I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 7th Annual Buckles and Banners Simmental Sale! In southern Iowa, we have had another challenging year with plenty of dry conditions and somewhat of a shortage of feedstuffs but with some recent rains things are shaping up. No matter where you live it’s never easy in this business. With that being said, I am very excited about this offering. There will be something for everyone! We lost some pasture ground this past year and have had to reduce the number of our overall herd of cattle.

This change of events for us will be opening up some incredible opportunities for all of you as we are selling ALL of our partnership donors. This decision has been very difficult to make because you will notice that these females have been some of the most popular and prolific cows in our operation. However, we are excited to allow our clients to purchase these females while they still have loads of production left for their new owners. I can personally tell you that at one time there was no one more competitive than myself but I have come to truly enjoy selling top quality breeding stock to others and I love when those animals prove to be just as successful for our customers. I’d like to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to evaluate the cattle and hope that you can join us in West Point on October 19th. I might have said it back in year one, but from knowing a young Eric Gerdes I can’t tell you how proud I am of him and his family for their accomplishments. I, along with the rest of DP Sales are truly honored to be able to work for such a hardworking young man Eric and his wife who might work 5 times more! The entire Buckles & Banners group - the Gerdes family, the Owen family, the Thompson family, the Wellman family, and good old Dave and Markella Haines know how to roll out the red carpet for such a first class event. If you have never been to West Point, Iowa; this is the year to make the drive.

This past year has been exceptional. Welsh’s Scarlet who is featured as Lot 1 in the 2018 edition raised TWO champions - GSC GCCO Dew North and GSC Saughatchee (high selling bull in last year’s sale). Not only did these boys collect banners, but they are selling semen and being mated to some of the breed’s best cows. Who knew when Eric judged the Kentucky Beef Expo Simmental Sale Cattle years back that Scarlet would be named champion, changed owners the next day to Gerdes Show Cattle, and would go on to produce National Champions. It goes to show what vision, patience, and hard work can do in the cattle business. Now a cow in the prime of her production is being offered for a new generation of greatness. Let’s not forget the daughter of a National Champion, SVF/PRS Shania Y704. Flip quick to her picture! I guess I will start off the same as I always do when I show people this cow at the farm. This is my favorite cow! We purchased Scarlet at the Kentucky Beef Expo and she has gone on to produce many sale toppers as well as multiple champions! This past NAILE and show season proved her ability to be versatile and consistent- producing the Champion Percentage Bull, GSC Saugahatchee 161C and the Reserve Champion Purebred Bull, GSC GCCO Dew North 102C. These two sons were very well received by breeders across the country and have been heavily used in many cow herds throughout the US and Canada. The daughters of 161Z have been just as impressive in the show ring and excel once being put into production. Scarlet is a great embryo producer in both conventional and IVF settings, averaging 8 transferable embryos. We are offering ½ interest in this prolific donor with no possession. Whisman Cattle Company are retaining their ½ of Scarlet and are incredible partners to work with. What an opportunity!!

Throughout the years I have always placed emphasis on cow families that work on a consistent basis, which is why this catalog is dotted from front to back with so many lots going back to certain cows, especially Shania or “Big Mamma� as Jaren likes to call her. A little secret that nobody knows is that when Eric and I bought Shania as a calf we did so blind. Neither Eric or I ever saw her, not even a picture was posted in the catalog. However, Eric and I did know one thing- she was out of an outstanding female that had won Kansas City, Louisville, and was Reserve Grand in Denver. We also knew that her granddam, War Diva and Great Grand dam, Sheza Dandy were constantly selling progeny throughout the country that were topping sales. With this in mind we bought Shania and started building a program around this historical cow family. Our plan soon paid off with the following examples. A daughter going to Circle M for $13,500, a bull to Georgia for $7,500 half interest and another daughter to Kyle Hotz for $16,500. Additionally, she is the mother of Payday that Eric and I use in house. These are just a few examples of what an investment can do for you if you seek the right genetics. Many banners have been won in this lineage including four National Champions.

With one of her first embryo transfer calves in the sale this year, it is probably silly to sell a young cow with this much potential but we have made the tough decision to offer all of our partnership cows, and she is one of them. “Boosh”, nicknamed by my wife and son, had an incredibly successful show career and then did exactly what we ask these elite females to do- produce progeny better than herself. She has a baldy female selling in the sale with her that should prove this cow’s ability to perform as a donor cow. Breeding Guarantee

Cattle will sell under the standard terms and conditions recommended by the American Simmental Association.

We guarantee all livestock sold are sound breeders. However, the heifers that are shown can often be fed to an extreme level of obesity for the purpose of exhibition. In those circumstances, the heifers are often not allowed to be bred in ideal conditions due to the priority of continuous exhibition and are typically bred later to lengthen their possibility of exhibition. Due to this we will hold the feeder/owner responsible for any reproductive problems and no longer feel responsible to guarantee that individual heifer. In the rare case this was to occur, the Buckles and Banners consignors will make an attempt to assist and help you breed the heifer through the following two breeding seasons.

Also, all bred females are sold under the condition “safe in calf,� as attested by a licensed veterinarian and sell with no further guarantee.

The ultrasound results reported are as accurate as possible, but are not guaranteed. No guarantee is given that bred females will deliver a live calf. The buyer will be given a 24 hour option to have a licensed veterinarian examine the female before she leaves the sale premises.

Sexed semen lots come with no guarantee. We only guarantee the female was exposed to sexed semen.
