With a rich background in museums spanning centuries, Demeester brings a unique perspective to their role at Kunsthaus Zürich. Having overseen the Frans Hals Museum, renowned for its focus on old Dutch masters, 17th-century modern Dutch art, and international contemporary art, they possess valuable experience in managing institutions that transcend time and cultural barriers.

Having previously worked in what Demeester describes as a "museum bazaar," where art from various eras intermingled, has shaped her approach at Kunsthaus Zürich. "It's fascinating to work with art that spans from the Middle Ages to the present day, bridging various cultural influences," She shares. She expresses her fascination with the interplay of art, objects, and ideas from different epochs, bridging cultural influences to create a captivating narrative.

Her broad perspective has prepared her to lead on a larger scale, igniting artistic connections within the walls of Kunsthaus Zürich.

Infusing an artist's perspective into the museum, Demeester emphasizes the fluidity of artistic connections that extend beyond the confines of art history. "Artists are not confined by the borders and divisions that art historians often impose. They see connections and dialogue across time," Demeester explains. The director highlights the museum's collaboration with artists such as Norwegian artist Ida Ekblad and Matias Faldbakken finding resonance in the Kunsthaus's collection.

Building upon her experiences in the Netherlands, where museums are renowned for their audience-centric approach, Demeester strives to create an inclusive environment at Kunsthaus Zürich.

She recognizes the importance of communicating with non-expert audiences, employing accessible yet intellectually stimulating language, and fostering participatory experiences. The museum's programming embraces a "sandwich" or "buffet" approach, featuring both renowned and lesser-known artists. This dynamic and inclusive exhibition environment provides all kinds of artists with valuable exposure and a platform to express their voices.

Demeester's approach to making older art relevant for younger generations involves connecting it with contemporar y ar t . By establishing dialog ues between artists from different eras, Kunsthaus Zürich aims to create a bridge that transcends time, rendering art more relatable and accessible to diverse audiences. One project for the program 2024 exemplifying this approach is a dialogue between iconic artist Vincent van Gogh and Canadian Chinese artist Matthew Wong, highlighting the interconnectedness of artistic expression across generations. "By making these connections between artists from different times, we hope to make art more relevant."

The Intersection of Art, Architecture, and Contemporary Engagement at Kunsthaus Zürich Kunsthaus Zürich underwent an extensive renovation and expansion project, aiming to create a versatile and adaptable space for showcasing art. Designed by esteemed British architect Sir David Chipperfield, the new building strikes a ba lance bet ween cla ssica l dimensions and a blank canva s for ar tistic presentations. Demeester emphasizes that the focus should always be on the art within the museum, with the architecture serving as a backdrop to enhance the visitor's experience.

The redesigned building allows for various uses, including performances, exhibitions, and events, making Kunsthaus Zürich a dynamic and inviting space for visitors and artists alike. This architectural transformation aligns with Demeester's vision, ensuring the museum remains at the forefront of contemporary engagement while preserving and celebrating its artistic heritage.

While still in the early stages of their endeavors, Kunsthaus Zürich is reevaluating its role in the 21st century, aiming to connect art with societal debates. She shares, "We're looking to expand the discursive component of our side program and

explore methodologies for addressing complex histories, such as the Second World War." This commitment fosters a deeper understanding of art's role in contemporary society, encouraging dialogue and reflection on pressing issues.

Cai Guo-Qiang's innovative visual art goes beyond merely creating a visual impact to offer profound insights into the universe and the future of humanity.

His works consistently explore new forms of human empathy, set against an expansive cosmic perspective and a focus on the Earth as a whole. Director General Eriko Osaka had initially considered a collaborative project with Cai, aimed at an exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo in coordination with the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. "However, due to the expansion of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to abandon this plan," says Osaka. When the possibility of resuming the project emerged, both Osaka and Cai aimed for a cosmic exploration that differed from their original idea, involving works created with gunpowder explosions and light. Osaka was particularly interested in showcasing Cai's kinetic light installation titled 'Encounter with the Unknown'. "What I had in mind was to exhibit Cai's kinetic light installation, which has not yet been shown in Japan," the director states.

火球の背後にある物語 : 逢坂館長が語る蔡國強の創造的宇宙

蔡國強氏の革新的な視覚芸術は、単に視覚的なインパクトを超 え、宇宙と人類の未来への深い洞察を提供します。彼の作品は 常に開放的な宇宙的視野と、地球全体を見つめる視点を背景 に、新たな人間の共感を探求します。逢坂館長は、「東京オリ ンピック・パラリンピックの時期にあわせ、国立新美術館での 展覧会実現に向けて、蔡氏とプロジェクトを検討していまし た。しかし新型コロナ感染拡大などにより、この計画を断念し ました」と語ります。再検討の可能性が出てきた時、蔡氏と館 長が目指したのは、以前のプランとは異なる火薬爆発による作 品と光を使った宇宙的な探求でした。逢坂館長は特にキネティ ック・ライト・インスタレーション「未知との遭遇」を展示し たいと望んでいました。「私が意識したのは日本ではまだ見せ ていない蔡さんのキネティック・ライト・インスタレーション を展示することだった」と館長は語ります。 Gen de Art Oct 2023

Looking Back and Forward: Re-evaluation of the 'Primeval Fireball' Meanwhile, Cai took the opportunity during self-isolation to reflect on his career. He particularly focused on the exhibition Primeval Fireball held in Tokyo in 1991. "The Primeval Fireball was a monumental solo exhibition, marking Cai's first in Japan," notes Osaka. The initial goal was to recreate all seven gunpowder drawings from that exhibition, but due to the pandemic and other factors, this became challenging. As a result, a mix of old and new was displayed. "Instead of only showcasing the 1991 works, merging old with new for the 2023 version of 'Primeval Fireball ' turned out to be an excellent idea," Osaka firmly states. However, the central theme of the exhibition was not just looking back at Cai's past works but exploring how they connect to the future. Osaka highlights the approach Cai had since his first visit to Japan in 1986, emphasizing the importance of considering the Earth as a whole beyond the boundaries of the East and West. "Cai's perspective isn't about comparing the East and West; it's about transcending those boundaries and considering matters on a global scale. He believes a cosmic perspective is necessary," shares Osaka.

Earth and Humanity: Empathy Beyond Pandemics and Conflicts Amidst the chaos caused by the pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine, both Osaka and Cai maintain that it is crucial for humanity on Earth to cultivate empathy and mutual understanding from a cosmic vantage point. "While Cai's viewpoint might have initially been personal, it's now something that people worldwide resonate with and should share," emphasizes Osaka. "In times when the pandemic and international conflicts physically separate us, Cai's works strongly remind us that we all inhabit the same Earth." The exhibition 'Cai Guo-Qiang: Ramble in the Cosmos From Primeval Fireball Onward' seamlessly blends artworks from the previous Tokyo solo exhibition with new 17

creations crafted during the pandemic, exemplifying Cai's creative odyssey that spans across the past, present, and future. Through this exhibition, visitors can reaffirm their existence through Cai's visual artworks and gain a fresh perspective that sees the entire universe as one community. The exhibition presents a view of our shared planet and the vast cosmos around it using Cai's artworks, providing an opportunity to ponder our place within.

The Role of Art: Understanding and Deepening Empathy Ramble in the Cosmos – From Primeval Fireball Onward highlights the importance of adopting a broad perspective when addressing the various challenges humanity faces. The art conveys that it extends beyond mere admiration of beauty, serving as a conduit for us to comprehend ourselves and the world, ultimately fostering deeper human empathy and understanding.

Bond with Japan: Donations to Iwaki and Gratitude Fireworks Following the East Japan earthquake, Cai sold his works and allocated the proceeds to aid the victims in Iwaki. "The people of Iwaki used the donations to plant cherry blossom trees, starting the Project to Plant Ten Thousand Clerry Blossom Trees to commemorate the deceased and provide for the future generations. As a tribute and show of gratitude, Cai launched fireworks for the people of Iwaki," shares Osaka. Further underscoring the profound connection underpinning the exhibition, Osaka affirms, 'This is more than just an exhibition; it is a narrative interwoven with profound human relationships. Cai, an artist of Chinese origin, reflecting on his roots as an artist supported by the ordinary citizens of Iwaki, shapes the essence of this exhibition through his subsequent journey. The bond of creativity and friendship between them will surely continue to grow." Osaka concludes.

世界がパンデミックやウクライナの戦争により混乱し、未来が不透明 な状況でも、逢坂館長と蔡氏は、宇宙からの視点を持つことで、地球 上の人類が互いに共感し、理解し合うことが重要だと考えています。 「蔡さんの視点は、最初こそ蔡さん自身のものであったかもしれませ んが、現在は世界中の人々が蔡さんに共感し、共有すべきものです」 と逢坂館長は述べています。「パンデミックや国際的な紛争が私たち を物理的に分断している今、蔡さんの作品は、宇宙からの視点を通し て、全ての人間が同じ地球に住んでいるという事実を強く意識させま す」。展覧会「蔡國強 宇宙遊 -〈原初火球〉から始まる」は、過去 の東京での個展「原初火球」における作品と、新型コロナウイルスの パンデミック時に作成された新作品とを組み合わせるとともに、過 去、現在、未来をつなぐ蔡氏の創造の軌跡を反映しています。この展 覧会を通じて、来館者は蔡氏の視覚芸術作品から自己の存在を再確認 し、宇宙全体を一つのコミュニティと見なす新たな視点を得ることが できます。展覧会は蔡氏の芸術作品を用いて、人類が共有する地球と いう惑星、そしてそれを取り巻く広大な宇宙という視野を提示し、そ の中での自己の位置を考える機会を提供します。

日本との絆 : いわきへの寄付と感謝の花火

Please share with us the inspiration behind the current exhibition "Ramble in the Cosmos - From Primeval Fireball Onward."

In 2019, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread, I found myself stranded in the rural areas of New Jersey, revisiting the manuscripts from my time in Japan and reliving my experience. During that time, I was passionately contemplating the social and environmental issues of the 20th century, such as materialism and the future of our ecological environment and universe. I pondered over these issues as if I were an extraterrestrial.

Reality often felt constraining, but the stars in the sky were always like guiding lights, illuminating my “ramble in the cosmos”... Unbeknownst to me, this laid the groundwork for the NACT exhibition, Ramble in the Cosmos .

is the lack of doctrine,” “to be free and at one’s ease, to be natural and of oneself ”––still continue to guide my imagination as it soars through the skies to plant seeds that blossom in different cultures across the Earth.

I was surprised to find no record of my thoughts on the process of moving from Japan to the United States. I could only tell from the sketches for various projects that I was already in New York. I had left the place where I had put down my roots and forayed into a world unknown to me then—but from a cosmic perspective, did it look like I had simply moved houses in the same village? At the same time, I can also see how I grew less and less metaphysical over time, redirecting my attention to sociopolitical realities.

The problems of the Western world became my own problems. In retrospect, I understand that while I was in Japan, the problems of the Eastern world were more or less my problems, too.

After arriving in Japan, I began to base my consideration and creation in the notion of “humanity in the cosmos and the cosmic nature in humans.” My aim was to transcend the limits of matter and space-time and to seek the truth of an eternal connection between humans and the universe. I also gradually transitioned from “borrowing from primordial time” and “borrowing from nature” to a cosmology based on the relationship between mankind and nature, including a more holistic view integrating mankind, art, and nature. I came to recognize that the essence of gunpowder is the same as the energy and spirit that human beings possessed from the beginning of their evolution, as well as the essence of the primordial universe. This exhibition showcases various works from different stages of your artistic career, including periods in China, Japan, and the United States.

How have the cultural backgrounds of these regions influenced your artistic development?

In 1984, I began to create works in my hometown of Quanzhou using gunpowder as a medium, in search of destruction and regeneration, as well as the rule of things reversing at their extremes. My use of gunpowder was also linked to my youthful rebellion against societal control.

become more than just a means.

In September 1995, I received a grant from the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) for the Japan–U.S. Artist Exchange Program and moved to New York. While many people came to the United States to seek gallery representation or strive to exhibit in art museums, I applied to enter the Nevada Nuclear Test Site, where I then held in my hand a small tube containing gunpowder extracted from firecrackers and exploded a small “mushroom cloud.” It is both a tribute to the 20th century, aka the “American Century,” and a questioning of whether the iconic visual symbol of the 20th century is contemporary art, or, in fact, a colossal mushroom cloud. Such provocative questioning was what I did first upon arriving in the United States, and constituted my debut. The artwork conveyed a sense of crisis in human civilization, symbolized by nuclear power, and echoed the concept of my earlier Projects for Extraterrestrials: humanity’s longing to venture into space, to search for superior extraterrestrial civilizations, and to help overcome the challenges of humankind.

My works were soon exhibited and collected at the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and more. In 1999, I won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Biennale. Many of my works started to revolve more around the themes of the fate of humanity, as well as historical and socio-political issues.

This also reflected the transformations of my art nurtured within a Western cultural context and environment.

The dialogue between Cai you and the universe as well as the invisible world is a central theme in your exhibition. Particularly in installations like "Primeval Fireball" and "Encounter with the Unknown," how do you convey this dialogue through your artwork?

Primeval Fireball consists of seven gunpowder screen drawings, arranged in the shape of a blast wave; it was an installation that declared my statements and the future projects I aspired to realize. The Projects for Extraterrestrials series is oriented toward extraterrestrials, and also prompts humankind to reflect on the issues faced by humans on the earth. Conversely, the Projects for Humankind series imagines a distant future when humans leave the earth, raising the question of what we, as humans, should do both now and then. Both series express my awareness of the crises that come from being a terrestrial inhabitant, where civilization has evolved to the point of potential self-destruction.

Encounter with the Unknown originated from my explosion event of the same name, which I realized in 2019 in Cholula, Mexico. 500 years after the arrival of the Spaniards in Mexico, I invited six Mexican families involved in traditional fireworks production—who had competed with one another for generations—to collaborate. Using thirteen traditional firework towers known as castillos, we presented a story of collisions among different cultural cosmologies in the night sky. Mexican pyrotechnic maestros handcrafted the patterns based on my designs, using traditional techniques to construct the towers. The fireworks’ propulsion created simple mechanical movements.

Today, this spectacle has transformed into an LED installation like a sketch of light, driven by electric motors and controlled by computers. It has become a vast, horizontal “cosmic jungle.”

Beginning with the nature-based cosmology of Mayan civilization, the work integrates various images of “departing from gravity and embracing the universe” borrowed from different civilizations and cosmologies. It expresses mankind’s longing for the universe since ancient times, conveying that human beings—with all our uncertainties about the future—yearn for an unknown world more than ever. The installation articulates images of kaleidoscope-like galaxies, the ancient Chinese legend of Wanhu attempting to travel to outer space, and modern space launch pads. Astronauts orbiting the earth, Gagarin, Prehistoric Man and Extraterrestrials, Einstein, Hawking, flying saucers, and frolicking cherubs also make their appearances.

Gunpowder has become a distinctive medium in your artistic practice. Could you please share the significance of using gunpowder as a creative tool and how it enables you to convey your artistic vision?

With my personality, I tend to overthink and be meticulous, which is quite like my father, whose paintings reflect his way of being, too rational and timid. I had wished to get rid of this kind of personality since I was young, to be unlike my father, so I found this uncontrollable material to destroy myself first and foremost. It also emancipated me from the strict control imposed by the suppressive society.

火薬を創作ツールとして使用することの意義と、火薬がどのよ うに芸術的ビジョンを伝えることを可能にしているのか、お聞 かせください。 私はいつも物事を慎重に、厳格に考えすぎる性格で、この点は 父とよく似ています。絵画においても、人生においても、過度 に理性的で慎重な傾向があります。しかし、私は子供の頃か ら、このような性格から脱却したい、父のようになりたくない と考えていました。その為、制御不能な素材を見つけ、まずは 自分自身を破壊したいと強く思っていました。

Throughout your career, you have explored themes related to the universe, the invisible world, and ancient Eastern philosophies, including Laozi's concept of the origin of the universe. How have these influences shaped your artistic approach and the themes you explore in your artworks?

The two cores of my art are to express the unseen world though visible means, and themes related to the cosmos.

キャリアを通じて、宇宙、目に見えない世界、そして古代東洋 哲学、すなわち老子の宇宙の起源の概念を探求してきました。 このような影響は、芸術的アプローチや作品で探求するテーマ をどのように形作っていますか ? 私の芸術における核心は二つあります。「目に見えるものを通 して目に見えないものを表現すること」、「宇宙をテーマにす ること」です。

From a young age, I grew up with beliefs in feng shui, witchcraft, and qigong, which were prevalent in my hometown. This instilled in me a profound awe of the invisible world. Feng shui involves adjusting unseen energies (qi) to create a harmonious environment. I have been a practitioner of feng shui in both art and life. The feng shui philosophy of "internal energy generating, external energy forming, and internal and external multiplying, feng shui naturally exists" embodies a state of being in harmony and balance.

Traditional Chinese medicine, for me, encompasses a knowledge system and methodology for achieving unity between the inner and outer universe.

I have often integrated traditional Chinese medicine and natural therapies into my artistic works.

My interest in the cosmos began during my youth when I gazed at the stars and listened to mythical legends. I further delved into cosmology through readings, from Chinese astrophysicist Fang Lizhi to Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time. For a long time, I carried Carl Sagan's Cosmos with me during my extensive travels.

My cultural values and methodology encompass not only the principles of ying-yang, the law of opposites, and destruction and construction found in the I Ching, but also the harmonious and inclusive spirit of the Doctrine of the Mean. In my life as well as art, I pay attention to feng shui and the flow of energy. From every blade of grass to the cycle of life and death, and the imagination of heaven ... I believe in the unseen world and want to believe in our ancestors, including my departed grandmother, whose soul lingers within the 95% incomprehensible dark energy of the universe, or in the spacetime from another dimension.

子どもの頃から、風水、魔術、気功への信仰から、目に見えな い世界への畏敬の念を育んできました。 風水は目に見えないエネルギー ( 気 ) を調整することで、調和 のとれた環境を作り出します。私は芸術においても生活におい ても、風水の考え方を実践しています。「内なる気は萌え生 じ，外なる気は形を成す。内外の気が相乗すれば，風水が自ら 成る」という風水哲学は、風水は陰陽の調和から生み出される ことを意味します。私にとって中医学は、内宇宙と外宇宙の統 一を実現するための知的で方法論的な体系を含んだもので、中 医学や自然療法をこれまでに何度も作品に取り入れてきまし た。 私の宇宙への興味は、十代の頃に星空を見上げ、神話や伝説を 読むことから始まり、その後、宇宙学の書籍を読むようになり ました。天体物理学者の方励之からスティーヴン・ホーキング の『ホーキング、宇宙を語る−ビッグバンからブラックホール まで』という宇宙学の本を読みました。また長い間、私はカー ル・セーガンの「COSMOS」を長旅に持ち歩いていました。 私の文化的価値観と方法論には、易経の陰と陽、物事の両極端 と破壊と建設だけでなく、中庸の調和と寛容の精神も含まれて います。私は生活と芸術の両方で風水と気の力を大切にしま す。自然の草木から、人間の生と死、天の想像力まで。私は見 えない世界を信じ、百歳で旅立った祖母を含む先祖には霊魂が あり、その 95% は宇宙の底知れぬ暗黒のエネルギー、あるい は別次元の時空の中にあると信じたいです。

HIGHLIGHTS ART BASEL IN BASEL 2023

The 2023 edition of Art Basel's flagship fair in Basel has concluded with a resounding success, leaving an indelible mark on the global art landscape.

With 284 galleries from 36 countries and territories participating, including 21 debutants, the event showcased a diverse and vibrant array of artistic talent.

Two standout highlights of this edition were the Unlimited and Parcours sectors.

Unlimited, curated by Giovanni Carmine, offered an unprecedented glimpse into the world of large-scale installations and performances. The sector featured 76 remarkable presentations that pushed the boundaries of artistic expression.

Meanwhile, the Parcours sector invited attendees to explore art beyond the traditional fairgrounds, with artworks strategically placed throughout the city.

Finding Inspiration: A Creative Upbringing Himid's artistic journey was nurtured by her mother, a textile designer, who greatly influenced her from a young age. Growing up in an environment immersed in discussions about art, colours, patterns, furniture, and clothes, Himid developed a profound appreciation for the beauty and craftsmanship in everything. Fondly recalling those formative years, she shared, "We would regularly visit department stores and art galleries, exposing me to diverse forms of artistic expression." This upbringing not only shaped her artistic sensibilities but also fueled her curiosity and desire to create.

Himid's path as an artist initially led her to theatre design school and art school. While her aspirations leaned towards working in theatre, she encountered challenges entering that field.

However, an unexpected opportunity emerged when she began curating and creating artwork for restaurants. Reflecting on this turning point, Himid explained, "So, I started working with someone who owned restaurants. Simultaneously, I began showcasing artists' work in those restaurants, which marked the beginning of my involvement in curating and creating artwork for spaces rather than theatrical productions." This shift would set the stage for the remarkable artistic journey that lay ahead.

Cultural Identity as a Driving Force For Himid, art serves as a medium through which she strives to make herself and other African diasporans visible. She reflects on a time when representation of her community was scarce, particularly in mainstream media. In the 1980s, Himid and her fellow artists aimed to create art that reflected their lives, hopes, and histories, challenging the prevailing narrative. She explained, "We wanted to strike a balance and produce images that depicted and made visible our everyday experiences." By incorporating her culture, heritage, and identity into her work, Himid offers an alternative perspective and amplifies the voices of marginalised communities.

Himid firmly believes that art plays a vital role in promoting social change and addressing systemic issues. Contrary to those who view art as mere decoration, she asserts that it holds profound significance. Art has the power to inspire conversations, exchange ideas, and evoke emotions. Himid emphasied, "Art serves as a starting point for difficult conversations, enabling communication on a deeper level." Through engagement with art, people discover different perspectives, find common ground, and identify shared aspirations for change.

At Art Basel in Basel 2023, Himid’s life-size installation A Fashionable Marriage , presented

by Hollybush Gardens, took centre stage as part of ‘Unlimited’. Created in 1986, the work directly references the fourth scene of William Hogarth’s 18th-century satire on high society, Marriage à-la-Mode: The Toilette. Himid reimagines Hogarth’s scene to stage her own commentary on the racism and sexism of the 1980s art world and

the fraught politics of its time. She explains ‘I was very interested in the 1980s about how invisible black people were in the cultural landscape... I wanted to make a piece of work that made fun of the historical work but also told the story of how European aristocracy used African people as servants who they did not pay.’

Hailing from the enchanting city of Edinburgh, Callum Innes was born in 1962 and honed his artistic skills at Gray's School of Art Aberdeen, where he studied drawing and painting from 1980 to 1984. He furthered his artistic education with a post-graduate degree from Edinburgh College of Art in 1985. Exhibitions at The Scottish Nationa l Ga ller y of Modern A r t in 1992 and Tate Britain in 1995 quickly solidif ied Innes’s impor tance within contemporar y ar t world.

These early successes were further compounded by major solo and group exhibitions around the world in New York, Sydney, Paris, London and Edinburgh to mention a few.

Innes's artistic journey is deeply inf luenced by the captivating landscapes that surround him, as he splits his time between Scotland and Norway.

The natural beauty of these locations serves as a wellspring of stimulation for his creative process.

"The inspiration for my colour choices comes from the landscapes I encounter while living between Edinburgh and Oslo," Innes explains.

The interplay of light in nature, the shifting hues of the sky, and the ever-changing palette of the environment find their way into his artistic vision.

W hen ob s er v i n g I n ne s's a r t work , one c a n discern the influence of these natural landscapes.

Although his work is not a direct representation of scenery, it carries a sense of the play of light and the harmonious blending of colours found in these environments. Innes’s colour selection draws from these lived experiences, colours which blend and emerge naturally during the painting process. This intuitive approach allows the colours to f luidly mix into a black ground, creating a visual symphony that unfolds with each brushstroke.

At the heart of his creative process lies the concept of dissolving. Deep pigments are meticulously applied in layers, only to be brushed over with turpentine, breaking down sections of paint and leaving behind watery, trace elements.

This repetitive process of painting, dissolving, and repainting is integral to Innes's making process. It is through this method that he constructs depth, imbuing his artworks with a profound sense of history and contemplation. The oblique panels of dense pigments become embedded and fortified, while the subtle trickles and washes of liquified paint serve as poignant reminders of the fragility inherent in both art and life.

Though Innes's works may initially appear minimal or geometric, they possess a delicate imperfection that adds depth and intrigue. Hand drawn lines and softly defined shapes introduce a human touch, inviting viewers to engage with the artworks on a more personal and introspective level. Innes has developed a unique language of monochrome painting that sets him apart in the art world. His paintings often feature colour fields within geometric grids or bilateral divisions, showcasing a delicate balance between structure and freedom.

One of Innes's ongoing series, known as the ‘Exposed Paintings’, embodies a process of meticulous addition and subtraction. Each artwork in this series undergoes a transformation as layers of pigments are applied onto the canvas and then delicately removed with washes of turpentine. This method, which Innes refers to as "unpainting", reveals glimpses of the paint's former colours as the black oil paint erodes, unveiling deep violet or green hues. The traces left behind—trickles of seeping paint, rivulets, and dark edges—tell the story of the artistic process itself, encapsulating the passage of time and the layers of history contained within the artwork.

Innes cites American Abstract Expressionist Barnett Newman as a major influence on his work. Newman's exploration of colour and form resonates with Innes, shaping his approach to creating compositions that captivate the viewer's eye and engage them on a profound level.

Paris is unrivalled both for its cultural heritage and its standing at the forefront of contemporary culture. It has been central to the development not only of art, but also of creative industries such as film, fashion, music, and design. The city is home to one of the world’s leading and most exciting gallery scenes; it is a global metropolis that stands out thanks to the creativity and open-mindedness of its people. This fosters exceptional ideas and exchanges across cultural disciplines.

In this engaging interview, we connect with Clément Delépine, the director of the Paris+ par Art Basel fair, to delve into the exciting prospects awaiting the second year of Paris+ par Art Basel in 2023.

What opportunities and challenges does the upcoming second edition of Paris+ par Art Basel in October have in comparison to last year's event?

Our public program, which is free and accessible to all, has been expanded and emboldened. We will present art and discourse in six locations across the capital, increasing Paris+ par Art Basel's footprint, while also renewing existing collaborations and establishing new ones with institutional partners, including the Musée du Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, the Beaux-Arts de Paris, and the City of Paris itself. Six prestigious international galleries will also participate in the fair for the first time. Furthermore, we are delighted to see that most travel restrictions have eased and look forward to welcoming a broader audience of art enthusiasts and collectors from around the world to the upcoming edition this October.

While the French government had lifted all COVID-19-related restrictions prior to the launch of Paris+ par Art Basel in 2022, travel restrictions were still in place in some other countries or regions. Our main challenge is linked to a significant change coming in 2024: We will be transitioning from the Grand Palais Éphémère to the spectacular Grand Palais, which is currently undergoing renovations. Although it may

seem distant, we are already working on the logistics of this exciting move.

For the 2023 edition, could you please provide further information about the selection process for each of the five public program locations with art exhibitions?

Projects are selected based on the quality of the proposal, its technical feasibility, and its alignment with the venue where it will be exhibited.

• Annabelle Ténèze, curator of the exhibition in the Jardin des Tuileries, reviewed the applications for that project in consultation with Paris+ par Art Basel and the Musée du Louvre.

• The Beaux-Arts project was chosen by the leadership of both Paris+ par Art Basel and Beaux-Arts.

• The Place Vendôme and Parvis de l’Institut de France projects were selected by the leadership of Paris+ par Art Basel, in agreement with the City of Paris.

• The Palais d’Iéna project emerged through a project-based process involving the leadership of Paris+ par Art Basel, the Palais d’Iéna, and Matthieu Poirier, the curator of the exhibition.

While the fair's leadership, curators, and collaborating institutions are responsible for selecting the projects, these are always presented by one or several galleries.

It's also important to note that all galleries – whether participating in Paris+ par Art Basel or not – can apply to present their work as part of the public program. This feature is unique to our Parisian show; in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong, galleries must participate in the main show to be eligible to apply to one of the projectbased sectors.

What are the reasons for choosing the Forum du Centre Pompidou as the venue for the Conversations program, and what messages or expectations will the institution convey at the fair?

The Centre Pompidou holds a central position in Parisian cultural life. Its diverse and rigorous programming spans multiple disciplines, from fine art to cinema and design. Our Conversations program, curated by Charles Teyssou and PierreAlexandre Matéos, similarly explores a multitude of areas that may extend beyond the classical definition of art. Our public programs are centered around daring, innovative, and ambitious ideas – also manifested through debates and discussions that won't shy away from contentious topics. Like other activations in the public program, Conversations are free of charge for everyone.

Which galleries stand out to you as the most interesting this year, and why?

Each gallery participating in Paris+ par Art Basel offers something distinct and unique. I encourage readers to explore our website (parisplus.artbasel.com), where they can find the complete list of participating galleries, discovering the astonishing variety of their programs – from hyper-contemporary Middle Eastern art to rare works by 20th-century masters

or outsider art. I am also eager to explore the solo presentations in the Galeries Émergentes sector, dedicated to emerging galleries.

What sets Paris+ par Art Basel apart from other Art Basel shows? Are there differences in strategy or positioning?

Paris+ par Art Basel is particularly dedicated to supporting the French gallery ecosystem.

The substantial presence of galleries with spaces in France – accounting for more than a third of all exhibitors – is indicative of this commitment. Fruitful and productive collaborations with Paris' cultural institutions also define the essence of the show. We believe that the scale, ambition, and quality of our public program reflect Paris+ par Art Basel's mission to create an event that resonates throughout the city, much like the content at its core. As we continue to evolve the fair, we are exploring new avenues to amplify and extend its reach, especially through collaborations with other cultural industries.

How do you envision Paris+ par Art Basel's role in supporting and nurturing the growth of young galleries and emerging artists?

The Galeries Émergentes sector plays a pivotal role in this regard. It is situated at the heart of the fair, providing young

galleries with a platform to introduce themselves to top-level collectors, curators, and patrons from around the world.

The sector is bolstered by the Galeries Lafayette group, whose jury will select one participating artist to exhibit at Lafayette Anticipations, one of Paris' most forwardthinking institutions, the following year.

Furthermore, the booth costs for the gallery presenting that artist at the fair will be reimbursed. We also consistently highlight emerging galleries' programming through our editorial content and social media channels.

Exhibitors in the Galeries Émergentes sector pay 50% less per square meter than those in the main sector of the fair. Applications to present artworks as part of the public program were open to all galleries, including those participating in the Galeries Émergentes sector.

We also strive to support the long-term progression of these galleries: this year, four galleries that participated in the Galeries Émergentes sector in 2022 will be part of the fair's main sector, enabling them to showcase the full scope of their program.

Providing them with this opportunity is crucial, as their growth contributes to a vibrant and diverse art ecosystem.

Can you tell us about the journey of organizing the first edition of Tokyo Gendai?

It's the inaugural edition of Tokyo Gendai, a five-year endeavor that has garnered considerable interest. This first year boasts a lineup of 73 participating galleries. The Tokyo bay area offers suitable locations for the fair: Makuhari, Chiba; Tokyo Big Sight; and Pacifico. Following consultations with stakeholders, Pacifico emerged as the optimal choice due to its transportation links, nearby amenities, and hotels.

How do you envision achieving Tokyo Gendai's goal of fostering connectivity within the art world?

Tokyo Gendai strikes a balance with Japanese and international art, creating an enriching experience for visitors. Witnessing the fair come to life after abstract planning is exhilarating. Tokyo Gendai provides a platform bridging Japan with Asia, Europe, and America, while Japan's rich culture and art scene magnetize international galleries and visitors. Our aspiration is to elevate connectivity within Japan, Asia, and the world.

How will Tokyo Gendai contribute to Japan's art community growth and sustainability?

This is Japan's first international-caliber art fair in three decades. Art fairs stimulate the market, attract buyers, and make the art scene more sustainable for artists and galleries.

We aim to further instill confidence and international recognition for Japan's art scene. What led to the conceptualization and establishment of Tokyo Gendai?

The idea germinated over five years. As part of our international art fair organization spanning six countries, The Art Assembly, we recognise the Asia continent's prominence within the art market and the huge potential of its different hubs. There is a phenomenal opportunity for the art market in Japan and Tokyo Gendai brings together more than 70 exceptional galleries from around the globe to one of the most dynamic and active art and design scenes in the world. The attainment of bonded status after 2020's tax deregulations exempting international galleries from upfront taxes was pivotal.

How will Tokyo Gendai cater to diverse preferences?

With 73 participating galleries, Tokyo Gendai boasts a mix of international (60%) and Japanese (40%) representation. Covering 10,000 square meters in Yokohama, it's the region's largest international art fair in years. Four sectors— “Galleries”, “Hana ‘Flower’”, “Eda ‘Branch’”, and “Tane ‘Seed’”—cater to various tastes. Our selection committee and consultative council ensure diverse representation and a distinctive sector dedicated to Japanese female artists, setting us apart.

What's Tokyo Gendai's distinctive selling point?

Tokyo Gendai uniquely includes 40% Japanese galleries alongside international ones. Extensive VIP programs expand cultural exposure beyond fair venues. The “Tsubomi ‘Flower Bud’” sector, highlighting Japanese female artists, adds to our distinctiveness. Tokyo Gendai prioritizes showcasing this uniqueness, setting the stage for a remarkable experience.

Takane has a wealth of experience across the art sector in Japan that has seen her work as the art director at Sezon Art Gallery in Tokyo as well as host of Tokyo FM radio program Sustainadays. As a result, "he was very willing to work on it, and we asked Nara to think about space and context. And as a result, he came up with the exhibition himself", he recalled.

Azabudai Hills

The upcoming gallery is strategically situated within Azabudai Hills, a renowned arts and culture complex, and is set to open its doors around the beginning or middle of May in 2024. Collaborating with acclaimed architects such as Thomas Heatherwick and Sou Fujimoto, the gallery's interior design promises to be a marvel of contemporary aesthetics. Atsuko Ninagawa Discusses: The Vision and Role of ART WEEK TOKYO

Art Week Tokyo, set to commence in November, is an annual celebration of contemporary art in Japan that attracts both local and international artists and art lovers. Under the directorship of Atsuko Ninagawa, the event harnesses her innate ability to connect with artists and her extensive experience working on large-scale art events to elevate the Japanese art scene’s global profile. Since establishing her own gallery, Take Ninagawa, in HigashiAzabu, Tokyo, in 2008, Ninagawa has dedicated herself to presenting contemporary Japanese artists from a global perspective. As the cofounder and director of Art Week Tokyo, she has expanded her vision to promote the broader Japanese art scene. We had the opportunity to hear from Ms. Ninagawa about her passion for art and her aspirations for Art Week Tokyo.

Could you describe your journey into the world of art and your career so far?

My pa rent s were bot h a c t iv i s t s , so I g rew up t h i n k i n g about how I cou ld sh ap e t he f ut u re a ndma ke a di f ference in societ y. I discovered my passion in art when I was in high school, and realised that art offers an outlet for us to express unique perspectives in response to social issues. I went on to study art history and theory at university, and gave further thought to my relationship with art. Debating between whether to pursue non-profit or commercial avenues, I explored both. I studied in the late '90s when the market wasn't as vibrant as now. My desire to establish a foundation for artists' livelihoods through the market led me to spend several years in New York. In 2008, after my return to Japan, I opened Ta ke Nina gawa in HigashiA zabu, dedicated to promot in g emerg in g a nd historically significant Japanese artists in a crossgenerational, international framework.

Over the years I have also served as a member of the selection committee of Art Basel in Hong Kong and co-founded the Japan Contemporary Art Platform.

Yet I continued to wonder how we could further support the growth of the Japanese and regional art ecosystem, and how we might leverage the solid art and cultural infrastructure here to open up more opportunities for the art communities—and then the concept for Art Week Tokyo came into shape in 2021.

Can you elaborate on the specific concept or theme for Art Week Tokyo 2023?

Through the program at Take Ninagawa I've worked

to present contemporary Japanese art in a global context. However, it’s still a struggle for Japanese artists and art to gain international recognition.

At the same time, globa l discussions about ar t ecosystems have intensified, while the emergence of mega-galleries has made it even more challenging for both emerg ing and established galleries to survive. And while new communication technology h a s m ade a r t more acce s sible t h a n ever, new markets can often lose sight of historic art values.

Then the pandemic came along and changed the way we engage with each other internationally.

The idea for the first edition of Art Week Tokyo in November 2021 emerged with the aim to overcome t hese cha l len ges. Our mission is to work w it h local peers to bring together the art communities in Tokyo while also connecting that ecosystem to regional and global communities.

What impact do you believe Art Week Tokyo will have on the Japanese art scene?

A r t Week Tok yo prov ides a plat form to bridge local and global ar t communities. We promote contempora r y a r t in Japa n by showca sin g ex h i bit ion s f rom pa r t icipat i n g g a l ler ie s a nd mu seu m s for broad aud iences . We a l so i nv ite international curators and other art professionals to visit and share their insights with the Japanese art scene. Furthermore, we are launching a new curated sales platform this year, AWT Focus, to support new interpretations of Japan’s history of modern and contemporary art. We hope to contribute to the evolution of the Japanese art scene by fostering engagement with the art here and helping people understand its value.

蜷川さんがアートの世界に関わるようになった経緯や、こ れまでのキャリアについて紹介していただけますか？ 親が市民活動をしており、自分自身が社会の一員としてど のように未来の形成に携われるかを考えるよう育てられま した。団体行動に苦手意識を持っていた高校生の時に、ア ートでは一対一の対話を通した社会問題への取り組みが可 能であると知り興味を抱きました。そこから大学で美術史 を勉強し、自分自身はどのようにアートと関わりたいのか を考え始めました。ノンプロフィットかコマーシャル、ど ちらにするか悩み両方勉強してきました。私が勉強したの は 90 年代後半で、当時のマーケットは今ほど活発ではあ りませんでしたので、マーケットの形成を通してアーティ ストの生活の基盤となる部分に関わりたいと考え、ニュー ヨークへ渡りました。2008 年には、「Take Ninagawa」 ギャラリーを東麻布に開設しました。 2023 年のアートウィーク東京の具体的なコンセプトやテ ーマについて教えていただけますか？ 私は 2008 年に「Take Ninagawa」ギャラリーを開設し、 コンテンポラリーアートを専門に扱うギャラリーとして、 国際的に日本のアートを紹介してきました。ですが、当時 は日本のアーティストやアートが国際的なアートシーンの 中で紹介される機会が少なくなっていた時代で、同時に国 際的なアートシーンでエコシステムについての議論が盛ん に行われるようになっていく時期でもありました。メガギ ャラリーが登場し、それに伴い若手のみならず中堅ギャラ リーの存続が難しい状況が生じ、それに対する問題解決策 についての議論が国際的に行われていました。同時に、新 しいコミュニケーションの到来で、アートはより広く受け 入れられるようになりましたが、アートの学術的な側面が 次第に軽視され、新しいマーケットが形成されていきまし た。そしてパンデミックが発生したことで、アート関係者 が議論を交わす国際的な交流の場所へアクセスできなくな ったのです。そういった背景を踏まえて、2021年にアー トウィーク東京を立ち上げることになりました。その為、 アートウィーク東京は、東京のアートシーンを作る人たち と一緒にエコシステムを構築し、日本のアートシーンと国 際社会を接続して、アートの学術的側面を広く共有するこ とで安定したマーケットの確立を目指しています。 アートウィーク東京が日本のアートシーンに与える影響に ついてどう思われますか？ アートウィーク東京は、国内外のアートコミュニティを繋 げる機会を提供します。参加ギャラリーや美術館の展覧会 を国内外に紹介することで、日本のアートのプロモーショ ンを行っています。また、国際的なアートシーンを担って いる方々を日本に招き交流の場を提供し、日本のアートシ ーンに国際的なフィードバックをもたらす役割を果たして います。さらに、今年から始まる「AWT FOCUS」という 「買える」展覧会を通じて、日本の近現代美術史を紹介し、 展示作品のより深い理解を促すと同時に、全作品の購入も できるという新しいスタイルのプログラムも提供していま す。アート愛好家やアーティストにとって、新しい交流の 場やアートの価値を共有する機会を提供し、日本のアート シーンの発展に寄与していくことを期待しています。 Gen de Art Oct 2023

Could you describe the criteria and process for selecting works to be displayed at AWT Focus?

The inaugural artistic director of AWT Focus is Kenjiro Hosaka, Director of the Shiga Museum of Art. When I gave him the brief of producing a n ex h ibit ion t hat cou ld con nec t Japa n’s modern and contemporary art histories into a cohesive narrative, he came up with the idea of focusing on Japanese abstract expression, encompassing ceramics and calligraphy. Art Week Tok yo’s par t icipat ing ga ller ies then proposed works in response to his concept.

Hosaka selected from those works, although he also had the option of actively seeking out works to fill in any gaps in his curatorial vision.

What elements do you prioritise as a director when it comes to art events?

Art Week Tokyo is first and foremost a communitydriven event. We provide a platform for our participating galleries and institutions to reach broader local and international audiences.

Contrary to common misconception, Art Week Tokyo is not an art fair. We further support the sharing of knowledge about Japanese art through educational programmes like AWT Talks, which debuts a headlining symposium

this year in addition to our popular Online Ta lk s series of lect ures and conversat ions on Japan’s art history. The AWT Bar offers a space for multisensory engagement with art through collaborations with other creative fields, including architecture and gastronomy, wh i le AW T Video showca ses v ideo work s selected by an international guest curator in a pop-up display in Marunouchi. We provide a free shuttle bus service that connects all 50 of the participating institutions and galleries as well as our Art Week Tokyo initiatives. We are committed to showcasing the value of Tokyo’s art and its creators, and by sharing information and knowledge, we aim to facilitate a healthy art market.

How do you introduce Japanese art to the global stage through Art Week Tokyo?

Art Week Tokyo undertakes various initiatives to present Japanese art on an international stage. By partnering with Art Basel, the world’s leading fair for modern and contemporary art, we provide opportunities for VIPs from around the world to visit Japan. We also invite curators from international museums to engage in discussions w i t h t hei r Ja p a ne s e p e er s . F u r t her mor e , we a l s o experiment with connecting art with other creative fields like gastronomy and architecture, pushing forward those who represent Japanese culture in the international art scene. Through our international press representatives, we also work with international media to spread the word about what we are doing.

Lastly, could you share your expectations for Art Week Tokyo 2023 and a message for the visitors?

For Art Week Tokyo 2023, we are once again connecting a l l venue s w i t h f r e e bu s s er v ic e a nd i nt r o duc i n g new programmes, such as childcare ser vices, events t a rget i n g ch i ld ren , a nd tou rs for t hose who m i ght f ind contemporary art challenging. On the method of drawing inspiration from nature Hiroshi Senju: Many students ask me, "How can I refine my creativity?" The key to walking your path is persistent observation. Whether it's nature or anything else, above all, it's important to develop your observational skills. Observe to investigate the cause when you think "why?". This is the important act of exploring one's unknown, as Leonardo da Vinci of the Renaissance era said. Through observation, you can discover the motif you were looking for. I emphasize the importance of developing observational skills to my students at university.

Why choose motifs of waterfalls and cliffs?

Hiroshi Senju: Consider the existence of Earth. It has moderate gravity, a moderate temperature, and water exists. These could be said to be the three major elements of the Earth. And these three major elements are symbolised by the waterfall itself. I deeply sense the significance of reconnecting with the fundamental elements of Earth's existence, especially in an era of advancing AI and digital technology. The motif of the waterfall transcends race, ethnicity, nationality, philosophy, and religion. I believe that demonstrating its existence is important for us to confront the problems of today.

なぜ滝や崖のモチーフを選ぶのですか ?

千住博氏 : 地球という存在を考えてみてくだ さい。地球には適度な重力があり、適度な温 度がある。そして、水が存在します。これら が地球の三大要素と言えるでしょう。そして、 この三大要素は滝そのものが象徴していま す。特に AI やデジタル技術が進化しているこ の時代において、地球という存在の基本に立 ち返ることの重要性を強く感じています。滝 というモチーフは、人種、民族、国籍、哲学、 宗教を超え、全ての生命に等距離で存在して います。その存在を示すことが、我々が現代 の諸問題に立ち向かうために重要だと私は思 っています。

アートの魅力は何だと考えていますか ?

千住博氏 : 私は古典技法に深く注目をしてい ます。それが日本画であろうと、ヨーロッパ のフレスコ画であろうと、中国の水墨画であ ろうと、これら古典技法に対する尊敬は人類 の歴史全体に対するリスペクトを示していま す。我々現代人も、古代の人々と何ら変わる ことなく同じ人間であり、そのため古典技法 は今日でも有効なメッセージや知恵を伝えて くれます。このような技法を尊ぶことは、歴 史と古いものを尊敬し、我々が同じ人間であ るという事実を自覚することにも繋がりま す。デジタル技術や AI、CHAT GPT などが どんなに進化しても、アートはそれだけでは 解決できない問題を解決する唯一の発想法で す。アーティストは新たな問いを生み出す存 在であり、人類の歴史を自身の問題として捉 え、そのメッセージ全てを超えて伝えていく ことができるのです。

Nature's Embrace What do you think is the charm of art?

Hiroshi Senju: I pay deep attention to classical techniques. Whether it's Japanese painting, European fresco painting, or Chinese ink painting, respect for these classical techniques represents respect for the entire history of mankind. We modern people are the same humans as the ancient people, and therefore the classical techniques can convey effective messages and wisdom today. Respecting such techniques is connected to respecting history and old things, and being aware of the fact that we are the same humans. No matter how much digital technology, AI, or CHAT GPT evolves, art is the only way of thinking that can solve problems that cannot be solved by those alone. Artists are beings that create new questions, perceive the history of mankind as their own problem to solve, and can convey unexpected solutions to those problems.

Points to note when exhibiting at exhibitions abroad Hiroshi Senju: We are the same humans and can be impressed by looking at things from the same perspective. It is important to exhibit with the consciousness that we are the same humans standing on the same side.

Do you have any advice for new artists?

Hiroshi Senju: I want to tell them that there is a lack of enthusiasm and I want them to cherish their respect for the motif and the paint more.

When asked about his outlook for the future, Hiroshi Senju cites "continually seeking new possibilities" as his creed. Could you provide us with insights into the history and founding of Kukje Gallery Seoul? What motivated you to establish the gallery in 1982, and how has it evolved over the years?

In the 1980s, the domestic art market in Korea was blooming, which led me to naturally consider establishing a gallery and help foster contemporary artists.

Since there were already several galleries that were working to introduce Korean artists to the domestic audience at that time, I initially focused on bringing international artists into Korea. Throughout my travels abroad, such as in the U.S., I was able to encounter the works of many masters. Most of these artists I formed a relationship with, in my early years, still work closely with the gallery; for example, we held a major museum-scale Calder show in April 2023, in collaboration with the Calder Foundation, and a Louise Bourgeois show in December 2021, which touched the hearts of many. My goal as a gallerist gradually became to abridge the Korean and international art scenes. As a prime example of the gallery’s commitment to this mission, we have hosted the exhibitions of prominent international artists including 81

Alexander Calder, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Julian Opie, Ugo Rondinone, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Candida Höfer across our spaces in Seoul and Busan and spearheaded the promotion of Dansaekhwa artists including Park Seo-Bo, Ha Chong-Hyun, Lee Ufan, and Kwon YoungWoo throughout the past four decades.

Kukje Gallery Seoul is renowned for its beautiful design. Could you share with us the design ideas and philosophy behind the gallery's architecture and layout?

Kukje Galllery in Seoul operates across four spaces; K1 (1987), K2 (2007), K3 (2012), and the Hanok (2022). As the gallery consists of four separate buildings that forms a “gallery cluster,” this allows great flexibility in organizing exhibitions of different genres and formats, as well as allows us to curate visitors’ exhibition-going experience.

I would like to highlight K1 first, as it was recently renovated as a multi-use art complex in 2020. The renovation, which took approximately two years

The K3 building, built in celebration of the gallery’s 30th anniversary, also holds a special place in my heart. Escaping the conventional gallery layout, K3 allows a broader scope of artworks and innovative installations to be shown, strengthening its experimental and functional possibilities.

From an architectural aspect, all peripheral features of the building were pushed out of the space to maintain the gallery’s cube form. The ceiling is surrounded by natural light, that can be adjusted and even completely darkened to create a black-box environment—a feature that allows us to show media art and light-sensitive works. Perceived by the architects SO-IL (Solid Objectives-Idenburg Liu), the building’s design was jointly acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, as a part of their permanent collection.

How do you perceive the gallery's role in shaping and contributing to both the local and global art land scape? What initiatives does the galler y undertake to foster cultural exchange and engagement within the art community?

A s a Kore a n g a l ler y t h at h a s for t u n at ely e s t a bl i s he d a n i nt er n a t ion a l r epu t a t ion throughout the past four decades, another particularly important responsibility for Kukje would be to promote Korean contemporary artists and masters, and firmly position them in the international discourse of art.

Our commitment to such mission ha s b e e n d e mon s t r a t e d i n m a ny o f ou r p a s t accomplishments, one out of several being Da nsaek hwa , Col latera l Event of t he 56t h International Art Exhibition la Biennale di Venezia in 2015. This exhibition was the very f irst to showcase the works of key masters who def i ne d Da n s a ek hwa’s development in Korean in the 1970s to the international artworld, providing an essential conceptual framework for global collectors, art-historians, a r t- ent hu sia s t s , a nd ot hers to appreciate this important movement. The presentation f e a t u r e d s o m e o f K u k j e G a l l e r y ’s m o s t impor tant ar tists such as Park Seo-Bo, Ha Chong-Hyun, Lee Ufan, and Kwon Young-Woo, spurring explosive interest in their works, which continues to this day. In the following 83

year, we showcased When Process Becomes Form: Dansaekhwa and Korean Abstraction— the first comprehensive exhibition in Belgium dedicated to Dansaekhwa, held in February 2016. Most recently in 2022, the Kukje Art and Culture Foundation presented a solo exhibition

by Ha Chong-Hyun as a Collateral Event of the Biennale Arte 2022.

By standing at the forefront of internationally promoting Dansaekhwa, Kukje Galler y not only heightened international engagement with Korean contemporary art, but enhanced exchange with renowned institutions around the world, inspiring discourse and creating demand for important Korean artists.

Kukje Gallery represents a diverse array of artists from various backgrounds and artistic disciplines.

Can you shed light on the curation and selection process for artists showcased at Kukje Gallery? What specific attributes or qualities do you seek in artists when deciding to collaborate with them?

As of now, the gallery has approximately 50 diverse artists in its roster. I have known those and the estate of those such as Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Candida Höfer, and Roni Horn for a long time, which led to them holding their first exhibitions with Kukje Gallery in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007 accordingly. Others, who joined the gallery more recently, such as

Robert Mapplethorpe, Suki Seokyeong Kang, Daniel Boyd, Korakrit Arunanondchai, and Heejoon Lee have been selected after thorough discussions between gallery members and the artists. The relationship between a gallery and an artist is found upon trust. As representing an artist is similar with building a relationship with that person, it is important to understand whether that artist’s vision, personality, and ot her cha racters a re in ha r mony w it h t he gallery’s vision.

Could you share with us some of the most memorable exhibitions or projects held at Kukje Gallery Seoul and elaborate on their significance?

It would be Alexander Calder and Lee Ufan’s solo exhibitions held at the Seoul space in April 2023. The fact that both are two of the most respected contemporary masters of this generation, as well as two artists who I have worked with for a long time, makes the two exhibitions ver y memorable. The immense response from the public ( bookings for the ex h ibit ion were sold- out) brou ght me joy because it reminded me of my mission—to introduce world-class international art to the local audience. Since the two solo exhibitions were held on the same dates, this created a “dialogue” between the Western and Eastern m a s t er w ho e a ch demon s t r a t e d h i s ow n method of ‘meditation.’

Manika Nagare, an established Japanese abstract painter, is quickly winning the attention of the audiences all around the world for her unique approach to colour. Working with large-scale canvas and oil paint, Nagare consistently conveys profound ideas and emotions, as well as universal human experiences.

This March, the artist’s solo exhibition “Spectrum of Vivid Moments” opened at Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery in New York. The exhibition has become a part of the official program of Asia Week New York 2023 that celebrates art from all around Asia. In our conversation with Manika Nagare, we asked her about her latest series of paintings, her inspiration, as well as her life philosophy.

Nagare’s Artistic Formation Throughout her journey as an artist Manika Nagare has been gradually developing her work with colour for which she acquired her international fame. However, as Nagare herself notes, at the early stages of her work, she never considered herself an ar tist whose main focus is colour. Only after hearing a lot of praise for her colour work, Nagare began to consider it as one of her key instruments.

Today, the ar tist ’s fascination with colour is diff icult to underestimate. Nagare uses a technique of laying colours that she developed independently over the course of her career. In her process, she layers oil paint directly on the canvas in thin layers to better integrate them and enhance depth.

As she explains herself: “I use multiple layers of the very thin oil paint colours. It is a very deep ambiguity of colours that appear on the canvas.”

“In Between”: Finding Inspiration in Loss

T h e a r t i s t s ay s t h a t , e v e n b e f o r e t h e pandemic, she began working on a new series of work s ca lled “In Bet ween”. “It comes from my persona l ex per ience of when I lost my father. At the time, I felt all the colours and lights in nature because I was facing the death of a loved one. And then, I was alive. I became inevitably aware of this fact, and how important it was that I was still here,” – she says.

As the Covid-19 pandemic started to spread around the world, resulting in many sudden deaths, the theme of the series became increa sin gly releva nt to huma nit y a s a whole. “I was working on those series, but everyone in the world was facing death,” – Nagare notes.

Through her major paintings of colour, the artist attempts to convey the transient state of being, a moment between life and death, and capture the fleeting experience of being alive while anticipating the inevitable end to one’s existence.

“In the series “In Between”, I explore the lifeto-death spectrum, the spiritual transition, or boundary, between life and death that is metaphorically compared to water/river in Japanese culture,” – the artist summarises.

In Japanese Buddhist tradition, the image of the mythological Sanzu River symbolizes t he jour ney bet ween li fe a nd deat h.

According to the myth, the deceased have to cross the river to make it to the afterlife where t hey w i l l event u a l ly meet t hei r

relatives and friends after they pass.

“In Japan, there is a story about what happens when a person passes away.. And I would love to draw something in between this life and afterlife in a brilliant way. This relates to my central theme of the “In Between” show, and I will also be presenting these paintings in the new exhibition,” – Nagare says.

Commenting on the technique she employed to create work s in the series, the ar tist explains further: “I work only in natural light, which allows me to delineate subtle colours that are otherwise diff icult to discern. I believe this strong union of this natural light and colour extends to life, which unfolds in an infinite spectrum of light.”

As Nagare’s new solo exhibition opens in New York, the artist reflects on her own experience of being a female painter in her home country, Japa n . A s pa r t of t he “Spec t r u m of V iv id Moments” show, the artist also features her new series called “Track of Colours” in which she draws inspiration from histories of little-known female artists in Japan from the 19th and the 20th centuries, presenting a sharp piece of criticism of the Japanese art scene. “ E a c h p a i n t i n g i s i n s pi r e d b y a mo d e r n painting created by an unknown female artist, a kind of a hidden artist in male-dominated society in Japan,” – she says, adding: “I would love to share those women’s histories in Japan

with the people in New York and the world.”

For Nagare, the new exhibition in New York, in a way, symbolises a new beginning. “This is so special for me. Last time, it happened in the middle of the pandemic, and this feels like I am back.”

The artist recalls that she lived in the city for six years, between 2002 and 2008, and this time made New York particularly special for her. To Nagare, it is important to demonstrate how her art is different from various forms of Japanese art through her application of colour on canvas.

“New York is known for its cultural diversity.

To me, this means that people living in the city

are able to see my paintings from a different perspective. Every time I talked to the people or the gallery, I found new ideas for my next works,” – Nagare says. “This time, I am showing some new ideas associated with Japanese female artist history. And I am so interested to share this history with the people around the world.”

She concludes by saying that she is “expecting and looking forward to having comments and feedback from the people in New York”. “Those will be very impor tant for me to make new works, and I am coming to the city to connect with those comments and find new ideas for my future art,” – Nagare explains the meaning of her visit to New York.

Can you tell us about the rich history of Domaine de Comte Lafon and how it has evolved over the generations?

The domaine ha s a fa scinat ing histor y that dates back severa l generations. It was founded mostly as it is today by my great-greatgrandfather, Jules, who purchased the land. However, it was after World War II that my grandfather really made a mark by producing wines that pleased people. My uncle Dominique took over in 1983.

My grandfather didn't work in the vineyard directly, but my uncle managed it himself. He made significant changes to the winemaking process, which has contributed to the high-quality wines we produce today.

Your commitment to organic and biodynamic practices is commendable. Could you tell us more about these approaches and how they contribute to your winemaking process?

We have been practicing organic methods since 1995, and it was officially recognized in 1998-1999. This means we avoid using any chemicals in our vineyard, relying only on sulfur and copper. We also employ mechanical techniques instead of weed care, insecticides, or other chemicals. Additionally, we have embraced biodynamic pr a c t ice s si nce a rou nd 19 9 9, a lt hou gh we don' t h ave of f ici a l accreditation. These sustainable practices align with our philosophy of preserving the environment and result in wines that truly reflect the terroir of our vineyards.

Could you walk us through the winemaking process at Domaine des Comtes Lafon, from the crucial decision of harvest to the final bottling?

It all star ts with carefully assessing the vineyard and selecting the optimal date for harvest. For our white wines, we use wholecluster pressing to minimize disruption to the grapes. We separate a portion of the press juice for oxidation while protecting the rest from oxidation. After cold settling and removal of sediments, we initiate alcoholic fermentation. The juice is then transferred to barrels for further development. We also have a meticulous sorting process in the cellar to ensure that only clean and undamaged grapes are used. The wines are then aged in tanks for approximately 14 days, with gentle extractions and decision-making about color and material. Finally, the wines are poured into tanks and barrels before the bottling stage.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is known for its exceptional white and red wines. Can you share more about your vineyards and any unique aspects they possess?

Our vineyards are indeed diverse, with two-thirds dedicated to white grapes and one-third to red grapes. One vineyard we take great pride in is Clos de la Barre, which is a monopoly vineyard located in front of our house. It covers around two hectares and is the only vineyard in Mersault that we own and produce wine from. This uniqueness adds to the character and exclusivity of our wines.

You recently joined the domaine and became co-CEO. How has this transition been for you?

Joining the domaine in 2020 was an exciting opportunity for me.

Before that, I had spent seven years in the wine industry in the United States. The transition has been a blend of preserving the family tradition while bringing a fresh perspective to the table. As co-CEO, my cousin Léa Lafon and I now manage both domaines, covering a total of 17 hectares plus 27 cources. Looking ahead, we are currently bottling the 2021 vintage and aging the 2022 vintage, with plans to explore expansion projects and aim to increase our Saint Vivant plantings within the domaine.

The collaboration of wine, food, and art is evident in your approach. How do you see these elements coming together to enhance the enjoyment of life?

In this business, it is crucial to appreciate both food and wine.

Understanding the technical aspects of wine, such as aromas and projection, is essential. We consider winemaking to be an art form and strive to promote it through collaborations with paintings and music. These creative expressions enrich the overall experience of life. When embarking on a winemaking journey, it's important to have a clear vision and the abilit y to visualize its grow th.

This mindset allows for continuous improvement and a deeper connection with those who enjoy our wines.

Apart from winemaking, are there any other unique aspects to the domaine that you would like to highlight?

Beyond our focus on wine, we have incorporated other elements into the domaine. We have cherry and apricot trees, unfortunately affected by frost this year. Additionally, my Uncle Dominique is involved in beekeeping, which adds further diversity to our activities and connection to nature.

1872. No need for trendy labels; these methods were part of their heritage long before they were named.

"We only provide the vine with the necessary suppor t , never forcing it ," he emphasizes.

She oversees the export and international brand management of esteemed sake brands, including "N by Hidetoshi Nakata,” a limited edition, private brand, as well as "Juyondai," a renowned sake crafted by Takagi Brewery, in Yamagata Prefecture.

Originally from New Zealand, Wilson-Lye relocated to Japan in 2005 and quickly fell in love with the ‘culture’ of sake. Reflecting on her early days, she shares, “My first home in Japan was the Izu Peninsula of Shizuoka, near the base of Mt. Fuji. During my welcoming party, I had the opportunity to taste a local sake that amazed me with its exquisite aromas and flavors of melon, banana, green apple, and white peach. It was a transformative experience for me as my previous encounters with sake hadn't been as pleasant. This encounter sparked a deep fascination with sake and a desire to replicate that initial experience."

Despite her limited Japanese language skills, she became resourceful in her pursuit, stating, "In my first week in Japan, I memorized the kanji (traditional Japanese characters) for all 47 prefectures so I could find and order Shizuoka sake at local izakayas." Her dedication and resourcefulness enabled her to uncover hidden gems in the vast world of sake.

Shattering Boundaries and Cultivating Inclusivity in the Sake Industry Wilson-Lye soon realized that the sake industry was more traditional and less consumer-oriented compared to the wine industry. However, she was determined to break through these barriers and make sake more accessible to a global audience.

Recalling her experiences, Wilson-Lye shares, “Despite the language barrier, some brewers took me under their wing and taught me about their craft. I think that my curiosity and enthusiasm allowed me to unknowingly break some boundaries and stereotypes."

Motivated by her passion for sake and her desire to share the cultural connection between regional food and sake, Wilson-Lye embarked on a mission to promote accessibility and inclusivity within the industry. She explains, “Sake had become such an important part of my life in Japan, I decided to pursue certification and take my involvement in the sake industry more seriously. I wanted to break the perception that sake knowledge was limited to a small group of ‘experts' and create a more accessible and aspirational experience for everyone.” Amongst her many achievements, Wilson-Lye has curated a limited edition sake for pop-artist Takashi Murakami, become a sake division judge for the prestigious International Wine Challenge competition, and her story has been featured in the film documentary, “Kampai! Sake Sisters”.

In her current role at Japan Craft Sake Company, which was founded

by Hidetoshi Nakata, in 2015, she plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between Japanese sake producers and the global market. Emphasizing the company's mission, she shares, “At JCSC, we work to create solutionbased systems for the nation's producers to ensure the long-term growth of traditional industries such as sake. Despite being a small company, thanks to Nakata-san’s leadership and vision, we’ve have been able to tackle some of the really big issues in the sake market and create quantifiable progress.” Craft Sake Week is a good case in point. Produced by the company since 2016, it is widely recognized as the world’s largest sake culture event, and has become a valuable platform from which the nation’s breweries can expand knowledge of their brands to around 100,000 annual attendees and global media.

Dispelling Misconceptions and Charting a Promising Path for Sake

"One of the misconceptions is that sake is strong, but it actually has a similar alcohol by volume (ABV) to a strong wine, and the trend toward a lower ABV of around 12 or 13% is becoming more widespread," Wilson-Lye explains, correcting the common belief about that sake has a high alcohol content similar to spirits. She further adds, "Another misconception is that sake tastes the same, but it actually has a broad spectrum of aroma and flavor profiles."

She acknowledges that a large majority of sake produced in Japan is not exported, limiting the exposure to the range of flavors found in the global market. She also emphasizes the importance of handling and storing sake properly to maintain its quality.

Looking towards the future of the sake industry, Wilson-Lye expresses, "I believe we are bearing witness to a new golden age of sake—there’s never been a better time to drink it.” With the growing popularity of Japanese cuisine and culture worldwide, sake has been riding a wave of interest, leading to increased exports. However, challenges remain before sake becomes a mainstream choice globally. "Sake is a fermented beverage that is sensitive to heat and UV light, so it needs to be handled with care in order to maintain its quality, and ensure it is enjoyed by end-consumers in the condition that the brewery intended, “ she emphasizes. To ensure optimal temperature conditions and quality assurance are maintained during shipping and distribution overseas, Japan Craft Sake Company has developed a minus five-degree export system. This system is supported by Sake Blockchain technology, which plays a vital role in ensuring traceability, security and quality control from brewery to the end-consumer.

“At the moment, our export system is being used by official distribution partners in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, but we plan to make the Sake Blockchain system available to all of the nation’s sake producers and their distribution channels in the future.”

Wilson-Lye highlights the challenges faced by sake breweries in the modern marketplace, with many closing down or facing bankruptcy.

However, she also shares inspiring stories of progress and innovation within the sake world.

“Over the past decade, there has been renewed interest in sake both in Japan and overseas, and this has largely been driven by a new generation of brewers who are drawing on the wisdom of over a 1000 years of brewing tradition and combining it with modern innovation to create high-quality, f lavourful sake that is unique to their brewery and their local region. More impor tantly, they are making sake for this

Calvert's passion for cooking started at a young age when he began experimenting with simple recipes to help his hardworking mother. By 13, he had set his sights on a culinary career, and at 16, he moved to London to pursue his dream as a chef.

Through years of working in diverse cultures a n d c u i s i n e s , h e h a s de ve l op e d a br o a d minded approach to cooking. He embraces new ingredients and cultural influences, recognising that every experience, taste, sip, and sensation is a source of inspiration that shapes his culinary st yle. “A ny t hin g you do, a ny t hin g you eat ,

anything you drink, everything that you absorb inspires the way you cook. I think it makes you a much more open-minded person rather than just cooking French cuisine,” he wisely states.

As the head chef at SÉZANNE in Tokyo, Calvert's lifelong dream of cooking in Japan has become a reality. With exceptional quality ingredients and techniques, Japan is the best place in the world to cook, according to Calvert. He has embraced Japanese cult ure and culinar y techniques, infusing them with his own creativity to create a truly unique dining experience. Guests can

As he said, “I think the most important factor when we make a dish is that it's delicious, and number two is that it's original,” he explains, “the awards are not the most important thing. I think the most important thing is trying to be a better person and a better chef, teaching others to be as good as they can be, and being able to cook dinner for your mum, if she wants to have something to eat. I think that's more important than cooking in a restaurant.”

left a lasting impression. As the scheduled opening date approached, Japan's borders remained closed, posing a significant challenge. The team encountered a dilemma: they had no pastr y chef and were missing a dessert for their menu.

With just two weeks remaining, the chef found himself on a train ride to work, contemplating the predicament. Suddenly, inspiration struck—a mango dessert idea sparked in his mind.

Upon reaching the restaurant, the entire team rallied together to bring the concept to life. They dedicated the day to crafting this innovative

dessert, pouring their creativity and expertise into its creation. By the end of the day, they had concocted an exceptional mango dessert that surpassed all expectations. It swiftly became one of the restaurant's most sought-after dishes, captivating the taste buds of their patrons.

Even today, the mango dessert remains a beloved favourite among customers. “Sometimes when you're under so much pressure and you have no option but to really come up with something, t hat 's when you squeeze out somet h i n g remarkable.”

Olive Oil. Distilled from the plump fruits of ancient olive trees that have stood for over a millennium, this oil celebrates the rich flavors bestowed by the organically nurtured Royal Casorla cultivar, native to Jaén in Andalusia, Spain. Harvested under the full moon, when their zest a nd nut r it iona l essence a re at t hei r peak, the olives undergo cold-pressing using time-honored techniques and are bottled without filtration. The resulting L’OSIER Overde Extra Virgin Olive Oil is distinguished by its radiant, verdantgold hue.

平昌大関嶺音楽祭 2023 As the curtain falls on the Music in PyeongChang 2023 in August, it's evident that this 20th-anniversary celebration was more than just a musical gathering; it was a symphony of culture, nature, and unity.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Gangwon State, the festival, under the visionary guidance of Sung-Won Yang, not only showcased musical prowess but also the power of art to bridge nations.

In an era dominated by concerns about global warming, I felt it was crucial for our concerts to have a direct connection with nature. Our concerts include pieces inspired by nature to create awareness. I strive for our audience to feel the beauty of nature and the urgency to protect it. Sustainability and nature preservation are crucial themes. While not explicitly conveyed, these messages resonate through the music. Our interpretations reveal the past's philosophies and ways of living, guiding us towards a better future.

"Being invited there as an oboist was a fortunate turn of events.

Festival orchestras can sometimes lack cohesion, but the quality there was surprisingly high. I was truly impressed by the level of musicianship during my time at the Pyeongchang festival. This festival is quite different from the usual festival orchestra setup, where soloists come together as individual talents. Here, we have many orchestra players collaborating, creating a unique and consistent level of excellence. It's truly an exceptional event."

"That wasn't my first time at the Pyeongchang festival, but each return brought fresh excitement. The diversity of musicians and the shared dedication to music made that event exceptional. Witnessing the remarkable skills of the younger generation brought me joy. As someone who started in the industry when overseas orchestra roles were rare for Japanese musicians, seeing the growth of our field was gratifying. That festival allowed us to perform with talented individuals from around the world, showcasing the global unity achievable through music."

"The Pyeongchang experience was an entirely different adventure.

Collaborating with musicians I didn't know well brought unexpected but wonderful surprises to our performances. That evening's concert held a special charm in its shared musicality, with two conductors spanning different generations and two soloists hailing from Korea and Japan. It was a rare opportunity to witness the endless possibilities that music can offer. What was even more exceptional was the diversity of musicians there, representing approximately 20 different orchestras.

That event underscored how music transcends boundaries and brings us together in harmony."

"I found the atmosphere here quite refreshing. This year's focus on nature harmonized well with the serene surroundings. The concert hall embraced by the mountains created a distinctive ambiance. Collaborating with diverse musicians rejuvenated the experience, leading to fresh outcomes even with repeated pieces. That festival's ever-changing lineup and the essence of shared music in chamber performances added to its allure. It was a place to enjoy music as well as forge connections among fellow musicians."
