In the heart of Europe, surrounded by the majestic nature of the Alps, lies a historic country. To its east, a nation of longstanding heritage, woven through history amidst nature and the ocean. Japan and Switzerland, sharing not a few commonalities, celebrated the 160th anniversary of their diplomatic relations with a commemorative event on February 6, in a hotel in the capital city of Bern. The celebration was attended by a number of dignitaries from the political and business worlds, including the Ambassador of Japan to Switzerland, Yoshinori Fujiyama, CEOs with connections to Switzerland, and athletes, among others. Discussions were held on the friendship and trust built over the years, and the vibrant future both countries look forward to. 雄大なアルプスの大自然に抱かれた中央ヨーロッパの歴史ある国。 自然と海洋に包まれた中で歴史をつむいできた東洋の悠久の国。 少なくない共通項を持つ日本とスイスの国交樹立 160 周年を記念 した祝賀会が 2 月 6 日、首都ベルン市内のホテルで開かれました。 祝賀会には藤山美典駐スイス日本大使をはじめ、政財界の関係者、 またスイスにゆかりのある CEO やスポーツ選手ら多数が出席。 これまでの友情と信頼、そしてバイタリティに満ちた両国の新た な未来への展望などが語られました。

BRIDGING to A NEW ERA 新たな時代への架け橋

FRIENDSHIP SINCE THE EDO PERIOD The beginnings of Japan-Switzerland exchanges date back to Japan's Edo period. Precisely 160 years before the day of the celebration, on February 6, 1864, the 14th Shogun, Tokugawa Iemochi, and representatives of the Swiss Confederation signed their first Treaty of Amity and Commerce.

During that time, there were Japanese who visited Switzerland. Following the Meiji Restoration, Japan, eager to revise unequal treaties and modernize rapidly, dispatched the Iwakura Mission to Europe. This delegation, including key figures of the new government like Okubo Toshimichi, Kido Takayoshi, and Ito Hirobumi, with Iwakura Tomomi as the ambassador plenipotentiary, visited Switzerland in June 1873, showing interest in its perpetual neutrality and the recently founded Red Cross.

Ambassador Fujiyama mentioned the Iwakura Mission, stating, "To study for Japan's modernization, they visited Switzerland and were deeply impressed by the industrial development in a country with seemingly nothing." Even during the harsh times of the past war, Switzerland provided support to Japan. Ambassador Fujiyama also mentioned, "While Japan was achieving modernization, it unfortunately entered the Second World War. During the war, Switzerland acted as Japan's protecting power, playing a very important role. This is another facet of the special bond between our two countries."

Looking for ward to the Japan International Exposition "Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai," Switzerland has announced its pavilion communication program, "Vitalit y. Swiss – What Does a Prosperous Future Look Like?" demonstrating a commitment to addressing challenges like climate change and aging society together.

Eric Nussbaumer, a member of the Swiss Social Democratic Party and President of the National Council, expressed his hopes for the future of both countries. He spoke about the opportunity for both countries, as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, to promote a rule-based international order and democratic values, and his respect for Japanese aesthetics. He emphasized that the 160-year partnership "shows the world a model of collaboration that transcends cultural and geographical distances."

日本とスイスの両国交流の始まりは、日本の江戸時代にさかのぼり ます。祝賀会が開かれた日のちょうど 160 年前の 1864 年の 2 月 6 日。第 14 代将軍、徳川家茂とスイス連邦代表との間で、最初の 修好通商条約が締結されました。

近代化を果たす一方で、残念なことに第二次世界大戦に入っていき ます。その大戦中、スイスは日本の利益代表を務め、日本にとって 非常に大事な存在でした。それも両国の特別な絆を物語る側面だと 思います」

その当時、スイスを訪れた日本人もいます。明治維新を成し遂げた後、 不平等条約の改正と近代化を急ぐ日本は、岩倉具視を特命全権大使 とし新政府要人の大久保利通や木戸孝允、伊藤博文らが加わった岩 倉使節団をヨーロッパに派遣。その途上の 1873 年 6 月、スイスも 訪れ、永世中立や創設直後の赤十字社などに関心を寄せました。

来年 4 ～ 10 月に行われる日本国際博覧会「2025 大阪・関西万博」 に向けてスイスはパビリオンのコミュニケーションプログラムに 「Vitality.Swiss（バイタリティ・ドット・スイス）」―ゆたかな未 来って？を掲げ、気候変動や高齢化社会などの諸課題に共に取り組 む姿勢を示しています。

藤山大使は、当時の岩倉使節団について触れ、こう語りました。「日 本の近代化に向けて勉強するために（使節団は）スイスを訪れ、何 もない国なのに工業が発展していることにとても感動したようです」

スイス・社会民主党の下院議員で国民議会議長を務めるエリック・ ヌスバウマー氏も両国の将来に期待を寄せました。同氏は、国連安 全保障理事会の非常任理事国である両国にルールに基づく国際秩序 と民主的価値観を促進する機会があることや、日本の美学への敬意 などを語り、160 年のパートナーシップは「文化的、地理的な隔た りを超えた連携のモデルを世界に示しています」と力を込めました。

also expressed his hopes: "We want everyone in Switzerland to enjoy Japanese food and delicious products. This time, we brought scallops from Hokkaido, sustainable Wagyu beef, and sake and beer from Fukushima. Through such opportunities, we hope to further narrow the distance between Switzerland and Japan."

Takeaki Gejo, the Principal Deputy Director at the Fukushima New Industries and Employment Promotion Office, part of the Fukushima Reconstruction Promotion Group at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, also discussed efforts to promote Japanese food culture.

Future Sports exchanges are also thriving.

Two soccer players were invited to the day's celebration.

At the celebration, presidents from breweries in the disaster-stricken areas of Fukushima Prefecture, "HOP JAPAN" from Tamura City, and "haccoba" from Minamisoma City, were invited. "They are making sake, wanting to somehow contribute to the reconstruction. We wanted to inform foreigners about Fukushima's safety and challenges. It's our first time being invited to a foreign reception, in Switzerland, for the 160th anniversary. There couldn't be a happier occasion for us to connect with people in Switzerland," they said.

Keigo Tsunemoto, playing as a defender for Servette FC in the Swiss Super League, said, "There are some differences in soccer between Switzerland and Japan, and there's a language barrier, but I've been able to live comfortably thanks to a very accommodating environment."

Ayumu Seko, another defender, currently with Grasshopper Club Zurich, said, "It's my second year in Switzerland, and I'm again impressed by how wonderful this country is. I'll do my best to perform well for the team." Swiss brands, including the globally popular "ROLEX," lead the world's watch manufacturers, significantly influencing Japanese makers. Both countries value "precision" in everything from watches to cutting-edge technology. The majestic Alps and

sacred Mount Fuji symbolize "nature," and both countries use white and red in their "national flags." There are many similarities between the two nations.

Friendship, Trust, and Creating New Vitality.

Ambassador Fujiyama also spoke about the future of both countries: "I believe the world is at a historic turning point. There are deepening divisions in many areas: between democracies versus authoritarianism, between religions, between rich countries in the West and countries and regions that are still stuck in poverty." He suggests that both countries hold the key to overcoming these divisions.

"Switzerland is a country where various multicultures are united in one country, and four different ethnic groups and languages coexist peacefully in one country. Japan, on the other hand, has built a peaceful and prosperous country out of the rubble after reflecting on the national crisis caused by its defeat in the war. I would like to promote exchanges of ideas and opinions on how we can successfully mix this wisdom and experience of Switzerland and Japan and create a world of co-existence, co-prosperity, and cooperation instead of a world of division.

日本の食文化の普及を進めていくことについ ては、経済産業省・福島新産業・雇用創出推 進室総括補佐の下條岳昭氏もこう語りました。

スポーツ分野の交流も盛んです。この日の祝 賀会には 2 人のサッカー選手も招かれていま した。

祝賀会には、2011 年 3 月に発生した東日本 大震災の被災地から、福島県田村市のブルワ リー「HOP JAPAN」、そして同県南相馬市 のブルワリー「haccoba」から社長が招かれ ていました。「（社長は）復興のために何と かしたい、とお酒を造ってくれています。福 島の安全性、チャレンジを海外の方に知って いただきたい、と考えていたのですが、今回 初めて海外（外国）のレセプションに呼んで いただいたのがスイスでした。（国交樹立） 160 周年記念ということもあり、この機会に スイスの方とつながることができれば、これ ほど幸せなことはないと思っています」

スイス・スーパーリーグ（サッカーリーグ）の 「セルヴェット FC」で DF（ディフェンダー） として活躍する常本佳吾氏は、「（スイスと日 本では）サッカーの違いが多少あり、 言葉の 壁もありますが、とても過ごしやすい環境を作 っていただき快適なサッカーライフを送れてい ます」。

ーをリードし、日本のメーカーも大きな影響 を受けてきました。腕時計、さらには最先端 テクノロジーまで、 両国はともに「正確」さ を重んじています。雄大なアルプス山脈と霊 峰富士の象徴する「自然」の風景、そして共 に白と赤の 2 色を用いた「国旗」。両国には 共通項が少なくありません。 友情、信頼、そして新たなバイタリティ、活 力の創造へ。両国の未来について藤山大使は こうも語りました。 「世界は歴史的な転換点に入っていると思い ます。民主主義対権威主義、宗教間、西側の 豊かな国といまだ貧困から抜け出せない国や 地域など、いろいろなところで分断が深まっ ています」。こうした分断を克服する鍵を、 両国が握っていると示唆します。 「スイスはいろいろなマルチカルチャーを一 つの国にまとめ、また四つの民族・言語が一 つの国で平和裏に共存し、暮らしています。 一方日本は、敗戦による国難の反省の上に立 って、瓦礫の中から平和で豊かな国を作り上 げました。このようなスイスと日本の知恵と 経験をうまく混ざり合わせ、分断から共存共 栄、協調の世界を作るにはどうすればいいか、 交流や意見交換を進めていきたい。」

ART BASEL HONG KONG Angelle Siyang-Le, the director of Art Basel Hong Kong

“Contemporary art is a universal language in today’s world that allows us to express, communicate and exchange ideas equally”, – says the director of Art Basel Hong Kong Angelle Siyang-Le, speaking of the return of Asia’s premium art fair in March. This year, Art Basel Hong Kong will take place between the 28th and 30th of March, showcasing contemporary artworks from over 200 galleries across the region and the world.

In her interview, Angelle commented on the development trajectory of contemporary art since the pandemic, discussed the role of public spaces in artistic exhibitions, and, most importantly, shared the key highlights of this year’s most grandiose art show in Asia.

アート・バーゼル香港が コロナ禍以前の規模へ 「現代アートは、私たちが等しく表現し、伝達し、アイ デアを交換できる、今日の世界における普遍的な言語で す」と、3 月にアジアで開催される豪華なアートフェア の復活についてアート・バーゼル香港のディレクター であるアンジェル・シヤン = ルー氏（Angelle SiyangLe）は言います。今年のアート・バーゼル香港は 3 月 28 日から 30 日まで開催され、地域および世界中の 200 以上のギャラリーから集められた現代アート作品 が展示されます。 インタビューの中でアンジェル氏は、パンデミック以降 の現代アートの発展の軌跡、そして芸術的展示における 公共空間の役割について語り、最も重要なこととして、 今年アジアで最も壮大なアートフェアとなるアート・バ ーゼル香港の見どころについて教えてくれました。

With the 2024 Hong Kong Art Basel approaching, could you share some highlights that attendees can look forward to this year?

We feel that the year 2024 is all about Asia reconnecting with the rest of the world since the onset of the pandemic.

It ’s t he f i r s t ye a r A s i a h a s ent i r ely r e op ene d a nd , consequently, it is the first year Art Basel returned to a fullscale show. We have 243 galleries, which means we’re back to the pre-pandemic scale, but now we actually have even more to offer.

This year, we are having one of the biggest Encounters sectors, which is the large-scale installation sector. We have 16 works on-site at the fair, 11 of them are premier works, specifically created for Art Basel Hong Kong.

We also have one of the biggest Kabinett sectors in years, w ith 33 projects for the f irst time in Ar t Basel Hong Kong. Kabinett is a sector that with a strong emphasis on historical and contemporary solo presentations from Asia.

It represents a unique booth system, galleries that apply for the Kabinett sector build a booth within their booth to highlight a project that the gallery is promoting this year.

We are also very excited to have 26 Japanese galleries taking part this year, which make up 10 percent of the show. Two of them are brand-new to the Art Basel Hong Kong show. The first one is the √K Contemporary which is bringing famous Japanese calligraphy ar tists, like Nankoku Hidai, and another one is a young gallery called WAITING ROOM which we feel is one of the up-andcoming rising stars from Japan.

What would be some of the important themes of this year’s show?

This time, we are having a lot of new opportunities to really re-engage with questions that arose in the aftermath of the pandemic, which was when people’s mindsets truly shifted. Now, we treat the new normal with a new mindset, and we can really see it from this year’s presentations, from all these galleries coming back together.

Another new thing is that we are also trying to bring art into the city, not just the conventional art centres, and really engage with the citizens. So, we’re once again collaborating with M+ which is co-commissioning the works of Yang Fudong, an internationally acclaimed Chinese artist. The exciting thing we’re doing with them is shooting a film for the M+ façade in the traditional blackand-white Hong Kong style of the 1970s and 1990s. The film will be playing during the fair on a loop, and people from across the harbour, and even from Victoria Peak, will be able to see the artworks featured in it. This way, we’re trying to bring this public art element into the cityscape, so that people can really embark on the art journey during the week of the fair.

2024 年のアート・バーゼル香港が近づいていますが、参 加者が期待できる今年の見どころを教えてください。 2024 年は、パンデミック以来、アジアが世界の他の地域 と再び繋がる年になると感じています。今年は、アジアが 完全に再開した最初の年、つまりアート・バーゼルが本格 的な規模で復活した最初の年でもあります。今回は 243 の ギャラリーが参加する予定なので、以前の規模に戻ったと 言えますが、実際にはさらに多くのギャラリーが参加する と思います。 今年は、大規模な作品に特化したキュレーション部門「エ ンカウンターズ（Encounters）」も最大級の規模で設置さ れています。そこでは 16 点の作品が展示され、うち 11 作 品はアート・バーゼル香港のために特別に制作されたプレ ミア作品です。 また、アート・バーゼル香港で初めて設置されるキュレー ションやテーマ別のプレゼンテーションに特化した「カビ ネット ( 独 Kabinett 英 Cabinet)」部門も、史上最大規模 で行われます。「カビネット」では、アジアの歴史と現代 における個展に重点を置き、33 のプロジェクトが展示され ることになっており、「カビネット」に応募したギャラリ ーは、ブースの中に各々のブースを設置し、そのギャラリ ーが今年推進しているプロジェクトを紹介するというユニ ークなブースシステムを採用します。 また、今年は日本から 26 のギャラリーが参加し、その数 は全体の 10％を占めます。その中には、アート・バーゼル 香港に初めて参加するギャラリーも 2 つ含まれています。 比田井南谷氏をはじめとした日本の著名な書道家を紹介す る√ K Contemporary（ルート K コンテンポラリー）、そ して、WAITING ROOM という新進気鋭の若いギャラリー です。このギャラリーは、日本からの有望な新星の一つだ と感じています。 今回の展覧会で重要なテーマは何でしょうか？ 今回は、パンデミックの影響で生じた数々の疑問に、もう 一度向き合う新しい機会であると思っています。あの時期 は、人々の考え方が大きく変化した時でもありましたが、 今、私たちは新しい物の見方でニューノーマルを生きてい ます。今年、ギャラリーが一堂に会し、会場に並べられた 作品を目にすることで、そのことを実感できるでしょう。 もう一つ新しいことは、従来のアートセンターだけでな く、アートを街に持ち込み、市民と深く関わり合おうと試 みていることです。そこで、今回も国際的に高く評価され ている中国人アーティスト、楊福東 (Yang Fudong) の作 品を共同委嘱している M+ と再びコラボレーションするこ とにしました。M+ が設置するファザードに投影するため、 1970 年代から 1990 年代の香港スタイルのフィルムを伝 統的なモノクロ映像で撮影することも楽しみな仕事のひと つです。このフィルムはフェアの期間中、繰り返し再生さ れ、港の向こう側、さらにはビクトリア・ピークからも、 ファザードに投影される作品を見ることができます。この ように、パブリック・アートの要素を街の景観に取り入れ ることで、本アートフェアの期間中、人々がアートの旅に 乗り出せるような試みを行います。

Digital art plays a very important role in today's art scene. How does it take part in Hong Kong Art Basel as well?

In 2024, the meaning of digital is expanding. Through Covid-19, we’ve been learning a lot about the domain of digital art, about NFTs, about all sorts of AI-generated artworks. I think digital art is definitely becoming one of the very important media in the art world. It will not go away.

But we feel that the in-person engagement and the connection even with this digital age is not going to go away because people still like to view digital art in person.

They like to be physically present in an exhibition to see digital works to really experience the impact of art first-hand.

Sustainability in the art world is a pressing concern. Are there any initiatives or practices Art Basel Hong Kong is implementing to address this issue?

At Art Basel, we encourage our own teams, our suppliers, our vendors and our participants to be more eco-friendly. At the same time, as a global brand, Art Basel is also investing and engaging in longterm sustainability projects. For instance, this year, the fair runs a collaboration with Parley for the Oceans, unveiled last year at Art Basel Miami Beach. Fostering collaboration within and beyond the art world, Parley works with artists and galleries to raise awareness for the beauty and fragility of the oceans and help end their destruction.

The Asian art market has seen significant growth, with new art fairs emerging across the region. How does Hong Kong Art Basel distinguish itself within this competitive landscape?

We see a growing number of goodquality fairs in Asia, which is a good sign for the region, especially if you look at Europe or America where one can find multiple international art fairs. We feel that more international fairs in Asia will signify that Asia’s contemporary art scene continues growing. So, for us, it is a healthy encouragement to keep raising awareness of modern and contemporary art.

Documentary “Dahomey” Wins the Golden Bear Award 第 74 回ベルリン国際映画祭 : ドキュメンタリー映画『Dahomey』が金熊賞に輝く

The 74th Berlin International Film Festival, one of the three major film festivals in the world, opened on February 15th. The awards ceremony was held on the 24th. During the 11-day period, approximately 240 films were screened in categories including feature films, short films, documentaries, and independent films, with 20 films competing for the top prize, the Golden Bear Award. Reflecting the current diversity of society, entries came from a variety of backgrounds. The Golden Bear Award was won by "Dahomey" (original title), a documentary

by Mati Diop, a French female director with Senegalese roots. The film follows the process of returning 26 cultural artifacts that were looted by France from the once-existing Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa and stored in a museum in Paris, back to the Republic of Benin. The documentary explores whether it is a joy or anger to see a culture lost during the colonial era return after a century, and discusses the feasibility of cultural recovery through debates among Beninese students, using the monologue of a statue as a narrative device.

There's a growing international movement demanding the return of cultural properties looted during the colonial era, which are now in European museums. Director Mati Diop claims, "The Paris museum has over 7,000 looted art pieces, but only 26 have been returned." The "Silver Bear Jury Grand Prize," equivalent to the Grand Prix, was awarded to "A Traveler's Needs" by South Korean director Hong Sang-soo. This is his third collaboration with French cinema legend Isabelle Huppert, who plays a slightly mysterious character from France teaching French to Koreans while enjoying Makgeolli. Hong had won the same award in 2022, making him a regular at the Berlin Film Festival.

The Best Director Award was given to Nelson Carlos de Los Santos Arias from the Dominican Republic. "Pepe" is an unusual story told through the monologue of a hippopotamus brought from Africa to Colombia by a drug lord for his private zoo.

Although it appears humorous, it satirizes human folly, cruelty, colonial issues, and the relationship with nature.

Sebastian Stan won the Best Leading Performance for his role in "A Different Man," portraying an actor who undergoes facial plastic surgery to start his life anew and struggles with his mental balance when he has to play his past self on stage. Emily Watson won the Best Supporting Performance Award for her role as the head of a convent that abuses young women in the festival's opening film, "Small Things Like These."

Among the non-competition entries, "No Other Land" garnered attention as the Berlinale Documentary Award winner. Produced by a joint Israeli-Palestinian team, this documentary calmly observes the process of Palestinians being displaced and homes being destroyed in the West Bank area occupied by Israel. Palestinian Basel Adra and Israeli Yuval Abraham, who co-directed the film, took the stage at the awards ceremony and strongly called for equality between Israelis and Palestinians and a ceasefire in Gaza.

UBER'S PARTNERSHIP WITH BERLINALE 2024 A Blend of Sustainability and Glamour Uber とベルリン国際映画祭 2024 のパートナーシップ：持続可能性と魅力の融合 The partnership with the Berlinale marked a significant milestone for Uber. The collaboration was born out of a desire to showcase Uber's role in urban mobility and to change public perceptions.

Last year, Uber introduced a unique shuttle service featuring hydrogen-powered cars, aligning with the festival's sustainability goals. The success of this initiative led to its continuation this year, with the addition of 100% electric vehicles to the fleet.

One of the highlights of this year's partnership is Uber Glam, an innovative concept that brings a touch of glamour to everyday rides. In collaboration with Armani Beauty, a principal partner of the Berlinale, Uber transformed a luxury vehicle into a mobile makeup studio, offering passengers a chance to experience the VIP treatment. Froehlich elaborated on the concept, saying, "The main idea is that when you book this service, you can enjoy a moment of feeling like a star, which is a very positive experience."

What Does Sustainability for Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan, is renowned for its current exhibition attempting to raise awareness about climate change and sustainability through relevant conversations surrounding the topics of contemporary art and museum culture. Since 2020, the world has been swept in a series of global events, starting with the COVID-19 pandemic, that altered the work of art institutions, possibly, forever, calling for new, more sustainable ways of operating.

Commemorating the 20th anniversary of Mori Art Museum in 2023, a symposium under the name “What Does Sustainability Mean for Museums?” took place at the institution, inviting the members of its International Advisory Committee, who are directors of the influential art museum from different part of the world and Mori’s directors to date to tackle complex issues and challenges that lay ahead of the industry. The discussion, moderated by the current director of Mori Art Museum, Kataoka Mami, was attended by Director of Museum of Modern Art in New York, Glenn D. She added that this was “an issue that all museums around the world are facing in the postpandemic era, and the global museum community as a whole should start sharing certain common guidelines to continue promoting the value of art to the public.”

“Today, each museum must digest and analyse the political, economic, social and cultural histories of each respective region, and how to share it with diverse audiences,” – she said. “We also need to consider how we can contribute to global issues from our own local standpoint. The director of one of the world’s most recognised museums, Glenn Lowry, has said in the discussion that, given the prominence of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the institution sees as its mission to set an example for other art museums and galleries around the world when it comes to sustainability. “I think that, because we are recognised around the world as a leading institution, the way we do things influences the ways other institutions do things,” – he noted.

Among the efforts to make MoMA a more sustainable institution mentioned by Lowry was the establishment in 2020 of The Emilio Ambasz Institute for the Joint Study of the Built and the Natural Environment, dedicated to the research of the relationship between architecture and environment to produce public knowledge. At the moment, the museum is running an exhibition called Emerging Ecologies: Architecture and the Rise of Environmentalism, the focus of which are the specific ways in 世界で最も有名な美術館のひとつであるニューヨーク近代美術館 （MoMA）のグレン・D・ラウリィ（Glenn D. Moreover, MoMA actively works towards reducing its carbon footprint by implementing a more careful approach to resources. “We recycle all of the materials we use for exhibitions,” – Lowry explained. “We have been finding new ways to use less electricity, less steam, less natural gas. It is a whole approach that starts with everything we do and then tries to do it even better”.

The Art Gallery of South Australia is currently 142 years old, making it one of the oldest and most respected museums in the county. Rhana Devenport mentions that the gallery emerged at “the time of great ambition within South Australia” as the country then sought a new cultural identity as a free state.

Today, as the gallery has succeeded in building an outstanding art collection over the course several decades, its curators shifted focus towards Australian contemporary artists, creating platforms for their voices to be heard. A s the Museum Director of M+, the A sia’s f irst globa l museum of visual culture since 2016, Suhanya Raffel has played a crucial role in the major transformation of Hong Kong into an international arts and culture hub. According to Eugene Tan, the ar t of Singapore and Southeast Asia in general remains very much under-researched, prompting National Gallery Singapore to make it its mission to promote the art histories of the region and to highlight its complexities and diversity of artists and artistic expressions. The museum conducts crucial research into the ar t of the region, which informs the development of its collections and exhibitions as well as other curatorial programmes.

“While contemporary art emerges largely from specific local contexts and conditions, it nevertheless has very strong dialogues with art from other parts of the world because of the extensive communication channels that we now have globally,” – he elaborated.

For Tan, contemporary art appears as an important communication medium that has the power to shape the future, through its worldmaking nature. Challenging the Reconstruction of History and Tradition: "Takashi Murakami Mononoke in Kyoto" 歴史と伝統の再構築に挑む『村上隆 もののけ 京都』 From February 3 to September 1, 2024, the "Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto" exhibition is being held at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. This exhibition, held as part of the 90th-anniversary celebration of the Kyoto City Museum of Art, is Murakami's first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan in about eight years and his first outside of Tokyo.

Approximately 90% of the 170 exhibited works are new, and the exhibition also attempts unprecedented challenges, such as raising funds through hometown tax donations to Kyoto City. We spoke with Jun Aoki, director of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, about the highlights of the exhibition and the museum's intentions.

2024 年 2 月 3 日から 9 月 1 日にかけて、京都市京セラ美術館で『村上隆 もののけ 京都』 が開催されています。京都市美術館の開館 90 周年記念展として開催された本展は、村 上氏にとっては日本で約 8 年ぶり、東京都以外では初めての大規模個展。約 170 点に 及ぶ展示物の 9 割ほどが新作という構成に加え、京都市へのふるさと納税で資金を集め るなど異例の挑戦も試みています。京都市京セラ美術館の館長を務める青木淳氏に、展 覧会の見どころや美術館側の想いなどを伺いました。

Expressing Kyoto's City, Culture, Kyoto, the stage for "Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto," is a city where the achievements of Edo period painters, in whom Murakami has an interest, are still preserved and cherished. The exhibition features works by Murakami that interpret, quote, and reconstruct the masterpieces of painters active in this region.

The exhibition, which includes works making their domestic debut and newly written large-scale pieces, is spread over six chapters, allowing visitors to fully enjoy Murakami's journey and worldview.

In the first chapter, visitors are greeted by a 13-meter-long masterpiece, "RakuchūRakugai-zu Byōbu: Iwasa Matabei RIP," which references "Rakuchu Rakugai Zu." The model for this work is known as the “Rakuchu Rakugai Zu Byobu” or “Scenes In and Around Kyoto” (Funaki Version) by Iwasa Matabei. Murakami has remade it nearly three times larger, depicting the liveliness of Kyoto while incorporating his original characters.

In the second chapter titled "Four Symbols and Hexagonal Double-Helix Tower," Murakami expresses Heiankyo in his unique style. Heiankyo was considered an ideal land protected by four deities (mythological creatures) such as the Blue Dragon of the East, the Vermilion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West, and the Black Tortoise of the North in the four cardinal directions. New works featuring these deities are arranged to correspond with the cardinal directions. In the center stands " Hexagonal Double-Helix Tower (Rokkaku Rasendo)," inspired

by Rokkakudo, which was said to have a function to alert the capital of disasters.

The walls and floors are covered with skulls, creating a space that feels as if it is overrun by "mononoke."

The third chaprepresentativeter, " DOB’s Journey," centers around Murakami's character "DOB." The theme is "Superflat," which connects traditional Japanese painting expressions with contemporary anime and games. This chapter features works from the character's early appearances to the latest, showcasing Murakami's thoughts and experiments on Superflat.

『村上隆 もののけ 京都』の舞台となる京都市は、村上氏が関心を寄せる江戸時代の絵師た ちの活躍が今なお残り、大切にされている街です。展覧会には、この地で活躍した絵師た ちの傑作を解釈・引用・再構築した村上氏の作品が並びます。国内初公開の作品や書き下 ろしの大作などが 6 章にわたって展示されており、村上氏の歩みと世界観を堪能できるで しょう。 第 1 章では、『洛中洛外図』を引用した、全長 13m にもおよぶ大作『洛中洛外図 岩佐 又兵衛 rip』が来場者を迎えます。モデルとなっているのは、岩佐又兵衛『洛中洛外図屏 風（舟木本）』と呼ばれる作品。村上氏はこれを 3 倍程度の大きさでリメイクし、オリ ジナルのキャラクターも交えながら京都の賑わいを描いています。 「四神と六角螺旋堂」と題した第 2 章では、村上氏ならではのテイストで平安京を表現。 平安京は、東西南北を青龍・白虎・朱雀・玄武といった神獣が護る理想郷だと考えられて いました。この神獣たちをモチーフにした新作が、東西南北の方角に一致するように配さ れています。中央にそびえるのは、都の災厄を知らせる機能があったとされる六角堂をモ チーフとした『六角螺旋堂』。壁や床はドクロで覆われ、「もののけ」が跋扈するような 不気味さも感じられる空間となっています。 第 3 章は、村上氏の代表的なキャラクター『DOB』を中心とした「DOB 往還記」。日本 の伝統的な絵画表現と、現代のアニメ・ゲームを結んだ「スーパーフラット」が主題とな っています。キャラクターが登場した初期の作品から最新作までが並び、スーパーフラッ トに対する村上氏の思考や試みが見て取れる章です。

The fourth chapter, "Wind God and Thunder God Wonderland," hints at challenges to renowned Edo period painters such as Tawaraya Sotatsu, Ogata Korin, and Soga Shohaku. Among them, Murakami's reinterpretation of the famous " Wind God and Thunder God" depicts comical and cute deities, suggesting changes in the modern image of "mononoke."

The fifth chapter, "Tales of Mononoke Play," introduces Murakami's latest trends. Visitors can see a part of Murakami's diverse activities, such as trading card production and collaboration projects with fashion brands. The meticulously crafted flat works, rewritten as paintings from digital images, are a must-see.

The final chapter, "Gozan-kun and the Chronicles of the Ancient Capital," features works displayed in a gold-colored space. The main focus is on works unique to Kyoto, such as maiko and the Gozan no Okuribi. The original drawing of "2020 The Name Succession of Ichikawa Danjūrō XIII, Hakuen, Kabuki Jūhachiban " is also exhibited, impressing the fusion of traditional Kyoto culture and Murakami's works.

第 4 章は「風神雷神ワンダーランド」。俵屋宗達・尾形光琳 ・曾我蕭白といった江戸時代の名だたる絵師たちへの挑戦が うかがえます。なかでも有名な『風神雷神図』を村上氏が再 解釈した作品では、コミカルで可愛らしい神様が描かれ、現 代の「もののけ」に対するイメージの変化を示唆しています。 第 5 章は、村上氏の最新トレンドを紹介する「もののけ遊戯譚」 です。トレーディングカードの制作や、ファッションブラン ドとのコラボレーションプロジェクトなど、村上氏の幅広い 活動の一端を見ることができます。デジタルイメージを絵画 として書き直した、技巧の凝らされた平面作品は必見です。 そして最終章となる第 6 章「五山くんと古都歳時記」では、 金色に彩られた空間に作品が並びます。舞妓さんや五山の送 り火を題材にした、京都ならではの作品がメインです。祝幕 として描かれた『2020 十三代目市川團十郎白猿 襲名十八番』 の原画も展示され、伝統的な京文化と村上氏の作品との融合 を印象づける章となっています。

Jun Aoki on the Significance of Architect Jun Aoki, who worked on the renovation of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art and has served as its director since 2019, believes there is significance in holding Murakami's solo exhibition in Kyoto.

"Murakami's concept of Superflat originates from Edo period art. Especially, the center of Edo period art was not Tokyo but Kyoto. That's probably where Murakami's starting point lies. He set the theme for this exhibition as 'Let's reconnect Edo period art with the modern era in Kyoto once again.'"

Moreover, "mononoke," including skulls, appear in various places in the exhibition's works.

This theme also seems related to Kyoto.

"In the past, people believed in 'mononoke' and thought there were bad spiritual entities. In old Kyoto, a culture was rooted where something invisible like 'mononoke' was always present in everyday life. Murakami has recreated that in this exhibition."

For example, the Wind God and Thunder God depicted in "Wind God" and "Thunder God" were considered the masters of "mononoke" that brought bad things like wind and thunder to Kyoto. The way these motifs are comically expressed by Murakami is one of the highlights.

"Even though they are both 'mononoke,' the 'mononoke' that people in Kyoto during the Edo period thought of and the 'mononoke' of the modern era have undergone significant changes.

The group of works that convey such changes is very interesting."

Through the exhibition, which glimpses the attempt to "recreate the old concept of Kyoto in the modern era," Aoki expects it to influence the way people think about art.

"The concept of Superflat that the city of Kyoto itself had in the Edo period is close to subculture. In that sense, I expect it to be seen as rethinking or reconstructing the relationship between subculture and contemporary art."

京都市京セラ美術館のリノベーションを手掛け、2019 年から は同館の館長も務める建築家の青木淳氏。京都での村上氏の 個展開催には、意義があると考えています。 「村上さんの言っているスーパーフラットは、出発点が江戸時代 の美術。特に江戸時代の美術の中心は東京ではなく京都なん です。 その京都の美術に、恐らく村上さんの出発点があるんです。 その彼が、 『京都でもう 1 度、江戸時代の美術と現代を繋げて みよう』と今回のテーマを掲げたのが始まりです」

例えば『風神図』『雷神図』に描かれる風神や雷神も、京都に 風や雷といった悪いことをもたらす「もののけ」の主人のような もの。そうしたモチーフの数々が、村上氏によってコミカルに表 現されている点が見どころのひとつです。 「同じもののけでも、江戸時代に京都の人たちが思っていたも ののけと、現代のもののけはずいぶん変化を遂げました。それ を感じさせるような作品群で、どれも非常に面白いです」

また、本展の作品にはドクロをはじめとした「もののけ」が所々 に登場しています。 このテーマも、 京都に関連するもののようです。

「京都の昔のコンセプトを現代に持ってきてもう1回作り直す」 という試みも垣間見える展覧会を通し、青木氏は美術への考え 方にも影響を与えるのではないかと期待を示します。

「昔の人は『もののけ』がいるからと信じて、そこに悪いスピリ チュアル的なものがあると思っていました。なので京都の昔の 生活には、いつも『もののけ』のような目には見えない何かが生 活の中にいるという文化が根付いていたんです。 それをもう1度、 村上さんが再現したのが今回の展覧会です」

「京都の街自体が持っている、言ってみれば江戸時代にあった スーパーフラットは、サブカルチャーと近い存在です。そういう 意味では、サブカルチャーと現代アートとの関係性を考え直す ような、あるいは再構成しているように見えるのではないかと 期待しています」

The exhibition also garnered attention for utilizing the hometown tax system to raise funds. The initiative began due to a budget shortfall for borrowing and transporting works by Murakami, who is active overseas, from collectors worldwide.

This is a challenge not only for the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art but also for many public museums in Japan.

Therefore, Murakami teamed up with Kyoto City to utilize individual hometown tax donations with return gifts such as original trading cards and exhibition invitation tickets, as well as the corporate version of hometown tax donations available until fiscal year 2024. As a result, the museum was able to secure revenue equivalent to about 30,000 admission tickets before the opening, and university students and younger residents or students in Kyoto City can enter the exhibition for free. This initiative is similar to the way overseas museums are supported by corporate and individual donations.

"It's about supporting what a certain museum is doing or what a certain artist is doing. Instead of leaving it to the government or local authorities to pay taxes, you can decide with your own will.

I think this could be a starting point for individuals in Japan to be able to support their favorite people or institutions more."

"Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto" has attracted attention from various aspects. With a long exhibition period from February to September, Director Aoki mentions that the changing exhibits along with the seasons are also appealing.

"Sakura blooms in Japan from the end of March to the beginning of April. After that, the decorations at this museum will change along with the seasons from spring to summer. Currently, she excels as the Head of Editorial Content of Hearst Fujingaho's "Richesse" and "Esquire The Big Black Book." What led you to the publishing industry, and what were your first steps?

I majored in journalism at Sophia University in Tokyo, aspiring to become an editor. When deciding my career path, my love for magazines and fashion led me to consider several fashion magazines before joining Fujingaho (now Hearst Fujingaho).

My editing career began with "25ans," a magazine with a long history and a sister publication to "Richesse," which I launched 12 years ago.

young girls, which was a different market from "25ans." It felt like starting from zero, even within the same company, and was a period full of learning.

How do you perceive the importance of social contribution through media?

My mission is to continuously create highquality media, which is my top priority.

Over 30 years of involvement in high-end media targeting the luxury market for women, I've come to believe that those who are well-off should help those in need.

For example, the United States has many fundraising parties. By hosting charity galas, our media can create demand for attendees, our readers, to wear high-end

brands of dresses and jewelry. This also benefits the brands that support our media.

About 15 years ago, "25ans" started hosting at least one charity gala annually, donating to organizations like UNICEF, WFP, and Save the Children. Participants get the chance to dress up and practice social culture, while also learning about the supported organizations. Our readers are active, and they have expanded the charity network.

The term "noblesse oblige" exists. Now, there's a voice saying that successful, affluent people should engage in such actions. This is how the media "Richesse" was named.

出版業界へ進まれたきっかけ、最初のステップは。 東京の上智大学でジャーナリズムを専攻し、エ ディターになりたい、という希望がありまし た。進路を決める際に、元々雑誌やファッショ ンが大好きだったことから、数あるファッシ ョンマガジンの中でいくつか考え、婦人画報 社 ( 現ハースト婦人画報社 ) に入社しました。 『Richesse』という私が 12 年前にローンチし た雑誌の姉妹誌にあたる、とても長い歴史のあ る雑誌『25ans』に携わったのが編集者人生の 始まりです。 編集長の経験は、どのように自己成長に影響さ れましたか？ 31 歳のときに、『mc Sister』（現在休刊）とい うヤングガール向けの雑誌で初めて編集長を任 されました。 『25ans』とはマーケットも異なり、 同じ会社だけれど新しい会社に入ったような、

メディアを通じた社会貢献の重要性をどのよう に認識されていますか。 私のミッションはハイクオリティなメディアを 作り続けること。それが最も優先順位が高いで す。主に女性のラグジュアリーマーケットを対 象とするハイエンド・メディアに 30 年以上携 わっていくなかで、余裕のある人たちこそ困っ ている人たちを助けることができるのではない かと考えるようになりました。

15 年ほど前から、『25ans』では最低でも 1 年に一度、チャリティガラを行い、ユニセフや WFP、セーブザチルドレンなどに寄付をしてき ました。参加者たちはドレスアップをして社交 文化を実践する機会を得ることができ、かつ寄 付することで支援団体の存在を知る機会にもな ります。読者の方々はアクティブな方が多いの で、今度は彼女たちが主体となってチャリティ の輪が広がっていきました。

VISIONARY What do you think is most important for the future of the publishing industry?

At Hearst Fujingaho, we no longer call ourselves a publishing company but a multimedia company. Our revenue growth comes from not just publishing but also digital, e-commerce, and data business.

Opportunity and Treatment between Men and Women in Employment was enacted in 1986, my first year as a working adult. Although our company, targeting female readers, had many female employees, all editors-in-chief were men when I joined. I thought I would never become one.

As we enter the era of AI, what's most important is creation, ideas. While we leave what AI can do to AI, it's crucial to focus on creating things that make humans feel comfortable and happy. Sensitivity unique to humans will become increasingly important.

When I attended Paris Fashion Week, the editors-in-chief of famous international media like "VOGUE," "ELLE," "Marie Claire," and "Harper's BAZAAR" were all women.

Three or four years later, I was appointed editor-in-chief of "mc Sister." It was a surprise to both myself and others.

If I had joined the company five years earlier or later, I wouldn't have become an editorin-chief. I felt grateful and saw it as my "mission" to contribute to the women who would follow.

ましたが、そのとき 私は社会人 1 年生 でした。当社は女性 読者を対象としたメ ディアが多く、元々 女性社員が多かった のですが、それでも 私が入ったときは編集長は全員男性でした。だから私も編 集長にはなれないだろう、と思っていました。 パリのファッションウィークに行ったときに、有名な海外 のメディア、 『VOGUE』 『ELLE』 『Marie Claire』 『Harper's BAZAAR』等の編集長たちがフロントロウに並んでいた のですが、全員が女性だったんです。 それから 3、4 年後、私は『mc Sister』の編集長を任さ れました。誰がびっくりしたって私自身がびっくり、周り の人たちも驚きました。入社するのが 5 年早かったら今は ないし、5 年遅くても編集長にはなっていなかったでしょ う。神様ありがとうございます、と思いましたし、自分が 女性編集長のパイオニアとなって、その後に続く女性のた めに貢献したいという「ミッション」を感じています。

VOICES What has been the most influential event in your career so far?

I was headhunted for the launch of "VOGUE NIPPON" in 1999. Being involved in the creation of the Japanese edition of "VOGUE" was a significant event in my career. Creating a media in Japanese for Japanese readers, half of our staff, including the art director, were foreigners.

There were times when what foreigners thought of "Japan" did not match what Japanese readers wanted. Looking back, I believe they had their admiration, interest, and respect for Japan, but it took a lot of energy to find expressions satisfying both sides.

Including tough experiences, I believe the new experiences I had when I was young have led to my current self.

As the Editor-in-Chief of "Esquire The Big Black Book," can you share your future projects and goals?

Working in women's media throughout my career, this is my first time creating men's media, but I have always loved "Esquire."

Its socially aware and journalistic content transcends the barriers of men's and women's, proposing high culture to humans. The world, including fashion, is becoming genderless and borderless. I feel like I am creating not from a woman's perspective but as an individual.

I think daily about the role of men's media today and how to shape "Esquire" in Japan, aiming to interview people who could become the new generation's iconic figures in Japan.

Hiromi Sogo is a pioneer who has innovatively elevated the status of women in the publishing industry with her exceptional vision and passion. Her illustrious career has expanded the possibilities for women in journalism, serving as a role model for many. Her success as an Head of Editorial Content goes beyond merely creating magazines, enhancing social consciousness, and shaping cultural trends.

Creating not as a woman but as a person これまでのキャリアを通じて最も影響を受けた出来事は ?

M i k a N i n a g aw a i s t he d a u g ht er o f Yu k io Nina gawa , a director known for works like "NINAGAWA Macbeth." Her mother, originally an actress, is now active as a quilt artist, so creativity has been a part of Ninagawa's life from an early age.

I always wanted to be someone who expresses something from a young age," says Ninagawa, w ho s p e n t h e r c h i l d ho o d s u r r ou n d e d b y various books and paintings. It was during her elementary school years that she became captivated by photography.

"Since elementary school, I was doing things like creating my own world and taking pictures, not just taking commemorative photos. I started taking pictures with a compact camera at home around the fifth grade of elementary school."

Ninagawa's unique worldview seems to have

begun to sprout since her elementary school days. Even in high school, when she began studying to enter art school with the aim of becoming a creator, her passion for photography never cooled. " I w a nt e d my ow n c a mer a , s o I s ave d my a l lowa nce a nd bou ght a sin gle -len s ref lex camera. From there, I kept taking pictures.

Although my major in university was graphic design, I became more and more immersed in photography while attending the graphic design department."

Dur ing her universit y yea rs, she ex hibited at contests known as gateways for emerging phot o g r a pher s , s uch a s t he " Gr a ph ic A r t Hitotsubo Exhibition" and "New Cosmos of Photography," winning both the Grand Prix and the Excellence Award, and made a brilliant debut as a young photographer.

BORN TO CREATIVE PARENTS クリエイティブな両親の元に生まれて

『NINAGAWA・マクベス』などで知られる演 出家、蜷川幸雄氏を父に持つ蜷川氏。母親も元々 は女優で現在はキルト作家として活動している ということで、物心がつく前からクリエイティ ブなことは身近にあったそうです。

蜷川氏の独自の世界観は、小学生のころから芽 生え始めていたようです。クリエイターを目指 し、美大へ入るための勉強を始めた高校時代も、 写真への熱が冷めることはありませんでした。

「小さいときから何か表現する人間になりたい と思っていた」と語る蜷川氏は、幼少期にさま ざまな本や絵に触れて過ごしていたそうです。 そんな中、小学生の時に出会った写真に心を奪 われたと言います。

「自分のカメラが欲しいと思って、自分のお小 遣いを貯めて一眼レフを買ったんです。そこか ら写真をずっと撮っていました。大学の専攻は グラフィックデザイン科でしたが、グラフィッ クデザイン科に通いながらどんどん写真にのめ り込んでいきました」

「小学生のときから、所謂記念写真ではなく、 自分で世界を作って撮影するようなことをやっ ていました。小学校 5 年生ぐらいのときに家に あったコンパクトカメラで撮り始めました」

大学在学中に、新人写真家の登竜門と言われる コンテスト、「ひとつぼ展」や「写真新世紀」 へ出展。それぞれグランプリと優秀賞を獲得し、 若手写真家として華々しくデビューしました。

Ninagawa's photos have consistently featured beautiful colors from her debut to the present.

Surprisingly, the vivid photos are taken without lighting or color editing, capturing "just what's in front of me."

"When you look at the world with that mindset, there are many beautiful things, and there are many sparkling moments in everyday landscapes, so I just kept collecting them, and that's how I arrived at my current style."

Nina gawa's creed i s t hat " t he re a re m a ny interesting things even in things that people don't usually turn their attention to in everyday life." The photos with strikingly vivid colors are snapshots of everyday life captured by Ninagawa. She often chooses familiar places such as parks and flower beds in Tokyo as shooting locations.

"Rather than going somewhere far away to capture a scene no one has ever seen, I find that there are many interesting moments and wonderful things to discover in my own living area when I look at it with a new perspective. This has become the core of my expression."

From Ninagawa's words, one can sense not only her keen observational skills but also her sincere attitude toward facing the world and art in a down-to-earth manner. Her family's presence also seems to influence her stance and unique sense of color.

"As for my father, he was a person who lived his life just to create things, working from morning to night. On the other hand, my mother's style of expressing her emotions through color is very similar to my work."

INHERITED SENSE OF COLOR AND ATTITUDE TOWARD CREATION 家族から受け継いだ色彩感覚と創作への姿勢

蜷川さんの撮る写真は、デビューしてから現在 に至るまで一貫して、美しい色彩が特徴的で す。驚くべきことに、目を見張るほど色鮮やか な写真の数々は、ライティングや色の編集をせ ず「目の前にあるものをただ撮ってるだけ」な んだとか。 「その気になって世界を見つめると、美しいも のはたくさんあるし、日常の何気ない風景の中 にきらめくような瞬間ってたくさんあるので、 そこをとにかくどんどん拾い集めていたら今の スタイルに辿り着きました」 「日常の中に溢れているあまり人が振り向か ないようなことの中にも面白いことがたくさ んある」というのが、蜷川さんの信条です。 引き込まれそうなほど鮮烈な色の写真も、蜷 川さんが切り取った日常の一コマ。撮影場所 も、都内の公園や花壇など身近な場所を選ぶ

ことがよくあるそうです。 「どこかすごい遠いところに行って、誰も見たこ ともない景色を撮るというよりは、自分の生活圏 内にある面白い瞬間だったり、新しい価値観で自 分の身の回りを見ると、面白いことや素晴らしい ことがたくさん発見できるんです。これが私の表 現の核になっているような気がします」 蜷川さんの言葉からは、鋭い観察眼だけでなく、 等身大で世界やアートと向き合う真摯な姿勢を 感じさせます。こうしたスタンスや独自の色彩 感覚には、家族の存在も影響しているようです。 「父親に関しては、朝から晩までモノづくりを していて、モノを作るためだけに人生を生きて いるような人でした。一方で、母親は私の作品 と本当に色味が近くて、自分の感情を色を通し て表現するスタイルが似ています」

BELIEVING IN WHAT YOU LOVE

自分の「好き」を信じて

"When it comes to big projects like movies, there are many people involved, and I have to verbalize my personal feelings and communicate them to others, so it's always difficult to move forward while believing in what I love without being influenced by the scale."

「映画のように大きな企画になっていくと、関わる人数も 多く、自分が個人的に感じている感情を言語化して人に伝 えていくことになるので、規模に影響されずに、自分が好 きなことはこれなんだって信じながら前に進むのは難しい ことだといつも思っています」

As a result of continuing to "stick to what I believe and love," "Sakuran" received international acclaim and was officially selected for the 57th Berlin International Film Festival and the 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival. During this period, Ninagawa also held numerous exhibitions overseas as a photographer. She reflects on how the reactions to her movies and photos were different in Japan and abroad.

「自分が信じて好きだと思うことを貫き通す」というこ とを続けた結果、『さくらん』は世界的な評価を受け、 第 57 回ベルリン国際映画祭・第 31 回香港国際映画祭に 正式出品されました。この時期は、写真家としても海外 での展覧会を数多く開催。映画と写真のどちらも、日本 と海外ではリアクションが違うことが新鮮だったと振り 返ります。

"It's very fair and interesting to see how much you can captivate people with your expression. For example, in movies, parts that didn't get a reaction in Japan were appreciated, and in photography, it's always a learning experience to see how the perception differs from country to country."

「どれだけ自分の表現で人々を魅了できるかっていうとこ ろがすごくフェアで面白いなと思っていて、例えば映画で も日本では反応がなかった部分が評価されたり、写真でも、 これがそんなにこの国だと評価されるんだとか、感じ方が 国によって違うのですごくいつも勉強になりますね」

VIEWING THE WORLD FROM "THE PERSPECTIVE OF LEAVING THIS WORLD"

「この世を去る視点」 で見た世界

Since the release of "Sakuran" in 2007, Ninagawa has also been active as a film director. As she built her career as an artist and took on the role of directing movies and large-scale exhibitions, she admits to feeling the challenges that come with it.

Ninagawa appears to be smoothly progressing as an artist, but in recent years, there have been events that changed her view of the world and her own thinking. One such event was the year leading up to the death of her father, Yukio.

"I was visiting him in the hospital every day, thinking that he probably wouldn't be able to leave. When I looked at the world from my father's perspective, as he was nearing his departure from this world, everything seemed beautiful. There were moments when the light shining into a nearby convenience store and the people walking across the crosswalk all seemed wonderful, and I thought, 'What a beautiful world this is, what a wonderful world,' and it was like a moment when everything flipped like Othello."

Until then, Ninagawa's creative energy was fueled by anger, wondering, "Why is the world like this?" and "I can't stand this."

However, she was made aware of the world's beauty from "the perspective of my father leaving this world." The world changed significantly with the spread of COVID-19.

"I feel like the world has changed audibly during the years of the pandemic, and I've realized that the small, wonderful moments in everyday life are actually made up of a miraculous overlap of various happinesses."

WITH A NEW PERSPECTIVE, NINAGAWA AIMS TO PURSUE FURTHER EXPRESSIONS.

"I've been doing various things for a long time, and I think I've reached a phase where I can express myself without being bound by methods of expression. I'm excited about this, and I'm thinking of going all out for the next 10 years."

2007 年公開の『さくらん』以降、映画監督としても活動 している蜷川氏。アーティストとしてのキャリアを積み、 映画や大規模な展覧会を指揮する立場になったからこそ、 難しさを感じることもあると語ります。

順風満帆にアーティストとしての道を進んでいるかのよう に見える蜷川氏ですが、近年、世界の見方や自身の考え方 が変わる出来事がありました。ひとつは、父・幸雄氏が亡 くなるまでの 1 年ほど。 「もう多分病院を出ることはないだろうなって思いながら 毎日お見舞いに行ってたんです。この世界との別れが近づ いている父の目線で世界を見ると、全てが美しくて、近所 のコンビニに差し込む光も綺麗だし、横断歩道を歩く人々 も、何だか素晴らしいものに見えてくる瞬間があって、な んてこの世界は美しいんだろう、素晴らしい世界じゃない かって、オセロのように裏返った瞬間があったんです」 それまで、蜷川氏の創作のエネルギーは「どうしてこんな 世界なんだろう」「ここが許せない」といった怒りだった そうです。しかし「この世を去りゆく父の視点」から、世 界の素晴らしさに気付かされたのだとか。新型コロナウイ ルスの流行で、世界が大きく変わりました。 「やっぱりコロナ禍の数年間って世界が音を立てて変わっ たような気がしていて、その一瞬一瞬の日常の中の、ささ やかなことですけれども、素敵な瞬間って、実は奇跡的な いろいろな幸福の重なりによってできてることなんだなっ ていうのを実感したんです」

新たな視点を得て、 蜷川氏はさらなる表現の 追及を目指します。

「いろんなことを長らくやってきて、表現方法に縛られ ず自分を表現できるようなフェーズに辿り着いたと思い ます。そのことに自分自身がわくわくしてるというか、 この先の 10 年間もいろんなことを思いっきりやるぞっ と思っています」

蜷川実花展 MIKA NINAGAWA EXHIBITION ETERNITY IN A MOMENT 瞬きの中の永遠 Since its opening, it has attracted a great deal of attention as a "spot where you can immerse yourself in art works," drawing many visitors from both domestic and international locations. The total number of visitors during the exhibition period recorded 250,000. 開幕以降 “ アート作品に没入できる注目スポット ” として大きな話題を呼び、国内に加え海外からのお 客様も多数ご来場され、会期中の来場者総数は 25 万人を記録しました。

To commemorate the opening of TOKYO NODE, the second project, "Mika Ninagawa Exhibition Eternity in a Moment," was held from December 5, 2023, to February 25, 2024, at Toranomon Hills Station Tower TOKYO NODE 45F GALLERY A/B/C. On December 4, we heard from Mika Ninagawa herself about the thoughts she poured into her creation during the press preview of "Mika Ninagawa Exhibition Eternity in a Moment."

"This time, I approached the creation of works with a team. For me, it was a culmination of skills honed through photography, movies, and various other experiences. I felt like I encountered a new version of myself and stood at the starting line once again. I felt like I could head to a new stage from there," said Mika Ninagawa.

The exhibition "Mika Ninagawa Exhibition Eternity in a Moment," created by the creative team "EiM," which included photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa and data scientist Hiroaki Miyata among other talented members, generated significant buzz.

The "spatial experience" type of exhibition allowed visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the works, spreading over a vast space of 1,500 square meters to showcase 11 video installations, photographs, and threedimensional exhibits. Visitors were able to immerse themselves in the visual shower created by Ninagawa, wrapped in the unique and vibrant sense of color of her one-of-a-kind works. This exhibition was irresistible for fans, and even first-timers to Ninagawa's works were drawn to the magical color scheme of the world, regardless of age or gender.

"Just by changing the way we view the ordinary scenes around us, the finer details of everyday life can shine and make us realize how beautiful the world is. Although it may seem trivial, such perspectives could lead to the future," suggested the concept behind Ninagawa's works, which appeared deeply connected to the wisdom needed to live through our times.

The perspective of "elevating the momentary beauty of everyday life to eternity" was embodied in each video work. "For example, if you stepped out of this building, there were countless beautiful scenes. In fact, some of the video works were shot from the windows during the setup, drawing inspiration from various everyday moments. The way we view things can change the world. After more than a year of careful creation, I reconstructed the landscapes I encountered, aiming to allow you to experience them in space. I created a space where you could feel the exhilaration, happiness, or even think it would be nice to die in such a place, that I felt from viewing various worlds. I aimed to go beyond just creating a 'beautiful garden' to reach further expressions. Everything has two sides. The space also contained such a message. We worked tirelessly up until the last minute, and I hoped many people would come to experience the space we finally created."

The dramatic flurry of flowers encompassing the exhibition was the strongest space of beauty suitable for welcoming the new spring of the Year of the Dragon, sure to bring fortune into the hearts of those who visited. 作品世界に没入することができる「空間体験型」の展示は、1,500㎡ におよぶ広大なスペースを贅沢に使用して 11 作品の映像インスタレ ーション・写真、立体展示などを展開し、蜷川氏が生み出すビジュア ルシャワーが誕生しました。唯一無二の華やかな色彩感覚を放つ作品 群に体ごと包まれるだけに、ファンにとってはたまらない展示です。 また、蜷川氏の作品を初めて見る人々にとっても、老若男女問わず魔 法のような配色に彩られた世界観に惹きつけられたことでしょう。 「あたりまえに広がる景色の見方を少し変えるだけで、日常の細やか なことが輝いて見えてくるし、こんなにも世界は美しいんだというこ とに気づかされます。一見些細なことではありますが、このような視 点が未来に繋がっていくのではないでしょうか」 蜷川氏の作品のコンセプトは、今の時代を生き抜くための知恵とも深 い関係がありそうです。 「日常の瞬間的な美しさを永遠に昇華させる」という視点は、それぞ れの映像作品の中に生かされています。「例えば、このビルから一歩 出たら、美しい風景が無数にあります。実は、設営中に窓から撮影し た映像作品もあるほど、様々な日常の瞬間からインスピレーションを 得ています。自分の物の見方によって世界は変化するもの。これまで に出会ってきた風景をもう一度再構築し、空間で体感して頂けるよう、 1 年以上の時間をかけて丁寧に創作を重ねました。私が様々な世界を 見て感じて得た高揚感や多幸感、もしくはこんな場所で死ねたらいい なと思えるような空間を作りました。ただ「綺麗な花園」だけではなく、 その先の表現まで辿り着くことを目指しました。物事は全て表裏一体。 そんなメッセージをこめた空間もあります。不眠不休で直前まで粘り、 ようやく作り上げた空間なので、是非多くの方々に会場で実際に体験 していただきたいと思います」 ドラマティックな花吹雪に包まれる同展は、辰年の新春を迎える時期 にふさわしい最強の美の空間。来場者の心の中に福を呼び込んだに違 いありません。 Gen de Art Mar 2024

Internationally active in sculpture and painting, Leiko Ikemura was born in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. She studied Spanish at Osaka University of Foreign Studies before advancing to Fine Arts at the University of Seville in Spain to embark on her artistic journey. Her talents, recognized through a variety of works emerging from her interactions with different cultures as she moved from Switzerland to Germany, earned her numerous awards, including the Cologne Fine Art Award and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology's Art Encouragement Prize. We learned about the trajectory of Ikemura, a pioneering Japanese female artist, and the sources of her unique artistic world. 彫刻と絵画の分野で国際的に活動するイケムラレイコ氏は、三重県の津市 で生まれました。大阪外国語大学でスペイン語を学び、その後スペインの セビリア美術大学へと進学し、アートの道に足を踏み入れました。彼女の 才能は、スイスからドイツへと移住しつつ、様々な文化と交流しながら描 き出された多種多様な作品によって、ケルンファインアート賞や芸術選奨 文部科学大臣賞など、数々の賞を受け取ることとなります。日本人女性ア ーティストとして世界で先駆的な活動を行ったイケムラ氏の軌跡と、彼女 の独特な芸術世界の源泉について伺いました。 Gen de Art Mar 2024

Ikemura's body of work, featuring motifs of girls and creatures melting into nature or faceless young girls, offers a unique expression open to viewer interpretation.

Her works question the way of life and nature of existence, influenced by her experience of venturing overseas at the young age of 21.

"My sensitivity was very flexible at that time, and the Spanish language and its culture deeply penetrated my inner self.

This was extremely important in building my foundation as an artist," she explains.

The Impact of MULTIPLE LANGUAGES and CULTURES on Creativity "Switzerland presented a culture in stark contrast to Spain. There, I needed to focus on my work and adapt to a new language and culture." She temporarily set aside Spanish, her language of study, and self-taught German, the official language of Switzerland. Working as a high school teacher during the day, studying languages at night, and painting in the wee hours brought new changes to her work.

"Language influences art because it evokes images and conveys emotions and thoughts. A phrase in Spanish might capture my heart and inspire my work, while the precision and logic of German lend structural strength and tension to my pieces."

Fluent in multiple languages and deeply interested in literature, Ikemura produced many works in the 1980s that emphasized the inseparability of words and paintings, highlighting narrativity. Influenced by language, it was a natural progression for her to create artworks.

After completing her studies in Spain, Ikemura, determined to establish herself as a female artist independently, bravely faced life in a foreign land, graduating from the Fine Arts at the University of Seville and later setting up a studio in Zurich, Switzerland.

THE PATH TO THREE-DIMENSIONAL EXPRESSION: ADVERSITY OPENS A NEW WORLD 立体表現への道：逆境が開いた新しい世界

Ikemura's artistic journey, filled with numerous challenges, took a new direction in 1984 when she received the prestigious Art Prize of Stadtzeichner in Germany. The increase in exhibitions and solo shows and her rise to fame as a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts.

However, this was accompanied by resentment and criticism towards the strict, Western-centric mainstream art world. During the late 1980s, a period of exhaustion and creative stagnation, her encounter with ceramics opened a new world for Ikemura.

"All my creations spring from within me, and each is imbued with deep thoughts. However, the works I created using ceramics for the first time hold a special place in my heart. This opened a new door in my world of expression and became a turning point," says Ikemura.

Nearly four decades since her first encounter with ceramics, few in contemporary art were incorporating it as she did initially.

"Ceramics are very sensual and closely related to the body. They also transform with humidity and temperature. The unpredictable nature of the final outcome after firing adds both challenge and appeal," she explains. The uncontrollable nature of ceramics showed Ikemura the possibilities of creation. She continues to explore new forms of expression, including applying glazes for color and venturing into glass sculpture.

"Words, ideas, and films are also sources of my creativity.

Especially poetry and films are important to me, and recently I have been producing video works. These are born from my research and attempt a different expression from conventional films," she adds.

幾重もの挑戦と共にアーティストの道を切り開いたイケムラ 氏。彼女の冒険は 1984 年、ドイツの名誉ある美術賞「シュタ ット・ツァイヒナー」を受賞したことをきっかけに、ドイツの 地へと舞台を移します。増え続ける展覧会と個展の数、ベルリ ン芸術大学の教授への昇進に伴う名声の上昇。しかし、その背 後には、西洋中心なメインストリームの厳格なアート界への反 感や批判という影がつきまとっていました。そんな困難に疲弊 し、制作が行き詰まっていた 1980 年代後半、セラミックとい う新たな素材との出会いがイケムラ氏の世界を拓くこととなり ます。 「私の創作は全て内側から湧き上がるもの。だからこそ、一つ 一つに深い想いが込められています。しかし、その中でも特別 な想いを抱くのは初めてセラミックを使った作品です。これが 私の表現世界に新たな扉を開き、ターニングポイントとなった のです」とイケムラ氏は語ります。

彼女がセラミックと出会って早四十年近く。当初の彼女のよう に、現代アートにセラミックを取り入れる者は少なかったと言 います。「セラミックは非常にセンシュワルで、カラダに密接 してます。また湿度や温度によってトランスフォームします。 焼き上がりの結果が予測し難い不確定な要素も持っています。 この特性こそが、挑戦と魅力の両面を持つのです」と彼女は語 ります。「自分ですべてをコントロールできない」というセラ ミックの特性は、イケムラ氏に創造の可能性を示しました。彼 女はその後も色を付ける釉薬の塗布、ガラス彫刻への挑戦な ど、新たな表現の探求を絶えず行っています。 「言葉や思想、映画も私の創造の源です。特に詩や映画は私に とって重要で、最近では映像作品の制作も行っています。映像 作品は私の研究から生まれたもので、通常の映画とは異なる表 現を試みています」と彼女は述べます。 Gen de Art Mar 2024

While traversing different countries with their unique languages and cultures, Ikemura has channeled her experiences into her work. Yet, even as she lived abroad, her heart always held a place for her homeland, Japan. This sentiment deepened following the 2011 Great East Japan Ear thqua ke. In response to the disa ster, Ikemura int rospect ively pondered, "What can I do for my motherland?" leading to the creation of her piece "Usagi Kannon."

"What I want to convey to today's artists is to cherish their homeland while looking towards the world. And, through ar t, to think about what can be done and act accordingly. My own desire to contribute to Japan, my homeland, intensified after experiencing the earthquake in the northeast. It's about being deeply involved with the origin while also making an impact on the world," Ikemura shares. Her passionate approach to art and her clear sense of vision have nurtured her into an artist of international repute. Her life offers continual insights into becoming a globally recognized Japanese individual.

異郷で 思い描く故郷への想い 言語も文化も異なる国々を渡り歩きながら、その地での経 験を作品へと昇華してきたイケムラ氏。しかし、彼女が海 外で生活していても、その心の中には常に故郷である日 本のことがありました。その想いが一層深まったのは、 2011 年の東日本大震災がきっかけでした。この大震災を 受けて、イケムラ氏は自分の内面と向き合いながら、「母 国のために何ができるだろうか」という思いから『うさぎ 観音』という作品を生み出しました。 「私が今のアーティストたちに伝えたいことは、故郷を大 切にしながら世界に目を向けることです。そして、アート を通じて何ができるかを考え行動することでしょうか。私 自身も東北の震災を経て、故郷である日本に貢献したいと いう想いが強まりました。それはオリジンに深く関与しな がらも世界に発信することです」とイケムラ氏は語りま す。 アートへの熱い姿勢と、明確な目的意識をもって行動を進 めるその姿勢が、イケムラ氏を世界で通用するアーティス トへと育て上げました。彼女の生き様からは、世界に通用 する日本人になるためのヒントが絶えず示されています。

How the Marriage of Opera and Contemporary Art Creates a New Multi-dimensional Audience Experience オペラ×現代アートの融合が生み出す 多次元の新劇場体験 Renowned Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota is recognised throughout the globe, as well as in her home country, for her signature installations made with red thread, which have been featured in galleries and museums all over the world in the past decade. But today, Shiota’s work is taking an unexpectedly new turn.

Chiharu Shiota gained prominence as a performance and installation creator in the world of art in the early 2000s. Striking large-scale installations consisting of nothing but intricate webs of bright red thread became her rise to fame. Shiota managed to conceive a distinct creative voice, telling her personal stories, and expanding them into universal concerns.

She has redefined the concept of memory by collecting ordinary objects such as shoes, keys, and dresses, engulfing them in immense thread structures.

The artist represented Japan at the 56th Biennale in Venice in 2015 with her work The Key in the Hand which incorporated over 50,000 keys hanging from the ceiling covered with a web of red yarn. As of now, throughout her career, Shiota’s works have been shown in esteemed galleries around Europe and Asia, with several solo and group shows currently running in Japan, China, Vietnam, Germany and Switzerland.

STORYTELLING 2000 年代初頭、塩田千春氏はアート界で パフォーマンスとインスタレーションを 駆使したクリエイターとして注目を浴び 始めました。真っ赤な糸が複雑に張り巡ら されることによって構成された印象的な 大規模インスタレーションが、一躍彼女を 有名にしました。 塩田氏は、彼女の個人的な物語を普遍的な 事柄として捉えることで、オリジナリティ 溢れる創造的な声を生み出すことに成功 しました。彼女は、靴、鍵、ドレスといっ た日常にありふれたものを集め、巨大な糸 の構造に巻き込むことで、記憶の概念を再 定義したのです。 2015 年の第 56 回ヴェネツィア・ビエン ナーレでは、日本代表として、天井から吊 るされた 5 万個以上の鍵を網目状に広が る赤い糸で覆った作品「The Key in the Hand」を出展しました。塩田氏の作品は、 これまでヨーロッパやアジアの著名なギ ャラリーで展示され、現在は日本、中国、 ベトナム、ドイツ、スイスで個展やグルー プ展が開催されています。

In her latest project, an ambitious stage design for Idomneo, re di Creta at Grand Théâtre de Genève, Chiharu Shiota has not stepped away from her signature style. In this work, the artist discovered a striking way to enhance the audience’s experience of the musical performance by incorporating her red yarn webs to highlight a sensation of movement and build dramatic tension on stage.

According to the artist, the collaboration with the opera theatre, as well as choreographer and founder of Eastman dance company Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, enabled her to design the stage in a way that helped connect the visual and the musical into a cohesive piece: “I think Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and I speak the same language but have very different backgrounds. I immediately understood what he wanted to do and we had the same vision.”

“The dancers and the stage set are already balanced, already working together – but the music unites them. The stage design cannot stand alone, so it is already connected to dance, and the music brings it all together for the viewer,” – the artist explains.

Shiota elaborates on her vision, adding that the thread moves when the dancers from the Ballet du Grand Théâtre and Eastman move, which creates a connection between the continuous motion on stage and in the set itself.

In her view, the presence of the dancers is a necessary component that can bring the red thread to life, making it a key active element in the production.

As she describes, the ropes are hanging from the ceiling, and the dancers interact with it, transforming simple lines into an ocean of movement.

“I can create the theme and the room, I can change the surroundings but I need the dancers on the stage to do so,” – she adds, acknowledging the new dimension her work takes on with the element of music and consecutive movement of performers on stage.

The artist also notes that the stage design carries a lot of her own artistic meanings and themes, as “the thread is not an accumulation of many single threads, but it is more like a line in a drawing”, echoing her approach to visual expression. This way, the new chapter of Chiharu Shiota’s artistic path seems to begin, where the creator expands her area of creation to embody new media, affecting audiences in a multiplicity of new ways.

音楽と視覚芸術を紡ぐ

Shinji Ohmaki, a contemporary artist and professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Sculpture Depa r t ment , d i scu s se s a r t a nd ph i losophy t h rou gh installations. He is currently contemplating new creative realms, drawing inspiration from the two trials experienced by the Japanese and humanity at large: the Great East Japan Earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic.

EXPRESSING EXISTENCE THROUGH DIVERSE MATERIALS Born in 1971 in Gifu Prefecture, Ohmaki completed his graduate studies in sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts. He focuses on elements like shadows and darkness, which are omnipresent yet often overlooked, the boundary areas between conflicting values, and minorities that fade away in the constantly changing society. Using "space," "time," "gravity," and "memory" as keywords, he attempts to create physical spatiotemporal realms to approach the elusive concept of "existence" through various materials and techniques. His work, which highlights the light and darkness of modern societ y, prompts viewers to gain new perspectives on their own existence by immersing themselves in his unique spaces. His notable works include the "ECHO" series, "Liminal Air," "Memorial Rebirth," and "Flotage." Ohmaki has exhibited his work internationally, in Asia and Europe, and has received high acclaim, winning several awards such as the 6th Taro Okamoto Memorial Award for Contemporary Art Special Prize, the 8th Enku Grand Prize, and the 27th Takashimaya Art Award.

ART REFLECTING THE LIGHT AND DARKNESS OF SOCIETY The National Art Center Tokyo's largest exhibition gallery (with an 8-meter-high ceiling and a 2,000 square meter floor area) hosted Ohmaki's solo exhibition "Shinji Ohmaki: Interface of Being" from November 1 to December 25 last year. This dynamic installation, incorporating video and sound, powerfully expressed Ohmaki's inquiry into "existence."

The Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 and the COVID-19 pandemic, declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020, provided significant inspiration for his work.

"Earthquakes and pandemics have caused humans to panic. Being confined indoors, facing various restrictions, the meaning of existence, even the meaning of life itself, became unstable. What are we living for? What makes us say we are living? It all became incredibly ambiguous."

In this context, Ohmaki's work reflects his desire to question the nature of human existence through spaces that allow for a more objective perspective.

社会の光と闇を映し出すアート 国立新美術館の最大の展示室 ( 天井高さ 8 メートル、床面積 2000 平方メートル ) を会場とし、昨年 11 月 1 日から 12 月 25 日まで開催された個展「大巻伸嗣 Interface of Being 真空のゆらぎ」。映像や音響 なども用いたダイナミックなインスタレーションは、大巻氏の「存在」への問い掛けを力強く表しました。 2011 年 3 月に発生した東日本大震災、そして世界保健機関 (WHO) が 20 年 3 月にパンデミック ( 世界 的大流行 ) を宣言した新型コロナウイルスの猛威。二つの試練は、作品を作る上で重要なキーを与えました。 「地震によって、感染症によって、人間が右往左往する。外に出られなかったり、あらゆる制限を受けたり、 そういう生活の中で存在する意味、生きていく意味すらもが揺らぎました。何のために生きているのか、 どうしてそれが生きていると言えるのかがすごく曖昧になりました」 そうした中、「人間というものをどうやって捉えていけるか、少し客観的に見ていける、そういう空間を 通して存在のあり方を問う」そうした思いが作品に投影されたのです。

EXPLORATION OF ART AND PERCEPTION Integrating different art forms, including video, sound, and poetry, stimulates the brain, allowing for the comprehension of "existence" through visual confirmation.

Ohmaki explains the rationale behind his methods: "The change in light makes the material itself appear and disappear, transforming into something different.

It's not stable." The underlying thought is that what we see and recognize may not necessarily be correct. For Ohmaki, the desire to create situations that navigate these boundaries is perhaps a fundamental drive as an artist.

Ref lecting on the " Shinji Ohmaki: Interface of Being" exhibition, Ohmaki believes he has successfully consolidated his work from the past two decades and is now exploring the next steps. "I want to spend time working on something new, to find answers by researching human-related subjects and visiting various countries and sites."

AI AND THE HUMAN CONDITION Ohmaki expresses an interest in dystopian thoughts and researching a world without humans, including the existence of non-human entities like AI. "When humans can no longer transcend death, they perish. However, AI, as it is stored, can transcend time and space, potentially enabling its resurrection."

Humans, with their diverse emotions, are "devices" that explore how to fight and live as biological entities, creating possibilities. However, AI, limited to past data, cannot envision new concepts. Language in AI becomes a mere device for projecting the future when stored in a capsule. Will "mutations" that occur through the physical body happen in AI? Ohmaki's contemplation of the relationship between AI and humans is a significant influence on his work.

芸術と認識の探求 映像やサウンド、詩の要素も含めた異なる芸術形態を統合した表現。脳に刺激が与えられ、目で確認し て「存在」を理解する。表現の手法の理由について、大巻氏はこう語ります。「光の変化によって、そ の物質そのものが見え隠れし、違った物質へと変化して見えるんです。安定しているわけではない」 目に見えること、認知していることが実は正しいかどうかは分からない、そうした思いが根底にあります。 大巻氏にとって、「そのボーダーを行き来するような状況を作り出したい」という思いこそが、表現者 としての欲求なのかもしれません。 「真空のゆらぎ」展で、これまでのおよそ 20 年間の作品を一つにまとめることができたと考えている大 巻氏。次のステップを今、模索しています。 「時間をかけて、新しい何かに取り組みたい。その答えを見つけるために人に関することをリサーチする。 そのためにいろいろな国、現場に足を運ぶことを考えています」

AI と人間の在り方 ディストピア ( 反理想郷、否定的ユートピア ) 的な思考、そこに人間が存在しない世界のリサーチも捉え てみたいテーマであると大巻氏は語ります。そこで考えられることは、人ではないこと、非人間、AI の存在。 「死ぬとき、何か乗り移ることができなくなったときに人は死滅する。しかし、現代社会に登場した AI は、貯蔵されていけば、彼らは種として、時間を移動することができるし、空間を移動することができる。 そこで復活できる可能性もある」 人間はいろいろな感情を持ち、生物としてどのように戦い、生きていけるかを模索し、その中で起こす 可能性を作っていく「装置」。しかし、AI は過去のデータの中でしか想像できないため、新しいことが 見えません。AI における言語。言語が貯蔵するタンクの中に収められると、言語はカプセルの中で未来 を投じられるただの装置になります。人間という多様な感情を持っているもの、肉体によって発生する「突 然変異」は起こるのでしょうか。こうした AI と人間の在り方に対する思索も、大巻氏の制作に影響を及 ぼす一つの要因となっているのです。

Adrienne Desbiolles was born in Zurich and still has a lot of love for the city, which was exactly the reason she decided to come back after a brilliant career in Normandy, France, where she set up her first space in 2012, in the former estate of 20th-century French artist Bernard Buffet. But in 2021, drawn to her home country, Adrienne opened another gallery in Zurich which now hosts artworks from all over the world in the eclectic shows, handpicked personally by the gallery owner herself.

Her recent gallery opening in Gstaad was also a major success. Located at the very centre of the village, surrounded by mountains, Adrienne says that this next step was also inspired by her childhood memories.

“My mum, she was living as a child here. She has a little chalet here and we used to come to ski here all the time”, - she says. “And I thought it was really a good place where I can bring some art. There are a lot of people interested in art in Gstaad, but I wanted to bring it my way – because I do it a little bit differently than a lot of other galleries.”

For Adrienne, collecting art has been a lifetime passion and career. “I’ve been collecting art for 40 years. At a certain moment of my life, I thought: ‘Why not do my everyday job with my passion, with my real love?’”

“Every day I spend two or three hours on Instagram, on websites, on everything. I’m looking everywhere. I go to galleries or exhibitions to discover new artists. I see a lot”. This is how Adrienne describes her everyday search, a major part of her work as an art collector. For her, being able to discover new talent is a never-ending quest – but, as she says, it is what makes her work so exciting.

“When there is something I like or even something that intercepts me, makes me feel something, I try to contact the artist. I always want to contact the artist directly,” – she explains.

For Adrienne, personal connection is above all other priorities.

Being able to connect with an artist on a personal level, to understand what they are like as a person, is the most important, she says. “If I have a good feeling, the work makes me happy, then it is right. I am happy, some of these artists are my great friends, almost family to me. I believe it is a major privilege in life to do something you really love to do, because not everybody can do this.”

EXPERIENCED With the new gallery in Gstaad opening only recently, Adrienne already had some major success in arranging an exclusive collaboration with a popular French artist Richard Orlinski, known for his daring colourful sculptures. “I think he is a very sympathetic and fun guy. He has a lot of ideas,” – Adrienne says about Orlinski. “But because he is always working with other galleries from around the world, even in Switzerland, this show is exclusive because I tried to bring some pieces you do not see everywhere”.

Despite the small size of the town, predominantly known as a ski resort around the world, Adrienne managed to create a welcoming space for all, showcasing art that is accessible for different groups of customers.

“From the beginning, when I just started, I saw people standing in front of the gallery. They looked curious but did not come in. I invited them in and when they said buying art was not for them, I told them it wasn’t true. ‘Just come in and have a look, even if you don't buy’, I said”, – she recalls. “Not everything has to be 100,000 Swiss francs [~113,000 US dollars]. You can have something for 500 francs [~570 US dollars] just as easily. I try to find art pieces for everybody.”

This February, Galerie Adrienne Desbiolles in Gstaad opened a show created in collaboration with Aston Martin luxury car brand, dedicated to James Bond, showcasing some well-recognised vehicles, props and clothes used on set of the films, as well as famous Bond photographs.

As an interior designer with a longstanding background in fashion, Stephanie has earned a reputation for her brave creative choices that attracted clientele from all around the globe. A blend of CREATIVE Iinfluences The idea of beauty has been an important one in Stephanie’s family, helping her cultivate appreciation for things that surrounded her since an early age. Such an outlook on life has become the foundation of Stephanie’s approach to design.

“I was raised with this idea that you can appreciate things that come from all over the world, as long as they create an emotion. I think this was the reason I decided to make this my job and create works of art for people,” – she recalls.

The fascination with beauty first translated in Stephanie’s fashion career spanning 20 years before her transition to the world of interior design. The experiences from the fashion industry also left their mark on her as an interior designer – especially, with the creative uses of textiles and textures in designs under the Stephanie Coutas brand.

“I love developing textiles and embroideries. This is what I used to do, and I brought this experience of mine from my childhood and combined it with my interests in fashion during these past years, which translated into interior design” – Stephanie adds.

As yet another key influence, Japanese culture also played a significant role in shaping the designer’s creative vision. Her parents lived in Tokyo, and Stephanie has been exposed to Japanese interior design since her formative years. Today, she continues to incorporate some of the Japanese values into her process to create balance and enhance a sense of tranquillity in a home: “Japanese art has this absolute quietness and peacefulness, which we are trying to bring in our work. Right now, the world is in chaos, and, more than ever, you need to have a home which is like your safe bubble, a space where you can regenerate and feel good.”

Stepha nie desig ned her f irst col lect ion of furniture and lighting pieces for her Parisian galler y during the pandemic. While it was presented to the public merely a year and a half ago, the show brought the gallery nationwide recognition, as well as inspired Stephanie to make plans to showcase the second collection in London. “Now the ga ller y is star t ing to expand, it works well, and we’re ready to show our craft around the world,” – she says.

Asked about her approach to work, particularly, when designing different spaces, Stephanie explains that she sees her job as “enhancing

what already exists and making it stand out, making it even more beautiful”. “My job is to understand, respect, enhance and then bring in our fresh perspective, fresh ideas, as well as the fresh creation process, and see how we can blend in different worlds.”

When approachin g t he desig n of a house, similar ideas underline the creative process.

Stephanie mentions that her team is “always going from the DNA of the building to start developing our interior design project, which means respecting what is there and trying not to remove the DNA but make the best of it”.

For the designer, while imagination and ambition are key, balance is vital in creating spaces for living. Such a skill undoubtedly requires empathy, respect and understanding: “You need to make bold decisions but, in order to do that and be right, you have to know exactly how far you can go, where to stop, and what to enhance.”

But , a f ter a l l, it a l l goes dow n to pa ssion, Stephanie continues. Being in love with what you do is what gives a creator the will to bring their vision to life. This is what has worked for Stephanie herself, whose passion is co clearly reflected in every piece of design she develops.

Vision for the FUTURE Despite her creat ive success i n such a shor t t i me, Stephanie does not plan on stopping where she is now. In fact, for the next year, she already has a number of exciting and ambitious projects ahead of her. Alongside various residential projects for private clients across the country, Stephanie has received a commission to design a hotel in the historic area of Paris, neighbouring with the famous Drouot auction house.

The future collection will encompass a wide range of home decor pieces, such as towels, tablecloth designs, plates, and bedding – essentially everything a client would encounter in a house designed by Stephanie.

Moreover, Stephanie is broadening her business horizons to include hotels and boutiques worldw ide. In just two months, she will be launching a special collection of outdoor furniture specif ically tailored for hotels.

Additionally, Louis Vuitton inaugurated its first ultraluxury store in Singapore in February 2024, showcasing an exclusive collaboration with Stephanie Coutas.

SMBC'S PASSIONATE COMMITMENT TO ART A Conversation with the Head of Private Banking, SMBC Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), a core company of the Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and one of Japan's three major megabanks, has recently been dedicating efforts to art. This initiative is part of the bank's "Five Values", particularly emphasizing "Proactive & Innovative" – a commitment to challenge the status quo and innovate without fear of failure. Takahashi Katsunori, the head of SMBC's Private Banking Division, shares his fervent passion for art.

Regarding art, he notes, "Historically, art has needed sponsors or patrons. In the West, f inancial institutions have played a significant role in the arts. This social significance is why banks engage in art."

After the bubble burst, cautiousness among corporations and individuals

Non-Financial Services as an Essential Item

From 2011 to 2015, Takahashi worked in Singapore, starting the private banking business from scratch. "My interactions with Western and Asian private banks and bankers in Singapore were the impetus for our focus on art," he recalls.

"The significance of non-financial services in private banking was a key lesson, especially art, wine, and philanthropy."

"Enthusiastic Welcome" from the Art Community

SMBC's engagement in the art scene has been warmly welcomed by the art community. "It feels like banks are finally returning to the art world," Takahashi says. "Though it may sound exaggerated, banks are trusted by the public, and their involvement lends credibility to art itself."

Takahashi continues, "Recently, the strengthening relationship between art and business has started to be discussed in Japan. I am proud that SMBC Group has been a pioneer in this area. In private banking, being progressive and having a sophisticated image is crucial. I believe our engagement in art has contributed to enhancing SMBC's image. This effort extends beyond business, positioning SMBC as a 'protector of culture' and contributes to the overall brand image from a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) standpoint."

Aim to Surpass Western Private Banks

From December 12 to 23, 2023, the contemporary art exhibition "The Hints – 12 Perspectives for Looking at the Present and the Future" took place at the "Earth Garden" in the SMBC East Tower, Tokyo. The exhibition showcased works by 12 contemporary artists, providing a serene escape for businessmen in the bustling Marunouchi and Otemachi business districts.

Kaori Iwasaki, CEO of THE ART, which organized the contemporary art exhibition, says, "I believe that the expressions of various artists' perspectives and values contain hints for conducting business and living. I hope that businessmen and the general public can gain many hints."

Discussing future goals and initiatives in art, Takahashi shares his vision, "If we talk about goals in the art domain, maybe becoming 'Asia's UBS' (a reference to the Swiss-based global financial group). UBS and other Western financial institutions are far ahead in their engagement with art. Their strength lies not only in their commitment to art but also in their advanced products and services. As a private banker, I aim to catch up with and surpass them."

"Admittedly, I've only deepened my understanding of art in recent years, but the more I learn, the more I'm astonished by its profundity. Art has added depth to my life; it's beautiful and enjoyable," says Takahashi.

Last year, SMBC made its first contemporary art purchase, acquiring some pieces by artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. "This purchase has become a significant part of my art journey. It wasn't easy to get approval for buying contemporary art in a traditional company like SMBC. However, the purchase has significantly advanced the understanding of contemporary art among senior management."

He concludes passionately, "If SMBC continues to purchase contemporary art, it will likely inspire similar movements in other companies. We aim to increase art patrons in Japanese society and establish a lasting presence."

FESTIVAL BEETHOVEN À BEAUNE Burgundian winemaking meets classical music in breath-taking French vineyards ワイン生産者と音楽家の意外なコラボレーションボーヌ・ベートーヴェン音楽祭のはじまり

The Beethoven Music Festival is an annual event that takes place in Beaune, at the centre of Burgundy, the winemaking region in France. The festival attracts visitors from all around the world every year, inviting both music and wine lovers who gather to listen to the works of greatest composers in history alongside other modern and classical compositions. As the next event is scheduled from the 4th to 7th of April 2024, preparations for the season of music, where guests will also be able to hear unique music pieces from Eastern Europe, unveil at full speed.

The festival was born as a result of an unexpected collaboration between winemaker Frédéric Mugnier from the Burgundian wine estate Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier and esteemed South Korean cellist Sung-Won Yang, both of whom now act respectively as President and artistic director of the event. Frédéric Mugnier has long been making outstanding wines in his winery in Burgundy, while Sung-Won Yang performed all over the world as a soloist and chamber musician. ベートーヴェン音楽祭は、フランスのワイン生産地ブルゴーニュの中心地であるボーヌで開催さ れる毎年恒例のイベントです。歴史上の偉大な作曲家の作品や他の近代・古典曲を聴きに、世界 中の音楽とワインをこよなく愛する人々が、この音楽祭に集います。2024 年 4 月 4 日から 7 日にかけて開催される次回の音楽祭では、東欧の個性的な音楽作品も演奏される予定で、現在、 来たる音楽祭の準備が急ピッチで進められています。 このフェスティバルは、ブルゴーニュのワイナリー「ドメーヌ・ジャック・フレデリック・ミュ ニエ」の当主フレデリック・ミュニエ氏と韓国の著名なチェロ奏者、ヤン・スンウォン氏との思 いがけないコラボレーションから生まれました。フレデリック・ミュニエ氏はブルゴーニュのワ イナリーで長年にわたって優れたワインを造り続け、ヤン・スンウォン氏はソリスト、室内楽奏 者として世界各地で活躍しており、現在 2 人はこの音楽祭の会長と芸術監督を務めています。

How do you come up with the idea of having this festival?

Sung-won Yang: I have been a big fan of Frédéric's wine since a long time ago. About 16 or 17 years ago, I contacted him. Since I play in Europe regularly, especially in France, I always made sure to stop by Frédéric's winery. We became good friends and, as we talked, we realised how similar we saw the emotions people experienced from great wine and great music. At one point, I suggested that we create a festival.

And since Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, therefore I jokingly said we must have a Beethoven festival in Beaune, France. And Frédéric laughed, but he liked the idea and then that was how we began. この音楽祭のアイデアはどのように生まれましたか？ ヤン・スンウォン氏：私は昔からフレデリックのワインの大ファンで、16、17 年程前に彼に連絡をしたのがはじまりです。私は定期的にヨーロッパ、特にフ ランスで演奏しており、毎回フレデリックのワイナリーに立ち寄っていました。 いつしか、私たちは親しい友人になり、話しているうちに、人々が素晴らしい ワインと素晴らしい音楽から経験する感情が如何に似ているかということに気 づきました。そしてある時、私は音楽祭を立ち上げようと提案したのです。

How long does it take from the idea to it really happen?

Frédéric Mugnier: We set up the first edition of the festival in 2018 with a little help from my Burgundian friends. The administration of Beaune helped a lot since they were interested in having a new music even in the city. Year after year, it has become a more and more structured event.

What would you say the link is between the festival and the wine culture?

Frédéric Mugnier: There is something in common in the matter of aesthetics, beauty. People who are sensitive to beauty in any form will be sensitive to music and to wine, as well as other art forms.

Sung-won Yang: I agree with Frédéric. There are so many metaphysical links between great wine and great music. I think that the audience, when they come to Beaune and when they come to the concert in the evening, experiences a very unique side of the region. The inspiration from the music and the pleasure from the wine, as well as the fascination with the surroundings they felt prior during the day, all contribute to a fantastic experience.

FESTIVAL BEETHOVEN À BEAUNE How do you choose a new theme for the event each year?

Sung-won Yang: I try to change it every year because the artistic horizon is very broad. We only have four concerts each time, so every year we try to have different themes, different pieces and different colours of the music aesthetic for our audience to experience. This year, the theme is “Exposition Est”. Because when you say Exposition Sud, Exposition Est, Exposition Ouest, it’s also a word that passionate wine lovers and winemakers use in reference to the sun, how the sun and the vineyards are facing each other.

This theme, Exposition Est, is referring to the Eastern European composers and their particular musical aesthetic. This year, for the first time, we will have music written by Eastern European Composers such as Janáček and Dvořák, along with other immortal pieces by Beethoven and Schubert, among others. We will also have Messiaen who wrote the Quartet for the End of Time in Poland when he was in prison during the war.

What would you say make this year’s festival different to the one that took place last year?

Sung-won Yang: This year we’ll have a world premiere of a new piece commissioned to the French composer Éric Montalbetti – three impromptus that will be premiering on the 5th April. That is something very exciting. The other exciting part is that we’ll have a clarinettist as well – it’s the first time we’ll have a wind instrument featured in our festival.

We try to make sure that it remains at four concerts for now, and we try to make sure that we are opening to new musicians. We are giving opportunities to young people, different artists from around the world. This year, we have Yuko Hara, a fantastic violist from Quartet Ardeo, who will also play with Enrico Pace, Liza Ferschtman and myself.

What kind of message or emotion would you like to deliver to both our international audience and local audience?

Frédéric Mugnier: Something that is very important to me with the audience is that the public has very different levels of education and practice with music. Some are very educated music lovers who go to concerts several times a month, some are very occasional music listeners. But both have big smiles when they leave our concerts. The music can be appreciated at several levels, depending on your experience. But when it’s good, it’s good.

Sung-won Yang: For me, it’s very important that our audience is inspired. What Frédéric is making, his wines are not a product that we can go and buy in a shop. I love the work that he carries at the vineyards. I love the care and attention and respect towards the nature that he gives. And that is the same care that I give to the music. And both Frédéric and I, we hope that the audience who come to our concerts are inspired and that they will remember these concerts for many months or even many years after.

The music that we perform is from 200, 300 years ago, that has been matured over the years with different generations of performers and musicians. And when we perform it live at the Festival of Beaune, we love creating the link from last century or two centuries ago, reaching the ideal or emotion from another era, to our current audience, just like the wines made from the vineyards which have been vinifying wines for several centuries, here in Burgundy.

What would you expect the music festival to be like in the future?

Frédéric Mugnier: I would be very happy if we attracted a larger audience and if people were coming from a distance to attend the festival. But, still, what is very important is to keep the close relationship between the musicians and the organisation, between the staff and the audience.

Sung-won Yang: That is one very important point that we agree on, that we didn’t want to make a big festival. You know, classical music was never intended for a big audience. We want to make sure that this intimacy, even this intensity is kept, but we also want to make sure we keep the festival open to everybody, that it remains inclusive.

Champagne Salon is undoubtedly among the world’s most recognised brands of champagne with a reputation of excel lence. The w i nes produced at t he hea r t of France’s historic Champagne region are known for their unique style and signature line of Blanc de Blancs –wines made exclusively with one grape variety, Chardonnay.

In 2023, Salon presented its 1948 champagne to British King Charles III to commemorate his year of birth.

We spoke to Didier Depond, president at Champagne Salon, about the philosophy behind the brand, the challenges of contemporary winemaking, as well as his love for Japan and its sake tradition.

今回は、シャンパーニュ・サロンの社長であるディディエ・ドゥポ ン氏に、ブランドを支える哲学、現代のワイン造りが直面する課題、 そして日本と日本酒の伝統への愛についてお話を伺いました。

ounded by Eugène-Aimé Salon in 1920 in Côte des Blancs, who initially planned to merely produce champagne for his friends, Champagne Salon started a revolution in the world of wine as it became the first one to produce champagne from a single grape variety, calling it Blanc de Blancs (“white made of whites”). Today, honouring the memory of its founder, Champagne Salon prides itself on producing exceptional wines made exclusively with the Chardonnay grape.

The house continues to make its wines on a small territory in Côte des Blancs, on a single cru called Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. “We use Chardonnay only from this small village, and that is why it’s so prestigious. Many people compare Salon with Romanée-Conti in Burgundy or Petrus in Bordeaux”, – Depond explains.

The exclusivity of the champagnes by Salon is further underlined by the selective process of production. According to Depond, the winery releases very small quantities of wine, and it does not happen every year. In the last century, since its establishment, the winery only produced 37 vintages altogether.

“We select a lot before the harvest, during the harvest and after the harvest. Then, six months after the harvest, we decide if this vintage is the level of salon,” – he says. “The Salon wines are still good after 10 years, and even better after 20 years. This means that, when making a decision when to produce the wine, I have to imagine what it would be like in 20 years. It requires an understanding of the terroir, the soil, and the process, which I have after 38 years with the company.”

Depond adds that it is never an easy decision, but the house prides itself on releasing the very best of what it has to offer, even if saying “no” to a harvest means a lack of revenue for the next year – at the very least. “For example, in 2008, the quantity of the vintage we released was very small. Even though the harvest was generous, we selected only the outstanding grapes to create champagne of amazing quality. So, we produce only 8,000 bottles and only magnum size”, – he adds.

Depond mentions that the challenges of Champagne Salon are both global and local – but neither means that the house plans on lowering its standards. He stresses the contributions of the climate crisis to the changing conditions for winemakers, which, in 10 to 20 years, will turn into a real threat.

“The champagne will be there. But we need to be very careful. For instance, there is no more snow in the Pyrenees mountains. There will be a major challenge for the next generation to maintain the current quality of wines,” – Depond says.

The Champagne Salon president says that a part of maintaining the excellent reputation of the house around the world is raising awareness about the brand globally. “We need to be at the same level all around the world, that’s why I have made such a big effort to travel the world since 1997,” – he concludes.

A part of these travels has led Didier Depond to Japan where he discovered new sources of inspiration to continue refining his own vintages in France: “To me, traveling to Japan is always a huge pleasure, it’s like opening the whole new world. I love straightforward and precise things, so Japan really is the best place for me”. The connections between tradition and craftsmanship enriched Depond’s existing ways of handing champagne at Salon.

Over the years, as Depond says, he managed to find connections among the Japanese cultural figures outside of the wine industry, for example, including a close friendship with footballer Hidetoshi Nakata.

But it is not just the Japanese traditions that have caught the attention of Depond on his travels. He mentions that, on this journey, he managed to meet some of the best craftsmen in the world of sake, like Tatsugoro Takagi from Takagi Brewery in Yamagata Prefecture, who produced the world’s most prestigious Juyondai sake and with whom they stayed friends and continued to exchange ideas. The vibrant Japanese sake industry offered a source of inspiration to Depond, as he said that he picked up “a lot of good points from the sake business, from the traditional production process to its respect for traditional knowledge”.

Today, as the Champagne Salon business continues to thrive under the watchful leadership of Didier Depond, the whole world is waiting for the release of the new vintage, representing the best the world of champagne can offer.

Japanese tradition, French spirit 日本の伝統、フランスの精神

こうしたディディエ・ドゥポン氏の旅は、彼を日本にいざない、新たなインスピレーションの源の 発見に導きました。それは、フランスで手掛けるヴィンテージを研鑽し続けるためにも必要なこと でした。 「日本への旅は毎回喜びに満ち溢れ、新しい世界の扉を開く道程でもあります。私は自然 体で精緻なものが好きなので、日本は本当に最高の場所なのです」と述べています。そして、伝統 と職人技との繋がりにより、自身がこれまで培ってきた従来からのシャンパンの取り扱い方法がよ り豊かになったと言います。 ドゥポン氏が言うように、彼は年月をかけて、ワイン業界以外の日本の文化人との交流を深め、元 サッカー選手の中田英寿氏とも親密な友情を育みました。 しかし、旅先でドゥポン氏の心を捉えたのは、日本の伝統だけではありません。彼は、世界最高峰 の純米大吟醸酒を造る山形県高木酒造の高木辰五郎氏のような、日本酒の世界における素晴らしい 職人たちと出会い、友人としてアイデアを交換したそうです。活気ある日本酒業界は、彼のインス ピレーションの源となり、ドゥポン氏は「伝統的な製法から受け継がれた知識の尊重に至るまで、 日本酒ビジネスから多くの良い点を学びました」と振り返ります。 今日、シャンパーニュ・サロンの事業は、ディディエ・ドゥポン氏のきめ細やかなリーダーシップ の下で繁栄を続けており、世界中の人々が、シャンパン界が提供し得るこの上ない新ヴィンテージ のリリースを待ち望んでいます。

Tokyo, the city with the most "stars" in the world, showcases its gastronomy to the globe with the "Michelin Guide Tokyo 2024." The announcement ceremony for the listed restaurants was held at the National Art Center, Tokyo. This year, a record 504 restaurants from 33 different cuisine categories were selected. At the ceremony, chefs from the listed restaurants gathered to share their ambitions for reaching new heights.

After a challenging period under the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's ceremony, the 17th edition and the first in-person event in four years, was themed "SAIKAI" (Reunion, Reopening). Gen Sudo, President of Japan Michelin Tire Co., expressed the sentiment behind the theme before the ceremony began: "There are emotions that can only be experienced in person.

You will surely appreciate their value once again."

The ceremony venue was filled with the joy of "SAIKAI" and was bustling with energy. There were 12 three-star restaurants (exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey) and 33 two-star restaurants (excellent cuisine, worth a detour). These numbers are the highest among cities worldwide, and Sayaka Miwa, Executive Officer of Michelin Guide & Robert Parker Wine Advocate (RPWA), described it as an "honor." Even Sudo, the President, admits he doesn't know much about the inspectors, who undergo rigorous training mainly in France and evaluate cuisine based on the same standards and methods worldwide. The fact that Tokyo has the most three-star and two-star restaurants means it offers the most attractive cuisine in the world. 世界で最も多くの「星」が輝く都市、東京のガストロノミーを世界へ。「ミ シュランガイド東京 2024」掲載店の発表セレモニーが、国立新美術館で 開催されました。今回選定されたのは 33 種類の料理カテゴリーからの過 去最多となる 504 軒。掲載店の料理人たちが一堂に会したセレモニーでは、 さらなる高みを目指す抱負も語られました。 長い間閉ざされていたコロナ禍の下で、料理の世界も厳しい時期を経て、 17 回目かつ 4 年ぶりの対面開催となった今回のセレモニーのテーマは、 「SAIKAI」（再開、再会）。そのテーマに込めた思いを主催者の日本ミシ ュランタイヤ社長・須藤元氏がセレモニーの開始に先立ってこう語りまし た。「リアルでないと味わえない感動があります。改めてその価値を感じ ていただけることでしょう」 セレモニー会場は「SAIKAI」の喜びもあり、活気にあふれました。三つ星 （そのために旅行する価値のある卓越した料理）店 12 軒、二つ星（遠回 りしてでも訪れる価値のある素晴らしい料理）店 33 軒。この数は世界の 各都市の中でも最も多く、ミシュランガイド・RPWA 事業部執行役員の三 輪唆矢佳（さやか）氏は「誉れ」だと語ります。 須藤社長ですら「詳しくは知らない」というインスペクター（調査員）は、 主にフランスで厳しいトレーニングを受け、世界同一の基準・メソッドで 料理を評価します。三つ星、二つ星が最も多い、ということは世界の中で 東京が最も魅力ある料理を提供していることを意味しているのです。

ENDLESS TRAINING TO HONE SKILLS 「限りない修業の世界だと思います」 "I believe it's a world of endless training." Amid various cuisines, chefs strive to enhance creativity and pursue deliciousness. Miwa expresses the chefs' efforts as "training" – continuously refining their skills without complacency and aiming for greater heights. This might be why Tokyo has the most "stars" in the world.

"Harutaka," awarded three stars for the first time this year, is a traditional sushi restaurant that embodies this philosophy. The owner, Harutaka Takahashi, honed his skills for 12 years at the three-star "Sukiyabashi Jiro" before opening his own restaurant. It was awarded one star when first listed in the Tokyo edition and climbed to three stars over 16 years. He carefully selects fish with years of trained discernment and serves it on perfectly cooked rice. His philosophy could even be called a philosophy: "I always aim to make something better than before."

The "Tokyo edition" also features a diverse range of international cuisines. "MAZ," awarded two stars for the first time, is a prime example. Santiago Fernandez, former head chef of "Central" in Lima, Peru, is a culinary maestro who transforms Japanese ingredients into dishes that feel like a journey through Peru. Fernandez says, "I want to keep being creative and come up with ways to incorporate Japanese ingredients into my dishes."

今回初めて三つ星に選ばれた「青空 /Harutaka」 は、その言葉を体現している正統派寿司店です。 店主の髙橋青空氏は、三つ星店「すきやばし次郎」 で 12 年間、腕を磨いた後、自らの店をオープン。 東京版第 1 号に掲載された際は一つ星。それから 16 年かけて三つ星へと昇りつめました。長年の 鍛えた目利きで選んだ魚をさばき、炊き上げたし ゃりに乗せる。「いつも今よりいいものをと思っ て握っています」という言葉は哲学とさえ呼べる でしょう。 国際色豊かな多様性ある料理を楽しめることも 「東京版」の特色。二つ星で初掲載された「マス /MAZ」はその筆頭です。ペルー・リマの「セン トラル」の元ヘッドシェフ、サンティアゴ・フェ ルナンデス氏は日本の食材を「ペルーを旅してい るかのような」料理に仕上げる食のマエストロ。 フェルナンデス氏はこう語ります。「日本の食材 をいかに取り入れ、料理に作り上げることができ るか。創造性を失わなわず発想していきたい」

Sudo says that protecting the planet is also our mission. Michelin aims to make tires 100% sustainable and carbon-neutral by 2050, but it also focuses heavily on sustainability in the culinary field. The "Michelin Green Star" selection, which highlights restaurants committed to sustainability, is a major pillar of this effort. Inspectors conduct investigations on how restaurants contribute to sustainable gastronomy when they visit, according to Miwa. Efforts such as reducing food waste by using all parts of ingredients and minimizing CO2 emissions are evaluated. This year, 11 restaurants, including the contemporary cuisine " nôl," were listed.

As a new initiative, "Selected Restaurants" were introduced. These are hidden gems that inspectors want to recommend to Michelin Guide users, even though they didn't qualify for a "star" or Bib Gourmand (good quality, good value cooking). According to Miwa, "We can now

choose restaurants from a wider variety of food scenes and genres."

The "Michelin Guide Official App," launched in April last year, has been well-received. This year, in 2024, the "Michelin Guide Hotel Selection" will also be launched, selecting even more outstanding hotels from among the great ones. Five evaluation criteria will be set, and the selected hotels will be awarded the "MICHELIN Key." Looking forward to a new era and the future beyond, Sudo powerfully shares his vision: "I want you to use the carefully selected information from the Michelin Guide, established over 123 years, in your daily life.

We want to make your travel comfortable and assist you in enjoying the destination. Michelin will continue to develop its mobility-related business with the principle of benefiting people, the planet, and profit."

RECOGNIZING EFFORTS IN SUSTAINABILITY 持続可能性への取り組みを評価

地球を守ることも私たちの使命だと須藤社長は語ります。ミシュラ ンは 2050 年までにタイヤを 100％持続可能にするカーボンニュー トラルを目指していますが、料理の分野でもサスティナビリティ（持 続可能性）に大きな力を注いでいます。サスティナビリティに取り 組むレストランに光を当てる「ミシュラングリーンスター」の選定 はその大きな柱です。インスペクターがレストランに赴いた際、「サ ステイナブル・ガストロノミーにいかに貢献しているかの調査を一 緒に行っています」と三輪氏。例えば、食材をすべてあますところ なく使うフードロスの取り組みや、CO2 を出さないような努力など が評価されます。新たに選ばれた現代風料理の「ノル／ nōl」をは じめ、今回は 11 軒が掲載されました。 また、新しい取り組みの一環として「セレクテッドレストラン」を 導入。「星」やビブグルマン（価格以上の満足感が得られる料理） の選定までには至らないものの、インスペクターが「ぜひミシュラ ンガイドユーザーの皆様にご紹介したい」と思う隠れた名店 194 軒

The Role of Chefs as Envisioned by Yoshiki Tsuji 料理を通じた社会貢献：辻芳樹が見据える料理人の役割とは

Tsuji Culinary Institute, heralded as the " World's Three Major Culinary Schools" of the culinary world, has been a cornerstone of culinary education since its establishment in 1960, with over 140,000 graduates making their mark both in Japan and internationally. Yoshiki Tsuji took over from his father, Shizuo Tsuji, in 1993, becoming the president of the Tsuji Culinary Institute and representative of the Tsuji Group. Focusing on education, Tsuji also oversaw the cuisine at the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit in 2000 and served as the executive producer for the G20 Osaka Summit dinner in 2019. Having been awarded the Chevalier of the National Order of Merit by the French Republic, and serving as a judge for the "Culinary Masters" program by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, as well as on committees for the evaluation of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage, Tsuji has been actively engaged in promoting and advancing food culture. : WHAT LED YOU TO THE WORLD OF COOKING? A:

It was my father's influence that led me to the culinary world. Since founding the Tsuji Culinary Institute in 1960, he instilled in me from around the age of five the principle of always thinking when eating, a mindset that was deeply ingrained in me by the time I started elementary school. Having spent 49 years eating thoughtfully, I consider myself among the few who have truly experienced food as a profession. Growing up in a family that taught cooking, the process of eating thoughtfully, understanding, and then conveying that understanding, all connected for me.

What does "eating thoughtfully" mean to you?

For me, cooking is not about whether something tastes good or bad. Of course, you instantly know whether you like something or not, but that's secondary. You need to eat, interpret, and analyze. What is the flavor profile?

What philosophy did the creator have in mind when making this dish? I believe cooking should not be subjective. Only by analyzing and interpreting objectively can you truly understand. This is something I haven't often expressed in words, but it's a lesson that's been taught to me since childhood, and I've come to understand it over the decades.

How has the way cooking is taught changed over the years?

When learning to cook, the first thing you rely on is the recipe, the blueprint for cooking. Initially, you follow the recipe. However, merely following recipes is just tracing. Memorizing thousands of recipes to create a large repertoire is important, but knowing a lot of recipes doesn't mean you've mastered cooking. To truly master cooking, you need to remember facts not written in the recipe. Traditional cooking schools that focused on simply memorizing and reproducing delicious recipes were not enough. If you build a house with an incomplete blueprint, it will collapse. Similarly, cooking cannot be completed with recipes alone. The entire process of making the dish is the blueprint. The act of "teaching cooking" has not changed since the school opened in 1960, but the way we teach has evolved.

What are your thoughts on culinary trends?

In today's world, where information is shared instantly across the globe, there is no "cutting edge." Something becomes popular immediately. In the past, culinary trends would shift over long periods, ten or twenty years, especially with French cuisine. The interpretation of "gastronomy" has 121

also evolved. In the 1960s, it implied something more luxurious and highend. Today's "gastronomy" is more accessible. You don't need to be able to cook; you can captivate with photos on social media. The current trend emphasizes visual appeal. However, classics represent an unsurpassable standard of perfection. Our goal is to distill the essence of these timeless elements amid changing times and carry them forward. Classics provide the best hints.

Please share your thoughts on social contribution in the culinary world.

To talk about social contribution, the culinary profession itself must be sustainable. Without the necessary knowledge, social contribution becomes mere fashion, ending as nothing more than lip service. As a school, we prioritize instilling a mindset of social contribution. From my international experiences, I've observed that Japanese, living in an island nation, tend to struggle with global applicability. This applies to environmental issues as well, where global movements are often viewed through a purely Japanese lens, which is not effective. We need to cultivate a global nationalism.

Even if insect eating becomes popular worldwide, Japan must find its own solutions. Building individuals with universal international applicability is the greatest social contribution our school can make.

To the students of the Tsuji Group and Tsuji Culinary Institute, a message reads, "No matter how many recipes you memorize, if you are satisfied with that alone, your growth ends there. Conversely, if you can develop ideas from even a single recipe, the possibilities are limitless." This emphasizes not just learning to cook but learning how to study cooking. Tsuji's philosophy and spirit of "eating thoughtfully and considering the philosophy of the creator" will be passed down to the younger generation learning to cook.

料理の世界に入ったきっかけを教えてください。 料理の世界に入ったきっかけは、父の影響です。 1960 年に辻調理師学校を開校した父は、僕が５歳 くらいから「食べる時には必ず考えて食べろ」と教 育され、小学校に入る頃から「食べる時には考える」 という精神を植え付けられました。 僕はかれこれ 49 年「考えて食べて」きたわけで、 仕事として食べる実体験を積んできた数少ない人間 だと思います。そして家業が料理を教える仕事だっ たので、食べて考え、理解してそれを人に伝えると いうことが、すべて繋がりました。 「考えて食べる」とは？ 僕にとって料理は美味しいか美味しくないかではあ りません。もちろん、瞬間的には好きか嫌いかの感 覚は出ますが、それはすべて 後回し。食べて、それを解釈 して分析して。どのような味 なのか、作った人がどのよう な哲学で作ったのかを考えな いといけません。 料理は主観的であってはなら ないと思っています。全て客 観的に分析して解釈すること で初めて理解できる。こうい う気持ちはあまり言葉で示し てきませんでしたが、幼い頃 から教えられてきたことが自 分の中で何十年もかけてようやくわかってきたとこ ろです。

料理のトレンドについてどのようにお考えでしょうか。 全世界が情報を瞬時に共有できる現代には、「最先 端」というものが存在しません。すぐに誰かがポピ ュラーにしてしまう。昔は料理のトレンドは 10 年、 20 年くらいの長いスパンで動いていました。特に フランス料理はそうですね。昔は「高級料理」とい うとフランス料理しかなかったですし。「ガストロ ノミー」という言葉の解釈もどんどん変化していま すね。60 年代はもう少し贅沢で高級感があって、 それがこの世界の潮流でした。でも今の「ガストロ ノミー」はもっと手軽。料理ができなくても、SNS で写真で魅せることができます。昨今のトレンドは ビジュアル性なんです。しかし、クラシックは絶対 に越えられない完成品。我々の目標は時代の変化の 中でも本物をつまみ取って、未来に繋げていくこと です。クラシックは最高の ヒントになり得るのです。 調理界における社会貢献の ありかたについて考えをお 聞かせください。 社会貢献を語るには、そも そも料理人という職業に対 してサステイナナブルでな いといけないと思います。 社会貢献をするための知識 を持たなければただのファ ッションでしかなく、きれ いごとで終わってしまう。そのために、学校として は社会貢献のマインドを植え付けることを大切にし ています。僕が海外に出て経験したことですが、日 本人は島国で生きているので国際通用性を持ちにく いんです。環境問題にしても、世界の動きをそのま ま日本の問題としても見てしまう。それでは意味が なく、グローバルなナショナリズムを持たなければ なりません。例えば世界で昆虫食が流行っても、日 本は日本で問題を解決すべきなんです。普遍的な国 際通用性を持った人間づくりをしていくことが、学 校としての最大の社会貢献だと思っています。

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN CULINARY ARTS

料理の教え方は昔と比べてどう変化しているのでし ょう。 料理を学ぶときにまず頼るのは、料理の設計図であ るレシピですよね。最初は、レシピを見てなぞる。 しかしレシピ通りに作るだけでは、ただなぞってい るだけです。１万ものレシピを丸暗記して引き出し をたくさん作るのも大切ですが、それは料理をたく さん知っているだけで料理が身についたことにはな りません。料理を身につけるには、レシピに書かれ てない事実を覚えなければいけません。なので、昔 の料理学校のように、単になぞって丸暗記して美味 しく作れるようにするだけでは駄目なんです。 建築に例えると、完成していない設計図で家を建て たら潰れてしまいますよね。料理だって、レシピだ けで完結するものではありません。レシピに書かれ ている工程だけでなく、料理を作るプロセス全体が 設計図なのです。「料理を教える」という行為自体 は 1960 年の開校以来、いまも全く変わっていませ ん。しかし、教え方は進化してきたと思います。

辻調グループ・辻調理専門学校の学生に向けた言葉 に「どれほどレシピの数を覚えても、そこで満足し てしまっては成長が終わってしまう。逆にたった一 つのレシピからでも自分で発想する力があれば可能 性は無限に広がる」という一節があります。「だか ら単に料理だけでなく『料理の勉強の仕方』を身に 付けてもらう」のだと。 「食べて解釈して作り手の哲学を考える」辻氏の姿 勢とスピリットは、料理を学ぶ若い世代に受け継が れていくのです。 Gen de Art Mar 2024

L a s t yea r, Ja p a n's ta l l e s t sk ys c ra p e r, "Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower" in Tokyo's Minato Ward (64 floors above ground, 5 floors underground), was completed and has recently opened. On its 33rd floor, "Dining 33" is produced by one of Japan's leading French cuisine chefs, Kiyomi Mikuni. The restaurant boasts a "Japonism" approach, predominantly using Tokyo's "Edomae" ingredients while incorporating abundant Japanese tastes. This venue represents a new frontier for Chef Mikuni, showcasing his long years of creativity, tradition, and quality. 日本一の超高層ビルとして昨年竣工し、この ほど開業した 「麻布台ヒルズ 森 JP タワー」 （東 京都港区、地上 64 階・地下 5 階）。その 33 階に入る「Dining 33」は日本屈指のフラン ス料理のシェフ、三國清三氏がプロデュース しています。東京の「江戸前」食材を中心に 用いるとともに、日本のテイストをふんだん に盛り込んだ「ジャポニゼ」を掲げる同店。 三國シェフの新境地、長年の創作で培った伝 統とクオリティの饗宴を伝えます。

On the 33rd floor of Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower, "Dining 33", produced by Kiyomi Mikuni, has opened against the backdrop of Tokyo's magnificent scenery. The number 33 is significant and meaningful to Mikuni, as it is part of his name. Directly in front of the restaurant on the 33rd floor of the 330-meter Mori JP Tower, stands the 333-meter Tokyo Tower, built in Showa 33 (1958). "I felt a strong connection when I was asked to take on this restaurant," he says.

For Mikuni, who turns 70 this year, a significant milestone in life, "Dining 33" is the culmination of his long career. "I have signed a 10year contract and plan to continue producing this place until I'm 80.

This will be the last career of my life," he states emphatically.

Since its opening, the 200-seat restaurant has been fully booked a month in advance, and its success is evident. "Aiming to always greet customers with a smile and provide a sense of security, we have focused particularly on the mental care and hospitality of our chefs and staff for the three months leading up to the opening, welcoming everyone in perfect condition," he explains.

Aiming for local production for local consumption, the menu is centred around Tokyo-grown and "Edomae" ingredients. "There are 10,000 farmers in Tokyo, and Tokyo Bay is home to 700 types of fish. Everything from beef, Shamo chicken, pork, to milk is produced in Tokyo. Even seasonings from sake to miso are available in Tokyo," says Mikuni. This is modelled after Italy's Slow Food movement. "Transporting goods from far away uses energy and creates negative energy like CO2. Therefore, we try to use ingredients produced within 1 kilometre. The aroma and flavour of the ingredients are better, and it saves energy. In Tokyo, it's not possible to stick to 1 km, but we try to use as many local products as possible."

"Dining 33", located on the 33rd f loor with a luxurious view of Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Bay, is not just about luxury. Mikuni's aim was to create

a place where many people can enjoy themselves casually. "The original concept was not to make it a high-end restaurant but to have many seats so that we can have many customers and create a lively, enjoyable space," says Mikuni. To connect with an affordable concept, it's named "Grand Bistro" instead of a restaurant.

Another unique feature is the "share style", which Mikuni may have introduced for the first time in French cuisine. French cuisine usually serves each dish separately, but this can be challenging for both servers and diners. "After enjoying the beautifully plated dishes visually, guests can share them amongst themselves. Our service staff can also provide a relaxed time for customers." The restaurant pays careful attention to both cuisine and service.

Abundant "Edomae" Ingredients

「江戸前」食材をふんだんに 食材の地産地消を目指し、東京産や「江戸前」の食材を中心にメニュー を構成しています。「東京には 1 万軒の農家さんがいて、東京湾には 700 種類の魚がいます。牛肉、シャモ、豚、牛乳の全て東京産のものが 存在します。調味料も東京には日本酒からお味噌まで全てあるんです」 と三國シェフ。 それは、イタリアのスローフードがモデル。「遠い場所から物を運ぶと、 エネルギーを使い、また CO2 などの悪いエネルギーが生まれます。です から、なるべく 1 キロ以内で生産された食材を使う。食材の香りも風味 もいいし、エネルギーをそんなに使わなくて済む。東京では 1km 以内と いうわけにはいきませんが、なるべく近郊産の物を使用しています」 東 京 タ ワ ー や 東 京 湾 の 絶 景 が 眼 前 に 広 が る 高 級 感 あ ふ れ る「Dining 33」。ただ三國シェフが目指した方向は、多くの人が気楽に楽しめる店。 133

「高級店にするのではなく、座席も多いのでいっぱいお客さんに来てい ただき、わいわいがやがやと楽しめる場所を作るというのが元々のコン セプトでした」と三國シェフ。 手頃なコンセプトにつなげるために、レストランではなく、「グランビ ストロ」と名付けています。 もう一つ特徴的なのが「シェアスタイル」。それは三國シェフがフラン ス料理でおそらく初めて導入したシステムです。フランス料理は 1 皿ず つ完成されたもの運びますが、それだと運ぶほうも食べるほうも大変。 「お 皿にきれいに盛り付けて出し目で楽しんでいただいた後は、お客様同士 でシェアして味わっていただく。サービススタッフも、お客様にゆとり を持った時間を提供できます」。料理とともにサービスにも繊細に心配 りしているのです。

Finally on the Starting Line Mikuni, who has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Tours and the Legion of Honour by the French President, boasts many great honours. In recent years, the international stature of Japanese chefs has been demonstrated, such as when Kei Kobayashi won three Michelin stars and Kenichiro Sekiya, the head chef of "Joël Robuchon", received the highest honours in French cuisine, the M.O.F, last June. French cuisine, which came to Japan with modernization in the Meiji era about 100 years ago, has taken root here. Mikuni comments on these achievements of Japanese chefs, "The Legion of Honor, Michelin three stars, and M.O.F were once only for the French, but after 100 years, we Japanese are now on the same starting line. From now on, both Japanese and French chefs need to strive for new heights in the culinary world together," he envisions the arrival of a new era.

その三國シェフは、トゥール大学から名誉博士号を授与 され、フランス大統領からは「レジオン・ドヌール」を 受けるなど、多大な栄誉を誇ります。また、近年では ミシュラン三つ星を小林圭氏が獲得したことや、昨年 6 月にフランス料理界最高峰の称号「M.O.F.」を「ジョエ ル・ロブション」総料理長の関谷健一朗し氏が受章した ことも、日本人シェフの国際的な地位の向上を示してい ます。明治時代の近代化と共に日本に伝わったフランス 料理が、この地に根付いて約 100 年。三國シェフは日 本人シェフのこれらの成果について、「『レジオン・ド ヌール』やミシュランの三つ星、M.O.F. はかつてフラ ンス人のみのものでしたが、100 年経って、我々日本 人も同じスタートラインに立てたと感じています。これ からは、日本人シェフもフランス人シェフも、お互いに 切磋琢磨しながら、料理の世界で新たな高みを目指す必 要がある」と新たな時代の到来を見据え、語りました。 Gen de Art Mar 2024
