Dita Von Teese at the Genlux BritWeek Designer of the Year Awards.

“My favorite candy? These French sweets called Les Coucougnettes du Vert Galant. ‘Coucougnettes’ is a cute word for testicles, and the ‘Vert Galant’ refers to the handsome, womanizing French King Henri IV. It’s a ginger and Armagnac-infused almond draped in dark chocolate and then covered in pink marzipan. I love these sweets and the tin they come in, which features the king with two hot wenches on his lap. Ha! I’m totally serious, though. I’m going to send you a picture...Is that too much for American readers? Otherwise you can lie and tell people I like Reese’s peanut butter cups.”—Dita Von Teese

“Maltesers. I love honeycomb and chocolate and trying to keep them ‘round for as long as possible.” —Alice Temperley

“I like See’s candies... better than Belgian sweets, I think.”

3. Three beautiful celebrities; three cover worthy photoshoots. Claudia Bassols, Kim Kardashian, and Molly Sims.

y secret obsessions right now are Sudoku puzzles, BrickBreaker, “The Real Housewives of New York,” and the Food Network, where I just can’t get enough of “Barefoot Contessa.” I’m also hooked on that PBS cooking-slash-travel show, “On the Road Again,” where Mario Batali, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Bittman and Claudia Bassols take a road trip—eating and drinking their way through Spain. We fell in love with Claudia through the show and invited her to LA for a Genlux photoshoot (p. 44). And now, fortunately for us, she’s decided to stay in California to pursue an acting career.

CECILIA’s PAGE

the only fashion runway show from Paris or London to appear in LA this year. We showcased the collections of Todd Lynn and accessory designer Rupert Sanderson.

One of the more difficult decisions for this issue was selecting our cover. There were three great models to choose from: Claudia, brilliantly photographed by Paul Schefz; the gorgeous Kim Kardashian, shot by Marc Baptiste (p. 62); and the stunning Molly Sims (p. 76). In the end, after much vacillating, we went with this beautiful shot of Molly photographed by worldclass shooter Alberto Tolot.

Speaking of world-class, the highlight of the past few weeks was the dinner and a movie that Kathy DavoudiGohari, the store manager of Valentino, invited me to. The movie was the premiere screening of Valentino: T he Last Emperor at LACMA. The dinner was a private affair honoring Valentino, the man himself, at the Montage Beverly Hills (p. 24). As we prepared this candy-themed issue of Genlux, our creative director, Stephen Kamifuji, inquired of some friends about their favorite candy. My favorite e-mail response was this one (at left) from Dita Von Teese. Oh, that Dita!

When I asked her why she chose a candlelight dinner and not a big celebration, she responded, “I wanted to share a very intimate moment in the garden at my Maison with my close friends from Los Angeles. It was a toast for love and friendship.” And sure enough, lots of her friends were there to support her. At the beginning of the dinner, Mary J. Blige stood up and delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing her love and appreciation for the talented French fashion designer and reminiscing about how, when they met in 2001, they immediately became fast friends. Like everyone else, I was genuinely touched by her words. Mary, you rock!

20 GENLUX SUMMER / 2009

It’s the season of the jumpsuit, love it or hate it! Easy to put on in the morning, but could be a nightmare to remove during trips to the powder room (p.106). Precious metals and brightly shimmering satins and silks are the ultimate in luxe eveningwear. One example I particularly like is the gorgeous Reem Acra gold silk chiffon lamé pleated shirt-dress (p.104). Let’s not forget nude tones, the foundation this summer. From the sharp, tailored Graeme Black Couture duo-tone jacket to the Versace crème skirt (p.103), you’ll love them all. Time to take a trip? Travel in style with the Prada Saffiano trolley. Add colors to your wardrobe with the Alexander McQueen pink backless dress (p.32). So sexy! Enjoy our c an dy issue and watch your sweets!

We go behind the scenes to reveal how Francesca Tolot achieved Molly Sims’ cover look!

Francesca Tolot for Cloutier Agency on Molly’s look: “Molly has such a great strong face, and there was a lot going on in the shoot, so I decided to go with a natural makeup look on her.” CHEEK: “I dusted M • A • C Style Warrior Bronzing Powder in Refined Golden all over the face— more than on just the apples of the cheek, I dusted it on her jawbone, forehead, and neck, making sure to blend it all.”

Francesca Tolot, makeup artist, CloutierAgency.com Tolot’s celebrity clients include Beyoncé, Shakira, Faith Hill, Jessica Simpson, Cindy Crawford, Diane Lane, Tina Turner, Pink, Christina Aguilera, and Elizabeth Taylor.

22 GENLUX SUMMER / 2009

EYE: “In keeping with the soft look on the eyes, I went with no eyeliner and used only eye shadow. I used Christian Dior 609 Earth Reflection Five-Colour Palette to do this, taking the darkest color in the palette around the lid onto the top and bottom of the eye and keeping it close to the lash lines. Then I used the medium beige color on the crease of the eye, followed by the lightest light color on the eyelid—Molly has deep-set eyes, and this really helps lighten them and bring them out. I then used the darker of the light colors on the brow bone, followed by lots of mascara on the top and bottom.” Christian Dior 609 Earth Reflection Five-Colour Palette, $56, nordstrom.com; sephora.com

FACE: “For her skin, I used the La Mer The Treatment Foundation SPF15 03 Buff. The concealer I used was a lot lighter than her skin tone—I wanted to intensify the cheekbone; I blended it out toward the apples of her cheeks for a 3-D effect. She already has a strong face, but I wanted to add some light for the photograph.”

La Mer The Radiant Concealer 02 Beige SPF25, Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills, 310-275-4211

LIP: “I went with a nude lip color. I wanted to keep this soft as well—it was applied with no liner, just very transparent faint color with a little hint of sparkle.” M·A·C Tricolor Lipgloss in Just Dessert, $17.50, M·A·C, Hollywood & Highland 323-465-5030

Louise Taper presents the Costume Council’s Legend award to Valentino Garavani at the Montage Hotel Beverly Hills

Tom Blumenthal, Cecilia Moreno, Genlux publisher

As if a film director’s take on Valentino would be the stamp of approval required to cement the legacy of the man who exemplifies haute couture, Matt Tyrnauer’s Valentino: The Last Emperor seems to do just that. It is a revealing, beautiful, and honest account of the designer whose lavish lifestyle includes traveling exclusively by private jet with his six Pugs in tow —each snug in its own seat—and whose presence still draws tears from those he first meets. Recently, LACMA’s Costume Council, spearheaded by Betty Leonard, treated local fashion royalty to a screening of Tyrnauer’s film and to a private dinner at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. The evening was highlighted by a presentation of the council’s Legend Award to Valentino and his partner of 47 years, Giancarlo Giammetti. Among the celeb guests were Tom Ford, Anne Hathaway, Nicky Hilton, Rose McGowan, Rita Wilson, and Rachel Zoe. With a foyer drenched in a cascade of Venetian glass, a living room with a warm, crackling fire, a kitchen offering an array of Parisian delicacies, and rooms full of exquisitely unique, ultra-feminine fashion, every hand-picked aspect of Catherine Malandrino Maison invokes the spirit of its creator. In short, it is a place the chic French designer, discerning fashionistas, and connoisseurs of beauty can call home. “My Maison is an invitation to a European experience—a warm, inviting atmosphere, an open window to my creations and inspirations. It’s a place I dream to live in,” gushes Malandrino at the six-month anniversary of the concept store’s opening, which she celebrated with an intimate candlelit dinner attended by thirty of her closest friends including celebrity devotees Mary J. Blige, Rosario Dawson, Billy Zane, Keisha Whitaker, Elizabeth Banks, Sophia Bush, and Garcelle BeauvaisNilon. The mouthwatering Mediterranean fare was prepared by chef Ben of Tagine. With her brand expanding into lifestyle, Malandrino’s success shows no signs of waning. As she puts it, “I love life and it gives me wings to accomplish my dreams. I feel many women today have become heroes and are able to combine all the roles as a modern, independent working woman, friend, mother, and lover.” —Ashley Hume able s

Genlux magazine and BritWeek teamed up for what they hope will be an ongoing affair: Their first annual Designer of the Year awards and fashion show. The evening, which benefited Project Angel Food, honored two distinguished British designers: Todd Lynn, as Designer of the Year, and Rupert Sanderson, as Accessory Designer of the Year.

BritWeek co-chairman Nigel Lythgoe charmed us as the evening’s MC, and co-chairman British Consul-General Bob Peirce and his wife, Sharon Harroun Peirce, presented the designers with their beautiful crystal awards. Musical guest Morganne delighted the crowd that included Dita Von Teese, Rumer Willis, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, Ali Sims, and Beau Dunn, with renditions of “Imagine” and “History Repeating” just before Lynn’s collection—the only Paris or London Fashion Week Fall ’09 runway show to appear in LA this year— made its triumphant strut down the 100foot runway to a standing ovation. Perhaps the evening’s only glitch was its rather abrupt ending. Immediately following the awards presentation, Nigel announced, “Okay, I’m told we have to get out now. They’re going to turn off the power!” Apparently, the Pacific Design Center adheres to some strict time limits.

U

nless you’ve seen “On the Road Again,” the PBS television show where Mario Batali, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Bittman, and Claudia Bassols eat and drink their way through Spain over a three-month period, you’ve not been mesmerized by watching Bassols—the Spanish scenestealing beauty who is a blend of Penélope Cruz and Cindy Crawford—delicately crunch through a chocolate churro. “Gwyneth and I joked at the beginning of the show that we should take ‘before and after’ pictures because we were convinced that we were going to gain weight. Fortunately, we didn’t. I think the secret was that we ate very fresh and unprocessed food. We had big meals but didn’t snack...much.” Next up for Bassols, whose favorite restaurants are Arzak’s in Spain and Batali’s Osteria Mozza in Los Angeles? “I’m based in Los Angeles now and I have a few American projects lined up, but it’s too early to talk about them. All I can reveal for now, with very much regret, is that this time there will be no eating involved.”

La dolce vita Kim Kardashian arrives for our interview at Sur Restaurant without a hint of makeup, and after a cheerful introduction she immediately gets down to business...by ordering meatloaf with French fries. ¶ “I’m starving!” she says, apparently unaware that females in Hollywood aren’t supposed to eat, at least not real food. Kardashian laughs, seeming amused by her own choice. “I never order meatloaf in restaurants—this is the weirdest thing ever.” >

lthough she’s perched on a pair of Jimmy Choo heels, Kardashian’s style appears to be as low-key as her gastronomic preferences. Her jewelry is vintage, but the rest of her outfit is comfortable, not flashy. “My top and pants? I have no idea. But I can look at the labels when I get home and text you,” she offers. And while she professes love for designers such as Maison Martin Margiela and Stella McCartney, she isn’t afraid to simply go with what strikes her fancy. “Lately I’m really loving vintage pieces,” she says. “One of my favorite things to do is shop in my mom’s closet!” Mom would be Kris Jenner, and no mention of the family would be complete without reference to their connection to the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Kardashian’s late father, Robert, was a member of Simpson’s legal defense team. “My mom was best friends with Nicole [Simpson], and my dad was best friends with O.J.,” she explains. “We had just gone on vacation with their whole family to Mexico, like we did every year. So [the murder] was shocking. We felt like we had to choose sides. [Her sister] Kourtney and I took my dad’s side, mainly because my mom was remarried to Bruce Jenner six months after her divorce. It wasn’t so much about the trial and what was going on with the facts—we were young, and we didn’t quite understand it.” But Kardashian now praises stepfather Jenner. “Bruce made a promise to my dad that he would take care of us, and he has. He’s been an amazing stepfather, and I know that my dad would be so happy.” Privacy is hard to come by these days, with the world watching Kardashian and her family on their successful reality series, E!’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” So what’s it like having a camera catch every cough, sneeze, and sibling catfight? “I love doing the show,” she says. “When we signed up, we definitely said we were going to show everything and we were going to just be ourselves—crazy and all—and it worked.” One reluctant guest on the show is Kardashian’s boyfriend of two years, NFL player Reggie Bush, whom Kardashian credits with keeping her grounded. “We’re complete opposites,” she says. “He’s private and hates to go to events. I have to beg him to come with me and be my date.” It was a recent quote of Kardashian’s that seemed to bring her even more notoriety than her reality show. Referring to an un-retouched photo that recently made its way around the Internet, Kardashian wrote on her blog, “So what! I have cellulite!” and saw her exclamation turn into a battle cry for every woman feeling the pressure to be thin. “I was shocked at how much it was quoted,” she says. “But young girls need to know that cover girls are not realistic. Nobody’s perfect. I’ve gotten great responses from young women and their mothers. And you know what? That makes me proud.” G

M

& M s. E s tate j ewel r y. Va l entino. J. Crew. Her mom’s red velvet cake. These are a few of Molly Sims’ favorite things. Oh, and then there are the prescription prenatal vitamins. But don’t alert the tabloids just yet, because the super model-turned-actress isn’t pregnant; the vitamins are the key to Sims’ luxurious locks. “I’ve got to tell you this secret,” she offers. “Prescription prenatals! My hair broke off during a show because of all the torture it took, and I was put on these vitamins. They’re amazing for your hair and nails.” After seeing these photos, something tells me the girl’s onto something. And Sims knows a thing or two about beauty secrets. The Kentucky native spent years as a model before successfully transitioning to acting with five years on the NBC hit television series “Las Vegas.” And while she speaks fondly of her modeling days and time spent hosting MTV’s “House of Style,” Sims says she doesn’t miss the scrutiny of the supermodel life. “The rejection you get through modeling is tough,” she says. “I’ve been told that I was too fat, too thin…and I was 22 before I knew that my nose was crooked. Once you’ve been through all that, to go to an acting audition and hear, ‘You’re not really right for the part,’ it’s like, no problem!” Sims says she owes her success in both fields to the positive self-image her family instilled in her. “My parents were always very supportive and told me I could do anything I wanted to do. It was always, ‘If one door closes...kick it open!’ ” But she admits her confidence took a hit when she had a huge growth spurt as a teenager. “When I was in eighth grade, I grew to the height I am now. I was a foot taller than everyone else, and it was awkward. I remember my mom and I getting into a massive fight before my prom because she said, ‘Honey, you need a little bit of a heel,’ and I was like, ‘No way!’” On this day, the news Sims is most excited to share is that she was recently named an ambassador for Populations Services International, a nonprofit that addresses health problems in sixty developing countries. This is in addition to her involvement with the grassroots nonprofit Friends of El Faro, which aids an impoverished orphanage in Mexico. “I’m very excited about it,” she says of her charity work. “That’s the great thing about my business. I can tell you some really negative things—you become a little jaded, a little paranoid—but the really great thing is that you can help a lot of people.” So what’s next for Molly Sims? “I just signed on to do an independent film called Hickor y Nation. Also, I’m considering going back to TV. I took a year off after ‘Las Vegas,’ and it was great, but we had such a wonderful time on that show, and you get kind of addicted to the schedule.” And might there be a musical career on the horizon like so many models and actors have pursued before her? “Well,” she says with a hearty laugh, “considering that I’m tone deaf, I don’t know if that would be the way to go.” G

ARIS FASHION WEEK FALL 09 OVERVIEW. Go to the mirror, check your bosoms. If they are still up, you can wear the lace shirts with poof petal skirts, ribbons, ruffles, and lace. Little girl with big girl ideas. This Paris Fashion Week was about swapping places—so Miu Miu became YSL. Best of Breed goes to Alexander McQueen and Best in Show goes to Lanvin. Best Trench Coat (with see-through latticework at the back) goes to Jean Paul Gaultier. Best Hair goes to Guido Palau’s team, and makeup to Pat McGrath. Think RED/PLUM SHINY LIPS with BLACK EYESHADOW, and lashings of mascara. —Amanda Eliasch Through the streets of Paris, I arrived by black Mercedes to the shows…my first day as Fashion Editor of GENLUX. Tilla Rudel, my wonderful Parisian friend, took me to see Anne Valerie Hash, one of the first shows to open Pret-aPorter. From her magnificent atelier in the 10th arrondisement she showed her usual imagination. Her colours were muted mauves, pale, dusky pinks, greys, and browns, with the girls wearing sparkling tights and strappy platform shoes, and a chic variation of Amy Winehouse’s punky hair. I have a passion for Hash’s thin, delicate lace shirts, and now she’s adapted the idea

into dresses with panels of fur. Her slouchy suits are a little too comfortable for me, as I like to live in a corset to give myself good posture. ALEXANDER McQUEEN I felt the love at this show for Alexander McQueen. The hard men and women of fashion were still awake, despite their very long day, and applauded and called out for this avant-garde designer. Rubbish was the theme: a huge mound of all his odds and sods was center stage, hundreds of painted Coke tins were sprayed and placed as head pieces on the models in strange, ultrafuturistic shapes. The clothes were exaggerated into 1950s austere >

> shapes; the women on stilts were superhuman, alien creatures, species from another planet. Clown-like puppets with lampshades and umbrellas on their heads. Even when exhaustion had spread to every part of my body, I felt elated…and this is what fashion is about, and why we have to see the shows and not just watch them on style.com. Alexander McQueen takes us always on a magical journey…how lucky we are.

Jean Paul Gaultier

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER opened the lesbian sadomasochistic salon in red velvet show to the FLYING LIZARDS version of “ROXANNE,” and PINK FLOYD’s “MONEY.” Betony Vernon dressed as a bondage queen with a whip, fighting with models - elegant clothes against cat burglars - visors on hats and masks - high hair, broad shoulders, red roses, a black and white floor in the atelier of Gaultier. Backless trench coats, tights with horizontal stripes, red lips, slicked-back hair, glossy and gorgeous. Acting was required, and for once the models were believable. Nothing very new, but thank God for that… at least we won’t have to try on Balenciaga’s new weirdo skirts with too much material that makes us all look porky... I love Gaultier’s straight elegant look, so him and so dramatic. I bought a coat the other day and the wow factor is incredibly sexy. I long to be his MADAME…he can kiss my booties. CHANEL took me back in time to ruffles in Amsterdam, Edwardian England, punk and wandering puritanical priests... Long slimline coats over black chiffon on cream silk, and flat, round hats. With his huge clientele it is probably impossible to keep everybody happy, but at least Karl Lagerfeld still can be applauded, and comes out with some successful surprises. Baby pink linings, baby pink tights, black jackets, ruffles on sleeves and the neck. The sage green trimmings. The very beautiful Amanda Harlech got me my invitation from their press office, so I am a lucky girl. STELLA McCARTNEY showed lace with the lightest of silks. Light, happy playful clothes…as the models skipped down the runway they looked comfortable and free. The show was thoroughly glamorous and there was her father, Paul, with his girlfriend. Behind the scenes Pat McGrath was chirpily pinching Snowden Hill’s cheeks as we sneaked in to see the models getting ready. A very relaxed atmosphere, and no doubt I will go down Conduit St. in August to get one of her evening dresses. GIAMBATTISTA VALLI made me feel I had slipped back to 1968 and was in Rome having a drink with the late Princess Pignatelli. She had such enormous style and would have loved Giamba’s clothes today...long dresses that go from morning to the evening, stunning peacock coats, flashes of peacock green, elegant trousers and structured 1960s jackets. Somewhere in my childhood I had seen women look like that…now photographs torn at the corners, just before everybody went wild. It was nostalgic, beautiful, and in the days when women definitely changed for dinner and the cocktail trolley was in fashion. VIVIENNE WESTWOOD’s show looked like she had raided the toy box. Pamela Anderson wearing wings. And managing to look angelic. Scottish Highland music turned disco-night classical bop Bach, played to full effect. Cloaks, plaids, chiffon, tutus at an angle ready for the wedding jumble sale. Long rugby-like socks worn over patterned black tights. We really don’t need to buy any more clothes, because Vivienne has

found a solution: use imagination, pick out the worst thing in the wardrobe, and give it a funky beauty...but one drawback, you must be pretty, and skinny, because this look would be dreadful if you don’t have the vision to arrange properly. LANVIN is the one to go for if you want to look like an oldfashioned movie star, as I definitely do. I imagined myself in these 1950s black clothes, with feathers around my hairline, red lips, fur draped across my shoulders, high heels, with a low, dark, husky voice. An “I shall be in my trailer if you need me” sort of look. These are easy clothes for the chic chic, and our daughters can wear Vivienne Westwood. I want to be an old-fashioned sort of girl, in a black-and-white movie, a Hitchcock blonde. Just give me the lines. Everybody backstage looked ravishing...even the hairdressers and makeup artists. One story I must tell you about is how adorable Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz is: Once in the Dover Street Market, he may remember, he helped me get dressed—but not in his own clothes. He chose, without hesitation, a Daphne Guinness gold shirt for me and an Alaia suit with some fabulous platforms, so he was very fair to the competition. Traveling with Sophie Nails was quite something. She is boasting that you can get an Amy Winehouse hairdo at TOP SHOP for twenty-one pounds. MICHEL KLEIN showcased his Mad Max meets Disco Diva cyber ball Queen under magenta lights. Fabulous figurehugging, buttock-perfecting leather trousers with studs and jewels. Sexy, touchable quilting, with his unmistakable trademark, beautiful waisted shapes, giving the most imperfect woman an enviable, groovy uber-chick look. NINA RICCI and Olivier Theyskens put on quite a show! I have found my awards ceremony dress. Trends similar to the others: 1980 shoulders were back and tails in leather. Disco Queen, you had better get out there! I loved the platforms; I want to be a giant. Sequined pink platform booties, the gossamer wings of butterflies and dragonflies unfurled and flew into exquisitely formed delicious, wearable concoctions, mini skirts with organza trains, and beautiful encrusted, structured jackets. I want everything…purples, emeralds, reds, blacks This man is a genius…and I want to greet my Oscar swathed in all his creations. HOTEL COSTES was my lunch spot most days, a wonderful place for social coziness at the back by the fireplace, and where I met JENNIFER ROUSELET, who deals with the VIP of Paris for Moncler. Went off to my favorite corset store, CHANTAL THOMASS, full of delicate spring underwear, beautifully and amusingly constructed to give women the best shape possible…sexy, but not tarty. Caught Virginie Mouzat’s book launch at Louis Vuitton with Isobel Capece supporting yet another intellectual pursuit. She helped me when she was at Fendi to do a book launch for British Artists At Work. I so wanted to see Virginie and felt closer than she would have liked, having read the book!

genlux EDITOR AT LARGE

My summer tip: Shut up and dance! —George Blodwell Friends and fellow travelers on this magical journey, let’s make this a great summer. Let’s focus on life’s big, beautiful picture. Like an oil-painted master piece—a Rembrandt, for instance—one could get in close and view its bumps and imperfections, but why? It’s when we step back and view the whole painting that we become awestruck by its beauty. Your summer picks should start with the fabulously flowing Ferragamo piece. It’s perfect as a glamorous swim cover-up—or with some heels, belt it up and wear it for evening—the lion’s face is sure to start a conversation. The fuchsia Dior dress is a masterpiece in its cut and sophistication, and to take it over the top, throw on the Dior coat with decorative cuff and you’ll look simply stunning. The Prada black dress with its neck detail is so cool it doesn’t even need

accessorizing. The Dolce black dress is light and flirty and fun. My favorite skirt of the season with its nice waist detailing is by Jean Paul Gaultier. I was taken by the gorgeous crocodile-finished Elisabeth Weinstock chest—I love it! It has so many drawers and compartments for all of your keepsakes. Sandra Müller, a jeweler to watch, makes this rather special claw necklace attached to her signature chain that I encourage you to wear because everyone will ask about it. And finally, we all have a date that has meaning, so I added the novelty calendar necklace: you can choose your date and mark it with a sapphire stone in silver and yellow or rose gold. Cute! Need I say more… except enjoy the love, the summer, and dance!

Don’t FRET over summer just because it’s the dreaded bathing suit season. Instead, get fit with these tips from the pros, like my trainer Pauline Nordin. Jukari Fit to Fly is a “fullbody, interval-training workout that works cardio, strength [using body weight], core, flexibility, and balance. The machine resembles a large scale with a platform and produces mechanical vibrations that create instability, forcing the body to perform reflexive muscle actions many times each second. “I’ve never seen a fitness, rehabilitation and sports performance tool as profound as the Power Plate in the 13 years I have been a fitness professional,” says Acceleration owner and president Steve Jordan. “The results and benefits keep unfolding every day from client to client, ranging from weight loss, tone, better posture, and more energy to improved mind-muscle awareness.” No wonder celeb Power Plate users include Heidi Klum and Cindy Crawford—you can get your training done in just 10–15 minutes. DANCE CHICK

Take one look at Shoshanna Bush and you’d hardly peg her as the type to spend her spare time jetskiing and ziplining through the Mexican jungle. But the rising star from Northern California, who shows off her physical prowess as the lead in this summer’s Wayans brothers comedy Dance Flick, proves that looks can be deceiving. Here, we take a peek at her more fashionable side. How would you describe your personal style?

Eclectic—full of vintage and designer pieces. What’s your favorite item?

Nicole Miller jacket, $840, Nicole Miller, West Hollywood, 310-652-1629, nicolemiller.com BCBGMaxAzria Carly flared trouser, $148, bcbg.com Ippolita 18K couture diamond bouquet ring, $19,500, ippolita.com

Take risks and be fearless. No one is going to remember Abercrombie tank tops, but they’ll remember the eighties vintage belt with the big bow. If you could wear only one designer from head to toe, who would it be?

Marc Jacobs.

What’s your favorite low-price secret weapon store?

Kain pocket tee in charcoal, $88, Madison, LA, 323-651-3662 Cosabella Gretchen chemise, $134, Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills, 310-550-5900, neimanmarcus.com

It’s definitely Wasteland. It’s like treasure hunting—you never know what you’re going to get, but it’s always good. What’s your earliest fashion memory?

The first day of middle school I wore chunky lace-up black combat boots. I got made fun of by some of the kids, but smiled because I knew I came into sixth grade with a bang. What do you sleep in?

Sometimes a cute, slinky nightie or baggy sweats.

What kind of watch do you wear?

Cell phones are the new watches…although I would love to have a pocket watch. Who is your favorite fashion photographer?

Annie Leibovitz…because when she shoots you, you know you’ve made it! What’s your favorite scent, and why?

My favorite scent is my dad’s BBQ in the summer, but as far as wearing a scent, I’ll go with Lolita: H&M pink bag, $12.90, it’s sweet, and it’s fun to smell edible. H&M, West Hollywood, What’s your favorite vacation destination? 310-652-0721 I love Puerto Vallarta where I like to surf, ATV, skim board, jet ski, zipline through the jungle...great family trip memories there. It varies. I like to dress like the cities I wish I were in: one night it could be Parisian chic, the next East London edge, or LA casual in jeans and a T-shirt. If you could wear only one designer from head to toe, who would it be?

Clinique Even Better Makeup SPF15, foundation, $24.50, clinique.com

Topshop in London is my mecca! It’s incredible. What is your earliest fashion memory?

My mother’s pink lipstick, the glittery red Dorothy shoes my mother gave me, and Carnival in the streets of Lisbon when I was living there as a child. What kind of watch do you wear?

Yves Saint Laurent Charm link necklace, $950, net-aporter.com

Don’t do time, as it keeps trying to catch me out— that is, I find it restricting both physically and schedule-wise. Who are your favorite fashion photographers?

Helmut Newton, Ellen von Unwerth, James D. Kelly

What’s your favorite scent?

Helmut Newton’s Sumo, $150, June Newton Edition, Taschen, Beverly Hills, 310-274-4300 Confederacy, LA, 323-913-3040

Puppy breath—it’s the best smell in the world. What’s your favorite vacation destination?

South America. Love the madness and thirst for life of the people. I also like Africa for the beauty and its life-changing effect.

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

French Polynesia, and more specifically the islands of Tahiti. I’ve been to Papeete, Moorea, and Bora Bora. Bora Bora is my favorite. It’s so scenic and relaxing. It offers variety, and the air smells like the sweet, intoxicating tiare flower that blooms there. Do you overpack or underpack?

Packing is a big problem for me. I’ll bring a ball gown to the beach and fringed chaps to NYC. I’m so bad at thinking ahead that I just tend to “do the shove”—whatever I see in my closet I just shove What’s your go-to boutique in LA? into my suitcase. Eric Javits Squishee® bucket hat in acid gold, $170, ericjavits.com

Hat Trick A favorite of the jet set, accessories superstar Eric Javits knows what women want—By Tara Tyson

I

Eric Javits Squishee® Slouch hat in bark mix, $315, ericjavits.com

t’s the eternal question: What do women want?

Famed accessories designer Eric Javits has the answer. “I realized early on,” he says, “that more than anything, women want three things: comfort, practicality, and something that will last.” And Javits should know—he’s been in the fashion industry for 30 years. A Manhattan native and graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Javits got his start when, one night, he and a female friend planned a trip to Studio 54. Hoping they’d be stylish enough to get past the velvet rope, he fashioned his friend a pillbox hat made of strips of velvet and silk. They got in, and after continuing to make hats for his friend and sister to wear out on the town, Javits got into something bigger. Eric Javits Squishee® “Women were coming up to them to inquire Slouch hat, $315, about their hats. Before I knew it, I had made ericjavits.com enough to show them to store buyers.” In 1979, he and a schoolmate founded a hat and sportswear company, and in 1985, Javits struck out on his own. “Without planning it,” he says, “I found myself in business.” The summertime shoreline is a constant inspiration for Javits. “I love the beach,” he says, as we catch up with him on a chilly spring afternoon at his New York home. “The sunny resort lifestyle is deeply embedded in my DNA.” That makes sense, as stylish women from Southampton to South Korea consider his eponymous line of hats, shoes, and handbags a must-have for traveling light while still looking good in the sand and surf. Indeed, his best-known creation, the Squishee

110 GENLUX SUMMER / 2009

hat, epitomizes elegant summer headwear. In styles that range from the coy (the “Slouch”) to the cute (the “Bucket”) to the curious (the “Trek”), Javits’s hats offer an unmatched ease of maintenance thanks to a manmade material—Squishee—that he developed in 1995 to mimic the look of straw. He recognized the need for “straw sun hats that could be packed for travel without cracking or losing their shape,” he says, and he found the real stuff either “too dressy” or “so heavy that it frequently caused headaches.” Realizing that Squishee possessed characteristics “ideal for accessory construction,” he incorporated it into his bags and shoes. Nearly 15 years later, Javits’s Squishee is still going strong: This year, the Mini Squishee Star handbag is one of his most popular items. Of course, the jet set doesn’t stop traveling when the weather turns cold. So instead of turning to Squishee, they can stock up on Javits’s delightful fall-winter offerings, which include items made with Shenia, the cold-weather sibling of Squishee. And they have something else to look forward to, as the designer is considering a foray into jewelry and apparel for both women and men. But for now, with the dog days of summer still to come and Javits predicting that “glitz will be more refined,” we’re happy to top off a warm-weather ensemble with his favorite hat of the moment: the Durante, a flirty version of the classic fedora. After all, women also want that one magical accessory that will take an outfit from sweet to show-stopping. And Javits knows that, too. “Accessories,” he effuses, “have the power to transform.” Eric Javits Mini Squishee® Star shopper with gold-tone chain, protective brass feet, $300 each, ericjavits.com

GIVING M·A·C

In her new role as M·A·C Viva Glam spokeswoman, hip-hop diva Fergie lends her support to noted Los Angeles nonprofit Project Angel Food. By Francesca Forrester

t was my first time, and I was really embarrassed it was my first time, being from LA,” says Fergie. Considering the usual destinations of famous faces in Los Angeles, one might think that the Black Eyed Peas’ vivacious female vocalist, now focusing on her solo career, would be referring to Fred Segal or Chateau Marmont. But no, she’s talking about an entirely different kind of LA institution: Project Angel Food, a nonprofit founded in 1989 and devoted to providing nutritious meals to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses. It’s a bright spring afternoon, and Fergie is perched inside the sleek M·A·C store on Robertson Boulevard, where the sidewalk is packed with paparazzi who somehow got wind of her presence. She has just spent the morning visiting Project Angel Food’s Hollywood headquarters, where volunteers prepare hot and frozen meals in the organization’s main kitchen. “It was wonderful—they are so with it!” she exclaims. “Their kitchen is so clean. They’ve got all the freshest fruits and vegetables. I saw one girl slicing mushrooms paper-thin, just really putting care into it all.” Fergie’s trip to Project Angel Food is one of many such outings she will make as a spokeswoman for Viva Glam, M·A·C’s much-loved Lipstick and Lipglass collection, which donates every penny of proceeds to the M·A·C AIDS Fund to support people living with the disease. In her new role—she signed on to the position in February— she has already made eight stops, including to New York’s Safe Space, which works with at-risk youth and families, and the Harlem United Community AIDS Center.

112 GENLUX SUMMER / 2009

“You have to be outspoken in order to speak to young people or teenagers about sex and about condoms, and can’t feel squeamish about it,” Fergie says. “A lot of people who M·A·C has picked for this campaign are very outspoken and not very scared to speak their opinion, and that’s important for this.” Whether Viva Glam takes her to the boroughs of New York or the heart of Hollywood, Fergie has been reveling in the immersive nature of her role. “M·A·C makes sure I get to be hands-on with who we are working with, and that’s what I love about it,” she says, noting that one of the subjects she gets to broach with young women is “self-esteem and the fact that they don’t have to give it away so easily. “I like to talk about, ‘Well, are you sure you should be sexually active at all?’” she adds. “Of course we’re promoting safe sex and condoms, but abstinence as well, if you’re not ready mentally, or in a special relationship.” Despite her own front-and-center role, however, Fergie is quick to praise the behind-the-scenes efforts of volunteers who devote their time so selflessly to those in need. Reflecting on her visit to Project Angel Food, Fergie recalls one of the recipients of the nonprofit’s meals describing what the program meant to her. “She was saying, ‘It’s interesting that it’s called Project Angel Food, because these people are like real-life angels,’” she relates, smiling. “And it’s really true.” Viva Glam VI Lipglass in Warm Plum (frost), $14. Lizalde gold minidress, $140 The Lake and Stars Wild West teddy, $250

emember your first trip to a candy store? The rainbow colors, the sugary confections, the simple, innocent pleasure of it all—it’s a magic intertwined with the sweetness of youth. But even though you’ve probably forsaken the lollipops of childhood for healthy lunches at Real Food Daily, once you walk into Silver Lake’s Bittersweet Butterfly, you will definitely feel like a kid again. Except this time, you’ll be tempted not by gumballs and lemon drops, but by decadent lingerie and brilliantly colored flowers. Oh, and in the interest of full disclosure, there’s chocolate here, too. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Wang, it’s the kind of sparkly confection in which feminine hearts delight. Or the baby-blue “Wild West” teddy by Brooklyn’s The Lake & Stars—with garter straps and a delicate lace overlay, it’s ethereal and cheeky at the same time. But that’s just for starters. There’s also swimwear from local label Vitamin A, and there are loads of frilly underthings from Princesse Tam Tam, Stella McCartney, Myla, Undrest, Mimi Holliday and Damaris, among others. And on the way are Taryn Rose’s Bones and Roses line of silk charmeuse robes and wonderfully frou-frou pieces by Fifi Chachnil, renowned for her designs for Paris’s Moulin Rouge.

Bittersweet Butterfly owner Nina Warner came from a background in film production, working on music videos and movies like 1997’s Boogie Nights. A love of the arts runs in the family—Warner’s sister was a costumer on ABC’s stylish primetime soap “Desperate Housewives.” And in 2005, the two came up with what Warner calls a “daring” concept: lingerie and flowers together under one roof. With an irresistibly girlie idea like that, if you build it, LA’s fashion savvy will come—and they have, including Chloe Sevigny, Liv Tyler, and frequent visitor Christina Ricci.

And the flowers! Bittersweet Butterfly has the kind of blooms that will guarantee you’ll never buy flowers at the supermarket again. “I like to base my arrangements around unusual greens like chocolate geranium, safari, pittisporium, and baronia,” says Warner. “I love branchy things like apricot and cherry blossoms in the spring. I like to accent with surprising things like poppy and lotus pods. And for my hero flowers, I love parrot tulips, Singapore orchids, pin cushion, banksia, hybrid striped roses called Intuition, and wild flowers like delphinium.”

“I wanted a place that people could come to where they knew they could get a really special gift that they aren’t going to find anywhere else,” says Warner, who now runs the business on her own. “I look for things that are made really well, handcrafted, or made in small batches. … There has to be something different about it; there has to be some sort of detail that makes it stand out.”

But Bittersweet Butterfly is really about delighting all five senses, so even though your arms will already be laden with blossoms and bloomers, don’t walk out without a box of gourmet chocolates from LA’s own Intemperantia (appropriately named the Latin word for “self-indulgence”) or Valerie Confections (look out for the petite fours!).

Candy Colors

In the sizzling sun, you need eye-popping shades. —Dawn Shand Johnson Makeup artist Lucy Baldock-Sacchi, founder of Lucy B Cosmetics (lucybcosmetics.com), on how to wear bright colors in summer: “Bright colors look really fresh in summer because when we have more of a tan, we’re showing more bare skin. You need a sheer wash of bright color, as tanned skin mutes out colors. The flush of a fresh orange, red, or pink on the cheeks or lips looks young and very pretty. I’ve found that focusing on just one area with the bright wash of color works best. Try using green or blue on the eyes, and keep the rest of the face simple, using nude- or pinkynude-colored balms or glosses for your lips. You’ll look understated and beautiful.” Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Ransom, Flipside, and Graffiti, $16 each, Sephora, Hollywood & Highland, 323-462-6898; ulta.com

just-left-the-beach look, creating a soft, tousled, undone texture and providing medium hold and maximum volume. For your inner sun-seeker: This summer’s hot cuts, colors, treatments, and must-have products. —Dawn Shand Johnson Byron & Tracey Salon co-owner Byron Williams

How do you recommend getting “beachy” waves?

Keep the hair long and blunt—not quite a clean finish, but a more jagged look with cleaner lines. Messy-natural, beachy-wavy—that’s a cleaner look with the natural wave.

It depends on what kind of wave you have; you need to know your hair. Use a curling iron to create waves. No bone-straight hair. Use the curling iron here and there, then apply volume cream and volume spray all over; find your part, comb, air-dry, and pat with a towel. Air-drying will help achieve a more natural look.

How about color?

How can you protect your color in the sun?

on what’s hot for hair this summer

Blonde is the color, even with this economy. It’s a cheap way to look good. And it’s cheaper to spend money on your hair than on new clothes, because you wear your hair every day.

FOR BEACH-PERFECT SUMMER WAVES:

Fire up your Enzo Milano 25mm round curling iron. Grab a wide, flat section of the hair and lay it flat on the iron. Twist it around the barrel and hold for 10–15 seconds. Release the curls and slide the iron out. $135, Naimie’s Beauty Center, North Hollywood, 818-655-9933; enzomilano.com Bumble and Bumble Gel sculpting medium is flexible, brushable, and never sticky. $24, Rudy’s Barbershop, LA, 323-661-6535; Steam, LA, 323-966-0024 Eco-friendly and cruelty-free, David Babaii for Wildaid Bohemian Beach Spray. “Interest in cosmetic surgery procedures increases close to summer, and cosmetic surgery’s popularity and increasing affordability have made it a viable option for many who desire an attractive body shape. Women undergo liposuction to get thinner waistlines, hips, thighs, abdomen, and buttocks, as well as arms, knees, calves, the upper torso, neck, and under the chin. For men, this generally Dr. Forouzanpour means having a flat abdomen coupled with straight flanks on both sides. Popular nonsurgical summertime procedures include injectable products to provide fuller Sircuit Handlips and cheeks, smoother laugh lines, and some lavender less wrinkling of the face. Products used most body cream commonly include Juvederm, Restylane, and with shea Radiesse.” —Dr. Fardad Forouzanpour, Beverly butter, $36, Hills Cosmetic Surgical Group sircuitskin.com

GM Collin Body Firming Cream, $44, Visage, LA, 310-552-0667

What body treatments are popular for summer? Thermage is extremely popular; it uses radio frequency to tighten the collagen that you have, as well as to stimulate new collagen production. Over time, the area treated will be firmer and tighter. Thermage can be performed on virtually every body part, including the face, eyes, neck, abdomen, buttocks, thighs, knees, and arms, and it requires no downtime. It also has a cellulite-targeting procedure.

What new body treatments are available? Laser lipolysis is a popular treatment that uses laser energy to destroy fat cells instead of sucking them out like traditional liposuction, and the fat by-products are reabsorbed by the body and excreted naturally. Additional benefits include a tightening effect on the skin [because the laser’s heat energy stimulates collagen]. Ideally, laser lipolysis is performed on smaller areas of the body that do not have excessive amounts of fat. Time will tell if this popular procedure is effective or not. What products do you suggest for the body? Ayur-medic Intensive Zone Treatment Cream is formulated with peptides to promote the synthesis of collagen and fibronectin; it’s an excellent cream to use after Thermage. In addition, it has bearberry and licorice extract for lightening and combating inflammation. Also, I’m a big proponent of sunscreen. Years of chronic sun exposure, even in small amounts, really contribute to the aging process.

ost people like sugar, but for your health and skin, it is better to keep it on the outside! Consuming too much sugar can raise your blood sugar levels, which can lead to inflammation, oxidation, free-radical formation, and aging. However, sugar is an integral part of the Stratum Corneum natural moisture maintenance apparatus; it helps to attract and hold water in this superficial skin layer. Various types of scrubs have been designed using sugar to exfoliate the skin and polish it. The scrubs can vary in the size of the granules, scents, and associated moisturizers. This is a ‘sweet’ way to get rid of that old, dry, dead skin surface and provide a temporary glow.” —Garth Fisher M.D. ®, FACS, Plastic Surgery; Chair man and Co-founder, CellCeuticals ® Skin Care Inc., Beverly Hills, California

Genlux Out-of-Towner

As every woman knows, swimwear and lingerie are some of the hardest things to shop for. But what is less understood is why. Simply put, not all bathing suits or bras are created equal. Only the very best are designed with a genuine understanding of the architecture and movement of the body. Hence the reputation of Paris-based luxury swimwear and lingerie label Eres, founded in 1968 by Irène Leroux, who used ingenious cuts and innovative original materials to illustrate “the art of the body.” Today, the brand boasts 11 boutiques everywhere from Beverly Hills to Cannes and is led by artistic director Valérie Delafosse, who has had a lifelong love affair with the human form. Delafosse, who joined the firm in 2006, fits Eres like a glove: Passionate about ballet, choreography, musicals, and fashion, she studied at Paris’s Studio Berçot Fashion School under such greats as Thierry Mugler and Azzedine Alaïa. Before joining Eres, she left her mark on the swimwear and lingerie of Gap Body, Dior, Cacharel, and Chloé, and her first design project was Princesse Tam Tam, now one of lingerie’s most sought-after brands. Keep an eye out for her lovely new Eres collection, inspired in part by our very own eclectic LA neighborhood of Los Feliz. —Shannon L. Bowen ON AND OFF THE PLANE:

130 GENLUX SUMMER / 2009

What’s in your carry-on? The new Eres cashmere plaid, a book, and my computer. What’s on your iPod? 36,536 songs, but right at this moment, especially Michel Legrand, the French film composer. Reading material? Louis Aragon’s poetry and the Nancy Cunard biography [by Lois Gordon]. What are your packing essentials for LA? Chanel sunglasses, our new Eres sandals for day, a hat, versatile cocktail dresses, and a large Jérôme Dreyfuss bag. Also, really high heels—since you drive everywhere in LA, it is the time to indulge. What packing essentials do you recommend for friends visiting LA? All of the above and a few Eres swimsuits, since pool lounging in LA is the equivalent of a power lunch in New York. What is the first thing you do to unwind? Go to Venice Beach. There’s an amazing little vintage shop there that I can’t quite remember the name of. How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? Plug in my iPod, add a pink or reddish sarong to dim the lights for personal ambiance, and light some Eres almond candles. Red-eye or morning flight? Red-eye—it’s my only time to catch up on movies.

How do you look refreshed after a long flight? I use three drops of Sisley’s Radiant Immediate Lift Serum and Guerlain’s Super Aqua Day Cooling Facial Stick. What do you wish LA had more of that you have in Paris? I wish there were more bistros and bakeries. The ability to walk everywhere is also something I wish there was more of in LA. What do you wish Paris had that LA has? Obviously, the weather and Malibu beaches. I wish there was more nature close by, and that the people were more relaxed.
