EDITOR’S MESSAGE Happy Fall Cattle Producers,

I would like to first off thank the North Dakota and South Dakota Boards for allowing me the opportunity to take over the magazine editor/ad sales position. Thanks to Erika for her guidance and help as I take over this position and serve the Simmental breeders. I’ll first take a minute and introduce myself. My name is Amy Stangeland, my Husband Lucas and I, along with our three children Brooks, Jeslin, and Annabel, own and operate a farm and ranch in central ND. I also have a small in home business, Stangeland Creative Services, consisting of design and advertising work. I look forward to bringing my design and communication skills into this position. Thank you to everyone who helped out with and attended the Fall Focus this past September. We had the largest crowd in attendance for a Fall Focus so far!! If you didn’t get a chance to take in the event all presentations are available online to watch at www.fallfocus.org. Also a huge Thanks from the 2017 North Central Regional Classic Coordinators. They hosted a very successful record breaking event in Huron, SD this past summer. Take note of the ND and SD state sales coming up this December. You`ll see a preview of what’s being offered as you flip through this issue of the SD SimmenTeller and ND Simmental Scene. Thanks again for this opportunity and I look forward to serving you!! Sincerely,

Amy Amy Stangeland, Editor

ASA FALL FOCUS Above: 2017 ND Simmental Board, Standing (L to R): Secretary, Kim Myers; Tyler Kinn, David Doll, Todd Finke, Doug Bichler, JR Aufforth, Patrick Thorson. Seated (L to R): Derik Samuelson, President, Tim Clark; and Dusty Kunkel.

AMERICAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION AND NORTH DAKOTA SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION CO-HOST FALL FOCUS

T

he fourth annual American Simmental Association (ASA) Fall Focus was held in Bismarck, ND, September 17-21. The program featured an educational session, during which several industry professionals and scientists spoke about subjects focused around beef cattle breeding. The ASA Board of Trustees held meetings during the event, and attendees participated in interactive meetings and staff presentations. There were over 220 people in attendance, and among North Dakota dignitaries were Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. The educational program included the following speakers: Dr. Greg Lardy, North Dakota State University (NDSU), presented an overview of the state’s agricultural industry; Dr. Lauren Hanna,

NDSU, explained the basics of animal breeding and genetic selection; Dr. Rick Funston, University of Nebraska, Lincoln (UNL), spoke about increasing productive efficiency in cattle; Dr. Matt Spangler, UNL, discussed genetic advancements which can be used to create an ideal system for beef cattle breeding; and Dr. Mitch Abrahamsen, former Vice President of Research and Development at Cobb-Vantress, spoke about the poultry industry, highlighting the rapid genetic advancement the industry has seen, and how beef cattle breeders can apply those principles to keep up with a growing population. A panel of breeders addressed the use of economic selection indexes to aid in genetic selection for profitability in beef cattle. ASA staff provided project updates, including progress on the International Genetics Solutions (IGS) Feeder Profit

CalculatorTM, cow herd DNA roundup, the genetic evaluation using Biometric Open Language Tools (BOLT), state association programs, and more. Videos of the educational presentations can be viewed at fallfocus.org. Claye Kaelberer serves on the ASA Board of Trustees, and with his family, owns Kaelberer Simmentals in New Salem, ND. Kaelberer received positive feedback from many of the producers in attendance. “Breeders were impressed by the amount of information they received, and by the balance of the speakers,” Kaelberer reflects. Three new ASA programs were highlighted: the DNA Cow Herd Roundup, IGS Feeder Profit Calculator; and ASA Learning Library. These programs, like ASA, are focused on the commercial producer and relating the genetics seedstock breeders produce to

the ultimate product that commercial cattlemen are producing. “It was really encouraging to get that crowd of commercial cattlemen together with seedstock producers,” Kaelberer explains. Erika Kenner of Kenner Ranch Simmentals, Leeds, ND, also serves on the ASA Board of Trustees. “The commercial producer is greatly affected by the programs and direction of breed associations,” Kenner says. “Seedstock suppliers work hard on genetic

improvement, and it’s important for the commercial producer to learn what is available and to have input on their needs.” The 2018 Fall Focus will be held at the ASA National Headquarters in Bozeman, Montana, August 25-27. The event will be centered around ASA’s celebration of 50 years, an educational program, and interactive meetings. Founded in 1968, the American Simmental Association is headquartered

in Bozeman, MT. ASA is committed to leveraging technology, education and collaboration to accelerate genetic profitability for the beef industry. In keeping with its commitment, ASA, along with its partners, formed International Genetic Solutions -- the world’s largest genetic evaluation of beef cattle.

NDJSA NEWS

NEWS FROM THE NDJSA PRESIDENT

H

ello, I’m Fletcher Hennessy your newly voted North Dakota Junior Simmental Association President. I’m a third generation simmental breeder from Des Lacs, ND. I have grown up raising and showing simmental cattle locally and nationally. I’m excited to lead the existing Junior Simmental members and get more excitement about the Simmental breed. It was a spectacular summer for the ND Junior Simmental members. Sixteen members participated at the North Central Regional held in Huron, South Dakota. These members placed in Showmanship, Livestock Judging, Sales Talk, Quiz Bowl, Public Speaking, and in the Overall Percentage and Purebred Females. Many members also participated in showing at the North Dakota State Fair. The Simmental Association was represented with many high quality cattle as it was largest breed show at the fair. Our Junior members earned cash awards and prizes for all of their time and effort put into their Simmental project. The North Star Classic in Valley City is fast approaching. We will be having a Junior meeting Friday, December 1 at 7:00 pm. There we will be discussing the Annual Meeting and Banquet and the 2018 American Junior

Simmental Association National Show held in St. Paul, Minnesota on July 2-7. I really encourage all of our junior members to think of participating in this event, it will be a fun week of competing in contests and making new friends that will last a lifetime. As the show season is right around the corner, the North Dakota Simmental Association classic Sale will be held December 9 at approximately 2:00 pm or immediately following the ND Red Angus State Sale. This event held at Kist Livestock in Mandan will give you the opportunity to purchase your next show heifer for the upcoming Junior National and the Simmental Futurity at the State Fair. The Annual Meeting and Banquet will be held the night before (December 8) at 7:00 pm, we highly recommend junior members to bring an auction item to this event to be put in the auction. The money from the auction goes to our Junior Simmental Association to help with any funding needed. Be sure to check out the website www.northdakotasimmental.com or find the Facebook page for more information on important dates and events that are coming up. I’m looking forward to seeing new and existing members at these upcoming events.

RETIRING STOCKMEN’S DIRECTORS

T

he terms of four NDSA directors will come to a close following the NDSA Annual Convention & Trade Show in Fargo. Each director has completed two four-year terms and is no longer eligible for re-election. NDSA District 1 Director Jeff Schafer of New Rockford is the first of the retirees. During his tenure, Schafer has served on the NDSA Brand Board, most recently as chairman, as well as the NDSA Research & Education Committee. He and his wife Leann represented their district at the Young Cattlemen’s Legislative Conference. They have three children, Chelsey (Kyle Erdmann), Colten and Corey.

He represented the NDSA at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Young Cattlemen’s Conference and Young Beef Leaders Seminar. He and his wife Maria have a new daughter, Amelia. NDSA District 5 Director Paige Burian of Manning will also be finishing his term. Burian serves as vice chairman of the NDSA Animal Health Committee and is a director for the North Dakota Stockmen’s Foundation. He is a

STOCKMEN’S ASSOCIATION RE-ELECTS TOP OFFICERS, TAPS DIRECTORS TO FILL OUT LEADERSHIP TEAM

N

orth Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) members tapped Gackle, N.D., rancher Warren Zenker for a second term as the organization’s president at the 88th Annual Convention & Trade Show, “Boots on the Ground,” in Fargo, N.D., in September. The 24-year NDSA member and his wife Linda manage a 400-head cow-calf herd, a 2,000-head permitted feedlot and farm alongside their son Brooks and their nephews. Zenkers’ daughter Jordan Becker and her husband David live in nearby Napoleon, N.D. Dan Rorvig, a 29-year NDSA member from McVille, N.D., was also re-elected for a second term as vice president. Rorvig and his wife Teresa have two children, Amy and Scott, and manage a cow-calf herd, background yearlings and develop bred heifers. Before joining the NDSA Executive Committee, Rorvig served two terms as a District 1 director and chaired the Ag Policy Committee. Six directors were also tapped at the convention to represent the beef producers in their respective districts, among them were ND Simmental

Craig Kemmet of Tappen, N.D., joins the NDSA board as a new District 3 director. Kemmet and his wife Leslie have nine children, Kandace, Alan, Kristine, Mary, Alex, Laurel, Kay, Hudson and Hayden. He is a 28-year NDSA member who manages a cow-calf operation comprised of Simmental, Red Angus and SimAngus genetics and farms an irrigated crop rotation. SDJSA NEWS

FROM THE SDJSA PRESIDENT

Adam Eichacker, SDJSA President

SDJSA Advisors, (L to R) Cam Fagerhaug - new advisor, Cathy and Steve Eiachacker - retiring advisors, Clay Duxbury - new advisor

Greetings….as president of the SD Jr. Simmental Association I would like to give a brief report on this past summer’s North Central Regional Classic that was hosted by the SD Simmental Association. It was a fun-filled, record breaking week that was packed with many activities, contests, tasty foods and unbelievably good weather, with many great Simmental enthusiasts. Come to find out, it takes an army of people to host a regional, and South Dakota definitely has some of the best! Whether it be from the countless hours of organization before-hand, to everyone that stepped up to help during the busy week. Oh, and not to mention the volume of financial supporters that were all so generous to this event. I thought I would just put together a few of the numbers for you….A record breaking 230 contestants were entered with over 365 head. Seven hundred and twenty cubic yards of wood shavings were utilized. Around 50 volunteers graciously donated their time to judge the contests. Over 1920 bottles of water, 2000 cartons of milk, and 1000 cartons of orange juice were consumed. Five hundred fifty burgers were served, 125

pizzas were gobbled up, all along with 51 gallons of SDSU ice-cream. Everyone enjoyed Fiesta Friday with 700 tacos made. And next, Chris’ Cakes was kept busy flipping over 2000 pancakes. Then finally, 125 racks of ribs were served. But in the end, making this one of the best regionals…was priceless. With numbers like this, I would like to extend a huge Thank You to all the coordinators, officers, and volunteers who spent countless hours organizing this event and helping either financially or by offering their time & talent to help with every aspect of the regional. From the South Dakota Jr. Association, I would like to Thank Steve & Cathy Eichacker for the 20 years of volunteering to be our junior advisors. They have decided to retire from this job and pass on the torch to our new Jr. Advisors, Cam Fagerhaug and Clay Duxbury. We welcome Cam & Clay and look forward to our junior functions in the future. Please look through the Simmen/Teller for the information on the Heifer Grant Program and the Scholarships available for the juniors and the schedule of the upcoming events.
