw a no-hitter in their pitching debut. Her performance marked the 115th no-hitter in UCLA history.

Taylor Grossman is one of two feature twirlers (“Golden Girls”) at Georgia Tech. She traveled to London this summer to compete as a part of Team USA in the International Baton Twirling Federation World Championship in Liverpool, England where she and her team, Forte, placed 5th in the world out of the 21 countries represented.

PATRICK BAYNES

Patrick Baynes Class of 2003 A self-described square peg in a world of round holes, class of 2003 alum Patrick Baynes was at George Walton Academy when he started to realize that he didn’t think quite like everyone else in his class.

Now CEO of PeopleLinx (formally Nerdwise), Patrick is an “award winning entrepreneur and marketing executive” who “leads vision, execution, and customer relationships” for his company.

Nerdwise recently rebranded as PeopleLinx, a business that offers data, marketing, sales and agency solutions. Helping to transform marketing as we know it, PeopleLinx seeks out leads for companies and serves as an all-in-one solution to help grow business.

Patrick enjoyed his time at GWA, but he admittedly spent a lot of his time with Mr. Whitley and Mr. Nicholson as he pushed the boundaries. He credits his teachers and administrators for driving his creative energy to a more productive space.

Attending Alfred University in New York, Patrick majored in business. Facebook came out his freshman year in college and YouTube shortly thereafter.

There was a lot of success in the internet industry at that time.

Impressed by the prospect of being able to be yourself and work how you wanted to, Patrick followed his values as they led him to apply for a job at Linkedin.

“I was lucky to get in early into that industry,” Patrick recalls. He was only the 162nd employee hired at Linkedin, a company that has over 21,000 employees as of December, 2022.

for customers. It was growing quickly and he moved to training the customer service team and building out the internal training for all of their different solutions so they could keep hiring and bringing people up to speed.

“They were hiring really great candidates from Google and all these other great companies, but I wasn’t getting the growth opportunities I really wanted at Linkedin.” He moved on and started a company with a coworker from Linkedin.

Through multiple entrepreneurial endeavors, Patrick helped tweak the products he and his teams were working on as they made adjustments to what they offered and who their market was.

PeopleLink was actually one of his first companies and it sold in 2017. His company, Nerdwise, really leaned into finding prospect leads and helping companies grow their businesses.

In July of this year, Nerdwise rebranded and went back to the PeopleLinx name.

A lesson learned from Linkedin, Patrick said you have to “commit to a problem and start to solve it and build and improve your product as you go.”

At 28 he was named one of Linkedin’s top 40 under 40 for his visionary thinking as an entrepreneur.

Now living in both Puerto Rico and Philadelphia, he says that he’s happy.

VICTORIA CUSTER Victoria Custer Class of 2011 She may have been ‘the weird goth kid” during her time at GWA, but you can now call her doctor. Dr. Victoria Custer is a practicing full spectrum OB/GYN now, meaning she delivers babies, performs c-sections, and other surgeries related to women’s health. She takes care of women and their reproductive health all the way from little kids and teenagers through women going through menopause.

After graduating from George Walton Academy, Victoria Custer went on to Oxford College then to Emory to earn her bachelor of science in chemistry.

Realizing that working in a lab wasn’t quite what she bargained for, she took the suggestion to look into medical school and found her calling. “I really liked chemistry and math,” said Victoria,

“but I hated being in the lab; I craved human interaction. I wondered how I could use science but still talk to people.

Medical school turned out to be a great fit.” After completing her doctorate at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, she went on to do her medical residency in Phoenix, Arizona as an OB/GYN. She moved over the summer to join an OB/ GYN practice in Rome, Georgia.

Starting GWA in second grade, Victoria has really learned to appreciate her education. “I always rave about George Walton. It was a very well-rounded education. I’m impressed by the breadth of knowledge that I received at GWA. I was so prepared for college and I don’t think I could have been as successful as I am without the foundation I got there.

We had a great arts program and a great science program and I was able to do all of that while I was there.”

Victoria recalled her time in Coach Harcourt’s class fondly. “Science was kind of funny. I loved AP Chemistry so much, but when I got to college, it turned out not to be blowing stuff up at all.”

She still keeps in touch with her English teacher Mrs. Taylor and credits her for sparking her love of poetry and literature, as she reads about 50 books a year. “Mrs. Taylor had me read some of the most beautiful things,” Victoria said.

Victoria addressed her ability to speak in front of people. “I did a lot of drama.

I did not miss a play or musical for my entire four years in high school and I kept doing that in college, which was fun. I was also President of Gavel Club.

That has been the best thing I ever did because public speaking is so important and I still put on my resume that I was a Toastmaster. People really like that.”

After living in Phoenix for four years, Victoria is looking forward to coming back to Georgia. She reflected on Monroe’s influence in her most recent life decisions. “I fell in love with being in a small town and being part of a community. I think I’m seeking that again by going back to Rome to work.”
