FROM THE EDITOR Happy 2019 Cattle Producers,
With a new year it calls for a new perspective, whether it be in our own personal lives, our families, or our businesses, we take a step back reflect on the past and look forward to what we can improve in the new year!!! I’d say the Simmental Breed is doing the same, reflecting on past production but looking forward to what we can improve to better the industry of Simmental Cattle. The American Simmental Association (ASA) has recently released a number of programs to help the Simmental data become more accurate. Some of those new programs being, BOLT, CHR, Carcass program, & feeder profit calculator. You can find more information on these new programs on the American Simmental Associations website www.simmental.org. I encourage you to check it out!!

Both ND and SD members are doing a great job of taking advantage of all the new technology and programs that are being offered by the ASA to make better genetics each year for the commercial industry, and Id say it’s paying off!! NDJSA RECOGNIZES MEMBERS OF THE YEAR NDJSA SENIOR OF THE YEAR Written by Liz Anderson
Haley Anderson raises Simmental cattle on a commercial based operation with her family. She transfers her love and passion of cattle to the show ring. You will see her competing at the state and national level. This past summer she competed at the AJSA National Classic in St. Paul, MN with a highlight of making her way to the she Senior Showmanship finals. She has also earned titles at the North Dakota State Fair, being named the FFA Beef Champion Showman three times, the 4-H Senior Champion Showman and the 2017 North Dakota State Fair 4-H Round Robin Champion Showman. Haley has exhibited the Champion 4-H Simmental-Influenced heifer at the State Fair as well as numerous county fair Simmental champions. She is currently the North Dakota Points Show Association President and the secretary for the North Dakota Junior Simmental Association. She attends May-

ville State University where she is a business major with a minor in coaching. She is also a member of the MSU Comets basketball team, a Recruit Ambassador for MSU basketball, a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee Club and is on the MSU Dean’s list. After graduation she plans on moving back to the family farm and ranch to work with her Dad while building a herd of her own until she can take over the operation.
NDJSA JUNIOR OF THE YEAR Written by Karaoke Reiser
Kadence Reiser is one of the first to volunteer and go outside and help with the cattle on her family’s ranch. She started her herd by purchasing a registered heifer at age four with her parents help and continues to build her herd. Since 2011 she was been a member of the North Dakota Junior Simmental Association and the North Dakota Junior Points Show Association. Besides her involvement in the
cattle industry she also is a ten year member of her local 4-H club, a three year member of her local FFA chapter, competing on the livestock judging team and Ag Sales contests. She also participates in volleyball, basketball and choir. Kadence has showed cattle since she was six years old, starting with a pail calf named Teddy. Since starting her show career Kadence has shown Simmental and Sim-Influence cattle at the county fair, North Dakota State Fair and North Dakota Junior Points Show Association shows. Kadence exhibits determination and dedication with her show heifers by waking up early and staying up late to care for her cattle and keep up with school and activity schedules. She helps with all duties of the day to day operation of the ranch, from fixing fence to making hay to working cows. She even learned how to drench calves this year, by the guidance of her older sister because she didn’t want to do it herself.

NDSA BANQUET AWARD HONOREES PIONEER AWARD Written by Tim Clark
With the 50th year celebration of the Simmental Association, It is an honor and privilege to introduce our ND Simmental Association 2018 Pioneer award recipient. A Simmental promoter since the early years, he holds ASA number 1799. He attended the first Simmental organizational meeting in Bismarck, which Don Vaniman attending and organizing. His says ASA number would have been in the double digits if he had joined at that time. Membership was $150 but he didn’t have the $150 to join. But became a member shortly after. Arnold Woodbury began ranching and farming on his current operation in 1964. His first calf crop average 375 pounds, so Arnie began AI’ing and increased his weaning weights to 500 pounds over the next 5 years. Then began using Simmental bulls, Galant was the first bull he used and increased his weaning weights to 600 pounds with his first cross. Increased to 700 pounds with his 2nd generation. With those results, Arnie has used Simmentals ever since and never looked back. Arnold, along with his wife Lynn ran under Woodbury Stock Farm, they sold females in State sale from the beginning. He continues to sell around 50 bulls a year private treaty. Their first female registered was WSF Galero 103, registration number 0035827, she was a Galant daughter. He was President of the ND Simmental Association in 1979 and again in 1982. He was awarded the ND Simmental Association Promoter of the year in 1987. In the late 70’s, Arnie along with Tom Anderson began a sale management business and conducted many sales around the area. Probably the most famous was the Pride of the Northland Sale in Moorhead and Fargo. They began this sale in Moorhead at the Regency Hotel. Where they had the cattle on display in the parking lot and ran the cattle thru a ring in the ballroom of the hotel. After several years they moved it to the Doublewood in Fargo and then to the Civic center in Fargo. They also managed the ND Bull Test sale. 18 | SD SimmenTeller & ND Simmental Scene
The biggest one was held at the Lone Steer in Steele ND. He was also instrumental in getting Simmental cattle into the ND Winter Show. It took 2 years of negotiation to get the Simmental breed to be added to the show. Even then they were on immediate probation and if numbers feel below 30 head they would be eliminated. There were also not allowed to be in the barn with at the same time as the Hereford, Angus and other breeds. They had to show before the other breeds came in. Arnie has served on many boards throughout his years of farming and ranching. He served on the ND Simmental board, ND Winter Show Board, Crookston Winter Show Board, ND Sunflower board, along with many local and county boards.
PROMOTER OF THE YEAR AWARD Written by Dusty Kunkel
This year’s Promoter of the Year Award recipient has deep roots in the Simmental breed. The family has an ASA number of 292 and the 7th one issued in North Dakota. Their mom, Helen, went to a meeting in Bismarck, where Dean Olson informed people about a new breed called Simmental. At the same time of the meeting, their dad, Joe, was in Montana at a Charolais bull sale. When Joe got back, Helen told him about the information that Dean Olson presented. She convinced him that they too should start using Simmental genetics. The next spring, they AI’d some cows to the bull Bismarck. This family actively supports the State Sale every year. Also, all of their children belonged to 4H and show cattle at the Morton County Fair. Today, they farm and ranch East of New Salem. They raise wheat, barley, soybeans, corn, and sunflowers. Doll’s also calve out two purebred herds. They will hold the 39th Annual Doll Charolais and Simmental Bull and Female Sale in March. Doll Simmental Ranch consists of Charlie and wife Pam, along with their five children, Angela, Joey, Wesley, Casey and Ty; brother Harlan and wife Jodie, and their two daughters Hailie and Jacie; and the youngest brother David, and his wife Donna, and their
daughters Katie and Krysten. Their parents Helen and the late Joe Doll, are the roots of the operation, and Helen continues to have role in its success. Joe and Helen received the Pioneer Award in 2014.
COMMERCIAL CATTLEMAN AWARD Written by JR Aufforth
The 2018 Commercial cattleman award goes to a young ranch family. Preston and Renee were High School Sweethearts graduating from Carson high in 2003. They both attended college, Preston Completing the carpentry program at BSC and Renee receiving a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Dickinson State. Preston purchased 15 bred heifers in 2004 starting his herd. They were married in 2007 and make their home on the family ranch which was established in 1898. They have 4 children, Christian, Julian, Trinity, and Kiara. Who are the 6th Generation on the ranch! They ranch with Preston’s parents Dan and Jackie Stewart. Combined they have expanded the herd to over 1000 commercial Angus and SIM Angus cows. In 2009 they went to an all natural program which limited options for increased weight gain. In 2010 they tried cross breeding with Simmental on their Angus cows. As they continue to replace their Angus herd sires with Simmental bulls they are continuing to notice a steady rise in weaning weight. The bull battery is now almost all purebred Simmental. They have been receiving carcass info back on their calves with the last data showing 97.9 % grading choice or higher, and they yielded 64.1%. Behind most successful ranchers is a strong ranch wife. This place is no exception. Most of us are lucky enough to have a wife to help out when we need it, some even lucky enough to have them working beside them every day. Last spring I was able to witness this couple hauling pairs to grass. Renee was driving her own semi and pulling a pot load of cows. Not every ranch wife is willing to take on that task!

IGS RELEASES MULTI-BREED GENETIC EVALUATION POWERED BY BOLT Bozeman, MT — International Genetic Solutions (IGS) is an unprecedented collaboration between progressive breed associations fervently committed to enhancing commercial profitability. The collaboration has yielded the world’s largest genetic evaluation of beef cattle with over 17 million animals and 120,000+ genotypes. In keeping with our commitment to the cattle industry, IGS is pleased to announce the IGS Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLTTM. The new genetic evaluation provides more predictive EPDs, better use of genomics, more accurate accuracy reported with EPDs, all with weekly evaluations. The announcement ushers in a new era in genetic evaluation — an era made possible by a genetic evaluation system dubbed BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools, owned by Theta Solutions, LLC). The concept for BOLT started in 2014 as a research endeavor between the American Simmental Association (ASA) and Drs. Bruce Golden and Dorian Garrick. BOLT is, quite simply, the most revolutionary and powerful genetic evaluation system in existence. Its power allows IGS to leverage genetic evaluation methodology that was once thought to be untenable on large databases — methodology that significantly improves genetic prediction. In December 2016, IGS published a multibreed stayability, the industry’s first EPD using BOLT and the first single-step methodology applied to a large beef cattle database. Since that time, the IGS genetic evaluation team has worked toward fully implementing BOLT with an automated system that enables weekly evaluations for an entire suite of EPDs. As of May 5th, 2018, ASA is the first of the IGS partners to publish a full suite of EPDs generated by the IGS Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT. Each IGS partner has complete autonomy to determine the release date that best fits their organization. As such, the release of EPDs by the other IGS 44 | SD SimmenTeller & ND Simmental Scene
partners is likely to be staggered over the next several weeks. As always, we look forward to your questions and comments about what you see. Here are the notable changes in the evaluation: Movement of EPDs and reranking. EPDs and indexes will change. These changes will be more dramatic for younger, lower accuracy cattle. The IGS team has tested the changes and proven the new EPDs result in superior predictions of genetic merit. Shrinking of EPD range. You will notice a reduction in the range of EPDs for most traits. The IGS evaluation team tested the statistical veracity of the reduction and it has proven to be in line with expectations based on the genetic variation in the population. Improved use of genomics. With the switch to the BOLT software, IGS will use single-step genomic evaluation on all EPDs. Single-step uses DNA markers, pedigree information, and phenotypic data simultaneously in the prediction of EPDs. Previously, molecular breeding values (MBVs) were calculated from the genomic information and those MBVs were blended in a separate procedure into the EPD predictions. The single-step method squeezes more information from the DNA markers than the previous approach allowed. Additionally, with single-step, the genomic information will not only enhance each EPD for the genotyped animals but also will be used in the EPD estimates of relatives. It is well established that DNA markers vary greatly in their effect on traits — ranging from large to virtually no impact. To leverage this biological fact in a statistically advantageous manner, the BOLT single-step method only uses markers that have a meaningful impact on the traits of interest, while ignoring those that have little to no effect. Research has shown that by using this approach, BOLT reduces statistical “noise” and thereby increases the accuracy of the EPD prediction compared to other single-step methods.
It is important to note, continued collection of phenotypic records remains a vital part of genetic predictions. DNA testing will never replace the need to record and submit phenotypes. More accurate accuracy. In the previous IGS evaluation platform, and all others in existence other than BOLT, the calculation of the accuracy associated with each EPD is achieved through “approximation” methods. It has long been known these methods are a less than optimal approach to the calculation of accuracy — tending to overestimate accuracy. By employing unique computing strategies that leverage both software and hardware efficiencies, BOLT performs what was previously unthinkable — utilizing a sampling methodology to calculate what is essentially true accuracy. Unlike approximated accuracies, BOLT-derived accuracies will result in predicted movements associated with possible change holding true over time. This is not the case with the previous IGS software or any other system currently in existence. While the IGS evaluation team and partners are excited to release this new chapter in genetic evaluation, the new genetic evaluation system will only realize its true potential if selection is made using its EPD and index values. Hands down, there is no better (more accurate) way to select for quantitative traits than an EPD. Economic indexes predict net profit by weighing the EPD for economically relevant traits coupled with economic estimates. To compete with other protein sources, it is imperative that the beef industry adopt the best science and technology to make better breeding selection decisions.
