PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS Parents' and Friends' Association Monday, 14th November, 1983

It was easy in the circumstances which have prevailed throughout the year to lose sight of the very fundamental issues which are related to education and, it may be, that however important financial problems seem to have been that there are even more important issues that will bear down on us unless we are very watchful. You only have to read the newspapers to see pressures which are being exercised in relation to the curriculum. Also, there is strong indication of an industrial thrust which threatens to engulf independent school teachers in unionism.

What I would like to assert is that it is important for parents to keep the educational issues truly in front of them.

The Handbook contains a statement of the aims of the school. Included in that statement is reference to a "liberal and general" education. Now, if we have aims, we are bound to take them seriously, to try to persuade you to take them seriously. For, if we and you don't, then they should not be either adopted or promulgated.

I am not privy to the reasons why parents choose the school, but I suspect the variety and diversity of the reasons would testify to the variety and diversity of dissatisfactions that occur from time to time. We all expect certain things, so many things that it would be quite impossible for any institution to meet the expectations. We have to have some boundaries which may not always lie where you would like them to do so.

The aims provide an indication of educational direction; the objectives a refinement of the direction. The notion of a "liberal education" is not to be ignored or put to one side; rather it must, as a concept, be wrestled with. I regard it as significant and vital. Twice I have presented papers to the Council on the implications of such an aim, of what may be encouraged within the concept.

I have been headmastering now for 17 years and throughout that time I have had always at the back of my mind, often to the forefront, a major concern that whatever the curriculum does it must supply skills, habits, tools, dispositions, which would enable students in the future to cope with first, diminishing work hours, second, increased leisure, third, the implications of technological advance and, fourth, vocational redundancy. I've always 7

believed, rightly or wrongly, that students need to develop a personal self-sufficiency, a self-reliance that will enable them to cater flexibly with the four issues I have just mentioned.

Self-sufficiency is, I feel, diminishing just at a time when it ought to be increasing. Now this loss cannot be repaired solely by the school.

Parents have a role to play. It is simple, yet indulgent, to satisfy children's leisure by thrusting more things on them, by filling increasing idle hours with occupations that depend upon things. Things are external to the person and do not necessarily build up the resources of self-sufficiency which enable a person to respond to solitude constructively.

If we allow our children to opt out of the issues relating to the human condition, to abandon the tough intellectual debate which must occur at the nature of society and the nature of man's relation to man, then we cannot at some later date be angered if others choose to impose their perspectives on the issues and intellectual ideas, impose their

directions upon mankind. Participation has to be encouraged from an early age to supply children with that sense of confidence which enables them to believe that they can tackle the issues and master them.

I wish to make the point that if a person is going to lead a humane life then some contact with the studies which support that dimension, namely the humanities, is crucial. Similarly, the involvement in activities within the curriculum which enable students to develop their expressive qualities whether it be through writing or painting or through music or through pottery, and the learning of the disciplines of those will make it more possible for students to fall back on themselves when they have the time to do so. Those activities, and I refer specifically to the arts, and the arts and crafts conceived broadly, are capable of providing foundations upon which and through which students may be able to make a personal and individual meaning as against a collective or mob meaning.

To some the arts are peripheral, a frivolous distraction; to others they are as important as anything else in the curriculum, in life. I would not suggest for one moment that everyone can be an artist or that it would be entirely desirable. I do believe that the arts are a basic form of self-revelation and communication. The arts are both language and mathematics.

Consider for a moment, if you will, the force of an orchestral concert. An audience is brought together with one purpose — to hear music; they will co-operate with one another in a way which is unique; the orchestra, unless it is indescribably bad, will be heard in silence; the music becomes the focus of our

attention: we are united in a strange way.

Now, if suddenly, the members of the orchestra were to start swiping each other with their bows or bassoons or drumsticks, we would be truly disturbed. And if the melee continued for very long, we might be forced to take sides: I would be for the cellists, you for the flautists. Ah, yes, we would have lost our sense of unity and our behaviour would undergo a rapid and radical transformation.

Competition would have replaced co-operation. We would, rightly, associate the resulting fracas with football or some other warlike performance. I am not about to deny the virtues of football or football spectatorship, but rather suggest that you owe it to your children to allow them both experiences.

That is, it is a responsibility of parents to support any attempts we may make to achieve balance by doing likewise. You will have done your task when you have given an equitable and diverse exposure; then the children may decide.

The arts have their disciplines, their drills, their frustrations and their rigours. Persistence and perseverance are required. Indeed there is nothing which other subjects demand which is not also demanded by the arts, except, perhaps, the capacity to go it alone in the face of the mockers who, having failed to think, decide that what is different is unexcusable.

Thinking is indeed hard work and yet that is no reason for us abandoning the task. Only thinking is capable of generating ideas and even idealism. Should we, out of either laziness or indifference or complacency or seeming occupation with what is more important, abandon thinking and its consequences, then we cannot become angry because others have been prepared to do it.

There will always be those who will try to impose their thinking upon us. We cannot resist such by hiding simply behind slogans or manufactured responses. We can only

deal with such by having become habitual thinkers, not thinkers addicted to habit, but thinkers who have decided that, even to the point of non-conformity, we are not prepared to have others do our thinking for us, and this we can only do in the knowledge that we have practised and practised and practised and practised our thinking.

To wander along ruts already made is to give way, to take the rut of least resistance, the rut of least mental resistance, to cave in before those who have bothered to keep their minds alive, and attuned, and test to the currency of ideas.

An education which doesn't give us some things in common is a divisive education.

There is a point at which education must take cognisance of the common culture, of that culture of which we would have passed on. If it ignores that culture then it makes conversation, dialogue about the culture quite impossible. We all end up by talking a different language and about different things and the tower of Babel is repeated once more.

If students do not find personal and individual means by which they can express themselves, by which they can give shape and form to the deep unconscious stirrings, then their individualities will be askew: frustration and alienation will multiply, selfacceptance and self-esteem become depleted and the consequential disenchantment with themselves will be turned, sometimes ferociously, sometimes destructively, upon other selves and the institutions which bind fragilely the society together.

HEAD PREFECT'S VALEDICTORY ADDRESS, 1983 Once again the sixth formers — that's us — are leaving. And once again, the fifth formers are about to become sixth formers and the fourth formers fifth formers and so on. Let's be realistic; it's happened many times before now and it will happen many times again. As school leavers, we are not unique. However, from our point of view, this year cannot be seen in the same light as we once saw previous years. No longer do we play the part of the well-wishers — safe within the boundaries of the school grounds — breathing sighs of sadness, or relief, as we bid our elders farewell. This year we must change our role. It is our turn to shrug off the 'We'll miss you's' with an air of confidence. 'Our lives?', we say, 'in hand, now that we're done with school' Our dads pat their greatly reduced back pockets and look at their wives with a sigh.

'Where did we go wrong?' they ask each other. The answer is, nowhere. The benefits

that The Geelong College has given each one of us are numerous and cannot be ignored. I can say with all confidence that every student within this room will experience some regret in knowing they are leaving the School.

It would be nice to think that, likewise, those who are still at school will feel some sort of loss at our departure. Perhaps they will remember the frequent showers — I know I will, — the birthday singing and the building of the new Gym — whose completion should just about coincide with our last exams. I think, however, that it is not really important what we leave in the memories of those still at school; what marks, if any, we have left in their midst It is far more important to concern ourselves with the impressions that The Geelong College has left on us. Some of these things are intangible, such as a sense of values; the value of education, the value of co-operation, friendship, fitness and teamwork. The hours put in beyond reasonable demands by teachers and coaches must have meant they saw potential value in our initial clumsy efforts at mastering certain skills.

Our school has not only fulfilled our expectations as students, but helped to develop each

one of us as an individual in preparation for our lives ahead. The guidance we have received from our school is invaluable. Each of us has been given a firm base upon which we may futher our experience. We have learnt to work towards achieving our goals, better fitted, we hope, for the competitive world we must join — and we will face competition. However, we have faced competition at school many times and we know its value. To win is a reward, but the value lies in having the confidence to join in and do one's best.

Our parents may dismiss their concern. A combination of sound schooling and parental guidance has given each of us a degree of maturity and integrity to confront the world with confidence. George Orwell painted his Nineteen Eighty-Four as a fearful and sombre event. But ours promises to be both enjoyable and rewarding.

ASSEMBLY ADDRESS: Mr. T.J. Nicholl When Mr. Gebhardt asked me to make this presentation, I wasn't certain what I would speak about I have decided on reflections, observations, feelings, and, possibly even some suggestions after my year in Australia.

But, before I begin, I would like to thank the students with whom I've come in contact, both formally and informally, for their cooperation and, general, pleasant behaviour.

They have made my job much easier and more enjoyable. In particular I would like to thank my Form 5 English, Form 4 English, Form 4 History and my tutorial group.

When I first decided to arrange an exchange, Australia was not my first choice; Paris was; however, Australia was in the top five! After some early complications, the exchange was finalized. Family, friends, and colleagues, immediately, asked me, why Australia? It's so far away, hot, uninhabited, and, besides, it has poisonous snakes, spiders, and shark attacks are commonplace! they said. Looking back, it's amazing how little my friends and, Canadians in general, knew about Australia.

A year ago, I would have to say I was much the same. Australia is a country that always held a great deal of interest for me, so I decided the best way to see it was to live here and learn as much as I could. I feel that I have learned a great deal about Australia during my brief stay. On my arrival home, I will be received with a barrage of questions about 'down under'. Well, hopefully, I will be able to answer most of the queries. What have I learned you ask. Waltzing Matilda is not your national anthem; Tasmania is part of Australia; Australian rules football, like ice hockey, is one of the most exciting spectator sports in the world; not all Australian males enjoy or play rugby, all of Australia is not warm all the time; Sydney is one of the premier cities of the world; Australians are friendly to tourists; Wayne Johnston is, in spite of what Mr. Jacobs says, one of the best footballers in the V.F.L.; although not as advanced as North America regarding women's rights, Australia is not as sexist as I was led to believe; it's getting better, or maybe it's just the circles I was travelling in; Queensland is different, particularly politically; Australians, like Canadians, can be very emotive about their country; koalas are not bears; and, much, much more.

While I was preparing to leave and people were discussing the snakes, spiders, 'roos, koalas etc., I reassured myself that where I was going, there wouldn't be any snakes or spiders, if indeed Australia did have any; after all, New Zealand doesn't have any snakes. Well, much to my chagrin, I was to find out that I was wrong. One day, while I was jogging along the Stan Lewis walk, Mr.

Cronk went whizzing past in the opposite direction. We mumbled hellos. The next day, at recess, Mr. Cronk asked me if I had seen any snakes along the path! Snakes!!! All I had seen were cute little rabbits. He thought it would be wise to mention to me, so I would be careful while running. I felt like Indiana Jones, from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Snakes!

Why did it have to be snakes?! On another occasion, when I was questioning Mr. Cronk about the snakes and he was telling me about a five foot brown snake he had recently seen, Mr. Wells chimed in with some information about how much better it was since they had cleaned it up. Cleaned it up I thought? There used to be, he told me, huge goannas that would rear up and refuse to allow you to pass!

I thought; what next? It suddenly occurred to me that the lazy, old Barwon River possibly had crocodiles at one time, which used to prey on unsuspecting joggers and rowers. So far, no stories to report on this. I still don't know if they were 'pulling my leg'. I won't bore you with the details concerning my battle with a huntsman. Harry Butler, I am not!

But, in spite of my apprehension about coming 10,000 miles and not knowing anyone, amongst others, realistically, it was fairly easy for me to come to Australia, after all, if I didn't like the country, the stay was only for a year. In addition, I am white; from a Commonwealth Country; I speak English (albiet some may disagree, Mr. McLaren included); Canada has a similar lifestyle; I enjoy sports and took to Aussie rules as, Bram McLeod described me, if I had lived with it most of my life; and, I was assured of a job.

However, not all the people who come to Australia enjoy these built in advantages.

Some don't speak English very well, if at all; some are a different colour, some don't like or take to Aussie rules or cricket and prefer soccer or bocci instead; some eat different foods; and some practice what we might consider strange cultural events. But, they emigrate to Australia and plan to make it their home. For some, it is very difficult Consequently, it distresses me, as it does in Canada, to hear people speak of wogs, slopeheads etc. Like it or not, Australia is an ethnically diverse country and is a more interesting place because of it. Also, it will become increasingly so in the years to come.

You, as the future adults, will have to adapt to the changes that will take place in your society.

It is safe to remain in an environment that is comfortable and to feel protected and superior.

The majority of you live in a nice, middle class enclave, Geelong is not the centre of the universe, neither is Melbourne, nor for that matter is Australia. For many years, I think Australians were led to believe that, because of its isolation, Australia was safe. The real problems happened in far away places with strange sounding names. "She'll be right, mate", was an expression that lent an air of security to this belief. Australia is very much part, of what Marshall McLuhan coined, the global village, and the events that occur around the world affect this country in many ways. Australia, as do all societies, has problems that could lead to social unrest.

Because of the multi-racial nature of your society, people's attitudes towards other ethnics groups are very important. Your

attitudes are and will continue to be important as will the attitudes of all young people around Australia as this country grows and changes. In these troubled times in so many areas of the world, it is imperative to develop a sense of compassion, tolerance, and cooperation with people who have varying backgrounds.

This formal part of your education is very important, but it is not the only one. Your informal education and life experiences are equally, if not more, significant. There are other types of challenges besides getting a university education or a good job. One of the main reasons I came on this exchange was to experience a new challenge because my life at home was turning into a routine. My life style was becoming too comfortable and insular. When you're on your own turf, it is easy to sit back and pass judgement on others. But go out where you don't feel so

comfortable and secure, and, possibly, you will be better able to understand how the immigrants coming to your country feel. The experience can be very intimidating and challenging.

When I get home, I hope I will see some positive changes in Quebec society. The English and French have turned on each other and bigots on both sides fuel the fire of intolerance. Besides our history, one of the reasons is, I believe, because Quebecers don't realize how fortunate they are, and they tend to be insular and narrow. Generally, they haven't travelled enough and experienced enough about other cultures. The French want to avenge past wrongs, and the English want it to return to the 'good old days'. That will never happen. The 'good old days' are gone forever. There is a part of the St. Laurence River which translated from the Indian means the 'narrowing of the river'.

Unfortunately, for some, it seems to reflect a 'narrowing of the mind'. I hope this will not happen here in Australia. If I can leave you with one thought, do your best to maintain an open mind and to remain tolerant towards others. I believe one of the best ways to do this is to expand your horizons, to travel, and to experience as many cultures as possible.

and intolerance. Today, there are more opportunities to travel than ever before. If you get the chance to go on an exchange, to visit other countries, or to work in another part of the world, to coin the words that Rocky Balboa made famous, "Go for it". You will not regret it, even if it means making drastic changes to your lifestyle. It can only be enriching as mine has been.

Australia is a country that has much to offer visitors and for those who wish to make it their home. I have enjoyed my stay here very much and I plan to return to see what I have not been able to in my visit. In my travels, I have not felt that way about all the countries I have visited. The major reason is the people I have met and the friends I have made. So, I would like to thank all of you for helping me to make this year a memorable one. Thank you.

PREFECTS' REPORT Too often, students believe that being a prefect is merely an honour and that to hold such a position allows that person to remove himself from the remainder of the School. In fact, it's quite the opposite. A prefect's main objective must be to involve himself with the rest of the School community as much as possible. At the same time, of course, he must learn to respect his position as a prefect.

I believe that the Prefects of 1983 have all succeeded at this aim. At the same time, we have managed to have a lot of fun throughout the year — no, I'm not talking about doing gate duty in the rain! I think that one of our greatest achievements as a group, was the 3rd and 4th form social held in 2nd term. Of course, the behaviour of the 3rd and 4th formers was one of the major factors which contributed to its success.

My thanks must go to all the Prefects, but especially to Cameron McKenzie and Liz Dickson, who, as Vice-Captains, have helped me tremendously. Thanks also to Miss June Sturzaker and the rest of the Kitchen Staff who managed to prepare many fine lunches which we enjoyed with relish on Fridays.

Eating, of course, was not our only concern on such days. Thanks must go to Mr. Gebhardt for 'entertaining' us during these Friday lunches.

The success of a group of prefects, no matter who they are, depends largely on the response they receive during the year by the rest of the students. I base our success on the fact that the students at The Geelong College this year, are, to use a colloquial expression, are a 'good bunch'. Good luck to you all in the years to come.

Our real talent in the cultural field was not fully realised until the final day of term two; when, after many dedicated and well-attended practice sessions, the House attained first place in House Music. Much of the credit for this convincing victory must go to our soloists: Sallie Boyd, Jenny Cheatley and Kate Simonsen. In addition, the efforts of the House musicians were instrumental in our win. Thanks must be extended to Mr. Hood, whose time and effort was both appreciated and well-rewarded.

The beginning of term three saw the approach of the most keenly contested sport of the year, athletics. Our good performance in the cross-country augured well for the aths., and although we did not achieve the ultimate success; our third placing was a credit to the determination of all students. Jon Ide CALVERT HOUSE REPORT Calvert House in 1983 was one in which the 'have a go' attitude was always present. The willingness to compete was terrific to see, even if it may have led to a certain amount of embarrassment. This was perhaps best evidenced in House Music, which saw all students give their best for the house.

In the sporting arena, Calvert performed excellently. Our first endeavour was the House Swimming. The efforts of our junior "fish" Michael Simonsen and Michael Spittle, combined with fine displays by Hamish Salmon, Craig Smith and Rebecca Ramsden, enabled us to take out the Championship, narrowly from Coles House. Congratulations are extended to Michael Simonsen for winning the Under 14 individual championship.

COLES HOUSE REPORT In the true tradition of the "Coles Machine", 1983 has been a year to remember, with the house boasting several well-earned successes in the sports fields, as well as achieving a cohesion and camaraderie within the house which I believe few houses actually attain.

This year we not only welcomed the third formers to our ranks, but a newcomer in Mr. Manwaring, as House Master, his organizational skills and dedication played a major role in the continuation of the Coles spirit.

In the sporting arena we again proved that Coles was a force to be reckoned with, recording wins in the Athletics, the Cross Country and an equal first with McArthur in the Boys' Hockey. These were partly the result of several outstanding individual efforts, including Jamie Hutchesson, Jason Thiele, Tim Caithness, Craig Butler, Heather Millard and Skye Buchanan in the Athletics; Andrew Buchanan and Duncan Butler in the Hockey, and Tim Benjamin and Andrew Buchanan who gained 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the Cross Country, (despite the fact that they still haven't finished their 3000m race in the Aths!!).

Congratulations also to Shane Middleton, Craig Butler and Jason Thiele who came 1 st, 2nd and 3rd in their age-group in the Cross Country. A special mention must go to Tim Caithness, who won the Open Boys' Championship in both Athletics and Swimming. In other sports, Coles members showed much determination and gained pleasing results in the Swimming, Rowing and Girls' Hockey.

This year saw a change in the inter-house competitions, with the abolition of house

football and netball and the introduction of house music. Although not well received at first, most house members soon got into the spirit of the event, especially Jamie Hutchesson, whose enthusiasm inspired us all! Still on a cultural note, Coles showed great junior potential in the debating, as we finished the round unbeaten, and were overall winners of the competition.

Within the house, it was rewarding to see the effort put in to raise money for our Tibetan Refugee — Tseten Gywmey. The most successful of the fund raising activities were the chocolate drive organized by Mrs. James, and the' Footy Picks', run by Tony Hand and Brad Price. The proceeds from these will ensure Tseten's education is continued well into next year.

The House Night in term one — a barbeque in the cloisters — provided an opportunity for parents, teachers and students to meet and socialize in an informal atmosphere. It was a night enjoyed by all. To add to the social calendar, Tim Benjamin and Andy Richardson combined their gourmet experience and organized a fifth and sixth form dinner at the Man-bo Chinese Restaurant, which also proved to be successful.

Thanks to all members of Coles House, but especially the House Prefects, Ursula, Tim, Jenny, Andy and Anthony for their help during the year. Also to the tutors, Mrs. James, Mr. Wells, Mr. Jacobs, Mr. Terrell, Dr. Danrell and our Housemaster, Mr. Manwaring, who all contributed so much of their time, patience and support to make Coles the house it is.

HOUSE REPORT After three years of existence, Keith House is beginning to develop its own identity. A successful year in both sporting and social activities, has demonstrated that Keith has both a significant and worthwhile contribution to make to the School community.

Coming from an established House, I was a little unsure as to what to expect. What I discovered was a House spirit and enthusiasm that could only be described as unique. The other Houses realised very early in the year that Keith was not a House to be taken lightly. House swimming gave Keith the chance to unleash its new talent on unsuspecting competition. Excellent performances by Di Blair and Brad Tattersall, who won championships in their respective divisions, and the remainder of the House enabled us to finish a creditable fifth. This trend continued throughout the year. Although, we did not win an inter-house competition, enthusiasm and participation were always present It was these factors that greatly impressed me during the year. Notable performances in other activities were: The girls' hockey team

who lost the final in an exciting and very close game; Adrian Briggs, Brad Tattersall, Kirsten MacLeod, Di Blair, Melinda Gall and Georgina Bayley in Athletics; Kim Patterson and Anthony Heard in Music; Brendyn Hawthorne and Tim Hegarty in Hockey; Shane Coutts, Di Blair, Kim Patterson and Georgina Bayley in Tennis. Apart from these people, I would like to congratulate the other members of the House, who have helped Keith throughout the year. In particular, I would especially like to thank the Sixth Form students. Firstly, they made my transition an easy one and secondly, they have, by their example, made a large contribution to the success of the House this year, and hopefully in years to come.

Finally, on behalf of Keith House, I would like to thank the Housemaster, Mr. McLaren and the tutors, Mrs. Strauch, Mr. Richards, Mr. Riordan and Mr. Wagstaff for their support and guidance throughout the year.

HOUSE REPORT During 1983, McArthur House became a force to be reckoned with. Not only did the fine house spirit culminate in success on the sporting field, but the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of McArthur resulted in the house room becoming a meeting place for many students.

McArthur began the year indifferently with a poor performance in the swimming, but from there, the house went from strength to strength as the will of the students to compete became evident. Some good individual performances in the cross country meant that McArthur was far from disgraced, and second place in the debating, along with third place in the house music, gave hint of the success to come. The end of second term saw McArthur

victorious in the house hockey, and in third term, a fine overall house effort led to a second place in the house athletics. Socially, McArthur students also enjoyed a dinner at la Parisienne and a trip to Luna Park.

During the year, I welcomed the efforts of the house tutors and the house prefects for organising and participating in house activities; and I thank those concerned. But most of all, my thanks go to Mr. MacBryde.

His contribution to the atmosphere of the house and his support of all house events were greatly appreciated by all the students.

Finally, I wish Stuart Paton, Penny Vile and the students of McArthur the best of luck for 1984.

HOUSE REPORT Even though McLean in 1983 did not dominate house sport, as forecast by the well-informed few, the efforts of our humble yet determined "troops" are to be complimented. The members of McLean House are glad to compete, regardless of the often unfavourable odds, and give of their best, demonstrating the courage and enthusiasm that has earnt McLean much respect.

In McLean we recognise that winning is not everything. Not only is it a rare occasion for us but its ability to elude our, often desperate competitors is something of a fascination.

Victory is a privilege we are prepared to foresake, albeit unwillingly, for the pleasure of honourable participation.

Despite our infrequent success the cries of possessed McLean warriors were feared by those unfortunate enough to incur our wrath on the hockey field and tennis court. Combining with Keith House, McLean's brotherin-arms, our efforts on the River were — for various reasons — worth recognition as we endeavoured to effectively partake in that most hallowed of sports requiring, as we soon realized, the skillful use of an oar.

The successes McLean did enjoy were nevertheless significant and represented just rewards for concerted effort and dedication.

Members of McLean House have distinguished their school, their house and indeed themselves in many areas of sport and

academic achievement. As a result of this and the reassuringly capable administration of McLean our house spirit is always high — even if sometimes a trifle optimistic — and we enjoy what we do.

The efforts of the students of McLean are only paralleled by the contribution of our housemaster Mr. Gibson, and his able assistants in the form of our tutors; Mrs. Appleton, Mr. Hart and Mr. Mead. The task they perform so well is one that requires a delicate blend of discipline and friendship and of course the skills of a well-informed, professional teacher. The manner in which these people have devoted their time and talents, to educate and sometimes even entertain us, deserves the highest commendatioa Like all developing institutions, McLean's hope is in the future. Potential in the junior forms augers well for McLean in the years to come. To those people who will be wearing the bright red of McLean in the future I extend my best wishes for good luck, both on the sports field and in the classroom.

HOUSE REPORT This year has once again been a fine year for the "Shanimal" community. Although unable to boast of unprecedented success in interhouse activities, we nevertheless have been able to maintain a relatively high level of enthusiasm and vigour.

House swimming opened the year's sporting activities and although the majority of Shannon were much more at home with two feet firmly on the ground efforts from Tim Neal, Jamie Olliff, Gillian Smythe and Sophie Ingpen were highly commendable.

Fresh from the Head of the River campaign and a long, gruelling season, Shannon's oarsmen and women were eager to demonstrate their ability: unfortunately this was also the case with the other houses. The girls' pair, considering their inexperience, performed well; whilst the first and second IV' s and the VIII all reached the' A' final, finishing a respectable middle field in each. Jeremy Levinson's "torch-light" coxing must also be commended.

With the inclusion of the Brotherhood furniture in the 6 th form room and the attraction of having a heater that actually worked, Shannon became known as the place to 'meet'. Although occasionally over-populated, the presence of the foreigners exemplified the warm and friendly atmosphere of Shannon's members.

The highlight of term two's activities was definitely found in the cutural area of the house. The exclusion of House football and the subsequent inclusion of House music provided one of Shannon's biggest triumphs for the year. The combined efforts of Mr. Hannah, the instrumental and singing ensembles, not to mention the brilliant effort by the entire house, placed us in a notable third position. Debating also proved to be one of Shannon's talents with a considerable number of wins from the various age groups.

Term two also saw a number of House outings, all of which proved highly successful.

In fact the sixth formers along with Mr. Young and Mr. Harris became highly experienced connoisseurs of food by the end of the year.

Although not as successful as previous years, Shannon's hockey teams fought hard to play several very good matches. The boys, under the guidance of Paul Habal, Jamie Olliff, and Peter Williams were not persistent enough for the stronger houses; whilst the girls' team showed considerable talent and promise and reached the final, only to be beaten by one goal to Calvert.

Athletics, in third term, turned out to be Shannon's poorest effort for the year so far.

The main problem appeared to be people's lack of willingness to propell their legs at any rate faster than walking pace, and in Athletics one can imagine the consequences of this — disastrous. Notable performances by the usual few — Andy Noseda, Tim Routley, Cassy Hill, Peter Williams (for a fine 3,000 metre run), Nick Gebhardt, Andrew Bayley, Stephen Foreman etc. and a couple of good performances by some new comers Richard Tarr and Guy Johnstone were evident.

However, it is hoped that next year, there will be more of a concerted effort to raise the name "Shannon" up on the scoreboard, and doing so, hopefully rise above the name, "Keith".

House tennis and cricket should bring encouraging results to conclude the year's sporting achievements.

Thanks must be conveyed to Mr. Harris, whose valuable guidance and experience helps run the House, as usual, with complete cohesion; and also to our tutors — Mr. Bawden, Mr. Clark, Mr. Hannah, Mr. Young and Mrs. Champness — and House Prefects who also helped make 1983 a highly successful year.

MACKIE BOARDING HOUSE REPORT Housemaster: Mr. R.D. Fraser Matron: Mrs. M. Hayworth Masters: Mr. D. MacBryde, Mr. M. Riordan, Mr. E. Terrell, Mr. D. Rookes House Captain: John Mawson House Prefects: Peter McDonald, Michael Stewart, Evan Lewis, Peter Williams A large proportion of the College population might only know Mackie as the place which emits loud music, boys wearing moleskins, an endless supply of footballs, the sound of wildly cracking stockwhips, and students without blazers. But the "House on the Hill" is much more than this. For thirty-eight weeks of the year it becomes home for forty boys and takes on the trappings of some sort of blend between a classroom, a holiday camp and the outer of the M.C.G. in midwinter.

Within the confines of a brief house report it is impossible to describe all the incidents that have kept Mackie very much alive in 1983.

Those incidents which immediately spring to mind include the long America's Cup vigils and the victory celebrations that saw our American Ambassadors, Mr. Riordan and Mr. Terrell, left with very little wind in their sails. Such celebrations provided a sharp contrast to the less-then-enthusiastic "Bombers" movement as they mourned the defeat of their beloved team.

The establishment of the infamous "Dorm. F Society" saw the beginning of something virtually unparallelled in the colourful history of Mackie. This group of rather esteemed boarders earned themselves the title of "Dynamite Dorm.", a dubious distinction which came about as it gradually became known that anyone game enough to enter Dorm. F would be met by an explosion of some sort. As the year went by, the pressure of examinations subdued the more outward personalities of Dorm. F and our third form babies took on the "Dynamite Dorm." title — along with its inherent risks!

to overthrow the status quo in the senior common room have brought about some confrontation but like all "conflict" in Mackie it is of a brotherly nature, and foes soon return to friends.

The competitive rivalry of Mackie students has, as is always the case, been apparent on the sports fields during 1983. The presence of boarders is notable in all teams and several Mackie boys have performed with distinction in firsts teams. Sport plays an important role in boarding house life and the ability of Mackie's inmates is certainly developed as various skills are regularly practised on the oval, at the River, in the "Rec. Room", on the tennis court and, (although not officially), in the dorms.

The smooth and pleasant operation of a happy boarding house, such as Mackie, is a result of the tireless work of those thoughtful and generous people who manage the house.

Our Matron, Mrs. Hayworth, in her first year at Mackie, and Masters, Mr. Fraser, also in his first year, Mr. MacBryde, Mr. Riordan, Mr. Terrell, Mr. Rookes along with Mr. Ives and Dr. Danrell have performed what could be a most difficult task in a manner which has displayed their great understanding and tolerance.

On behalf of the boys of Mackie, I would like to thank Mrs. Hayworth and the Masters for their friendship and guidance. I would also like to express out gratitude to the wives and families of these people who have made many sacrifices in order to allow for the efficient administration of the homely working environment in which we live. Our thanks are also extended to the ladies at the Dining Hall and the School Maintenance Department who look after us so well.

An analysis of Mackie's personnel would not be complete without mention of our illustrious fourth form citizens. The strange migratory habits of some individuals in Dorm. B saw the evolution of a community dominated by New South Welshmen — a dangerous situation in any circumstances as many unlucky "Mexicans" discovered.

Fortunately this "cosmopolitan" dormitory had its influence moderated by the balancing effect of Dorm. A's more locally orientated, and subsequently less madcap, population.

As prefects, the patience and sanity of sixth formers have often been stretched by the zealous behaviour of junior forms. Attempts 22

For those of us leaving Mackie in 1983, November marks the end of a most enjoyable and enlightening experience. Boarding, and all the friendship and co-operation that are part of living away from home, cannot help but broaden the individual's horizons and develop a personality that is both congenial and tolerant. The satisfaction of being a part of Mackie, such an integral part of the College community, during one's senior education is most gratifying and rewarding. To those people who remain to continue the proud traditions of Mackie, I extend my best wishes in the knowledge that the time they spend in Mackie will always be beneficial and worthwhile.

DRAMA REPORT 1983 1983 has been a year of great involvementby the students of drama. We saw many fine performances and productions during the year, as well as street theatre exercises, theatre visits, tours and even market stalls.

YEAR 12 DRAMA The Year 12 Drama students were involved in 3 major productions during the year.

1. "The Departure" — A creative movement and speech exercise based on Kevin Hart's poems of the same name. Fine performances by: Lindon Le Griffon, Vicki Caldwell and Tim Coughlin.

2. "Julius Seizure" — A satire based on Shakespeare's play, written by Gideon Haigh and Brian Lawrence as part of their Year 12 Drama Elective for the H.S.C. Good performances from Thorsten Hansen, Brian Lawrence, Gideon Haigh and Robert Brown.

3. "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" — By Bertolt Brecht. Original songs and music

by Mr. Michael Riordan. After a successful 3 night season in Morrison Hall in August, we travelled to Lome and presented the play in the theatre at Erskine House. Some excellent work from Gideon Haigh, Brian Lawrence, Vanessa Borninkhof, Lochiel Crafter and Lachlan Turner.

YEAR 11 DRAMA The group started the year with a 2 night season of Bertolt Brecht's "Mother Courage" in Morrison Hall. This production saw the birth of A.T.P. (Armstrong Technical Productions) who were responsible for some excellent technical effects with lighting and sound. Fine performances from Caroline Harvey, Donna Strange, Geoff Rooke, Craig Pullin, Anna Doncaster and Lindon Egan.

The second major production by Year 11 students was Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Designed beautifully by Sarah Bail, Anna Doncaster and GeoffRooke, the set was a wonderland of magical effects comprising dry-ice, strange painted statues, plastic backdrops and gym mats.

Good performances in "A Woman of No Importance" from Meredith Davies, Ruth Lehman, Heather Stephens, Georgina Bayley, Margaret Robertson, Rodney Marks, Michaela Manwaring and Lisa Le Deux.

YEAR 9 DRAMA A very enthusiastic group of third-formers tackled the year's work with style and a very high energy level. Their first major performance based on the musical "Grease" was very successful.

During the second half of the year the students worked on 3 productions: 1. "Summer of the Seventeenth Doll" 2. "The Crucible" 3. Fantastic Fairy Stories

STEAMING ...."Not Worth The Noise" Nell Dunn's "Steaming" was greeted with great critical acclaim. "Tough, tender and funny" and "brilliantly thought-provoking" were two of the review snippets emblazoned over the entrance to the theatre. The set was grandiose, a seven ton, 1500 gallon bath and actresses of the standing of Gwen Plumb and Amanda Muggleton seemed to ensure against failure.

Unfortunately, it proved to be something of a disappointment to me — like the curate's egg: good in parts, but messy and mawkish at others; there was some superb acting, but undercut by some weak acting; there was clever dialogue off-set by some rather thin self-indulgence.

As has been lambasted across the theatrical press, the play is performed by several women whose wardrobe consists solely of towels, and at times, less. Hence quite an acreage of female flesh is exposed, and one could sympathise with the cast for having to plunge naked into a cold bath in a cold theatre twice a day. However, after the novelty of seeing great flaccid expanses of skin for the first time wears off, it becomes expected and blends into the scenery, indeed a little tiresome to watch the continuous disrobing throughout the play.

There were several splendid performances.

Amanda Muggleton was quite superb as the strident cockney topless-waitress and kept the whole play going at a decent pace when at times it seemed to be lapsing into stagnation.

Her continuous effing and blinding was quite distracting to begin with, but became part of the tableau of the play — a marvellous portrayal.

Violet, the matriarch of the baths, was played with sensitivity a toughness by Maggie King.

She, in effect, was the maypole around which the other characters danced, and proved to be an ideal foil for them — a measured and controlledly believable performance.

Mrs. Meadows was competently played by Gwen Plumb. Both she and daughter Dawn (Genevieve Lemon) were the only cast members who did not bare all during the play.

Both appeared in "plastics", a long, loosefitting coat covering all the body and topped by a shower cap. Dawn however, the most memorable comic creation of the night in milk-bottle thick glasses and astonishing lack of co-ordination, did memorably remove her plastics, to audience hysterics. Her brilliant slowness never protruded, and skill at mimicking the other characters made her very funny to watch.

The two disappointing performances of the play were from Nancy, the divorced, upperclass housewife (played by Lynette Curran) and Jane, the globetrotting, free love advocate (Kate Shiel). Nancy was prudish, prim and materialistic, very thinly written by Nell Dunn — and her voice was laughably overrehearsed. Jane was frankly, tedious — boorish and excessively worldly. Dunn, in her desire to find and create a representive

cross-section of society also created a rather patent incongruity. Jane was played as a sort of hedonistic and patronising Glenda Jackson, with an irritatingly practised voice reading torpid lines.

The story of the play enacts the rebellion of these women against civilisation's encroaching asceticism. When they are told the baths are to be torn down, they band together to fight the council, which is representative of society as a whole, a male-dominated society which they have grown to despise. This heightening awareness is somewhat clumsily handled, after the previous entertainment, this sudden awakening in the second act becomes a little like a women's movement slogan week. By the time the climax of the play is reached, when all concerned blockade themselves in the baths and hop into the big bath together, the forced cameraderie has become rather cloying.

When all is said and done, I was rather dissatisfied with the play after all its advance publicity. Of course it was of the professional standard one expects from the M.T.C., but I felt it was hardly worth its brilliant write-ups.

Not bad Ms. Dunn — but I think you can do better.

MUSIC REPORT Once again the Music Department had a successful and challenging year. Under the direction of Dr. John Danrell a high standard of performance has been achieved in all of the areas tackled, and several new programmes have been introduced.

The College Concert Band, now into its second year of existence, continued to improve on last year, and the addition of new members swelled numbers considerably.

Regular Wednesday night rehearsals, and a music camp in Anglesea during May ensured that the band reached its peak by the time of the competitions in the second part of the year.

The first competition that the band tackled was in Warrnambool in August where they were fortunate enough to take out first prize and a cheque for $300. Then in the third week of third term the band played in the School Bands Section of the Geelong Eisteddfod in hope of retaining the cup won last year. With some fine playing the band won first position, much to the surprise of our conductor Mr. Harry Hood, who had warned the band at rehearsal that "it is hard to win this thing a second time".

During the year there have also been small instrumental groups working during music periods. These groups also performed well in the Geelong Eisteddfod with first prize'going to the Brass Quartet, the Woodwind Ensemble, and a group of string players from The Geelong College and Morongo called the Aphrasia Players.

On the last day of term two, the School gathered in the Morrison Hall for the actual competition. The audience was treated to an array of previously unknown talent, and a polished performance by Calvert who ended up winning the competition.

Behind all the performances and activities of course are the music staff: Dr. Danrell, Mr. Hood, Mr. Hannah, Mr. Wagstaff and Mrs. Evans, and the many part-time teachers.

Thanks must go to all these people for making the year such a success and a special mention should go to Mr. Phillips and Mr. Salen who gave up much of their spare time to arrange transport, social events, taping of performances, and actually play in many of the groups throughout the year.

Ultimately the year has provided a chance for all those involved with the Music Department to gain valuable experience from a wide variety of opportunities, at the same time realising the importance of discipline and cooperation if full advantage is to be taken of these opportunities.

In closing, all those who have been involved in music over the past three years would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. J. Danrell, who leaves us this year. His efforts in further consolidating music within the College and in the broader community are deeply appreciated.

Perhaps the most exciting group introduced into the Music Department this year was the stage band. This was begun in second term by Mr. Ray Palmer, a New Zealand musician who was doing a 10 week residency at the School. Mr. Palmer, a skilled arranger and jazz musician, was involved with many groups including the 5 th form drama production, started the band as part of the newly formed "Jazz Program" at the School. The band practised twice a week during the lunch hour, playing jazz of all styles. After Mr. Palmer left, the band was taken over by Mr. Peter Hannah, a new addition to the staff this year, who guided us to first prize in the Jazz Section of the Geelong Eisteddfod.

Another new innovation, introduced in second term, was House Music. In the highpowered world of inter-house competition House Music appeared to be an anti-climax and many people treated the idea with disdain.

But due to the persistence of the House-

CHORAL NOTES The three school choirs have had a most successful year. The Primary Choir of fifty students and the Junior Secondary Choir of forty students, have sung at the Easter Service, second term Music Evening, and at the Geelong and Ballarat Eisteddfods. The Primary Choir gained a first place at Geelong, defeating Morongo College, and the Junior Secondary Choir gained a third place behind Genezzano Convent and Morongo College.

For the Christmas Service twelve students from other secondary schools in the district joined with us. They were recommended to us by the Geelong Talented Children's Programme.

The Senior School Choir, known as "The Chamber Singers" consists of twenty-two talented singers who also have had a successful year singing at the Easter Service, Birthday Service, St. David's Church, The Arts Centre, The Ford Theatre, the Art Gallery, Valedictory Service and at the Geelong and Ballarat Eisteddfods. At Geelong, the choir gained a first place in the Open Choirs Section, defeating The International Harvester Men's Choir, three second places and an Honourable Mention.

naturally the drift of the male music students is towards the band.

The greatest development this year has been the removal of the choir from the extracurricular activities and its placement within the school timetable, so the competition with sporting activities has been completely removed. The "in-school time" rehearsals in music periods have sustained and stabilised a potentially vulnerable group.

Next year will result in a greater number of Year 8 children electing to study "Vocal Ensemble". It is expected that this trend will continue for a couple of years thus gradually swelling the ranks of the Senior School Choir.

A serious problem this year has been the lack of balance within the group. We have only one bass singer, and the tenor line has been supplied by male and female altos. The problem will gradually diminish as the acceptance of singing in the school grows. In Australian society it is undoubtedly more acceptable to play a trumpet than to sing! So

In addition it is hoped that a "College and Community Choir" will be established combining the most talented singers from the College with able and experienced musicians of all ages from outside the school. With the rehearsals being held in the Austin Gray Centre late on Friday afternoons (5 til 6.30) instrumentalists in the school will have the opportunity to extend their talents to singing.

We are hoping to gain some basses and tenors from the school and from the community. Whatever the results of the experiment maybe it will at least be a pleasure to rehearse together and we look forward eagerly to the study of our first work, Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater".

ART REPORT 1983 POTTERY Term 2 of this year saw Mr. Alistair White Mr. White's stay at the School was a very installed in the pottery area at the House of creative and productive one. The classes Guilds. Mr. White specialised in porcelain were very appreciative of his assistance and pottery, influenced greatly by the work of the advice and most people were pleased with the Japanese potters. Having spent quite some results. time in Japan, Mr. White has become familiar On his departure he presented the School with this style of pottery. He has now brought with a lovely urn bearing the School's emblem, the beautiful art to Australia.

During his stay at the College, Mr. White Both students' and Mr. White's work was encouraged the students to create pots which shown in an impressive exhibition in the resembled those made in Japan, using his Gallery. knowledge and their imagination. The classes which Mr. White taught and those students who worked with him after school, turned out a large display of pottery, both hand-built and turned on the wheel. All equally attractive and original and all related in some way to the Japanese style.

HOUSE OF GUILDS The House of Guilds continued to be in demand from people both within and outside the College community during 1983. The year brought with it the return of the H.O.G. Council, which has been in hibernation since 1981. The H.O.G. Council this year consisted of Cameron Grant, Sallie Boyd, Margaret Gregory, Rodger Howard, Shaun Johnstone, Brett Missen, Andy Schmidt, Alastair Mitton, David Stephens, Peter James and William Dickinson. It has proved invaluable in manning the storeroom, providing general assistance to the master on duty and making suggestions for the betterment of the House of Guilds.

Some of the improvements instigated by the H.O.G. Council include a new card system, for purchasing materials, and improvements to the security of the store. The new card system allows people to see what they are being billed for, rather than receiving a demand for a lump sum, without any explanation.

The H.O.G. would not be able to stay open for 55 hours a week if it were not for Mr. Elliott, Mr. Wells, Mr. Egan and Mr. Cummins. The masters on duty all provided excellent advice to students and outside members of the H.O.G. Their advice, no doubt, averted many a costly disaster and frustration.

The outside membership to the H.O.G. is now in excess of 70, snowing the growing demand for the excellent facilities provided by the H.O.G. The membership fee is small being $35 for a family, $25 for an adult and $12.50 for a pensioner or student Nurses, engineers, doctors, old age pensioners and students are amongst the members of the

H.O.G. The articles they produce are just as varied, ranging from tartan scarves and furniture to hovercrafts and skate boards.

The restoration of an M.G. is currently taking place.

The James Fraser Sutherland Memorial Prize, which is now awarded for craftsmanship in the woodwork area as well as in the H.O.G., went to Christopher Whiting. He crafted an elegant semicircular hall table with cabriole legs. The finish was to be admired.

Perhaps few at College are aware of the achievements of the H.O.G. each year...I would hope we are not casting our pearls before swine.

LIBRARY COUNCIL In 1983 The Geelong College Library Council had a successful year, although Mrs. McVitty would suggest otherwise. Various activities such as the booksale, which was held in 2nd term in the Morrison Hall, were performed by the council. The booksale required the collating of many books, stamping, pricing and the actual selling. The Library council also held films in L2/L3 at lunchtimes in second term. These were held in an effort to lure students away from the warm interior of the library. The students who attended the films were generally those who went to the library with intentions other than quiet reading or study. Films such as "Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "Whoops Apocalypse" were shown.

Two social events were also held within the the year, covering books and punching holes course of the year, one being an unofficial in the periodicals, and even the delivering of dinner at the end of the first term. SOCIAL SERVICE There have been many and varied successful efforts to raise money during 1983, both on a house basis as well as in tutorial groups.

Anything from a cake stall to a 'Carnation Day' raised some $400.

A well organised jog-a-thon by Wettenhall house and a cent-a-line competition in which most houses participated combined to raise some $850. Students also assisted the Red Cross with the door knock appeal. Naturally enough all the monies were directed to be used for the benefit of the people recently devastated by the fires along the coast.

This term many students will take part in the World Vision '40 Hour Famine'. This year, and for some time past, three houses are supporting a child through either Aust-Care or World Vision.

Coles house was engaged in a 'chocolate drive' to finance their Tibetan refugee (Foster Parents' Plan). In the latter half of the year about twenty boys gave a Sunday afternoon to plant trees along the coast under the supervision of the Shire of Barrabool.

Thanks must go to some of the Year 9 and Year 10 boarders for their efforts. This is a very worthwhile project and may be resumed next March or April.

CHESS REPORT We did it. The domination of The Geelong Grammar in the Geelong Interschool Chess Competition, somewhat reminiscent of America's hold on the America's Cup, was broken by The Geelong College Chess Team.

Since the start of the competition in 1972 Grammar have held the trophy every year except once when Queenscliff High School won.

Our team was made up of a combination of experience, youthfulness and determination.

With regular lunchtime meetings, practice matches and helpful advice from our, as yet, unbeatable opponent Mr. Shaw, we were eager to win. The team consisted of, in order of highest to lowest boards, Andrew Peel, Andrew Rutherford, myself and Bruce Steel

Andrew Rutherford with his methodical, if not painfully slow games (some taking over two hours!) proved that his strategy is still the best by being the only member of the team to win all five of his matches on board two.

I played as captain, on board three. With a dash of skill and more than a modicum of luck I escaped with only one loss.

The lightning speed of Bruce Steel's games left us aghast. With an average 40 move game time of fifteen minutes, Bruce also conceded only one loss.

Unfortunately, this year only a gallant handful were brave enough to profess an interest in chess. We are put to shame by other schools, like Grammar, who can field two teams in the local competition and one in a Melbourne schools' competition. For those that have claimed an interest, Mr. Shaw has always been willing to lend assistance. His advice and encouragement were a major factor in our victory. I wish the teams of the future luck in keeping the trophy, now that we have it, for at least several years to come.

Mark Fothergill played one match which he won.

The venue for this sporting highlight was the dimly-lit, often cold and frequently noisy Pancake Parlour. We played one match per week, normally on a Thursday evening. The competition was run as a Swiss tournament.

In this type of competition, only teams with equal points play against each other. After a set number of games a clear winner should be obtained. We played against Belmont High School's first and second teams, Queenscliff High School and Geelong Grammar seconds.

Andrew Peel played up to his usual high standard as board one. Against strong opposition he won all of his matches except one, which he drew. Andrew should also be congratulated for his fourth placing in the Victorian Junior Chess Championships held earlier this year.

DEBATING REPORT Curly questions & close results were the hallmarks of interhouse debating this year.

Ross Hindson, the animadvertite acrobat of the abstruse provided the questions with uncomfortable acuity and adjudicating teachers press - ganged from their lunchtime sandwich provided the nail-biting finishes.

A new venue and new format meant good entertainment all-round: more debaters were seen, speeches of varying levels of preparation saw the light of day. The competition proved a valuable dry run for interschool debaters, and a testing and hopefully enjoyable juncture for those less experienced.

Inter-school debates are not the most frequent

of events. College figured in only two, separated by 5 months. Neither the most publicised or patronised of occasions, which was a pity, as a good standard of debate arose in both.

Liz Dickson and Steven Sewell debouched with me at Belmont High School in April to dispute the topic: "That there is a little of Paul Hogan in every Australian". We had no support, aside from Mr. Cummins and thanks to an adjudication that was (excuse the pun) "debatable", we bowed out of the Apex debating competition, in the most inglorious fashion, in the first round.

Our 23 rd September battle against Geelong Grammar pitted Ross Hindson, Ursula Read

and myself against the cream of the Corio oratorical phalanx, arguing the affirmative of "That Groucho is better than Karl". Once again, we were not overwhelmed by support, and felt rather intimidated by 150 Grammar boarders. Mr. Cummins stood in for you, doing his best to laugh and applaud enthusiastically during our speeches. It had its effect, and we walked out, winners by 10 points.

However, even my primitive General Mathematics education can handle the simple figures of voluntary student attendance at inter-school debates this year. Zero. We hope to at least double this figure in 1984.

BOYS' CRICKET After a successful 1982 cricket season, high hopes were placed on the First XI for 1983.

A promising Adelaide trip and a good victory against The Old Boys augered well for a healthy APS season, however, it was not to be our year. The results of one win, one draw and five losses does not reflect the hard work put in by Mr Seeckts and Mr McLaren, for which I thank them both.

Although a successful team is the ultimate goal, some fine individual performances were recorded. Brett Humphries made 135 and 93; Eddie Heffernan took over twenty wickets and Steven Gude's big hitting was entertaining to say the least.

The First XI is representative of the efforts of coaches throughout the younger teams, and

for this reason, I would like to thank Mr John Gibson, Mr. Harris, Mr. Happel, Mr. Ives, Mr. Clark, Mr. McLeod and Mr. Richards.

The ground staff, headed by Mr. Stuart Rankin, also deserve thanks for preparing good wickets under very trying conditions. I would also like to thank the mothers who helped with afternoon teas during the home games.

Finally, the fact that eight fifth, fourth and third formers were introduced to First XI cricket this year, promises a productive future for cricket at The Geelong College.

My advice to you all, is to take advantage of the fine facilities The College has to offer and don't wait too long for another premiership.

GIRLS' ROWING REPORT It no longer appears necessary for the girls — or "mullets" as we are so fondly referred to — to prove ourselves as worthy members of The Geelong College Boat Club; our record speaks for itself and mis year was no exception.

The girls' desire to succeed has become an integral part of the Boat Club and one which extends from the junior crews right through to the senior ranks.

This year was notable for the positive attempt to incorporate girls junior rowing into the Boat Club, with the inclusion of several girls IV's and pairs. The relatively inexperienced fourth, fifth and sixth IV's competed in several regattas throughout the season, their major one being the Junior Regatta, held one week before the Head of the River. The fourths showed much determination and vigour and came in first to win their final.

Their strongest opposition was the fifth IV who came in second, whilst the sixth IV narrowly lost their final and also filled second place.

The senior crews — thirds, seconds and firsts — competed in six regattas throughout the season. The third IV, although rowing consistently well, never quite managed to win a final. This was attributed to the fact that their constant opposition was the second IV. The second IV was the most successful crew, winning five finals; one at the Barwon Regatta; two divisions at the Ballarat Junior Regatta; one at Scotch-Mercantile and also their division at the Head of the River — which was a stunning race which they won by two lengths.

The first IV was also high successful.

Although the season began on a somewhat disappointing note (second place to our archrivals, Ballarat and Clarendon), it did however pick up considerably. Overall we won four finals; two divisions at Ballarat (in which we finally triumphed over Ballarat and Clarendon and their infamous boat); and one at the Y.W.C.A. Regatta. We then completed the season with a meritorious win (for the third successive year) in the Head of the River. It was the hardest and fastest race of the entire season, which left Geelong Grammar one length behind.

To add to the record breaking season, the first IV combined with the second IV to create an VIII. This was the first time any schoolgirl crews had done this, thus forming an undefeated schoolgirls' open VIII, which won at the Barwon and Y.W.C.A. Regattas, beating both university and club VIII's.

The success of The Geelong College girls' crews must of course be attributed to the intense dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by the coaches and the administrators.

As, without their direction and encouragement we would not have had as much success, or for that matter, enjoyment out of the sport.

As a member of the Boat Club I consider it a great privilege and honor to row for the College, and wish to express the hope that future crews, both girls and boys should experience the same satisfaction as we all have in 1983.

BOYS' ROWING The Geelong College Boat Club, under the control of the new Director of Rowing, Mr. Wait, adopted a more professional attitude to rowing than in the past. Mr. Wait introduced the experience and expertise that he has gained as an international rower and coach.

These new concepts were translated into an extensive preseason training program, which included running, circuits, and sculling. Mr. Wait emphasised the importance of coaching the younger rowers, so that faults were corrected at any early stage. This whole range of new ideas will undoubtedly benefit the Boat Club in the future.

The fifth eight, under the experienced eye of Scott Chirnside benefited from the experience of rowing in Senior regattas.

Andrew Gibson's fourth eight showed determination throughout the season, culminating in a win in the losers final.

The winners of the D.B. Ramage shield, the third eight, again under the astute coaching of Richard Morris had a successful season.

This sprint crew won at the Scotch Mercantile Regatta and were unlucky to lose the winners

final in the Head of the River, after leading most of the way.

The second eight, coached by Bob Morell, had a mixed season, the highlight being wins at the Mildura-Wentworth regattas. The season ended on a reasonably high note with a win in the intermediate final.

The Geelong College Boat Club offers a chance for young boys and girls to participate in senior regattas, a chance that may not be open to them in other larger A.P.S. schools.

For this reason, among others, The Geelong College Boat Club has a bright future, especially with the emphasis being placed on younger rowers' skills.

This year's first eight had a mixed season, finishing second in all the finals won by Wesley and third in the Open eights at the Scotch Mercantile Regatta. Wins this season were recorded at Ballarat and at the Easter Mildura-Wentworth Regattas. In the Head of the River the crew performed poorly on Friday, but still managed to make the semi finals, after beating Carey. On Saturday, College beat Brighton to go into the winners final, where they came third behind Brighton and Wesley College.

On behalf of all the rowers who have been influenced by Jeff Sykes's coaching, I would like to thank him for his five years of dedication to the Boat Club. His commitment is shown by his excellent record in the Head of the River.

Sincere thanks is expressed to all coaches mentioned, including the junior crews' coaches. The Boat Club would also not have run as smoothly without the assistance of 'Percy' the Boat Man and Mr. Egan, along with the contribution made by the Albert Bell Club in providing coaches and equipment.

As always, the support received from parents was greatly appreciated.

Finally, congratulations to the first two girls' crews on their wins and Brighton Grammar for taking the Fairburn Cup for the first time.

The season looked promising, with the return of six first hockey players from last year.

Without the usual pre-season practice at the Monash carnival, the firsts started the season poorly. Wins were recorded on June 4th against Carey and on June 25th against Mentone (Grammar School). The season proved valuable to the younger members of the team, especially Duncan Butler who was promoted from the Under 16's. Most of the time, the firsts played with a full team, although a certain Werribee traveller managed to attract the attention of the umpire.

Highlights of the season included the social organisation of the vice-captain Gary Major, and the dentistry exploits of Stephen Skoglund.

The second eleven provided a good reserve of players for the firsts during the season.

The seconds this year, under the direction of Mr. Nelson, were captained by Jamie Olliff.

They also enjoyed mixed success, recording wins against Haileybury on May 28 th, Ivanhoe on July 16th and a draw with Essendon Grammar on June 4th. Among the memorable moments, was the flicking prowess of the captain.

The two under age teams, the Under 16's and 15 's showed that The Geelong College hockey has a bright future. The Under 16's, led by Geoff Morrison and coached by Mr. Jacobs, won the trophy for the most successful Geelong College hockey team.

Thanks go especially to Mr. Nelson, for

coaching the two open teams, for the second year. Both teams appreciated the organisation and the time spent coaching and advising.

Thanks also to Mr. Jacobs for coaching his two teams to some 'champagne' performances.

The umpires, Richard Carr and Doug Hutchinson deserve a special thank you for their commitment. In spite of adverse weather conditions, the groundsmen did an excellent job in preparing the field. On behalf of all the players, I would also like to thank the parents for their support. Finally, good luck to all future teams, especially next year's firsts.

GIRLS' HOCKEY This year there proved to be an increased enthusiasm from the participants in Girls' Hockey. Throughout the season both teams met with success, and managed to improve their teamwork and skills as the season progressed. As a result of this improvement, both teams tallied an impressive score by the end of the season. The seconds achieved 6 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses and narrowly missed out on competing in the semi-finals.

The firsts gained 6 wins, 3 draws and 7 losses, with a draw in the semi-finals (missing out on the grand final by percentage).

Our results this year have been partly due to the respective grade changes. The seconds played in the very challenging B grade. Their effort is to be commended as for some team members this was their first experience at playing hockey. Much of their enthusiasm and increased skill is due to the wonderful coaching of Mrs. Farrall and the leadership of the captain Penny Vile and vice-captain Sallie Boyd.

The firsts had also 'gracefully retreated' from A grade where we had competed against university and state players to the less arduous and much fairer A reserve grade, but we owe our success mainly to our two coaches Miss Ruth Clayton and Liza Richardson; their time and patience was greatly appreciated, as was the support from captain of the firsts Emma Mestitz and vice-captain Kim Patterson.

Finally I would like to thank all girls Hockey players for making the long season so enjoyable. I hope that the enthusiasm of this year will increase in the years to come, and I wish all future teams the best of luck.

FOOTBALL REPORT Although not actually achieving the ultimate success in our A.P.S. ventures in 1983, the year proved to be most exciting, disregrading our equal last placing on the A.P.S. Premiership table. Not attending the annual TriCarnival was a disappointment to many, so practice matches were at a minimum. Eventually matches were played against Haileybury, the eventual premiers, and Carey. The highlights of these games being the encouraging play of the new members of the team.

The season began with an encouraging victory against arch rivals Geelong Grammar. Brilliant play early stunned the opposition, but consistent attacking play by Grammar during the second and third quarters saw them with a handy lead at three quarter time. However, a strong and determined final quarter saw College steal victory in the dying stages of the game to record their only victory of the season.

Our first home game the following week was against Melbourne Grammar, who proved to be far too big and quick. The first loss of the season was recorded in humiliating fashion.

College travelled to Brighton, looking for their second win of the season, but any thoughts of victory were severely hampered due to playing one man short for most of the

match. Determined play, but spasmodic shooting in front of goal during the final quarter saw College go down fighting by only nine points.

In the fourth round of the A. P. S. competition, College played Wesley at home. In wet and dismal conditions we started well, but lapses in concentration saw College lose again in a match which we should have won easily.

With morale low within the team we went into the match against the A.P.S. football "machine", Xavier with thoughts of defeat.

Any such thoughts left our minds when we learned that victory was possible. At three quarter time we learnt that we were the closest any College team had come to Xavier in the past five years. Knowing a determined final quarter was needed to clench victory the team was eager to do well. But again a lack of experience and the ability to concentrate for the whole 100 minutes saw Xavier run away to score an easy victory.

The last home game against Caulfield proved to be disastrous. A more aggressive Caulfield side outplayed College to record a crushing 75 point victory.

Against Scotch, the team were all the more determined to do well. For the first time in the season College played football. With brilliant play by Craig Collins on the half forward flank we almost recorded our second win for the season. But an overall more accomplished Scotch team proved just too strong. Although finishing with a loss, credit must be given to the team for such a memorable performance.

Although the season was very disappointing, thanks must be extended to the respective coaches Messrs. Leyshon, Clark, A. Gibson, Fraser, McLeod, Richards and Seeckts for their continual time and effort throughout the year. Special thanks must also be given to Mr. Cronk for his usual effectiveness in organising matches and to Andrew Ferguson for his effort as team trainer.

Special congratulations must be extended to Shane Coutts in being awarded Player of the Year, and also to Peter McDonald in being runner-up in the A.P.S. goal kicking award.

A final congratulations must also be given to Tim " S m u r f Benjamin's 2nd XVIII for being the most successful College team in A. P. S. football, thus being awarded the V.H. Profit Cup. Craig Smith

BOYS' BASKETBALL During the winter season of '83, a team formed from staff and students of the College tested their skills against sixteen other men's teams in the third division of the Geelong Amateur Basketball Association's competition. Despite six successive losses at the start of the season, a determined effort from the more experienced and consistent players brought the team from fourteenth position to the middle of the premiership table in the concluding matches. This, the third year of participation in the local open-age competition has proven an extreme test for a relatively young College sport. Many factors, some inevitable, have contributed to the mixed success experienced this year, the least of which, by no means, being the height, strength and experience of our students when compared with that of opponents who are twice their age.

On the horizon, a bright future looms for Basketball at The Geelong College, partly in the form of a new gymnasium. The convenience of this indoor complex, coupled with a growing student interest in Basketball should provide a previously unequalled opportunity for success in the competitions entered in future. For the mild success enjoyed this year, I offer my thanks to all current team members; from the staff, Mr. J.V. Leyshon, Mr. T.J. Nicoll and Mr. D.A. Carroll, and to Mr. B. Stavenuiter who also supported the team throughout the year; from the student body, Tim Benjamin, Tony Nagle, Blair Harrigan, Peter Morell, Sam Benjamin and Andrew Coles, and to Keith Baillie for his support during term holidays.

With many changes in mind, I approach the new season with enthusiasm, hoping for renewed support from old and new players alike, and thanking both girls' and boys'

teams for their enduring spirit throughout the past season.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL The girls' basketball season this year was one of mixed success. Successful in that we all improved with the dedicated coaching of Mr. Bawden. Not so successful in that we did not get to the finals, due to the strength and persistence of the opposition.

We can at least say that, after staying 4th on the ladder all season, we gave them a scare.

Our thanks go to Mr and Mrs Bawden for their help and their attendance to our games.

We would also like to thank Mr. Nicoll for supplying tough opposition during training.

TENNIS REPORT As has been the case in recent years, the College entered five teams in the A.P.S. competition, and two teams in the Churches' competition.

The two teams in the Churches' competition, consisting mainly of fifth and sixth formers, enjoyed competitive seasons, meeting with moderate success. The players of both teams would sincerely like to thank Mr. Jacobs and Mr. Keary for the time and effort they put into practice and organisation, making the season the successful one that it was.

In the A.P.S. competition the College entered two under fifteen teams and three open teams. The under fifteen A and B teams, coached by Mr. Keary and Mr. Bawden respectively, met with considerable success during the season. Although not winning a large number of matches, the experience gained by these young players will stand them in good stead for future years. It is a credit to their standard of tennis that many of the students who played in these teams will have a very real chance of playing in the Firsts next year.

In the Open division, the Thirds proved to be the most successful team. Coached by Mr. Jacobs, the side made the most of their limited opportunities, and with some excellent doubles victories were able to go through the season losing only two matches of the seven played.

The Seconds, again coached by Mr. Jacobs, and ably led by captain John Mawson, found the going tough against the stronger and more experienced Melbourne teams. However, the side did give quite a number of the superconfident schools a big fright, pulling off some excellent doubles victories on the way to some very close final results. A feature of the Seconds' play this year was the formidable combination formed by Fiona Brown and John Mawson, who used power play to great effect, rarely being beaten playing first pair.

The story of the Firsts' season was one of "so close, and yet so far". Inexperience cost the side many sets which proved extremely unfortunate in final results. The play of younger members of the team augurs well for College tennis next year. The prospect of exciting youngsters joining the Senior School means that the side could be a very real premiership threat in 1984.

The following students played in the Firsts this year: Hamish Salmon, whose size and strength belied his determination and courage.

His excellent stroke play brought him many fine victories against stronger opponents.

Probably the team's most consistent player was Shane Coutts who proved his worth in many fine doubles victories with Hamish, as well as some hard-fought singles wins. Craig Collins' controlled temperament not only assisted his play, but also succeeded in calming more volatile partners. Big-serving Evan Lewis found plexi-pave courts very much to his liking, blitzing many opponents with controlled aggression. His doubles partner, Robert Brown, had a successful season, using his 'puddling' style to mesmerise more powerful opponents. The grunting and groaning of Bryan "Teddy" Marsden was a feature of the team's play, and this, combined with some exciting volleying, set up some excellent victories, especially in doubles. Ambitious in his stroke play, Paul Warwick, ensured that long vollies were kept to a minimum so that he could take advantage of his excellent volleying skills.

Paul Norbury's heavily topspun ground strokes caught many opponents unaware enabling him to take the initiative in a majority of his matches.

At this stage, I would like to make special mention of the Firsts' coach, Mr. Young.

Forced to endure many nail-biting finishes, he was always calm in the crisis, and although disappointed that we only gained one victory, his ability to compose the team in some of the more hectic moments was greatly appreciated.

Congratulations must be extended to both Hamish Salmon and Ian Thompson for gaining selection in the very strong Open and Under fifteen A.P.S. combined teams, respectively.

Finally, on behalf of all students who played tennis in 1983, I would like to thank those who made the season possible. The time and effort all coaches put into practice and matches was greatly appreciated by all. And, as usual, the courts were in excellent condition all year; credit must go to the groundsmen for another excellent job.

On behalf of all those who are leaving, I would like to wish all students who represent the College in the future the best of luck.

VOLLEYBALL REPORT Our volleyball season may not have been a success as far as winning matches, or for that matter even points, was concerned, but it certainly provided an enjoyable competitive experience.

At the beginning of the season we were a mixture of experienced volleyball players, from last year's team, and recruits, who made up for their lack in experience with their eagerness to participate. We considered we had a reasonable chance of scraping into the finals.

Every Monday evening Mr Nicoll, our enthusiastic coach, and we his ten willing protegees met at the Preparatory School gymnasium to try out new tactics and make improvements in areas where we had shown ourselves to be lacking during our matches.

These matches were played every Thursday after school in a small competition consisting of teams from Morongo, Clonard, Sacred Heart and Geelong Grammar.

The highlight of our season was winning one set against unlucky Geelong Grammar... though we did come close to winning a set on numerous other occasions. However, the opposition was consistently a little better than us.

On behalf of all the volleyballers I would like to thank Mr. Nicholl for giving us his time, effort and constant encouragement. We also greatly appreciated his patience and advice and wish him the best of luck for when he returns home to Canada next year.

In 1984 it would be pleasing to see all the volleyball players from this year out on the court again to take advantage of the skills we have learnt this year.

ATHLETICS REPORT As has been the case in the last 5 or so years, The Geelong College Athletics Team could not manage any better than last place in the A.P.S. Athletics Sports, held in October at Olympic Park. This lack of success in numerical terms however, is not a true indication of the overall performance put in by the team.

For with a season of only three weeks duration, often restricted by poor weather conditions, College still managed to achieve its highest point score in the last four years of A.P.S. competition. In fact, at one stage, nearly half-way through the meeting, College had risen to third last place; a position which almost sent our mass army of 10 supporters into near hysteria.

Unlike some Melbourne Schools, College does not rely on imported talent to secure victory. Instead, it has been the policy of the School to attempt to improve the performance of the athletic talent we have got. This fact alone portrays just how well the team did perform. This was particularly apparent in the field events.

In the track events, College did not fare as well, with the only real highlight being the win of Tim Caithness in the second division of the open 400m. However other notable performances were also achieved by Chris Alistair Fyffe managed a 4th placing in the Fayers, Jason Thiele and Peter Wickham in open high jump while Phillip Black and Mark the highly competitive sprint events.

at the College. It is through his work and the work of coaches Mr. Harris, Mr. Seeckts, and Mr. Gebhardt that have made the 1983 season a success.

Thanks must finally also go to Mr. Richards and Mr. Young who voluntarily gave up their time to help officiate at the A.P.S. Sports. It is perhaps unfortunate that support such as this has often been left to such a small number.

NETBALL College netball had its ups and downs throughout the year but all ended on a happy note. Seven teams entered the Y.W.C.A. competition at Kardinia Park. Six out of the seven teams made it to the semi-finals, which was a great effort Team 5 was the unfortunate team; they were knocked out of the finals in the first round. All College netballers put in a lot of hard training nights throughout the season and though some benefited more than others, I'm sure there were no regrets about the very enjoyable season.

The fourths, thirds and firsts reached the Grand Final. Though the fourths showed few losses throughout the season they were def-

eated in a close match in their Grand Final.

College three, coached by Holly Carew, were very pleased with their victory in the Grand Final as they worked for it and deserved it. Josephine Stewart, G.D. of the thirds took out the A5 Best and Fairest trophy, which delighted them even more.

College firsts played a very hard season and though we really did have our ups and downs we ended on an up. Mr. Lancaster, our number one coach and supporter, revived our enthusiasm when he returned from his few weeks' absence fit and well. He not only got us back on top, but also the other teams.

Final and won 31-18. The Grand Final showed just how much determination and skill we College girls possess. Fiona Brown, Centre player for the firsts, won the Al Best and Fairest trophy which she justly deserved.

The team was thankful for Serrin Wylie's return this year as she once again showed us how much we rely on her skilful defence.

Heather Millard, new to the team this year, soon 'had it all together' with Jodie Henderson, both showing their stamina and strength in the defence. Natalie Alsop and the baby of the team, Angela Dimmick, were also new to the team this year and both showed a very high standard of netball in the attack.

Overall, the team was put together perfectly, as without Jenny Hynes's accuracy in the goal ring we would not have been anywhere.

College firsts have worked hard throughout the year and have achieved a close and lasting friendship.

Again this year Mr. Lancaster took an U/l 8 team up to Mildura playing as part of the Geelong Association in an All Associations Competition. This team of fourth form girls, not only won the most games any College team has won in this competition, but won the most games any Geelong team has ever won. The fourth form team did extremely well and should be congratulated.

Well, this year once again has brought much success and enjoyment to the netballers. I would like to thank Mr. Lancaster for his time and patience and to all the firsts for their guidance and support throughout the year, you all certainly made it a happy one. I am sure the netballers at The College will

continue in their success and on behalf of the netballers remaining I wish all the sixth! formers the best of luck in the 'real world'.

CANOEING For the past six years a group of previous and current students have taken part in a series of canoeing trips along the Murray. This year saw the end of this era, when we paddled from Renmark to the end of the Murray.

Although the participants have changed during the years, for the few original members, this last trip constituted their completing the stretch of river from Yarrawonga to the sea. It has been a wonderful and valuable experience for all involved and sincere thanks must be made to "Mum", and Leslie Hatton who was the motivator of the trips. Appreciation must also be extended to all the other staff members and students who have taken part over the past years (especially Mr. Geoffrey Vanderfield) who have ensured the trip's success.

BADMINTON Badminton was quite enjoyable, and probably the only thing that would have made it more so was if the opposing teams had turned up!

In fact only once did anyone turn up to play against us. Even that time only two arrived!

Things became better when on the last two weeks Corio North High combined with us to play a Round Robin Tournament. This was to prove an occasion most of us will not want to remember, as the opponents were of a far higher standard than that of ourselves.

LIFE SAVING REPORT In term 1, 14 students elected to do Royal Lifesaving, as an after school sport. After 5 weeks of hard training all of the 14 students achieved the required standard for the awards they elected.

As well as playing on Tuesday nights against other schools, there was also a group who went down to the Corio Leisure Time Centre on a Thursday night. These were people who had not played Badminton before.

Best players for the term were probably Andrew Lyons, James Dickson and Andrew Palmer.

MR STUART RANKIN RETIRES

In July this year, Mr Stuart Rankin, Head Groundsman at The Geelong College, retired after forty-eight and a half years' service. He began work as general hand to his uncle, Mr Edward Rankin, a former Geelong footballer.

During the school's 122 year history, Mr. Rankin is only the fourth curator. In fact, there was a family link between the four. The first curator, Mr. Hugh McKay, came from Scotland with the headmaster, Mr. George Morrison. Mr. McKay's niece married the third curator, Mr. Snow Hobbs, who was a cousin of Mr. Edward Rankin and an uncle of Mr. Stuart Rankin.

Mr. Rankin was employed at the College in 1935 on a temporary basis and became Head Groundsman in 1961-62; he has only left the College, in that time, for five years' war service. One of Mr. Rankin's first tasks at the College was cutting the oval with 'automatic' horses called Pegasus and Captain. The horses would pull a mower round and round the oval until they came to the centre pitch where they would stop. They stopped because they knew that they had to have their 'boots' put on! Mr. Rankin would fit each horse with special leather boots so that they wouldn't damage the pitch and then he would complete the mowing. The mower pulled by the horses in now in the Geelong Historical Centre. In 1945 the first tractor mower was introduced and the tractor we see now is the second that the College has had.

During the period he spent here, Mr. Rankin has seen many changes. When he came to the school the grounds consisted of the main oval and the' cow paddock' which had two concrete cricket pitches. The paddock is now Mackie House. The House of Music was also once a cricket pitch.

He remembers especially the 1967 drought which he says was worse than last year's one.

The only watering allowed was on the centre

pitch and the water had to be carted by tanker from the river. He has also seen the school turn co-educational, one of the biggest changes he remembers. He also remembers especially, having prepared batting strips for two players from the College who went on to play cricket for Australia in Tests: Ian Redpath and Paul Sheahan.

Mr. Rankin says, and the outstanding condition of the College grounds at all times attests to this, that the grounds staff take great pride in their work. 'We have the good of the school at heart and keep the grounds in as best condition as is possible.' He also says that he enjoys working amongst young people because they keep him thinking young.

Mr. Rankin plans to take a long holiday with his wife Elsie, to play golf and do odd jobs around the house. He intends to spend twelve months deciding what he is going to do next He said that he wanted to do something with sport that time had never allowed him to do.

FRENCH REPORT This year has been a very interesting and enjoyable one for French students, thanks to the enthusiasm and boundless energy of our two French teachers — Mme Farrall and Mme Dailey: apart from the usual thrills of learning grammar, we have had the chance to become involved in activities designed to extend our conversational abilities and increase our interest in, and knowledge of, France and its culture.

In term one it was arranged for a French theatre company which was playing in Melbourne to travel to Geelong and present at Geelong College (the cultural centre of Geelong!)

their current play, "Le Petit Prince", which, for better or for worse, was in French. But that's not all — prior to their performance they dined in the Dining Hall on a typically French meal and some French students (mainly 5 th and 6th formers) were allowed to join them, and try out their skills at French conversation. Well....there were only three of THEM, and at least twenty of US, and when one of them was keen to try out his English on us, we were unfortunately only too willing to oblige. After a quick tour round the school the troupe had to go off to prepare themselves for the performance, an excellent one I might add, and one witnessed not only

by College French students, but by those from various other Geelong schools also. I'm sure that most of us had at least some small idea of what was unfolding before our eyes (some of us had indeed studied the play beforehand); in any case "Le Petit Prince" and everything that went with it was a very memorable event 48

A similar activity was arranged more recently: on October 7 the 5th form French class (and some 4th formers) travelled up to Melbourne to see two French plays - "LTmpromptu de Versailles" by Moliere and "LTmpromptu d'Alma" by Ionesco. Here I would say that probably even less content was understood, but the action in the two plays, especially that of the second, was sufficient to keep us engaged, and we all had a great evening, which had included a French meal at a restaurant near the theatre.

Other cultural experiences have included the 5 th form's montrer et dire sessions on Friday mornings — we've sampled pear tart, quiche Lorraine, garlic bread, chicken liver pate, chocolate mousse, creme caramel and St Honore (a mountain of choux pastry balls coated in a caramel toffee-like sauce). One morning we listened to two students' account off a meal in a French restaurant in Melbourne.

In the 4th form class, students prepared dialogues relevant to Le shopping, and with pictures and sound made a "film" of it, which parents viewed as part of the French session during the Humanities evening.

In addition, the French room's walls are always full of displays — if your mind is inclined to wander, there's always something to look at — and a French lunch is offered on Wednesdays: students (French ones, that is) can come along to C13 with their lunches and converse informally in French with other students and their teachers as they eat. This is a wonderful idea and greatly assists those who go along in their struggles to find ways to express themselves in French.

What a year! I'm sure there is more I could mention, but I hope I have given you an idea of what goes on behind the door of CI 3 — much more than you would have imagined, no doubt. This is, as I have said, all due to the efforts of our wonderful French teachers, who must also receive credit for the success of their students in the Alliance Francaise competition each year. Vouloir c'est pouvoir seems to be their philosophy, for by giving us, their students, every opportunity to become interested in French and therefore more than willing to learn, they ensure that we will do just that, and do it well.

SOPHIE INGPEN Quand j'etais tres jeune (approximativement cinq ans) j'etais malade. J'ai eula varicelle et j'avais ete obligee de rester au lit pendant deux semaines. C'e'tuit le printemps. Nous avions un jardin avec beaucoup d'arbres fruitiers; deux pommiers, un prunier, un eirisier et trois amandiers. J'aimais les fleurs de ces arbres, particuliement celles des amandiers. Elles avaient une odeur marveilleuse et elles etaient de couleur rose et blanche.

Pendant le temps que j'etais au lit, je regardais^a ma fenetre et je voyais mon amandier avec beaucoup et beaucoup de fleurs. Un jour, ma mere m'a apporte' un grand bouquet de as fleurs dans un joli vase. Alors ensuite quand j' ai regarde'1' amandier, j' ai pu sentir la bonne odeur en mene temps. Immediatement je me suis sentie mieux. J'etais si heureuse que mon pere a decide' de faire ce bonheur permanent. Alors, it s'est assis a cote de mon lit et il m'a peint une peinture d'une branche d'amandier avec les petites fleurs roses et blanches. C'e'tait une peinture splendide etje l'aimais beaucoup.

Maintenant, nous n'avons plus d'amandiers, mais ma peinture est encore sur la mur de ma chambre. Quand je suis malheureuse, ou s'il fait froid ou' il plent pendant l'hiver, je la regarde et puis, vive diatement je sens les fleurs de 1'amandier. Je me souviers des actions gentilles de mes parents et j'ar une sensation sans inquietude.

Beaucoup de personnes me demandent si elles peuvent acheter cette peinture parce qu'elle est si jolie. Je dirai «Non» toujours.

C'est ma peinture et ma securite. Elle s'appelle «Les fleurs de Sophie», alors, elle sera mienne toujours.

THE CAFETERIA AT RECESS The cafeteria is a very crowdy place, during recess. The smells of drifting luscious hot pies full of chunky meat, and donuts that make your stomach rumble. You take an enormous bit into a hot, juicy pie. You can't take it! It's too hot! Steam pouring everywhere.

Your mouth is on fire. People are waiting with anxious looks on their faces, hoping the cafeteria is not sold out of anything they would or were hoping for. The long, dragging worried faces, pushing the next person to hurry up. They are desperate. Students in the background just talking and enjoying the warmth of the room. Your can of drink has come out, and with a refund of your 50$. "Great Mate!" You can see people munching on chips, biting into delicious donuts, cautiously nipping the side line of the pastry, of their hot pie or pastie, biting into a hot, light and fluffy donut and it burns your tongue, because of the hot, raspberry jam, people chewing on candy and chocolate bars, and finally best of all, people slurping on cans of drink.

OSPREY

TIGER

Broad-fingered wings spread wide, propelling his weightless body over a cliff. Soaring around gracefully on the air currents, secure and profound. With a fierce and beligerent look of his brilliant coloured eyes and great accuracy of vision he spots his prey. A piercing scream and his wings rear skyward and razor-sharp talons aimed in attacking position. He plunges towards the vast lake at lightning speed. Broad wings spread as the skewered talons enter the salmon and turn inwards powered by the vice-like grip at its feet. The osprey powers his enormous wings with all his strength and might to hoist itself upwards to his destination.

Born an athlete, a murderer with a powerful body, the tiger's black, unfeeling, but beautiful eyes look straight through you, a ghostly sensation.

Suspicious of nature, the tiger's movements are all fluid, flowing, melting into the jungle.

His sleek, massive body is alive, but concealed Camouflaged by his stripes, the tiger, cunning yet strong, slyly stalks upon his prey, pounces, savagely tearing at the flesh and blood.

UNDERSTANDING THE SNAKE The elusive, tiny-tile snake slithers across the high grass, feeling for vibrations beneath its ropelike body. Its watchful eyes flicker on and off, seeking enemies. Its rubbery body gleams in the sun as it moves. It stops resting in the blazing sun and coils up its body. A human strolls quietly past, the snake's eyes following it closely. Terrified, the snake remains in its treble clef-like position, hardly twitching a muscle. It conceals itself amongst the tall grass. Now, with the human out of sight, the lengthy snake swiftly slides off once more into a log, like the moon disappearing behind a cloud.

ZEBRA A striped,horse-like animal gallops spiritedly along the vivid countryside. This timid animal stands alert. Its ruglike head and nervous eyes watch soulfully. This animal seems colourless and is camouflaged, protected from its preditors. The zebra is herbiverous, wandering about the plains in Collingwood cheer squads. He does not possess the roan, chestnut or palamino colourings of the horse; his stripes are dramatic.

KING OF THE RIVERS? THOROUGHBRED He floats motionlessly, spying watchfully on RACEHORSE wildlife that might soon become prey. He lurks dangerously, his fanged jaws relaxed and his powerful tail ready to whip his body through the murky, discoloured water. He then dives downward without disturbance, like a Japanese submarine and surfaces. But this time closing upon the guiltless victim.

Then his whole body comes into swift motion, thrashing his way across the water like a speed boat. He stops, seizes his quarry with his monstrous jaws and wrenches his jaws from side to side like a windscreen wiper. His motion rips and tears the prey into edible sizes. He then chomps and gulps the victim down into his massive and half-filled stomach.

Here the latest prey mixes with the earlier, half digested unfortunates. He then returns back to his resting place and again becomes an undistinguished part of the carpet of water. But then the table turns, and the slug from a rifle splits his head apart. The attacker this time a human whose brain has again conquered the immense force and brute strength of this animal. All to show the might and dignity of this beast now, is a hand-bag.

The strength of the elegant, well-built stallion is astronomical. Although restless at times he uses his delicate hooves similar to a bulldozer in full flight. Always wary of what's happening, he is a frisky galloper who runs like the wind.

He is a bold and proud galloper fit to be a King. As he bolts his mane sways in the wind like a pendulum on an old grandfather clock.

His head is fine, like that of a highly distinguished V.I.P. He waits in the mounting yards, rolling his eyes like a poker machine....

JACKPOT!! Here comes his jockey. This docile creek-water colour chestnut stallion is suddenly aware, frightened.

MASTER OF THE ARCTIC The ice white of the arctic, biting cold. A cold blinding windswept desert of cold and snow.

Like a white sheet of paper, it is blank.

Chalked out from the civilized world. This is the habitat of the polar bear. The mascot of the pole, a citizen of the arctic. Silky fur when dry, shagpile carpet when wet. It's snow covered, hidden by his white. It's an albino bear, a giant toy and very cuddly. Beware!

Banished from civilization, trapped by water.

It has lots of tonnage of white, the immense heavy beast A lethargic, cumbersome animal on land but swift into water. It's silhouetted against the crystal blue water as it dives in.

Water is its home, where its weight and bulk become lighter. It is innocent, but an aware attacker, then a murderer. A lumbering, laborious, methodical beast. Floppy, plump and loose-limbed looking lazy, but it's ready; it's fierce, powerful and a slaughterer with claws capable of etching glass. When he has captured his food he then rips it to pieces with his long curved claws. It's a solid, secure beast with strength unmatched in the arctic region.

The steps descended quickly running along with gutters made by rain water that occasionally crossed the path and filtered into a puddle. Each step took more effort, the wind giving him a deathly lean. An old army coat, almost proudly drooped across his shoulders, flapped briskly in a bitter wind. He paused on the last flat corner before the final descent to a rocky stretch of land. Looking down he could at last see his destination. A glint from his eye as it caught the reflection of a bottle top, showed his satisfaction. He approached these last few steps with an optimistic new found surge of energy that helped him to reach the bottom.

On the coarse sand he dragged his feet as if they were tied down with weights. The sound of the grey sea slapping down on naked rocks reminded him of his purpose in coming and not of his tired and now aching legs. His steps became uneven as he wove his way through the growing piles of rocks. The last dune came and was slowly climbed. At the bottom of the dune he looked up again, seeing water lap further and further up the beach; his shoes sank slowly. The wind still beat on his weathered face, his eye released a tear, it rolled down his face and vanished as a thickskinned thumb brushed it away. Trying to move his feet, the pain now grew to his mind, full of memories of younger days.

Up they jump, their variegated bodies full of energy Performing their antics like monkeys showing off for children at the zoo.

Their cherry icecream faces smile broadly as they perform Baggy trousers and big shoes making them seem as clumsy as a new-born foal.

The act is ending, They wave merrily, and dance out of the arena in jerky movements like puppets on strings.

It was not many steps before he felt the cold of the sea water against his ageing limbs.

Water filled his boots, they became even heavier as he dragged them in deeper. The waves crashed against him, but on he went, getting slower now as his clothes became water-logged. All the time his eyes, becoming duller, stared straight ahead, ahead at nothing but the distant horizon. As the water now covered his face and rushed over his head nature showed no mercy. The wind still blew the waves against the rocks, the beach still stood deserted and lonely. The only sign of change was the grey water-logged body, floating aimlessly in a sea that took his life.

BIRD The bird hiccoughed, turned blue, and toppled from the tree. Seeing this happen from my window I strolled outside to see what was wrong. The bird had fallen just to be left of my front door and was lying on its back with its tiny feet straight up in the air. Poor thing I thought, for I had always felt a sort of compassion for the feathered variety since my father had killed himself trying to fly into the sun with waxed on feathers. I picked up my newly found friend, took him inside, and revived him with brandy.

The bird, Wilcox he tells me his name is, has now begun to irritate me. He has only been here for two weeks and yet flaunts himself like royalty, criticising everything I say. He has a neck tie like George Bernards Shaw's, whom it appears is his idol.

3. I cannot believe it! The bird is a dedicated Marxist and has spent the morning trying to convert me to the learned man's doctrines. What he fails to see though, is that my job at the Federal Institute of Mythology binds me severely to the maintenance of the democratic way. As much as I would enjoy following his ideas on social reform, and political reconstruction, my government monitors my thoughts at daily "political consumer courses", and I am therefore unable to follow his discourse with more than passing interest 4. The bird has revealed to me today that he is dying and that his favourite composer is Verdi. I wish he had told me this sooner in our discussions, for I lived with Verdi for thirty years and can talk about him with fluency. The bird is also a poet of some repute with philosophical tendencies towards the early Greek and Roman classics. This knowledge about his character prompts me to find the best medic in the country, for I realise that with the death of the bird would be the death of one of the greatest minds of the century.

5. The day the bird died I was involved with a party celebrating the return of the British Monarchy to the people. Everybody had consumed too much alcohol and at about midnight the bird rose and excused himself, saying that "nature was calling".

At the time I attached little significance to the statement, but several minutes later when I heard a strangled cry from the

bathroom, I knew something was wrong. I raced upstairs only to hear the deep gurgle of the drain after an ominous sounding flush. Pushing my way into the bathroom I saw the single feather lying below the towels, and knew that the bird had finally gone to fulfil his destiny. And as I slowly bowed my head in prayer I tried to imagine the purely idealistic world where the bird had now gone, and where his purpose would soon be realised.

ASH WEDNESDAY Ash Wednesday was a day like any other for me. After a usual day of school, I was travelling home to Anglesea with Dad During the day I had heard there were numerous fires around Victoria including one at Lome.

When we arrived home at about six o'clock, we learned that the fire was out of control and heading for Fairhaven.

At the time, it didn't even occur to us that the fire could reach Anglesea and we believed the Fire Brigade would soon have it under control. Everything seemed to be alright but at about seven o'clock, a strange orange glow started to appear. We were starting to feel uneasy so Dad went to the Fire Station to find out what was happening.

At ten to eight, Dad came hurrying back to tell us we had five minutes to pack and get out. It was about then that the sky grew dark like night. We managed to gather some valuables, doonas, some clothes and the animals into the car and drive out onto the street, only to find a large line of traffic, bumper to bumper, and at a complete standstill.

This was the scariert part of the night because the wind was very fierce, the first sparks were coming down, and we had to shout over the roar of the fire. Suddenly the glow and flames appeared over the top of Anglesea and the hill behind us and we thought we were going to be burnt in the car.

We finally reached the bottom of Noble Street and went straight to the river bank. We found a parking spot and got out of the car.

The poor animals were terrified. I had the kitten tucked down my track suit top, Thaddeus (the basset hound) by the collar and Flossy, our labrador, wouldn't leave the car. We were sitting at the river's edge when we were told to move as far away from the service station as possible. There was no reason given but we felt we knew why.

At midnight the fire came racing over the sand dunes so we moved to the other side of the river mouth and tried to shelter under the cliff. We stayed there until three-thirty.

We were then told to move into the caravan park where we met up with Dad for the first time since leaving home. We were told after half an hour to pick up our cars and drive to Geelong. Mum didn't want to go for two reasons; one, because she wanted to stay with Dad, and secondly, because the car's fuel tank was almost empty. However, we did as we were asked and drove out of Anglesea even though the trees on either side of the road almost as far as Bellbrae, were blazing.

We were very scared. Finally however, we arrived at the Red Cross Centre in Geelong.

We were lucky to find a friend waiting there for us with the very welcome offer of a bed for what remained of the night.

The following morning, we returned to Anglesea. The fire was still burning in places and there was still no power or water. Our house was intact although the fire had been only two hundred metres away.

ODE TO OPAYAZ

We moved the car as close to the beach as we could. It was now almost ten o'clock. The power supply to the town was cut. We were told to leave our cars and go to the beach, which we did.

We met an elderly lady on the beach, who had been burnt out at Airey's Inlet and she had nothing left but the clothes she wore. She had a blanket which someone had lent her to shelter from the wind and sand. Because we had no blanket, she offered to share hers with us. About ten minutes later, the person who gave the blanket to the old lady, made me get out to make way for a Cornish Rex cat. A few minutes later she returned with another cat in a cage and made the old lady leave the shelter of the blanket so the cats could be protected and not get earache. It was extremely unpleasant sitting in the open on the beach and we really felt sorry for the old lady.

WASHING Washing? I love it. To me, the cleansing of personal garments, as well as sheets, bedspreads, towels and tablecloths, is a wondrously refreshing experience, an activity that raises my housewifely soul high above the common lot and makes it soar rapturously somewhere above the white knickers fluttering on the clothesline. Washing is far from a grind, because I see it as so much more than scrubbing, sudsing, rinsing and hanging-out to dry (I do not own a washing machine or tumble dryer), but as a deeply symbolic act as I rub furiously at a particularly nasty stain on my husband's shirt — white wine, tomato sauce or the proverbial beetroot — I feel that I am in some way participating in the struggle of good to triumph over evil in the world at large and the stain, grease, grime or whatever being my adversary. Moreover, there is a tremendous sense of Tightness and order about the regimented pegging-out of the laundry linen and household socks. And it is I who am in charge: mistress of the laundry tub, it is my task to make order out of chaos, to remove the thickly encrusted mud from my nine year old son's football jumper, to dissolve the sticky soft drink stains which persist in staining my daughter's party dress, and, more importantly, to turn all the twisted and jumbled laundry the right way around and about, so that in each case the offending stains can be located and most thoroughly dealt with.

My enthusiasm for washing expresses itself not only in the immediate vicinity of the laundry tub, but also in the care I take when choosing washing powders in the local supermarket The decision of whether to buy Flash-O or Clean-A is an all important one for me, for it has enormous bearing on the outcome of my washing: it matters whether my husband's socks should be potently lemon-scented but a trifle drab, on the other hand, or not so terrific on the nose, but most dazzling white (even though their actual colour was fawn), on the other. Each powder has its claims concerning cleaning ability — it is up to me to evaluate whether it will be as good as it shouts in red or black letters, two inches wide, on all possible regions of its surface area, and consequently whether it will be the best possible tool in my fight for the cause. The end may justify the means, but it is important to me that they be as clean and efficient as possible.

Yet I am not alone in my quest, and it is immensely encouraging for me as I stand out at the line, basket full of important items of washing, freshly laundered and ready to be organised into formation on the battle —, I mean clothes —, line, to see dozens of other proud and noble women standing at similar clotheslines, determinedly pegging away; together we fight the never-ending battle for freshness, cleanliness and brightness and the chance to put our feet up for ten minutes at

Owing to the care I take in choosing my washing power (I do not settle for one brand but constantly experiment), I am rapturous when I achieve GOOD RESULTS i.e. the utmost in cleanness, freshness and brightness in comparison with past achievements. On days of GOOD RESULTS even vacuum cleaning cannot daunt me, and I, generous in my own happiness, condescend to actually listen to Mai Walden, although I cannot say that I manage to summon up much interest in the sordid affairs he most graphically details; my mind is full of washing — little do the kids know, as I nod and smile as Anna, the one of the stained party dress, and all of five years old, tells me about her latest boyfriend, while Michael, into football and nine, hopes to either impress or shock me as he states that he rolled his first joint behind the toilets today —; my thoughts are free-flying and farremoved from these everyday trivialities (my husband lost his job today. So what? He always said he didn't like it). No, the problems of their world cannot hold my attention on such GOOD RESULTS days.

Even on ordinary days I am engrossed in philosophising about such issues as the problem of evil as represented by the lipstick I see on my husband's collar, and how to set the world right with the policy of equal Omo for all. Washing is my vocation — I am not, as one might think, a housewife, a serf destined to a life of drudgery; I am an elevated, enlightened human being, specially chosen among many of her sex to set things right in the sphere of washing, and my interest and enthusiasm about this goal ensures that its fllfillment is far from a chore.

Thus, although I do much for the world, I do not ask for thanks, a public recognition of my services. I might, however, be persuaded to show interest in the purchasing of a fully automatic washing machine.

An essay on George Orwell's NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR "Human beings are the problem — but they are the solution as well".

"Nineteen Eighty-Four" is a fight between humans wishing to retain power and humans wishing to remove all oppression and attain freedom. We can only regard the existence of the fight as necessary. It is a one-sided fight that will continue forever, despite the stumbling and fatigued movements of the dying boxer. With every punch his strength is reduced, and with every blow his resistence diminishes. As time moves on he submits to the onslaught displaying the deceiving appearance of physical apathy. Eventually he falls to the floor and lies sprawled in a pool of blood His mind sends messages to his muscles and he senses the continuing effort as the useless punches land weightless in the air. A towering giant stands over the crumpled body and the black-moustachio'd face displays a despondent expression. For he realizes he has not yet won the fight In frustrated anger he thrusts a gigantic fist onto the broken and distorted face. For a moment, the broken mass convulses but the eyes remain open and blatantly stare back in defiance. The black-moustachio'd face cannot return the stare, for he senses that at the essence of its existence, the mangled heap will never submit and will always continue to fight.

It is that inherent instinct that motivates prevalent; an inherited instinct which enWinston Smith, and it is the opposing stimulus forced one to believe that certain aspects of that Big Brother must continually serve. As "Nineteen Eighty-Four" progresses, a realization emerges that in this controlled world of Big Brother man is being reduced to a frightened and pathetic creature whose existence is rapidly beginning to resemble that of a programmed moron.

It is Winston's hope and faith in human nature that enable him to continue despite the crushing weight of his acquired knowledge.

One would expect this "hope" to have been destroyed and yet it seems to have remained

CREATIVE ARTS FELLOWSHIPS AT THE GEELONG COLLEGE facility with imagery that I have devoted most attention. This, I believe, develops a power of thinking neglected in other disciplines, including formal English. It is the power of thinking with the senses and the nerves, which is a kind of thinking that aims not only at accuracy, but a vividness as well.

My creative writing classes have also involved getting students to write poems within formal limits, haiku, quatrains and so on, but by far the most important faculty to develop, in my view, has been this ability to use imagery effectively in their thinking and writing.

I have enjoyed three residencies at The Geelong College, a two week stint in 1978, and an eight week stint in both 1982 and 1983.

How does an artist in residence benefit the education of students? The most immediate answer to this question is that he or she can talk about art, be it a painting, a piece of music, a novel or poem, from the perspective of how it has been made. I am a poet, a novelist and a literary journalist. In talking to a class about how a particular poem of mine came into existence I hope I have been able to impart, not primarily anything specifically useful to my own work, but a more general impression as to how poems are generated in the human mind, and some idea of how the mind sets about organizing the material it has generated. This requires an intimacy with these mental processes that only the artist is in a position to have. In a sense this is outside the curriculum because the curriculum begins with the poem on the page or the painting on the canvas while the artist's explanation ends there. But the explanation is useful, I think, because while it does not (one hopes) diminish the magic of art, it does give it an anchor in actual human experience, the experience of making things.

There are other ways in which an artist in residence can benefit the education of students and the life of the College. Artists, writers, musicians tend to know each other. It may be an immodest thing for me to say, but I myself have longstanding friendships with leading Australian poets such as Les Murray, A D .

Hope, Rosemary Dobson. I was a friend of the late David Campbell. I have an acquaintance with poets such as Bruce Dawe and Judith Wright, and many other younger poets. The point is this: most of the names I have mentioned above appear regularly on the curriculum from year to year, and I would like to think that through my friendships and acquaintanceships with these people I have gained perspectives on their various works that are not so readily available to other teachers, and which I can offer to enliven discussion of their works in classes. I have found myself able to do this when talking about the poems of Les Murray and David Campbell. The point I would emphasise is that this is a natural advantage all but the most reclusive of Australian artists have.

The interests of artists are unpredictable, and their attitude to knowledge is often magpielike. This can be an advantage to the curriculum in surprising ways. At least two poet friends of mine would be well equipped to talk in botany classes on Australian vegetation. Another could make useful contributions to agricultural or farm mechanics courses, and I myself have found I am in a

Naturally my discourse on how I go about making poems or novels or critical articles can be extended to how the students might best go about doing the same. I have engaged in many creative writing classes during my various stints at the College. Some of these classes have been over a long programme of, say eight lessons, and some have been for no more than a couple. Generally I have found students reluctant to substitute imagery for adjectives, and it is to developing their

position to offer something useful in that part of the English curriculum that deals with world mythology. My point here is that the resources available to the College in having an artist in residence are incalculable (that is to say, not subject to easy calculation rather than immeasureable) and that the artist may be able to offer enlivening perspectives in disciplines outside the discipline to which he or she is formally attached Naturally an artist in residence will be a catalyst for extra-curricula activities. As a poet in residence I have given poetry readings at the school and have offered advice to students who have brought me their own writing. A musician in residence would certainly be a focus for recitals, a painter for exhibitions, and so on.

So far I have described some of the ways an artist in residence can contribute to the life of the College. I would now like to turn my attention to the way in which the kind of patronage that the College offers to the arts in Australia is not only useful, courageous and generous, but in a general way vital to the development of artistic expression in Australia so long as the current attitudes and provisions regarding artistic patronage prevail.

The College provides at a strictly material level, accommodation, meals, and for those that need it, workshop space. It also pays a handsome fee, and travel expenses. The fee is important for two reasons. Firstly, it is a recognition, ultimately the only kind of recognition that counts, that art is work. I shall return to this point later. Secondly, with accommodation and living expenses found, the artist is able to use a good deal of his fee to meet living expenses incurred after his residency is over. He is able to buy time to work, and that is a blessing.

In return for these material benefits I, and I assume other artists in residence at the College, have taught between eight and ten periods per week, slotting in to various parts of the curriculum. The rest of the time I have had for my own writing. This has enabled me, at various times in my three stints at the College, to write a final draft of a novel, to write poems that have gone into my second and third volumes of verse and that will be going into my fourth, and to do some review work as well. Of course all this writing could have been done if I had not had any fellowships at the College, but it would have taken longer, and it would have suffered by the disruptions occasioned in my taking piecemeal work outside the work of writing in

order to be able to pay for that time during which I write.

Most writers in Australia, and I believe it is true of painters and composers, are forced to take on irrelevant work, that is to say work outside the vocation that is most urgent to them, in order to be able to pay for that vocation. In my case I take relief teaching in Canberra schools. It is irrelevant work from my viewpoint (though I do not doubt its social usefulness) but it has a certain convenience. It pays well and there are frequent, though unpredictable, days when a job does not come up and I can be at my desk. But it is disruptive. An idea or train of thought that generates itself at eight-thirty in the morning often has to be abandoned when the telephone rings and a school requests my services. (To refuse such a request very soon results in no relief-work being offered: the convenience is skin deep.) Artists with similar part-time! work, and indeed those who have full-time positions, will recognize the dilemma here.

Earning a living solely from the selling or practising of art is currently impossible in Australia. This usually means taking outside employment, certainly in those periods between Australia Council grants or residencies in Universities. Outside employment leads to disruptions of one's real work, and disrupted art is bad art, or at least art that has not had the opportunity to realize itself in the way it could if the artist had been able to devote his undivided attention to it.

So, there are two things of paramount importance to an artist; to have his work accorded the dignity of being recognized by the society as work, and not a hobby or idiosyncracy, and to have peace and time to pursue it.

I have found that the arrangements at The Geelong College accord very well with these two requirements. The teaching of the eight to ten periods in a week is not an excessive teaching load. It is sufficient for the artist to feel he is justifying his presence in the school and to the students. More importantly it allows him, not only the ample time in which to pursue his own work, but the ability to plan that time such that the classes he teaches offer a minimum of disruption. Furthermore, the residencies can be a little in the nature of a 'retreat'. Removal from home, and the many distractions that home entails have meant, in my case certainly, that I have been able to achieve more in my eight week stints than I generally do in an average eight week period over school holidays when I am based in my own study.

So far as I know the College is the only school in Australia to have a regular Artist in Residence programme, though other schools do, I know, bring in artists for a day, or for weekend workshops and so on. There are of course other forms of patronage in Australia.

I have mentioned Australia Council grants and Residencies at Universities and Colleges of Advanced Education. There is also some State government funding and the various literary and painting prizes that are offered annually. All these are valuable in keeping the arts alive in Australia.

But how does one justify spending money on the arts as a general principle? Why shouldn't an artist sink or swim in the market place just as other vocations and trades are compelled to do?

Some popular novelists are able to live comfortably from the earnings of their books.

One or two painters can do the same. But I know that for most writers, particularly poets, this is impossible. There are simply not enough readers of poetry, short stories or novels in this country to buy a sufficient number of an author's books to enable him to earn anything like a salary commensurate with the time and effort that has gone into the writing of the work. Australian publishers and promoters are not powerful or enterprising enough to be able to prosecute the sales of Australian books effectively in other English speaking countries, and publishers in those countries, have on the whole been uninterested in publishing Australian titles. This has changed a little recently, but it is still true that very few Australian writers of talent reach anything like the audience in America or Britain that authors of similar or even inferior talent can expect to reach in Australia from those countries. The plight of Australian authors is compounded by the inefficiency of book distribution within Australia, and the utterly mediocre reviewing and criticism that is to be found in most Australian newspapers and journals at this time.

It is not that poetry, and works of literary merit generally, do not sell. In fact, per head of population, the number of poetry books that sell in Australia is quite favourable when compared to other countries. But whereas an American publisher can afford to do a run of, say, 15,000 copies for an up-and-coming poet, an Australian publisher can only risk between 700 and 1,500. At 10% per copy an author is making a pittance on his two or three years' work.

Thus, there needs to be some recognition by a society that some of its endeavours are valuable without being economically viable.

This is a principle that has always been recognized by some individuals within societies, hence the aristocratic patronage of the arts in earlier centuries, but recognition of this principle by the state has been comparatively recent and is still, I dare to hope, not a complete recognition with an abiding policy.

Such an abiding policy would involve the paying of a given number of artists a regular salary, adjustable, of course, according to how the fortunes of their works fluctuated.

For a full account of such a scheme I recommend Les Murray's essay 'Patronage in Australia' ("The Peasant Mandarin", UQP 1978).

When it is looked at from one angle, patronage of the arts is never entirely a handout Artists, particularly poets, if they are any good will continue to earn money from their work after they are dead and gone. This is not true of most other occupations. If a poet had a lifespan of, say, two hundred years, he might be quite self-supporting for the last eighty years of his life on the basis of those works he wrote in the first eighty years. Think how fabulously rich Shakespeare would have been had his physical presence remained to enjoy the royalties on his work as they accrued after 1616. Even quite minor poets such as Coventry Patmore or Thomas Hood might have made a comfortable living from anthology rights and so on if by some miracle they had been granted life during the entire life of their works. The same can be argued for Van Gogh, the penniless impressionists, and so on. Death penalizes the livelihoods of artists in more ways than one.

For this reason, patronage might be seen more in the nature of a long term investment than a handout Of course the patron is not usually the one who receives the dividend, but undeniably the society does insofar as its literary, artistic, or musical tradition is enriched — has been able to be enriched because an artist has been given the material

security and the freedom from disruption that he needs in order to get on with writing poems, painting pictures or composing scores.

The Geelong College approaches the patronage of the arts with more intelligence, sensitivity and courage than most of the other patrons of the arts that I am familiar with in Australia. This is heartening, and not simply for immediate reasons of morale. The leadership in this country is at present drawn from private school backgrounds more than it is from state school backgrounds, and this is true of whichever political party is in power. I state this, not as a preference, but as a fact There seems every reason to believe that this state of affairs will continue, and that the generation of students going through The Geelong College in the 1970's and 1980's will one day find themselves in positions of responsibility in government and elsewhere.

If, during the course of their education, they have had the opportunity to work closely with Australian artists of all kinds, have been familiar with artistic patronage, and have gained an appreciation of the value of art in the health of a society and a culture, then it is more likely that the tradition of intelligent and sensitive patronage of the arts will persist when they eventually hold those positions of responsibility.

CHRISTMAS ADDRESS It is an odd thing that this time of the year, the last few weeks before Christmas, is both an end and a beginning. This is the end of the days, weeks and months of the year, the end of work, and the end of school. And it is the beginning of something new, that slips quietly, almost unnoticed, beneath our desire for rest and recreation. This is the time of year that the Church calls "Advent", when people remember and look for the birth of Jesus. It is the time for recreation, but also it is the time for re-creation, the time to create our selves again.

In Europe, it is almost always cold now, the days short and the darkness pressing in around both mornings and evenings, and there one waits for Christmas thinking perhaps of the shepherds who kept watch over their flock by night. Yet here, as far away from where Jesus was born as there can be on earth, we wait for Christmas in days of increasing warmth and light, and this, also, is appropriate. The new order of things that begins now, the beginning of the spiritual year, passes underneath our last days of work, going past quietly, a little out of step with the demands of work, though not quite in silence. It is like the first days of summer. It is not that this new time, the time of birth and of spiritual re-birth, does not see the old year, the time of work; it is not that the spiritual year has nothing to do with the old year.

Rather, it is that this period leading up to Christmas comes as a possible answer to the gnat-cloud of questions the old year has asked of us and which we still perhaps cannot answer. And yet the answer is quiet, almost unheard, and different for each of us. All our questions, all of our words, weigh us down; they bring us closer to the spiritual world that moves beneath us, rising slowly to the surface, towards the day we call Christmas when our words are perhaps answered by the one Word of God whom we know as Christ.

ening when they went to see the Child in the barn. I doubt if the Child's Mother knew much about what was to happen in the years to come. Perhaps, though, if they looked up at the stars that night they may have felt the great emptiness that surrounds the earth, and felt the loneliness that each of us feels from time to time when there is only you and the wideness of night Yet, if one of them happened by chance to look down into the street and saw one of those stars reflected in a pool of water, no more than a foot away, he may have understood far more of what was happening that night than those who saw a child asleep in the straw. For us, now, on the other side of the world, the stars are even further away than they were for the shepherds.

We know that the starlight that reaches us now set out thousands of years ago, and its long journey, ending perhaps in a river at night, seems meaningless. Yet it is precisely in that complete absence of meaning, when all the things that fill up our days seem to add up to nothing, that one is open to God. What is it, you may ask, to be open to God? I cannot tell you much about it, for most of us, most of the time, are closed to God as tightly as stones to the air. And we are closed to God, even those of us who believe there is a God, precisely to the extent to which we think we know what God is, and under what conditions He will come to us. Whenever we form an image of God we make an idol that God will smash, whether we like it or not.

Whenever we try to tie God down, to an image or to a set of words, even a prayer, we find that there is nothing there, and persuade ourselves that there is no God, that we have been deluding ourselves. It is like trying to solve a difficult equation and, in the end, finding that the answer is zero. But God is

It is fitting, then, that we wait for Christmas in the summer, for Jesus brings us light and not darkness. For us, it is a light we cannot measure and which we can only know, most of the time, by our shadows, the darkness we carry around before us or behind us. And yet we can come close to God, and begin to understand something of His plan for us, when we think of the shepherds waiting in the fields underneath the stars. I doubt if the shepherds had any idea of what was happ-

nothing like an equation, and the question that the word "God" poses to each of us, in ways that are endlessly different, can never be solved finally. If there is any one way to be open to God it is to be found in the openness to experience that we call waiting. We wait for God even when we think we know what God is all about: we wait for God to show Himself in the cracks of the idols we make.

These weeks before Christmas are a time of waiting. We wait for Jesus to come. But if we wait patiently and openly until Christmas and nothing comes, if there is no change in how you feel about God, you have not waited in vain. You have just learnt a little about what it is like to wait for God, and you have come closer to God by that experience of waiting. There is another year ahead, tightly folded in your anticipations of what will come and what you cannot anticipate, and the coming year, too, will require you to wait before you learn more of God. Perhaps it seems to you that God is content to leave us alone, ignorant of His existence. But this is not so.

The earth is covered with the footprints of God. It is like being lost somewhere and finding a path used long ago by someone else.

The track is hard to make out, and sometimes you lose it and have to find it again. You do not know where it leads, and there is no guarantee that it will lead you where you wish to go. And yet you trust the track: it is your only hope. You walk along the track, and you wait for it to lead you somewhere. At times you wonder if the person who made the track got out alive; you think that you may turn a corner and find a skeleton. The difference between believing in God and not believing in God is that, if you believe in God, you believe that the track was made by Him, and that, whatever happens, you are trying the follow in His tracks. The difference between being a Christian and not being a Christian, is that you believe, beyond the possibility of any proof, that the track was made by a man whose name is Jesus.

And so, in these last few weeks of the year that are also the first weeks of the spiritual year, we wait for Jesus, we try to open ourselves to Him, and we try to follow the track He made in this world. This is the meaning of Christmas, and this is the meaning of being a Christian.
