Maang Tikka

First, we’re in India, where a gorgeous head pendant is worn on a bride’s forehead to symbolise the union of two souls.

The Maang Tikka sits on the Ajna Chakra, or third eye, and is traditionally made of Gold with Polki Diamonds or Pearls. First worn in India over 2,500 years ago, Polki Diamonds are Diamonds that retain their natural, uncut form, representing one of the oldest-known forms of Diamond cutting.

Claddagh Ring

In Irish culture, the Claddagh ring symbolises love, loyalty and friendship with its traditional heart, crown and hands details.

The design comes from the village of Claddagh, near Galway, on Ireland’s west coast and can be given as a promise ring or wedding band. Lots of my Irish friends living in the UK have adopted it as a sign of cultural heritage; it is instantly recognised worldwide as a marker of a culture with such strong heritage ties.

Idzila

Idzilas are worn in Southern African cultures to symbolise marriage, wealth, and social standing.

Mainly made of brass or copper, they are circular bands worn by women in the village around their necks. Some historical sources note that they create a connection between fuller figures and are meant to replicate natural ‘rolls’ found on some women’s bodies, offering an interesting look at diverse jewellery trends and female beauty standards across the world.

The Beauty of Inclusions Words by Rachel Watts

In the world of natural gemstones, perfection isn’t always what it seems.

Inclusions – those tiny, naturally occurring features formed as a gem grows – are sometimes viewed as flaws, yet are also what build the character and value of the stone. They reveal a gem’s geological journey and elevate its beauty and rarity well above those of factory-made imitations.

Inclusions are key indicators of a gemstone’s natural origin and age, which often increase its value and validate provenance in heirloom pieces. Like fingerprints, no two inclusions are the same, giving each stone a character entirely its own.

Rutile Quartz In Rutile Quartz, inclusions become the ‘star’ of the show. Fine needles of titanium dioxide streak through the crystal in golden, copper or jet-black threads, creating patterns that feel cosmic.

These ‘rutiles’ form under specific temperature and pressure conditions, and their arrangement – straight, clustered, or sunbursting – turns Clear Quartz into a miniature work of unique art.

Emerald Emeralds are celebrated not in spite of their inclusions, but because of them. Known as the gem’s ‘jardin’, the internal wisps, veils and crystals within an Emerald are a hallmark of authenticity. They speak to the turbulent geological forces that forged the stone millions of years ago. Rather than diminishing value, particularly beautiful or characteristic inclusions make an Emerald even more prized.
