Playwright & Performer

With his expertise in enigmas and illusions, David Kwong delights and challenges audiences around the world with his intellectual brand of magic. A veteran “cruciverbalist” (crossword puzzle constructor), Kwong routinely creates puzzles for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Wall Street Journal.

Kwong was the puzzle and secret code consultant for the hit NBC show Blindspot. He was the head magic consultant on the 2013 worldwide hit film Now You See Me. Other films Kwong has worked on include The Imitation Game, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Project Power, and The House with a Clock in its Walls. A TED Talk favorite, Kwong regularly speaks to companies, demonstrating the principles of illusion and the science of why your brain is fooled. Kwong’s book Spellbound: Seven Principles of Illusion to Captivate Audiences and Unlock the Secrets of Success was published by Harper Business.

After 125 sold-out performances in New York, Kwong’s one-man show, The Enigmatist, will premiere in Los Angeles at the Geffen Playhouse.

Kwong is a graduate of Harvard University, where he studied the history of magic.

Brett J. Banakis is a designer for theater, opera, and live performance based in Brooklyn, NY. Brett is excited to continue his collaboration with David Kwong after developing a long-running magic/puzzles/ cryptology show, The Enigmatist, which will be transferring to the Geffen Playhouse next season. In 2019, Brett made his Geffen Playhouse design debut with Mysteri-

Puzzle Designer

Dave is an intellectual property lawyer and a puzzle designer and consultant. As an attorney, he has represented some of the country's most well-known companies in copyright, trademark, and patent matters, but over the past decade has devoted much of his time to puzzle creation and consultation.

Dave has co-written the MIT Mystery Hunt, the largest annual puzzle hunt event, three times, and has designed hundreds of other puzzles, puzzle events, and games, some of which have appeared or will appear on the big and small screens. Dave has also worked with David Kwong on a number of projects, including as Puzzle Consultant for David's off-Broadway show The Enigmatist, Puzzle Designer for the Enigmas playing card deck featuring an accompanying online puzzle hunt, and several mini puzzle hunts. Andy Jones founded Baseline Theatrical in 2014 as a full service general management office for the theatre, after ten years on the management teams of Rent, Avenue Q, and In The Heights. On Broadway he has been the General Manager of Hamilton; Freestyle Love Supreme; The Cher Show; Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812; and The Last Ship. Off Broadway he serves as the General Manager of Audible Theater at The Minetta Lane. In addition, Andy has served as the Executive Producer for Freestyle Love Supreme on Broadway and produced the sold out run of David Kwong's The Enigmatist in New York City.

As part of Baseline Theatrical he has served on the General Management teams of Derren Brown: Secret, Hamilton, The Cher Show, Hundred Days, Lempicka, and Bliss.

Previously he assistant directed Kimberly Senior's production of Engagements at Second Stage Theater and Jeffrey Seller's production

of Man in the Ceiling at Bay Street Theater. Dylan is a proud graduate of Northwestern University.

AMY LEVINSON

Dramaturg

Amy is the Associate Artistic Director at the Geffen Playhouse.

During her tenure at the Geffen, she has spearheaded numerous programs for commissioning and developing new plays. Dramaturgy credits include the commissions and world premieres of Donald Margulies’ Time Stands Still and Coney Island Christmas, Jane Anderson’s The Quality of Life and The Escort, Amanda Peet’s Our Very Own Carlin McCullough, and Michael Mitnick’s Mysterious Circumstances. Other dramaturgy credits include Actually, Invisible Tango, Extraordinary Chambers, Build, Equivocation, Joan Rivers: A Work in Progress by a Life in Progress, Guards at the Taj, and Helder Guimarães' virtual show, The Present. She holds an M.F.A. in Dramaturgy from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Matt is a director and producer for FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and has directed episodes of Game of Thrones (DGA nomination), Mad Men, Fargo, The Good Wife, and Succession. He helmed the pilot episode for Hulu’s The Great (Emmy nomination) starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and is currently producing and directing all episodes of WandaVision, a Marvel Studios event series for Disney+ starring Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen.

Artistic Director

Matt Shakman is Artistic Director of the Geffen Playhouse. In this role, he is responsible for identifying, developing, and staging new work and revivals of classic plays with a focus on exceptional storytelling and audience experience.

Matt last helmed Mysterious Circumstances for the Geffen in 2019 and prior to joining as Artistic Director in 2017, Shakman directed three acclaimed productions at the Playhouse: the West Coast premiere of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Good People (2012), the world premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher’s new adaptation of Wait Until Dark (2013), and Joshua Harmon’s Bad

Gil Cates, Jr. is Executive Director of Geffen Playhouse. In this role, he is responsible for managing the Geffen’s day-to-day operations; developing new, ongoing theater partnerships and leading its mission to inform, entertain and inspire diverse audiences with live theater of the highest caliber. Prior to being named Executive Director in 2015, Cates served as Geffen Playhouse Board Vice Chairman since 2012 and served as a producer and director in theater, film and television. His theater credits include the award-winning Names (Matrix Theatre Company) and Three Sisters and David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre (both at Syracuse Stage). Cates’ film credits include The Surface (starring Sean Astin and Geffen Playhouse alumnus Chris Mulkey), Jobs (starring Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad, Dermot Mulroney, as well as Geffen Playhouse alumni G E F F E N P L AY H O U S E 5

In addition, Cates co-produced and co-directed the critically acclaimed Life After Tomorrow, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, which premiered on Showtime. His other films include Deal (starring Burt Reynolds, Bret Harrison and Charles Durning) and The Mesmerist (starring Jessica Capshaw and Geffen Playhouse alumnus Neil Patrick Harris). Cates’ television directorial debut was an episode of the NBC comedy Joey, starring Emmy winner Matt LeBlanc. He studied at the National Theatre Institute in Waterford, Connecticut, and holds a B.F.A. in Drama from Syracuse University.

Chief Financial Officer

Behnaz “Nazy” Ataee is Chief Financial Officer of Geffen Playhouse. In this role, she has oversight responsibility for accounting functions of the theater, including operating and capital budgets. In addition, she supports all IT and HR activities. Behnaz was named Chief Financial Officer in 2015 after

serving as General Manager since 2002. She first joined Geffen Playhouse in 1999. Previously, Ataee worked as a senior financial analyst for Ultratech Inc., an international semiconductor company based in San Jose. Prior to Ultratech, she was an auditor for Van Sloten CPA, after holding the position of Director of Accounting at FABS Management, where she was responsible for overseeing the finances of more than 25 non-profit organizations.

As a financial professional with more than 30 years’ experience in for-profit and non-profit financial management and auditing, Ataee began her career in the Bay Area as a partner in a small tech startup.

She holds a master’s degree from Pepperdine University.

THE WRITERS’ ROOM A group for Los Angeles-based playwrights, The Writers’ Room is a product of the Geffen’s deep commitment to supporting new plays and specifically to fostering bold, relevant work by the vibrant artistic community of this city. During this one-year residency, playwright members gather monthly at the Geffen to share their work and receive feedback from their peers and the Geffen’s artistic staff, culminating in a play reading series.
