Head of School Nancy Starmer will retire at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year. As our eighth head of school, Nancy has led the school with exceptional vision, integrity, and deep commitment to our mission and Quaker values.

Dear Friends, As I move into my last year at George School I am more grateful than ever for the privilege of serving as head of this wonderful school. Much of what makes it so wonderful can be credited to all of you.

In my opening remarks to our new students each year I remind them that though they may not yet know each other, already they share many common qualities. Foremost among these is the fact that they are the beneficiaries of the care, support, and contributions of a broad and deep community of people.

Those people include their own parents, of course, who recognize the importance of their children’s education and have invested not only funds for tuition but their time and energy in the admission process, their hopes for their children’s futures, their engagement with us on this journey, and their faith that their children will flourish and prosper at George School.

Our students are also the beneficiaries of the care and commitment of many others, and I remind them of this as well. George School’s beautiful campus and all of our facilities—from Main to the Meetinghouse to the beautiful new Fitness and Athletics Center to our science labs and art studios and performance spaces—are the result of contributions from thousands of graduates, parents and friends over the past 123 years, all of whom wanted George School students to be surrounded by beauty and to have excellent facilities in which to work and learn.

The racial, cultural, religious, socioeconomic, and geographic diversity of our population is the result of a decades-long investment on the part of George School students, teachers, leaders, and graduates who care about creating a more peaceful, respectful, and understanding world. Some of those people, like our graduate Julian Bond, Class of 1957—about whom scores of tributes have been written since his death— have invested their entire careers in this work.

Julian returned several times to speak with George School students, most recently in 2011, as have many other distinguished graduates and parents. Many of our assemblies as well as special programs in science, the arts, service, and athletics are the result of commitments made by members of our extended community as well. And the scholarships that so many of you support, that allow so many of our students to attend, and that provide us with the extraordinary socioeconomic diversity that this school enjoys, are gifts that our students now share because of you.

Leaving this extraordinary community is made easier by the certainty that our current students, like all of you, will pay these gifts forward long into the future. Thank you for paying your George School experience forward.

From suitable salaries for phenomenal teachers and support for expanding our curriculum to financial aid and four-square balls, all that goes into providing a high-quality, transformative George School education is expensive. Tuition simply does not cover it all.

A significant portion of the operating budget—more than 16 percent—is covered by donations to the Annual Fund, gifts for capital projects, and income from gifts to the endowment funds. These contributions make a huge impact on our community, the quality of instruction and program, and the school’s continued vitality.

The Annual Fund is exactly that: an annual fund that augments tuition revenue and helps support all that goes into providing an exceptional George School education.

When the George School robotics team travels to a competition or the theater students perform on stage, the Annual Fund is in the wings.

Beyond specific items and experiences, however, one of the greatest “gifts” of healthy annual giving is flexibility. The Annual Fund can support new initiatives and provide a culture of opportunity. Gifts to the Annual Fund in 2014-2015 were more than $1.2 million. Leadership gifts represented 70 percent of annual fund giving.

Like its neighbor Mollie Dodd Anderson Library, the new facility was built with the capability and flexibility to support our evolving programming needs for the next 123 years.

Endowment Gifts Support Core Commitments

While annual giving is for today, the endowment is for tomorrow. It provides both a continuing stream of annual revenue, drawn from investment income, and a safeguard against lean times. The endowment provides the financial support to allow George School to be entrepreneurial.

The endowment—including endowed funds for specific purposes—supports the school’s highest priorities including:

• Curricular innovation • Financial aid • Faculty and staff compensation • Professional enrichment • Environmental sustainability • Unrestricted endowment funds

This year, our active, socially conscious student body rallied together to encourage the school’s trustees to take a hard look at its endowment portfolio. As a result of their efforts, George School was the first independent, secondary school to join the national movement to reduce its endowment’s investment in fossil fuel-based companies, by eliminating coal mining companies from its total portfolio.

The value of the George School endowment is $150.6 million for FY 2015. Though this is large, it is smaller than average when compared to our peer schools. The endowment per student at George School is $279,000 compared to the average endowment per student of $306,000 for peer schools.

When it comes to our endowment, George School is extremely responsible and forward-looking. We employ a financially conservative investment strategy and apply socially responsible principles consistent with our community’s values. Our endowment has attained a 10.8 percent threeyear average return.

We need to continue building the endowment to maintain and enhance the George School experience—providing necessary funds for our expansive campus and our mindexpanding curriculum, our diverse student body, and the scholars and mentors who inspire them. And we need to secure these George School hallmarks for another 123 years.

Capital Projects for a Century Old Campus

The new Fitness and Athletics Center, made possible by our most recent, very successful capital campaign, is a phenomenal space and, like the Mollie Dodd Anderson Library, befits a school of George School’s quality.

Our 123-year-old campus will always be in need of improvements. Efforts such as making windows more energyefficient and upgrading sewer lines may not grab headlines, but they are vital to the health and well-being of the community and to our sustainability programs.

Ultimately, giving is not for our beautiful buildings, but for the benefit and growth of our beautiful community.

Like the school’s mission, it is ongoing. With the support of faculty, staff, students, families, and friends, George School looks forward to guiding each new class of students as they become cheerful and committed citizen scholars. We will welcome them to open their minds and hearts, to use their education to change themselves and the world for the better, and to let their lives speak. Record IB and AP Achievement

Every one of the forty-two George School International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma candidates earned their diplomas this year, for a 100 percent success rate. Their average score was 32.4, well above the world average of 29.7. A record number of 180 students also tested in thirty-nine subject areas for a total of 488 IB exams for IB Certificates.

This year 140 students took 258 Advanced Placement (AP) exams in twenty-three different subjects, and 88 percent of their scores were three or higher. AP exams are scored on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest. College placement requires a score of three or above. Forty-one students were recognized for their outstanding AP results.

A Focus on Math

More than 145 students completed the American Mathematics Competition exam at George School. Fifteen students qualified to move onto the second round of the competition. For the first time two teams—one of four juniors and one of four sophomores—competed against more than 390 participants from seventy schools at the annual high school math competition. The sophomore team took sixth place out of twentynine teams and the junior team captured second place.

In fall 2014 the George School math team was founded.

Students competed in a weekly competition sponsored by the Math Association of America and in-ter-stel-lar.com.

The team was placed in the Division 1 title bracket and was ranked 12th out of the top sixty-four teams at the end of the competition.

New Courses Offered

The Math Department has made significant changes to the scope and sequence of their course offerings that will allow more students to take calculus sooner and to progress further mathematically during their high school years.

Freshmen who have completed a year of Honors Geometry will begin in Algebra 2 with Introduction to Analysis. This will allow them to take Precalculus, Calculus, and AB Calculus in subsequent years.

Another advanced plan will allow freshmen who have completed both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to begin with Geometry with Trigonometry. They can continue their math education with Algebra 2 with Introduction to Analysis, Precalculus, and Calculus.

A third option for students with an exceptional talent and interest in math is available for freshmen with a strong background in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. It will

Following that these students will have the opportunity to take Advanced Precalculus, AB Calculus, and BC Calculus.

In addition to these new course plans, the Science and Math Departments are adding AP Computer Science A for students who have taken Intensive Computer Programming and Robotics, or who demonstrate sufficient programming background on a placement test.

We will also add a new arts course, IB Film.

College Counseling Programs Expand

Our college counseling program expanded staffing and strategic programming. The staff taught a new college counseling term course for juniors and will add one for seniors as well next year, along with programming for sophomores.

Programs will be offered for parents to help them: • Better understand the changing landscape of college admission.

• Learn about the financial aid processes.

• Become better prepared and knowledgeable about their children’s college choices.

Waghorne Academic Study Hub Opens

Our learning support program expanded last year as more students sought help with academic subjects and study skills in response to the availability of more sophisticated evening programs. The larger, integrated Waghorne Academic Study Hub (WASH) included Math Help and Writing Centers, staffed by adults and peer tutors.

A New Student Study Hall was introduced in September to help teach and establish effective study habits among our new boarders and day students. During the day the Learning Center team worked closely with students implementing their formally developed learning support plans.

Masks Add Drama

The theater season kicked off with Oedipus the King in November 2014, continued with The Threepenny Opera in February 2015, and concluded with an adaptation of Our Town in May 2015.

Masks were the focus of the season. Originally seen in ancient Greek drama, masks were used to create a sense of excitement and, sometimes, fear as they were characteristically exaggerated. In addition to increasing the drama in a performance, the masks also allowed actors to play multiple roles.

Thought Provoking Original Choreography Featured

The annual production of Dance Eclectic showcased “Anthropocene” an original performance that reflected on climate change as well as other original works choreographed by the students in a wide variety of dance genres.

A Year of Classic and Contemporary Music

Students in the Instrumental Music program performed in January 2015 to the delight of the George School community.

The program featured classics like “Symphony Number 7”

by Beethoven and contemporary pieces such as music from Harry Potter.

Their spring concert in May also featured a variety of classical and contemporary music including the first two movements of “Capriol Suite” by Peter Warlock and “Downton Abbey—The Suite” by John Lunn arranged by Douglas Wagner.

Seventy Voices Strong

The George School Chorale in conjunction with the George School Community Chorus presented Music of the Americas in April 2015, featuring “Misa Criolla,” an Argentinian folk mass by Ariel Ramirez. Made up of nearly seventy voices the combined concert featured eight student soloists.

Three Student Films Recognized

Two films submitted to the Greenfield Youth Film Festival won “Greenies”—Tomorrow is Today and Banana-man. In addition, Mommy’s Little Boy won the coveted Spirit of the Festival award at the Bridge Film Festival.

Students Earn Scholastic Gold Keys

More than ninety works created by George School students were recognized by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Four students received Gold Keys, the highest designation, for their originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

New Fitness and Athletics Center Opens

The new George School Fitness and Athletics Center opened at the beginning of the 2014-2015 academic year. Our athletes have enjoyed conditioning and practicing in the new spaces and nearly all the teams have taken advantage of the Hayden Family Fitness Center.

Individuals who don’t consider themselves athletes in the traditional sense have also gravitated to the new facility. The multisport gymnasium has hosted a variety of instructional and recreational sports for physical education. Fitness classes were held in the Hayden Family Fitness Center, yoga in the Garrett Family Studio, and swimming in the Marshall-Platt Pool.

The building was designed with the flexibility to support the community and its growth for the next 100 years. More than 2,300 community members used the FAC this first year.

New IEA Equestrian Program Launched

The George School Equestrian Program formed an Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) team and qualified several individual riders for the Regional Finals in their first year.

As part of a nationwide network of high school equestrian programs and barns, the team aims to qualify riders for the Regional Finals, Zone Semi-Finals, and Finals, and ultimately the IEA National Finals held each spring.

Metabolic Testing Improves Training

The Athletics Department added metabolic testing to the support it offers to help athletes train for success. In addition to added strength training sessions the new testing equipment helps identify how athletes can best train to improve in their sport.

Environmental Sustainability Programs Expand

George School teaches students to become faithful stewards of the earth. It’s included in our mission statement, encouraged through our commitment to sustainability, and reinforced through opportunities like beekeeping and organic gardening.

More than seventy students and faculty members traveled to New York City in September 2014 to participate with 300,000 activists in the People’s Climate March. The march was a call to action on climate change ahead of the United Nations Climate Summit.

George School students think beyond the classroom and feel empowered to tackle world challenges. Their advocacy on environmental sustainability led to the creation of a task force of board members, staff, faculty, and other experts to study issues and develop a plan to reduce the school’s overall environmental impact.

George School made a decision to divest our endowment from coal mining companies, to commit to investing in companies that deliver alternative energy solutions, and to implement new policies and procedures on campus to improve energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Students also had the opportunity to participate in a Green Initiative contest in April 2015, sponsored by the Board of Trustees. More than ninety students submitted proposals for an environmental stewardship project with an estimated budget of up to $76,000. The board selected four winning proposals that create a rain barrel program, improve recycling efforts on campus, establish a thrift store to recycle clothing, and add a deer enclosure along North Loop road to protect native trees and plants.

Alumni Come Back to Campus

More than 450 alumni returned to campus for Alumni Weekend in May 2015. The new Fitness and Athletics Center was dedicated during the All-Alumni Gathering and alumni awardee Mark Updegrove ’80 and retiring faculty—Linda Espenshade Heinemann, Stephanie McBride, and Bob McBride—were honored during the gathering.

Other highlights of the weekend included the Presidential Leadership workshop presented by Mark, the Upside Down Drawing workshop offered by painting and drawing teacher Jo¯ Adachi, reunion photos, the annual alumni games, and an all-community BBQ.

George School Connect Introduced

Tedx George School

George School Connect, the new alumni mobile app powered

by Evertrue, was unveiled on Alumni Weekend. Available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, George School Connect provides easy access to the alumni directory, news and updates from George School, and more.

Its components include a mapping feature that shows alumni living nearby, a networking feature that allows users to connect using LinkedIn, and the ability to send updated contact information directly to George School through the app. Alumni may download the app anytime at georgeschool.org/connect.

The first TEDxGeorgeSchool conference was held in June 2015 to help position the school as a thought leader in the field of education. The event explored a range of ideas about what should be taught to students who must adapt to a world that is undergoing an unprecedented rate of cultural and intellectual change.

More than a week after TEDxGeorgeSchool ended participants were still buzzing about the conference. One hundred of the 250 attendees returned surveys to TED and 64 percent of the respondents gave the conference a perfect “10” and 91percent of the respondents ranked it between eight and ten, with ten being the best score.

The articles about the TEDx conference on our website were viewed 6,700 times by 1,800 people. In the short time that the videos were on the TEDxGeorgeScool site before going live on the TEDx site, the talks were watched more than 3,200 times.

What do you appreciate most about George School?

George School’s greatest strengths are its diversity and teaching. Long before “diversity” became a politically correct and fashionable term in the education world, the school figured out that the best way to create a dynamic and intellectually engaging student body and community was to foster diversity. There are many ways the school does this—too many to list, in fact. I was an Oliver Scholar. That program and George School changed my life, but I would also say the Oliver Scholars reciprocated by significantly contributing to the cultural and intellectual life of the school.

Teachers make any institution, but having attended Duke University and spent time volunteering in schools in the United States and Europe, I can say that George School has some of the best teachers I have ever encountered. They are world-class.

Ironically without the educational foundation I got at George School, it is possible I wouldn’t be in a position to give anything. If I can help even one student the way the school helped me, I will always give back.

How have you stayed connected to George School while living in England?

We have had several alumni events over the years, and with proper planning, alumni from many different years, including myself, have managed to attend. While I have given to George School financially, it’s not a prerequisite to staying involved with the school. Maybe I am spoiled living in a major European capital, but I have found it very easy to stay involved.

Why are you so committed to giving to George School?

Kevin lives in London, where he is executive director at Morgan Stanley. He received his BSE from Duke University and serves on the Duke Engineering School Board of Visitors. How did George School influence you?

The school offers so much to participate in and explore. It had incredible academics, a very diverse community (though not as diverse or dynamic as it is today), a large array of academic and extracurricular activities, excellent teachers and coaches, and a global outlook so important at that age. I was very athletic. At George School I became a three-sport athlete, which I wouldn’t have been able to do in my large public school. Athletics gave me a tremendous amount of confidence going off to college, and so did boarding.

I also had really good mentoring—from the faculty, the dorm staff, my field hockey coach and advisor Anne LeDuc. I remember going to my first conference and saying, “I’m really happy” because I had great grades in middle-level classes. She said, “I’m not happy. You have to push yourself here. You really have to try to do more.” George School provides the support to grow as an individual as you learn to be part of a community. It gave me a foundation for how I was going to look at life.

Why have you given both your time and your treasure to George School?

My parents believed in giving back. They were heavily involved in philanthropy. One of the places I’ve always given to is George School. I’ve been very involved for a long time. I’ve served on committees for the library, curriculum review, and the new athletics facility. Before, ours was the worst athletics facility among peer schools. Now it’s just incredible.

Many years ago, I set up a fund in honor of Anne LeDuc to provide stipends for coaching. Then I gave for campaigns. My father passed away last year, and Nancy [my twin] and I were able to give to the athletics center to name a classroom for our math teacher and Nancy’s advisor Dottie Detwiler. I had some very, very good teachers—teachers you remember. I’m interested in giving to educational things, so I also donated to support professional development for the athletic staff, because the education of coaches benefits the education of students.

Carol lives in Chadds Ford with her husband Harry, who has accompanied her to almost all reunions. After receiving a BA from Trinity College, Hartford, CT and an MBA in real estate law from Baruch College of the City University of New York, Carol worked as a clinical counselor for Planned Parenthood, in real estate development, and as a philanthropist. Together with Harry, she raised four children and they now have five grandchildren.

She enjoys swimming, playing tennis, biking, and traveling. Her twin sister Nancy ’71 and brother Jon ’75 also graduated from George School, and parents Arthur and Lea Powell supported George School with an endowed scholarship.

Did your family [including brother Marc ’87] feel similarly about George School?

My brother and I had very different experiences but both had great results. The whole family came to the same conclusion: George School helps create good people. It taught you to appreciate, understand, and respect different points of view. People who came from innercity New York and from Doylestown could both be taught something and teach one another.

Scholarship Supporter

What experiences were particularly meaningful for you?

I really enjoyed musical theater with Michael Sherrin as well as running track and crosscountry. Dave Satterthwaite ’65 was a very good mentor. As I think back, it was a heck of a lot more about becoming a young man than it was about running. I had a really good relationship with John Davison, who taught AP US History and Topics in Middle Eastern History. John and I did not agree politically, but that didn’t matter. He taught me how to reason and think critically.

Why did you and your family choose to fund scholarships?

Though my parents were more successful later, they sacrificed a lot to put us through George School, but they never complained. They just believed in it. We all agreed. Making George School available to others was a good idea, and that was the genesis of supporting scholarships. When mom passed away just over two years ago, we decided that a terrible thing could have some good come out of it. We asked everyone we knew to give money to a scholarship fund. People were incredibly generous, and we established two endowed scholarships.

When I attended George School, I noticed that people did not have the same experience I had because they could not afford it. So my wife and I gave some money for an emergency fund—like for a pair of shoes to go out for a sport. And the family created other partial scholarships for people who want to go to George School but just need a little help. It should not be a place only for the wealthy and the poor on full scholarship. George School has always been thoughtful about that.

Brian spent much of his youth in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s from Duke and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He and his family live in Fairfax, Virginia, where he started his own company, which works with insurance companies to provide senior citizens with nursing care and to prevent hospitalizations. His brother, who lives in Richmond, Virginia, works with him.

Our Early Benefactors George School was born from a single major gift from John Malin George who committed the bulk of his estate “for the purpose of erecting a boarding school.”

His generous example was followed by many others throughout the history of George School.

William P. Bancroft was a major contributor to the original land purchase and the construction of Drayton, Retford, the infirmary, Inwood, Eastwood and Wayside, Eyre Line House, Sharon and Alumni Fields, the swimming pool, and the first capital campaign for endowment in the early 1920s.

Howard T. Hallowell, Class of 1898 contributed to the building of Hallowell Arts Center in 1948. Forty years later, the residuary interest of his estate was added to the Hallowell Scholarship Fund.

The Spruance and Alden families underwrote two major additions to the George School campus in the short span of three years—the Spruance Alden Science Center in 1971 and the Meetinghouse in 1974.

John B. Campbell ’41 financed a faculty town house in 1974 and funded the Campbell and Westwood Dormitories in the early 1990s.

What do you appreciate about George School?

I appreciate that it is an excellent school with high standards and creates an environment that encourages making friendships and taking on more adult responsibilities. I appreciate the values central to its culture: integrity, commitment, compassion, tolerance, and respect for others. At George School I learned the importance of working for a larger good, not for oneself alone, and to help those most in need. The school gave me excellent academic preparation and left me with a love of learning and curiosity about the world. The values I learned formed the foundation for my career working with economic and social development programs in developing countries. I learned what a joy it is to be part of a community that respects people for who they are.

Why was it important to attend and give in honor of your 50th reunion?

It was extraordinary to spend a couple of days with sixty classmates and be surrounded with memories from fifty years earlier. All the events were interesting, but the most special was the memorial meeting. Looking back on fifty years and having spent forty-six of them in developing countries—where I saw students struggling to learn in small, crowded, broken-down schools—I understand so much better how important it is for kids to have an institution like George School and how fortunate we were then. It is appropriate to take these occasions to recognize what we’ve gotten from the school and how important it’s been in our lives.

How do you feel about George School today?

The student body is much more diverse than it was when I graduated, and students seem even more alive and aware of important issues in the US and worldwide, which is great.

At the reunion I was struck again by the simple, natural beauty of the campus. George School provides an incredibly supportive environment for learning and growing up. I read every issue of the alumni magazine avidly. Since I have spent so much of my career living overseas, there have been few opportunities to be involved with George School. Now that I’m retired, I hope to be more closely connected.

After receiving a BA from Oberlin College and an MA from George Washington University, Anne embarked on a career with the US Agency for International Development (USAID). In addition to directing programs from Washington—many on the Middle East and Asia—and teaching at the National War College, she served with her family in Pakistan, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Jordan. Anne retired this summer. * For milestone reunions like Anne’s, classes often unite to make a significant and long-lasting gift to George School.

George School-Westtown Loyalty Challenge George School won the Loyalty Challenge and recaptured the Machemer Cup from Westtown School in 2014-2015. Each young alumni class along with the graduating senior class from George School and Westtown School competes head-to-head for Loyalty Points. The cup is awarded to the school with the greater percentage of donors to the Annual Fund for each class.

George School is a very special place. It’s important to keep giving back to keep it as special.

What do you value about George School The sense of openness and generosity that’s prevalent at the school.

The teachers put everything they have into teaching. They are committed heart and soul to being educators and mentors. I still keep in touch with a lot of them. I spent about two hours talking to Ralph [Lelii] when I was thinking of leaving finance, and he supported me in doing what I’m really passionate about. George School planted something in me that ultimately made me search for something different.

Living in New York, how do you stay connected to the school?

My grandparents live in Newtown, so I see it when I visit. I keep in touch with some of the teachers and a few core friends. Some of my closest friends were from George School. And of course the school brought Greg [Plumb ’07] and me together. We’re getting married next summer and having the party the night before our wedding on the patio of the Anderson Library.

As a young graduate, why is it important for you to give as you have?

George School is a very special place. I give to help the school stay as special as it was when I was there. The school gave me financial aid. I wouldn’t have been able to go without it. I can’t give a scholarship—I don’t have enough for that—but hopefully I can keep giving more, because everyone should be able to attend. When I was working for Soros, there was a 3:1 matching gift program, so my gift was magnified four times. My company no longer has that, but a lot of companies do, so it’s a good thing to look into.

Inna graduated from Penn’s Huntsman Program with a BS in finance from Wharton and a BA in international studies from the School of Arts and Sciences. She left the world of finance to become director of purchasing for Blue Apron, a food (and recipe) delivery startup whose goal is to get people back in the kitchen and eating healthy food. She lives in Manhattan with fiancé and George School classmate Greg Plumb ’07. The two are avid triathletes and recently completed their first full Ironman.

What important lesson did you learn at George School?

To give people the benefit of the doubt, to be confident in your personal views, and to know that there are people out there who will support you. George School is so diverse, and it exposed me to a lot of perspectives, which helped me figure out my own views. This winter I did some organizing around Black Lives Matter. I was surprised by how supportive the school and faculty members were. Nancy Starmer reached out to thank me for the organizing I was doing. I realized you should not let the fear of not being supported hold you back from doing something that you believe in.

You were instrumental in getting every senior to give to the Annual Fund this year. How and why did you do that?

Since freshman year I was involved in the Annual Fund, getting people in my class to donate. Our participation rate was 60 percent freshman through junior year. I also helped in phonathons. It was really fun to talk to alumni about their time at George School, and really inspirational when they contribute. For our senior year, an alumni family offered our class funds for our senior week activities if we improved our Annual Fund participation to 75 percent and then 100 percent, which we did in three weeks. We used the money for prom and other senior week activities, and the balance for our class gift.

Why is it important for young people to contribute to George School?

George School gives us so much. Sometimes it is hard to recognize all it gives to the us, especially if George School is all you know. As a student who was able to attend because of financial aid, it’s important for me to give back now and in the future so that people from all over can attend. Tuition cannot cover everything that the school provides. By giving, you help ensure the George School you experienced—if not a better version—will be experienced by future students.

A Philadelphia resident, Qudsiyyah will attend the University of Chicago, where she hopes to major in biology on her way to medical school.

At George School she was a dorm prefect, led Open Doors, and played soccer and softball. * S tudents for the Annual Fund educates students about the need for annual giving. I give to share my thanks for how George School has affected me.

Why are you happy that your daughter Sydney attends George School?

We wanted her to go to George School because of the importance of the individual in the community and curriculum. We knew that she needed a school that would treat her as a person and not a number.

Also, since she grew up on Martha’s Vineyard, a very insular and generally non-diverse community, we wanted her to go to a place with peers of different races and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our island community is very small and close, and knowing the strength of the George School community, we thought that leaving home for another safe and comforting community would be an easy transition.

Syd is loving George School after the initial shock of being away from home wore off.

Does being a graduate make being a George School parent meaningful?

Leslie: Being a graduate makes it easier for me to understand and relate to her experience at George School. We have even shared some of the same teachers and classrooms. I’m familiar with the area and know all about the organization of her schedule and meeting for worship. Although many things have changed, many have stayed the same.

Why have you chosen to give to George School over the years?

Leslie: We give to George School because I feel that my time spent there was an integral part of my development. I made friends there whom I’m still in touch with, and I give to share my thanks for how George School has affected me.

Eric and Leslie live on Martha’s Vineyard, where she has owned a clothing store for twenty-five years. Eric has degrees in English, jazz guitar, and classical guitar. After teaching at Berklee College of Music, he has settled into a thriving music career on the Vineyard. The couple also operates a frozen yogurt shop. At George School, Sydney is a peer group leader and is active in theater.

I want to give back because of how George School has made my son Kelt a different and better person. He has changed so much in his confidence level.

What do you appreciate about George School?

I appreciate meeting for worship, which helps students to practice how to be still. In stillness, it helps you reflect on who you are and on your actions. I also like that George School is very organized. It provides a model and steps so students learn how to plan and organize.

Why have you, as a parent, chosen to contribute to George School?

Part of the reason is because I see my son’s growth. I want to give back because of how George School has made Kelt a different and better person. He has changed so much in his confidence level. He interacts well with his friends. He is happy to be able to learn. He is involved in so many different activities and positions. By contributing I am following in Kelt’s footsteps. I am thankful, and I also donate because I love George School.

Living so far away, how do you stay connected to George School?

George School really has a great system of alerting parents. I don’t need to worry. We know exactly what is going on all the time, since the school keeps updating us by email. It makes me trust George School.

Jratsri lives in both Taiwan and Thailand. She is vice president of a telecom card company in Taiwan, president of an agarwood forest plantation in Thailand, and director and board member of a local nonprofit that helps foreigners in Taiwan. She loves to learn, to travel, and to eat, and she didn’t exaggerate about Kelt’s involvement at George School. He has been a member of Student Council, the Executive Committee, the Student Activities Board, and the Chinese/ Taiwanese club. He has been an international student mentor and an Art For Relief and Senior Peer Group leader. Kelt also has acted, played junior varsity tennis, and designed shirts for the community.

What about George School matters to you after all these years?

The spirit of Quakerism that imbues the school. The warmth and the ethos are what make it very special. The fact that everybody is called by their first names seems minor, but it has a way of bringing students closer to teachers. I remember our son Christopher describing the classes, and they totally engaged him. He was always interested in learning, though not always in school, but those teachers really captured his attention. There’s something about a boarding school where kids are making the transition from children to young adults, and George School does that beautifully. It always raised our spirits to go to campus.

Why do you still support George School and support it so loyally?

After the school received that extraordinary gift from Barbara Dodd Anderson ’50, we felt it important to demonstrate our financial support. We’re not wealthy by any stretch. The typical reaction of folks with our financial circumstance would be to say that what we do won’t matter, but we think it’s important to show support and we will continue to. We believe very strongly in what George School stands for and the quality of the education it provides.

As much as possible, we want to support the mission of George School, both the educational aspect and sustainability.

Why did you choose to help fund the school’s sustainability through solar power?

We’re committed to education and the environment, so we try to direct most of our gifts to scholarship but also to sustainability. Without trying to improve the environment in which we live, we will all be in big trouble. We installed solar panels on our farm (our energy bill is always $1.93), so we were happy to donate for the solar installation on the new Fitness and Athletics Center. As much as possible, we want to support the mission of George School, both the educational aspect and sustainability.

Todd and Laurie live on a farm in Cherryville, New Jersey, that’s been in her family for seven generations. Their business, Zimmerman/Volk Associates, consults on urban development and redevelopment, including new traditional neighborhoods. Son Christopher (known as Kit at George School) works for them remotely from outside San Diego, where he lives with his wife and baby daughter. Todd and Laurie love bicycling and getting a dose of urban living at their loft in Providence, Rhode Island. * A s consistent donors to the Annual Fund, Todd and Laurie are members of George School’s Sticky Bun Society, named for the traditional breakfast treat. They understand that the school their son enjoyed was made possible by the generosity of donors of the past, and they want to make the same difference for students of the future.

What do you find special about George School?

Our students are normal teenagers just like kids all over the world, but at George School they are encouraged implicitly and explicitly to show their best selves. And it’s not simply adults saying, “You need to behave in a way that shows your integrity and authenticity.”

Kids say that to each other and to themselves. Even if your best self is complicated and messy, you will not be ridiculed; you will be supported. People are allowed to be who they are, and for some of our students that is being too cool for school and for a lot of others it’s embracing joy and wonder.

What have you enjoyed about your various roles at the school?

I get to see light bulbs go on all the time—in the dorm, in the classroom, in college counseling, in social duty, even on Discipline Committee. Students understand the idea of continuing revelation. Something can be revealed to them about math or literature or how the world works or being true to themselves. It happens everywhere. I see students in English class realize how to make a logical argument or that they like poetry. On the Discipline Committee, I see students understand that their behavior has meaning. On the service learning trip to Mississippi, I see students recognize there is great poverty in this country and that there’s something they can do right now to help a person. That is astonishing and sustaining.

Why do you contribute to George School?

A parent once asked me why I work at George School, and I gave an answer similar to what I just said. I donate to the Annual Fund because I want to show my pride not just by working here, but by supporting the school and its mission. I want parents and alums to have the same level of pride that I do. They can see that faculty giving is moving toward 100 percent.

They understand how much faculty give in terms of time and energy and care, so if they see that we also contribute to the Annual Fund, it is that much more meaningful.

Rachel teaches English and is an associate director of college counseling, but she has also been a math teacher, director of student activities, dean, dorm head, ESL teacher, international student coordinator, and co-advisor of the newspaper in the fifteen years she has been at George School. In addition, she has obtained two graduate degrees—in secondary education and an MFA in creative writing. As she says, “I am a big proponent of lifelong learning.” *By contributing—and encouraging other faculty to contribute—to the Annual Fund, Rachel shows that working at George School is more than a job.

EITC and OSTC programs allow companies who operate and pay taxes in Pennsylvania to redirect a portion of their tax liability to George School as a philanthropic gift for financial aid. By making a gift directly to George School’s financial aid program they can receive a substantial tax credit and can save in Pennsylvania taxes as much as 90 percent of a gift up to $750,000. There is no minimum amount to participate.

Pennsylvania Tax Credit Programs Support Financial Aid George School is so thankful to the companies listed below who participated in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs. These two state programs made it possible for twenty-two promising students from Pennsylvania to attend George School during the 2014-2015 school year regardless of their financial situation.
