As the end of the year approaches, Vivaldi's symphony welcomes its fourth magnificent chapter. The year 2023, like dancing musical notes, converges into a symphony of life. By the window of the Nobel Prize Museum, hexagonal crystal snowflakes glide across the sky, gently landing, guiding thoughts to traverse time and trace the imprints in the river of time.

WINTER - Days in Florida experiencing the fusion of Latin culture and sunshine. The Art Basel Miami Beach showcases the diversity of art. Attending the Nobel ceremony at Stockholm City Hall, witnessing breakthroughs in science, and engaging in dialogue with the truths of nature.

SPRING - The fertile lands of Burgundy witness nature's revival and vitality. Unique interpretations of nature are received from Madame Leroy. A chance encounter with Mozart's musical soul on the streets of Vienna, and a concert in the Golden Hall that resonates with the soul.

These imprints, like the intertwining history of the The Metropolitan Museum of Ar t , resemble a midnight starr y banquet on the Seine in Paris, carrying the determination of the girl in Yoshitomo Nara's paintings and the weight of world scientif ic progress. These silent imprints remind us to cherish the important moments in life, making the passage of time eternal.

SUMMER - The breathtaking scenery of the Alps presents a heavenly touch. The limitless possibilities of art at Art Basel leave one in awe.

Returning to Japan, the gentle strength of Mount Fuji is within reach, and the treasures of Asian art are explored in the Modern Art Museums.

年末に近づくにつれて、ヴィヴァルディの楽章が華やかな第四の季節 を迎えます。2023 年の全ての瞬間が躍動する音符のように集まり、 生命の交響曲を奏でます。ノーベル博物館の窓辺から、六角形の雪の 結晶が空に舞い、静かに地面に落ちる様子を眺めていると、思考が時 空を超えて遡り、2023 年の始まりから一つひとつの出来事が蘇って くるようです。 春 - ブルゴーニュの豊かな土地は、自然の再生と活力に導かれ、ミュー ズ・ビルシュから自然に対する独特な解釈を享受します。ウィーンの街 角では、モーツァルトの音楽の本質に出会い、ゴールデンホールでのコ ンサートは心と音楽を共鳴させます。 夏 - アルプスの壮大な景色は、天国のような世界を描き出し、アート・ バーゼルでは、芸術の無限の可能性に驚かされます。日本では、雄大な 富士山から手に取るような力強さを感じ、現代美術館では光り輝くアジ アの芸術を探求します。 秋 - イタリアでバローロの深みと熱意を味わい、ミラノ・ファッション ウィークではデザイナーたちの創造性に酔いしれます。シャンゼリゼ通

Professor Claudia Goldin's R e s e a r c h in Gender Economics

Professor Claudia Goldin of Harvard University, a renowned economic historian, garnered global attention this year by winning the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Her award, a tribute to her influential work on women’s roles in labor markets, highlighted the significance of her research in understanding gender economics.

Goldin’s academic journey began with a deep interest in U.S. economic history, focusing initially on the era of American slavery and the Civil War. Her path took a significant turn when she collaborated with economic historian Robert Fogel, her mentor and 1993 Nobel laureate, to establish the Development of the American Economy group at the National Bureau of Economic Research. It was here that Goldin found her true calling: unraveling the history and economics of women in the labor force. This decision led to her groundbreaking book, "Understanding the Gender Gap," a cornerstone in economic literature addressing the complex dynamics of gender in the labor market.

The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences is more than just an honor for Goldin; it symbolizes the broad appreciation and relevance of her work.

In her own words, the award has magnified the recognition of her work, making her a figure of inspiration for many who see her achievements as reflective of broader struggles for gender equality in economics. This accolade is not just about individual recognition but about highlighting an issue that impacts societies globally.

Goldin’s research has significantly shaped our understanding of the gender wage gap and the patterns of women’s participation in the labor market. Her findings, such as the concept of “greedy jobs” and the economic impact of caregiving roles, have profound societal implications. Her work demonstrates that differences in pay and labor force participation are rooted not in biological differences but in societal structures, including the division of unpaid caregiving responsibilities and systemic labor market inflexibilities.

Beyond her research, Goldin’s role as an educator and mentor at Harvard University has been instrumental in shaping new generations of economists. Her dedication to her students and her passion for economic history and gender studies continue to inspire and guide future research in the field.

As Goldin continues her research, she remains focused on the evolving nature of gender dynamics in the labor market. Her work continues to inspire discussions and policies aimed at promoting greater gender equality, and her insights are vital for understanding the complex interplay between economics, gender, family, and societal norms.

Goldin's statement at the Nobel Prize ceremony on December 10th, 2023, was striking: “Women are now at the center of the world’s economies.”

This declaration not only captures the essence of her research but also highlights her role as a leading figure in the field of economic history, continually shaping our understanding of gender dynamics in economics.

Yoshitomo Nara: The Beginning Place A Solo Exhibition Tracing the Creative Journey

創作の軌跡をたどる個展「奈良美智 : The Beginning Place ここから」

From 14th October 2023 to 25th February 2024, a solo exhibition of Yoshitomo Nara is being held at the Aomori Museum of Art. This is the first solo exhibition at the museum in about 10 years. Titled " Yoshitomo Nara: The Beginning Place," the exhibition approaches the origins of Nara's sensibilities and his journey as an artist starting from Aomori Prefecture. At a press conference held prior to the exhibition, Nara spoke about the changes he experienced after the Great East Japan Earthquake and his intentions for the exhibition.

2023 年 10 月 14 日から 2024 年 2 月 25 日にかけて、青森県立美術館で奈良美智 ( な らよしとも ) 氏の個展が開かれます。同館での個展は、約 10 年ぶり。「奈良美智 : The Beginning Place ここから」と題し、青森県からはじまった奈良氏のアーティストとし ての歩みと、その感性の起源へと迫ります。開催に先立って開かれた記者会見で、東日 本大震災を経て奈良氏自身に生じた変化や、展示に込めた思いなどが語られました。

Experiencing the World of YOSHITOMO NARA through Five Themes 5 つのテーマで味わう、奈良美智の世界

The theme of " Yoshitomo Nara: The Beginning Place" is to explore the "single trunk" leading to the origins of Nara's creativity.

Approximately 200 works, including recent ones after the turning point of the Great East Japan Earthquake and masterpieces from his student days, are displayed under five themes, tracing his career spanning over 40 years. 「奈良美智 : The Beginning Place ここから」のテーマは、奈 良氏の創作の起源へと至る「一本の幹」を探すことです。活動 の転機となった東日本大震災後の近年の作品はもちろん、学生 時代の秀作も含め約 200 点が 5 つのテーマごとに展示され、 奈良氏の 40 年以上にわたる軌跡をたどることができます。

The first theme is "Home". The exhibition focuses on the motif of the house, which frequently appears in Nara's early works.

"There are really a lot of works, including old oil paintings I was too embarrassed to exhibit and works kept by friends," says Nara, highlighting many first-time public displays.

1 つ目のテーマは「家」。奈良氏の初期の作品にたびたび登場す る、家のモチーフに焦点が当てられます。「自分では恥ずかしく て展示しないような昔の油絵や、友達が保管していた作品など、 本当に作品数が多い」という奈良氏の言葉通り、初公開の作品も 多いのが見どころ。

The second theme is " Layers of Time and Space". This theme explores the importance of complex layers seen in recent works.

"Midnight Tears" (2023), used as the main visual for the poster, is a three-dimensional work where layers of paint are perceptible.

2 つ目は「積層の時空」がテーマです。近年の作品にみられる、 複雑な積層 ( レイヤー ) の重要性に迫ります。ポスターのメイン ビジュアルにも用いられている「Midnight Tears」(2023) も、 絵具の層が感じられる立体的な作品です。

"As I was drawing, it accidentally looked like tears, so I made it into tears. I paint in a way that accepts such coincidences as inevitabilities. When I can't draw one eye well, I put a band-aid over it, creating impulsively as ideas come to me."

「描いていたら偶然涙のようになったので、涙にしました。私は このような偶然を必然として受け止める描き方をしていて、片目 がうまく描けない時はそこに絆創膏を貼ったり、即興で思いつい たままに制作をしています」

POST-GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE: CLAY AND THOUGHTS OF JOURNEY

東日本大震災を経て 粘土と旅への思い

The third theme is "Journey". After the Great East Japan Earthquake, Nara traveled to confirm his roots and identity.

3 つ目のテーマは「旅」です。東日本大震災を経て、自 身のルーツやアイデンティティの地盤を確かめるように 旅をしている奈良氏。

"Recently, I've traveled to remote places in Hokkaido and Taiwan, and these trips have reminded me of my starting points," he says.

「最近では北海道、あるいは台湾の辺境と言われるよう な場所へ行って、やはり自分の出発点になっていると改 めて気付かされました」

The main focus of this chapter is new expressions, such as photography and ceramics, born from these recent travels. The encounter with ceramics, especially using clay, holds significant meaning for Nara.

そんな近年の旅から生まれた、写真や陶芸などの新たな 表現が 3 章のメイン。とくに粘土を使った陶芸との出会 いは、奈良氏にとって大きな意味を持っているようです。

"I started working with clay when I found it difficult to paint, driven by a desire to create something.

While painting, my head is full of thoughts related to production, like how to paint next or what if I fail. But with clay, it's different. It has opened my eyes to the world around me, leading me to travel."

「この頃、自分の中で絵を描くことが難しくなり、何か を作りたいという思いに駆られて粘土に触れ始めまし た。絵を描いている時は、次はどのように描くか、失敗 したらどうしようなど制作にまつわる考えで頭がいっぱ いですが、粘土は異なります。今まで見えていなかった 周りの世界にも目が行くようになり、旅に出るようにな りました」 Gen de Art Dec 2023

HOMETOWN SCENERY AS PART OF THE EXHIBITION

The fourth theme is "NO WAR". It covers the influence of rock musicians who opposed war on Nara and the messages his works send to society.

4 つ目のテーマに掲げられているのが「NO WAR」。戦争に対抗したロックミュージシャン から奈良氏が受けた影響と、同氏の作品が社会へ発信するメッセージなどを取り上げます。

The fifth theme is "The Small Community of Rock Cafe ‘33 1/3’". A rock cafe that Nara frequented and participated in creating during his high school days is recreated. This exhibition, held at the Aomori Museum of Art, offers a profound experience, showcasing Nara's "the beginning place".

"The reason for holding the exhibition exclusively here is to let visitors experience the actual scenery and atmosphere. For visitors from outside the prefecture or from abroad, the exhibition starts the moment they arrive at the station or airport."

そして 5 つ目のテーマが「ロック喫茶「33 1/3」と小さな共同体」。 奈良氏が高校時代、店舗づくりから参加して通い詰めたロック喫茶 が再現されています。まさに奈良氏の「はじまりの場所」を目の当 たりにできる展示であり、青森県立美術館で開催するからこそ味わ い深い個展です。 「展覧会をここでのみ開催する理由は、訪れた人々に実際の景色 や雰囲気を体験してもらうためです。県外や海外からの来場者に とって、展覧会は駅や空港に到着した瞬間から始まっています」

BRIDGING ART AND ECONOMICS YASUO SUGIMOTO EXPLORES THE POTENTIAL OF MUSEUMS アートと経済の架け橋 : 杉本康雄が描く美術館の可能性

Yasuo Sugimoto, having served as the president and chairman of Michinoku Bank, was appointed as the director of the Aomori Museum of Art in 2015. He has been dedicated to revitalizing the region through the comprehensive promotion of art, hosting concerts and plays at the museum. Since 2020, a collaboration project involving five art museums within the prefecture has also commenced. In this context, we spoke to Sugimoto about museum management and his thoughts as an executive on the solo exhibition of Yoshitomo Nara, deeply connected to the museum. みちのく銀行頭取・会長を経て、2015 年に青森県立美術館の館長に就任した杉本康雄 氏。美術館でコンサートや演劇を催し、総合的なアートの発信を通して地域活性化に尽 力しています。2020 年からは、県内 5 つの美術館による連携プロジェクトもスタート。 そんな杉本氏へ美術館経営について伺うとともに、同館と縁の深い奈良美智氏の個展開 催にあたり、経営者としての思いを語っていただきました。

FROM BANKER TO MUSEUM DIRECTOR Sugimoto was appointed Director by the former Governor of Aomori Prefecture, Shingo Mimura, in 2015, leveraging his experience from the private sector and banking. He always perceived the Aomori Museum of Art as a special institution.

“I was impressed by the museum's exhibition spaces, which feature a white cube and are inspired by the excavation site of the Sannai-Maruyama ruins and combined with earthen walls. The design by Jun Aoki is magnificent, and the architecture alone is a delight to behold.”

Despite initial apprehensions about shifting from banking to museum management, Sugimoto progressed by consulting with his staff. He was thoughtful about the museum's role and position in the industry.

"I had the idea from the beginning that I must create a new direction and goals for the Aomori Museum of Art, based on my experiences."

銀行家として 50 年、 美術館館長への転身 2015 年、三村申吾前青森県知事に「民間の会社で培った経験、銀行で の経験を生かして美術館のマネジメントをしてほしい」と館長に任命さ れた杉本氏。当時から、青森県立美術館は特別な美術館だという印象を 持っていたそうです。 「三内丸山遺跡の発掘現場に着想を得た、ホワイトキューブと土壁が組 み合わさった展示空間を擁する美術館ですので、本当に素晴らしい美術 館だという印象を抱いていました。青木淳氏の設計が素晴らしく、建築 だけ見ていても楽しい」 銀行業界から美術館の経営へと舵を切ることへの不安はあったものの、 周囲のスタッフと相談しながら仕事を進めたと就任当初を振り返りま す。杉本氏は当時から、美術館に求められるものや業界での立ち位置に ついて思いをはせていました。 「青森県立美術館として進むべき方向や目標を、私の経験を通じて新た に創り上げなければならないという考えが、就任当初からありました」

The Museum as a Gateway to the Region Sugimoto began managing the museum with a vision for its future.

His extensive network from his banking career was instrumental in setting goals and identifying necessary actions.

"My vast network from my banking days has been my greatest asset, allowing me to discuss various aspects of art and Aomori Prefecture's future role in art and education with people from different fields."

His interactions led to the idea of collaborating with five museums in Aomori Prefecture, including the Aomori Museum of Art, Towada Art Center, Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art, Hachinohe Art Museum, and Aomori Public University of Art and Design in Aomori. This collaboration, known as the 'AOMORI GOKAN project,' was initiated in 2020 to promote the region through art using these institutions.

In April 2024, the 'AOMORI GOKAN Art Fest 2024' will feature exhibitions and performances centering around these five museums. Sugimoto hopes that this new challenge, breaking the boundaries between museums, will help invigorate the entire Aomori Prefecture through art.

"I hope that our steady new challenges will strengthen us, bringing vitality to children and the entire region."

地域を知ってもらう窓口としての美術館 青森県立美術館の将来を見据え、経営をスタートさせた杉本 氏。目標を設定し、やるべきことを見出す一助となったのは、 銀行業界で築いてきた人脈でした。 「銀行時代に築いた幅広い人的ネットワークを活用して、様々 な分野の方とアートに関する話や今後の青森県のアートがある べき姿、教育での立ち位置などを話し合えることが、私の一番 の財産だと思っています」 大勢の人と言葉を交わすなかで、杉本氏がたどり着いたのは 「5 つの美術館と連携をして何かをしよう」というアイディ ア。青森県には青森県立美術館のほかに、十和田市現代美術館 と弘前れんが倉庫美術館、八戸市美術館、そして青森公立大学 国際芸術センター青森があります。5 館が連携しながら、アー トを窓口として地域を知ってもらおうと 2020 年に「AOMORI GOKAN 5 館連携プロジェクト」を立ち上げました。 2024 年 4 月には、5 館を中心に展覧会やパフォーマンスが行 われる「AOMORI GOKAN アートフェス 2024」の開催が決定 しています。「アートが県全体の活性化につなげられたらいい」 と言う杉本氏の、美術館同士の枠を取り払った新たな挑戦です。 「地道に少しずつ新たな挑戦をし続けることで、力をつけて、 子供たちや地域全体が活気づけばいいなと考えています」

Thinking with the Left Brain, Feeling with the Right: Leveraging Banking Experience Even facing unfamiliar tasks as a museum director, Sugimoto remains enthusiastic, crediting his curiosity for his passion.

"I'm experiencing many new things in the art world, which was unknown to me. Working with people I had never encountered before is thrilling," he says.

His ability to engage fearlessly with new challenges, while retaining his banking mindset, is a unique strength.

"Previously, my work was data-driven, but the art and museum world is different. It's about feeling with the right brain and creating through sensibility."

Exploring YOSHITOMO NARA's Origins in the Winters of Aomori From October 14, 2023, to February 25, 2024, the museum will host "Yoshitomo Nara: The Beginning Place," a solo exhibition by the Aomori-born contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara.

The museum houses several of Nara's works, including "Aomori Dog" and "Miss Forest," with over 170 pieces in its collection. Sugimoto recalls Nara's desire to hold a solo exhibition during the winter in Aomori.

"This exhibition could only happen in Aomori. It's important for visitors to see Aomori's snowy winter, Nara's starting point. He wants people to understand the origins of his work through this exhibition," he notes.

Sugimoto also recommends visiting Aomori in winter to experience Nara's work. "His creative journey started with the pristine white of winter snow, which has been the birthplace of many of his works. The journey of the Fondation Louis Vuitton began with Bernard Arnault's deep-seated passion for the arts, which resonated strongly in his collaboration with Jean-Paul Claverie, a notable figure in French cultural policy and advisor to Bernard Arnault.

Their vision went beyond the traditional museum concept, aiming to establish a vibrant cultural center that reflects the dynamic and ever-changing world of art. Frank Gehry's architectural prowess was central to this vision. His innovative design approach led to the creation of a structure that not only harmonizes with its natural surroundings but also stands as a symbol of architectural innovation. A Platform for Artistic Magnitude and Diversity Driven by the French notion of 'Mécénat,' the group's two-decade-long involvement in culture, education, and humanitarian projects paved the way for establishing the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The idea for the Fondation was initially conceived by Arnault and Claverie.

Claverie highlighted, "It's an institution with a dedicated mission. The name, chosen by Mr. Arnault, reflects Louis Vuitton's strong artistic associations."

The Fondation Louis Vuitton centers on modern and contemporary art, aiming to showcase and nurture art from regions like France, the United States, and Asia. Collaborating with Frank Gehry, architect of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, was key. Gehry was tasked by Arnault to create a Parisian structure in Bois de Boulogne that would physically represent the foundation’s artistic commitment—a structure that today stands as a vibrant sculpture of creativity.

Since opening, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has held numerous major exhibitions every year - attracting over a million visitors worldwide in 2022 - solidifying its status as a global art institution.

The Mark Rothko Retrospective: A Journey Through Abstract Expressionism The Fondation's dedication to showcasing groundbreaking art is currently highlighted by its extensive Mark Rothko exhibition, running from October 18, 2023, to April 2, 2024. This exhibition, the first comprehensive retrospective in France dedicated to Mark Rothko since 1999, brings together approximately 115 works from the most significant international collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Tate in London, and the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., as well as from private collections, including the artist's family.

Developed over five years in collaboration with Rothko's son, Christopher Rothko, the exhibition offers an in-depth exploration of Rothko's oeuvre. Visitors have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Rothko's distinctive use of color and form, experiencing an emotional journey through his artistic evolution. The miracle of the Calibre 89 When Philippe Stern resolved, in the late 1970s, to meet the existential challenge of quartz watches by making the world’s most complicated mechanical watch, the result was the legendary Calibre 89.

Created to celebrate Patek Philippe’s 150th anniversary, the model secured the company’s future and helped to resurrect the mechanical watch. The final display of Mr. Stern’s tour is the prototype of this remarkable piece. Comprising 1,728 parts and incorporating 33 complications, the Calibre 89 is a power- ful statement of the watchmaker’s art – an art that has been refined over centuries and not least by Patek Philippe. © Patek Philippe Museum

PRESERVING HOROLOGICAL HERITAGE The Birth of the Patek Philippe Museum

Patek Philippe has long been synonymous with horological innovation. As Dr. Friess fondly recalls, "Patek Philippe has a history of hosting exhibitions; for instance, already in the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, where they curated a landmark exhibition on watches spanning from 1500 to 1800." However, it was Philippe Stern, the brand's former president, who envisioned the need for a dedicated space to honor this legacy. Dr. Friess reminisces, "And then he proposed, 'let's build a museum.'"

In the year 2000, this v ision became a rea lit y a s the museum found its home in a former Patek Philippe production site in Geneva. Today, four expansive floors take visitors on a journey through the brand's evolution and the broader history of timekeeping.

Dr. Friess emphasizes a unique aspect of the museum: "Primarily, we focus on showcasing the entire history of Patek Philippe, starting from 1839. We deliberately exclude watches from the past two decades, as Mr. Stern wanted to ensure this space remained devoid of commercial intent." This approach underscores the museum's commitment to preserving the heritage and artistry of watchmaking rather than being a platform for sales.

Beyond the realm of Patek Philippe creations, the museum boasts "arguably the most extensive collection of portable timepieces dating back to the 1500s up until around 1900," as Dr. Friess proudly notes. These encompass not just Patek Philippe timepieces but historical timekeepers spanning over five centuries.

Semper Augustus The precious tulip known as the Semper Augustus was one of the rarest in history. White with deep red flames, it fetched huge prices in seventeenth­century Holland dur­ing a period of wild financial speculation known as “tulip mania.”

The second stop on our tour brings visitors to a fine watch made around 1640 in Blois, France. It is decorated with luxurious enameled bouquets including Semper Augustus tulips in full bloom, some already wilting as was typical in still life paintings of the time. This watch was one of the finest of its day. Besides its exuberant enamel paintings, it is extensively set with rubies and diamonds.

The museum isn't solely a shrine to the intricate mechanics within the watches; it also pays homage to the artistry of watch casings. Dr. Friess explains, "The Patek Philippe Museum houses what is likely the largest collection of enamel-painted watches." He underscores the historical significance of enamel painting, a craft with deep roots in Geneva for over four centuries, stating that "the watch cases are often as important as the movements themselves."

In addition to its displays, the museum serves as an educational platform where engineers, watchmakers, and designers often come to study the antique pieces. This bridge between the past and present is vital for Patek Philippe, allowing the brand to innovate while maintaining a strong connection to tradition.

During a guided tour, Dr. Friess passionately draws attention to a centerpiece he regards as the pinnacle of horological literature. "This is perhaps the most significant pocket watch ever created," he declares with fervor. Crafted for a Swedish princess, this timepiece transcends mere timekeeping; it is a magnificent work of art adorned with numerous diamonds and exquisite enamel paintings.

However, the museum's allure extends far beyond royal inspirations.

Dr. Friess redirects the spotlight to a pocket watch from the 1640s Netherlands, encapsulating a fascinating economic chapter. "During that time, they traded tulip bulbs much like modern-day stocks on Wall Street," he narrates. This tulip mania reached a fever pitch, resulting in unprecedented financial speculation. While it brought instant wealth to some, it plunged many into destitution.

Amidst the chaos, artistry thrived. The tulip, with its vibrant colors and distinctive shape, became a popular motif in paintings, symbolizing both affluence and unpredictability. Dr. Friess, eyes gleaming with enthusiasm, reveals, "And before long, these tulips found their way onto watch designs."

THE EVOLUTION FROM KEY TO CROWN IN WATCH WINDING Historically, watches depended on a "small key" for winding, and losing this key left the owner "timeless." To address this issue, various solutions were explored. The breakthrough came from Jean Adrien Philippe of Paris, who introduced the winding crown mechanism. This innovation was so revolutionary that today, "every mechanical watch... incorporates about 10 components dedicated to this crown winding mechanism." Consequently, every owner of a mechanical watch possesses "a touch of Patek Philippe."

This groundbreaking mechanism received royal recognition in 1851 when Philippe presented it to Queen Victoria at the London World Exposition. The fact that "a Queen with a crown" now owned a watch with a crown turned the Patek Philippe timepiece into a coveted accessory among the elite, ushering in a new era in horology.

PATEK PHILIPPE'S STANCE IN THE QUARTZ ERA The 1960s brought forth significant challenges with the advent of the quartz revolution. Japanese innovations posed a serious threat to Switzerland’s esteemed watch industry, leading to the closure of many traditional watchmaking firms.

I n t h e m i d s t o f t h i s u p h eava l , P h i l i p S te r n to o k a decisive stance. Firmly bidding "farewell to all electronic timekeepers," he steered the brand back towards the traditional artistry of mechanical watches. This visionary move led to a remarkable expansion of the brand's workforce, from 500 to an astonishing 3,000 employees today.

To reaffirm their unwavering commitment to horological excellence, Patek Philippe introduced the Calibre 89. This masterpiece, featuring 33 complications, is celebrated as the world's most intricate timekeeper. A limited edition, only five of these 1.5-kilogram, 1,700-part wonders were ever produced.

As one delves deeper into the museum, it becomes evident that each timepiece, every cog, and each radiant gemstone encapsulate a unique story – narratives that Dr. Peter Friess ardently strives to share with the world.

This exquisite pendant watch is a testament to the skills of watchmakers, goldsmiths, jewelers, and enamelers. Encased in slender gold, it's fully adorned with blue enamel. Its gold surface features elaborate high-relief chasing, followed by enameling using the 'émaillage Sur ronde-posse d’or' technique. The design incorporates female figures inspired by Abraham Bosse's (1604-1676) engravings, 'The Cardinal Virtues.'

Situated in the heart of Paris, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain has long been a bastion of artistic innovation and creativity. Established in 1984, it stands as the oldest fondation of its kind in France. Over the years, the fondation has cultivated a reputation for its dedication to interdisciplinary art forms, including design, architecture, visual art, sound art, and even performance.

It prides itself on being an experimental space, far removed from market-oriented approaches, making it a unique institution both in Europe and around the globe.

In an interview with Chris Dercon, the general director of the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, during the Paris+ par Art Basel 2023, he provided insights into the fondation's exciting plans for the future.

Dercon mentioned the upcoming celebration of Cartier's 50th anniversary in Japan, which has led to a collaboration with the Fondation Cartier to showcase a part of their Japanese holdings.

A LOOK AT THE VENUE

This significant milestone for Cartier in Japan coincides with the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain's own 40th anniversary since its inception in 1984. To mark this occasion, the fondation is embarking on a momentous move to a new location near the Louvre in the Rue de Rivoli. Designed by renowned architect Jean Nouvel, the new building will not only be a testament to contemporary architectural excellence but also provide the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain with its first-ever opportunity to showcase its vast and diverse collections to the public.

Dercon expressed his pride in the fondation's role a s a u n i qu e a n d ex p e r i m e nta l i n s t i t u t i o n t h a t transcends market-driven trends. Galeries Émergentes

Galeries Émergentes, a segment focusing on rising art galleries, showcased 14 unique solo exhibits at Paris+ par Art Basel. This section included presentations from diverse galleries such as Bank (Shanghai), LC Queisser (Tbilisi), seventeen (London), Document (Chicago, Lisbon), and PM8 / Francisco Salas (Vigo).

This initiative was backed by groupe Galeries Lafayette. As a highlight, artist Mohamad Abdouni, under the representation of Marfa' (Beirut), was chosen by a specially selected jury to create a new artwork at the Lafayette Anticipations - Fondation Galeries Lafayette workshop. This artwork is slated for display at Lafayette Anticipations in 2024.

Additionally, Marfa' will receive a refund of its participation fee for the fair.

The jury responsible for this selection included notable figures such as Guillaume Houzé, President of Lafayette Anticipations; Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, Director of Lafayette Anticipations; Ruba Katrib, Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs at MoMA PS1; Diana Campbell Bétancourt, Artistic Director at Samdani Art Foundation and Dhaka Art Summit; and Akeem Smith, artist, fashion designer, and the 2022 laureate.

The Paris+ par Art Basel public program, open to everyone and a collaborative effort with the City of Paris and local cultural institutions, spanned the city with its extensive offerings. This year's program included three exhibitions, two major outdoor installations, and a series of informative talks and debates, all located in six renowned spots around Paris. Some of these projects are available for viewing even after the fair.

At the Jardin des Tuileries, part of the Domaine National du Louvre, there was a group exhibition in partnership with the Musée du Louvre. Curated by Annabelle Ténèze, the Director of the Louvre-Lens Museum, the exhibition titled ‘La Cinquième Saison’ (‘The Fifth Season’) showcased 25 pieces by artists of diverse generations and backgrounds, such as Alex Ayed, Claudia Comte, Nicène Kossentini, and Gaetano Pesce.

The program also introduced two new locations: The Palais d'Iéna, featuring a joint exhibition of works by Daniel Buren and Michelangelo Pistoletto, curated by art historian Matthieu Poirier and supported by Galleria Continua; and the parvis de l'Institut de France, which displayed a significant textile sculpture by Sheila Hicks, courtesy of galerie frank elbaz in cooperation with Meyer Riegger and Massimo Minini.

36th Behind the Scenes from Opening to Closing 開幕から閉幕までの舞台裏

The 36th Tokyo International Film Festival, which showcased and competed films selected from both domestic and international sources over a period of ten days, concluded successfully with a significant increase in the number of works and guests. The question arises: how were the participating works, which were based on the philosophy of "broadcasting the possibilities of cinema from Tokyo and contributing to exchanges with diverse worlds," selected and chosen?

Insights were sought from chairman Hiroyasu Ando. 国 内 外 か ら 選 び 抜 か れ た 作 品 を 10 日 間 上 映 し 競 い 合 う 東 京 国 際 映 画 祭 (Tokyo International Film Festival)。第 36 回となる今年は、作品数、ゲスト数など大幅に増え、 盛況の内に閉幕しました。「東京から映画の可能性を発信し、多様な世界との交流に貢献す る」という理念に基づいた参加作品は、どの様に選び、選ばれたのでしょうか。安藤裕康チ ェアマンに伺いました。

Born in 1944, Ando, a former diplomat and secretary to the Prime Minister, became the President of the Japan Foundation from 2011 to 2020 and was appointed chairman of the 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival in 2019. "Last year's 104 international guests increased to 2,000 this year, and the number of screened films also increased by 25%. It is crucial for the film festival to screen a large number of quality works. It's also important to create a space where people from inside and outside the country can gather, exchange opinions, and inspire each other in filmmaking. Three years ago, we established an exchange lounge for international exchanges. It's difficult for us, with our shorter history, to become like European film festivals such as Venice (started in 1932), Cannes (1946), or Berlin (1951), with Tokyo starting in 1985. However, we want to focus more energy on building closer relationships with neighboring countries like China, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. Japan signed a Film Co-production Agreement with China in 2018, and we want to use it as a stepping stone for joint productions among Asian countries."

1944 年生まれ。外交官、内閣総理大臣秘書官などを経て、2011 年から 2020 年は国際交流 基金理事長、2019 年の第 32 回東京国際映画祭でチェアマンに就任しました。 「昨年は 104 人だった海外からのゲストが今年は 2000 人に上り、上映作品数も 25％増え ました。映画祭にとって良質な作品を数多く上映する事は大変重要です。そして国内外の人々 が集い意見を交換し、映画製作について互いに刺激を与え合う場が必要だと考えています。そ こで 3 年前から国際交流のための交流ラウンジを設けました。ベネツィア国際映画祭が始まっ たのは 1932 年、カンヌ国際映画祭は 1946 年、ベルリン国際映画祭は 1951 年、東京国際 映画祭は 1985 年。歴史の浅い私達がヨーロッパの映画祭の様な存在になるのは難しいでしょ う。でもまずは、中国、韓国、タイ、ベトナムといった近隣諸国と緊密な関係を築く事に、も っとエネルギーを注ぎたいのです。日本は 2018 年に中国と映画共同製作協定を結びましたの で、アジア諸国間の共同製作への足がかりとして推進して行きたいと思っています」

“Art is a Reflection of What is Happening in the World” Mori Art Museum on the Forefront of Climate Crisis The Mori Art Museum in Tokyo is a contemporary art institution that has long been valued internationally for its innovative approaches to showcase the key artists of today, as well as its active engagement in dialogue with the public on the most important topics of our time, including politics, environment and intercultural dialogue. Mami Kataoka, who was the chief curator at the museum since its opening in 2003 and took over the director’s post in 2020, consistently proves her commitment to making the institution a well-recognised leader in the field of contemporary art’s curatorial work.

In her interview, Kataoka spoke to Gen de Art about her own journey as a curator, vision for the museum’s future and the new ground-breaking exhibition titled Our Ecology: Toward a Planetary Living.

「アートは世界の現状を映し出す鏡」 気候変動の最前線を行く森美術館 東京・六本木に位置する森美術館は、革新的な手法で、現代美術において鍵となるアーティスト たちを紹介し、今日避けては通れない政治、環境、異文化コミュニケーションなどの話題につい ても、積極的に市民と対話を重ねてきた現代美術機関として国際的に高く評価されています。 2003 年から同館で勤務を開始し、2020 年に館長に就任した片岡真実氏は、同館を現代美術の キュレーション分野における先導役とすべく、常に力を尽くしています。 今回、片岡氏は、キュレーターとしての彼女自身の歩み、思い描く美術館の未来像、そして 「私たちのエコロジー：地球という惑星を生きるために（Our Ecology: Toward a Planetary Living）」と題した画期的な展覧会について「Gen de Art」に語ってくれました。

Revolutionising Curatorial Tradition MAMI KATAOKA

In the early 2000s, when contemporary art was not yet as popular among the general public as it is today, the opening of the Mori Art Museum created a small revolution in the artistic world.

Its ambitious inaugural show called Happiness co-curated by museum’s first director David Elliott, showcasing over 250 works by over 180 artists, focused on the idea of the true meaning of happiness is. Kataoka recalls that the idea back then was mixing “old and new, East and West together” to celebrate the emerging global movement of the time.

“One of the key roles the Mori Art Museum played in the last 20 years was to bring the idea of contemporary art to a larger public which, I think, we did successfully”, – she recalls.

L ater on, the museum, under the careful guidance of Kataoka, continued to transcend geographical borders, creating shows dedicated to contemporary art from China, African countries and other cultural contexts, and giving voice to artists from all around the globe.

2000 年代初頭、現代美術が今ほど一般大衆の間に普及していなかっ た頃、森美術館の開館は美術界に小さな革命をもたらしました。その 野心的な開館記念展「ハピネス：アートにみる幸福への鍵 モネ、若沖、 そしてジェフ・クーンズへ」は、初代館長デヴィッド・エリオットと ゲスト・キュレーターのピエール・ルイジ・タッツィが共同企画した もので、180 名余りのアーティストによる約 250 点の作品を展示し、 本当の「幸福」の意味について考えるものでした。片岡氏は、当時の 着想は「古いものと新しいもの、東洋と西洋を一緒に」並べて展示す ることであり、その時代に台頭しつつあった世界的な動きを讃えるも のだったと回想します。 「森美術館はこの 20 年の間、現代美術の発想をより多くの人々に知 ってもらうという役割を担っていました。そして、それはある程度成 功したと思っています」と振り返りました。 その後も、同館は国境を越えて中国、インド、東南アジア、中東、ア フリカ諸国など、異なる文化的背景を持つ国々の現代美術に光を当て た展覧会を開催し続け、片岡氏のきめ細かい助言の下、世界中のアー ティストの声を届けています。

Power of Art to Change the World According to Kataoka’s philosophy, contemporary art is not simply about the art that is created in modern times, but about dialogue of history and modernity, an act of conversation between older works and newer works. In line with this vision, Happiness featured classical Japanese art alongside Western works of Impressionism and Romanticism eras, as well as contemporary works from around the world.

Explaining why such an approach was adopted by the Mori Art Museum, the director says that “art is a reflection of what is happening in the world, so it was only natural for us to look at this complex issue through the lens of contemporary artists and their practices”.

In the context of contemporary times, Kataoka notes that the looming climate crisis is exactly one of such unavoidable events that can be seen as “beyond contemporary art”. As the Mori Art Museum places an emphasis on its learning programs at the famous World Classroom , Kataoka sees climate change as an important topic of discussion with learners, especially the ones who represent younger generations.

“I think it’s a moment for the general public to start being aware of the situation and try to find out if there is anything we can do”, – she concludes.

“It was only obvious that we needed to do something relevant to this topic [of climate change]. Then, actually, the idea of an exhibition centred around the global warming crisis started to come together over 10 years ago in different places”, – Kataoka explains.

This was how Our Ecology: Toward a Planetary Living exhibition was born.

Despite considering different approaches – from provocative to poetic – to engage the visitors, the curators at the Mori Art Museum decided to focus on the life cycles on the Earth, looking at how different forms of life coexisted together on our planet.

The exhibition, featuring over 100 works by artists from all across the globe, is divided into four chapters. The first chapter “All Is Connected” aims to raise awareness of the interconnectedness of different ecosystems that exist on Earth. The second chapter “Return to Earth” focuses on the Japanese art of the 1950s-1980s that sheds light on the increasing pollution as a result of the country’s economic growth at the time, which, according to Kataoka, is the most politically engaged part of the exhibition. Then, the third chapter “The Great Acceleration” looks at the human exploitation of the Earth’s resources. Finally, the last chapter, “The Future Is Within Us”, sends a hopeful message – that finding a

solution is still possible and, by coming together as humanity, we can make climate change a thing of the past.

In conclusion, Mami Kataoka shares her insight from the exhibition: “You can live without thinking and you can just enjoy your life. But is it enough for us to contribute to the planet? That kind of higher awareness for what you do and how you live is something that the art can bring to you.” With this inspiring message, we can only imagine what the true impact of the new art show at the Mori Art Museum can bring. As the art world joins the important discussions of the climate crisis, led by the likes of Kataoka, hope begins to glimmer.

先駆的な行動 「このテーマ（気候変動）に関連した行動を何か実践しなければな らないことは明らかでした。そして、実は 10 年以上前から、地球温 暖化や環境危機をテーマにした展覧会の構想が、様々な場所でまと まり始めたのです」と片岡氏は説明します。 こうして生まれたのが「私たちのエコロジー：地球という惑星を生 きるために（Our Ecology: Toward a Planetary Living）」展でし た。当初、森美術館のキュレーターであるマーティン・ゲルマン氏 と椿玲子氏は、来場者を惹きつけるために、挑発的なものから詩的 なものまで、様々なアプローチを検討しましたが、最終的に地球の ライフサイクルに眼差しを向け、地球上の異なる形態の生命体がど のように共存しているかを見つめることにしました。 世界中のアーティストによる 100 点以上の作品が紹介される本展 は、4 つの章に分けられています。第 1 章「全ては繋がっている （All Is Connected）」では、地球上に存在する様々な生態系が 相互に関係していることに目を向けてもらうことを目的としていま す。第 2 章「土に還る（Return to Earth）」では、バート・ウィ ンザー = タマキ氏をゲストに迎え、1950 年代から 1980 年代の 日本美術に着目し、当時の経済成長に伴う公害の増加に光を当てて います。片岡氏は、この章がこの展覧会の中で最も政治的に関与し たものであると言います。そして、第 3 章「大いなる加速（The Great Acceleration）」では、人類による地球資源の搾取に視点を 合わせます。そして最後の章である「未来は私たちの中にある（The Future Is Within Us）」では、なんとか解決策を見つけるために、 その土地に住む人々の知恵から最先端の技術まで広く学び、様々な 方法を「試みる」ことが何よりも大切なのだ、という希望に満ちた メッセージを送っています。 最後に、片岡真実氏は展覧会から得た洞察をこう語ります。「何も 考えずに生きて、ただ人生を楽しむことはできます。しかし、地球 への貢献はそれで十分でしょうか？自分に何ができるのか、どう生 きるべきなのか、そのような意識の高まりもまた、アートがもたら してくれるものなのです」

Architect Kengo Kuma From Uniformity in Industrialisation to Celebrating Diversity in Material 工業化の画一性から物質を生かす多様性へ

Philosophy Kengo Kuma, a renowned architect and a special and honorary professor at the University of Tokyo, continues to create numerous exceptional works, including the main stadium for the Tokyo Olympics, the "Japan National Stadium".

His accolades for the "Nakagawa-machi Bato Hiroshige Museum of Art" include the Murano Togo Prize among others, and for the "Nezu Museum", the Mainichi Art Award among others. In 2021, he was also named one of the "100 Most Influential People" by the American magazine TIME. Kuma's approach is to enjoy working in new places and to continually seek change. He advocates a shift from the uniformity of industrial society to celebrating the essence of materials. Recently, his work in Albania, amidst its natural landscapes, has left a lasting impression. "I was able to design architecture inspired by the relationship between stone and forest in Albania's nature. The unique order and relationships found in nature provide significant clues," he shares.

国境を越え、世界中でこれまでに 500 以上ものプロジェクトを手 掛けている隈氏は、これまでに仕事をしたことがない国からの依 頼を積極的に引き受けるようにしています。それは、「知らない ところとの出会いが自分のクリエィティビティを持続させる上で も重要だし、僕の建築を違う領域に持って行ってくれると思って います」という理由から来ています。 自分のスタイルを頑なに守り、自分で自分をコピーするかのよう な建築家もいますが、隈氏の信念は異なります。「絶えず自分が 変わっていきたい、変化していきたい。変化というのは、時代が 変わることに応じての変化もあるし、造る場所が変わることによ って僕の変化を後押ししてくれることもあります」 現在、およそ 40 の国々で同時に仕事を進行している隈氏。「旅 をしながら仕事をすることが自分の建築にとって一番重要だと思 います。新しい知らない場所での仕事を一番楽しみにしています」 と語ります。 有名な建築家が設計した歴史的な建物以上に、実際の街の環境や 風景などからヒントをもらうことが多いと言います。 最 近 で は、 ア ル バ ニ ア の 自 然 が 残 る 場 所 で の 仕 事 が 印 象 に 残 っ て い る そ う で す。「 ア ル バ ニ ア の 自 然 の 中 の 石 と 森 の 関 係 か ら ヒ ン ト を も ら い、 建 築 を 造 る こ と が で き ま し た。 自 然 の 中 に あ る、 自 然 が 持 つ 独 特 の 秩 序 や 関 係 性 が 大 き な ヒントを与えてくれます」

Kuma speaks about a return to nature and the cycles within nature that he felt in Albania, asserting that traditional Japanese architecture is inherently a part of an ecosystem centred around forests. However, the introduction of concrete and steel in the 20th century changed this relationship. "Concrete and steel are fundamentally unrelated to the ecosystem, being brought in from big cities, factories, and overseas, and I believe they have completely destroyed Japan's ecosystem. It's crucial to reconsider whether we can integrate buildings and cities back into the ecosystem. Therefore, I strive to use local materials and work with local people as much as possible," he states.

Kuma also advocates re-evaluating the materials used in construction.

"Materials are key to our designs. Concrete and steel have standardized and impoverished architecture. What we should aim for is reviving various materials in architecture once again," he explains. He further mentions, "Behind materials, there are hidden aspects such as the history, traditions, and climate of the place. I'm most interested in bringing out these aspects through materials". Rather than treating materials as mere surfaces, Kuma delves into their essence, requiring a keen attention to detail. "My details are often said to be too simple, but by being overly simple, I aim to bring out the essence of the material," he says.

Light is also something he values greatly. "From the early stages of design, I think about how natural light enters the building, what kind of light can be placed, and what the conditions are during the day and night," he mentions.

While some architects propose lighting at the end of the design process, Kuma does the opposite. "Materials can appear completely different due to light.

Materials and light are deeply interconnected," he asserts.

Transformation of the Architect's Role

Kuma feels that the role of the architect is changing.

"In the 20th century, architects primarily worked within industrialised societies to quickly create large structures of concrete and steel and give form to such large buildings," he reflects. Architects, once seen as artists bestowing form from above, are now envisioned in a more connective role. "In the future, standing between craftsmen and clients, facilitating dialogue, will become an architect's most important job," he predicts.

Kuma believes in playing the role of a bridge that connects users of buildings, craftsmen, and those who create materials. "If the bridge works well, the 75

relationship between architecture and society will change completely. I believe we can transition from the criticisms of concrete and steel architecture to a more friendly relationship," he explains. He also points out a change in the definition of architects post the COVID-19 pandemic.

Artificial environments created by humans, epitomised by skyscrapers, have been shown by the pandemic to impose an unhealthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally. "Our urgent task is to step out of the boxes provided by industrialised society," Kuma states. To do so, "We must take the lead ourselves. We are mindful of taking the

initiative to build small offices in beautiful rural areas and start working there," he shares.

Offices are being built in Hokkaido, Okinawa, and soon in Seoul, South Korea. Kuma advocates building together with various people in various places. To reclaim the global environment, he asserts that architecture and art must work together. "There is no meaning in setting boundaries between architecture and art. I want people to see architecture and art as part of the same realm, the same art," he declares.

Architecture, crafted through such unique philosophy, is indeed a supreme form of art.

建築家の仕事が今、変わりつつあると感じています。「20 世紀の建築家 は、基本的に工業化社会の中でコンクリートと鉄で大きな建築を早く造 る、コンクリートと鉄の大きな建築に形を与える、ということが仕事で した」 上の立場から形を与える、上位にいる芸術家のような立場でもあった建 築家。「これからの時代は、職人とクライアントとの間に立ち、職人と クライアントの間をつなぐような役割を果たすこと、一種の対話が建築 家の一番重要な仕事になってくると思います」 フラットに対話し、建築を使う人、職人、マテリアルを作ってくれる人 たちをつなぐブリッジのような役割を果たすことが求められると考えて います。ブリッジがうまく働けば、建築と社会との関係も全然違うもの になります。コンクリートと鉄による建築で批判されてきた歴史に代わ り、もっとフレンドリーな関係になれるという信念があります。 新型コロナウイルス禍の後、建築家の定義の変化があったとも指摘します。 人間が造ってきた人工的環境、工業化社会が造ってきた人工的環境、典 型的なものがスカイスクレイパー（超高層建築物）です。

「その中に閉じ込められた生活がいかに不健康であったか、ということ をコロナが教えてくれました。肉体的に不健康であり、精神的にも非常 にストレスの多い不健康な生活を強いられました」と語ります。 「工業化社会が用意した箱を出なければならない、ということが僕らの 緊急の課題です」そして、箱を出るために、「僕ら自身が率先しなけれ ばならない。田舎の美しい自然の中に小さいオフィスをいくつか造って そういうところで仕事を始めるように、自分たち自身が率先しようと心 掛けています」 オフィスは、北海道や沖縄に造られ、これから韓国のソウルにも造られ ます。いろいろな場所でいろいろな人たちと一緒に造っていく、という 方法を提唱しています。 地球環境全体をもう一度取り戻すために、建築とアートは一緒に働かな ければならないということもポリシーに掲げています。「建築とアート に境界を設けることは意味がない。建築とアートを一緒の領域の一緒の 芸術と見てほしいと思います」類まれなる哲学によって造られる建築は、 至高のアートでもあるのです。

Nitten Representative Director Ryohei Miyata Feeling the Pulse of Life Through Art 日展理事長・宮田亮平 : アートを通じて感じる生命の鼓動

In the dawn of Japan's modernization following the Meiji Restoration, there was a fervent aspiration to match and surpass Western arts and culture. This aspiration led to the establishment of the Bunten (Ministry of Education Art Exhibition) in 1907.

Later renamed Nitten (Japan Art Exhibition), it celebrated its 116th anniversary and a decade since its last reform this year, marked by the "10th Nitten Exhibition" at The National Art Center, Tokyo. Ryohei Miyata, who assumed the Representative Director of Nitten last May, brings a distinguished history as the president of Tokyo University of the Arts and Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, along with numerous awards in metalwork. Upholding his motto of fusing the unshakeable with the innovative, Miyata is quietly but firmly focused on the further development and enrichment of Nitten. 明治維新後の日本近代化の黎明期。芸術文化においても西洋に追い付き、追い越すことを目指して 1907 年に創設され た文展（文部省美術展覧会）。その後、名称を日展（日本美術展覧会）と変え、創設から 116 年を迎えた今年、改革か ら 10 年の節目となる「第 10 回日展」が東京・国立新美術館で開かれました。昨年 5 月に日展理事長に就任した宮田亮 平氏は、東京芸術大学学長、文化庁長官などを歴任、金工作家として数多くの賞も受賞。自らの信念でもある「ゆるぎ ないものと革新的なものの融合」をモットーに、日展のさらなる発展と充実を静かに確かに見据えています。

Raised in a Craftsman's Home in Sado

Growing up in a family of artisans in Sado, Niigata, Miyata's connection with the Nitten traces back to his hometown days. Born as the third son of the second-generation Aido Miyata, the inheritor of Niigata Prefecture's intangible cultural heritage craft technique known as "wax mold casting," he was raised in an environment steeped in the world of craftsmanship. During that time, Miyata’s father also submitted his works to the Nitten.

He vividly recalls the excitement when his father's selection was announced on NHK radio in the evening, as the day turned to night. He reminisces how the entire family, including apprentices, shared in the joy when his father exclaimed, "I made it! They called my name!"

This experience ignited Miyata’s aspiration 79

to participate in the Nitten one day, thinking, "When I enter Tokyo University of the Arts, I want to exhibit at the Nitten someday."

After enrolling at Tokyo University of the Arts, Miyata continued his creative work and research at the university's graduate school.

A significant turning point came when he was an assistant professor, he spent a year as a cultural affairs trainee abroad at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg, Germany. Among the museum's collections were Japanese swords and sword guards (tsuba), many of which had succumbed to rust over time. However, the museum staff lacked the expertise required for restoration.

At that juncture, Miyata employed traditional Japanese techniques, utilizing methods involving grated daikon radish, rice bran,

straw ash, and vegetable oil. Through these techniques, he successfully restored the items to their former glory, leaving the museum staff astounded. He recalls how their treatment of him transformed from regarding him simply as a visitor from Japan to addressing him as "Sir," reflecting their newfound respect.

This experience opened his eyes to the realization that what Japanese people considered commonplace and taken for granted were, in fact, not so common elsewhere. Upon concluding his overseas study and returning to Japan, he rekindled his appreciation for the magnificence of Japanese traditions, recognizing that such excellence could be found abundantly in various aspects of Japanese culture.

宮田理事長と日展との関わりは、故郷の新 潟・佐渡に住んでいた頃に遡ります。佐 渡に伝わる新潟県の無形文化財工芸技術 「蝋型鋳金」の継承者、2 代目宮田藍堂の 3 男として生まれ、工芸家の家庭で育って きました。「その頃、父も日展に作品を出 品していて、夕方、日も暮れ暗くなった頃 に NHK のラジオ放送で入選が放送された 時は、『受かった、名前を呼ばれた！』と いう父の声にお弟子さんも含め家族全員 がうれしかった」と当時を振り返ります。 そして、自らも「藝大（東京藝術大学 ) に 入ったら、いつかは日展に出したい」と 思うようになりました。東京藝術大学に 進んだ後、同大大学院で創作と研究を続 け、助教授の時に文化庁在外研修員として 1 年間、ドイツ・ハンブルク美術工芸博物 館に留学したことが大きな転機に。そこ

には日本の刀剣や刀のつばなどもありま したが、多くはさびていました。しかし、 博物館の職員・スタッフは修復する技術を 持っていませんでした。 その時に用いたのが日本に古くから伝わ る技術、つまり大根おろし、米ぬか、わ ら灰、菜種油を使った方法です。それら を用いて修復し見事に蘇らせると、彼ら は仰天。「それまでは日本から来たお兄 さん、というような感じの対応でしたが、 『サー（Sir、栄誉称号）』と呼ばれるよ うになりました」（宮田理事長）と接し 方が一変しました。「日本人が普通に、 当たり前に使っていたことが実はそうで はない」ことに気付かされ、また、留学 を終え帰国すると、そうした日本の素晴 らしさがどこにでもいっぱいあることを 再認識したのです。 Gen de Art Dec 2023

The Nitten, celebrating its 116th year since establishment, marked a decade of reformation with its "10th Nit ten Exhibition" (November 3rd to November 26th), featuring masterpieces across all five categories (Japanese painting, Western painting, sculpture, crafts, and calligraphy) that weave the beauty found in ever yday Japa n into t heir backgrounds. "It was a tremendous group. It felt like they were pushing me forward as I set out to Tokyo," he reminisces.

For instance, in crafts, I anticipate the creation of works that firmly embody t r a d i t i o n a l t e c h n i qu e s a n d p o s s e s s powerful materials yet are imbued with contemporary sensibilities—not confined by techniques and materials alone but allowing each creator's unique perception to fully express itself.

Regarding the future of Nitten, I seek an "absolute continuation" and the "discovery of new talent," as well as a more open Nitten.

This openness is not about adhering to a defined color or style but rather embracing new styles and works, including modern contemporary art.

After Japan opened its doors to the world, leaving behind its isolation, I aim to reconstruct the early goals of the Bunten, which aspired to catch up and surpass the

West. There's a strong belief that now is the opportune time to examine why Bunten was established and why it has continued, and I aim to propose ideas on this matter.

“With over 11,000 submissions each year and a new panel of judges annually, the thrill of continually seeking newness is immeasurable.

This is something I cherish deeply and wish to preserve.” Inherited by Miyata's vision, Nitten is sure to continue making steadfast progress in the realm of Japanese beauty.

もっと開かれた日展を目指す

歴史ある日展を継いでいくために思うこ とは、古くからの伝統のパワーと新たな エネルギーを併せ持った「ゆるぎなくあ る素晴らしさ、ゆるぎないものと革新的 なものの融合」を伝えていく、というこ と。たとえば工芸の場合、「伝統技術を しっかり持ち、素材は完璧な迫力を持ち、 しかし感性は今のもの」という作品、「技 術や素材だけにしばられるのではなく、 それぞれが持っている感性を十分に生か していく」という作品の創造を期待して います。

日展の未来については、「絶対的な継続」 と「新人発掘」、そして「より開かれた 日展、こういうカラーが日展である、と いうのではなく、もっと開かれた新しい 現代美術も含めた様式や作品」を求めま す。閉ざされた島国の内なる眼を世界へ 向け始めた開国後の日本。西洋に追い付 き追い越せ、という目標を掲げていた初 期の文展の考え方を再構築しようと考え ています。「なぜ文展ができたのか、な ぜこれまで続いてきたのか、それを検証 するいい時期に来ているのでは」という

Komatsu has also garnered international acclaim for her live painting performances. ENCOUNTERS WITH 'DIVINE SPIRITS' IN NATURE From a young age, Komatsu loved painting, often visiting art museums with her mother and drawing animals. “As a child who loved feeling the energy of nature, I was inspired to paint the mythical spirits I encountered through this connection with the natural world,” she reflects.

She recalls her childhood, surrounded by nature and animals, as a time of frequent confrontations with life and death.

“I learned the importance of facing life and was taught about the blessings of life by the mountains and rivers. I have seen the energy, like souls, leaving animals' bodies at death,” she says.

These experiences inf luenced her art from a young age. By her student years, she had established a style of painting divine beasts with themes of life and death. At university, where she studied to become a painter, she was captivated by the charm of etching. Her monochrome etching “The Forty-ninth Day” garnered media attention.

幼少期から、絵が好きだったという小松さん。当時から、母親に美術館へ連れて行ってもらったり、動 物たちの絵を描いたりしていたそうです。 「もともと自然から多くのエネルギーを感じるのが好きな子供でしたので、その自然との触れ合いを通 して出会った神獣（スピリット）さんたちを、描きたいと思うようになったのがきっかけです」 自然や動物たちに囲まれていた幼少期は、生と死に直面する機会も多かったと振り返ります。 「命と向き合う大切さを学んだこと、山々や川から命の恵みを教えてもらったことが大きいです。また、 動物が亡くなったときに、魂のようなエネルギーが肉体から離れて飛んでいくのを見たことがあります」 体験したことを次々に作品へと落とし込んだ結果、生死をテーマに神獣を描くスタンスは、学生時代に は確立されていた様子。画家を志して進学した美術大学では銅版画の魅力に取りつかれ、繊細な線で描 かれたモノクロの銅版画『四十九日』はメディアでも話題になりました。

Komatsu's current works, notable for their vibrant color palette, mark a shift from her initial monochromatic approach. This transition began with "Shin Fudoki," created in 2014 and dedicated to Izumo Taisha. She discovered the diversity of colors within light and how various colors blend to create black. This period also saw the solidification of her creative philosophy of 'The Great Harmonization.'

"The concept of 'The Great Harmonization’ includes the power known as 'Yamato Chikara' (Yamato Power). 'Yamato Chikara' is one of my creative philosophies. It's not just about Japanese senses, but rather, it refers to the ability and method inherent in Japan from ancient times, to combine various elements and design them cohesively. It's about creating forms that transcend the cultural barriers of different countries with the power of great harmony."

Such a philosophy of 'The Great Harmonization' is said to be inspired by the iconic Komainu (Guardian Lion-dog known for its protective powers) in Komatsu's works.

"The Komainu as a sculptural form is believed to have originated from the 'Cherubim' mentioned in the Bible.

As it traveled across continents to Japan, it underwent a transformation, blending many cultures and religious views into its current form as a stone statue. This too represents a form of Yamato Chikara, truly a product born of 'The Great Harmonization."

THE CREATIVE PHILOSOPHY OF 'THE GREAT HARMONIZATION' 現在の小松さんの作品は、鮮やかな色使いも魅力のひと つ。当初はモノクロだった絵に色が載るようになったき っかけは、2014 年に出雲大社に奉納された『新・風土記』 の制作だったと言います。 小松さんは出雲の地で、光の中に様々な色があることに 気づいたそう。そして、いろいろな色が混ざり合って黒 になるという、絵の具に関する発見にもつながりました。 また、色鮮やかな作品づくりとともに「大調和」という 創作理念も固まっていきます。 「大調和には『大和力（ヤマトチカラ）』という力が 含まれています。『大和力』も私の創作理念の一つな のですが、日本らしさということではなく、日本が古 来持っている、いろいろなものを組み合わせ、まとめ あげてデザインする力であり、方法のことを言います。 異なる国の文化の壁を越え、大調和の力を持って形作 っていきます」 そんな大調和の考え方は、小松さんの作品の中でもアイ コニックな狛犬から学んだものだそうです。 「造形としての狛犬は聖書の中に出てくる『ケルビム』 が起源とされており、大陸を渡って日本に来る際に、多 くの文化や宗教観が混じって今の石像の形へと変貌した と言われます。これも１つの大和力であり、まさに大調 和から成したものなのです」

PATHWAY TO A GLOBAL STAGE BORN FROM CONNECTIONS Following her experiences in Izumo Taisha, Komatsu's artworks evolved into more dynamic and powerful expressions. In 2015, at the Chelsea Flower Show in the UK, she collaborated with garden designer Kazuyuki Ishihara. For Ishihara's "EDO NO NIWA" (Edo Garden), she created the guardian beasts, Arita porcelain Komainu, titled "Guardian Lion Dogs of Heaven and Earth."

This piece, born from her connections with Arita porcelain kilns and Ishihara, crossed national borders and was eventually presented to the curator of the British Museum. In a remarkable achievement for her age, the work was permanently acquired by the British Museum.

"I couldn't believe it at first. It's a museum where the predecessors of Komainu (ancient art pieces) are housed, so I felt deeply grateful and moved, and it made me want to work even harder," she recalls.

Around this time, Komatsu also began to energetically perform live paintings worldwide. A significant turning point was her nomination for the VR section of the 76th Venice International Film Festival with "INORI," where she experienced live painting on site.

"The live painting on Lazzaretto Vecchio Island, where thousands of bodies of people who died from the plague in the 14th and 15th centuries are still buried, was my first time completing a painting while shedding tears for a requiem prayer. That experience taught me the importance of 'prayer.'"

In her live painting sessions, Komatsu believes in the idea that "ego is not necessary," creating art directly on the canvas with paint and her hands, driven by intuition. Her performance seems to embody the prayers of people transcending nations and races.

Komatsu's live painting reached a new stage in 2023.

出雲での体験を機に、小松さんの作品は よりダイナミックで迫力のあるものへと 進化しました。そして 2015 年、イギリ スで開催されたチェルシーフラワーショ ーでは、庭園デザイナー石原和幸さんと コラボレーション。石原さんが手掛ける 『EDO NO NIWA』の守り神として、有 田焼の狛犬『天地の守護獣』を制作しま した。 有田焼の窯元や石原さんとのつながりから 生まれた同作は、国境を越えて大英博物館 のキュレーターのもとへ。異例の若さで、 作品が大英博物館に永久収蔵されることが 決まったのです。

「最初は信じられませんでした。狛犬の先 輩方（古くからの美術品）がいらっしゃる 博物館ですから、心の底から感謝し、感激 し、さらに精進しなくてはと思いました」 また、この頃から世界中で精力的にライブ ペインティングを行うようになった小松さ ん。きっかけは第 76 回ヴェネチア国際映 画祭の VR 部門に「祈祷＝ INORI」がノミ ネートされ、現地でライブペイントを行っ たときの体験が大きなターニングポイント になったと語ります。 「14 世紀から 15 世紀にかけて大流行し た病（ペスト）で亡くなった人々のご遺体

が数千体もいまだに埋まっているラザレッ ト・ヴェッキオ島でのライブペイント。初 めて涙を流しながら鎮魂の祈りで描ききり ました。あの経験は私に『祈ること』の大 切さを教えてくれました」 ライブペインティングでの小松さんは「自 我は必要ない」と、絵の具をキャンバスに 直接塗ったり手で叩きつけたり、直感的に 作品を作り上げます。その姿は、まさに国 や人種を超えた、人々の祈りを体現してい るかのよう。 そんな小松さんのライブペインティングは 2023年、新たなステージへと到達しました。 Gen de Art Dec 2023

LAUNCH OF THE 'SENSE OF SACREDNESS' PROJECT

In 2023, To-ji (Kyoo Gokoku-ji), a World Heritage Site in Kyoto, celebrated the 1200th anniversary of the founding of the Shingon sect. Miwa Komatsu was commissioned by Zenryu Hidaka, the 257th Chief Abbot of To-ji, to create a contemporary mandala. Komatsu worked in the dining hall (Jikidou) of To-ji, creating a large-scale work spanning two 4x4 meter Hanging scroll made of silk and foil over the course of about a month. On October 8, 2023, the moment of completion was revealed during a ritual in the Golden Hall, and the artwork was dedicated to To-ji.

At the same time, she initiated the project "Sense of Sacredness," aiming to protect cultural properties through the power of art. According to Komatsu, at the heart of her advocated concept of "The Great Harmonization" lies the universal sacred sensation "Sense of Sacredness," transcending specific religions. This effort seeks to protect temples and shrines, the abodes of this sacredness, through the power of art.

The second phase of the project took place at Mont Saint-Michel, a World Heritage Site in France. This site shares many similarities with Itsukushima Shrine (Miyajima) in Hiroshima Prefecture. Both are religious sanctuaries with over a thousand years of history, now welcoming numerous tourists as World Heritage Sites. Komatsu performed live painting in Miyajima in 2022 and at Mont Saint-Michel on November 18, 2023.

In front of two canvases at Mont Saint-Michel, she depicted DIVINE SPIRITS and mythical messengers symbolic of Miyajima and Mont Saint-Michel. While feeling the unique atmosphere and climate of each place, the mythical beasts created by Komatsu are said to teach us something.

"The DIVINE SPIRITS exist between the realm of humans and the heavens, protecting sacred areas. They are beings that dispel evil in people and sometimes interact and assist humans.

Through these DIVINE SPIRITS , we can learn the importance of valuing not just the material, but also our souls and the unseen, and the importance of listening to the will of the soul."

京都にある世界遺産・東寺（＝教王 護国寺）が、真言宗立教開宗 1200 周年を迎えた 2023 年。小松さんは 東寺の第 257 世長者、飛鷹全隆師か ら現代の曼荼羅（マンダラ）の制作 を依頼されました。小松さんは東寺 の食堂（じきどう）で、約 1 か月に わたり 4×4 ｍの絹と箔で出来た掛け 軸 2 枚に渡る大作を制作。2023 年 10 月 8 日、法要が行われた金堂で 完成の瞬間を公開し、作品を東寺へ 奉納しました。 同時に、アートの力で文化財の保護 を 目 指 す プ ロ ジ ェ ク ト「Sense of Sacredness」をスタート。小松さ んの提唱する「大調和」の根底には、 特定の宗教を超えた普遍的な聖なる 感 覚 “Sense of Sacredness” が あ ると言います。その拠り所である寺 社仏閣を、アートの力で守ろうとす る取り組みです。 プロジェクト第二弾の舞台は、フラ ンスの世界遺産モン・サン＝ミシェ ル。この地は、広島県にある厳島神 社（宮島）と多くの共通点を持って います。どちらも宗教的な聖地とし て 1000 年以上の歴史があり、現在 は世界遺産として大勢の観光客を迎 える場所です。小松さんは 2022 年 に 宮 島 で、2023 年 11 月 18 日 に モン・サン＝ミシェルでライブペイ ンティングを行いました。 モン・サン＝ミシェルで 2 枚のキャ ンバスを前に描かれたのは、宮島と モン・サン＝ミシェルを象徴するよ うな神獣や神の使いです。土地ごと の空気や風土を感じながら、小松さ んが生み出す神獣たちは、あること を教えてくれるそうです。 「神獣は人間界と天の世界の狭間に いる存在であり、聖域を守っていま す。また、人の悪を払う存在であり、 人と関わって手助けをしてくれるこ ともあります。私たちが物質だけに とらわれることなく、もっと魂や見 えない部分を大切にすること、魂の 意志を聞くことの大切さを神獣を通 して学ぶことができます」

Can you share your journey into the art?

My upbringing was in a household where art installations frequently changed, instilling a deep appreciation for art in me. Initially, I pursued a different business path, but as my father grew older, he requested that I join Whitestone as the second generation. My goal was to internationalize and infuse more technology into Whitestone's philosophy.

My father excelled in the secondary market and educating people about art. I aimed to connect established artists and emerging young talents across different countries.

Whitestone Gallery has branches in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, and Singapore. What motivated you to expand across various locations in Asia?

Our expansion is rooted in the belief that art is not confined by nationality. We wanted to create a vast market that transcends local boundaries, allowing artists to gain recognition on an international scale. Often, artists claim fame in their home countries but lack opportunities to exhibit their work abroad. By showcasing successful examples of international collaboration, we hope to inspire other galleries and artists to follow suit, making the art market more accessible and expansive.

Art has a unique way of bringing people together, transcending borders and languages. This idea comes alive in the current "We Love Korea" exhibition at Whitestone Gallery in Seoul, featuring a diverse range of works by artist Miwa Komatsu. Whitestone Gallery, a well-known art hub with a global presence, embodies this concept, uniting art lovers and creators from around the world. Here, we delve into a conversation with CEO Koei Shiraishi at the Seoul branch, where he shares his inspiring vision and the gallery's dedication to fostering artistic connections and spreading love through art.

Could you share the inspiration behind your recent exhibition "We Love Korea"? What motivated you to showcase this artwork in Seoul?

Love is a fundamental aspect of human connection and creativity. In our gallery, we emphasize love as the driving force behind our exhibitions and collaborations. We aim to build a culture of appreciation and mutual respect, not only among artists and collectors but also within our diverse, international team. Love for art and culture unites us and allows us to connect on a deeper level, transcending linguistic and cultural barriers.

Miwa Komatsu's artwork is currently on display in Seoul. What inspired you to showcase her work, and how would you describe the impact of her art?

When selecting artists, our primary criterion is uniqueness.

Miwa Komatsu's artwork stood out as a unique expression of the power of love and prayer. Her paintings convey a sense of beauty and spirituality that resonates with our core philosophy. Her work touches upon a universal human experience—the act of praying for the well-being of loved ones. We believe her art can inspire and bring solace to those who view it.

Beginning her journey as an assistant curator at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MMCA) in 1989, Choi devoted over 25 years to the institution. During this extensive period, she not only honed her skills but brought about significant transformation to MMCA. By spearheading efforts such as the construction of MMCA's new branch near Gyeongbok Palace, known as MMCA Seoul, she solidified its reputation as Korea's representative public museum. This vast structure stands as a testament to Korea’s commitment to art and culture.

With the dawning of a new chapter, Choi took up the mantle of director at SeMA. Her ambitions for the institution are clear: "We aim to make SeMA a leading museum in Korea with strong international partnerships," she remarked. Given Seoul's unique place in the global landscape, Choi believes that SeMA can echo Seoulites' fervor for contemporary art and their desire to engage in meaningful interactions with both Korean and international artists.

The Evolution of SeMA: Pa s t , P r e s e n t , a n d F u t u r e Tracing back to 1988, SeMA was inaugurated in celebration of the Seoul Olympic Games. "In 2002, SeMA relocated to its current premises, a historic edifice that served as the National Court since the 1920s," Choi recalls. Its relocation marked the beginning of a new era as it started hosting numerous international exhibitions. With successful exhibitions featuring art giants like David Hockney and Edward Hopper, SeMA's stature as a representative public museum for citizens has been fortified.

Furthermore, the forthcoming Seoul Mediacity Biennale will present SeMA in a renewed light, reinforcing its identity as both a public and international museum. SeMA also maintains a notable presence at prominent international events in Seoul, such as Frieze Seoul in September. "We're unveiling a very ambitious program during Frieze," Choi revealed, "including a preview of the Biennale’s artworks and performances, as well as the Nanji Residency Tour program, aiming to attract the many art lovers in Seoul."

The diversified approach of SeMA can be further observed in its seven branches including Buk-Seoul, Nam-Seoul, Art Archieves, Nanji Residency, Bunker, Storage and Nam June Paik Memorial House. These divisions cater to various art forms, from archives to experimental art, showcasing the diverse richness of SeMA’s collections. Choi elucidates, "Our curators are constantly exploring, and we’re even considering expanding our storage in areas like Seoripul in Gangnam."

Throughout its 35 years, SeMA's exhibitions have consistently stirred global interest. The Seoul Mediacity Biennale, launched in 1995, is particularly noteworthy. Its recent theme, "THIS TOO, IS A MAP," accentuated global aes t het ics beyond borders , empha sizi n g abstract communication and our collective existence. This biennale deeply probed the globa l dy na mics w it hin Seoul, explor ing themes of displacement and transnational bonds.

Choi h i g h l i g ht s t he mu s eu m's s t r at e g ic approach, ex pla i n i n g, " We est abl i sh ou r agenda for five years. For instance, next year's theme is 'Architecture and Communication'.

We ’ r e i n t a l k s w i t h g l o b a l l y r e n ow n e d architects and are also planning a significant remodeling of the main exhibition gallery."

Such a v isionar y approach isn’t conf ined to exhibitions. "Today's visitors seek active i nvol ve m e nt ," C hoi o b s e r ve s , r e fe r r i n g t o a u n ique i n i t i a t i ve w her e a t t ende e s , particularly children, contribute to a dynamic clay artwork. In the exhibit “Do Ho Suh and Children: Artland” at Buk-Seoul, ‘Artland’ invites young participants to co-create an installation. "Our goal is to foster immersive experiences, not merely passive observation."

SeMA is not just a museum; it’s a ref lection of Seoul’s vibrant ar t cult ure, connecting past , present , and future. As Choi puts it , "SeM A's journey is about communicating many concepts, managing the museum as an active, contemporary, and sustainable entity in Korean society." And with such dedication, SeMA's future looks as promising and dynamic as the art it showcases.

Château Mouton Rothschild is famous for reproducing original artworks on the label of its wine. How was Chiharu Shiota chosen for the 2021 vintage, and what aspects of her work resonate with the Château Mouton Rothschild name?

I first heard about Chiharu Shiota a long time ago from my mother, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who had been fascinated by one of her works, shown alongside those of other young artists, at the Galerie Templon in Paris.

She thought Chiharu Shiota really stood out and she was right, because the artist has since become world-famous.

In 2019, on the occasion of a visit to Château Mouton Rothschild, the director of the Mori A r t Center in Tok yo, which wa s holding a major Chiharu Shiota retrospective, offered me a signed copy of the magnificent catalogue.

Leafing through it, I in turn was fascinated by Chiharu Shiota and said to myself “One day I will ask her to create something for Mouton”.

Her fa sci n at i n g work w it h t hose red a nd black threads reminded me that wine is also all about connections: between people and vines, between vines and the climate, between 113

the wine-drinker and their glass of Château Mouton Rothschild, and so on.

Could you tell us about the vision or the narrative you were looking to capture with Chiharu Shiota’s work for the label of the 2021 vintage, especially given the artist’s close connection with the world of wine and her representation of the relationship between people and nature?

Within the vast spectrum of art that stretches from abstraction to unadulterated realism, for me the label embodies what I would call metaphorical realism: I see a vinegrower firmly grasping a fabulous cluster of grapes. I see a human figure, drawn as a slim silhouette that is at the same time upright and solid, facing gorgeous, generous nature which, with four red threads representing the four seasons, leads it in f light towards a shared destiny – a happy one, we may suppose!

What impact do you think this collaboration with a renowned artist like Chiharu Shiota w i l l h ave on t he percept ion of Mout on Rothschild, both within the artistic community and among wine-lovers?

The s t r en g t h a nd or i g i n a l it y of Ch i h a r u Shiota’s vision shows the artistic community the extent to which Mouton Rothschild remains a b e g u i l i n g a nd i ne x h au s t i ble s ou r c e of inspiration. Likewise, the wine-lover’s pleasure is enhanced all the more when a great artist fires their fancy and their imagination.

C a n yo u g i ve u s yo u r o p i n i o n o n h ow Château Mouton Rothschild might continue to combine the world of wine with that of the visual arts? Are there any particular artistic styles or movements that you would like to explore in forthcoming vintages?

As each year, we will continue to combine the world of Château Mouton Rothschild with that of the visual arts, both on the label and at the château itself, where the original ar t works created by great artists to illustrate a vintage are on permanent display. While the Château Mouton Rothschild label will always retain its traditional form, I would like to fur ther diversify the range of creative techniques to include, for exa mple, photog raphy, v ideo, relief, graffiti, fresco, digital and so on. But it isn’t always easy to reconcile tradition and innovation!

シャトー・ムートン・ロスチャイルドのワイン ラベルには、現代アートのオリジナル作品を 飾ることが伝統となっています。2021 年ヴ ィンテージに塩田千春を選ばれた経緯と、同 氏の芸 術 活動とシャトー・ムートン・ロスチ ャイルドとが共鳴する点についてお聞かせく ださい。 塩田千春の名前を初めて耳にしたのは随分前 のことで、我が母、フィリピーヌ・ド・ロスチャイ ルド夫人からでした。母はギャラリー・テンプ ロンにおいて他数名のアーティスト作品ととも に展示されていた彼女の作品と出会い、強い 衝撃を受けたようです。母曰く、塩田千春の作 品が放つ存在感は群を抜いており、国際的ア ーティストとしてのその後の活躍からも、母の 鑑識眼は確かだったと言えます。 2019 年、 東京の森美術館の館長 （南條史生氏） がシャトー・ムートン・ロスチャイルドを訪問く ださり、同美術館では塩田千春さんの大規模 個展が催されたということで、素晴らしい展示 カタログをサイン入りでプレゼントいただきま した。ページをめくるごとに今度は私自身が塩 田千春の虜になり、いつかムートンの作品制作 を依頼しようと心に決めたのです。赤や黒の糸 を使った作品にすっかり心を奪われ、ワインも また、無数の繋がりからなる偶発的な産物で あるということを改めて意識しました。人間と

ぶどう樹の繋がり、 ぶどう樹と天候との繋がり、 飲む者とムートン・ロスチャイルドのワインとの 繋がり… 塩田千春が制作した 2021 年ヴィンテージの ワインラベル作品に託された世界観やストー リーについて、特にアーティストとワインの世 界との密接な繋がり、そして彼女の人間と自然 との関係性を表現する手法との関連の中でど のように感じたかお聞かせください。 抽象的要素から純然たるリアリズムまで、アー トの表現範囲は実に幅広いものです。私にと ってこのラベルはまさに「メタフォリカルリア リズム」と呼ばれるべきもので、世にも立派な ぶどうを片手でしっかりと握るヴィニュロンの 姿が思い浮かびます。赤々ときらめく溢れんば かりの自然を前に立つひとりの人物。か細いシ ルエットではありながら、真っ直ぐに、しっか りと描かれています。４本の赤い糸は四季を 表現しており、これからの幸せに違いない運 命を共にしようと、人物を宙へと導いているか のようです！ 塩田千春をはじめとする有名アーティストとの コラボレーションは、美術界およびワイン好 き界隈におけるムートン・ロスチャイルドのブ ランドイメージにどのような影響を及ぼすとお 考えですか。

強靭でいて他に類を見ない塩田千春の世界 観に触れることで、底知れないインスピレー ションの源であり続けるムートン・ロスチャイ ルドの魅力に美術界の方々は着目するでしょ うし、ワイン愛好家の方々は、巨匠アーティス トによって夢と空想の世界に誘われ、ワイン の美味しさも喜びもさらに高まるのではない でしょうか。 シャトー・ムートン・ロスチャイルドがワイン の世界とビジュアルアートの世界とを繋ぐ架 け橋であり続けるために、これからの方向性に ついてはどうお考えですか。今後のヴィンテー ジのために特に開拓したいアートのスタイルや ムーブメントはありますか ? ワインラベル制作はもちろん、巨匠アーティス トらの原画を一堂に集めて展示しているシャト ー・ムートン・ロスチャイルドにおいても、ムー トン・ロスチャイルドの世界観とビジュアルア ートの世界観との融合に今後も引き続き取り 組んでまいります。シャトー・ムートン・ロスチ ャイルドのワインラベル自体は従来の形状を 保ち続けるとしても、作品の制作手法に関して は、写真、映像、レリーフ、グラフィティーアー ト、フレスコ画、デジタル技術など、今後さらに 多様化を進めていきたいと考えています。 ただ、 伝統とイノベーションの仲を取り持つ作業は容 易ではありません！

Your collaboration with Château Mouton Rothschild for their 2021 v intage w ine label marks a unique intersection of visual art and viticulture. What initially inspired this partnership, and how did the winery's relationship with nature inf luence your creative process?

The Rothschild family inv ited me to collaborate with them after they had seen my artwork at different art fairs. They especially remembered my Insta llat ion “The Key in the Hand” which I had created for the 56th Venice Biennale, when I was representing Japan.

For our first meeting, they invited me to visit their estate in Bordeaux. It was lovely seeing the vineyards. They explained to me how they make the wine and let me try different bottles from different years. It was a special experience.

When I was looking at the vineyards and the grapes, I thought of a red circle, like a cell of a body, full of life like the universe. The more I learned how the wine was made the more I thought about Mouton Rothschild’s relationship with nature. They depend on the weather and do not interfere with mother nature, and they accept the conditions the grapes grow in. It seemed like a very important balance. I thought about humans and nature and how important this connection is but also how fragile.

You r a r t wor k , " Un i ve r s e o f Mou t on ," features a human silhouette connected to nature by four lines representing the four seasons and the associated emotions.

Could you elaborate on the sy mbolism and significance of these elements in the context of the wine label design?

When I was visiting the winery, it felt like entering another universe. It feels like an organism working in a different pace under different conditions, I felt like somewhere else on earth.

I began to think that it is better to hold the con nect ion. In cont ra st to t h i s im men se universe, I wanted to include a single person.

I wanted to create this connection between the human and this universe. The four lines c on n e c t i n g t h e hu m a n t o t h e u n i ve r s e represents the four seasons (winter, spring, summer, autumn) and all the emotions that are connected with that, loneliness, hope, and achievement.

I n yo u r v i ew, h ow d o e s t h e l a b e l f o r Château Mouton Rothschild 2021, i l l u s t r a t e d a s " U n i ve r s e o f M o u t o n ," c a p t u r e t h e e s s e n c e o f t h e v i n t a ge's qualities and the vineyard's history?

I think this wine of 2021 has such a special place in human history, during the time of the pandemic, it was the best time for nature to recover. When I taste this wine, I think of the humans being isolated but still connected t h r ou g h t he ex p er ienc e . A nd I t h i n k of memory. The painting represents this special

Look ing ahead, are there any new di rect ions or themes you are eager to explore in your art? Can we anticipate more collaborations like the one with Château Mouton Rothschild in the future?

Ne x t ye a r, I a m doi n g t he s t a g e de s i g n for t he Opera “Idomeneo, re di Cret a” at Grand Theatre Geneva, in Switzerland with choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. This is a very different project to my usual exhibitions.

It can be a challenge to create a stage design.

I love these collaborations and being part of Mouton’s historically important art collection.

But so fa r, t here a re no pla ns for simi la r collaborations.

Now, I am very interested in the human body and what it means to be human and how our existence remains in our organs. I have read these very fascinating stories of people having organ transplants and afterwards loving, for example, to eat fish even though they hated it before. I find this very fascinating and want to explore this aspect more.

秋冬を表現しています。孤独、希望、そして達成感。そこにはありと あらゆる感情が繋がれています。 「ムートンの宇宙」として描かれた 2021 年シャトー・ムートン・ ロスチャイルドのワインラベルですが、ヴィンテージの品質や畑での 1 年の本質的部分をどのように捉え描いていると思われますか。 2021 年生まれのこのワインは、人類の歴史の中でも大きな意味を 持っています。パンデミックは、自然にとってはリカバリーに最適 な時間でした。このワインを味わうと、隔離されながらも、その経 験を通じて繋がり続 ける人々のことを思 い出します。そして 記憶について考えま す。この絵はこの特 別な時期を象徴して おり、ワインの味わ いを視覚的に表現し ています。 ワイナリーを訪れた 際、まるで別世界に 入り込んだような感 覚に襲われました。 いつもとは異なるペ ース、異なる環境で、 オルガニズムが動い ているような、もし くは地球上のどこか 別の場所にいるよう な感覚でした。 今後の活動につい て、アーティストと して開拓したい新た な方向性やテーマは ありますか。シャト ー・ ム ー ト ン・ ロ ス チャイルドに続くコ ラボレーションに期 待してよろしいでし ょうか。 来年はシディ・ラル ビ・シェルカウイが 振付けを手掛けるオ ペラ『イドメネオ、 レ・ディ・クレタ』 がスイスのジュネー ブ大劇場にて上演予 定です。私はその舞 台デザインを担当し ます。展示が中心の普段の活動からはかなり異なるプロジェクトで、 舞台デザイン制作は大きなチャレンジとなるでしょう。 ムートンの歴史あるアートコレクションに参加させていただき、こう いうコラボレーションは大好きですが、今回と同様のプロジェクトの 予定は今のところありません。 今は人体に特に強く関心を抱いています。人間であることは何を意 味するのか、私たちの臓器に私たちの存在はどのように記録される のか。臓器移植を受けた人々の証言を読み、以前は大嫌いだった魚 料理が大好きになったとか、衝撃的な体験談の数々に触れました。 この点は私にとって非常に興味深く、さらに突き詰めて開拓してい きたいです。 Gen de Art Dec 2023

On September 29th, Yohji Yamamoto unveiled his 2024 Spring/Summer collection at the Hôtel de Ville de Paris.

The white r unway, cent ra l ly posit ioned w it hin t he grand hall, contrasted strikingly with Yohji Yamamoto’s signature black garments, immersing the audience into his distinct world.

The collection’s opening look featured a classic style with striking white power shoulders. Paired with a cut-out long skirt, it exuded an elegant and feminine allure. The second ensemble swiftly shifted the mood with a frilled mini skirt that sat above the knees.

A defining trait of this collection is its treatment of visible skin. Employing a variety of materials like sheer fabrics and lace, and further emphasizing bold cut-outs, Yohji Yamamoto uniquely manifests femininity in his designs.

He further elaborated on his inspiration, “It started with the recent global heat. The only thing I can do in response to such heat is to desig n cooler clothes.” Yohji Yamamoto's commitment to adapting materials and designs showcases his dedication to excellence within the realm of fashion.

A Journey Through Time and Art From the lively streets of Japan to the bustling hubs of London and New York, TAKAY's journey began in earnest in the mid-nineties. After his foundational years in Japan, London beckoned, presenting opportunities with esteemed magazines like i-D and The Face. It wasn't long before design giants like Emporio Armani, Yves St Laurent, and Anna Sui became regular clientele, entrusting him with their visions.

His success, however, goes beyond the gloss of fashion magazines. TAKAY's work graced global exhibitions - from the esteemed halls of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London to the Metropolitan Museum in New York. And yet, whether it's his book ECHOS released in Tokyo or his homage to Tadao Ando in IN PRAISE OF SHADOW (HOMAGE TO TADAO ANDO) , TAKAY's voice remains distinctly his.

Transitioning effortlessly from stills to motion pictures, TAKAY maintains an evocative and fluid poetic style. A style, as he mentions, that seeks to "capture the movement where they are moving naturally."

Crafting Magic, Frame by Frame In an intimate chat, Takay shared insights into his approach, "I believe like fashion, but also fashion photography can be like art," he opines. He expresses a fascination with the abstract, finding beauty in the lines and curves of architecture as if they were the folds of a couture dress.

Recounting his time working with brands like Emporio Armani, TAKAY relays the diligence it required, sometimes having to reshoot if the lighting or styling wasn't to designer Giorgio Armani's liking. Yet, the challenge and the rigour fascinated him. The same commitment he brings to every shot, whether it's capturing the lines of a renowned building or the fluid motion of an athlete.

His passion for fashion photography and the blend of artistry is evident when he talks about shooting for Yohji Yamamoto. "I just want to take a picture. Like a documentary reportage using this Yohji's collection," he says, displaying a keen desire to capture the essence of every subject he photographs.

YUTAKA SADO The Fifth Music Director Shaping the Future of the New Japan Philharmonic 佐渡裕：新日本フィルハーモニー交響楽団の未来を創る第 5 代音楽監督

Born in Kyoto in 1961, Yutaka Sado is a conductor who studied under Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) and Seiji Ozawa (born 1935), and in 2015, he became the Music Director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna, Austria. Now, as the fifth Music Director of the New Japan Philharmonic, what initiatives is he undertaking with this leading Japanese orchestra?

This orchestra holds a special place in my heart. Being chosen as its Music Director, four and a half decades since our first encounter, is an immense honor." The New Japan Philharmonic was established in 1972 by the world-renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa and composer Naozumi Yamamoto (1932-2002), starting with the music program "The Orchestra Has Come" (19721983), modeled after Leonard Bernstein's "Young People’s Concert" (1958-1972), in which Bernstein was involved as a planner, conductor, and host.

"Growing up in Kyoto, I was completely enchanted by classical music. As a high school student, I started taking night buses to Tokyo to hear live performances by Maestro Ozawa."

In 1987, he participated in the Tanglewood Music Festival and became Ozawa's assistant. Thirty-five years have passed since he first stood on the podium of the New Japan Philharmonic until he became its Music Director.

"In May 1961, when Bernstein first brought the New York Philharmonic for an Asian tour, I was born. I feel an uncanny destiny in this coincidence." The chosen associate conductor at that time was Ozawa, and the composer was Toshiro Mayuzumi (1929-1997). Later, Mayuzumi started the music program "Untitled Concert" (since 1964) to further popularize classical music.

"I myself hosted it for seven and a half years (2008-2015). It was great to meet people from various genres. And now, I have taken over the general supervision of the annual event "SUNTORY Presents Beethoven's 9th with a Cast of 10,000" (since 1983), a legacy from Naozumi Yamamoto."

クラシックとの出会いは 少年時代に見た音楽番組 「見えない糸がずっと続いていて、今ここにいる様な 感覚です。僕にとって非常に思い入れのあるオーケス トラ。出会いから四世紀半を経て音楽監督に選ばれた という事は、大変光栄な事だと思っています」新日本 フィルハーモニー交響楽団は 1972 年、世界的な指揮 者の小澤征爾氏と指揮者・作曲家の山本直純 (19322002 年 ) 氏が立ち上げ、『オーケストラがやって来 た』(1972-1983 年 ) という音楽番組を始めました。 これは師匠バーンスタイン氏が企画、指揮及び司会を 務めた『Young People’s Concert』(1958-1972 年 ) という音楽番組をモデルにしたもの。 「京都で生まれ育った僕はすっかりクラシック音楽に 魅せられてしまいました。高校生になると小澤さんの 生演奏を聴くために夜行バスに乗り、東京へ通う様に なったのです」

『題名のない音楽会』と 『一万人の第九』を受け継いで 1987 年タングルウッド音楽祭に参加し、小澤氏のア シスタントをする事になります。新日本フィルで初め て指揮台に立ったデビューの日から音楽監督になるま で 35 年の月日が流れていました。 「1961 年 5 月、バーンスタインがニューヨーク・ フィルハーモニックを連れて初めてアジア公演をした 時、僕は生まれました。偶然とは思えない不思議なご 縁を感じます」その時選ばれた副指揮者は小澤氏、作 曲家は黛敏郎 ( まゆずみとしろう 1929-1997 年 ) 氏 でした。その後クラシック音楽をもっと普及させよう と黛敏郎さんが『題名のない音楽会』(1964 年 -) とい う音楽番組を開始。 「僕自身も７年半 (2008-2015 年 ) 司会を務めまし た。色々なジャンルの方と知り合えて良かったと思い ます。そして今や年末の恒例となっている『サントリ ー 1 万人の第九』(1983 年 -) の総監督は山本直純さ んから受け継ぎました」

Creating a Beloved Local Orchestra Since his appointment as Music Director in April this year, he has set a mission for himself.

"How can we enhance the value of having a concert hall and orchestra in the city? As the Artistic Director of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center for 20 years, I aim to do the same in Sumida Ward. In Europe, there are national theaters like the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, and the Berlin Philharmonic. The New Japan Philharmonic has a wonderful hall with excellent acoustics, Sumida Triphony Hall, where the orchestra lives, practices, and creates sound.

Although it's a familiar presence for locals, the threshold should be lower, yet crossing it should bring joy. Museums have evolved, offering audio guides explaining masterpieces. The joy and inspiration from orchestra performances are lifelong treasures. Perhaps the world of classical music should evolve like museums."

As part of his activities as "Sumida Music Ambassador," appointed in 2022, he plans to visit all, junior high, and high schools in Sumida Ward. He has already visited four schools, including Tokyo Metropolitan Ryogoku High School, providing guidance to their orchestras and bands.

"I value being active in Sumida Ward, where I have a local connection.

A leading Japanese orchestra must be loved by locals, contribute to the community, and deliver 'vitamins for the heart.' I hope the New Japan Philharmonic, Sumida Triphony Hall, and Sumida Ward will work together as one to create a richer spirit in the community."

地元に愛されるオーケストラを 今年 4 月に音楽監督に就任して以来、自ら掲げているミッション があると言います。 「街の中にホールとオーケストラがあるという価値観をどう高め るか。兵庫県立芸術文化センター芸術監督として２０年続けて来 た事を、墨田区でもやってみようと言うわけです。ウィーンには 国立歌劇場、ミラノにはスカラ座、ベルリンにはベルリン・フィ ルハーモニーというように、ヨーロッパにはその国を代表する劇 場があります。新日本フィルは『すみだトリフォニーホール』と いう素晴らしい音響のホールを持ち、オーケストラがここを拠点 とし、ここで練習し、音を作っているのが特徴です。地元の方に とっては身近な存在ではありますが、敷居はもっと低い方が良い。 ただ、その敷居を跨ぐ事に喜びがあるものでなければなりません。 最近は美術館も変わり、音声ガイドで名画の解説を聴く事ができ る様になりました。オーケストラで得た感動は一生の宝物。クラ シックの世界も美術館の様に変わっていかなくてはならないので はないでしょうか」 2022 年に就任した「すみだ音楽大使」の活動の一環として、墨田 区内の小学校・中学校・高校を全てまわる予定です。既に都立両 国高校など 4 校を訪ね、管弦楽部・吹奏楽部を指導しました。 「地元である墨田区で活動する事を大事にして行きたいと考えて います。日本を代表するオーケストラというのは、地元の人に愛 され、街に貢献し、心のビタミンをしっかり届けるという存在で なくてはなりません。街の人々の心をより豊かにできるように、 新日本フィルとすみだトリフォニーホールと墨田区が三位一体と なって取り組んで行きたいと願っています」

Embracing the 'Sound' from European Experience His life shuttling between Europe and Japan has continued for over 30 years. He lived in Paris, France, for 18 years, in Berlin, Germany, for 5 years, and is now in his 9th year in Vienna, Austria.

"Right across from my current apartment is where Mozart first lived. Just a block away is where he composed 'The Marriage of Figaro.' There's the restaurant Brahms frequented, the café where Schubert had tea, and the shop where Beethoven held salon concerts... Vienna truly is the city of music. Conducting local orchestras in various parts of Europe, dining with locals, and befriending them has given me invaluable 'sounds' and sensations."

These experiences in Paris and Vienna are now being utilized in his music-making with the New Japan Philharmonic.

"The European cities are surrounded by stone buildings that resonate well. The sound I practice and the reverberating sound are my own. I hope to share these 'sounds' and sensations, gained from years abroad, as stories with the New Japan Philharmonic. Our current theme is 'Wien Line,' focusing on composers who thrived in Vienna, such as Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, and Beethoven. Their works require full commitment from each of the 80 orchestra members. Thus, they are ideal for building a relationship between the orchestra and the conductor. Before each performance, I talk about the program, non-musical topics, and events in Sumida Ward. I want to further spread the orchestra in the community."

Maestro Yutaka Sado, who has insisted on creating a unique sound by living near theaters and immersing himself in local cultures, has returned triumphantly to his roots in the New Japan Philharmonic. He aims to create an orchestra deeply connected to the Sumida region. The exquisite harmony created by his highest level of skill, learned from Bernstein and Ozawa, and the tones resonating with European breath, invite you to experience them at the Sumida Triphony Hall.

ヨーロッパでの経験値を活かす「音」 ヨーロッパと日本を行き来する生活は 30 年以上続いています。フランスのパリに 18 年、 ドイツのベルリンに 5 年、そして現在の拠点であるオーストリアのウィーンは 9 年目に なりました。 「今住んでいるアパートの向かい側はモーツァルトが最初に住んだと言われる場所、ワン ブロック先には『フィガロの結婚』を作曲したアパート。ブラームスが通ったレストラン、 シューベルトがお茶を飲んでいたカフェ、ベートーヴェンがサロンコンサートを開催して いたお店…まさに音楽の都、ウィーンです。ヨーロッパの各地で地元のオーケストラを指 揮し、地元で食事をし、地元の人達と友達になって得た感覚や身についた『音』は、かけ がえのない財産となりました」 そうしたパリやウィーンでの暮らしが、新日本フィルでの音作りにも活かされています。 「ヨーロッパの街は良く響く石造りの建物に囲まれています。練習する音も残響している 音も含めて自分の音。こういった長年の海外経験によって得られた『音』や感覚を、新日 本フィルでも土産話のように伝え、生かしていきたいと思います。現在掲げているテーマ は『Wien Line』。ウィーンで活躍した作曲家の作品をレパートリーの軸として据えてい ます。ハイドン、モーツァルト、ブラームス、ベートーヴェンなど、どれも 80 人いたら 80 人が全力で演奏しなければならない作品ばかり。そのため、オーケストラと指揮者の 関係を築いていくためには最適なのです。毎回演奏前にはプログラムの解説や演奏以外の 事、墨田区の行事の事などを取り入れてお話しています。街の中にオーケストラをもっと 広めて行きたいですね」 ホールの近くに居を構え、その土地に住んだ者にしか出せない音作りにこだわって来たマエ ストロ、佐渡裕氏。自身の、そして日本クラシック界の原点でもある新日本フィルハーモニ ー交響楽団に凱旋し、墨田区の地域に密着したオーケストラを目指しています。バーンスタ イン氏や小澤征爾氏から学んだ最高峰の技術と、ヨーロッパの息吹を感じさせる音色が生み 出す極上のハーモニーを体感しに、是非一度すみだトリフォニーホールへ足を運んでみては いかがでしょうか。

"When sourcing ingredients, my approach is always to connect directly with the producers.

By visiting them on their farms, I have the opp or t u n it y t o en g a ge i n conver s at ion s , allowing them to share their daily practices and experiences. This personal interaction fosters a strong sense of connection and mutual understanding." This quest has taken him from

the nor thernmost par t of Hokkaido, where he seeks out the finest kelp known as Kombu, t o t he sout her n mos t i sl a nd of Yon a g u n i , where he discovers the most exquisite sea salt. His relentless travels across the country allow him to uncover the unique f lavors and characteristics of each region, enriching his culinary creations.

Throughout his journeys, Namae has observed a common thread among producers: the impact of climate change. He recognizes that living in the city often disconnects people from the sensitivity to nature's changes. This realization fuels his desire to learn more, prompting him to

seek scientific evidence and a rational approach to understand nature better. He reveals, "I visit producers to develop a mutual understanding a nd en su re t he freshest i n g red ient s . Th i s curiosity led me to pursue a master's degree in Agricultural Science at the university."

Ref lecting on his personal journey, he shares, "Three years ago, I resided in the heart of the city, near Shibuya, for an extended period. However, I made a life-changing decision to move out of Tokyo and now call Kamakura ‘home’. Situated south of Tokyo, Kamakura brings me much closer to the ocean." Living in Kamakura affords Namae the opportunity to indulge in morning dives before heading to work. "This lifestyle choice aligns with my goal of making a positive impact not only in the culinary world and restaurant industry but also in society as a whole. When guests visit our restaurant, I hope their positive energy resonates and contributes to the betterment of society. It's akin to a circulation or circle of energy that I aspire to cultivate in the near future."

生江氏は料理への情熱だけでなく、ダイビングを通 じて海の静けさとリラクゼーションを楽しんでいま す。彼は個人的な旅について、「3 年前、私は長ら く都心の渋谷近くに住んでいましたが、東京を離 れ、現在は鎌倉を『ホーム』と呼んでいます。鎌倉 は東京の南に位置していて、海と簡単に触れ合うこ とができます」と述べています。現在生江氏は、鎌 倉で朝のダイビングを楽しむようになったと言いま す。「このライフスタイルの選択は、料理の世界や レストラン業界だけでなく、社会全体にポジティブ な影響をもたらすという私の目標と一致していま す。お客様が当レストランを訪れたとき、お客様の ポジティブなエネルギーが共鳴することで、社会の 向上に寄与することを期待しています。これは、私 が将来実現したいと考えているエネルギーの循環の 一環です」

Upon entering CYCLE by Mauro Colagreco, located in the heart of Tokyo's Otemachi, you're immediately enveloped in tranquillity. The minimalist wooden interiors evoke a serene forest set ting, mirroring the restaurant's core philosophy: Earth as the muse.

Guiding this ethos is the distinguished Argentinian chef Mauro Colagreco, renowned for his achievements at the three-Michelin-starred restaurant, Mirazur, and his honour as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for biodiversity. Alongside him, his protégé, Chef Yuhei Miyamoto, crafts dishes that beautifully synchronise with nature's rhythms.

東 京・ 大 手 町 に 位 置 す る「CYCLE by Mauro Colagreco」では、扉の先に静寂に包まれた空間が広 がっています。木製のミニマルなインテリアは、穏や かな森の雰囲気を呼び起こし、レストランの基本理念 である「地球をミューズに」を映し出しています。こ の理念を導くのは、ミシュラン 3 つ星レストラン「ミ ラズール」での実績と、生物多様性国連親善大使とし て著名なアルゼンチン出身のシェフ・マウロ・コラグ レコです。彼の弟子である宮本悠平シェフは、自然の リズムと見事に調和する料理を作り上げます。

The Essence of CYCLE: Nature as Muse At CYCLE's core is a deep reverence for the perpetual cycles of nature. For Colagreco, hailing from Argentina and having made his mark on the French Riviera, nature's allure has consistently been a source of inspiration. His dishes, infused with the essence of landscapes, changing seasons, and rich biodiversity, are a testament to this.

Expressing his philosophy, Colagreco shares, "Grasping the synerg y between landscapes and attuning to the seasonal shifts to transform this beauty onto a plate is the privilege of our profession. We are, intrinsically, members of a global food community, interdependent in every aspect. Engaging with the Earth underscores this truth. To cultivate a garden is to witness the continuum of life and understand the significance of relationships in nurturing life. Such insights into nature's complexities inspire my culinary creations."

Chef Yuhei Miyamoto: Culinary Passion Realised Playing an integral role in this vision is Chef Miyamoto. Born in Chiba, Japan, his culinary spark was ignited by his family's rich gastronomic traditions. His culinary journey transitioned from the familiar terrains of Japan to the culinary theatres of Europe. A pivotal encounter with Colagreco in 2018 melded his path with Mirazur's, enriching his understanding of nature-infused gastronomy. Equipped with invaluable insights from Mirazur and an undying passion, Miyamoto, in tandem with Colagreco, has actualised their shared vision through CYCLE in Japan.
