GenLUX

Speaking of Brits, we’ve just added our second one (George Blodwell, our editor at large, was our first) to the Genlux roster. Welcome Amanda Eliasch —our new fashion editor. She is a brilliant woman of many gifts: actor, photographer, author, stylist, poet, and a fashion aficionado. As I write this, Amanda is in Paris taking in the runway shows and blogging about them. You’ll be hearing more about this beautiful and talented British import in Genlux issues to come.

Top of mind are all of the financial-stimulus plans. None seem to be working, so please allow me to offer mine: It begins with fasting from the news, not engaging with that pessimistic neighbor or overly analytical husband—you know, the one with all the frightening financial facts—and thawing out all that frozen plastic in your wallet. It’s time to shop like it’s 2008…well, early 2008. It’s time to get the wheels of progress moving again. No more giving in to farcocktah rumors that shoppers are carrying their precious purchases out of the Valentino boutique in brown paper bags (that’s a good one) or the one about how we’re dullingdown our fashion looks to skirt even a hint of conspicuous consumption (what?). No, if indeed “perception equals reality,” we need to wear our way out of this mess! Think about it, wouldn’t new Louby platforms on every woman raise the collective spirit of the nation? That, coupled with our storming Washington—fists raised in unison, shouting like Gerard Butler in 300—to coerce Congress to kick a chunk of that stimulus cash (that the banks don’t have a clue what to do with) to all of us Genluxers. Hey, at least we’d have some CHANEL products to show for the money.

Special thanks to those who have added their wonderful products to our celebrity gift bags! Oraia, Aquage, Babor, Single, Michael Stars, Black Halo, Too faced, OPI, Michele watches and handbags, Sircuit, ABS jewelry, Chaya, Ona, Privé.

The recent fall-out of the economy showed us that nothing is certain. The reality is, life isn’t easy—but that doesn’t mean we should give up on fashion. We just need to be a bit cleverer about what we buy. Each season there are different trends, but this time the focus is on the clothes rather than the themes. Look for that one piece that will work with everything else you have in your closet. Accessorize it differently each time you go out, and you’ll look like you have a new outfit. My advice: look for the piece that will last a lifetime. Bejeweled pieces have been around for a long time, but this spring they return brighter, bolder, and classier. Not limited to evening gowns, this more elegant version of bling also found its way onto jackets, day dresses, and accessories. Ladies, you will go crazy for the gorgeous Single pleated boat-neck dress! (p.144) The incredible Roberto Cavalli clutch (p.144) is one item you’ll keep forever. A must-have this season is the Fendi white pant with back ruffles (p.142). It can be worn day and night.

Why not make a huge statement by wearing yellow and peach! Check out the so-sexy Christian Louboutin platform sandal (p.140), which, by the way, comes in a few other colors. If you try on the Donna Karan coral dress (p.141) you will not be able to take it off. It’s so soft and yet so comfortable that you could sleep in it. (But that would not be right!)

24 GENLUX SPRing / 2009

I guarantee you’ll find something to fall in love with in this issue. One of my favorite things this spring is the jewelry. There’s one item I simply adore, and fell head-over-heels for when I laid eyes on it. It’s the exquisite Aquamarine Marquesa cocktail ring from Harry Winston (p. 32). Spring is finally here. Go out there, be bold and fabulous, but most important, be toi!

BLOW-up!

SPRING / 2009 GENLUX 85

I

By Marsha Takeda-Morrison

f you were to believe any of the stories currently making the rounds about Mischa Barton, you’d think she was frighteningly thin, nursing an eating disorder, and on her deathbed from a weekly calorie count in the

single digits. Which is why, when I met the actress for lunch a few weeks ago, I was fully expecting to find a hollow-eyed waif with sunken cheekbones, her lunch consisting of a single lima bean and a sliver of lemon wedge. So what a relief it was when she walked into the restaurant and looked, at least on this day, perfectly normal and even healthy. Settling into her chair, Barton is casual and relaxed in her See by Chloé top and Seven jeans, and addresses the rumors that have been tabloid fodder in the past few weeks. “Either way, they’re going to talk,” she sighs, referring to the press and gossip-mongers who have mercilessly hounded her about her weight over the years. “One minute I’m too fat and the next minute I’m too skinny. Last year it was even worse—it was all about cellulite,” she says of those pictures that were making the rounds on the Internet. “It’s so embarrassing and really rude.” Not to mention a sure buzzkill for any date. “You’ll be walking down the street with a guy you like, and somebody will say, ‘Hey, Mischa! How do you feel about TMZ calling you fat this week?’ or ‘You’re encouraging kids to be anorexic.’ I tell them, ‘I’m not doing anything—you’re saying these things!’” Barton, who entered the popular lexicon when she starred as troubled socialite Marissa Cooper in the hugely popular series The OC, seems puzzled by all the press attention she gets, good or bad. “I don’t quite understand what all the fuss is about with me,” she says, laughing. “But I particularly get angry when they talk about my family or close friends.” The subject of family, friends, and loyalty comes up often when talking to Barton, and it’s clear a breach of trust can really piss a girl off. “I must admit the one thing I’ve developed over the years is a real issue with loyalty,” she says earnestly. “It means everything to me. Like, if somebody crosses me once, it’s over.” But Barton lights up when she talks about certain fellow actors and the perks of moviemaking. She calls working with Martin Sheen on her current film, Bhopal: Prayer for Rain, an “amazing experience” and says of her time filming in India: “It’s such an incredible country. I was really taken by their religion—really impressed with Buddhism. I love the idea of not needing temples or gods, and you can just be spiritual and moral. I’m not into organized religion…I hope my Irish Catholic family doesn’t read that,” she says with a laugh. “They already think I’m going to hell because of my job. They’re supportive, but I do have the aunts and uncles and great-aunts who say, ‘What’s your character doing on TV?’” (continued on page 86)

(continued from page 84) Those characters and “being someone else and getting to lose myself in a role” are what Barton loves about acting, so the theme of this month’s Genlux cover shoot— the 1966 film Blow-up, written and directed by famed Italian auteur Michelangelo Antonioni— was a no-brainer. And she was excited about having the chance to work with legendary photographer Marc Baptiste. “I loved working with him!” she says. “He’s got such great energy. You don’t know if he’s going to get something great, but then he pulls it up on the screen, crops it…and it’s a masterpiece.” Referring to the British theme of this issue, I ask the London-born Barton if she thinks of herself as more American, or if she’s a Brit at heart. “I’m an English, Irish, and American citizen,” she explains. “I really do identify with Britain, and I fit in there. I feel at home with a good British sense of humor and just having a pint at the pub with friends in London.” Part of Barton’s popularity is her unconventional style. She calls her personal look “quite eclectic,” and for the most part eschews that celebrity staple, the personal stylist. “I don’t use a stylist,” she says with a shrug. “Even at the height of The OC, when I was doing tons of press, I styled myself. Maybe for a big event or a red carpet, but otherwise I don’t understand paying someone to dress you. Besides, I wouldn’t want to be told what to wear. I think clothes are very personal and should have meaning. It should excite you to get dressed in the morning!” One thing that definitely excites Barton is Pilates: “Sometimes when I’m in LA I’ll do it six days a week. You get addicted. I mean, it’s working out while lying down—there’s nothing not to like!” Barton needs to wrap up the interview; she wants to visit her beloved dog Charles Dickens who is in the hospital. So, seeing as she hasn’t dropped a single celebrity name during lunch, I ask her which stars—dead or alive—she would have at her dream dinner party. She laughs at the question, but then rattles off a list of fantasy guests, including Keith Richards, Salvador Dali, Richard Attenborough, Todd Rundgren, Liv Tyler, Bob Dylan, and Alfred Hitchcock. Noticing the abundance of musicians on her list, I ask her if she’s thinking about going down that road herself. “No!” she says emphatically. “I love music too much to want to ruin it for myself in that way. I already know so many people in the music industry, and I don’t want to become jaded about it. You have to have something left for yourself at the end of the day.” G

“What do I like about LA? What’s not to like?” —Rod Stewart, rock star “I grew up in London and I love it dearly, but when it comes to LA, what some people see as faults, I see as virtues. They say it has no center; I love the fact it has so many different and separate and varied neighbourhoods. They say it has no history, but it does, of course, and it is all recent. I love the fact that one could hunt in Laurel Canyon, farm along Wilshire Boulevard, or find a deserted beach in Malibu only decades ago. And that what history it does have revolves around movie stars and moguls and show biz myths, not around kings and queens and revolutions. Much more fun.” —Peter Asher, legendary guitarist, singer, record producer, music manager, and half of the ‘60s pop duo Peter & Gordon SPRING / 2009 GENLUX 101

Peter Ishkhans, celebrity stylist and host of The Style Network series Peter Perfect, offers his tips for on-the-go hair:

JETSETTING SKIN Liz Earle, co-founder of Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare, offers suggestions for

looking—and feeling—vibrant and healthy, even while globetrotting.

Tip No. 1: For pre-flight preparation, a course of garlic capsules is useful during the

summer months, as they help act as an internal natural mosquito repellent by subtly changing the “flavor” of the skin. Garlic is also an excellent antibacterial agent and can help guard against mild stomach bugs picked up abroad. Tip No. 2: If you’re prone to travel/motion sickness, I’ve found

that ginger is an effective natural remedy. Due to its holistic properties, ginger has been used since ancient times to alleviate nausea. To help with the problem, try taking ginger capsules an hour or two before you set off.

Tip No. 3: If you experience prickly-heat rash, taking a daily

200mg supplement of grapeseed extract can provide real relief. It’s a powerful skin-saving ingredient with anti-inflammatory properties.

Tip No. 4: I drink plenty of water. It’s essential to keep the body

hydrated to avoid sluggishness and help prevent skin from looking tired and dull. I advise keeping the face makeup-free, so you can liberally re-apply your moisturizer during the flight.

110 GENLUX SPRING / 2009

What hair-styling tips do you recommend while traveling? It’s all about

maximizing space and streamlining your beauty supplies: “Just how much can I fit into my rolling suitcase?” With this in mind, the key to keeping your hair beautiful when you travel is to miniaturize everything, from your curling iron and hair dryer to your brush and gel. Before you pack, put together a styling kit with a few essential multiuse products, including a curling iron, hair clips to section hair, about 10 bobby pins, and a round brush. Take things—like a stylist band—which will allow you to transform your hairstyle from day to evening quickly.

What do you recommend for trips to different climates, like humid or sunny or cold destinations? Humidity creates frizz, and

loading products onto your hair won’t help. When traveling, a quick remedy is to simply dampen your hair. And keep in mind that you don’t have to wash your hair to tame the frizz. It actually works much better just to dampen—even blotting your hair with some tissue paper works great.

Cold climates naturally take moisture out of your hair, so including a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, or a very light stylist cream, is crucial for avoiding fly-aways. In sunny weather, use hair products that contain sunscreen. There are a variety of leave-in conditioners with sunscreen, and you can go out in them day or night. What styling aids should you pack? A medium-strength stylist gel.

The gel will hold curls, and you can even create a slicked-back evening look. After applying gel, you can also blow-dry your hair to give it some added body.

trenD aLerts beaUtY breaKDoWn: the U.K. Vs. the U.s.

“The U.k. consumer tends to seek quality and reliability, and we’ve certainly gone through and past the organic trend. with the credit crunch, we’ve noticed it’s about being with a reliable brand they can trust and one that delivers results they can see. one will always want results, no matter what. In the U.k., they’re not always just hooked on ingredients—like with argan tree oil, they want to know, “does it work? And what are the results?” The U.s. market tends to be trend-led and more interested in a buzz ingredient, and we still see a lot of ‘organic’ stories. But judging from the success of Elemis, and our brand now gaining a savvy client, clients are beginning to ask more questions and want more knowledge, which is very exciting for us. This is what we like. For example, we’re seeing a better understanding of the Tri-Enzyme resurfacing range, and later this year Tri-Enzyme resurfacing Gel Mask launches in the U.s., so we very much look forward to that.” — noella Gabriel, director of product and treatment development, Elemis

nonie creme, creative director of

Butter London, gives us the lowdown on what to look for in this season’s nail trends:

tip no. 1: Flying with lots of makeup on

color: In order to properly trendforecast hot colors for Butter London’s spring/summer 2009 collection, I went backstage at the shows and worked with the designers to realize appropriate nail colors. colorful prints ruled the shows I worked. The collections were full of historical and ethnic references like ancient Egypt, Africa, and Mexico. Based on that, I have created the following lacquer colors for spring/summer ’09: Teal—this true teal is a show-stopper, high fashion and so unique; it’s the perfect way to wear this trend without overkill; yellow—banana yellow—happy, healthy color for spring; raspberry—rich, delicious berry lacquer, perfect for in-between days when red is too much and pink is too little; Metallic copper—burnished copper with a beautiful antique patina, for sophisticated metal-heads; Lilac—not your mother’s lilac, an opaque shade that’s pale but packs a punch. shape: For spring/summer ’09, still on the short side, still round. please

do not even think about wearing those revolting ‘squoval’ nails. who even made that hideous name up? I object!

Butter London Nail Lacquers—no formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP. Kitson Melrose, 310-855-9635

makes me feel dirty, so I generally wear tinted moisturizer and some mascara. But if you can’t possibly be seen with no ma keup on, I would recommend using a light, textured foundation—try Nude dior or tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier— and if you feel like a little color, dior Bronze original Tan; a little mascara, dior show; and on the lips, dior Lip Glow.

As part of Oxfam’s “Make Trade Fair” campaign, Oxfam Global Ambassador Minnie Driver traveled to Cambodia and Thailand to learn about labor conditions. In Bangkok, she visited a garment factory, where she learned firsthand how to make a T-shirt.

hether it’s listening to Abbey Road for the millionth time, cruising Sunset Boulevard in an Aston Martin, or enjoying a cold pint at the end of a long day, we Americans do love our British imports. But there’s one U.K. institution that hasn’t become a household name on these shores just yet, though it’s omnipresent in Great Britain and in many other places around the world. That institution is Oxfam. Born in Oxford, England, during World War II, Oxfam—as in the “Oxford Famine Relief Committee”—started as a campaign to get food and supplies to starving families in occupied Greece. Now, more than half a century later, it fights poverty and injustice around the world, including right here in the States, where the organization mounted its first U.S. domestic response, during Hurricane Katrina. However, explains Lyndsay Cruz, Oxfam American Special Advisor on Public Figures, while the organization is “probably best known for our relief work, which is being an immediate responder to people who are on the ground and affected by a humanitarian disaster or conflict,” Oxfam’s primary goal is “saving lives, strengthening communities, and campaigning for change at a high policy level.” In its numerous campaigns, which target such urgent issues as climate change, education, and HIV/AIDS, Oxfam enlists the help of some of entertainment’s brightest stars: Scarlett Johansson, Kristin Davis, Colin Firth, and Minnie Driver are just a few of the famous faces that have helped Oxfam promote positive change by traveling around the world as global ambassadors. Driver has been working with the organization since she was a child,

doing sponsored swims and participating in Oxfam campaigns like Make Trade Fair, in which she helped create awareness about the practice of trade dumping, where wealthy countries “dump” subsidized produce—like cotton—on the world market, driving down prices for farmers in poor countries. Oxfam is “incredibly effective,” Driver says with obvious pride in the nonprofit’s work. “But they always were—they were just much smaller. They really were based out of a little tiny house in Oxford…and it was just to do with getting food to people in the very beginning, and now obviously dealing with all forms of poverty across the globe. It’s in something like more than 120 countries—a lot, a lot, a lot of places. They have a far-reaching impact now.” But Oxfam International’s 13 affiliates—including Oxfam America, Great Britain, Spain, and France—don’t just focus all of their energies on one cause at a time. Instead, they prioritize, and when there’s a humanitarian crisis, they come together. So what is Oxfam America currently working on? “Our priority campaign in the U.S. right now is climate change and how it affects very poor people, and specifically women,” Cruz says. “I feel like we don’t hear enough how it affects people. Those who are least responsible for climate change are hit the hardest—people in areas where drought and flooding are a natural way of life.” Indeed, climate change and other urgent issues know no borders, so the organization is a welcome presence on American shores. And with the long road ahead, Oxfam is one more British import that, happily, is here to stay.

george blodwell Spring, and the air is filled with love.

Spring is such a magical time of year. I love seeing the buds about to burst with beauty and color and fragrance. It’s a time of rebirth and renewal. Nature seems to sing its morning songs, calling attention to the wonders of creation and the beauty that is undeniable, the magic that exists all around us. It’s just for you. If you were not here, there would be no spring. I find it interesting that we humans have created North, South, East and West as pointers. They don’t really exist. Countries like Britain, Japan, Italy, Africa, USA—let’s not forget that these names are all man-made labels for different places on our planet. This issue we are highlighting some great designs from across the pond: a salute to the Brit designers whom we know and love. How about some other labels or creations that we can wear? That sounds like fun, so here we go. Stephen Webster has created waves Traffic People in England for turquoise blue sheer dress, $195, EM & Co., LA, 323782-8155

some time now. His moonstone ring is a real eye-catcher with exquisite details. He is also designing for Garrard now. I love the angelwing diamond cuff. It’s spectacular. I love Alice Temperley, another British designer. Her gray long-sleeved top with billowing white pleated detail is a work of art. Her evening gowns are exemplary. If you like to make an entrance, Temperley is on your side. Her blue gown here, with touches of red and white, reminds me of the British flag. Sado is a new name to most Americans. This label is fresh and remarkable. Watch out for Sado. Going away for a spring break? Don’t forget a great bathing suit like this one from La Perla. It’s a stunner. Most of all, enjoy yourself !

genLuXsHop eXperts offer up tHeir tips for staying HeaLtHy wHiLe traipsing around tHe gLobe. – anaSTaSIa JULIA TATUM HUNTER, M.D., OF SKIN FITNESS PLUS, ON FOODS THAT MAXIMIZE SKIN’S YOUTHFULNESS:

Foods can positively or negatively impact how we look. Foods that cleanse our livers of toxins, heavy metals, and fatty infiltration and that keep the enzymes in the liver functioning energetically make the body work more efficiently. That makes us happier—which impacts how we look—and healthier, so our skin is clearer, tighter, and brighter. Dark fruits are full of antioxidants, which combat aging and disease by decreasing inflammation and increasing collagen production. Increased production of collagen and collagen-producing cells occurs when there are higher doses of vitamins (especially C), MSM (inorganic sulfur, part of every cell in our bodies), and minerals in the blood, tissues, and skin. This thickens the skin [for a youthful look] and decreases abnormal blood vessels that can cause rosacea. HUNTER RECOMMENDS:

Foods: Cilantro, parsley, dense green foods such

as broccoli, turnip and mustard greens, sea greens, dandelion greens, spinach, and arugula. Healthy oils: Oils that “help juice up the skin,” such as olive, walnut, hemp, flax, borage, black currant, raw coconut, and omega-3s (preferably from fish). One to two liters of water per day: As we get older, our bodies tend to ‘dry up,’ which contributes to fine lines and helps gravity. Layering therapies: Add a green tea bag to your daily water ration, and if you can, green powders and organic whole-leaf aloe juice (one to two ounces per day). These nutrients combat aging, laxity, and brown spots and improve clarity and tightness of the skin all over the body. They also decrease aging of the internal organs, including the brain, and decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s. —Julia T. Hunter,

10 TIPS

for staying HeaLtHy wHiLe traVeLing

—“nUTRITIonIST To ThE STaRS” anD LIFE-EXTEnSIon SPECIaLIST oZ GaRCIa, Ph.D.

1. Stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of water two days prior

to traveling and during your flight. Chamomile tea protects against bacteria and will help fight infections that you might be exposed to in the cabin’s recycled air. 2. Eat mostly lean protein such as turkey, seafood, lean chicken, fiber, and vegetables. Avoid starches and heavy carbs like breads and heavy pastas, as well as heavy, dense meals. 3. Along with AriZona Beverage Co., I have formulated two new products that are ideal for anyone who needs a morning boost or deep relaxation at night. AriZona A.M. Awake QuickShot gives you a healthy, sustained energy charge, without the crash of coffee. It’s great for clarity of mind and alertness and is packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and green tea. We engineered AriZona P.M. Relax QuickShot to calm the mind. It can naturally assist neurotransmitters, and contains a brain nutraceutical that can help to control sleep duration and quality. 4. Always moisturize your skin before getting on a plane. Soak in a bath after landing to replenish moisture through the pores. Bathing also relaxes the nerves, which in turn can help you fall asleep faster. 5. Work out and stretch before flying. It helps with circulation and stress. While in flight, get up and walk around to stretch and increase circulation. Practice deep breathing. 6. Carry Ocean Nasal Spray. It’s a saltwater solution that helps moisten the nasal passages and clear sinuses. 7. Take advantage of luxury offerings at your hotel. Take in a steam, visit the sauna, or get a massage to help relax and release muscles, promote circulation, combat stress, and stimulate the immune system. 8. Avoid notoriously salty airline food to reduce dehydration. Order a low-salt meal from the airline several days prior to your flight, and avoid salty snacks. Bring healthy snacks with you, such as an apple, an orange, a bag of almonds, and a protein bar. 9. Fortify your body against catching cold by taking antioxidants before flying, including 1000 mg of vitamin C. The number one way to catch cold on a plane is by touching surfaces infected with germs. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and don’t rub your eyes. Spray your seat—and surrounding seats if possible—with a solution of grapefruit seed extract, which is naturally antiparasitic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. 10. Travelers often need to be well rested and ready to work or sightsee on day one. If possible, prior to your trip, alter your sleep schedule to emulate the hours you’ll be sleeping when you arrive at your destination. Lack of sleep increases stress hormones and detracts from your body’s ability to relax. Sleep deprivation increases a hunger hormone and decreases the hormones that make you feel satiated; therefore, skipping sound sleep may lead to weight gain. Don’t count on catching up on your rest in the airport during your layover; disturbed sleep is just as bad as not sleeping at all!

Step into spring with Bellacures’ Life’s Just Peachy Mani & Pedi. It starts with a warm peach soak followed by an exfoliating homemade peach salt scrub for a cleansing of both dead skin and bad energy. Manicurists will then apply a lovely amber Sedona & French red clay masque to soothe and replenish your hands and feet, and afterward, a peach moisture cream and hot booties and mittens. A 10-minute massage comes next, rejuvenating your hands, feet, and mind. And all month long, the service comes with a peach martini! Gavert Atelier is expanding its space and its services, adding a secondfloor loft with two signature suites: the Beauty Atrium, which offers waxing, brows, and makeup; and the Hair Spa, which is Japanese-themed, with Yumi chairs where you decompress while getting stress-relieving head and scalp massages along with conditioning treatments. 9666 Brighton Way, Beverly Hills, 310858-7898, gavertatelier.com

In a cheeky nod to the gloomy economy, Westside Medical Spa is offering a new treatment: the Poor Man’s Facelift. Combining C02 laser resurfacing and injectables, this “liquid facelift” is ideal for men and women seeking a brighter look without the risks, recovery time, and cost of invasive cosmetic surgery. $3000–$4500, 1033 Gayley Ave, Suite 104, LA, 888-722-7727, westsidemedicalspa.com

Laboratoire Remède has a sleek new look, but more important, a new formula that is true therapy for the skin, designed to heal the past and plan for the future. It’s based on three powerful compounds: Green Defense, an extract of the white nymphea flower that protects against the elements and fights signs of aging; Skin Reaching Technology, which guides ingredients to where they are most needed; and skin-type-specific

TechnoBlends, proprietary ingredient combinations that target specific deficiencies in order to promote skin recovery and radiance. TechnoBlends all combat signs of aging, but each variety is tailored for specific needs. Alchemy addresses initial signs of aging; HydraTherapy is for dry, sensitive skin; Matte Therapy is for oily, active skin; and Wrinkle Therapy is for— you guessed it!—wrinkles. $40–165, blissworld.com

Fix Malibu has a new secret weapon in the fight against signs of aging: the Fraxel Re:pair laser, which tightens and smoothes the skin and, in some ways, can be more effective than surgical lifting procedures. With the Fraxel Re:pair, which is more aggressive than the original Fraxel, patients can expect four to five days of downtime. Single treatments start at $2000 for small areas, like around the mouth and eyes, and can range up to $5000– $6000 for the face and neck. 22741 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, 310-456-5350, fixmalibu.com

Where’s your favorite place to escape to?

I return to the Hotel Splendido in Portofino year after year—it’s a small, exclusive boutique property only an hour from Monaco, on the coast in the Cinque Terre region of Italy.

HIGH SOCIETY monica von neumann

Stratospheric social circles know Baroness Monica von Neumann as a powerful philanthropist, but few realize that her talents extend to interior design, entertainment, and intellectual properties. In a short span of time, she’s lived the lives of three women, going from model to wife to businesswoman and tastemaker, but amid all that, she somehow finds the time to star in her own reality TV show, Extra’s “Baroness of Bel Air.”

What do you pack? Oh, my God, where do I start? I travel frequently between homes and visiting friends, so I believe I almost have it down to a science. For me, it’s about themes. One of the best that has worked for me everywhere I go is a “black and white” travel kit.

Two must-haves are a form-flattering knee-length, silk Fendi dress in black-and-white stripes, and a Cavalli pencil skirt in leopard with lace trim—so sexy. I’ll throw in one extra dress and a Dolce & Gabbana stretch silk skirt in crème. That way I can eat a little pasta and not be mortified; it’s a forgiving silhouette. To accentuate these looks, I’ll bring two Nancy Gonzalez croc clutches. Paul Tanner and Anna S

Anna S, Entrepreneur, philanthropist, car collector

In a town famous for throwing lavish soirées, we first met Anna S at a party at her home in Beverly Hills on one such occasion—to celebrate her new car: a first-off-the-assembly-line, one of three hundred, 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL AMG Black Series rocketship (shown above). Over champagne and caviar, we spoke with Anna of her passions and her loves, and why she won’t be afraid of driving behind the wheel of a car with 661 horsepower. Anna, here we are at a party for your new automobile. How did this all come about? I’ve always loved cars. They have such strength, elegance and beauty. I’m an avid collector. I heard about this particular one from Paul Tanner, who is the general manager of Mercedes-Benz Encino. He’s always been very truthful, helpful, open and honorable with me—it’s just the way he runs his dealership. All the people who work there follow these same values. Let me give you an example of my trust in Paul. When I decided to get a car that was not a Mercedes—a Ferrrari, in fact—I called for his advice. That was all it took. He located the exact car I wanted, and basically looked out for my interests. What more could anyone ask? My new car is a very limited 2009 SL 65 AMG Black series— basically a race car disguised as a street automobile—one of the most powerful street-legal vehicles. Paul Tanner with Anna’s son Kenny

It’s true that not many women own this new Mercedes. Care to comment? I don’t know why people always want to make a distinction between men and women. Everyone has their own qualities. Women are just as powerful as men. Power has nothing to do with gender. It’s about the person and the inner strength and security that they have within themselves. It’s knowing who you are. What are some of your other interests? My family is the most important. I love fashion, travel and meeting people. I tend to see the good in everyone. I strongly believe that everyone can achieve anything they want—that is, if they want it badly enough and believe in themselves. Are you a risk-taker? I’ve been told different versions of that, though I don’t really think about whether I’m a risk-taker or not. I only follow my heart, my dreams, my visions. However, for my son, Kenny, now that’s different. I would risk all for him. We discuss everything together and talk everything through. He gives me my strength and empowers me. He’s my greatest love and my inspiration, and together, we do the things we do. Isn’t it just a bit scary driving a car with over 600 horsepower? No, not at all. I’ve been trained on a racetrack on how to properly drive a car—a racecar, at that! But the horsepower isn’t the only reason why I bought this car; the reason is quite simple. To me, this car is a true work of art. I feel very fortunate to be able to pursue my passions. I wish everyone was able to do so.

WHERE ARE YOU SHOPPING? On every trip, Isabelle Puech flea markets are priorities for my husband and me. We love them, and they’re the only kind of shopping he can put up with! The ones in Paris, like Clignancourt—go to Michel Perraches and Eric Miel’s spot at Stand No. 21, an extraordinary place. The 13th arrondissement for Chinese products—a balm of possum for migraines, and exotic fruits and vegetables for when I feel nostalgic about the amazing boat trips I took as a child. Le Marais for Kiehl’s products, but I often bring those back from the New York Kiehl’s store. And I’m a devoted admirer of Dries Van Noten; his Paris boutique is superb.

I’m an impulse shopper. If I pass a boutique, as soon as I see something I like, I give in— provided that it suits me. With objects (that aren’t clothes), I don’t hesitate. And I am methodical when I look for something very specific. For example, I failed to find the CHANEL 005 heels—I called stores all over the world, press services, connections we had…nevertheless, no shoes! SHOPPER I.D.:

gENLUXshop Oh, canada! LIANE Balaban

Ella Zahlan Estella Havisham dress, price upon request, Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills, 310275-4211; Jimmy Choo Poem Nappa leather platform, $740, Jimmy Choo, Beverly Hills, 310-860-9045; Erica Courtney 18K gold and diamond peridot 23" bracelet, $13,440, 18K gold and 9.8 ct diamond peridot flower necklace, $18,060, Erica Courtney, LA, 323-938-2373

Perhaps best recognized for her portrayal of Moonie Pottie in 1999’s New Waterford Girl, Canada-born actress Liane Balaban is everywhere these days, with half a dozen films in various stages of production and one in theaters now—Overture Films’ Last Chance Harvey, which has already earned her co-star Dustin Hoffman a Golden Globe nomination. Here, she gives Genlux the lowdown on her style faves. How would you describe your personal style?

An ingénue who raided her grandmother’s closet. What’s your favorite item in your closet?

L’Occitane Hand Cream, $10, L’Occitane at The Grove, LA, 323-857-1123

My red DKNY cashmere cardigan. I wear it with everything. It’s like a protective blanket. What’s always in your purse?

Hand sanitizer, a mini-moisturizer (I like L’Occitane mini hand cream), and a lip balm. I love the Tarte 24•7 lip sheers because they hydrate and give a natural flushed color.

What’s your weekend look?

Zero + Maria Cornejo sack dress and Bloch flats. Tarte 24•7 natural lip sheers with SPF 15, $14, tarte.com Bloch Luxury ballet flat in black and pink, $165, revolveclothing.com

What message do your clothes give the world about you?

That I’m relaxed and unconventional.

If you could only wear one designer from head to toe, including accessories, who would it be?

Chloé.

What’s your favorite low-price secret weapon store?

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

Rome is my favorite city on earth. It’s young and vibrant, yet enveloped by an incredible history that lives on in its crumbling remains and rustic cuisine. Do you overpack or underpack?

In an attempt to travel ultra-light, I usually underpack. This is actually worse than overpacking, because I end up buying tons of things and have to lug shopping bags back with me. What’s your go-to LA boutique?

Opening Ceremony on La Cienega.

Ross! I got the best shimmery blue Steve Madden ballet flats there for a ridiculous price. What’s your earliest fashion memory?

When I was nine, Cotton Ginny was a Canadian brand that was very much in vogue among my classmates. There was this unspoken rule that you wear a pastel turtleneck under the Cotton Ginny sweatshirt. That and snap bracelets! What do you sleep in?

Pajamas my characters wore in movies.

See by Chloé bowfront dress, $430, net-a-porter.com

What kind of watch do you wear?

A Movado watch from the Hannah Clark boutique [in New York]. Hannah Clark also designed my engagement ring. Who is your favorite photographer?

Photo courtesy: Cheim & Read, NY © Eggleston Artistic Trust

I love William Eggleston. His portraits are just snapshots, yet they convey so much backstory and context. To me there’s always something romantic and a bit tragic about the people he shoots. They are both ordinary and iconic. What’s your favorite scent?

I love my bottle of Rose de Mai by Fragonard. I bought it at the Fragonard factory in Eze, France, during a school trip eight years ago. I use it sparingly because I want it to last forever.

gENLUXshop island girl NAVI RAWAT

Fans of the CBS hit show Numbers will recognize actress Navi Rawat as the character Amita Ramanujan, while those still bemoaning The O.C. will remember her as Theresa Diaz. But in real life, Rawat would rather avoid the drama and hang out at home in Free City tees or pack her bags and jet off to Bora Bora for some quality R&R.

H&M faux snakeskin print bangle, $6.90, H&M, West Hollywood, 310652-0721

How would you describe your personal style?

I would say that my personal style is eclectic. Sometimes I’m very into the boho chic look, and then other days I go with a very classic look—like basic jeans and a Ralph Lauren sweater. It really depends on my mood, how much time I have before I fly out the door, and the weather. The weather is always a major factor because I tend to get cold very easily. What’s your favorite item in your closet?

It’s a toss up between my Dolce & Gabbana winter coat and a beautiful purple Matthew Williamson cocktail dress. What’s always in your purse?

Matthew Williamson violet dress, $2100, Matthew Williamson, NY, 212-255-9881

There’s usually way too much stuff in my purse! I almost always carry oversized bags; my current favorite is by Richard Prince for Louis Vuitton. I tend to use it as my briefcase, so sometimes there are books and/or cameras inside, but normally just my wallet, sunglasses, BlackBerry, and a few basic makeup items. What’s your weekend look?

Kain pocket tee in charcoal, $88, Madison, LA, 323-6513662

Lately I’ve become a real homebody on the weekends, so I find myself hanging around the house in sweats and T-shirts. I love Free City sweats and sweatshirts, and Kain T-shirts. What message do your clothes give the world about you?

That I am a complex person with many different aspects.

If you could only wear one designer from head to toe, including accessories, who would it be?

Chanel—it’s elegant, classic, and, in my mind, synonymous with Paris, my favorite city. What’s your favorite low-price secret weapon store?

CHANEL lambskin handbag, $3850, select CHANEL boutiques, 800-550-0005

H&M. I also like Topshop when I’m in Europe. What’s your earliest fashion memory?

When I was young, I was very into costumes and playing dress-up, so my first memories of fashion come from then. My mother’s friends used to make me fancy, elaborate dresses with material they bought at fabric stores, so I guess you could say I was quite spoiled early on.

What kind of watch do you wear?

I don’t wear a watch. I find it restricting. My father gave me a Rolex for my college graduation present, but I never wear it!

H&M pink bag, $12.90, H&M, West Hollywood, Who are your favorite fashion photographers? Mert and Marcus, and Mario Testino. I absolutely 310-652-0721 love photography, so I could go on and on. What’s your favorite scent?

My favorite go-to perfume is something I keep secret, because people are always asking me, and I don’t like sharing my secret weapons! So I will say Bond Street for Saks Fifth Avenue. It’s very floral and bold. What’s your favorite vacation destination?

Over the past few years I find myself exploring French Polynesia, and more specifically the islands of Tahiti. I’ve been to Papeete, Moorea, and Bora Bora. Bora Bora is my favorite. It’s so scenic and relaxing. You can lie in a hammock reading all day long, or enjoy a plethora of water activities. It offers variety, and the air smells like the sweet, intoxicating tiare flower that blooms there. What are your go-to LA boutiques?

Madison and Intermix.

Do you overpack or underpack?

I am the biggest overpacker ever! It’s actually one of my New Year’s resolutions to work on this, because it’s a serious problem. My motto is: When in doubt, bring everything! emember the unforgettable scarlet satin gown Helen Mirren wore at last year’s Academy Awards? The luxurious creation, with its Swarovski crystal sleeves, was designed by Georges Chakra, who also made the brilliant purple silk gown that Queen Latifah chose for the recent People’s Choice Awards. And that sensuous, crystalinlaid number caressing Beyoncé on her Irreemplazable album cover? Chakra. The bronze cocktail dress embellished with crystals and feathers that Fergie strutted in like a peacock on New Year’s Eve? Chakra. Although your typical Los Angeles clothes hound may not know his name, she definitely knows Georges Chakra’s designs. For years, the Lebanon-based haute couture master has been dressing Hollywood heavy hitters like Tyra Banks, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, and Mischa Barton in a dazzling palette of sumptuous fabrics. A Georges Chakra Paris runway show was even featured in the ultimate fashion flick, The Devil Wears Prada. And now, there’s a Georges Chakra ready-to-wear line, too. “It’s very modern and very glamorous,” says the designer, speaking by phone from his Beirut fashion house. “I wanted a collection that would instill confidence in the woman wearing it. The cut is clean and precise and pure, and it shows off the body.” When the 40 pieces in the Fall ’09 collection debuted on Valentine’s Day in Bryant Park during New York Fashion Week, guests oohed and aahed over the lavish and shimmering pieces in charcoal, black, and burgundy. The dresses retail for $3000–10,000. In order to simultaneously design two collections—Spring/Summer

’09, which was unveiled at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris in January, and the ready-to-wear—“I had to divide my brain in two,” Chakra quips. “That collection is fresh and romantic, with lots of volume,” he says of his spring/summer pieces. “There’s lots of white and black and pastel colors like pistachio and sky blue. There’s tulle and lamé and organza, and a new plastic material we’ve embroidered with crystal and sequins.” Chakra came to fashion via interior design and, after studying in Canada at Ottawa’s Académie des Couturiers Canadiens, he opened a couture house in the Lebanese capital at the age of 22. Now, decades later, it’s still going strong. To make it easier for haute-couture customers who do not live in the Middle East, Chakra also opened a Paris showroom, which he visits every couple of weeks. Chakra cites Gianfranco Ferré’s blouses and Yves Saint Laurent’s jackets as inspirations. In an homage to YSL’s tuxedo jacket, Chakra took the classic silhouette and cut away the back. Chakra’s use of plastics and metals also recalls André Courrèges, the ultramodern ’60s designer who created miniskirts and dresses made from plastic discs. If Chakra could dress any Hollywood star, he would choose Michele Pfeiffer or Julia Roberts, but neither is his muse. Chakra doesn’t need a Sofia Coppola (Marc Jacobs’ muse) or an Inès de la Fressange (Lagerfeld’s longtime muse) to rev his creative engine. Just his laptop. “Muses are finished,” Chakra states. “With the Internet, you don’t need someone to dream about anymore. You can see what’s going on in Milan, New York, and Paris. It’s inspiration at your fingertips.”

ashion insiders love to rhapsodize about high-concept, envelope-pushing designers. When Yohji Yamamoto, Viktor & Rolf, Alexander McQueen, and Rei Kawakubo send three-armed jackets, outrageous chapeaux, and dresses made out of drink coasters down the runway, fashionistas respond with euphoric acclaim. Such displays of audacity and creativity are hard not to admire—but wearing such show-stopping pieces in real life is even harder. We may admire cutting-edge couture, but what we want to wear on important evenings out are beautiful dresses—pieces that make us feel gorgeous, not avant-garde. Luckily, “gorgeous” is Italian designer Alberta Ferretti’s specialty. Maybe it was a childhood spent at the feet of a dressmaker mother. “When I was a child, my mother would let me play with fabrics, cutting and sewing them as my fantasy suggested,” she says. “I grew up enjoying full creative freedom in that very particular atmosphere.” Since the Milan debut of her eponymous fashion line in 1981, Ferretti has produced season after season of sophisticated, wearable, and deliciously feminine dresses that have captivated customers and fashion insiders alike. Her signature romantic draping and her use of gauzy layers and delicate crystal embellishments have also scored the designer a cadre of famous followers, including Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lopez, and

Scarlett Johansson. Ferretti believes that such stars are drawn to her line’s “ethereal and feminine” take on fashion and says that her design aesthetic is particularly well suited for Hollywood’s elite. “I usually base my designs for day and evening on the idea that they are not trendy dresses, but dresses to wear for an elegant occasion or a redcarpet premiere,” she explains. Ferretti’s most recent collections have taken her signature style in inventive new directions. Her Spring 2009 line added layers of playful fringe to ’20s-inspired flapper frocks in luxe silks and shimmering satins. Such looks, Ferretti says, “are designed to translate Old Hollywood glamour for the modern woman.” Gorgeous grown-up gowns, though her specialty, are just one of the ways Ferretti brings her creative vision to life. In 1984, the designer created a diffusion line—Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti—to meet the needs of her chic younger customer, a woman Ferretti describes as “a little more whimsical; she’s still fresh and modern, but a bit more experimental. This line is an experimentation of a growing vision that reflects and underlines the aesthetic standards of the signature collection.” Both her signature and diffusion lines are available to lucky Los Angeles women at the designer’s first U.S. flagship store, which opened on Melrose Avenue last summer. Soon the boutique will feature Ferretti’s newest offering: a “very feminine, very elegant” signature fragrance created in partnership with venerable cosmetics house Elizabeth Arden. “It’s a project that I have been passionate about for many years,” Ferretti says. Fortunately for us, Ferretti’s zeal for creating things that make us look (and smell!) gorgeous shows no sign of abating.

uch of Los Angeles spends much of every year prognosticating about the city’s grandest annual event, the Academy Awards. As the big day approaches, the chattering classes speculate en masse: Which stars will get nominated? Who will get shut out? And which designers will rule the red carpet? But one name is a favorite at just about every year’s Oscar ceremony, and that name is Fred Leighton. When Michelle Williams donned that stunning yellow Vera Wang chiffon frock, she topped it off with a Fred Leighton 19th-century diamond-fringe necklace. When Jennifer Lopez stepped out in that flowing green Jean Desses gown, she framed her face with vintage Fred Leighton dangling diamond earrings. And Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman have both worn the jeweler’s pieces in their hair: Johansson opted for snowflake pins, while Portman chose a diamond tiara that was once a bracelet. But those are just a handful of the company’s memorable Oscar looks. One could spend all day cataloguing the evidence of Fred Leighton’s storied Hollywood relationship, which is why it’s surprising that the jeweler just opened its first Los Angeles boutique in December, on Rodeo Drive in the space formerly occupied by Celine. Architect Nicolo Bini of Line Brand Architecture worked closely with Fred Leighton owner Ralph Esmerian, known for his passion for fine jewelry and famed collection of precious gems, on a complete re-creation of the space. Once narrow and cavernous, it’s now modern and architectural, but it has a comfortable Southern California feel. With accents like chocolate cowhide walls, stainless-steel knife edges, and jewelry cases with uneven, asymmetrical frames in

gouged oak, there are nods to art deco and lots of Klimt-inspired touches. It’s an appropriately artful space for the collection that recently debuted there, an impressive grouping of pieces that have been traveling to museums and events around the world. Encompassing looks from the 19th and 20th centuries, including from the art nouveau and art deco periods, it’s something of a world’s greatest collection. With pieces hand-selected for the Beverly Hills boutique by Mr. Esmerian himself, it showcases the vintage looks that have earned the jeweler its fame—and turned Hollywood’s leading ladies into devoted fans. “One of the great things about our collection is that we can create very unique looks and very different looks, and that is usually the case for someone wearing Fred Leighton,” says Leighton spokesperson Rebecca Selva. “Nobody looks the same. Each look is different and very individual.” That sentiment rang especially true at this year’s Oscar ceremony, with confident stars such as Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Taraji P. Henson, Tina Fey, Melissa Leo, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis in the jeweler’s stunning wares. Adams in particular made headlines, decked out in an eye-catching 1950s colored-gemstone and diamond bib necklace. Fred Leighton fans like Adams have “raised the bar,” Selva says. “You can always tell who is wearing something with confidence and comfort, and who really understands what they’re wearing and is just having a great time. And that’s what we want ultimately, because it’s about the lady.” Fred Leighton, 313 Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, 310-550-3900, fredleighton.com

Naturally, its Spa du Soleil embraces Napa Valley’s wine culture, offering pairings of fine wines and signature treatments—like the Honey Rose Scrub with Rose Oil paired with the 1998 Amethyst Nebbiolo/Sangiovese—and many of the products used incorporate herbs that the therapists cultivate in the spa’s garden, like calendula, lemon balm, and rosemary. THE KEST CLINIC’S DR. EZRA KEST (310-276-1252, THEKESTCLINIC.COM):

AESTHETIC NURSE PRACTITIONER LOVELY ISRAEL OF BEVERLY HILLS’ VITALITY INSTITUTE (310-278-2122, VITALITY INSTITUTE.COM):

What products do you recommend for treating scars?

What’s the fastest way to make scars heal?

There are many products out there that claim to help treat and prevent scars. Unfortunately, most of them do not work. The best approach is to prevent the scar from forming in the first place by taking care of your wounds. Contrary to common belief, a wound does not “need air” or to “breathe” in order to heal. The best healing environment is a moist one that facilitates the natural healing process of your body. It’s important to put an ointment on your wound several times Aquaphor per day—I like Brave Soldier antiseptic healHealing Ointing ointment or Aquaphor. After the wound ment, 1.75oz, is healed and you have a scar, there are two $5.49, CVS topical products that are useful: silicone and tretinoin or Retin-A. Kelo-cote, a silicone scar Pharmacy, Hollywood, gel, is available in select physician offices; a thin layer applied over the scar twice a day for 323-463-7900 several weeks will help to lessen its appearance. Forms of tretinoin are available by prescription and can fade and shrink the scar over time. Sunscreen to prevent color changes in your scar is also very important. Once the scar is formed, laser treatments can work as well. Dr. Ezra Kest

What products can help repair and prevent stretch marks?

Stretch marks are very, very difficult to prevent and treat. I generally tell patients to keep themselves well moisturized at all times to help prevent stretch marks. There is some research that suggests collagen-stimulating products may help. Try Ayur-Medic Collagen Stimulating Serum. Once you get stretch marks, it’s next to impossible to repair them without some sort of procedure. Dream Belly by Fairhaven Health, with aloe, $19.95, fairhavenhealth. com

When the skin is wounded, healing takes place in three phases: inflammatory, proliferative, and remodeling. The key to increasing healing time of scars is making sure that the skin can go through these three phases without interruption. The single most effective way to decrease one’s healing time is by keeping the wound area moist and covered initially after the injury. The wound should heal over the next four to seven days if you keep it clean and covered, while regularly applying vitamin E oil and over-the-counter antibacterial ointments such as Neosporin. How can you keep scars from keloiding?

A keloid is a raised area of tissue in a wounded area that results from an overproduction of collagen. Keloiding can happen as a result of the proliferative stage of healing being interrupted. To prevent keloids from forming after an injury, do not remove the wound’s scab during healing, and prevent sun exposure to the affected area. Once the scab falls off naturally, apply an ointment such as Kelo-cote® or Mederma® Cream twice daily.

Merderma, $15, target.com

Do you suggest massaging the scar so it heals faster?

Massaging scar tissue has proven to be helpful, especially with large areas involving muscle fibers, such as with mastectomy scars. Some massage therapists actually specialize in this therapy, which releases the “puckering” or bundles seen with invasivesurgery scars. The use of massage will not heal the incision Lierac Comfort at a quicker rate but will prevent keloids or uneven scar Peel: very tissue and create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. gentle, yet Applying a silicone gel sheet such as Epi-derm™ over the combats signs area will also assist in flattening any raised scar tissue. of aging, $52, cvs.com; beauty.com Sircuit OMG is great for One Ten in One Multi-Treatment Facial Cream healing scars; it contains by True Promise Beauty combats shine epidermal growth factor, while hydrating, smoothing, and firming. a protein that helps $48, truepromisebeauty.com heal and repair the skin. $150, sircuitskin.com Dermelect Therapy Systems’ new Perfect for sensitive skin: Rapid Repair Dr. Hauschka Soothing Mask, Facial Moistur- Energizing Enzyme Peel uses $52.95, Sephora, Hollywood izer, with anti- papain and pineapple for exfoliation. & Highland, 323-462-6898 inflammatory $38, Blue Mercury, Century City, chamomile and 310-553-4440, bluemercury.com Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum, $45, Naimie’s azulene, $38, Beauty Center, Valley Village, 818-655-9933 dermelect.com

Hypertrophic scars and keloids can be injected with steroids; over a period of time they can shrink and become softer. Stretch marks can be treated with some of the new lasers. Fractionated lasers that target the deeper layers of the skin are having the most success. Laser energy is used to wound the skin, and the body’s natural healing process creates new collagen, dermis, and epidermis, repairing the stretch mark over For stretch marks: StriVectin-SD® stimulates time. With both injections and lasers, healing and increases collagen. 6oz, $135, multiple treatments are needed. Bloomingdale’s at the Beverly Center, 310-360-2851

It was the bag snagged around the world: Anya Hindmarch’s I’m Not a Plastic Bag, an unbleached-cotton tote, sold out in record time upon its 2007 launch. In a single day, 80,000 people queued up at the U.K.’s Sainsbury’s market chain in hopes of getting one. And in Taiwan, dozens were reportedly injured while clamoring to buy the bag at the posh Breeze Center. The eco-tote handily served its intended purpose: to raise awareness about plastic bags clogging the planet’s landfills. But it also made Hindmarch, already quite the success story (the beloved British designer began her company at only 19 and now has nearly 50 stores), a genuine household name. ¶ To say she’s “in demand” is a major understatement. When she’s not designing British Airways’ much-traded-on-eBay First Class Amenity Kit, Vanity Fair’s Oscar-party goodie bags, or Selfridges’ cheeky Christmas hampers (no fruitcake here!), she’s creating dreamy new iterations of her staple item—meticulously detailed handbags (like the Bespoke Ebury, a bag lover’s dream). Or shoes. Or small leather goods. Or luggage. Or ready-to-wear pieces. Or her beach line. Oh, and this January, she was awarded one of the U.K.’s highest honors, Member of the Order of the British Empire. ¶ So what’s next? It remains to be seen. Whatever it is, it’s sure to bear Hindmarch’s signature wit and workmanship. And I’m betting it draws a crowd.—Shannon L. Bowen The Ipanema clutch in rafia with tiger-eye detail, $365

The Disco clutch in tan calf leather with patentleather stripes, $495 ON AND OFF THE PLANE

What’s in your carry-on? A BlackBerry, The Spectator (lightweight, but gets me thinking), Country Life (I like to dream!), travel wallet, iPod, travel kit (lavender oil to sleep, aspirin, Sisley moisturizer, Advil pm if I’m desperate). What’s on your iPod? A real mix. Classical, Latin, and jazz are my favorites.

The Arne, a multicolored calf leather wicker-chair bag, $1225 WHEN YOU’RE IN LA WHERE DO YOU…

Stay in LA? The London, Shutters Have drinks? Sunset Towers and Chateau Marmont. Or I love an impromptu picnic with wine on the beach at sunset. FAVORITES IN LA

Shops: Anya Hindmarch, of course! Nathan Turner interior design shop, Ames Ingham (for home items), Jenni Kayne, BN&Y for amazing tuxedo jackets. And Vert in Abbot Kinney—it has all “green” products.

Restaurants: Comme Ça, The Brentwood Country Mart (great shops and restaurants—it’s so “old-fashioned LA!”), Girasole has the best Italian in town; I love the intimate, neighborhood feeling there, and the owner, Elio, is divine. Museums: LACMA. I also like M & B Gallery— amazing photography.

Reading material? As above, plus the book I meant to be reading…but my head is so busy—I find it hard to concentrate and lazily opt for the movie mostly. Grrr. What are your packing essentials for LA? Sunscreen and sunglasses. What packing essential do you recommend for friends visiting LA? Bring patience. Getting trapped in LA traffic is shocking. What’s the first thing you do to unwind? Have a massage. It helps you relax and regain circulation post-flight.

Neighborhood: Hancock Park

How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? Get Skype rigged up, my music, close the door, shut out the world.

Time of year: Winter. The sun still shines, unlike in dreary London!

Red-eye or morning flight? Morning flight. Always. Hate sleeping on planes.

Beach: Hollister Ranch

How do you look refreshed after a long flight? Try not to drink in-flight. Have a steam. Mason Pearson hairbrush. Good skincare.

The Jackson shoulder bag in matte calf leather, $495

What do you wish LA had more of that you have in London? Hard one—let’s face it. But I miss the density of London (which is weird). LA seems spread out, so less focused somehow. And the fact that you don’t need to worry about earthquakes—every Brit’s nightmare!

What do you wish London had more of that LA has? Not a hard one! The sea, the sun, the light, the low humidity, the attitude, the healthy food, the nail bars. The fact that you can park everywhere. The great gyms. How long have you got?
