THE GEORGETOWN LOMBARDI DIFFERENCE Advancing breast cancer research. Transforming care. Changing lives. For more than three decades, the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center has brought together leading physicians and scientists with a shared goal: To prevent, detect, and ultimately cure breast cancer. Through innovative research and compassionate, patient-centered care, Georgetown Lombardi is advancing discoveries that improve outcomes for women everywhere. Founded in 1989 by fashion designer Ralph Lauren and the late Washington Post Company president Katharine Graham, the Nina Hyde Center was established in honor of Nina Hyde, the beloved former fashion editor of The Washington Post. Today, her legacy continues through a community dedicated to making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

The Davis-McDuffie Innovation in Breast Cancer Award Inspired by Janet Davis Brooks and Barbara McDuffie, this Innovation in Breast Cancer Award has one goal: To identify and support future research leaders who will keep breast cancer research vibrant with new ideas.

Congratulations Ayesha Shajahan-Haq, Ph.D., 2026 recipient of the Davis-McDuffie Innovation in Breast Cancer Award! Dr. Ayesha Shajahan-Haq is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Oncology at Georgetown University and a member of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. She earned her Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2004 and completed post-doctoral training in breast cancer research at Georgetown University Medical Center. Shajahan-Haq’s research focuses on overcoming clinical drug resistance in breast cancer, with a particular emphasis on estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtypes. Her work aims to identify novel therapeutic targets that inhibit tumor growth while sparing healthy tissue. Her innovative research has garnered support from major organizations such as NIH/NCI, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and METAvivor. A central pillar of Shajahan-Haq’s career is the integration of patient advocacy into scientific research. In 2011, she co-founded the Georgetown Breast Cancer Advocates (GBCA) and continues to serve as the group’s scientific advisor, fostering vital partnerships between clinicians, researchers, and those affected by the disease.

2026 EVENT SPEAKERS EUN YANG, MODERATOR Eun Yang anchors News4 at 4 and News4 at 6, the #1 rated evening newscast in the Washington Metropolitan Area, for NBC4. Yang has covered big stories including the inaugurations of presidents, visits by two popes, Opening Day at Nationals Park, and the Olympics in South Korea and Tokyo. Yang spent more than 10 years anchoring News4 Today, for which she won several Emmy Awards. In addition to her role as a news anchor, Yang files compelling community stories about people and organizations important to the DC area. She anchored the station’s “Inequality in America: Tackling the Rise in Anti-Asian Hate” special, for which she won an Emmy and a regional Edward R. Murrow Award. She also won an Emmy for hosting a local restaurant show called Foodies: DC. Born in Seoul, Korea, Yang moved to the Washington Metropolitan Area before she was three. She grew up in Prince George’s County and Montgomery County and graduated with a journalism degree from the University of Maryland. JESSICA MILLER, 2026 SPIRIT OF LIFE AWARDEE Nearly one year after a stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis changed her life overnight, Jessica Miller is moving forward with gratitude, purpose, and an unwavering belief in what research and the people behind it can make possible. This September marked two years since Miller launched Rock Spring Real Estate Solutions, a woman-owned commercial real estate advisory firm grounded in transparent, client-first guidance. In 2025, she was also working to launch REAiL, an artificial intelligence company. Then cancer made the future she had been building suddenly very uncertain. “It was this event and my community of commercial real estate women that I reached out to after my diagnosis that led me to Georgetown Lombardi. The courage of the women who received this award before me and the committee of Lombardi Women supporters was there for me when I really needed them.”

The Spirit of Life Award is presented to exceptional individuals who have navigated the challenges of breast cancer, raise awareness in their communities, and provide hope and support to those touched by this disease. Their bravery to share their story makes a difference for breast cancer research at Georgetown Lombardi. We are so grateful to Jessica Miller for sharing her story with us and for reminding us that even when cancer changes the path, it can amplify purpose as you continue the journey.
