PEGASUS 1991 From the Head of the Preparatory School When we think about the year 1991 and of events outside our school, one of the things that is sure to strike us is the amount of change that has occurred. There have been some momentous changes among and within nations, including the unprecedented international alliance during the Gulf War, the disintegration of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia and recently, real progress towards peace between Israel and the Arab nations.

Change is always with us, whether we are conscious of it or not. Within the school, major curriculum developments have been quietly occurring. In the teaching of mathematics, for example, our courses are requiring students increasingly to apply their mathematical skills to solve real problems. (The introduction of extended work tasks at Years 7 and 8 is part of this development.) We are also extending the use of computer technology within the general curriculum, and in 1992, Computer Studies at Year 8 level will be fully integrated with our English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science curricula. Other gradual developments are occurring in other curricular areas at all levels of the Preparatory School.

But of all the changes we can notice in a school, the changes in the children stand out most emphatically. We see physical changes as children grow in stature, in dexterity, in strength and in stamina. We see academic and artistic skills and abilities flower as mastery is achieved in a host of developmental tasks. One of the great delights for those who work with young people is to observe the growth of children's personalities; the development of social skills and confidence and the development of personal values and mature patterns of behaviour.

Life is an exciting adventure. Our Pegasus magazine for 1991 highlights some of the milestones we have passed this year. I hope that it contains happy memories for you and that it will act as a reference point for measuring the developments in your own skills and abilities as you grow and change.

Last Monday we had lunch with the Grammar Preps. The lunch was delicious, I enjoyed it very much. On Tuesday we went to Roxby Farm. First we had a look around and then we rode a four wheel motorbike. Then we rode a horse. It was brown. We all hopped into a truck with a trailer of oats. We drove a little bit then Mr Linderman pushed a pole and the lambs ate. We went back and hopped into the horse truck and drove to the shearing shed. Mr Linderman showed us how to shear a sheep. We hopped onto the horse truck and drove to the river. We had a Mintie hunt in the rain. On the Friday we went to Deakin University and we learnt about our bodies. On Monday Katie's horse and Wendy's horse came to see us. Katie and Wendy are Mounted Policewomen. We fed the horses apples and carrots. Mrs Morris and Heather put wooden seats on the oval for the horses to jump.

We went to the Baby Health Centre. We got weighed and measured. Mrs O'Donnell gave us cordial and biscuits. Yesterday we went to see Doctor Abery. He showed us lots of things and then he put a plaster on Natalie's arm. We listened to our heart and Dr Abery looked at a baby.

On Friday we went to Senior School. Genevieve came in casual clothes so she wore my uniform and I wore Fiona's. First we went to the Chapel to see Reverend Parton. I saw some pictures on the seats, one was from Sophie Betts and her family. We went up the stairs. I was in front of a light. It was big. It was very high up. We saw Mackie Boarding House.

We saw the Foundation. We climbed the tower and we kept looking for the dragon. We wrote our names on the bricks. Then we went to the Dining Room and saw the portraits of the old bosses. We saw a big cooking pot and then we had play lunch with Mr Sheahan in the Dining Room. Genevieve, Hamish and I went with two Year 12 girls. They both read a book and took a photo. Then we went to the computer room with the rest of the class. Next we went to the gym and saw the boys playing with the basketballs.

We went to the Newtown Library. We went in and had a little talk about the library.

Then we started to borrow books. There were Noddy books, Mr Men books, information books and lots of other books. After we had borrowed our two books we told the lady our name and saw if our name came up on the computer. Then we said goodbye and went back to school.

Yesterday the Preps went to see Georgia's daddy. He is a printer. First we got into two groups. We saw machines like a book making machine and a paper cutting machine. On Wednesday 4th of September Constable Ben came to school with his police car. We turned on the lights and he took us for a ride up to Middle School. We listened to the men on the radio and turned on the siren. On September 6th Peta Harten came to see us at school. She works at the Blood Bank. She took some blood from Mrs Morris, Heather and Mrs Fairbairn. We saw the blood and then Peta threw them out into a special container.

Next we went to Ruthven Street kindergarten. The lady was called Sue. She was nice, very nice indeed. We could play inside or outside. We listened to a story and sang some songs and then went home. Just before the holidays we went to Hamish's farm to plant trees. Hamish's dad propogates the trees for their farm. We got in a red trailer and went up a big hill. The sheep chased us and one looked like a lion. We went to see Fleur, she is a dentist. We had a ride on the dentist chair. There was a light mirror which was tiny and a machine to dry teeth. We went to the fire station. We saw three trucks. We squirted Mrs Morris. We still have to visit the vet, the hospital and K Rock FM. Wherever we went we had a great time and we learnt a lot of interesting things.

Preparatory Year

Year 1 On Peace Day everyone is quiet and all of the Japanese people fold paper cranes and put them down beside Sadako's statue. Lots of people died on that day.

Georgina Clarke We went to a farm and it was called Wambidgee Farm. We had playlunch and then watched Ring the sheepdog and after that we milked the cow. I saw Ring having a rest in his kennel.

Thelma and David were the owners of the farm. At the end we fed the hens. In the middle we had a hay ride.

We hatched chickens in Third Term 1991. We did not hatch them with a hen we did it with an incubator. The type they are is leghorn. Leghorns are white.

They are growing feathers on their wings. There is a leghorn in Bugs Bunny.

They start eating one day after they are born. When it is in its egg it has a cord.

It is joined to its stomach. That is how it eats.

STEGOSAURUS Stegosaurus means roof lizard. It was nine metres long and it was as heavy as three cars. Stegosaurus ate plants, it was a herbivore. It lived on the land.

KILLER SNAILS Feed on periwinkles, limpets and mussels. They have a long tongue which is called a radula. The radula has rows of tiny teeth that scrape food. If a welk is disturbed it can retract into its shell. A hard plate on its foot called an operculum fits in the hole in the shell.

YEAR 3 GO TO THE ZOO On Monday, September 2nd, Year 3 went to the zoo. Our class met at the Geelong train station at 8.15 a.m. The train left at 8.30 a.m. We got to Spencer Street at 9.30 and we got in to the zoo at 10.00. First we had something to eat and then we saw the foxes and the wolves and then we saw all of the cat family. One of the tigers did a wee on Claire's face. When we went to the bird aviary we saw a bird that had got out of the cage. We went to the butterfly house. Six butterflies landed on me at once. There was a really big butterfly that landed on my head. It was really hot inside the butterfly house and I was sweating. After that we saw the koalas. One of them was asleep and it nearly fell out of the tree and one was hanging from the tree and nibbling the leaves. We went to the elephants, then we had lunch and I liked that. After that we went and saw the chimpanzees, baboons, western lowland gorillas and the monkeys. One of them was swinging on the top of the cage and ran into the other side of it. Then we saw the reptiles and it was time to go so we went back to Geelong by train.

BOSSY BOX AND N E D KELLY Hi, my name is Claire but everybody calls me Bossy Box. I got on a stagecoach to Derrinallum. I was travelling in the bush. When we got in the middle of the bush there was silence. Ned Kelly came riding up and said, "Stick-em-up!"

Everybody got out and put their hands up. It was the bushranger called NED KELLY! He said, "Give me everything you have !" So all the people gave their money except for Bossy Box. Instead she pulled out her toy water gun and aimed it at Ned Kelly. She pulled the trigger and water came flowing up. Ned Kelly got such a fright he dropped the money and fled. Everybody said, "HURRAY FOR BOSSY BOX!!!"

Year 3 EXCURSION TO QUEENSCLIFF AND POINT LONSDALE On Friday 22nd of March we went on an excursion to Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. We went to Benito's Treasure, Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, Buckley's Cave, Rip View and the rock pools. Then we went on a bus to Queenscliff. We went on a beach walk and collected things, sat and listened and then we had lunch. After lunch we played some games. Next we went to the beach and made our monster lands out of sand. And then it rained. We all rushed for shelter. Then we came back to school and watched the video that Mrs Connoley took.

OH NO, FOUR KILOMETRES The starter fired his gun — Bang! My heart jumped and I was off and running in the big race... I started off third, then second. I could hear mum saying in my head, "Hurry up!"

"Getting closer," I said to myself.

"Yes, I have got it!" "Oh no, he's gaining!" I thought I heard him say, "Slowing down, hey!" Two down and two kilometres to go. Suddenly, on my left side two were gaining at a fast pace. He took the cheese into his hole then he remembered that he had not given the cat a present. Fred went to the cupboard and got some dried whiskas for the cat. The cat said "Thank-you" and they became good friends.

CANOEING ON CAMP We went canoeing on Gulpa Creek.

It was fun, and wasn't bleak.

The canoes were fast and very light.

We were paddling and in full flight.

Mrs Gill was on the ball.

Yes she splashed us, one and all.

It was cold, and as hard as mortar.

Our boat got caught in the reeds.

Someone else was in the lead.

CANOEING AT TARRAGON LODGE As I stepped into the boat I felt it slowly moving away from shore but luckily Mrs Gill came to the rescue before I floated down the Gulpa River. She grabbed the end of the paddle and brought me back to the riverbank. As we set off we floated down, after about ten minutes everybody was drenched right down to their underwear. It was a 9km paddle which made me unbelievably tired.

I was extremely scared that I was going to fall out of the canoe but after a couple of strokes I grew in confidence.

DESCRIPTION OF TARRAGON LODGE Tarragon Lodge was in New South Wales near the Murray River. It had a dining room that was quite large with long tables. It also had a concrete floored gym where we could play games. The cabins were small with two single beds, one bunk and a bathroom that contained a toilet and a shower. The campout site was 1km from camp. It just had a shelter shed and two barbeques.

HORSE RIDING We walked over to the yards not knowing what to expect. Susan told us to pick a horse and gave us the saddle, blanket and bridle. We brushed our horses and put the saddle on. Then we put the bridle on. At the start we had to walk. Susan said, "Now we are going to trot" but instead we went into a canter. The rest of the way we just walked but the scenery was good. Nick was on Custard and he was going everywhere. When we arrived back we unsaddled the horses and then we were finished.

Now a trip to Mr Safeway Grabbing all the bargains that come your way.

Time for cleaning, what a chore, She missed a spot under the door.

Then home come the troops "Pete clean the chook coups!"

Or "But Mum I feel sick" "Some caster oil should do the trick."

We raised $110.

A MUDDY WAY TO GO 'Splash" my head came flying out of the thick, dark mud.

I gasped for breath as the gooey slime closed around my legs and pulled me into the earth. I was dragged under and as I thrashed about I could feel the urge to suck it into my lungs and fill my body with brown mud. I was running out of breath.

Thrashing, gasping, struggling with all my strength.

Then I let go. I gave a quick draw, filled my mouth with thick dirt, then I was gone, maybe forever. . .

In Term 3, Years 7R and 7 Q had a challenging debate. The topic was "It would be better to be a snake than a butterfly." We argued for the negative side.

Our speakers were Renee, Stephen and myself. It was our ideas and good presentation that convinced the adjudicator that it would indeed be better to be a butterfly than a snake.

The only sounds are the squawking of the gulls and the persistent, thunderous crashing of the waves, that belong to a the rough, turbulent sea.

I watch the rugged dark black ocean. I can see waves dunking seaweed. It feels as though I am the only creature in existence.

On 7th of May, the Marine Studies elective went on an excursion to the mud flats of Swan Bay, Queenscliff.

A CARICATURE He is like a lamb, timid but smart, his socks are up and his shirt's always in. He parts his hair with care, before he walks, well organised into class. He is always neat and tidy and his hair cleanly cut. As he receives his tests, his eyes light up, because once again he passed with flying colours. He is always trying to be organised because if he falls behind he panics and gets frustrated. He is glad when the day is over and he can read his novel on the bus going home.

OUR JOURNEY TO SOVEREIGN HILL Our journey to Sovereign Hill was a wet one, due to the lousy weather we experienced. We set out at 9.10 a.m. on the Thursday, and much to the delight of our group, we travelled on a doubledecker bus. We journeyed towards Ballarat, with Hendrix powering out of the bus speakers. When we reached Sovereign Hill we were quickly ushered off to a tour around, and then onto a lengthy class session, where we learned about the disease, housing, food and working in the early mines.

After we had finished the class session we had a chance to eat lunch, and wander about exploring the many wonders of Sovereign Hill. We had a chance to fill out a questionnaire, with enough time for the students with sweet teeth to buy plenty of lollies, sprint down to our huge double-decker bus, in pouring rain, to make our departure from Sovereign Hill, and head back to Geelong College.

8S CHERNOBYL VISIT This year for 8S' Social Service, it was organised that a group of Chernobyl children spend a day with us.

The morning was spent in Mrs Mallett's Drama class, and although at times it was hard to communicate, I think everyone improved at charades and even learnt a few Russian words. We did some Drama-speaking through our bodies and in Gromolo, then listened to a group of music students who had formed a band (everyone was amazed how good they were).

One of the girls sang us a Russian song and a little boy latched onto a guitar and was able to play and sing along as well!

The school provided everyone with a delicious lunch after which we showed them around, spending most of the time in the Environment Centre where they had a great time with the animals.

It was sad to think that these normal looking and active children may only have a few years to live. Their -visit was a great experience for us.

WAR As dawn breaks a bunch of young men squat in their trench, their young minds full of hate, fear and dreadful homesickness as a hail of mortar rounds rain down upon them.

The day before, they arrived here, happy, proud and clean, not expecting this vicious and cruel welcome.

Only a day after their arrival they are battlehardened combat soldiers, living to kill and killing to live as they crawl through the gore and filthy mud.

They have no choice now after signing up for service to defend their country. Their future is bleak, with little chance of every returning home alive.

ICE-SKATING On Friday 16th August 8S embarked on a epic journey of fun, excitement and sensationalism.

70km, 1 hour and 50 Irishman jokes later we arrived at our destination, the Myer Music Bowl. Putting on our skates it appeared that we were expected to enjoy ourselves travelling precariously over concrete hard, frozen water on two thin metal blades.

After the first wobbly lap some people got the hang of it. Some went for a drink and some caressed their bruises. Mr Hatton decided to demonstrate a 360 degree full-on face plant. The students soon caught on, mastering the bad stack, the barrier slam and of course the two person high speed collision.

Many exciting things happened but censorship prevents me from sharing them with you. Following a visit to McDonalds we arrived back at school where parents collected their tired and bruised children.

The 1991 football season has not been as fruitful nor as successful as we would have liked. As many schools are now finding, we are having considerable difficulty recruiting boys eager and willing to play our great national game. Nevertheless, our teams tried gallantly each week and individuals enjoyed many personal successes throughout the season.

Our Under 14 team, coached by Mr Bill Jennings, was up against very good opposition throughout the year, and finished the year with only two wins. They were however, very unlucky to have not won more, as many games were decided by a single kick. In the last three matches the team played its best football for the season with wins over Caulfield and Carey, and a loss to Geelong Grammar by two points. Consistently good players were Tom Spurling, Chris Macafee, Nathaniel Ramm, Mark Yee and Cameron Day. The Under 13 A team, coached by Mr Doug Wade, were a spirited lot who grew stronger and more competitive as the season wore on. As the boys came to understand what was needed and required of them as far as running patterns and positional play were concerned, they settled down and really gave a few opposition schools a shake. They finished the year with only two wins, but Mr Wade was very pleased with team's commitment and courage on many, many occasions throughout the season. Consistently good players were captain Rod Crawford, Cameron O'Brien, Julian Percy and Todd George.

The Under 13 B team, coached by Mr Ian Henricus, was a team of youngsters who were up against strong opposition throughout the year but showed great improvement in skill and commitment as the season wore on. Not being a tall side, their game was unlikely to be one relying on marking and overhead work, rather, they concentrated on a strong on-ground presence. This took a lot of hard work and courage by our smaller brigade such as Darren Charleston, James Paterson-Robinson and Andrew Burns. All the boys became quite proficient at our running-handball game and were very impressive by the end of the season. Consistently good players were Tom Billings, Russell Hough, Lachlan Watts, and as a special mention, Tim Ayerbe who took on the role as sole ruckman for the year and acquitted himself admirably. The B team also won two games for the year.

The Preparatory School entered twelve teams in the GeelongNetball Association Saturday competition in 1991. It was a most successful season with all teams being very competitive within their respective sections.

The top College team — Scarlet, was promoted to Senior " B " grade competition where they won the premiership. This was a very admirable achievement for these players — as they often competed against much older and more experienced teams.

Our Year 6 team also managed a premiership, by coming from behind and taking the honors by four goals. Coach Carol Morris was full of praise for her players, and certainly moulded an excellent junior team.

Gold, Mauve and Pink were all runners-up in their sections and players and coaches are to be commended for their fine efforts. The teams that weren't represented on Grand Final day are also to be commended for the fine and sporting way that they approached their matches.

Overall, the future of netball at Geelong College is looking very positive.

HOCKEY

The Under 11 team enjoyed a most successful season, losing only two of its matches. The young players showed great enthusiasm and skills. Position play improved markedly during the season. The three matches played on the synthetic surface were highlights of the season.

This year the division of the Under 13 teams into A and B pools enabled teams to perform at levels appropriate to their development of team play and strategies. Consistent performances by Tim Lamb, Matthew Spokes, Richard Mason, Michael Henderson and Thomas Bridges, ably supported by other team members, enabled a number of close victories.

The Under 13B team, despite having a majority of first year players showed strong development of their skills. Tim Naylor, as goalie, showed particular improvement. First year players Rhys Hunt, Thomas Anderson and Thomas David contributed greatly to the team.

Under 15 players experienced tough competition in their age group. Both first year players and experienced players showed positive improvement in skills and team play. The team displayed great spirit against often more experienced teams.
