It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 9th annual Backstage at the Geffen.

This event was created to raise funds for our exciting and ever-growing education and outreach programs. Your presence here tonight means continued support of programs that have allowed us to reach more than 19,000 students, seniors and underserved communities throughout Los Angeles.

Furthermore, it is a privilege to recognize Julie Andrews and CAA for their continued commitment to the cultivation and creation of great theater.

This year’s recipient of our Distinction in Service Award is presented to Creative Artists Agency. This award was created to honor those who make contributions by supporting artists and theater arts as a whole. This includes cultivating writers, actors, directors and designers as well as the theaters themselves. As a leader in the entertainment industry, CAA has been an integral part of the work we do here at the Geffen. By granting us access to and encouraging their extraordinary clients, we have worked with some of the world’s most renowned theater directors, writers, designers and actors. Artists such as John Goodman, Rita Wilson, Annette Bening along with such directors as Dan Sullivan and Doug Hughes among many others who have graced this stage time and again. We are grateful for our ongoing relationship with CAA and pleased to honor them this evening.

In addition, we are pleased to honor the extraordinary Julie Andrews with our distinction in theater award this evening. Joining the likes of Karl Malden, Annette Bening and Dame Helen Mirren, Dame Julie Andrews is considered by us one of the finest performers to ever grace stages and screens around the world. This award acknowledges her for cultivating the art of theater by being an active participant. Further, we admire her for inspiring future artists with her passion and commitment to the dramatic arts. Her grace, her beauty and her unearthly talent have made her an actor that many wish to emulate with a career as enviable as her five octave coloratura soprano range.

I want to congratulate the entire Board and thank them for their outstanding participation in this year’s event. Additionally, I want to personally recognize the Backstage at the Geffen Host Committee for their extraordinary level of support. This joint effort of all involved has resulted in a record fundraising year for this event.

To those of you taking your first step “backstage” we are so grateful to be celebrating our ninth Backstage at the Geffen with you. This evening is an opportunity for the audience to become part of the secrets of backstage life and our way of providing a special treat for being loyal supporters throughout the year. Thank you for joining us for a night of unique entertainment as we support the education and outreach programs of the Geffen Playhouse. Your support of this event is making a difference in our community and to an underserved population of Los Angeles.

Julie Andrews Julie Andrews has been a beloved and much-honored star of stage, screen, television and recordings for more than half a century. Ms. Andrews spent her youth in England as a stage and radio performer before making her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend. Her subsequent theater credits include My Fair Lady (NY Drama Critics Award, Tony nomination), Camelot (Tony nomination) and Victor/Victoria.

Once established as a Broadway star, Ms. Andrews made her iconic film debut in Mary Poppins which earned her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award. Her other film credits include The Sound of Music (Academy Award nomination, Golden Globe Award), Thoroughly Modern Millie, Darling Lili,10, Victor/Victoria (Academy Award nomination, Golden Globe Award), The Princess Diaries films, and most recently the Shrek films, Enchanted, The Tooth Fairy and Despicable Me, to name a few, and the list is still growing. Ms. Andrews has also been honored for her work on television beginning in 1957 with her Emmy-nominated performance in Cinderella. Her television credits include The Julie Andrews Hour (Emmy Award), Julie and Carol Specials (Emmy nomination), Sounds of Christmas (Emmy nomination), Eloise at the Plaza, Eloise at Christmastime and On Golden Pond. In addition to her stage and screen work, Ms. Andrews is an accomplished best selling author and lauded philanthropist. She joined forces with her daughter to create the children’s book imprint, The Julie Andrews Collection which has released 25 books to date. Ms. Andrews received her honors as a Dame of the British Empire by Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II on New Year’s Eve 1999, and she was a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women from 1992 to 2006. She received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2001.

Geffen Playhouse Education & Outreach Programs The Geffen Playhouse has six major education initiatives that engage more than 19,000 students and community members in the live arts each year, touching people of all ages who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience theater. These programs extend the reach of traditional education programs to include children from as young as toddlers at the theater’s Saturday Scene performances, to seniors as old as 100 with the Geffen’s landmark CREATE program.

student Matinees The foundation of the theater’s education program, Student Matinees began in 1997 with a free performance of Harriet’s Return featuring Debbie Allen. Since then, the Geffen Playhouse has refined the program to consistently provide complimentary tickets and free transportation to see the Geffen’s productions for students of Title I, low-performing schools in the Los Angeles area, as well as special groups such as incarcerated youth and members of gang rehabilitation programs.

Before each student performance, the Geffen offers pre and post show workshops with its teaching artists to provide in-depth insight and original study guides to the teachers and students. In addition, Student Matinee performances are often followed by interactive discussions with the actors and staff.

school Tours Launched in 2000, the Geffen Playhouse’s School Tour program brings live performances of professional productions onsite to local elementary and middle public schools. To help the students gain a greater understanding of each performance, the theater’s education department prepares age-specific study guides and provides pre and post show workshops tailored individually to each classroom.

CREATE The Geffen’s CREATE (Community Representatives Engaged in Active Theater Education) program, which began in 2001, is a partnership between the Geffen Playhouse and more than 40 community and social service groups. Through CREATE, the Geffen Playhouse provides access to customized workshops, free performance tickets and post-show discussion groups led by the Geffen’s director of education. Called a model program by the city of Los Angeles, CREATE serves an average of 1,900 community members per season.

Saturday Scene FAMILY PROGRAMMING Saturday Scene, which began in 2000, introduces theater to its youngest audience as well as encourages multiple generations to get involved through reduced-priced, family-oriented productions. Unlike the other components of Geffen’s education program, Saturday Scene focuses on special family programming that is separate and apart from the productions currently in the theater’s season. Positioned as an imaginative alternative to Saturday morning television, Saturday Scene performances begin at 11am on select Saturdays throughout the year. As part of the theater’s outreach program, complimentary tickets are also offered to children’s charities, schools and social service groups. Before each Saturday morning performance, activities are held that are designed to enhance the experience and prepare viewers for what they are about to see on stage.

GOLDEN TICKET PROGRAM Started in 2010, the Golden Ticket Program is a new program designed to significantly improve the quality of life for economically disadvantaged and socially isolated seniors through participatory arts experiences that stimulate them intellectually, creatively, socially and emotionally. As well as providing transportation and tickets to main stage shows, Geffen Playhouse makes study guides and holds pre and post show discussions with seniors.

STORY PIRATES The Geffen Playhouse began its Story Pirates partnership in 2009 as a way to expand the resources of the theater’s current in-school initiatives. Story Pirates, which was originally founded in New York in 2003, is a nationally recognized arts and literacy organization working to engage students in under-resourced public schools by showing them that their ideas, their words and their stories are important. As such, the cornerstone of the company is the Play/Write Program, a series of creative writing and drama workshops that lead to a musical sketch comedy show acted by professional actors and comedians and comprised entirely of stories written by kids. As a partner of the Geffen Playhouse, Story Pirates recently opened a West Coast branch this and now visits over 20 Title I Los Angeles public schools each year in addition to performing for the general public as part of the Geffen Playhouse’s Saturday Scene program.
