As the Paris Olympics 2024 are fast approaching, the Executive Director of the Olympic Games Christophe Dubi emphasises the event’s inclusivity and consistent push for international unity.

Known as the most anticipated sports competition of the year, the Summer Olympics in Paris are expected to attract athletes and visitors from all over the world to the capital of France this year.

Beyond being the biggest sporting event of the time, the Games are likely to create a lasting legacy for Paris, showcasing the city’s iconic landmarks as venues for the events, as well as sharing the beauty of French culture with all who arrive to watch the competition. With accessibility as a guiding principle, Paris Olympics will welcome visitors to many spectacular events, while fostering an atmosphere of generosity, openness and cooperation.

As Christophe Dubi says in his interview, the approaching Paris Olympics will come to embody a celebration of human achievement, cultural exchange, as well as resilience in the face of modern challenges.

GLOBAL UNITY AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE In the coming Olympic Games that will take place in the French capital from 26th July to 11th August, there are two important missions to achieve, Christophe Dubi says. “One is to leave a long-lasting legacy for the hosts. But there is also the willingness to gather the whole community”, – he explains. “And when I say the whole community, it means every National Olympic Committee throughout the globe without discrimination of any kind.”

The spirit of acceptance and tolerance has historically surrounded the Games, growing a little more from each event to another – and the shift will be also evident yet again in the Paris Olympics in comparison to the previous Tokyo Games.

“You need to have that generosity to go beyond any of the tensions, over any political views, any partisan views,” – Dubi says,

adding that the coming Olympics in France will likely break a record in terms of the numbers of heads of states, as well as many international sports stars, all coming to Paris for the event.

One of the most important pillars of the Games is traditionally the opening ceremony.

France aims for the new heights in its planning of the spectacular start of the Games. For the first time in history, it will not be hosting it in a stadium but will be held on

the Seine, the river crossing the heart of the city. The ceremony will be accessible to view for free for hundreds of thousands of visitors who will be watching it from the banks of Seine and nearby buildings, while those who wish to see the ceremony up-close can purchase a ticket to the lower quays along the river. “If you don’t have a ticket, you can still be part of the action without having to pay a single penny,” – Dubi says.

In addition to all the new features, accessibility is the major focus of the committee this year. “I think by design these Games were generous to start with, since France offers what is probably one of the most magnificent cities around the globe”, – the director states. In Paris, the Olympic competitions will take place all over the city, so that the visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of the games while appreciating the iconic Parisian landscape.

“Why not use Place de la Concorde for urban sports? Why not use Les Invalides with this amazing backdrop for archery?

Let’s make the Seine much cleaner so that we can swim in the Seine. Let’s renovate the Grand Palais so that we can have fencing and tight windows. Let’s use the Eiffel Tower as the backdrop for beach volleyball”, – Dubi continues. “Everybody will want to be in Paris. This is really outstanding”.

ENERGY OF THE GAMES Preparations for the event of such scale require a joint effort of a large team of professionals and state authorities to achieve the highest possible level of organisation and welcome visitors from all around the world. These efforts include support from public authorities, security bodies, transportation, energy, telecommunications and various other actors.

However, for Dubi, this is also about building the right infrastructure that could advance the image of the city further in the international arena, as well as improve the overall quality of life for Parisians themselves.

“If you want a long-lasting legacy, you need to team up from the very beginning with those that will continue these programs afterwards, so you have to consider that the Games are a formidable platform and accelerator, a catalyst”, – he says. “It creates such energy that many of the programs that you desire to launch, like cleaning the Seine, would not have happened without the Games.”

The new infrastructure for the Olympics is also likely to create thousands of new jobs as a new boost to the French economy from hard skill sectors such as construction for “people that were somewhat disenfranchised to be part of the workforce”, as well as many soft-skills-based positions. “I think that this French art de vivre, the French creativity, talent, innovation in art, in fashion, in entertainment will be boosted even further”, – Dubi concludes.

PARIS OLYMPICS AND TECHNOLOGY パリ・オリンピックとテクノロジー

“The games always display the ultimate in everything including in technology”, – says Christophe Dubi, when asked about the innovative technological applications at the Summer Olympics this year.

In his view, the main technological innovations are rooted in the desire to deliver the best experience to the audience, including both the visitors coming to Paris and those watching the Games from the comfort of their own home, serving as an important boost for the development of top-quality broadcasting technologies.

Further, according to Dubi, the use of artificial intelligence will expand to “a number of areas, something that will be more prevalent in games organisation in the future”, reflecting the highly technological aspect of the event through history.

He adds that other ambitious tools will be used to organise transportation: “For the first time in Paris, you will have all transportation modes available for any customer in one app… So, yes, we will see many firsts in the context of the Paris Olympics.”

Finally, the questions of security can never be overlooked when considering an event of such scale. Extraordinary pieces from the Patek Philippe collection The director and curator of the Patek Philippe Museum, Dr. Peter Friess, has been responsible for the incredible expansion of its collection, helping the museum achieve the status of one of the most extensive exhibits of luxury watches in the world.

Friess took over his post at the museum in 2012, and he has long established a reputation in the world of watches as an expert in art history, educator, inventor as well as master watchmaker himself. He has undertaken the work to document the Patek Philippe collection in two impressive volumes – The Quest for the Perfect Watch (Patek Philippe Collection) and The Emergence of the Watch (Antique Collection).

Friess introduces some of the most remarkable watches from the museum’s collection, emphasizing that “their beauty comes from within – that is, everything that is invisible to the viewer”. This Patek Philippe pocket watch has such a gorgeous movement that it needs no standard case to enhance its beauty, only glass on the front and back to protect it from dust and to stop the temptation to touch it with your fingers. Unnecessary parts have been completely eliminated, resulting in a watch where all the moving parts are visible from both front and back. Hidden within the Art-Deco-inspired case of this Patek Philippe specimen, reference 3834, are all the standard parts of a movement, plus its most important feature – the Tourbillon, an escapement to guarantee ultimate precision. As we peel away the layers of the piece photographically, its intrinsic beauty is revealed to us. Before the invention of computer-aided design, Tourbillons could only be made by a small group of very gifted watchmakers.

The ticking sound of the watch emanates from the centre of the heart-shaped platine. The steady motion of its wheels is a microcosm of the rotating sky. This timepiece was owned by James Ward Packard, the American industrialist who founded the Packard Motor Car Company.

During the last 10 years of his career the watchmaker devoted himself to working on some of the very best PATEK PHILIPPE WATCHES

How did you decide to become a watchmaker?

Actually, I became a watchmaker quite by accident. Originally, I wanted to be a specialist in electronics, which, in 1975, was seen as the cutting edge of technology. In order to enter technical school, I was asked to obtain basic training in watchmaking. After one year I knew my future was in the “past.“ That is, I continued with watch making school, but focused not on electronic but on mechanical watches, which I have devoted my life to ever since. I made this choice even though at the time the common sense was that mechanical watchmaking was in danger of extinction. From today’s perspective, I made a perfect decision. Mechanical watches are currently in high demand and the world needs more watchmakers like me—able to work on 500 year-old as well as modern watches.

Can you describe your current role at the Patek Philippe Museum?

I prepare the watches for survival over the next 1000 years. That means, if necessary, restoring the movements and protecting them from corrosion.

In collaboration with the curator, I help describe the mechanisms for various publications. In the last few years, I have taken watches apart for the photographers who create incredibly detailed images for the museum’s catalogs and archives. I confess, it is a bit heart-breaking, but also gratifying, to have to restore watches that I made with my own hands in a previous phase of my life. I feel like I‘m meeting myself, a sign of age?--perhaps even wisdom?

Throughout your career, what has been the most challenging piece you've worked on, and why was it particularly difficult?

In general the more difficult the better it is. I accept every challenge and greatly enjoy going back into history, studying documents and books in order to bring every watch with all its complications back to life. Some of the most interesting pieces I worked on are pocket watches with many functions or complications. It is always tricky to fine tune a mechanism, so that the spring providing the power gives the mechanism the force it needs to make all the parts work seamlessly together.

How have technological advancements in watchmaking affected your work?

For my daily work I mostly use the same tools my predecessors used over the past 500 years. Over time, of course, the tools have changed, so I always have to have an overview of the evolution of watchmaking technology. The tool which has made the biggest difference for me is the digital camera. It allows me to make instant images documenting the process of restoration. When working on very complex watches, I use the photos to help me capture all the details of a mechanism, which I may need later, not only for putting the watch back together, but also to better understand the design of the mechanism. For watchmakers who follow me in the future, the digital photos are a tremendous resource for understanding complex timepieces.

Watches and Wonders Geneva: The 2024 edition The latest Watches and Wonders Geneva concluded on April 15, 2024, once again setting new records in the numbers of attendees, exhibited brands and media representatives. Thus, according to Humair, this year’s exhibition welcomed 49,000 visitors from all over the world at the Salon.

“We work all year long closely with all the watchmaking maisons to meet their expectations, from key players to smaller independent brands. We have developed strong and long-term collaborations with our suppliers and local partners,” – he explains. “Our wish is to make watchmaking accessible to anyone and create new passions and vocations for our industry.”

This year’s exhibition showcased some of the most anticipated new pieces by the biggest names in the world of watchmaking, including the new GMT-Master II watch by Rolex, latest luxury pieces by Chopard and Hermes, as well as the innovative technological achievements of the industry, such as the SpaceOne Tellurium watch.

Humair also adds that the recent Watches and Wonders Geneva was developed with special attention to interactive features for the public in order “to offer unforgettable and immersive experiences”. For him, a closer connection with the latest technologies are crucial for the watchmaking world, given the evergrowing role of the digital realm in customer experience and luxury brand marketing. “Interactions and physical gatherings remain essential but with Watches and Wonders, wherever you are, you can experience the Geneva watchmaking moment!” – he says.

When asked about the impact of the event for the public, the city of Geneva and the country as a whole, Humair mentions that the scale of Watches and Wonders can be considered unprecedented for the event of its kind.

Humair adds that the global reach of the events is also growing larger every year, estimated at around 700 million people around the globe.

During the event, Geneva becames the center of the watchmaking world, attracting people from as many as 125 countries around the globe and bringing together thousands of watch lovers and watch specialists to marvel at the latest inventions of the industry.

Some of Picon’s seminal works include French Architects and Engineers in the Age of Enlightenment (1988), Digital Culture in Architecture: An Introduction for the Design Profession (2010), Ornament: The Politics of Architecture and Subjectivity (2013), Smart Cities: A Spatialised Intelligence (2015), and The Materiality of Architecture (2021). In these books, the scholar delves into the “deep structures” of architectural evolution, discussing the complex interconnections between disciplines including architecture, design, and engineering.

The achievements of his academic career have been recognised with multiple awards for writing, including the Medaille de la Ville de Paris and the Prix du Livre d'Architecture de la ville de Briey. He is also the Chairman of Fondation Le Corbusier, the organisation that manages all the properties and artworks left from one of the most influential architects in modern history and promotes his heritage to the public.

Professor Antoine Picon shares his insights into the evolving landscape of architecture, the intrinsic meanings embedded within its structures, and reflects on his own journey with the focus on his role as chairman at Foundation Le Corbusier.

NEW WAVES IN ARCHITECTURE The professor goes on to point out that, in addition to the existing impact of the digital, there are two other major trends in contemporary architectural development, the first one of which is artificial intelligence. “Are we going to design differently in the age of AI? I think this is one of the questions.

And what does AI tell us about design?”, – he wonders. “And then, the other big question is about the environment and climate change.”

Architecture In Motion Contextualising architectural practices, Picon believes that the introduction of digital technologies served as a turning point to set the new direction for architecture in the modern days. “I think digital is reshaping architecture a lot… It has changed the forms that architects could produce before the invention of the computer, and the geometry used to be much more limited than it is now”, – he explains. Picon also adds that the digital technologies clearly transformed the way architects approach scale and tectonics, among other key elements to construction.

To him, the new technologies ultimately change the very foundation of the discipline of architecture, because it transforms the way humans interact with the world and how it alters their perception of space.

“I think, overall, we should design differently with different principles, because digital has also changed what the human is about. I think digital is a cultural revolution, and architecture is ultimately about the human. These two movements shape how the decisions are made and what purposes architecture can serve in this new reality, while posing many new questions to previous approaches. “I think the first thing is to say that we are in a period of transition, and we don’t know yet completely how we’ll design, how it will be organised and practiced tomorrow,” – Picon argues.

“On the one hand, we need to be more aware of politics, of questions that matter today. Design can no longer be an isolated sphere,” – Picon says. “But, on the other hand, we need to keep in mind that what you do is actually centered on the kind of skills that you have acquired. An architect is somebody who knows what to do with space – and that is a very unique quality.”

With architecture and design gradually becoming more holistic fields of expertise, no longer so far removed from the cultural and political shifts, Picon argues that today’s architects should be more open to the world and strive to gain an in-depth understanding of various current affairs, including political challenges and climate change.

“I think architecture’s ultimate purpose is making spaces in which people have the impression that their life has a meaning. It is about creating spaces in which humans have the impression to be the actors of their life,” – he concludes.

Fondation Le Corbusier

As the chairman at Fondation Le Corbusier, Picon also believes that it is important to preserve the history of architecture for future generations to learn from. “Our mission is pretty simple. It is to promote Le Corbusier’s contribution to architecture and urbanism, but also to generally encourage more critical thinking about cities and people”.

At the foundation, as Picon explains, the key task is to generate discussion on what was the true impact of Le Corbusier to the ways in which architecture is developed today. The teams at the foundation take part in organising exhibitions dedicated to the work of the architect, as well to publish or support the publication of books about his life and career.

“You know, Le Corbusier made mistakes. He was human, like everyone, but he was one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. Without him, you really cannot understand modernity”, – Picon says.

In the future, the ambition is to create a much larger project – a museum focused on Le Corbusier’s work where people from all over the world can learn more about him.

Nestled in the scenic Chongli District of Zhangjiakou, at the juncture of the Taihang and Yan Mountains, the Genting Resort Secret Garden emerges as a premier all-season destination. Just a short distance from Beijing, this resort is celebrated for its excellent natural snow, pristine mountain air, and vivid skies. Developed through a visionary investment of over 18 billion RMB by Datuk Lim Chee Wah of VXL Group and Tan Siri Lim Kok Thay of Genting Group, the resort's ambition covers 100 square kilometers. Upon completion, it plans to feature 88 ski slopes across 70 kilometers and 22 advanced European lifts over 30 kilometers, aiming to accommodate 1.8 million visitors annually.

GENTING RESORT SECRET GARDEN When you founded the Genting Resort Secret Garden, had you already contemplated the possibility of bidding for the Winter Olympics in the future? How did this concept originate?

In 1996, I experienced skiing in Chongli with friends. At that time, Chongli was a less developed, remote county with basic infrastructure. Despite the challenging conditions and rudimentary skiing facilities, we noticed a significant number of enthusiasts from Beijing making the journey. This observation sparked my interest in developing ski resorts in Chongli. As a businessman with a passion for skiing, recognizing the market potential was crucial. Successful business ventures require thorough market analysis to ensure profitability. My first visit to Chongli’s inaugural ski resort in 1996 highlighted its simplicity and the absence of advanced infrastructure.

Nevertheless, the enthusiasm of visitors from Beijing, attracted to Chongli’s proximity to the capital, inspired me. The subsequent improvement in transportation, including high-speed trains and highways, enhanced Chongli's accessibility. Consequently, after years of monitoring the area's annual snowfall, I secured a contract with the Hebei Provincial Government in 2007 to develop the ski resort. The establishment of Genting Resort Secret Garden was primarily aimed at offering a premier destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Initially, the notion of bidding for the Winter Olympics was not our main focus. However, as the resort flourished and our team's capabilities became evident, pursuing the Winter Olympics emerged as a logical step forward. It offered an opportunity to elevate our resort’s international profile and contribute to the legacy of winter sports in the area.

This transformation has not only showcased China’s strength in winter sports but also spurred investment and interest in this field.

The availability of Olympic-caliber venues has attracted top athletes and international competitions, enhancing grassroots involvement. These venues now serve multiple purposes, including training, hosting competitions, and offering recreational activities, thus nurturing a widespread winter sports culture throughout the nation.

Furthermore, the legacy of hosting the Winter Olympics has benefits that extend well beyond the event itself. It has a profound effect on local economies, infrastructure, and tourism. Looking beyond the Winter Olympics, we envision and plan for a comprehensive legacy. Inspired by former Winter Olympics hosts like Switzerland, we aim to expand into sectors such as healthcare, wellness, and elderly care, capitalizing on our strategic location near Beijing, accessible via a one-hour high-speed train and a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Miyun Yunding Pleasure Park.

We are also focusing on developing sports and cultural tourism platforms and integrating educational value into our initiatives. Believing in the rich cultural heritage of China, we are dedicated to imparting this legacy to future generations. Education is key, and we look to countries like Switzerland, known for their boarding schools and vocational training, as models to emulate and innovate upon in Chongli.

Upon our arrival, Chongli was economically disadvantaged. Our mission is to not only boost its prosperity but also to elevate it to international prominence.

My international background and experience endowed the team with an enhanced understanding of global standards, best practices, and the expectations of stakeholders in the winter sports and Olympic bidding sectors.

A pivotal aspect of my contribution was improving cross-cultural communication and cooperation within the team. My capability to bridge cultural differences and facilitate effective dialogue between Chinese and international parties fostered trust and rapport, crucial elements for the bid's success.

Moreover, my experience in managing international networks and relationships was critical in advocating Beijing's candidacy on the world stage. Leveraging my contacts and knowledge, I effectively showcased Beijing's advantages and addressed any concerns from international stakeholders, thus improving the city's reputation and competitive edge as a potential Winter Olympics host.

This strategy includes investing in the expansion and modernization of ski resort infrastructure, which aims to enhance the overall skiing experience and draw a larger audience, including those from abroad. In addition to infrastructure development, there is a focus on launching extensive training and education programs. These programs are designed to build a skilled workforce within the skiing sector, ensuring that service and safety standards are second to none.

Moreover, the strategy encompasses initiating promotional campaigns to boost awareness and generate excitement for winter sports throughout China. Communicating the INVISIBLE through MIWA KOMATSU's Eyes 祈りと死生観 目に見えないものを観る者に伝える小松美羽

The canvas bursts with vibrant colors and bizarre creatures that seem to almost spill out of the frame.

Each creature stares out with large, glaring eyes. Though they might appear grotesque at first glance, there is a warmth to them that captivates and draws in the viewer.

"Just as anyone can recognize a Picasso, anyone can recognize a Komatsu," people say about Miwa Komatsu's work. Komatsu first came into the media spotlight around 2009 and has garnered considerable attention since. Later, she began to create unique, one-of-a-kind paintings, leading to a bold and vivid touch. Her works have been consecrated at Izumo Grand Shrine in 2014, collected by the British Museum in 2015, and have fetched high prices at international auction houses, quickly elevating her acclaim. 極彩色の画面に、はみ出さんばかりに描かれた異形のものたち。どれも目が大きく見開かれ、こ ちらを睨みつけるようです。一見グロテスクにも見えますが、どこか温かみも感じられ、観るも のを惹きつける不思議な絵です。 「ピカソは誰が見てもピカソであるように、小松は誰が見ても小松だ」。小松美羽氏の作品はこ う評されます。小松氏は 2009 年頃からメディアに取り上げられ、注目を集めます。その後は一 点モノの作品を描きたいと絵画を手掛け、大胆で鮮やかなタッチが生まれました。作品は、2014 年に出雲大社に奉納、2015 年には大英博物館にコレクションされ、世界的オークションハウスで 高額落札されるなどその評価は急激に高まりました。

Divine Spirits The Symbol of Life and Death Where does the appeal of Miwa Komatsu, an artist who has drawn international attention with her unique expressions, originate? Growing up in the nature-surrounded mountains of Nagano, Komatsu has been drawing since she was very young and was determined to become an artist, a dream she believed in from her childhood. Many of her works are inspired by her childhood experiences. For example, the mountain dogs that frequently appear in her work are based on a mystical experience when she got lost in the woods and a dog seemingly appeared from nowhere and guided her home.

Komatsu depicts Divine Spirits , which are symbols of her views on life and death. She has also experienced the moment a soul leaves a body when she was present at the death of her pets and felt the same when her beloved grandfather passed away. She realized that "life and death are equal for both humans and animals." Believing that the purity of the soul is questioned when the physical body is abandoned, Komatsu expresses the world of the soul through her Divine Spirits . She aims to portray the unseen world of the soul in her art and communicate this to viewers.

独自の表現を追求し、国内外で注目を集める小松美羽氏の魅力はどこからきたものでしょうか。小 松氏は山々に囲まれ自然豊かな長野で育ちました。物心つかないうちから絵を描き、幼い頃から画 家になると決めそれが叶うと信じていたそう。彼女の作品には、幼い頃の体験からインスピレーシ ョンを得たものが多くみられます。例えば、作品にしばしば登場する山犬。森で迷った時どこから か現れ、家まで導いてくれたという不思議な体験がベースとなっています。 小松氏が描くのは、「神獣」。「神獣」は小松氏の死生観の象徴でもあります。また、飼っていた 動物の死に立ち会った時「魂が抜ける瞬間」を経験したと言います。大好きだった祖父が亡くなっ た時に同じ瞬間を体験した彼女は「生と死は人でも動物でも平等である」と悟ります。肉体を捨て たとき魂の純粋さが問われると感じた小松氏は、神獣を通して魂の世界を表現していると語ります。 目に見えぬ「魂」の世界とのつながりをアートに描き、観る人に伝えようとしているようです。 Gen de Art Jun 2024

Live Painting Style 瞑想とライブペインティングスタイル From around 2012, she started performing live painting as a kind of ritual. When she approaches the canvas with prayers, she confidently squeezes out tubes of paint and layers the colors without hesitation.

The Divine Spirits she paints are not preconceived images but rather figures she feels she can meet anytime through meditation. The reason she paints large eyes is to make the audience feel as though their own souls are being seen. When one sees Komatsu's Divine Spirits , the feeling of being stared at is no mere illusion.

2012 年ごろから、神事としてのライブペイントを描くようになり ました。祈りを捧げてキャンバスに向かうと、迷いなく絵具のチュ ーブを絞り出し、絵具を重ねて描いていきます。神獣などはイメー ジを浮かべてから描いているのではなく、瞑想すればいつでも会え る感覚だといいます。眼を大きく描くのは、観客が己の魂を見られ ていると感じさせるためだそう。小松氏の神獣の絵をみると、見つ められているように感じるのは気のせいではないのです。 59

Painting Kukai's Prayers

in the Sacred Site of Mount Koya a UNESCO World Heritage site On March 21, 2024, a special place for Komatsu, inspired by Kukai (Kobo Daishi), founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, she conducted live painting at Mount Koya, the sacred site established by Kukai. The year 2024 marks the 1250th anniversary of Kukai's birth, and March 21 is the anniversary of his eternal meditation.

Komatsu approached the day with sincere feelings. Amidst the chanting of monks, dressed in white robes, Komatsu completed her painting without hesitation on a large golden canvas. The painting, depicting a black and white dog and a dragon that guided Kukai to this place, was dedicated to Koyasan Kongobuji Temple as a prayer for world peace and a memorial to the victims of the Noto Peninsula earthquake.

Live painting has been held not only in Japan but also at sacred sites around the world. On June 11, 2024, she conducted an approximately eight-hour public production at the historic Fitzrovia Chapel in London. The event was live-streamed globally, and the finished piece was later sold as a limited edition print.

で空海の祈りを描く

2024 年３月 21 日、弘法大師・空海にインスピレーションを得 ているという小松氏にとって特別な地、真言宗開祖である弘法大 師・空海が開山した聖地・高野山でライブペインティングが行わ れました。2024 年は空海生誕 1250 年の記念の年、そして 3 月 21 日は空海のご入定日。空海が永遠の瞑想に入った特別な日。 小松氏も真摯な気持ちでこの日に臨んだといいます。 The YouTube video showcases a live painting event by Komatsu at Mount Koya on March 21, 2024.

僧侶たちの読経の声が響く中、白装束に身を包んだ小松氏が姿を 現します。いつものように瞑想を終えると大きな金色のキャンバ スに迷いなく絵の具をのせ続けました。空海をこの地に導いたと いう白と黒の犬と龍、空海の祈りを描いた作品は、世界平和と能 登半島地震犠牲者への鎮魂と祈り込めて高野山・金剛峯寺に奉納 されました。 ライブペインティングは、日本のみならず世界の聖地を舞台に行 われています。2024 年 6 月 11 日には、歴史あるロンドン・フ イッツロビア礼拝堂で約 8 時間に及ぶ公開制作を行いました。そ の様子は世界中にライブ配信され、出来上がった作品は完成後、 限定版プリントエディションとして販売されました。

Komatsu's activities extend beyond painting. In Osaka's Konohana ward, formerly the site of the clean-flowing Shorenji River, a project was initiated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ward. Titled "Symbol of Overcoming Environmental Issues," the theme "Life's Brilliance, Onward to the Future" was chosen to develop an art park, and Komatsu was selected to create the first piece. The vividly colored dragon, which seems to leap right out of her paintings, was produced under the guidance of Junichi Okada, an actor associated with Osaka. Despite its impressive size of 3.4 meters, the water dragon exudes a humorous warmth.

小松美羽氏の活動の場は絵画制作にとどまりません。大阪市此 花区の、かつて清流だった正蓮寺川。此花区制 100 周年をき っかけに「環境問題克服の象徴」と位置づけ、「命の輝きを脈々 と、未来へ」をテーマにアート公園に整備するプロジェクトの 第一弾として小松美羽氏に白羽の矢が立ったのです。 正蓮寺川公園では、大阪ゆかりの俳優・岡田准一氏のプロデュ ースにより立体作品「此花水龍」が制作されました。小松氏の 絵からそのまま飛び出したような色鮮やかな龍。高さ 3.4 メー トルの迫力満点の大作ですが、ユーモラスな温かみを感じさせ る水龍です。

The Great Harmonization At the heart of Komatsu's works lies "Yamato Power." "Yamato Power" does not simply refer to "Japanese-ness" as it might be commonly understood. According to Komatsu, "Yamato Power" is Japan's ancient ability to integrate various elements and design them together.

This concept led to the creation of "NEXT MANDALA—Home of the Soul" at Mount Koya in 2021, teaching her that the current era calls for a great harmonizing force. "The Great Harmonization" suggests that all living beings are equal in soul, and every entity can coexist while maintaining its individuality. Achieving "The Great Harmonization" requires the "Yamato Power" to transcend differences and foster connections and harmony. This is the creative philosophy of "The Great Harmonization" that Komatsu continues to pursue through her prayer and painting, moving from "The Great Acceleration" to "The Great Harmonization," tirelessly advocating for the equality and coexistence of souls. 小松美羽氏の作品の根底にあるのは「大和力」。「大和力」とは、いわゆる「日本らしさ」 ということではありません。小松氏の言う「大和力」は、日本が古来もっている、いろ いろなものを組み合わせ、まとめあげてデザインする力であり方法です。 2021 年、高野山で《NEXT MANDALA―魂の故郷》を制作したことをきっかけに、今 の時代に求められているのは大いなる調和の力「The Great Harmonization」であるこ とを学んだという小松氏。「The Great Harmonization（大調和 )」とは、生きとし生 けるものが魂においては平等で、あらゆる存在がその個性を保持しながら共存しうると いう生命論です。「大調和」を為すには、さまざまなものを組み合わせてまとめあげる 「大和力」が不可欠。つまり「大和力」でさまざまな「違い」をのり越えてつながり、 調和していくのが小松氏の創作理念「The Great Harmonization（大調和）」なのです。 「大加速（The Great Acceleration）」から「大調和（The Great Harmonization）」へ。 小松美羽氏は、魂の平等と共存のために祈り、描き続けます。

Your journey began with traditional Chinese cloisonné before transitioning to repoussé. Could you describe the moment or experience that inspired this shift in medium and how it has influenced your design philosophy?

For the beginning, my family started the cloisonné studio – the enamel technique from Byzantine times, an enameling process with a copper base. Then they silver solder copper wires with the design they want onto the base, and each of those cells are filled with enamel. After filling with enamel, it's put in the kiln for firing, shrinking below the level of the wire. Then you apply more enamel and fire it again until it's flush or over the level of the wire and then polish it. It's a multi-step process that starts with a copper base, which is why I'm so familiar with working with metals. When I started a showroom in Los Angeles, showing the different steps of cloisonné from beginning to finish, a lot of designers started getting interested in the copper, inspiring me to start repoussé work.

The showroom, located in West Hollywood across from the Pacific Design Center, attracted interior designers who were more drawn towards the metal base itself, the unenameled pieces.

クオさんの旅は、伝統的な中国の七宝細工から始まり、 彫金へと移行しましたが、この転換のきっかけとなった 瞬間や経験、そしてそれがあなたのデザイン哲学にどの ような影響を与えたかを教えてください。 私の家族は北京で銅の土台に釉薬を満たすビザンチンの 釉薬技法を使用する七宝工房を始めました。銅線を銀鑞 ではんだ付けし、好きなデザインに仕上げ、その区画一 つ一つを釉薬で満たします。その後、窯に入れて焼成し、 銅線の高さより下に収縮させます。そして、もう一度釉 薬を塗り、銅線と同じ高さか、それを超えるまでもう一 度焼成し、磨きます。銅の土台から始まり何段階もの工 程があるからこそ、私は金属を扱うことに慣れ親しんで いるのです。私が、ロサンゼルスでショールームを始め た頃、そこで七宝の様々 な工程を初めから終わ りまでまで紹介しまし た。すると多くのデザイ ナーが銅に興味を持ち 始め、それをきっかけに 私は彫金を始めたので す。ウェスト・ハリウッ ドのパシフィック デザ イン センターの向かい にあったこのショール ームは、金属製のベース そのもの、つまり釉薬を 塗っていない作品に惹 かれるインテリアデザ イナーたちを惹きつけ ました。

Your work is recognized for "opening up" Chinese tradition by integrating Art Nouveau and Art Deco influences.

How do you balance honoring traditional craftsmanship while also pushing the boundaries with contemporary design?

The techniques are the techniques, but it's not an either/or situation.

Being inspired by a Western period like Art Deco doesn't mean you can't honor Chinese aesthetics, tradition, and culture. I got the Art Deco-Art Nouveau influence from my father, along with traditional Chinese influences from the Han dynasty to create a new look for repoussé. European designers like Joseph Hoffman were also influenced by Chinese classical shapes and designs. It's about being open to different aesthetics, inspirations, and cultures, mixing old crafts with Art Deco or Nouveau and traditional techniques. It's reworking these techniques to revitalize them, pushing the perception and widening the boundaries of what traditional Chinese art, like cloisonné and repoussé, can be. For example, with Peking glass, it was traditionally very small, but I pushed to create pieces on a larger scale and with a less precious stone color palette, changing the perception of the design and technique.

クオさんの作品は、アー ル・ヌーヴォーとアール ・デコの影響を取り入れ ることで、中国の伝統を 「開放」したと評価され ています。伝統的な職人 技を尊重しながら、現代 的なデザインで境界を 押し広げるためのバラ ンスをどのようにとっ ていますか？ 技術は技術ですが、二者 択一ということではあ りません。アール・デコ のような西洋の時代に 触発されたからといっ て、中国の美学、伝統、 文化を尊重できないと いう意味ではないのです。私は父からアール・デコ、ア ール・ヌーヴォーの影響を受け、さらに漢代からの伝統 的な中国の影響を受けて、彫金の新しい形を生み出しま した。ヨーゼフ・ホフマンのような欧州のデザイナーも、 中国の古典的な形やデザインに触発されています。つま り、異なる美学、インスピレーション、文化を受け入れ、 昔ながらの工芸品とアール・デコやアール・ヌーヴォー、 そして伝統的な技術を組み合わせる、ということなので す。これらの技法を練り直して再構築し、七宝や彫金な どの中国の伝統芸術への見方と可能性の境界を押し広げ るのです。例えば、北京硝子の場合、伝統的にはとても 小さなものですが、私は希少性のやや低い貴石の色彩を 使い、大きな作品を制作することに注力し、デザインと 技術に対する認識を変化させました。

I am fortunate to have an audience that appreciates and collects what I make. The input comes from myself and from designers I work with, who are also extremely creative. It's about always thinking of new things and solving problems, like achieving a certain dimension or scale with the limitations of materials.

You mentioned that organic forms and motifs from the Chinese Han and Ming dynasties often inspire you. Could you take us through your creative process when beginning a new piece, from concept to finished product?

It's different for every piece. For example, I was inspired by bell peppers from a farmers market and snails I saw on a walk, which led to creating repoussé sculptures on a different scale. The creative process involves not making the piece too cute or scary but finding a balance, like with the Shang Chandelier inspired by an antique Shang Dynasty earring. It's about developing a piece from an organic form or motif and transforming it into something unique.

You have managed to keep the essence of Chinese decorative traditions alive in your work. What advice would you give to young artists seeking to preserve their cultural heritage in today’s modern art world?

Young people should keep looking at museums, learning, and experiencing things. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. It took me years to achieve what I wanted in a piece sometimes. Being inquisitive is important, as is learning from different museums and studying various things. Curiosity, understanding different cultures and perspectives, and being open to learning and appreciating different arts and traditions are crucial. Traveling and experiencing different countries and cultures is also very important.

クオさんの作品は、台北の国立歴史博物館から世界中の高級ホテルま で幅広く展示されていますが、国内外の観客の心に響くような作品を 制作する際に、どのようなことを意識していますか？ 私の作品を高く評価し、収集して下さるお客様に恵まれていることは、 幸運なことです。アイデアは、私自身や非常に創造的なデザイナーと 一緒に働くことから得られます。常に新しいことを考え、例えば制限 のある素材で一定の寸法やスケールを実現することなど、課題を解決 することが肝心なのです。 中国の漢や明の時代からの有機的な形やモチーフに触発されることが 多いとおっしゃっていましたが、新しい作品に取り掛かる際の、コン セプトから完成までの創作過程を教えていただけますか？ それは作品ごとに異なります。例えば、地元の農産物市場で買ったピ ーマンや、散歩中に見かけた蝸牛にアイデアを得て、異なる大きさの 彫金を制作したこともあります。創作過程では、アンティークの殷王 朝時代のイヤリングにインスパイアされた「殷のシャンデリア」のよ うに、作品を可愛くも怖くもしすぎずに、バランスを取ることも含ま れています。有機的な形やモチーフから作品を発展させ、ユニークな ものに変えることが重要なのです。

How do you envision the future direction of your designs, particularly in how you plan to continue blending traditional Chinese art with contemporary design trends? Are there any new materials or technologies you are particularly interested in exploring?

I'm interested in using a certain kind of color for Chinese lacquer, Mi-se, to make it lighter, and exploring different materials like stone with lacquer combinations. It's about exploring different things that interest me, being able to create pieces that I feel passionate about.

クオさんは中国における装飾的な伝統の本質を作品に生かすことに成 功していますが、今日の現代アート界で、自身の文化的遺産を守ろう としている若いアーティストに、どんな助言をしますか？ 若い人たちは、これからも美術館を見て、学び、体験し続けなければ なりません。失敗を恐れないで下さい。私も作品でやりたいことを実 現するのに何年もかかりました。探求心旺盛であることも大切ですし、 色々な美術館から学び、様々なことを勉強することも必要です。好奇心、 多彩な文化や視点を理解すること、そして異なる芸術や伝統を学び、 感謝する姿勢を持つこと、また旅をして様々な国や文化に触れること も非常に素晴らしいことです。

“VILLA KUJOYAMA" 日仏交流に焦点を当てた アーティスト・イン・レジデンス「ヴィラ九条山」

À Kyoto, dans le quartier de Higashiyama, un chemin escarpé mène, depuis la station de métro Keage, à un bâtiment ouvert combinant béton et verre, niché sur une montagne luxuriante. Entourée par une nature belle et tranquille et surplombant le paysage urbain de Kyoto, la Villa Kujoyama est une résidence d’artistes prestigieuse, qui a célébré en 2022 ses 30 ans d’existence.

Located in Kyoto, Higashiyama, a steep climb from Keage Station leads to an open building combining concrete and glass nestled halfway up a lush mountain. A FRANCO-JAPANESE ARTISTIC RESEARCH VENUE IN THE ANCIENT CITY OF KYOTO Les résidences d’artistes, qui bénéficient aujourd’hui d’une attention accrue au Japon, permettent à des créateurs de séjourner dans un pays ou une région étrangère pendant une certaine période afin de se consacrer à la recherche, à la création et à la diffusion de leurs travaux. Au Japon, ces programmes sont souvent gérés par les collectivités locales, dans le cadre d’initiatives de promotion régionale et d’échanges internationaux. La Villa Kujoyama est à quant à elle gérée par l’Institut français, organisme dépendant du gouvernement français, et est aujourd’hui une antenne de l’Institut français du Japon, impliqué dans la diffusion de la culture et de la langue françaises dans l’archipel nippon.

Les origines de la Villa Kujoyama remontent à 1927 avec la création de l'"Institut franco-japonais du Kansai", sous l’impulsion de la Société de rapprochement intellectuel franco-japonais. L'Institut déménage en 1936 près de l'Université de Kyoto, laissant le bâtiment sur Kujoyama inutilisé. Cinquante ans plus tard, en 1986, le ministère français des Affaires étrangères initie un projet de construction d'un établissement destiné à accueillir des artistes et des chercheurs, aboutissant à l'inauguration de la Villa Kujoyama en 1992. Conçu par l'architecte Kunio Kato, le bâtiment est parfaitement adapté à la recherche artistique franco-japonaise, et son architecture suggère un mariage raffiné des deux cultures.

Artist-in-residence programs, nowadays getting more and more attention in Japan, allow artists to stay in a foreign country or region for a certain period to engage in research, creation, and presentation of their works. In Japan, these programs are often managed by local governments as part of regional promotion and international exchange initiatives. Villa Kujoyama however is managed by Institut français, an organization affiliated with the French government, and is today a branch of Institut français du Japon, involved in the promotion of French culture and language in the Japanese archipelago.

The origins of Villa Kujoyama trace back to 1927, with the creation of the "Institut franco-japonais du Kansai", driven by the Société de rapprochement intellectuel franco-japonais (Society for Franco-Japanese Intellectual Exchanges). The Institute later moved near Kyoto University, leaving the building on Kujoyama intact. Fifty years later, in 1986, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated a construction project for a facility to host artists and researchers, leading to the inauguration of Villa Kujoyama in 1992. Designed by architect Kunio Kato, the building is suited for Franco-Japanese artistic research, and its architecture suggests a refined marriage of both cultures.

古都・京都に建つ日仏の芸術研究の場 近年、日本でも注目を集めている「アーティスト・イン・レジデンス」。 アーティストが異なる文化を持つ国や地域に一定期間滞在し、リサー チや制作、発表などを行うプログラムのこと。日本では、地域振興や 国際交流を兼ねて地方自治体で運営するケースが多くみられます。一 方、ヴィラ九条山は、フランス政府に従属する組織であるアンスティ チュ・フランセパリ本部によって運営されており、現在は日本におけ るフランス文化・言語の普及に携わるアンスティチュ・フランセの支 部として活動しています。 ヴィラ九条山の原点は、1927 年「関西地方にフランスと日本の文化会 館を」と設立された「関西日仏学館」まで遡ります。1936 年に関西日 仏学館はその後京都大学近くに移転し、九条山の建物は残されたまま になっていました。そして 1986 年、フランス外務省がアーティスト や研究者などレジデントを受け入れる施設の建設プロジェクトを推進 し、1992 年にヴィラ九条山として新たに開館したのです。建築家・加 藤邦男氏の設計は、日本とフランスの文化の優美なマリアージュをも たらす日仏芸術研究の場にふさわしい建物となりました。

Since its establishment, Villa Kujoyama has hosted over 400 artists who came to nourish their practice through a dialogue with Japanese culture. Residencies range from four to six months, encompassing a diverse array of fields including visual arts, architecture, photography, theatre, film, art criticism and curation, dance, music, literature, culinary art, video games and more, welcoming about 15 residents annually.

In 2014, after eighteen months of renovation works, Villa Kujoyama reopened its doors and developed its residency program through two initiatives. First, with the support of its main patron, the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, the introduction of the "métiers d'art" (crafts) discipline into the residency program is designed to encourage dialogue between all disciplines and traditional Japanese crafts. In addition, the opening of the "Duo" program enables artists based in France and Japanese artists to apply together for a project. Through this program, renowned Japanese contemporary artist Kohei Nawa and choreographer Damien Jalet spent together a three-month residency in 2015, collaborating for the creation of a dance piece.

Depuis sa création, la Villa Kujoyama a accueilli plus de 400 artistes venant nourrir leur pratique au contact de la culture japonaise. Les résidences varient de quatre à six mois et englobent un large éventail de domaines, notamment les arts plastiques, l'architecture, la photographie, le théâtre, le cinéma, la critique d'art et le commissariat d’exposition, la danse, la musique, la littérature, l’art culinaire ou encore les jeux vidéo. Une quinzaine de lauréats et lauréates sont accueillis en résidence chaque année à la Villa Kujoyama.

En 2014, après dix-huit mois de travaux de rénovation, la Villa Kujoyama rouvre ses portes et élargit son programme de résidences à travers deux initiatives. D’une part, sous l'impulsion de son mécène principal la Fondation Bettencourt Schueller, l’accueil de représentants de la discipline « métiers d’art » vise à favoriser le dialogue entre l’ensemble des disciplines et les métiers d’art traditionnels japonais. D’autre part, l’ouverture du programme « Duo » permet à des artistes basés en France et des artistes japonais de candidater ensemble pour un projet. C’est dans le cadre de ce programme que l'artiste contemporain japonais renommé Kohei Nawa et le chorégraphe Damien Jalet sont restés en résidence trois mois en 2015, collaborant ensemble sur une pièce de danse.

ヴィラ九条山は設立以来、日本にインスピレーションを求めてやってきた 400 名以上のアーティスト をレジデントとして迎え入れてきました。レジデントの滞在期間は４か月から６か月。造形、建築、 写真、演劇、映画、美術評論や展覧会企画、ダンス、音楽、文学、料理研究、ビデオゲームなど分野 はとても多彩。毎年 15 名ほどを受け入れています。 2014 年には、１年間半かけて建物を改修しリニューアルオープン。時代を見据えた新たなプログラ ムも打ち出されました。主要メセナのベタンクールシュエーラー財団の支援により、ひとつは「工芸 部門」の受け入れ。分野にわたって日本の伝統工芸との対話を促し、培っていくことを目的としてい ます。また、フランス人あるいはフランスを拠点に活動しているアーティストと日本人アーティスト の共同プロジェクト「ヴィラ九条山デュオ」も開始。2015 年には日本現代アートの第一人者・名和 晃平氏と振付師ダミアン・ジャレ氏がこのプログラムで３か月滞在し、コラボレーションをしながら 舞踏作品を作り上げました。 Gen de Art Jun 2024

Directrice de l’institution depuis septembre 2022, Adèle Fremolle revient sur les changements survenus au cours des 30 dernières années. « Initialement, l'objectif principal de notre établissement était de permettre aux résidents de se concentrer sur leurs recherches dans un environnement calme, loin de la vie quotidienne. Aujourd'hui, il se positionne comme une résidence de recherche où les artistes peuvent interagir avec les locaux et s'inspirer d’une autre culture tout en créant leurs œuvres, » déclare-t-elle. Pour promouvoir les échanges entre les résidents et la communauté locale, la Villa Kujoyama est ouverte tous les premiers jeudis du mois de 14h à 21h, offrant l’opportunité aux lauréats de « présenter leurs travaux en cours sous des formes variées (performances, conférences, présentations de recherche) et d’interagir avec le public pour apprendre et expérimenter la culture japonaise, et découvrir ainsi de nouvelles façons de voir le monde ». Une résidence à la Villa Kujoyama vise véritablement à une connexion avec la communauté locale.

Ainsi, lors du premier jeudi de mars, l'artiste de performance Tsirihaka Harrivel, dont la recherche porte sur les origines martiales du cirque, a invité le maître de kyudo Kiyoshi Yamaguchi, accompagné par le harpiste Tomoyuki Asakawa, à donner une performance unique de tir à l'arc japonais.

AN OPEN RESIDENCY FOSTERING INTERACTIONS WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY さまざまな人との交流

開かれたレジデンスへ

As the director of the institution since September 2022, Adèle Fremolle reflects on the changes that happened over the past 30 years. "Initially, the main purpose of our establishment was to allow residents to focus on their research in a quiet environment, away from everyday life. Today, it positions itself as a research residency where artists can interact with locals and gain inspiration from foreign cultures while creating their works," she says. To promote interaction between residents and the local community, Villa Kujoyama is open to the public every first Thursday of the month from 2 pm to 9 pm, offering residents the opportunity to "showcase their ongoing work through various forms (performances, conferences, research presentations) and interact with visitors in order to learn and experience Japanese culture, thereby discovering new ways of seeing the world." Hence, a residency at Villa Kujoyama aims to connect with the local community.

2022 年 9 月から館長を務めるアデル・フレモル氏は、設立から 30 年が経って変わってきた部分があると語ります。

For instance, on the first Thursday of March, performance artist Tsirihaka Harrivel, whose research focuses on the martial origins of circus, invited kyudo master Kiyoshi Yamaguchi, accompanied by harpist Tomoyuki Asakawa, to give a unique Japanese archery performance.

例えば 3 月の一般公開では、サーカスとその起源とされる武術の関連 をリサーチしているパフォーマンス・アーティストのツィリアカ・ア リヴェール氏が、弓道の師範の山口喜由氏を招き、朝川朋之氏による ハープの演奏に合わせて弓を引くパフォーマンスを演出しました。

「開館当初は、日常と離れた静かな環境でリサーチを行うことが当施 設の主な目的でした。現在は、アーティストとして異国文化に触れ、 地元の人と交流することでインスピレーションを得ながら作品を制作 する調査研究のレジデンスという位置づけです」。 フレモル氏は、レジデントと地域社会との交流を促すため毎月第一 木曜日に施設の一般公開を始めました。「パフォーマンスやリサー チの発表、講演会など、様々な形でリサーチの課程を発表したり人々 と交流することで、日本の文化を学び経験し、新しい世界の在り方 を学ぶことができる」。地域社会とつながるレジデンスを目指して いるのです。

Les lauréats n’ont pas d’obligation de production durant leur séjour. Avec le soutien de l’équipe de la Villa Kujoyama, ils sont invités à établir des relations avec les acteurs du monde artistique, universitaire et économique pendant leur résidence, et concrétiser leurs recherches une fois rentrés chez eux. Par exemple, le concepteur de jeux vidéos Christophe Galati a produit un nouveau jeu sur la base de recherches et développements de concepts conduits lors de sa résidence en 2019. La Villa Kujoyama se positionne comme un lieu idéal pour formuler des idées créatives et cultiver des relations avec différents collaborateurs.

Pendant les cinq ans qui suivent la fin de leur résidence, les lauréats continuent de bénéficier d’un accompagnement en France et au Japon grâce au soutien de différentes institutions telles que l'Ambassade de France au Japon, l'Institut français, la Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris, et l’ensemble du réseau de partenaires de la Villa Kujoyama, composé d’universités, de structures culturelles et de créateurs. En 2022, en collaboration avec le Kanazawa College of Art et la Fondation de l’entreprise Mitani Sangyo Co., Ltd., la Villa Kujoyama a lancé le programme "Artist in Kanazawa Machiya". Dans ce cadre, les lauréats peuvent prolonger leur séjour au Japon dans une machiya traditionnelle de Kanazawa pendant environ un mois, et interagir avec les étudiants et la communauté locale, tout en découvrant l'artisanat traditionnel et l'art contemporain de Kanazawa.

Située à Kyoto, ville d’art et de culture, la Villa Kujoyama nourrit la recherche et la créativité des artistes au milieu d'une nature luxuriante. Espace ouvert où des artistes de multiples disciplines des deux pays s’influencent mutuellement, permettant la rencontre entre deux cultures, elle est un lieu de résidence déterminant pour les artistes et leurs recherches, et la concrétisation des échanges artistiques franco-japonais.

Residents are not required to produce results during their stay. With the support of Villa Kujoyama staff, they are encouraged to build relationships with the Japanese art, academic, and business communities during their stay and develop ideas into projects upon returning home. For instance, game designer Christophe Galati launched a new game based on research and concept development carried out during his residency in 2019. Villa Kujoyama is the ideal place to formulate creative ideas and cultivate relationships with various collaborators.

During the five years following the end of their residency, residents continue to benefit from support in both France and Japan, thanks to various institutions such as the French Embassy in Japan, Institut français, the Maison de la Culture du Japon (Japanese Cultural Center) in Paris, and Villa Kujoyama's broad network of partners, that includes universities, cultural institutions and creators.

In 2022, in collaboration with the Kanazawa College of Art and Mitani Sangyo Co., Ltd. Foundation, Villa Kujoyama initiated a new residency program called "Artist in Kanazawa Machiya". Through this initiative, residents can stay in a traditional machiya in Kanazawa for about a month, and interact with students and locals while experiencing both the contemporary art scene and traditional crafts of Kanazawa.

Situated in Kyoto, a city with a rich cultural background, Villa Kujoyama nurtures the research and creativity of artists amid lush nature. As an open space where artists from multiple disciplines from both countries influence each other, enabling two cultures to meet, it is a key place for artists and their research, and the concrete expression of Franco-Japanese artistic exchanges.

SIMOSE ART MUSEUM In the midst of the magnificent natural scenery facing Hiroshima Bay in the Seto Inland Sea, Simose Art Museum, which opened in March 2023, is celebrating its first anniversary with an exhibition titled "Matazo Kayama - Seeking Innovative Styles."

This exhibition features the works of Matazo Kayama (1927-2004), a Japanese painter who was active from the Showa to the Heisei period and had ties to Hiroshima. The exhibition runs until June 30th. In addition to the exhibition, the museum is part of a larger complex known as "Simose Art Garden Villa," which includes villas and a restaurant, enhancing the overall appeal of the venue. 瀬戸内海の広島湾に面した雄大な自然の中に佇む下瀬美術館。2023 年 3 月にオ ープンした同館の開館一周年記念として、昭和から平成にかけて活躍した広島と ゆかりのある日本画家、加山又造（1927―2004）の作品展「加山又造―革新 をもとめて」が開催されています（6 月 30 日まで）。作品展、そして美術館を 中心にヴィラやレストランなども併設する複合施設「SIMOSE ART GARDEN VILLA」の魅力を併せて伝えます。

MATAZO KAYAMA AND HIROSHIMA 加山又造と広島 Matazo Kayama was born in a family of kimono textile designer in Nishijin, Kyoto, but his connections to Hiroshima are significant. His grandfather, Gyokuden Tanabe, was active in Hiroshima from the late Meiji to the Taisho periods. Furthermore, his father, Katsuya Kayama, spent his early childhood in Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, while assigned to create teaching materials at the Iwakuni branch of the Naval Academy in Yamaguchi as part of student labor mobilization, Kayama experienced a pivotal event that would deeply influence his later works. During an air raid warning due to an attack by a U.S. B-29 bomber, he witnessed the flash of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and the subsequent mushroom cloud while taking shelter on a mountain slope on Suo-Oshima. 京都・西陣の衣装図案家の家に生まれた加山又造ですが、広島との縁も少なくあ りません。祖父の田辺玉田は明治後半から大正にかけて広島を中心に活躍。また 父、加山勝也も幼少期は広島で過ごしました。学徒勤労動員で山口の海軍兵学校 岩国分校の教材作成のために配属されていた 1945 年 8 月 6 日。加山は、その後 の作品にも少なからぬ影響を与える出来事に遭遇します。米軍の B29 爆撃機襲 来の警報で逃げ込んだ周防大島の山の斜面で、広島市に投下された原爆の閃光、 そしてその後広島市上空に広がっていくきのこ雲を目の当たりにしたのです。

WORLD'S LEADING MOVABLE EXHIBITION ROOMS

The "Simose Art Museum," designed by the world-renowned architect, Shigeru Ban, who is a respected senior alumnus of Yuki Kayama, Kayama's granddaughter, features about 20 of Kayama's works.

Particularly notable are the colorful, movable exhibition rooms inspired by the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and utilizing Hiroshima's shipbuilding technology to float on water. Rooms 2 and 3 display "The Blue Sun," depicting the light of the atomic bomb explosion and the scorched Hiroshima, resonating with the image of a thin, bent crow, reminiscent of Kayama himself.

As time passed, Kayama's style evolved significantly. He created new ink paintings influenced by Japanese and Northern Song Chinese landscape paintings, and mountain paintings based on his studies of snowy mountains. The new ink painting "Sea of Clouds of Huangshan," recently acquired by Simose Art Museum, is being unveiled in rooms 4 and 5.

Additionally, outdoor exhibitions feature ceramic plate reproductions of Kazan's "Oboro" and "Screen with Floral Fans" (owned by Yamatane Museum of Art), displayed in the water basin of the movable exhibition rooms, creating a fantastical space lit up after sunset.

On the occasion of the first anniversary, Yuki Kayama commented, "The rich life in Hiroshima, a place with ancient history, the calm seascape, and the memories of war overlap with the reality I see at Simose Art Museum overlooking Hiroshima Bay. Because of the sad memories, the calm and beautiful sea appears even more radiant, the sacredness of Miyajima moves my heart, and the industrial bay area makes me appreciate the greatness of human endeavor and peace."

作品を彩る世界最先端の可動展示室 「SIMOSE ART MUSEUM」を設計した世界的建築家、坂茂氏 は加山の孫である由起氏にとって同じ学園出身の尊敬する先輩 であるというご縁。坂氏が手掛けた美術館が、展示された加山 のおよそ 20 の作品群を引き立てています。 中でも、注目は瀬戸内海の島々に着想し、広島の造船技術を活 用して水の浮力で浮かせている世界でも類を見ないカラフルな 「可動展示室」。全 8 室のうちの第 2、第 3 室では、加山がか つて見た原爆のさく裂の光、焼け野原の広島を思わせる、痩せ てうつむいた加山自身とも言える盲目のカラスを描いた『蒼い 日輪』が展示されています。 時代とともに作風を変えた新規性でも注目された加山。日本や 中国・北宋の山水画に学んだ新しい水墨画、雪山への取材によ る山岳画も制作され、第 4、第 5 室では、その中から下瀬美術 館が新たに収蔵した水墨画『黄山雲海』が初披露されています。 また、屋外展示として、加山の『おぼろ』、『華扇屏風』（山 種美術館所蔵）の原画を複製した陶板作品が可動展示室の水盤 に展示され、日没後はライトアップされた幻想的空間に身を委 ねられます。 「開館一周年記念 加山又造―革新をもとめて」に際し、由起氏 はこうコメントを寄せました。 「広島という古代からの歴史のある土地での豊かな生活、穏や かな海の景色、戦争の記憶が、自分の現実に見ている下瀬美術 館を抱く広島湾の景色に重なりました。悲しい思い出があるか ら一層、穏やかで美しい海は輝いて見え、宮島の神聖さに心動 かされ、工業地帯の湾岸に人の営みの崇高さや平和の素晴らし さを実感します」

The international recognition is partly due to the high caliber of participants, including some of the world's best bartenders, who bring a high level of expertise and enthusiasm to the show. This year, Jason Crawley, a worldrenowned innovator in the bar industry, was invited to present a seminar that showcased his ability to creatively transform the bar industry from multiple perspectives.

Despite a few cancellations due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are thrilled to see such a large turnout once again. This year's highlight has undoubtedly been craft gin, which has become incredibly popular recently.

Additionally, the global distribution of the anime "BARTENDER Glass of God" to over 150 countries has significantly influenced our focus, making this theme exceptionally popular at the show.

The CONCEPTION of the festival

Yang and Tsutsumi, both established musicians, were Starker’s students at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and the United States. With his 100th anniversary approaching, they came up with the idea to celebrate Starker’s life and career with a grand musical festival. “He did great things, not only in the area of arts, but also for humankind. He taught us all and made us into successful musicians and artists”, – Tsutsumi says.

Yang adds that, with Starker’s birthday coming up on July 5th, the festival will be divided into two parts, as if embracing this key date in the centre: the events in Seoul will be taking place between July 3rd and 5th, and in Tokyo – between July 5th and 7th. “We share his birthday between the two cities, and I thought that would be very meaningful, and I’m sure he’d be very pleased with it”, – he explains. “I think it is also meaningful because it says right away how international Mr. Starker was,” – Tsutsumi adds.

Both musicians emphasise the lasting influence of Starker’s teaching on their personal lives and careers, attributing their success to him to a large extent. For Tsutsumi, Starker played the role of a guide into the world of music. “I had to start from the zero to build up, and I did. And I really owe him. He always said you always had to seek for the very best possible of your ability,” – he recalls. On the other hand, Yang says that his first encounter with Starker’s music in his early childhood forever defined his calling: “The very first cello recital I heard was Janos Starker playing in Seoul when I was seven. It really ignited such incredible passion for the cello in me, for its pure sound, for the most beautiful dignified way of making music. Starker had become an example to look up to ever since.”

“We wanted to have the masterworks that Janos Starker used to perform, and we wanted to carry on with the legacy of his art history,” – Yang explains. “The Bach Suites and the Brahms sonatas, and also the choices of repertoire for the cello ensemble concerts were carefully chosen to reflect the celebratory mood that we wanted to create for his 100th anniversary”. “I think all the pieces chosen were the ones we all studied with Mr. Sharker,” – Tsutsumi continues.

The program starts in Seoul with the concert of Bach’s Cello Suites, one of the most famous works ever written for cello performance. “Bach Suits are for us, cellists. It’s our soul and body – and everything,” – Tsutsumi says, adding: “Then, of course, we have the cello ensemble, followed by sonatas and, naturally, cello concertos”.

Yang also points out that the program “reflects Starker’s past and what still remains in us.” “Bach Suits are considered to be not only masterpieces for cello, but also represent important cultural heritage for humanity.”

“When you look at the three evenings, it is so varied and yet so deeply meaningful.

Not only in memory of Janos Starker, but in memory of the cellistic world and also the rich tradition in our society”, – he concludes.

The variety of the program is designed to reflect all the different aspects of cello playing and recall various stages of Starker’s career. “The first evening in Tokyo, we will be playing the three Brahms sonatas, which he used to play very regularly at the greatest artistic level,” – Yang says. “The second evening is Beethoven’s sonata, Kodaly’s solo sonata, one movement, and then cello ensemble, and also part of a duo, in which Professor Starker used to perform”.

The directors of the festivals say that their selection of music to be played at the festival’s events was also inspired by their learning experience with Janos Starker, and the program was designed in such a way as to commemorate his mastery and musical contribution.

Yang and Tsutsumi agree that the continuation of the festival is possible in the future but may see some transformations, highlighting the uniqueness of the event that will take place this year in July. “Professor Yang is a music director or artistic director of the Pyeongchang Music Festival in Korea, and I myself do a lot of things at the Suntory Hall. So we do have some festivals but not just the magnitude of this event,” – Tsutsumi explains.

“I think the important thing is that we do not compromise”, – he continues. “We wanted this special anniversary to be very special, so I am not sure we can repeat this. Otherwise, it will not be special anymore”.

However, because both directors frequently travel between Japan and Korea, as well as stay in touch with a broad range of cellists internationally, other festivals can surely be expected in the future. “I am sure that we will find another way to share our rich tradition and heritage in both countries in the future,” – Yang concludes.

Il Ristorante Niko Romito at Bulgari Hotel Tokyo, the main dining venue, achieved a Michelin star just eight months after opening. Overseen by Niko Romito, who has garnered three Michelin stars at his restaurant Reale in Italy, he is a prominent figure representing Italian culinary culture, dedicated to conveying the essence of Italian gastronomy.

We spoke with Romito, who helms the concept at Bulgari Hotels worldwide, about his culinary philosophy and the aspirations of Il Ristorante - Niko Romito.

How have you incorporated your culinary philosophy into the menu at Bulgari Hotel Tokyo?

My central theme is "simplicity" – the epitome of simplicity. This concept is both my starting point and goal, and I find it resonates well with Japan's climate and culture. Focusing on basics and moving forward from there reflects a cleanliness and transparency that aligns with my culinary philosophy and seems to echo values appreciated in Japan.

Could you share a dish that best reflects this "simplicity"?

I would highlight the "Spaghetti e Pomodoro" as a simple representation of Italian flair. While it's a well-known dish, our version, achieved through extensive research, presents a depth of tomato flavor that diverges significantly from the traditional spaghetti al pomodoro.

How do you integrate unique Japanese ingredients with Italian cuisine?

Using Japanese ingredients often results in more intriguing outcomes than with Italian counterparts. An example is "eggplant." The combination of our Italian culinary experience with Tokyo's local, seasonal eggplants has led to unexpectedly fascinating and excellent results.

Conveying and implementing one's vision to chefs worldwide is no easy task.

What do you consider most crucial in their training?

The most crucial aspect is the process of sharing identity. It's important for people to understand and appreciate my vision, to see its value and like it. Chefs are tasked with recreating my cuisine, which requires a deep understanding of it. However, if they cannot find value in my vision, no matter their skill level, they may not be well-suited to work with me. Not everyone will agree with what I aim to achieve. It's vital that those who choose to work here do so because they like and believe in my vision, willing to commit and strive alongside me. This, I believe, is of utmost importance.

ブルガリ ホテル 東京のメニューに、ご自身の料理哲学をどのように落とし込んで いるのですか？ 私が大事にしているテーマは「シンプリシティ」。シンプルの極みです。「シンプ リシティ」は、自分の出発点でもありゴールでもあるのですが、日本の風土ととて も合致すると思っています。基本をきっちりとやりきる。そこから次のステップを しっかりと進めていく。こうしたクリーンさ、透明性は日本の文化に息づくもので、 料理を通して自分が目指している哲学と合致します。「シンプリシティ」は日本的 な価値観にも共通するのではないでしょうか。 「シンプリシティ」が最も反映されている料理を教えていただけますか？ イタリアらしさをシンプルに表現した一品として、「スパゲッティ ポモドーロ」 をあげたいと思います。誰もが知っている料理ですが、研究を重ねることで、シン プルの極みでありながら凝縮したトマトの奥深い味わいを実現し、今までの「スパ ゲッティ ポモドーロ」とは全く違うものになっていると思います。 日本ならではの食材もあると思いますが、イタリア料理とどのように融合していま すか？ 日本の食材を使うことで、イタリアの食材よりも面白い出来になるものもあります。 そのひとつが「ナス」です。自分たちのイタリア料理の経験と、東京のローカルな 旬のナスが織りなすコラボレーションは思った以上に興味深く、素晴らしい仕上が りになりました。 世界中のシェフに、ご自身のビジョンを伝え実践させる過程は簡単なことではない と思いますが、トレーニングの中で最も大切にしていることは何ですか？ アイデンティティを共有するプロセスですね。やはり、私のビジョンをわかってく れる、もしくは好きでいてくれてその価値を理解してくれる人であることが大事だ と思います。シェフたちは「私の料理を再現する」ことを求められ、実際に料理を 作っていくわけですが、もし彼らが私のビジョンに何の価値も感じてくれなかった ら、いくら能力があっても私のもとで仕事をするのは向かないと思うのです。皆が 皆、私が目指そうとすることに賛同するとは限りません。「ここで一緒に働こう」 「頑張っていこう」と思ってくれる人たちが、私のビジョンが好きで、信じてつい てきてくれること。これが大事だと感じています。

The dining scene is always evolving. How do you envision the evolution of Italian cuisine in international areas like Tokyo and Dubai, and what role will Il Ristorante Niko Romito play in this?

My role is to respect the true essence and purity of Italian cuisine, always aiming to move in that direction while ensuring that the authenticity of Italian flavors is preserved without local adaptation.

Operating restaurants globally, I believe it's crucial not to alter the taste to fit local preferences. My flavor is my identity, and altering it to match local tastes is a risk. Similar to fashion, what may seem appropriate now might become outdated over time. Hence, it is essential to steadfastly create dishes that reflect my taste without compromise, continually advancing without losing sight of my identity and the messages I wish to convey.

At Bulgari Hotel Tokyo, Bulgari has maintained its unchanging identity as a high-end jeweler. Like the Bulgari brand, it's vital to forge ahead with firm beliefs and creativity. The cuisine at Il Ristorante - Niko Romito follows the same principle. Providing "authentic dishes" with a personal interpretation is my style. Therefore, creating dishes that are

simple yet genuine and uncompromisingly authentic sets Il Ristorante - Niko Romito apart from other restaurants.

As a chef and mentor, what continually inspires your creativity in cooking?

Rather than seeking inspiration externally, I motivate myself, which, in turn, sparks my creativity. Striving for awards can indeed be a motivating factor for growth. However, more important than superficial achievements is the challenge I set for myself, competing against my own standards. It's through embracing these challenges that I find inspiration within myself.

Chef Niko Romito, who values "bringing out the flavors of the ingredients through simplicity and meticulous preparation without complexity," draws from a spirit akin to Japan's Zen philosophy, focusing on essence by eliminating the unnecessary. It will be interesting to see what kind of "authentic Italian cuisine" will emerge from such an approach. Il Ristorante - Niko Romito is poised to become an increasingly notable entity in the future.

ダイニングシーンは常に変化を遂げています。今後、東京や ドバイなど国際的な地域でイタリア料理がどのように進化す ると考えていますか？そのなかで「イル・リストランテ ニ コ・ロミート」はどのような役割を果たすでしょうか？ 自分の役割は、真の、そして本来のイタリア料理を最大限リ スペクトし、混じりけのない純粋なイタリア料理を常に考え、 その方向に進むことだと考えています。世界各地でレストラ ンを開いていますが、「現地の味にしない」ことがとても大 事だと思っています。自分の味は自分のアイデンティティ。 それを現地の味にしてしまうのはとてもリスキーです。これ はファッションと同じで、その時はそれで良いかもしれませ んが、時と共に廃れていってしまう。だからこそ、現地に媚 びず自分の味を妥協せずに作っていくことがとても大切。自 分のアイデンティティ、自分が語っていること、語ろうとし ていることを絶対に見失わないで推し進めていくことが大事 なのです。 ブルガリ ホテル 東京の「ブルガリ」はハイジュエラーですが、 ずっと変わらないアイデンティティを持ち続けています。こ の「ブルガリ」ブランドのように、確固たる信念とクリエイ ティビティを持って突き進んでいくことが大事です。「イル ・リストランテ ニコ・ロミート」の料理も同じです。目指す「本

場の料理」を自分ならではの解釈で提供する、これが私のス タイルです。なので、シンプルだけれども本物で、媚びない 料理を作っていく。そういった点で 「イル・リストランテ ニコ・ロミート」は他のレストランとは異なるのです。 料理人として、指導者として、料理の創造性にインスピレー ションを与え続けているものは何ですか？ どこかからインスピレーションを得るより、自分自身に動機 づけして、そこからインスピレーションを得ています。例え ば何か賞をもらうために努力する、それは確かに成長してい く上でとても良い動機にはなります。しかし、表面的な成功 よりも大事なのは、自分自身に対する挑戦、自分に対して競 争を仕掛けること。そうやってチャレンジを重ねていくこと で、自分自身にインスピレーションを与えることができてい るのだと思います。 「素材の味を生かし、複雑さに陥ることなくシンプルに、丁 寧に作るイタリアの味」を信条とするニコ・ロミート氏。無 駄なものをそぎ落として本質に迫ろうとする、日本の「禅」 の心にも似た精神からどのような「真のイタリア料理」が生 み出されてくるのでしょう。「イル・リストランテ ニコ・ ロミート」は、今後ますます注目される存在です。

A SERENDIPITOUS CULINARY JOURNEY

"Choosing to return to Asia, and particularly Korea, was about sharing the beauty and flavors that resonate with me," Chef Anh shares. Born in Seoul and later relocating to California, Anh's career path was unexpectedly altered when he stumbled upon a culinary school, which shifted his focus from becoming a Porsche mechanic to pursuing the culinary arts.

This transformative experience was further enriched by his service in the US Army and positions at globally acclaimed Michelinstarred establishments such as The French Laundry, Benu, and Urasawa.

"My experiences across various cultures and kitchens inspired me to highlight certain ingredients and prepare them in what I believe

to be the most beautiful and delicious way."

Chef Anh’s culinary journey reached new heights in 2015 with the opening of Mosu in San Francisco, which quickly earned a Michelin star, underscoring his talent for blending his diverse cultural influences with his culinary skills. This success was followed by the launch of Mosu Seoul in 2017 and Mosu Hong Kong in 2022..

"Expressing myself through food comes naturally, whether drawing from my Korean roots or the broader palette of California," he explains. His commitment to sustainability is deeply intertwined with his ingredient selection, emphasizing the importance of ecological consciousness in his dishes.

One such example is his approach to seaweed, a common yet complex ingredient. "The flavor of seaweed varies greatly depending on its region of origin. Each type, whether from Korea, Japan, Europe, or the US, carries its own unique story and flavor profile, influenced by its local marine environment," Anh notes. This nuanced understanding allows Mosu to offer dishes that not only taste distinct but also tell a story of geographical and ecological diversity.

Despite his global acclaim, Anh remains devoted to the foundational lessons imparted by his mentors, which emphasize a profound respect for traditional ingredients coupled with a fearless pursuit of innovation. "The passion and dedication I've held from the start continue to guide every dish we create," he says. Each offering at Mosu is crafted with purpose, intended to reflect a deep reverence for the natural 119

By reinterpreting traditional Korean ingredients through an innovative lens, Anh continues to redefine the parameters of fine dining in South Korea. His approach breathes new life into time-honored flavors, blending them with modern culinary techniques to create an unparalleled dining experience.

A standout dish at Mosu, the Burdock "bark," illustrates this melding of heritage and creativity. Rooted in a beloved recipe from his mother and grandmother, this dish is thoughtfully prepared by braising burdock, then it is thinly sliced, dried, and grilled in the restaurant’s hearth oven, transforming the traditional ingredient into a modern culinary delight.
