Dr. Thomas Cooper receives the 2014 Curry Award for Faculty Excellence from Provost Dr. Rosemary Allen (Photo: Paul Atkinson, Rockledge Photography) Dr. Thomas Cooper is recipient of Georgetown College’s 2014 Curry Award for Faculty Excellence. It was presented Tuesday, January 21, at the annual Founders Day Convocation officially opening the spring academic term.

In remarks before students, faculty and staff, Dr. Rosemary Allen, Provost and Academic Dean, cited Dr. Cooper’s “quiet competence” and “extraordinary capacity to think carefully about academic matters as he serves in high stakes positions” on campus.. “He’s identified as someone with uncommon common sense,” she said. “One who sees through the muck and asks the clarifying question.”

As a teacher, Dr. Allen said this year’s Curry Award recipient is described as “challenging, influential and interesting,” someone who empowers students to take charge of their own learning, and who teaches how to think, not what to think.

Dr. Cooper is Georgetown’s James Graham Brown Professor and Chair, Department of Business Administration and Economics. He has provided leadership for his department for 15 years.

The Curry Award, one of three significant faculty awards given annually, is named in honor of Drs. Ralph and Gwen Curry, two long-time leaders of the Georgetown faculty and former chairs of the English department. It is intended to recognize three elements of faculty life that were important to the Currys: service to faculty, excellence in scholarship, and dedication to students.

Financial Executives International Dr. Zahi Haddad

Sean Fightmaster was the recipient of the student award [FEI Scholar] from the Financial Executives International for the year 2013-14. FEI is a preeminent professional association representing 14,000 senior financial executives from over 8,000 corporations throughout the United States and Canada. Other recipients from recent years were Rachel Renee Penn, Robert Gilven, Anita Smith, and Carson Keally.

Georgetown College students have won the FEI Scholar award every year since 1992. Dr. Haddad served as a president and is currently a board member.

The BUA Faculty Serving the Professions Dr. Tom Cooper

When Dr. Dwaine Greene became president of Georgetown College, he initiated a process of strategic renewal for the college. The heart of this plan is to direct more attention and resources to strong, growing programs. By shifting its focus in this manner, Georgetown can better serve the many students who have chosen those popular programs, and we can more effectively appeal to prospective students who are interested in them. The Business Administration and Economics Department is playing a prominent role in the college’s strategic renewal.

KyCPA Accounting Interview Day

Our efforts have focused on the Business Administration major. In the previous version, students completed a general business course of study with an emphasis in one area (finance, management, or marketing). Now we have turned each emphasis into a separate stand-alone major.

Our new Finance, Management, and Marketing majors still have a broad business foundation, but they include more coursework in the major discipline for a greater degree of specialization. We think these new programs will satisfy student demand for more specialized majors without sacrificing the flexibility that a broad foundation provides. While we are changing course requirements and expanding some majors, other aspects of our program remain constant. We will continue to maintain the personal approach to education that makes Georgetown special: challenging students to excel and providing the support to help them succeed.

KyCPA Accounting Interview Day was held on Tuesday, September 23, on Georgetown’s beautiful campus. Sponsored by KyCPA and Georgetown College, this annual recruiting event provides accounting students from smaller colleges and universities an opportunity to interview in one central location with recruiters from several different firms. CPA firm recruiters, representing nine local, regional and national firms, interviewed 34 students from 11 schools. Based on results from the survey completed by recruiters attending this year, 100% feel that this event benefits their firm.

Participating firms indicate that many students have been hired over the years as a result of Accounting Interview Day. The firms participating this year were: BKD LLP, Blue & Co. LLC, Crowe Horwath LLP, Dean Dorton PLLC, Ernst & Young LLP, Louis T. Roth & Company PLLC, Mountjoy Chilton Medley LLP, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and Ray Foley Hensley & Company PLLC.

As strategic renewal continues, there may be more aspects involving the Business program. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on any further developments when they are finalized.

Phi Beta Lambda Comes Home for SLC Dr. Scott Takacs

For the first time ever, the Kentucky Phi Beta (PBL) Spring Leadership Conference (SLC) was held at Georgetown College. This was a chance to showcase many characteristics of campus, including Hill Chapel. Dr. Lumpkin’s presentation on personal finance was extremely informative, and many attendees spoke very highly of it after the conference. Our Chapter President, Joseph Lane, did a great job, as did the state officers.

Our students competed in a number of events and won in the following categories: Haley Lepper and Michael Porter—First Place in Human Resources.

Joseph Lane—Second Place in Job Interview Joseph Lane—Second Place in Impromptu Speaking In June, students went onward to the National Leadership Conference (NLC) in Nashville, Tennessee. In keeping with long tradition, Georgetown College did not come back empty -handed. Lihn Vuong won Second Place in Financial Analysis & Decision-Making, and Ninth Place in Financial Concepts. Haley Lepper and Michael Porter won Fifth Place in Human Resources. Despite the distractions and hospitality of Nashville, the students were very responsible and very effective ambassadors of Georgetown College. They repeatedly expressed gratitude for the support that they have received from alumni and friends.

The Georgetown College Investment Team Advisor: Dr. Nancy Lumpkin

During fall 2013, I took my second sabbatical (Yes, I have now been at Georgetown for 15 years!). While I continued to administer the portfolio during this time (much like summers), a new team for 2014 was not chosen until the Spring semester. This article is about their first semester as a team.

The Investment Team portfolio for 2014 climbed from $269,959 on January 1st to approximately $277,656 on September 30th, 2014. Stock performance for the year has been strong, if a bit volatile, and the biggest challenge for the team was learning how to choose good companies while maintaining some diversification across sectors. In the first term of the team’s tenure, they were basically deciding what to sell or keep from the previous team’s portfolio. The team has done very well with companies like Disney (earning 64.59%), HCI Group (Insurance, earning 74.15 %), and Polaris Industries (earning 58.96%). There has been some turbulence in the market recently, and today, the portfolio’s value stands at $262,705.

The department has chosen new, additional members that will join the team in November. The Investment Team welcomes Jessica Claxton and Max Zimmer to its ranks.

Our speakers, some of whom are Georgetown College graduates, are business leaders from a wide variety of industries.
