HIGHLIGHTS ART BASEL IN BASEL 2023
The 2023 edition of Art Basel's flagship fair in Basel has concluded with a resounding success, leaving an indelible mark on the global art landscape. With 284 galleries from 36 countries and territories participating, including 21 debutants, the event showcased a diverse and vibrant array of artistic talent. Two standout highlights of this edition were the Unlimited and Parcours sectors. Unlimited, curated by Giovanni Carmine, offered an unprecedented glimpse into the world of large-scale installations and performances. The sector featured 76 remarkable presentations that pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. Meanwhile, the Parcours sector invited attendees to explore art beyond the traditional fairgrounds, with artworks strategically placed throughout the city. This immersive experience allowed visitors to engage with art in unexpected urban contexts, creating a dynamic and thought-provoking dialogue between art and its surroundings. バーゼルで開催されたアートフェアのフラッグシップイベント、「アート・ バーゼル 2023」が大盛況のうちに幕を閉じ、世界のアートシーンに忘れが たい足跡を残しました。36 の国と地域から 284 のギャラリーが参加し、う ち 21 のギャラリーが初出展しました。 今回のハイライトは、「アンリミテッド」部門と「パルクール」部門です。 ジョヴァンニ・カルミネ氏のキュレーションによる「アンリミテッド」では、 かつてないほどの大規模なインスタレーションやパフォーマンスの世界を垣 間見ることができました。このセクターでは、芸術表現の限界を押し広げる 76 の注目すべきプレゼンテーションが行われました。 一方、パルクール部門は、伝統的な展覧会の枠を超え、街全体に戦略的に配 置されたアート作品を通じて没入型の体験を提供しました。この体験によ り、アートとその周辺環境との間にダイナミックで示唆に富んだ対話を生み 出し、来場者は街中で思いがけずアートに触れることができました。

It has been central to the development not only of art, but also of creative industries such as film, fashion, music, and design. The city is home to one of the world’s leading and most exciting gallery scenes; it is a global metropolis that stands out thanks to the creativity and open-mindedness of its people. This fosters exceptional ideas and exchanges across cultural disciplines.

In this engaging interview, we connect with Clément Delépine, the director of the Paris+ par Art Basel fair, to delve into the exciting prospects awaiting the second year of Paris+ par Art Basel in 2023.
What opportunities and challenges does the upcoming second edition of Paris+ par Art Basel in October have in comparison to last year's event? Our public program, which is free and accessible to all, has been expanded and emboldened. We will present art and discourse in six locations across the capital, increasing Paris+ par Art Basel's footprint, while also renewing existing collaborations and establishing new ones with institutional partners, including the Musée du Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, the Beaux-Arts de Paris, and the City of Paris itself. Six prestigious international galleries will also participate in the fair for the first time. Furthermore, we are delighted to see that most travel restrictions have eased and look forward to welcoming a broader audience of art enthusiasts and collectors from around the world to the upcoming edition this October. While the French government had lifted all COVID-19-related restrictions prior to the launch of Paris+ par Art Basel in 2022, travel restrictions were still in place in some other countries or regions. Our main challenge is linked to a significant change coming in 2024: We will be transitioning from the Grand Palais Éphémère to the spectacular Grand Palais, which is currently undergoing renovations. Although it may
seem distant, we are already working on the logistics of this exciting move. For the 2023 edition, could you please provide further information about the selection process for each of the five public program locations with art exhibitions? Projects are selected based on the quality of the proposal, its technical feasibility, and its alignment with the venue where it will be exhibited. • Annabelle Ténèze, curator of the exhibition in the Jardin des Tuileries, reviewed the applications for that project in consultation with Paris+ par Art Basel and the Musée du Louvre. • The Beaux-Arts project was chosen by the leadership of both Paris+ par Art Basel and Beaux-Arts. • The Place Vendôme and Parvis de l’Institut de France projects were selected by the leadership of Paris+ par Art Basel, in agreement with the City of Paris. • The Palais d’Iéna project emerged through a project-based process involving the leadership of Paris+ par Art Basel, the Palais d’Iéna, and Matthieu Poirier, the curator of the exhibition. While the fair's leadership, curators, and collaborating institutions are responsible for selecting the projects, these are always presented by one or several galleries. It's also important to note that all galleries – whether participating in Paris+ par Art Basel or not – can apply to present their work as part of the public program. This feature is unique to our Parisian show; in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong, galleries must participate in the main show to be eligible to apply to one of the projectbased sectors.

Atsuko Ninagawa Discusses: The Vision and Role of ART WEEK TOKYO
Art Week Tokyo, set to commence in November, is an annual celebration of contemporary art in Japan that attracts both local and international artists and art lovers. Under the directorship of Atsuko Ninagawa, the event harnesses her innate ability to connect with artists and her extensive experience working on large-scale art events to elevate the Japanese art scene’s global profile. Since establishing her own gallery, Take Ninagawa, in HigashiAzabu, Tokyo, in 2008, Ninagawa has dedicated herself to presenting contemporary Japanese artists from a global perspective. As the cofounder and director of Art Week Tokyo, she has expanded her vision to promote the broader Japanese art scene. We had the opportunity to hear from Ms. Ninagawa about her passion for art and her aspirations for Art Week Tokyo.

Manika Nagare, an established Japanese abstract painter, is quickly winning the attention of the audiences all around the world for her unique approach to colour. Working with large-scale canvas and oil paint, Nagare consistently conveys profound ideas and emotions, as well as universal human experiences. This March, the artist’s solo exhibition “Spectrum of Vivid Moments” opened at Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery in New York. The exhibition has become a part of the official program of Asia Week New York 2023 that celebrates art from all around Asia. In our conversation with Manika Nagare, we asked her about her latest series of paintings, her inspiration, as well as her life philosophy.

Rebekah Wilson-Lye, a leading non-Japanese professional in the world of sake, has made significant contributions to the industry through her role as the International PR, Market, and Export Manager at Japan Craft Sake Company Co., Ltd (JCSC). She oversees the export and international brand management of esteemed sake brands, including "N by Hidetoshi Nakata,” a limited edition, private brand, as well as "Juyondai," a renowned sake crafted by Takagi Brewery, in Yamagata Prefecture. A Serendipitous Journey into the World of Sake
日本酒の世界への偶然の旅
Originally from New Zealand, Wilson-Lye relocated to Japan in 2005 and quickly fell in love with the ‘culture’ of sake. Reflecting on her early days, she shares, “My first home in Japan was the Izu Peninsula of Shizuoka, near the base of Mt. Fuji. During my welcoming party, I had the opportunity to taste a local sake that amazed me with its exquisite aromas and flavors of melon, banana, green apple, and white peach. It was a transformative experience for me as my previous encounters with sake hadn't been as pleasant. This encounter sparked a deep fascination with sake and a desire to replicate that initial experience."
ニュージーランド出身のウイルソンライ氏は 2005 年に日本に移住 し、日本酒の「文化」に心を奪われました。初期の日々について、「最 初の日本での家は静岡県の伊豆半島で、富士山の麓近くでした。歓迎 会で地元の日本酒を味わう機会があり、メロン、バナナ、青りんご、 白桃の絶妙な香りと味に驚かされました。これは私にとって変容の経 験でした。それまで日本酒はあまり好きではありませんでしたが、こ の出会いが私に日本酒への深い魅力を抱かせ、初めての体験を再現し たいという欲求を引き起こしました」と語っています。
Despite her limited Japanese language skills, she became resourceful in her pursuit, stating, "In my first week in Japan, I memorized the kanji (traditional Japanese characters) for all 47 prefectures so I could find and order Shizuoka sake at local izakayas." Her dedication and resourcefulness enabled her to uncover hidden gems in the vast world of sake.
Shattering Boundaries and Cultivating Inclusivity in the Sake Industry Wilson-Lye soon realized that the sake industry was more traditional and less consumer-oriented compared to the wine industry. However, she was determined to break through these barriers and make sake more accessible to a global audience. Recalling her experiences, Wilson-Lye shares, “Despite the language barrier, some brewers took me under their wing and taught me about their craft. I think that my curiosity and enthusiasm allowed me to unknowingly break some boundaries and stereotypes."

Motivated by her passion for sake and her desire to share the cultural connection between regional food and sake, Wilson-Lye embarked on a mission to promote accessibility and inclusivity within the industry. She explains, “Sake had become such an important part of my life in Japan, I decided to pursue certification and take my involvement in the sake industry more seriously. I wanted to break the perception that sake knowledge was limited to a small group of ‘experts' and create a more accessible and aspirational experience for everyone.” Amongst her many achievements, Wilson-Lye has curated a limited edition sake for pop-artist Takashi Murakami, become a sake division judge for the prestigious International Wine Challenge competition, and her story has been featured in the film documentary, “Kampai! Sake Sisters”.

In her current role at Japan Craft Sake Company, which was founded by Hidetoshi Nakata, in 2015, she plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between Japanese sake producers and the global market. Emphasizing the company's mission, she shares, “At JCSC, we work to create solutionbased systems for the nation's producers to ensure the long-term growth of traditional industries such as sake. Despite being a small company, thanks to Nakata-san’s leadership and vision, we’ve have been able to tackle some of the really big issues in the sake market and create quantifiable progress.” Craft Sake Week is a good case in point. Produced by the company since 2016, it is widely recognized as the world’s largest sake culture event, and has become a valuable platform from which the nation’s breweries can expand knowledge of their brands to around 100,000 annual attendees and global media.

As a sous chef at three-Michelin-starred establishments, he developed an open-minded approach to cooking that incorporates diverse cultural influences and ingredients into his dishes. With his singular vision, Calvert's restaurant, SÉZANNE, earned a Michelin star in less than six months. Currently, approximately two years since its inauguration, the restaurant holds a Michelin two-star rating.
