GENLUX SAMIA ARSLANE EDITOR IN CHIEF

We couldn’t be prouder of our beautiful cover girl, Andie MacDowell. The star of Hallmark Channel’s Cedar Grove is more beautiful than ever—something she might attribute to being a L’Oréal spokesmodel and to using their products religiously. At 57, she looks simply flawless—so much so, that we decided to run her photos without retouching. Andie was extremely open in her interview with Genlux, and even shared something she says she’s never told anyone before. (p86) Also in this issue there are a couple of trends worth sharing. Though I’m usually not a fan of patterns, the Tribal trend has me longing for a few pieces—like the Zimmermann leopard print top. I love it! And what about the cool Tribalou collection design by Christian Louboutin? (p105) Who knew suede could be so fun to wear this time of year? Typically not thought of as a warm-weather basic, this soft material gets a cooled-down effect, thanks to an array of pastel colors. (p104)

To see my latest crushes, have a peek at my Editor’s Picks page. From the double-protection charm necklace by Sydney Evan (anyone close to me knows that I love a hamsa. I own a few, but I’m always looking for more) to the fancy ChercheMidi mini bag by Hermès. (p24) Mon coeur s’emballe! As we round the corner toward the Fourth of July, I’d like to express my gratitude to this beautiful country and the people I’ve met along the way. When I came to Los Angeles in 1997, I didn’t know what to expect or what I wanted to do with my life. All I knew was that I was home. In the City of Angels, I found my passion. I also made close friends and built a life for myself. A few days ago, right before my birthday, June 22nd, I became an American citizen. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Celebrating my birthday, Independence Day, and becoming a citizen. Congratulations to moi! Happy Fourth of July, everybody!

Elizabeth Hurley hosted the Genlux issue release party bearing her cover on March 12, 2015. She wore a figure-flattering white Christian Siriano dress that had everyone wondering how she continues to look amazing at 49. The night was also a celebration of her new show, The Royals, that Elizabeth was in town from London to promote. Guests wandered through the gorgeous and gigantic EVE BY EVE’S boutique before coming out to the large patio under the stars. Elegant crystal glasses full of Le Medaillon Champagne and vodka drinks by Svedka in great flavors like Vanilla and Mango Pineapple kept the crowd in good spirits, while delicious Hint Water kept them hydrated. The Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive’s superb catering team kept the delicious appetizers flowing. E! came out to interview Elizabeth inside the party as a throng of event shooters awaited their turn with her on the red carpet. DJ William provided the evening’s great sound. Sponsor of the evening was Margot McKinney, the Australian-based jeweler whose gorgeous, gorgeous (yes, it bears repeating) necklace is seen on the cover of the last issue of Genlux.

WAIT, ISN’T THAT THE MAN? Everywhere Jonathan Goldsmith goes, he’s recognized as the actor who portrays ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World’ in those zany Dos Equis beer commercials. 44 GENLUX SPRING/SUMMER 2015

He’s tHe man His sweat is the cure for the common cold. His pillow is cool on BOTH sides. He once won the Tour de France, but was disqualified for riding a unicycle. In museums, he’s allowed to touch the art. His passport requires no photograph. Chalk up these whacky tongue-in-cheek lines to Dos Equis’ brilliantly witty ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World’ ad campaign. Like a string of Henny Youngman zingers, they’re so absurdly clever, you just have to snicker. Maybe the most interesting fact about Jonathan Goldsmith, the actor who portrays The Most Interesting Man in the World, is that he’s really not Latino at all, but a nice Jewish boy from the Bronx—and that’s not a joke. ‘The man’ calls me from his home in Vermont, and shares how, but for his quick-thinking agent, he nearly lost the break of a lifetime. “I wasn’t right for the part,” Goldsmith admits in his gravelly voice. “The casting started with about 500 Latinolooking men and whittled down to 200, before ending with just three of us. My agent, Barbara, received a call from the ad agency saying that the Dos Equis people really liked me, but they wanted to go a little younger.” That could easily have been the end of the story. No commercials, no billboards, no residuals. (Imagine the residuals?) But Barbara saved the day by firing back with the fifteen golden words Goldsmith should tattoo on his right cheek: ‘HOW CAN THE MOST INTERESTING MAN IN THE WORLD BE YOUNG? IT TAKES LIFE EXPERIENCE.’

of his second campaign. Barbara and I stood in line for a 10-second photo op. When he saw me he actually said, ‘Hey, the most interesting man in the world!’ Then, a few years ago, I was Obama’s surprise guest at Camp David for his birthday. I sat next to him for a few meals and played all kinds of sporting events. And of course, I met Bo, his dog.” The third meeting came while Goldsmith toured the Oval Office with his friend, a White House photographer. “I’m looking around and my friend’s saying this is the president’s this or that and all of a sudden I feel some energy in the room and I hear someone say, “Hey man, how are you?” And there’s Barack Obama. We have a brief hug and he asks, “How’s Barbara?” and I say, ‘What are you doing here? And he says, ‘I work here.’ And then he gave me a pair of presidential cufflinks.”

Presidents take HIS birthday off.

And with that, the agency guy blinked. “You know what, Barbara, let me get right back to you,” he said. That was almost 10 years and a heck of a lotta commercials ago. Goldsmith, now a spry 76, and married to Barbara (she may not get the tattoo, but she got the man), describes his quiet digs. “I’m sitting in the den with a fire going. I’m looking at a clay vase that my stepmother made. In it are my father’s old paintbrushes that look like a bouquet of flowers. I have classical music playing in the background (‘O Mio Babbino Caro’). There’s a collection of my father’s old pipes on the table. Curled in front of the fireplace is Willie, my 150-pound dog. Out the front window, I can see there’s still snow on the mountains. It’s been really cold and I don’t know if I can take another winter here. I wouldn’t mind spending my winters in a bathing suit in a shack in the Dominican Republic. Honest to God.”

If there’s one thing about playing ‘The Man’ (forget the adoring public, shooting ads sandwiched between beautiful women, or meeting the president) Goldsmith is most grateful for, it’s spotlighting his favorite charities. He rattles off a few: “The Mines Advisory Group that helps people affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance. Hunger Free Vermont that provides school children with free hot lunches. The Stratton Foundation that helps communities in Vermont suffering poverty. Free Arts for Abused Children, started by Elda Ungar, that I’ve been involved with for about 40 years. It’s a group of artists who provide a non-threatening creative atmosphere for abused, neglected or impoverished kids. And there’s the Morris Animal Foundation that focuses on helping the health of animals through scientific discoveries.”

Sharks have a week dedicated to him.

Near the end of our interview, The Man asks me to hold on a second while he lights one of his father’s old pipes. He tells me the attorney who owned the local tobacco shop, and gave him this blend, recently passed away, so he’s feeling nostalgic. He slips into a reflective mood. “I’ve had an incredible life. I have a wonderful life…a wonderful life. I’m one lucky guy.” G

One cool perk of playing ‘The Man’ is the VIPs he gets to meet like, say, Michael Jordan, or the president of the United States, whom he’s encountered on three occasions. “I first met Barack Obama up in Burlington, Vermont, at the start

His organ donation card also lists his beard.

ANDIE MACDOWELL The phone rings and Andie MacDowell’s unmistakable voice—that sweet, lilting Southern drawl that we fell hard for in Sex, Lies and Videotape, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Groundhog Day, Bad Girls, Green Card, and Multiplicity, resonates across the line from Vancouver. She’s there filming Hallmark Channel’s first original-scripted primetime series, Cedar Cove (third season), and stars as Judge Olivia Lockhart. I break the news to Andie that her Genlux photos are so spectacular—so flawless—we’ve decided not to retouch them. I explain we’re going to run them ‘as is’—not a stitch of photoshopping. “Fantastic!” she fires back, surprisingly unfazed. “Some lines are kind of sexy. Some people say men get sexier with age, but so do women. The idea that men are allowed to get older, but women are not, is an old rule that’s being broken.” Broken, indeed. Andie certainly makes her own best case. Now 57, she looks nearly half her age. “I know I’m equal and as beautiful and sexy as any man my age,” she says convincingly. “There are a lot of women out there full of vibrancy. Take Jane Fonda. Can you find a man who looks as good as her at 77? I ran into Jane at Cannes. She was preparing to speak at an event that evening, and well, there she was, sitting on the ground like a 16-year-old, writing her own speech. Life’s about embracing your age and having fun— right where you’re at—not where you were before. Of course you’re not that any more. You’ve already been that.” Even in the beauty biz where young models dominate the landscape, Andie, who’s nearing her record 30th year as a spokeswoman for L’Oréal, is feeling her best years are the present. “There’s an empowerment to where I’m at now. I don’t feel inadequate or that youth dominates me in any way. I feel my experiences and knowledge are cards to my beauty. You get the whole package. Youth can only take you so far. I now have so much more to offer.” Andie also imparts some of her perennial beauty wisdom: Get a good night’s sleep (at least eight hours), eat organic (lots of fruits and vegetables), be active (ride bikes, takes long hikes, cross-country ski), moisturize (she’s always used L’Oréal Revitalift), and use lots of sunblock. The result? How about not requiring photoshop—even into your late fifties. Born Rosalie Anderson MacDowell (friends still call her Rose) in Gaffney, South Carolina, she opens up about her unhappy childhood. “My mother was an alcoholic, and my father left when I was only six. My mother was sweet and kind, but I had to take care of myself—and her—my whole life. She had a nervous breakdown right after I was born, and when she came back she started drinking. My childhood was

never truly a childhood. I’ve been an adult my entire life.” At 17, before heading off to college, Andie, forever the responsible one, staged an intervention for her mother at her uncle’s home...but sadly, it failed. Her mother simply would not get out of the car. “I’ve never told anyone this before,” Andie says, putting me on high alert. “My mother had shock treatments when she had the nervous breakdown after having me, so I think she was afraid of what was going to happen if she went inside that house. The doctor came down to the car and said if she didn’t get help, she would be dead in five years—and he was right.” In 1978, Andie signed with New York’s prestigious Elite Models. The famous one-name models like Esme and Iman were big at the time, but the name Rose was already taken, so the agency decided to call her Mac. Well, that lasted about three days. John Casablancas, the agency president, got wind of it commenting it sounded like a truck, and recrowned her Andie, and it stuck. With a new moniker and a new portfolio, Andie set off for Paris—and killed it. She worked every day—even weekends— and she loved it. But during this happiest of times, she would receive the saddest letter of her life. “Here’s the heartbreaker,” Andie warns me. “You really want to take out your heart and throw it against the wall? I got a letter from my mother.” Andie pauses, and I can hear her choking back tears, her voice thinning. “She wrote me a letter that said she’d stopped drinking. She quit drinking her last year and told me that she was so proud of me and that I didn’t deserve to have a mother who drank. I was so busy that year I didn’t get to see her. I didn’t go home for Thanksgiving because I was working…and then she died. I still have that letter. I never experienced her not drinking—that was the sad thing.” Andie’s relationship with her father was no easier. He remarried, and though Andie had desperately wanted him in her life, he wasn’t always available. Then, the year preceding his passing, he was placed in a care facility in Charlotte for dementia and Andie finally had the access she’d longed for. “It was amazing, and we connected and bonded like you couldn’t believe,” she says. “I can’t tell you how healing it was that year to go see him and sit with him and nurture and love him. >

“I do like a man who will open the door for me. But if you want me to open the door for you, if that’s what I have to do to get treated as worthy and as valuable, then yeah, I’ll open the door for you. I can still be feminine and equal, I don’t have to start dressing like a man to fight this battle. I can do it in heels.”

> I fed him and soothed him and comforted him. It healed everything that was broken inside of me. All the pain and hurt that I carried around melted away. More than any other gift I could have received, that was the one—because I wanted and needed and desired his love, but it was something I could never touch. There’s no greater power than being able to love someone like that. I used to be so afraid of the pain I would feel at his funeral, but when I went, there was no pain.” Now twice divorced, Andie has three children: Justin, 28, Rainey, 25, and Margaret, 25, with first husband, Paul Qualley. “I talk to my kids about changing and improving. They can improve on me. I let them know, ‘You have that option to make things better. To break patterns.’ And my children know everything about me. We just talk openly and don’t hide stuff. We’re connected in a really deep and beautiful way, and they’re allowed to be their true selves. It’s a constant healing process of changing how families work.” But if there’s one thing that gets this woman’s goat, it’s this: “I feel equal [to men] even though I’m not treated equal. I’m baffled and confused, because my soul knows women deserve to be on an equal playing field with men. I’m not going to live my life diminished.” Politics aside, Andie’s ready to rumble for women’s equality her way. “I do like a man who will open the door for me,” she admits. “But if you want me to open the door for you, if that’s what I have to do to get treated as worthy and as valuable, then yeah, I’ll open the door for you. I can still be feminine and equal, I don’t have to start dressing like a man to fight this battle. I can do it in heels.” When it comes to pitchin’ in, Andie’s all in. She’s been the national spokesperson for both The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and the American Heart Association. She also put two thousand acres of her Montana ranch in a conservation easement with the Montana Land Reliance (it’s now protected in perpetuity) and she’s also the quickest vetted board member of the National Forest Foundation. One game changer for Andie came during a visit to a shantytown church in Capetown, South Africa. There, she came face-to-face with severe poverty. Moved deeply, she put her 11,000-square-foot home on the market and downsized to 2,500. “What I saw there blew my mind. Utter poverty. Tears flowed like water out of my eyes—like someone turned on a faucet. My heart just kept breaking open and I had a transformation. I came home and just couldn’t live in that big house any more when the world existed in such poverty.” As we’re about to jump off the call, Andie pauses and asks if I want to hear the truth about why she sold the house. “The truth is I just didn’t want so many bathtubs. It made me sick to have so many bathtubs that weren’t being used. These people didn’t have a bathtub. I came back and no longer wanted stuff. I’m happier now with much, much less. On such a deep level, sometimes I have this Buddhist part of me that could be happy wearing a purple robe and holding a bowl,” she says, half-joking. “There’s that piece of me that could be really happy doing that.” G

I love this time in London and LA. I am happy in my London home, with the best view of the river. The Magnolia trees are blossoming and their petals are gently falling to the ground. Right now, I hear my wonderful friend Rushka Bergman’s laughter coming from an upstairs bedroom that overlooks the beautiful gardens of Cheyne Walk. She and I met in 1998. I had gone to have my photographs approved at V Magazine in New York, but they were all nudes and they wanted me to do fashion. I didn’t really get the concept of shooting only fashion then. I rang a friend who ran an artist’s agency there, and she invited me to her office to choose a stylist to work with. I went, and there I found, in amongst the ordinary middle-of-the-range stylists, an extraordinary one: Rushka. Her work was so inspiring. Old historic faces from the Middle Ages stared back at me—beautiful romantic photographs that she had worked on. I knew she was the girl for me, and I still I love the photographs we made together. They went on to appear in an exhibition called Peep with the Proud Galleries, and later on, they accompanied my poetry in Cloak and Dag ger Butterfly. I believe truly that Rushka Bergman did more for Balenciaga than Balenciaga. When I look at vintage Balenciaga I see matronly gowns and coming-out dresses. Rushka made the brand hip, as did the designers Nicholas and Andy. Truly, most of the big houses she celebrates in her huge wardrobe, she gives elegance and personality to. It was both Rushka and Isabella Blow who suggested I turn myself into a new version of Marilyn Monroe. Two of my best decisions: becoming more like Marilyn and becoming the fashion editor of Genlux magazine. I love the stunning designs of Hollywood’s heyday—the dream factory. Let’s bring that kind of glamour back. Chiffon ‘round the shoulders and feathers at every opportunity—made for the bedroom. As Diana Vreeland once said, “Style—all who have it share one thing: originality.” I like individuals with originality. People in Great Britain are famous for their individuality. After all, we all come from nothing and leave with nothing—so no sense being grey in between.

The Jimmy Choo collection, inspired by James Turrell

In May of 2013, thanks to Louis Vuitton, I had the distinct honor of attending the opening evening of ‘Akhob,’ the James Turrell light and space installation on the top floor of the Louis Vuitton boutique in The Shops at Crystals, Las Vegas. Meeting Mr. Turrell, and having the privilege of being one of the first people to go through the two light chambers—the 20-minute light show where I perceived a light-filled void of indeterminate dimension; then to dine and speak at length with Mr. Turrell, hear his views on light, space and his crater, was one of the most spiritual experiences of my life. This month, I found out that Jimmy Choo creative director Sandra Choi is just as big a James Turrell fan as I am…and has created an entire collection based on his dynamic installations. Ms. Choi believes that light, like shoes, has transformative powers. Case in point: how a nude shoe can lengthen a leg by illusion. She says, “I was inspired by the brightness and the way the light is projected. The key

was to keep the shoes simple and to form perspective with different tones and colors.” In Jimmy Choo’s Pre-Fall 2015 collection you can actually see how the light has inspired. Color-blocking, mirrored leathers—and cutouts used to create 3-D effects that captivate and essentially deceive the eye—pay homage to one of the most talented artists of our times.

Director Giuseppe Tornatore’s film classic Cinema Paradiso gets a makeover with the support of Dolce&Gabbana ARTIST’S TOUCH

Makeup artist Stephen Sollitto works his magic on Kate King for the big premiere

One of the highlights of AFI FEST 2014 was the world premiere screening of digitally restored Cinema Paradiso at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. The film’s director, Giuseppe Tornatore, attended the event to celebrate the remake of his famous film which won an Oscar ® for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990. The film’s new remastering was supported courtesy of Dolce&Gabbana.

Kate King, who appears in the latest commercial for Dolce&Gabbana’s female scent Dolce (also directed by Tornatore), attended the event wearing an ivory Dolce&Gabbana dress. Her gorgeous look was created by makeup artist Stephen Sollitto using Dolce&Gabbana beauty products. “Making Kate look pretty was simple because she has beautiful eyes and doesn’t need much to stand out,” said Stephen. “Along with the new Perfect Reveal Radiance Primer, an event necessity, I turned to shades of brown to emphasize her eyes.”

Casey Reinhardt is as sweet as they come. Besides juggling all aspects of her successful confectionary business with ease, this young dynamo finds sweet ways to give back

I eat, sleep, breathe Casey’s Cupcakes. I’m inspired by everything around me and I use those inspirations to create beautiful and delicious food. Like fashion, my cupcakes and their accessories are always keeping up with the trends.

What’s your passion?

What’s your favorite getaway?

Yachting with my family. We pick a new and different exotic location at different times of year. It’s such a special and luxurious getaway!

If you could have any other career, what would it be? I would love to

host a television show, such as a competition show or a cooking/lifestyle show like Martha Stewart. I love being in front of the camera and I love sharing my creativity! It’s still a must-do on my list! What’s one thing you’d like to change about yourself?

I’m a total perfectionist. I like when things are done a certain way, and I get very anxious when they aren’t. I wish I could just let go a little and let things work out the way they’re supposed to, because they usually do.

Who’s your hero?

My mother, Kelly Roberts. She’s such a brilliant, beautiful woman with the biggest, most loving heart. She has an infectious personality that’s so fun to be around. Not only an incredible mother to my brother and me, but she is a savvy businesswoman. I often seek her advice; she is the person I always turn to. What’s your biggest nightmare?

Losing the people I love the most. I know how precious life is and I’m so grateful for each day that I have with my family and friends. They’re the most important thing. What’s your favorite dream?

Turning Casey’s Cupcakes into an international brand with my boutiques all over the world!

GETAWAY CARMEL

GENLUXSHOP CARMEL VALLEY RANCH Nearby the charming Carmel-by-the-Sea, the newly remodeled Carmel Valley Ranch resort boasts 300 days of annual sunshine, and nearly 500 acres—the perfect California luxury oasis to renew and revive spirits, celebrate romance, or reunite with friends and family. —Cecilia High Tee The golf course’s high elevation creates dramatic views

MUST STAY:

The recently renovated Carmel Valley Ranch resort added 30 Great Outdoors indoor-outdoor guest suites The new suites’ outdoor and studios designed by living areas create a Rodrigo Vargas Design, with feeling of open serenity architectural design by SB Architects and The Paul Davis Partnership. Each intimate one-bedroom suite measures at least 700 square feet and offers a serene outdoor living area with stunning valley and vineyard views. They have concrete soaking tubs, indoor-outdoor fireplaces, and rustic-elegant furnishings. Bathrooms are fashioned with natural stones and woods, and offer glassenclosed stone mosaic showers. Every suite is pure, relaxing bliss.

MUST TASTE:

A bounty of dining options. Try breakfast at the Golf Clubhouse. Sweeping views of the course, indoor/outdoor seating options, and a friendly staff—all contribute to a relaxing meal. Ignacio’s Famous Slow-Toasted Granola with Farm Stand Fresh Fruit and Greek Yogurt will give you just the right amount of “umph” to hit the links. Meat-lovers will be especially pleased with The Lodge for dinner. The all-natural-raised beef selections hail from the farms of Scott and Kim English, Hercules Ranch and Thomas

108 GENLUX SPRING/SUMMER 2015

MUST TRY:

Are you into archery, bird watching, horseback riding, swimming, tennis, or wellness programs? There’s something fun and exciting for everyone. Here are a couple of standouts for my family: Golf: The 18-hole, par-70, Pete Dye-designed Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Course takes advantage of the area’s dramatic elevation changes. Located adjacent to the resort, it winds through vineyards, lavender fields, ponds and old-growth oak groves. Need clubs? The course rents a nice set of TaylorMade woods and irons for $75. Beekeeping: Check out the property’s twelve hives filled with more than 60,000 honey bees that keep the beautiful lavender plants lush. Visit in September and learn the ins and outs of beekeeping firsthand with the Honey Harvest Demonstration. Vineyard: New epicurean experiences showcase the resort’s four-acre pinot noir vineyard including a monthly winepairing dinner. Enjoy a gourmet dinner prepared before you in the Adventure Kitchen—featuring ingredients from the resort’s organic garden, local food sources, and wines from local makers.

Angus Ranch. A standout is the yummy Angus Block Cut New York Steak with Chef Tim Wood’s signature Truffle Fries and Wilted Garden Greens. Try the Butternut Squash Risotto served with Royal Trumpet Mushrooms, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Hazelnut Gremolata. Ready for dessert? Step outside to roast s’mores at the fire pits on the Lodge pool deck (complimentary from 5-9 pm, nightly). Grown-ups and kids alike gather around the fire to socialize while enjoying a perfectly gooey marshmallow and chocolate delight. It’s physically impossible to be unhappy while you’re eating s’mores. For more information go to carmelvalleyranch.com

MUST CHOW:

Work up an appetite strolling the quaint, hilly streets of Carmel and head over to Portabella. This storybook restaurant’s menu takes you on a gustatory tour of Italy, Southern France and Spain, complemented by a wine list offering an excellent selection of California varietals. General manager Luiz Ferreira is not only lively and charming, but suggests dishes that truly tantalize the taste buds. Start with the Porcini-Crusted Dayboat Scallops with bosc pear, seared in a Syrah essence (the most delicious scallops I’ve had). Main entrée items had me salivating with choices like Rack of Lamb Provencale served with herbs de Provence, pistachio persillade, and spinach whipped potatoes. The Côte de Veau is a grilled veal chop with a pink peppercorn sauce, served with cauliflower gratin and roasted potatoes that will satisfy even the heartiest of appetites. And the Paella Valenciana! Shellfish, chicken, chorizo, organic vegetables, simmered in a saffron rice—it definitely hit the spot! Here’s the hitch: the restaurant doesn’t have an actual address, but you’ll have no trouble finding it (on Ocean Avenue between Lincoln and Monte Verde) Carmel-by-the-Sea, 831-624-4395, portabellacarmel.com

MUST STOP:

If you’re taking Highway 1 North up to Carmel, be sure to stop off at Sebastian’s Store, located in San Simeon right across from Hearst Castle. This is, hands-down, the best place for burgers! Sebastian’s also hap-

pens to be connected to Hearst Castle winery...get where I’m going with this? Have a burger and a little wine tasting. Perfect afternoon! 442 Slo San Simeon Road, San Simeon, 805-927-3307

AND DRINK SOME MORE

Schramsberg is not only one of the best new world bubblies, it runs with the best from Champagne. We always keep a few bottles in our cellar. We’re drinking the 2002 Blanc de Blancs now. It is made in a dryer style, with fine bubbles, a creamy mousse, with low acidity and a nice yeasty back flavor. Schramsberg ages well and is a terrific bargain. Plus the folks at the winery are fantastic and their tour of the aging cave (literally a cave) is the highlight of any trip to Napa. —Jeff Lipsman

Trivia: Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs was poured at President Nixon’s 1972 “Toast to Peace” with China’s Premier Zhou Enlai, and since then, their bubblies have been served at official State functions by every U.S. presidential administration. This creation not only captures the spirit of everything that’s hot in the interior design world, it also perfectly illustrates my love of all things exotic, sexy, and of course, world-travelled. Eden Chandelier with Snake, limited-edition of eight, price upon request, exclusively at the Daum Showroom, NYC, 1-866289-3286

COOL DRINK To wash down that delicious meal or, indeed, wash away the stress of the day, the on-trend drink is an Aperol Spritz. This Italian classic is seeing a revival in fashionista bars and on glamorous

hotel terraces around the world. The slightly bitter taste is immediately surprising, and the spritz of soda creates the most refreshing of drinks! A true taste of summer.

My Nomad Fabric Collection I named my latest fabrics ‘Nomad’ in honor of the season’s trend. Color palettes of blues, saffron, burnt umber and berber grays have a distinctly African influence, and blend with tribal Indonesian patterns. They’re stone-washed for a soft-to-the-touch texture that looks patinaed and antiqued.

Nick Brandt’s On This Earth, A Shadow Falls I collect many things, but photographs trump all the others. The photographic artist du jour, and a must-have for any collector of beautiful imagery, is Nick Brandt. His latest show, Across the Ravaged Land, was shown at the Fahey Klein Gallery in LA to a sellout audience. His arresting images of wild beasts on the African plains beautifully posing against their majestic homelands are lustworthy. nickbrandt.com

My fragrance of the moment is Oud Wood, Tom Ford’s heady, sexy, unisex fragrance. The heart of its ingredients is the precious Oud oil. $215 - $525, tomford.com

‘Hollywood’ Haviland Collection by Martyn Lawrence Bullard It’s been my dream to collaborate with the iconic Haviland Limoges brand that’s been creating porcelain for presidents, royalty and the world’s glitterati since 1843. I’m happy to introduce my first design, ‘Hollywood.’ I best describe it as David Hicks goes to Africa, with a stay at the Mamounia Hotel on the way! It’s a sort of 60s-geometric design mixed with tribal motifs. It’s modern and chic while retaining a timelessness. Layer it with everyday white China or dramatic black accessories. I designed it with my ethos in mind: ‘Never save anything for best, as today is your best and tomorrow will be even better.’ So use everything you own every day. Enjoy it, live with it and love it. TIME MACHINE This is the ultimate nomadic bucket list trip—a Cottar’s 1920s Safari camp. The unrivaled luxury of these beautifully appointed camps, complete with antique furniture, four-poster beds, hip baths and hundreds of yards of muslin tenting, is truly like traveling back in time. Gone are the days of hunting parties—now the only shooting is from your camera. The sheer beauty of the African plains, and witnessing the animals in their natural habitat, will haunt you forever. Experience life-altering emotions and beauty everywhere you look. This is a must-experience vacation. Cottar’s Safari Service: Cottar’s 1920s Camp, cottars.com

Hippy Chic The Saint Laurent spring/summer collection is spiced up with the most exotic array of embroideries and nomadic draperies. The menswear collection has a district Moroccan flavor mixed with African motifs and a real hippy chic vibe. Layers, beads, brocades, and leather-lace sandals—perfect for a stroll through the souk or a shopping safari on Rodeo Drive! Saint Laurent, Beverly Hills, 310-271-4110

Tucked away in a corner of Beverly Hills’ Golden Triangle, Il Forno Caldo is our go-to Italian restaurant. With fantastic food, cozy ambiance, attentive service, and fair prices, this place deserves the Zagat recommendations displayed on its walls. Favorites are the Ribeye Steak in mushroom and port wine sauce, or the Chicken in Cognac Sauce. Want to dine light? Try the Beverly Hills Salad with organic baby mixed greens, fresh strawberries, breast of chicken and walnuts, or the Buratta Cheese Bruchetta. PRIME TIME Located just steps from Rodeo Drive, Ocean Prime creates an extraordinary dining experience serving the freshest seafood, prime steaks, handcrafted cocktails and world-class wines in an atmosphere that is chic and sophisticated. There’s a variety of seating areas to choose from— heated romantic outdoors, upscale sports bar, elegant indoor dining—to guarantee the perfect gastronomic ambiance. This Beverly Hills hot spot has quickly become the happy-hour hangout of choice for agents, locals, and retailers. I love a good Crisp Wedge of Iceberg salad before devouring a steak, and this salad fit the bill! With smoked bacon, sweet

grape tomatoes, just the right amount of red onion, and that bleu cheese Cabernet buttermilk dressing, I was in heaven! Next, Filet Mignon with Black Truffle Butter. Yes, it was amazing. Paired with the traditional creamed spinach, sautéed button mushrooms, and indulgent twice-baked potatoes, this is a meal not be forgotten any time soon.

Women love Brian Atwood. And there’s no shortage of international lust for his luxury heels—guaranteed seductive, fun, fearless, and all woman. The Chicago-born designer became fascinated with his mother’s closet at an early age. He studied at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology before moving to Europe to pursue a prolific seven-year career as a runway model. In his free time he would sketch ideas and inspiration for a new, progressive fashion footwear line. ¶ While in Milan, Brian was discovered by Gianni Versace, who hired him to work at his fashion house in 1996. At Versace, he was the head designer of accessories, where he mastered the intricacies of footwear design. He went on to become creative director of Swiss brand Bally from 2007 to 2009. ¶ But he wanted to do more with all those sketches. In 2001 he launched Brian Atwood the brand, with collections that are globally coveted for exquisite craftsmanship and hyperluxe design and detail. He continues to expand his line to include chic handbags and a contemporary collection, B Brian Atwood. ¶ Brian is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and has been honored with the CFDA Swarovski Perry Ellis Award for Best Accessory Design and the Footwear News “Designer of the Year” Award. B Brian Atwood was awarded “Launch of the Year” by Footwear News in 2011. He also continues to combine his love of art and fashion with a series of innovative film collaborations. ¶ Brian is loved by fashion industry insiders and Hollywood celebrities alike, so when he visits LA he’s sure to feel right at home. –Courtney Fortune
