Message from the Principal Karen Jebb | Principal

Marie Madeleine d’Houët has continued to inspire Gen Girls to have courage and confidence, and be leaders within our College community and beyond.

Welcome to the second edition of GenNarrations for 2019. As we conclude the wonderful celebrations of the 130th Anniversary of Genazzano FCJ College, we acknowledge and celebrate another significant milestone - the Bicentenary of the Society of the Faithful Companions of Jesus. On Friday 20 September, Genazzano joined the FCJ schools in England, Ireland and France to acknowledge the beginning of this landmark anniversary with a Global Day of Kindness (#FCJ200). It was wonderful to view the acts of kindness around the globe shared on this symbolic day. We have much to celebrate in acknowledging the FCJ Bicentenary over the upcoming year, and I encourage you to keep an eye on our news for special events that will occur in 2020.

In acknowledging the legacy of the Society of the Faithful Companions of Jesus, I would like to share with you a story of Marie Madeleine d’Houët that has continued to inspire Gen Girls to have courage and confidence, and be leaders within our College community and beyond. This story demonstrates the particular qualities of a great leader - namely her faithful commitment and her integrity.

Marie Madeleine had a deep faith and was inspired by Jesus and the Gospel stories. She saw many injustices and worked tirelessly to put them right. The spiritual exercises of St Ignatius were very important to Marie Madeleine. Jesuit spirituality values discernment and decision making, and a prayerful consideration of possibilities and choices. Her spiritual advisors were mostly Jesuit priests and Marie Madeleine looked to them for guidance and inspiration in times of despair and uncertainly, particularly as a single mother and widower in the early 19th century.

Marie Madeleine desired to join the Society of Jesus, however she was denied because she was a female. This sparked further prayer and discernment for her. She was aware of her growing desire to dedicate her whole life to God and to the service of others. She became convinced that God was calling her to found an order of women who would take their inspiration from Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and the holy women of the gospels. She was determined that the society would take the name of Jesus and follow the Constitutions of the Jesuits.

Her petition to Rome, to establish the Religious Order, sparked much objection from the Jesuits - they did not want a female religious order using the name of Jesus. Fortunately, Marie Madeleine stood firm, with courage and confidence, and Rome approved the name of the Religious Order as the Society of Faithful Companions of Jesus.

For we women today, 200 years on, Marie Madeleine is an inspirational leader. She was ahead of her time and stayed true to her convictions.

With faith and integrity she established the Society of Faithful Companions of Jesus and the legacy she has left around the world is extraordinary.

Marie Madeleine has inspired the faith, courage and confidence of the many Gen Girls who have put themselves forward as leaders and role models.

Underpinning and flowing from Marie Madeleine’s vision that we all be faithful companions, she inspired the values of all FCJ schools – dignity, excellence, companionship, gentleness, hope and justice.

May we take the opportunity of the FCJ Bicentenary Year to acknowledge, thank and celebrate the blessings that we have received from Marie Madeleine d’Houët and all the Sisters, FCJ. These remarkable women have been an inspiration to us all as we continue to reap the benefits of their faith, vision, and courageous confidence.

COLLEGE COUNCIL MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF COLLEGE COUNCIL

Message from the Chair of College Council Kevin Frawley | Chair of College Council

In this our 130th Anniversary Year, it has been particularly pleasing to bear witness to so many remarkable achievements of our young women at Genazzano.

The College theme for 2019 was ‘Gifted with Companionship and Hope’, and as a community, we are fortunate to be able to benefit from the work and legacy of the FCJ Sisters and to see how their gifts of companionship and service to others inspire and empower generations of our graduates.

Signature College events in the latter half of the year, to name a few, have included: the Annual Music Concert, Genazzano Mothers’ Association - Bal du 130 Anniversaire, Outstanding Alumnae Award Presentation Evening, Genazzano Fathers’ Association Footy Finals Luncheon, Les Jeunes Artistes, Graduate Art Show, Celebration of Sport Evening, and the Year 12 Valedictory Mass & Presentation Evening. All of these events rely upon the passion, commitment and involvement of our teachers, parents and our daughters. They also reflect the diverse range of curricular and co-curricular activities, which together form the basis of a Genazzano FCJ College education.

One of the great privileges of leading the College Council is the opportunity to attest to the achievements of our students across the range of curricular and co-curricular activities. Amongst many things, we are pleased that our College Music and Performing Arts Programs continue to excel, with the diversity and strength of the Music Program evident at the Annual Music Concert at Hamer Hall. It was a wonderful night’s entertainment and a highlight of the year.

The College Sports Program also continues to expand and achieve great success in a wide range of sports on offer, whilst encouraging our students to embrace the benefits of a healthy mind and body. It is encouraging to see the increased participation in football and soccer, as well as our traditional strengths in netball, swimming and rowing. The recent Celebration of Sport Presentation Evening showcased the excellence of our students across a multitude of sports.

GENNARRATIONS MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF COLLEGE COUNCIL

We are fortunate to be able to benefit from the work and legacy of the FCJ Sisters and to see how their gifts of companionship and service to others inspire and empower generations of our graduates.

These, and other events, reflect the many different and important elements in the life of our College. Our graduating Class of 2019 is fortunate to have received not only an excellent education but to have been inspired by those who went before them; those whose strong values of companionship and faith have continued to inspire us all 130 years later. These sentiments were succinctly, and powerfully, expressed by Miss Prudence Halse, College Liturgy Prefect, in her address to the graduating class during the 2019 Valedictory Eucharist, which included the following observations: “It has been an honour for all of us to be a member of this cohort. We have come so far and yet have so much more we are still able to achieve. But it is essential that we remember in the coming weeks what is truly important. Yes, we understand the significance of VCE but we cannot forget the friendships we have made here. We have been reminded of the word companionship consistently this year, and it truly is a gift to us. I want to thank you all for everything.

This school, and every one of you, has helped make me who I am, and I know the same goes for each of you. Now our journey here is coming to an end, but we have much to take with us when we leave. It is important we remember that God will continue to guide us as he did the Apostles at Emmaus, and that we enter the world with the courage and confidence to face anything. Now, as we go beyond the gates, we go with the knowledge that we will always have each other to come back to, no matter where life takes us.”

In this spirit of companionship, College Council is committed to ensuring that Genazzano remains a broad based, non-selective Catholic girls’ school with a commitment to delivering strong educational outcomes for all our students, both academically and in a wide range of endeavours. To better support the delivery of our education programs, the first stage of implementation of our current Master Plan has now begun, with the renovation of our

Arts Studios. The first stage - four Arts Studios and a VCE art workspace - will be completed over the Christmas vacation period, in time for the 2020 school year. Stage Two, involving the Textiles, Media and Visual Communications Studios, is expected to begin at a similar time next year.

The College is also currently in the planning stages for a new, separate learning centre for our Year 5 and 6 girls. This will then provide an expanded, dedicated area for our Year 7 and 8 students on the top floor of our d’Houët building. We also propose to expand our Sports and Fitness Centre on the ground floor of the d’Houët building during the 2020 school year, in response to increased participation and demand from our students for these facilities.

The College Master Plan also anticipates a future upgrade to our Science and Technology areas.

I trust that these various initiatives will support and enhance the teaching and learning outcomes for our students in the years to come.

130th Anniversary of Genazzano Karen Jebb | Principal

Our College Vision extends across the following core attributes: a passion for life, a love of learning, and the courage and confidence to lead and serve others.

Companionship is also at the heart of this vision, and so for our 130th Anniversary Year, we chose the theme: Gifted with Companionship and Hope.

The following reading from St Paul’s Letter to the Colossians draws us deeply into the meaning of companionship and hope, and provides us with a road map for celebrating not only 130 years, but for looking towards our future years too.

Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.

And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.

And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one Body.

And be thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

We now have an enormous responsibility to write the pages of the next 130 years, ensuring with resoluteness that the FCJ charism and core values continue to guide us into the future.

Over the past 130 years, Genazzano has built its solid foundations on the same site in Kew in which it was established. However, the College has never stood still - it has evolved, changed and moved always responding to the needs of the time, in order to prepare the next generation of young women for the world they will need to embrace.

At the beginning of our history, Genazzano was entirely run by the Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus. The first Sisters, twelve of them in fact, courageously travelled to Australia to provide Catholic education for young girls. The College’s name was ‘Genazzano Convent’ and it was both a day and boarding school.

It is inconceivable to think that our College, which began in 1889, opened before women had the right to vote in Australia. This however, did not detract from the extraordinary education the College has provided for 130 years; instilling in each graduating young woman, the courage and confidence to take the FCJ values into their future, with optimism and faith.

Genazzano and its educators have persevered throughout the years, notably continuing to provide education during both World War I and II, the Great Depression, post-Vatican II and the closure of Vaucluse FCJ College. In fact, the College continued to flourish, and became a Company Limited by Guarantee in 1983 and is now managed by a board of directors known as the College Council.

More lay teachers and support staff were employed, and in 1993 the first lay Principal was appointed. Over the last few decades, there have been many changes of government and growing compliance requirements. The reliance on technology is ever increasing, and there are constant expectations that schools address the deficiencies of our society.

From one decade to the next, the College has evolved and is now very different to the convent established in 1889. However, one aspect has remained consistent, true and strong since its inception - and that is our core FCJ values and beautiful School Spirit. We now have an enormous responsibility to write the pages of the next 130 years, ensuring with resoluteness that the FCJ charism and core values continue to guide us into the future. With the FCJ Sisters as our constant inspiration and role models, this is a task we should all take on, with courage, honour and confidence in our faith.

During the mid-year break Genazzano members of staff, Donna Boyle, Helena Goldsmith, Renae Hill, Mary Jones, Catherine Murphy and myself participated in the International FCJ Pilgrimage for 2019.

We joined pilgrims from Australia, Canada, England, Myanmar, and Indonesia who came from a range of ministries and relationships with the Sisters, FCJ - education, companions in mission, and those working with the poor and needy. The dynamic and varied nature of the pilgrims was complemented by the four wonderful FCJ Sisters who led us on the pilgrimage: Sr Cornelia, Sr Anouska, Sr Lorenza and Sr Mary. These Sisters led us in the ‘Footsteps of Marie Madeleine’ and opened up our appreciation of Marie Madeleine’s vision.

Guided by the Sisters, we all came to the clear understanding that Marie Madeleine was an extraordinary woman a woman of deep faith, who prayed regularly for hours on end in order to discern God’s will for her.

At Amiens we visited St Acheul, the school where Marie Madeleine enrolled her son, Eugene, to the spiritual and intellectual care of the Jesuit Fathers. Here we visited the room Marie Madeleine was given, which had a window where she could look down upon her son as he was in the chapel for mass and prayer. This was Marie Madeleine as a loving mother yearning to be close to her son, but also a woman aware that God was calling her to embrace a different life; one where Eugene would not be at the centre. We walked to the site where on the Feast of the Sacred Heart in 1817, Marie Madeleine had the vision of Jesus speaking from the crucifix the words, “I thirst”, and how she discerned her life’s response to those words.

Guided by the Sisters, we all came to the clear understanding that Marie Madeleine was an extraordinary woman - a woman of deep faith, who prayed regularly for hours on end in order to discern God’s will for her. She was a woman who was gentle but persistent,

a sound administrator and educator who sought, with the Society of Sisters she founded, to give a practical response to the needs of her time and her discernment of what God was calling her to do.

Speaking for myself, and no doubt for other pilgrims, we gained a deeper insight into Marie Madeleine as a real person - as a mother, widow, Foundress - a woman of her time but also a woman beyond her time. This six-day experience has emphasised for me that we need to sit in the presence of God more often, to listen quietly to His words and discern where He wants us to go in our daily living. To discern the meaning of those words that Jesus spoke on the cross: “I thirst”, and to ask ourselves, “How am I actively and purposefully responding to what Jesus wants of us in our world today?”

Timor Leste Immersion Mia MacIsaac, Tulipa Rodriguez-Quin, Monique Cannatelli, Claudia Cococcia, Madeline Grave, Ivana Cugura, Anja Rozanic, Abigail Schlicht, Charlotte MacIsaac, Cleo Allsop, Alessia Kapakoulakis & Sofia Rossi | Year 10 Students

After endless days of collecting numerous donations and preparing for a life-altering experience, twelve Year 10 girls travelled alongside Mrs Dodds, Mrs Solowiej and Mr Linehan, to visit Timor Leste and live within its community and learn from the its culture.

For the first seven days, we stayed in a community in Laga with Father Roui, where we were immersed in the Timor Leste culture and way of life. Here we visited two primary schools Genazzano sponsors, Laraifanu and Bulguira, as well as two all-female orphanages where we formed life-long connections with the children. We also visited the local high school and helped the students practise their English in an interactive general conversation. For the last four days of our immersion, we travelled to the main city, Dilli, where we learnt about their tragic history and how they have been shaped as a country.

This was an extremely special and eyeopening experience for everyone who attended this immersion. We have come back more educated and formed deeper connections with our closest neighbouring country. This immersion showed us just how meaningful and important faith is in our

lives, especially for the Timorese people. We will never forget their beautiful faces, all the knowledge they gave us and the kindness and generosity they have shown us. Even though in our eyes we could only help them very little, they were extremely grateful and their reactions to the little we could give them showed us just how much our visit meant to them, regardless of what we brought.

This immersion taught us many crucial life lessons that we have taken home with us and we will continue to act with gratitude and acknowledge the opportunities we are given.

We recognise that we have been gifted with such a unique experience and are extremely grateful for all the special people we met along our journey. We were welcomed with open hearts into a community and a culture where the people’s happiness, gratefulness and love outweighs the minimal material objects they possess.

The Kimbereley Exchange Program teaches us that we are all woven as one one people and one family - together as part of God’s plan for creation.

This journey brings us together as friends who have continued to share a story for over 31 years. This year, four Year 10 students and two teachers travelled to Kununurra and slowly made their way to meet our long-time friends in the Gija community in Warmun; the Bunuba community in Fitzroy Crossing; the Yawuru community in Broome; the Karajarri, Kukatja, Walmajarri and Gooniyandi people in the community in Bidyadanga. We were greeted as trusted friends and blessed by the Elders throughout our journey, with the sincere prayer that we would travel safely across the vast land of the Kimberley.

We had the privilege of visiting and working in the Ngalangangpum School in Warmun and the La Grange school in Bidyadanga. These schools gave the students the opportunity to work side by side with the children and support them with their learning. This was a unique experience that earned the trust of these young children and enabled them to share their personal stories, hopes and dreams. We all heard stories that highlighted the brokenness that still exists in communities, but there was also a strong message of hope for the future.

We witnessed the strength of the Elders, in particular, the women who wanted a better life for their communities. The challenge for the Elders in Bidyadanga was to not allow alcohol in their community and to speak up to Government officials about the need for health care for their ageing population.

Many stories were shared in friendship and trust. During a time of quiet reflection, a mother shared her heartache about the loss of her recently deceased son. He had been in trouble with the law but wanted to get his life back on track, so he applied to join the Navy.

However, self-doubt crept in, then despair and finally depression.

Would he ever be accepted in the Navy? This young man died suddenly and missed the phone message - the Navy wanted him to come in to complete the paperwork for his enrolment... This amazing mother turned to her deep faith in God, with whom she believed would get her through the dark days ahead. We shared so many occasions whereby we witnessed this strong message of faith in God.

We need to continue to be a voice for equality, understanding, recognition, social justice and reconciliation.

Our group visited the Broome Regional Medical Service, the Dialysis Centre, the St. John of God Heritage Centre and shared a special healing time with the Stolen Generation. Uncle John Cox highlighted the value and importance of having an education and even though he was taken away from his family as a young child and brought up in the Beagle Bay Mission, the nuns and priests had given him an education and taught him skills that have allowed him to work and travel the world.

We were offered so many wonderful opportunities with those who had so little to share but what they had, they willingly shared with us.

Whether we were sitting around the campfire at night with the Elders, listening to Uncle Bill as he took us in his boat down Geike Gorge or hearing the story of a woman undergoing dialysis, we recognised the importance of the stories being told to us. We learnt to listen to the messages and stories that were spoken and we took the time to reflect on these when we returned home each night. The message of the Kimberley is one that stays with you forever; you know you cannot change things to suit what you think is right, according to your values and your way of life. You learn to value the importance of respecting the culture, story, family, identity and spirituality of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Kimberley Exchange Program also influences those we meet along the way. Recently, two of our St. Mary’s Host Sisters became runners up in the 2019 Kimberley Girl Program. This is not a beauty pageant but rather a program that instigates change in the personal and professional capacity of young Indigenous women to make positive life choices. How very proud were their 2017 Genazzano Host Sisters to see their beautiful friends forging great pathways in their lives!

Just like the many sunsets we saw, the true beauty and message of the sunset only comes after the sun has set, and if you wait patiently, only then will you see the sky in all its glory. The Kimberley teaches us to sit and listen and (when we stop and take the time) see the truth and beauty of this remarkable part of Australia. We have brought home with us the message that we need to continue to be a voice for equality, understanding, recognition, social justice and reconciliation.

This truly was the intention and vision of Sisters Rosemary Crowe, fcJ and Maryrose Dennehy, fcJ who initiated this remarkable program 31 years ago.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT VCE PREMIER’S AWARDS

VCE Premier’s Awards : A Culture of Excellence at Genazzano Lorna Beegan | Deputy Teacher: Learning and Teaching

Fundamental to our mission at Genazzano, is our commitment to delivering an excellent academic program for every student in our care, as we recognise the breadth and depth of talents and the levels of success in our school community.

In addition, essential to our FCJ Student Profile is the way our students model excellence through their wide-ranging learning journeys and numerous achievements. Every day at Genazzano we celebrate and reflect on both the small achievements to the most momentous, as we share our dynamic learning culture together.

It was with great pride that the College announced five students from the Class of 2018 as recipients of the 2018 Premier’s VCE Awards, recognising the top performing students in specific courses of study for their outstanding academic achievements in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

As we come to the end of 2019, we are confident our VCE cohort will once again do their College, their teachers, their families and themselves proud. As you walk through the halls of Genazzano, both our learning culture and our commitment to excellence is palpable.

We look forward to sharing more successes with our community as our students continue to excel in so many aspects of College life.

ELEANOR KIRKLAND

Eleanor Kirkland, the College Dux for 2018, received two Premier’s Study Awards for Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods. According to our Curriculum Leader – Mathematics, Mrs Carol Patterson, who taught Eleanor for both Mathematics subjects, the key to Eleanor’s success was her focus, determination and willingness to help others. “Eleanor did everything I suggested and kept asking for more work to complete in Year 12.” Keen to get involved in extra competitions and extension activities, she constantly challenged herself to try new things.

Of utmost importance, Mrs Patterson reflects, was Eleanor’s ability to learn from her mistakes and to not worry about things being perfect. “The mistakes she made influenced her to become more determined to improve her skills.”

GENNARRATIONS VCE PREMIER’S AWARDS

ELENA MURPHY

Elena Murphy received the Premier’s Award for Texts and Traditions, while in Year 11. Her teacher, Deputy Principal – Faith and Mission, Mr Charles Watt, describes Elena as an extroversive learner, one who is happy to make mistakes and still “presses on” learning from them. “Elena, always had the expected work done for each class and continually came with more questions,” he reports. Elena’s bright and happy demeanour meant she was an asset to each class and she willingly offered her assistance to help others.

MADELEINE VAN VELZEN & MIRANDA HOJOK

Students Madeleine Van Velzen and Miranda Hojok both studied Food Studies and their teacher, Mrs Karen Read, was not surprised the girls performed as well as they did. She remarks that, “Both girls were extremely passionate about Food Studies throughout their schooling.

They embraced all aspects of the subject in terms of both its practical and theoretical content.”

In addition, choosing subjects that complement one another may have been a contributing factor, as both girls studied predominantly Mathematics and Science subjects.

For Madeleine, her key quality was her preparation - before each lesson she would familiarise herself with the content so that she could maximise the opportunity to learn through asking questions and contributing to discussion effectively and efficiently.

For Miranda, instrumental to her success, according to Mrs Read, was her practice. Miranda was always eager to complete a practice examination and ask questions for clarification, actively seeking feedback. Furthermore, her aptitude for critical thinking and willingness to contribute to class discussion contributed to her success.

BIANCA DIMATTINA

At Genazzano, there are opportunities to study a VCE VET Pathway and Bianca DiMattina was awarded the Premier’s Award for Dance through AusDance Victoria. According to her Homeroom teacher, Ms Mary Fahey, “Bianca is totally immersed in Dance. She told me she danced out of her mother’s womb when she was born.” Bianca is generous with her love of dance and choreographed all the d’Houët House Dances and the last day of Year 12 celebrations, as well as dancing at ACRATH. We have no doubt that Bianca will one day own her own dance studio.

International Sporting Tour Sophie King, Elouise Barlow and Emma O’Keefe | Year 11 Boarders & 2019 IST Members

This year marked the eleventh edition of the International Sporting Tour, a tradition that began in 1995 and offers students an opportunity to immerse themselves in the different cultures of our FCJ sister schools in Europe, whilst engaging in some amazing sporting experiences.

As we travelled through Ireland, England and France, we created very close bonds with each other and constantly improved our own teamwork and tactics, whilst learning about the important role sport has in bringing communities together.

On the last day of Term 3, we began our two week adventure of Europe. For several it was a first trip overseas, and for most it was simply a challenge of how to get through border security at the airport or not to leave our passports on shuttle trains in Dubai.

In our 13 days in Europe we visited five FCJ schools; • FCJ Bunclody, Wexford, Ireland • Laurel Hill FCJ, Limerick, Ireland • Maria Fidellis FCJ, London, England • Gumley Huse FCJ, London, England • Notre Dame FCJ, Paris, France

Our sporting opportunities at these FCJ schools varied; • Netball Tournaments • Gaelic Football Games • Hurling and Camogie Lessons • Irish Dancing Classes • Volleyball Matches • Netball and Australian Football Coaching • Physical Education Classes To complement the school sporting experiences we engaged in daily classes, choir practices, prayer services, lunchtime games and some particularly memorable Irish history and poetry lessons. We created genuine relationships with our FCJ friends and shared stories of similarities and differences between our own school environments.

In what can only be described as an action packed fortnight, other highlights included tours of some amazing sporting venues: Wimbeldon Tennis Club, Lords Cricket Ground and Croke Park, Dublin.

Markets, Buckingham Palace, Portobello Road, Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triumph and Sacre Coeur Basilica. We enjoyed some very special experiences, such as: rowing a four on the River Thames; bicycle touring through London; riding the London Eye; watching the Lion King on West End; and celebrating an Eiffel Tower night light show.

An innovative addition to this edition of the tour, our group spent two educational nights in the Elite Athlete Hotel at Loughborough University. Here we all completed a netball master class with international player, Sam May, and were given an insight into the daily life of an elite athlete as we ate, slept and trained where the UK’s best sports stars are preparing daily for the Tokyo Olympics.

Thank you to Mr. Wall for his organisation, and Ms Farley and Ms Bourke for their support and supervision abroad. We are all very grateful to have experienced such an incredible International Sporting Tour for 2019!

Celebration of Sport Nick Wall | Director of Sport

2019 saw endless highlights in the pool and on the river, track, field, courts and fields.

Term 1 commenced with Genazzano hosting the GSV Sport Leaders Breakfast for the first time in the event’s 19 year history.

A successful Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta was highlighted by an incredible Senior Double Scull victory from Odette Lynch and Jemima Dwyer, amongst four Genazzano medals. Our Swim Team took a Division 2 premiership and won the Centenary Swim Meet, whilst our Senior Triathlon team of Grace Greenwood, Kate Vickers and Julie Fitt won the teams’ race at the GSV Championship. In GSV weekly sport our best performed team was the Junior B Indoor Cricket Team that won the premiership.

Term 2 saw our strong netball tradition continue with most teams making finals and three of our Intermediate and Senior GSV teams winning premierships. Our Cross Country Squad won the GSV Division 2 premiership and our U18 all-stars of Madeline Grave, Ruby Atkin, Sophia Tedesco and Alissa Ramsdale won bronze at the Victorian Cross Country Championships. Two Australian Football teams won their zones, whilst our Year 5 & 6 footy girls won their SSV District Carnival.

Term 3 lay witness to one of the individual highlights of 2019; Bridget Henry winning gold in the Victorian Championship Division 1 Skier Cross at Mt Buller. Our Intermediate Soccer Team took a GSV title, whilst the fine netball form continued with nine Saturday Netball grand finalists and two premiership titles at Macleay Park.

You would expect Term 4 to have eased off after such a hectic year, but the success continued with our SSV Basketball Team winning their District Carnival, 1500m runners Alissa Ramsdale and Julie medalling at the Victorian Track and Field Championships and a plethora of Victorian representatives being selected across a range of sports.

Celebration of Sport On Tuesday 15 October, our annual Celebration of Sport evening acknowledged all of these team successes plus, most importantly, the individual contribution of each and every Genazzano girl to our Sporting Program. The outstanding leadership, performances and years of service by some very special individual athletes, coaches and umpires were also recognised throughout the evening.

Hosted with professionalism by our 2019 Sport Captains, Bridgette Fox and Eleanor MacIsaac, a special highlight was their interview with Australian Netball Diamond, Kelsey Brown, and AFLW rising star, Maddie Shevlin. The motivational yet practical advice provided around balancing sport and study, when to specify in one sport, and the growth of women’s sport in this professional era was certainly inspiring for all of our young sportswomen in the audience.

ELC EARLY LEARNING CENTRE

Early Learning Centre Alison Lucas | Director – Early Learning Centre How fortunate the ELC children are to be part of the Genazzano community, celebrating the College’s 130 year history and embracing the school theme, Gifted with Companionship and Hope.

Our wonderful parent and grandparent community have participated in events within the classroom, sharing their children’s love of learning.

At each event they have shared their hopes for their children’s future with Messages of Hope to read on our community tree in the Piazza.

The Eugene children were gifted with hope for people less fortunate than themselves after a discussion from a child who shared that, “some people don’t have a home to live in”. This linked to the picture story book of Storm Boy that the children had read earlier in the year and caring each day for their new companion friend, Mr. Percival the toy pelican. The children collected long life milk for St Mary’s House and learned how the donated milk would support the making of breakfast for those who do not have a home to live in or money to buy themselves breakfast.

The Gigi room children have been researching, ‘What can you see that is living and growing in nature?’. The nature inquiry inspired the children to be gifted with hope for the environment and as a community to respect the grounds on which they play and learn in. The children created a prayer card to read to their companions, expressing how they can care for the environment and how grateful they are for the world they live in.

Dear God, I hope that we can leave trees the way they are for the koalas, bats and birds to live in. We need to leave flowers outside for the bees to collect pollen and dirt for bugs to make the plants grow. - Isabel I hope that we don’t take Nature away because it’s the animal’s home. I am grateful that we have animals and food. We need to be respectful of their homes. - Milana I hope that we keep bugs safe by planting more trees and not cutting them down. - James I hope that we don’t cut down the trees where the baby birds are.

We need to leave the bees alone. - Henry Thank you for the trees. They give us oxygen so we can breathe and food and a home for the birds. - Jeremy I hope the birds keep singing, because they are happy in nature.

Junior School Student Achievements Mary Jones | Head of Junior School Term 3 in the Junior School saw amazing achievements from our students. Our girls are maturing and growing into confident young women who care about the world in which they live and seek to make it a better place. It has been wonderful to witness our students reaching out and putting themselves forward to bring a message of optimism to a world that certainly needs it. Below are some inspiring stories of our Year 6 students and their commitment to a world where companionship and hope are experienced by all.

The #ihaveyourback poster competition was a Victoria-wide poster competition for all students under 18 years of age. In poster form, we had to project a message about standing up to bullies. Mine was, ‘Watching might make you feel good, but acting will make you feel better.’ The reason I entered this competition was to raise awareness about bullying, and that if you see someone getting bullied, don’t just watch, but act.

My poster was the winning one and is being circulated in every Victorian school. On the 12th of August, my parents and I went to the MCG to collect my award. I am so grateful to my Homeroom teacher Ms McNamara for making me aware of the competition.

The Fred Hollows Humanitarian Award recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in their community. It celebrates students who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives, just as Fred did. Jocelyn Nichol-Jordan was nominated for this award as she embodies the values of compassion, integrity and kindness in all she does. An example of this is her commitment to Mini Vinnies and fundraising money to educate children in developing countries. She has organised raffles and raised awareness amongst her peers of the inequity in access to education.

In the classroom, she is always considerate in giving of her time and assisting others in need. Jocelyn was recognised and received an award at the Melbourne Town Hall in November.

This year, I entered the Whitlam Institute ‘What Matters’ Writing Competition.

Whitlam Institute was inspired by Gough Whitlam, a famous Prime Minister who heard everyone’s voice. The writing competition gives children in Years 5 - 12 a chance to voice what really matters to them. I entered this competition because I wanted to have a say.

My message was to help stop climate change because that is a big issue in our society today. I wrote about a future where our planet was destroyed. I believe that if we all help out and work together, we can make a difference to our planet. I was one of the 30 finalists out of 4,500 students around Australia for Years 5 and 6, which was a great accomplishment for me.

Junior Lord Mayor Competition Each year, the City of Melbourne hosts the Junior Lord Mayor competition for young people aged 10-13, and gives them the amazing opportunity to become the Junior Lord Mayor of Melbourne for 12 months.

Jacqui O’Donnell | Year 6A This year, I was lucky enough to be selected as a finalist in this competition and I was given the opportunity to travel to Melbourne Town Hall and participate in a judging ceremony run by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp. This was an amazing experience!

Rachel Arnold | Year 6B I entered because I felt that it was a good opportunity to improve my public speaking skills. In my entry form I wrote about what I care about and what I love in Melbourne. I chose to discuss homelessness as an issue. Homelessness is affecting Melbourne because many people live without a home or safe shelter. My main message was to encourage people to help the homeless out of their situation and find a safe place to live. I think I went well even though I didn’t win. Becoming a finalist in the final seven is still a really good effort. I was practising my speech for days and when we went to the Melbourne Town Hall I felt very prepared. I would one hundred percent recommend this challenge for anyone. It helps to build confidence and you learn a lot about the wonderful city we live in.

Our Gen Girl, Chloe Amalfi, was the winner of this contest for 2018, and seeing her hold this title really encouraged us to put our names forward and enter. I chose to enter because I believed that I could make a positive difference within Melbourne and help those who need it. One of the main questions of the competition was, ‘What is an issue that you are passionate about, and how would you make a difference in Melbourne?’ Many of the Year 6’s had great ideas about this question. My idea was to give greater assistance to vulnerable young people sleeping rough on the streets and provide them with a one-on-one support system and early intervention strategy. One of my solutions was to host a ‘Junior Lord Mayor’s Appeal’ that is modelled on the Good Friday Appeal, which would raise money for those most in need, and another was to create a social media app enabling them to access all the necessary services that they require.

In the ceremony at Melbourne Town Hall, we were asked to talk about our ideas for Melbourne in front of a panel of judges who then decided which one of the 6 finalists was to be titled ‘Junior Lord Mayor.’ Although I didn’t win, as a finalist I was still invited to participate in events like Melbourne Day, the Moomba parade and other ‘Mayoral Duties’.

My Statement to Parliament Isabella Schwarze | Year 6A ‘My Statement to Parliament’ was a Victoria-wide competition focusing on what we would like to say if we were a Member of Parliament. It had to be recorded in a 90 second video.

“What would I say if I was an MP?”, I wondered. I had been watching the news and I kept hearing “another woman has been killed...” I realised that a change needed to happen.

It was an issue I felt very strongly about and I think my passion came across in the video.

I was absolutely thrilled when I found out I had won the Year 5-6 category. I couldn’t believe it! I won $500 for myself and $1,000 for school, as well as two glass trophies!

It was a very proud day.

Our Alumnae & Friends Playgroup is successfully running into its fourth year here at Genazzano!

We know we offer something very special at playgroup, as we see our families returning with their younger children to enjoy weekly playdates. It is so lovely to see the children excited to spend time with their friends when they arrive, as well as scan the room to see what they have to play with every week!

What families like most is the friendship, fun and activities. No two weeks are the same; children experience store bought toys alongside meaningful homemade activities. There is always sensory play, craft, painting, construction, role-play, fine motor and gross motor activities, and it all concludes with a snack, group time and bubbles!

The supported playgroup at Genazzano is open to children aged six months - three years. It operates out of the Grange Hill Hall each Tuesday morning from 9.15am - 10.45am during term.

BOARDING CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY

Celebrating Our Diversity Yeen Hortle | Boarding Supervisor

Hopetoun Hall celebrated its first ever Diversity Day on Tuesday 3 September, 2019. We coined the debut theme for the event, ‘One House – Many Cultures: Celebrating Our Diversity’.

This momentous celebration coincided with Genazzano’s 130th Anniversary Year and the two events encapsulated the themes of companionship and hope, highlighting the wonderful diversity that exists within the College and the Boarding House.

At Hopetoun Hall, we have a community of girls that have come from all over the world; from country Victoria and the Tiwi Islands (off the coast of the Northern Territory), to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Brunei. Diversity Day was about bringing everyone together to celebrate our different gifts, ambitions and talents. We wanted to celebrate the diversity of every Boarders’ culture and beliefs, and show that we are united in both our humanity and our striving to find purpose and meaning in our lives. This in turn would lead to us all to understand one other; our community, our world and our time on this planet.

The event began with gathering all the girls in the Boarding House and handing out special t-shirts which had our theme logo, designed

by Meimi Liu, Boarding Prefect. The occasion began with a prayer from Bridget Henry, and Bridgette Fox lighting the candle, followed by Meimi Liu acknowledging the custodians of the land.

Then Chloe Miller, Boarding Captain, who was the MC for the evening, led us through a discussion on the different cultures within our group.

We learnt about Australian and Indigenous culture (namely those traditions from the Tiwi Islands) and about different Asian cultures.

Chloe thanked all those involved in the discussion, and to all for listening with such respect. It was now time to start the activities!

We started with a short video clip which expressed beautifully the meaning of the word ‘diversity’. Next we viewed another video which showed Bridget Henry interviewing Indigenous Boarder Simone Fernando, and it included stunning shots of Simone’s beautiful lifestyle at her home of the Tiwi Islands.

GENNARRATIONS CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY

Next we attempted rock painting and were informed of its significance and relevance to the Indigenous peoples. Rock art dates back over 60,000 years and was used for a number of reasons, including special rituals and ceremonies. The Boarders’ rock art results were splendid, with some great patterns being achieved.

We followed on with learning about Asian cultures, as Meimi Liu presented a video and talk on the beginnings of the Bubble Tea trend, which originated in Taiwan. There are many variations and it has now spread to many parts of the world, including Australia.

Meimi brought in some bubble tea for the girls to sample.

Joan Shi then presented us with a video showing Chinese weddings, displaying the different customs which included: the wearing of different wedding costumes, the groom having to perform and overcome obstacles when collecting his bride, and tea drinking ceremonies. The highlight was Andie Millie modelling a traditional Chinese wedding dress.

After this presentation, we started on Australian cultural traditions, with Genevieve Bush and Kate Vickers teaching the girls how to bake lamingtons. Much fun and hilarity ensued, and, of course, the lamingtons were devoured heartily! Next Bridgette Fox, Niamh Kilgariff and Simone Fernando showed the girls some all important AFL hand-balling skills. Zeta Kelly, Micky Kennedy and Mia Goodison led the girls in a ‘Nutbush’ line dance, explaining that although the song is American (‘Nutbush City Limits’ sung by Tina Turner), Australians popularised the line dancing of it and it became quite the phenomenon.

Following the dancing the girls were ready for their special Yum Cha dinner! Elvina Choi and Joie Zhuang introduced a powerpoint on YumCha - but in quiz form - which had the girls in hysterics!

It was a most successful Diversity Day and we look forward to the event again next year!

It is remarkable to watch what has been achieved by these young, aspiring musicians.

Our Annual Music Concert at Hamer Hall was a spectacular event. Prior to the commencement of the concert, a 200-voice choir led the Genazzano Community in song and prayer singing, ‘Companions on the Journey’. This particular song has been sung throughout our very significant 130th year, as it so beautifully serves to reflect our 2019 College theme, ‘Gifted with Companionship & Hope’. Our Choirs, Bands, Instrumental Ensembles and Symphony Orchestra performed a wide range of repertoire to a most appreciative audience.

The Music Department presented another 12 concerts after our Annual Music Concert. Our Soloist and Instrumental Concerts showcased the outstanding talent that is being nurtured by our dedicated Music Staff.

The ‘Stringout’ Concert is always a highlight on our Events Calendar. It was a beautifully prepared concert and very well attended.

Our Evening of Jazz and Contemporary Music was also a fantastic celebration, showcasing 80 young musicians performing in our prizewinning bands.

The 5/6 Instrumental Program Concert was inspiring. It is remarkable to watch what has been achieved by these young, aspiring musicians, many of whom have taken up learning their instrument at the beginning of this year.

Our Christmas Concert was a beautiful evening, thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. The concert was a perfect way to enjoy companionship, share our musical gifts and demonstrate the love and hope we share as a faith-filled community.

Head of Woodwind Mandy Lyle Interviewed by Ella McEvoy | Woodwind Student

What does your role entail and when did you join the Genazzano Music Department?

As the Head of Woodwind, I have a varied role. I am the leader of the team of Woodwind staff; I oversee the musical welfare and development of Genazzano Woodwind students; and I teach flute students from Year 4 to 12, preparing them for AMEB exams, VCE exams, concerts, school performances and competitions. I direct the flute students in several flute ensembles according to their level, which perform and compete at College concerts and competitions. I also teach flute to the beginner Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 students in the Instrumental Programs at the College.

I first began teaching the flute part time at Genazzano in 1996 when my youngest son had just turned one. I now work 4 days per week as a member of the Music staff.

How does Music at Genazzano provide the gift of Companionship and Hope?

At Genazzano, we adhere to the following values of, “Guiding the education of our Music students by nurturing them individually and collectively. We seek to bring the best out of our students by working alongside them. We inspire Music students to see that all can learn.

We aspire to the very best possible planned and organic learning and developmental outcomes for students.” As a flute teacher it is wonderful to nurture the development and musical growth of each student to their own individual needs; a teaching relationship that can continue for several years.

Are you also an accomplished musician outside of your role at the College?

I am a professional flautist and have played for many years since my university days in various orchestras and ensembles. I am passionate about flute ensembles and currently perform with the Victorian Flute Ensemble. This ensemble is a small group of flautists who rehearse and give concerts regularly throughout the year. We recently performed at the Australian Flute Convention in Sydney, which was extremely exciting, especially as some of the featured international flautists played alongside us during our concert.

How have you seen the Music Department evolve at the College?

Throughout my 23 years teaching at Genazzano (firstly under the directorship of Mary Donoghue) I have witnessed a huge growth in the Music Department. Back in 1996, the Music Department was situated on the ground floor of the Wardell Building (where the current staff room is). I remember teaching in the Stanislaw Room when there weren’t enough rooms for us to give lessons in and I now realise what a privilege it was teaching in such a beautiful and historic room.

Can you share your favourite teaching memory?

I have so many wonderful memories of Genazzano students over the years. I have been extremely fortunate to be able to teach so many incredible students who have all given me so much pleasure in their achievements and their musical development, from total beginners to advanced levels.

What is your favourite song and who is your favourite musician?

I love both listening to live concerts and playing music. Some of my favourites are: the Adagio for Strings in G Minor by Tomaso Albinoni (don’t tell Mr Kopke but I adore listening to classical string ensembles and the gorgeous rich tones that they make); the Widor Organ Toccata which was played at my wedding; and the Elgar Cello Concerto 2nd movement which I studied in Year 12 History and Literature of Music.

My favourite musician is Sir James Galway. An amazing and gifted Irish flautist who was inspirational to me. I attended his summer school masterclass in Weggis Switzerland in the early 1990s and all of his concerts in Melbourne. He was instrumental in making the flute such a popular instrument today.

When did you start learning the flute and what led you to become a music teacher?

I adored playing the descant recorder so naturally my parents thought that I would enjoy learning the flute. Dad was an excellent violinist and music was extremely important to him. I began learning the wooden fife in Grade 6 and then progressed to the flute in Form 1 (Year 7).

I loved my first flute teacher and I took to the flute like a duck to water and couldn’t put it down. I studied Music Performance and Music Education at the University of Melbourne and began teaching both privately and at schools. Teaching flute quickly became a passion for me and working with students of all ages an extremely rewarding and inspiring career.

What is your role and when did you join the Genazzano Music Department?

I am the Head of Brass and also teach classroom music. I started at Genazzano in January 2018.

How does Music at Genazzano provide the gift of Companionship and Hope?

Playing in an ensemble is all about companionship because you have to bring your best every day and support everyone else to be their best. It represents hope because nothing in music is ever perfect and no human beings are ever perfect, but we have hope in the future that we’ll improve, so we work towards that future.

Are you also an accomplished musician outside of your role at the College?

I have played professionally outside of Genazzano as a soloist and I am in many ensembles.

How have you seen the Music Department evolve at the College?

I personally haven’t been here long enough to see the College evolve but I have seen my relationships with colleagues and students grow and strengthen throughout these past two years.

Can you share your favourite teaching memory?

My favourite teaching memory is when a student suddenly understands - like a flash of lightning - an instrument that they struggled with before. My other favourite thing is seeing those students that have worked so hard get to perform, because you see the results of their hard work.

What is your favourite song and who is your favourite musician and why?

I love Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony’ because it is intense, beautiful and majestic. My favourite band is Snarky Puppy because their music is really creative, exciting and complex - with a bop to it.

What were your roles like prior to becoming Head of Brass at Genazzano and how do they compare?

Immediately before this role, I taught brass at many different schools.

But I really like it here at Genazzano because I get to see students every day and build relationships with them. One of the most interesting things in my past is that I used to be a dog trainer, which I think has actually helped me with my teaching career because it’s still about figuring out what someone needs to do and how I can help them achieve that.

What is your role and when did you join the Genazzano Music Department?

I joined the Genazzano Music Department nearly 30 years ago and have been in my current role as Head of Jazz and Contemporary Music for the past 10 years.

How does Music at Genazzano provide the Gift of Companionship and Hope?

I believe Music at Genazzano provides the gift of Companionship and Hope for our musicians each and every time they walk through the Madeleine Centre doors. Having the opportunity to learn an instrument and become a member of an ensemble comes with so many rewards. Setting goals for yourself, strengthening bonds with others, supporting each other to achieve the very best possible

ensemble performance has seen a strong sense of belonging and community develop over the years. Hope and Companionship are integral to learning music!

Are you also an accomplished musician outside of your role at the College?

I was fortunate to be introduced to Big Band music early on in my musical journey and have enjoyed performing as a professional musician in this area for many years. Playing in a Big Band is just the best fun and is a great way to travel and play with amazing musicians!

How have you seen the Music Department evolve at the College?

I have seen the Genazzano Music Department grow significantly over the years. The range of instruments on offer to learn and the type of ensembles available to students has flourished. Amazing opportunities such as our International Music Tour and participation in Generations in Jazz are just two of the many opportunities that our young musicians can become involved with.

Can you share your favourite teaching memory?

Every time one of my students walks off the stage with a smile on her face - that provides me with wonderful teaching memories.

What is your favourite song and who is your favourite musician and why? ‘We Are Family’ by Sister Sledge because it sends such a positive message and is great to dance to! My favourite musician of all time is Cannonball Adderley. He was an amazing jazz saxophonist in the 1950s and 1960s who had the best alto saxophone sound in the business.

What is it like for you to see your students grow up to be amazing musicians, and how would you like them to leave Genazzano, thinking and feeling about their musical experience?

It is truly a privilege to witness the point at which a student realises she is an amazing musician. I hope that as each student finishes her time with us at Genazzano, she leaves with a life-long love of music, a sense of pride in having committed to learning a skill for so many years and the knowledge that she has inspired future generations of musicians at Genazzano to follow her lead.

Head of Percussion Ryan McCluskey Interview by Joy Lau | Percussion Student

What is your role and when did you join the Genazzano Music Department?

My role in the Music Department is Head of Percussion, which involves giving lessons and taking ensembles that are focused mainly on percussion, as well as servicing the ensembles with the appropriate percussion students. I joined Genazzano in 2004, which was when Mary Donoghue was Head of Music. I went for the interview and started working just one afternoon a week where gradually things grew and in 2011 I was put on permanent staff, which was fantastic.

How does Music at Genazzano provide the gift of Companionship and Hope?

I feel like music brings people together on so many levels, which can be seen in the way ensembles bring students together, especially across different year levels. The companionship that the students show to each other through developing, learning and growing together is really significant, as often the older students can inspire the younger ones and hopefully they can learn a lot from them. Also in a broader sense, the gift of music not only brings the people who are in the ensembles together, but also the people who listen to them.

Music is the colour of the world; it’s so uplifting, emotive and inspiring to so many people. Hopefully music at Genazzano is a source of inspiration and hope to the girls involved and anyone who hears our ensembles perform.

Are you also an accomplished musician outside of your role at the College?

I do perform outside of the College and I’ve done lots of different types of performances over the years; from orchestras and musical theatre, to rock and jazz bands. Currently I do a lot of drum kit performing at events, functions and weddings. I like to think I am an accomplished musician but the thing about being a musician is that you’re always evolving and improving, so I hope to continue improving as a musician, as well as a teacher.

How have you seen the Music Department evolve at the College?

One of the big changes was the building of the Madeleine Centre, which saw a significant improvement in the way in which the department has been able to grow, in both the amount of music staff and the ensembles we can offer. There used to be just one orchestra and one band, now we have various young, intermediate and senior ensembles for lots of different instrumental sections, so it has certainly grown significantly since I’ve been here.

Can you share your favourite teaching memory?

I do fondly remember different ensemble groups and witnessing how enjoyable it is for a group of students to come through together after performing with one another for 4-5 years. I also really enjoy when I have students that reach a high level in terms of their VCE, that’s always very satisfying.

What is your favourite song and who is your favourite musician and why?

It’s so hard to pick one song! I’ll have to go with ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’ by Bobby McFerrin as my favourite song. As for a musician, well there are so many that I admire and listen to, I couldn’t begin to list them all. But seeing as I am a percussion teacher some of my favourite percussionists are Stuart Copeland from The Police and John Bonham from Led Zeppelin, that’s just to name a few (I could go on for hours, there’s so many I look up to!).

Why would you recommend learning a musical instrument, in particular percussion?

I would highly recommend learning a musical instrument to anyone!

It doesn’t matter what instrument it is; I believe the dedication, concentration and brain power required to learn an instrument is beneficial on many levels, whether they become a musician in their adult life or not. Percussion wise, it’s fun - you get to hit stuff! I think what is appealing to a lot of students who do percussion is that is appears quite straightforward in its initial sense; you have a stick, mallet or hammer and you strike an instrument with it. Obviously it’s not as easy as that, there are many complexities to the instruments, but certainly there is a primal element to it, which can definitely appeal to students.

MUSIC JUNIOR SCHOOL MUSICAL

Honk! Jr Musical Bianca Farley | Health, Physical Education & Drama Teacher

Honk! Jr is a delightful adaptation of the beloved Ugly Duckling fable and a heartwarming story about acceptance, self-discovery and a celebration of what makes each of us different. This Junior School Musical was performed by our joyous and enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 cohort – all with unique talents, skills and personalities to bring forth.

The students diligently worked with one another to fully immerse themselves in the production process - the collaboration was outstanding.

Our Year 5 students took part in several group dance numbers and brought immense energy to their scenes. The Year 6 students relished the challenge of embodying the anthropomorphic farmyard characters, auditioning for such roles earlier in the year.

They participated in class workshops to unpack character traits and refine dramatic skills of projection, articulation, timing and physicality. The students diligently worked with one another to fully immerse themselves in the production process - the collaboration was outstanding.

As a popular form of theatric performance, Honk! Jr certainly enlivened the genre of Musical Theatre. The combination of singing, spoken dialogue, acting and dance allowed for an engaging yet educational experience for every student. During music lessons the girls learned the complex musical score before accompanying this with a range of choreographed dance sequences.

From box steps to tableaux, jazz kicks and pirouettes, the students’ personalities (and never depleting energy stores) shone through during every rehearsal and performance!

The cast took to the stage for three exciting performances, inclusive of a matinĂŠe which delighted and entertained local primary school students.

Audiences commented on the sparkling wit, unique charm and touching storyline that had them riding a wave of emotions and bopping along to the memorable score.

It takes a supportive staff body and a dedicated and talented production team to provide this opportunity for our girls. The cast embraced the Honk! Jr journey for what it was; starting out as innocent ducklings and transforming into adequate young performers ready to embrace the dynamic Performing Arts sector that awaits them here at Genazzano.

The hayride down to the barnyard and back was a fabulous one indeed. One that we hope ignites a newfound love for performing; inspires our students to continue to push themselves outside of their comfort zone; and of course, one that reminds each of them to look inside and celebrate what makes each of them different!

The Creative Arts Department Embarks on a New & Exciting Facility Upgrade Joanne Saville | Curriculum Leader - Creative Arts

The theme of this years’ Graduate Art show, ‘Nuovo’, represents the exciting times ahead for Visual Arts at the College. We are in the midst of renovations as builders develop Stage 1 of a significant upgrade to the Visual Arts learning spaces.

The Graduate Art Show was a great success and was opened

by Alumna, Georgina Bendall (2010), who spoke of her career highlights as a graphic designer. Student work once again demonstrated the skill and creativity of our cohort across all areas of the Creative Arts. Congratulations to both Madalene Craig and Pippa Lukaitis who won awards at the show - the Art Acquisition Award and Max Emmins Photography Award respectively.

Genazzano has had another successful year at the Royal Melbourne Show, winning the Janice Gray Memorial Trophy for the sixth year in a row. This award recognises the most successful school, and with 17 first places, 19 second places, 13 third places, four VHC, and one HC across a number of categories and age groups we were very pleased with the results. Congratulations to Mrs Katrina WheatonPenniall who won the ‘Speed the Plough’ Award in recognition of distinguished service and extraordinary contribution to the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria. Katrina has been a committee member of the Arts, Craft & Cookery board since 2013.

Since becoming a qualified teacher in 2007, Katrina began entering student works from her former school, Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. In 2009, she was responsible for co-ordinating over 100 entries - resulting in the school winning the Janice Gray Memorial Trophy for The Most Successful School. Over the past 10 years and across two schools (Caroline Chisholm Catholic College and Genazzano FCJ College), Katrina has been responsible for the planning and teaching of hundreds of students, resulting in winning the Janice Gray memorial trophy in successive years.

Les Jeunes Artistes, the ELC to Year 6 Art Show, was another highlight of the semester. Students across all year levels of the Junior School had their work on display. Well done to Annabella Murphy (Year 2) who won the Sister Maryrose Dennehy Art Encouragement Award, and Gabrielle Kobayashi-Walsh (Year 5A) who won the Mother Gerda Prytz Award for Excellence in Art.

We look forward to 2020 and our new art spaces with anticipation and excitement.

FEATURE 2019 OUTSTANDING ALUMNA AWARD

2019 Outstanding Alumna Rebecca Daniher (2008) Kevin Frawley | Chair of College Council

For over 25 years, Genazzano has sought nominations from the College community for the presentation of this award to an Alumna who has demonstrated personal achievement and, most importantly, service to others. The Outstanding Alumna Award has previously been presented to many outstanding Alumnae, and Rebecca (Bec) Daniher is no exception.

Throughout her time at Genazzano, Bec was known for her feats in the sporting arena, representing the school in GSV netball, and being part of the First Senior Boat Crew, who took out the Head of School Girls and Nationals in her final year of school. The Daniher family have had a long association with Genazzano. Bec’s sister Lauren was also a Gen Girl, having graduated in 2004, and her mother Jan, who was on staff, was instrumental in the development of the Saturday Netball Program.

After graduating from Genazzano in 2008, Bec went on to represent Victoria in both Junior and Senior level rowing, winning two Queen’s Cups during her time. She had the honour of being selected to represent Australia, culminating in the World Championships in 2013

in South Korea. Her rowing success was honoured by Genazzano, with a rowing squad now named after her.

Bec then completed a Bachelor of Business at RMIT and went on to pursue a career in accountancy, working as an accountant for several years. During this time, Bec’s family were faced with the difficult news that her father and much beloved AFL personality and former player/coach, Neale Daniher, had been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease. The disease is known to be cruel and leave sufferers an average of 27 months to live, with no known cure or treatment.

Adversity reveals much about a person’s character. In response, Bec decided to make the change from accountancy to the not-for-profit sector and took the opportunity to work alongside her Dad to take up the fight against MND.

GENNARRATIONS 2019 OUTSTANDING ALUMNA AWARD

Our Award Nomination Committee was therefore delighted and privileged to receive Bec Daniher’s nomination, and I would like to share with you the thoughts provided by Sr Helen Buckley, fcJ at that time.

Bec is undoubtedly an inspiration for all Genazzano students and our College community, who can see from her shining example that having the courage and confidence in a time of adversity, is compatible with a successful and fulfilling career in philanthropy.

FightMND is famed for the Big Freeze at the G, an event which has become a highlight on both the AFL and Melbourne major events calendars. Via the Big Freeze, Daniher’s Drive (the charity car rally which raises awareness in Australia’s countryside for 4 days each October), and a wealth of other fundraising, Bec and the team at FightMND have been able to raise over $40 million, and to date have contributed $28.8 million to clinical trials and research. The Big Freeze beanies, which have become a major fundraising contributor, was an initiative of Bec’s.

Bec is now the Campaign Director for FightMND and plays an instrumental role in the organisation, heading up both major fundraising campaigns, as well as being an ambassador for FightMND. Jamie Howden, CEO of Fight MND, describes Bec as having a unique combination of passion, drive and professionalism. This is complemented by great empathy for others and the capacity to work equally well with all people from all different parts of society.

“Rebecca is well known to all of us for her very public image as she stands by her father Neale in their hard work to find a cure for MIND. Her expertise in campaign management and fund raising are amazing. She obviously could have pursued a successful career in Accountancy but instead has stood by her father’s side to raise millions of dollars to find a cure for this insidious illness. My first contact with a person suffering from MND was the late Father Geoffrey King SJ, who died from MND in 2015. Geoff was one of the Jesuit’s most brilliant men and his positive outlook in dealing with his illness was remarkable.

At the same time, he suffered enormously as do all sufferers of MND. As a friend of Geoff’s, I am very impressed with the whole FightMND movement. What is wonderful is the way Bec and her family have been able to involve so many people in fundraising and the Big Freeze is testament to their hard work and dedication. As a past student of Genazzano, I feel great pride in all Bec has done. She is a credit to herself, her family and to Genazzano.

I think it is important the Outstanding Alumna Award goes to someone who has contributed to helping others who are on the margins of society: whether poor, ill, indigenous, refugees, people with disabilities. So many Gen Girls have achieved remarkable success in their careers and deserve acknowledgement. However, I do think to give the Award to someone who has worked tirelessly and in a not-for-profit organisation is making a strong statement in a world where the globalisation of superficiality reigns supreme.”

It is therefore fitting that together we acknowledge Rebecca Daniher’s efforts and dedication, and on behalf of the Genazzano community, thank her sincerely for her commitment to improving the lives of others.

Bec is undoubtedly an inspiration for all Genazzano students and our College community, who can see from her shining example that having the courage and confidence in a time of adversity, is compatible with a successful and fulfilling career in philanthropy.

This is a true reflection of hard work, determination, support and perseverance, fuelled by the love of her Dad Neale, together with her family - husband Drew, mother Jan, sister Lauren and brothers Luke and Ben - in the hope of a cure for MND. The criteria for the Outstanding Alumna Award includes both career achievements and service to others. It is clear that Bec has devoted not only her time and expertise, but also her unwavering passion to serve others in need - helping to raise funds to pursue a cure for MND.

Social Justice Interview with Katrina Slingo (2014) Interviewed by Bridget Henry | Social Justice Prefect

What has inspired you to contribute in service to prison ministry?

Originally it was a curiosity in the area of youth crime and what kind of life circumstances can drive a young person to commit crime.

What does your job entail and what are some of the details about your work?

Very simply, there is a group of us that go onto a unit at Parkville Youth Justice Precinct and chat to whoever is there. We offer to play cards, table tennis or other games. Often, the work is just about being a presence of support, fun or whatever energy is needed at the time.

Where do you experience companionship in your work?

We experience companionship as we spend time with different young people every week and take the time to be whatever presence they need. Sometimes it’s about creating a distraction from hardships and chaos, or listening to stories they share about their lives.

How do you share hope with others and how do you gain it from others?

I gain hope from the great spirit and resilience of many young people at Parkville Youth Justice; witnessing that there is great potential and hope moving forward despite many hardships.

My hope is that in sharing stories from encounters with young people at Parkville, I can shift some of the negative misconceptions about youth crime into a more positive and empathetic stance.

News from the FCJ Sisters Sr Denise Mulcahy, fcJ

Earlier in the year we were pleased to welcome back to Australia, Sr Maureen Martin, who for the past four years was a member of the FCJ Community in Paris.

In February, Sr Barbara Brown-Graham (who in addition to her role as an Assistant to our General Superior, Sr Claire Sykes, has the role of FCJ Area Leader of Australia), arrived in Melbourne. In subsequent weeks, we had the joy of welcoming more FCJ visitors, as the annual consultative meeting of Sr Claire, her assistants and the area leaders, was held in Sorrento in April. A highlight for all of us was on Easter Sunday in the cafeteria at Genazzano, where we FCJs gathered to listen to an address given by Sr Claire. This was followed by a delicious meal and much sharing of conversation with our FCJ visitors.

On 12 September, in the presence of family and friends, seven FCJs celebrated their jubilee of profession in the College Chapel.

Sr Catherine Flynn is 70 years professed, Srs Rosemary Crowe and Joyce Stewart 65 years professed and Srs Cecilia Courtney, Joan Cartlidge and Maureen Martin 60 years professed. In her words of appreciation at the end of the celebration, Sr Barbara made special reference to the significance of 2020, the forthcoming bicentenary of the foundation of the FCJ Sisters, which took place on Holy Thursday, 1820.

The FCJ Christian Life Centre in Calgary was the venue for the FCJ General Chapter in October. Srs Barbara Brown-Graham and Helen Buckley were the Australian Sisters that travelled to Canada for this meeting.

Alumnae Stories Meghan Hore (1985) Appointed To Magistrates’ Court of Victoria Meghan Hoare (1985) was appointed to the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria this past September. Meghan has more than 20 years’ legal experience and will commence her appointment as a magistrate on 1 November 2019.

Meghan was admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1994 and has worked for more than two decades in workers compensation law in both metropolitan and regional Victoria. Her expertise in this area of law was recognised in 2016 in the prestigious Doyle’s Guide.

Meghan has served in senior leadership roles at Slater and Gordon, most recently as General Manager of Workers Compensation.

She has also served in leadership roles in the broader legal community. In 2017, she was appointed by the Minister for Finance to the WorkCover Advisory Committee. In 2016, she served as Chair of the Law Institute of Victoria’s Workers Compensation Committee.

Meghan has both a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts from Monash University.

The College congratulates Meghan on such a monumental achievement.

Vale Tracy Clark & Helen Gebus Tracy Clark, our colleague and our friend.

Tracy Clark was a highly respected teacher at Genazzano for twenty years. She taught Chemistry and Maths to the VCE students and Science to the Junior students. Her enthusiasm was an inspiration to her students, as evidenced by the outstanding successes achieved by so many of those she taught.

Tracy was a dedicated Homeroom teacher who, no matter the year level, always created an inclusive environment where students felt valued. Her care for her students was obvious and something they loved and appreciated. Tracy’s knowledge in her subject areas of Maths and Chemistry was formidable and any of us who worked closely with her were very aware of her intellectual strength. She worked closely with Fisun Kewming in the teaching of Chemistry and the significant numbers of VCE Chemistry students who have passed through the College is a testament to their combined skills and knowledge.

Tracy was intellectually curious and her interests were not confined to the subjects she taught. She loved literature and was widely read, and together with her husband Graeme, travelled extensively.

Her interests and capacity to engage enabled her to make connections with people from all walks of life.

All of those who came into contact with Tracy were touched by her. She had a genuine interest in everyone she met, a wonderful capacity for friendship and she was a great friend in a crisis; always there for those who needed help. Many of us have very happy memories of ‘Tracy’s Lights’ at Christmas time. She warmly extended invitations, not just to her immediate colleagues but to their families and many of the wider Gen community.

Everyone loved seeing the extraordinary display at Tracy and Graeme’s house and all thoroughly enjoyed their generous hospitality.

Tracy embraced life and she loved to laugh; many of us have stories of her irreverent sense of humour.

Her ability to tell stories could lift the spirits of everybody in the room.

To say that the Science Faculty miss Tracy is an understatement. She was unique and irreplaceable and her absence leaves an enormous hole in the fabric of our community. Those of us in the Genazzano family will never forget her.

The Genazzano Library Team reflect on some of our memories of the wonderfully dynamic Teacher Librarian, and champion of books and reading for the Grange Hill Library, Helen Gebus.

When we first met Helen, we were introduced to a lady who made us feel welcomed. Her positive demeanour and enthusiasm were hard to ignore.

She was a librarian Pied Piper. Helen’s love of books and passion for engaging children in the joy of reading is something that will always remain in our hearts and also in the heart of the Genazzano library.

She will be remembered as a petite lady always on the go with boundless energy and amazing ideas.

Helen was a good friend and valued member of our Library team. We will always remember her as a dedicated and enthusiastic Teacher Librarian. She truly loved to inspire and encourage all her students to aim for their best and develop their love of literature and reading.

When you look back at your school years and someone asks you, “Did you have a teacher that you remember with love and admiration?”, there will be many students, past and present, who will say, “Yes, Mrs. Gebus - and I still enjoy reading to this day because of her encouragement and kind words”.

Helen has left a wonderful legacy of happy readers who will always look forward to a visit to the Library to search for that special book.

Genazzano Mothers’ Association Lisa Laird | GMA President

The Genazzano Mothers’ Association was proud to present the Bal du 130 eme Anniversaire: our annual fundraising ball made extra-special in celebration of the Genazzano FCJ College 130th anniversary.

This year, a French theme was chosen to honour the origins of the FCJ Sisters.

Over 500 guests danced the night away at the spectacular Melbourne Pavilion, getting well into the spirit of the occasion. MC and Outstanding Alumna Award recipient, Julia Zaetta, set the tone for the evening, with her irrepressible sense of fun. It was marvellous to see so many former Gen Girls putting on an enthusiastic rendition of the school song and sharing stories of their time at the College.

We even had the volunteer services of some of our newest Alumnae, who were a jaunty sight in their French berets and scarves helping the evening’s events to run smoothly.

Almost $70,000 was raised on the night, and will be donated to the College Building Fund.

There are several exciting building and renovation projects commencing soon, and we are thrilled to be able to contribute to the continual development of our College in this way. The GMA is very grateful to all of the sponsors and donors who contributed to the success of the event, as well as the Ball subcommittee, led this year by Alumna, Anne Dunstan.

Not only did the Ball raise funds, but the atmosphere was a testament to our engaged and positive community.

INTERVIEW WITH MUM & GMA BALL COMMITTEE MEMBER, BOZENA ZEMBRZUSKI

Bozena Zembrzuski (Mum to Natalie in Year 11 and Katherine in Year 7) has had a long association with the Genazzano Mothers’ Association and the annual GMA Ball, beginning way back in 2010. Bozena’s knowledge, experience, sense of humour and sage advice has made her a valuable member of the Ball Committee. In addition to chairing the Ball Committee in 2016, Bozena has taken on many roles and tasks including introducing the famous Wine Well as part of the Ball. Many thanks to Bozena for her amazing contribution to the GMA Ball and the College!

What have you gained from your time on the GMA Ball Committee?

I have found my involvement in the Ball has enabled me to make connections with other Gen Mums and develop wonderful friendships. Working towards a common goal with a group of women and being surrounded by laughter, creativity and ideas is really rewarding. I have enjoyed being able to support my daughters’ school in this way and I also believe it is good for our kids to see us be involved and giving back.

What have been some of the highlights for you over your years of involvement with the GMA Ball?

Bringing in a giant gorilla as part of the decorations for the African themed Ball was certainly memorable and lots of fun. I actually enjoyed the last minute “controlled chaos” in the lead-up to the Ball that happens every year – it is great to see how it all manages to come

together and to be part of that. I have also found that I have gained a greater understanding and appreciation of the staff at Genazzano who work behind the scenes and are instrumental in the success of such events.

And finally, the debrief dinners following the Ball are always great fun – coming together with a group of amazing women to celebrate our hard work and have a good laugh!

What did you enjoy most about this year’s Ball?

I loved being involved in ensuring that Genazzano’s 130th milestone was celebrated in suitable style! I really enjoyed working with all the women on the Committee – we started planning back in August last year and formed a beautiful bond. We had a common goal and worked hard as a team to make sure everyone had a wonderful time.

Genazzano Fathers’ Association Bernie Hunt | GFA President In my first year as President of the GFA, I have enjoyed great support from my fellow committee members and College staff members.

Our role is pertinent to the Genazzano community, as we work together to arrange significant events for the College calendar.

I must make mention of the following GFA Committee members for their support and great work throughout the year: Jason Oen, Frank Licciardello, Laurie Bertelle, Dave Carney, Denove No, Tony Micelotta, Joel Deane, along with past GFA Presidents, Bruce MacIsaac, Rod Bischof and Neville Drake.

The GFA was formed just over 25 years ago and our founding President was David Galbally, AM QC. Our mission, then and now, is to have a presence in our daughters’ schooling lives, and to provide opportunities for Dads to get together, socialise and create friendships via College events.

Our mission, then and now, is to have a presence in our daughters’ schooling lives.

Our first event for the year was the GFA Welcome BBQ, held on Friday 22 March on the College grounds above the Fathers’ Steps.

There were many Dads in attendance and was a great event not only was it a chance to meet some new friends but, for some of us, it was a chance to show off our BBQ skills…

Our annual GFA Wine Tasting Dinner was held in June, with Gen Dads and friends enjoying a complete dining experience at AliQapa, Kew. There was a sommelier on hand to talk us through the evening’s wine and food pairings. This was again a fantastic event! Thanks to Laurie Berelle and Tony Micelotta for all their efforts.

The annual GFA Footy Tipping Competition throughout the 2019 AFL Season was a success once again. Many thanks to our co-ordinator, Joel Deane.

Our GFA Father/Daughter Camps were held for Years 5/6 and 7/8 once again. I would like to thank Dave Carney, Tony Micelotta and Denove No from our committee for their amazing efforts in running of both of these wonderful events.

The ELC - Year 4 Pizza Party was held on the last day of Term One breakup and was well supported by students, parents and staff.

I would like to thank the committee, which was led by Denove No, for making this event so successful. Special thanks also to Frank and Grace Licciardello and their staff at Da Pino’s Pizzeria in Box Hill for their generosity.

The ELC to Year 12 Eucharist was held on Sunday 2 June at the College Chapel, followed by a fantastic breakfast courtesy of the GFA. I would like to thank Fr Peter Malone who lead the mass and Deputy Principal: Faith & Mission, Charles Watt, for ensuring it ran smoothly. Director of Music, Janet Dawson, and her talented team of Genazzano musicians and singers also performed beautifully.

Special thank you to Tony Micelotta and Laurie Bertelle for the wonderful breakfast they dished up.

The GFA Footy Finals Lunch was held in September at Marvel Stadium.

SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT INNOVATIVE LEARNING AT GENAZZANO

Genazzano Receives Award for Innovative Learning Brett Henebery | Journalist - The Educator

The Educator’s fifth annual Innovative Schools list revealed Genazzano as the leader of cutting edge change and innovation in Australia for 2019.

The College was recognised for the work that its Institute of Learning & Brain Sciences is doing to promote an understanding of brain function and health for improved learning and living, and in doing so, lift student outcomes across the campus. Genazzano teachers use their expertise to translate and apply specific neuroscientific principles to different contexts for enhanced learning outcomes.

Below is The Educator’s interview with Principal, Karen Jebb, which discovers the impact this is having across Genazzano’s teaching and learning community.

Can you tell us about the programs that have contributed to the Institute’s success?

Three years ago, Genazzano committed to a whole-school approach to professional learning, that embraced the Science of Learning, to promote the principles of Psychology, Education and Neuroscience (PEN principles) for improved learning and teaching across our P-12 campus. These principles have afforded our College a shared understanding of the way the brain embraces learning and underpins the teaching practices across the College. Perhaps, most powerfully, our teachers have become researchers within their own classrooms.

They have collaborated, collected data and synthesised results, with the sole purpose of improving the learning experience that takes place in each and every classroom, every day. It is not about our teachers becoming brain-researchers, the key is in the ‘translation’. Above all, our teachers have translated the scientific principles of learning and applied these creatively and innovatively to their own class and context. And we haven’t stopped there. Our Institute of Learning & Brain Sciences is sharing our research and discoveries about learning on both a national and international level. For example, in August 2019, in collaboration with the Australian College of Educators, our Institute hosted our inaugural conference entitled: ‘The Science of Learning: Education with the Brain in Mind’. The excitement in the air was palpable, as numerous local and interstate delegates heard from our teachers alongside world experts in psychology, education and neuroscience. Our staff and their research are now in demand and requested to speak at future national and international conferences.

We certainly are on an exciting trajectory at Genazzano with learning and the brain at the forefront.

What are the most exciting and impactful developments you have observed at the school as a result of the programs you offer?

At the conclusion of each of our Science of Learning Professional Learning Modules, our teachers present the findings of their Microprojects (classroom research) in a gala showcase. The projects involve pre-testing, applying a learning intervention based on one or more of the PEN Principles, and post-testing, to determine the impact of the chosen intervention. The presentations by individual and/or small groups of teachers, have occasioned a profound impact on learning in the classrooms and beyond. Teachers have shared evidence in the

form of improved results in many key areas, endorsed by positive student feedback. The evidence gained from students is equally as powerful as, for example, their assessment results. Our students can eloquently explain how a change in teaching practice has engaged them in their learning and enhanced their understanding of how the brain works, when learning takes place. Furthermore, through our Student Brain Club, our students have conducted their own research, are harnessing their own voice and sharing their experience to improve their learning for both school and life. At Genazzano, we know how important the Science of Learning is and we have taken our passion for learning to the broader community by providing a range of opportunities for them to learn about the brain, through events such as free community seminars, national student competitions, regular newsletters and our inaugural conference. 2020 is already shaping up with several innovative developments underway.

I understand that in 2020, the Institute will launch campaign to promote neurodiversity in education and to develop individual student learning profiles. Can you tell us more about this?

We have exciting plans for 2020 that include a research project to acknowledge and celebrate the strengths of diverse learners, alongside the opening of a new Brain, Technology & Learning hub at the College. In addition, we are thrilled to announce a studentled symposium for Neurodiversity Week (Mar 16-20). Our aim here is to reach out and to engage with other schools and institutions, to promote better understanding, support and appreciation for the strengths that lie within all learners. At Genazzano, we want all our learners to excel in their own way, to feel supported by their teachers and peers, and confident about themselves as individuals with unique strengths, who are valued and known by their school community. We are continuing to develop our individual student learning profiles, incorporating a holistic framework, underpinned by the tenets of Ignatian pedagogy. The launch of our 2020 Gen.i.us Profile will once again highlight Genazzano as an innovative school, a leader in girl’s education and at the forefront of educational debate and innovation.
