accomplished something no one in my immediate family had done: I went to college. While I worked hard to earn my degree, I’m an Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) graduate because of the financial generosity shown by those who went before me. One of my favorite chapters in Scripture is Hebrews 11, sometimes referred to as the “Hall of Faith.” It reminds me that we are called to step out in faith, even though we are not promised to see the results in this lifetime. The obedient faith and immense kindness of donors I will never meet enabled me to embark on an educational journey that forever shaped my worldview.

I learned the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of life while fostering a deep connection with my faith. My time on Bison Hill taught me that God is not intimidated by my many questions. There is no doubt that God could have taught the same lessons to me in any setting, but there is also no question for me that OBU is special. I recall an English professor challenging us to write a paper on a heavy topic. Sensing my trepidation, she asked whether I really thought the God of the universe would somehow be diminished by my writing a paper that asked uncomfortable questions,

forcing me to think deeply about God’s truth. I am so appreciative for the OBU professors, staff, and students who are not afraid to confront life’s biggest issues.

n 1966, the Beatles put into song how seniors often feel when receiving a required minimum distribution (RMD) from their traditional individual retirement account (IRA): “If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street. If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat. If you get too cold, I’ll tax the heat. … ’Cause I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxman.”

This song is a protest against ever-increasing taxes — a sentiment with which we can all relate! Although traditional IRAs are an excellent way to save for retirement, paying the income tax associated with withdrawals can be frustrating. Thankfully, Congress recently enacted changes that can help you avoid income taxes, maximize your ability to provide for yourself, and support the ministries you love — all through a charitable gift annuity (CGA).

FUND A CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY DIRECTLY FROM YOUR IRA If you own a traditional IRA and are age 70½ or older, you’re eligible to make qualified charitable distributions (QCDs), also known as IRA charitable rollovers. ommy and Barbara Kramer are staunch believers that education can change lives. They should know: Both earned multiple college degrees, and Barbara spent 30 years teaching second grade before retirement.

That passion for learning led to an obvious decision when the Kramers discussed how to share their blessings with others. Together with WatersEdge, they established a scholarship endowment for students at First Baptist Church, Durant, their local congregation. The scholarship helps fund qualified students who choose to attend universities throughout Oklahoma.

r. James Swain lives a life dedicated to sharing the Gospel, especially through his ministry to Oklahoma Baptists. His work has taken him from pastoring for more than 20 years to serving as conference center director at Falls Creek.

Today, Swain is finding joy in his new role as president of Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children (OBHC).

Why are you passionate about this position?

dational passage of Scripture from Psalm 127: ‘Children are a gift from the Lord.’ For 30-plus years in ministry, I’ve had a passion for impacting the next generation. How do we reach children and young people with the Gospel?

“We like to think about our mission as providing hope and help for the hurting. Yes, we want to meet their physical needs, but most importantly we want to meet their spiritual needs.

We want to see trajectories change in

their families because of what God is doing through our ministry.”

Are there any current specific giving initiatives for OBHC? “The major point of emphasis right now is what we call ‘Difference Makers.’ We want people to join us by becoming monthly givers to the ministry. This kind of giving helps us plan ahead and think about our budget and the scope of our ministry. And, we’re always encouraging people to consider being a legacy giver by leaving a gift to OBHC through their estate plans. The vast majority of our legacy givers go through WatersEdge. As our partner, WatersEdge also manages OBHC’s endowment and helps us to be good stewards of the resources we have.”

What is one serious obstacle to funding?

“We have a faithful base of donors, and we are very thankful for them.

But that base is growing older. An important question we have to consider: How do we engage the next generation in giving and participating in our ministry? I think that’s a challenge for all nonprofits.”

What are some non-traditional ways individuals and churches can offer support?

“Our ministry is very dependent on volunteers at a lot of different levels.

Every Monday night on our OKC campus, staff and volunteers lead classes for single moms to help them grow and develop. Volunteers are also at the heart of our Hope Pregnancy Center.

“We love receiving ‘gifts in kind’ as well. For example, one Sunday school class collects cans of soup for the Baptist Home for Girls. It’s simple and tangible, and it keeps the ministry in front of the church all the time. Every Hope Pregnancy Center has a ‘baby boutique’ where parents can participate in classes and earn diapers, clothes, car seats, and more, most of which are donated.”

Share a story about a donor who has made a memorable difference.

“On our OKC campus, as we’ve transitioned from a traditional children’s home to our Children’s Hope program serving single moms and their children, we needed to adapt and remodel the facilities. One couple

from a local church gave a large gift to remodel one of our cottages. Each mom who lives in that cottage now has her own kitchen space. This is a fundamental need as many of the mothers are learning for the first time how to shop, cook, and have their own living area. The husband and wife who gave are very kind, unassuming people, and they want to help those moms get on track.”

We want to see trajectories change in their families because of what God is doing through our ministry.”

How have you been impacted by a resident’s story?

“The day I was elected president, a young man from Boys Ranch Town gave his testimony. He shared with me that when he was 5 years old, the police came to his house. He then went on to describe how he and his brother arrived at Boys Ranch Town with everything they owned in Walmart sacks. To hear him talk about the uncertainty and instability, and then to see how God has moved in his life and the young man he’s become … He is the very essence of the reason we do this work. He and his brother needed to be in a place where they could have the stability and the security that have

enabled them to grow, thrive, and come to know the Lord.

Why is OBHC’s mission worth supporting?

“We wish we didn’t have to exist.

But the reality is, in this fallen, broken world, the need for us to exist is greater today than when we were established 120 years ago. As the world grows darker, the need for the Light grows greater. We have the opportunity to be salt and light. We are desperately trying to do this good Gospel work. We need three things: prayer, people, provision.”

On Track DESPITE A FEW CHALLENGES, THE INAUGURAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM AT OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY IS FLOURISHING.

A

lex Shuman has been fascinated with building and designing things since childhood. When he and his friend re-engineered his Nerf blasters to shoot at a higher speed, Shuman was hooked.

“Initially, I thought, ‘That’s stupid to try; they shoot just fine,’” he remembers, laughing. “I quickly figured out that’s not true. You can make them shoot way faster.”

And an engineer was born.

Shuman spent his first year at Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) as a physics major, but when the engineering program launched earlier this year, he couldn’t resist adding it as a second major. He realizes being part of the first-ever graduating class of engineers is an exciting opportunity, but also a weighty one.

“There’s a little bit of responsibility on our shoulders to make sure we put a good foot forward when we go into the field, to put that good reputation back onto OBU,” he says.

Engineering has long been the most requested program by prospective students, so creating this new division was a logical next step. The school originally budgeted for 12 incoming engineering students for the Fall 2023 semester.

However, when classes kicked off in August, 37 students had enrolled. The program is a major milestone in the university’s 113-year history.

But the road to this successful launch wasn’t an easy one.

Dr. Heath Thomas, OBU president, has never been one to sidestep a challenge. He has led the student body through one obstacle after another, from a devastating ice storm in 2020 to a tornado in April 2023. So it was no surprise when the school initiated blueprints for an engineering program while the nation was still grappling with the aftermath of the COVID pandemic.

“We’re not afraid to recognize that doing the right thing often costs us, but the good news is that God has made us to do hard things,” Thomas says. “We shouldn’t have even thought about laying the groundwork for [engineering] during COVID, but we did because we were far behind the growth curve. OBU should have had engineering a decade ago.”

Dr. Chuck Baukal was hired as director of the new program in November 2022. Baukal, a licensed professional engineer, brings more to the table than just his engineering background.

At first glance, the twists and turns of Baukal’s career may seem baffling.

“Why on earth did I do some of the things that I did?” he says.

For instance, Baukal is a program evaluator for an agency

that accredits undergraduate engineering programs. Becoming a program evaluator while he was still working in industry proved to be an added stress, expense, and a drain on his time.

“I had to take vacation days to go on these accrediting visits,” Baukal remembers. “It had no benefit to my company whatsoever. And again, I’m thinking, ‘Why am I doing this?’”

Baukal also took seminary courses so he could become a better Sunday school teacher. While these classes weren’t advantageous to his job, he felt compelled to take the extra steps.

Now, all those “detours” in his professional journey are falling into place. Baukal recognized God was weaving together a foundation that prepared him to help build a stellar engineering program — one that could become a cornerstone of the university.

Baukal’s wealth of knowledge in industrial work, coupled with his nearly 38 years of college adjunct teaching experience, make him uniquely qualified to lead the engineering effort. He also has authored a number of books on industrial combustion and engineering education.

FORWARD FACING Since Baukal was hired, the pace has been rapid: recruiting students, helping design a complete renovation of Thurmond Hall (where the program will be housed), and

So, what’s different about OBU’s approach? For one, the class sizes. OBU boasts a student-to-faculty ratio of 15:1; during the first years of the engineering program, the opportunities for one-on-one time with a professor will be even greater.

“It’s very common at big schools that during the first two years you’re in monster classes,” Baukal says. “The professor has no clue who you are. How could they?”

While Baukal considers this

Throughout the chaos, though, Baukal has stayed focused on a personal goal: to create a well-rounded engineering curriculum. He realized several years ago that graduates were ill-prepared to enter the workforce. They had book knowledge but no practical experience.

Baukal sees this emphasis lacking in many programs around the country. Bigger schools prioritize professors’ research, which brings universities the funds needed to operate as well as notoriety to their faculty. But it comes at the expense of hands-on application.

“Graduates are not ready to start working because they only know the theory side,” Baukal says. “I’ve been frustrated for a long time about how we as a nation teach engineering. So when I saw this opportunity, I thought, ‘Here’s my chance to stop bellyaching and really do something different.’

“It’s my mission in life. I want our students to be better prepared,” Baukal says.

SPREADING THE WORD The new administrator can’t prepare students if there aren’t any enrolled in the program, so part of his job includes visiting places such as high schools, churches, and tech centers to recruit new students.

Freshman Sophia Ziesemer decided to attend OBU after a soccer scholarship paved her way to the university. Initially, she planned to enroll as a pre-med major, but after the engineering program was announced, she had a change of heart.

“I’ve always had a math, physics kind of brain,” she says.

“So seeing that OBU was going to have this program after I’d already decided to play soccer there, I really just felt God was moving me this way — and that it was the perfect place for me to be.”

FIT FOR THE JOB – From adjunct teaching to writing books and patenting new technologies, Dr. Chuck Baukal encountered many twists and turns in his career path.

He believes God has brought him right where he needs to be: leading the new engineering program at OBU.

This focus on aerospace engineering, Baukal says, is a key feature of the program and its placement within the state. The industry has been blossoming in Oklahoma over the past decade. OBU’s program leverages key partnerships with leaders in the field like Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Kratos, United Dynamics, and Envirosystems.

“Two of our advisors on the advisory board are the chief engineer at Boeing and the president of Kratos,” Baukal explains. “At our very first advisory board meeting, the chief engineer asks me, ‘What if we could guarantee all of your students an internship for all the summers they’re in school?’”

The industry demand extends beyond simple internships.

“I heard a story that for one year, the Boeing branch at Tinker Air Force Base could hire every electrical and mechanical engineer who graduated from an Oklahoma university, and it still wouldn’t be enough for them. That’s the demand. They just can’t get enough engineers,” Baukal says.

Ziesemer is majoring in mechanical engineering, one of two tracks students can take along with electrical engineering. Both tracks will relate to aerospace engineering, though the educational emphases are broad enough to transfer into any engineering career.

BEING DIFFERENT While Baukal considers this inaugural semester a success, he maintains the true measure is whether graduates are equipped to be a light for Christ in a world that’s never needed Him more.

And he takes this challenge seriously. He points to a famous quote from Albert Einstein: “Scientists investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been.”

The act of creation, Baukal says — invention and adaptation and problem solving — ref lects on the intensely creative God who designed and sustains the universe.

“That’s the why in Christian engineering. Are Christian engineers any different?” the director asks. “Obviously, we hope so. And we think so. As the creator, God is the ultimate engineer.”

Forks scrape plates. The ice in the drink machine clinks to the bottom of an empty glass.

He hears none of it.

But Paul connects easily with other Deaf. He is uniquely equipped to disciple them because he experiences the world in much the same way they do.

The commonalities between Paul and Joseph, a Senegalese convert from Islam, have helped Paul disciple him more effectively.

THANK the Lord that He is using missionaries like Paul and national believers like Joseph to reach the Deaf.

Though Joseph was already a believer when they met, he hungered to dive deeper into God’s Word. He had a basic understanding of the Gospel but couldn’t fully grasp the truths of written Scripture.

Joseph needed to see the Word, not just read it. Seeing is how he connects with the world. Paul understands this need to learn visually, and, along with StoryOne Camps, he teaches the Bible in a way Deaf can comprehend — through storying.

Paul used three sets of Bible stories that rely on sign language mnemonics to help Joseph commit the stories to memory more effectively. This visual

presentation of Scripture resonated with the new believer.

After attending the first StoryOne Camp, Joseph was sold on this storying method. When another was held, he returned.

“He felt so moved and so inspired, and we were excited for him to experience that,” Paul explains.

Now, because Joseph was given access to the Scripture in his heart language — Francophone African Sign Language — he’s passionate about sharing God’s Word with others who need access to the Gospel in a way they can understand.

as he continues to spread the Gospel to the Deaf while being burdened for his lost family members.

But Joseph’s faith has come at a cost.

His family has disowned him, but that hasn’t slowed him down. He’s working in a Deaf church, discipling other believers through this mnemonic storying method.

Another way this growing disciple is fulfilling the Great Commission is through his involvement with a Bible translation project. He is partnering with Paul and Deaf Pathway Global, an organization that transforms print translations of the Bible into visual resources.

BREAKING NEW GROUND NORTH METRO BAPTIST CHURCH RECEIVES LARGEST LOAN IN WATERSEDGE HISTORY

G

loomy skies and patches of rain couldn’t keep the members of North Metro Baptist Church from making history. When the congregation broke ground on a new campus earlier this year near Atlanta, Georgia, it was a major milestone for the 130-year-old Southern Baptist church. It was a chance for celebration, confirmation that God has been guiding the church toward a revitalized campus in a thriving community. Hundreds gathered at the building site on a Sunday morning in April to worship together and dedicate their future.

The campus also demonstrates a critical juncture for WatersEdge. The organization made history of its own when it financed $26 million for North Metro. The loan represents the largest in WatersEdge history. Bobby Hart, president of WatersEdge Ministry Services, met with the church staff and attended the groundbreaking service, which offered a clear picture of just how far the WatersEdge team has come.

“More than anything, this loan is a testament to God’s provision,” Hart says. “Yes, we’re blessed to be in this position, where we can provide loans to churches in a way WatersEdge.com

that furthers the Kingdom. But the significance isn’t ultimately about the number — it’s about seeing God moving in this congregation and in others like it across the country.”

God has indeed been moving at North Metro, providing clear direction even through uncertain economic times. When a party first approached the church and offered

to buy its current property, North Metro’s leadership hadn’t even considered moving to a new space. Even when they made the difficult decision to transplant their congregation to a new property, the global COVID pandemic stretched the process over several years and presented disheartening disruptions. The pathway to groundbreaking wasn’t linear; there were stops and starts, times of dis-

couragement, and seasons of doubt.

But through it all, the Lord was there, opening doors.

For Frank Cox, North Metro’s senior pastor for over four decades, that example of God’s steadfastness is what’s worth celebrating.

“Over these 43 years, I’ve seen a church emerge that’s willing to

dream a God-sized dream and trust Him each step of the way. And God has always been faithful to us,” he says. “That includes what’s happening now; we’re building in probably one of the worst times to build, economically speaking. But even through this, God is proving Himself to us. We’re excited to see what happens.”

Before they connected with WatersEdge, North Metro had conversations with numerous lenders, but struggled to find financing options that fit the church’s needs.

The loan was closed in early 2023, and groundbreaking for the new campus took place April 30. Since then, construction — projected to last 12-18 months — has been proceeding well. Signs indicate everything is on track for the new campus to open in 2024. In the meantime, North Metro is able to remain in its current facility, yet another sign of the Lord’s provision.

David Depuy received a well-earned promotion this past January, adding President of WatersEdge Advisors to his current title of Chief Investment Officer. It’s been quite the journey since he began as network administrator at WatersEdge in 1996, before the internet had even been integrated into the daily workflow. Prior to this promotion, Depuy held positions including accountant, controller, and director of investments. “I am called to be a service provider to those in frontline ministry,” he says. “I do what I do so that others — like pastors and missionaries — can minister and not worry about the finances.” Depuy attends Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma, with his wife, Andrea, and two children, Ryan and Kassidy.

Kristen Karr has seen many changes at WatersEdge since Shryln Treadwell, then Chief Operating Officer (COO), offered her a job in the fall of 2010. Treadwell soon became a professional mentor and close friend for Karr, making the new executive’s most recent promotion all the sweeter.

Starting January 1, 2023, Karr assumed the COO role after Treadwell’s retirement, and she’s thrilled to continue a tradition of excellence. “I’m excited that my new role affords me the opportunity to impact the entire organization, rather than just a subset of it,” Karr says. “Every day is different, and that’s life-giving for me. Dr. Reagan Bradford W

hen Dr. Reagan Bradford died this past June, he left behind a monumental legacy — not only with WatersEdge, but also with Southern Baptist ministries across Oklahoma.

In 2021, Bradford was appointed Director Emeritus of the WatersEdge Board of Trustees, a title he held until his death. Beginning in 1995, Bradford served in various capacities on the WatersEdge Board — including Board Chair — until the summer of 2023. His tenure came during a formational time for WatersEdge (then The Baptist Foundation of Oklahoma), and his counsel proved invaluable to CEO Robert Kellogg during the early years of his leadership.

“Dr. Bradford was my friend,” Kellogg says. “He invested heavily in me during my initial years as president, for which I am indebted. It was not a mutually beneficial relationship, as I gained so much more from Dr. Bradford than I gave back. I will miss him.”

In addition to his medical degree, Bradford held multiple degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, carving out an impressive niche in the Oklahoma medical community. During his distinguished career, he served as a research fellow at several organizations and was named director of cardiovascular research, scientific director, and eventually executive vice president of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. He also held positions with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the American Heart Association.

But more important to Bradford than his medical career was his family and his work for the Lord. In his obituary, published in The Oklahoman, Bradford was credited

as “the undisputed patriarch of the Bradford family. His family rarely heard about his professional and service-oriented accomplishments because he was focused on them.

He was the voice of wisdom and guidance; the steady hand that never knew an obstacle that couldn’t be overcome.”

Locally, he was a devoted member of Northwest Baptist Church for over 60 years, serving in various capacities including deacon and Sunday school teacher. His compassion for people was obvious, and WatersEdge COO Kristen Karr says she’ll never forget the way she felt seen and understood by him.

“What always struck me about Dr. Bradford is that he consistently made you feel important and valued, regardless of where your name appeared on the organizational chart,” Karr says. “It’s incredibly refreshing when someone with so many notable accomplishments takes the time to be gracious and kind to people who have nothing to offer him and who have no ability to enhance his status in any way.”

Apart from his positions with WatersEdge, he also served for many years as a member of the board of trustees for both Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. From 2010-2012, Bradford served as OBU’s Board Chair, and in 2015, he received the university’s J.M. Carroll award, given in recognition of outstanding denominational service in the state.

Bradford spent a lifetime investing into Kingdom work in Oklahoma, giving without expectation of a return. The dividends of his selfless service will be realized for years to come.
