The peace prize honors atomic bomb survivors advocating against nuclear weapons, while the economics prize reveals how inclusive institutions can drive prosperity. Together, these achievements embody Alfred Nobel’s vision for a more knowledgeable and compassionate world.

David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper

Awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their groundbreaking discovery of microRNA in the small worm C. elegans, a fundamental breakthrough in understanding gene regulation. Their work revealed how these small RNA molecules control which genes are active in different cell types, allowing for the distinct characteristics of cells across complex organisms. Their findings have paved the way for advancements in genetic research and potential therapies for diseases involving gene regulation.

John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton were honored for their pioneering work in neural networks, which laid the groundwork for machine learning. Hopfield developed a network in 1982 that could remember and recreate patterns, inspired by systems in physics.

Hinton later introduced the Boltzmann machine, which uses statistical methods to recognize patterns in data. Together, their contributions have transformed AI, enabling machines to mimic cognitive functions such as learning and memory, widely impacting fields like image analysis and natural language processing.

David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper received this prize for revolutionizing protein design and prediction. Baker’s work on designing new proteins with specific functions and Hassabis and Jumper’s development of AlphaFold2 have enabled researchers to predict protein structures with remarkable accuracy. This has expanded applications in medicine, from creating novel drugs and vaccines to engineering environmental solutions, underscoring the essential role of protein structure in biological functions.

South Korean author Han Kang was awarded for her profound exploration of human fragility and historical trauma through her powerful poetic prose.

Known for her acclaimed novels such as The Vegetarianand Human Acts, Han Kang addresses themes of personal resistance and societal violence, notably reflecting on events like the Gwangju massacre. Her work delves into the moral and existential conflicts individuals face, confronting the invisible societal rules that shape lives.

Presented to Nihon Hidankyo, Japan’s largest atomic bomb survivors’ organization, for their tireless advocacy against nuclear weapons. Formed by Hibakusha survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the movement has worked to ensure that the catastrophic impact of nuclear weapons is remembered, highlighting the urgent need for disarmament through educational outreach and survivor testimonies. This award underscores Nihon Hidankyo’s dedication to peace and the prevention of future nuclear tragedies.

Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson were recognized for their influential research linking societal institutions with economic prosperity.

By examining historical colonization and the resulting political systems, they demonstrated how inclusive institutions foster economic growth, while extractive systems limit it. Their work provides key insights into how societies can evolve from restrictive to inclusive structures, emphasizing the role of grassroots efforts in creating equitable, thriving economies.

日本最大の被爆者団体である日本被団協 （日本原水爆被害者団体協議会）が、核 兵器に反対する不屈の活動により授与。 広島と長崎の被爆者たちが中心となって 設立したこの団体は、教育的アウトリー チと被爆者証言を通じて、核兵器の壊滅 的な影響を記憶にとどめ、軍縮の緊急性 を強調する活動を続けてきました。今回 の受賞は、被爆から約 80 年にわたる被 爆者たちの平和への願いと、「二度と同 じ悲劇を繰り返してはならない」という 強い決意が認められたものです。

N O B E L W E E K L I G H T S 2 0 2 4 The 2024 Nobel Week Lights festival in Stockholm offers an immersive experience with art installations that include an 80-meter tunnel of light and sound, spinning lotus flowers that glow, and a mesmerizing sea of flowing light where you can watch your reflection. A special installation on the City Hall façade will celebrate female Nobel Prize laureates. The festival will light up with sixteen captivating light artworks starting on December 7th.

12 月 7 日から、ストックホルムの街が光のアートに包まれる『ノ ーベルウィーク・ライツ 2024（Nobel Week Lights 2024）』 が開催されます。会場では、80 メートルもの光と音が織りなすト ンネルや、ゆらめく蓮の花、まるで光の海に身を浸すような幻想的 な作品など、様々な光のアート作品を体験することができます。ま た、市庁舎の壁面には、歴代の女性ノーベル賞受賞者たちを讃える 特別な光の演出も予定されています。街のいたるところに設置され る 16 点の作品が、冬のストックホルムの夜を美しく彩ります。

As Art Basel Miami Beach prepares for its December 6-8, 2024 return, the stage is set for one of the art world’s most anticipated gatherings, boasting an expanded gallery lineup, fresh curatorial talent, and a rich program of talks and large-scale installations. The fair reflects its vibrant home region, featuring strong representation from North, Central, and South America, which is deeply valued. At the same time, it attracts galleries from Asia, Africa, and Europe, creating a dynamic blend of global viewpoints. This year, 286 leading galleries from 38 countries and territories will participate, including 34 first-time exhibitors, presenting a diverse array of Modern and contemporary works across painting, sculpture, photography, and multimedia art. Key sectors, such as Meridians – curated for the first time this year by Yasmil Raymond – will showcase monumental installations, while Positions and Nova put a spotlight on emerging and mid-career artists. Together, these elements make Art Basel Miami Beach a vibrant intersection of art, culture, and global trends. As Director of Art Basel Miami Beach, how do you envision the fair’s role in reflecting and shaping current trends and movements in contemporary art?

Art Basel Miami Beach is the largest and most important art fair in the Americas, and its scale and reach make it one of the most dynamic art markets globally.

This year, the show will host 286 premier galleries from around the world – twothirds hailing from the Americas – each carefully selected for the quality of their artistic program and booth proposal. Over the years, Art Basel Miami Beach has grown to become the most important event in the American cultural calendar – attracting not only art professionals and enthusiasts but also key power players from across fashion, music, entertainment, and design. It’s a time when multiple creative industries converge, setting the tone for future art movements. The artists showcased here, and the works that captivate the audience, give us a clear view of the trends and movements currently shaping contemporary art.

Each sector of Art Basel Miami Beach, such as Meridians, Positions, and Survey, caters to different aspects of Modern and contemporary art. How does each sector play in the overall success of the fair?

Each sector creates a unique moment of discovery for visitors. This year, our Meridians sector, focusing on large-scale sculptures and installations, is being reimagined by Yasmil Raymond, who brings exceptional curatorial expertise.

Visitors can expect an almost sculpture park-like experience, where they can interact with monumental works from various perspectives. Nova sector, which is unique to Miami Beach in Art Basel's global portfolio of fairs, presents works made in the last three years, offering an ideal starting point for young and emerging collectors. Positions sector showcases solo presentations by emerging artists, offering a snapshot of the latest trends. Survey highlights solo historical proposals, often featuring underrecognized moments in artists’ careers. Together, these sectors ensure there’s something unique and engaging for everyone.

You’ve introduced several innovative support initiatives aimed at mid-career and emerging galleries. How they are structured and what criteria are used for selection?

Supporting galleries at various stages of growth is a priority for us. Since 2019, Art Basel operates according to a sliding scale pricing model, whereby galleries with a larger booth pay more per square meter than galleries with a smaller booth. We adopted this system globally across all our shows to ensure a more level playing field for galleries across all segments of the market. We firmly believe that small and mid-size galleries play an essential role in a healthy art ecosystem and it's incredibly important that they see a viable avenue for participation across our shows. In addition, this year for the Miami Beach show, we introduced a new minimum-size booth option aimed at creating a more accessible and equitable starting point for small and mid-size exhibitors entering Galleries, the main sector of the show.

This flexibility lets emerging galleries transition 13

from sectors like Nova to the main gallery sector more easily. For example, around a dozen galleries opted for this smaller footprint, enabling them to grow their visibility and connect with new collectors affordably.

W i t h n ew c u r a to rs f o r M e r i d i a n s a n d Conversations, what innovative approaches can visitors expect?

In Mer idia n s, Ya sm i l’s ex per t ise in la rge scale sculpture brings a fresh perspective. The sector’s new layout this year, positioned closer to the main gallery area, will create a seamless f low and amplify the monumental impact of these works. This setup will serve as a “crown jewel” of the fair, creating a stronger dialogue between gallery exhibits and institutionally scaled works. In addition, our Conversations program in Miami Beach will be curated for the f irst time by Kimberly Bradley and will spark thought-provoking discussions among cross-industry leaders and changemakers. The

program is open free to the public each day of the show.

What sets Art Basel Miami Beach apart in the global art market, and how do you see it evolving in the coming years to sustain its leadership?

Art Basel Miami Beach is the most important art fair in the largest and most dynamic art market in the world. What happens at the fair charts the course for the larger art ecosystem globally.

The fair’s unique geographical and cultural position connects North, South, and Central America, and the diversity on our show f loor ref lects this regional nexus. This year, we’re hosting 286 galleries, each carefully selected for quality, making Art Basel Miami Beach the highlight of the Americas’ art calendar. Looking ahead, I envision the fair continuing to evolve in ways that foster cultural dialogue, connecting people to the diverse voices and perspectives represented in the global art world.

Arts and culture at the heart of development First Deputy Mayor of Paris – on holistic education, arts and culture knowledge and environmental awareness Patrick Bloche is a prominent French political figure who has committed his efforts to shaping the future of the Parisian youth through art, cultural initiatives and environmental education. Bloche, a dedicated public servant, has already enjoyed a fruitful career in the field of education and cultural projects, from a long-term position as the National Assembly deputy for nearly 20 years to the more recent post as the First Deputy Mayor of Paris to Mayor Anne Hidalgo. He explains that the field of education has always been his priority, as he served as Chair of the Education and Culture Committee, as well as made special arrangements to keep focus on educational programs in his new position. Patrick Bloche specifically underlines the importance of artistic and cultural knowledge integration into Parisian study programs, which he believes are key to personal and intellectual growth of the younger generation. He explains that these programs are central not only to the Parisian education system but also to its public reputation.

“In Paris, parents of schoolchildren believe that their child is not well-educated unless they receive artistic and cultural education, so it is really very present from an early age,” – Bloche says. He adds that children in Paris are also frequently given extracurricular activities associated with art, such as music or painting lessons, all of which provide “moments for artistic and cultural awakening”.

With these public expectations in mind, Paris’ First Deputy Mayor ensures students’ consistent education in arts through promoting frequent visits to the French capital’s cultural institutions, like theatres and museums, even for the youngest learners.

These school-sponsored activities are meant to ensure that young students develop appreciation for arts from an early age and gain in-depth knowledge about their country’s cultural heritage.

He also points out that, under his guidance, La Maison des Métallos, the city’s cultural hub famous for design exhibitions, art shows and music concerts, welcomes students throughout the year, further helping foster creativity.

Fostering environmental awareness

Taking French education to the next level

Bloche goes on to emphasise the importance of environmental education for Parisian students, noting that the young generation is actively involved in climate action and sustainability initiatives. “Environmental protection is their top priority; it really is their main concern. It is normal because it’s ultimately about the future of the planet they will live on”, – he says.

However, Bloche also highlights the logistical challenges of maintaining diverse educational facilities and prioritising environmental improvements in schools. For instance, he points out that the city of Paris has recently invested in thermal renovations, sustainable infrastructure, and reducing traffic near schools to enhance student well-being.

The politician adds that the city’s efforts on environmental awareness involve “incorporating environmental issues into educational programs and everything related to children’s proper education, allowing them to have learning experiences that take environmental challenges into account”. He says that, for children in primary and middle school, there is also an election for a position called the “éco-délégué (eco-delegate)” – for a student who would be responsible for relaying environmental concerns.

For years now, France has been engaged in a gradual ecological transition, including the Paris Agreement of 2016 and, most recently, numerous environmental initiatives incorporated into the arrangement of the Olympics in Paris earlier this year.

In line with these trends, three years ago the city authorities have introduced programs like the Climate Academy for people aged between 9 and 25 years for them to be able to take group action and promote environmental awareness among peers and adults. The academy offers opportunities for young people to discover training spaces, workshops, as well as take part in mobilisation debates for climate change.

“Our primary responsibility is to ensure good schooling conditions, particularly regarding facilities”, – he notes.

Bloche adds that another recent initiative has been to t ra n sfor m t he schoolya rd s , wh ich ha s been goi n g on successfully, with 165 schools out of 630 have already been transformed in Paris. “We are removing asphalt that creates heat in summer, installing permeable surfaces, as well as adding vegetation – that is, putting in lots of greenery and water points”.

He further explains that, as a result of extensive measures taken by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, air pollution in the city has been reduced by 40% which has had a positive impact on education in recent years. Because of this, there is no longer a need to close schools to avoid risks to children’s health in the periods of high air pollution, allowing the authorities to avoid disruptions to the learning process.

Experiencing t h e P A S T The very buildings at Château de Versailles carry the memories of France’s glorious past, with extravagant Baroque elements both inside and in the outdoor spaces, including halls, chapels, parks and fountains.

The latter are praised by Brunner especially: the fountains, dating back to the 17th century, are still operational, help immerse the visitors into the atmosphere of the past and let them see exactly what the royalty living hundreds of years ago was seeing with their own eyes every day.

“It is an honour to present the heritage of the fountains,” – Brunner says. “The first big fountain system in Europe and all the world, from the 17th century, is still functioning like in that period, with no electricity inside”. The fountains are also involved in the famous fountain show in the Versailles garden which the guests can enjoy during their visit.

Brunner says that Opéra Royal and the chapel at Versailles also offer visitors a glimpse into the past, with the events taking place in these spaces that remained largely untouched since their creation. For instance, the building of the opera was constructed back in the time of King Louis XV for royal weddings and other important events, with Brunner describing this historic space as “a shrine of a beautiful ceremony”.

The building was created mostly for intimate ceremonies, in which only a handful of people close to the crown took part. Each royal wedding spread across three magnificent evenings with opera performances, elaborate dinners and dances.

These occasions were so rare that the place was only used 20 times in 19 years, Brunner explains. Today, the visitors of Château de Versailles have a unique opportunity to get a feel of what that was like when coming to listen to concerts at Opéra Royal.

Upholding TRADITION In extensive efforts to preserve the centuries of its heritage, Versailles promotes traditional artforms, such as Baroque performances with the use of period instruments to pay tribute to the long cultural and musical history of France.

“We are playing the music of the old time on period instruments,” – Brunner explains. “String musicians play instruments that are copies of old instruments; they have a different pitch, so they sound different to modern ones”.

He adds that the stage productions at the Opéra Royal are carefully tailored to uphold the spirit of history. “We try to do not old-fashioned projects, but projects that you can see without disturbing the place,” – he adds.

“In a beautiful place like this, which is also a symbol of French heart, of European heart, and of course, a jewel of the art of the world, it is good to have performances in the same kind of the shrine, which is absolutely incredible”.

For Brunner, similar principles are applied at the Museum of Versailles, which he views as a space for a unique blend of tradition and modern times. “A monument cannot be only a museum where nothing is moving, it must change,” – he explains.

In this spirit, the museum makes bold choices to re-imagine its historical space to welcome contemporary influences, with some of the past exhibitions including works by Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons.

Centuries of OPERA It was originally Laurent Brunner’s decision to open the opera for the public and start running shows because, in the past, it was difficult to organise, as well as very costly.

“Making opera is a big cost because you have musicians, you have singers, and you have rehearsal time, and you have a lot of technique, and this is long, so for example three weeks to prepare it,” – he says, describing the complex decision making that went into the successful renaissance of Opéra Royal.

Brunner also highlights Opéra Royal’s strong commitment to the works of lesser-performed composers from the 17th and 18th centuries, making Versailles a distinct venue in the opera world. He proudly announces that the selection of music at the venue is meant to promote the niche French composers who are rarely showcased in other opera houses.

“No other opera in the world will play Charpentier, Lully, Monteverdi in the same year, never”, – he says. Altogether, Opéra Royal hosts up to 110 performances each year, including opera, ballet, and theatre.

Beyond performances, Versailles has produced a CD collection that has found popularity even in Japan, drawing global interest in its unique selection of early French music.

THE MUSÉE MARMOTTAN MONET Property of the Académie des Beaux-Art, the Musée Marmottan Monet celebrates a long history of rich artistic talent. It was founded in 1934 and originally showed pieces from the First Empire. After a major donation of Monet’s pieces in 1966 and a 1985 donation of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, the focus tilted toward Impressionism.

Changes are on the horizon, however. The museum is looking to expand and reorganise so that it can offer visitors a more integrated and engaging experience. The museum’s current director, Erik Desmazières, is enthusiastic about these changes. He took over in 2020 and is eager to build on the museum’s existing artistic appeal.

UPGRADING and IMPROVING Exciting updates lie ahead for the Musée Marmottan Monet.

The chosen architect, Bruno Gaudin, has worked on other crucial buildings in France, including Musée Guimet. He will be looking to enhance the space both practically and in terms of artwork arrangements. The restoration will begin in January 2027 and is expected to take around 3 years to complete.

The renovation will make the first floor more accessible and create space for a new restaurant, offering guests greater f lexibility and potentially enabling corporations to host events in a larger, higher-ceilinged venue. Additionally, the project will expand storage capacity, allowing the museum to grow, adapt, and diversify its displays.

This transformation aligns with a fresh vision to present the museum's collection in a more unified and coherent way.

Desmazières explained, “Right now, it’s too divided. On the first floor, you have Berthe Morisot, and downstairs, Claude Monet.” The renovation aims to bring these artists together, enhancing visitors’ ability to appreciate the dialogue and connections between their works.

Additionally, as visitor numbers increase in the postCOVID-19 world, more space is needed. The garden and the garden house are included in the renovation plans. These were created by Paul Marmottan, a French art historian, collector, and patron.

He points out that many of the museum’s acquisitions are “given by collectors … and we really want to keep this intimate atmosphere, not being too high-tech.”

At present, the museum very much captures the soul of an enthusiastic collector’s home. Visitors step through the doors and feel they could be in an artist’s house. Renovations will work around this core feeling to ensure the museum remains in touch with its artistic roots.

The Musée Marmottan Monet has much to offer, with a wide array of acclaimed artwork to pique visitors’ interest. It provides a deep understanding of Impressionism and the influences that it has had upon the art world, both in its own time and since.

MORCEAUX CHOISIS

Two exhibitions are running at present. The “Carole Benzaken Morceaux choisis” is open from 17th October 2024 to 16th February 2025, and “Le Trompe-L’œil de 1520 à Nos Jours” is open from 17th October 2024 to 2 March 2025. Both promise opportunities for visitors to slip under the skin of the art world and gain an enhanced understanding of the dialogues at play.

Carole Benzaken’s work has appeared in exhibitions for decades.

She first rose to prominence in 1994 at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. Since then, she has done many solo shows and exhibitions, and she is widely regarded as an exceptional artist.

The Morceaux choisis (“Selected Pieces”) represents the first time that she has had carte blanche from the museum to use different spaces to display a wide selection of her works. This allows visitors to interact with her vision and creativity in a 35

first-hand, engaging way.

The “Trompe-l’œil” exhibition makes the most of optical illusions and brings the two-dimensional to life. It invites v iewer s t o con s ider p er s p e c t ive a nd p ercept ion . The exhibition will highlight the beauty of this collection, which contains more than 80 significant works. They range from the 16th century to the 21st century, across Europe and the United States. For visitors fascinated by these works, its remarkable scope offers a unique opportunity to connect with the collection and marvel over the diversity, nuances, and convergences within the niche.

In April 2025, the Festival Beethoven à Beaune will return with a heartfelt tribute to the enduring power of family legacies in shaping classical music. Taking place from April 3 to 6, the festival’s theme, “Domaine Familial,” will shine a spotlight on the deep connections within musical dynasties and the inspiration they’ve passed on through generations.

Set against the historical beauty of Beaune, the festival promises a rich exploration of heritage, artistry, and community, all under the expert direction of President Frédéric Mugnier and Artistic Director Sung-Won Yang.

HONORING the BONDS of MUSIC and HERITAGE For Mugnier, the theme of family legacies strikes a personal chord. “In Burgundy, estates are passed down through families, much like the great composers who passed their musical legacies to future generations,” he shares. The 2025 festival will celebrate these interconnected family stories by showcasing the works of the Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, and the Schumann families. “These dynasties influenced one another and future generations, creating music that has stood the test of time,” Mugnier reflects.

This year’s program marks a distinctive departure from Beethoven’s own works—an intentional choice that Mugnier is eager to explain. “Beethoven’s influence is all-encompassing.

He was shaped by the composers before him, and his impact resonates in the works of those who came after. Though his music is not featured in this edition, his presence will be felt throughout the festival.”

The festival’s concerts will take place in Beaune’s most historic venues, including the iconic Hospices de Beaune and the Lanterne Magique, where the architecture itself offers a sense of connection to the music. “These spaces are vital to the experience. They link the music’s history with its present-day audience,” Mugnier notes. The festival will also extend its reach to Dijon, offering an expanded program to engage even more listeners.

The performances will not only celebrate the musical families being honored but will also highlight the personal connections between the artists. The program features duos such as Hélène and Eric Levionnois, as well as baroque specialists Kaori Uemura and Ryo Terakado, whose artistry is deeply rooted in their cultural heritage. “When performers share a personal connection to the music or to each other, it creates a unique energy that the audience can truly feel,” Mugnier explains.

Keiichi Tanaami, a visionary artist whose work spanned painting, collage, animation, and sculpture, led Japan’s art scene for over six decades while earning worldwide acclaim. On August 9 of this year, during his first major retrospective exhibition, Keiichi Tanaami: Adventures in Memory , he passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy.

The sudden announcement of his passing on the second day of the exhibition sent shockwaves through the art world. However, his unwavering dedication to the exhibition was profoundly felt by the many visitors who came to experience his art. This article reflects on the remarkable life and career of Keiichi Tanaami.

Breaking Boundaries in Artistic Expression Tanaami’s psychedelic, surreal works, characterized by their vivid colors and bold imagery, are unforgettable and have received critical acclaim both in Japan and abroad.

His creative drive only grew stronger with age, continuing unabated even into his 80s.

ジャンルを超えた創作活動 極彩色で表現されるサイケデリックでシュールな世界。一度 目にしたら忘れられない強烈で独創的な田名網氏の作品は、 国内外で高く評価されています。その創作意欲は 80 歳を過 ぎてなお勢いを増し、最後まで留まるところを知りませんで した。

He began his artistic journey in the 1960s, an era when pop art swept the globe and psychedelic culture flourished.

Tanaami gained recognition for his vibrant, pop-inspired illustrations and design work, thriving as an illustrator and graphic designer.

Simultaneously, he engaged with the avantgarde art collective Neo-Dada Organizers , breaking away from the conventions of art and design. In 1966, he produced PORTRAIT OF KEIICHI TANAAMI an artist book, and edited Kyozo Mirai Zukan (Illustrated Book of Imaginary Tomorrow), a groundbreaking work in Tokyo’s underground art scene that remains a landmark in Japanese art history.

Inspired by Andy Warhol and Japan’s PLAYBOY One pivotal influence on Tanaami’s multifaceted creative direction was his encounter with Andy Warhol’s works around 1963. At the time, Warhol was transitioning from an illustrator to a fine artist.

This exposure inspired Tanaami to broaden his creative horizons and explore multiple mediums.

“I saw Warhol as the perfect role model,” Tanaami later recalled. “Like him, I decided to pursue what I wanted without being confined by categories like fine art or design.”

Tanaami’s reputation soared in 1975 when he was appointed the first art director of the Japanese edition of PLAYBOY. magazine. His innovative editorial vision captivated audiences. Based on his unique belief that “printed materials are not reproductions but countless original works,” Tanaami used diverse methods—including painting, animation, and installation—to express his distinctive artistic universe.

Life and Death: A New Artistic Focus "Life and Death": New Artistic Themes Born from Health Struggles In 1981, at the height of his career, Tanaami faced a severe illness that brought him close to death. His four-month hospitalization deeply influenced his perspective, inspiring him to create a series of mystical works centered on themes of life and death. Drawing on the hallucinations and visions he experienced during his illness, Tanaami remarked, “Being acutely aware of death connects us to life and becomes a powerful force for creativity.”

A Vibrant Fusion of Reality and Fantasy Tanaami remained highly active into the 2000s, revisiting past memories and reinterpreting motifs from earlier works to create increasingly complex and dynamic worlds. His creations were acquired by renowned institutions like the Museum of Modern Art in New York, further cementing his international recognition.

He also collaborated with fashion brands and musicians, continually expanding his artistic reach. In 1991, Tanaami became a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design (now Kyoto University of the 51

His Final Retrospective: “Keiichi Tanaami: Adventures in Memory” Keiichi Tanaami: Adventures in Memory , held at the National Art Center, Tokyo, from August 7 to November 11, 2024, marked Tanaami’s first large-scale retrospective and became the last exhibition he worked on. Featuring approximately 500 works—including paintings, collages, animations, and sculptures—the exhibition offered visitors a comprehensive exploration of his vibrant artistic world.

Although Tanaami passed away on the second day of the exhibition and could not witness its success, he shared his thoughts on the theme of “memory” in a final interview conducted shortly before the event: “All my works are based on memories and dreams. Memory might even be a fictional construct created by the brain. By transforming memories into artworks, I confront myself objectively. Memory is a subject I’ve always sought to explore, expressing it in countless forms.”

Starting as a designer, Tanaami became a pivotal figure in Japan’s pop art and underground art scenes. His works, which transcended traditional genres, continue to influence the next generation of artists.

By fusing pop art with war memories and blending Eastern and Western elements, Tanaami’s art will remain a source of inspiration and reevaluation for years to come.

闘病生活から見えた新たなテーマ「生と死」 アーティストとして多忙な日々を送っていた田名網氏です が、1981 年に大病を患い、生死の境を彷徨います。４か 月の入院生活は氏の意識を変え、闘病中に見た幻覚や幻想 をモチーフに「生と死」をテーマとした神秘主義的な作品 を数多く残しました。田名網氏は「死を身近に意識するこ とが生きることにつながるし、創作を支える強固なエネル ギーになることを知った」と語っています。 現実と虚構が入り混じったダイナミックな世界 田名網氏は 2000 年以降も精力的な活動を続けました。過 去の記憶をたどり、それまでの作品に現れたモチーフを組 み合わせ、より複雑でダイナミックな世界を作り上げまし た。その結果、ニューヨーク近代美術館をはじめとする世 界の名だたる美術館に作品が所蔵されるなど、世界的にも 評価が高まりました。 また、ファッションブランドやミュージシャンとのコラボ レーションも次々と発表。1991 年には京都造形芸術大学 （現・京都芸術大学）の教授に就任し、若手作家の育成に も尽力しました。 最後に手がけた大規模回顧展 国立新美術館で 2024 年 8 月 7 日から 11 月 11 日まで 開催された「田名網敬一 記憶の冒険」は、彼が企画段階 から情熱を注いだ初の大規模回顧展であり、最後に手がけ た展覧会となりました。絵画やコラージュ、アニメーショ ン、立体作品など約 500 点もの作品が展示され、「田名 網ワールド」を存分に堪能できる内容となりました。 田名網氏は展覧会開幕 2 日目に逝去し、残念ながら会場を 訪れることはかないませんでしたが、展覧会前に行われた 本誌の最後のインタビューで、「記憶」というテーマにつ いてこう語っています。 「私の作品はすべて記憶や夢に基づいています。記憶は、 自分の脳が作り上げた虚構である可能性もある。記憶を作 品化することで、自分自身と客観的に向き合います。記憶 は私にとって探求すべき対象で、それをさまざまな形で表 現してきました」。 デザイナーとしてキャリアをスタートし、ポップアートや アンダーグラウンドのアートシーンを牽引してきた田名網 敬一氏。ジャンルの枠を超えた作品群は、次世代のアーテ ィストたちにも強い影響を与えています。ポップアートと 戦争の記憶、東洋と西洋の要素を融合させたその世界は、 これからも再評価され続けるでしょう。 Gen de Art Dec 2024

Since its transformation in 2011, the seventh floor of Louis Vuitton’s Omotesando store, designed by architect Jun Aoki, has become a cultural landmark for contemporary art. Known as Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, this exhibition space under the auspices of the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s "Hors-les-murs" program invites audiences to explore new artistic expressions.

From showcasing artists like Yang Fudong and Jesu Rafael Soto from around the globe, Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo is committed to celebrating artistic diversity. This season, the Espace unveils a fresh perspective with "Thirteen Paintings" by New York-based artist Wade Guyton, marking the first time this work is exhibited.

The installation is as thought-provoking as the artworks themselves. Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo’s transparent walls posed an intriguing challenge for the artist, as Guyton found nowhere to traditionally hang his paintings.

Inspired by the architectural design, he opted to place his works in front of the expansive windows, allowing Tokyo's urban landscape to interplay with the artwork. To enhance this effect, Guyton collaborated with the Espace’s team to design a custom hanging structure that integrates the city’s skyline as part of the visual experience. "The city becomes part of the visual experience of the works," Guyton remarks, noting that the urban environment adds a unique layer to the installation.

"Thirteen Paintings", a striking fusion of technology and artistry, exemplifies Guyton’s signature approach. Rather than traditional painting methods, Guyton utilized an Epson inkjet printer to create each work, resulting in unique pieces that blend photography and digital art. Speaking about the unconventional medium, Guyton explains, "They’re printed, they’re not painted by hand, so even though they’re made with a photographic machine, they’re all unique. They can’t be repeated."

Guyton’s work also captures snapshots of his creative process, presenting scenes from his New York studio where many of these pieces were conceived. Images of his studio, wet ink, and even snippets from the New York Times website reveal an intimate portrait of the artist’s dayto-day, incorporating both abstract imagery and personal moments. "When I’m working in the studio, I might be working on an abstract image, and then at the same time, I might be reading the news… so I will then simultaneously print a painting of the news of the day," Guyton shares. In doing so, "Thirteen Paintings" serves as a visual archive, documenting his artistic evolution.

More than an exhibition, these thirteen paintings becomes a shared experience where art, city, and viewer meet in unexpected harmony. Through his inventive use of space and technology, Guyton transforms each painting into a dialogue with Tokyo’s landscape, inviting audiences to step inside his creative process.

Reflecting on his approach, Guyton shares, “Art isn’t just about the finished piece—it’s about the journey, the environment, and the moment that brought it to life.”

The inaugural exhibition, “Whispers in the Wholeness”, curated by the esteemed artist Yoshitomo Nara, encapsulates the collaborative journey among artists, the gallery, and its audience.

Since its establishment in 2015, Yutaka Kikutake Gallery has excelled at weaving art into everyday life through its exhibitions, the lifestyle magazine 疾駆 /chic, and Art Club—a communityfocused initiative aimed at promoting artistic engagement among families and children.

Kikutake envisions this new gallery as an extension of these ideals, a sanctuary where art inspires reflection, ignites curiosity, and deepens our understanding of existence. “Art should permeate our lives, not just be something we observe but something we inhabit,” he emphasizes. “With this gallery, we aim to create an experience where art is as essential as breathing.”

Inviting Yoshitomo Nara to curate the inaugural exhibition was a natural choice for Kikutake. “I trust Nara’s vision implicitly.

He possesses a remarkable ability to discover resonance in the quiet, unseen corners of life and unite artists who embody this contemplative spirit,” Kikutake explains. “His deep understanding of contemporary art aligns perfectly with our aspiration to make it a vital part of daily life.”

In “Whispers in the Wholeness”, Nara has assembled a group of emerging artists he met during his recent travels to Hokkaido.

Their works are deeply connected to their intimate experiences with nature, serving as a conduit to the spirituality that resides within the natural world. The exhibition features contributions from Kineta Kunimatsu, Nanami Saito, Hokuto Watanabe, BOTAN & sumire, along with Nara himself. Each artwork invites visitors to pause, breathe, and reconnect with a reality that often goes unnoticed yet resonates with quiet strength and resilience.

“Nature is filled with whispers—gentle voices that can only be heard when we slow down and listen,” Kikutake muses. “In these shared spaces, we glimpse our belonging within a greater whole.”

Through this exhibition, Kikutake and Nara offer a compelling vision of experiencing art in its purest form, revealing timeless, universal themes within the gallery space. Kikutake envisions future expansions of the gallery to include a restaurant, fostering a communal atmosphere for art, conversation, and shared experiences that seamlessly integrate into everyday living.

HOKUTO WATANABE, both artist and cattle farmer, sculpts wooden figures inspired by Hokkaido’s folklore, offering reverent depictions of local gods and spirits that merge tradition with personal reverence. 渡辺北斗氏は、アーティストであり牛飼いでもあります。北海道 の民話から着想を得た木偶を制作し、土地の神々や精霊への畏敬 の念を表現しています。彼の作品からは、伝統と彼の深い崇敬の 念が見事に融合している様子を感じることができます。

NANAMI SAITO works with ceramics, crafting pieces that explore the mythical boundaries where human and nature meet, using her own body and elements from the wilderness to inspire deeply organic forms. 斉藤七海氏は、人間と自然が出会う神秘的な境界を陶芸を通して探 求しています。自身の身体感覚と自然の要素から着想を得た、生命 力あふれる奥深い形態が作品の特徴となっています。

Japanese artist Etsu Egami’s work, currently on view at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum until March 2025, draws audiences into a realm where language and meaning transcend boundaries. Born in Chiba in 1994, Egami has quickly ascended in the international art world, celebrated for her evocative explorations into the beauty and mystery of human communication. Her works, collected by high-profile figures including Korean actors Lee Byung-Hun and Lee Sang Heon, blend personal insight with a profound, universal appeal.

THE RAINBOW IN THE GREY 江上氏の芸術的探求は、多様な文化的背景の中 で培われてきました。ドイツの HfG（Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design）と北京の中 央美術学院での留学経験を通じて、言葉の限界 に直面しながらも、そこから生まれる新たな理 解の可能性に出会いました。この異文化間での 経験と言語の持つ脆さへの気づきは、言葉が 人々をつなぎ、時に分断するという矛盾に対す る深い探求へと江上氏を導きました。

Egami’s artistic journey has unfolded across various cultural landscapes. Educated at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in Germany and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, she encountered the nuances and gaps inherent in language — those moments when words fell short, yet new layers of understanding emerged. This exposure to cultural differences and the fragility of language sparked her deep exploration into how words can simultaneously connect and divide.

Her work has been exhibited at some of the world’s foremost institutions, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the CAFA Ar t Museum in Beijing, and the Wood One Museum of Art in Hiroshima. Most recently, she took part in the Miss Dior – “Stories of a Miss” group exhibition at Tokyo’s Roppongi Museum, 65

and her work is set to become part of Dior’s permanent collection — a testament to her rising influence within global art circles.

Following in the lineage of post-war Japanese artists like Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama, Egami’s art resonates with a fresh, introspective voice. Her practice addresses the fragmented nature of human expression, celebrating what she calls the “rainbow in the grey” — those moments of misinterpretation where truth, in all its complexity, reveals itself. “Language, while intended for communication, often becomes a barrier,” she reflects. “Yet, in moments of misunderstanding, something deeper emerges.

These instances remind me of a rainbow rising from grey. Each colour, distinct yet harmonious, symbolises hope, dreams, and the profound possibility of connection.”

江上氏の作品は、これまでニューヨークのソロ モン・R・グッゲンハイム美術館、北京の中央 美術学院美術館、広島のウッドワン美術館とい った世界屈指の美術館で展示されてきました。 さらに今年、東京の六本木ミュージアムで開催 された「ミス ディオール展覧会 ある女性の 物語」への出展を果たし、その作品がディオー ルの永久コレクションに加わることが決定。こ の功績は、国際アートシーンにおける江上氏の 存在感の高まりを如実に物語っています。 村上隆氏や草間彌生氏ら戦後日本を代表するア ーティストたちの系譜を継承しながらも、江上 氏は独自の新鮮で内省的な表現を確立していま す。人間のコミュニケーションが持つ断片的な 性質に着目した江上氏は、「灰色の中の虹」と いう独自の概念を提示します。これは、誤解が 生じる瞬間にこそ、真実がその複雑さとともに 姿を現すという洞察に基づいています。「言葉 は本来、理解を深めるためのものでありなが ら、むしろ障壁となることがあります。しかし、 その誤解の瞬間にこそ、より深い何かが立ち現 れるのです。それは、まるで灰色の空から突如 として現れる虹のよう。それぞれの色が独自の 存在感を放ちながらも調和を生み出し、希望や 夢、そして人々の深いつながりの可能性を象徴 しているのです」。

At the Asian Art Museum, Egami’s installations express her philosophy, using colour and form to express what words cannot. Her approach — which she describes as “paintings as installations” — expands traditional painting beyond conventional boundaries, creating a sensory experience that immerses viewers in a multi-dimensional language of colour, sound, and texture. Her works do not impose meaning but invite interpretation, reflecting her belief in the beauty within communication’s complexities.

Egami’s European education, particularly her time in Germany, provided her with a conceptual framework that continues to influence her practice. She recalls her initial surprise at the German art community’s emphasis on dialogue over definitive conclusions.

“The true aim wasn’t an answer but a more expansive perspective,” she explains. This mindset permeates her works, which seek not resolution but rather to inspire conversations that embrace ambiguity, leaving ample room for introspection.

Egami’s art reminds us of the beauty within dissonance, the power of respect for differences, and the promise of understanding that emerges when words become colours and stories transform into shades of shared experience. At the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, Egami’s art invites high-end collectors, critics, and art enthusiasts alike to explore her vision — a journey to discover the colours of communication in a world as complex as it is beautifully diverse.

HondaJet: Over 250 Deliveries Worldwide NBAA-BACE serves as a key platform for business aviation, featuring over 830 exhibitors showcasing cutting-edge aircraft and innovations. Honda Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of American Honda Motor Co., Ltd., has made significant strides in aviation with its HondaJet, a highperformance very light business jet that has gained popularity among executives worldwide. Since its debut, the HondaJet has delivered over 250 units; however, its revolutionary design initially raised eyebrows.

Former Honda Aircraft president Michimasa Fujino introduced the groundbreaking “Over-TheWing Engine Mount” configuration, which positions the engines above the wings—a design that is rare in the industry. Even U.S. engineers involved in the early testing were skeptical, reportedly stating, “These guys must be crazy.” Nonetheless, test results quickly affirmed the design’s remarkable performance. Yamasaki noted, “The engine placement challenged conventions but epitomized Honda’s innovative spirit. This design is a key factor behind the HondaJet’s success.”

Mission to Establish a Successful Business As Yamasaki succeeded Fujino, his focus shifted to positioning the HondaJet as a sustainable business. “While Fujino achieved engineering excellence with the HondaJet, my background is in sales and business development. Therefore, my mission is to leverage this aircraft as a business and create its future,” he explained. Yamasaki highlighted the collaborative efforts within Honda, stating, “Previously siloed departments now operate in an open, integrated manner. We’re also collaborating with our automotive and motorcycle divisions. Drawing on diverse expertise has inspired new discoveries and expanded our creative scope.”

世界で 250 機納入するホンダジェット 世界のビジネス航空業界をリードする「NBAA-BACE」。今年は約 830 社が一堂に会し、最先端の航空機や革新的イノベーションが展示 されました。ホンダエアクラフトカンパニーは自動車業界大手、ホン ダ（本田技研工業）の航空機事業子会社です。同社が製造販売する小 型ビジネスジェット機、ホンダジェットは、その性能の高さから世界 の上級管理職らに愛され、発売以来の累計納入台数は 250 機を超え ています。しかし、同機の開発をリードしたホンダエアクラフトカン パニーの先代社長、藤野道格氏の発想は「異端」とも思われました。 それは、業界の常識ではありえないエンジンを翼の上に乗せる「オー バー・ザ・ウイング エンジンマウント」という設計。性能試験を行 うために設備を借りた米国企業の社員からは、強い懐疑の念が示され たと言います。そうした中、実際に実験をしてみると素晴らしい性能 を発揮しました。山﨑社長は「（エンジン配置は）常識を外れたこと でしたが、それはまさしくホンダの新たなことに挑戦するという思 想。それが傑作になったという意味で（ホンダジェットは）非常に成 功しました」と振り返ります。

ビジネスを成功させることが使命 藤野前社長の後を継いだ山﨑社長が取り組んでいることは、ホンダジ ェットをビジネスとして成功させること。「技術者として最高のロー ンチをした藤野さんの後を受けましたが、私自身は全く技術者ではあ りません。ずっと営業や事業をやってきました。その為、いかにこの 飛行機を使ってビジネスをできるかに集中していて、その未来をつく っていくことが私の使命です」と述べます。 社内連携の取り組みについても、「これまではサイロ（孤立）化され ていた部門が、今では全てオープンになっています。ホンダ自身の中 で、自動車やバイクなど、さまざまな部門との連携も進めています。 多様な知恵を取り入れることで、みんながそれぞれ新たな発見をした り、想像力を広げたりしています」と語りました。

Continuous Evolution Since First Flight in 2003 The HondaJet has significantly evolved since its first experimental flight in 2003. Production began in October 2012, followed by official operations in December 2015, with subsequent upgrades resulting in models such as the “Elite,” “Elite S,” and “Elite II.” “Since the first flight, HondaJet has continuously evolved, improving both performance and safety. Compared to the initial model, its range has expanded by about 30%, reaching 1,547 nautical miles. With enhanced safety features like autothrottle, the fourth-generation ‘Elite II’ has nearly achieved all our goals in comfort, functionality, and safety.”

In October 2021, Honda Aircraft Company unveiled its latest advanced model, the "HondaJet Echelon," based on the "HondaJet 2600 Concept." This concept will boast a range of 2,625 nautical miles (4,862 kilometers), enabling non-stop flights across the continental United States from east to west—truly a "dream" aircraft. Yamasaki stated, “We plan to bring the HondaJet Echelon to market in 2028, and we are conducting very detailed planning for this project. We aim to leverage the presence of the HondaJet to drive this initiative towards success.”

Efforts Toward Carbon Neutrality Discussing the aviation industry's commitment to sustainability, Yamasaki remarked, “The entire industry aims to achieve carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. We are starting from the goal of ‘zero by 2050’ and are now in the stage of backcasting—figuring out how to achieve this.”

A significant aspect of this effort is the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which serves as an alternative to fossil-derived fuels. “The adoption of SAF depends on our customers. Since the price is more than double that of traditional fuels, there are challenges, but we are engaged in educational activities to encourage its use. We won’t be recognized by society unless we address the challenges of carbon neutrality. Private jets often carry the image of being luxurious toys for the wealthy and can be viewed critically. If we don’t properly address these issues, we believe we won’t create the next business opportunities.”

Furthermore, he stated, “Honda has always operated under the concept of ‘Blue Skies for Our Children,’ which aims to leave a clean sky for future generations. We want to take the lead in fulfilling our social responsibilities. We aspire to be a presence that can lead the industry, even with a smaller aircraft.” This challenge connects back to the dream of Honda's founder, Soichiro Honda, to “elevate human mobility to new heights.”

カーボンニュートラルへの取り組み 航空業界の持続可能性への取り組みについては、「カーボンニュートラルについて、温室効 果ガスの排出量を 2050 年までにゼロにしていきたいと業界全体で掲げています。『2050 年にはゼロにする』ことを起点とし、バックキャスト（逆算）してどうやってやるか。その ステージに入っています」と述べました。 その中で、大きな要素を占めるのが化石由来の燃料に変わる SAF（Sustainable Aviation Fuel ＝ 持続可能な航空燃料）と言われている代替燃料の使用。「実際に SAF を使っていただくと いうのはお客様次第。（価格が）従来の倍以上しているので、なかなか難しい部分もあります が、使っていただくよう啓蒙活動をしています。カーボンニュートラルの課題をクリアしない と社会として認められません。プライベートジェットというのは一般的にセレブの人が乗って 贅沢に使う、というイメージがあり、批判的な目で見られることも。そうした面での課題をき ちっとクリアしていかないと、次のビジネスチャンスは生まれないと考えています」 さらに、「ホンダ自身が元々、『Blue Skies for Our Children』という次世代の子供たち に絶対にきれいな空を残したい、というコンセプトを掲げて事業を展開しています。社会に 対する責任を果たすため、先陣を切って貢献していきたい。小さい機体ながらも業界をリー ドしていける存在でありたい、と考えています」と述べました。 そしてその挑戦は、ホンダの創業者、本田宗一郎氏の「人の移動を空高く飛ばす」夢にもつ ながっているのです。 Gen de Art Dec 2024

The 24th GPHG Awards Celebrate Excellence in Watchmaking The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) returned for its 24th edition, bringing together the world’s most celebrated watchmakers, industry leaders, and enthusiasts for a dazzling evening in Geneva. Hosted by renowned French actress Carole Bouquet, the event paid homage to the unparalleled artistry and innovation that define contemporary horology.

The ceremony, held at Geneva’s iconic Théâtre du Léman, showcased the culmination of months of anticipation, as the GPHG Academy and the 2024 Jury, chaired by horological expert Nick Foulkes, awarded 21 prestigious prizes.

Among the evening’s highlights was the presentation of the esteemed “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix, which represents the pinnacle of watchmaking excellence. A New Spotlight on Women: The Women's Empowerment Section Since its inaugural edition in 1985, TIFF has continuously evolved.

This year marked the launch of the Women’s Empowerment section, dedicated to films by female directors or those highlighting women’s achievements.

“In creating this new section, we sought diverse opinions and engaged in extensive discussions with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, one of our key supporters. The result was the Women’s Empowerment section. In the 1990s, TIFF hosted an International Women’s Film Week , which ended after about a decade. Reviving a similar initiative now holds immense significance. There are many exceptional female directors globally, and we were confident in curating an outstanding lineup,” Ichiyama explained.

He further emphasized TIFF’s commitment to gender parity, highlighting its alignment with the Collectif 50/50 movement. “Three years ago, TIFF signed the Collectif 50/50 pledge. This section reflects our dedication to that cause.” The initiative received an enthusiastic response from female filmmakers, with seven powerful films selected through a rigorous process. “Each of the chosen works is incredibly strong and compelling,” Ichiyama noted.

From October 28 to November 6, 2024, the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), Asia's largest cinematic celebration, unfolded with grandeur. This year, 208 diverse films from Japan and around the world came together to offer audiences transformative cinematic experiences. Since appointing Shozo Ichiyama as Programming Director in 2021, TIFF has embraced significant changes. Ichiyama, renowned for his work with Shochiku and Office Kitano on numerous international projects, has guided TIFF toward becoming a global platform, solidifying its position as a leading film festival in Asia. This article explores Ichiyama’s vision for TIFF, its standout features, and its aspirations for the future.

Elevating Independent Cinema TIFF’s Nippon Cinema Now section focuses on Japanese films with the potential for international recognition.

“Japan boasts an abundance of remarkable independent films, but many only screen in small venues with about 100 seats, making it difficult to achieve commercial success. Despite these challenges, young, talented directors continue to create impressive works on limited budgets. Through TIFF, we provide an opportunity to screen these films at TOHO Cinemas Screen 12, one of Japan’s premier theaters with nearly 500 seats. This exposure can be a tremendous boost for filmmakers,” Ichiyama shared.

Among this year’s selections is Ashes , directed by Yang Liping, a graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts. Created as a graduation project with a two-week shoot and a budget of ¥2 million, the film stood out for its quality. “Such works often lack government funding, but screening them at TIFF could open doors to financial support for future projects. We aim to provide young directors with opportunities to sustain their filmmaking careers,” Ichiyama said.

Encouraging Young Audiences to Embrace Global Cinema “Japan has a loyal audience base for cinema,” Ichiyama noted. However, he expressed concern about the younger generation’s declining interest in foreign films.

“I hope young people will explore foreign cinema, but many primarily watch Japanese films. This may be influenced by cultural factors, with less curiosity about other cultures.

While this trend supports Japan’s film industry, I don’t see it as entirely positive. I want young audiences to develop a broader appreciation for global cultures,” he remarked.

Strengthening Connections with Asia’s Film Industry TIFF goes beyond screenings and competitions, serving as a hub for networking and co-production opportunities in Asia’s film industry. At the heart of this effort is TIFFCOM, a leading multi-content market featuring films, TV shows, and anime, attracting buyers from around the globe.

“This year, we saw significant participation from Asia, especially China. In Japan, young directors often struggle to secure adequate funding, but support from organizations like Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) has opened new avenues. Many Japanese filmmakers are now collaborating with Taiwanese teams, offering extraordinary opportunities to work with their actors and crew,” Ichiyama explained.

Two films supported by TAICCA were screened this year, including Tetsuichiro Tsuta’s Black Ox .

More collaborations are anticipated next year, deepening the ties between Japan and Taiwan’s film industries.

Fostering the Next Generation of Filmmakers As TIFF strengthens its role as a platform for international collaboration within Asia’s film industry, Ichiyama observed a positive trend among emerging filmmakers.

“We’re seeing exceptionally talented directors eager to collaborate with international teams, particularly from China, Korea, and Taiwan. Co-productions within Asia are set to increase. I hope TIFF will continue to serve as a meeting point for creative minds,” he said.

Under Ichiyama’s leadership since 2021, TIFF has reinforced its identity as “Asia’s leading film festival.” As a hub for nurturing talent and fostering international connections, its influence is expected to grow even further in the years to come.

The Kura Master 2024 awards ceremony for Japan's finest sake, authentic shochu, awamori, and umeshu took place on October 2 at the residence of the Japanese Ambassador to France.

This year marked the 8th annual sake competition and the 4th for shochu and awamori. From a total of 1,223 entries, the President’s Award for sake went to “Shirayuki Daiginjo Itami Morohaku” (Konishi Brewery Co., Ltd., Hyogo Prefecture), while the top honor in the shochu and awamori category went to “Araoka Matsufuji” (Matsufuji Inc., Okinawa Prefecture). Additionally, the umeshu competition awarded the Grand Prize to “Umesake 8-nen Jukusei” (Eisen Shuzo Co., Ltd., Fukushima Prefecture) and the "Alliance Gastronomy" award for food pairing to “Tengumai Yamahai Jikomi Junmaishu” (Shata Shuzo Co., Ltd., Ishikawa Prefecture).

The competition is organized by the Kura Master Executive Committee based in Paris. Now in its 8th year, this prestigious award promotes the excellence of Japanese sake culture in France and across Europe, serving as a significant bridge between Japanese sake and French culinary traditions.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR PROMOTING JAPANESE ALCOHOL IN FRANCE AND EUROPE 85

The Kura Master Association, which hosts the competition, was founded in 2017 to promote Japanese sake in the French and European markets. The executive committee is led by Keiichiro Miyagawa, who also runs an import business for Japanese alcoholic beverages and operates a sake school in Paris. The judging panel is chaired by Xavier Thuizat, the head sommelier at the five-star Hôtel de Crillon in Paris and the winner of the 2022 Best Sommelier of France and the 2023 M.O.F. (Meilleur Ouvrier de France) award in the sommelier category. The vice-chairman, Paz Levinson, is the head sommelier at the three-star restaurant "Anne-Sophie Pic," with a record of winning the Best Sommelier of the Americas and placing fourth in the Best Sommelier of the World. Together, these top sommeliers are showcasing the appeal of Japanese alcohol to a global audience.

Thuizat mentioned, "I occasionally give lectures on sake to fellow sommeliers, students aspiring to be sommeliers, and professionals in the food and beverage industry to help them discover the wonderful qualities of sake." The Kura Master Association also organizes annual study trips to Japan to deepen the judges' knowledge of sake. The growing significance of sake in French culinary culture inspires a desire to learn more and propose food pairings.

The judging panel for "Kura Master 2024" included some of France’s and Europe’s finest sommeliers, bartenders, wine cellar managers, and professionals from prestigious restaurants and culinary schools, including holders of the esteemed M.O.F. title. Following the rigorous blind-tasting method used in top wine competitions, each sake, shochu, awamori, and umeshu entry was assessed and rated on a 100-point scale.

Each category had strict scoring criteria: entries scoring between 100 and 93 points received the coveted Platinum award, while those scoring between 92 and 80 points were awarded Gold. Among the Platinum winners, the Judging President chose one top entry per category for the President’s Prize, and the jury awarded the Judges’ Prize in each division. The inaugural Kura Master President’s Prize went to The inaugural Kura Master President’s Prize went to “Shichida junmaiginjo Omachi 50” (Tenzan Sake Brewery Co., Ltd., Saga Prefecture), which has continued to win accolades for its craftsmanship, drawing admirers worldwide.

As in previous years, breweries proudly entered their most exceptional products. This year’s competition featured over 1,223 entries across six sake categories, including junmai, daiginjo, and junmai daiginjo, with 134 achieving Platinum and 269 earning Gold. The shochu and awamori categories, representing eight distinct types such as potato and brown sugar, had 197 entries, with 21 receiving Platinum and 44 Gold awards. The umeshu category saw 80 entries, with 7 Platinum and 19 Gold winners.

This year’s judging also emphasized the importance of preserving Japan’s traditional brewing techniques.

UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage registration efforts are advancing, recognizing Japan’s sake brewing heritage and supporting the global appreciation and growth of this cultural legacy.

Regarding the President’s Award-winning “Shirayuki Daiginjo Itami Morohaku,” Thuizat stated, "It harmonizes multiple elements beautifully and will pair wonderfully with many dishes, much like a chameleon." On the other hand, Christophe Davoine, who awarded the President’s Prize for “Araoka Matsufuji” in the shochu and awamori category, praised it as "a great example of the diversity of spirits. You can enjoy various flavors, including umami, wood notes, and mushroom aromas. It’s truly outstanding."

One of the standout dishes we serve is Beef Bourguignon. This classic French dish is a true representation of my father's philosophy, where the focus is on enhancing the natural flavors of the ingredients rather than complicating them. We prepare it using high-quality beef, slowcooked in a rich red wine sauce, infused with aromatic herbs and vegetables. Instead of traditional thickeners like butter and cream, we create a vegetable puree that not only enriches the sauce but also adds a modern twist, making it more digestible. This approach exemplifies the essence of French cooking—maximizing the taste of each element while ensuring balance and refinement.

Another dish that I cherish is Oeufs en Meurette, or poached eggs in red wine sauce. It is a classic dish that we’ve modernized while honoring my father's original recipe. The key to this dish lies in its simplicity—perfectly poached eggs served in a luscious sauce made from red wine, shallots, and a touch of vinegar. To elevate it, instead of simply caramelizing the onions, we create a light and airy onion mousse using a siphon, which adds a new layer of texture and flavor to the dish. One key lesson was the Japanese technique of using a knife, which emphasizes fluidity and control. In France, there's often a push for speed, while in Japan, the focus is on precision and mindfulness in every action. This perspective has influenced my approach to cooking, teaching me to slow down and take the time to perfect every dish. The culture surrounding work in Japan is different as well; there’s a strong emphasis on commitment and teamwork, which I’ve tried to integrate into our restaurant’s ethos in Tokyo.

Can you share your experiences and insights from working in Japan?

My year at Aoyagi restaurant in Minoto-ku was transformative. It was an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the intricacies of kaiseki cuisine, which emphasizes harmony, simplicity, and respect for seasonal ingredients. I found many parallels between French and Japanese culinary traditions, especially in our mutual appreciation for quality. The concept of 'umami' in Japanese cuisine resonated with me, as it aligns with the French notion of depth in flavor.

À Kyoto, dans le quartier de Higashiyama, un chemin escarpé mène, depuis la station de métro Keage, à un bâtiment ouvert combinant béton et verre, niché sur une montagne luxuriante. Entourée par une nature belle et tranquille et surplombant le paysage urbain de Kyoto, la Villa Kujoyama est une résidence d’artistes prestigieuse, qui a célébré en 2022 ses 30 ans d’existence.

Located in Kyoto, Higashiyama, a steep climb from Keage Station leads to an open building combining concrete and glass nestled halfway up a lush mountain. A FRANCO-JAPANESE ARTISTIC RESEARCH VENUE IN THE ANCIENT CITY OF KYOTO Les résidences d’artistes, qui bénéficient aujourd’hui d’une attention accrue au Japon, permettent à des créateurs de séjourner dans un pays ou une région étrangère pendant une certaine période afin de se consacrer à la recherche, à la création et à la diffusion de leurs travaux. Au Japon, ces programmes sont souvent gérés par les collectivités locales, dans le cadre d’initiatives de promotion régionale et d’échanges internationaux. La Villa Kujoyama est à quant à elle gérée par l’Institut français, organisme dépendant du gouvernement français, et est aujourd’hui une antenne de l’Institut français du Japon, impliqué dans la diffusion de la culture et de la langue françaises dans l’archipel nippon.

Les origines de la Villa Kujoyama remontent à 1927 avec la création de l'"Institut franco-japonais du Kansai", sous l’impulsion de la Société de rapprochement intellectuel franco-japonais. L'Institut déménage en 1936 près de l'Université de Kyoto, laissant le bâtiment sur Kujoyama inutilisé. Cinquante ans plus tard, en 1986, le ministère français des Affaires étrangères initie un projet de construction d'un établissement destiné à accueillir des artistes et des chercheurs, aboutissant à l'inauguration de la Villa Kujoyama en 1992. Conçu par l'architecte Kunio Kato, le bâtiment est parfaitement adapté à la recherche artistique franco-japonaise, et son architecture suggère un mariage raffiné des deux cultures.

Artist-in-residence programs, nowadays getting more and more attention in Japan, allow artists to stay in a foreign country or region for a certain period to engage in research, creation, and presentation of their works. In Japan, these programs are often managed by local governments as part of regional promotion and international exchange initiatives. Villa Kujoyama however is managed by Institut français, an organization affiliated with the French government, and is today a branch of Institut français du Japon, involved in the promotion of French culture and language in the Japanese archipelago.

The origins of Villa Kujoyama trace back to 1927, with the creation of the "Institut franco-japonais du Kansai", driven by the Société de rapprochement intellectuel franco-japonais (Society for Franco-Japanese Intellectual Exchanges). The Institute later moved near Kyoto University, leaving the building on Kujoyama intact. Fifty years later, in 1986, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated a construction project for a facility to host artists and researchers, leading to the inauguration of Villa Kujoyama in 1992. Designed by architect Kunio Kato, the building is suited for Franco-Japanese artistic research, and its architecture suggests a refined marriage of both cultures.

古都・京都に建つ日仏の芸術研究の場 近年、日本でも注目を集めている「アーティスト・イン・レジデンス」。 アーティストが異なる文化を持つ国や地域に一定期間滞在し、リサー チや制作、発表などを行うプログラムのこと。日本では、地域振興や 国際交流を兼ねて地方自治体で運営するケースが多くみられます。一 方、ヴィラ九条山は、フランス政府に従属する組織であるアンスティ チュ・フランセパリ本部によって運営されており、現在は日本におけ るフランス文化・言語の普及に携わるアンスティチュ・フランセの支 部として活動しています。 ヴィラ九条山の原点は、1927 年「関西地方にフランスと日本の文化会 館を」と設立された「関西日仏学館」まで遡ります。1936 年に関西日 仏学館はその後京都大学近くに移転し、九条山の建物は残されたまま になっていました。そして 1986 年、フランス外務省がアーティスト や研究者などレジデントを受け入れる施設の建設プロジェクトを推進 し、1992 年にヴィラ九条山として新たに開館したのです。建築家・加 藤邦男氏の設計は、日本とフランスの文化の優美なマリアージュをも たらす日仏芸術研究の場にふさわしい建物となりました。

Since its establishment, Villa Kujoyama has hosted over 400 artists who came to nourish their practice through a dialogue with Japanese culture. Residencies range from four to six months, encompassing a diverse array of fields including visual arts, architecture, photography, theatre, film, art criticism and curation, dance, music, literature, culinary art, video games and more, welcoming about 15 residents annually.

In 2014, after eighteen months of renovation works, Villa Kujoyama reopened its doors and developed its residency program through two initiatives. First, with the support of its main patron, the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, the introduction of the "métiers d'art" (crafts) discipline into the residency program is designed to encourage dialogue between all disciplines and traditional Japanese crafts. In addition, the opening of the "Duo" program enables artists based in France and Japanese artists to apply together for a project. Through this program, renowned Japanese contemporary artist Kohei Nawa and choreographer Damien Jalet spent together a three-month residency in 2015, collaborating for the creation of a dance piece.

Depuis sa création, la Villa Kujoyama a accueilli plus de 400 artistes venant nourrir leur pratique au contact de la culture japonaise. Les résidences varient de quatre à six mois et englobent un large éventail de domaines, notamment les arts plastiques, l'architecture, la photographie, le théâtre, le cinéma, la critique d'art et le commissariat d’exposition, la danse, la musique, la littérature, l’art culinaire ou encore les jeux vidéo. Une quinzaine de lauréats et lauréates sont accueillis en résidence chaque année à la Villa Kujoyama.

En 2014, après dix-huit mois de travaux de rénovation, la Villa Kujoyama rouvre ses portes et élargit son programme de résidences à travers deux initiatives. D’une part, sous l'impulsion de son mécène principal la Fondation Bettencourt Schueller, l’accueil de représentants de la discipline « métiers d’art » vise à favoriser le dialogue entre l’ensemble des disciplines et les métiers d’art traditionnels japonais. D’autre part, l’ouverture du programme « Duo » permet à des artistes basés en France et des artistes japonais de candidater ensemble pour un projet. C’est dans le cadre de ce programme que l'artiste contemporain japonais renommé Kohei Nawa et le chorégraphe Damien Jalet sont restés en résidence trois mois en 2015, collaborant ensemble sur une pièce de danse.

ヴィラ九条山は設立以来、日本にインスピレーションを求めてやってきた 400 名以上のアーティスト をレジデントとして迎え入れてきました。レジデントの滞在期間は４か月から６か月。造形、建築、 写真、演劇、映画、美術評論や展覧会企画、ダンス、音楽、文学、料理研究、ビデオゲームなど分野 はとても多彩。毎年 15 名ほどを受け入れています。 2014 年には、１年間半かけて建物を改修しリニューアルオープン。時代を見据えた新たなプログラ ムも打ち出されました。主要メセナのベタンクールシュエーラー財団の支援により、ひとつは「工芸 部門」の受け入れ。分野にわたって日本の伝統工芸との対話を促し、培っていくことを目的としてい ます。また、フランス人あるいはフランスを拠点に活動しているアーティストと日本人アーティスト の共同プロジェクト「ヴィラ九条山デュオ」も開始。2015 年には日本現代アートの第一人者・名和 晃平氏と振付師ダミアン・ジャレ氏がこのプログラムで３か月滞在し、コラボレーションをしながら 舞踏作品を作り上げました。 Gen de Art Dec 2024

Directrice de l’institution depuis septembre 2022, Adèle Fremolle revient sur les changements survenus au cours des 30 dernières années. « Initialement, l'objectif principal de notre établissement était de permettre aux résidents de se concentrer sur leurs recherches dans un environnement calme, loin de la vie quotidienne. Aujourd'hui, il se positionne comme une résidence de recherche où les artistes peuvent interagir avec les locaux et s'inspirer d’une autre culture tout en créant leurs œuvres, » déclare-t-elle. Pour promouvoir les échanges entre les résidents et la communauté locale, la Villa Kujoyama est ouverte tous les premiers jeudis du mois de 14h à 21h, offrant l’opportunité aux lauréats de « présenter leurs travaux en cours sous des formes variées (performances, conférences, présentations de recherche) et d’interagir avec le public pour apprendre et expérimenter la culture japonaise, et découvrir ainsi de nouvelles façons de voir le monde ». Une résidence à la Villa Kujoyama vise véritablement à une connexion avec la communauté locale.

Ainsi, lors du premier jeudi de mars, l'artiste de performance Tsirihaka Harrivel, dont la recherche porte sur les origines martiales du cirque, a invité le maître de kyudo Kiyoshi Yamaguchi, accompagné par le harpiste Tomoyuki Asakawa, à donner une performance unique de tir à l'arc japonais.

開かれたレジデンスへ

As the director of the institution since September 2022, Adèle Fremolle reflects on the changes that happened over the past 30 years. "Initially, the main purpose of our establishment was to allow residents to focus on their research in a quiet environment, away from everyday life. Today, it positions itself as a research residency where artists can interact with locals and gain inspiration from foreign cultures while creating their works," she says. To promote interaction between residents and the local community, Villa Kujoyama is open to the public every first Thursday of the month from 2 pm to 9 pm, offering residents the opportunity to "showcase their ongoing work through various forms (performances, conferences, research presentations) and interact with visitors in order to learn and experience Japanese culture, thereby discovering new ways of seeing the world." Hence, a residency at Villa Kujoyama aims to connect with the local community.

For instance, on the first Thursday of March, performance artist Tsirihaka Harrivel, whose research focuses on the martial origins of circus, invited kyudo master Kiyoshi Yamaguchi, accompanied by harpist Tomoyuki Asakawa, to give a unique Japanese archery performance.

例えば 3 月の一般公開では、サーカスとその起源とされる武術の関連 をリサーチしているパフォーマンス・アーティストのツィリアカ・ア リヴェール氏が、弓道の師範の山口喜由氏を招き、朝川朋之氏による ハープの演奏に合わせて弓を引くパフォーマンスを演出しました。

「開館当初は、日常と離れた静かな環境でリサーチを行うことが当施 設の主な目的でした。現在は、アーティストとして異国文化に触れ、 地元の人と交流することでインスピレーションを得ながら作品を制作 する調査研究のレジデンスという位置づけです」。 フレモル氏は、レジデントと地域社会との交流を促すため毎月第一 木曜日に施設の一般公開を始めました。「パフォーマンスやリサー チの発表、講演会など、様々な形でリサーチの課程を発表したり人々 と交流することで、日本の文化を学び経験し、新しい世界の在り方 を学ぶことができる」。地域社会とつながるレジデンスを目指して いるのです。

Les lauréats n’ont pas d’obligation de production durant leur séjour. Avec le soutien de l’équipe de la Villa Kujoyama, ils sont invités à établir des relations avec les acteurs du monde artistique, universitaire et économique pendant leur résidence, et concrétiser leurs recherches une fois rentrés chez eux. Par exemple, le concepteur de jeux vidéos Christophe Galati a produit un nouveau jeu sur la base de recherches et développements de concepts conduits lors de sa résidence en 2019. La Villa Kujoyama se positionne comme un lieu idéal pour formuler des idées créatives et cultiver des relations avec différents collaborateurs.

Pendant les cinq ans qui suivent la fin de leur résidence, les lauréats continuent de bénéficier d’un accompagnement en France et au Japon grâce au soutien de différentes institutions telles que l'Ambassade de France au Japon, l'Institut français, la Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris, et l’ensemble du réseau de partenaires de la Villa Kujoyama, composé d’universités, de structures culturelles et de créateurs. En 2022, en collaboration avec le Kanazawa College of Art et la Fondation de l’entreprise Mitani Sangyo Co., Ltd., la Villa Kujoyama a lancé le programme "Artist in Kanazawa Machiya". Dans ce cadre, les lauréats peuvent prolonger leur séjour au Japon dans une machiya traditionnelle de Kanazawa pendant environ un mois, et interagir avec les étudiants et la communauté locale, tout en découvrant l'artisanat traditionnel et l'art contemporain de Kanazawa.

Située à Kyoto, ville d’art et de culture, la Villa Kujoyama nourrit la recherche et la créativité des artistes au milieu d'une nature luxuriante. Espace ouvert où des artistes de multiples disciplines des deux pays s’influencent mutuellement, permettant la rencontre entre deux cultures, elle est un lieu de résidence déterminant pour les artistes et leurs recherches, et la concrétisation des échanges artistiques franco-japonais.

Residents are not required to produce results during their stay. With the support of Villa Kujoyama staff, they are encouraged to build relationships with the Japanese art, academic, and business communities during their stay and develop ideas into projects upon returning home. For instance, game designer Christophe Galati launched a new game based on research and concept development carried out during his residency in 2019. Villa Kujoyama is the ideal place to formulate creative ideas and cultivate relationships with various collaborators.

During the five years following the end of their residency, residents continue to benefit from support in both France and Japan, thanks to various institutions such as the French Embassy in Japan, Institut français, the Maison de la Culture du Japon (Japanese Cultural Center) in Paris, and Villa Kujoyama's broad network of partners, that includes universities, cultural institutions and creators.

In 2022, in collaboration with the Kanazawa College of Art and Mitani Sangyo Co., Ltd. Foundation, Villa Kujoyama initiated a new residency program called "Artist in Kanazawa Machiya". Through this initiative, residents can stay in a traditional machiya in Kanazawa for about a month, and interact with students and locals while experiencing both the contemporary art scene and traditional crafts of Kanazawa.

Situated in Kyoto, a city with a rich cultural background, Villa Kujoyama nurtures the research and creativity of artists amid lush nature. As an open space where artists from multiple disciplines from both countries influence each other, enabling two cultures to meet, it is a key place for artists and their research, and the concrete expression of Franco-Japanese artistic exchanges.
