Editorial Yet again the year has drawn to a close much faster than anyone thought possible. The seemingly impossible, task of gathering information representative of Morongo's activities has been completed, and here it is jam-packed full of reports, essays, poems and of course photographs. We hope you enjoy it!

When the Luc Committee first met in Term 1 this year, we were all excited at the prospect of putting together the best magazine the school has ever seen. We hope we've succeeded, but only you can be the judge of that.

To make the magazine the best possible, the committee relies heavily on the contributions and cooperation of the whole school community. While many articles were submitted for the Phoenix, the response to the request for photographs was a bit disappointing, but neverthless there are still some interesting "photographs" of school happiness.

If you have failed to find an article of your own or your friends published or if you cannot recognise

any happy smiling faces, why not put pen to paper or getting snapping for next year's Lucernian?

Finding a piece of your own writing or a photo is often what makes the magazine really worthwhile.

Speaking of worthwhile every Lucernian Committee member must be thanked for the role they have played in bringing this magazine together.

Without a group effort such a magazine would not come about. Also Mrs. Klososzczyk must be thanked for her help up until the end of term three when Mrs. Morrison continued to guide us. We also thank her . To anyone else who has contributed in anyway in compiling this magazine go our heartfull thanks - whether it be by submitting artcies or proof reading the end product. This year three new members have been appointed to the Council - Mrs. E. Douglas, Mrs. C. Alexander, Mr. J. Lewis - and already they have made a great contribution with their particular talents.

The first stage of the landscaping plan for the forecourt of the Gertrude Pratt Hall has been completed, and upon the advice of a landscape architect many trees within the grounds that were past their useful life have been replaced.

Planning is continuing in conjuction with the architects for the extensions to the Junior School, the Junior boarding area, and for the building of new science facilities.

This piece of writing heads up a chapter in Natasha Josephowitz' book 'Paths to power - a woman's guide from first job to executive'. On first reading, it may jolt you , but to my mind it illustrates quite plainly and simply the positive and assertive attitude that girls must adopt when choosing a career and planning in their future.

At Morongo, girls are encouraged to have confidence in themselves, to believe that nothing is beyond them simply because they are females and to know that whatever they do, they can achieve excellence.

Because Morongo is an all girls' school, everything that forms part of the curriculum - the academic program, music activities, sport, debating, public speaking, drama - is planned and included especially for girls. All positions of leadership in the school are for girls - from the very junior year levels through to Year 12.

These include the captaincy of the Junior and Senior Schools, the Houses, Music and Sport, membership of the Morongo Student Council, leadership of choirs and instrumental ensembles and the captaincy of sporting teams.

Through the Home Group structure, all girls at some time play a part in organising and participating in assemblies, in social service activities and are encouraged to contribute their ideas and opinions to the organisation of the school through their Student Council representatives.

Some times there is criticism or questioning of the fact that Morongo is an all-girls' school. People who have not heard of the program we offer raise the question - but how will Morongo girls cope when they move out into the community which is made up of males and females? The response is simple - they will cope with ease. The community today is still largely male dominated, although many more females are taking up professions and spending more of their lifetime pursuing a career, they still have to fight for the place they deserve in executive or leadership positions. Girls leave Morongo one step ahead - they have developed self confidence, a positive self image, assertiveness and independence. They will continue to take their place in the community as leaders.

School Captain's Report How do I write a report that signifies my last days at Morongo. Is it possible to put all the emotions and experiences that I associate with the school on paper?

Do I write about the music, the sport, the drama productions, maybe the school work, the House spirit or the friendships? I mention all because, at Morongo they are all important.

There is something oddly comforting about the classrooms, the old wooden staircases, the rolling blackboards, the bookroom, catching late taxis and yes, even homework. It is secure and dependable; there is always hope while you are at school. That is why we must make the most of every opportunity that arises.

A student at Morongo has many opportunities and activities available to her, as she wishes. But, and this must be stressed, she will only reap the rewards if she puts something in. Once she has, she will never regret it. I have often found that those girls who are most dissatisfied and unhappy at school are those who do not participate in school activities. So another year is over. It is with a heavy heart that I say good-bye to the airy, echoing hall in which many long hours were spent rehearsing, to the music rooms, where numerous hours were spent practising, and to the lush, green ovals and gardens that surround Morongo.

A sincere thanks to Mrs. Watt for her support and kindness. To the Prefects and all of Year 12 who have encouraged me. To the whole school, students and staff, past and present, thank-you for making this year particularly memorable. A special thanks to Fiona Salmon who has always been there when I needed her; she has been a fantastic Vice-Captain and friend.

Boarding House Report The sun-darkened faces, wide smiles and friendly shrieks that filled the previously empty corridors were a definite indication that the Mighty Boarders' spirit had not lost its flair over the summer holidays.

Like most other years the Boarders welcomed a large number of new girls and were eager to share the unique experience of boarding house life with each of them. Mrs Barnard also joined us and amongst her other fine attributes we found she was keen to perfect early-morning fire drills which interrupted one of two most highly rated pastimes - sleep, the other being satisfying our never-ending hunger pains!

The boarders have enjoyed many outings throughout the year - the first being the Annual Boarders' Picnic which was held for the second time in Torquay. Music Report Music has always been an integral part of activities at Morongo and this year has certainly been no exception, under the new leadership of Mr. Hancock.

The choirs got off to an unusually busy start with performances at a Rotary Convention church service, at the Geelong Racecourse, an appearance with the touring Texas Boys' Choir , and of course Morongo's own annual church service.

Simultaneously, the school was gearing up for one of our ever popular musicals which this year was The Boyfriend' . This musical was set in a French finishing school in the twenties, was a colourful extravaganza filled with frightfully natty young men (borrowed from Grammar) and perfect young ladies (we had to make do with Morongo girls).

The show was enormously popular with full houses over several nights and praise must of course go to Mrs. Deller, Mr. Hancock and all the many other people who contributed so much.

Second semester had barely started when welaunched into the enjoyable but fatiguing InterHouse Music Competitions. The work that went into each House's perfonnance was enormous, yet as is always the case, it was all worth it in the end. I have personally always loved the Music Drama Competitions, but this year was definitely the most memorable for me with my own House Roslyn, winning for the first time in six years, (May I just add another thank you to all Roslynites - you really made my year !!!) with their rendition of 'Dreams' They were very closely followed by a magnificent performance of 'The Darker Side of Life' by Harris.

Special congratulations to Lynda, Louise and Ruth, the up and coming Bills and Moon writers. Then came Lawson with 'Hollywood', followed by Venters with 'Love and Marriage', Robb 'Travelling' and last, certainly not last, Ardens and their views on Women.

But that's not all musically!

Throughout the year the string, flute and various other ensembles have been diligently practising and have delighted everyone with their excellent performances on such occasions as 'The Autumn Recital' , 'The Winter Concert' and who could forget the string's brief amalgamation with some of the members of the Hampshire Youth Orchestra?

Then there was the visit from the Hong Kong Children's Choir (and that adorable 8 year old violinist) Certainly this year has been exhausting so far and there's still more to come with Speech Night and the much loved Carol Service at St. Davids'.

In third term, we were all terribly proud of Pippy Gardener, our resident star cellist, who went off on a world tour with the Australian Youth Orchestra. As well, and not to be out done, the 'amazing' KerryAnne and Jacinta won those ever sought after arts awards (Yes - those badges with the dangly thing).

But , I really must thank Mr. Hancock for all his hard work in his first year at Morongo, all the many instrumental teachers at Morongo and last, but by no means least, all the girls who are willing to get involved in music and reap the many rewards associated with it.

I've had a great year and I hope you've enjoyed it too (and this report).

Drama Report Girls seem to love dressing up, putting on make up and pretending .... and during the past year many girls have been involved in drama.

The year nine drama class did a very good performance of "The Rude Mechanicals" for their parents. They were incredibly dedicated and they spent many house after school rehearsing.

It was a pretty production. So many girls, parents, staff and friends contributed to its success and a very happy and rewarding time was had by all.

They went to Melbourne to see the M.T.C. production of 'The Popular Mechanicals' and they had a great laugh at the antics of the professionals and at the blushes of their teacher.

Next year we hope to present Noel Coward's 'HAY FEVER.' It has been school policy for years past to alternate a large musical and a straight play - and 1989 is the year tc do a play, which should please all those aspiring young actresses who can't sing.

We have enjoyed some stunning visits to Morongo from companies sent to us through the Victorian Arts Council. Included among these were performances of 'Toes' I Leonardo' 'The Apprentice Time Traveller' and "The Rainbow Warrior". In early December the Junior and Middle schools will see a production of 'Tacking Robots.'

"The Rainbow Warrior" was a magical production, superbly and imaginatively done, and girls from Years 9, 10 and 11 were lucky enough to see it,

It was great having so many young men from the Geelong Grammar School both on stage and off, and we were delighted with the large audiences we were able to attract.

The House Music and Drama Competition provided wealth of fun and unexpected talent and we were lucky t have Mr Dick Johnston, who starred in 'The Boyfrienc as the drama adjudicator. He is great value and gave th girls excellent encouragement and advice.

Most girls, young or old can 'put on an act' when the need to.

At Morongo we encourage them to do so with flair.

Sports Report There is never a dull moment in the sporting life of Morongo and hope that this year has certainly not been an exception.

Throughout the year many girls have been involved in some form of sport whether it be rowing, swimming, netball, baseball, hockey, tennis, fencing or simply attending P.E. classes.

The Inter House Swimming Sports was the first major event on the calendar and Norlane Pool was the place to be. Once again Roslyn's aquatic skills dominated the pool for another successive year , leading the light blue House to victory over Robb, Lawson, Harris, Ardens and Venters. Congratulations to all the individual champions and runners-up and well done to all who swam. Fifty meters is a very long distance to swim, especially if one is unable to float!!!

Morongo's "mean machine" was then selected and captained by Nerida Anderson, all thirty-five girls plunged themselves into training. The first carnival was held at Geelong Grammar and Morongo blitzed Geelong College, Corio North High and Clonard to take third place, while Geelong Grammar and Sacred Heart took first and second place. Senior Baseball "A" TEAM REPORT , 1988.

This year Baseball was a "hit-and-run" situation for the "A" Senior Baseball Team. We played several matches which included a match against Geelong College on the 25th February. The score turned out for the best, being in our favour 8/4.

That same week, we played 4 matches on the 27th February at P.L.C. in Melbourne. We thought getting up at 6.30 was bad enough, but finding out that we had to play in the first round was worse!

We played Toorak, M.C.E.G.G.S. P.L.C., and M.L.C. Considering we were inexperienced and tired we put on a really good show, but we lost wait.... we nearly won every game, but no one match when we gave the great Baseball stars, P.L.C., a good run for their money. With some good overall pitching, catching and throwing, we learnt a lot from the other experienced teams.

Thank you to the hosts - P.L.C. The Juniors played their matches on the 19th March, being ranked 4th. They did a good job.

The best players were Tryphena Bernicke, Sally Robbins, and Wendy McCormack. Well done girls and keep up the practice for next year!

The Intermediate A Team, who played on the 25th March, put in a fantastic effort to be ranked 2nd.

Everyone played an outstanding game with Leonie Creighton, and Rachel Wells showing their potential. The Captain and Vice-Captain, Julia Harris and Danielle Entwistle, also filled their positions adequately with some sensible pieces of play.

Well done to all the participating girls!

The B Team didn't do quite as well ending up 5th, but it's really how hard they tried that counts.

Well done Narelle Lentini (captain), Sheridan Douglas, and Vicki Hedley. All the girls tried hard but the other teams seemed to have a little more organisation on their sides. Maybe next time girls!

While we commiserated on the long trip home, Mrs. Munro and Mrs Inkster told us that our Baseball season had come to an end. Another competition Morongo girls participated in was the Victorian School Girls' Netball Championships, held at Royal Park. Teams 1 and 5 went up to Melbourne to show their style. Both teams won 2 of the 7 games. It was a very eventfull and exciting night.

On the 26th of July at lunch time, all gathered in the school gym to witness the 1988 student teacher netball match. All students cheered and laughed at the surprisingly good teachers. It was only due to the teachers' secret weapon, Mrs. Morrison's toe-pointing, one-handed flick that produced all their goals. The students put up a good fight but lost by only 3 goals.

Finally, special thanks must be forwarded to all the supporters who rallied every Saturday in the bitter winds and frost to cheer on the Morongo teams. hanks also must go to all of the wonderful coaches Mrs. Mays, Mrs. Thornton, Browyn Borrett, Dawn Searle and Sezen Ildiri.

Rowing Report It was obvious that rowing was all the go this season. So there it was, 4 weeks till School. Ardens House Report Term three: Music Comps! Ardens, two weeks before the day of the Music Compertitions, faced castastrophe. The main song had to be replaced, but with the help of Miss Murray, Mrs Smith and Mrs MacKenzie, a new song was adapted from a chant.

Verses were thought up and then practised by the house which was more enthusiastic than ever. The last two weeks of practice and the day of the competition were enjoyed by all. Congratulations everyone!

We came sixth but did our best and had a great deal of fun doing it.

Athletics are as yet to come. I am sure that the spirit and enthusiasm exhibited in other House activities will again prevail.

Throughout the year there have been many activities going on within the house. Bottles, stamps and funds have been eagerly sought.

Ardenites have enthusiastically grappled with Wednesday afternoon sports and inter-house debates.

Results for these events have not yet been finalised. Ardens are in the debating final and doing very well with their stamps.

I have enjoyed the role of Ardens' House Captain immensely. The people with whom I have been in close contact, the appreciation and enthusiasm that they have shown and the general enjoyment which can be had in this position, far exceeded the times when I have felt the increasing pressure of being a year 12 student. Harris House Report Harriot our newest mascot, was given a birthdate the 21st February and people in the school had the chance to guess it. Prue Nadorp was the fortunate one to win that hamper full of goodies!!! (I hope you had fun eating them!) The Cross Country also took place and Harris although coming sixth enjoyed rolling in the mud and crossing the finishline leisurely. (I think!) Well done to Jacqui Anskatis coming third for the juniors and Katrina Penry in coming eleventh in the seniors. On Tuesday morning all the little Harrisites from Junior School made a visit to one of our house assemblies. We played a newspaper game and I believe it was more fun for the Seniors! The climax of the morning for the little ones were the Strawberry Freddo Frogs!

Lawson House Report Special congratulations to all our Robin Hoods who succeeded in gaining first place in the Archery, even though we only ever received a 'Clayton' trophy. First term also brought the Easter Fair, and with it the annual "bottle" competition. Lawson showed everyone how bottle collecting was done, with a grand total of 151 bottles, taking us to another first place.

Second term was relatively quiet by comparison.

The Juniors did, however, show their talents on the netball court, gaining us another first. This time equal with Venters. Towards the end of term came the infamous cross-country, and despite the very muddy conditions, Lawson showed their cross-country ability, gaining first place overall (Yes! another first).

Term three has been very busy so far, with the gruelling four week lead up to the Music and Drama Competitions.

Firstly I would like to express my heart felt sympathies to all readers who are not in Robb House, for I feel you have been severely disadvantaged in the year of 1988! Having got that out of my system, I can now get to business. It has been my pleasure and honour to captain this might House for the last tweleve months and overall I can say that it has been a fantastic year, both for the house and myself.

My first real role as House Captain came in the last term of 1987 when all Robb went to Torquay Grass Ski Centre for our House outing. We soon learnt that "snow ploughing" definitely needs snow and doesn't work so well on grass. In fact, our skis seemed to keep running down the numerous rabbit burrows which were dotted over the slope.

Swimming competitions arrived early in term one and caught most people by surprise - except us.

We had been practising all Christmas holidays for this big event - hadn't we girls? All the hard work and enthusiasm paid off and the purple heads bobbing down the pool did a great job just to make the distance. Fifty meters is a long way to swim if you are as unfit as I! In fact, one word could be used to sum up Robb on this day and that's STYLE . We won our races with style, and sometimes, well we lost them with style! Overall, it was a fantastic effort and MIGHTY ROBB came Page 26.

With the school open day coming up our House began its feverish attempt to collect bottles for the mystery bottle competition. We came equal fourth in this activity, with 88 bottles in all, which was a great achievement. We ended up with eighty more bottles than the previous year, which is a 1000% improvement - an increase to be proud of!

Second term, was inded quite short, but did this lack of time made Robb flounder? No! We put on our running shoes (and gumboots in some cases) and lined up for the cross country. The"purple people" tribe raced valiantly through the paddocks to clock exceptionally fast times. Because of the great effort everyone put in, our House came second overall, which is to be highly commended as running through mud and dodging cattle is not exactly in favourable conditions! We came first in the Senior section with Monika Van Der Wilk being first student over the line, closely followed by Alina Mitton and Sarah Lewis. The Juniors, led by Amelia Matlock who won the event, came in fifth overall.

The Robb House Staff are to be congratulated also as they all competed with Mrs. Thornton and Mrs. McLean coming in either side of Monika Van Der Wilk.

The tuneful (?) voices of the famous Robb House Choir could be heard singing "Chatenooga Choo Choo" for much of term three in preparation for the music comps. Our theme "travel" was well received by the audience on the day as we dazzled them with twenty powerful minutes of drama (I'll have to rest me bunyons - alias Alina Mitton) and singing to come in fifth overall. The highlight of the day came when the music judge called our House song "organised", which is indeed a moment many of us will treasure for the rest of our lives! Thanks must go to Lisa McCann for playing the piano so well, and to the House in general for putting up with the conductor.

This term also saw the House Debates take place and although the Robb Debaters put up a good fight, we were generous enough to let the other Houses win for once. Noble of us, don't you think?

Term three also saw us plant our Robb Bicentennial Tree outside Gertrude Pratt Hall, which will be an on going reminder of our house in the years to come.

Roslyn House Report Along with the other activities, the mighty Roslynites participated in the weekly House sports consisting of table tennis, tennis, baseball and archery. Thanks to Marina Paleologos and Marion Sayers for having done the weekly House sports lists throughoout the year.

No doubt, 2nd term was the shortest of all the terms.

This did not stop the light blue "Road-Runners' from participating in the 1988 Cross Country. We came 4th in the Senior section with great individual performances by Doone Moffatt, Michelle Dowie, Kate Thomas and Rachel Wells. As for the Juniors, Paula Robertson and Penelope Preston ought to be congratulated for their effort, and Roslyn came in 3rd in this section.

After trailing through in the puddles of muddy water with such effort, Roslyn came in with an overall 4th position. Again in Term 2, the determination to participate was observed during Netball and Hockey games for House Sports.

Third term and the House staff were entertained with lunch-time music practices. Roslyn decided to take a break, and our theme was "Dream'. Venters House Report As we were saying good bye we also welcomed a new members in the house, Mrs Metcalf, who filled Mrs Larcombe's position.

So many stamps, Kylee can't keep count. After having a competition between year levels it was clearly seen that Year 11 managed to get the most stamps. But where could Venters be without Steph Field's weekly 50 stamps or more? Great effort Steph!

It is amazing. I had not realised that choosing a theme for the Music and Drama Competitions would be such a difficult task. After changing the theme three times we finally chose "Love and Marriage".

Virginia once again led Venters with talent and expertise, conducting the House Choir in "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and the small group in "Stand

by Me". Anne played superbly as she accompanied the House Choir on the piano. The drama, after a slow start, performed with style as Vicki spent her time searching for a man and Sophie and Carolyn got married. A wonderful effort put in by all.

After exercising our mouths for four straight weeks it was time to start exercising our bodies on the oval.

The year has flown by quickly, giving me little time to sit and think about how marvellous the Venters Almighty Venters ventured into 1988 celebrating our House really is. Not only were the Senior Venterites slaving away, but also the Juniors who came first with Law;on in netball.

There has to be an unhappy time at some stage in the year and for Venters it was saying farewell to Mrs Larcombe who has been with us since Venters was established.

JUNIOR SCHOOL EARTH I was so excited! Tomorrow we were going to Earth! Did I have everything ready? I rechecked my luggage. I had my space-brush, space-paste, a gravity suit and my teddy bear.

I rang Kate, Amy and Rebecca and asked if they were ready.

They said they would be ready in a light year. I called dial-a-comet and told them I needed a comet straight away.

As soon as we boarded the comet we were off. It only took us a billion light years to get to Jupiter where we stopped for a drink. On our way to Earth Rebecca was knocked off by an astroid and we never saw her again.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS REPORT

On Sunday 5th June, seven Morongo girls competed in the annual "Tournament of Minds" held at Monash University in Melbourne.

In the tournment. The girls' task was to create a short play, exploring the concept of heroism with a character from an Australian writer's work.

The Morongo team chose Banjo Patterson's story, "The Drover's Wife". Other characters in the play were Pat Cash, Dame Edna Everage, Questus Pestus and Bob Hawke.

Also in the "Tournament of Minds" the team had to present a spontaneous problem. Our task was to create as many creative uses as we could for a yellow bucket.

The team was very nervous when the judges assembled to announce results. The news was very pleasing.

The Morongo team won a special commendation for creativity and a computer software voucher to the value of fifty dollars!

The team representing Morongo was the only Junior School team from Geelong.

European Tour 1987/1988 25 hours is a long time to spend on an aeroplane and Mr. & Mrs Macvean, Rebecca Walsh, Liz Westman, George Harvey, Alison Wells, Kate Fewster, Menique Morland, Katrina Appleton, Fiona Jackman and Simone Harvey, looked every bit as if they had travelled 25 hours on arrival at Heathrow Airport (29th December 1987). We were unaware at that stage of the fact that the next 30 days of our lives would be spent in the most unforgettable way, touring France and England.

Madam Tussauds was truly amazing. We met Boris Becker, Joan Collins and Crocodile Dundee.

The changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace was very impressive, so too was St. Pauls Cathedreal and the Tower of London. Where we were taken on very interesting guided tours we ended up on top of St. Paul's Cathedral. Being on the Eiffel Tower at night is a spectacular sight as we looked down on one of the most famous cities in the world. We visited the Louvre and British Museum - after all this trip was meant to be educational!

Visiting Notre Dame during mass was an experience we will never forget. One of the many highlights of the trip was visiting Harrods! Many hours were spent in Harrods - trying to find bargins! One of the most impressive parts of Harrods

was the Food Hall from which most of us didn't venture (Well not for a quite awhile anyway!)

Stonehenge, the Arc de Triumph, Sacre Coeur and Buckingham Palace were a few more of the attractions we, as a group, visited.

The trip home really tested the stonger group members, with stops at Dubai, Singapore and Sydney making it more exciting.

On arrival to Tullamarine Airport, we were very hot (as the temperature was 32 degrees C), and very tired ( It was midnight when we arrived), but nonetheless we were very happy to see our families.

Mr. & Mrs. Macvean who "adopted" us for the trip are all to be commended on their fantastic job. Although their job was not easy (nine girls, all wanting to do their "own thing" can be somewhat trying!) They managed to bring us all home in Al condition.

Thanks must go to all who were involved in the 1987/1988 European trip and a special thanks to the Macveans who made our trip unforgettable.

Morongo Student Council The letters M.S.C. have this year found themselves plastered on walls, suggestion boxes and tongues around the school. The mystery of this strange abbreviation was openly solved at an early June assembly when the first Morongo Student Council was announced.

The idea for such a group came about through much discussion in prefects' meetings. Here we stewed about the idea taking advantages and disadvantages into account and finally working out how such a body could work cohesively with the prefects.

With such problems overcome we informed the rest of the school about the notion and received from this a very positive reaction. From here girls in each year level were required to elect representatives and thus the first Morongo Student Council was born.

Each girls was presented with a 'temporary' badge as representative will only serve for one semester in any particular year. This should help to share responsibility and to give more girls the chance to become directly involved.

Meetings are held once every two weeks and are chaired by Virginia Millard whilst Fiona Salmon feverently scribbles down the minutes - that is when she arrives on time! Matters for discussion have certainly been varied and suggestions are never ending. So far we have managed to conquer the problem of "T. Bars" whilst conjuring up ideas for a year 9 and 10 social.

Vandalism, cold changing rooms and possible year 7 and 8 quagmire have created lengthy discussions are presently looking at the possibilty of yearly trips to Australian campsites such as Ayers Rock and Kakadu National Park.

It seems as though the initial goals of creating such a council have been reached. Communication between girls of all year levels has increased dramatically and the suggestion input from girls around the school has been fabulous. With such enthusiasm the Morongo Student Council will no doubt continue successfully into 1988.

The Storm Subsided The long, sturdy bough of the tall gum tre creaked and dipped slightly as the old man eased his weary bones onto the wooden swing that was suspended by two, coarse ropes connected to the bough far above. Gently swinging to and fro, the wizened old man sat pondering in the cool shade of the long, blue green gum leaves.

Deep wrinkles lined his suntanned face, the distinctive tan of a man who has lived in the hot, dry Australian outback for many long years. The deeprooted tan camouflaged the slightly swollen alcoholic's red nose. Thin, taunt lips just covered the even rows of white false teeth that semed too new for the old face. A gnarled, twisted hand with protruding blue veins criss-crossing the surface clung to the rough shipping rope. The slight smell of mothballs and alcohol wafted up through the air to be blown away by the gentle breeze. As the sun warmed the breeze and the old man's bones, he stood up and shuffled away to start another long day sitting outside the pub.

blonde-white hair hung down his face as the mad blue eyes darted everywhere daring something to challenge him. The knuckles turned white as the huge hand gripped the taut rope. Everything was still as time ceased to exist. The air had a smell of terror in it as even the trees weren't game to shiver least they set off the madness. Then he was gone, raging off to find someone who would give him an excuse to let his mad mind explode. The bough seemed to become taller as the weight of the boy was lifted off its swing. Slowly time started again as the park put away into the back of its mind the fear of having a schizophrenic intrude upon it.

Then he was back, erasing from memory the schizophrenic fear - the old man of the morning, unchanged, relaxed and peaceful. The warm beverage filled his veins and his red nose appeared a little redder. The bough of the noble gum tree dipped in recognition as he eased himself onto the swing. The last of the light left the sky as the old man left the park leaving behind the tranquil, warm aura of the gum trees and the wooden swing.

Once more the bough dipped, only this time it seemed to have more life as the young girl colLapsed onto the swing. Her youthful green eyes moved restlessly from tree to tree. Small strands pf blond hair waved gently around her face, accen:uating her tanned skin. One hand with long, slender fingers rested lightly on the rope while the Dther held an oily pair of leather reins and a long, :hin, black whip. As she stood up to remount, her well muscled white horse, the silver spurs on her Tong black boots glistened menacingly in the sunlight. The distinguished smell of the sweaty horse combined with the eucalpt smell, and for a brief moment the air around the swing had the smell of a Horses Farm.

Little clouds of fine brown dust swirled through the air as the small boy dragged his toes through the dust. The swing rose and fell, higher and higher, as the small boy put all his energy into the swing. His eyes sparkled with joy as the wind he made blew his thick black hair strongly back. The small, chubby and grubby cheeks quivered as he threw back his head and let out a whoop of joy.

For a moment the world was young as the sounds of youthfulness filled the air. Then he was off, sailing through the air, landing lightly on his feet to leave behind only a flurry of small bare footprints in the fine, brown dust.

The wind lashes with fury at the velvet-like grass, and a mare and her foals are frolicking among the buttercups which cluster here and there over the grass. A knobbly-kneed colt, frisky and brighteyed dashes at the bushes, charging and retreating as the leaves rustle and whisper.

A golden filly contentedly nibbles at tufts of dandelions, and stays close to her mother, out of the buffeting, billowing wind.

Her mother's soft, velvety muzzle rubs her back, as she proudly watches her offspring play in the sunlight.

The shadows lengthened and the tree quivered with apprehension as an aggressive looking teenaged boy flung himself onto the swing. The lank, K. Booth Yr. 8X

Revenge Looking back, it seems that I was not in control. It was almost as if someone or something else possessed me and I was detached from myself, like an onlooker watching something that is beyond control, not feeling or caring, just watching. I remember how the light shone on the blade, flashing bright against a dark background and how the skin puckered under the piercing edge until it could resist no longer. Then the blood spewed forth upon me, ran over my hands, warm and sticky and red and unstoppable. The crucifixion. The stained sheets oddly resembled Christ's cross, the glazed, unfocused eyes and lifeless limbs strangely similar. A contrast maybe, between the guilty and the innocent. The innocent. Who is innocent? Christ was innocent and yet I have done almost what was done to him.

That final plunge gave me something that no-one would ever take away from me again and his rich, red blood washed from me the guilt and shame that had been my burden. But he was not innocent. I remember it all, every minute detail, his touch, his mouth on mine. He abused me, abused my body, he could not accept me for who I was, for what I was. He always had to force himself on me, made me lower myself to his standards and then he would use me and discard me as if I was a piece of rubbish found in the gutter. He did not care for me, he never would. I was just his toy, something he could play with now and then and, when he was sick of playing, he put me back on his shelf, until next time. I remember the punishment, even now, that he inflicted upon me when I stood up, once, and tried to fight back. The rasp of his knuckles on my cheek and, then, the sting and slap of cane meeting flesh, my flesh, as he flogged me until I could feel no more. The raw skin and scars on my back, my thighs, my very being, telling me that he that he had battered me further, even after unconsciousness had already claimed me. He drove me to it.

He pushed me and bashed me until I didn't care anymore.

I sometimes wonder why he didn't kill me. Of course, I was his tool, something he could manipulate. Yes, I let him manipulate my body but he could never get my mind. My mind was all I owned, my one lifeline with the world outside the one I was forced to call my own. He condemned me, and what gave him the right? He was not God.

The Clown

The young boy pranced about wielding an imaginary spear and stabbing viciously at the air. Sweat beads glistened on his young body as his muscles rippled with each twist and turn. A chink of startling white divided his dark face and he smiled in boyish pleasure. He leaned back with one arm clenched tightly around the spear and sent it into motion. Striking a tree, its warbling could be heard as it slowly ceased vibrating. He was practising.

Practising. Being a man.

He trembled as he lay waiting on the woven matting. He saw the instrument out of the corner of his eye and turned his head away from it. The knife pierced the skin and he clenched his teeth down on his lip, screwing his eyes tightly in pain. The chief drew a long line across his chest with red beads of blood left in its path. A bowl of white ashes was picked up and the chief slowly started rubbing them into the fresh wound. The boy screamed.

The chief stopped and stared with grey, steely eyes. His look of disgust sickened the boy. The searing pain that burned his chest did not compare to the shame that burned within him. He slowly rose and the hunched figure made its way to the door, he turned and knelt with respect, eyes downcast, facing the chief.

He no longer belonged. Men would not look at a coward and the women were silent in fear of their men. He was not a boy yet not a man. He was trapped in a void of shame and confusion. The shame in his father's face had crippled him, and his mother's brimming eyes showed no comfort.

Looking back, the young boy in the forest seemed a long time ago. As he slowly made his way beneath the speckled canopy he saw the spear driven into the tree.

He walked towards it. He reached for it and pulled, gasping as the pain prickled through his wounded chest.

A loud thudding made him spin around to see an approaching beast with ravenous eyes. Blazing. The fresh red trail had made him easy prey.

Steely eyes, the boy in the forest, the glint of the knife, his father, his mother, shame. Sheer determination overcame his fear and pain. With one powerful thrust, he drove his spear into the beast. Grabbing his throbbing chest be backed away from the beast and stumbled over a thick vine. He looked up. -In the shadows of a large tree the chief stood, watching.

T. Curypkos 8 X The Windsurfer In the midst of the deep sapphire blues, and emerald greens, I spot a splash of colour - a windsurfer. Below the sunny, blue sky the tiny splashes of pearl bounce back into the crisp, salty air.

The foaming, broken wave is like a bath, overflowed with soap suds.

The strong winds pick up the windsurfer and then crash him through the monstrous, powerful waves. He's like a free bird, soaring the open sky.

A Most Embarrasing Moment.

A Taxi screeched to a halt in front of the stage door, and thrusting some bills hurriedly at the driver, a thin, rather nondescript young man climed out, clutching to his chess a battered violin case. Running into the concert hall he seemed unaware of his odd appearance; long untamed hair, odd socks and (horrors) old grubby tennis shoes.

As he ran upstairs to the green room a security guard intercepted him, asking for his I.D. Not surprisingly it was nowhere to be found, and when the guard finally lei him through onto the stage, the already livid conductor was almost beside himself with frustration. Now was the orchestra prepared to embrace this untidy latecomer with loving arms, and a few hostile glances three the poor youth into an even greater muddle as he wound up his bow, found his glances (horn rimmed!) and tuned his violin.

The rehearsal, apart from a few minor hiccupps went exceedingly well as this seemingly in competent artist coaxed and heavenly sounds from his instrument. All of a sudden he was in complete control of both his instrument and the conductor. But as the old saying goes "a bad dress rehearsal makes for a good rehearsal" but this. unfortunately, also works in reverse and a few heads were shaking and counteranies were glum in the back desks as the rehearsal came to am end.

Backstage, as the overture began, the artist played slowly through his first cadenza. Perfect. The unruly youth now looked a picture of respectability in his black concert garb and concentration puckered his face as he wens through his psyching process.

He was on. The audience waited expectantly for the young performer to arrange himself until, with an impatient lift of his arm, thety began. Seemingly endless amounts of music surged out of the tiny instrument, and it soared effortlessly above the orchestra with thrills one shakes.

The cadenza began. Perfectly. The audience was so enraptured with the clarity of sound that a dropping pin could have been heard. But it was not a dropping pin that brought the concert to its unexpected end. On the final piercing note of the cadenza, the E string snapped jumping off the violin and landing somewhere in the murky depths of the cello section!

The conductor quickly stopped the orchestra as the disbelieveing performer solemnly checked that the string really was gone. On a note of apology he turned to the audience and bit his lip a lock of hair adding to his starled appearance. But the audience appreciative and knowing, needed no apology, and the started to applaud and chuckle as they realized what had happened. The artist lifted his violin in thanks and acknowlegement, bringing forward the conductor and clapping the somewhat bewildered orchestra (of which part seemed amused and par didn't really seem surprised) As the concert came to its unexpected end, and the artist left the stage, a few knowing nails were were exchanged in the back decks of the orchestra.

Crowds

Questions? '"War"

For thousands of square miles there wasn't a blade of green grass that the sharpest eye could catch. Hot winds skimmed across the land, lifting the dust and hurling it into the burning, stinging, air. The sun's murderous rays came powering down, scorching the droughtstricken land. Although the land was like a living hell, millions of blacks had no choice but to stay.

Why? Why do they happen?

Fathers, husbands, sons all.

Mothers, wives,daughters cry.

The child is left bewildered.

Why? Where? Where do they go?

To lands unbeknown.

Where enemies crawl and roam.

A land of misery.

Where?

Who? Who are they fighting?

Trying to keep their pride.

Whilst it's costing them lives.

Fighting with revenge against peace.

Who? How? How do they start?

Nobody cares if they lose or win.

There is only loss no gaining a thing.

Don't they realise?

How? What? What do they gain?

A deep down despair that won't go away.

A fatality list that would spoil your day.

A dark hole of nothing.

What?

When? When will it stop?

Only bad news does it bring.

A dark grey cloud of morning.

When will they ever learn?

When?

The inhabitants of the land were like a blurry mass of brown-black, crowding under what little shade was obtainable. Their motionless bodies were awaiting certain death as their starving torsos became more and more feeble. Although they sat in a crowd of thousands, each was too weak to communicate with the other. As the day moved on, their shiny, sweaty skin showed signs of weariness and dehydration. It seemed as if only a miracle could save the millions who seemed to just sit in hope.

Their facial expressions seemed to be the subject of a chain reaction; grim and desolate looking, each was a copy of the other. Tiny bonified fingers and limbs, barely recognisable, struggled to keep their identity. Their fragile legs had become so thin, that to walk on them would be cruel. Swollen bellies protruded so that they looked like bloated balloons, and from their sunken faces, pleading eyes begged for something that might resurrect the barren land upon which they lived.

The only sound that could be heard was the painful moaning and crying of the tiny disease ridden children.

Flies which patrolled the rotten air like preying hawks, swat ied around their delicate faces, but they were toc feeble and sick to do anything about it. There was a constant, steady moan throughout the thousands of people.

The children stayed huddled to their mothers. One could not see children gaily playing and annoying parents.

They sat gaunt.

One wonders how long these thousands will survive as they wait in hope for something which may lengthen theil pointless existence. Such a life is one which nobody should have to endure, yet hundreds of millions do.

Crowds and crowds condemned to death, just sit in hope for the miracle which might save them all.

Time The house sat comfortably in the centre of a weed infested garden. Relics of the magnificent flower beds still lived, but only just. At the side of the house a grand oak tree stood high, towering over the house. One could not say how many hundreds of years the beautiful tree had patiently stood, but it was definitely a symbol of time. Massive creepers and vines were slowly making their way up the enormous trunk of the tree, trying desperately to end its existence.

Just beneath the old oak, protected by its guarding boughs, was a small but adequate fountain. Its colour had been smeared by mould and fungi and it was easy to see how long it had been sitting there.

Similarly to the garden, the house had just been left, forgotten. Streams of golden light shone through the splintered windows. Battered window panes were a home for the eerie black spiders that spent their time laboriously spinning webs out of silver threads. Rugged floorboards moaned at the slightest movement. The house was filled with ancient armchairs, their soft, velvet coverings torn and shredded. An old chandelier hung nobly from the decaying ceiling, and the heavy drapes still hung as they had many years ago.

One wonders how much longer the house and its garden will remain standing. Although it will decay more and more as the years go by, its natural air of grandeur will linger on. I guess one day in the near future it will simply give up and crumble away. Being a victim of time is something that cannot be helped.

The old house stood grandly in the centre of the jungle-like garden, Although battered and decayed, its ring of nobleness still hung high around it. It had been a house that signified grandeur in its time, and now stood deserted and cold. b.13EKKCR.

He even raises a slim long fingered hand as if to gesture his point and light glints off a gold ring on his fourth finger. Suddenly he disappears from my view as the train grinds along the track between us, but I can still hear him as I board amid a throng of people. I guess I'll never know what he was saying, which strangely upset me, because what if it was important?

The train is crowded, so I cannot sit down. Watching the people around me, I noticed a dark man with a red bandanna tied around his head. He converses loudly with his grey bearded friend whose expression vaguely resembles that of a pickpocket and I am always on my guard. These two look like prime suspects.

Harry could feel the other vagrant's eyes on him, envious that he had the unforseen chance to talk to a person of such high class.

Again she pulled tightly at the coat, nervously glancing around at the peering eyes.

To my right, a finely toned liquid rested, which would line the shell and its contents. I grabbed an unknown implement, as I swallowed achingly.

Step one, had now been accomplished.

The most difficult part of my mission was now over.

All I had left to do, was complete the job.

I impounded a quadranglar sponge into a semi-caged enclosure with fierce heat being ejected. It would then undergo an intense workout, springing into the atmosphere. Here I arrested the sponge and coated it with a gourmet spread. I then decided to put it into the cave with the shell's contents.

To conclude my errand I looked back to the liquid.

Could it be useful to me, especially when coming into my view was a streaming bubbling pot of water?

Sure enough I found a use for it. I combined the liquid, the bubbling water and a pillow stuffed with scented chips together. I then thought it could be thrown into the cave as well, which I did quite successfully.

The threat to existence had now been overthrown, and the pain had been relieved. My stomach had just enjoyed a filling breakfast of cornflakes, toast and tea, and I was ready to start the day.

School Days As the car pulls up the driveway I begin to think my House and School. The extra work is something about my five years here. For some people to be at which I at times absolutely despise, but, hopefully at any school for five years can be a feat in itself, but to the end of the year it will all seem worthwhile. The be a boarder in one school for five, nearly six years is hardest part will be trying to balance my school something many people say is utter stupidity, and at work, which must take place first priority, and the House work and yet the organisational skills from times I'd have to agree.

The usual question fired at me by people who've nev- learning are inherent in the task. er before experienced boarding life is "What is board- My years at Morongo will always be something I ing really like?" My answer can be quite confusing. will remember. Certainly this year will. I've had the Some aspects of boarding I really like. The friends good times - such as the numerous Boarders' Picnics I've made here will always be very special to me, and - and the bad times - like the many fights which ineI've met just so many different people. The fact that you printed on my mind. have virtually no privacy at all was something which I found very hard to endure, and often still do. To find one's own space, despite there being acres of land around, is quite a task.

When I was in Year 7, beginning a new school, being away from my parents and old school friends and trying to meet new people, was very difficult. It took me a long time to adjust to this new and strange environment; I often think that I am still adjusting, trying to find my particular niche. Forming friendship bonds is the only way that this problem has in any way been solved. I would have maybe remained the shy, reserved eleven year old I was on that first day if the "give and take', the learning to be tolerant and keeping one's emotions controlled had not been achieved.

The friends I've made here are probably the main reasons I've tried to master and conquer the situation.

We've all had our share of arguments and disagreements, but never something we haven't been able to patch up. Living in such close quarters you begin to realise that consideration for others is important, and consideration for their feelings is the only way to gain respect from them. I've learnt I need to give a little if I am to expect anything in return.

It was with very mixed feelings that I started this, my sixth (and hopefully final) year. I wondered where I'd be at the same time in twelve months. I was both pleased and apprehensive to be thinking that soon I'd finally be out of school. So much has happened in the time I've been here, yet it seems as if it was just last week that I was beginning my years here. The reality is that in just under twomonths time I'll be bringing this stage in my life to a close.

Although at times I've been very close to throwing it all away and going to another school, it has now maybe become more worthwhile for me. All the heartaches and almost hatred of the school, which I felt at many times during 1987 has now almost seemed worthwhile for me. To have been announced a School Prefect and House Captain towards the end of 1987, first of all shocked me greatly, and secondly, reinforced the pride I'd had in both Page 62.

Drought

The First I Saw

No rain, the ground is dry.

The plants are all brown and shrivelled.

The ground is cracked and no clouds are to be seen in the sky.

All the animals look desperate for water.

The first time I saw him was three weeks after the accident.

He was dumped in a wheelchair, unaware of what was going on around him (not that much was going on in this dark and dingy smelling room.) He was isolated. The first thing I really noticed about him was the constant trickle of saliva from his mouth.

He appeared to be a vegetable. He was my only brother.

I was frightened of him. I knew not what to say.

Would he understand? Could he hear? I was told he could hear but now I was not sure He looked so ... so... so pathetic! Anyway, what could I have said?

It would have been unfair to talk about his football team. I would cry if I had to talk about the accident and maybe he would too. I was scared that he would suddenly throw a tantrum if I startled him with my voice. I decided to stand there and smile; brother and sister coming together for the first time in three weeks with absolutely nothing to say.

Sadly, I remember, I thought the whole thing was a joke at some hopeful moment of our reunion. My eyes scanned the closed doors waiting and hoping that my real, jovial, active brother would jump out and yell "....fooled! stooged!...," but the minutes (or was it seconds) ticked away loudly and slowly and no one else appeared. All that was before me was this vegetable whom I was supposed to accept as my brother. This 'person' couldn't even help himself from dribbling. His neck could hardly support his head. He was pale and sickly looking with strands of hair plastered to his face. He was unable to better himself in any way. It was becoming obvious to me now that my old brother had truly given way to this new person.

I remember I sat myself down on a nearby chair, but his eyes did not follow me. I sat too upright and uncomfortably and squeaked a little "Hi!" inside me, but it was so soft I barely heard it myself. "Hi !!" I had said again, louder, but there was no response. I stood up and rearranged a vase of red roses nearby.

He moaned at my action just as a person moans when turning in sleep. Was he disapproving of something? Was he in desperate need of something?

I pretended to ignore it but it worried me. When I turned around he was looking directly into my eves.

"Sorry", I said, but I did not know what I was sorry for. Maybe I was sorry for touching the roses.

Maybe I was sorry for myself to have ended up with a brother like this.

As I left the room I had one last look at him. His eyes were elsewhere and another string of saliva fell from his gaping mouth. I thought to myself ,"I wish he would just die and save the pain for all of us."

The water in the tank is going down.

The river is all dried up and the fish are all lying dead up along the bank.

A crow caws - its lonely cry echoes all around.

Droughts are a hard time for farmers.

The droughts are also a hard time for the city.

No fresh vegetables or fruit.

Small vegetable shops have to close down And everything is imported.

But there is a happy ending to this.

The rain, of course, stops the fears.

But in some places the rain does miss And it might not fall for years.

So one day the drought might happen here And all the water will disappear That might happen in Australia.

But it has already happened somewhere else.

A Winter Wonderland Walking through the snow, in a maze of trees, all seems still and calm in this wonderful winterland. Soon it will be all gone as the spring comes and takes over this big, white blanket of soft, soft ice-cream. Already the patchwork of bark is showing, like a brown mouse peeping from under a gigantic white blanket. It won't be long until this calm, quiet scene will be a bustling, busy place for the woodland creatures. Not long at all.

The intrigueing patterns make you stop and stare at their different shades of colour and tone.

A Forest In Winter The picturesque forest was covered in a white blanket of snow. A tiny doe lay dead beside a tree. The harsh winter had been more that it could bear. A lum'inous mist that appeared from nowhere began to engulf the barren and desolate forest. A maze of branches covered the forest roof. Only tiny rays of light were able to penetrate the tangle of branches. As I walked through the snow, snowflakes fell upon my coat. I started to feel part of this majestical place.

I imagined myself as one of the ancient trees that grew here. I imagined my roots digging deeply into the soil, looking for nourishment so as to sustain myself against the winter chills. My branches had been stripped of their leaves by the forceful wind that howled through the forest. The bark that covered me was brittle and cracked; how I dreaded the winter.

My daydreaming, however, was interrupted by a wildcat's howls. A sorrowful type of pity surged through me when I saw its condition, half starved and bleeding. I started my long walk home feeling saddened and depressed. This forest may be beautiful to look at but it was cruel and deadly to its inhabitants.

Freedom There is a cold unfeeling room, a room one of many. They are barren deserts of insanity. People there, are dressed in coarse white. All of them, symbolizing that they are all the same. Though they are thought to be the same - they are all different.

Some sit watching or playing cards to pass the time away. Nothing else seems to happen except for the occasional restless person trying to escape through the strong caged windows or by some other means.

Some dance, sing, jump excitedly or scream horrifically to relieve that eternal energy, that they have stored inside themselves. Others sit in a world of their own, away from pain and destruction. They sit motionless feeling nothing, looking forward to nothing but a smooth, blank, white wall.

Their eyes blue, greeen, brown or grey are the only colours of this desert. They are small and in significant, however one notices them more like an only flower in the snow. Eyes, patient and eager, looking for hope that seems to be around an ever going corner. Eyes, strained, piercing and wide, like a frightened animal scared of shadows. Eyes placid and tranquil, not morning, not resting, almost, maybe normal. Then suddenly widened, evil and struggling, unbearably, until a hundred volts are shot through. Eyes, open, stunned and wide, alive but dead - nothing.

Their hands more only in metamorphosed and disguised fomis. Hands that engender figures of stiff, widened statues, stretched outward and beyond.

Other hands are cadaverous, tortuous, unable to dislodge from the thicket, they are woven into.

They are trapped like small plants amid the thorns growing stronger and tighter. Others like melancholy souls wilt and droop. They hang suspended, lacking energy like dead ducks slung over the shoulder of a proud hunter. They move only to the rhythm of the walker.

An old wrinkled man sits wan-nly rugged up on a plain chair in the corner. He sits and watches the light outside through thick glass and bars. He watches, desperately, gazing like a portrait, unchanged. He looks for something he cannot grasp his past which has gone with his sanity.

Life must continue. People come and people go.

Nothing much happens. Nothing much will.

There is no real escape. No freedom in sick minds and only one way to leave. To leave, is to leave forever.

The maze of trees had a white blanket of icy snow which looked like ice-cream. The ground was barren and there were different patterns on the trees. There was a mysterious mist in the distance behind the trees.

The branches connecting together looked like lacework on a house. The snow looked very icy.

Thoughts and Feelings.

The alarm clock rang lazily; I dragged myself out of the cosy bed and went for a shower. Before the heater was radiating sufficient warmth, the shower was steaming hot. Standing outside, I shivered, A sense of loneliness struck me.

At eight-thirty, I knocked on my neighbour's door. A drowsy voice replied, "Sorry, I am not going out with you. I'd rather sleep in for another hour." My heart sank, we had planned weeks before to go out together.

Since our time table clashed, we two, though good friends, had never gone out together. After I had gone to the trouble of setting a date and place, I had finally come to an arrangement. Now with the silly excuse of wanting to sleep in for another hour, the plan evaporated.

My excitement for the day galloped away. Didn't she know that feeling of being let down, especially, by a "good" friend in a foreign land? Maliciously, I planned revenge - let her down on another occasion. Probably, I would not be able to do that, I was too soft-hearted and desperate for companionship.

I walked out of my room, which was at the end of the corridor to the staff office to get my breakfast, I was amazed to discover the narrowness and length of it. I had not realized that there were so many rooms along the corridor. In my stay at the school so far, I wondered how many things I had missed. I was too insensitive probably because of the noisiness and cruelness of others.

As I walked, a creaky noise followed me. I softened my footsteps, in case I woke someone up. Actually, there was no need to worry because nearly all of them had left after the exams. I questioned myself, would they soften their footsteps if they knew I was alseep? It would be lucky, if I did not hear the elephant walk and the blaring radio.

A patch of reddish orange reflected on the window. I tried to look for the actual blazing sun, but in vain.

However, an unusual sense of peacefulness was experienced.

Back into my room; with two pieces of toast and a cup of milo, I felt homesick. They were what I used to have for breakfast at home. I remembered how I used to stand in front of the bay windows, eating my breakfast while gazing out at the tranquil street. The lukewarmness of the cup of Milo reinforced the reality that I am in Australia.

I went to the front door to wait for the taxi. I saw a glittering surface at the far end of the horizon. I wondered what it was? Eventually, I realized that it was the sea. Two years at the school, and I had not realised that I could view the sea!

As I walked into the station a girl fell in step beside me. I asked "Which platform is the one for Spencer Street?" A kind smile brightened her face. She replied, "Platform one. I am going the Melbourne too."

Though we did not talk much, happiness glowed inside my heart - not all people are mean and selfish. It was only in the small community at school, where there was a small variety of people, where people were so interrelated that the brutality of others was so . obvious.

Just in thought, I was brought back to reality by the hilarious laughing of some Asian girls as they barged into the train. A question entered my mind - how many tears were shed beneath those stiff, pretentious faces?

Reunion of 1955 Sub. G and T. (Year 9)

President - Alison Lawson (Laird) Vice President -Shirley Gordon (Piper) Junior Vice President - Ann Waayers (Jarman) Thirty-three years ago on 5-5-55, a group of students made a pledge to continue their friendship after Secretary - Jeanette Bell (Shrimpton) Asst, Secretary - Vanessa McCracken (Nelson) leaving school. They arranged to meet at the T&G Building on 6-6-66 at 6p.m.

Treasurer - Judy Bent (Wallis) Asst. Treasurer - Jeanette Middleton (Potter) This began a series of very successful reunions, subsequently held on 7-7-77 and 8-8-88 respectively.

Address Recorder - Jill Thom (Hookings) Our special day this year started as guests of the school, when 28 Old Collegians sang the School Song at Morongo Assembly and joined in celebraBranches tions of Multi-Cultural Language Week. This was Canberra followed by a tour of the school, a scrumptious President morning tea and a nostalgic time reminiscing over Camille Chmiel (Tyrer) old photographs and other memorabilia in the new Secretary/Treasurer Archives Room. The highlights of this was being Annabel Weidemann (Russell) able to share it with our former Principal, Miss L. Shaw and members of staff from 1955, including Goulburn Valley Miss Sutherland, Miss Henderson, Miss Steere, President Miss D Butler, Miss D Mitchell and Mrs Anderson Sally White (Dorman) (nee McQualter). Visits were also made to Miss Secretary Botterill and Miss Leigh. Jocelyn Burt, a 1955 girl Sandra Maclntyre (Bufton) and a very successful photographer, presented two Treasurer of her most recently published books to the school Gwen Jensen (Bradshaw) Library . A donation from our year group was made of a Visitors' Book to the Archives Room, and to the Melbourne Rose Garden in memory of our late form mate, Miss President Judith McLennan.

Nola Mason (Miller) The day culminated in a wonderful dinner attended Secretary by 34 Old Collegians who travelled the length and Margaret Chegwidden (Searle) breadth of Queensland, N.S.W. and Victoria to be Treasurer present, and we were all delighted to receive a gift of Sandra Oriander (Stevens) a pottery Coffee mug made by a Melbourne Potter and fellow class mate, Mrs Diana Trewenack (nee South Australia Hirst).

President's Report Another full year has passed quickly for the Old Collegians with many successful events.

On November 27th, 1987, two year group reunions were held, and at both about 120 past students attended and judging from the noise level, all had a wonderful time. The "Pre-war" group had a luncheon and many travelled a long way to see each other. I would like to thank Heather Carby (Stewart) and Margary Rix for organising the day. In the evening the 1960-65 group had a dinner and our thanks go to Shirley Gordon (Piper) and Dorothy Buck (Green) for their part in such a great night.

The following day we held our Annual General Meeting and Reunion Luncheon in the School Dining room and we welcomed Mrs Watt, Miss Brookshaw, school officials (elect) and O.C. representatives from sister schools. We entertained the girls leaving school with a light lunch and explained the function of the Association.

In the new year, a Tennis Day was held at the school.

The committee supplied lunch and cool drinks and my thanks to Anne Waayers (Jarman) for organising the day. We had some of the younger representatives competing at the school athletics and swimming sports.

Lyn Collins(Crellin) organised the Sun Cup Tennis team to compete in Melbourne, Prue Cooke, Tracy Hargreaves, Sally Egan and Lyn. Thanks to those girls and Lyn for attending meetings and arranging the team. The Sun Cup Golf team was Mary Carroll, Helen Drinnan, Joy Hocking, Pam Amezdroz, Jess Beckman and Ann Howarth. I would also like to thank Marj Carroll for her contribution.

Many assisted at the School's Easter Fair, by making and serving fruit salad. A Golf Day for all Independent School Old Collegians was organised by Helen Drinnan in Marj Carroll's absence, on May 29th. Nine different schools were represented and it was a successful day.

In August, the committee organised a Chicken luncheon and Fashion Parade previewing Spring and Summer with Gerda's Fashion of Belmont.

Some seating has been donated by the Goulburn Branch and the other Branches have all made special donations, particularly in memory of Elsie Bishop (Gough) Melbourne and Jean Fish from Goulburn Valley.

Many Old Collegians will be also saddened to hear of the death of Miss Phyllis Evans. She was a much loved and respected teacher at the school for over 30 years and also kept an interest in past students.

We were sorry to acept the resignation of Doreen Weeb (Cronk) but we welcome Margaret Henderson onto the committee. She will be a great asset in obtaining names and information of past students.

Finally, I would like to thank the school, Mrs Watt and staff who helped in our activities and particularly Julie and the dining-room staff for their help with our functions.

Lastly, all the committee have done a wonderful job in supporting me whenever I needed their help, especially my secretary Jeanette Bell (Shrimpton) and Judy Bent, retiring after many years as Treasurer.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my two years as President and wish the incoming Executive all the best for 1989.
