A MESSAGE

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF ADVISORS

DEAR COLLEAGUES, It’s hard to believe it has been nearly a year since we last gathered in person on the Hilltop, yet the world has changed so dramatically during that time. As we all have adjusted to the disruption caused by COVID-19, I am proud of the unwavering support each of you has shown toward Georgetown and the McDonough School of Business. Several board members volunteered their time to serve as judges for the Pivot Program’s recent Pitch Competition, providing insight and advice to a promising group of returning citizens as they begin life-changing work for themselves and their families. Many of you also answered the call for the 90 Days with Georgetown campaign, making a difference in the university’s ability to support the health, safety, and financial needs of students during the pandemic. During our September virtual Leadership Meeting, we will hear more from Dean Paul Almeida about the state of the school, as well as focus on the progress made on several strategic initiatives. At our November meeting, we will receive updates on the Undergraduate and MBA programs from Dean Patricia Grant and Dean Prashant Malaviya and build on our discussion around McDonough’s centers and initiatives. Thank you for taking the time to join us for this important discussion. I look forward to seeing everyone — even if it’s just virtually — very soon. Sincerely,

Robert H. Steers (B’75, P’06, P’08, P’10) Chair Board of Advisors

AGENDA

2020 FALL LEADERSHIP MEETING

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2020 12:00-12:50 P.M.

WELCOME MESSAGE AND UPDATES FROM THE UNIVERSITY AND SCHOOL Board of Advisors Chair Robert H. Steers will open the meeting with introductory remarks. Provost Robert Groves will then provide an update on how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the university’s academics, operations, and finances before taking questions from the group. Next, Dean Paul Almeida and Vice Dean Dennis Quinn will share an update from the McDonough School of Business focused on both the current situation resulting from the pandemic and the longterm strategic initiatives of the school. They also will conclude with a Q&A session.

12:50-1:25 P.M.

BEYOND COVID: BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Professor Pietra Rivoli and Robert Flanagan (BoA Executive Committee member) will discuss one of the school’s most impactful racial justice initiatives — the Pivot Program. Now entering its third year, the Pivot Program provides formerly incarcerated individuals from the District of Columbia an education rooted in entrepreneurship and business, as well as access to employment opportunities and other resources to put them on the path to success. The program is a partnership with Georgetown’s Prisons and Justice Initiative and the D.C. government. Afterward, Professors Brad Jensen, Jason Schloetzer, and Vishal Agrawal will lead a discussion on the school’s progress in three strategic areas: business and global affairs; technology and the future of work; and the business of sustainability.

1:25-1:30 P.M.

CLOSING REMARKS Board of Advisors Vice Chairs Ann Sarnoff and Michael Psaros will deliver closing remarks.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

DEAR BOARD OF ADVISORS AND PARENTS ADVISORY COUNCIL MEMBERS, When I first outlined my plans for creating an innovative and nimble culture at Georgetown McDonough, I knew it would prepare us for challenges to the future of higher education and business — I just didn’t predict we would be put to the test so soon. Yet, here we are amid a global pandemic, an unstable economy, and a growing movement toward racial justice. While many institutions and businesses may be struggling to keep up, I am optimistic about our future at Georgetown McDonough. By creating an organization ready to adapt to dramatic changes in our industry and in the world, we are better positioned for success. With this outlook, I am pleased that we continue on several strategic initiatives that look to areas of increasing importance in the business world. We will be joined by Professors Brad Jensen, Jason Schloetzer, and Vishal Agrawal to share updates on their work in the areas of business and global affairs; technology and the future of work; and the business of sustainability. We hope you can share your suggestions for how Georgetown McDonough can continue to advance this important work. We also will be joined by Professor Pietra Rivoli and board colleague Robert Flanagan, who will discuss the tremendous progress of our Pivot Program for formerly incarcerated D.C. residents. Now entering its third year, this program has shown how we can use our expertise in business to be a force for good in our community and help shape the narrative around hiring individuals who are now being judged by their future potential instead of by their biggest mistake. The Pivot Program is one of several initiatives at the business school that seek to right the racial injustice in the world. Our community also has engaged in town hall events this summer and will be forming task forces this fall to further explore how we can strengthen our community around diversity and inclusion for the long-term. I am grateful to you for your willingness to engage with us around these important topics even as I know you have many responsibilities in your professional and personal lives that are only heightened by all that is going on in the world. And, I know that our efforts will help us make a difference in the world.

Sincerely,

Paul Almeida Dean and William R. Berkley Chair Professor of Strategy

SCHOOL UPDATE COVID-19 RESPONSE Dean Almeida has been in touch with the Georgetown McDonough community regularly throughout the pandemic. Read his messages on the COVID-19 page. The school also quickly assembled a Coronavirus Task Force, led by Chris Kormis, associate dean, chief marketing officer, and senior advisor to the dean. The Dean’s Office has held regular town hall meetings with both faculty and staff on topics ranging from preparing to teach remotely to school operations to maintaining the school’s sense of community. The Vice Dean’s Office also assembled the Online Pedagogy Team, led by Lee Pinkowitz, associate professor of finance. This group spent the summer working with faculty to design their fall courses for a virtual environment. Several students and alumni gained attention for their efforts to solve pressing issues during the pandemic: • Three Georgetown University students, Cooper Adams (B’21), Elisabeth O’Brien (C’20), and Peter DiGiovanni (C’21), helped create the FarmLink Project, which connects farmers with food surpluses to food banks facing shortages, bridging the gap between food insecurity and food waste. • Liam Marshall (B’23) started his own business selling “Thank You” signs in his home state of New Jersey to raise funds for medical workers on the frontlines of the pandemic. 10 | 2020 FA L L L E A D E R S H I P M E E T I N G

Three Georgetown University students, Cooper Adams (B’21), Elisabeth O’Brien (C’20), and Peter DiGiovanni (C’21), are joining the fight to help bridge the gap between food insecurity and food waste through the FarmLink Project.

• Adrian Hertel (B’20) developed a code that helped those with auto-immune disorders schedule grocery pickup slots at a time when the demand was outpacing the supply. • MBA students turned a planned volunteer opportunity at the Capital Area Food Bank into a virtual fundraiser that provided meals to those in need. • Jing Zhao (MBA’18) donated 3,000 face masks from China to Georgetown University. McDonough ensured their delivery to Georgetown’s Dr. Vince Winklerprins. The Georgetown McDonough community continued to find ways to connect in the virtual environment: • The annual MBA McDonough Cup, a month-long class competition, became McDonough Month, during which students engaged virtually on the themes of wellness, creativity, and broader community as they found ways to stay engaged in a close-knit program. • The Undergraduate Class of 2020 filmed a “Dear Class of 2024” video for the incoming students, welcoming them to Georgetown. • The Alumni Relations team worked with alumni from across Georgetown McDonough, including the board’s Karim El-Solh (MBA’89), to create a video welcoming the Class of 2020 to the alumni community.

SCHOOL UPDATE LEVERAGING OUR WASHINGTON, D.C., LOCATION A redesigned Executive MBA curriculum launched this fall adds greater flexibility in choosing electives and a sharper focus on what it means to learn in the heart of the nation’s capital. New courses include the Structure of Global Industries Residency, where students study international trade and investment, trade policy, economic growth, and monetary and fiscal policy, and Strategic Advocacy for Business, which explores how business intersects with the policy and government institutions and communities in the District of Columbia. As the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning to take hold in Asia in early 2020, the MBA program created an alternative Global Business Experience Vietnam residency in Washington, D.C., for students who were unable to travel or who were uncomfortable with the developing health situation at that time. It included site visits to various D.C. organizations, discussions with experts on the Vietnam economy and management and marketing practices in Vietnam, and visits to cultural attractions of Vietnam and Vietnamese cuisine.

REFLECTING OUR GEORGETOWN EXPERTISE AND IDENTIT Y The McDonough School of Business and the Walsh School of Foreign Service launched the Bachelor of Science in Business and Global Affairs program to prepare graduates to make meaningful contributions involving pressing global issues within business, government, and society. Georgetown Entrepreneurship has launched a podcast, Venture Forward, to tell the stories of Georgetown University student and alumni entrepreneurs.

GUIDED BY OUR JESUIT VALUES The A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation has invested more than $12 million in Georgetown McDonough to support undergraduate financial aid and global real estate education, and to partner with District of Columbia Public Schools and Public Charter Schools in providing leadership education. Georgetown McDonough’s accrediting agency, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, recognized the Pivot Program as one of 25 innovations that inspire change in the business school education landscape. This fall, the school will launch Georgetown Reach, an innovative new program for rising 8th-grade students and their parents from underrepresented minority groups that prepares them to attend a top-tier college like Georgetown.

Georgetown McDonough developed a new certificate in Discerning Leadership for the General Curia of the Society of Jesus, in partnership with Le Moyne College and Esade Business & Law School. This new program educates senior-level Church leaders in the combined disciplines of management education and Ignatian principles. The 2019 Georgetown McDonough Service Leadership Awards honored Leah Evert (MBA’19) for developing a foundation that supports cancer research, Jerome Smalls (B’19) for starting a social venture that empowers minority youth from lowincome backgrounds, and Kerry Pace, associate dean of MBA programs, for promoting wellness and inclusion in the MBA student body. The awards are supported by a fund created by Timothy P. Tassopoulos (MBA’83).

INNOVATION Georgetown McDonough launched recruitment for its new technologyenhanced M.S. in Business Analytics (MSBA), which will begin in January 2021. The mostly online program prepares students to become leaders who understand and use data to create, share, and sustain value. McDonough launched an MBA Certificate in Sustainable Business to prepare graduates to address urgent environmental and societal challenges that affect companies’ operations and business models.

SCHOOL UPDATE The Full-time and Flex MBA programs now offer a STEM-designated management science major to ensure students are prepared to lead in an era of rapidly evolving business practices. This new offering provides numerous benefits to students, including better preparing them for jobs within the technology sector, as well as technologyfocused jobs within all other industries and sectors. The MBA program now opens with an intensive course introduced last year that focuses on Leading Teams for Performance and Impact. During the week-long course that launches the school’s leadership curriculum, students explore the dynamics of diversity and inclusion, implicit biases, conflict and civility, and giving and receiving feedback. New undergraduate and MBA electives for the 2020-2021 academic year were carefully designed to reflect the cultural, social, and racial issues happening globally and in the United States. Students will have the opportunity to think more critically about diversity and inclusion, business, leadership, and communication. Students enrolling in the Flex MBA program this fall will be able to complete the degree more quickly, now in as little as 26 months. By transitioning some core courses to electives or some semesterlong courses to seven-week courses, students can either complete the degree at an accelerated pace or have more flexibility to craft a schedule that better aligns with their work-life goals.

12 | 2020 FA L L L E A D E R S H I P M E E T I N G

To provide valuable professional development opportunities to students whose summer internships were rescinded, delayed, or postponed, the Undergraduate Program created a series of co-labs, where corporate partners, alumni, and professors provided non-credit opportunities for students to explore topics such as diversity and inclusion or business analytics.

FACULT Y ACCOMPLISHMENTS Over the summer, two long-serving members of the faculty celebrated their retirement. DAVID WALKER, John A. Largay Professor, and MICHAEL CZINKOTA, associate professor of international business, both began teaching at Georgetown McDonough in 1980. During his tenure, Walker founded the school’s Capital Markets Research Center (an antecedent of the Center for Financial Markets and Policy), and was pivotal in the launch of the MBA program in his role as dean of graduate programs and chair of the committee that led to the school’s accreditation. In addition to teaching, Czinkota held several important senior administrative positions for the U.S. government during the presidencies of Reagan and Bush, including in the Bureau of Export Administration and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce. He also was a pioneer in the field of international marketing. VISHAL AGRAWAL, Provost’s Distinguished Lapeyre Family Associate Professor, and ŞAFAK

YÜCEL, assistant professor, won second place for the Best Working Paper Award of The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences Section on Technology, Innovation Management, and Entrepreneurship for “Non-Ownership Business Models for Solar Energy” (with Beril Toktay). Agrawal also received the 2019 Management Science Meritorious Service Award and was appointed as a department editor for the sustainable operations department of the Production and Operations Management journal. JENNIE BAI, and FERDINANDO MONTE have been appointed faculty research fellows by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Bai, associate professor of finance, was recognized for her research in debt pricing and joined the Asset Pricing Program. Monte, assistant professor of strategy and economics, was recognized for his research in how the mobility of people, goods, and information shape how individuals, businesses, and economies interact at a local and global scale. TURAN BALI, Robert S. Parker Chair of Business Administration, was invited to serve as chair of the asset pricing session at the American Finance Association meeting in January 2021.

McDonough’s Venture Fellows Program, which provides students interested in working in venture capital with a yearlong appointment at a local VC firm, now includes undergraduate students. Full-time MBA graduates once again secured record salary numbers — seeing a 6% increase from last year’s average starting salary to $124,119. According to the 2019 Employment Report, the most sought after industries included consulting (35%), financial services (27%), technology (14%), and real estate (7%).
