THIS

REMARKABLE

BOOK FOLLOWS THAT STORY FROM THE REHEARSALS, THE SOUND CHECKS, TO THE STAGE AND BEYOND.

Told through rare and unseen photographs and the memories of those who took part, the book is much more than the story of one concert. Eric Clapton talks about George’s contrariness while Eric Idle, Michael Palin and Ringo Starr reveal a quiet, social recluse who loved company and couldn’t shut up. Sam Brown remembers his ruthless honesty and compassion, Klaus Voorman his exasperation at the state of the planet and Ravi Shankar his dedication to meditation and the sitar. Tom Petty recalls the time he spent as a Traveling Wilbury, along with Jeff Lynne who is just one of many to comment on George’s extraordinary songwriting. Tom Hanks and Andy Fairweather Low tell of high- speed rides in ‘The Rocket’ and Jim Capaldi and Terry Gilliam remember George’s love of laughter. Most poignantly, Olivia and Dhani Harrison recall a husband and a father.

ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOS FROM THROUGHOUT GEORGE’S LIFE, CONCERT FOR GEORGE IS A PERSONAL INSIGHT INTO ONE OF THE 20TH CENTURY ’S BEST LOVED SONGWRITERS. I could do something like that some day. That was the perfect idea. You get a little audience, you record it, so that you can do it good and mix it later. You have all your best pals on there being groovy and making it interesting. I mean if I had a 'special', I'd like to, you know, have a few people who mean something to me. George Harrison

We tried not to be sad, but instead celebrated the life and music of a great artiste, the beautiful ‘quiet’ one from Liverpool who became a man of many words as well as worlds, a wise, coveted friend, father and true seeker…He did all this and much and still managed to have more fun that the rest of us. Olivia Harrison

You find yourself crying at times and then you find yourself really being happy for George. I mean, here is a guy at the age of 27 writing lyrics like, ‘don’t let me wait too long’ and ‘I really want to see you’. Who else at that age was writing a lyric like that? Jim Keltner

My dad didn’t like to see people upset, so I think the key is just to come and be happy. I am going to be nervous and not want to screw up but if I do I don’t think it’s going to ruin the whole evening. It’s pretty laid back, everyone’s friends. It’s going to be good fun and I am looking forward to it. Dhani Harrison

You’re on holiday with him and every morning he’d say, ‘Oh, come and see the trees’. ‘Okay, yeah’. And then the next day, ‘Oh, come and see the trees’. ‘Yeah, okay’. And then, ‘Come and see…’ ‘I’ve seen your bloody trees!’ Ringo Starr

One side of George was The Concert for Bangladesh, where here was an amazingly soulful, peaceful man seeking karma and all that; and the next minute he’d want to get behind the wheel of the most powerful vehicle in the country, driving at 193 miles-an-hour. I have been in a car with George down the Thames Valley and it was absolutely terrifying. Michael Palin

When we were rehearsing I thought that if he were here he’d probably say ‘thanks very much Eric but I don’t really want this’. Eric Clapton ‘Arpan’ was based on a very short piece that I had taught George on the houseboat in Kashmir. Subconsciously it was like painting different aspects of George’s moods- his fun loving times, his serious moments and philosophical moments. Ravi Shankar
