Area Notes, November 13, 2022 - from Trusted Servant Paul A.
• TOPIC BOARD
TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION:
• Morning Sky suggests Re: Periodic moving of Area Mtg - Designate a location to repeat annually or interval
• Activities – doing well, more events coming
• H & I – always needs volunteers
• Outreach – Flag rules changed to 2 people or more
• P & P – mtg 12/4 noon
• PR – give biz cards to Police Depts, drug court; more convenience store signs coming;
• Are annual PR activities on the Badgerland Calendar?
• Any member can contact a local TV/radio station to suggest they carry PSAs;
• Local support group lists in Madison newspapers?
• Support group events in Dane County
• Rainbow Meeting is virtual
• Beloit Meeting needs support desparately Sun/Wed/Fri also virtual
ELECTION:
Paul A. approved RCM; Mark S. approved PR Chair
Liz B. approved Literature Chair
1) Finance questions- Jennifer questioned why Area Treasury present balance carries over $2K in account, leading to plan for greater discussion in Dec. 2022 on such matters as:
- Changing priorities for Area spending;
- Participants encouraged to give thought on how dollars could be spent and bring ideas;
- Preliminarily, Paull suggests consideration of a specific budget for Area operations and perhaps Policy review of existing options;
- Preliminarily, Jane suggests purchasing/placing Lit racks for all Sober-Living, hospitals; print/providing Guides (?) for all GSRs and chairs;
- Richard notes ‘during and post-covid’ we’ve not spent much money, need to support existing Area needs.
2) Periodic Location Change of Area Meeting (Remote Mtg) for further discussion Dec. 2022:
- As suggested in Area Inventory, ways to better serve Groups are vital. To answer this need suggestion was made on relocating Area Meeting to Janesville/Beloit area – once or more times yearly -- Member Development/Outreach last month with initial assignment to Mark S./Paul A. on finding a suitable location in Janesville.
- Mark/Paul report on findings.
- Paul notes Morning Sky suggestion on repeating date/location of any Remote Mtg on an annual basis;
- Mark M. notes ‘calendar and physical needs’ to determine date/place, availability of WiFi for Remote Mtg virtual element, Goodman Center needs reasonable notice of when room will not be used for Area. Suggests GSRs in Janesville/Beloit ask Groups if they’d like to host the Remote Meeting in their community in 2023. Hope is to nail down month (s) in time for January calendars.
- Paul A. supports this as an alternative to Area making all arrangements /logistics for such an activity.
- Mark S. supports any effort to plan such an activity.
- Beloit GSR (Tom?) asks for details on ‘what is needed’ to host meeting, Jennifer, Mark M. and Paul state “public place open on a 2nd Sunday of a month (tbd), with WiFi”.
- Mark M. notes Remote Meeting most likely of interest only in southern part of Area. Paul notes added details can be sent asap.
- Richard suggests following Region’s seasonal meeting calendar of ‘cold weather months all virtual meetings, with warm months face to face.’
- Jane/Greg indicate ‘need for a different (Area) commitment to change to virtual’ especially re: Area Treasurer’s operation, receiving check requests, dispersements, and receiving of 7th Tradition funds.‘
- Richard asks how such operated during covid and if same system could be implemented.
- Jane/Greg interject use of PayPal during covid created great difficulties with oversight of money-handling, so Policy may need revisit though not necessarily change.

Nothing to Report
1. Bus Signs: I contacted Peg Anthony at Madison Metro and she said that the old signs in the Madison city buses, will be removed so we pick them up and use them for other purposes. She will be replacing those old and maybe damaged signs with the 20 new signs that will have the new Regional helpline number on them. She said that the new signs will be ready for installation on the buses for January.
2.Business Cards: In this last year our committee has used approximately 4500 to 5000 business cards that more easily spread the NA message and provided information including the website and helpline number and special QR codes on the back of the card for access to Area & Regional websites and NA literature in pdf form. We will be asking the Area to purchase 4000 business cards next year. It will be in the 2023 PR budget
3. Store signs: In the last year we gave around 60 8” by 11” inch laminated store signs to various addicts in the Area to put up in stores, libraries, cop shoppes, hospital emergency rooms. We ran out of signs already so we will probably ask the Area to purchase 60 more for next year. This also be in PR 2023 budget.
4.Events: We set up a booth at 3 events this year, Overdose Awareness Day in Beloit, Voices For Recovery at the state Capitol & Rock For Recovery in Janesville. Each event was a success for NA in getting out the good news to the public. We will be budgeting for these three events next year.
5. Public Service Announcements: This year we made sure that some radio listeners and a lot of TV watchers got to hear or view an NA PSA. The committee will be doing follow ups to see that those PSAs are still being played or shown and if not. request further time from these platforms. We were also contacted by JATV, a local Janesville station, to start airing our PSA. We will contact them by the end of the year.
6. Newspapers: We have been updating the Janesville Gazette for their once a week listing of support groups for which NA is part of. If there any other newspapers in the Area that do this, please let this subcommittee know. Information about NA and our meetings needs to be accurate.
7. Lastly, the drug courts have been expressing interest in knowing more about NA, we will follow up on this in the last 2 months of the year and next year
8. …And definitely last, the subcommittee will be asking the Area to make policy changes by adding more of the specific duties of the Chairperson of the PR subcommittee.
9. P.S. I am your Public Relations Chair for another year, thanks for your support!!
The next PR subcommittee meeting will be on January 15th,2023 at 11am CD on Zoom

H&I continues it’s four in person meetings within Dane County. We are holding at least half of these weekly meetings and could always use more willing volunteers. Several new volunteers are still going through the vetting process to gain access to the system at this time and this is exciting. Jefferson County & Rock County jails continue to recruit volunteers for their own in person meetings. H&I is currently in the final steps of scheduling our new virtual meetings with the Sauk Co. Jail and we hope to have those two meetings up and running within the next two months. Dani Miller is our new H&I Co-chair and has begun active service on the Committee. We are hoping to have a Quarterly H&I meeting within the next two months.
In loving service Dani & Richard.
Fun w/ Flags have kicked off. Hope people are out there going after Flags. Otherwise, nothing new to report.
In loving Service, Jennifer M.
