LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

It is with great excitement that WACPC presents the 2024 Year In Review program!

What a year it has been not only for our organization but for Wisconsin Dance and Cheer teams across the state! Limitless passion invaded the hearts and minds of our coaches, athletes, and officials this year. The result was extraordinary, and we congratulate all for their achievements this season. Whether it was a fledgling team making State for the first time, a new program finding their groove in their schools and on their sidelines, or even those that made their name known at the National level - there is much to celebrate in Wisconsin!

“Winds in the east, mist coming in. Like something is brewing, about to begin…” sung by Dick Van Dyke rings in my head. Looking forward to the 2024 - 2025 season, I cannot help but conjure up this Mary Poppins reference. Change surely is upon us. Our Dance Committee embarked on a journey this past year that saw an overhaul of competition scoring and official’s training. WACPC acknowledges that this work is never done, and we will continue to refine! Cheer will soon be jumping into the fire to forge a similar path this coming season. As we do year in and out, WACPC looks to collaborate with our members in our never ending quest to find solutions to create positive changes. We are working to collect constructive feedback via our sport committee surveys. In addition we encourage our members to visit our website where you can find our idea/feedback form, as well as connecting directly with your representatives. This spring and summer the Board of Directors and various committees will be meeting to make decisions and set goals for the coming season.

Speaking of the coming season, please set your calendars for these important dates:

• Member registration will open July 1st, 2024 and we encourage members to take advantage of benefits for the coming season by registering early!

• Summer district roundtables will take place in August!

• WACPC’s Fall Coaches and Captains Conference will return to the Wilderness, Wisconsin Dells on the weekend of November 15th - 17th, 2024; with plans already underway!

As we close the chapter on the 2023 - 2024 season, it is a time to recognize those who have given so selflessly. WACPC is grateful to have so many board members and committee members who were willing to sacrifice their personal and family time to serve our members through the year. We will be bidding farewell to many who have contributed selflessly over the years.

As this publication reaches our members, we hope it is to find everyone in good spirits and excited for what the future holds!

2023 FALL CONFERENCE

With a theme of “No Limits”, a sold-out Fall Conference returned to the Wilderness Lodge Convention Center as athletes and coaches from throughout the state gathered for another weekend of athleticism, collaboration and education.

Our Coaches Welcome Reception and Athlete’s Dance Party on Friday evening got the weekend off to a great start. On Saturday morning, attendees gathered to meet our line-up of speakers and began a day and half of workshops. Twenty-three presenters from throughout the country offered their expertise on a wide range of topics. Action Cheer workshops included a focus of Game Day, Jumps, and a variety of Stunts. Action Dance workshops included various levels of jazz, incorporating breakdancing into your Hip Hop routines, and Pom Technique. Conditioning and Choreography were featured. Classroom sessions included presentations by Rob Miller of Proactive Coaching, Mental Health Experts, and multiple uniform providers. In preparation for our Championship series events, workshops were regarding Performance and Technical Judging along with developing All-State routines.

Our Saturday luncheon included Inductions into the WACPC Hall of Fame, Cheer and Dance Coaches of the Year recognitions, and Cheer and Dance Sportsmanship award winner acknowledgements. Following lunch, our annual Cheer and Dance coaches’ roundtables were held along with new High School and Middle School Athlete roundtable updates.

In addition to a number of sponsors, vendors and college booths offering special sales and information, two returning opportunities were popular: Robb Webb Studio Images Photo Shoots and the Continuing Education Program sponsored by Concordia University to allow coaches to earn CEU’s.

The Fall Conference Committee thanks our numerous sponsors, vendors, and the UW Eau Claire and Stevens Point cheer teams for their action class assistance.

We look forward to welcoming athletes and coaches to the 2024 Fall Conference returning to the Wilderness Resort on November 15-17, 2024.

The Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches is proud to offer a minimum of twenty individual scholarships of at least $1,000 to graduating seniors of the Class of 2025, who are involved in Cheerleading and Pom/Dance programs in their schools.

Each year, WACPC accepts nominations for Coach of the Year. The nominees are review by our Recognition Committee leading to our State championship series. The committee seeks to recognize a coach who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for their team and the sport of Cheerleading and who illustrates the dedication, enthusiasm, and contribution to make their program fun, safe, and educational for everyone involved from cheerleaders to parents to school administration to community.

This year we received multiple outstanding nominations. Thank you to those who honored your coach in submitting letters for consideration. The nomination letters received for this year’s coach of the year demonstrated the commitment to the four pillars of WACPC’s mission where success equals education, motivation, collaboration, and celebration.

There was a reoccurring theme in the letters received for this year’s honoree: Team Building – Passion – and Character

As both a cheer mom and school administrator wrote: “Our coach consistently supports and encourages our athletes to actively engage with their schoolwork and in the cheer community. This commitment to uplifting spirits extends beyond the mat, fostering a culture of determination, resilience, and diversity within the school and our community. While our coach is a person of character and integrity, they always lend an ear and guide with their heart helping our athletes navigate the challenges of high school.”

WACPC PURPOSE

The purpose of this organization shall be to:

• Provide educational opportunities for the development of cheer and dance coaching skills.

• Provide resources for cheer and dance coaches increasing motivation for personal development.

• Develop guidelines and recommendations for the improvement of cheer and dance programs providing opportunities for collaboration.

• Promote and recognize cheer and dance programs throughout the state of Wisconsin.

WIAA ENDORSEMENT

The WIAA and its member schools have recognized and endorsed the Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches as the organization aligned with school-based programs in the state since 2003.

Although a number of other non-school competitions are offered by profit-seeking interests, the WACPC provides competitions and education for cheer and dance teams that embrace the ideals of interscholastic activities.

WACPC ETHICS STATEMENT

WACPC Member Coaches should….

• Consistently uphold the integrity of the profession.

• Have thorough knowledge of the safety rules.

• Respect and support competing athletes, teams, coaches, competition administrators, and judges

• Actively use their influence to promote sportsmanship.

COMPREHENSIVE ETHICS STATEMENT

Coaching ethics means conforming to professional standards or moral conduct. Cheer and Dance coaches have a tremendous influence in the education of an athlete. Never place the value of winning above the value of instilling the highest ideals of character.

• Coaches should consistently uphold the integrity of the profession; strive to set an example of highest ethical and moral conduct.

Coaches should have thorough knowledge of the safety rules.

Competition administrators and judges shall have the respect and support of the coach. Public criticism of competing athletes, teams, coaches, competition administrators, or judges is unethical. Conduct that incites athletes or spectators against these personnel is unethical constructive criticism or concerns should be directed to the WACPC Board of Directors.

Coaches shall actively use their influence to promote sportsmanship. While it is impossible for competition administrators or judges to monitor the ethical behavior of athletes, teams, or coaches, these rules exist on an honor system.

Examples of unethical coaching may be, but are not limited to:

Using choreography from a camp, youtube, or other video sources in its entirety or

Displaying poor sportsmanship during or after the competition or awards.

Failure to show proper respect during National Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance. Using social media to publicly criticize or bully individual athletes, entire teams, coaches,
