Hakkaisan Brewery, based in Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture, has a diverse business that ranges from producing high-quality Japanese sake, known for their lightness and depth, to manufacturing other kinds of liquors such as shochu, “Rydeen Beer,” and amazake (sweet sake), as well as the sale of fermented foods and the management of restaurants. We spoke to Jiro Nagumo, the third generation leader and Managing Director of the company who has dedicated himself to expanding the business, on his approach and commitment as a leader to realise the philosophy of the Hakkaisan Brewery.

ART Artists from all around the world changing the contemporar y art scene are
introduced in this issue of Gen de Art. We meet with legendary French artist Martial Raysse, known as one of the founders of the group Nouveaux Réalistes (New
Realists) established in 1960, and now following his own path in art. American artist David Stanley Hewett, known for his large-scale paintings in gold leaf technique,
speaks about his inspiration from Japanese martial art history. Two Japanese creators included in this issue are realist painter Takahiro Hara and ikebana artist
Hiroki Ohara talked about the meanings behind their works. Finally, we speak with the Vice Chancellor of Britain’s most renowned art institution, the Royal College of Art, to understand how new generations of artists are brought up.
今号では、現代アートシーンを変える世界中のアーティストをご紹介。 1960 年に結成されたグルー プ「ヌーヴォー・レアリスム」 （ニュー・リアリスト）の創設者の一人として知られ、現在は独自の道を
歩んでいるフランスの伝説的アーティスト、 マルシャル・レイスに会います。金箔技法を用いた大規模
な絵画で知られるアメリカ人アーティスト、デビット・スタンリー・ヒューエットが、日本の武道史から のインスピレーションについて語ります。画家の原崇浩さんといけばなアーティストの小原宏貴さん
が、作品に込めた想いを語ります。最後に、英国で最も有名な芸術機関であるロイヤル・カレッジ・ オブ・アートの副学長に話を聞き、新しい世代のアーティストがどのように育てられているか、につい て知ることができます。

The Royal College of Art (RCA) has long earned a reputation as an internationally acclaimed college of art and design specialising in postgraduate education. Dr. Paul Thompson was appointed Vice Chancellor of the institution in 2009 – a nd si nce t hen he h a s b e en work i n g t o elevat e t he programs offered by the college to a whole new level. He has transformed the RCA’s academic vision, introducing faculty members with expertise in STEM subjects, such as computer science and robotics. Thanks to Dr. Thompson, new programs in Environmental Architecture and City Design have been added to the School of Architecture’s curriculum at the RCA.

In his conversation with Gen de Art, the RCA Vice Chancellor discussed the institution’s strengths in today’s increasingly competitive art world, emerging trends in arts education, as well as the future role of technology in various cultural practices.

世界的に高い評価を受ける、修士・博士号教育に特化した美 術系大学院大学、ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート（RCA）。 副学長であるポール・トンプソン博士は 2009 年の就任以 来、RCA の提供プログラムを全くもって新しいレベルに引き 上げました。コンピューターサイエンスやロボット工学など STEM 教育（科学・技術・工学・数学）を専門とする教員を 採用し、RCA のビジョンに革命を起こしてきました。また、 彼の尽力により、環境建築と都市デザインの新プログラムが 建築学部のカリキュラムに追加されました。 トンプソン副学長は今回、Gen de Art との対談で、競争が 激しさを増す美術界における RCA の強み、美術教育の新た なトレンド、さまざまな文化表現に対し、テクノロジーが今 後果たす役割について語ってくれました。

Born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1988. Artist and fifth generation Iemoto (the headmaster of a School of Ikebana) of the Ohara School of Ikebana, known as one of the three major schools of ikebana in Japan. Hiroki Ohara is committed to popularising ikebana and exploring artistic expression. We speak to him about ikebana’s unique methods of expression and how they resonate with and appeal to contemporary sensibilities. 1988 年兵庫県神戸市生まれ。日本三大流派 のひとつとして知られるいけばな小原流の五 世家元にして芸術家。いけばなの普及と、芸 術的表現の探求に力を注ぐ小原宏貴さんに、 現代の感性にも響くいけばな固有の表現法 と、その魅力について伺いました。

Hidden in the depths of a quiet part of Hokkaido, Zaborin is a contemporary Japanese inn that captures the spirit of the ryokan experience.
