The aim of the 1989 Lucemian Committee is to create a magazine that not only represents as many aspects of Morongo life as possible but which involves and includes as many people as possible - whether this be in literature, art House or photos.

It is perhaps a sad fact that not everyone will secure a place in this annual review, and indeed that others will appear more than once.... It is also perhaps sad that it is more often than not those who "stand out in the crowd" who are noticed. Tentatively I suggest to those who "missed out" to "stand out" - become more involved in the school. Too many people insist that "you'll peg out if you attempt too much." This is not a phenomenon readily observed. Do everything and enjoy it! (Having glanced through 'thousands' of magazines from other schools, it is easy to see that Morongo has an abundance to offer).... The more things challenged, the more things achieved and the more you'll stand out as an "achiever".

So saying, this year's Lucernian has been the result of a supreme and combined effort of a select group of students from Years 7 to 12, Mrs Morrison, and 'others' - all of whom have not been reluctant to sacrifice time and effort, and indeed who were never at a loss for refreshing ideas and enthusiasm. But thanks must also go to everyone who contributed to the magazine in other ways (photos, literature, reports, etc); and I will say that the response in such areas this year has been fantastic.

This being the last Lucernian for many, I hope it "captures time" sufficiently so that when everybody is utterly exhausted after their fifty (sixty, seventy, eighty?) year stint of "challenging" and "achieving", and they shakily reach (with one frail, blotchy old hand) for a perhaps ordinary and tired-looking book, that only a quick flick and muse through it will inspire just a minor . flood of memories of people, experiences and achievements during a year (if not more) at Morongo!

Principal's Page This year has been a time of remarkable growth and activity in our schooi community - for girls. staff, parents and Old Collegians.

The girls, who are the focus of all that is planned and carried through at Morongo, have responded imaginatively and capably to the many challenges offered, not only in the classroom but also in music, drama, debating, sport and other co-curricular activities.

The very high pass rate of the class of '88 in the V.C.E. external examination and the quality of their results has been an inspiration, particularly to girls at senior levels, who have worked steadily throughout the year to maintain this excellent standard.

Spurred on by the success of the First Rowing Crew in winning the Head of the Schoolgirls for 1988-89, sports teams have trained with determination and enthusiasm, lifting overall performance standards significantly.

Choirs and instrumental groups, in both Junior and Senior Schools, have continued to delight their parents and friends with the high quality of their performances. The Faure Requiem, performed at Wesley Uniting Church earlier this year, was an outstanding example of their very fine work.

Debating is yet another success story for our girls. This activity has been fostered in class ancl in Houses, and the various school teams have been selected from senior students who have progressed to the level required for open competition. Development in debating and public speaking activities has been phenomenal and highly successful.

House spirit remains high, with traditions nurtured by the captains and their House committees. The enthusiasm. originality

and talent brought to the fore in the recent House Music and Drama Competitions was quite stunning.

The quality of what a school offers to its students depends on the staff, and I should like to congratulate and thank all members of staff for the outstanding contributions they have made to the school this year. Many have been heavily involved in preparations for the introduction of the new V.C.E. studies and Frameworks curricula and I am confidently able to say that Morongo Girls' College is indeed well prepared to introduce the new programmes.

The staff has provided excellent leadership in so many ways for the girls and shown their high standards in teaching, thoughtful care and guidance, and readiness to offer assistance to them at all times.

The support of our parent groups has been invaluable. The Junior and Senior Auxiliaries, the Chimside Club and the Parents and Friends Association have all been very enthusiastic in their efforts to continually improve the facilities available in the school for the girls and staff.

The establishment of the Morongo Foundation has led to a growth in interest and support for the school from all sections of the MOrongo family. It has given me very great pleasure to meet with many parents, past and present. and Old Collegians at the functions held during second term, and to know that they have given their support wholeheartedly for the future development of Morongo.

1989 has been a very important year for our school, a year of involvement and achievement for everyone in the Morongo family. I thank you all most sincerely.

Morongo Student Council

School Council 1989 Three very important events have occurred during 1989, each bringing benefits and security for the School. Following the Council's decision last year to establish a Foundation for Morongo, a Foundation Establishment Committee was formed under the capable Chairmanship of Mr David Alexander, and after ten months of extremely hard work and organisation, the Inaugural General Meeting of the Morongo Foundation Limited was held on 30 October, with a very encouraging opening fund of over $800,000. The Foundation consists of two Trust Funds - the Morongo Building Fund and the Morongo Education Fund.

These funds will be of great assistance to the School Council in providing resources for development. The Foundation is ongoing and with continuing support, will be one of our greatest assets.

During the year the Council finalised negotiations with the Uniting Church to the satisfaction of the Synod of the Church and the School Council. Morongo is now a School of the Uniting Church, but retains the independence and autonomy it has previously enjoyed.

Morongo has, since it was founded, been an unincorporated school, but on 1 July 1989 for administrative and legal advantage, it was incorporated, and is now legally known as Morongo Girls' College Ltd. The Morongo Student Council or the MSC by which it is now more commonly known, was established in the school in 1988 and has continued into 1989. The main aim of the council is to improve and integrate student life at Morongo through new channels of communication.

Members are elected for a semester and so far a variety of girls from all year levels have been representatives. This aspect of the council has enabled different students to contribute to the school and enable many girls to undertake leadership roles.

Every two weeks the members of the MSC meet and discuss the issues that have arisen. The meetings are chaired by Peta Trinder whilst Sophie Plumridge frantically takes the minutes!

This year many issues have been raised and overcome. These include having a teacher representative, and thanks must go to Mrs Smith for volunteering and contributing so enthusiastically.

A debutante ball proposal has been taken up by the Parents' and Friends' Association and very importantly, ideas which have related to Social Service concerning where the money raised should go have been considered. Matters such as the canteen, retreats and library books have also been discussed at length.

Overall, it seems as though the M.S.C. is functioning quite well, but it can only be as good as the students make it. This is the essential factor that allows the M.S.C. to continue and without the response from students it would not live up to its name as being a council for all girls of Morongo.

So with the enthusiasm that has been shown this year there is no doubt that it will continue into the future.

School Captain's Report

Fortunately, both of these major events on the Year 12 calendar are survived and after the gossip of the Mid-Year Dance and the realities of study are over, girls begin to accept their role as leaders of the school, gaining in confidence and acquiring a certain air of maturity. Ultimately they feel at home in the Common Room. Now they are actually Year 12's, experiencing and being viewed in the same light as all the girls who have come before them. An assurance eminates from the Common Room along with the excessive heat and sound.

The weeks fly by. The work load increases. The threat of "real" study looms and anxiety creeps into the otherwise jovial atmosphere of the Common Room. The fear of the future, dreams and ideals are expressed with a note of joy, yet an underlying tone of apprehension. The secure haven of Morongo is comfortable and assuring and although they are keen to venture out and experience beyond the confines of school, there is an overwhelming uncertainty and sadness in parting.

The changing atmosphere of the Common Room will remain embedded in my memory forever. The girlish apprehension of the initial weeks contrasts with the developing confidence and maturity of the later months. As I leave the Common Room for the last time I take with me my memories, all my feelings of joy from the fun times had with friends, my fears of the uncertain future which is now before me, but also the confidence to cope with and tackle all the challenges that will come my way, long after I have left the security of Morongo. Every girls leaving Morongo, does so, well equipped with many skills, a sense of self worth and her memories of both good and bad times. She also takes with her a part of the school flame, which will burn brightly within her forever.

Peta Trinder

Girlish giggles are scattered throughout the warm, stifling air of the Common Room. They are joined by constant chatter of the excitement filled summer holidays and the intense heat of the sun penetrates through the gleaming glass. Sprawled throughout the room, they somehow feel displaced, unsure of their new role as Year 12's and alone because of the absence of any seniors. The radio blares out its colourful tunes and the girls valiantly attempt to adopt the roles of conscientious, hard working and studious Year 12's as seniors of the school. They are now school leaders, but the picture does not seem quite right. They are not ready.

The trial period has begun. Prefects bravely attempt to fulfill their duties according to the unwritten rules set by previous years, whilst attempting to juggle the ever increasing hassles of study. The dull grey of autumn sets in and for the girls it seems as though the tasks set before them are impossible to complete and the end of the year a part of the distant future. Furthermore, they do not feel like seniors of the school, but rather year elevens thrust into the positions of Year 12's.

The realities of Year 12 become evident however, as the threat of Mid-Year exams loom. In an effort to conceal the anxiety and anticipation of the first real test of their studies, chatter about the fast approaching and notorious Mid-Year Dance fills the Common Room. The heater thrusts out its warmth and there is talk of elaborate ball dresses and interesting details about partners.

However, the Boarders Dance was one of the highlights of our year in the Boarding House. While Morongo girls danced to music provided by the renowned? Colac Band 'The Cenobytes', a It's often said that, 'you don't really know a person until you rather despondent group of boys tended to sit back and watch, live with them'. This couldn't be more true of a boarding house lacking the enthusiasm we all had. Yet, despite this, The event situation. Boarders are by nature social creatures, and so it didn't take long for the fifty new and uninitiated boarders to be accepted Finally, I would like to say that the opportunities available to this year. The annual 'Boarders Picnic' to Lorne, was a great suc- boarders need to be fully taken advantage of as boarding is what cess, with only a couple of girls not quite surviving that bus trip you make of it. The experiences and friendships gained from around the 'Great Ocean Road'! This gave girls the opportunity to being part of this elite club will he treasured later in life. It wasn't long before all these new faces settled into the spirit will continue to thrive only as long as everyone makes the true lifestyle of a boarder, centred around eating, sleeping and effort and wants it to.

Weekends have been filled with numerous activities from popcorn and pizza video nights and theatre visits, to many outings particularly the Year 7,8, & 9's, who visited the zoo, markets and have been on shopping expeditions. The 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' was a great success with everyone returning safely (much to the disappointment of some girls who seemed to put quite an effort into trying to disappear.)

As usual boarders have been heavily involved in musical, dramatic and sporting activities, showing the rest of the school where the real talent lies. David was a convincing winner in the Boarders Tennis Tournament and Neilson won the House-house baseball, while our true sporting expertise was clearly shown when we beat the 'Daybugs' in the Athletics relay.

Sports Captain — Alzna Mztton

Netball Every Saturday from April to September, twelve Morongo netball teams competed in the Geelong Netball Association Saturday competition against other netball clubs. After a long session in which the 'Mighty Morongo' teams not only looked the part, beautifully decked out in perfect uniform but also acted, or rather played magnificently. All teams deserve congratulating for continually attending practices and games and putting all' their effort and energy into the game. Two teams won their way to the finals, 5th (Light Blue), who were narrowly defeated by Red Jays and 1st (White) who defeated Geelong College 2. Both games were full of suspense and excitement. In the semi-finals four teams were knocked out by only one goal which is rather devastating.

Morongo certainly made themselves known on the Barwon River and in fact other rivers in Victoria and even Western Australia. Not only were the Morongo rowers the most stunning in their new lycra rowing suits but through their success gained recognition for Morongo as being a highly competitive school.

Four crews were reunited during the last week of the summer holidays and took part in the Annual Morongo Rowing Camp.

The firsts trained throughout summer and their dedication and commitment to rowing was well rewarded as they claimed victory over Melbourne Girls Grammar, Wesley College, and MLC in the women's First Four Final at the annual Head of Schoolgirls' Rowing Regatta held Sunday, 12 March on the Barwon River. Four other Morongo crews participated in the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta. 2nd IV - Third in Women' Second IV heat, 3rd IV - Third in Women's Third IV heat, 4th IV - Third in Women's Year 10 final, 5th IV - Third in Women's Fourth IV heat.

The 1st 2nd, 3rd and 4th crews rowed in regattas at' Ballarat, Melbourne and the new course at Carrum with mixed success.

The 1 st's in pursuit of tougher competition, after qualifying to compete in the Australian Rowing Championships, travelled to Wellington Dam in Perth, Western Australia where they rowed their way to the finals, but due to harsh winds, (a cyclone), the course was declared unrowable and races were then cancelled.

Summing up this was the most successful year Morongo has had since its early beginnings a few years ago.

Cross Country This year for something different, the cows in the front paddock were avoided. The cross-country was held along the picturesque Barwon River pedestrian track. It was a bit of a shock to find that we had to run approximately 6 kms as opposed to approximately 3 kms we've run in the past but never-the-less we are a tough bunch at Morongo and within a few minutes, the cross-country was over (that is a bit of an exaggeration!) Congratulations to all those who dared to run and to everyone else, you should be ashamed of your wimpish display! Special mention to Mrs McLean who ran the course and to the other staff members who walked.

Overall Robb house seemed to have the most stamina as they won, followed by Ardens, Roslyn, Lawson, Venters and Harris. \V°4,441.4,

House Athletics Last event on the sports agenda for this term (3) was the Interhouse athletics, held at Goldsworthy Road Athletics Track, on Wednesday, 20 September, in perfect conditions - SUN for about the first time in three years. The day was most successful especially for Venters who were the overall winners followed by Robb, Roslyn, Harris, Ardens and Lawson.

Sarah McCracken not only looked the most gorgeous on the day but also managed to obtain over 17 equal championship.

Swimming

As six loud and enthusiastic Morongo houses filled the Norlane Swimming Centre on Wednesday, 15 February, nervously but capably led by their house captains, there was a sense of excitement, indicating that this year was going to be fast moving and full of surprises.

While most people were willing to don the togs and plunge into the depths of the water, frantically kicking and splashing down the length of the pool, in an attempt to claim victory over their opposition, others were not so brave and found relative security in spectating this event - the Inter-House Swimming Competition.

Roslyn house, proved to be the fastest swimmers on the day, closely followed by Lawson, Venters, Robb, Harris and Ardens.

SWIMMING TEAM Katrina Appleton captained the swimming squad, who under the guidance and expert coaching of Mr Hutley, trained three mornings a week, at some unearthly hour. The training was however worthwhile as during competition many swimmers beat their personal fastest times. At the &iris' invitation Inter-School swimming held at Geelong Grammar on Wednesday, 15 March, Morongo came second to Geelong Grammar and were victorious over Geelong College, which was fantastic. Results at the GPSVSA Combined Swimming Sports held at Olympic Pool, Melbourne, were not so good, but everyone maintained high spirits and endured the tough Melbourne competition. Morongo came 5th behind PLC, Toorak, MLC and MCEGGS.

Sports Dinner This year for the first time we had a combined Sports Dinner for all participants in sport at Morongo from Years 7 to 12. After discovering that our guest speaker, Mr Gary Honey was ill and unable to attend, Mr Brian Lowden, inventor of the Ozzi Cozzi was invited. Thus making a potentially crushed night most enjoyable as Mr Lowden was interesting, informative and entertaining.

Hockey Four hockey teams trained each week, a junior team and three intermediate and senior combined teams. This year the hockey teams weren't entered into a regular competition, but games were organised against other schools - Geelong College, Geelong Grammar, Assumption College, Westboume Grammar and St. Martins, Ballarat, Teams had lots of wins. Hockey players are looking forward to next year's season where they will be entered into a local competition and be able to measure their progress.

The staff must be congratulated for managing to form a full netball team to challenge the students. But because, as preyiously stated, the students being so much better than the staff, the staff had to succumb to yet again another defeat. Mrs Thomas, although illegally playing in her jewels - (non-regulation for netball) and long nails, deserves rewarding for her defence - as brutal as she may have been!

On behalf of Miss Carr, I'd like to thank her brother Richard for playing in the staff team at the senior school hockey. Richard not only showed up our slight lack of skill but also enabled the staff to win 6-1!!

Tennis The Senior School tennis was a glorious affair in which the students totally annihilated the staff, even though they recruited Mr Stewart! Miss Can definitely has potential for being a Wimbledon player and as for Mrs Forbes she is still consistently accurate yet even she was defeated by the students, proving that the students really do possess far superior sporting skills compared to the staff.

At the Senior School baseball match held during first term, a mixed array of talent was displayed. Mr Hutley and his precise pitching was not a display of natural ability, but rather the result of many hours practice during his spares. Obviously this practice was worthwhile since,with great humiliation the students had to admit defeat 4-3. We are most thankful to Mrs Thompson for her unbiased(?) umpiring.

This year we welcomed two new PE staff - Miss Can, head of Department and Mr Hutley, who have already contributed heaps to sport at Morongo - coaching and selection of teams as well as organisation of social matches for teams. The help and support from Miss Can has made my position really enjoyable, allowing me freedom to relate to the sports people of the school rather than be totally absorbed in the administration. Also the Sports Committee is to be thanked for their support. Mrs WAt has given continual support to Morongo sport both spectating and behind-the-scenes, thank you. Final thanks to the kitchen staff for their often seemingly endless supply of sandwiches for the round-robins and to the grounds staff for maintenance of the fields.

In conclusion, I'd like to encourage anyone who is not currently involved in sport to be so next year, as the benefits to be gained are numerous. To everyone who has been involved in sport this year congratulations, for having survived another hectic but enjoyable, rewarding, pleasant etc. etc. etc. year. Ultimately it is the students who are the sport - you've all been great this year!!!

* Music Report 1989 * With a clatter of bows and a series of dents in the flooi, the Morongo 'cellists attended a master class with English 'cellist Penelope Lynex. After an introductory concert certain students were selected to play for her, finding her comments both beneficial and thought provoking. Just as thought-provoking, and, it must be confessed, rather tear-jerking, was the singing of several brave senior girls to the accompaniment of sweet strumming at the Anzad Day service, which contributed to the melancholy, memorable feeling of the service.

The Morongo Church Service, held at St. David's was once again filled to overflowing, and the senior, middle and junior school choirs lived up to their high reputations. A vocal solo from Rachel Wells and an oboe solo from Uby Woods showed yet again the high individual standards reached at Morongo, as presented against the cohesive background of the choirs.

To tempt and delight, one Thursday assembly was given over to a concert, at which the Flute Ensemble and Orchestra performed, playing such old favourites as the Pink Panther, and a selection from Handel's Water Music. Anne Kidman stunned us all with her beautiful performance of the slow movement of the Schumann Piano Concerto, accompanied, naturally by the trusty old school orchestra.

Music Captain - Pippy Gardner

Life at Morongo began as usual, with MUSIC. And with what better way could a year begin than with the shaky, yet proud, strains of "Sint Lucernae Ardentes" that sounded from the hall, accompanied by the usual embarrassed smiles and bewildered fumbles of the uninitiated?

The 4 June. A day no member of the Senior Choir will ever forget - the day of the Faure Requiem. Months of extra rehearsals and preparation went into the performance held at Wesley Church from lectures in breathing right down to the black skirts and white tops which were required. Professional soloists were engaged and the performance enhanced by the Morongo Orchestra and a solo by Anne Kidman. Rapturous acclaim greeted the performance as yet again these talented choristers proved their place as Geelong's foremost school choir.

Early in second semester I was invited to the junior school concert, and was thrilled to hear the host of cellists, violinists, pianists, flutists, guitarists, and of course singers that are coming up in the school. It was a lovely concert and I felt very proud to announce some of the items.

Soon these wonderful voices were lining up impatiently outside the Music Room in order to audition for the prestigous Senior Choir and select Madrigal group, which both took on healthy proportions as so much keen talent emerged. The orchestra began to rehearse under the direction of Mrs Galloway, with the addition of woodwind instruments and occasionally brass to our strong string foundation. The Flute group and band were formed, and as well with a couple of weeks the Music Committee had also been selected and began to function, making the job of Music Captain a little less daunting.

The first half of the third term was a mad rush interspersed with moments of complete break-down of senior girls, to get the Music and Drama competitions underway. A precarious balance between schoolwork and rehearsals was almost reached, but abandoned as the big day drew nearer and tension mounted.

Robb were victorious in their oh-so-elegant Army caps and tracksuits, closely followed by Harris, Roslyn, Lawson, Venters and Ardens. No-one will ever forget the evil glits in Lawson's eyes as they chanted "gossip" to a guilty audience, and the pale blue damsel in distress was indeed a sight to behold. It was a fantastic day, worth every minute of panic and effort.

Without any warning whatsoever, Easter sprang into our path and with characteristic determination, skill and finesse the Madrigal group performed at the Easter service, stalwart and courageous in the face of stage fright and nerves. Then, with a Victorian swoon, we were left to recover from our first, hugely successful performance, over the holidays.

Meanwhile, up in the music room, our intrepid soloists were performing at pre-dinner drinks for the Foundation Dinners, a practice that prepared us to perform with perfect equilibrium for the Amadeus society, which was, dare I say, a "growing" experience for VCE music A students who were to regard it as a trial run for their exam. Ugghhh.

Madrigal Choir The choir and orchestra have begun their respective rehearsals„ after a break during the music competitions, to prepare for speech night. At this point I feel it is appropriate to thank the Director of Music, Mr. Hancock for his expertise and effort.

Without him the choirs would surely disintegrate. I would also like to thank Mrs Galloway and the music staff for their patience and support to all of us temperamental musos!

Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported music at Morongo this year, particularly in assembly where the school song is positively loud, compared with occasions earlier in the year! My job this year has been made fun and happy by your support. Practise hard!!!

* * Drama Report w * On reflection 1989 has been another great year for drama at Morongo. As usual we have been privileged to see some stunning professional performances at school throughout the year.

May I pass on a bouquet to our students. Inevitably the artists say, "These girl are in the most responsive and enthusiastic audience we play for."

Year 9 girls experienced some excellent theatre during the Adelaide Youth Festival, and during their day-long excursion to the Melbourne Theatre Company, as part of the "Cultural Experience" and senior English staff have often taken students to Melbourne to the theatre to study plays.

Our big effort for the year was 3 one act plays from the Noel Cowards series "Tonight at 8.30". At the risk of sounding immodest I believe these three wildly entertaining and amusing pieces were a great credit to all involved.

We were lucky indeed to have Ken Hemmens, Jonathon Roland, Shaun Kinna, David Beynan and our own Michael Hutley to tread our boards. Gulru Noyan was sophisticated and so polished, as the social Lady Gilpin, Ann Shoebridge looked and sounded very 1930, Uby Woods was always completely in character, and Jenny Stone must be the prettiest maid in the world.

Chloe Plumridge was astonishingly rough and vulgar as Lady Pepper, the vaudeville performer, and she handled that very difficult role with consummate skill, never stepping out of character for a moment.

Lucy Mayall looked elegant and grand and Jasmin Skewes was very convincing in the role of the scatty stage hand (not type casting Jasmin).

Natalie Morrison looked and sounded devine and she was very believable and appealing playing opposite the charming Shaun Kinna in that wicked and mad little bedroom farce, "Ways and Means."

Narelle Montgomery, Ann Van Leerdam, Carly Adler and Uby Woods worked very well in smaller roles and it was a great team effort. The sets were very effective and where applicable, carefully and beautifully dressed.

The support staff of parents, friends, teachers and girls do a wonderful job, and although we all wilt a little after many long weary hours of rehearsals, the pride in the end result is really fantastic.

There's no business like show business, and no girls more talented or wonderful to work with than our girls.

* Debating and Public Speaking This year at Morongo we have seen continued interest in both public speaking and debating. Trial debates were set up to determine teams and it was decided that we would have a Year 10/11 combined team to compete in the Apex competition and a Year 12 team to compete in the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) competition.

Our Year 12 DAV team, consisting of Kate Thomas, Uby Woods, Sari Sutton and Ailsa McVean had mixed fortune winning two debates, losing two, and forfeiting the fifth due to a Maths A option test. This competition was very exciting, and the girls who participated deserve admiration for their energy and commitment (except when options get in the way!). Thanks must go to Alina Mitton who provided us with some brilliant chairing, even if we know her real participation was due to the regular stop over at McDonalds on the way home.

Out Apex team, consisting of Chloe Plumridge, Dannielle Entwistle, Trudi Smart, and Vanessa Keleher, started off this competition with solid wins over Grovedale Technical High School and Newcomb High School.

This led to a battle with Geelong College and then a final show down between Morongo and Matthew Flinders for the Hedley trophy. Victory went to Morongo who became district Champions for the first time in this competition. The first zone final brought us face to face with Trinity College, Colac, for an impressive confrontation. After much nail-biting concern, Morongo were declared victorious, leading to an uproarious trip back to Geelong, including a version of the School song that at least two teachers hadn't heard before. This was followed by a celebratory supper at the Pancake Kitchen. The next round was against Daylesford Technical High School.

Morongo managed to win this round, and at the time of writing, the team were preparing for the semi-final against Dimboola Morongo managed to win this round. In the Final, Morongo meets Portland High School!

Inter-house debating continued this year, with the standard reaching stimulating heights. The battle was fought out closely and ferociously with Lawson and Venters doing battle in the final. Venters came out on top, but all debaters are to be congratulated on their great effort. Thanks must go to Mrs Morrison for her hard work in organising house debating and ensuring that it got off the ground with the maximum of efficiency.

Not only were many of the Morongo girls busy at debating but public speaking also presented some challenges. With a variety of competitions being open to our speakers, Morongo was very well represented. Morongo provided a strong field of competitors in the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition: seniors - Sari Sutton, Chloe Plumridge and Uby Woods, and juniors - Laura Hughes, Naomi Rankin, Georgia Kin-Siem and Leah Sumner.

Our next competition was Lions Youth of the Year quest.

Sophie Plumridge represented Morongo at the Torquay club and Uby Woods at Hamlyn Heights. Next on our list was the Apex public speaking competition where once again Uby Woods and Laura Hughes represented us.

Katrina Appleton, Nicola Ashton, and Marnie Carroll took part in the Plain English Speaking Award. Unfortunately, we were not successful here but the experience gained by the students was very beneficial.

In closing this report, I would thank warmly Mrs Deller and Mrs Morrison for their help in organising events, Mrs Watt for her continuing support and the use of the mini buses, the boarding house staff for providing meals (talking is a hungry business).

A big thank you should also go to the girls who participated, for, without them, these activities would not take place and Morongo would not be represented so successfully and honourably. Finally we give a thank you to Mr Hanan for his organisation, extensive research, time, effort, and continual support.

Ardens House Report Take your blocks. Set. Bang! Splash! Such was the energetic start to the first inter-house competition for 1989. Tanned and fresh from the summer holidays, revitalised Ardenites began the year's agenda with the Swimming Sports. Everyone put in a fantastic effort, both the goldfish bobbing up and down in those stunning sunny yellow caps, and the tireless cheer squad yelling heartily to the strains of 'A Little Birdie'. We came 6th, but it was extremely close competition!

The sound of sweaty, squeaky sneakers trudging around the oval in 2nd term was, of course, our dedicated Ardens CrossCountry enthusiasts in training. This year, the Cross-Country was more exciting and more eagerly:awaited than ever, being held on a scenic circuit around the Barwon! Although it was slightly longer than last year's route, it was decidedly more enjoyable (of course cross-countries are always enjoyable), and Ardens' eager, fit and flexible jobbers excelled - we gained an overall 2nd place! A special congratulations must go to our younger runners who gained Ardens 1st place in the junior division. Outstanding individual efforts were made by Karen Kirkpatrick (4th), Kathryn Grundell (7th), Sarah Lamb (9th) and Yvette Zeuschner (10th) in the junior section, and Narelle Montgomery (8th) in the senior section.

House sport has been going well this year, with teams showing their unbeatable style in tennis, table tennis, baseball, netball and hockey (the mud was the best part!).

Our annual Inter-House Athletics Day was greeted with much appreciated September sunshine, and proved to be an outstanding success, being extremely enjoyable for competitor.s and spectators alike. Our cheerers were especially loud and enthusiastic! We gained a commendable 4th place, and admirable individual results were obtained by Kathryn Grundell (U/14 runner-up) and Yoshiko Matsumoto (17/0 runner-up) - well done!

Ardens House Captain - Sari Sutton

In June, our debaters displayed their oratorical talents in the lunch-time inter-house competitions. The eager volunteers were Jenny, Narelle and Katrina, and Lindy, Rowena and myself. We didn't make it to the finals, but participating was fun, thanks to our avid supporters!

Third term opened to the sounds (some of them not so pleasant at first!) of Ardenites exercising their vocal chords and singing and drama practices for the annual Music and Drama Competitions. Our theme this year was 'Summer Holidays', and the day proved to he both exciting and entertaining. We came 6th, but everyone had heaps of fun being involved! Special thanks must go to Susan Robins (our piano player), and Kirsten Bishop (our Arabian conductress), for their tremendous efforts in getting the show on the road.

The year has been a busy one, with the ongoing collection of stamps (thanks to Andrea - our persistent counter!), and with the raising of funds for a new house mascot - a replacement for Arnie (who is much-loved but nearing the age of retirement due to obsolescence). Unfortunately, I will not be here to see his successor's initiation to Ardens!

At the end of an eventful, enjoyable and thoroughly memorable year, I must say goodbye to a fantastic house which has been such a pleasure to lead. Special thanks to the Yr 12s, the House Committee and the house staff for their support and encouragement throughout the year, and best of luck to Julie for next year! Ardens - you are a great house with tremendous enthusiasm - you always try your hardest and keep smiling through both success and defeat! You have made my final year so much more rewarding. 'Seek Wisdom', and use it to keep up that great house spirit!

Harris House Report

The entire house did extremely well keeping to the theme of Voyaging, even though they were led by a conductor who showed her limited knowledge of the craft and looked more as if she was cleaning windows than conducting!

Second placing was a fantastic effort and it was made possible due to the hard work: everybody contributed particularly Peta, Libby, Natalie and Shereen.

Due to Athletic trials and Music practices only a few Senior Sport games of Hockey and Netball were played. On one occasion our Hockey players battled with the very deep mud and their House Captain who was playing for the opposite team to be victorious against a small Robb team. Our Netballers, once again had little success, however, they tried extremely hard to learn the rules of the game!

Athletics was a time for our individual Champions to show their superior skill. Shu-lin Lee (under 12 runner-up), Clare Fallow (under -15 runner-up), Sarah Reid (under 15 champion) and Bronnie Bekker (17/Over champion) must all be congratulated. As too should our Intermediate stars, who won our first trophy for the year, well done guys!!

Stamps have been brought constantly during the year.

Harris House Captain - Jane McCormack

1989 started with a bang, the Swimming Sports!!! We had been back only a couple of days when entry forms were being handed out. With a little, maybe a lot of persuasion nearly everyone tried out for an event. The big day was Wednesday, 15 February when the Harris Dolphins showed everyone the great enthusiasm we. are known for.

Unfortunately our swimming was not quite as successful as our cheering which was capably led by our our year elevens.

In the very close competition we finished fifth overall. However, if points were given for cheering we would have won. Congratulations to Noni Korobka our Junior Champ, who was the under 12 runner-up champion.

Our Seniors then took to the Tennis courts and Baseball fields in senior sport on Wednesday mornings. We finished with mixed success and were placed sixth, overall.

In second term, we saw our Juniors also playing Tennis and Baseball and their results were much better than the very enthusiastic, yet sometimes lacking in talent and skill, Seniors. The Juniors came fifth overall.

Our debaters did extremely well this year, coming third. Thanks and congratulations to our six debaters on their great effort.

Third term was a very busy term. Ahead of us were Music Competitions. Due to the enthusiasm and hard work of the entire house, we managed our best result for the year, second, behind the very impressive Robb Army.

Lawson House Report Well my dreaded first task as House Captain was to organise where we were to hold our 1988 annual House picnic. We eventually decided that we would go to the Barwon Heads Golf Course and play golf and tennis. However it was just my luck, that on the day of the House picnic, God had decided that yes, the plants all needed a water. Unfortunately it was too wet to go so we stayed at school with Venters and spent the day eating, talking and playing games with them. Lawson showed that their muscles were stronger as they beat Venters in many of the tug-ofwar events we had.

* Lawson House Captain - Georgie Fidge 1989 began with a splash, not a bang, as all the tanned Lawsonites returned to school in fine form for the Inter House Swimming Sports. The salt water over summer had done wonders for Lawson as the girls swam swiftly through the water to overall come a very close second. Lawson's cheers echoed the pool arena, while Annabel and Jasmin's enthusiasm became contageous amongst all the girls. There were some fantastic individual performances by Pauline Yan (0/17 champion), Natalie Strijder (U/16 champion) and Prue Waayers (U/13 runner-up). All I can say about the swimming, Lawson, is that it was a fantastic effort and I can't wait to see you with 1st place in 1990!

Second term was fairly quiet, with junior sport being played every Wednesday. All girls in both junior and senior sport throughout the year continued to try which consequently amounted to some fine results for Lawson. The debating too was held in Term two, with Lawson starring. We won all our rounds, which gave us a position in the final. Thanks to our finalist team, Ailsa McVean, Patricia Laird and Ann Shoebridge, who although unable to beat Venters, did extremely well to make the final. Just before we all toddled off to our well deserved break, the fun-filled, energetic cross-country was held. This year we ran around the track down by the Barwon River. It was by far more scenic than at school and besides, we didn't break our ankles, because we weren't running in the turned up paddocks. While the majority of us plodded on with stitches aching in our sides, there were some fantastic individual efforts - these girls have stamina! - Georgia Radcliff-Smith with 4th place in the seniors and Prue Waayers with 3rd place in the juniors. Well done to all Lawson girls who ran. Although we didn't win, our 4th place overall was a great effort. By the time the holidays arrived people were so sore from the cross-country that they didn't toddle home but limped with pained expressions.

Well, third term was a wowzer of a term with both the Inter House Music Competitions and Inter House Athletics. It was a busy term where everyone was involved. In proving how exceptionally good Morongo girls were at rumours, Lawson took on the theme of "Gossip" for the Music Comps. Our "Heard it through the grapevine", I thought,was fabulous especially with Bianca Cranwell starring on the saxophone. Thank you Caroline for your conducting ability. Uby for your musical talent (without you we would have been lost), Diana who played the piano so well and George, "The Big Rad" (courtesy of Sarah Dean), for directing the drama. Our fourth place was great, everyone worked so hard I just hope you all enjoyed yourselves like I did.

With the Aths, Lawson didn't quite star like we did in the swimming, but Tasmin Crocker did particularly well in winning U/12 champion. Nevertheless Lawson's spirit and enthusiasm Was still high even though we came last. It must have been my beautiful, green platform shoes that distracted you all! We may not have won the Aths but I am sure we won on the cheering, once again with Annabel leading us with her very loud screeching voice. We all loved her arm actions as well!

Throughout the year, stamps were brought along to each House Assembly. -Those who forgot gave the house much pleasure in watching them imitate flies dying. Results from the stamps have not yet been finalised, but I am certain Lawson will do very well, especially as Jodie-Ann Arklay brought heaps (too many to count!) Thanks must go to Simone Simpson, Amanda Leigh and Sue Minchinton who organised and counted the stamps throughout the year.

Well I must say that I have had a great year and heaps of fun in leading Lawson this year. I must just thank all the year 12's for their continual support, Mrs Trigg and the other house staff.

Best of luck to Leah next year and of course to the best house, Lawson. Just always try your best and most of all have fun and enjoy yourselves, and keep that fantastic Lawson spirit going!

Robb House Report When I began my role as Robb House Captain, I was under the impression that Robb was the greatest house in the school.

While running the risk of sounding a little bit conceited, I must say, again my disturbingly perceptive skills were, as per usual, right on target. Robb is indeed the greatest house in the history of Morongo. This instinctive reaction has been proven, without doubt, over the course of twelve inspiring months, and I will now present the evidence to support this statement.

Then came the beginning of the year 1989, and with it came the swimming competitions. All Robbites put in all their effort in and out of the pool, and towards th end of the day we were coming second, ready to take first position in a matter of a few races.

Then something dawned on me. My sixth-sense-like perception told me that wewould be so successful in inter-house events to come, that to win this competition too, would be unfair to the other houses. So we discretely dropped back to fourth place and allowed the other houses to take the glory of first, second and third placings.

Robb House Captain - Sarah McCracken

It all began way back in 1988, when I was confronted with my first task as a House Captain, the House Picnic. It was all going very well, buses at the ready, Kentucky Fried Chicken on everyone's minds (and in the back of Mrs Gardner's car), and everyone ready for a day full of fun and exciting activities. When suddenly a dark cloud appeared on the horizon, bringing sense of foreboding which was echoed in the hearts of every other house but Robb. Rain could not dampen our spirits! So while every other house was on the verge of tears and their captains on the verge of nervous break-downs, Robb was having a wonderful time playing with an Earthball, a giant parachute, watching videos, eating Kentucky Fried Chicken and genearlly having a very enjoyable day. Right girls?

Many weeks went by until the last week of second term, when we all ventured down to the Barwon River for a pleasant job, which was wimpishly described by the other houses as a hellish exercise. Our supreme fitness and endurance shone through, as we whipped the opposition. It was easy to tell the girls in Robb, for they were the ones running with their knees up high, with grins on their faces, and singing 'Sint Lucemae Ardentes' like angels to keep themselves company way out in the lead. While at the back slogged the others, perspiration dripping from their faces, tripping over every second step, and wheezing for breath.

Needless to say, Robb won.

Third term was yet another good one for Robb. First of all came the Music Competition, and here is perhaps the greatest proof of Robb being the best house. Although we have only one member in the Senior Choir in the entire house, everyone rose to the occasion and performed with moving artistry in Drama, Small Group and Big Group, bringing many people in the audience close to tears, and elevating the school to majestic heights for twenty heaven-inspired minutes, on the theme "The Army". Once again, Robb proved to be the best, taking first place. Many thanks to Pippy Gardner for our success.

The Athletics Competition took place at the end of third term, and we all watched on as Robbites were only seen by a streak of purple blazing past on the track, a purple person which turned to a speck way up in the stratosphere in highjump, and a purple catapult hurling objects out of the sports arena. But, once again, we wisely decided to give another house the pleasure of coming first, as we gracefully accepted second place.

;33 So, there is the evidence to prove that Robb is the greatest house. It is in my opinion that this group of girls can pull together and perform exceptionally, no matter what is asked of them. Well done to all Robbites on your fantastic, and unfailing efforts throughout the year. You are the greatest house ever.

Roslyn House Report Roslyn is Hot to GO, H.O.T.T.O.G.O. Ah-ooh hot to go, Ah-ooh hot to go.

In magnificent style. Roslyn swept into the first term of 1989 Many of our first house meetings consisted of Roslynites showing their unco-ordination when attempting to clap to the new war cry. However once we mastered the beat, the swimming pool was at our mercy. Roslyn was hot to go. Our speed in the water proved too much for the other houses and we continued the four year tradition of victory. Congratulations to Katrina Appleton, Sheridan Douglas and Kirsty Bolton who received individual championships or runners-up in their age groups.

The weekly house sports soon commenced, involving table tennis, tennis, baseball, then hockey and netball. Due to our very small numbers of Roslynites, some weeks were pushed to filling the teams. But week after week we played in style (apart from the occasional sprained ankle and bleeding knee) and we gained a creditable second place over all.

Then in mid winter we shed our skins and braved the six kilometer cross country course around the Barwon River. Unfortunately Robb ran us off our feet, but we all managed to finish the gruelling marathon in one piece, coming third overall. In previous years, all we had to do was basically run around the school's paddocks, but this year it was very difficult. For the days afterwards I felt like a cripple. The cross country is one thing I will definitely not miss next year!

Now came the time that demanded the house to work together, and produce a thirty minute production. We decided on the theme "Detectives and Crime," for the music competitions. The most dreaded and resented lunch time practices began and we were up to our necks in scripts, finding plays, songs and poems about vague, air-headed detectives. Thank goodness we have talented musicians in our house for I didn't have a clue. With Gulru in charge, my job was easy. (I sat back and listened to the most interesting - well amusing voices of the large group). Michelle Douglas accompanied with the saxophone, Cathy Bullen on the drums, and Alice Eng on the piano. The song "Help" by the Beetles proved to be most enjoyable (or so Melanie Quick and Louise Bone thought on the day). Apart from a few unavoidable mishaps, with the tape recorder, our production proved very professional and congratulations Roslyn to a well earned third place.

Then it was back on to the track for the Athletic competitions.

Apart from a few minor disasters a few days before, the day was very successful. We managed equal first in the junior section, and second in the senior section, with a phenomenal third overall. Congratulations to those girls who received individual championships, and to those who put in so much effort.

The stamp competition proved a never ending bore, however it did provide amusement in some of our meetings. Unfortunately, as much as Cathy Bullen enjoyed dancing with Mr Lyne, we didn't manage to raise quite enough stamps to be victorious.

Keep up the collecting and devious punishments.

I wish all the best to Katrina Appleton and Roslyn for next year.

Katrina, keep all of the Roslynites practising their clapping or they may lose their co-ordination. Thank you to all of the year 11 and 12's and house staff for your continual support. Look after Ralph and the ostriches and keep up the great house spirit.

Venters House Report

At home in my neat, clean (most of the time) room, I have a Venters box. It is a huge wooden trunk full of the great navy memorabilia of the past twenty-two years of Venters. On Grand Final night, my parents and I discovered on our return that our home had been broken into. Rushing desperately about the house to endeavour to find exactly what was stolen, I found the Venters box upturned and emptied of its contents. Luckily only my school bag had been stolen, to carry away the loot and no Venters memories were severly damage (neither was the golden Athletics Cup which we had won). When I was packing all the papers, photos, books, streamers and dressses away, I wondered what the thieves must have thought of this magnificent team.

After all 1989 had proven to be an extremely successful year.

Our first clash or splash was in the Norlane Pool. Just to fool the other houses this year, we broke our traditional last place and came third following the hard swimming, diving and plenty of cheering. Some outstanding individuals were Claire Wookey (u/ 15 champ) and Vicki Hedley (runner-up u/16 champ).

Debating also proved to be victorious for Venters. With the powerful speeches of Vanessa, Chloe and Caroline, Venters toppled Lawson in the debating final to become outright winners.

The dreaded cross country arose all too quickly for some Venterites, as we huffed and puffed around the track near the Barwon River. However, the Junior section was brilliantly won by Nikola McGrath and in 6th place came Kate Laidlaw. Our first senoirs to cross the finishing line were Danni Entwistle (9) and Michelle Barrett (12).

The Venters theme for the Music and Drama Competitions this year was "Happiness". The melodic voices of all girls could be heard singing "What a Wonderful World" and a boppy "Joy to the World" all through the beginning of third term. Our production was well received by the audience who especially enjoyed the floral sight of Blossom (Nicole Brown) in our play. Overall, we came a creditable fifth. Special thanks must go to Kate for her help with all aspects of the competition and to Jayne, Vikki and Fiona who all sang so loudly, although it wasn't always necessarily in tune.

Stamps, stamps, and more stamps. After many internal stamp competitions between the Venters girls, threats and bribes our collection grew. Thanks must go to all the counters, Menique (who unfortunately left) and Dycinta who organised the stamps and helped us out so well. Again this year Steph Field brought weekly her 50 or more stamps and Mrs. Metcalf,who fortunately has ties to the Shire Council Offices, must be congratulated for their continuous support. ._

To end third term on a high, we won the Athletics held at Goldsworthy Rd. Field with superb style. It must have been my continual pleas to run around the block every night after school with the dog. Our Champions were Lou Turner (U/17), Ilsa Kuiper (runner-up), Nikola McGrath (U/15) and Kate Laidlaw (U/13). , CONGRATULATIONS must go to everyone who ran, threw. jumped and cheered so hard to achieve such a fabulous result.

Finally special thanks must be forwarded to the staff and fellow year 12's whom without 1 couldn't have survived. To the whole of Venters house - Keep up the fabulous enthusiasm and good luck for 1990. Best of luck to Dannie. (Next years NciVI, Captain!).

I

Year 9 Cultural Experience 1989 was the first year of the Cultural Experience. The idea behind it was to give year 9's an opportunity to expand their horizons and to provide them with a variety of new, different experiences, that otherwise would not have been encountered.

Each girl was to keep a journal containing reports of activities, and samples of her work.

Each term was given a theme - 1. History, 2. Fine Arts, 3.

Government, 4. Performing Arts.

Excursions were planned around these themes, and our teachers tried to give their subjects a leaning toward the themes also.

Two major excursions - to Adelaide in 2nd term, and Canberra in Term 3 - were highlights of the year. Each lasted 5 days full of activities.

The Adelaide visit coincided with the bi-annual Youth Festival held there, providing many sources for our enjoyment.

Examples of some excursions we had over the year: - Gold of the Pharoahs Exhibition at the Museum, - The Great Australian Art Exhibition, - The Shrine of Remembrance, - The Victorian College of the Arts - open day, - Sovereign Hill, - The Wool Museum here in Geelong, and - A visit to Tay Creggan, the year 9 campus for Strathcona.

We would like to thank Mrs. Gardner and Mrs. McLean, our year level co-ordinators, for organizing, helping, listening, and coping with us. Without you, and the rest of the Morongo Staff, 50 year 9 girls would have missed a wonderful experience.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS On Sunday 4th June, three teams from Morongo went to Monash University in Melbourne to compete in the yearly event of the Tournament of Minds.

Each team was given a long term problem to solve over a period of six weeks. On the day, we were also given a spontaneous problem which consisted of thinking of as many ways as possible to use a plastic spoke. The two Junior teams were made up of girls from Years 5 and 6. When the results were announced we were so pleased to hear that one Morongo team had been placed second in their section. All teams thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you to Mrs Lea-Wood and all parents who gave of their time to help us.

THE MARINE SCIENCE CENTRE BABY STEVEN AND HIS ADVENTURE One day Mrs. Rex was about to have a baby. Suddenly she felt something close to her. There was Steven,her baby boy, squealing at her. Mrs. Rex went off to find something to eat. She found Coryosauruses and she went over and grabbed two. While that was happening, Steven walked off. He found himself in a herd of Trichatops, they were coming closer and closer !!!!!! Steven ran away as fast as he could. Then he found himself near a little water hole.

On Tuesday the 27th of February, Years 2 and 3 went to the Marine Science Centre. When we arrived, Tim showed us some sharks' teeth. They were very sharp. Then Tim tricked us into calling a crab seaweed. He brought out a rock, and he said for us to come closer, then the rock which was a sea squirt, squirted us with water. We ate some seaweed, it had a nothingness taste. Tim said that seaweed was used in icecream, toothpaste and baked cakes. Next we went to the centre and when we arrived there, we had a feel of all the things in the touch tank. We had to lift a whale's spine, it was very heavy. We had a lovely day at the Marine Science Centre in Queenscliff.

They both started walking off into the wild, but where Tichy had last seen Steven's mother and father there was no sign of them. There was a herd of Ankylosauruses. They must have been in the wrong place. But Tichy was sure he saw them there. They went to look in other places for them. Soon they came to the two big Stuthionimuses. They started chasing them. Mrs. Rex came running in and saw Steven.

MY GRANDPA The person I know with a handicap is my grandpa. He has an artificial leg as he had his leg amputated just below his knee two years ago. Grandpa had to learn to walk again, drive a car but now he doesn't even use a stick to walk with.

If I had this handicap I would feel sad and left out as I wouldn't be able to run, skip, jump as I do now. The hardest thing for me to cope with would be, not being able to do all the things I do now, without thinking about.

Joey switched off his light and rolled under his bed covers. He heard all the bedroom doors close. The house settled down to sleep. Suddenly his scalp prickled as he heard a scratching noise in his bedroom. He quickly switched on his light again. Then he sighed with relief as he saw it was only Tiger, his kitten, scraping on the door.

He climbed out of bed, opened the door, walked into the hallway and took Tiger outside. Then he froze, because he had seen a ghost. Suddenly he turned around because someone had put their hands on his shoulders. It was a man. The man said, "you are coming with me."

He dragged Joey to a black van, shoved him inside and drove off with him. Soon they arrived at a huge house. The van stopped and the man hopped out. He pulled Joey out of the van and pushed him towards the front door. He opened the door and threw him inside. joey wondered whether he was dreaming or not, so he shook his head and rubbed his eyes but he wasn't dreaming. The man dragged him along a hallway and shoved him into a room.

SUNBEAMS Every Thursday night I go to Sunbeams. I have got my second class badge, my homemaker badge, my first aid badge, my swimmer's badge and my athletics badge. At Sunbeams we play games and work towards badges. The uniform is a grey dress with a cap and a sash.

There are twenty.four badges you can get. The first two badges we have to do is the Homemaker and Thrift badge. The leader's names are Sunlea, Mrs. Mawson, Mrs. Henderson and Aylea. I like Sunbeams because it is a lot of fun and I have made some nice friends.

The shelter is closed by the snow and I can feel my legs being covered by snow as I slowly fall to the ground. My body is going numb and then I black out!!!

• * KANGAROO ISLAND Chapter One . The Ferry Kangaroo Island is on the other side of Cape Jervis. I stayed at the Pennyshaw Caravan Park. I saw penguins at the beach, in holes and hiding in rocks. There were heaps of rocks.

: E STRANGE CREATURE UP IN MARS 4

It was a long way to Emu Bay. We took dad's boat with us but the men didn't take us out because they were going diving. We had lunch at Emu Bay. We went back to the caravan park before the men got back. Then when the men did get back we cooked the fish that they caught. Georgina, Rani and I played with Brendon and Wayne. Brendon and Wayne were three men. We were good friends.

Chapter Three . Seal Bay It was a long, long journey to Seal Bay and one of the baby seals came right up to me. I ran to dad straight away. The seal said, "Ororor". Then all of us went to look and see the whale bones on the other side of the beach. We couldn't get to the other side of the beach because it was blocked off. There were some more seals.

In this book it says that there's a strange creature that lives up in Mars. It has four eyes and two earrings, four legs and green and black hands as well as one nose. It always comes down from Mars to eat people and it dresses up as a lady and walks down the street.

Sometimes it climbs up a tree and when someone is going for a walk it will jump down on them. All of a sudden the door opened and the space creature with four eyes and two earrings, all green Sophie Klopper Year 1 and black, appeared. GULP!

CAT OF THE MONTH My family's pet is called Jassie. She is a really great cat. Jassie is a domestic cat. I'll tell you why I think Jassie should be 'Pet of the Month'. She has dark marmalade fur with white under her tummy, on her face and paws. One time Jassie was in a funny mood and when she is in a funny mood she is very playful.

Daddy waved his five dollar note when he was on one side of the door and jassie on the other. Jassie stuck her paw through the crack under the door and ripped Dad's five dollar note. Another time Mum waved her feather duster at Jassie and jassie chased it with her paw. It was funny to watch. When she hops on my bed sometimes I stick my foot under her body and when I bring it out again Jassie bites my toes. Sometimes Kate and I wave a bootlace at Jassie and she catches it with her paws and puts it in her mouth. She is a lovely cat.

CAPTAIN TOWN Once upon a ship wreck, like everybody says.

There was an old pilot, called Captain Biezz.

He sailed from one side to get back to land.

He loves being pilot, but his shoes get filled with sand.

He hates all the fish, but they're really not bad.

He made up a word, it's funny, it's 'chad'.

It means when all the pilots come back to their ships, they eat up their dinner, they eat fish and chips.

China Tour - January 1989 We received a rather rude shock upon our arrival in Beijing airport at 2.00 a.m. when greeted by temperatures in the proximity of -50°F! Our tour group of 27, including parents, families, members of staff, friends and students, past and present, had to adjust quickly to the icy climate, having just departed our sunny Australian summer. We quickly discovered that thick, woolly hats, scarves and thermal underwear were essential components of our outfits if we were to combat the cold.

Our first tastes of authentic Chinese food were greeted with mixed reactions - foreign-looking green slices of egg and steamed seaweed are not particularly tempting while one is still recovering from jet lag!

Although grey and bleak, we found Beijin to be a fascinating city, with bicycles, bicycles and more bicycles! We visited the Forbidden City Tian An Men Square, and climbed The Great Wall - a truly breathtaking experience.

At Xian, we experienced the first snow fall of our visit to China, and visited the World-famous Qin Mausoleum of Terracotta Warriors.

Our three day 'cruise' on the Yangtze River proved to be perhaps the most infamously memorable of our experiences in China! Conditions were poor, and the food was, to put it nicely, rather unpalatable - most of us survived on rations of Cadburys'.

In the biting cold, the oldies miserably huddled together, wrapped in blankets, and played cards.

At Wuhan, we visited a univeristy, where we met with friendly Chinese students eager to practise their English on us; our next stop was fascinating, Westernised Shanghai.

The eagerly-awaited finale to our tour was the four day stopover in Hong Kong, where the avid shoppers amongst us had an absolute ball (and returned home with considerably emptier pockets!)

Overall, we enjoyed our tour immensely. China being so culturally different to Australia, provided us with wonderful learning opportunities. Special thanks must go to Mrs Trigg, our brave, tireless tour leader, for her friendly assistance and successful organisation of an extremely memorable trip.

Young Achievement Australia Eleven Year 11 's have been involved in a Young Achievement organization - Mono Y.A. Each Thursday afternoon we have travelled to the Shell Refinery which is where we operate the company. The Young Achievers are Fiona Chivell, Dione Mauric, Cathy Bennett, Kristie Eales, Fiona Wilson, Sally Bate, Patricia Laird, Vanessa Ho, Simone Middleton, Vicky McCarthy and Melanie Veal.

Young Achievement Organizations aim to give students in Year 11 the opportunity to experience the problems and joys of running a small business. Shell Refining Australia was our sponsor. Shell provided us with Advisors to assist the Directors and the company as a whole, and also a place to manufacture our product.

We began in March. The first things we had to do were choose a name for the company, decide upon a product and elect Directors. The name Mono Y.A. was chosen because Morongo and Norlane High students were involved in the project. Our product was chosen by an elimination process. We brainstormed different possible products then dismissed the ones that were too easy to manufacture, too difficult, too cheap to sell and too expensive to produce. Finally we arrived at noticeboards that were whiteboard and 3i cork. We also chose plaques as cashflow products. Then six Directors had to be elected: During the year we have attended several functions. A skills seminar at The University of Melbourne which was extremely useful, not only for running our company, but for when we enter the workforce and even for school organization. We have had Trade Fairs at Flinders Street Station and Corio Village. These Trade Fairs involve many different companies who get together to sell their various products. Judges give points to each venture for product quality, attendance, presentation and sales. The points go toward the Budget Venture of the Year Award, for the best company. Speakers have attended some of our meetings to talk about sales techniques, problem solving and setting goals.

This I found very useful for everyday, not just for the venture.

All the Young Achievers have the opportunity to enter the Young Achiever of the Year Award. For this they must have a good sales record, write an essay and sit an examination on business skills. Vicky has entered this and she is one of eighteen in Victoria. Two are chosen from Victoria and they go to Canberra for the National Competition. The winner of the Australian title receives an all expenses paid trip to America to represent Australia at the annual conference of the Young Achievers, and of course tour America while they are there. They also receive $5,000 from Young Achievement Australia.

To be a part of a successful company it takes a lot of organization, discipline, effort and worry, but I think it has ben worth every minute (especially with a profit margin like ours). The share holders received approximately $1.50 for every share they invested.

I would like to encourage anyone who is willing to work and attend every session to become involved with a Young Achievement project in the future.

PEER SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Tournament of Minds

The Peer Support Programme is where five or six Year 7 girls meet with two Year 11 girls once a week to become involved in activities and discussion. This interaction offers the younger girls a group of peers who will provide friendship and support, and the older girls an invaluable experience in leadership and caring.

On Sunday, 4 June, at around 7.30 a.m., a group of eager Morongo girls set forth for Monash Univeristy. The seven girls had been busy for weeks, meeting twice a week early in the morning as well as at weekends. Megan Ford (Year 7), Nerissa Kemp (Year 7), Noni Korobka (Year 7), Kathryn Traczyk (Year 8), Janine Facer (Year 8), Tanya Hall (Year 9) and Emma Jackman (Year 9), as well as the emergency, Anne Kidman (Year 8), were the Morongo team entering in the Tournament of Minds under the guidance of Mrs Lea-Wood, who encouraged us all and kept our enthusiasm high.

As part of our individual support programme, nine Year 11 girls visit the Junior School once a week during lesson time to work with individual girls in levels ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 4. For the senior girls this is part of their Year 11 English course, but given time,we hope these relationships will develop new understandings and friendships.

Science Talent Search ******** Morongo girls were very successful in the Science Talent Search conducted by the Geelong branch of the Victorian Science Teachers Association. Our girls entered in a number of sections and the following girls were awarded bursaries: Year 2: Year 3: Year 4:

The Tournament of Minds is a time-consuming tournament which consists of a long-term problem and a short-term problem. In our case, the short-term problem was in the form of a plastic object which looked like a fishing reel with different shapes around the rim and with which we had to use our imagination to state different things it could be used for. The tournament directors gave us a choice for our long-term problem. We chose to rewrite "The Play" by C.J. Dennis in the slang of Melbourne today. Once that was rewritten, we were required to act 'The Play' while the ghost of C.J. Dennis looked on. Six weeks was all that was allowed for the long-term problem, and many weekends were spent painting backdrops and properties and organising costumes as well as memorize 'The Play'.

It was well worth it though, as the team worked together and gained sixth place out of the fifty teams entered. Thanks must go to Mrs. Lea-Wood and the parents for their support and the time they spent to enable us to achieve what we did. Thanks also to Mrs. Deller for her help with acting and improving 'The Play'.

A handful of forgotten treasure spills down from the top of the cupboard, mixed with the alluring dust that always accompanies such finds, musty, and tainted with memories. I clamber down from the ill-treated chair recruited for my escapade and kneel on the carpet, lingering dust alighting on my hair, in my nose. Long forgotten relatives meet my inquisitive fingers, and my eyes gaze wistfully at the fashions and manners of the past era. A smile plays with my lips as I read a faded, intricate inscription, "Ascot 1928". My mind wanders drearily...

Elegant ebony binoculars are held before perfect, sculptured faces as a race is called. Women, draped on admiring arms, are seemingly oblivious of their men, instead flaunting and parading their beauty, a glass of effervescent champagne the finishing touch between their fingers. Severe dark bobs framing pale, painted features they eye one another, wary behind their porcelain masks, careful to maintain their poise.

Men place bets and talk seriously, knowledgeably. In groups they leisurely smoke and surreptitiously check that wives, girlfriends, mistresses are still on the fine intangible lead they allow them. Comfortable in refined, quality suits they lord the stadium, unacknowledged masters of the turf. They have wealth and influence.

Drifting fascinated past a window, I catch sight of myself, reflected in the sunstruck glass. Not only am I present physically, I have changed. Tall, reed-slim, dressed in soft, white chiffon, a white, bell-shaped hat covers my hair. Only a brief glimpse of white, powdered face and scarlet, bow lips is allowed before I am jostled, an ivory cigarette holder slipping from my slender fingers. Glancing down I find white-stockinged legs and classic, Louis-heeled shoes. Perfection.

Suddenly I am visible and noticed. Women turn, eyes narrowing, cat-like, leaning protectively towards their men, gathering' up their tethers. Conversations faded to nothing, men look around with envy for my escort. Caught up in the silent furore. I act instinctively, allowing a distant smile to toy with my lips, not too friendly. There is a rush for my cigarette holder, a glass of champagne is pressed into my hand. I revel in the attention and stifle an inward giggle.

But now I begin to exaggerate, the dream loses its shape and blurs at the edges. My eyes closed I clutch desperately at the elusive world as it merges into reality. Yet a pleasant residue is left and I open my eyes with a feeling verging on triumph. Dusty, creased photographs stare blankly up at me, a disordered collage on the floor. I hug my legs and rest my chin on my knees, the absurd image returning momentarily, then vanishing completely. I grin.

*Night Watch The smooth, gentle rocking of the ship lulled me into a subdued quiet. The silence of the deck was a relief after the noise of the cabins below. I looked out at the starkness of the night. The stars looked down on me, pitying my innocence and, my limited knowledge of the universe. The moon's light drifted lazily in wafting beams down into the ocean where it lay, glistening. I felt the chill of the late night sea breeze in my face, blowing my hair and pulling at my clothes. I turned my attention to the ship.

Its majestic form floated evenly on the lapping ocean, and the light from the top of the crow's nest sent a sprinkle of brilliance down over the deck. If we had been closer to the shore, the ship would have seemed ghostly to the onlookers, moving, slowly, continuously onwards. We had been sailing for many months now and we were beginning to think of home, a warm bed, a family, but to this ship the sea was her home, her life. She came alive on these waters, sailing grandly from one port to the next, delivering her cargo of wheat and grains. This was her life and it had become mine too.

A cold spray of water awakened me from my thoughts. My watch read 12:05 and I stood up thinking only of the two remaining hours of night watch. It was a lonely job, just me, alone in the night. I couldn't feel the mateship of my companions up here, all I felt were the stars, their glaring eyes focused on me, and the ocean, gurgling in subdued laughter at my presence. I walked towards the rail and grasped the old, worn wood in my hands. I wondered how the many other night watchmen had felt, standing there and looking out. Could they feel this presence, this feeling of being watched? I did not know. All I knew was the ocean, swirling in slow whirling pools in the night, and the stars, their superior stares and swarming masses. I felt alone and afraid but I was comforted by the knowing light of the moon.

* Couch Potatoes Couch potatoes, otherwise known as square eyes, box heads or television addicts, are noted for their open-minded interest in television programmes. They will spend an entire day with their eyes 'glued' to the screen, only venturing from their chair during commercials and news breaks to feed and go to the bathroom.

While watching, the couch potatoes are in a state of subconsciousness, they are so involved in the programmes that they do not see or hear anything else.

Couch potatoes are relatively passive creatures, but if their vision to the screen is blocked or electrical appliances interfere with transmission they become very aggressive. Occasionally, a slight murmur will be heard from them if something extraordinary occurs on the set, but usually they are silent creatures.

The expression on their face portrays their lack of emotion.

The physical features of a couch potato are the open mouth, due to a loose bottom jaw, glassy eyes and, if they are sporty couch potatoes, bags beneath the eyes due to endless nights of tennis, cricket and golf.

The brain of a couch potato is remarkable. Couch potatoes are unable to remember simple chores, like putting out the garbage, no matter how often they are reminded, yet many of them can recite entire movie scripts word for word. They also have the ability to piece together the disjoined sequences from any american 'soapie' and comprehend what has happened.

They are extremely organized individuals. They stick to a set routine which is based on the television guide. Daylight savings has no effect on their behavioural cycle. Housework, which is minimal because they don't have time to create messy floors or dirty dishes, is completed during commercials.

Couch potatoes feed on simple meals which are easily prepared. Some favourites are Baked Beans, sandwiches, jaffles, pizzas and noodles. They are also notorious for snacking. These snacks consist of chips, biscuits, hot beverages, chocolate and other lollies.Couch potatoes stay in shape by hurriedly completing tasks during the five minute commercial breaks and by participating in the aerobics that they view each morning.

Without these couch potatoes, our community would be disadvantaged. They ensure that electricity workers, studio workers, television crews, door-to-door salespeople and food companies are kept in business. They also add to a better environment because they rarely venture from their homes so they don't use public transport or any other motor vehicle.

Russet, orange, brown, and yellow leaves scattered like chicken feed.

The wind is cold, icy and freezing.

The sky is heavy, dull and changeable and dusky Over everyone like a huge dome.

Camellias are growing, looking like the only ones to survive.

* A Delusion Of Freedom The creak of the old wooden front door announced the entrance of Astrid to the very suburban street. Dressed in overalls and a withered straw hat, she made her way to the long, green, snake-like hose. She picked up the limp piece of rubber, slowly turned on the tap and then with full consciousness let it go.

Watching it dance with an abstract lunacy, splurting its water in a frenzied lifelike madness.

Astrid stood entranced, oblivious to its wetness, she watched and felt the freedom of the scene. The build up was forgotten for this aggressive orgasm overpowered any thoughts of the past.

Now it was Astrid's time to be a part of it.

Transforming was easy and soon she was part of this desired insanity. Dancing, screaming, the feeling was now an obsession.

Astrid following the hose's movement, managing to soak her clothes with its wetness. She had forgotten every worry and all her tension had vanished, she was now herself.

Then the rain from the hose stopped and the life was killed from the green rubber. Astrid slowly looked up at the hand stopping her freedom. Mrs. Lewis from next door had turned off the tap and looked at Astrid in anger for disruptng her confined, yet naturally unnatural life.

Astrid was back in the suburban street. She fell to the wet grass beneath her and sobbed violently.

* Year 8 Camp - Grampians We were finally ready for take-off! Our Year 8 camp for 1989 was about to begin. However we were all quite apprehensive to step onto the minibus that would take us to live in the wildnerness for five whole days, but considering the icy weather "on top of the hill" we all agreed it couldn't be any worse. From the 17 to 21 April, we would be away from books, teachers and school, and that certainly lifted our spirits considerably.

When we arrived at Zumsteins, a camping ground in the Grampians, we met up with the others that had come up on the earlier bus. Half of the first bus were already packed for the adventure of the camp; an over-night sleep-out in a cave. We were split into three groups and each group was assigned a leader. With the four teachers who came with us from school and the five helpers from the Outdoor Activity Group, we felt prepared for anything - well almost anything.

The tents we were to live in went up without much trouble. The main threat was the kangaroos getting into our tents and raiding them.

The activities that had been planned were approached with plenty of enthusiasm. These included absailing, rock climbing, canoeing, hiking, walking plus others. Carrying out these activities provided each group with some humorous results. The overnight sleep-out was fun, the only hitch was the walk there.

On the way home, we were all pretty tired and crashed around the minibus in order to find a place to lie our heads. When we arrived back at school, we were tired and gladly dropped into our parents arms, our cars or our beloved beds in the boarding house.

I bet most of us were waiting patiently for someone to ask "How was camp?" We would answer, "It was ??"

"Oh Michael, do stop imagining that the clouds form things, " exclaimed his mother.

"But it's so much fun. There are many things up there that the clouds form," he replied.

Gosh! I've been asleep for an hour, what a dream! I'm so glad mum doesn't whip me. I'd better do my English homework now, thought Michael to himself, so he went downstairs to where he had left his homework before, and sat down to do it.

"Go! Do your homework right now, instead," said his mother who was getting very annoyed.

"Michael you're doing your homework!" exclaimed his mother.

Michael took one more glance at his cow and walked over to the table and sat down. He looked at this homework. Maths again!

Why does Miss Walters always give us work? It's just not fair!

"Yes, I've learnt my lesson," he replied

Michael finished his maths and decided to do his English homework after dinner. Then he went to help his mother set the table. While he did this he watched his little sister, Lucy play fondly with her brown teddy bear called Ernie. After a while mother told Lucy to wash her hands because dinner was going to be served soon.

"Oh, nothing," he answered.

Since it was still very light outside Michael went to the window after dinner to try to find something in the sky and he found one.

"You've what?" she asked.

Then he looks out of the window and thought to himself. I'll never day dream again. Suddenly he sees a rabbit in the sky.

Look, a rabbit, he says to himself. Well, maybe I won't give it up just do all my homework first!

* The Three Wishes * Once upon a time there lived a middle aged, childless couple who fought over little things every so often. Over the years, their relationship deteriorated slightly, and Marilla always seemed to be nagging Fred. Marina was a strong, determined woman, while Fred was meek and always needed to rely on Marilla for a little push in life.

"It's alrigh Marilla. Those wishes didn't bring us our joy - we're better off without them," Fred replied as he dropped his spoon.

Now one day, Marilla got up and went into the kitchen of their small house to make breakfast. As she put the toast on the griller, she noticed that the few dollars in the money jar used strictly for Fred's lunch, was gone. "Fred!" Manilla screeched up the stairs.

"You've spent all the money in our jar! Go to work and earn some more or you'll go hungry for the rest of the week."

By and by, she packed an apple and a slice of cheese in Fred's lunch box and sent him off to Fords.

It wasn't until mid-morning, when Fred was stripping down an old V8 engine, that he noticed a thin, golden french fry sitting in his tool kit. Impatiently he picked up the chip and was just about to throw it into the garbage compactor when he heard a tiny voice. "Help! Please don't chew me up - I'll give you three wishes if you put be down. Gently!" Fred couldn't believe that he heard this. He was the only person in the factory - everyone one else was at morning tea. He looked down at the soft yellow chip, which had now sprouted two legs. Fred's eyes popped out of his head, but, as a little boy he had heard the story of the three wishes over and over again, so he knew at to do. He said "French Fry, are you for real? Do you promise to give me three wishes?"

So that was the end of the story of the three wishes, and Marilla and Fred never fought again. The chip was never seen again, and the couple lived happily ever after.

"Anything at all," replied the chip, which had now whipped a pair of black sunglasses out of nowhere. Immediately Fred set down the fry, ran out of the factory and hopped into his dark blue Ford GL. When he got home, he told Marina his strange tale. Disbelievingly, she said "OK wiseguy, I wish I had a tub of margarine so I could make a - " suddenly she stopped and stared. There on the kitchen counter was a 500 gram container of Meadow Lea. "FRED!" Marilla screamed. "We're rich!" Fred replied rather shakily, "Marina, I think we should use this wisely. We should buy oh, I don't know, What do you think?"

"Fred, I wish you weren't so darned indecisive! Why can't you make up your own mind for once?"

Suddenly Fred turned a peculiar green colour and ordered Marilla to shut up, put on a coat and hop into the car. Marilla was very surprised - in all her 20 years of being married to Fred, she had never experienced this sort of behaviour from him. But she secretly smiled to herself and did as she was told.

Two hours later, after a vigorous game of tennis (Fred's favourite sport), they were sitting in an expensive club restaurant.

Marilla was starting to get agitated, partly because she hadn't had her say for quite a while, partly because she hated tennis, and partly because Fred had ordered her dinner without consulting her first. But it was Fred telling her she was a lousy cook that finally was the straw that broke the camel's back. "Fred, now you are being too bossy! I liked you better before, I wish you back to normal!"

* Cruel to be Kind The crisis that we are now faced with comes as a result of years and years of a so-called "baby boom". Although there are exceptions, on average, most human beings have at least five human lives to their credit. This has had a devastating effect on the world's population. Over the years these five human lives have produced more lives, these lives have produced more and so the chain continues. The over population of the earth is a problem that affects everyone and everything. Something needs to be done about it before it's too late.

There have been many attempts to slow the growth of the human race, but unfortunately they have, to date, been unsuccessful. The first show of concern was back in the 1980's. Only one country took action and limited one child per two adults.

This was marginally effective. Not everyone obeyed this law and enforcement was virtually impossible. Around the same time many of the then called "Third World" countries began increasing their populations at alarming rates. Families of nine and ten children were not uncommon. This trend has continued and as a result our current situation is dire.

Today the earth cannot take any more abuse. The enormous amount of people trying to live is having horrific effects. Despite the fact that there is not enough food or water to go around, there are also no materials for clothing or housing. There is not sufficient health care or sanitation and in most areas the situation is deteriorating. The earth has been stripped of all its natural resources. In many countries the over population is so bad that people must sit in one place, unable to move, do anything, or go anywhere. There is simply not enough room. Once a week planes fly over these groups dropping grain to feed them and spraying water for them to drink and cleanse their skins. Nothing more can be done. The countries that provide these services have problems of their own to worry about.

However, there may be hope for the future. The people living in the worst conditions will surely die soon. Until then, they are not producing any more children so the population is not increasing. Once all these people have died their bodies will eventually decompose and produce amazingly fertile soil. In years to come these soils will be the birth place of prolific vegetation. The earth may at last be regerminated and able to start a new life. This may sound slightly macabre, but that's humanity for you. You have to be cruel to be kind.

The soft scent of wilting flowers floats in the air And as I walk down the path, the constant chirp of a cricket sends a buzz through me.

This is how I remember Autumn!

4 A Winter Beach Up, towards the grey sky flew the red-winged bird, climbing higher and higher. It struggles against the bitter wind. A voice cries, "Pull to the left!" The red-winged bird lunges with flapping wings which are barely audibl due to the sea. The bird flies high from side to side, looping circles, swooping over the excited children below. Screaming in laughter, they run for cover as the bird swoops, but too low. Into a billion damp sand particles, it smashes.

"Watch out, here it comes again!" The children hit the gritty sand.

The wind blown sturdy grass sways back and forth. It whispers only to ears which listen carefully. Its moist smooth stems thrust out of the sand where their roots lie deep. The tidal debris is caught between their rustic shoots, by the mild storm last night.

Like mattered, wild hair, bits of driftwood, straws, feathers, shells and dry black coarse seaweed are entwined. They are unable to move amid the knotted confusion. Half abittle, with worn edges, lies within the jungle of grass. It is a reminder of man unable to escape the fate of nature, although weakening.

* Autumn at Morongo Autumn is a time when all Morongo Girls despair, For all on the Hill is cold, chilly and bare.

Walking to their bus, is always a sad trail, Half bent with heavy bag is not their usual style.

Their long and silky hair is blown into a mess, Chilly wind parts their kilts, something they detest.

They arrive in their classrooms, freezing and so cold, They beg for heaters, and are told they're being bold.

With faces blue and hands so numb, When asked to write an essay, their teachers think they are dumb, And so I come to Morongo's plea, For warmth they will bend down upon their knees.

A brief spot of sun explodes onto the red-winged bird. It circles five times.

"Fantastic! Do it again!" A dog watches the bird, eagerly awaiting its downfall.

The grey puffy clouds again form over the bluish, grey-green sea. The sea, although always green, is so different when wearing its summer colours of turquoise and aqua.

The wind strengthens and its bitter chill flows through the waving grass. A tingling shudder hits the children as they realise how crisp it is. They play - regardless.

Across the ocean green is its edge, the horizon. It is distorted because of the dark clouds and pouring rain. Shadowing the sea, it moves slowly to the land. Threatening and powerful, it engulfs the unprotected land. However, following silently, a bright rainbow of coloured light beams, streaks across the sky. The pot of gold is hidden beneath the waves.

The dog barks. The red-winged bird swoops and the rain begins to fall.

* The Wind The wind is like a silent heart, beating through the air.

Making a pathway of a shadowy life, but not of great despair Although the wind can carry much anger, then suddenly scream out its rage.

The wind can be placid, serene and tranquil, to leave a cool breeze to end the stage.

"Quickly! Everyone to the tree." Like a flock of sheep, they head for shelter.

The once peaceful sea swirls and grows. It crashes down in anger as its white paws grasp for first place in an unwinable race. Over rocks, the foamy water smashes. The rocks erode gradually, but still unnoticeable to the eye. The fury of th sea is expressed in no words, but one is still able to hear its anger.

Smashing against the salty rocks, the sea breaks into a thousand shattered white marbled glass pieces, upwards, into the air. The white rippled pulses across the sea, rock up and down to the beach where they swerve and swell towards dry land. As soon as it begins to stop raining the rough, choppy sea ceases.

"The red-winged bird again took flight, high in the air. "Wow, look at it go!" a child screamed. There it hovered in the winter sky, over the unpredictable sea. * * * * Ilsa Kuiper 58

* The Disabled have a lot to give I sit in a room; a solitary tear lolls in the corner of my eye.

Pulled across my mind is a thick, black, heavy curtain - I will myself not to think, not to remember. I stare at the floor -that cold, grey, uninviting lino - from now on it is my life. All my life stands for, and means to me is there for anyone to trample on. I am experiencing living death - my body is dead but my mind is still alive. Two weeks ago I was a normal teenager! I lived in a normal house with normal parents - living a normal life. Now I am a disabled freak in a wheelchair. And I can't handle it.

They think I'm psycho - no one's said anything but 1 can tell. I can tell by the way they act, the way they speak to me -as if I'm mentally retarded as well. My thoughts, feelings and emotions are different to the ones I used to have. I heard Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" on the radio yesterday and I didn't cry once. That's how impassive I've become.

I read again what I wrote on that Tuesday ever-so-long-ago. It feels like an eternity has passed since then. I am still in the hospital but I'm happy. I've made friends with people that I would never have dreamed about meeting before my accident. People with disabilities, deformities - things I was once blind to, until my eyes were rudely jerked open one day last summer.

All the people here have something in common - they have a will to live that is so strong it is indestructible, and they all have something to give. My friends have taught me about love -not the superficial love I was used to - no, that beautiful, powerful, spiritual love that knows no limits, has no exceptions. And they taught me to accept life for what it is - take one day at a time. But most importantly they taught me to accept myself -because me, the real me is encased in this body. They gave me love and support and guidance.

I realise now that it doesn't matter what is on the outside whether a person is in a wheelchair or is deformed - the important part is who they are on the inside.

There was a deep hum of power, a shuddering vibration and the cliff-face behind them began to divide itself. A long, horizontal line appeared, widened into a gap, widened still more until it was a door. Beyond the door a brightly lit tunnel sloped downwards. Robots came out of the tunnel.

There were dozens of them, massive black figures moving on a hovercraft base. They looked like giant metal chessmen. The sculpted metal heads were a brutal version of the human face. and articulated metal arms held a variety of energy weapons.

They glided into a semicircle, surrounding the three spacemen.

"Soldier robots?" whispered Kyron. "I thought they were forbidden?"

Markos was surprised but not alarmed. Robots weren't dangerous. They couldn't be. One simple directive was built into every robot brain. No robot must ever harm a human being.

Markos spread his tentacles in the universal galactic sign for peace and spoke to the nearest robot "Why has my ship been forced down?"

The robot made no reply. "Probably not speech programmed," said Harrak. He went up to the robot and thumped it on the chest with his huge gauntleted hand. "Listen to me, we want to see your ruler."

A voice said quietly, "I rule here".

Another robot appeared from the tunnel. It was very different from the others, tall and completely humanoid in shape, its smooth gleaming body made of burnished golden metal. The metal face was human too, with the stylised beauty of an ancient statue. The golden robot seemed to resemble a human masked in gold. The huge eyes were crystals of glowing red. The soldier robots drew back respectfully as the golden figure walked towards the three spacemen.

Harrak wasn't impressed. "Listen, you're just in charge of this work team. We want to talk to someone human".

The golden robot's voice was deep and mellow. "I rule here,- it repeated. "I am Mask marauder".

My life may never be as "normal" as it once was but I Have a Dream. A dream to enlighten others about us 'the Disabled' and to free us from prejudice. We have a lot to give if only given the chance.

* The Mask Three figures in silvery plasti-armour moved cautiously down the ship's ramp. The freighter had landed close up against a cliffface, in a rockey valley fringed by low, jagged mountains. The air was thin and chilly, and a distant wind moaned eerily. Banks of thick white mist swirled and drifted across the barren landscape, sometimes clearing, sometimes closing in again.

Markos looked at Kryon, who was carrying a portable energydetector.

"Anything?"

"The energy source is directly below us, sir, somewhere in the centre of the a stroid. I still say it could be a magnetic core."

Harrak was outraged. He was one of those humanoids who tended to look down on robots, seeing them as necessary evils.

What's more, Harrak liked a robot to look like a robot. This golden figure with its uncannily human appearance filled him with hatred and fear. "Get out of my way", he growled, and thrust his way past the tall robot, heading for the tunnel entrance. The nearest solider robot swung around covering him with its weapon.

Markos shouted. "Harrak, no!" He sprung forward in a spiderlike leap, meaning to pull his engineer back. But the movement took him directly into the path of the robot's gun. A savage energy-blast smashed through his armour and slammed him to the ground.

Kyron and Harrak stcod very still. "His death was unnecessary", said Mask marauder in that same calm voice. "But your own folly was the cause. Obey, and you will be given the opportunity to live and serve The Mask."

Three children, one without sight, whirled amidst flying hair and skirts as the rope whipped around their ankles. Panting in delight their young calls could be heard along Jamieson Street, intermittently broken by screeching cars or calling mothers. The rope twisted on and on through the day entangling sweet memories in the minds of its users.

A round dish of light spread over her brow, spattered with flecks of blood that the surgeon's gloved hands had spread. Her eyes, white spheres, were probed by delicate instruments. The sight of this child was being searched for. Black lenses craning over her, magnified the pools of colour that had never beheld the wonders of the world. The sun, trees, stars...

Feet tangled the rope and a minor squabble broke out as to who had 'tripped up first!' Their raised voices were mirrored by furrowed brows as heated, childish anger swept through the game.

The child without sight voiced her opinions strongly. She sidled up to an older girl who stood with arms crossed, exhibiting the power of infinite knowledge at eleven yars of age. Tinkling music from the next street quickly settled the tiff as the street deserted and mother's purses were gleaned for coins. Cool, sweet icecream beckoned the hoardes of children. Three to four across, they rounded the corner, straining to reach the van's painted sides.

Then it was very quiet, as cones were devoured and angers soothed.

Thick bandages pressed tightly on her skull as beneath, her eyes roamed. Stitched with black thread, the lids fluttered painfully, while her mind broadened, trying to imagine all that she had never seen.... trying to anticipate all that is for the seeing. An end to one existence and the beginning of another.

The rope swept mud and leaves and blossoms as it wound on and on. Friends were made and lost in weekly succession and quarrels were begun and finished. Now she sat on the front steps of her house and gazed longingly at the children in front of her.

Her eyes searched their faces for recognition, acceptance, friendship. Quick to forget, old playmates had left and strangers taken their place. Two years was too long to remember the girl who had once cried, fought and loved with them all. She had 'gone away for a long time...' they said, an eternity in child terms.

Going into the house she returned with a bundle in her arms.

The children's voices ran out along the street as they played together.... and still the rope twisted on and on. She reached the gate of her house and stepped out onto the pavement. With bandaged eyes she struggled to find what she thought she had found her perfect world.

* Thoughts of Silence Luminous colours flash before my eyes. I am able to see the lush greeness of the leaves on the willows in summer, but I am unable to hear the kookaburra's laughter. Whenever the world is too loud for me, I listen to my thoughts in silence.

As I sit on the riverbank, contemplating my life, I am able to take in the crisp eucalyptus smell of the leaves from the gum trees, and see the harsh dryness of the branches as they fall to the ground, yet I am unable to hear the crackling they make on their journey to death.

The river before me flows with serenity, being disturbed only by the occasional jumping fish, or twig that has been carelessly tossed in. The murky brown colour of the water somehow manages to look cool and refreshing compared with the muggy heat that has surrounded by thought patterns. The reeds that line the banks with colours of yellow and pale green are a stark contrast against the depths of the unknown. The swishing noise of the water flowing through the reeds is too loud for me as I sit and think, so I switch off the world around me, and listen to my thoughts in silence.

The hum of the speedboat approaching along the winding river is not enough to distract my thoughts. It is as though even this man-made noise has succumbed to my overbearing thoughts.

As the boat reaches me, I am able to comprehend the sound of the waterskies slapping against the glassy, undisturbed waterway, but I am unable to actually hear it.

The laughter of the children playing in the shallows nearby, and the criews of pain as one is caught on a dangling fishing line, are able to be comprehended only because of the vivid detail of the facial expression. The look of fear and anguish is easily recognized. As I sit on the river bank, I can see all of this, but hear nothing as I listen to my thoughts in silence.

What are my thoughts? I think of nothing but a world of silence and peace. I think of what the world would be like if everyone could sit on a riverbank and think of silence. The world would be a place free of nuclear war, and the children would be able to frolic and giggle in the shallows for ever and ever.

* The Final Race "All crews, are you ready? - row!" We sat at the start watching the crews race down the river. The referee called the next race to the line. Nervously we waited at the start as we were the final race - the First Fours Final. The banks of the river were full of supporters waiting in anticipation for their own crews to row down in front of them. As soon as a boat came into sight, the cheering would start with people yelling and screaming to urge on their crews.

It had been a strenuous day and now we had made it to the final. Earlier in the morning we had rowed two other races and we were all starting to feel the effects. Blisters had appeared on the top of our already calloused palms. Our legs had begun to ache and we were all feeling physically as well as mentally drained. I turned around to look at Sarah; the beads of sweat hung across her forehead and her nose was sunburnt.

George started to get aggravated. I could feel the boat jerk as she slid her seat up and down the slide. She started dragging her oar onto the water making pools on the mirror-like surface. She was beginning to get bored. She was ready to race and we all felt the same - we wished that the race would begin.

Louise sat in front of me, her head resting on her knees. I noticed the tightly braced muscles across her shoulders and the way her calves had developed. She did not move, but sat with her hands clasped around her legs staring across the river. She was tense and nervous - this was our last race and we had to win.

I thought about this race and what it meant to us. We had already beaten eight crews to get into the final. All we had to do now was to beat another two crews, and then we would be able to claim the title of the best schoolgirls crew in Victoria. I remembered all of the training nights on this same stretch of the river and the preparation we had done during the summer vacation.

We had devoted our life to rowing and concentrated totally on being the best. The time had finally arrived for us to prove ouselves.

The starter called us to the line. "Coxswains, my start will be All crews, are you ready? - If there is no response from the coxswain by raising her hand I shall say - Row!" The crews settled quickly in their correct lanes, everyone sensing the importance of this race. The starter raised his hand, "All crews are you ready?

- Row!" Instantly Louise set the rhythm and we all fell into our set pattern. Together we pushed our legs down and the boat slid swifty through the water. For a brief moment I looked out of the boat to see where we were in relation to the other crews. Second! We were second. We had to be first! Louise started to pick up the rating - we had to pass the leading crew. Gradually, stroke by stroke, we caught up to them. We rowed along side the crew for a few hundred metres and then started to pull away from them. We were leading!

Now all we had to do was stay in front. We reached the bridge and knew that we had five hundred metres to go. This was the toughest part of the race. Our legs were aching and our breathing was irregular. We could hear people cheering and as we got closer to the finish line, the shouting became clearer. They were barracking for us! Instantly the pain disappeared and we pushed our legs down harder, determined to win and be the best crew in Victoria. The bell rang - the race was over, and we were the champions! But what would we do now?

*The Endless Battle Dim, dark, dank, decrepit - my surroundings precisely. I live in a matchbox. I lead a life of monotony, bound by intangible ropes, and unseen by any outsiders. I am without care, neglected shamefully by those who are meant to be my parents. Parents is what they were; for a few years they loved me, but I became a problem, an unrequired burden, so they locked me up - they didn't throw away the key. They kept it and looked in on me occasionally. Mine is a battle to survive; a battle to keep from being bitter: one almost impossible.

I seem to dwell on an edge - teetering - waiting for something to spill over the edge, as running water cascades over a cliff-face.

But I cannot imagine that this spill will be beautiful. I try to shut out thoughts of anything bad that may happen and concentrate on all the good aspects of my world. I find myself slipping into a world of make believe as there is only minimal good in my life.

I dream of being loved, of someone really caring for me. I know what it is like to be loved, as I was before I was thrown away like a doll someone has grown out of. And I think that is worse - to know what might have been; to know what other children have. I have tried several times to escape, but always a keeper has been waiting for me; watching. I've discovered that it is easier to be given a bowl of porridge every day for staying than a thrashing and no food. So I sit and imagine. I build my castles in the sky: my fantasies.

My life is insecure. I know that. Lying curled up in a corner, shivering with fear is not secure. All I can do is remember security; recall the days when my mother was available to lean on. I try to think of myself with children, but everything is a blur.

I'm beginning to feel that maybe children are just toys. Maybe all parents discard children as a dirty cloth. But then I remember the good times and try so desperately to work it all out. I can't So I sit here, puzzled. A war is raging inside me. Is love only temporary? Everytime I feel that I've nearly solved this baffling mystery, something new appears on the surface and I'm thrown back into bewilderment. I'm sure life wasn't meant to be as difficult as this. I'm sure that the God my mother used to talk about didn't mean me to not have the privilege of a shower. I'm sure He knew something of love. I just wish someone would help me. I wish someone could end my battle.

* The Day Before Yesterday Yesterday began in much the same way as today. The sun rose slowly in the eastern sky, the darkness of midnight began to fade, nature and traffic alike came alive and sunlight filtered warmly through closed blinds.

My alarm went off, blasting the stillness of my room and jolting my body into consciousness. I stiffened, relaxed, then groaned. Another day, another morning, too soon. With my eyes still closed, I crawled out of bed and hit the cold floor boards.

Thus began the morning ritual of having a shower, waking up, getting dressed, having breakfast. Half dressed, I ran around the house yelling "Socks, socks, anyone seen some clean socks."

Shouts of "Mum, did you buy any Weaties?"

"Honey, is my blue shirt ironed?"

"Tea will be late tonight everyone, I'm paying back my flexitime," filled the house with its pre work/school frenzy.

I sat down at the kitchen bench and began to shovel in my cereal. Dad spread out his newspaper beside me and we munched in harmony.

"You in the office all day Dad?" I asked.

"Yes, could even be home early, would you like me to pick you up?"

* What A Life!

The dark sidestreet was empty, except for' a starving human shivering from the unwanted gust of wind. His old, wrinkled face was pale, obviously malnourished and his scraggly, brown hair housed thousands of tiny, unwanted bugs. He provided a home for many others, yet he didn't have a home for himself: Every day he would walk the streets until about six o'clock when the sun would go down, then he returned to the ugly sidestreet in King's Cross.

The only clothes covering the tall, but limp body, were a pair of scraggly faded jeans and a filthy green tee shirt. The only item of clothing to remind himself of his "teen" years, was a dilapidated overcoat, which he placed on the ground to make a soft surface for him to sit on. In his left hand he held a brown paper bag which surrounded a half-full bottle of wine, which he drank to give him the only sense of happiness. On his feet he wore a pair of moccasins, with holes where his toes would feel the cold. Wherever he walked, they made abrasions on his feet, because of their worn soles.

An old, grey woollen blanket kept him warm at night, when there were strong winds and on rainy nights it helped to protect him from the rain. Nobody ever walked in the old street, nor did anybody ever say hello to him during the day. Yet, he suited the surroundings and the surroundings suited him. He lived every day as it came, but one day, soon, he would die. He knew it would happen. In one way he would be sad to end his life, but in another he would be happy that his suffering and loneliness would end.

"'S okay Dad, I'm going shopping tonight, I have to find a dress for graduation." I couldn't help but smile and Dad just laughed, he understood.

"Don't worry about the price honey, your Mum and I will work something out, just find something you love. You'll look beautiful in anything anyway, - you'll knock Dean dead," he added slyly. I grinned.

"I think you're a little biased but I'm glad somebody thinks so."

I was happy and he knew it "Even if they're nearly fifty and your father." We both laughed then and Dad kissed me and left. "Happy hunting," he yelled through the door.

It was morning that began like any other and continued like any other. Frenzy and companionship in the morning, hard slog during the day. It began like any other but ended in a way I will remember all of my life. When I got home that night my father was dead. He had a heart attack on the living room floor at approximately five o'clock. Last night was a nightmare, the beginning of something I can't fully understand yet. One thing is clear though, for me, there was no day before yesterday - it was another world.

* Victorian Tea Party The young lady sat, delicately poised on a velvet chair. She reached politely to take a piece of Victorian bun from the fine china plate. She daintily sipped her lemon tea, and spoke quietly to her friend who was sitting beside her. They were both wellspoken and educated young ladies, dressed superbly for the occasion in long, flowing, satin gowns and finely crocheted lace gloves. They seemed to greatly enjoy each other's company and they looked happily and inquisitively at all the other ladies in their pale, delicately coloured gowns.

* Nature's Way The old man gazed into the night, To the lone survivor upon the hill, Round the tree gleamed pale moonlight, Forming an outline dark could not fill.

The wind caressed its outstretched hands.

Gently whispered in a waiting ear, Speaking of spirits and faraway lands, Murmuring softly the time was near.

And the age old limbs raised up to the sky, Gnarled and bent, yet still proud and strong, Just sagged a little and breathed a sigh, Under the weight they had borne so long.

The old man thought of his youthful days, When birds in the sapling nested, It provided shade from the sun's harsh rays, And under strong boughs sheep rested.

Leaving the dwarf of mere man to shame, Defiant and strong 'gainst the winter bleak, Little knowing that time can maim, That age will render all things weak.

Every Friday was market day in the centre of Sao Paulo. Mum and I would buy our groceries there, because it was cheap and the quality was far better than in the supermarket. The Rua Paulista would be blocked off to all traffic, and stands of fruit, vegetables, toiletTies and even garments appeared. Fruiterers and other stand owners would attempt to sell their produces noisily. I enjoyed watching people bargain using loud voices and making agitated gestures. After a volatile discussion over the price of a watermelon, the customer usually walked away with the better deal.

On our way, we would see the sums on our left and right. At first they horrified me, with their dirty children playing in the streets and their poverty stricken huts of metalsheet and cardboard. But, after driving past them nearly every day, they just made me sad. I knew that even in ten years' time nothing would have changed.

One day, however, I noticed a little boy, no older than seven or eight, steal a packet of felt-tipped pens. He probably needed them for school, but perhaps his parents were unable to afford them. He was spotted by the stand's owner, who immediately yelled for help. The child tried desperately to escape but his way was blocked by five grown men. These wasted no time in punching into him with all their strength. A woman standing next to me cried out aloud, but her cries were no match for the child's agonized screams. They stunned all the people in the market square, who stood in silence merely watching. No one moved to help him.

They kept punching and kicking hm and I can still recall the sounds which filled my dreams for several nights thereafter.

When he finally hung limp and worn out in the mens' hands, they dumped his lifeless body on the filthy ground and backed away, laughing. In a matter of seconds they had disgracefully murdered that black little boy with the big, black, frightened eyes.

And still no one dared to move, each one of us absorbing the terrible scene which had just been enacted before us. Mum started to sob violently, but I was in shock and felt faintness and nausea welling up in me.

When we left it was forever, never to return.

Present returned with a mighty blast, Tears in torrents fell from high, Blinding light on earth was cast, Then darkness blended land with sky.

I am now certain that those men were never prosecuted and that not many tears were shed for that child. In the political and social disorder of Brazil crimes like these occur quite frequently.

They are very much hidden from the tourists' eyes, who only see the beauty of the country, because that is what they want to see.

Next morn sun rose above house and hill, Nature welcomed the new born day, Yet the old man on his bed rested still, And the tree in the green grass lay.

I had lived in Sao Paulo for five years and had seen and heard of disgusting and criminal incidences, far worse than the one mentioned above.

* The Devil in Me The intricate lace tablecloth lay on the table. The sterling silver cutlery beamed with life. The crystal wine glasses caught the burning candle light, forming a spectrum of colour, while the arrangement of roses stood ready. In the kitchen the succulent aroma of roast pork was filtering through the oven door as the freshly prepared crayfish patiently waited to be served. The door bell had buzzed and the guests were arriving. As a six year old I was to be in bed within a hour. It was then that my devilish instincts took over.

"Hello sweetheart, goodness me! You never stop growing!'

These were long lost friends of my mother who greeted me with a chocolate frog and mum with a whole box of peppermint creams.

"Why do I only get a frog when mum gets a box of chocolates?" I asked myself in protest. Busily I collected bunches of flowers and bottle of champagne as other guest arrived. I then obligingly passed around the pre-dinner nibbles, and I was told to say goodnight. Before long I was safely tucked up in bed (or at least that's what they thought!) and slowly I was dreaming off to sleep.

My mind was now busy at work. I was trying to figure out just how I could sample the food in the kitchen, particularly the crayfish. After all, I had been fed canned spaghetti on toast two hours ago, and I was hungry. I decided I would plan to creep into the kitchen and I would eat one crayfish leg. This was wonderful in theory, but putting it into practice was a different matter.

It was now time to put my plan into action. I slowly moved out into the kitchen. As I stood on the cold kitchen tiled floor, I continued on with my plan. I snapped one crayfish leg open, and I sucked the juicy meat from within the shell. One leg didn't seem enough, so I ate another, and another and another. Without realising it I had demolished a whole plate of crayfish legs. Quite contented, I headed back to bed.

On my return, the consequences of my deed suddenly dawned upon me. I had eaten every single crayfish leg! I put my brain into first gear, and I darted out to the kitchen. I Came to the conclusion that no one would notice if I could somehow stick the legs back together. After careful consideration, I found the cellotape and I methodically reassembled the legs. Innocently I escaped the scene, and I could now have a sound night's sleep.

I was in bed looking at the ceiling listening to the chatter of guests as the clunking of chairs indicated the commencement of dinner. Peace reigned for sometime, until I decided my life was no longer worth living. After peals of laughter from the dining room, a very firm spoken and furious mother marched into my room, and what followed I'd rather forget!

At the conclusion of dinner the once organised kitchen was confused, with a mound of dishes and a plate of fully-assembled meatless crayfish legs! The day after was a day when I became very unpopular, but the days that followed were to be full of laughter and hysteria as the story of "Natalie and the crayfish legs" echoed around our family. To this very day we will still have a laugh about it, while I wonder whether I still have that same devil in me!

* In Retrospect The shadows lengthened and the air became cool. Another day was ending. The thought slowly entered my mind that I should leave: afterall they were probably looking for me. I dragged my eyes away from the roaring ocean in front of me and studied my watch, holding it towards the few rays of sun on the horizon. Not yet, I convinced myself. I mean, it's not that late. If they want me they can come and get me. It's so peaceful.

I couldn't go back there now. I could feel their mock sympathetic looks bearing down on me. No thanks, they can keep their fake friendliness for the minister on Sundays. They'll want explanations. They'll sit me down in the kitchen and 'talk' with me, or as it usually turns out, at me. My mind was racing away. I clenched my fists in anger as I thought about it. 'It' being my situation.

I had come home from school, dumped my bag in the hallway spilling books, paper and pencils everywhere. I entered the kitchen expecting the usual sight, cats and mess. Instead, the kitchen was immaculate, my parents sat around the table sipping tea nervously as the cats cried at the door. I stopped, obviously there was something wrong. Dad had never been home this early before and the last time the kitchen was this tidy were the weeks I had off school with the measles.

"Good day at school dear?" asked Mum. "Sure," I knew I sounded nervous as I reached inside the fridge for a bottle of Coke.

"I've made you some tea, Diane." That was the last straw. The last time they let me drink tea was a New Year's Eve when they were so drunk they didn't even remember their own names.

"OK, what's going on?" I demanded.

They started to explain. Staring and stopping. I sat there like a block of marble. Their words drifted over me. My mouth gaped open and I could feel the colour draining from my face. Stunned, I looked at both of them staring into the brown liquid in their tea cups.

I leaped from my chair, sending it flying and flung my cup at the wall and watched the contents staining the rose-printed wall paper. I ran screaming into my bedroom, where I threw my china, books, clothes, radio, everything that wasn't nailed down, around the room. I wasn't crying, just furious.

"I won't go," I screamed until I could scream no more.

I wouldn't go to boarding school. They were going to live in England and leave me in an institution. They didn't care. I fled the house. By now I was choking back the tears. I won't let them hear me crying. They just want to hurt me. They called my name as I ran. I looked back at them standing at the door. Mum was crying. * Caroline Millard, 10M

* The Mask The sun was rising over a dull, green sea, its warming rays barely penetrating the thick grey clouds. From the dunes where I stood, I looked along the damp shoreline. A lone figure sat on the beach, scanning the horizon, listening to the pounding waves and the sad cries of the gulls.

Oceana Amery often sat on the beach by herself. She had beautiful eyes that were bluer and deeper than the deepest sea, and her hair was long, flowing and sunbleached. She also had a twin brother, Nich, who had disappeared on a clear summers day about a year ago. Oceana was the last person to see him, swimming near the beach. She had believed ever since that he would return, long after all her friends gave up hope and advised her to let go, Nich wouldn't come back now. Oceana isolated herself from her friends and returned to the beach each day, gazing at the waves as they broke, expecting to see Nich by the sea wall with his surfboard.

Like the sun rising over a brilliant blue sea, on a new and perfect day, a warm smile slowly crept over Oce's face.

"Race you over the dunes," she challenged, her character was coming back. Oce's mask had finally lifted.

Oceana seldom spoke, and would often walk off alone for hours, sometimes days, yet nobody would question her. Her face showed no particular expression - it was like a painting - hauntingly beautiful, not dull, but no longer laughing or happy, her expression always the same. Oceana and Nich had been close, without her brother, Oce4na seemed lost and lonely.

As I walked along the beach, a cold breeze ruffled my hair, and the salty air stung my face. I sat down next to Oceana; she didn't move.

"Hey Oce". I said, notifying her of my presence, not expecting a reply. Her eyes shifted to me for a second, then fixed back on the horizon.

Oce looked cold. Judging from the state of her hair, she'd been out all night. I put my jacket around her shoulders. She nodded appreciately. After a while, I began to feel the cold, so I started getting up to leave.

"Please don't go," Oce pleaded softly. This was the first time she'd spoken to me for almost a year, so I agreed to stay.

"You been here all night?" I asked. Oce nodded slowly. For the first time, I noticed she'd been crying.

"Nich's not coming back," whispered Oce in a husky voice. "I guess I've known that for ages."

I sat with Oce for another hour, hugging my knees, lost for words and freezing cold. Oce picked up a beautiful shell and rolled it around in her palms. It was unusual, and had been Nich's favourite, I'd seen it at their house many times before.

Oce stood up, and threw it as far as she could. I watched as it hit the water and floated briefly, then it was gone, washed under by a wave.

The stillness of the atmosphere on a cold and wintry night, lay my cute chubby baby dear sleeping in its blankets tight.

As the child lay motionless in the safety of its cot.

Outside, a cry of the cat echoed from the darkness, the infant stirred but not a lot.

The brushing of the leaves on the window, and the creaking of our shattering roof.

I can't stand the thought of being a widow, I love her so much I'll give her proof.

I'll climb all mountains, just for her I'll give her my precious remains, and that's the love of her mother. x, Berilyn Bernicke Yr 8H * * -5

JEAN SUTHERLAND I have come to share with you some of the memories of the one we mourn today, one who has been my friend for more than 50 years. Jean Sutherland was a Master of Science with 1st. class honours at Melbourne. That speaks for itself. She was a demonstrator at her university for some years but she decided to share her knowledge with others, so I was pleased to welcome her to Adelaide P.L.C. now Seymour College, as Science Mistress. She had a great affection for those Adelaide girls and had been able to keep in touch with many through the Melbourne branch of that College. One of those girls is here today both as a friend and as a representative of the Melbourne Branch.

When war ended Miss Sutherland returned to her home state and I was happy to welcome her to Morongo. Very soon she became head of staff. Her long association with Morongo -33 years- was interrupted when she took a year's leave to teach and gain further experience in a Welsh Boarding School, situated in England. Over the years I have appointed many members of Staff, but none more able than Jean Sutherland. In spite of her ability she was rather diffident, even humble, though I do not believe that this was always recognised.

Morongo owes a great deal of gratitude to her. The successes of her pupils testify to the sound training at her hands. The immediate response of one of her girls, on hearing of her death, would, I am sure, be echoed by many others,"If it were not for Miss Sutherland I would certainly not have the position I now hold!" Jean Sutherland possessed an inquiring mind. She had a keen sense of humour and a ready wit. I must confess that this caused many to be afraid of her until they came to know her better, and realist how human she was.

She never stopped leaming,taking up the Italian language and continuing after her retirement. She had a wide knowledge, amazing us with the extent of this. The computer is so much a part of our world today that she felt she must find out all about it , so she was planning to take a course to explore its mysteries..the enquiring mind at work ! She read widely, she loved the theatre, particularly the ballet and she rarely missed a performance. She broadened her mind with travel, visiting England several times as well as other unusual places.

And so life flowed along smoothly.I am sure she looked back on her years spent with her two close friends Phyllis Evans and Edith Leigh as the happiest time in her life. The three lived tranquilly at No 10 Buckland Avenue enjoying the company of many friends who called on them. Jean's particular responsibility in the household was the garden, which gave her great joy though maybe some stiff muscles. She certainly was NOT domesticated.

This side was left to much more capable hands, but when much later she was thrown on her own resources, she rose to the occasion very quickly. I well remember her simple pride and amusement, for she could laugh at herself, when she produced her first cake - a banana cake. I can imagine the scientific precision she brought to its preparation. The three friends took full part in the life of the community. Members of the Commonwealth Society and the Victoria League with us today certainly appreciated their great interest.

And then came sadness. The tranquility of their lives was shattered, first by the illness of Edith Leigh and later by the illness and death of Phyllis Evans. Jean had a strange attitude to illness especially of her own, dismissing it lightly even impatiently, but she revealed deep compassion for the suffering of her two friends. And so over the past few years she devoted her life to caring for them both. The death of Phyllis Evans was a great grief to her, but she refused to be overwhelmed by this loss, disciplining herself to think rather of the happy years they had spent together.

Jean carried on her self sacrificing work for Edith Leigh, visiting her three or four times each week, giving her encouragement and practical help. This was not easy, not being a driver, she had to rely on public transport to reach the Newcomb Nursing Home, though good friends with cars frequently came to the rescue.

And so she spent the afternoon of her last day on earth with Edith and next day she quietly slipped away. A shock ! Yes, a VERY GREAT shock to those she leaves behind, but how merciful for her! Those who knew her well realize that she would never have grown reconciled to the life of an invalid. She will be sadly missed. What will be our memories of her ? Will they be of her special gifts, of her very successful career, or her brilliant mind?

My belief is that she will be remembered rather by her humanity, her self sacrificing devotion and loyalty to those she loved.

* PRESIDENT'S REPORT The Old Collegians' year began with the Annual Meeting held in the Music Room in the Founder's Dining Hall on 26 November 1988, followed by the reunion luncheon in the Dining Hall. Our guests at the luncheon were Mrs Watt and the officials elect for 1989, also representatives from sister Old Collegians' Associations. The toast to the school was proposed by Nora SutoriusValk who was on one of her visits to Australia from Holland. Mrs Watt responded on behalf of the school and the School Captain, Virginia Millard reported on the school activities.

At the conclusion. of the luncheon, we all gathered for the opening of the restored Rose Garden. The new roses were just starting to bloom showing us what we can expect from the garden that had been designed by Lorrie Lawrence (Lorraine Wood).

Thank you Lorrie for generously giving your professional advice.

The project became much larger than was anticipated. There was a lot of hard work to be done removing the old hedge and numerous truck loads of loam were needed to make the area suitable for replanting. We wish to thank the school for the assistance. Old Collegians' donations to the rose garden purchased all the roses, lavender and Pittosporum needed and a new garden seat was in place on opening day. It was with pleasure we were able to ask Lorrie to cut the ribbon at the entrance.

On Friday night, 25 November, the 1965-70 year reunion was held at Berkeley Lodge. Approximately two hundred old girls attended along with an excellent representation of staff. Thank you Lyn Collins (Crellin) and Helen Hill (Darby) for organising such a successful reunion.

We have held our usual sporting social days. The tennis day held at the school on 6 March was enjoyed by all who participated. Thank you Anne Waayers (Jarman) for organising this day. The combined Old Girls' Golf Day and luncheon was held on 29 May at the Geelong Golf Club. This day was arranged by Marjory Carroll (Field) with assistance from representatives from other Associations.

I thank Sally and Kathy Egan, Tracy Hargreaves and Lyn Collins (Crellin) for representing us in the Sun Tennis Cup. Thank you Lyn for arranging the team. Our representatives at the Sun Golf Cup were Pam Amezdroz (Umhauer), Jessie Beckman (McCallum), Prue Cooke (McEwan), Margaret Lamb (Keddie), Joy Hocking (Baker), and Marjorie Poulston (Barnes). A sincere thanks to all.

As many of you are aware, Morongo has formed the Morongo Foundation to enable further development of the school. The Foundation is made up of two funds, the Education Fund and the Building Fund. The Old Collegians has made a contribution to the Education Fund which grants up membership to the Foundation.

I would like to thank Mrs Watt and all committee members for their support during the year, especially my Secretary, Jeanette Bell and Treasurer, Jeanette Middleton.

For many years Marjory Carroll (Field) has been one representative at the Sun Golf Cup meetings held in Melbourne and has been an organiser of the Geelong Golf Day over the years. Marjory feels it is time for someone else to take her place, at the Golf Day. I was able to make a small presentation to her in recognition of her work. Joy Hocking is taking over Marjory's job.

As in other years we assisted at the Fair. Committee girls who were not involved on other stalls made litres of fruit salad from fruit donated by students. We also made a small contribution to Open Day by opening the Archives room and showing visitors some items from the past.

Again we have been guests at functions held by Old Collegians' of other schools, PLC, MLC and MCEGGS Melbourne and PLC, MLC, Geelong branches, Hermitage and Sacred Heart. I received a very warm welcome from June McColl (Orchard) and Dorothy Ruxton (Brown) at the President's Day meeting in March of the National Council of Women, thank you both for keeping us informed about the Council.

For many years, Edith Leigh and Jean Rentoul have been the Trustees of the MOCA. They have relinquished this important responsibility this year. Bev Egan (Bell), Jeanette Bell (Shrimpton) and I visited them both to thank them for their dedication over the years. Our new trustees are Judy Bent (Wallis), Anne Howarth (Lindsay) plus the current treasurer.

We have held two other functions this year, a film night in June and a morning coffee morning in the Archives room at Morongo in August. We were entertained by four music students during the morning. Thank you to Mr Hancock, Director of Music for arranging the programme.

Prior to the School Church Service at St. David's, I was invited to afternoon tea at Mrs Watt's home to meet Sir Edward Dunlop who was to give the address at the service. Sir Edward Dunlop's late wife, Helen Ferguson, was an Old Collegian, a past Prefect and Sports Captain in 1931.

Many Old Collegians attended Founders' Day Morning Assembly this year to hear Miss Shaw reminisence over the years she first taught at Morongo and of her time as Head Mistress. For Old Collegians present listening to Miss Shaw brought back memories of our school days.

Committee girls are gradually arranging items in the Archives room, we now have more uniforms on display. Looking after the archives is still very much a learning process for those involved.

* SOME RECOLLECTIONS OF THE PAST 18 YEARS In August 1971, Miss Leigh the then Bursar of Morongo, rang to see whether I would be interested in coming to the school to work in a part-time capacity in administration for 1 month. My month came to an end. however my association did not end there. I was appointed as secretary to Miss Brookshaw who also commenced in 1971 and as there had not previously been a secretary to the Principal I considered it an honour to accept the challenge. During my 18 years here many changes have taken place, not only in the extension of buildings i.e. Jean Sutherland Laboratory. Neilson Library, McCann Sports Centre, Pettitt Music Centres, Laird Centre, Dulcie Brookshaw Senior Centre but many changes to the boarding house. Cubicles became individual study rooms providing much more comfort in a home away from home situation for the girls. My early years saw the abolition of tunics followed by hats and gloves, changes in sports tunic and blazers. Not only has Morongo been a very special part of my life for the past 18 years in my capacity as secretary to Miss Brookshaw and Mrs Watt, 2 of only 4 Principals of the school, but it has held a special place in the lives of my two daughters, Suzanne and Fiona who attended during my time here. My best wishes to the school for the future.

* * Social Service Report In the past, social service at Morongo has played a relatively minor role in comparison to other school activities. However, this year, with the establishment of a student social service committee, this effort has taken on a new, more co-ordinated and significant function.

The main purpose of the committee is to instil in each school member (staff and students) a sincere sense of charity. With this in mind, a new system has been introduced whereby each homegroup is allocated one week to promote and operate individual social service efforts within the school. To provide added incentive, prizes will be awarded for the most successful and original fund raising techniques. This has also proved to be quite a test of students' entrepreneurial skills. Fund raising tactics employed have included selling hair combs, trees, various food stalls and competitions such as school tie tying.

In addition, the school has successfully participated in its usual social service events.

The following indicates approximate amounts raised, how they were raised, and to which organizations funds will be donated.

Many thanks must go to all members of the Social Service Committee, and a particular mention to Susan Petty (who acted as chairperson, term 2). The support and active interest continually offered from Mrs Watt in the social service area is also greatly appreciated.
