Editorial 1983 Well, here it is, another edition of the'LUCERNIAN', a whole year of Morongo life crammed into under a hundred pages! I've always looked forward to the end of the year when we receive this book of invaluable memories. Everyone sits in the class rooms waiting for her form teacher to call out her name and then there are always screams and fits of hysterical laughter (and embarrassment) as people recognise themselves and their friends amongst the pages. Of course, before you can actually accept your copy, the same question is routinely asked by form teachers... "Do You Have An Older Sister At Morongo??" If you do, then usually you are fated to have to look on at a friend's edition. . . however at one stage I had two elder sisters at Morongo, and we all used to get a copy to stop family feuds. I mean, you just CAN'T share a copy with your sister! All sorts of problems arise; who gets to read it first, whose friends sign their names on it and finally who gets to actually keep it to look back on when they're an old lady, sitting in a rocking chair, while their grand-daughters are happily attending Morongo?

The main objective of the 'LUCERNIAN' is to provide each student with a year full of memories.

Even if you've not the intellectual computer-brain type there are people, events and perhaps even some teachers that one day you will want to look back on. Remember the student-staff sport matches, the school production, your house captain or even how you looked when you were at school?

Morongo is a great school and offers much. I've been her since I was three— from Kindergarten to H.S.C. During that time I've had a lot of fun, a few sad times, and made a lot of friends. Everyone experiences good and bad times wherever they are, but Morongo has definitely provided me with more good than bad. Anyway, If I don't stop now the entire population of Morongo will know my life history backwards. Have fun at school and good luck. To end (finally), I would like to quote a very corny, but worthwhile extract from my sister's school day autograph book. . . "Remember them now, remember them forever, remember those days at Morongo together."

Council Notes This year the Council has continued with the building programme, and completed the extensions to the Music and Drama areas, the enclosing and securing of the locker area, and the further beautification and landscaping around the Laird Centre. The drought and water restrictions provided an added challenge for the members of the ground staff, but thanks to their extra efforts, the gardens, ovals, and trees have survived very well and Morongo returned to its former beauty.

Council has been represented at all Association of Independent Schools, and National Council of Independent Schools meetings and seminars, where the problems arising from the Government decisions have been discussed, and combined actions taken to present the case for continuing Private School funding. Delegates have also attended a National Fund Raising Council seminar to hear of other alternative avenues of fund raising and these and other financial policies are being considered by the Council, with every effort being made to absorb as far as possible, the effects of the withdrawal of financial assistance.

An endowment fund has been established to provide income with which — [a) to award scholarships and bursaries; to provide financial assistance to the parents (b) of pupils and potential pupils in the form of grants or loans; to subsidise specific operating expenses of (c) the school, or such expenses generally.

The capital of the fund may be augmented not only by appropriations by the Council from profits, but also by donations and bequests from supporters of the school, and from the proceeds from the sale, of Council assets.

It was with regret that the Council received the resignation of the Rev Alex Peerman due to his move to Melbourne in January. Alex was appointed to Council in 1973, and had served a term as Vice-Chairman, and Chairman of the Education Committee. The Rev Graham Lehmann, secretary of the Presbytery of Barwon was appointed to fill the vacancy. Also with regret, the resignation of Mr. Alex Hand was received in July. Alex was appointed in 1978, and contributed to the school as a parent for many years before his Council membership. He was Chairman of the Promotion Committee, and as the results have shown, gave excellent service.

Council members together with members of staff and parents, have anxiously been awaiting both the Federal and State Government decisions concerning financial aid to Private Schools. As now it has been announced that Morongo is one of the top forty one schools in Australia, parents will suffer from the withdrawal of assistance and will now have received communication from the school stating the position and the actions that have been taken. During the year a survey was sent to all parents, to ascertain the financial efforts that they were making to send their daughters to Morongo, and the result has shown that two thirds of all parents are both working for this reason.

Principal's Page Advances in technology have had a great impact on society and hence on education,so the school's programme must adapt to the needs of this technological society. Over the past decade the content of the curriculum has provided opportunities for a person to develop not only academic skills, but creative, cultural and social skills.

The acquisition of knowledge is one aspect of school learning but how that knowledge is used in adapting to change and in making decisions in life is now a vital concern of education.

Professor D.R. Stranks, Vice Chancellor of the University of Adelaide, states in a paper on 'Education and Technological Change in the Eighties' 'The most essential thing which education should provide with regard to rapidly changing society is the basis for understanding change, a willingness to understand future change and a confidence in being able to direct it— to actively participate in the process — and not merely be subject to it' Morongo has endeavoured to keep pace with change and to provide a programme which will enable girls to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations and to develop confidence and the ability to make wise decisions so that they are ready to adjust to the rapid changes in society— whether in a working or non working situation.

Recent changes in the curriculum include the introduction of the unit system at Year 11, and alternative H.S.C. course, (Career Orientation Course), Work Experience programmes and Computer Studies. These have widened the choice of learning experiences for students and enable them to study courses, especially at Year12, more directed to their needs.

The Career Orientation Course is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Secondary Education (V.I.S.E.) and as such may lead students into some form of post-secondary education study such as the Advanced Colleges of Education, like the traditional group one subjects, or into the work force. The Career Orientation Course is quite demanding, not only in its content, but in its form of assessment,as continual assessment is carried out throughout the year and final results are based on this. As well as areas of academic study, the content of the course provides for the development of practical and social skills, and these also help students to become more resourceful and confident and thus be more prepared to face the next stage in their life.

The world is ever changing, so that schools face many challenges ahead to ensure that the education offered is meaningful, relevant and appropriate to the needs of society now and in the future.

Junior secondary level. At first she was a resident teacher, helping to supervise the boarders, and at her retirement dinner she reminisced on her years as a resident member of staff and as a teacher. (These reminiscences were enlightening to all present, including Miss Shaw).

She was a teacher of the 'old brigade' — a disciplinarian— yet a friend and helper to all she taught.

She encouraged and upheld the tradition of scholarship, academic achievement and good behaviour. Hundreds of Morongo pupils have passed through her hands and she was loved and respected by all.

Roma Steere Earlier this year we were sorry to lose the services of a dedicated and loyal teacher, Miss Roma Steere, who retired after 281/2 years teaching at Morongo. She was appointed by Miss Shaw in 1955 to teach in the Junior School and then went on to teach English, History and Geography at 6

In 1980 the Morongo Old Collegians awarded her Honorary Life Membership of the Association in recognition of the service she had given. Morongo was a large part of Roma Steere's life and the school has been enriched by her long and faithful service. As honorary member of the Old Collegians Association, her strong link with the school will remain, so Morongo will continue to be part of her life.

All members of the Morongo family wish her happiness and enjoyment in the years ahead.

School Captain's Report happen,didn't; times when you failed and success meant all to you, times when others have offered their warm shoulder for your tears, and helped and given guidance and sheltered you from fears, times when you just sat and talked and listened to someone's troubles, times when you remember someone smiling back at you.

I wouldn't exchange these moments for anything, nor would I replace the sad times with happy times. They are all part of growing with-in ourselves. The happiness and the sadness are fuel for the lamp that will help illuminate the future and I wouldn't part with any memory I have of Morongo, whether it's good or bad.

As far as my eyes can see, There are shadows surrounding me.

None of us know what the shadowy future holds for us, but we can look back on our illuminated past with pride and joy and remember the things that have added something to our lives. Every girl at MORONGO has had the opportunity to add some fuel to a lamp that will shed light into the dark avenues of the future and, paths they have never seen before.

The opportunities have been numerous throughout 1983. When you remember the competitions for our arms and legs, the competitions in song and dance, excursions and dances, performances and camps, the Fete or country fair and all the activities at school, we begin to start to wonder whether work is done at all. And the list of 1983 highlights could go on and on for ever and the opportunities increase in number.

Personally, I find that I get the most joy out of thinking of the quieter moments and it is these that I will treasure deep within my mind. Memories of the times when you saw a dozen or more, happy, smiling faces, and that wonderful feeling of knowing that people need you just as much as you need them; times when you experience that glorious feeling of ecstacy at shooting a goal that really. matterd, being the first to break the tape, taking a bow on stage before public, passing a test that you thought you had failed, the cheering and shouting and scoring tenfold, times when you feel happy and times when you feel bold, times when the staff do something that makes you giggle and laugh like mad, times when you sat alone and cried because something you wanted, deep in your heart, to

Whenever I look at Morongo's crest, I think of that lantern and of how much of Morongo it symbolizes.

The warmth that exudes from the girls, and the insight and enlightenment you can gain from talking and listening to the staff. Even now as I write this report I grope and try to grasp for a word that aptly describes the warmth that exists between the students and the staff. That feeling of togetherness is unique and I fervently hope that it never changes or ever gets lost, or forgotten, in this ever changing world.

My time at Morongo has been a rewarding, fulfilling and enriching experience both educationally and personally. My lamp has been trimmed with kindness and honesty, kindled with good friendship and love, filled with the sweet oil of wisdom and it's ready now to light future paths. I humbly thank Miss Brookshaw for all her help and guidance over the years, and I also thank Mr. O'Neil for his strength and hope. I must also thank the staff and prefects for all their friendship and support, not only in this year just passed, but in the others already gone.

To all the girls at Morongo, as you read these pages through, remember all the good times but think of the quiet moments too. Fill your lamps with pure oil while you have the opportunity to do so and let them shine for all the world to see. "Noone lights a lamp and then hides it under a bushel but puts it on a stand for all to see." So "try a little kindness, show a little kindness, just shine your light for everyone to see." Be very proud of living and don't give in to just any old thing but take heart and smile your life away. I thank you all for any little thing you have done for me, not only this year, but through all the days of my life on the hill. I only have one more thing to ask of you, and that is, that you promise to keep brightly burning Morongo's lantern of fellowship, love and learning.

Boarding House Report After twenty-three bells a day, five days a week, almost continuously, it's not surprising that many boarders seem to have developed an acute case of deafness. This can be the only explanation for the fact that they are often seen running to breakfast half dressed and less than half awake.

All those lucky day-bugs who have experienced boarding house life first-hand can testify to the Boarders' endless enthusiasm, even towards such things as fire alarms, which drag us out of bed into the bitter cold.

To old boarders the traditional Boarders' picnic was something to look forward to but the more recently initiated members of the boarding house experienced Queenscliff's amazing surf, eyecatching beaches and exquisite boarders' lunch with some trepidation. However, the compelling activities of this day and all the following, soon had even the most hesitant girls eagerly involved.

Inter-house tennis, baseball, basketball, netball, hockey, badminton and tabletennis all contributed to using up some of the Boarders' boundless energy; so much so that some have even been caught catching up on sleep while in lessons. The entire boarding house was entertained by a selection of films supervised by each Boarding HouseHouse, and the young 'uns had the added excitement of the annual beetle night and the (not-somysterious-but-heaps-of-fun) Mystery Bus Tour.

greater, I've had the honour to be just one of the "Mighty Boarders"; the best bunch of friends one could ever wish for.

I owe much thanks to Miss Brookshaw for her invaluable help and friendship, together with endless patience and guidance. I must extend a huge thank you to all the Boarding House Staff, especially Mrs. J. who really has encouraged me right throughout the year. The Sisters, Mrs. Lewis, together with all kitchen staff, have always been so willing to help. The workmen led by lovable Stan, are without fail, on hand to tie up what we have a habit of undoing.

If I could fly to the moon in order to show my appreciation for the Boarding house captains, I would. They've been four terrific friends who have always been there to strengthen and guide me in the right direction.

It hardly seems three years since I was first lugging my gear out to the car, bidding farewell to my first home. Now I must leap from another round-about, my second home, in order to prepare for my third. Boarding memories, and especially friends, will stay very near to my heart forever. I wish I could say a personal farewell to everyone but I guess I just have to settle for one huge goodbye, sprinkled with lots of love, forever.

The fact that logie award winning actors are not abundant within the ranks of the boarders did not deter us. Both the Easter celebrations (which included the premier performance of Egg White and the 29 Easter Bunnies) and the Inter-house Drama Festival were enjoyed by all. The rural influence was strong the first week back from the September holidays, when we all 'had ourselves a ball' at the Boarders' Dance, which went bush.

All these events helped add spice to life in the Boarding House. It isn't that we haven't had many a laugh out of everyday things such as changing (or forgetting to change) our sheets, collecting eagerly awaited letters and our numerous, usually fruitless, attempts at dieting. The aquisition of a Boarders' sewing machine and some girls' subsequent attempts to use it (?), also provided a source of humour.

Think what you may but, moving rooms does not tend to reduce the amount of junk accumulated throughout the year. Therefore packing up our teddy bears, plants and heaps of hoarded possessions at the end of the year, is not only sad when it is our last time, but an almost impossible task.

I have had a tremendous privilege and honour in being able to Head the Boarding House but, for 8

Boarding House House Captains' Report Well, it hardly seems like a year since the beginning of first term, when Neilson, David, Hearne and McPhee met on the tennis courts to contend their own version of the Davis Cup. All competition melted against the show put up by McPhee, which of course must be basically attributed to the 'Wimbledon' style shown by their guest player, Miss Brookshaw, on that hot day.

In no time at all, we met again for the inter-house baseball. It was David house who excelled on the diamond this time and they were back in form for the table-tennis when they came out on top yet again. The 'Harlem Globetrotting' experience of many McPheeites stood them in good stead when they took away the basketball competition in retaliation.

Contrary to popular belief, however, Hearne and Neilson have not been inactive. All four houses have presented films such as 'On Golden Pond', 'Elephant Man', 'Love Story' and 'The Getting of Wisdom', not to mention the ever enchanting 'Railway Children.'

The houses all went one step further and produced our own theatrical wonders in their talented renditions of such all time classics as 'Sno Bright and the Seven Waffles', 'The Crimson Stain', 'Monte Python' etc.

None of these activities could have been possible without the ever present assistance of the boarding house staff and kitchen staff, to whom we extend our special thanks. Thanks must also go to Miss Brookshaw for her increasing interest and support throughout the year.

And finally, to all the boarders for their enthusiasm and fantastic spirit, we wish you all the best for next year and hope it will be as successful as this one has been for us.

To begin at the end— Term 3 came, and no sooner were we wearing school uniform after the holidays than we were back into casuals. Casual Day was 23rd September, and to add a little extra fun to the day, hats and gloves were worn. We saw Miss Brookshaw in a bright purple hat, desperate boarders in paper hats, Tanny wore an umbrella, and Sass a garbage tin lid. Gloves, both short and long, were worn.

We as members of the A.V. Committee would modestly like to inform everyone of the importance of our extraordinary, exciting, wonderful and challenging duties.

Altogether it was a good day, and great to see both Junior and Senior schools give their support to Social Service.

The money raised was sent to "ORANA", a Uniting Church home for children. Other money raised throughout the year, has been sent to different organisations, including Jirrahlinga, where it was to be spent on the animals who were victims of the Ash Wednesday bush fires.

Each form carried out some sort of fund raising in 1983. Year 12 held a "Morongo Cup" race meeting, Year 10 a luncheon, and the list goes on, with numerous Fetes selling toffees, hot chips, chinese food and fruit salad.

The ever-popular inter-house stamp collection was once again won by Venters, who raised over 83,000 stamps — a fine effort Overall, this years collection showed an increase of 95,000 stamps on last years total.

I wish to thank Mrs. Macvean for her organisation and help to me throughout 1983, and all those who make social service at Morongo an important aspect of the school.

Each of the four thousand cassettes that flow in per day are welcomed with smiling faces and open arms.

This is not all that our duties entail. In the boardinghouse we were active in the showing of tearjerking video-films to the appreciative boarders, who displayed their gratitude with hurried exit and a scattering of toffee papers.

We modestly must admit we were the bright sparks of the musical production 'Sound of Music' although never actually seen on stage.

Computer The year started with a pleasant surprise; well, it wasn't really a surprise, we knew that they were coming. For when we arrived at school we were greeted by six new computers, bringing the school's total to ten. The computer room had also been moved from behind the Junior Library to Room 16 to accommodate this increase in numbers, not only of computers but of girls studying the subject also.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the girls from Junior School have been learning a new language called LOGO, concentrating mainly on Turtle Graphics.

They are enjoying themselves immensely.

With the addition of the new computers it became necessary to aquire new printers also. The first new printer, an Epson MX-100, is capable of printing graphics and prints more quickly and quietly than the old one.

The Country Fair arrived and we decided to open the new computer room to the public for demonstrations, along with the chance to play the wellloved computer games. The day was a great success, allowing both girls and their parents to show their expertise.

Second term arrived with the addition of two more printers and the coming of Morongo's first Computer Club. Twelve girls from years 7 and 8 now attend regularly every Thursday after school, when the club meets. The idea of the club is to teach the girls in the lower years — that is, those who are interested — simple BASIC programming before they meet it in year 10. It has been a great success. All girls are learning quickly and have already progressed into graphics.

When Open Day arrives in term three, the computer room will be open to the public once more to offer its keyboards to all those computer lovers.

I would like to thank Mrs. Thom, Mr. Marks and Mrs. Mackenzie for being there when their help was needed. The School Council and the Parents and Friends Association also deserve thanks for supplying the additional computers and equipment.

For without them, none of this would have been possible. Thanks must also go to the other members of this year's Computer Committee — Fiona Heggie, Sam Carter, Robyn Thompson and Susan Pettitt — who have assisted me during this year.

Oh, and one more thing — Remember; if you're going to go nuts...go COMPUTER NUTS!!

Library The Library Committee has been very busy helping Mrs. Davidson keep the books in the library in order. In our lunchtimes, we have been putting just some of those 13,000 books in the library back on their shelves.

Each member of the Committee spends one lunchtime a week in the library, stamping books, replacing those that have been borrowed, back on the shelves, sorting out the magazines and keeping the books on the shelves in their proper order— it is amazing how quickly they become mixed up after an enthusiastic class has descended upon them! We also assist those who cannot work the photocopier.

During the year, there have been quite few donations made to the library. Gillian Carr and Samantha Knox, won a set of Encyclopaedias and dictionaries for the school library. The South Australian Branch of the Old Collegians gave a donation of money, with which three valuable books on South Australia were purchased. Miss Steere also gave a donation of money to the school to use to buy history books for the McPhee library.

Already several have been bought Mr VickersWillis donated the book "The Impressionists" which all art lovers appreciated. We would like to thank these people for their generous donations, as all those who use the library will find the new books very useful.

My thanks must go to Mrs Davidson and Miss Galbraith for their support and guidance through this year. and also to the library committee for being so helpful.

Music Report Where is music?

In the rustle of long grass, And the murmurs of the trees, In the trickle of a stream, Or the thunder of a waterfall.

In the song of chirpy birds, And the calls of creatures wild and tame.

In the hum of insects under earth, Or the cries of children at their play.

There is music in our cities, too, In the blending of our voices, And the hum of moving vehicles, Or in the chimes that mark the passing hour.

There is music everywhere, Above, around, below, For all who want to hear it, And do its beauty.

One very striking feature of Morongo is its music.

The people here know the beauty of music, and are proud to pass their knowledge on to those who want to learn. This was demonstrated particularly in this year's production of 'The Sound Of Music.'

Fiona Ramsay as Maria, Mr. Marks as Captain Von Trapp and Louise Aitken, Kathy Champness, Meredith Millard, Kate Royal, Virginia Millard, Sarah Vickers-Willis and Heather Clarke as the seven children all acted and sang superbly. Under the guidance of Mrs. Martin the senior choir delighted the audiences with their singing of "Dixit Dominus", "Rex Admirabilis", "Confeterini" and "Climb Every Mountain", as did the fourteen onstage nuns, hiding in their long back habits.

('Insects'). This was the second year that a drama section was included to allow fora demonstration of all the arts instead of simply music, and it was interesting to see how the use of this new flexibility has been developed. Instead of having three separate sections, as in former years, the houses tended to use their drama to connect the different sections, thus intensifying the atmosphere of their theme. The adjudicators, Mr. Johnson of Geelong Grammar and Dr. Danrell of Geelong College, were very pleased with the results of our hard work.

Morongo has entertained many people with its music, but we have also been entertained by others. Danny Spooner delighted us with his ballads and we enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with Suzanne Steele in Term 1.

In conclusion, I would like to thank all the teachers of music in Morongo for their excellent guidance and instruction of students who are truly learning to appreciate music.

Mrs. Martin's ability to convey to the choirs a real feeling for the music had been evident not only in this production, but in performances throughout the year, such as at the annual Easter service, the Barwon Civic Centre, the Lara Pleasant Sunday Afternoon and the Morongo Country Fair.

Mrs. Galloway, in her training of the school orchestra, has also given many students an opportunity to learn about performance and appreciation of music.

Lunch time concerts and performances at assemblies during the year have allowed not only the choirs and orchestra an opportunity to show the school the products of their hard work, but also allowed pianists, singers, flautists, violinists and cellists to display their talent Music competitions with all their laughs and tears are over once again, and again the standard was pleasingly high. Harris was placed first, their theme "Australiana", Venters second ('The Fair'), Lawson third [Nursery Rhymes'), Ardens fourth (`The Twenties to the Sixties') and Roslyn fifth 14

Drama Report "A hush fell over the audience as the lights faded and the orchestra began to play. A sweet voice from the centre of the stage filtered into the light, filling the night with "The Sound of Music."

We were also honoured to have Mr. Danny Spooner entertain and teach us with his beautiful traditional songs. Not to mention the two extremely talented comperes — Gabi Sorge and me!!!

No, it wasn't Julie Andrews at Her Majesty's but our very own Fiona Ramsay at the Gertrude Pratt HalL She was joined with choirs of virtuous nuns and the rather gay society of Austria Special Guests such as Mr. Marks, Mr. O'Neill, Mr. Barker and Stan Cepelak graced the 'lavish' sets as well as other 'outside' male artists. A lot of time and preparation went into making the musical the success it was, and thanks goes to all those involved, especially Mrs. Deller and Mrs. Martin.

A special thanks goes to Mrs. Mitchell, Miss Maniaci, Mrs. Mocellin, Frau Fileborn and Mrs. Quickmire for organizing a magical night of drama and language.

During 1st term at Morongo, students were also subjected to the infectious giggling of "The Laughing Clowns". This is a lunch time drama group which started off with a great enthusiasm but by the end of the term only those who enjoyed a good laugh attended the rather abstract workshops.

2nd term was so busy that Laughing Clowns had to stop laughing to give way to the annual Music/Drama Competitions. It was obvious that all houses had been rehearsing hard as the standard this year was extremely high. Congratulations to Harris and Venters for winning the Drama Section, and to the other houses for their excellent entertainment.

For all of us that enjoy a touch of culture, Morongo held its second Multicultural evening. Skits and songs were performed by our talented Language students as well as Spanish and Italian dances by outside groups.

Students have also been involved with Drama outside of Morongo. Fiona Ramsay and I were fortunate to spend a week at the Drama Resource Centre in Melbourne where we were introduced to the 'real' world of acting. Sherene Viol and Sandra Herbert went to The Geelong Mill Theatre, where they spent a week participating and experiencing how a theatre group runs. We also have a teacher who is extending his talents into the outside world. Mr. Marks, our Captain Von Trapp, is keeping his rank as Captain in G. S.O.D.A.'s 'South Pacific'. We hope he 'breaks a leg'!!!

Drama is a unique form of expression, an Art, which thankfully at Morongo is being nurtured so it can bring big and better things. The Hall is at this very moment being altered to include an improved wardrobe and acting space.

Special thanks must go to Mrs. Deller for all the hard work and encouragement she puts into Drama at Morongo. Remember: All the world's a stage, and all the men are players.

Sports Report Take your blocks, set, splash! That was the first sound heard in the sporting life of Morongo in '83, as the swimming sports took place in the third week back at school. Ardens proved to be the best house of fish on the day, closely followed by Harris, Roslyn, Lawson and Venters.

The swimming team was then chosen and dived into action practising once a week. They competed in several competitions, performing extremely well in all.

In the third week we swung back into action with baseball and tennis practices and social matches, which were played against GGS, Geelong College, SHC and Clonard in order to reach our top forms for the tough competition of the round robins in which all teams participated extremely well.

While we were all swinging and swimming our three rowing crews weren't catching crabs, but training very hard on the Barwon under the expertise of Miss Kratochvil (Mrs Vickery), Mr. Marks and Mr. Brussel. They competed in a number of regattas including the "famous" Head of the River in which they were very successful.

It was then a quick sprint down to the Corio Athletics track where this years athletics were to be held. Venters created history as they won the sports for the very first time, but Lawson, Harris, Ardens and Roslyn followed closely behind.

First term was then over and second term was to commence with 8 netball teams and 5 of hockey.

Saturday night was a time for resting, as many girls were battered, bruised and exhausted from playing either netball or hockey during the morning or afternoon. But the bruises were worth it as 6 of our netball teams and 3 hockey made it to the finals.

The highlight of second term were the round robins in which even if the teams weren't too successful, everyone still had a great time.

Spiking, digging and setting was being mastered as our 2 volleyball teams were in action at SHC, giving the opposition a taste of losing.

Also, 3 bouncing bundles of boarders dribbled to the gym every Wednesday night to exhibit their basketball skills. Morongo Gold proved to be the most successful team as they were on the top of the ladder for most of the season.

I can't conclude this report without jolting the memories of the staff, reminding them of the STUDENT/STAFF clashes in which the STUDENTS proved who is superior on the sports field. We not only annihilated but humiliated them also, as we defeated them by such large margins.

On concluding this report, I must thank Miss Brookshaw, Miss Boyd, Miss Kent, coaches, house captains, sports committee and, last but not least, all of you who took part in the sporting life of Morongo this year. Without all of your help and support I would have found this job impossible, but because you have all been great I've had a fantastic year. Keep up the sporting reputation of Morongo by continuing to take part, not only to win, but to also enjoy yourself. Don't forget Icky is always there cheering everyone on in his own way.

I'll miss you all, keep up the fantastic swimming, diving, running, jumping, throwing, batting, serving, and hitting.

Ardens House Report

The house captain stood quivering in her school shoes in front of approximately ninety girls and several house staff. All eyes were upon her. One could see the beads of perspiration on her brow and the intense concentration on her face. What was she going to say?

Ardens, once again, proved to be a house to be reckoned with. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all girls and staff members who have helped me unfailingly throughout the year. You all contributed in making this final year one that I will remember well into the future.

So began the year for Ardens House members and, I'm pleased to report that, amazingly, all survived that first assembly.

The best of luck and happiness to all in the years to come.

It was in this assembly that the preparations for the Annual Inter House Swimming Competitions got underway, which, as everyone will recall ended in victory for us. Congratulations must go to our champions, Georgie Richardson and Fiona Fothergill, and runners up, Natasha Keats, Nicole Trethowan and Robyn gason.

(It was at the swimming sports that the House realized just how emotional their house captain was) Out of the water and onto the track, the Athletics were looming in the distance. After several weeks of trials, on a not so green oval, all competitors, officials, staff members and supporters were taken to the Corio Athletics Track for the event.

Ardens gained fourth placing, which was a very pleasing effort. Congratulations to our two champions, Tracy Chapman and Andrea Smith (modesty prevents me from mentioning the runner up) and to Venters, who deserved their well-earned victory.

It was about this time that we "farewelled" two of our house staff. Miss Kratochvil left us at the completion of first term to be married and, shortly after, Miss Steere left the house after 25 years of dedicated service. It was indeed, very sad to see her go, but I had the pleasure of being involved in her final assembly which proved to be both unusual and very moving. I wish Miss Steere and Mrs Vickery all the best for the future.

Losing two house members in one year can make a house captain somewhat paranoid. What was I doing wrong? However, there was no time for such nonsense as we welcomed Mrs Spooner and commenced rehearsals for the Music Competition.

Ardens came a very pleasing fourth and all girls are to be commended for the high standard of the competition. Congratulations must go to Ardens and of course Harris, the winning house.

Harris House Report The Swimming sports were our first challenge this year. The exciting day ended with a great 2nd place.

The bottle collection for the Country Fair provided much competition and Harris came through with another encouraging 2nd place.

We decided to liven up our already energetic cheersquad with the innovation of the Harris Porn-Porn girls. The house learn't five new songs which were accompanied by the year 12 girls doing porn-porn routines.

The day of the Athletics proved to be a most colourful spectacular turnout. The year 12 girls proudly wore their Harris-design Horatio T-shirts and red skirts. The pom-poms flew to the sounds of "East to West", "Victory", "Julius Caesar", "Get Up" and "Spirit". This great encouragement from the house led to a fantastic 3rd place and a most amusing fun day.

After the May holidays, Harris collected piles of stamps and gained 4th place in the stamp competition. Harris then performed in excellent style to the theme "Australiana" to deservedly take a fantastic first place in the Music and Drama Festival. (Maybe the cheers really did help!) Harris should keep up this winning streak for the interhouse sport, cross-country, and maybe even the end of year!

I'd like to thank all the staff and girls for all the great support and help. I feel very proud to be responsible for the most colourful and spirited house in the school.

Lawson House Report Once upon a time, there were five kingdoms in a faraway land. Each had a special colour, and was destined to perform great feats throughout the year. However, the best kingdom was one called Lawson. Its inhabitants flew a green flag, had a court-jester called Oscar, and they lived in a castle called the Junior Common Room.

The first labour which had to be performed was the swimming of a crocodile-infested river, otherwise known as the Norlane Pool. The people from Lawson tackled this well, and managed a good fourth place. Those specially skilful at eluding the crocodiles were Chris Schaller, Sarah Callan and Lisa Stevenson, and the sub-juniors, who received a silver cup.

binding all those who lived there together. The magic words were "To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield," and this was observed by everyone.

Needless to say, they all lived happily ever after, and should continue to do so in 1984.

The next feat which was attempted was showing their talents in a tournament called the Athletic Sports. Lawsonites threw, ran, walked and jumped their way to a close second place. Fiona Robertson, Ruth Barber, Vanessa Calvert and Amanda Earle were singled out for special favour.

Among other marvellous achievements, the kingdom of Lawson showed that it was good at collecting items. They managed to surpass all the other kingdoms, by amassing 152 mystery bottles (unfortunately none contained a genie) and were third in the stamp competitions with 52,078.

(Special Lawsonites in this field were Julie Hodge and Lynne Stanley, who proved that they could count past ten.)

There also came a time when all the wandering minstrels had a chance to strike up a tune in the Music Competitions. The kingdom of Lawson chose the land of Nursery Rhymes as their theme. The massed choir of all residents and a smaller group of balladists both gained first place, and the Lawson players came a close fifth, to earn the entire Kingdom a tuneful third place. Sarah Hodgkinson, Kathy Champness, Fiona Myers, Claire Noonan and Judy Waugh all helped to wave the magic wand, and transform the croaky voices of green frogs into those of princesses.

All inhabitants were kept fit, and in condition ready for other fabulous feats, by taking part in activities such as Tennis, Baseball, Netball, Hockey, Tabletennis and Volleyball on Wednesday afternoons. Results in these labours were mixed.

Although it didn't always win, the Kingdom of Lawson had a successful year in 1983, aided by the endless enthusiasm of all residents, especially Year 12 and staff. But above all, the thing which made this Kingdom special, was a fantastic spell

Roslyn House Report Roslyn plunged into 1983 with a big splash into the Norlane Pool. Our spirit was far from dampened as we chanted and cheered our swimmers on to a close third place. We swam like pale blue sharks— churning up the water and carrying off the Junior Cup. Congratulations to Cathy McLeod, Nerida Anderson and Sally Bothroyd on their outstanding performances. Shortly after, we shed our bathers and donned our spikes, our home made house hats and masks and prepared to burn off every ounce of available energy for the Athletics.

Thanks to the Roslyn boarders we brightened the occasion by having 'Roslyn' painted on six boxes.

Our cheer squad spurred the athletes on to gain 5th place. Congratulations to Sammy Lawler and Nerida Anderson for their great effort. In between learning our seven house songs and war cries we all busily looked around for things to bottle.

I think some people would try to bottle anything— it was great involvement by the whole house in collecting 71 bottles, coming in 3rd place in the mystery bottle competition. Thanks to Irene Garner, our mystery bottle collector, for her enthusiasm.

The stamp competition was a success; we collected 29,595 stamps. Thank you to everyone who vigorously tore off stamps from every envelope in sight. Special thanks to Alison Nankivell, our official house counter, for her enthusiasm in counting stamps.

At Wednesday afternoon sport it was pleasing to see correct uniform, punctuality, good sportsmanship and enthusiasm shown by most of the Roslynites. The improvement shown by our Juniors in Netball, Volleyball, Tabletennis and Hockey augers well for the future.

The Music competition brought with it sore throats, headaches, loss of lunchtimes and "insects", our theme. We gained 5th place and I believe we had a ball, "butterfly ball". Thank you to all the girls for their enthusiastic involvement, to Catherine Wells, and the 6th formers for their help and organization.

Early in the year we welcomed a new addition to Roslyn — Ossie Osmu was "hatched" out by our enthusiastic 4th formers and joins with Rossie Ostrich and Emma Emu as our mascots.

1983 may not have been one of great victories, though our main objective was to involve as many people as possible in the running of the house, while enjoying ourselves. This we achieved. I'd like to thank all the 6th formers for their help and cooperation and accepting all the responsibilities placed on them. Likewise, to the form representatives, and all the girls for their valuable contribution to the running of Roslyn. Thankyou,Miss Brookshaw and Staff, for your support and all the other houses for your competition. Although we didn't take out top honours, our enthusiasm was second to none. Take care everyone and come back fighting fit.

Venters House Report Our first house assembly this year saw many new and excited faces. All girls attended with enthusiasm, and perhaps also a quiet sense of assurance that the years of unique house spirit were finally going to pay off — and they certainly have.

The first major challenge for Venters girls arrived at the Swimming Sports. Many of our swimmers, and even some who weren't, took to the water to show their talents. After an enjoyable day, it was announced that Venters had successfully won, only by a small margin, the wooden spoon. But, all girls bounced back in preparation for the Aths.

Everyone cheered hard, and at the end of an exciting day, Venters was placed first. It was great to see girls' attempts to do a lap of honour, as it certainly was well-deserved. Through fifteen years of developing our talents, Venters had won the Athletic Sports!

For both the athletics and the swimming, all girls are to be congratulated on their individual and team efforts.

The annual bottle and stamp competitions provided an opportunity to show a real house effort. All girls and staff contributed, leaving Venters in fourth place for the bottle competition, and first place for the stamps (we collected a record-breaking 82,000).

Thanks to bottle and stamp reps., Carolyn and Debbie.

Music practices commenced at the start of term two for the music and drama competitions. We chose for our theme 'The Fair', and after girls adjusted to the idea of singing two lunchtimes a week, Leonie and Carol produced quite an impressive looking and sounding choir. Sam and Karina organized the drama, and overall we received a close second placing to Harris. Well done to all girls, and thanks for not moaning too much or yelling back.

Girls took part in house sport, work, and many other inter-house activities during the year, with all participating with enthusiasm.

This year, house members and staff have not only shown that Venters is, and I'm sure always will be, the most close-knit and enthusiastic house; but have also shown that our house motto "NO VICTORY WITHOUT EFFORT" certainly holds true for all that we do.

Thanks must go to all house members, including staff, for their continual support, friendship, and house spirit. I feel that these have contributed to make '83 such an enjoyable year for all.

To all girls, remember that it's how you take part and contribute that really counts, and not whether you win — victory doesn't always have to come in the form of 'first place'.

Wishing Venters the best of luck for the future.

Keep up the house spirit and effort, and victory will always be there.

The Giant Slalom Five! . . . Four! . . . Three! . . . Two! . . . One! . . . GO! With an enormous push, the skier plunged through the starting gate and headed off down the course at a tremendous pace. He raced along, balance perfect as gate after gate flashed by. He knew that any tiny slip would cost him the race— all concentration focused on taking the quickest possible route and perfect technique.

Even with his safety crash helmet on, he could hear the roaring of the excited crowd as he got closer and closer to the finish. He shot around the last gate, a curving arc of snow spraying out behind, and then tucked himself down, close to his skis.for the last 300 metres, urging them on to give him that tiny bit of extra speed as they skimmed across the, icy r . snow.

The finishing linc= flashed overhead; he was fast approaching the 1?.04" dary fence at a great pace, so he shifted his weight and turned his skis, the ends only inches away from the metal railing. He came to a halt facing uphill again. The crowd was screaming, yelling, applauding and cheering him, and realizing that victory was his, he punched his fist into the air.

Pain The muscles demanded rest, the body yelled for sleep, the heart pumped more than usual, but Cliff, full of determination,didn't give in.

The run from Sydney to Melbourne was one of demand and hardship. The road bumpy and hard, the sandshoes worn away, the muscles tensed, the heart thumping and the head yearning for sleep wouldn't stop the determined Cliff from finishing the task he set out to do.

His arm was bandaged strongly and his smile which faded in the rain made you feel kind of sorry for him.

Did he have enough stamina left to finish the gruelling race?

The crowd yelled and cheered as Cliff came past. The last 5 km would be extremely painful; although he limped, he could still give that warm smile and as the rain pelted down he lifted his hands and looked a winner. The finishing line was only 100m away; he knew he'd won.

Cold, wet, and in pain he accepted his trophies with pride and joy. Thanking everyone for their generosity, he got down from his stool and limped off in the rain, people cheering loudly. He had made it.

The middle-aged man in a silver grey business suit glanced up at the clock hanging on the wall opposite his desk, and wished he could will the hands to move immediately to the half-past position. But it was a railway clock, coldly precise and accurate, and he knew that it would not happen for another thirty-two and a half minutes. Being Thursday, the last minutes dragged on slowly. Wednesday and Thursday were colourless days which belonged neither to the beginning nor the end of the week. Still, he reminded himself that he would soon be home, but only after he had faced the mechanical jumble of traffic, the tangle of steel and glass which had to be negotiated each evening. Absently, he resolved to take the train tomorrow. After all, he worked for the railways, didn't he?

The Mask He stood under the spotlight. His face was green, gold and silver, his hair a wild shade of purple. His eyes gazed out from between two gold circles; they were sapphire blue as they twinkled under the light. To the adults in the audience, he was good for a laugh, to the children, he was magic, the reason you runaway and join the circus. Everybody loves a clown. He would fool with the other clowns, drown the audience in glitter, laughter, smiles and happiness.

He sat in his caravan. Alone. In front of him a mirror, and a table covered with jars of make-up and cleansing cream. Tissues covered with what, just a few seconds ago, was a permanent smile. Now his eyes, once sapphire blue and twinkling are cold and hard, as cutting as a knife. The purple hair had given way to a head, balding but grey. This is his real life — what he had been doing for more than half of his life; making people laugh; making people happy. But what had happened to his laughter, to his smiles and to his happiness? Somewhere through his life he lost all three. He once loved bringing magic to people's lives.

He had once enjoyed the magic of love in his own life; maybe when that love disappeared, that was when he really died inside. Still, the show must go on. Tomorrow night he will perform in his usual manner, with laughter, smiles and happiness. Again he will wear his mask.

The Tunnel The damp walls crowded in on all sides of us, droplets of water hung from the slimy bricks of the rounded tunnel walls and the darkness filled us with a cold, chilling sensation. Rats made hungry grunting noises from their repugnant, flearidden homes and squealed at two second intervals. They gnashed their teeth on stale bread and rotten vegetation and continued to scatter around our boots upon every step we made.

The stench was so strong it was hardly bearable but was more enticing than the meals served to us in the camp. Our clothes hung around us like limp rags, the blisters on our bodies making walking painful.

Sirens rang out through the night like an alarm ringing at midnight, dogs barked, and the guards prepared for a search, lined up with their torches and machine guns.

Once the tracker dogs were let out they picked up the scent almost immediately with the guards following close behind. Spotting lights well lit up the darkest depths of the night, sending bright rays in all directions.

He had a head the size of his behind and a nose like a salami. He had four legs of the very short variety which often caused him some consternation when they lagged behind the large, rolling body, the result of which was a mouthful of dirt. But I had to give him some credit, he always persevered. Despite the disaster of a body he had been born in, his heart was pure gold. I sometimes wondered if God had made a mistake and put him on the wrong production line.

He was an object of ridicule all his life. "Hey dog! Who cut off yer legs?" were often the only words he heard.

No-one told him he was beautiful. No-one told him he was a champion. No-one admired him. No-one, noone. Except me. I admired him. I loved him. I told him he was better than any other dog. But no matter how convincing I was, I knew he never really believed me.

Oh, he'd wag his tail and lick my hand, telling me not to worry. Then I'd hear him in the night, whimpering and crying himself to sleep. Often he would steal off to the bottom of the garden, tail dragging, to worry his worries alone. I saw him there once, when he wasn't aware of my presence, and never have I seen a look like that. It was more than remorse, more than self-pity. It was an indescribable scene of pain and sadness.

One day he moved more slowly to his weeping place.

As I watched him, even then, I had a premonition it was the last time I'd see him walk that way.

We buried him in that corner on a sunny day; a day he would have enjoyed if only he had lived a life of happiness.

We had almost reached the end of the tunnel when we heard the sirens and panicked. Two of our friends ran off towards the woods saying we had a better chance if we split up, but that did not prove to be right as soon after they left us, two shotgun blasts pierced our ear drums. We all knew the result of their short lives.

It moved with skill on the high stone wall as only a cat born to the streets could do.

As he moved into the night only his yellow eyes could be seen, piercing the blackness around them.

He moved with gracefulness and the speed of a hunter.

The Old Man The old man shut the door to his mountain cabin for the last time. Outside the air was fresh and clear, with still the last traces of morning fog lingering around about. The sun was just up, and the tips of its rays gently carressed the old man's face and body. On top of the mountain Jarom felt a sense of security; a security that he felt nowhere else. In the village far down below, the villagers were just beginning to stir.

The spirals of smoke slowly rising from the stone chimneys multiplied in front of Jarom's eyes. Soon the people would begin emerging from their decaying houses: Jarom turned away, for he knew that he couldn't bear to set his eyes upon those people.

Later on that day, Jarom would have to face the village, but he would make sure that there were no villagers around; for they were the people who had killed his wife.

A few nights ago, Tonya had come to her husband in a dream "Jarom, my darling husband, please do not leave me up here in heaven all by myself, I am lonely, come and visit me." So for the past two days, Jarom had been preparing himself to go and visit his wife in heaven.

After shutting up his house, Jarom walked quickly around to an outside shed and disappeared inside.

Many minutes later the door opened and out he stepped with a coffin on his back The path down to the village was not frequently used, the only travellers being the occasional goatherd who wandered up to see how Jarom was getting on. Jarom did not welcome these rare visits with open arms, as one might expect of someone who lived the life of a hermit. In fact he treated the herders with great indifference; for anyone who came between Jarom and his memories was not smiled upon.

Memories of his young and pretty wife, filled his days from dawn till dusk Tonya and he had experienced such wonderful times together: they were both instinctively curious and had developed an insatiable wanderlust Maybe fifty times in their ten years together, they had just up and left on a journey with a group of roving peasants, finding solitude in the vast expanses they crossed.

Jarom suddenly stumbled over a protruding root, but righted himself just in time, before falling coffin over heels down the steep hillside. Strange, he mused, how good times can so quickly turn to bad.

One summer Tonya had found herself growing fatter.

She told Jarom that a baby was on its way, that it would be with her by the winter season. Jarom, finding himself about to become a father, began straight away to build a home for his family to be. The house went up very quickly, for Jarom did not mind hard work, and he realized that he was now responsible for both his wife 46

and the child. Then one night, when Jarom was dogtired, something disastrous happened. Jarom fell down off the roof of the near-completed house and broke his leg. Now he could not finish the house, and at this time of year, when every available man was out helping to gather the crops he was unlikely to receive willing assistance. Both winter and the baby were fast advancing. There was no money being brought into the house any more, and so Tonya, in her miserable state had to go out and offer her unskilled services to any who would take her.

Very soon she became ill, and lost her baby. Jarom never could understand how anyone could just lose a baby, but because of Tonya's wretchedness he did not take her to task The loss of the child seemed to exacerbate his wife's illness, and as a result Jarom had to take charge of a weak and helpless woman. By this time, Jarom's leg had healed sufficiently for him to go back to work at the local carpenter's and Tonya's physical health had also improved. But her diseased mind was still unstable.

Now halfway down the mountain, the ropes began to cut into Jarom's skin. Where the ropes had tied the box onto his back, there were patches of raw flesh. Never a man to complain, Jarom made the best of what was available, using bark from the trees to pad his clothing.

He stood there a while, looking out over the side of the mountain. He had made much progress, since first setting out that morning; for now the village did not seem so remote, and he could just make out the church tower. That was the church where they had married, and where Tonya had died.

Before long, Tonya's illness became apparent to the village people. Since they were all supposedly Godly people, Jarom had assumed that they would pity both he and his wife; but instead they outcast Jarom and Tonya from their close-knit community. They began to make accusations against Jarom, saying that he treated his wife badly. "You show me one mark on her body that has been touched by angry hands," protested Jarom: but they would not listen.

Soon Tonya began wandering off from the village, and many a night when Jarom came home from work, he would have to go out searching for his wife. These incessant wanderings became common knowledge amongst the villagers, and as before they showed that their maturity and tolerance were both below par.

"You, old woman are a threat to our children. Stop molesting them; go home." For Jarom to see his wife treated in this way was heart-breaking. His love for her had never waned, and in some respects it had grown even greater.

The screech of a bird split the air. Jarom looked up to see the broiling mid- day sun straight over head. He was no ignorant old fool, and he knew that if he pressed

on regardless of this superior force of nature, he would soon wither. He unstrapped the wooden box from his back and lay down to rest under the shade of a tree.

A few months had passed, and Tonya's mind had deteriorated even further. Jarom's attempts to find things to amuse her with had all been in vain, for she had never been a person to find solace indoors. One morning Jarom had set off to work as usual; just before his lunch break, he had heard a commotion stirring outside. He had strolled casually out of the carpenter's workshop to see a crowd of people gathered in front of the church. Their necks were craned upwards, and when Jarom followed their line of vision he saw his wife on top of the church roof. "Jump, you mad crow, come on, we want you to jump," yelled someone from the crowd. "Yes, end your sinful life, we don't want you molesting our children anymore, jump!" Jarom barged through the crowd, the sadistic mass, his arms flailing, and screaming at the top of his voice, "Heathens!!!" He had pleaded with her, begged of her to come down. For almost an hour he had stood there, and during that time the crowd had multiplied; now the whole village was there.

"Jump, jump. . ."

"No, don't do this .

"Jump".

"Don't do this to my wife.

"Jump, jump. . ."

"Please, no, no, no. . . " /5

Jarom stood up and brushed himself off; the sun had gone down sufficiently for him to begin on the last leg of his journey. The village was now only a matter of an hour away. Slowly, reluctantly, he tied the coffin onto his back once more, and began again down the path to the village.

The sky was aglow with the pinks, the oranges, and the reds of the eastern sunset, when Jarom finally descended down into the village. The day's travelling had wearied him, and his heavy load had made the going even rougher than it might have been. His mouth was parched and the soles of his feet bled, but Jarom continued on heedless of the racking pain. As he scuffed through the filth-harbouring lanes of the small village, Jarom tried to search his mind for one of those good times that he had experienced in these places.

Nothing would come; after all, he was an old man.

Nobody can see me, anyway, at least thats how they all behave. They don't talk to me, they ignore me. But I know that's only to make me think they're not watching me.

I sit here and I stare at the ground. Luckily my hat is large and I can catch them staring at me, momentarily, before they realize. Always just as I catch their eyes, they turn away, guilty.

Everywhere I go, they are there.

I didn't realize you, my wife, were one of them, and you had come back for revenge. But it became so clear to me after the accident.

Accident! You drove at the ladder deliberately. You knew I'd fall. You did it on purpose, I know.

I wasn't killed though; I fell through the window. My face and hands were shredded like lettuce, and the scarring was terrible, but I survived. (For what? Even you could not look at me without showing revulsion. A living death). Now I was on my guard; you weren't going to get another chance.

When I arrived home, I planned. We went to bed that night and I did it. I suffocated you. You couldn't have fooled me with those large pleading eyes, full of false repentance, after I accused you of your crime. I closed them with the pillow and I squeezed. I pressed harder and harder until your body went limp. I'd planned it well, yes, I'd considered every detail.

Oh, I smile to myself when I think how neatly I carried out each step. I laid the body in the bath and cut it into pieces with your meat cleaver, unwieldy thing that it is; pieces small enough to fit through the mincer. It took me two days to complete; I worked all that time, but I did it so neatly no one could ever know.

There were only two dogs in the pound when I got there. Mangy, half starved creatures they were but I paid the dog-keeper and bought them home for the feast of their lives.

I couldn't stay in the house after that. You were still there; I could feel you waiting round the corner or in the street to catch me, so I left. I told the neighbours you had left me and we were selling the house. They didn't say much, just looked at me. Then I realized that you had them too, more spirit people. I ripped off your apron with your blood all over it and I ran.

You'll send them after me. I won't be safe here so I'll hide, Pm good at that. But they'll still follow me.

I'll just have to get them first.

I try to be inconspicuous. I wear ordinary clothes and I don't say much; you know what Fm like. In fact,I don't usually say anything unless they speak to me.

In the waiting room at Dr. Benjamin's surgery I first noticed them. I went there last week for my final treatment and there were two of them sitting opposite me as I waited my turn. One was disguised as a pregnant woman, the other as a business man.

The woman put on a very clever act. She was almost as clever as you were. She had a child, a wingeing little brat, to whom she kept whispering not to come near me. What do they think I am? a leper?

So I stared at her. I gave her one of the most menacing, evil glares I could rouse. I thought of you and what you'd tried to do to me. I put all that hatred into my stare and it worked. Each time she looked at me her face was filled with ever increasing fear, until finally she grabbed her brat and ran from the room. The man grew fidgety and left soon after.

Since then I've found I can usually throw them off that way. They don't like to be found out. They don't like it when they realize I know what they're after. They're all cowards. It's only you that makes them do it.

They only used to talk to me at night, before. I never told you though, even when I didn't know you were one of them. But I told Dr. Benjamin. He talked to me and helped me learn how to ignore them. They never appeared as people though, only as voices. At least, not until I got rid of you.

The spirits of all those young men, with their guns and their uniforms. They didn't realize that I had to kill them. Not just because they were the enemy, I saved them from the suffering of living. Don't you see; I set them free forever. They had nothing to look forward to, their lives were a misery out there.

So I killed them, I killed them all.

Walking towards the schoolyard, I felt a bit like crying, A senior rushed right by me, School bag and hair ribbons flying.

Another year and nothing to show.

They haven't even gone grey.

It looks as though we're stuck with them, Teachers are here to stay.

As I hobbled down the footpath, (my new shoes were far too tight), I felt lonely and confused, perhaps homesick just a mite!

They make you glad to be at school, (hollow laughter) Their faces bright and sunny.

Remember their item in the proms, Rather quaint and funny.

Around the next corner, the locker rooms it seems, where chaos reigned amidst, the shouts and boisterous screams.

At lunch it's the staffroom, For refuge it would seem.

They do deserve a little time, To feast on cakes and cream (we know).

Instinctively I shrank back.

I felt I couldn't face, those devils and screaming cats.

This couldn't be the right place.

Who's this coming down the hall, Using her fingers to add, Mrs. Mac, what has come over you?

Our maths can't be all that bad.

As I looked around in horror, I chanced to see a tree, Could this possibly be, A sanctuary for me?

And who's that out on the window ledge, Clutching a Shakespeare play, Mrs Quickmire is Juliet, But Romeo's run away.

Behind that tree I spied, A new chum, like myself.

So slowly I wandered down, that long and winding path.

Mrs Martin, stop sharpening your baton, We know of us you tire, But please take that thing away from your throat, We promise we'll come to choir.

We chatted there for a while, but uh, oh there's the bell.

Would we survive the first day?

Only time would tell.

With respect as great as our marks in exams, Each one of them is a friend.

From the bottom of our hearts we're sorry.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Report of Junior Auxiliary President: Jan Perry Vice President: Shirley Gordon Hon. Secretary: Anne Waayers Hon. Treasurer: Val Woods The Annual/General meeting was held on the 18th October, 1982. Retiring committee members were thanked for their most valuable support during their term of office. New committee members were welcomed.

Our Christmas break-up on November 15th, 1982 was a delightful luncheon held at the Lord of the Isles Tavern, relaxing and enjoying fellowship. All who attended I am sure thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Our guests, Miss Brookshaw and Mrs Fox, joined in our fellowship on this festive occasion.

The first meeting for 1983, was very well attendethit was most pleasing to see so many new faces. Miss Brookshaw and Mrs Fox were also able to join us answering any questions concerning Primary Department.

Our Coffee/Wine Dessert evening held on March 10th was overwhelmingly successful with many new and old parents of the school meeting socially and enjoying the company of Primary Department staff and Miss Brookshaw. Thanks to all who helped cater for the evening.

March saw our Annual School Fair take place, and what a great day it was! Our biscuit and Children's novelties were well supported and I do thank all, very sincerely for their effort.

The annual "Sausage Sizzle" was held during the May School Holidays at Mr. and Mrs. J. Woods property. It was well patronised and all who attended certainly had a great day's entertainment. Many thanks to the "Woods Family" for their generosity in allowing us all to invade their property and for the setting up and organizing the Children's program. It is very much appreciated.

At our Auxiliary meetings over the year we have had guest speakers of interest to our mothers, and I am quite sure they have enjoyed the Cuppa and Social chat' at the conclusion of the meetings. Thanks to all the mothers who have supported us during the past 12 months.

On July 24th we held a B.B.Q. — Bush Dance. The day was just perfect, the band enjoyable, and it was very well attended. Thanks to John Agar and Geoff Ainsworth for organising the cooking, Shirley Gordon and Dianna Moodie for decorating the hall— just great, and perfectly setting the scene of the bush. To all the committee for their help in catering— many thanks.

To all the staff who joined us for the occasion — many thanks once again.

The Committee has organised the purchase of a variety of equipment, value $900, for Primary Dept.

These items are:- 15 outdoor garden sets, one tape player and a stop watch. Further equipment is still to be negotiated.

Throughout the year Junior Auxiliary has had loyal support from Mrs. Fox and the staff of Primary Dept., Mrs. Lewis and the catering staff and also the outdoor staff providing back-up for our social functions. To them all I extend a thankyou. Also to all the mothers who graciously help out in the used clothing shop, many thanks — and well done.

In closing my report I would like to mention that during the past 2 years I have enjoyed my term in office. I would like to sincerely thank my hard working committee for the full support that they have given me, and to all the new office bearers and committee I wish you every success for 1984 and to all the school community. I wish you all a most enjoyable school vacation, and look forward to the new school year with interest.

Netball The Morongo Junior School Netball teams participated in the Y.W. C.A. Winter Season Competition at Kardinia Park. The teams entered included a Grade 6 team— The Blues, and a composite Grade 4, 5 and 6 team — The Yellows. Both teams played in the same grade, so matches played against each other were keenly contested.

Members of The "Blues" team included— Georgina Fidge, Jane McCormack, Prue Nadorp, Sarah VickersWillis, Jackie Hedley, Sarah Lewis, Narelle Durante, Sophie Plumridge and Annabel Austin. Members of the "Yellows" team included Samantha Kennedy, Fiona Watkins, Susan Petty, Narelle Durante, Leah Gardner, Natalie Morrison, Sally-Anne Morrison, Fiona Perry, Chloe Plumridge, Paula Robertson, Vicki Hedley.

Practices were very enthusiastically attended and the girls improved their netball skills greatly. This was apparent from the on-court displays as the season progressed.

At the end of the season The Blues finished third and The Yellows, fifth. Overall it was an enjoyable season and we extend our thanks to the parents for their encouragement and support. Thank you also to Sarah Hodgkinson, a senior girl, for her help and interest in The Blues.

Multi Cultural Evening Welcome , ladies and gentlemen, to Morongo's second annual Multi-cultural evening. As we sit here in the magnificent Gertrude Pratt Hall, one can feel the tension mounting. Yes, the lights are dimming and I believe they are ready to begin.

Here come the two nervous announcers who will guide us through the evening, both dressed appropriately. The acts are coming in quick successuccession, all with a distinct international flavour.

Well, the evening has been most entertaining, with items coming from Years 7 to 12. We've been treated to different forms of folk dancing, singing from around the world, and various sketches and plays. Highlights of these must have been "La Belle Endormie" by the Year 11 French class and "Rotk‘appchen" performed by the Year 11 Uerman class. We were most impressed with the colourful extravaganzas presented by the Spanish and Italian dancers. We were also captivated by the haunting ballads of Danny Spooner.

Now, at the completion of the performances we see the crowd mingling between the heavily laden tables of international cuisine, and savouring the delicacies of other lands.

Well, I'm afraid we've come to the end of our coverage of this spectacular event, and hope that you at home, have enjoyed the evening as much as we have.

History Week The celebration of History Week at Morongo this year was timed to coincide with National Heritage Week, and over the five days of its duration, students and staff joined in a wide variety of activities ranging from an archaeological "dig", a mini-olympics, and quizzes, to poster and essay competitions conducted at the different form levels.

The visit of folk-singer/historian, Danny Spooner, was a great success, and his presentation of songs together with some information about their background, delighted and intrigued all those able to share in these sessions.

Both girls and staff in costumes belonging to a particular person or period paraded on the quadrangle one lunchtime, and this was followed by singers and instrumentalists from year12 who developed the theme of music and Australian history.

It is with pleasure that I present this report for the Parents & Friends Association. The aim of the P& F is to promote fellowship to all parents, and through the strength of our association give support to the school.

The P & F organized an evening in February to meet with new parents & staff. The annual Country Fair was held in March and approx. $5,000 was raised to help furnish the new music rooms. We also catered for lunch for open day in October.

The Annual Meeting was held on 27th April 1983.

The meeting was poorly attended; this was very disappointing for the committee, Miss Brookshaw and the school council, especially as Mrs. Martin, Senior Music Mistress, had organized a recital by several students on the new grand piano, provided by funds raised by the P & F. Next year we will be forwarding to all parents nomination forms, so that vacancies for the committee can be filled prior to the meeting night, as parents can attend without fear of being pressurised into committee positions.

We hope parents wil take the opportunity to attend functions and meetings so they can meet the parents of their daughters' friends, while enjoying fellowship and fundraising.

Senior Auxiliary President: Mrs. C. Carr Vice President: Mrs. J. Watson Secretary: Mrs. J. Gill Treasurer: Mrs. J. Calvert On the first Monday of each month, the Morongo Senior Auxiliary meets in Shaw House. Mothers of Senior School students are invited to attend these meetings.

Our program for the year was — October: This was the Annual Meeting when retiring office bearers were thanked for their work during the past year and presentations made.

November: Mrs. Judy Bent gave an interesting demonstration of china painting. At this meeting, Miss Brookshaw was presented with a Christmas cake for the staff.

March: As this was the first meeting for 1983, we welcomed new mothers to our Auxiliary. From all members present, we were able to obtain volunteers for stalls at the Country Fair. An informative talk about Morongo was given by Mr. John Robb. the Chairman of the school council.

April: We were the guests of the Junior Auxiliary when we enjoyed a demonstration of bread making.

May: The drama teacher at Morongo, Mrs Isobel Deller, spoke about Dramatic Art and the work involved in producing the musical "Sound of Music".

June: Mrs. Ann Henderson, the co-ordinator of "Do Care" in Geelong spoke of the work of this organization.

August: Mrs. Linda Bremner, who is the Careers and Work Experience Advisor at Morongo, told about the positions available to the girls for their work experience.

On August 3rd., a Film Evening was held at the Pix Theatre. This was our main fundraising function for the year. As a result, a profit in excess of $1000 was made.

The Used Uniform Shop continues to provide a useful service to parents.

During the year, the Auxiliary has given a coffee machine and two easy chairs for use in the Laird Centre.

I would like to express appreciation to Miss Brookshaw for her interest and regular attendance at our meetings. My thanks also go to the Committee members of the Senior Auxiliary for all their assistance during 1983.

Old Collegians moving to Canberra to live, either short term or long, I am sure will be made most welcome.

As usual our year has been very busy doing what we can to support our school and keeping Old Collegians in touch with friends throughout the country and exchanging news between the scattered branches.

The yearly Reunions as with previous years have been thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended.

On Friday November 26th, 120 Old Collegians attended the 1935-45 Reunion which was capably organised by Pam Warland (Robertson) and Nancy Orr (Barr). Miss Shaw was made very welcome on this occasion, also Miss Dunoon who was a Teacher in the early years of the School.

The Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, November 27th in the Music room at Morongo. Helen Richardson (Profitt) was able to announce at this meeting that our Association has been able to contribute financially to the purchase of the School's first rowing shell, named Lucernia. The oars were donated by the Branches, two by Melbourne Branch and one each by Goulburn Valley and Wimmera Branches. They were suitably inscribed and have been painted in the School Colours. The Meeting was followed by the Reunion Luncheon held in the Founders Dining Hall. Old Collegians, School Captains and Guests had a most enjoyable meal catered for by the Committee.

We were privileged to be one of the first Committees to use the facilities of the kitchen and dining-room of the Laird Centre, where, at the beginning of the year we entertained the Teaching and Office staff of the school to drinks and savouries.

The two Morning Coffee mornings, one at Judy Williams (Lindsay) and one at my home were enjoyed by those who attended. I thank Judy for opening her home and June Winter (Hartwick) for showing us her very large spoon collection.

Even though the Old Collegians Tennis day looked lit e being postponed because of the welcome rain after the drought the day went ahead as planned and 34 tennis players took to the courts. My thanks go to Jeanette Bell, Prue Cooke, and all who helped provide the lunch.

I do thank the Old Collegians who represented us at the Sun Tennis and Sun Golf Cups held in Melbourne. Special thanks to Jan Keats (Nimon) tennis and Marjorie Carroll (Field) golf for organising the teams. The members of the Tennis team were Lindy Morwooci, Belinda Richardson,

Julie Forbes and Jan Keats. I he volt players were Marjorie Poulston (Barnes), Marj Carroll, Helen Drinnan (Weaver), Prue Cooke (McEwan), Margaret Herd (Lee) and Helen Richardson.

The Old Collegians in the swimming relay team this year were Mandy Schooneman, Di Weater, Marion Williams and Belinda Richardson.

Members of the Committee have been made most welcome at the Branch meetings. I thank the Office Bearers of the branches for all they do to make these occasions so enjoyable.

We have been guests at functions held by our sister schools, these happy occasions help us to keep in touch and give us the opportunity to make new friends.

I had the pleasure of being present at the National Council of Womens President's Day early in the year, my thanks go to June McColl (Orchard) for keeping us informed. The Old Collegians are well represented on the National Council of Women, Dorothy Ruxton (Brown) is the President and Jennie Currie (Bradshaw) the Secretary.

The mid-year Luncheon was held in the Founders Dining Hall on Wednesday 15th June. Our guest speaker was Merran Hall (Urquhart) who gave us a very interesting and enlightening talk about her work with the Child Accident Prevention Foundation.

We combined with Hermitage again this year for the golf day held at the Geelong Club on July 4th, my thanks go to Marjorie Carroll and Anne Howarth for arranging the day.

I was privileged to be present at the farewell evening for Miss Roma Steere at the School on June 24th. On behalf of the Old Collegians I presented her with flowers to wish her well in her retirement.

During the year we have had a number of Lucernians bound into volumes to add to our Archives Collection.

Over the last few years the Members of the Committee have entertained the girls leaving school at lunchtime/ telling them about our Association. I am sure this meeting with the girls has contributed to the enrolment of new members.

There are many people I wish to thank for their assistance during the last twelve months. Firstly, June Winter, my Secretary, Anne Howarth for several years as Treasurer, and to all Committee Members for their hard work and devotion.

Secondly, Miss Brookshaw for her interest and support, also the Teaching, Office and Catering Staff for their help.

Obituary Lorna Mund (Gill)Lorna, who lived in New Zealand, was a president of the Old Collegians for three years from 1944 to 1946.

News Miss Botterill is now residing in Chesterfield Nursing Home in Newtown and would welcome a visit from Old Collegians.

Year 12 Dux 1982, Melissa Butler, obtained 5 A's in H.S.C., including 100% for Pure Mathematics.

She was awarded the B. H. P. annual prize, the second girl only to receive it in the history of the award. Melissa also won a Scholarship to St. Hilda's College, and is reading Medecine at Melbourne University.

Shauna Hocking, who was head of Morongo Drama Committee in 1981, and played leading roles in "Little Women" and "Godspell" has continued to work hard towards a professional career in the theatre since leaving school.

During this year Shauna has won her way to the Grand Final of "Stairway to the Stars" on Brisbane television, gaining second place. Chanel 9 in Brisbane want her to appear with them, and Chanel 9 Melbourne, have invited her to appear on the Don Lane Show.
