A TRIBUTE TO
"The Wolfe Twins"
In the last thirteen months, we lost both matriarchs of our family, the end of a generation. This sale is dedicated to them. They so loved these sales. Here are a few stories and memories I’d like to share.
My mother, Maxine Zirkle, and her identical twin sister, Madeline Litten, were amazing ladies. God-fearing, tough, feisty and classy, are words that describe them well.
They grew up near Edinburg, Virginia in the last house on a mile-long, dead-end road on the bank of the Shenandoah River. They were dirt poor, growing up in the Great Depression. But, they never knew they were poor, as they always said “the folks on the mountain had less than we did”. They were poor in material possessions, but rich beyond measure in many other ways.
The twins were the youngest of seven children, (two boys and five girls). My grandpa, Grandy, couldn’t tell them apart. So, he simply called them “Babes”, even when they were older.
They played in the river, swam like fish, crossed the river in all types of weather to attend church, and ate fish and eels. So, it’s no surprise, that after they left home they never ate fish again.
My grandma, GrannyLou, was an excellent cook, making wonderful meals from whatever they grew or foraged. They never went hungry. Town folks loved her homemade butter stamped with a pineapple mold. The Babes would walk several miles to town, trading eggs and butter for flour, coffee and sugar.
GrannyLou made everyone’s clothes. Mom and Sissy, (as I called her), wore dresses made from flour sacks. The town children, who were generally better off financially, always made fun of them and their dresses. One year GrannyLou ran out of unprinted flour sack material to finish Mom’s little dress, so “Pillsbury’s Best” was displayed on Mom’s fanny. She was so ashamed, but you did what you had to do. And after they got jobs, these ladies never went to town without being dressed fit to kill!
They had few toys. They used their imagination to entertain themselves playing games outside and exploring. GrannyLou loved her children dearly and made a day of celebration for every special day listed on the calendar. It was a simple pleasure that everyone looked forward to.
In a good year, each child got a pair of shoes at Christmas and an orange. Those shoes were only worn in the coldest of seasons as they had to last all year. And in a fine snow, they’d wake up to a dusting of snow on their beds!
Grandy worked in lumber camps in the mountains of West Virginia. Every Friday after work, he walked over the mountains, many miles by lantern light, to spend the weekend with his family. Sunday after church, he headed back to camp, leaving GrannyLou alone with the children.

(Grandy was a stout man of steel. When he was in his early 80s, he could still walk up the stairs on his hands with his feet in the air!)
Everyone attended church three times on Sunday. And having no vehicle, it was a feat to attend. They’d boat or walk the ice to cross the river, carrying their Sunday clothes in bags. Then, they’d climb the mountain and change into their church clothes at the big “changing tree” in a farmer’s field. After the first service, they’d change back to their daily clothes, leaving their Sunday clothes at the tree, and return home, only to repeat the process twice more that day. Both sons were drafted to go to Germany in World War II. Billy was barely there a year when he was killed in a tank. Upon his last visit home, the family walked him the mile to the bus, in deep snow, to say goodbye. Every time Mom and Sissy walked out the road, until the snow melted in the Spring, they walked in his exact same footsteps. He was killed a month after his goodbye. Hubert was wounded, returned home and recovered.
One bitter week while Grandy was at work and the boys were off to war, they ran out of wood. GrannyLou burned their most cherished possession, the pump organ, to keep warm. Mom and Sissy were heartbroken as they had beautiful voices and sang at church and on the radio, Mom soprano and Sissy alto, adding harmony. They often mentioned seeing those ivory keys melt.
Mom and Sissy promised their mother they’d dress alike every day of their lives, and they did. They also promised they’d never say a harsh word to one another, and they didn’t.
Yes, they grew up hard, very hard, but through it all, living 96 and 97 years respectively, they said they wouldn’t change a thing. They grew up in a loving, devoted family and they had each other.
The twins will be missed by many, but theirs was the definition of lives well-lived. These two special ladies encouraged me to follow the beat of my own drum. To them I say, “Thank You”. I had two amazing role models and two incredible mothers to cherish for many years.
I AM BEYOND BLESSED.

It’s a tremendous set of genetics that we’re proud to offer our valued customers and friends. This offering of unique outcross genetics and will not disappoint. The proof is in the pudding!
The females are high maternal, performance ladies, bred with purpose, bred with a vision. They're the most correct, easy-keeping, good-natured, functional, trouble-free mamas with style that I know how to breed. They are bred for real cattlemen and cattlewomen…and they flat out get the job done! The females in this offering are from the heart of the herd. They’re the best of my best.
And great females make great bulls! These bulls are athletes developed in Virginia range conditions. All passed a complete breeding soundness examination. I live about 30 minutes from Lisa and Shenandoah Valley Simmentals. I take the opportunity three to four times a year to walk through the cattle and see what’s evolving in Lisa’s breeding program. Over the years I have purchased many females and bulls. The bulls have been for myself as well as producers I purchased for in the Midwest. The females have been super productive. The heifers out of these cows are eye-appealing keepers that carry the productivity of their mothers. The cattle are calm, easy to work with and productive.

We always enjoy our trips to Shenandoah Valley Simmentals’ sales. I’ve always said the Shenandoah Valley has got to be one of the prettiest sections of our state. Beautiful country, great people and awesome cattle. We’ve been fortunate enough through the years to purchase several head of cattle from Lisa. From bulls, bred cows, heifers to cow/calf pairs, you name it…we’ve brought them back home to good Ol’ Southside Virginia.
Lisa always has a great set of bulls. With the addition of the Waylon bull to her herd recently, it just gets more powerful. He’s one awesome bull. And these females from SVS…what can you say…they are great! These girls milk. Any heifer born to a female we’ve purchased from Shenandoah Valley Simmentals normally stays here at our farm. The best milkers we have came from Lisa. Plus the docility these cattle possess…Wow…These are some of the calmest cattle you’ll ever go around.
It’s a great time to be in the cattle business. Lisa, Barry and the gang put a lot of time into raising these cattle. It shows. If you’re looking for some of the best cattle you can get your hands on, this is the place to be. You can’t go wrong. These definitely are “The Keepin’ Kind”!!

From one of our original donor cow families, SVS
HAWK MAXF. This RVR WAYLON 287H son adds a touch of height in a long, attractive-profiling frame. This black, Homozygous Polled sire should add growth to calves and loads of maternal ability to replacement females. His dam is a beauty. Here’s one you don’t want to miss!

QUICK REFERENCE TO ASA EPDS AND $ INDEXES
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units).
Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an allpurpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
