“The greatest creations of architecture are not so much the product of Individual labor, rather the product of social endeavor, they are things simply cobbled together by working people, rather than inspired inventions of the creative genius, they are the traces a nation leaves behind, the strata deposited by the centuries, the lees of successive evaporations of human society, in short they are a kind of geological formation. Victor Hugo

MUSEUM OF HABITUAL ERRORS

STUDIO RECYCLEBIN

Trivandrum India Team Work Team Recyclebin in association with Trivandrum city corporation erecting the MUSEUM OF HABITUAL ERRORS as a predecessor of the noble move of banning plastic carry bags from March 1 st 2017. As part of the exhibition of alternative materials on 20th MARCH 2017, museum of habitual errors portrays the protagonist , WASTE !! Museum of habitual errors is a journey of waste to such a layer of existence, and hence it is a journey back to ourself. Through museum of habitual errors we intend to evoke the already embedded relation we have with the world around. Here waste descends down to our behavioral patterns. It is when we neglect our own behavior that, waste a product of the same, becomes a mistake. It is the same collective behavior pocketed in individual backyards that get amplified in the society. Like any other societal mistake here also nature, the conceived protector, ironically transforms to the victim of the terror. It is a question back to why we exist like the way we exist. Hence habitual errors.

Public park in heart of city was converted to a museum design space, hence making the event completely participatory.

INSTALLATION

Waste is a phenomenon of collective consciousness. Though perceived as a material by product of our lifestyle, waste has a layered existence in our conscious level. It exists in the psychological backyard of all individuals and is magnified to the scale of a universal society. The museum is designed as a cuboid filled with the biggest disaster we produce, PET bottles. When nature gives water, many a times, we give back a plastic bottle. Yes, lifeline of earth comes in packet of future filth for earth. Lets not start with a “stop to plastic bottle “ slogan. It never works that way ! Instead, lets just start with a second thought. Let us share the second moment. The moment after we drink water. Share the bottle we drink water from with us.

The museum is hence a product of contribution of our errors, from where we view our own errors. It requires 70,000 PET bottles to construct the installation. The same holds true for the exhibits contained, our errors. We intent to collect the errors from the holders of errors, ourselves. This requires collection of few materials we otherwise discard, - Plastic wrappers of sweets and lays etc., - Paper plates, paper cups - Plastic pens

Daily disasters The fingertip association makes disasters a daily affair. Waste becomes clear reflection of our self at these points. Global Texture Plastic is an added global layer. The unique addition never meant to blend back to its finest roots. All the plastic that is ever made still exist here. The new texture took the slowest possible invasion to every nooks and corners and even fingertips.

Pens We know pens have refill, But still they are thrown off, May be its high time we should actually know, What we already know.

Cups It takes 50 to 1000 years for plastic to decompose, Paper cups take 50 year to decompose,Both kills with no difference

STUDIO RECYCLEBIN Team Work

Considering the need for public open spaces within the city, new project is initiated along 1 km stretch in the periphery of city. The project is initiated by trivandrum city corporation and we,studio team Recyclebin won the competition. My work was mostly involved in design development ,site and community understanding. The project is proposed with at-most practicality with keen consideration of existing biodiversity and public needs.

INTERDISCIPLINARY DESIGN APPROACH

DESIGN PROCESS

ARBORETUM, MUSEUM OF TREES This is one of the most popular concepts in greening an area with a high value added to the species of plants that are included. This becomes space that attracts public especially children and also enhances the aesthetics and micro climate of the area. Climate change being on of the biggest challenges of the times, there is need to select species that will help mitigate the effects of change and also cope with the change. Slow growing and indigenous trees that are capable of withstanding the extreme temperatures and rainfall, changes in humidity. There is need to select species that bring down carbon footprint, atmospheric temperature and air pollution.

CARBON NEUTRAL VILLAGE, WAYANAD, INDIA

STUDIO RECYCLEBIN Team Work

The people of meenangadi panchayat of kerala in India are aiming to become the world’s first carbon neutral grama panchayat by 2020. It aims to achieve this by conserving and expanding its forests and biodiversity; reducing its carbon emissions drastically from household, transportation and industrial sectors; conserving its soil and water; practicing organic agriculture; reducing and recycling its waste and preparing to tackle climate change with best practices for sustainable development. Stages of work so far (2017Oct ) - Transit walk - Generation of concept thread for complete master plan - Participatory design workshop with communities - Bus-stand and resource park design (As an ideal energy efficient model)

The responsibility model based on power are Bottom UP(the majority proposed) but both has proved invalid in many cases, hence proposing an approach with shared responsibility model, its not just about power, its about sustainability

CITY

IN A BUILDING

THE URBAN HYBRID ADVISOR - FERDA KOLHATAN CO TEACHER - HART MARLOW

“City in a building “ explores densification through experimentation and speculative means. Brooklyn being a unique cultural part of New York is experimented with this bold hybrid of extremely conflicting typologies, thereby questioning today’s larger issues of density, cultural conflicts and more over environmental concerns, etc. The focus is on generating new urban types through techniques of collaging, layering, extrusion, subtraction, and sectioning. The resulting architectural objects will look “inward” rather than “outward”. As such, the goal is not to think urbanity through external connectivity or through urban space, but rather through a rigorous and radical inversion of urban qualities into a single volume.

PLAN COLLAGE OF URBAN HYBRID DEVELOPED FROM DIFFERENT PRECEDENT STUDIES

UD summer projects is about an urban hybrid consisting of recycling facility integrated with public urban art spaces and residential units .Through speculative means, the hybrid is designed from collaging various urban precedents ,i.e.. typical baroque cathedral and a modern power house plant residential unit. The spaces act porous and they interact in inwardly generating more tangible and intangible spaces.

MASSING DIAGRAMS

PLAN DRAWING FOR HYBRIDIZED CITY BLOCK - RECYCLING FACILITY WITH COMMERCIAL AND PUBLIC SPACES

Potential of building is explored by considering it as a larger bin collecting trash from all side of built , functioning the recycling facility at street level with distinctive spaces for public urban spaces and connecting up with rooftop leisure areas. The central connectivity courtyards create moments of curiosity with extremely different typologies amalgamating together like mechanic parts of recycling facility with art corridors yet brings out boldly the highly dense urban spaces. The leisure areas express new materiality of recycled nontoxic materials in linear patterns creating varying spaces

CITY AND ITS CONTEXT

THE URBAN CREASE ADVISOR - OLIVER SCHAPER CO TEACHER - EMILIJIA LANDSBERGIS

Cities evolve over time. City dynamics, physical social and demographic changes occur. The role of the urbanist Is challenged by balancing climate variations, functions and aesthetics of the urban fabric. In this connected world, future high tech transit modes plays an indispensable role in urban design. New York as on urban laboratory is undergoing tremendous growth and we are looking closely into one of New York’s most debated zone: The Brooklyn Navy Yard. For its history, legacy, proximity, upcoming coastal changes and the remarkable Brooklyn character.

MAPPING STUDY IN BROOKLYN NAVY-YARD PRECINCT

Map : Population density| Trees & Parks|Unsafe locations

Map - Safety |Transit point | Subway Map : Topography| Parks |Building typology

Map - Ethnicity of neighborhood

Map : Restaurants| Parks|Subway stops

Map : Public Parks |Community garden

The analytical maps inferred the potential nodes of development for varying typologies like transportation, commercial, life science spaces. Study on parks and open spaces in neighborhood led to ideation of CREASE. “CREASE’ is intended to develop self-sufficiency in a dense urban facility. The crease initiates dynamics of neighborhood by different interpretation of public spaces as productive public spaces. It is the buildings within these spaces rather than spaces within the built. These are non-negotiable components or phasing this structure to other parts of city.

JOINERY STUDY ON EXISTING CONTEXT WITH VARYING TYPOLOGIES

Crease’s’ folded geometry, is an amalgamation of Brooklyn structures and the bold grid patterns. Varying orientation of streets and bold piers of navy yard triggered to generate new incremental flexible grid structure. The design lends to grow from existing grid lines, further generating new folded landscape to creole new urban spaces horizontally and vertically. The site is folded up to large dense spaces and topography.

In Brooklyn’s community, neighborhood feelings are rooted and it is intentional to create structures that are less alienated to the public, still opening new possibilities of coherent urban density. There is sense of community and belonging, peculiar to Brooklyn. - One motive of this urban structure is to make indispensable connections with fort Greene, Commodore Barry Park and other neighborhood open spaces. - The connection between Fort Greene and new spaces in the Navy Yard is by introducing “bio spine” in the space of existing BQE. It connects across the entire urban intervention.

The concept of continuous productive urban landscapes (CPUL is achieved by joining together existing open spaces and underused sites into a linear landscape that connects more people and initiate activities. The potential environmental and sociocultural benefits of introducing productive landscapes into cities are now widely acknowl edged, and are considered manifest as essential urban infrastructure. Landscape becomes major parts of Crease, the adjacency of built and unbuilt parks, playgrounds, community corridors, cultural spaces, urban agriculture spaces etc.

BQE, major part of the Navy Yard area is proposed to be underground to ensure more human interaction across the streets. - Parts of Crease, the folded geometry ranges from large open parks to the incubator clusters for food production. This is an agglomeration of experiential development with new ways of food productions in connection to life sciences and wide-,possibilities or urban agriculture. -Transit connections are crucial in districts development and it is purposefully chosen to locate it away from Dumbo and Downtown Brooklyn, which is already dense. The new hybrid transit hub opens more possibilities of movement and public transportation which was identified lacking in initial study. -BQX is another future proposal in this neighborhood; it is combined with a leisure connectivity bridge parallel to bio spine. These two bridges ore anchors of various activities and expected to elevate the quality of living as well as mitigate with immediate rising flood lines. The organization of large massing is derived from the future flood plains and expecting the transect infrastructure to be less affected by those.

Material exploration model section

CITY AS AN ORGANISM

MEANDERING URBAN SCAPES ADVISOR - JONAS COERSMEIER CO TEACHER - EMILIJIA LANDSBERGIS Through meandering Urban Scapes the built is developed as a complex hybrid- as an organism of resources production, consumption & recycling. The project expands the potential of exploring landscape urbanism through new tools of materiality. The urban chunk, a replica of part of intervention is acting as a food machine with food production (farming) restaurant (consumption) and waste management. Intense hybridization of major typologies is explored by weaving through the existing fabric of Brooklyn navy yard. Potential incubator spaces for urban agriculture, co-working, life science and research are key factors amalgamated with other typical spaces like housing commercial, transit etc.The project agenda is to create a resilient urban structure that mitigates pressing climate issues and urban growth.

MATERIAL URBANISM Urban design studio explores material approach to the post-digital project in current architectural discourse. It ascribes design intelligence to the material itself and encourages deep material explorations in search of organizational and aesthetic principles.

Potential material recovery facility and recycling facility with Hybrid Park supported by energy efficient transportation becomes a part of infrastructure. The incubator clusters for food production hybridized with housing typologies which are developed from the existing grid pattern of Brooklyn. Design is integrated with specific landscape methods is designed to mitigate coastal areas. Infrastructure plays an important role in integrating various typologies together above grade and below grade. The complete built and un-built is speculated as a meandering path for one to explore the cohesive urban living. The idea is to consider water as a resource than a threat.

The project is part of urban design-based theory on Space Objects. One of its main goals is to get each student to understand how to theorize work through the representations they use to present concepts and ideas. Photography is the primary medium to alter and understand existing, latent space object/site they have selected.

UD STUDIO B ARCH ADVISOR - GANGA DILEEP C

The urban design studio 2015 focused on govt medical college precinct, Trivandrum India. The projects are developed as byproduct of intense research, understanding of urban fabric and more over unlearning the generic architecture perspective. To capture the essence of a city , one has to explore many mediums of research not just through drawings. The project ‘ window of nature ‘ is a capsule elaboration of larger concept open city in medical college and larger part of Trivandrum.
