It is indeed an honor to introduce the 2021 WACPC Year in Review and what a year it has been!
Plans are being made for the new year as this is written. A Fall Conference is anticipated as well as in-person competitions. Interestingly, many coaches reported positive reactions to the block scheduling which eliminated long competition days. There are opportunities to make changes and adaptations to the “way we have always done” things. The WACPC Board continues to place the welfare of athletes first, needs of coaches, and the financial implications of decisions at the forefront for decision-making. “Is this good for the athletes? Is it as “fair” as possible? What would the financial implication be? What does the membership think?” Please consider reading the posted minutes on the website to keep up with the latest board and committee happenings.

This is an opportunity to reflect on this past year, noting all of the struggles and adaptations that have been made. The good news: WACPC was able to offer competitive opportunities for our athletes, despite COVID restrictions. Many thanks to awesome site directors, hard-working WACPC Board members, coaches, judges and volunteers. Everyone stepped up for our athletes!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
This summer the Board will be busy updating the policies in the handbook and the website. There are considerations to registration, deadlines, divisions, safety, quizzes, the All State selection process, judge training, as well as sites for 2022. Committees will be meeting in June to take up these issues as well as any submitted by membership. I hope you enjoy the WACPC Year in Review. Morgan Flury and her team have worked hard to capture the essence of the year. Please join me in appreciating all your team has been able to accomplish as well as the collective accomplishments of all. Thanks for allowing me to be part of WACPC leadership these past six years. I have enjoyed working with all of you as we have moved forward and made changes. The memes created by the athletes and all of the hugs have been humbling for sure! Honoring the Coach of the Year and being photographed with a Port Washington dancer displaying a letter of intent from Viterbo were recent highlights! (Thanks, Isabelle!) I have been fortunate to work with a dedicated Board of Directors, all volunteering their time and energy to the sports of cheer and dance. I will miss many of the opportunities WACPC has afforded me. Yet, I look forward to continuing to work on the board as the Past President to ensure a bright future for Wisconsin’s Cheer and Dance sports. I would like to extend congratulations to our new President, Carrie Luedtke from East Troy, and our new Vice President Alea Norrish from Eau Claire. Thankfully, our Treasurer, Julie Pankow from Hortonville, and Secretary, Lisa Gerdman from Pewaukee, will continue to serve. The new executive board will undoubtedly be awesome and will continue to move WACPC forward for all of us! Sincerely,

2022 Scholarships The Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches is proud to offer twenty individual $1,000 Scholarships to graduating seniors of the Class of 2022, who are involved in Cheerleading and Pom/Dance programs in their schools. CRITERIA FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION: Team Coach must be a current member of WACPC Academic Achievement Extracurricular Activities Graduating Senior Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Amid the COVID year, that we have all gone through, WACPC would like to “Congratulate” the 2021 recipients of the WACPC Coach Of The Year Award to: CHEER: Suzi Robole, Cheer Coach at Hudson High School & Ryan Middlestaedt, Cheer Coach at Wilmont Union High School DANCE: Jessica Butelyn, Dance Coach at Laconia High School & Jennifer Toth, Dance Coach at Brookfield East High School

CHEER COACH OF THE YEAR Hudson High School When parents talk about Coach Suzi, they say words such as fair, firm, fun, compassionate, inventive, a leader and the list goes on and on. Coach is a great choreographer, having the ability to envision a routine and make changes with ease. She is a firm believer in giving back to the community too – having her teams get involved in the Penny Run, Polar Plunge and highway clean-up. Coach has touched the lives and hearts of so many, and I have enjoyed being her assistant as well as a former parent. Her passion and dedication for Cheerleading can really be seen in the way she coaches and the well-rounded athletes she produces. She looks out for everyone on the team, making sure that we are putting our health before cheer! 30
Coach is a great coach and one of a kind. She knows just how to push the girls to reach the glass ceiling of their skills and abilities. She knows when to back off and when to take a moment to remind them to have confidence in themselves and visualize their successes. She cares about her girls. Managing a team of cheerleaders is difficult. Managing a team of teenage-angst cheerleaders going through COVID-19 is a level not many would like to approach, but she does it endearingly. Coach inspires the team by personal examples. She takes time to listen and understand what is going on with her cheerleaders and then provides examples on how she’s dealt with similar situations and what she’s done to resolve the issue. Coach’s greatest strength is her connection with her athletes. Whether it’s daily social media positive posts to her girls, organizing pasta dinners, or trips to a pumpkin patch, she really wants to put an emphasis on being a family. She puts in countless hours personally meeting with each athlete and checking on them to make sure they are okay. Her hard work and dedication to her athletes with their stunts and cheers, led the squad to a state championship last year.

Our coach is a teacher in the district, who took over a dance team she really knew or had no experience with. With help from our assistant coach, and lots of research, the two lead our team to state in their first year of coaching. Along with this new adventure, coach was diagnosed with terminal cancer on her lungs. Our team stood by her and with our season in full swing, she decided to keep coaching for the team and her new family. She cares so deeply about the team and treats every girl as if they’re her daughters. She has put endless hours out of practice to make our team the best. I remember the first parent meeting with coach. She discussed clear expectations on what it takes to build a strong team. It was very clear that she wasn’t going to allow the girls to be negative- only positive vibes were allowed. She has helped some of the girls through some issues and is a role model that the team can count on to help them to do the right thing.
When I think about Coach, the word that comes to mind is ‘cheerleader.’ I recognize the irony given she is a dance team coach (and everyone knows that dance team is not the same as cheer), but she truly is a ‘cheerleader’ for her team, school and community. She is dedicated, caring and supportive! She is a coach, a leader, a mentor, a teacher, a kind, hardworking and thoughtful person, a friend, a mother figure, and someone that makes a lasting impact on people. She has a special love, drive and talent of teaching and mentoring dancers that both motivate dancers as well as instilling the drive to accomplish their goals. Coach makes everyone around her smile! She means the best for everyone and will not let anyone fail. She plans fun activities when we attend competitions; shopping, team dinners, fashion shows, pool night and writing letters to each other! She enjoys team bonding and makes special treats for all of us when we share what we are most proud of and what she is proud of us for! At the end-of-the-year banquet it is evident that the seniors have a hard time leaving the team from the countless tears and brief pauses in their goodbye speeches.
Even though COVID makes it more dangerous for her to coach, she continues to go to practice every day. I couldn’t ask for a better role model for my daughter to have as a coach.

To promote cheer and dance programs throughout the State of Wisconsin. To develop guidelines and recommendations for the improvement of cheer and dance programs. To encourage administrators to hire well-qualified personnel to serve in the capacity as cheer and dance coaches. To provide opportunities for the development of cheer and dance coaching skills. To provide resources for cheer and dance coaches.
WIAA ENDORSEMENT The WIAA and its member schools have recognized and endorsed the Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches as the organization aligned with school-based programs in the state since 2003. Although a number of other non-school competitions are offered by profit-seeking interests, the WACPC provides competitions and education for cheer and dance teams that embrace the ideals of interscholastic activities.
WACPC ETHICS STATEMENT WACPC Member Coaches should…. • Consistently uphold the integrity of the profession. • Have thorough knowledge of the safety rules. • Respect and support competing athletes, teams, coaches, competition administrators, and judges • Actively use their influence to promote sportsmanship.
COMPREHENSIVE ETHICS STATEMENT Coaching ethics means conforming to professional standards or moral conduct. Cheer and Dance coaches have a tremendous influence in the education of an athlete. Never place the value of winning above the value of instilling the highest ideals of character. • • • •
Coaches should consistently uphold the integrity of the profession; strive to set an example of highest ethical and moral conduct. Coaches should have thorough knowledge of the safety rules. Competition administrators and judges shall have the respect and support of the coach. Public criticism of competing athletes, teams, coaches, competition administrators, or judges is unethical. Conduct that incites athletes or spectators against these personnel is unethical constructive criticism or concerns should be directed to the WACPC Board of Directors. Coaches shall actively use their influence to promote sportsmanship. While it is impossible for competition administrators or judges to monitor the ethical behavior of athletes, teams, or coaches, these rules exist on an honor system.
Examples of unethical coaching may be, but are not limited to: • Using choreography from a camp, youtube, or other video sources in its entirety or in large sections. • Displaying poor sportsmanship during or after the competition or awards. • Using ineligible athletes. • Failure to show proper respect during National Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance. • Using social media to publicly criticize or bully individual athletes, entire teams, coaches, competition administrators, or judges.
