GENLUX SAMIA ARSLANE EDITOR IN CHIEF

It’s fall, time for your fashion shopping list to include a great pair of shoes, a versatile handbag, a gorgeous black dress, and a cozy coat—items with lasting style power. As for me, I was on the hunt for an elegant pair of boots. One that caught my eye was the stylish Virginia knee-high by Brian Atwood. They’re comfortable, fashionable, and will add a pop of color to my ensembles. (p…) I’ve also been looking for a chic, yet practical handbag for daytime—something to carry some Genlux magazines to meetings. One gem is The Wrap by Valextra, out of Italy. The bag takes its cues from sculptural art…its sinuous shape inspired by monumental steel works, and its leather resembling their majestic constructions. Perfecto! Another obsession of mine is the suede skin-tight dress by Jean-Claude Jitrois (p…). Here’s one designer who should have his own boutique in Los Angeles. In this issue we’re also bringing you a few fashion trends that we like, and you will too. Long coats or short ones, and even dusters are making their comeback. If

20 GENLUX FALL 2015

you like to stand out from the crowd, we’ve got you covered. Just check out the Amanda Wakeley lipstick coat (p…) If you’re looking for an exotic destination, a oneof-a-kind place to travel to, don’t miss my article on the incredible One&Only Hayman Island, Australia’s iconic private island resort in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Well worth adding to your bucket list. (p…) Salvatore Ferragamo, the Italian luxury fashion house, recently debuted its impressive brand-new retail concept boutique by architect William Sofield. It sits across the street from Cartier, and next door to Fendi on Rodeo Drive. The new Beverly Hills flagship will boast the glamour of Hollywood and the celebrity of Ferragamo’s clientele, providing a luxurious shopping experience. Our Out-of-Towner is Ferragamo’s creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti (p…) Bisous à tous!

Nicky Hilton, the stunning heiress, is bright (she recently authored a book on style), talented (she designs fashion and handbags), and generous (she devotes her efforts to many charities). As STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER finds, it’s easy to see why James Rothschild decided to put a ring on it.

NICKY HILTON Nicky Hilton rings me from her Lower East Side NYC flat in a voice that’s surprisingly calm for a woman who’s tying the knot in less than two weeks. “I’m the opposite of the bridezilla,” she says. “I’m very relaxed. Everything’s all set.” Call it the clash of the trust-fund titans—Hilton, 31, is marrying James Rothschild (yes, one of those Rothschilds), at Kensington Palace in London. “I’m wearing a custom Valentino couture gown with custom Christian Louboutin shoes,” she says calmly, like it’s just another day—just another outfit. Her creamcolor Loubys are embossed with the words ‘Mrs. Rothschild.’ [When older sister, BFF, and maid of honor, Paris, posted them on Instagram, they received over 59,000 ‘likes.’] Today Nicky’s wearing a Jenny King dress and Valentino espadrilles. She’s also splashed on some Quelques Fleurs—her scent of choice since she was 15. “My fashion moves to my mood. I like to mix it up every day, and I like to be comfortable. I’ll usually top every outfit off with a pair of ballet flats. I love Valentino or Chloe flats, and Balenciaga makes some cool gladiator ones. I love a pair of classic Tods, or Nike.” Nicky, who admits to being very shy around people she doesn’t know, a bit impatient, and a total beauty addict, was thrilled when Davis Factor, the founder of Smashbox Cosmetics, asked her to develop an exclusive Nicky Hilton makeup kit. Actually, the collection was a no-brainer. “The cat eye is my every-day go-to makeup look,” Nicky says, “So we made The NY Classic Cat Eye Kit, The London Colorful Graphic Cat Eye Kit, and the L.A. Natural Cat Eye Kit. We created cute cosmetic cases for the kits to go in and now they’re sold exclusively on Smashbox.com. A huge cat lover, she has two, with the collectively funny names of Mac and Cheese. “I’ve always been a cat person,” she claims, adding, “They’re so elegant and stealth and mysterious. Very independent.” “Like yourself ?” I ask. “I would say so,” she replies. Not one to shy away from work, she wrote a book, 365 Style, published last year by Harlequin, and now has another pet project, her handbag line simply named Nicky’s Capsule Collection with Linea Pelle. “When I was 17, my first foray into the fashion world was handbags. I always say it was my first true love. I love designing them and buying them—so this was really fun for me. I just wanted to keep the collection really timeless and classic so they can be in your closet for years to come.” Google ‘Paris and Nicky’ and a zillion photos pop up of the duo carrying the latest ‘it’ bags, but for her, Nicky claims that’s changed. “When I was younger I was all about the ‘it’ bag, but

no longer. They’re only ‘it’ for a short time and then you bump into everyone and their mother on the street carrying one. Now I like to pick up my handbags on my travels. Whether it’s from a flea market in San Tropez or a handcrafted one I’ve discovered while on vacation—they’re unique, and I know no one else back home will have one.” Nicky took to her hotel roots and cleverly named the bags after her favorites, like the Bowery Crossbody, the Roosevelt Backpack, the Mercer Tote, the Chateau Satchel, and then there’s the Waldorf Canteen Crossbody—named after the storied NYC hotel that her great grandfather bought in 1949. Well, sort of. Conrad Hilton bought the Waldorf-Astoria’s management company and a 30-year lease to run it. It was Nicky’s grandfather, Barron, who polished off the deal in 1979 by buying the land the hotel sits on for the relatively paltry sum of $35 million. Last year, the Anbang Insurance Group of China paid (insert sound of cash register) $1.95 billion for the Waldorf—the most expensive hotel ever sold. When it comes to charity, Nicky says all of the Hilton grandchildren are encouraged to be a part of the family’s Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. The foundation’s assets are currently around $2.5 billion. In 2010, Barron Hilton joined Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren Buffet and other billionaires in ‘the Giving Pledge’—all vowing to give a vast majority of their wealth to charity. Barron has pledged to give 97 percent of his wealth to the Hilton Foundation. Nicky’s also a contributor to the Race to Erase MS, the charity founded by Nancy Davis. “I lost my grandmother to MS a few years ago, so it’s one that’s near and dear to my heart. And Nancy is a very close family friend.” Asked what she’d like to change about herself, Nicky admits she’d like to be more trusting. “I’m very, ver y wary of people. I don’t easily trust. I think it’s from watching people take advantage and screw people over who are close to me. I’ve seen it so many times firsthand, so I’m very cautious and have my guard up.” The solution to that might lie in a time machine which Nicky says she wouldn’t mind rewinding to the beginning. “Sometimes I wish I was a baby again. Life was so easy. Being pushed around in a stroller. Being dressed. Getting fed. No worries…no responsibility…no accountability…pure innocence.” Wouldn’t we all?

ANNA SHAY

La Dolce Vita Anna takes to Fontanone del Gianicolo in her Valentino gown after the Paris couture show

Anna Shay, socialite, mother, daughter, and loyal friend, is the quintessential modern-day heiress who possesses a unique quality of heart with a generous, giving nature. She exudes an inherent strength, affluence, class, and timeless elegance —traits for which she credits her family heritage. She has an enigmatic and magnanimous spirit that can be very demure, coquettish and reserved one instant—sociable and gregarious the next.

Here, Anna Shay answers the Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire Your passion? Everything! Each day is different, and I like the challenges in life. I’m passionate about my family, my son and my dogs. I’m passionate about the world of art, the world of music, and fashion. Your heroes? My father, mother and son. My parents are my heroes because they have taught me values, morals, honor, respect, loyalty and principals. These things are rare qualities today. My son Kenny, is my inspiration. We learn from each other, perhaps more than we realize. The knowledge and wisdom my parents instilled in me and the unconditional love my son gives me, inspires and energizes me. Your fashion? To me, fashion is art. The designers are the artists. They allow me to create my vision. In my opinion there are no boundaries or limits in fashion. Favorite getaway? Anywhere—if I’m with the people I care about…and everywhere because I like to learn about new cultures, people and history. Although, my favorite places are Paris, Rome and Florence. Five blessings? My mother, my father, my son, my six Labradors, and my true friends. Currently reading? Nothing at the moment, actually, I’m writing a story for Kenny, my son Happiest moment? The day Kenny was born.

DNA change? Not to be so trusting. There are people who take advantage of others. Favorite ice cream? I am lactose intolerant; however, I seem to be fine with gelatos when I’m in Italy! Favorite song? I love all music from Classical to Rock to Hip Hop. I was classically trained on the piano since I was three. It would be unjust to pick one piece because every artist expresses creativity differently, but with equal passion. You, reincarnated? I would have to say a combination of my parents and my son. I always go back to my family. My father was the epitome of a man. My mother is the epitome of a lady, and my son is perfection in an imperfect world. Favorite charities? The George Lopez Foundation, of which I am an active board member. The foundation that my parents created, the Shay Foundation is also very important to me. We focus on education, arts, performing arts and music. My parents were founding members of the Music Center. Fondest memory? Memories are created by each of us. How we choose to interpret them as good or bad is up to us. I have many fond memories and many more to come. It all comes down to how you look at life itself !

52 GENLUX FALL 2015

CARMEN ELECTRA Ask Carmen Electra for five words to describe herself and you’ll get: fiery, passionate, compassionate, romantic and protective. She wanted to add ‘hopeless’ in front of romantic— so let’s bonus her one word. The men she’s dated or married are as indelibly linked to Carmen as her career. There were the marriages to NBA star Dennis Rodman (annulled after nine days) and to Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction. Carmen, who started off life 43 years ago as Tara Leigh Patrick in the tiny town of Sharonville, Ohio (on Wikipedia, they claim two “famous” people, Carmen being one), has been a dancer, singer, model, actor, songwriter, author and philanthropist. Here, she chimes in on the Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire.

I’m in my cozy house in Bel-Air. I’m in bed with the sliding doors open and I’m looking out to the pool and the incredibly beautiful view. Your style? When I started again with music, I picked up a little bit of dancer style. We’re in sneaker wedges, leggings, snapbacks—more sporty, sexy looks. I also got into a boho hippie style. I’m in love with that vibe. Decompression chamber? Tahiti was a pivotal place for me. Being near the ocean changed my life. Every day I would wake up and just look at the water and meditate. I have a really hard time sitting still, but the sound of the ocean made things clearer for me. Retail fix? I love hitting Barneys, Saks and Neiman’s and then Rodeo. I’ll run into Dolce, or La Perla. And then I’ll do Robertson, Intermix and boutiques and then Melrose. Alexander McQueen, Mark Jacobs, and Vivienne Westwood. Your kickstart? My best friends were going to ABT and Joffrey, and I knew I had to dance! I met some hip-hop dancers and found I was better at jazz and hip-hop than ballet. Then I met Shane Sparks in high school and we would go to teen clubs and go battle in Cincinnati. There was a girl from LA who told me, “You are such a good dancer, I can see you dancing for Janet Jackson.” I said, “Are you serious? You think I would have a chance?” Your heroes? My mom and dad. I have so much gratitude that I had parents who wanted me to have a better life than they GPS location?

had. Wow, they really dedicated their lives to me. My mom passed away. She was a third-degree black belt. A real badass. I couldn’t get away with anything with Mom. She had five other kids before me, so by the time she had me, she said, “You’re going to make a life for yourself.” Early lessons? When I was younger I was very shy and extra compassionate. I remember going to elementary school in a predominately white neighborhood. There was one AfricanAmerican girl who nobody would play with, so I would, and I would stand up for her and myself. I grew up like that. We were taught to accept people for who they are. We don’t all want to be the same anyway. It would be a boring world. Your genealogy? I’m Cherokee Indian, Scottish and some Irish, my dad’s side is Irish and German. New lessons? Our Genlux shoot! I loved our shoot so much. I’m obsessed. I want to walk around in a kimono. It inspired me. From each experience I take something. Your charities? I go to the Race to Erase MS gala every year. I think Barbara Davis is a wonderful person. When my mom passed away, I was really close to this woman who I call my LA mom. She started feeling ill and I called Barbara immediately and she got her into the best doctors. I’m dedicated to her charity. I also had my own charity, Head to Hollywood. I’ve been to The Life Ball in Vienna, where I performed one year and walked in Gaultier’s show. Worst trait? I’m my own worst critic. I’m a thinker and

perfectionist. It comes from all the ballet training. People who don’t know me see me as a man-stomper. Almost like a superhero character. Life lesson? At some point, even for me, I had to stop using my past traumatic experiences as an excuse and choose: Am I going to take this experience and learn from it...or let it destroy my life? Am I going to let anybody have that power over me? Hell, no! Love life? I just started dating someone. It’s fairly new, about three or four months, so I’m not really talking about it much. He’s extremely intelligent, and that turns me on. All I can say is, so far, so good. Future kids? I love children. So if it happens I will be very happy, and if it doesn’t, I’ll be very content with that. My mom was pregnant at 15, and my sister was pregnant at 14. It was a constant thing in my mom’s head to make sure that didn’t happen to me. At a very early age, I would ask her if I was sexy. I want to be the best mom I could possibly be. I’ve never felt ready, but my doctor said that I’m Fertile Myrtle. Your regrets? To be honest I have no regrets, because out of my experiences I’ve learned something that I really didn’t understand I was learning while I was in it. I look for the gratitude in the hard situation and find ways to get through it. Life is like that—good and bad. It doesn’t do you any good to sit around and feel sorry for yourself. I understand that when you’re in it, it’s hard to see. Low point? Life doesn’t always stay on that highest level of happiness. You’re on top of the world, then you go down. That’s when you have to dig deep, and for me, I go straight to my books. I’m not the only one this happened to. How can I change this? Then, you go back up…you forget… everything’s

going perfect…life couldn’t be better, and then boom, it hits you again. That’s life. First gig? ‘Soul Train.’ I was so excited. I got to do the Scrabble Board, and the Soul Train line…they put me on the risers. OMG, I’m on ‘Soul Train.’ I made it! Lucky break? I was on the dance floor at a club and a girl came up to me and asked me if I’d audition for her all-girl band that Prince was putting together. She took me to Capital Records, and I got signed to a demo deal. Prince got a hold of me and said, “I don’t think you should be in someone else’s band, you should have your own.” That’s where it all started. Working with Prince was such an incredible learning experience. Spiritual tools? I have The Pocket Dalai Lama. I have so many great books. Pema Chodron’s Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living. And The Language of Letting Go has been very helpful. You’re learning? I let go of the past but I’m always a forward thinker, so I’m trying to learn how to stay in the now. A good book is The Power of Now. I have trouble staying in the now. I Am That, by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, that was a gift from Joan Jett. What’s next? I’m working with Mikey Minden. I recorded my first single, I like it Loud. I released three singles so far that have gone to the top 10 on the Billboard charts. Check out Werq, and the other song is called Around the World. Four blessings? A career that I love, my health, my family, and I also have gratitude for still getting excited to go to Disneyland. I have this Buddhism book that talks about being childlike, and I swore to myself I wasn’t going to lose that. I don’t ever want to lose that. G

Ireland Baldwin is the charming 6-foot-2-inch daughter of superstars Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Yes, that daughter... once the center of a tumultuous custody battle. FANTASY IRELAND Ireland Baldwin, 19, bears genuine Hollywood royalty in her DNA—the daughter of not one, but two bona-fide superstars. Dad is Alec Baldwin, and Mom is Kim Basinger. The couples’ ‘War of the Roses’ divorce and contentious custody battle for Ireland hit center stage when Alec’s angry voicemail to Ireland (allegedly, she wasn’t taking his phone calls) was leaked to the public. She was only 11. That storm has finally passed, and recently, Alec and Kim teamed up to gift Ireland with a new Ford pickup—for being accepted to college. Here, the tomboy-at-heart tackles our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire. You’re wearing? I’m wearing Unif boots, one of my favorite ankle boots, and a Unif army jacket. My shirt is by Huxley. It says ‘Hell Was Full So I Came Back.’ It’s pretty sick. I have a University of Georgia shirt tied around my waist because I’m an honorary Southern girl.

I was born in Beverly Hills, but I like to consider myself a citizen of the world, because I’ve bounced around. I’m a traveler, explorer. I grew up in LA, but have lived in a different place almost every year of my life.

GPS location?

At 16 I signed to IMG models. It was fun in the beginning, being able to travel…though it was also frustrating to see my friends excel in school and go on to the collegiate level of sports. I was envious of that, but I was traveling and meeting phenomenal people.

First gig?

My first campaign was an editorial for Elle magazine. That’s the first shoot I worked with Joe Zee, whom I’ve worked with again and again. He’s such great energy. I just love him. He was styling the shoot. It was so easy and fun and the beginning of everything. Favorite shoot?

My parents split up when I was 7 or 8. I was living in New York and my mom moved me back to LA. My dad stayed in New York. My parents had a long custody battle over me. It was a bloody divorce. I don’t believe any child should have to speak to lawyers and deal with that. That took up a big chunk of my life. I was being dragged and torn in different directions. The entire situation took away my identity, and I did whatever would make whomever happy in the moment.

Hardest times?

These past two years were a blur—I disappeared emotionally and was in a dark place, and ended up in rehab. When I first got there I didn’t understand why I was there or what it all meant, but then I really engaged and buckled down and dealt with things that I needed to deal with. I tied it back to my parents and we got so much closer.

Bad decisions?

I was pretty well aware of their celebrity from the jump. The day I was born, my dad got arrested because he sprayed a photographer’s windshield. True story: I was about 10 and sitting with my friend and we watched my mom in sex scenes in 9 ½ Weeks. And I also saw her in 8 Mile. I always looked at it as art. I knew from a very early age that they were famous.

Famous folks?

I never looked in the mirror and thought, “You are so hot.” It took a lot of other people to believe in me before I could believe in myself. It was my trainer, my nutritionist, my stylist, my agent—all who believed in me.

Self-esteem?

I like what Audrey Hepburn said: “I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.”

Favorite quote?

Happy ending? I’m really happy now that I’m at David Todd [modeling agency]. I’m passionate about modeling again and I’m in a healthy, open and honest relationship with my manager. He’s helped me to let it go and not stress about working out—to be happy. He tells me, “You’re going to be happy when you’re not manic.” Now that I’m kind of just doing it and finding my own way, it’s much better.

I think God is a woman. Some days I think God is a tree. My higher power is experience. I connect more spiritually through the beauty I see in nature. Or having a conversation with someone who has the vibe of being a spiritual being. I pick up on energy. Your spirituality?

I stopped writing for two years. I didn’t write a thing. But being out of the world and pent up in this beautiful little rehab, I would sit out there from the moment I woke up in the morning and write for five or six hours. There was this one man at the treatment center...we’d talk for three hours every night. I hadn’t learned more in my entire life-time than during those talks with him. His name is Steve, and he lives in Louisiana. My rehab brought me into conversation, patience, and love.

Life lesson?

DNA change? I’m the most disorganized organized person. I’m a mess. I get so impatient and manic about things. I’m a perfectionist, so I’d like to be more mellow. I’m critical and judgmental about my own things, but not about other people.

I’m so wishy-washy about fashion. I’m all visual. When I see an outfit or collection, I can really appreciate the manufacturing and art and science behind making clothes, but in terms of my own dressing, I’m lazy. Truth be told, I’m a lazy California girl who’s in yoga pants or beach bikini.

Your fashion?

Genlux shoot?

the stylist.

This was one of the best shoots I’ve ever done. I loved

Latest victory? Going out on my own and going to college at New York Film Academy for cinematography. Your type? I don’t have a type. I’m into every type of guy. I have no limitations. Today’s model is so good looking, I want to ride on his back into the sunset.

I just started a new brand called Babes of Anarchy. It’s more of a blog—a creative space for people to share. I was anorexic and had bulimia for five or six years of my life, so I knew there was a need for a positive place for girls to go to tell their stories.

What’s next?

Favorite charities? I’m a crazy animal advocate, so I’d say the SPCA and PETA. I’m a non-fur girl. Many times I’ve turned down wearing fur on a shoot. I won’t even wear boots that have fur trim. Favorite burger? Okay, if we’re talking grimy road burger, I get a threeby-three at In-N-Out with whole grilled onions, no lettuce or tomato, because we don’t have time for that. I’ve done a four-by-four. I’ve even gone five-by-five. There’s this one place, Byron Burger in London, that’s amazing…and Surf Burger in Pensacola. Here, there’s Golden State Burger on Fairfax. The best burger is at Father’s Office. I used my ‘fake’ just to get a burger there. It’s worth a fake ID. I like cheese fries. Umami Burger’s the bomb too. Your diet? It’s just about being in a healthy mind frame. It’s not complicated. It’s what works for you. Yeah, I want to eat burgers and pizza every day. Best man? My dad’s always been the coolest guy in my life. He’s intelligent and he knows about so many things. I’ve always adored him.

We’re very close. She’s an artist and one of those people who tries something one time and becomes really good at it. She’s surfing now.

Your mom?

Your future? I’m really excited. My heart is healthy, my head is healthy, and I’m feeling like a new girl…as cheesy as that sounds. I’m seeing good things.

102 GENLUX FALL 2015

When I was seven, I was sitting with my mother and a French countess who looked very glamorous with her false eyelashes, hexagonal printed mini-dress, and calf-length boots made of some new breathable material by DuPont. Her beautiful hair was tied in a tiny plait at the back of her head. She was very haughty and very naughty. Smoking crazily, she looked at my mother, who was feeling up-to-date wearing a long brown corduroy midi she’d just purchased, and said, “My god, you look so dowdy in that! They’ve not brought back that hideous length, have they?” I remember the countess went on, saying how she was never going to wear that horrible length. Well, from that day onwards I rarely wear midis. I like them on other people, but not on me. The other day I went to Valentino on Sloane Street in London. I admit I’m a bit of a fan nowadays. It’s a long way away from Yohji Yamamoto, but there is something very ‘school girl’ and gothic (which always attracts me) about their latest collection. I asked the sales girls if I could please try on a black and white dress in a size larger than my size because I wanted it to swing. They disagreed and said that I should try it on in my size. I put on the larger size, got out the pins, and made it into a mini. The girls argued, “No you cannot do this, the designers have a specific length they want their clothes to be and it’s too big.” I thought this is all very well if you are the shape they want their clothes to be on, but I am not. I like to customize clothes—I do not want to be just a label. They went on, “You are photographed all the time and Valentino won’t like it.” With all due respect, I admire Valentino, I admire designers, but I am Amanda Eliasch, and I like to wear what I like to wear, and that won’t change. I bought the dress and remodeled it elsewhere. I love this collection, but like all collections by any designer, you must wear what you like and how you like it. In any case, there is also much to gained from studying traditional costumes. I am now at the Mayr Clinic in Althausee, a small traditional village in Austria—high up in the salt-mine district where the Nazis hid 6,500 pieces of art stolen from the Jews. People here are encouraged to wear their national costumes every day—a long way from the couturiers of Paris and Italy, but goodness, just as pretty. Write to me at amanda@genlux.com

SERIOUSLY, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT...

BY LAURA DUNN (the fabulous365.com blogger)

OTK BOOT

If I could get only one boot this FW 2015/16 season, it would be the black suede over-the-knee boot by Giuseppe Zanotti. Add some serious fringe to the mix and now we have another piece that’s rolling a few trends into one. This over-the-knee boot has a smaller heel that makes it easy for daytime walking, but the suede makes it rich enough to be that go-to boot for evening. Calling all fashion-i-tas! You must have at least one over-the-knee boot this fall...and this one is a great choice! Giuseppe Zanotti boot, $2070, Giuseppe Zanotti, Beverly Hills, 310-550-5760; netaporter.com

COVER ME Leave it to Louis Vuitton to come up with a cell phone case with technology that’s so new, no one else has it! Let me explain: Louis Vuitton’s brand-new phone case is just like a folio cover with the classic LV monograms, that opens up like a book. Upon opening it you will find a flat side that’s covered with a plastic strip. Under that strip is a gecko suction type of technology. My specialist at Louis Vuitton, Nadine DeNardo, explained that all I needed to do was line up my phone, press it down firmly, and it would stay there until I wanted it off. Nothing to slide it into...and only a flap to open. After having my initials stamped on the inside cover, we were ready to test out the safety of this case. I’m so hard on phones that I should actually not be allowed to even carry one! Nadine promised that the cover would protect the phone no matter how hard I was on it. Day two: dropped it into a puddle during a serious downpour in Hawaii. Not only was the phone not broken, it was still dry! That was nothing short of a miracle, as LV does not promise it to be waterproof. So chic, so functional, so musthave...for the guy or girl who wants it all! Louis Vuitton Cell Phone Cover, Louis Vuitton, Beverly Hills, 310-859-0457

LIGHT ME UP Two trends rolled into one: the sequin turtleneck from Dior for this FW 2015/16. This iconic sweater is gracing the pages of every fashion publication and could be just about the most talked-about piece of the season. To know me is to know that I adore the bling. Put it on a turtleneck, call it a daytime piece, and now you have my attention! Just this past week I wrote about sequins for daytime on my blog and showed an amazing pair of sequin jeans. Had I owned this sequined top…well, that would have been my story…and I would have stuck to it! I just about fainted in Harrods a few months back when I walked by the Dior boutique and saw the silver turtleneck on a mannequin (it comes in black and gold also). It was under a leather jumper, and I swear that mannequin whispered my name. Dior silver turtleneck, Dior, Beverly Hills, 310-859-4700, dior.com

I want to shout this name from the rooftops! Those amazing women who brought us Hard Candy nail polish in the 90s and Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer earlier this year, are back yet again. This time with a lip gloss that’s just about as fabulous as it gets. For me to put down my Chanel Glossimer, pick up a Smith & Cult Lip Lacquer, and actually walk out the front door of my home is nothing less than a miracle! The eight different colors are spoton. The gloss is gooey perfection. So great is this gloss, I am 100% hooked…and I know you will be too! Smith & Cult Lip Lacquers, 22 shiny dollars! smithandcult.com

The other day I was lunching with a close friend who mentioned that she was headed to Sydney, Australia on a business trip. She followed that with, “Hey, come join me?” And just like that, I was on my way down under. Unfortunately, when we arrived, so had the winter season, so from day one, it poured. According to a few Aussies, they’d never seen that much rain in Sydney. Regardless, I wasn’t about to let it affect my mood. Staying at the Four Seasons Sydney may have had something to do with it—where every waking morning was met with a hypnotic view of the iconic Sydney Opera House. It was both wondrous and a bit surreal. Then I thought, how could I leave without seeing one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef? Two and a half hours later (traveling on my own for the first time in my life), on a sunny Sunday morning, I landed at Hamilton Island, one of the tiniest airports I’ve been to.

116 GENLUX FALL 2015

Over 30 years ago, when Marie France Van Damme began her career as a garment manufacturer and designer for retailers like Macy’s and Lord & Taylor, she might have had a clue that one day she’d launch her own luxury brand. Now, her eponymous collection—defined by its versatility to transition seamlessly from city to resort and from day to night—is sold globally at world-class retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, Selfridges, and Bergdorf Goodman. You’ll also find it at over 100 luxury resorts. Oh, and in case you’re wondering if she’s related to the Belgian martial artist and action star, the answer is no. Where’s your favorite place to escape to?

Favorite items for this season?

The Andaman Sea. Thailand offers such a wealth and elegance of culture. I love the deserted beaches near Railay in Krabi. The white coral sand and beautiful turquoise clear waters are breathtaking. I love cruising on my boat down from Phuket to Malaysia. Name three items you couldn’t leave behind. An

embroidered silk chiffon kurta—one of my own designs—is something that I bring with me on every trip, because it can be worn day and night. I also never leave without Chanel Lip Gloss No. 11 and the travel bag from my collection. It’s large, but fits CHANEL everywhere—even into Glossimer the overhead compartment lipgloss, $30, or under your seat so you chanel.com don’t need to check in and wait for your luggage. What shoes do you bring?

Silver Havaianas. Also Gianvito Rossi’s high heels, flats and boots. They’re my favorites, as the fit is always perfect. What handbag?

Hermès Birkin matte crocodile bag in black.

If you could take only one person on vacation with you? My son is

the perfect travel companion as we share the same passions. We both love and appreciate great food and wines. We can walk for hours across a city, taking in the museums or exploring. He never complains, and doesn’t mind carrying my bags. You can’t find a better companion than that!

My favorite brand is Chanel. Over the years I’ve collected a lot of vintage Chanel pieces, from little black jackets to jewelry. But this season it would have to be my new little ‘Croco’ dress. I call it the Polo dress; it takes two seconds to pull over my head, and I look instantly chic. I also love Dr. Lancer Skincare. His products keep my skin feeling fresh and moisturized no matter what I’m doing or where I’m traveling.

How do you go from day to night without taking your entire closet with you?

This is exactly why I launched my own line! That is the DNA of my collection: versatile pieces that can take you from the beach to the office, to evening. I like to create simple yet elegant dresses that you can wear to work and dress up with accessories or just a pair of high heels for the evening. My silk caftans can be worn for lunch at a resort, and with a silk slip underneath, it becomes a chic dress for dinner. Favorite room in your home?

My office, where my husband and I have our computers, has become my favorite room, and where we spend probably too much time. It has an amazing view looking out at the sea and one of my favorite Chinese contemporary paintings. It’s not the prettiest room in the house, but the one I always seem to gravitate toward! What’s your favorite pastime?

I love to spend weekends at home, and I love to clean. I enjoy organizing my closets, cooking, and entertaining.

What are your working on?

Two new stores: One just opened in Phuket and the other’s opening in Singapore in November. I’m also working on a collection of sunglasses available later this year.

FALL 2015 GENLUX 123

Genlux Out-of-Towner

Salvatore Ferragamo’s creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti, certainly has his finger on the heartbeat of the iconic brand. A ten-year veteran of the company, Giornetti began his career at Ferragamo as an assistant to the knitwear designer in menswear, and soon stepped into the role of creative director for the men’s division. In January 2010 he began designing the women’s ready-to-wear collection, and within a few months was appointed creative director of the entire Ferragamo brand. Now with the reopening of its Beverly Hills flagship boutique, lead by Giornetti, the Italian luxury fashion house unveils its impressive new retail concept by architect William Sofield, that showcases the brand’s Hollywood roots (Ferragamo was founded there 100 years ago!) –Courtney Fortune

How do you look refreshed after a long flight? A quick tennis match after a long flight is a sure way to reset my body, relax my mind, and refocus. What do you wish LA had more of that you have in Florence? There’s a sense of respect in Florence for traditional craft, art, and history, that’s inherently cultural. What do you wish Florence had that LA has? LA is the epicenter of cinematic creativity, where Ferragamo himself first became ‘Shoemaker to the Stars.’
