In this issue, we feature two winemakers from France and one sake brewer from Japan, who share their passion for their

respective traditions and winemaking. The family-run Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg in Vosne-Romanée, France, has been passed down from its founder to his great-grandchildren since its establishment in 1933. The experience and sensibility

accumulated through generations are now embodied in their exquisite wines. Similarly, Domaine Michel Gros, which has been family-owned since the 1830s, started from a small vineyard but has become one of the most respected winemakers in the region due to their sincere approach to winemaking.

Japanese sake brewer continues to preserve their traditions while exploring new possibilities. Iwao Niizawa runs the traditional

Niizawa Sake Brewery in Miyagi Prefecture, overcame the challenge of rebuilding his brewery from scratch after it was completely destroyed in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. He now strives to create the ultimate sake to accompany food.

今号では、日本とフランスの 2 カ国の醸造家がそれぞれの伝統と酒造りへの情熱を伝えます。フランス・ヴォーヌ・ロマネの家族経営のド メーヌ・ジョルジュ・ミュニュレ = ジブールは、1933 年の創業から子孫へと受け継がれ、現在は創業者の曾孫らが経営を担っています。

世代を経て積み重ねられてきた経験と感性が今、珠玉の一本に込められています。ドメーヌ・ミッシェル・グロもまた、1830 年代から代々、 家族で継がれてきました。小さな畑からスタートし、その真摯なワイン造りにより今では地域で最も尊敬される作り手の一人に数えられる ようになりました。

日本の醸造家も伝統を継ぎ、 さらには新たな境地への開拓に挑んでいます。宮城県で伝統ある新澤酒造を営む新澤巖夫さんは、2011年、 東日本大震災で酒蔵が全壊する試練も。一から作り直し、 「究極の食中酒」を突き詰めています。

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is a family-owned winery located in the charming village of Vosne-Romanée, France. Already run by the fourth generation of the Mugneret-Gibourg family, the winery is renowned for captivating the hearts and taste buds of wine aficionados around the globe.

With a history that dates back to 1933, the winery has been passed down from the founders, Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret, to their children and grandchildren.

Now, it is run by their great-grandchildren, Lucie Teillaud Mugneret and her cousin Marion, as each generation continues to add their unique touch to the family legacy.

Artistry in its pure form

A HISTORY as rich as its WINES Georges Mugneret-Gibourg’s beginnings were humble, with only three acres of vineyards and a small plot of land in the village of Bogan. However, through hard work and dedication of its founders, the winery f lourished, and today it stands as a symbol of passion and excellence in winemaking. Founded in 1933 by the great-grandparents of t he cu r rent ow ners , t he dom a i n h a s a r ich a nd fascinating past that has shaped its present and future.

When Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret first decided to establish their own vineyard in 1933, the land in VosneRomanée was not comparable in costs to today’s context.

Back then, the couple was able to afford purchasing a house which they then rebuilt to serve as a guest house, together w ith three acres of v ineyards. With those vineyards, they founded the domaine that we know today.

Jeanne and André had one son, George, who studied to become an ophthalmologist but developed a passion for winemaking from a young age. In his efforts to combine 7

his two passions, he worked as a doctor for four days a week and as a winemaker for the remaining three days, managing all the wines in the cellar over the weekend.

However, his winemaking career was cut short in 1988 when he passed away at a young age of 59.

A f ter George’s deat h, it wa s his dau ghters, Ma r ieCh r i s t i n e a n d M a r i e -A n d r é e , w ho t o ok ove r t h e mana gement of the domaine. They worked hard to maintain the legacy of their father and his parents, taking care of the vineyards and the wine production since then.

Recently, the fourth generation of the family, represented

by Lucie and Marion, have stepped in to fulfil their duties at the Georges Mugneret-Gibourg winery, in 2017 and 2018 respectively, working alongside their mothers.

Today, Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée spend most of their time working on vine cultivation, while Lucie and Marion are responsible for the winemaking and processes in the cellar.

For years now, the winery has used the label featuring Saint Vincent, the saint who is often believed to be the patron of French winemakers. ジョルジュ・ミュニュレ = ジブールのワインについて特筆すべきは品質です が、印象的なラベルもまた特別です。芸術を育むというドメーヌの姿勢を示す ため、創設当初より、有名画家に作画を依頼するのではなく地元ニュイ・サン ・ジョルジュの印刷場の従業員が描いたオリジナル絵画を使用しています。

What makes Georges Mugneret-Gibourg’s wines truly special is not just their quality but also their eye-catching labels. Rather than commissioning an artwork from a famous painter, the founders decided that the winery’s label should feature an original painting created by an employee of the print factory in Nuits Saint Georges they collaborated with to showcase the winery’s commitment to fostering artistic expressions.

A Timeless Legacy Georges Mugneret-Gibourg’s wines are a testament to the family’s dedication to excellence and artistry. From the modest beginnings of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret to Lucie and Marion’s stewardship, the winery's unique and rich history continues to inspire wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Today, the winery manages over eight hectares of vineyards ranging between nine different appellations. With Pinot Noir being the main focus, the winery produces between 20,000 and 30,000 bottles every year, always striving for the perfect flavour achieved through practices of blending and ageing.

For instance, the 2021 vintage is described by the winemakers as being quite impressive in terms of taste, and very different from the three previous vintages released in three consecutive warm years, between 2018 and 2020. While it is not a warm wine with a lot of alcohol and a strong flavour, it nevertheless is striking in its 11

elegance and quiet yet mysterious restraint.

Compared to the typically heavier Burgundian vintages, the 2021 wines by Georges Mugneret-Gibourg are characteristic with their bright fruity notes. Unfortunately, the frosts in April 2021 affected some plots of the vineyard, resulting in a loss of up to 60% of the crop in some plots of land, which means there are fewer samples of the wine currently available. Nevertheless, despite the setback, the 2021 vintage is undeniably worth savouring.

In conclusion, Lucie mentions that there are currently no plans to develop the domain further, as the family is focused on creating wines to the highest standards using the resources that are already available. However, she mentions, one major ongoing project not linked to wine is the redevelopment of the five-room guest house, which is planned to be named after their grandmother, the wife of the late George – “La Maison de Jacqueline”.

レガントで静謐感があり、抑制の効いた味わいが特徴です。 一般的なヴィンテージのしっかりとしたブルゴーニュと比 べ、ジョルジュ・ミュニュレ = ジブールの 2021 年のワ インは、明るくフルーティーです。残念ながら、畑の多く の区画が 2021 年 4 月の霜の被害を受けたため、予定の 60％近くの収穫が損なわれ、流通する本数は少なくなって います。しかし、天災に見舞われたものの、2021 年のジ ョルジュ・ミュニュレ = ジブールは、間違いなく味わうに 値するヴィンテージです。 今のところドメーヌの規模を拡大するつもりはないと、当 主のリュシーは述べます。一家が行うべきは、すでにある リソースを使って最高水準のワインを造り続けることだと いうのです。ワイン造り以外では大きなプロジェクトが進 行中です。5 部屋のゲストハウスを改築し、祖父ジョルジ ュの妻で祖母のジャクリーヌにちなんで「La Maison de Jacqueline」と名付ける予定だといいます。

ジョルジュ・ミュニュレ = ジブールの高品質のワインは、 一族が妥協をいとわず育成と醸造に取り組んできた証で す。ジャンヌ・ジブールとアンドレ・ミュニュレによるさ さやかな始まりから、リュシーとマリオンが運営する現在 に至るまで、このドメーヌは世界の人々を魅了する豊穣な 歴史を刻み続けています。

New Generation of Winemakers Pierre Gros, the owner of the winery in the seventh generation, took over from his father only a few years ago. However, with his deep knowledge of his family’s winemaking traditions and outstanding familiarity with the vineyards, he carries on the family legacy with his commitment to preserving traditional practices while adapting to the challenges of modern times.

Even though he studied to be an engineer and worked in this field for six years in Paris, Pierre continued developing his love and appreciation for wine.

“I was organizing some tasting sessions to present our wines, and this is when I started to get invested into the process. I developed a strong interest in winemaking and our family traditions,” – he says.

Pierre himself and his two younger brothers had an intense discussion about who was to come back to Burgundy to help their parents to run the family business, because none of the young men was prepared to do so: “And I said to myself: ‘We have a very interesting domaine, and we have a great family story. It is a shame if no one is coming back’.”

Today, he explains, a lot of his decisions in the winery are in line with the family traditions he learned about over the years. “My father was close to the retirement age, and he wanted to let go a little bit. He was happy that I was able to come and help him, so he is letting me do what I want with the domaine,” – Pierre says. He adds that he does not introduce major changes to the processes but has to adjust the winemaking principles to adjust to the new challenges.

ニュに戻って家業を手伝うか、激しく議論したと いいます。弟たちにその意思がないと分かったピ エールは思いました。「自分たちには素敵なドメ ーヌがあり、素晴らしい家族の物語がある。誰も 戻らなければ、もったいない」 現在、ピエールは、長年にわたって学んだ家族の 伝統に沿ってワイナリー運営を行っています。「リ タイアを控え仕事を減らそうとしていた父は、私 が戻ってきたことを喜んでくれました。おかげで、 ドメーヌでやりたいことをやらせてもらっていま す」 ワイン造りの根幹の部分を変えることはないもの の、新たな課題に対応するために様々な調整が必 要だと彼は言います。

現代の課題への対処 気候変動の影響もあり、ピエールは剪定の方法を変えたり、除草剤を廃止 したりするなど、時代に合わせたワイン造りを取り入れてきました。 「古典的なワインを造り続けるためには、カーヴでの手法やプロセスを現 代の状況に合わせることで、適切な熟成が行われるようにしなければなり ません」と彼は言います。

ピエールによると気候変動はブドウの成熟に大きく影響し、20 年前、40 年前と比べ、現在のブドウはより早くより強く成熟するといいます。さら に、夏の降水量が年々減っているため、ブドウの立ち枯れを目の当たりに することも多くなりました。 しかし、気候の変化は、冷涼な地域でのワイン造りにおいては、大きなメ リットにもなり得るといいます。「昔は、質の高いワインに必要なレベル に成熟したブドウを作ることが非常に困難でした。今は気候の変化により、 毎年、適切な成熟度を得ることができ、しかもフレッシュさを保てるよう になりました。この地域は多くの恩恵を受けているのです。」

Challenges of Contemporary Winemaking One such challenge is climate change, which has prompted Pierre to modify some practices, such as pruning and eliminating the use of herbicides.

“We have to adapt also the methods and the process we have in the cellar to make sure our wines stay classical and are able to age properly,” – he says.

According to Pierre, climate change quickly affects the maturity of the grapes, as today grapes mature quicker and more intensely compared to the same process 20 or 40 years ago. Moreover, the fact that each year there is less rain in the summer, the winemakers face increasing difficulties with mortality of the wines.

Still, he mentions, the changing climate can also be a great advantage to winemaking in cooler regions: “Back in the day, it was very difficult to obtain the minimum maturity of the grapes to produce decent wines. Now, because of climate change, we have the right maturity every year, but we are also able to maintain freshness. So, this area has benefitted a lot.”

Artistry and Appreciation for Craftsmanship Domaine Michel Gros also embraces the artistry of winemaking by collaborating with artists to produce stunning works for their labels.

While the wines produced by Domaine Michel Gros continue to be released with a traditional label – a drawing of two lions – which was developed by Pierre’s grandfather, the winery continues to search for new designs that would be able to marry the traditional image of the domain with the changing environment.

Despite the challenges, Pierre’s philosophy of winemaking remains rooted in the art of craftsmanship and hard work. Such dedication is evident in the domain’s flagship vineyard, Clos des Réas. The seven-hectare plot, with its cool climate, produces red wines with distinct freshness and acidity. In turn, the white wine undergoes a unique vinification process, with skin contact maceration of 24 hours, giving the wine reduced acidity and a deeper colour from the skin pigments.

In addition to Clos des Réas, the Monopole vineyard is another renowned location in the domain’s territories. One of the first vineyards purchased by the family, the Monopole remains the pride of the domain.

To celebrate the winery's 160th anniversary, Domaine Michel Gros has released a special edition 2019 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas Monopole. This limited-edition wine is a tribute to the Gros family’s unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and winemaking excellence.

芸術性と職人技 ドメーヌ・ミッシェル・グロでは、ワイン造りという芸術にふさ わしいラベルを、アーティストとのコラボレーションによって生 み出しています。1998 年までのドメーヌのワインは、ピエール の祖父による 2 頭の獅子の伝統的図柄のラベルでリリースされ ていましたが、1999 年と 2020 年の 2 度、ラベルは変更され ています。ドメーヌでは、伝統的なイメージと環境の変化に調和 した新たなデザインを時代に合わせて取り入れているのです。 様々な課題を克服してきたピエールですが、そのワイン造りの根 本は、職人的な技術と実直な仕事です。そんなこだわりは、ドメ ーヌが誇る単独所有畑の「クロ・デ・レア」にも表れています。 この冷涼な気候の 2.12 ヘクタールの区画で生産されるのが、フ レッシュさと酸味が際立つドメーヌの代表的な赤ワイン「ヴォー ヌ・ロマネ ・プルミエクリュ・クロ・デ・レア」です。一方、7 ヘクタールの区画「フォンテーヌ・サン・マルタン」では、ピノ ・ノワールやシャルドネなど、赤・白両方の品種が栽培されてい ます。白ワインの醸造では、24 時間のスキンコンタクト・マセ ラシオンという工程で、酸味を抑え、果皮の色素による深い色合 いを加えています。 ドメーヌ・ミッシェル・グロは、ワイナリー創立 160 周年を記 念し、特別仕様の「ヴォーヌ・ロマネ ・プルミエクリュ・クロ ・デ・レア」2019 年ヴィンテージをリリースしました。この限 定ワインは、長い歳月を通じ、常にワイン造りに誠実に向き合っ てきた一族の歴史の結実なのです。

The Spirit and Zeal of the Brewer Born in 1975 in Miyagi Prefecture, Iwao Niizawa graduated from the Department of Brewing and Fermentation in the Faculty of Agriculture at Tokyo University of Agriculture and, at the young age of twenty-five, he became the chief brewer at Niizawa Sake Brewery, which boasts a history of 150 years. In the same year, he developed the sake “Hakurakusei,” which has been served in the Japan Airlines’ First Class international flights for twelve consecutive years.

Having been the brewer of “the ultimate food sake,” which is a perfect companion to a meal, Niizawa also serves as a business manager to preserve the Brewery and its rich history for future generations. We traced his journey with Niizawa Sake Brewery and heard about his undying passion for Japanese sake.

From a young age, Iwao Niizawa witnessed the challenging conditions of the present state of the Brewery. Since the beginning, he devoted himself to sake brewing with an awareness of problems to tackle. He studied brewing and fermentation very earnestly at university, and from his mid-twenties, he has taken the lead to rebuild his family business and overcome its years of deficit. When he brought out “Hakurakusei” just after his appointment as the chief brewer, the reaction of the market was quite chilly.

“I’ve been raising sake like my own children ever since I took over this brewery, but it was difficult to get buyers’ attention and have them treat it as a valuable product. I tried different strategies such as lowering the price and putting extra care into the storage, and meanwhile, we pursued the best in terms of quality, control, and taste—so much so that if a stockist wouldn’t take our products even then, we would have felt that they were in the wrong.

We gradually settled on the flavour that represents the ‘food sake’—sake to be enjoyed with a meal—which is the theme of our brewery.”

Niizawa spent long and grueling hours in the brewery, creating, inspecting, and improving sake day after day. In 2003, three years after the initial

launch of “Hakurakusei,” the sake became much more famous when it was picked up by a magazine.

However, their luck was short-lived. In 2011, their brewery buildings were completely destroyed in the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. They were forced to move to a different location and to remake their products from scratch. In the face of such adversity, Niizawa’s passion for sake-breweing only grew more focused and intense.

“I was a brewer, so I was terribly stubborn and particular. I wasn’t interested in making fancy, flashy sake; I wanted to make sake that drew out the flavours of a meal. So my goal was to make sake that’s subtle but has a clean edge, a beautiful sake with just a hint of aroma. Some people from overseas asked for sake that was more flamboyant, with a more conspicuous scent, which would simply draw attention to its flavours as a Japanese sake. But when we lost everything in the disaster, I knew from the bottom of my heart that I wanted to keep pursuing ‘the ultimate food sake.’ I hope to make ours a brewery that would last another hundred years.”

The President’s Self-questioning: “What do I want to do in life through sake brewing?”

Battling under the pressure of having full responsibility of everything, Niizawa has been exploring the big question: “What do I want to do in life through sake brewing?” This led him to go beyond perfecting the art of brewery and to put more effort into rearranging the structure and system of the brewery as a corporation.

For example, in traditional breweries, it is the custom for employees to keep working without any days of rest during the brewing period. However, Niizawa has introduced a new system in which workers can take two days off each week, increasing the number of staff to make this feasible. In addition, his brewery has seen the youngest female chief brewer in the nation and a co-chief brewer who is from outside Japan.

Instead of clinging too much to traditions, Niizawa seeks out methods that can produce results, and he continues to reform the Brewery. He doesn’t forget to manage himself either.

“The President’s job is to hold responsibility for everything and make the largest investment in oneself, while improving and reforming the day-to-day workplace or the actions of employees are the job of the one in charge of that particular workplace. As long as those managers are keeping a careful eye on what’s happening one level below them, then the process is sound, and I try not to get too involved in it. At the same time, whenever I see anything out of place, I deal with them immediately without putting things off, and I try not to overthink things.”

“It takes a very long time to get to a point where you can make an objective judgement on a product—to train your sense of taste enough to be able to determine its market price. Then you have to strive toward even greater products.”

「酒造りを通して人生で何がしたいのか」

At present, Niizawa has turned over the position of chief brewer and leads the company as President. Since his student days has been about brewing, so much was new to him when he became the President.

現在は杜氏の立場を譲り、社長として酒造を引っ張る新澤 さん。学生時代から醸造一筋だった新澤さんにとって、社 長業は初めてのことばかりでした。 「価格を見極める難しさとか、自分の味覚を鍛える『これ はいくらぐらいの商品だ』というところが客観的に判断で きるところまでにすごく時間を要するし、それ以上に挑戦 しなければいけない商品というのも今度は出てきます」 全てが自分の責任になるというプレッシャーと闘いなが ら、新澤さんは「酒造りを通して人生で何がしたいのか」 という大きなテーマに向き合ってきたそう。そこで酒造り を極めるだけでなく、企業としての体制を整えることにも 力を入れました。 例えば、昔ながらの酒蔵では醸造期間中は休みなく働くの

が伝統。しかし新澤さんは週休二日制を取り入れ、スタッ フの人数を増やして現場を回しています。それだけでな く、全国最年少の女性杜氏や海外出身の副杜氏も誕生させ ました。 伝統を守ることにこだわりすぎず「結果を出せる方法」に 目を向けて、酒造のアップデートを続ける新澤さん。自身 のマネジメントも怠りません。 「社長は『全責任を持つことと、最大の自己投資』をする ことが仕事で、従業員や現場の改善や改革は現場の一つ上 の上司がやる仕事だと思っています。1 つ下のことをきち んと見て、やっていれば健全であると割り切るようにして います。何か、気づいた時には持ち越さずにすぐに行動に 移すということも心がけて、なるべく考えないようにして います」

Believing in the Value of the Brewery and Sake Of course, “Hakurakusei” has gained great popularity, but Niizawa Brewery’s premium line of sake has also attracted much attention.

The “Zankyo” series, which was the first sake in Japan with a singledigit rice polishing ratio, and “Reikyo,” which has a polishing ratio of less than one per cent, have been a sensation overseas as well.

“It’s exciting to be recognized and to gain customers with products that we’ve built up from scratch, rather than following after other people’s experience and data. That’s just a priceless feeling for a technical maker. All of us—both my employees and myself—are putting the precious time of our lives into this work, so we’d like to keep doing what we feel is exciting.”

Even now, when he steers the Brewery as a President, his commitment and enthusiasm for exploring techniques as a brewer are unquenchable. He concludes, “What I want to believe in most of all are the tradition of my family’s Brewery, which has been continuing for 150 years, as well as the value of the culture and the sake that it has built over time.”

“I think sake is like art—if you can find a sake that you feel is delightful and delicious, then that’s a good thing. In Japan, there are more than 1,200 sake breweries. Some of them have a history of a hundred, or two hundred years, making sake that still retains the same taste. Others are newer, using cutting-edge technology.

Whatever the style, we all put everything we’ve got into making sake, devoting our lives to it. The possibilities in sake are infinite, even now. If you could witness this and taste it, that would make us happy and content indeed.”

ART World-renowned architect Tadao Ando continues to create architecture that breathes life into beloved cities. In addition to the beauty and novelty of his designs, he values the power of space to speak to people's hearts. His own passion and drive to keep moving forward are evident in his work.

Also, we explore the thoughts and emotions that underpin the work of sculptor Kohei Nawa, who continues to break new ground in the world of sculpture. Bonsai artisan Kunio Kobayashi believes that "bonsai embodies the dignity of life" and always stresses the importance of the sanctity of life in his domestic and international lectures. The next head of the Ikenobo School of Ikebana, Senko Ikenobo, inherited the pressure of taking over an old family estate during adolescence but continues to pass down the teachings of her predecessors that "even withered flowers can be beautiful." Painter Toshiyuki Enoki has a philosophy of "finding what is lacking in this world and supplementing it with 'hope'," and his dedication to preserving traditional culture is also deeply moving.

We also shine a spotlight on several curators who play a key role in appreciating art. Meruro Washida, who has curated various exhibitions and currently serves as the director of the Towada Art Center, has a desire to contribute to community development. Curator Yuko Hasegawa regards her profession as "connecting people with art" and strives to hone her skills in evaluating the value of art every day. TADAO ANDO Born in Osaka, Tadao Ando is a selftaught architect. He established Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in 1969. His representative works include the Row House in Sumiyoshi, for which he was awarded the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Prize in 1979, the Church of the Light, and most recently, the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, among many others. A distinguished architect with numerous accolades, he is also well known for his work as a professor. There is beauty in your architecture that captivates people.

What is “beauty” for you, and what encounters have you experienced that came to develop your sensibility?

When I’m working on site, I don’t even have a moment to think about any thing profound or ref ined—nothing is on my mind except to keep moving forward. “Beauty” is a loaded word. It’s not all about how beautiful or interesting something is to the eye. The important thing, I believe, is actually in the part that’s not visible, like whether or not the work holds “the power of the space to speak to the heart of the viewer.”

I don’t know about sensibility, but what shaped my approach to “expression” most of all was my encounter with Gutai Art Association in my twenties. They urged artists not to imitate others, to be free from preconceived ideas, and their philosophy had a significant inf luence on me. I learnt not so much about “beaut y” but about something more fundamental, “the nature of creation,” from their leadership.

What project are you working on currently? Could you share your secret to living in the “now” and always taking on new challenges?

I’m working on the “Children’s Book Forest” project that started out in Nakanoshima, Osaka, in July 2020. Another site opened in Tono, Iwate in July 2021. This July, the third one opened in Kobe, Hyogo. All three share the same concept: to make a space where children can wander around freely to discover books and enjoy them. Children are the stars there.

The other day, when I visited the “Book Forest” in Osaka, children were running around in and outside the building, full of energy and all smiles. It’s the happiest moment for me when I see that the completed buildings are loved by the people and have become a vibrant, living part of the city. That’s when I think, “I’m glad we made this.”

I began this project as a way to give back to the society that brought me up. I don’t know how far I can go, but I’d like to keep working on this as long as I’m active as an architect.

In the end, the reason I can keep challenging myself like this is because I’m running with my own feet, following my own route towards a goal that I determined myself. As long as it’s my own choice and by my own responsibility, I can overcome whatever difficulties that may arise on the way. That means deviating from the track that society has laid out, so I always have to be wide awake and never let my guard down. I think the crucial thing is to maintain this “tension,” this sense of being on edge. For that, we need strength both in the mind, the heart, and the body. 今挑戦しているプロジェクトと、挑戦し続けながら ” 今 ” を 生きる秘訣を教えてください。 2020 年 7 月大阪・中之島からスタートした「こども本の森」 プロジェクトです。2021 年の 7 月には岩手県・遠野市でも オープン、今年の 7 月には兵庫県・神戸市で三つ目がオープ ンします。一貫するコンセプトは、こどもが自由に本と出会 い、楽しめる場所にすること。こどもが主役の施設です。 先日、大阪の「本の森」を訪れると、施設内外をこどもが笑 顔で元気よく駆け回っていました。完成後の建物が、人々に 愛され、いきいきと街に息づいている情景を目にしたときが 「つくってよかった」と一番嬉しくなるときです。 このプロジェクトは自身を育ててくれた社会への、自分なり の恩返しとして始めたものでした。どこまでいけるか分かり ませんが、建築の仕事を続ける限りは続けていきたいですね。 こうして挑戦し続けられるのは結局、自分で決めた目標に向 かって、自分で道筋をたて、自分の足で奔っているからだと 思います。自分の選択、自分の責任ならば、その過程で苦労 があっても乗り越えられる。世間のレールから外れていくわ けですから、いつでもフル回転で気を抜けない。大切なのは この「緊張感の持続」なんじゃないかな。そのためには、心 と体、両方の体力が必要です。それを養うべく、私も運動と 読書を一日も欠かさず続けています。 35

As an architect, what’s the one thing you would most like to leave behind for the future?

I’m a Japanese person who grew up in Japan, so I do hope the cultures and sensibilities that derive from nature characteristic to Japan will be preserved. I think it’s meaningful to pass on the Japanese view of nature to posterity not just for the sake of the future of Japan, but for contemplating tomorrow’s world. After all, human beings are a part of nature, too.

As for how I envision the role of the architect in the future, it’s difficult to predict the future of the world or of architecture in this day and age, when things are in turmoil. What’s needed at such a time is a creator who thinks deeply about the fundamental origin of architecture, about the nature of architecture and what purpose it serves.

安藤さんが、建築家として未来に一番残したいものは何でしょうか。 私は日本に生まれ育った日本人ですから、やはり、日本固有の自然に 依る文化、感性は残っていってほしいと思いますね。日本の未来のた めだけではなく、世界の明日を考えるうえでも、日本人の自然観の継 承は意味のあることだと思いますよ。結局人間もまた、自然の一部な わけですから。 未来の建築家像ということで言うと、今は激動する時代の中で、世界 も建築も全く未来が見えない状態ですよね。だからこそ「建築とは何 か、何のためにつくるのか」という建築の原点をしっかり考えている 作り手が必要だと思っています。 ANDO MUSEUM 香川県香川郡 , 2013 Photo/ 小川重雄

Could you share a message for our readers?

It doesn’t matter what age you are—if you are still looking towards the future with a goal in mind, even in your seventies or eighties, your days will be as fresh and invigorating as youth. That’s how the American poet Samuel Ullman wrote about “Youth.” I intend to live my “youth” until I’m a hundred years old. In spirit, I’m a “green apple” that always stays green and never grows ripe. I suppose Gen de Art is a magazine that’s picked up by people who’d sympathise with such words? Dear readers, I hope you’ll live out your lives to your heart’s content, whatever life you envision for yourselves! The bright, shining light of your lives, the lives of each and every one of you, is the light of hope for the world of tomorrow!

Born in 1975, Kohei Nawa is an artist based in Kyoto. In 2003, he completed his PhD in Fine Art Sculpture at Kyoto City University of Arts, and in 2009, he founded Sandwich Inc. Conceptualising the “epidermis” of sculpture as an interface that connects with the senses, he has been developing a series of sculptures titled “PixCell” since 2002, which revolves around the idea of cells and symbolises the information-driven society in the present day.

In “Direction,” a series of paintings drawn by gravity, and in “Force,” an installation work in which black silicone oil streams down into space, his theme was the relationship between life and the universe, sensibility and technology. Through his flexible interpretations of sculpture, Nawa has created numerous artworks that offer a singular perceptual experience for viewers, as if the physical properties of materials are opening up before our eyes. We spoke to Nawa about a wide range of topics, including his creative practice, the background of his studio, and his vision for the future.

What inspired you to become an artist?

I don’t know when it started, but I always liked making things from when I was little. Ever since I can remember, I was making all kinds of things.

Drawing, crafting... I think that still continues to this day.

I really started thinking about pursuing art school when I took dessin classes in my first year of senior high school. I enrolled in Kyoto City University of A r t s a f t er t h at . Kyot o wa s a s t i mu l at i n g environment for me, where tradition and the present blended together. I was exposed not only to contemporary art, but also to traditional crafts and traditional fine art, as well as philosophies and criticism about them.

My ideas arise from a broad spectrum of things, such as the experience of living in present-day society and information from various fields. But the aesthetics and philosophies behind that have been cultivated through my activities in Kyoto.

まず、アーティストを目指したきっかけ について伺えますか。 何歳から始まったのかはわかりませんが、もの を作るのが子供の頃から好きで、物心つく前か らさまざまなことをしていました。絵を描いた り、工作をしたり、それがいまだに続いている ような感覚でいます。 実際に美大進学を意識しはじめたのは高校１年 生のころ、デッサン教室に通い始めたことがき っかけでした。その後は京都市立芸術大学へ入 学したのですが、伝統と現在が交わる京都とい う場所は、コンテンポラリーアートはもちろ ん、伝統工芸や伝統美術、そしてそれらに対す る哲学や批評といったさまざまなものに触れら れる刺激的な空間でした。 僕のアイディアは、いま生きているこの時代や さまざまな分野の情報など、幅広いものがきっ かけになっているのですが、その背景にある美 学や哲学自体は、京都で活動するなかで培われ てきたのかなと思っています。

KOHEI NAWA So that’s how your ideas are born. How do you share them with the members of your studio?

For studio projects, I form several teams that develop each piece.

In Sandwich, my studio, numerous talents come together: creators specialising in architecture, graphic design, 3D modelling, programming, as well as the production team which actually processes the materials using a variety of techniques. We hold discussions every day as we work.

I jump in there, too. As we work together, I tell them what I want to do more specifically. In other words, it’s not just about the concept—I tell them my aim by sharing the textures of the materials and the process itself. Sharing my vision through working together is what I value most of all.

そうして育まれた名和さんのアイディアは、どのように してスタジオのメンバーと共有されるのでしょうか。 スタジオワークでは、複数のチームを編成して作品を生み出し ていきます。僕のスタジオ「Sandwich」には建築家、グラフ ィックデザイナー、3D モデラ―、プログラマー、そしてさま ざまな技法を駆使して実際に物質を加工するプロダクションチ ームといった無数の才能が集まって、毎日ディスカッションを しながら作業しています。 そして僕自身もそこに参加して、一緒に作業をしながら自分の やりたいことを具体的に伝えていきます。つまり概念だけでは なく、マテリアルの質感やプロセスを共有することを通じて、 何を目指しているのかを伝えるわけです。このように、共同作 業を通じたビジョンの共有をもっとも重視しています。 45

In your career as an artist, which project became a turning point for you? Could you tell us about its background?

If I were to choose a project, I think it would have to be “PixCell.” As a graduate student, I studied abroad in London for a few months, and when I returned, I bought my first PC and set up an Internet connection in my apartment in Kyoto. Back then, Internet was just beginning to spread more widely, and even just setting up the circuit at home was rare. So I thought about whether I could incorporate this in my artwork somehow. At that time, I was imagining a future society covered and pervaded by information, so I wanted to make something that would make people sense the beginning of such a world.

I began the artwork by using this newly connected Internet to acquire a taxidermy of a sheep. My idea was to buy a taxidermy and cover it up with material like a camera lens. That was how “PixCell” was born.

Just around then, I was contemplating how life might be made up of information. I was thinking about the relationships between life and information, and more broadly, the universe and life. In addition, the word “save” was also an important keyword for me at the time. That is, I was looking for ways in which sculpture—instead of information technology in computers—can create a new format to “save” objects before our eyes or objects we’ve ordered from elsewhere.

In this way, the birth of “PixCell” was also a moment when the concepts, ideas, and images that I had back then combined into one. I think that was a big step forward in developing my artworks.

Could you tell us about “Throne,” another example of your large-scale work?

That was an extremely challenging project. First of all, the Louvre Museum itself is a highly prestigious, eminent place in the whole of society, let alone the art world. I had to think carefully about what kind of work would be suitable for such a venue.

これは非常に大変なプロジェクトでした。まずルーブ ル美術館自体が美術界はもちろん、社会全体の中でも 権威を持った格式高い場所ですから、どのような作品 がふさわしいかを丁寧に考える必要がありました。

Also, it was very rare for the Louvre to host a contemporary art exhibition. There were only about five other artists before me, and I was the first Asian artist. Therefore, devising a way to present my artwork in order to be understood and accepted by the people of the Louvre became another hurdle to overcome.

また、ルーブル美術館での現代美術作品の展示はとて も珍しいことでした。これまでも 5 名ほどしか例が ありませんでしたし、アジアのなかでは僕が初めてで した。ですので、作品をどうやってルーブルの人に理 解してもらうか、どのようにプレゼンテーションする か、というのもハードルになりました。

In terms of the form of the sculpture, I referenced various symbols used in festivals and religious rituals as I developed it. I researched the history of the festival, especially how it evolved in its journey over the Silk Road and into Japan. With such contexts in mind, I envisioned a form that doesn’t exist in any culture.

造形的には、祭りや宗教の儀式においてどのようなシ ンボルが用いられてきたのかを参照しながらつくり込 んでいきました。特に「祭りがシルクロードをつたい ながら、どのように変遷して日本に入ってきたのか」 という歴史をリサーチし、それらの文脈をふまえつつ も、どの文化にも存在しないような造形を考えていき ました。

In terms of technique, I used gold leaf application that is also a traditional craft of Kyoto. In fact, the gold leaf technique is said to date back to ancient Egypt. It travelled on the Silk Road, eventually reaching Japan and developing into another unique method there.

The Louvre has a research group on the Egyptian gold leaf technique, and they also have a collection of artifacts related to its origins. In other words, a piece of artwork that incorporates gold leaf application is a significant element for both Japan and the Louvre.

技術的には京都の伝統工芸でもある金箔貼りが使われ ています。実は金箔技術はエジプトを起源としている らしく、そこからシルクロードを経て日本にたどり 着き、独自に発展したと言われています。そしてルー ブル美術館はエジプトの金箔技術に関する研究所を持 っていて、その起源にあたるコレクションも収蔵して いるんです。つまり、金箔技術を用いた作品というの は、日本とルーブル美術館双方にとって重要な要素と なるものなのです。

A “Throne” is the seat of a sovereign ruler, but in this artwork, I expressed it as an empty chair. This is based on the idea that from now on, AI and computer calculations will be increasingly influential for people’s decision-making and political-economical judgements—and perhaps the “Throne” is no longer a seat for a human monarch. The chair itself is very small, the size of a baby car seat. This expresses how the current presence of AI is still like a child.

大規模な作品として、2018 年にフランス・パリのル ーブル美術館で展示された「Throne」についても伺 いたいです。

「玉座」を意味する「Throne」ですが、本作では誰 も座っていない椅子として表現しました。これはこれ からの時代、人々の意思決定や政治経済の判断に AI をはじめとしたコンピューターの計算がますます影響 を与えていくだろうと考えた時に、もはや「Throne」 とは人間の王が座る椅子ではないのではないか、とい うストーリーに基づいています。椅子は非常に小さく て、チャイルドシートのようなサイズなのですが、こ れは「今の AI はまだ子供のような存在だ」というこ とを表しています。

Are there materials or certain projects that you would like to undertake in the future?

My head is constantly brimming with all kinds of ideas, so I’m wondering what to do first. Whether they’re materials or themes, there’s an infinite number of things I’d like to try, so perhaps the biggest issue for me is to figure out how to approach those things in my limited time. I think I have to be selective and decide how to materialise those things in reality.

これから挑戦したい素材や取り組みは何でしょうか。

Born in 1948, Kunio Kobayashi discovered bonsai at twenty-eight years old and has since taught himself the art. A master artist who has received the Prime Minister’s Award, the highest award at the Nihon Bonsai Sakufuten exhibition, four times, Kobayashi’s creativity continues to thrive even now, when he is in his late seventies. He is involved in spreading the art of bonsai both in and outside Japan, as well as in fostering new talent. We visited Shunkaen BONSAI Museum, which Kobayashi founded after fifteen years of planning and investing one billion yen himself, and spoke to him about the aesthetics of bonsai and his message for future generations.

The Profound Aesthetic Sense of Japan in BONSAI Throughout his career as a bonsai craftsman, now half a century long, Kobayashi has always pursued the essence of beauty in bonsai. One encounter which determined his approach to his creativity was with Japanese painting.

“I happened to become good friends with a Japanese painter, who was an acquaintance and customer of mine, and we began to talk passionately about bonsai together. Through these conversations, we realised that there is a profound connection between Japanese painting’s ways of expression with line and space, and the technique of bonsai. It was from this artist that I learned where beauty lies in bonsai.”

The sense of beauty in Japanese painting, he explains, has fed into his own bonsai works, which values line and space.

“To become somebody of note as a bonsai artist, you have to be able to take the tree you are about to shape and decide which side is the front. Then comes the line. You decide on the front, then you envision its complete form—how you would shape it over time, in which direction you would make it grow. That’s what I call the line.”

Kobayashi, who never had a teacher and trained himself in the art of bonsai, came to reflect on it through a wide perspective of its relationship to Japanese culture and nature.

“Bonsai began about 1,300 years ago in China and travelled to Japan 800 years ago in the Muromachi Period. Since then, it has become established in its current form, influenced by the aesthetic sense, the sensibilities, the philosophy, and the natural features of Japan. I feel that various elements deeply rooted in Japanese culture are condensed into bonsai, such as the subtle sense of ‘wabi-sabi’ (a worldview of accepting transience and imperfection) and ‘mono no aware’ (the pathos of things).”

Eventually, he arrived at the idea of “bonsai with character.” According to Kobayashi, there is a distinct difference between “something that looks pretty” and “something with character.”

“There is nothing more evocative, more full of character, than a bonsai that can make you feel the wind, which has withstood wind and snow, and the harsh conditions of nature over many years. If you’re only looking for something pretty, all you need to do is arrange it in a neat shape, so anyone can make that. You can feel nature and the ‘wind’ in bonsai created during the Meiji and Showa Eras, but nowadays, bonsai is becoming too pretty, I think. We often use expressions like ‘weathered by the wind and rain,’ or ‘weather the wind and snow of life’. The force of wind is truly awe-inspiring. Recently, the theme in my work has been to express what kind of wind is blowing past and against this bonsai.”

約半世紀にわたる盆栽職人人生の中で小林さ んは、盆栽の美の本質について探求し続けてき ました。そんな中で、創作の方向性を決めたひ とつのきっかけが日本画との出会いでした。 「たまたま知り合いでお客様だった日本画の 先生と仲良くなり盆栽談義を熱く交わすよう になるうちに、『線と空間』による日本画の表 現が盆栽と深く共通することを見出しました。 その先生から『盆栽の美がどこにあるか』を学 んだのです」 日本画の芸術感覚が、線と空間を大切にする小 林さんの盆栽にも活きているといいます。 「ひとかどの盆栽作家になるには、自分が手 をかけていく盆栽を手にして、まず正面を決

めることができなくてはなりません。次に線 が来ます。正面を決め、完成形のイメージを 描いき、時間を経た後に、どういう姿にして いくのか、どちらに伸ばしていくか。それが ライン、線です」

師匠を持たず独学で修行を重ねていった小林 さんは、幅広い日本の文化や自然とのかかわり から盆栽を見つめていくようになります。

「風雪に耐え、厳しい自然の試練に揉まれて 育った『風を感じる盆栽』にこそ味わいがあ ります。綺麗なものなら、揃えるだけですか ら誰にでも作れます。明治から昭和の盆栽は、 自然を取り入れた『風』を感じられるもので したが、最近の盆栽は綺麗になりすぎている と思います。よく『風雨にさらされて』とか 『風雪に耐えて』と言いますが、風の働きと いうのは本当に凄いのです。その盆栽に、ど んな風が流れて当たっているのか、その表現 が最近の私のテーマです」

「もともと盆栽はおよそ 1300 年前に中国で 生まれ、800 年前の室町時代に日本に伝わっ てきたものです。それ以来、日本人の美意識、 感受性、思想、風土などの影響を受けて現在の 形が確立されました。繊細な『わびさび』、『も ののあわれ』などといった深遠な日本の文化的 要素が凝縮して現れているものが盆栽だと感

そしてたどり着いたのが「味のある盆栽」で す。小林さんによると「綺麗なもの」と「味の あるもの」の間には明確な違いがあります。

“Bonsai is the dignity of life” 盆栽とは、命の尊厳である At Shunkaen BONSAI Museum, there is a memorial graveyard for bonsai trees that became withered. They have a funeral for the dead bonsai and memorialise them by capturing them in a photograph.

“What’s fascinating about bonsai is the dignity of life. It’s because of it has this dignity of life that I am drawn to bonsai. For instance, in bonsai of the shimpaku juniper (a kind of Juniperus chinensis in the cypress family, a tall coniferous evergreen characterised by the trunk which twists and becomes white like a bone at the core), there are works in which life and death exist side by side, and from a tree that is a thousand years old, you can sense a tremendous force of life. Bonsai teaches you about life. You mustn’t let such bonsai wither or treat it carelessly.”

For Kobayashi, coming face to face with bonsai is a “serious duel between one life and another.” The shimpaku bonsai’s exposed bone-white core of the trunk—expressing the border between life and death—leaves the viewer speechless. Whenever Kobayashi gives lectures, whether in or outside the country, he always talks about the preciousness of life.

“As long as I’m alive, bonsai will give me energy.” 「春花園 BONSAI 美術館」には、枯らしてしまった盆栽を供養するためのお墓が あります。亡くなった盆栽を弔い、写真に残して供養するのです。 「盆栽の魅力は命の尊厳です。命の尊厳があるから盆栽に惹かれるのです。真柏 ( しんぱく＝※注ヒノキ科ビャクシン属の常緑針葉高木で白く白骨化する幹の芯と ねじれが特徴 ) の盆栽などでは、生と死が同居している作品もありますし、樹齢千 年の木からはすさまじい生命力が感じられます。盆栽から命を学ぶことができるの です。そんな盆栽を簡単に枯らしたりぞんざいに扱ったりしてはなりません」 小林さんにとって、盆栽との対峙は「命と命の真剣勝負」です。真柏の盆栽では、 あえて白骨化した幹の芯を見せることで表現される「生死の境目」が観る者を圧倒 します。そんな小林さんは、国内外で行う講演会では必ず「命の尊さ」を伝えてい ます。 「生きているからこそ盆栽からエネルギーがもらえるのです。」 55

Half a Century of Bonsai: His Life and Passion 盆栽と出会って半世紀 好きだからこそ続けられる

Kobayashi, whose father was a horticultural farmer who grew plants and f lowers, took on t he fa m i ly bu si ne s s at f i r s t . W hen he discovered bonsai at twenty-eight years old, he gradually became absorbed in the depth of its world. Even after nearly fifty years, he is still as passionate as ever about bonsai.

“I work on things related to bonsai sixteen hours a day, but I don’t feel any stress at all.

I can keep going because I love it, and more than anything else, I’m truly happy that I found something I could love so much.”

Every day, many people from in and outside Japan visit Shunkaen BONSAI Museum, and Kobayashi’s apprentices who work there are also diverse. While there are fewer people who grow bonsai because of factors such as trends in housing, Kobayashi is committed 草花を育てる園芸農家を営む父の元に生まれて 家業を継いだ小林さんは、28 歳の時に盆栽と 出会い、次第にその面白みに魅せられていった といいます。それから半世紀近く経った現在も 盆栽への情熱が褪せることはありません。 「1 日 16 時間盆栽に関わって仕事をしていま すが、全くストレスは溜まりません。好きだか ら続けられるし、何よりこんなに好きなことを 見つけられたのが本当に嬉しいです」 「春花園 BONSAI 美術館」には連日国内外か ら数多くの人々が来館しますが、ここで働く弟 子たちの出身地も多彩です。住宅事情などの影 響で、盆栽を育てる人口が減る中、多くの若手 を育成する小林さんは盆栽職人という仕事の魅 57

“If you create a good piece of work, you are recognised in the form of awards and pricing, and you can feel a sense of achievement as well as build up your confidence. Bonsai is widely recognised as a form of art overseas, and it’s incredibly popular among young people as well. Becoming a bonsai artist is a promising career with a dream.”

Kobayashi, who has been delving into the art of bonsai over half a century, ref lects on his current position: “I’m at the last sta ge of my bonsai life, where I can express what I want to do. In the past , I used to have to focus on things that would bring me prof it and making pretty shapes, but now that I’ve been going on this path for about fifty years, I’m able to put into expression what I want to express myself.”

The Ikenobo school of ikebana flower arrangement has a history that dates back more than 560 years. Their creations capture the freshness of young leaves, the vibrant colours of blossoms, and the beautiful shapes of life in all kinds of flora, even leaves that have been eaten by insects or that are withering at the tips. We spoke to Senko Ikenobo, who will be passing on the long history of Ikenobo to future generations as the next Headmaster.

Childhood Memories: Enjoying Ikebana like Playing House Senko Ikenobo was born and raised in Shiunzan Chohoji temple (commonly known as Rokkakudo) in Kyoto. The temple is said to have been built

by Prince Shotoku, and is also known as the birthplace of ikebana. For Senko Ikenobo, who grew up in this heart of ikebana, the art of flower arrangement was a familiar presence.

Sometimes, she mingled with the grown-ups who came to learn the floral art and made some arrangements herself, using leftovers. Just as a child likes to mimic adults and try cooking or 61

putting on make-up, she recalls, “it was fun for me to get a taste of ikebana and make something.”

In her adolescence, however, she began to feel the pressure of having to inherit the legacy of the old family. Even while practising ikebana, she felt bound by the rules: “I thought whatever I did had to be proper, since I was part of the Ikenobo family.” From junior to senior high school, she was troubled by the burden of being a successor, but a turning point came when she went on to university in Tokyo.

池坊さんが生まれ育ったのは京都府の街中にある紫雲山頂法寺、通称「六角堂」です。 聖徳太子によって建てられたと言われ、いけばな発祥の地ともされています。そんない けばなの中心とも言える場所で育った池坊さんにとって、華道は身近な存在でした。 お花を習いに来る大人たちに混ざって、余った花材でいけることもあったそう。子ども が大人の真似をしてメイクや料理をするように、「いけばなをたしなんで作品にするこ とが幼心に楽しかった」と当時を振り返ります。 しかし、思春期は旧家を継ぐプレッシャーを感じるようになりました。「池坊の人間だ から、きちんとしなければ」と、いけばなをするにもルールにとらわれてしまいます。 中学校から高校まで跡継ぎの重圧に悩まされましたが、東京の大学への進学が転機とな りました。 Gen de Art April 2023

Passing on the Technique and Philosophy of Ikebana Senko Ikenobo left her hometown of Kyoto and threw herself into new surroundings in Tokyo. Putting some distance between herself and her home afforded a good opportunity to contemplate the family she had been born into and ikebana itself from an objective viewpoint. She realised that “in Kyoto, there are so many traditional cultures in the form of shops and industries that have lived on for centuries,” and she “wasn’t the only one responsible for inheriting a tradition.”

“I believe a form of culture is by no means upheld by a single artist alone. Many people join forces to pass on that culture,” she says in a tone of unwavering resolve. With that knowledge, she was able to take pride in her own role of passing on the culture to the next generation.

It is not only the technique of ikebana that she hopes to preserve and pass on. She also values the philosophy of ikebana, developed by her predecessors over generations. For example, Sen’o Ikenobo, an acclaimed floral artist in the Muromachi period, believed that “there is also splendour in the withered flower.”

Every kind of flora, from buds to withered flowers, each has their own shining beauty. It is a basic principle in ikebana, which seeks and reveres beauty in all forms of life, not only the kind of beauty that is visible to the eye, like flowers in full bloom. Senko Ikenobo believes it is also a valuable mentality for us today, who may be inclined to judge things by their looks, such as shapes or colours.

そんな池坊さんが守り継ごうとしているのは、いけばなの技術だけでは ありません。先代たちが練り上げてきた、いけばなの理念も大切にして います。たとえば室町時代、花の名手とされた池坊専応の提唱する「枯 れた花にも華がある」という考え方。 これは「草花とはつぼみから枯れる時まで、それぞれに輝きがある」と いう意味です。満開の花のような、目で見える美しさだけにとらわれず、 すべての命に美を見出して尊重しようとするいけばなの基本的な理念で もあります。池坊さんは、形や色などの見た目で判断しがちな現代の私 たちにも、この精神が大切だと考えているそうです。

技術とともに後世へ伝える

「文化というのは決して一人の芸術家だけで完結することではなく、多 くの人の力で文化は繋がれて行くと思っています。文化のバトンを繋ぐ という自身の役割に誇りが持てた」と話す池坊さんの言葉には、揺るが ない強い思いを感じました。

生まれ育った京都を離れ、東京の大学という新たな環境に身を投じた池 坊さん。距離を置いたことが、生家やいけばなについて客観視する良い 機会になりました。そこで得られたのは「京都には何百年も続く店や産 業といった “ 伝統文化 ” がたくさんある。後継者として伝統を担うのは 私だけではない」という知見です。

While she is set to become the next Headmaster, Senko Ikenobo is also open-minded about utilising new tools and ideas.

“When we look back at history, too, Ikenobo hasn’t been repeating the same things over the years. I believe they’ve always reflected what society sought, adapting to the times.”

Ikebana began as a way of arranging flowers to offer before the Buddhist altar. Since then, it has been passed on over many generations as a “living culture” that is deeply rooted in the everyday life of Japanese people. Ikebana’s transformations in accordance with the changing times were crucial for it to be preserved for posterity. Today, many houses don’t have a tokonoma (an elevated alcove in a Japanese-style reception room), so flowers are often placed on tables or in the entry space inside the front door. In response to this shift in lifestyle, a method of arrangement that departs from traditional forms called “Free Style” was born in Ikenobo.

It’s not just the new style Ikenobo has introduced. They have also made a bold move of producing an ikebana performance group of young men called “IKENOBOYS” and putting out videos of them. The key to disseminating the traditional culture of ikebana, crossing the boundaries of age and distance, seem to lie in today’s latest tools.

次期家元として伝統を守る立場の池坊さんですが、現代のツー ルや新しいことも柔軟に取り入れています。 「池坊は長い歴史のなかでも同じことを繰り返してきたわけで はありません。時代に合わせて、常に社会に求められるものを 反映してきたと思います」 仏前に供える花としてはじまったいけばなは、日本人の暮らし に深く根差した “ 生活文化 ” として脈々と受け継がれてきまし た。そのいけばなを後世に残すには、時代に合わせて変化して いくことが不可欠だったのです。現代では床の間の無い家も多 く、テーブルや玄関に花を飾るのが主流となっています。そん なライフスタイルの変化に応じて、池坊のいけばなでは伝統的 な様式にとらわれない「自由花」といういけ方も生まれました。 それだけでなく、若い男性を起用した「IKENOBOYS」という 華道グループのプロデュースや動画配信などにも挑戦。年齢や 距離といった壁を越えて伝統文化としてのいけばなを広める鍵 は、現代のツールにあるようです。 Gen de Art April 2023

Senko Ikenobo is not only committed to preserving the tradition, but also to communicating it to wider circles.

The philosophy of seeing “splendour in the withered f lower,” as well as ikebana’s minimalist expressions that place importance on striking a balance between the object and the space around it are aspects of the art that have garnered attention overseas, too.

“People of different nationalities and backgrounds can make a connection with each other through ikebana,” she says. “There’s a secret to that in ikebana, where one takes f loral materials of all shapes and sizes, and makes use of their qualities to create a unified world.”

“Enjoying culture and ar t is to f ind another point of comparison and judgement within yourself,” she adds.

“You find a place of your own that’s different from society.

I believe people can live even more like human beings through ar t . I hope anyone who reads this w ill a lso treasure their wish, their willingness to nurture their own sensibilities.”

She taught us much about how incorporating ikebana into our lifestyle can broaden our horizons and bring about changes in what we value in the world.

What made you decide you wanted to become an artist?

When I was graduating from senior high school, I thought about what I’m most suited for, what I like best, and what I’m good at. I loved drawing from when I was little, so I came to the conclusion that I should work hard at what I like. That’s what made me reflect on my aptitude, and I decided to become a designer. I applied to the Department of Design at Tokyo University of the Arts.

I passed the exams and started studying design, but when I met a painter, who was one of the teachers at the university, I began turning towards a career in painting before I knew it. I took the path of becoming an artist just as I was graduating.

Your paintings depict a wide range of subjects from things that exist in reality to fantastic worlds in the imagination. How do you choose your motifs?

I think of art as fiction. There are paintings that are far from reality as well as realist paintings that are true-to-life representations, but neither of them are actual reality. There’s a reason we call the

impossible, or flights of fancy, “esoragoto” (with the kanji character for painting, because paintings can exaggerate or glorify the truth).

I think it’s the point of painting to depict what’s not realistic.

If reality is considered a “perfect beauty,” there’s no need for art to express fiction. It’s precisely because reality isn’t perfect that art makes up for it by adding the missing beauty. I believe art exists for that purpose.

When I explore what to paint, I f ind something that’s slightly missing from the real world and paint it to offer some extra hope. I always have the feeling that the real world is imperfect.

There’s a line by the novelist Haruki Murakami that goes, “just like there’s no such thing as perfect despair.” There’s no such thing as perfect beauty in this world, but there’s also no such thing as perfect despair. If I fall into perfect despair about this world, there wouldn’t be any hope. So I believe that something can always make up for the imperfection. I pay attention to the beauty in this world and look for the missing “beauty” that I can add to it. That’s how I find my motifs.

芸術家を目指したきっかけを教えてください。 高校を卒業するとき、自分が何に一番向いているのか、何が好 きで得意なのかということを考えました。子供の頃から絵を描 くことがとても好きだったので、自分の好きなことに力を向け ようと思うようになりました。これが自分の「適性」を考える きっかけになり「将来はデザイナーになろう」と決めて東京藝 術大学のデザイン科の受験を決めました。

たような絵もあるのですが、どちらもやはり本当の現実ではな いのです。「絵空事」という言葉があるように、現実的ではな いものを描くのが絵画だと思っています。 現実がもし「完璧な美」とされるのなら、芸術がフィクション を描く必要はありません。現実が完璧ではないからこそ、現実 に足りない美をフィクションで補う。そのために芸術は存在し ているのではないかと考えています。

無事に合格し、デザインの勉強を始めたものの、大学で出会っ た画家の先生をきっかけに、いつしか画家になりたいと思うよ うになり、大学を卒業するのと同時に芸術家としての道を歩み 始めていました。

僕が何を描こうかなと考えたとき、現実のこの世界に少し足 りないものを探して「希望」を補ってあげたいと思いますね。 「この世の中が完璧じゃない」っていう思いはいつも持って います。

榎さんの作品には実在するものから目に見えない幻想的な世界 まで幅広く描かれていますが、作品のモチーフはどのように決 めているのでしょうか。

小説家の村上春樹の言葉に「完璧な絶望がないように」という 言葉があります。この世の中には完璧な美もないけれど、完璧 な絶望もありません。もしこの世界に完璧に失望してしまった ら、そこから希望も生まれません。だから必ず何かで補うこと ができると思いながら、世の中の美しいものに目を向けて、自 分が補うことのできる「美」を探し、モチーフにしています。

What is your art inspired by?

I majored in graphic design at university, so I learned from paintings that have an element of visual design. Which meant I had many opportunities to look at classic paintings.

I often take the design sense in classic paintings as material to build on and arrange it in a contemporary way.

I’m especially interested in Feng Shui. It’s part of the culture of ancient China, and back when there was no science, I think Feng Shui functioned as a kind of science. Like alchemy and astrology—in lieu of science, they must have helped people by giving people hope in life, as good omens.

It goes back to what I mentioned earlier. I paint things like Feng Shui and good omens so that people can have hope.

Those spider monkeys you paint have been all the talk.

How did you get into drawing them?

Tokyo University of the Arts is located inside Ueno Park.

Since Ueno Zoo was right next door, I used to go there often whenever I had something to mull over. The spider monkeys were the most fun to watch, so I have a vivid memory of observing them all the time. Because of that, whenever I think deeply about something, spider monkeys come to mind, and that’s what made me start painting them.

榎さんの作品はどんなものにインスパイアされているので しょうか。 僕は学生時代、グラフィックデザインを専攻していて、絵 画は視覚的なデザイン性を持っていることを学びました。 なので、古典絵画を見る機会が多かったこともあり、古典 絵画の持つデザイン性を題材にして、現代的にアレンジし たものを描くことが多いのだと思います。 なかでも風水は古代中国の文化にあるもので、まだ科学が なかった当時は風水が科学のような役割もしていたと思い ます。「錬金術」とか「占星術」とかも、科学に代わって、 人間の生活に希望を与える縁起の良いものとして役に立っ ていたのでしょう。先ほどのお話ともつながりますが、 人々が「希望」を持てるようにと風水や縁起の良いものを 描くようにしています。 榎さんの描く蜘蛛猿くんが大変注目されていますが、描き 始めたきっかけを教えてください。 僕の通っていた東京藝術大学は、上野公園の敷地内にあり ます。隣り合わせに上野動物園がありましたから、何か考 え事をする時間に動物園によく行っていました。そこで見 ていて一番楽しかったのが蜘蛛猿で、ずっと観察していた 記憶が強く残っています。それから何か物事を考えるとき に蜘蛛猿を思い出すので、描くようになりましたね。

What’s the secret behind your curiosity and eagerness to take on new challenges?

I turned what I love into my work, so for me, work is an extension of play. But if I prioritise my curiosit y, I can become too self ish, and t h i n gs wou ld n’t ea si ly lead to a job or be understood. At the same time, if I focus too much on making other people happy, it gets harder to think outside the box or to challenge myself. In reality, the finding a balance between those two approaches is extremely difficult.

More often than not, I have to sacrifice one or the other.

Sometimes I lose my confidence when I receive less recognition or praise. At times like that, what ’s most impor t ant is to recog nise t he work’s value myself and keep a firm grasp on my self-validation.

What kind of artist do you think is needed in this day and age?

This applies to all art, but when the world falls into a state of emergency, people say “art is unnecessary, art can wait.” They say that art isn’t something that’s immediately necessary for people’s lives. I believe art can exist when

people have enough to share, when everyone in society is living in happiness and prosperity.

So when hope is lost in a despairing world, there won’t be any more artists to come out of that. No matter how much despair the world is facing, we need fiction that becomes a beacon of hope.

When life is good for the people, we artists reap the benefits of their prosperity. So when society is suffering, we do what we can to give back to the people. We need to help create a society in which people can have enough to share once again.

榎さんの強い好奇心やチャレンジ精神の秘訣は 何でしょうか。 僕は自分の好きだった遊びの延長が仕事になっ ています。しかし自分の好奇心を優先してしま うと、自分勝手になってしまって仕事に繋がり にくかったり、理解されなかったりします。か と言って、人を喜ばせることばかりを目的にす ると、自由な発想やチャレンジすることがなか なかできなくなってしまいます。そこのバラン スが現実的にはとても難しく、両立できないこ との方が多いです。 人に認めてもらったり、褒めてもらうことが減

ると自分でも自信が持てなくなる時がありま す。そんな時は、自分が「これはいい」と認め て自己承認を強く持ち続けることが一番大切か なと思っています。 今の時代に必要なアーティストはどんな存在だ と思いますか？

存在していると思っています。なので、絶望的 な世の中で「希望」がなくなってしまうと、そ の後に続いていていく芸術家がいなくなってし まうのです。どんなに世界が絶望的な現実に直 面してしまったときでも「希望」を見失わない ようなフィクションを与える役割が必要だと思 います。

これは芸術全体としてですが、世の中が緊急事 態に見舞われると「芸術は不要不急」と言われ てしまいます。人の生活に直ちに必要なもので はないという見方をされてしまいます。 芸術は世の中が豊かでみんなが幸せに暮らして いる時に、人々の分け前をもらえるような形で

“Looking for new forms of exhibitions, new frameworks, becomes an extremely important element in contemporary art” 「より新しい展示とか展覧会の 枠組みを考えだしていくことが現代美術の 場合は大事な要素だと思っています」

Washida traces back his interest in art to his earliest childhood years. It was an influence from his father, the philosopher Kiyokazu Washida, whose hobby was oil painting. At university, Washida majored in the history of Western art, and he came to a turning point during that time.

“It was just around the time that the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo was opening. They were looking for part-time workers, so I applied. Through my work there, I had the opportunity to see all kinds of contemporary art and meet experienced curators. This made me feel more strongly that I definitely want to be a curator, that contemporary art is exciting.”

His time at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo led Washida on a path to becoming a curator. As he gained more experience at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, he explored the unique aspects of curating contemporary art.

In contemporary art curation, the curator develops an exhibition with a living artist, in contrast to exhibitions of classical art. One idea that the artists often presented to him was to put on an exhibition which goes beyond the museum’s institutional structure and framework. For example, he is exploring ways of presenting artworks that can be enjoyed not only indoors inside a museum, but also outside, as in the Setouchi Triennale.

Born in 1973 in Kyoto, Meruro Washida completed his Masters in Art History at the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo.

From 1999 to 2018, he served as the curator of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. He curated a wide range of collections, from solo exhibitions of Atelier Bow-Wow and Shimabuku to group exhibitions such as “Kanazawa Art Platform 2008” and “Architecture since 3.11.” After his freelance years, he became the director of the Towada Art Center in April 2020. We spoke to Washida, who works in the art world with a vision for the future, about how he sees the role of museums.

美術への関心は、かなり小さな頃からあったと言う鷲田さん。哲学者の父、 鷲田清一さんが油絵を趣味にしていたことが影響したようです。「美術に 関係する仕事がしたい」と西洋美術史を専攻していた大学生の鷲田さんに、 転機が訪れます。 「東京都現代美術館がちょうどオープンする時期で、アルバイトを募集し ていたので行くことになりました。その時に東京都現代美術館で初めて 色々現代美術を見たり先輩のキュレーターの人たちにお会いしたりして、 それが直接 『やっぱりキュレーターになりたいな』とか『現代美術面白い な』っていう風に思うようになったきっかけでした」 東京都現代美術館でのアルバイトを機に、鷲田さんはキュレーターとして の道を歩みだします。金沢 21 世紀美術館に在籍して経験を積む中で、現 代アートのキュレーションならではの特徴を見出しました。 現代アートのキュレーションは古典的な美術品の展示とは異なり「今生き ている作家」と展覧会をつくるそう。そこで作家からよく出るのが「美術 館の制度や枠組みを超えた展示をしたい」という意見。例えば瀬戸内国際 芸術祭のように、美術館の展示室の中だけでなく外でも美術品を鑑賞でき るような展示の方法を模索しているのだとか。

rt Loans: A Key to Protecting and Spicing Up the Museum

As with the 21st Cent ur y Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, the Towada Ar t Center is also a reg iona l mu seu m t hat specialises in contemporary art. Washida immediately accepted the offer of becoming the director there, eager to put his previous experience to good use as well as to contribute to the formation of culture and the long-term preservation of artworks. Since then, working as the director has opened up his eyes to new ideas from the perspective of a manager.

“When I was a curator, I considered my job to be connecting the artists’ works with their audience. Now, as a director, I see that the curator’s job is to connect four sides: the artist, the audience, the funders, and the staff.”

From a management point of view, he launched a new programme of artwork loans in April 2021 in order to put together fruitful collections under a limited budget.

In public museums in Japan, including the Towada Art Center, the ownership of the artworks in their collections belongs to governing bodies such as the city or the country that established the musuem.

But with the loans system, collectors can lend their artworks to the museum long-term while still retaining their ownership.

The museum can borrow artworks by the year, or even almost indefinitely, and exhibit them in permanent collections or special exhibitions.

By utilising the artwork loans system, the museum can collect ar t works and cult ural ar tifacts without spending money on purchasing the items. Collectors also benef it from having the artworks managed and preserved at no cost, as well as contributing to society by sharing the art with many people and making them useful for researchers.

“This way, we can flesh out a collection even with a limited budget, and I hope to share many ar t works with many people,” says Washida.

Washida explains that the loan system also helps to maintain the independence of the museum. Some contemporary artworks have a clear political element, and if the museum’s management depends on a cer tain governing body, there is a risk that the political statements may be restricted. In such a situation, the museum’s original purpose of offering a space where people can come into contact with diverse expressions is jeopardised. Therefore, Washida believes that it is crucial to decentralise the stakeholders and people who hold up the museum.

“In the present day, when population decline is considered a certainty, I think museums in Japan will also have no choice but to turn to a system in which civilian and governmental powers will work together to support the museum infrastructure. In this context, I believe forming a relationship between private collectors and museums through the loan system is moving in the right direction.”

十和田市現代美術館は、地方にある現代アー トの専門美術館という点で金沢 21 世紀美術館 と共通しています。「これまでの経験を活か しながら、文化形成や美術品の長期保存がで きる」と、鷲田さんは館長のオファーに即答したそう。館長に就任 してからは、経営者としての視点が広がったと言います。 「キュレーターだった頃は、アーティストの作品とお客さんとを繋 げるのが仕事だと思っていました。館長になってからはアーティス ト、観客、出資者、スタッフの 4 つを繋げていくのがキュレーター だと思うようになりました」 経営的な視点から、限られた予算の中でコレクションを充実させよ うと 2021 年 4 月に始めた取り組みが寄託制度です。 十和田市現代美術館を含めた公立の美術館は、設置者である市や国 などの行政機関が美術品の所有権を持っています。しかし寄託制度 では、コレクターに所有権を残したまま美術館が長期的に作品を借 用。年単位または半永久的に作品を借りて、常設展や企画展に出展 します。 寄託制度を活用すると、美術館側は作品購入費をかけずに作品や文 化財を収集できるのだとか。コレクター側も管理コストがかから ず、大勢の人に見てもらったり研究に役立てたりして社会貢献がで きるといったメリットがあります。 「こういう形を取ることによって購入予算は限られていてもコレク ションを充実させて多くの人にたくさんの作品を見てもらうことが できたらと思っています」 また、寄託制度は美術館の独立性を守ることにもつながると言う鷲 田さん。現代美術の中には政治色の強い作品もみられますが、行政 だけが美術館の運営をしているとポリティカルな表現が制限される 危険性があります。すると多様な表現に触れる場所という、美術館 本来の機能を失いかねません。そこで鷲田さんは、美術館を支える 人を分散させるのが重要だと主張します。 「人口減少が確実視される状況で、日本の美術館も今後、民間の力 と行政の力とが両方で美術館を支えていくような形に向かっていか ざるをえないと思っています。その中で、民間のコレクターの作品 を美術館が預かる関係を築くのは目指すべき方向だと思います」 Gen de Art April 2023

Museum Now: The Museums’ Role in Today’s World In recent years, there is a strong emphasis on regional museums to contribute to the revitalisation of the local neighbourhood. Washida seeks to develop the Towada Art Center’s role not only as a space to exhibit artworks, but also a place where local residents and tourists will gather.

“What will happen, or what can we make happen, when artists who visit from somewhere else encounter the land of Aomori and the people who live there? I believe that’s of the utmost importance.”

Through introducing the art loan system, cultivating volunteers who support exhibitions, and other initiatives, Washida continues to change the way the museum functions. In his current approach to the museum’s way of being, he wishes to expand his vision, which had been leaning toward Western countries before, to other regions, while being attentive to history.

“How did artists capture and connect regions to the world up till now?

And in contrast, how did artists distinguish Japan from the world, how did they see the individuality of Japan and reflect it in their artworks? I want to study those histories as well.”

いま求められている美術館のあり方 近年、地方の美術館はまちづくりへの貢献も重要視される傾向にあるそう。美術品を展示するだけでなく、地元の人や観光客が集 まる場所としての役割も考えていきたいと鷲田さんは語ります。 「青森という場所やそこにいる人と外から来るアーティストの出会いによって、どういうことが起きるのか・起こしていけるのか が非常に重要だと思っています」 寄託制度の導入や作品の鑑賞をサポートするボランティア育成などを通じ、美術館の変革を進める鷲田さん。美術館のあり方と向 き合うにあたり、これまで欧米に偏っていた視点を別の地域にも広げること、そして歴史にも目を向けることを大切にしたいと言 います。 「今までの作家がどのように地方と世界を捉えて繋げようとしてきたのか。逆に海外と区別して、日本の独自性とは何かを考えど のように作品に結びつけてきたのかといった歴史も見ていきたいと思います」

京都大学法学部卒業、東京藝術大学大学院修了。東京藝術大学大学院国際芸術創造研 究科教授、金沢２１世紀美術館館長。フランス藝術文化勲章（2015 年）、ブラジル 文化勲章（2017 年）受賞。イスタンブール、上海、サンパウロ、シャルジャ、タイ などでの国際展を手がけ、キュレーターとして気鋭の才能を誇る長谷川祐子さんにお 話を伺いました。

Yuko Hasegawa graduated from the Law Faculty at Kyoto University, and she completed a Master’s degree at Tokyo University of the Arts. She is currently a professor in the Graduate School of Global Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts and the director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. She was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France (2015) and the Ordem de Rio Branco in Brazil (2017). Known for her ingenuity and talent as a curator, she has worked on major international exhibitions in numerous locations, including Istanbul, Shanghai, São Paulo, Sharjah, and Thailand. We spoke to her about her curatorial vision.

In the beginning, she jumped right into curatorial work without understanding it completely, and she picked up various skills and pieces of knowledge on the job.

“A curator’s work is extremely wide-ranging,” Hasegawa explains.

“Not only do we produce exhibitions, we also develop concepts for museums, publish books, and so on. We arrange all kinds of ways to display or output art-related materials. I believe our job is to form connections—to create spaces in which people can encounter art. For example, if you exhibited the works of Van Gogh and Katsushika Hokusai together, that meeting of two artists would generate a different meaning. The curator’s function is to make connections and spark off new meanings. In addition, we’re also responsible for communicating with the audience while having a shared sense of purpose or awareness of the issues at stake with the artists.”

The curator is a researcher, a traveller, a facilitator of new discoveries, and a producer, working with art as a foundational starting point. Hasegawa sees the curator’s role as consisting of diverse, interwoven layers.

The Fascinating Work of Curator

「キュレーター」 の仕事との 出会いとその魅力

Ever since she was little, Hasegawa had a special skill of drawing things from memory. She read many books related to art, and she hoped to choose a career that had something to do with paintings.

Influenced by her parents’ idea of education, however, she went on to study in the Law Faculty at Kyoto University. At first, she intended to work in the legal world while continuing to paint as a hobby, but she realised it was too difficult to keep up both. After graduating from university, she enrolled in Tokyo University of the Arts to start afresh. There, she discovered contemporary art, and she set her heart on becoming a curator to work with artists who live in the present.

幼いころから物を見てそれを記憶する視覚的な力に長けていた 長谷川さんは、見た物を再現して描くことが得意でした。美術 関連の本をよく読み将来は絵に関わる仕事を望んでいました。 しかし、親の教育方針の影響で京都大学の法学部に進みます。 法曹界で働きながら趣味として絵を続けるつもりでしたが、そ れほど器用ではないと感じ、京都大学卒業後、東京藝術大学に 通い直します。そこで現代アートと出会い、現在に生きるアー ティストと仕事ができる「キュレーター」を志します。 最初は、キュレーターという仕事を理解しないまま入ってい き、現場でさまざまなことを学ぶうちに会得していったという 長谷川さんはキュレーターの仕事をこう語ります。 「キュレーターは展覧会を作るだけではなく、美術館をプロデ ュースしたり、本を出版したりなど非常に広範に渡ります。ア ートに関するあらゆるアウトプットをプロデュースすること で、人々がアートと出会える場所を作る『つなげる仕事』だと 考えています。例えば、ヴァン・ゴッホと葛飾北斎を一緒に展 示した時、2 人のアーティストが出会うことで別の意味が生ま れます。キュレーターは、つなげて「新たな意味を形成する」 役割も果しているのです。さらに、アーティストと共に一つの 問題意識を持って観客に発信する役割もあります」 アートを基点としたリサーチャーであり、トラベラー。新しい ことを起していくファシリテーターかつプロデューサーでもあ る。様々な役割が複層的に混ざっている仕事だと長谷川さんは 考えています。

Going International and the Eye for Choosing Art When she was a Master’s student at Tokyo University of the Arts, Hasegawa worked parttime as an interviewer journalist, and she met many international artists through her work.

“1980s Tokyo was a remarkably international place. So many artists were coming to Japan. I had the opportunity to interview the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and the artist Keith Haring, and I came into contact with their various, dynamic ways of thinking. It was a fantastic experience for me to witness the changing scene of contemporary art in real time.”

Along with this experience, Hasegawa’s tendency to put her ideas directly into action made her turn outward to artworks that were gaining attention overseas.

She was driven by a thirst for knowledge that crossed national borders.

On her process of choosing artworks, she says, “A curator is a professional at developing exhibitions and writing texts, but before you get to all that, the ability to make value judgements on how a piece of art is exceptional is vital. When I make those judgements, I consider only the artwork, not the artist.

That’s because an artwork, once it’s created by the artist out of their own thought process and world view, begins to take on a life of its own.”

海外アートに目を向ける きっかけと作品の選び方 東京藝術大学時代、アルバイトで取材ライターをしていた長谷川さ んは、そこで多くの海外アーティストに出会います。 「1980 年代の東京は非常にインターナショナルな場所で、多くの 芸術家が来日していました。写真家のロバート・メイプルソープや 画家のキース・ヘリングに取材する機会があり、彼らの多様でダイ ナミックな考え方に触れました。リアルタイムで現代アートが変化 していく様に立ち会えたのはとても良い経験でした」 さらに自分の考えをストレートに実行していく長谷川さんの性格も 相まって、日本国内に縛られず海外で話題のアートに目を向け、 様々なことを学びたいという気持ちが芽生えていったそうです。 長谷川さんの作品選びについても伺いました。 「キュレーターは展示やテキストを書くプロですが、それ以前に作 品がどのように優れたアートであるかという価値判断が重要です。 その時、作家ではなく作品のみで判断しています。なぜなら、作家 が自らの思考プロセスと世界観で作った作品は、別物として動き始 めるからです」

Envisioning the Future of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

“I placed much impor tance on barrier-free accessibilit y and hospitality. We created independent rooms of varying proportions on the ground floor, and they are designed in such a way that allows the visitor to spend time smoothly across these spaces.”

“Our aim was to create an ‘open museum’ that interacted and breathed with the city that it’s a part of. Also, we wanted it to be a space where not only the artworks but also the people inside the museum look beautiful—a place to celebrate life.”

Inside the museum, there is a public space in the form of a wide corridor, about twice the size of an exhibition room. Visitors can enjoy the view of the courtyard while reminiscing on the artworks they saw, or talking with each other. Hasegawa believes that the contrast between tension and relaxation, between the moments when people are viewing an artwork and the rest of the time, can stimulate their sensibilities and thinking.

At the end, we asked Hasegawa about the future she envisions for the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.

“We recently organised ‘Kacchu Anatomy: The Aesthetics of Design and Engineering,’ in which contemporary artists desig ned a n ex hibit ion of t radit iona l Japa nese a r mour, under the theme of ‘Encountering History, Imagining the Future’. For the second project, we are working on DX (digital t ra nsfor mat ion). We a re interested in what k ind of new creations and sensations become possible when we utilise technology. The third project is about new ecology. It’s not only concerned about the natural environment, but about how art and museums can play an active part in the ecosystem, as well as incorporate the ecosystem in a stimulating manner in their work. Our theme for 2024 is to think about those ideas related to mutual cooperation.”

コンセプトと未来ビジョン

Since contemporary art often uses diverse elements, such as painting, video recordings, sounds, and smells, independent exhibition spaces enable the artists to express themselves freely. Traditional museums, for security reasons, often have a solemn atmosphere, with only one point of entry or exit, where visitors would climb a set of stairs to enter the exhibition.

Hasegawa broke away from these conventional settings and installed glass walls on the whole structure, enabling visitors to gaze out over the surrounding city.

「バリアフリーやホスピタリティーを重 要視しました。一階層の建物にプロポー ションの異なるそれぞれが独立した部屋 を作り、この空間で過ごす時間がスムー ズに流れていくよう設計しています」 現代アートは、絵画や映像、音、匂いな ど多様な要素を用いて展示するため部屋 が独立していた方が、作家は自由に表現 ができます。これまでの美術館はセキュ リティーの関係上、出入口が一つで階段 を上がってはいるといった重々しい雰囲

気がありましたが、それを一切辞めガラ スで全面を覆い街を見渡せるようにした と言います。 「街と美術館が相互に関係を持ち、呼吸 するような『開かれた美術館』を目指し ました。また、作品だけでなく美術館に いる人たちも綺麗に見え『生が祝福され る場所』にしたいと考えました」 館内には展示室の倍ぐらいの広さのパブ リックスペースー廊下があり、そこから 中庭を眺めながら鑑賞した作品を思い返 したり、人と会話する時間を楽しめたり します。作品を鑑賞する時間とそれ以外 の「緊張と弛緩」で人は感性や思考を活 性化できると長谷川さんは言います。

最後に、金沢 21 世紀美術館の未来ビジ ョンについて伺いました。 「『 歴 史 と 出 会 い、 未 来 を 考 え る 』 を テーマにしていて現代作家が甲冑の展 示 を デ ザ イ ン す る『 甲 冑 の 解 剖 術 ― 意 匠とエンジニアリングの美学』なども 開 催 し ま し た。 ２ つ 目 は DX（ デ ジ タ ル ト ラ ン ス フ ォ ー メ ー シ ョ ン ） で す。 テ ク ノ ロ ジ ー を 活 用 し、 ど の よ う な 新 しい創造や感覚が可能になるかに興味 が あ り ま す。3 つ 目 が 新 し い エ コ ロ ジ ー で す。 自 然 環 境 だ け で な く、 ア ー ト や 美 術 館 が、 エ コ シ ス テ ム の 中 で 活 か さ れ た り 活 か し た り す る。 そ う い っ た 相 互 扶 助 的 な こ と を 考 え る の を 2024 年のテーマにしています」

Taeko Yamazaki 山﨑 妙子

Taeko Yamazaki graduated from the Department of Economics at Keio University and completed her PhD at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Research in the Fine Arts. From 2007, she became the director of Yamatane Art Foundation and of Yamatane Museum of Art. Having been instructed in Japanese painting by the late Ikuo Hirayama, Yamazaki is well-versed in Japanese art. She curates various exhibitions to spread the appeal of Japanese painting even more across the world. Taeko Ya ma za k i lived w it h her g ra nd fat her Ta neji Yamazaki, the founder of Yamatane Museum of Art, from when she was one year old.

“At first, I wanted to work in the international department at the Yamatane Securities brokerage firm, which was managed by my grandfather and my father, so I went on from Keio Girls Senior High School to the Economics Department at Keio University. But I discovered a passion for Japanese art, which has strong ties to my family, and I studied so hard to get into graduate school at Tokyo University of the Arts.”

After enrolling in the Graduate School at Tokyo University of the Arts, she was encouraged by the Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama to learn the practise of Japanese painting as well as art history. He told her, “It’s a rare opportunity to be in an art school; I hope you’ll learn the practical skills of Japanese art and become a researcher, and eventually a museum director, who can understand the heart of the artist.”

Yamazaki learned how important it is in Japanese painting to have knowledge of the materials and the techniques.

Then, in 2007, she became the director of Yamatane Art Foundation and of Yamatane Museum of Art. She takes an earnest approach to her work as the third director of 山種美術館創設者である祖父の山﨑種二さんと、一歳の 頃から一緒に暮らしていた山﨑妙子さん。 「祖父や父の経営していた山種証券の国際部に就職した いと思い、慶應女子高から慶應義塾大学経済学部に進学 しましたが、私の家と深く結びついている『日本美術』 と関わっていきたいという考えを強く持つようになり猛 勉強して東京藝術大学の大学院に入学しました」

“My grandfather, who was the first director, developed his collection and was able to establish the Museum. My father, the second director, continued his legacy. As the third director, I am turning my attention to new challenges in passing on Japanese art to future generations, such as the research and preservation of our collection, and fostering young and upcoming Japanese painters.”

Yamazaki believes that the beaut y of nature and its seasons in Japanese painting has the power to enrich one’s mind and spirit.

“I’d like people to rediscover Japanese culture and history, and the beauty of landscapes and flora through Japanese painting—to come into contact with the aesthetic unique to the Japanese people, that has been passed on since ancient times.”

Yamazaki tries to shape the Museum as a place to which people can return, where they can experience graceful hospitality. Visitors can not only view the artworks, but also familiarise themselves with the art of Japanese painting through the entire Museum, and enjoy moments of peace that they can incorporate into their own daily lives. 「初代である祖父はコレクションの形成と美術館の開館 を成し遂げ、二代目の父はそれを存続させてきました。 私は三代目として、所蔵品の研究や保存、若手の日本画 家の育成といった『日本画を未来に引き継ぐ』という新 たな課題と向き合っています」 日本画が持つ季節感や自然の美しさは、心を豊かにする 力を持っていると山﨑さんは語ります。

山﨑さんは東京藝術大学大学院に入学後、日本画家の平 山郁夫さんの「せっかく藝大に入ったのだから、日本画 の実技も学んで画家の心がわかる研究者、そして美術館 長になってください」という言葉に導かれ、美術史と合 わせて日本画の実技も学び、日本画において素材と技法 を知ることの大切さを学びました。

「日本画を通じて、日本の文化や歴史、風景、草花などの 美を再発見していただき、古くから受け継がれている日本 人ならではの美意識に触れていただければ嬉しいです」

そして、2007 年より山種美術財団理事長兼山種美術館館 長に就任。三代目館長としての課題に真摯に向き合って います。

作品を鑑賞するだけでなく、美術館全体を通して日本画 に親しみ、生活に取り入れられるような癒しの時間を過 ごしていただけるよう工夫しています。

「上質なおもてなし」「今還る場所」としての美術館に なるよう心がけている山﨑さん。

Preserving and Appreciating Japanese Art: “In Japanese painting, the artist paints with iwa-enogu (mineral pigments) on materials like silk or washi (traditional Japanese paper). It’s sensitive to dryness and light, which means it can easily be damaged. So at Yamatane Museum of Art, we put on about five to six exhibitions of our collection each year instead of having a permanent exhibit.”

Yamatane Museum of Art strikes a balance between preserving the artworks and creating a favourable environment for their appreciation. In addition to maintaining the suitable temperature, humidity, and brightness for protecting the artworks in the best state possible, they pay much attention to the lighting and the presentation so that they can show the artworks’ texture, colours, and any delightful features to the greatest extent.

There are also ukiyoe in the collection at Yamatane Museum of Art. Since ukiyoe is even more sensitive to light than Japanese painting, and its colours can fade more easily, they put in the utmost care to set up the ideal conditions for preservation as well as exhibition.

“But the issue I’m tackling now is that there still isn’t enough recognition of Japanese painting both within Japan and in other countries,” she goes on.

“At our Museum, we’re continuing to disseminate information on social media platforms, and we hope to create new points of contact between people and Japanese painting, so that it feels more familiar to them in their everyday lives.”

“With the digital tools we have now, there are new ways of enjoying artworks, and there are also the physical way of appreciating them, in which people can come into direct contact with the power of the artwork that reaches them across time. Nowadays, we can touch Japanese culture in both ways. In this age of globalisation, I consider it part of our Museum’s mission to spread the knowledge of Japanese painting as an element of Japanese culture to more people all over the world.”

The Covid-19 pandemic since 2020 became an opportunity to focus on their challenges for the future. Ever since the Museum’s establishment, their collection had only been presented as physical exhibitions for over fifty years. But now, they are exploring how they can reach out to more people in Japan and overseas, to pass it on to the future.

“In 2026, Yamatane Museum of Art will have the sixtieth anniversary of its foundation. Over the next five to ten years, we hope to take on

I hope people living outside Japan will also have a look at the online content of our Museum and experience the colours, compositions, and other elements of Japanese painting to stimulate their interest. Then, when they visit Japan and see the real artwork, they might take pleasure in the unique texture and touch of Japanese painting that can only be felt in person.”

FINE DINING This issue features the motto of Kenji Gyoten of "Sushi Gyoten," one of the two restaurants in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures to receive three stars in the Michelin Guide. Though initially hesitant to take over his grandfather's sushi restaurant, he resolved to face himself by traveling alone to New Zealand. His philosophy includes the idea that "unceasing devotion" is required to create sushi, which is sure to strike a chord with readers.

We also introduce Jean-Bruno Gosse, a French cuisine artist who works in Burgundy. The belief of Kenji Gyoten: The Youngest Michelin Three-star Recipient in Japanese History The restaurant “Sushi Gyoten” in Fukuoka Prefecture is one of the only two restaurants that have achieved three stars in the Michelin Guide of Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures. Gyoten’s Edo-style sushi—a culmination of carefully selected ingredients and the artistry of a craftsman developed over years of research—continues to enchant visitors to the restaurant.

This establishment, which represents the Kyushu region, is led by Kenji Gyoten, who was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture and grew up watching his grandfather run a sushi restaurant. THE SECRET TO SUCCESS:

A SOUL-SEARCHING JOURNEY

Kenji Gyoten was born in 1982 in a seaside town in Yamaguchi. His grandfather ran a sushi restaurant, so sushi was part of his everyday life from when he was little. He still remembers the mornings when, around the time he would leave for school, his grandfather would come back from the market and place the fish of the day in the kitchen.

Gyoten, however, was hesitant to inherit the family trade at first. At eighteen years old, when his peers were deciding on their future, he flew to New Zealand alone and reflected on himself. Through his travels in an unfamiliar land, he learned many things, and at the same time, he became committed to the path of becoming a sushi chef.

“What influenced me most was when I became aware of taking responsibility for myself. As I was away from home for the first time, I had to depend on myself and myself alone in order to survive.

From this experience, I realised that, to succeed as a chef, I need to take full responsibility for all of my actions and decisions.”

Later, he graduated from Tsuji Culinary Institute, then gained more experience at a well-known restaurant in Tokyo from when he was twenty-one to twenty-six, at which point he became independent.

He opened a sushi place in his native prefecture of Yamaguchi.

1982 年、山口県の海に囲まれた町に生まれた行天さん。祖 父が寿司屋を営んでおり、幼少期から寿司は身近なものだっ たそうです。学校に行く時間になると祖父が市場から帰って きて、キッチンに魚を置く風景を覚えていると当時を振り返 ります。 しかし行天さんは、家業を継ぐことには迷いがあったそう。 同世代が進路を決める 18 歳のときには、単身ニュージーラ ンドへ渡って自身と向き合いました。異国の地を旅すること で数々の学びを得るとともに、寿司職人として歩む決心をし たと言います。 「最も大きな影響は、自分自身に責任を持つことを認識した ことです。初めて家を離れて、生き残るために自分自身だけ に頼らなければならなかったのです。この経験から、私はシ ェフとして成功するためには、自分の行動と決断に完全に責 任を持つ必要があることを悟りました。」 その後、辻調理師専門学校を経て 21 歳から都内の有名店で 研鑽を積み、26 歳になる年で独立。故郷の山口県で、寿司 屋を開業しました。 Gen de Art April 2023

As a sushi chef, Gyoten places importance on throwing oneself into practising and honing one’s craftsmanship. The ability to judge the quality of ingredients is part of those skills.

He goes to the markets himself, not to mention going to visit the fishermen and women directly.

That way, he builds up his own knowledge of fish and makes a selection of the best fish of the day in light of the conditions of the fishing grounds.

It was because he was familiar with the lay of the land and could research it more easily that he opened his first restaurant in his hometown.

“I focus on looking inwards and working towards surpassing my own limits. This approach liberates me from particular attachments and allows me to

nurture my true passion.”

He constantly questions himself, “Is this really good enough?” He always explores the best way possible for everything, even the way he cooks rice, making minute adjustments to the heat level of the gas, the temperature of the water, and so on, in order to find a method that makes the most delicious rice. The skills of a craftsman shines even in those areas that are invisible to the customers at a restaurant, such as purchasing and preparing the ingredients.

“As sushi chefs, we have to take good care of our physical health. We have to maintain our health at all times, paying attention to tired skin or bad breath. To become a sushi chef, you need to have

constant devotion to your own craftsmanship, and to become liberated from attachments. Instead of clinging to what’s happening in the present, you should look at things from a wider perspective.”

Three years after opening the restaurant in Yamaguchi, Gyoten decided to move to Fukuoka.

Rather than clinging to the popularity he gained in his hometown, he challenged himself to strive for new heights.

In 2012, he opened the current “Sushi Gyoten” i n Fu k u o ka . Ju s t a s h e h ad a lways do n e, Gyoten kept on devoting himself to honing his craftsmanship and became the youngest chef in Japan to win Michelin three-star in 2014 at the age of thirty-one.

おいしくなる方法を模索していると語ります。仕入 れや仕込みといったお客さんからは見えない部分に も、職人の技は光っているのです。

自身が市場に出向くことはもちろん、漁師に会いに 行くこともあるそうです。それによって魚の知識を 蓄え、漁場の状況を鑑みながらその日のベストな魚 介を揃えます。地元に最初の店を構えた理由も、土 地になじみがあってリサーチを徹底しやすいためで した。

「寿司職人として、私たちは身体的健康を怠ること はできません。疲れた肌や口臭など、身体のあらゆ る側面に気を配り、健康を維持する必要があります。 寿司職人になるためには、自分自身の職人技への不 断の献身心と、執着から解放される必要があります。 現在起こっていることに過度に固執することはせ ず、大局を見ることに焦点を当てるべきです。」

The Key to a Broader Perspective: Understanding Culture and Art Even after his restaurant achieved three stars and grew still more popular, Gyoten’s self-disciplined approach hasn’t changed. He is strict, never allowing himself to take the easier route. He continues to sharpen his skills with the broad perspective of “the culture of sushi” in mind.

While there are more and more restaurants that offer sushi overseas, Gyoten wants to be at the cutting edge of this culinary culture precisely because it originated in Japan.

Not only does he pay close attention to developing his technique as a craftsman, he also observes the evolution of the culture over time. Just as sushi transformed from something that were enjoyed at food stalls outside in the old days into a meal to be eaten indoors, sushi culture is changing with the times. Gyoten brings up modern art as one example of culture that reflects the present age.

“As a sushi chef, I feel that if we place high value on the beauty and the complexity of art, we can push the limits of our own creativity. Interest in art and culture is absolutely necessary for broadening our horizons and worldview.”

Gyoten’s way of thinking can be felt in how he set up his establishment as well, with its selection of artworks and tableware. His sole wish is for visitors to enjoy their experience at the restaurant where the best dishware and ingredients, and the craftsman in his best condition all meet in one space.

Chef Gosse grew up in a family that valued the importance of fresh and high-quality food. His mother, who was an excellent cook, taught him how to appreciate the flavours of locally grown produce and the benefits of sustainable living.

Ultimately, it was the early exposure to the world of food that sparked Gosse’s interest in culinary arts and pushed him to pursue it as his career. Inspired by legendary French chefs, such as Paul Bocuse, Bernard Loiseau, Georges Blanc, Alain Ducasse, he began his education in culinary arts.

After completing culinary school, Jean-Bruno worked in several renowned restaurants, where he honed his skills and gained valuable experience in the industry. Over time, he had a chance to work in restaurants in Côte d'Azur and Courchevel, but his path has led him to Burgundy, where he fell in love with the region’s cuisine and nature, and decided to stay.

“Cooking has always been something that meant a lot. There is reunification with family, with friends,” – he recalls. “I had two passions – cooking and art. I was drawing, painting and sculpting but, little by little, I realised I always ended up turning to cooking.”

Despite his brilliant career in the best restaurants around the country, Gosse always craved more. He wanted to create a dining experience that not only offered great flavours but was also aligned with his values of sustainability and conscious living. This is how Loiseau Des Ducs came to be.

Chef Jean-Bruno’s desire led him to open Loiseau Des Ducs, a restaurant that focuses on using fresh, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. He believes that sustainable cooking is not only good for the environment but also results in a better-tasting food.

At Loiseau Des Ducs, Chef Jean-Bruno and his team create dishes that are both visually stunning and flavourful. He takes a creative approach to French cuisine, using unique ingredients and techniques to make elegant and delicious dishes.

He mentions that French cooking principles have always been at the heart of his philosophy when it comes to food preparation: “My cuisine relies on the basics of French cuisine. It’s always a little bit of my common thread, in those truly classic recipes.”

One of chef Jean-Bruno’s signature dishes is the “Escargot en Persillade”, a classic French dish featuring snails cooked in parsley and garlic butter, which is served in a creative way with the use of vibrant green colours and creative placement of ingredients to reflect the artistic approach of the chef to his dishes.

“I have always been fascinated by anything that’s a little bit in abstract art or the art of cubism, with their close attention to small details,” – Gosse adds. “I would say that is something that I also find in the kitchen, it is this way of detailing the colours and putting accent points on the plate, a bit like a painter, always with this little touch that makes you look at the whole thing in a different way.”

Gosse also mentions that one of the important experiences for him in his career as a chef was an understanding that he does not have to work alone. “We work as a team of several people. And we really need to work together to reach our goals,” – he explains, describing the environment of a restaurant.

Commitment to Sustainability When asked about his inspiration for Loiseau Des Ducs, Chef Jean-Bruno says: “I wanted to create a restaurant that reflects my love for French cuisine and my values of sustainability.

At Loiseau Des Ducs, we strive to create a dining experience that is both refined and eco-friendly.”

“We source our ingredients from local farmers and producers who share our values of sustainability and ethical practices.

By using fresh and seasonal ingredients, we create dishes that are not only delicious but also have a lower carbon footprint,” – he goes on to say, explaining how the restaurant applies principles of sustainability to its everyday work.

In addition to his culinary creations, Chef Jean-Bruno is also passionate about educating others on the importance of sustainable living. He frequently hosts workshops and events that promote conscious cooking and eco-friendly practices.

Every day, I create Japanese paintings in Kyoto, where one can sense the country’s rich history and seasonal beauty. From my base in Kyoto, I hope to spread and to deepen the knowledge of Japanese paintings for people all over the world.

I believe “open space” is crucial in Japanese painting. Instead of drawing everything in a painting, I leave some space open. To invite the viewer to sense or to feel something in that open space—that’s the most difficult yet fascinating part.

When I gaze at my subject for a painting, I am trying to capture something invisible that hovers beyond the subject itself. Things that have disappeared through the passage of time, the pulse and the movements of life itself, the evanescent things that cannot be voiced—still and silent, I wait for them to appear gradually and come closer to me.

When people look at my artwork, they often tell me that their impression of it changes between the first moment they saw it and afterwards, when they’ve taken more time to observe it. I wonder whether those invisible things are passed on from one person to another through the “space” in my artwork. That’s my hope.

I put together a book of my artworks, Ekotoba (Language of Painting), during the Covid-19 pandemic and donated it to more than 250 schools in Kyoto. I would be happy if students picked it up by chance at the school library and felt soothed by the Japanese paintings. Later, I began to sell the book and receive orders for it from overseas as well. I feel that I have taken a step forward in sharing my art across the oceans and spreading the joy of Japanese painting.

From Kyoto to the World

京都から世界へ

日本の豊かな歴史と四季折々の美しさが感じられる生まれ育った街、京都で 日々 作品を紡いでいます。京都から日本、さらに世界の人たちへ。日本画のこ とをも っと知っていただき深めていただきたい。そうした想いから冒頭の言葉 を創作メ ッセージとして掲げています。 日本画は「間 ( ま )」が大切だと思っています。絵を描き切るだけではな く、描い ていない空間にも観る人たちに何かを感じ取ってほしい、そして、そ れがとても 難しくまた楽しみでもあると。 描く対象物を見つめる時、その先にある目には見えないものを感じ、捉えよ うと しています。時の流れの中で消えていったもの、生の息吹、営み、声にな らない ものたちが少しずつ見え始めこちらにやってくる。その時をじっと待ち 続けます。 絵を観てもらう時、見た瞬間とじっくりと見た後の印象が変わる、とよく言 われ ます。それは「間」から、その目に見えないものたちが観てくれた人たち へ伝承 するかの如く伝わったのではないか、と感じています。そして、それを 願ってい ます。

THE ART AWARD - AGENCY FOR CULTURAL AFFAIRS

ART REWARD BLOSSOM

The Art Award is a system established by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1950 to honour individuals who have achieved outstanding performance or opened up new frontiers in various fields of art. This year, 19 people received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, and 11 people received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Newcomer Award.

In the theater category, Kabuki actor Kikunosuke Onoe and actor Yasunori Danda received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award. Onoe was recognized for his achievements in "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" and other works, while Danda was recognized for his achievements in "Death of a Salesman" and other works.

In the film category, special effects director Katsuro Onoue received the award for his work in "Shin Ultraman" and other works, while costume designer Masae Miyamoto received the award for her work in " Kingdom 2: To Distant Lands" and other works.

In the media arts category, animation director Makoto Shinkai received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for his work in the film "Suzume no Tojimari."

Meanwhile, in the newcomer category, novelist Rie Kudan received the award for her work in the novel "Schoolgirl" in the literature category, while artist Toru Nakazaki received the award for his solo exhibition "Tohru Nakazaki: Fiction Traveler" and other works in the art category. In the popular entertainment category, the comedy group Tokyo 03 (Lizuka Satoshi, Kakuta Akihiro, and Toyomoto Akira) received the award for their work in "Yana Kakukan" and other works.

At the presentation ceremony, after a speech by Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Keiko Nagaoka, Danda spoke on behalf of the award recipients, saying "I am proud to have received this award and I will continue to tackle each and every job that comes before me."

Kudan expressed her gratitude to those involved in the selection process and those who gave her the opportunity to present her work, saying "I am deeply honored to receive this prestigious award."

芸術選奨 - 文化庁

芸術選奨贈呈式 芸術選奨は、芸術各分野で優れた業績を挙げた人、新 生面を開いた人を文化庁が昭和 25 年から毎年度、顕 彰している制度。今年度は文部科学大臣賞を 19 人、 文部科学大臣新人賞を 11 人が受賞した。 11 部門のうち、演劇部門では、歌舞伎俳優の尾上菊 之助さんと俳優の段田安則さんが大臣賞を受賞。尾上 さんは「義経千本桜」ほかの成果、段田さんは「セー ルスマンの死」ほかの成果が授賞対象となった。 映画部門では、特撮監督の尾上克郎さんが「シン・ウ ルトラマン」ほかの成果で、衣装デザイナーの宮本ま さ江さんが「キングダム２ 遥かなる大地へ」ほかの 成果で受賞。

京山幸枝若

メディア芸術部門では、アニメーション監督の新海誠 さんが映画「すずめの戸締り」の成果により大臣賞を 受賞した。 一方新人賞は、文学部門で小説家の九段理江さんが 小説「Schoolgirl」の成果で、美術部門で美術家の 中﨑透さんが個展「中﨑透 フィクション・トラベラ ー」ほかの成果でそれぞれ受賞。大衆芸能部門では コントグループの東京０３（ゼロサン）＝飯塚悟志 さん、角田晃広さん、豊本明長さん＝さんが「ヤな 覚悟」ほかの成果で受賞した。

段田安則

贈呈式では永岡桂子文部科学大臣のあいさつに続き大 臣賞、新人賞の受賞者を代表して、段田さんが「受賞 を誇りに、また一つずつ一つずつ目の前の仕事に挑ん でいきたい」と抱負などを語った。九段さんは「大変 栄誉ある賞を頂戴しとても光栄に思っております。賞 の選考に関わる関係者の皆様、作品を発表する機会を 与えて下さった方々に改めて感謝を申し上げます」と 謝意を示した。
