TO DO Cycling

Polish your bike, pump up the tires and discover the beautiful surroundings of Kasterlee and the Kempen region. Opt for a marked cycle loop or map out your own route along the cycle junction network.

Kasterlee treats you to traditional ice cream It doesn’t take much to have a wonderful day. Nice weather, good company, a beautiful cycling route and a delicious ice cream are more than enough. If you cycle the ice cream route, you will enjoy the beauty of extensive fields, the wooded Kempen Heuvelrug (Hill Ridge) and the valley of the Nete River along the way.

Hiking

Vast heathland, wide fields, dense forests, marshes and idyllic ponds, that is Kasterlee. So, come on! Put on your hiking boots and head out into the countryside for a short walk or a real hike along the walking junctions. In the domain of the Slapende Reus (Sleeping Giant), the artist duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh built the sculpture ‘A GIANT SCULPTURE’, a monumental head on the top of the Hoge Mouw (High Dune).

TO DO

Experience the outdoors

Plan your holiday with your children in mind or set out with your partner, family or with a large group of friends. Kasterlee and the Kempen are a wonderful place to stay. Do you like the water? Then take a kayak trip on the Kleine Nete river. Or discover the winner in you during a game of farmer’s or miniature golf. Mountain bikers and horse riders also get their money’s worth here. If you come with a group, opt for an original trip with a visit to the goat farm or participate in the sheep walk and try to herd sheep yourself.

MOUNTAIN BIKING Can it be a bit faster and steeper? Opt for the mountain bike route with three contiguous loops. A varied tour with steep climbs, bends, and narrow paths interspersed with a flat, rural and wooded environment.

TO DISCOVER A touch of culture

Kasterlee has very beautiful historic corners and edges. Old wind and water mills, special places and buildings with stories all colour the landscape. The British Military Cemetery pays homage to the deceased soldiers from the Second World War. And unique in Flanders is the Frans Masereel Centre, an international centre for graphic arts where artists reside and experiment with different forms of graphic art.

FRANS MASEREEL CENTRE The Frans Masereel Centre offers a workplace and residence to graphic artists and critics who want to work with engraving, relief printing, silkscreen printing and lithography or who want to investigate the position of graphic arts in relation to other visual arts. The emphasis is mainly on creation and experimentation in the studio. The Frans Masereel Centre is a graphic laboratory where the possibilities of graphic applications are investigated, expanded and reformulated. www.fransmasereelcentrum.be

TRIP TIPS! LIVE ‘HEEMERF’ The local history museum ‘de Waaiberg’ tells about the life of the Kempenaar (inhabitant of the Kempen) from the 19th century onwards. Every second Sunday of the month (except in July and August) you can visit the long-walled farmhouse and outbuildings, and enjoy music performed by an amateur group. Each month a different craft is in the spotlight and you can also enjoy a bread baking demonstration. At the farm shed, you can visit a permanent exhibition on a topic from Kasterlee’s past.

TO TASTE

Regional delicacies

Do you have a sweet tooth or are you rather a lover of something savoury? Choose from chocolate Pompoentjes (pumpkins) or Kabouterscheten (gnome farts), Kabouterkoekjes (gnome biscuits) made from shortbread or opt for traditional rice pudding and farm ice cream, Kempen goat’s cheese, white and black puddings, salted bacon, pumpkin jam and ‘Kastelse’ honey… Gourmets should definitely try a local beer - a Kastel, Witte Madam (white lady), Pompoenbier (pumpkin beer) - or a Gin Pit.

TO SEE

Pumpkin madness

Kasterlee is the village of the ‘Pompoenpapeters’ (pumpkin porridge eaters). In the autumn, the municipality is under the spell of this giant orange fruit. Everywhere there are pumpkins and pumpkin events. More than 20 years ago, the pumpkin mania started with one event, the Pompoendag (pumpkin day) on the last Sunday of October. In the meantime, the ‘Pompoenmaand’ (pumpkin month) has grown into a major folk event with many events and activities. This has led to a special culinary offer in our many high-quality catering establishments. • Harvest festival ‘de Pompoenerie’: first Sunday of October • Pumpkin shooting: second Sunday of October • Pumpkin day: third Sunday of October • Pumpkin regatta: fourth Sunday of October
