f I had to find one word to sum up 1993 in our school, I think I would choose 'energy'. There is the obvious physical energy of Campbell House children rolling barrels, swinging and climbing, skipping and jumping and boisterously enjoying their school days. Our primary children are enthusiastic down-ball players, athletic users of the climbing playground and never ones to walk anywhere if there is a chance to sprint! The secondaries, whether during sports, on the balconies and in corridors, or just 'hanging out', are alive with movement, noise and vigour. There is another form of energy which is an inner energy. This breathes life into all the endeavours of the children in our school. It is the energy of enthusiasm. It can be seen in the self-confident and capable way the large number of children contribute to our assemblies. This energy
brings success in competitive activities such as sports, as well as events such as the Science and Mathematics Talent Searches, competitions for writers and French speakers, and the Solar Car Challenge. It also invigorates our classrooms, where the learning activities truly engage our students, and where our students' accomplishments lead to a genuine sense of achievement. We also need the kind of energy that will sustain us through the long and difficult tasks: the energy that is called persistence. This is the energy that doesn't give up easily, and which is needed by every student whenever a particular work task seems overwhelming. It is the energy that lets us do a little bit at a time and so, gradually overcome those daunting tasks: the kind of energy that our Year 8 students call upon as they rehearse the Drama production and during Outward
Bound. It is the energy which every one of us needs when we face a new and unfamiliar challenge. Living and learning at The Geelong College Preparatory School is a privilege. It is wonderful to be surrounded and stimulated by the energy of our school. However, we need to remember that all privileges carry responsibilities. A responsibility which each of us has, is to make the most of the opportunities that are available in our school, and to develop the talents we have for the good of all people. I hope you enjoy reading your Pegasus magazine this year. As you read it, think about the wonderful vigour and energy of our school, and the chances our school gives you to become the best person you can be. P.J. Hughes

CHICKEN DIARY Our eggs that Mrs Russell brought are going to hatch tomorrow. They are still in the incubator. We got to hold the eggs. The eggs tickled on our hand. We heard the chicks cheeping. ...Some of our chicks have hatched. We saw them pushing their way out. One of the chicks pushed so hard but he just could not get out of the shell. When we looked at them when they hatched the feathers were flat. All the chicks hatched. There are 10 chickens altogether. The chickens can walk. The chicks are starting to eat. The chickens are starting to drink, eat, poo and wee. They are growing. They are starting to grow white feathers on the tips of their wings.

When the crow came back the eagle asked him, "Have you got any tucker for me?" "No" said the crow, "I didn't catch anything today."

The eagle kept sending him back and the crow kept coming back empty-handed. The eagle thought the crow was up to something. So he went to the billabong to spy on the crow. He saw the crow running around hiding some of the ducks and eating some of them. The eagle went to the crow and asked him, "Have you got any tucker for me?" "No" said the crow and when the eagle saw the grease on the crow's mouth and on his hands and on the fire, the eagle picked up the crow and threw him on the burning flame. But the crow kept jumping out and the eagle kept throwing him in.

KITES We made kites. We made them out of green garbage bags and long plastic sticks. We had to measure out 20 metres of string for our kites. We flew them on the oval. They went really well.

Autumn leaves come in all different colours such as red, brown and yellow. The ones that you mostly see in Geelong are brown crunchy ones. I like all of them. I like stepping on them and they go crunch, crunch. I think that is a nice sound.
WEATHER SYMPHONY In our weather symphony we used lots of instruments. We used the drum, it was excellent for thunder. I played the xylophone, it was the breeze. It sounded nice and calm. We used the cymbals for the lightning, they made a loud sound. We played at assembly. I enjoyed doing it. Georgia Giblin.

The Plot So Far... Maths, how boring. The leaves brushed past the window, the tree's long arms scraping, creaking. Then the blackboard rolled itself up, rubbing all our sums off in the process. The class began to clap and the blackboard took a bow. The trees outside saw. Their trunks went green with envy. Then they all made their way to the oval. They joined branches and started doing the "heel and toe polka" around in a circle. Suddenly one of the oaks stubbed its roots. It tripped over its partner, creating a domino effect. Our maths teacher stared out the window to see what the 'kufuffle' was all about. The trees stood deadly still. Someone in the class behind her started laughing and she (our teacher) turned around. The trees scurried back to their usual places. Our teacher turned back to her window. She blinked, cleaned her glasses, then rubbed her eyes, "Well, I never..."

Running through the forest, Trying to get undercover. I have to be honest, I don't want to see my mother. I run into an ugly man, and fall onto the ground, I feel the land, but I hear no sound.
THE STARER! When I was 8 months old Mum would put me in my cot for an afternoon nap. After a while I would hear the door open. My mother would creep in tiptoeing softly taking care not to step on my toys or make any noise at all. She would be coming in to see if I was asleep. I would be lying down with my head on my pillow. I would be awake, but with my eyes closed. I would feel her heavy breath as she leant over me. Then, all of a sudden I'd open my eyes. "Huh!" mum would say. "You frightened the daylights out of me." Then she would leave the room, no longer trying to be quiet.

Moira Robinson - Guest speaker for the Parents and Friends evening 'Bridges to adolescent literature'. Beneath an array of colourful umbrellas the library went 'Under cover' for Book Week. Students listened to local story teller Isabel Haigh as she told fairy stories and urban tales to the primary students. Author-in-residence Jean Holkner related her experiences in Palestine before World War Two and also told funny tales about Jewish family life. These stories are included in her books Aviva Gold and Taking the Chook.

Susan Cartledge 5G and Anna Fitzpatrick 5F listen to Isabel Haigh's description of a witch. Children from the primary years were part of the 2nd Annual Geelong Children's Book Festival. They listened to Roland Harvey and watched a puppet performance. Upper primary and Year 7 and 8 students entered the competition to decorate the Helen Mackie Library with posters, dioramas, models, calendars and puppets which were based on their favourite books.

THE TREE In the middle of the woods my tree was standing. I had planted it ten years ago. It was a tall, strong tree with lifeless leaves that fell when the wind blew. It had a hollow trunk with rough skin and was leaning on an angle. It had some sticky sap around it and it smelt funny. In the middle of summer it was deadly still with colourful leaves.
THE TREE. The tree blows softly in the wind, swaying left and right. The wind dies down, the tree stands straight. When autumn comes the tree will change. It's leaves will turn brown and fall, one by one.

In a park where not many people go anymore, there is a big old tree. Its branches are broad and some droop over a pond. Its old, gnarled trunk towers above the ground and its leafy branches sway in the wind. In the autumn the ground is covered with the colourful leaves that fall from the tree. In winter the tree is bare and lifeless and in spring it turns green and full of life.
The tree is gnarled and drooping. Its rough, textured bark is withered and sticky with sap. Its sturdy, broad trunk is old and it looks like it is dying. The leaves are swaying in the wind and at other times it's deadly still. Nick Wright.
THE TREE. Trees come in all different sizes, shapes and textures. When I think of trees I think of old gums that just sit there all day and night swaying in the wind. When I rub my hand up the trunk I can feel the rough bark rubbing against my hands. I like old trees the best because they just have a really good sense about them and you can do anything around them. But when the thoughtless people go ahead and chop them down, all that is gone.

The tree trunk and branches are very textured and rough. The tree is very fluttery as it sways in the drifts of wind. My tree is also very tall, looks very old and has a firm grip on the earth's textured floors.
The tree glistened with morning dew and swayed in the morning breeze. The leaves rustled gently as the old red gum sat beside a silent flowing creek. Tim Driscoll.

THE TREE The tree is a tall, slender gum with a smooth trunk. It is swaying in the wind. Its leaves are long and a lovely green, some dead and falling. Most are still there and will be there for longer still. My tree has branches stretching out to the sun like twisted hands of people reaching for a ball. The tree is lemon-scented and after the rain the fragrance is overwhelming. The gum is alone in a small park. It is lonely so I want to plant more like it. EARLY MORNING MILKING Spider webs hung from the trees, slender threads laced with jewels glistened in the sun. The cows feet sloshed into the bails. The machines thumped in time slurping and sucking at the cows' teats the warm smell making it hard to breathe steam rising from the warm bodies. WAR
The first thing I remember is the sickly smell of the disinfectant and hearing people getting their teeth drilled in the next room. I hear the dentist laughing all the way down the hall and then he enters the room. I sit down on the chair and I feel the cold, hard vinyl on my legs and my sweaty palms gripping the arm rests. I look sceptically around at the machines and wonder how anyone could ever trust them. The dentist shoves his fingers into my mouth and I can taste his rubber gloves. It makes me feel like vomiting. I hear him pretending to count my teeth but I know that he's really deciding which one to pull out! In a few seconds, it is all over. I can smell the dentist's green water that he is bringing over to me. It tastes just like the palmolive dishwashing liquid that I drank once when I was two years old. It was finally over.
All that glory, all that fame, That comes from war; it's all the same, Glad and happy, can't wait to to go, Until you get there, then you show, Your disappointment, anger, fear, Too proud to shed a lonely tear, Your mates are dying day by day, You wish this war would go away, No longer proud, you just don't care, It's all the same when you're out there, The time then comes to go back home, What does it matter? You're all alone, When you get there, there's shouts and cheers, But no-one knows about your fears, They think you are the same as before, They'll never know about real war. Natalie Wright. CLEAN-UP DAY It's one-thirty on Tuesday, And the big clean-up's underway. Earlier on Mr Hatton, the hunk, Had told us to pick up heaps of junk. Monty filled a bag and a half, While 8S seemed to be taking charge. Working very hard were Coxy and me, We looked everywhere, even up a tree. One boy was caught taking rubbish out of bins, His class was disqualified; 8J wouldn't win.

It seemed to be down to us and 8K, Who had been doing well all through the day. 8K won, but we didn't care, They'd got more rubbish, it was only fair.
