“The folks at the MBA Career Center were part career gurus, part personal coaches, and part negotiation ninjas. Navigating a new career path can make one question everything, but they helped me find my true north. And Professor Jeff Reid’s deep ties to the venture capital and entrepreneurship community directly influenced by internship and post-MBA employment. I wasn’t expecting a robust startup culture at Georgetown, yet that is exactly what I found. From the Venture Fellows Program to guest lectures by legends like Peter Thiel, I was blown away by the entrepreneurial opportunities.”

“In order to break into Wall Street, you must utilize your professional network. Georgetown has an outstanding alumni network in the financial services industry. In my search, I relied exclusively on this network and MBA Career Center job postings. I met numerous alumni and built relationships that led to a new career.”

“Coming from a pre-MBA career of academic biology research, I expected to be one of the few students without significant prior business experience. Many of my classmates also came from non-traditional backgrounds, from teaching to the military, Peace Corps, medical school, and publishing. This diversity of experiences, coupled with a strong international presence, enhanced discussions inside and outside of the classroom.”

“I was impressed by the true spirit of collaboration among students. I assumed business school was a competitive environment. However, my classmates prepared for the same interview together and gladly introduced one another to their professional contacts. I transitioned from being an entrepreneur in India to becoming a marketer at a large consumer goods company in the United States. From the start, the MBA Career Center focused my efforts on networking and job search. It was because of the Career Center that I attended the conference where I got my internship offer.”

“Dean Prashant Malaviya’s class sparked my interest in marketing, and he took time to talk with me about possible career paths and how he also made the switch from engineering to marketing. The MBA Career Center was a huge asset. Advisors helped me figure out how to position my skills and experience for marketing, and they helped me realize that brand management was the career path for me because it’s an ideal balance of my creative and analytical skills, offers a variety of challenging assignments, and offers a path to general management.”

“As an international student, the international community was a big factor that led me to Georgetown. Together we learned how to handle unfamiliar aspects of the job search such as long recruiting processes, complicated interview formats, and the importance of networking. My career coach helped me develop a job search plan and guided me to explore my own professional network, which ultimately landed me my first interview at Google.”

“In my first year, I completed consulting projects with two D.C. tech startups through the InSITE Fellows Program, launched two companies with classmates through StartUp Weekend and Startup Factory, and pitched for investment in front of local venture capitalists through the Venture Capital Investment and Rocket Pitch Competitions. McDonough promotes opportunities beyond its walls to help students gain skills and connections that are beneficial in the career search process and career advancement. I was able to recruit with Amazon and land my internship because the Career Center built a relationship with the company and brought them to campus.”

“The business skills I learned during my first year at Georgetown enabled me to succeed during the internship application process. The rigorous coursework in core skills such as strategy, finance, and accounting quickly leveled the playing field and helped me successfully compete with other MBAs for my National Park Service internship. The career coaches were instrumental in helping me translate my past military experiences to be relevant in corporate America. I vividly remember preparing with my career coach the day before my interview; it was that extra preparation that gave me the competitive edge to succeed the following day.”

“The people I have met here and the personal relationships I have built are the greatest assets of the MBA Program. At Georgetown, there is an incredibly supportive environment and a unique openness and awareness of cultural diversity. This combination makes the McDonough School of Business a place where every student feels empowered to do his best and where no dream is unreachable.”
