It is indeed an honor to introduce the 2020 WACPC Year in Review!

I would like to reiterate my continued desire to hear from the membership. I am open to ideas and feedback regardless of the topic. The Board can’t always accommodate all wishes and wants, however the Board works to evaluate the feedback and discuss possibilities. The athletes need to be the first concern, the coaches, and financials follow. The WACPC Board considers the following: “Is this good for the athletes? Is it as “fair” as possible? What would the financial implication be? What does the membership think?” Members receive electronic surveys seeking their input. Please consider reading the posted minutes on the website to keep up with the latest.

Year in Review 2020

This is a great opportunity to reflect on this past year, noting positive changes as well as “opportunities” for change. The cheer and dance competitions were successful, thanks to awesome site directors as well as hard-working WACPC Board members, college workers, and volunteers. Thankfully the competitions were held before the world wide health crisis. I am praying for an end to this and for the safety of all.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Once again, the 2019 WACPC Fall Conference was a sell-out. Coaches and athletes had to be turned away because the conference reached capacity rather quickly. I would encourage members to register EARLY for next year! Lorie Evers has secured awesome speakers in the past and she is doing it again! Check the website to see which VIP’s are coming! Not surprisingly, Lorie is already planning for this year and beyond.

The State Cheer competition took place in Watertown this year. It was a good event, and went well considering it was a new venue and a new format. As with all our events, feedback from coaches is being collected, and planning for the future is happening.

Hopefully cheer coaches have been able to respond to the recent survey emailed by Cheer Co-Chair Deanna Barkhaus. Feedback is always welcome!

This summer the Board will be busy updating the policies in the handbook and the website. There are usually changes to registration, deadlines, divisions, safety, quizzes, a review of the All State selection process, judge training, as well as sites for 2021.

I hope you enjoy the WACPC Year in Review. Morgan Flury and her team have worked hard to capture the essence of the year. Please join me in celebrating the past year; smile and appreciate all your team has accomplished as well as that accomplished collectively among all teams.

Thanks for allowing me to be part of WACPC leadership. I look forward to continuing work to ensure a bright future for Wisconsin’s Cheer and Dance sports.

2021 Scholarships The Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches is proud to offer twenty individual $1,000 Scholarships to graduating seniors of the Class of 2021, who are involved in Cheerleading and Pom/Dance programs in their schools.

I truly believe Coach is and extraordinary person. She speaks with a smile on her face, listens with an open ear, and her heart is filled with empathy. She does not coach for the money, she coaches because she cares and wants for everyone of her athletes to recognize success inside as well as outside of cheer.

Coach is selfless and freely gives of her time, expecting her team to give back to the community through working with Relay for Life and Paul’s Pantry. She oversees and directs a number of community-building programs.

From a person on the outside looking in, I see a program where the coach is in control, and the students and parent respect that coach. If all our programs were run like our cheer team, my job as principal would be much easier.

DANCE COACH OF THE YEAR

Here are a just a few of the compliments and appreciations shared about our 2020 Dance Coach of the Year, Sarah Heinevetter from Franklin High School.

THE SCHOOL’S ATHLETIC DIRECTOR WROTE “Our coach is an invaluable asset and promoter of our school community. In my experience, the best leaders of any organization are people who put other’s success before their own, and Coach has always demonstrated the desire and commitment to do what is best for her student athletes.

In addition to leading a championship caliber team, Coach engages her team members in community service frequently throughout the year. It is not uncommon to find our dance team members leading charity drives, preparing meals for local shelters, or sharing leadership and community with our district’s elementary age students.”

To promote cheer and dance programs throughout the State of Wisconsin.

To develop guidelines and recommendations for the improvement of cheer and dance programs.

To encourage administrators to hire well-qualified personnel to serve in the capacity as cheer and dance coaches.

To provide opportunities for the development of cheer and dance coaching skills.

To provide resources for cheer and dance coaches.

WIAA ENDORSEMENT The WIAA and its member schools have recognized and endorsed the Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches as the organization aligned with school-based programs in the state since 2003.

Although a number of other non-school competitions are offered by profit-seeking interests, the WACPC provides competitions and education for cheer and dance teams that embrace the ideals of interscholastic activities.

COMPREHENSIVE ETHICS STATEMENT Coaching ethics means conforming to professional standards or moral conduct. Cheer and Dance coaches have a tremendous influence in the education of an athlete. Never place the value of winning above the value of instilling the highest ideals of character.

Coaches should consistently uphold the integrity of the profession; strive to set an example of highest ethical and moral conduct.

Coaches should have thorough knowledge of the safety rules.

Competition administrators and judges shall have the respect and support of the coach. Public criticism of competing athletes, teams, coaches, competition administrators, or judges is unethical.

Conduct that incites athletes or spectators against these personnel is unethical constructive criticism or concerns should be directed to the WACPC Board of Directors.

Coaches shall actively use their influence to promote sportsmanship. While it is impossible for competition administrators or judges to monitor the ethical behavior of athletes, teams, or coaches, these rules exist on an honor system.

Examples of unethical coaching may be, but are not limited to: • Using choreography from a camp, youtube, or other video sources in its entirety or

in large sections.

• Displaying poor sportsmanship during or after the competition or awards.

• Using ineligible athletes.

• Failure to show proper respect during National Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance.

• Using social media to publicly criticize or bully individual athletes, entire teams, coaches,

competition administrators, or judges.
