Since Georgetown’s founding in 1789, we have understood our responsibility to help meet the world’s most profound needs.

A LONG HISTORY OF ANSWERING THE CALL Photo circa 1930

1956 | The start of the Georgetown Summer School (now, School of Continuing Studies), formalizing year-round education after wartime had dramatically disrupted academic schedules.

1789 | The establishment of Georgetown College (now the Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences) to mold citizens who would play a role in shaping the young Republic.

1851 | The inception of a School of Medicine to serve Washington, D.C., soon providing a major training center for surgeons of the Union armies.

1968 | The launch of the Community Scholars Program in the wake of the civil rights movement.

1969 | The historic hiring of a full-time rabbi in 1969, imam in 1999, and Hindu priest in 2016, developing the nation’s largest and most diverse campus ministry program.

1870 | The university’s first officially recorded intercollegiate athletics competition, setting the stage for Georgetown Athletics to play an integral role in promoting formation and excellence.

1919 | The establishment of the Walsh School of Foreign Service in the wake of WWI.

1936 | The seed of the McDonough School of Business—a program within the School of Foreign Service—as D.C. was emerging as a center of commerce.

1978 | The transformative commitment to meet financial need as that obstacle increasingly limited educational access.

2013 | The inauguration of the McCourt School of Public Policy in a globalizing world.

2022 | The re-envisioning of Georgetown’s School of Nursing and School of Health to match the university’s expanding leadership in medicine, nursing, and the many dimensions of human health.

That calling propels us to this day— and into the future.

Home to the Georgetown Law Center for decades, our growing campus at the heart of Washington, D.C., offers exceptional opportunities to work, learn, and serve in a city that shapes the world.

Georgetown has made significant investments downtown in recent years through acquisition and new construction, including the landmark academic building underway at 125 E St. NW. But this goes beyond buildings: it’s about the programs, interactions, and experiences those spaces make possible.

This is a defining moment for our planet, and for the university’s environment and sustainability ambitions as we set out to accelerate education, research, and action.

Led by the Earth Commons Institute in partnership with Georgetown’s Office of Sustainability, the university is preparing young leaders across all fields to be stewards of a healthier planet. We are developing scalable strategies to green the university and communities worldwide—and to drive the rapid change our planet needs.

Global Health Promoting health and positive change through collaboration

Racial Justice Understanding and addressing the legacies of slavery and discrimination

Seeking to improve health outcomes for all—and especially under-resourced communities—Georgetown is educating a new generation of global health experts and pursuing discoveries that further human well-being.

Decision makers from all sorts of disciplines need the knowledge and tools to address complex threats to health and health security—from disease, to climate change, migration, and more. A new university-wide Georgetown Global Health Institute will convene perspectives from science, health, medicine, policy, law, economics, ethics, and the humanities to better understand urgent health challenges, find actionable solutions, and amplify these advances far and wide.

As a Catholic and Jesuit university, Georgetown has a crucial role to play in expanding knowledge about race, history, and how they shape our society today. Our whole campus community contributes to this work, seeking to advance the well-being of Black, Indigenous, and people of color—and preparing students to create a more equitable world.

We do so by supporting student access and formation, faculty inquiry and innovation, and deep community engagement. A new Racial Justice Institute will serve as a unifying force as we confront educational and health disparities; the impacts of mass incarceration; and much more.

Students, faculty, and partners across our entire Georgetown community have been advancing elements of this work for decades. We are called to build on this momentum, to engage more fully and strategically than ever.
