STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Karl Lagerfeld, who considered himself European (his father was Swiss, but Karl was born in Germany and lived in France), was the world’s most famous and prolific designer of our time. He invented his caricature look with his sunglasses, powdered ponytail, black jeans, fingerless gloves, black fitted jacket, and starched collars. He attributed his success to never being satisfied and never looking back. Though he grew up wanting to be a cartoonist or illustrator, Karl’s career path started in 1954 when he entered the International Wool Secretariat fashion competition and won the coat category. It changed the world for Karl, who didn’t know he could make a living in fashion. He apprenticed under Pierre Balmain for three years until he left for Jean Patou, where he stayed for five. He then freelanced for Krizia, Ballantyne, Charles Jourdan, Valentino, and Chloé, where he remained for over ten years. His many decades-long stints at CHANEL and FENDI would solidify his position as fashion’s most enduring designer. He approached his work and dictatorial design process philosophically. He was decisive and made no excuses for being unwaveringly resolute in his process. Karl would often say, “Every decision is a final refusal,” an axiom he would, perhaps mistakenly, attribute to Baruch Spinoza.

16 GENLUX SPRING 2019

Karl also enjoyed retelling the story of Lady Mendle, the interior designer who authored T he House of Good Taste. The story goes that when presenting ideas to Henry Clay Frick, she offered only one design concept. When Frick inquired about a second, she said, “No second options.” The notion that if you are hiring the best to design for you and you trust their judgment implicitly, therefore, why, in God’s divine plan, would there be a need for a second option? For Karl, this philosophy was embraced by both FENDI and CHANEL. Karl worked tirelessly on 14 collections per year and loved his position, where he was dedicated to design and design only. The other duties were handed off to experts whom he appreciated greatly, and he especially didn’t like to speak about marketing. “We aren’t selling cars,” Karl once said. He also didn’t allow his customers to dictate his design. “I don’t think about consumers. Don’t flatter other people’s taste.” He appreciated the support that the brands gave to his design; regardless of his demands, they bent to his whims. Take, for example, the elaborate and immensely costly transformations of the Grand Palais for his CHANEL fashion shows. Karl lived alone in his Left Bank apartment, save for a Birman cat named Choupette—known famously for her diamond necklaces, a personal maid, her travels on private jets, and her Instagram account. Today, as the models held back tears on their last walk in a Karl Lagerfeld-for -CHANEL fashion show, reality set in that Karl wouldn’t be coming out to take a final bow. Farewell, Mr. Lagerfeld, may you rest in peace.

ILLUSTRATION: STEPHEN KAMIFUJI

Today was Karl’s last show for CHANEL. The king of fashion is gone. The genius who designed for CHANEL since 1982, FENDI since 1965, and his eponymous collection since 1984, died on February 19th. He was 85.

At first sight, it’s hard to take Ivy Levan seriously as a singer. She’s got a model-gorgeous face and a nearly six-foot-size-two-frame, all of which calls for a certain degree of skepticism. However, once she opens her mouth, and you hear her soulful voice, all bets are off. She’s the complete package, delivering a rich, clear and powerful performance. Want proof? Google ‘Ivy Levan Drive My Car,’ and catch her mesmerizing duet with Sting, or watch her music video for Her, one of the five solid tracks off of her new EP, FUCC IT. The album showcases her strong, convincing, I-will-hurt-you vocals. —SK

BRING ON THE CAVALLARI One of reality television’s original frenemies is back! Kristin Cavallari is executive producer of her own show, Very Cavallari, on E! Here, the New York Times best-selling author and entrepreneur chats with our COURTNEY FORTUNE about her life after Orange County.

A

lot has changed since Kristin Cavallari lit up our small screens on Laguna Beach and The Hills. With three small children, a successful fashion brand and a New York Times best-seller, the once-iconic TV frenemy has been keeping very busy. And once again we are welcomed into her world as it unfolds on season 2 of her E! show Very Cavallari, which captures the drama of married life and the daily grind of running a busy lifestyle brand. When I caught up with Kristin at her Nashville home (did I mention she has a farm now?), I had to ask what inspired her return to reality TV. "Originally the show was not supposed to be about my life at all, and I had planned for it to really just focus on my jewelry line, Uncommon James. I saw it as an opportunity to showcase the brand." But soon, she came around to the idea of sharing her life with viewers again, including reservations of course: "I have a family to think about now. I need to do what's best for them." But ultimately the idea was too tempting to pass up, and she invited cameras into the couple's Nashville estate, to follow her every-day life with husband, former NFL quarterback, Jay Cutler. We also see tensions arise behind the scenes of Uncommon James' shiny exterior. Navigating married life, mom duties and running a multifaceted business is complicated on its own, but throw in a TV crew following your every move and things can get dicey fast. Kristin takes it all in stride. After all, she's done this before. "I don't sugarcoat things, and it's not always perfect, but I have nothing to hide, and at the end of the day, for Jay and I, it's just about having open communication about our marriage. There are no hidden cameras; we put it all out there." When asked about her experience filming Very Cavallari and how it differs from her time on Laguna Beach and The Hills, Kristin describes the freedom she feels being the executive producer of her show. "I love being on that side of it; there's a security in knowing that I'm in control. Everything you see on the show is real because we're the ones deciding what

happens next." A very different story from the manipulation and plot-weaving reportedly endured in the past. As she reflects on her days as a teenager growing up in the spotlight, Kristin says she wishes that she could tell her younger self to enjoy the moment more. "I wouldn't have worried about the future so much," she says. "There are a lot of moments I'm not proud of, and a lot of moments that don't represent who I am, but everything I went through on those shows made me look inward and turned me into the woman I am today. So it was all worth it." And that woman now has a new outlook and trajectory. Her focus is on family and the Uncommon James brand. The launch of Little James is particularly meaningful because both she and her kids are inspired and excited by every piece in the collection. "Uncommon James is in a great place; I'm learning a lot of things as I go along, and I get to know and take pride in the process. I'm very confident with the direction." For Kristin, the brand represents the modern woman and a woman who wears many hats, like herself. She aims to choose pieces that are effortless, which can be thrown on and instantly stylish. It's also important to her that her collections are affordable and accessible to everyone. Looking ahead, Kristin is excited for the evolution of her businesses and continuing the journey as an accomplished author. Her book, Balancing In Heels: My Journey to Health, Happiness, and Making it all Work, earned her a spot on the New York Times Best Seller list. And the follow-up, True Roots: A Mindful Kitchen with More Than 100 Recipes Free of Gluten, Dairy, and Refined Sugar, has been met with acclaim. She has goals to expand her philanthropic reach to the issues she cares about most, including wellness assistance for young children. But for now, Kristin is gearing up for Season 2 of Very Cavallari which she reveals, "Gets much more personal, and you see a lot more of my life outside the office." Reportedly, heads will roll on episode one, like any good premier, and we get to see the dynamics shift at home and in her marriage. From there, we will have to watch to see how things develop. But whatever happens next for Kristin, we will all stay tuned. G

KIRK+KELLY REVISITED In the late s, you couldn’t peruse

a fashion magazine without seeing Neil Kirk’s brilliant photos of Kelly Gray in those ads for St. John—the iconic brand founded by her parents. Today, the California-based beauty has a new luxury fashion firm, Grayse. Here, GENLUX pairs the dynamic duo for round two.

54 GENLUX SPRING 2019

D

uring the 90s, one couldn't pick up a fashion magazine without seeing blonde beauty Kelly Gray, the face of St. John, sandwiched between a crew of manly models. Never mind that she was the daughter of Robert and Marie Gray, who founded St. John in 1962, the ads worked and helped propel the brand through the stratosphere. The images, shot in exotic locations around the world, were through the lens of photographer Neil Kirk, one of fashion's finest shooters. But Kelly wasn't just a pretty face; she was also smart and talented enough to be named the president of St. John in 1996. At only 29, she was the youngest president on the New York Stock Exchange. Kelly and Neil worked together up until 2005 when the company was sold to a private equity firm, and Gisele Bündchen became the new face. "The last shoot we did for St. John was in Scotland at the Downton Abbey house where we had the Scottish rock star campaign," Kelly remembers. "We had picnic blankets and bottles of Jack Daniels. Thinking back, we did make it look like a rockstar photo shoot. I had a guitar strapped to my back but didn't realize how heavy it was and fell right off the amp. You'll see shots of me with just my feet in the air." Since those St. John days, Kelly launched a fashion partnership, Royal Underground, with Mötley Crüe guitarist Nikki Sixx; now, she has a new brand, Grayse (pronounced grace), that she started with her mom. For our Genlux shoot, Neil Kirk flew out from London, and the image-making chemistry was still there. "It's funny, but I enjoyed being in front of the camera this time of my life," Kelly says, "During the St. John shoots, 90 percent of the time I would have a panic attack before, and I'd be sweating during the shoots."

Here, Kelly answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire: Describe yourself: In a few words, I would say I'm complicated, decadent, agile, sexy, intense. I'm more Freddy Mercury than Elon Musk. Your breakfast? I didn't have breakfast; I only eat when I'm hungry. Diet regimen? I'm on a program where I'm either fasting or eating off the fat of the lamb. I was extraordinarily sedentary and was having difficulty feeling joy or pleasure. I guess what you call clinically depressed. Scott Jansen was my trainer back in the St. John days. He recently launched his new 'Fast. Eat. Live. System,' so I tried it. It gave me the breath of life. In four months, I lost 40 pounds, but it only took me four days to rewire my brain and see the world as a positive place. So I have to give Scott a shout-out for that transformation. His website is ignitestoredenergy.com. I'm active, and I'm dancing again. The athlete in me is waking up, although I'm not sure she was ever there...poor thing. First job? I was 12 and worked as a receptionist at St. John Knits during summer vacation. I answered the phone and did payroll. My parents were very adamant about me having a strong work ethic. Coincidentally, I remember we had 333 employees, and I made the minimum wage of $3.33. Your charity? I firmly believe in second chances, so I volunteer at maximum security prisons as a life coach. I've been to California City Prison, Lancaster, Richard J. Donovan in San Diego, and Singh Singh in New York. On the other end of the spectrum, I fundraise for DADA, the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. It's a dance school for underprivileged kids. Giving kids a chance is a fulfillment I've not found in other work. Character change? I wish I had more patience.

Biggest risk? Starting my brand after being part of a half-billiondollar business. I'm going against the trend of the world and following my heart, which is always a risk in business or life. Wall Street measures your business as to how scalable it is, but I gauge it from how many compliments my customer received while wearing Grayse. Early dues? At St. John, my father said we had to outperform everyone around us by double. We had to be smarter, faster, and work longer hours. The day I was named the president, the stock dropped 20 points. I had a dozen interviews for that job and had to convince a room full of analysts that I was qualified. Childhood bullying? Oh, gosh, I was bullied for everything! My parents dressed me in little St. John, which wasn't popular in Newport Beach in the 70s. I was like a very small adult, so it was very difficult for me to relate to children and to make friends. I did not want to be a loner, but I was extremely unpopular and didn't socialize well. I could handle an adult cocktail party with no degree of difficulty, but the school playground was like a war zone for me. I truly believe the core of my strength is the degree of difficulty that childhood was for me. It's directly proportionate to how much strength I have today as an adult. Physical change? Well, I'm naturally muscular with an athletic build. I always wanted to be lean and waify like Kate Moss. First heartbreak? Truthfully, it was my first husband. I married my first love. We met in our early 20s and married when we were 28. He was a musician who was not cut out for marriage. He left me quite heartbroken. What's next? I was to take Grayse international. We have interest from Germany. I'd like to see what the temperature is for our brand in Europe. It may be time for us to venture back out to the international waters. G

arly Steel zips up to our breakfast meeting spot in West Hollywood aboard her trusty steed, a Jamis Explorer 18-speed bicycle. "I don't drive," the two-time Emmy-winning television personality shares over avocado toast and water infused with chlorophyll. "I never have, though this year, I am going to learn." Today, the saucer-eyed interviewer agrees to be the interviewee. She has a distractingly flawless milky complexion—one she credits to Natura Bissé skincare. "And no, they don't gift me," she swiftly appends. "They're the only ones who don't." On her five-foot-eight-inch frame, she's wearing a black top by the Italian brand Amen. "I have a geeky story why I'm wearing this," Carly confesses. "I saw Taylor Swift with one of their sweatshirts on DailyMail.com, clicked on the ‘Shop the Look' link to Farfetch, and bought it!" A black, oversized tuxedo jacket by BCBG and some Wolford leggings, also black, complete her ensemble. "And I'm doing APM Monaco earrings," she adds, "I only have one hole in each ear, so I love to wear ear collars to make me look cooler than I actually am." Carly is pretty darn cool these days—spanning the globe for various celeb interviews or hanging with chums like Mariah Carey or Rebel Wilson. However, as she also reveals, it wasn't always so. "I was raised in Scotland and when I turned 10, everything fell apart," she says, "It was a rough time for me. I did well academically, but I wasn't one of the cool kids. I looked awful, and no one wanted to be my friend." She did have one friend, a Pakistani student named Saira. "She wasn't cool either," Carly says, "So every lunchtime for three years, we would hide up in the attic where the art studio was. We had a lot of fun and made the best of it. But there is one thing that I regret." Carly grew up in Lanarkshire, Scotland, the only child to parents who were also only children. Her father, an architect, and her mom, a teacher, taught Carly how to study for exams. At only 20, she earned a law degree with first honors from England's Durham University. In high school, Carly embraced movies like She's All That, Never Been Kissed, and she enjoyed reading Francine Pascal's Sweet Valley High novels. "I saw Americans as being so cool and really wanted to move to America. I dreamed of being like Alicia Silverstone in Clueless or a sorority girl riding in the back of a Jeep Wrangler with the football team headed to the beach." The summer before Carly's last year in high school, she was determined to cement those dreams. "I knew what I had to do to be with the fun girls, so I gave myself a makeover," she says, "My mom took me to the Elizabeth Arden counter to learn to do makeup. I straightened my hair, had my ears pierced, changed

my clothes and accessories to be like Lauren—the coolest girl at school. I copied her style. I think that's where I learned to be a chameleon. I also developed my sense of humor when I wasn't cool. When I would make fun of myself first, then it would diffuse them laughing at me." Carly's plan worked. "I slowly infiltrated," Carly explains. "I was very nonchalant about it, when inside, I was so excited. I remember one of the girls, whose father was a famous Scottish television presenter, invited me to a concert, and my mom thought it was really cool that I was friends with the daughter. I remember gaining that sense of achievement because I've lived to please my parents." Those same mean girls that Carly felt isolated from and who called her ugly were now her friends. "How twisted is that," Carly realizes. "Now, I know better. But at the time, it was an insecurity thing." Perhaps worse was what happened to Saira. "Something I do regret was when I did get in that group, they made fun of the girl that I left behind. Maybe she's forgotten?" It's hard to imagine, but Carly was also painfully shy. "I wouldn't even want to go into stores with my mom because if the sales associate asked me a question, I would die!" she exclaims, "Ironically, now, because now I accost people as a skill." These days, it seems like Carly is friends with everyone. "Oh, I have enemies," she says, quick to name one, "like Jake Gyllenhaal. I interviewed Jake and Amy Adams for Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals. Tom Ford had given this big interview about how he didn't make Jake manscape. Now normally, I wouldn't be talking about manscaping, but the thing with a Tom Ford film is the aesthetic is almost as significant a talking point as the content—that's what Tom's about. Jake and Amy began talking about how they were on these extreme diets, so I brought up manscaping. It was meant to be a funny thing, but Jake got annoyed, and his response was, 'Really, Carly? Is this the quality of questioning that we are at now? Manscaping? Really?' And he freaked out and his publicist, who I really like, came flying out and said this is a disaster, and I had to leave the room with my tail between my legs and sit in the corner with my head held in shame. Needless to say, by the time we got the tape back that part was edited out." Our conversation shifts to animal hair—something Carly is highly allergic to—save for her hypoallergenic white Siberian cat named Khaleesi. "I was putting her in my Instagram photos a lot," she says, "but my friend Marissa said, ‘You gotta reign in the cat thing.' I don't care, because the ancient Egyptians worshipped cats and Taylor's brought back that cats are cool and so much more interesting than dogs. They're soulful and don't give their affection away easily. And they play hard to get." "Oh, so you mean they're a lot like you?" I ask, jokingly. "Yeah, pretty much," she says. G

CHANEL FALL-WINTER 2018/19 HAUTE COUTURE

By now, you all know that Lady Gaga collected her well-deserved Best Original Song Oscar for Shallow. She also owned that alluring onstage moment with Bradley Cooper, wearing a long puffball dress by Brandon Maxwell—it was a moment of our dreams. One swish of Hollywood’s fairy wand and they create magic where one can walk the red carpet, collect a few kudos, and fall in love with...well, Bradley Cooper. Not to sound jaded, but it does translate to millions more at the box office. I recently had a whirlwind trip from my home in London to Frieze LA—quite possibly the most impressive art fair in LA that I have ever witnessed. It was exciting, colorful, and full of interesting guests where I was pleased to give my new Givenchy coat an airing. I saw works by friends Tracey Emin and Duggie Fields, while also bumping into old friends such as decorator Martyn Lawrence Bullard and filmmaker Ronnie Sassoon. While in LA, I found a fabulous Libertine coat with a dazzling Japanese design at Maxfield—a shop that still thrills me. I wore it to the Beverly Hills Hotel for drinks and to catch up with art curator and gallerist Anita Zabludowicz and the artistic head of the Serpentine Gallery in London, Hans Ulbricht. I love glamour and positivity, and Los Angeles has it all. I am now back in London and have spent the evening laughing and enjoying the “Double Fake” show by artist Alison Jackson where I snuggled up to a fake Donald Trump in my very sexy Alexander Vaulthier dress, just what I needed.

GENLUX THREE VIP TREATMENTS Spring clean your skin with my favorite in-office skin treatments to reveal a vibrant and youthful you! —Nina B.

1. HydraFacial exfoliates away dry, dead layers of skin at the surface, instantly taking your complexion from dull to glowing. It’s safe and gentle on all skin types, including those with sensitive skin. It loosens dirt and skin debris with an acid peel that leaves no irritation. Extracts pores by vortex suction, leaving skin fresh and decongested. A HydraFacial treatment nourishes, protects and hydrates your skin with antioxidants, Hyaluronic Acid, and Peptides. An excellent treatment right before a big event to look your absolute best or have HydraFacials regularly as part of your new healthy skin care routine. Benefits of HydraFacial: Improves dehydration, rosacea, fine lines, congested and enlarged pores, oily or acneprone skin, hyperpigmentation.

2. Clear + Brilliant is a noninvasive dioxide laser that refreshes your skin from the inside out. It requires little recovery time, and the risk of complications is low. Any post-procedural swelling and redness disappear after a day or two. The treated area might also feel rough, but this goes away after five days. Clear + Brilliant offers two options: One reduces pore size, diminishes fine lines and improves skin texture; the other treats pigmentation. A single treatment improves skin appearance. Benefits of Clear + Brilliant: Encourages new collagen growth, evens skin tone, smooths texture, and shrinks pores.

3. Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenating procedure, also called collagen inducing therapy. When small structures of the epidermis and dermis are damaged, acne scars and fine lines become more apparent. For the skin to have a smooth texture, the collagen needs to be remodeled. The pen-like tool with fine needles causes controlled micro-injuries which stimulates the growth of collagen and elastin. The result is smooth, flawless, and youthful-looking skin. After a single treatment, you’ll start to see an improvement in your complexion; however, multiple treatments are suggested to achieve the ultimate result. Benefits of Microneedling: Treats and improves conditions like acne scarring, fine lines, and deeper wrinkles, loose skin, texture irregularities, hyperpigmentation, and pore size.

These are three great in-office treatments that will bring your skin back to life. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me on Instagram @ninaBskin. I’m here to bring out your best glowing skin!

GIVING HEARTS

Philanthropists Christine and Dr. Gabriel Chiu Join The Prince of Wales to Open The Prince’s Foundation Chiu Integrated Health Programme at Dumfries House.

CHRISTINE AND DR. GABRIEL CHIU WITH PRINCE CHARLES

Philanthropists Christine Chiu and Dr. Gabriel Chiu, founders of Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Inc. and the Anti-Aging Institute of Regenerative Medicine in Beverly Hills, are passionate in the areas of health, human services, and the arts. The couple’s contribution to the Dumfries House marks their first major philanthropic endeavor in the U.K. The health center’s east and west treatment lodges are named Gabriel Christian Chiu III after their six-month-old son. “He will one day realize the importance of giving,” say his parents; “both the duty and the pleasure of enriching others’ lives for the betterment of our collective future.” The Dumfries House project will provide holistic health and wellbeing services to nearby areas—one of the most deprived and underserved regions, and it demonstrates the Chiu family’s longstanding commitment to health causes and their support of The Prince’s Foundation. “We are humbled to support HRH Prince Charles’s passion for revitaliz-

ing and uniting communities through the Centre,” says Christine. “The collaboration of Eastern therapies with traditional (Western) medicine in addressing physical and emotional health reflects the core purpose of The Prince’s Foundation: to champion and celebrate the most important part of any community: its people. We find no greater honor than to infect health and happiness.” “I believe that there is a place for alternative medicine and treatments alongside traditional medicine,” adds Dr. Gabriel Chiu. “So when Prince Charles invited us to become involved with his vision at Dumfries House, it was a very compelling opportunity to not only help the community but to see how much good could be achieved with the full arsenal of traditional, holistic, herbal, homeopathic, and naturopathic medicines and therapies. We hope that it will be a model for future medical integration throughout the world.” For more infor mation about Dumfries House, visit dumfries-house.org.uk CHRISTINE AND DR. NURSE JAMIE GETTING FACIAL TREATMENT WITH HER ‘UPLIFT FACIAL MASSAGING BEAUTY ROLLER’ FROM DAUGHTER MADLY, ONE OF HER TRIPLETS.

AGAINST ALL ODDS

She goes by the name of Nurse Jamie. Those in Hollywood know her as the superhero who turns back time. She’s at the top of her game, both at work and at home to her triplets. Statistically, the odds of giving birth to triplets is one in a thousand. Reaching the top of the celebrity skincare game might require even greater odds. Nurse Jamie can successfully check off both. So, when LA’s it girls like Khloé Kardashian, Jessica Alba, or Olivia Culpo, want to look their best, their go-to skincare expert is Nurse Jamie—the registered nurse and owner of Beauty Park Medical Spa in Santa Monica, who, like a human time machine, reverses their signs of aging. Nurse Jamie credits her success to her artistry, understanding her client’s needs, and being knowledgable about the science behind each of her modalities. That’s why many consider her the master of the injectable facelift—a combination of dermal fillers and paralytics. CME Scholar/Allergan tapped her to educate other professionals on the latest innovations and techniques for Botox and Juvederm. “I’m also passionate about lasers,” Nurse Jamie says, “Some people like new cars. I can’t tell you how excited I get when uncrating a new laser.” Nurse Jamie resides in Pacific Palisades and is a doting mother to triplets (two girls and one boy). —Anna Shay
