Success stories

Helena Eby, MBS ’24, MD Candidate ’29

Geisinger College of Health Sciences, School of Medicine

From ICU to MD: How Geisinger’s MBS program brought Helena full circle

The MBS program felt like coming home for Helena Eby, MBS ’24. As a native of central Pennsylvania, she was drawn to the small class sizes, strong faculty support and the chance to stay local while preparing for medical school. “I knew I wanted to serve my community, and Geisinger offered the perfect place to do that.”

Helena spent 3 years working as a nursing assistant in the ICU at several Geisinger hospitals and volunteered extensively through the program and medical school clubs. Balancing hands-on

clinical work with academic and leadership roles allowed her to strengthen her skills and selfassurance.

Now a first-year medical student and Abigail Geisinger Scholar at the School of Medicine, Helena reflects on a full-circle moment: “The program challenged me, supported me and helped me realize I can succeed. The connections and relationships I built at Geisinger will stay with me for a lifetime.”

Darin Chhing, MBS ’21, MD Candidate ’26

Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine

Leadership grounded in research: Darin found his voice through MBS

For Darin Chhing, MBS ’21, the program was more than preparation for medical school — it was a transformative experience that shaped his academic path and professional outlook. Drawn to the curriculum, supportive community and interprofessional learning, he found the challenge and mentorship he needed.

“Routine check-ins with my advisor, responsive faculty and the opportunity to connect with current medical students helped me understand how to prepare for success beyond the program,”

he said. He also credits the MBS coursework with providing him with critical research skills that resulted in a publication and continues to guide his work today.

Now as a medical student, Darin reflects on the relationships he built as the most valuable part of his MBS experience. “The program gave me the time and space to grow as a scholar, deepen my learning and reaffirm the importance of lifelong learning as a future physician.”

Success stories

Dayna Picozzo, MBS ’23, MD Candidate ’28

Geisinger College of Health Sciences, School of Medicine

A foundation for success: Turning determination into a dream

Like many students, Dayna Picozzo, MBS ’23, dreamed of becoming a doctor since childhood, but the path wasn’t simple. After college, she worked as a medical scribe and completed additional coursework yet still lacked the guidance to reach medical school.

Enrolling in the MBS program changed that. The curriculum strengthened her GPA, sharpened her study strategies and provided faculty mentors

who guided her through every step of the application process.

Now an Abigail Geisinger Scholar and second-year medical student, Dayna credits MBS with giving her the foundation to succeed. “It’s always been my dream to become a physician and to practice here in my hometown. The master’s program was an integral part of my journey.”

Sagar Patel, MBS ’24, DO Candidate ’29

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

Mentorship, research and growth: Sagar’s path to medicine

Sagar Patel, MBS ’24, knew he needed to strengthen his academics and gain clinical experience to improve his chances of medical school admission. The MBS program gave him exactly that — and more.

“The faculty truly cared about me, not just as a student, but as a person,” Sagar said. His professors became mentors who guided him through challenges, kept him focused on his goal and inspired him to strive for more.

Now a first-year medical student at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Sagar says the MBS program equipped him with the study skills, time management and confidence to succeed. “Be willing to work hard and take risks,” he advises future students. “You’ll find role models who can change your life.”

Success stories

Rider Daas, MBS ’20, DMD ’25

University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine

The tools to succeed: An MBS leads to dentistry

When Rider Daas, MBS ’20, DMD ’25 was preparing for dental school, he turned to Geisinger’s MBS program to strengthen his academic foundation. “I chose Geisinger because of the accelerated 1-year program,” he said. “I knew it would help me show that I could handle the workload of dental school.”

The program gave him the tools to balance coursework, manage demanding schedules and build resilience.

“That’s the biggest thing I took from Geisinger — learning how to manage the workload. It’s something I’m very grateful for.”

Today, Dr. Daas is a practicing dentist in New Jersey.

Krishna Patel, MBS ’25, OD Candidate ’29

Pennsylvania College of Optometry

Discovering new possibilities: Krishna’s path to optometry

For Krishna Patel, MBS ’25, pursuing the MBS program was originally a step toward medical school. But as her interest shifted to optometry, the program became an equally valuable foundation for her next chapter.

“The MBS program not only strengthened my science knowledge, but also kept me actively engaged in education,” she said. “Without it, I might have gone directly into the workforce after undergrad, which could have pulled me away from academics altogether.”

Today, Krishna is an optometry student at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Drexel University. She credits the MBS program with giving her confidence, discipline and the skills to manage a demanding courseload. “One of the most valuable parts of the program was the supportive environment,” she said. “My professors and classmates were invested in my success, and their encouragement helped me realize I can achieve even greater goals.”

Success stories

Bria Thomas, MBS ’22, DPM Candidate ’27 and Wynnsome Gadson, MBS ’23, DPM Candidate ’27

Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine

Stronger together: Their MBS was a step toward podiatry school

Bria and Wynnsome didn’t know each other before podiatry school, but they quickly discovered a shared connection: Geisinger’s MBS program. Just 1 year apart, their time in the program gave them the resources, discipline, insight and community to thrive at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine.

Seeing familiar faces and connecting with other MBS alumni in their classes helped Bria and Wynnsome adjust to the demands of podiatry school. The transition was made easier by their shared foundation, which gave them a sense of belonging and reminded them of the strong support network they first found at Geisinger.

Their story is proof that MBS prepares students for more than academics — it creates connections that carry forward into professional school and beyond.
