There are many associated with Morongo whom students will look back on as having special relevance to their lives. It may be lifelong friends they gained at their time at school, a teacher who gave unlimited help or perhaps a respected prefect. 1993 has given us the memory of a special person, a hero in the eyes of many Australians and a friend to Morongo.

The late Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop had a strong affiliation with Morongo. His wife, Helen Ferguson, was an Old Collegian and he donated our foyer, dedicating it to Helen, in a moving Opening Ceremony. He was the guest speaker at the Morongo Church Service in 1989. Over the years he kept in contact with the school, receiving The Lucernian annually and discussing with our Principal, Mrs .Watt , the activities and achievements of the school.

We, therefore, have more reason than many to take to heart the principles by which he lived.

Sir Edward Dunlop was a hero in life. His gifts were many but it was the use of these gifts, in particular during the time he spent as a POW in World War 11, which showed so clearly the depth of his character. A natural leader, he was Camp Commander on many occasions, dealing efficiently and ingeniously with the problems which arose. He once calmly passed off a radio ( a precious item which had been smuggled into the camp) as medical equipment. The penalty, if that radio had been detected, was certain death.

Others always came first. With no apparent concern for his own safety, he elected to remain with this patients after the fall of Singapore. His skills were desperately needed in the prison camps in which he would spend the remainder of the war. Often he performed complicated surgery with instruments and medicines that could only be considered primitive. He gave of himself to others, tending to their needs unselfishly, whilst suffering the same complaints - recurring malaria, malnutrition and exhaustion. Despite this, 'Weary' did not spent time hating the Japanese soldiers, who inflicted such suffering on himself and his men, but he worked for the present and the future, moving on from the past.

The principles 'Weary' Dunlop lived by can be applied to our own lives in many situations. He forgave the Japanese for their torture; he could not hate them. In forgiveness, we learn so much about ourselves and the nature of humility. Our understanding of others is extended and our character is enriched. Forgiveness also adds to the happiness of those forgiven, allowing them to feel better about themselves.

Sir Edward Dunlop believed in the freedom of the spirit. He knew that physical constrictions cannot stifle the privacy of thought; nor can they kill the spirit. To keep up camp morale, he organized sporting events and lectures, given by academics within the camp, to satisfy starving minds, helping the men forget the pain and deprivation. He never gave up trying to improve the diets of those in camp, using his bi-lingual skills to secure an extra source of protein - duck eggs, one per day for every man. In the same way, if we can keep on trying, striving for an ideal which seems impossible, we will feel proud that we have achieved something worthwhile.

Because of the way Sir Edward Dunlop chose to exercise his skills, he was to the POWs 'the inspiration and main instrument of their physical and spiritual survival' calling upon 'his unfailing sense of humour and his light and classical use of irony as a means of defeating self pity and reducing the intrusions of fate in the life of himself and those under his command to bearable human proportions.' We, at Morongo, admire his skills, but skills alone do not make a person great. It is how the individual uses his skills that determines greatness. We may not possess the gifts of Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop, but we can all apply his example to our lives. It is up to each of us to find the potential within ourselves, both at school where we are encouraged and given the opportunity to excel, and out in ther world. To have the knowledge that you have used your gifts wisely , fully and for others is to be content.

'You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care nor your nights without a want or a grief.But rather when these things girdle your life and yet you rise above them Kahlil Gibran I doubt if there has been a century in history when there has been such a universal consciousness of the notion of freedom. In less than the short span of a normal life we have seen emerging many groups wishing to live by their own decisions rather than by the decisions of those who govern them: we repeatedly hear and witness both individuals and groups asserting the right to exercise their freedoms. We have seen the strong claim the right to impose their will upon the weak and minorities claim the freedom to exert influence on communities.

Education, and the inevitable freeing of the mind, has meant a willingness and an ability to question and to learn from much once held to be almost sacred. In the assault on long accepted hypotheses in science, in Biblical scholarship, in business management and even in the criticism of the Australian Constitution, we have seen and are continuing to see a questioning of tradition. Freedom brings a loosening of the shackles of ignorance, poverty and powerlessness.

From your study of history you will know that not all freedoms have led to good. This has been a century of mass oppressions, of horrific annihilations and of long and disastrous wars. Much of this has been in the name of freedom, yet it has cost millions of people the great personal freedoms of thought, conscience and human dignity.

Want and grief have been ever present realities.

At the same time, however, these same personal freedoms have been enjoyed by more people than ever before.

Through the work of organizations such as the United Nations and Amnesty International, there is a world-wide consciousness of the right of every person to be free to express ideas, to worship and to live without undue restriction. The emergence of women of many countries, including our own, into political and civil freedoms has been a feature of the last few decades.

Freedom has meant that many of this century's leaders have come from that group in society termed 'ordinary citizens'. Sometimes imprisoned for their beliefs, the great leaders have sought not only political rights for those in their country but that every person should be able to exercise true freedom of spirit , and to live without hate and fear. Sir Edward Dunlop could not free his fellow prisoners of war from the Japanese camp but he knew that he could, through his care , encouragement and example, free them from bitterness and despair and enable them to rise above their situation.

We live in an exciting century . You have the opportunity to adventure into ways laid open by new freedoms available to young women. Stamina and resilience will be needed if you are to be undaunted; you will need goals and faith in your ability to reach them. I trust that at Morongo we are preparing you for this by encouraging independence and fostering qualities of responsibility and determination. But I hope that we are doing more than this for you and that each one of you is developing that true inner spirit of freedom which will enable you to rise above all that you perceive to be selfish and undesirable both within yourself and in your world.

As it was for Dickens, it was for us a time of great change, of learning, of experiences, a time devoted to the institution of education - school. School, not bricks and mortar, but real and caring people, from whom we were to acquire equipment for life; the art of interacting, the art of learning, the art of grasping opportunities. We would gain friends, stories and very special memories. It was a time unlike any other.

It was an age when opportunity had to be taken. An Indian Proverb states : 'Just as a bee gathers honey from all flowers, so the wise man gathers knowledge from all men'. We began to gather that knowledge avidly. There were many teams to try out for, many activities to attend, many lives to lead and limited sleep to be had. Opportunities arose at every corner with the gamut of extra curricular activities offered. It was an age of experiment.

It was an epoch of self development. There were many personalities to experience and many people to consider. The world became larger and more exciting.

From this microcosm we were alerted to the fact that women can be successful in this society. For success in a world of five billion other people, we were given a special Morongo philosophy to apply to our lives: Sint Lucernae Ardentes - keep your lamps forever burning. It was an epoch of awakening.

It was a season for which we have much to be thankful. Teachers were committed to our development and success; always understsanding and helpful, willing to put in extra effort at all times.

They never underestimated the importance of praise.

Mark Twain said, 'I can live for two years on a compliment'; we were granted a lifetime. Such dogged commitment and caring we are unlikely to experience again. Friends were supportive: friends were made for life. It was a season of belief in ourselves.

Soon there will come a time when all the hard work of our schooling will be rewarded. Goals will be reached, life will be experienced to the full - and what a life it promises to be! We have been encouraged to grasp opportunities and to believe in ourselves. We have been given confidence to know that we can take risks, try something we have never done before, and succeed. Forty years ago Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to conquer Mt. Everest. Since then 485 people can boast that same feat. Conditions have not changed but, with the knowledge that it can be done, others have been willing to take the risk. In this time to come anything is possible.

skills while tirelessly trying to convince people to donate prizes for the Ball and the raffles. Members indulged their fertile imaginations while deciding on decorating themes, organising raffle tickets and giving reports in assembly that not only provided new fashion trends but also enthused prospective beaus and belles with extracts from Buddy Holly and 'spot ' prizes. The proceeds of the Ball went towards the upgrading of the stage lighting in the Gertrude Pratt Hall to benefit every student in the school.

1993 has been year of excitement and challenges for the MSC under the direction of Anne Kidman and Sarah-Jane Walker.

The Council's year began with the World Environment Day when we decided to clean up our local area. The clean-up was followed by a sausage sizzle to raise much needed funds for United Way. Next on our agenda was the first Student Leaders Day which was a great success, thanks to Heidi Roberts and Claire Hindmarsh who did the organising. The guest speaker, Charn Prasad, gave valuable advice to the student leaders who were there representing their schools.

Our special thanks go to Mrs Watt and Mr Smith for their contribution to the MSC and for encouraging us to believe that we can made a difference.

Once again I watched as the settling in period repeated itself.

Jubilant greetings of experienced boarders brought life to the Boarding House. Newcomers, after shedding those few initial tears and finding themselves woken at an unearthly hour on the first morning by the inevitable bell, soon settled into the grind of everyday Boarding House life.

The first weekend, as usual, was set aside for the Boarders'Picnic. Although the weather betrayed us, the picnic at Airey's Inlet was a success. In no time new friendships began to blossom.

The Boarders jumped into a busy, but fulfilling agenda for Boarders' Week. The Hall came alive as we changed our identities from dedicated schoolgirls to social bugs at the annual Boarders' Dance. Although the Geelong college boys seemed bashful at first, the Boarders, in true fashion , did not hesitate to make them feel welcome. From social bugs to hospitable girls, we invited the staff and daybugs to taste the life of boarding. Staff had the opportunity to create images of boarding life as they toured and visited our immaculate rooms. Daybugs were enticed to spend a weekend with us.

They were delighted to experience our leisurely weekend of videos, pizza, doonas and friends. Even though the daybugs proved a little better at softball and netball than the boarders, we made them sweat and we clearly took the prize for the loudest and most enthusiastic cheer squad.

We also gave the daybugs and staff the opportunity of sharing some of the different cultures we have in the Boarding House.

From sportsgirls to social workers, our feet did the work when the Red Cross and Salvation Army needed our assistance. We raised nearly $1,000 for each cause and proudly accepted a certificate presented to us by a member of the Salvation Army.

The Boarding House Committee has been supportive and active this year. Thanks to Linda Van Leerdam and jacinta Stephens, a very popular and profitable canteen has been introduced enabling us all to enjoy chips, snakes and those famous two minute noodles. The committee decided that profits , together with raffle proceeds, would go towards the purchase of a Bain Marie. Currently, the production of a Boarders' T - shirt is progressing well. House House Captains, Rachael Allen and Tiffany Karlsson ,have organized nail-biting games of footy and mini round robins of pool and table tennis.

Breakfasts have become luxurious this year with the introduction of croissants, muffins and crumpets. The most exciting incident occurred when both boarding houses were plunged into darkness when a truck hit a powerline in Separation Street. CATs disappeared off our screens and girls clung to each other in the dim light of a tiny candle.

As I was being driven along the driveway, I realized what wonderful memories and friendships boarding life has given me. The nature of boarding life teaches independence, how to live together and how to accept others who are different from yourself, culturally and morally. I advise my fellow boarders to appreciate these gifts and the development of qualities that will be of benefit in the future.

Already I can detect future leaders in the Boarding House and I am sure they will keep the spirit alive and burning forever.

ROWING The Morongo rowers began their path to glory at Dimboola.

The first rowing camp was held in the Term 3 holidays 1992 for crew selection. It was the beginning of fitness training which involved long runs from our luxurious camp accommodation to the boat sheds and acquiring many blisters from gruelling rows.

All seven crews had a successful first half season at the many regattas in which we took part. The junior crews travelled to the Horsham and Dimboola Regattas and the first VIII had a win at the Colac Regatta. Crews also rowed at Ballarat and on the Yarra.

The business end of the season started with a training camp on the Barwon. Final crew selections were made and training increased. Rowers grew accustomed to early mornings, torturous ergos and punishing swing throughs but it was all worth it when wins were achieved by all crews at several regattas. The juniors and some senior crews rowed at VRA Junior regattas on the Barwon and Yarra and the first and seconds competed at places such as Carrum, Henley and the Barwon, all with mixed results.

Congratulations to Sally Tyack who skulled at the Nationals in Brisbane and came second in the Schoolgirl skull.

In February, a Row-a-thon was organised with girls rowing all day to raise money for new coxswain head sets for each boat.An ergo is now accessible at school thanks to the Chirnside Club-who raised money from wine sales to buy it .

The highlight of the season, The Head of the Schoolgirls' Regatta ,was held on 20 and 21 March and Morongo girls had fine achievements. After months of hard training, lifting weights and carbohydrate loading, we were ready for the challenge.

Three crews were victorious: the second IV, the Year 10 IV and Year 10 crew 3. All other crews reached the finals to make this regatta one of Morongo's most successful.

SWIMMING The first major sports event on the calendar for 1993 arrived early in Term 1 with busloads of enthusiastic swimmers and cheerleaders causingthe roof to reverberate with war cries at Norlane Water World.

From this event the School Swimming Squad was selected to compete at the GPSVSA Carnival. On 10 March 1993, the swimming team travelled to the State Swimming Centre. Most of us were unsure of our chances of success against the Melbourne Schools but all girls participated with enthusiasm when facing tough competition.

The next meeting was held at Geelong Grammar and some excellent performances were achieved.

We thank Miss Carr and Mr Hutley for dragging themselves out of bed in the early morning to train our swimmers , always with untiring enthusiasm.

The Hockey firsts proved to be a team not to be underestimated in 1993. Morongo teams have been viewed as 'just a bunch of schoolgirls' for a long time, but this year we proved that wrong.

The year began with a vicory and ended with Morongo playing Geelong in the Grand Final. Unfortunately we lost but it was a great achievement. All team members gave 100% throughout the season and played exceptionally well.

This year will not only be remembered for the brilliant play by for how much all the team members enjoyed the matches and the training sessions. We would like to thank Miss Carr and Chris Armstead for their valuable coaching throughout the season. Thankyou also to all who cheered us on from the sidelines and helped make the '93 season sensational. Good luck to the 1994 team. Play hard and make the Grand Final for a second year.

SOFTBALL The first Term of 1993 brought with it a group of eager and talented softballers, with some new faces among the old. The trials took place, and training proceeded in preparation for the big event that all softballers work towards, the Round Robins for junior, intermediate and senior teams.

As a warm up to the Round Robins and the tougher Melbourne opposition, an open team of girls ranging from years nine to twelve, boarded the bus for a game against Westbourne Grammar in Werribee. A happy team came home triumphant, with an ego-boosting 26 to 4 victory. Several weeks later, we returned Westbourne's hospitality, and they played a Morongo team brimming with confidence on our home ground, which we used to our advantage, winning the game 19 runs to 3.

The Intermediate Round Robin replaced the Senior one as the first on the softball calendar for this year, after rained-out diamonds proved dangerous in the slippery conditions.

Morongo hosted the Round Robin, and with only enough year nine and ten girls to fill one team, the junior A's also doubled as the intermediate "B" team, and put in a creditable performance, coming fourth overall against teams with up to two years more experience. The intermediate A's played some highly skilled and cunning softball throughout their games, finishing equal first in their division. The final results :

The Junior Round Robin played at PLC was the next on the agenda. The girls of both teams played extremely well, considering the opposition included several Victorian representatives. Pieces of brilliance shone through in what was otherwise a slightly disheartening result. However, both the junior "A" and "B" teams regained some pride with a big win over Beallic College, 14 to 2 and 11 to 3 respectively.

Much to the senior team's delight, a twilight Round Robin was held at PLC in place of the cancelled one in Toorak, a month earlier. Unfortunately for us, our major league standard did not continue, with the A's remaining winless despite peppering their games with some outstanding play. CROSS COUNTRY - 1993 Seniors I.

This year Morongo had twelve energetic and determined Netball teams competing in the 1993 Saturday morning Netball Competition held at Kardinia Park. The netballers frequently showed their talent and displayed their skills, while also keeping up the Morongo spirit of fair play.

The netball teams also competed in Inter-school Round Robins. Our Senior Round Robin was of high standard and Morongo finished in a very creditable second place.

Intermediate and Junior teams travelled to Toorak College for their competition, coming fourth in both divisions.

As well as playing in the Saturday competition, many keen netballers represented Morongo in the Life-Be-In-it Centre on Monday nights.

Our Morongo Netballers proved to be well adjusted to the wintery conditions of Kardinia Park and four of our teams made the Grand Finals. Our Firsts were defeated in a demanding match against St. Leonards Blacks and Morongo 5 had a close loss to Sovereigns. Teams 9 and 12 proved to be too good for their opposition. Team 9 became premiers after a three goal victory and Team 12 managed a four goal win.

Congratulations to these teams and to all teams which made it thtrough to the finals series of matches.

Megan Blackmore was presented with the Geelong Netball Association Best and Fairest Award in her grade and Joanna Funston and Eliza Austin were runners-up in their respective grades. Well done girls!

Again the Staff versus Students match was a highlight of the netball season and after a vigorous and exciting game the students emerged triumphant.

This season has been one of great success for Morongo and all girls deserve recognition for their hard training and dedication. I hope that next year's season is as enjoyable and rewarding as this one has been.

Our tennis teams met with mixed success this year, but we were an enthusiastic group. It was unfortunate that our interschool matches were played in wind, rain and less than favorable conditions for tennis. MUSIC REPORT "I still often think of it in athletic terms - and envy the athletes, their clocked goals, their fixed measurable achievements. If I could leap ten feet in the air or run the hundred in ten seconds flat - that would be an achievement. It could be measured, quantified.

No-one could argue, quibble. Least of all myself." From "Maestro" Peter Goldsworthy.

Like every worthy musician , those from Morongo find it difficult to quantify the undefinable standard which they work to meet.

This year, instead of reaching for a fixed goal, we have concentrated on true musical fulfilment, and the standard of our music has been the most worthy of all.

Sadly, Morongo's first performance of the year took place at the request of the family of Miss Anna Stranieri, the Music Captain of 1985. Morongo was honoured to take a small part in Anna's funeral. The Madrigal Choir sang beautifully in memory of Anna, whom the Music Department remembers with respect and joy.

At the end of Term 1 the VCE girls perfomed very creditably at a recital which displayed the potential for excellent results in the performance CAT. The choirs presented the Introit and Anthem at the Easter Service.

Second term was the time for the magnificent debut of the Jazz Ensemble, featured at the Art and Craft Show. 'A Pleasant Sunday Afternoon', a fundraising concert presented in St. John's Church, Portarlington, was our next engagement.

Before we knew it we were "Puffin' on the Ritz". This year's snazzy production involved the Orchestra playing Broadway and Lloyd Weber, the Goldilocks fairytale told by Kate Michalak and the Orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble's bouncy rock themes, a special choir, vocal solos from Kirsten Honey, Ruth van Leerdam and Mr. Smith, the new unaccompanied vocal quartet and 'Concerto Gross' for three kazoos and orchestra, featuring Mr. Hancock, Miss Batterbury and Mrs. Morrison.

The most ambitious initiative of the year was the Music Camp, with the snow-covered grounds of Blampied being the perfect setting for all the senior musicians to practise feverishly and enjoy each other's company. Mr. Hanan developed 'Pizzicato'. a camp magazine, which I am sure will be a feature of future Music Camps. Enthused after the camp experiences, the String Quartet played very well at the Founders' Day assembly. The term ended with a wonderful Senior Concert.

As third term began, the musicians joined the House Captains and launched themselves into the House Music and Drama Competition. Venters was the victorious House, closely followed by the mighty Roslyn and Harris Houses.

Six senior musicians participated in a thrilling concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Rehearsals of Stravinsky's 'Symphony of Psalms' were exciting and the experience of singing in a 170 voice choir at the Melbourne Concert Hall was unforgettable.

The choirs sang, with their usual reverence at the Annual Church Service but the greatest of all performances was to take place on 14th and 16th September. The works of Vivaldi, including the famous Gloria , for choir and orchestra, were performed at St. John's. Southgate in true Baroque style. This fabulous concert was repeated in All Saints' Church, Newtown, with equal success.

Congratulations to all who made these concerts an experience to remember.

Clearly, this year has been a milestone in Morongo's history, and I was extremely fortunate to be a part of it as Captain of Music.

Success is only possible through the dedication of the music staff, especially Mr. Hancock, and I would like to thank them all for their never-failing support and for the personal interest they take in each one of us. Well done, to the Junior school musicians - we are all very proud of the music you create.To the Jazz Ensemble you have begun a tradition and you must continue strongly into next year building on the foundation you have laid.

And lastly, to all the musicians of 1993. Keep on aspiring to be truly musical and you will reach your standard, however immeasurable.

We came back from the holidays to jump straight into the pool, full of enthusiasm for the Swimming Sports. Ardens girls got down to some very serious swimming and cheering, determined to begin the year with success. We finished in a well-deserved fourth place. Congratulations to Amber Tumour, who was Runner-up for the Year 10 championship, and to all other swimmers, especially those who attempted the butterfly.

From the pool, we went to the athletics track. Once again we finished in fourth place, but we did have a champion, Clare Haylock of Year 9.

Just as we were beginning to wonder if we were doomed to have three Houses ahead of us on every occasion, the House results were announced at the end of the first semester.

Ardens was - not fourth - but first. We may not be sports champions but we certainly are the smartest in the classroom, leading in the academic total.

Third term proved to be busy, with the House Music and Drama Competitions demanding the sacrifice of early mornings and lunchtimes for rehearsals. We have no doubt that our performance was the best but ,unfortunately, the adjudicators did not think so and we were placed equal fifth.

Special thanks to our pianist, Christine Blair and to all who participated in the drama and the small group.

The dreaded Cross Country was the next event on the calendar. We headed for the Barwon: some took a scenic walk and others ran too fast to see any of the scenery.

Congratulations to Clare Haylock (3rd Junior) and Sarah Lamb (4th Senior). There are no prizes for guessing where Ardens finished overall - fourth!

Debating was the next chance to show our skill. Our junior team, consisting of Rebecca Madden, Jodie Day and Amber Tumour, proved that TV needs a clean up and our senior team, Claire Hindmarsh, Tiffany Karlsson and Kylie Moreland lost by two points when trying to prove that law reform is urgent.

I would like to thank all girls for making Ardens such a great House. Everyone is enthusiastic and, with the most House spirit in the school, we always enjoy ourselves, even when coming fourth. This is much more important than winning .

Renowned as one of the fiercest of Houses Brute power Lightning red reactions Formidable looks Amazing grunts ensure that Harrisites get little argument even from Houses twice their size HARRIS has been, and always will be, THE BEST, but since everybody is aware of that fact we, the kind-hearted souls that we are, decided to give other Houses a turn at winning in 1993, tactfully keeping them on their toes.

Beginning with a splash, Harris dived into action at the Swimming Sports. A last minute setback occurred when Kirren Perkins cancelled his training session with our legendary House, but this did not stop us from finishing with some champions: Katrina Butcher ( Runner Up Year 7), Sarah Warrior (Year 8 ) Sarah-Jane Deckert (Runner Up Year 12).Congratulations to the Juniors, who gave me the honour of collecting the Junior Division Trophy. Overall, we finished in fifth place.

With Horatio, Henrietta and Harriet on the sidelines, our athletic ability shone. We pumped our muscles so hard that even Ben Johnson would have drooled! However, modesty was again our key , a truly thoughtful gesture to the other Houses to ensure that they would continue to compete against us in years to come. Fiona Nelson (Year 10) and Sarah-Jane Deckert (Year 12) lost control, leaving their opposition eating red dust, and emerged as Runner Up Champions . We still managed to keep a low profile finishing in sixth place, according to Ian, ready to shock the system next year.

Sarah Jane Deckert From this point on, we showed that there is more to Harris than muscle, knuckling down to work, debating and stamp collecting whilst haunted by the rapid approach of the House Music and Drama Competitions. With the theme Miracles Happen To Those Who Believe how could we go wrong? Not a hair was singed in the candle procession nor an eye turned from the spectacular "Hail, Holy Queen" choir, which stunned the audience into silence. To the Saints' Footy Song the convent team marched to their fate against the Demons.

Mother Superior's (Fiona Nelson) firm words, Don't You Quit , gave the team little hope, although The Nuns (Small Group) did survive to sing 'I Will Follow Him'. We took the Gertrude Pratt Hall by storm and the audience loved every minute of it.

Taking second place was great but the real bonus was to see everyone in the House enjoy every minute of the rehearsals and win the battle of keeping those triangles on our heads.

Those other Houses were beginning to become just a little bit too confident so we decided that the time had come to bring them back into line. The Cross Country was the chosen event and , with little effort, we finished in first place.

To the 194 Captain, be warned. Life for you will be extremely busy. I assure you that warm-up exercises, House meetings, Drama rehearsals, debating, grey hair and premature ageing are well worth every second you will spend in Harris.

When I am gone and forgotten just remember Although it is great to win It is the fun that makes it all worthwhile.

HARRIS LEGENDS you are THE BEST Just make sure everyone else knows that "Not failure, but low aim is a crime".

1993 was for Lawson the year of the Legends. We showed all of the Houses that Lawson is up there with the best.

My captaincy began in 1992 when I had the task of organizing the House picnic.This was a great day : everyone worked on her fitness in an aerobics session and a gym workout. The day was one of relaxation and fun for the whole House.

At the beginning of the year we swam our muscly legs off, finishing third in the close competition. We were fortunate to have a new little fish, Lisa Wright, who was Runner - up Year 9 Champion. Once again, Prue Waayers was Runner -up for the Year 11 championship. Congratulations to all who competed so well in these sports.

The Athletic Sports this year were different. Lawson did not come 1 -a -s -t . We showed the other Houses , with enthusiasm, that Lawson was to be taken seriously.

Throughout the day we really had something to cheer about and the chants and war cries were loud and long. At the end of the competition we were in second place, just behind Roslyn.

The next major event on the Lawson agenda was the House Music and Drama Competitions. We happily sang 'Heal the World' and 'Imagine' and Cassie Stephens recited a war poem. Drama, this year, had many enthusiasts but unfortunately our play 'Mother Courage' had only six parts, so several girls missed the opportunity of being in the limelight. Competition was very close and Lawson gained third place. Congratulations to Tamsin Crocker, Kirstin Honey, Nerissa Kamp, Annabelle Senior, Sue-Ellen Scott and Karen Zeegers, our fine actresses.

Throughout Term 3, on every girl's mind was on the rapidly approaching Cross Country along the banks of the Barwon.

Lawson girls ran with enthusiasm but finished in fifth place.

House Debating was the last of the competitions. Our juniors won convincingly and our senior team lost in a cut throat battle against Robb, the ultimate winners of the Debating trophy.

As I sit here I think about how rapidly the year is coming to a end. Lawson is definitely the best House and it has been a privilege to be House Captain. I wish Lawson the best of luck in 1994 and I am sure that all that House spirit and enthusiasm can be sustained and will grow even stronger.

I had always considered Robb to be the truly superior House in terms of ability, enthusiasm, participation and after only few days at the helm must confess, with the risk of sounding conceited, that my disturbing perceptive skills were, as usual, quite correct.

1993 began with a splash. Eager to show off bronzed bodies, we could be found at the Norlane Pool in preparation for the fast -approaching Swimming Sports. Naturally we were represented well with eventual champions leading the charge for the illusive first prize. Not wanting to show our repertoire of talents too early in the year we graciously accepted fifth place. Quite noble of us, I believe!

Athletics soon followed and I have to admit that the Year 12 girls were desperately trying to think of a novel idea to upstage the sensation that resulted last year when the Year 12s tore down the track on Robb 'bogs' Alas the responsibility was left on my shoulders and I joined the other House Captains in becoming birds. So, with feathers flying, we often broke the tape first, again with some individual champions.

While we may have come fifth in the actual athletics section of the day, in the style and cheering categories, we wonderful Robbites - by our unanimous decision - came first. I'm convinced our priorities were in the right place!

After weeks of rehearsal, the House Music and Drama Competitions were finally upon us. We had carefully synchronized a dramatic presentation encompassing the theme Butterflies don't live in Babylon with our music reflecting emotions associated with exile. On the day everything went perfectly and I was enormously proud of every House member. I had encouraged the girls to try to make the audience cry and that was exactly what they did. I was able to accept the congratulations, on behalf of the House, from several women who successfully ruined their make-up.

Unfortunately the adjudicators were not quite so enthralled with our performance and ranked us fourth.

Of course we did not let this setback dampen the mighty Robb Tammy Grif spirit and we sprang back into action for the Cross Country, Ruth Van Le the event that we all, as true athletes , look forward to each year. Third place was earned by our girls who ran, jogged and puffed their way along the Barwon.

House debating soon followed and with the meanest Robb team seen for years, led by the debating captain, Miss Ruth Van Leerdam, we looked forward to a prosperous battle.

Came finals day and our team argued its way to victory, proving without a doubt that Goldilocks should not have been spanked. We certainly saved our best effort until last and we were justifiably proud of our wonderful debaters.

The enthusiasm and ability that all Robbites possess may not be reflected in the results obtained this year but I am sure that in 1994 this trend will be corrected and Robb will finish where it belongs - in first place.

It has been an honour and a pleasure to lead such a great House.

The first event on our busy calendar was the Swimming Sports in February. There were tremendous efforts from all of our swimmers. Competitors from other Houses found themselves stunned as they choked and spluttered their way through the turbulent wake left by our talented swimmers, especially Sally and Alison who were champions in their respective years. We splashed and dived through the day and the results were well deserved.

A windy day was chosen for the athletics but even the strongest wind could not deter those persevering Roslynites from running, walking, throwing and jumping their way to victory. Congratulations to Kate E., Alison and Olivia who proved to have what it takes to be a success on the track.

Practising for the Music and Drama Competitions began in earnest at the end of Term 2.

The end of the day saw Roslyn placed equal second with Harris, very close behind Venters. Many thanks to Laura, Erin and Kate W. We could not have done without you!

In the House Debating, the Roslyn team of Laura, Erin and Rebecca reached the final. Congratulations to Robb whose team narrowly defeated us, arguing that Goldilocks should not have been spanked.

The best was certainly saved for the last. The Cross Country proved to be a leisurely jog along the Barwon for most -and I must say most -Roslynites. We sprinted past most of our exhausted opponents and finished an overall second.

1993 has been a very successful year for Roslyn. I do not doubt for a second that it is because of the House spirit, determination and team effort. Roslyn has its outstanding sportswomen, fast talkers and musicians but, because every girl believes that she has something to offer the House, Roslyn continues to be a winner. Goodluck in 1994. Thankyou Roslyn for making 1993 such a memorable year for me.

Re-re-award

They come from the world beyond. Exploding in performance like meteorites - code name, Venterites. They puzzled scientists with their ability to adapt to aquatic conditions, to the forces of travel and to life on land. The year 1993 ....scientists endeavoured to explore the evolution of these superior specimens. For each experimental situation created to test these subjects, five groups of guinea pigs were used as control groups to compare and measure the eliteness of these Venterites. The results are set out for your information.

Aquatic conditions - Displayed some difficulty as they struggled to survive in the chlorinated conditions of the chosen pool of water. When diving from heights, salt was lost from surface area of the body causing weakness in the Venterites performance. When travelling at excessive speed through the water Venterites lost control of breathing and involuntary consumption of copious amounts of water resulted. Even though speed of the species was much slower than that of the guinea pigs, enviable style was displayed by the Venterites.

Travel on Land - Two quite different situations were displayed here. Firstly, the Venterites were tested in speed and agility as they travelled marked distances on a circular grass plain, coping with obstsacles along the way. As the soil beneath them cracked with each motion, the Venterites became less steady and their speed decreased as a result. The white, chalky substance used to mark the area proved a problem. As the mass of particles thickened in the atmosphere, the Venterites had to deal with previously undiagnosed chalk allergies. Despite this, the Venterites still puzzled others with their strength and determination and gained third place overall.

A recent second test on land travel reflected the main weaknesses of this species. The Venterites were required to travel along the banks of a river which, in steamy and swampy conditions, they found extremely difficult. Not being used to the wildlife and humans that surrounded them , the Venterites were unable to adapt and their performance reflected disorientation. They finished the "Cross Country" test last but again showed a characteristic style and determination.

Test of temperament - The Venterites have been found to be mild- mannered and they are cool and controlled in any situation. They find it upsetting to debate with others because, it has been found, it is not part of their nature. Two groups were selected from the species, three young ones and three older ones. Neither team wanted to offend the test guinea pigs, who were their opposition, and thus they gladly accepted what the other teams argued.

Musical and dramatic talent - We are no longer puzzled! They can travel on land, through water and through a heated argument by simply staying relaxed and in control. With first place in the most challenging of all tests, we can say confidently that they are musically and dramatically talented.

This is too much ! They are certainly not human!!

They have excelled in all areas. These Venterites were sent to us from the unknown. They have been placed on this earth as role models for all humans. This is a scientific breakthrough.

We must continue to breed this first class species.

SOCIAL SERVICE REPORT Social Service contributions this year have supported the work of many organizations, including the Brotherhood of St Laurence, Red Cross, Lifeline, United Way Food Bank, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Guide Dog Association, Kids Help Line, Community Aid Abroad, Freedom From Hunger and Christian Blind Mission International.

The School community has also responded to major appeals including the Uniting Church SHARE Community Appeal, the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal and the Melbourne City Mission Winter Appeal. To help our students' awareness of the work carried out by the organizations, information about the various groups has regularly appeared in the Bulletin.

Prior to Easter, the Social Service Committee members distributed Easter eggs and cards to the residents of the Grace McKellar Centre during an 'Easter Bonnet Parade'. The response to the Easter egg collection was excellent ; two hundred and sixty-three packages were delivered to the Centre.

The two major fund-raising activities for the year were a Pizza Drive and a Chocolate Drive. The money raised from the Pizza Drive went to the "Concern" Uniting Church Welfare Agency and the Salvation Army Family Welfare Centre to help needy people in the Geelong area. Profits from the Chocolate Drive assisted the Cancer After-Care Group with the purchase of Brachy Therapy equipment for the Geelong Hospital Radiotherapy Unit.

Ronald McDonald House in Melbourne also benefited from the Chocolate Drive.

A Casual Dress Day was held in June to raise money for United Way, to support a variety of health and welfare agencies in Geelong and District.The Boarders participated enthusiastically in door-knock appeals for Red Cross and the Salvation Army. They collected in excess of $1,300.00. Twenty-seven students went without food for forty hours over a weekend in June. They raised an impressive total of $1,255.00 for the annual World Vision Famine Appeal.

During the year blue hat badges were sold for the Peter McCallum Institute along with red noses and badges for the Sudden Infant Death Research Foundation. Students and Staff also had the opportunity to purchase Legacy badges.

The House Used Stamp collection produced approximately 200,000 stamps for the Uniting Church Fellowship Stamp Fund. Christmas gifts were collected in Term 4 for the Salvation Army to distribute amongst the children in Geelong's needy families.

Thankyou to the Committee, students, parents and staff who so generously supported our many Social Service activities during 1993.

NEW CALEDONIA REPORT Our travels started in the school mini-bus. Excitement bubbled in all of us as we chugged up the motorway tothe airport. Then it was time to board the plane. We arrived in the evening, very tired, yet still enthusiasic, despite the rain and humidity with which New Caledonia greeted us.

We hauled ourselves and our overladen suitcases up three floors of the Hotel Mocambo, only to discover a lift later on our way to dinner at 'Pizza Pino". At dinner we had the first test of our French skills, and we discovered the atrocious prices.

The following morning Kate banged loudly on our door calling, in French, for us to get up. At breakfast we were greeted with the delicious smell of fresh bread and croissants, to which we were all to become seriously addicted.

C.R.E.I .P.A.C. was next on our agenda, three hours of French with a half hour break, which we spent in the sun desperately trying to acquire a tan. The remainder of our time was meandered away on the beach, swimming, sunbathing or shopping.

The highlight of the trip was for all of us, I am sure, Phare Amedee, a small island with white sand and crystal clear water. Those who went snorkelling shared the sea with tropical fish, jellyfish and the odd stingray.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and yet beneficial holiday: we all had an enormous amount of fun and improved our French. We would like to thank Mrs. Gasperini and Miss Shields for accompanying us on this fantastic trip.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS Two hundred schools, involving 5,000 students across Victoria, took part in the annual Tournament of Minds.

Morongo entered a Junior and a Senior team in the co operative problem solving activity initiated by the Victorian Association for Gifted and Talented Children.

The Senior team had to solve "The Trial of Mother Goose". Mother Hubbard was sueing Mother Goose, because the cupboard was bare and the poor dog had no bone. The team had eight weeks in which to prepare a court case involving the nursery rhyme characters and meeting all criteria. Five members of the team also competed in spontaneous problem solving.

It was hard work as rehearsals were held three mornings each week, at weekends and during Activities. One timetabled period weekly was also used. The judges praised the team for their very creative script and said it was the funniest script presented. Placings are not given but we finished in the top group in Victoria and ended the term with a great party at Sizzlers. Thankyou to Mrs Lea Wood for a very rewarding and enjoyable activity.

Morongo debating is becoming more and more prominent every year with an increasing number of students joining the group. I will always remember the bus trips to and from venues, and the great way in which all students work together as teams.

1989 marked a great year for Mdrongo. It was the year that Morongo revived its debating teams. Since then, debating and public speaking have become increasingly important in Morongo's life. This year has been no exception. With a large number of new girls signing up to debate at the beginning of the year, trial debates were held at the start of term 1. Teams were decided with one Junior (Year 9) team and one Senior (Year 11-12) team going into the Apex Debating competition, and a Year 10 and two Year 11 teams competing in the DAV competition. During the season, all teams debated with confidence and gained much experience. The Year 10 and two Year 11 teams finished their season winning three of their five debates ,which is a satisfying achievement. The Junior team (comprising almost all new debaters) put in an effort winning two of three debates, and the Senior team debated brilliantly winning all their debates thus far, and, at the time of writing are waiting to debate in the semi-final of the competition.

All teams are grateful for the work and support from the coaches , Ms Shields, Mr Keeley and Mr Hanan.

Congratulations to everyone who took part. In the words of Ben Johnson, 'Talking and eloquence are not the same: to speak, and to speak well, are two things!'

When MLC Sydney came to visit Morongo, debates were held for Years 7 and 8 of both schools. Morongo teams showed their fine talent by winning most of the debates.

House Debating was organized in Term 3. All houses debated strongly with Roslyn and Robb competing in the final. The topic, 'That Goldilocks should have been spanked' led to a very close debate in which Robb were victorious with the negative case.

Public Speaking this year also played a large part in the Morongo community. Christine Pullin, Megan Ford, Belinda Kelly, Kirsty Gibb, Laura Hughes, Tiffany Karlsson and Heidi Roberts all competed in Lions Youth of the Year with Belinda, Laura, and Heidi all winning at their Clubs. Heidi Roberts continued through the rounds to win the Victorian Final. In Hobart, she represented Victoria in the Australian final.

Congratulations Heidi. The final was won by the NSW representative.

Morongo also took part in Rostrum Voice of Youth where Laura Hughes took a second place, and Kelly Hughes received an encouragement award.

This year started off in a very busy way for all girls starting Year Seven at Morongo. We were all nervous, and not sure quite how we were going to make it through the year now that we were juniors at this big school. But believe it or not we have survived and are looking forward to Year Eight.

The first big challenge for all Year Sevens was going to camp at Mt Cole's Cave Hill Creek, where we went canoeing, bushwalking and basically had lots of fun. We soon got to know- each other.

We have been on many excursions including seeing "Boss of the Pool", going to the Melbourne Literature Festival and visiting the Botanical Gardens in Geelong.

We had an exciting week when we had a visit from MLC, Sydney. Most girls billeted a student from Sydney and made some good friendships. We had a fun week, including excursions to Queenscliff and Sovereign Hill.

We played hockey, netball and tennis. We also had some very challenging debates.

Overall, it has been a busy fun year and we have made heaps of friends.

An exciting year has been enjoyed by Year 8s, From sport to music and many debates; June saw four days with the MLC girls, Later a tangle in Fairy Floss whirls; How brightly it burned - the famous lamp, As we sang and played at our first Music Camp.

We went back in time with our Year 8 play, Had lunch with relations on Grandparents' Day, Saw many shows and drama reviews, In House Drama nobody messed up her cues; The Athletics Sports was a day of great fun, Then the Cross Country - how we did run!

Thanks to the teachers whose patience we tested; See you next year, when we return, fully rested.

This year was full of adventure, excitement and new experiences. It began with a week of roughing it in the Victorian Alps. Wollangarra was both mentally and physically challenging, especially as we were the first Morongo girls to endure this primitive lifestyle.

We then moved from the heights of the Alps to the heights of Capitol Hill, Canberra. After taking part in our own miniparliament, we felt ready to run the country. Whilst in Canberra we visited Questacon, The Institute of Sport, The Defence Academy and the High Court. We spent our last night in Canberra on the ice and were lucky enough to see the Canberra Ice Hockey team in training.

Throughout the year we had a lot of fun making dinner for each other, visiting Melbourne and living as girls did in the past at Dame Pennyweather's Academy for Young Ladies.

As well as all the action at the camp and on the excursions, there was plenty of Year 9 action at school. At the Year 9 Social, Aisha put 'Dirty Dancing' to shame. Merryn was off to a stomping start to YMCA at the Lip-sinc. Practice makes perfect as Megan Rickhuss surely knows after putting more than the boat in the water.

We would like to thank Ms Hill for organizing a great program for Year 9. This year, Sarah R. is the only girl who has been in the snow . We look forward to reporting to you all next year, after the Ski Camp.

The 1993 year started off in a very sporty manner and of course Year 10 were performing exceptionally well in tennis, softball, and especially rowing. The Year 10 Firsts and Seconds finished in first place in the final event of the rowing season, the Head of the Schoolgirls. We then ventured into swimming and athletics, where we saw Mel McRae swim like Hayley Lewis and Tash Lindros run like Flo Jo. In winter sports, netball and hockey, several Year 10 girls were in the top squads.

In Term 2 break, five very eager French students ventured to Noumea for a tour, where they practised their skills in the language and even managed to do some shopping.

House Music and Drama monopolized our lives in Term 3. e had many talented girls performing as country singers, footballers and nuns. To end the very busy term many girls tripped off to Mt Hotham with girls from Year 11. Fine skiing skills were shown; special mention to Freya, Chloe and Tash who ended up with crutches and to Amy and the t-bar man.

Other girls went off to Work Experience and had a most interesting time.

Another event which must not be forgotten was the Year 9 and 10 social, where we danced the night away with the guys from Geelong College and St Patrick's.

Between all these exciting events we all managed to do a hard year's work to prepare us for the dreaded VCE.

Through falling lockers and flying food, a brave adventurer into the land of AV3 may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a rare inhabitant. This beastly creature is likely to have fallen asleep just metres from the only working heater.

Its sorry state would have been induced by too much work, stress and precious little fun. A consultation of any good special identification guide will reveal this pitiful creature to be a Year 11 student.

Despite her obvious exhaustion the cause is often quite puzzling. There are those ignorant people who would assume it was only the result of a very demanding academic year, but how wrong they would be! Contributing to her condition are the stresses of downhill skiing, being unscrupulous in a mock court-room, examining the geological coastline of Victoria, surviving the social event of the year, being a critical theatregoer and maintaining her dignity whilst plummeting down a slide for the sake of Science.

Next year's move will probably demand some readjustment.

After all, can we be sure that those predatorial, scowling, II hierarchical heads of school, the Year 12s, are really gone, leaving us the privileges of a 'phone, hot water and a Microwave? If anxiety increases our maturity, then we are nxious enough to relocate from the jungle of AV3 into the anctuary of the Senior Common Room.

Sitting in the Year 12 Common Room did not feel right.

But of course, we were the Year 12.

Surely schooldays couldn't be coming to an end already!

On one hand, this year has been hectic, stressful, demanding and chaotic. On the other hand, we have had a great deal of fun taking part in school activities ranging from House competitions to the mid year dance.

In order to cope with this year, the majorityof us have discovered skills we never knew we had, or we knew we had them but we just could never be bothered to use them.

Year 12 is one year in our lives we will never, never forget.

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS SCIENCE COMPETITION

In 1993, a total of 28300 students in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Fiji and Vanuatu participated in the competition. The aim of the competition is to provide students with a stimulating challenge and comprehensive feedback on their performance.

Students are required to answer questions which cover a range of Science processes and skills.

The questions are designed to enhance everyday classroom learning by providing students with real life problems to solve.

This year 78 girls in Years 7-10 and 15 from Years 5 and 6 entered the competition. The primary entrants all received a certificate of participation and girls from the Senior School gained 36 certificates which included two High Distinctions, 15 Distinctions and 19 Credits.

KINDERGARTEN MORONGO'S EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION UNIT 1993 has been an outstanding year at the Morongo Kindergarten. This year we have been able to provide a wide 3 range of session times to meet the needs of parents and therefore our four-year-old group and both three-year-old zy groups are full. The Kindergarten staff work very closely with the Junior School staff and this liaison is most 4.. evident in the areas of Music, Perceptual Motor Development, Drama and Library. ri * Early childhood education is facing an exciting and challenging time as today's three and four-year-olds are ** capable of achieving more and more in their early learning years. Many innovative approaches together with 4 changes in the structure of the Kindergarten sessions have enhanced the opportunities for these young children to co-operate and socialize across year levels.

4 4, * * There have been many highlights this year. Visits to productions such as Fransiscus Henri, Facial Illusions, Flights * of Fantasy and Circus Maximus and an excursion to the local fire-station were thoroughly enjoyed by all children. * -4( A special end-of-year Perceptual Motor Display and Christmas Concert provided a wonderful conclusion to our * 4. great year. Co-operation and close contact between parents and staff have been enhanced through special * -1-luncheons, Grandparents' Day and Open Day. Parents have also assisted willingly with regular visits each term * and we do value their support and assistance at all times. v 1 .

I was alone at home by myself. I felt scared that somebody * was going to knock at the door or call on the telephone. But, 4c the most scariest thing that happened to me when I stayed 1' home was when I heard cracking noises.

The best part of staying home alone was when my mum came home.

"Mum, can I have my hair cut please?" I asked. "Yes," said Mum, "but I have a feeling this is going to be a strange day."

When we had finished at the hairdressers, something very strange happened. I started to grow little shoots from my scalp! I was so excited, that I fainted!

RUNAWAYS It is Tuesday November the 8th, we are going to be moved again. If you want to know who 'we' are it's me, Andrew, and my sister Jessica Anderson. I'm 15 and she's 8. I've got plain, light brown hair, and a face full of freckles, but Jessica has long, wavy; blonde hair and she's tall for her age. Well, we're being moved to another foster home. We've been to five different ones this year and each time we've been kicked out.

The reason we're in a foster home is because when my mum had Jessica, she couldn't cope with us. (My dad died in a car accident after Jessica was born.) Mum had to send us to a foster home. So here we are and don't want to be moved again, I don't want to be rejected again. It's just not fair! I've decided that Jess and I are going to run away. We could go to that old museum on the outskirts of town. No-one would find us there. People say that a Mad Scientist with bright green hair lived there with his daughter who had purple hair. MY STRANGE GREEN DOG

There was a clown named Fred Who had no nose or head, He went to a party And won a smartie, But the next day he was dead.

One Saturday as I came home from the pictures it started to rain, green slimy rain! I went over to a strange thing in the front yard, and it went "WOOF!" I jumped back shivering to death. HOW THE BROLGAS DANCED A long, long time ago - when the world was just beginning - all of the brolgas were bored and they had absolutely nothing to do but just sit around and talk. So the biggest and most respected Brolga said "Look at us - we have nothing to do and we are bored out of our brains. All we do is sit around and talk about things that aren't very interesting. We must do something about it."

Everyone of the Brolgas agreed that it must be stopped , as they all wanted desperately to do something better than to sit around and gossip all day. In the morning, when the sun just woke up, all of the Brolgas packed their lunches and set off to see the Spirit of the Mountain. When finally they reached the mountain they sent one of the Chief Brolgas to shout out to the Mountain Spirit. Thiegdjung, one of the Head Brolgas, walked up to the foot of the mountain and shouted "We are bored. We have nothing to do. Please help us!"

The Spirit of the Mountain roared and grumbled. All of the Brolgas were afraid and they all started to run away, but the Spirit of the Mountain shouted, "Go, ask the Spirit of the Lake."

The next day the Brolgas again packed their lunches and set out for the Spirit of the Lake. Around middleday (they didn't have the proper use of the language yet) the brolgas came to the lake. This time another head Brolga was chosen because Thiegdjung had been rewarded for his efforts. Gina,cltiuyng was chosen . He walked up to the edge of the lake and cried, "We are bored. We have nothing to do. Please help us."

"All I can do is help you across the lake. Maybe you should see the Spirit of the Sea and see what he says."

"Thankyou" the Brolgas said. So all the Brolgas went back where they came from.

A few days later the Brolgas set out for the Spirit of the Sea. They walked and walked and walked and finally came to the sea. Of course, another head Brolga was chosen .This time it was Ghyheiong. He shouted out "Oh spirit of the sea, we are very bored and we have nothing to do. Please help us or we will all be bored for the rest of our lives."

The Spirit of the Sea answered, "I know nothing except to advise you to go see the Spirit of the Birds; he will always help people." So all the Brolgas walked to see the Spirit of the Birds. When they got there they all shouted at the top of their voices because of wind that had sprung up and there was a lot of notice. The Spirit of the Birds answered by sending the sparkling powerful sun ray that touched their legs. They immediately were happy and danced around in circles. From then on the Brolgas always danced and they never were bored.

DIMENSION The sun beat down relentlessly upon the windswept sands. Silver arrows raced through the coarse grass that fringed the dunes and progressed onto the dense scrub that ran along the whole of the coast.

Mid afternoon. The sun was now passed its highest point but the temperature soared. Amber laughed uncontrollably as she feebly attempted to scramble up a dune to get to the beach. Finally she made it and collapsed in a heap on the summit, and then started to giggle again as the sand gave way under her feet and she tumbled down the other side.

Day after day she repeated this routine, but never tired of it. Amber found it so strange how people tried to fight nature instead of accepting it for what it was -beautiful and unpredictable. She always knew the time would give way, but was never quite sure when.

Amber's eyes combed the beach, the long slow arc that seemed to stretch on forever, disappearing into the horizon.

She searched for anything that seemed alien or out of place .. She turned to look in the other direction ... Wait.

Something was wrong. She whipped around, back to her starting position. What was it? Something was foreign.

Then it became obvious - a lone figure, two miles away she guessed, barely visible.

It seemed stationary. Strange. Where had it come from? Amber was curious. She started to walk., slowly, cautiously at first but then her pace qhickened and she moved quite briskly, her footprints leaving deep impressions in the wet sand behind her.

She felt strange. A peculiar feeling had spread throughout her body, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge; so many questions raced through her head. Why did she feel like this? The figure moved closer.

There on the sand lay the most beautiful shell Amber had ever laid her eyes upon. A wonderful concoction of pink and yellow and white, its harmonizing shape a pleasure to Amber's gaze ... She bent; her hand clasped around it.

So smooth ... She looked up sharply. Where was the figure? Cautiously she straightened her back and legs. Ah, there it was. Amber continued on, and tripped. Too fast, too fast. Sprawled on her stomach she raised her head.

Again the figure had gone. Amber narrowed her eyes. No ,there it was, flat as she was.

Pulling her legs up under her, Amber began again to jog, as did the stranger. Amber dodged a log; the other's movements mimicked hers. Closer and closer they were drawn. The pace increased. What was this? This person a stranger. Dangerous? Maybe. Five hundred metres now, the gap between them closed. One hundred now.

What? The figure was featureless. Amber did not notice, did not distinguish ,not consciously. So close now, the deep rasping breathing was mingled with her own. Amber's eyes widened as neither girl slowed, and then, straight through her she stepped, both girls feet touching the same ground. Straight through the plain of reality, to the opposite dimension.

A high pitched breaking of crystal seemed to echo through the dunes at this moment, then ... nothing.

Amber blinked, her eyes adjusting. She dropped the beautiful shell she had found. The beach looked different, the colours not right. She turned her head to the sea, and gasped. The water ... it was blue, not orange.

POMPOUS FROG (with apologies to I R McLeod) I'm a proud frog, a pompous frog, a frog with seductive looks; I'm a lazy frog, a forceful frog, wallowing in brooks; I'm a leading frog, a respected frog, with disciples at my feet; I love to sit and laze around on my stylish lilypad seat.

I'll never be a meek frog, one that is polite, A cringing frog, a cowering frog, hiding out of sight, Not for me the sidelines, a "no-one" in the crowd, But marvelling looks, and many stares, and powerful, and mighty, and proud.

Not for me the normal life, working all day long, Some frogs may enjoy this, but for me it all seems wrong, 0 mine is but an easy life, a perfect life, the best, Lazy skies, and lazy sun, and days of endless rest.

BLOOD IN THE SAND

Ben was a young aboriginal boy. He had dark curly hair and hazel eyes. Ben was 12. I saw the cricket ball hurtling towards the window. I was transfixed; the ball came closer, closer, then bang! All I saw Kim Goldsmith was a huge crack across the window. It started to shatter into Year 10 tiny pieces of glass. One by one, the pieces fell like dominoes.

The sun's ray's caught the fragments; they looked magnificent.

Then there was nothing. Just disaster on the floor.

MY LIFE AS A TEENAGER The day you become a teenager it seems the world is against you, and your parents seem as if they have just come from another planet.

The first rule of being a teenager is: your parents are always wrong and you are always right.

When you are a teenager it is as if you are trapped in a box that is slowly, but surely closing in on you. It is just about to squash you when you turn ... 18.

Life is one big waiting game. When you are a child you can't wait until you are a teenager, then you wait till you're 18, the wonderful age when you get your driver's license, can get married, legally drink and buy cigarettes.

Turning 18 means freedom. You have reached the top, but the five years between 13 and 18 are agony, or so I am told. Being a teenager is not all it's cracked up to be.

Teachers don't seem to understand that you have better things to do than three pages of maths homework (like watching television).

Teenagers are also great complainers.

Our household is terrible on a Saturday night. Dad is complaining about the television stations putting the footy and the soccer on at the same time, Grandma is complaining about her arthritis and the price of dog food, my brother, who is ten, is complaining about a lost football boot, Mum is complaining about our complaining and I complain about whatever I can. I wonder how families with two teenagers or twins cope. My parents say one teenager is bad enough and the day Jason turns 18 they're quitting parenthood. Basically, adults expect teenagers to act like adults yet they treat us like children. I think that being a teenager is just a crash-course in adulthood.

Being a teenager is not all bad; going to parties, taking holidays and doing all the things teenagers are supposed to do, are some of the highlights.

I can write all the essays I want, complain as much as I like, but I'm going to be a teenager for another five years, so I'd better make the most of it ....

SECURITY I grew up in a small coastal town called Marlo. As a kid, I had a lot of problems - boys, parents, illnesses. I never really liked Marlo. Everyone knew everything about everyone and we soon were made into gossip if we were a little different from others. But one thing I did like about this town was the beach - well, my little spot there, anyway .It was a place where nobody else went ,which is why it was so special. I knew, if I needed to think, nobody would interrupt me.

This place was very warm in the day and really made me feel secure. It was a cliff, and I would sit and dangle my feet over it. Splashes of water would often spray my feet and legs and the sound of the waves gently rippling into the edge of the cliff was very peaceful. But at night it was the place I feared most.

One night I needed to get away, so I walked to my spot. It was very frightening. I couldn't imagine how something so calm could become so vicious and angry. I looked over the cliff where waves were dashing and crashing ferociously.

Against the rocks spray hit me in the face and waves came over the edge making it slippery to stand. It was dark and nobody could could hear me screaming.

THE CAT ATE MY GYMSUIT! Marcy thought herself a blimp, She thought people would call her a wimp, Until one day a teacher came, Ms Finney was her name, She made Marcy feel really good, And helped her make a tasty pudd: Marcy thought it was really great, She ate it all, even the plate.

I was just about to turn around and leave, when something struck me. My spot was just like me. In the day it was calm, hiding all of its problems, but in the night, everything that had been bottled up came out all at once. I don't know why, but this reassured me.

I've never been back to my spot. Something told me not to.

Perhaps it was instinct or maybe it was fear. Or was it that I never again felt the need?

PROTEST The market place was crowded. People good humouredly pushed, climbed and shoved to reach cheap silver chains, large straw hats and talentless paintings. There were people of all ages milling around, spending their spare time and money at the market on a warm, Sunday afternoon. With purchases made, families, singles and couples would drift away to the shady trees and sit on the grass. All sense of urgency was gone. The children continued tirelessly to dart through the crowd, with stained knees and sauce spilt over their T-shirts. On a far corner an enormous man bellowed the prices of juicy oranges, in a heavily accented voice. Hot, greasy chip smells mingled with imitation French perfume and the Begonia blossom from the nature strip. These scents were lifted and carried down the closed street, attracting an eccentrically dressed passer-by.

Her hair was long and black and shiny, worn loose about her face. The thinnest of material had been used in making her ankle-length purple smock, its hem meeting the top of heavy black army style boots, leaving no skin visible. Janis Joplin's bawdy voice was audible, if muffled, as it emerged from her walkman. A graffitied canvas backpack swung around her finely boned shoulders as she gracefully sauntered towards a milliner's stand.

The milliner, a sharp-eyed fellow, leaned back on his wooden chair, content to watch potential customers claw through the piles of berets, baseball caps and fancy dress hats. Accordingly his voice didn't join in with the colourfully toned rivalry being shouted by the various merchants. The newcomer negligently rifled through the assortment, pausing at a black, velvet covered bikie's hat and then continuing. With a frown of discontent she pulled out a brown, furry creation. It was really too baggy to be called a beret, but no other term described it. The hideous colour had not attracted her to it, rather its material. Greenie and Animal Protectionist were not terms she favoured, she preferred to give herself a softer title, usually, Conscientious Objector. It seemed a moral thing to do, to protest to the milliner the fact that the beret she held in her hand, was not imitation, but real animal fur.

Like a swimmer preparing to dive, she paused, then she grasped the hat and theatrically turned to face the crowded road. No props were necessary, but had she had one, it would have been a soapbox.

"Tell me", she loudly demanded of an elderly man, "do you side with animal haters and murderers? And you, I see you're a family man, and you ..."

Flamboyantly she gestured and convincingly she spoke. A few minutes after the start of her tirade, dozens of people had gathered around, some starting to murmur and point accusingly at the spluttering milliner, who was ineffectively trying to be heard.

"Wait," bellowed a barrel chested man, "let him speak". He pointed an accusing finger at the quivering merchant.

The red faced milliner opened and closed his mouth several times, as they stood, watching and waiting, some with hands on hips.

Deciding actions were better than words, he lunged forward from over the bench and snatched the object of controversy from the excited woman's hand. Hastily he turned it inside out and pointed gloatingly at a small, black label.

"Look, look!" he cried. As a body, the crowd leaned forward and peered. "Here," cried the milliner, thrusting the beret to the barrel-chested man, "read it."

The man took it and squinted his eyes to haltingly read from the faded letters on the label, " .... Chic Creations .... one hundred percent acrylic/nylon"!

DECISIONS The light streaming in is inviting. The red, dark, flow of hot lava is threatening. I am standing in the middle of both places, ready to plunge into the dark side. Something is stopping me, but I don't know what. With my family dead, and my town ruined, there is nothing to live for. Life down there cannot be any worse than it is now.

The slide going down is welcoming me like a tongue, ready to devour me. I look up again, at the hope and new possibilities.

I sit calmly, but my feelings are in a whirlpool. There is a small crevass where I entered. I can see the houses outside.

Only rubble remains after last weeks bombing, as the Russians will not give up. Small children are running, crying for help, and ducking for shelter. I want to run out there and help them, but am afraid of being too late, watching them die.

I walk closer towards the entrance, and look back. I realise life is a challenge. Heaven can wait, but Hell would not be a place for me. I run out to help the children.

A XYDE ISSUE We continued down the dark, icy tunnel. The whole place gave off a cold threatening feeling. Everything was frozen, and occasional rays of light bounced off the ice, only to be engulfed by blackness. We had been travelling for over a week through this seemingly endless tunnel, searching for some clues as to where Jase had been taken.

Poor Jase. He was such a great friend - always cracking jokes and always being there. Life without him was unimaginable. We had to save him. We would probably laugh about this when we got home. I could just imagine him saying that it is the man who is meant to rescue 'the damsel in distress', not the girl rescuing the man. Then he would say something about not knowing what the world was coming to with all these equal rights. Guys are always meant to be the heroes, he always says. We'll have a lot to talk about when we get home. If we get home.

If. 'Look'. Jahk pointed to some tracks along the ice. He started to get excited. 'They must have come this way.

These marks would have been made by Xyde and his men carrying their supplies on the toboggans!'

'Yes!' I yelled. Finally we had a trail to follow. It was strange seeing Jahk so excited about finding something that would help Jase. His main worry was defeating Xyde to save his own world. I was worried only about rescuing Jase, whereas he had all of the people of his world to worry about. As soon as we found Jase we would be out of this world and back into our own. We would have to leave Jahk and his people to fight their own war. It was the only way. We were involved in this war because for some reason, Jase and I were pulled into it. It would be hard to let go of this place; we had made so many friends back in the villages, but now that we knew how to get out, we had to move as soon as we could to find each other. What on earth Xyde would want with Jase was beyond me, but we had to find him.

I stumbled against the hard ice wall. We had been following tracks for about four weeks and my strength was leaving me. My breath was warm against the ice, but the cold inside me was overpowering. If we didn't find Jase soon, I could die. On that thought I heard a gasp from Jahk. He turned around and cautioned me to me quiet. I crept up beside him and looked over the clump of ice we were behind. There it was. Xyde's towers. Jase was inside there somewhere. The place seemed deserted. We could see only two guards. I knew Jahk would be able to handle them. He nodded and crept around the side of the ice. When the guards weren't looking, he ran to the wall then jumped out and ruthlessly slit one's neck. Then, when the other advanced, one sword stroke from Jahk ended his life. He signalled for me to follow.

I ran out and we entered the main tower. No one was around. Other than those two guards, there was no-one else at all. A sob started to rise from my throat. It couldn't be. We had come this far. He had to be there. I started to panic and wildly rushed around, searching every room of the tower. Soon, there was only one storey I hadn't covered and that was the very top. I climbed the stairs and opened the first door. Something glinted in a solitary ray of light. I picked it up. It was the chain I had given Jase last Christmas. He would nevertake that chain off unless, unless something had happened to him.

"N000000!" I screamed. I rushed next door. The sight made me freeze and I could not breathe. A wave of disbelief passed over me. I shook my head and backed into the door, trying to get away from the sight in that room. My life was over because Jase was dead.

I began to thrash my head against the brick wall. Wherever Jase went, I went, and I could think about only what I did not get to tell him before - before he died. Blood dribbled from my head and the pain of the wound made me bang my head even harder against the wall until blood gushed from it. Slowly I felt the life go out of me as I slumped to the floor, holding Jase's chain.

'Wake up, stupid! You're choking me!' That voice was familiar. I opened my eyes and found myself staring into the eyes of my class mates. Someone was holding a towel to my head, and I felt the throbbing pain I closed my eyes again and tried to rememb er . I looked at my hand. Jase's chain was still in it, except Jase was still wearing it. lase!' I screamed.

'Settle down, settle down,' he said.

'What happened?' I asked.

'You tell me,' he said. 'You started thrashing about in your chair, then you got up and started banging your head against the wall and screaming something. That's how you hurt your head. I think your imagination is a bit too realistic. You are only meant to write the stories, not act them out.'

He pointed to the paper on my desk.

across the room from the slightly opened curtains and danced along the girl's back as she lay on pillow. Her body jerked spasmodically and an ugly rasping noise came from her throat as she op4he flow of tears and control her breath. She was at an age when all that mattered was what her clothes, of her room and especially of her looks.

The quilt on the bed was never straight, nor was her room ever very tidy for it was her refuge from the outside world, and she kept it as she liked it.

She was almost calm now, her breathing regular and only the occasional sob escaped from her lips when the pressure in her mouth built up so much that it was not possible for her to stifle it. Her hair hung down over the her face, wet with the tears of pain she had just shed. She sat up and aecidently caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. The blue of her eyes stood out dramatically against the red surrounding them and she looked so funny that even in her misery she couldn't help laughing to herself about how she looked. Misery definitely doesn't become me, she thought.

Her head cleared and finally she was thinking clearly about what had happened, about herself, her so-called friends and her life. She wished one of them were here, that one of them knew her well enough to see that she was upset. But at the same time she didn't want any of them to know they had upset her. She didn't like to think that they could reduce her to this so easily - that they had so much power over her.

It had been as if they had all hated her.

It was the feeling of loneliness that hurt more than anything. There was no one she could talk to. She ti°an ted to tell someone, just one person, how she felt, but was afraid of the reaction so she didn't dare. There was no one she could rely on always to be there, to listen to how she felt, to tell her what to do and to put her needs ahead of theirs. She was alone in the world.

LIFE CYCLE The wilderness of the mountains, was nothing short of breathtaking. Streams of cool icy water, trickled over the rocks and sent a fine spray of water into the beams of filtered sunlight, flashing a brilliant array of colours. Birds and animals flitted through the thick snowgum forest, looking out at us from crevices, trees and burrows, always one step ahead of man. The smell of eucalyptus was strong and fresh, making it easy and pleasant to breathe in the invigorating aroma. In summer, high up above the snowline, you would find the old man grazing his herd of cattle on the snow grass plains of the high ridges. He always wore his bushmans attire. His long sleeved cotton shirt rolled up to his elbows, the moleskins snug on his hips, held firm by his old leather belt with the essential pocketknife strapped to it. His RM Willaims elastic sided boots were the only suitable boots to wear in the high country, and Jack blended into his surroundings as though the bush and he were one.

He had the world at his feet and the heavens within his reach. He and the mountains were bonded together, and nothing could tear them away from one another.

The old man leaned back against his swag, the glow of the fire flickered shadows over his face. He thought back to the time when the ground, the trees, and the sky were the only home he knew for months on end. He would travel by the stars; the Saucepan and the Southern Cross were his friends, who made sure he would never become 'bushed'. His upper lip curled and revealed a toothy grin as he realised that ,despite the long time he had been away from this magical kingdom, nothing ever changed up here in the high country.

To the other bushmen, Jack is the God of the mountains. He understood and respected the land as few other men had been able to do. He rode with careless abandon, utterly fearless in the saddle. Every year his whip echoed through the rocky crags of the mountain ridges as he brought his cattle down from the higher peaks, before the snow set in.

His horse, Jack had saved as a young colt from a brumby herd. He'd found him standing next to his dead mother, nudging her to get up, and screaming a shrill neigh to the sky in bewiderment and panic. Jack had patiently and skilfully broken him in to be the envy of every stockman in the bush, as a good stockhorse is the most highly regarded possession on the mountain. The robust chestnut had relentless courage and stamina. He would work for his beloved master beyond the point of exhaustion, until blood was trickling down his side from the spur digging into his soft, warm, flesh. He was a hardy surefooted animal with a kind, honest eye and a proud carriage of his noble head.

Jack recognised that his eighty-seven years is insignificant in the eternity he sees as he sits under the veil of stars in front of the fire, but his leather like skin shows the years.

The world around him is completely silent but for the crackling of the fire as golden sparks fly out into the night.

He pulls out his tin of Log Cabin and rolls a cigarette with effortless skill and expertise. Within reach, he gently places next to his boots, the carefully crafted plaited hatband he is working on. He wriggles down into his swag, which envelopes him immediately with warmth and security.

Dawn breaks, and the first golden beams of sunlight pierce through the heavy mist onto the icy stream. Grey ash is all that's left of the fire. The old man's horse has, as usual stayed close never losing sight of him. When the sun is quite high in the sky, there is still no movement from the old stockman. The devoted animal carefully approaches his companian and nudges him gently. His blood freezes as his velvet nose touches not comforting warmth, but an icy cold hard figure, exactly the same as his mother had felt all those years ago. It is time now to go back to his own kind.

FEELINGS The fresh, cold night air blew in my face, water crashed against the cold, stone wall spraying whatever water was left over. As I sat on a big, wet rock I felt lonely and cold, and the feeling of danger was sometimes exciting.

I glanced around the sea to see what was flashing in my face. It was a lighthouse , way out on a cliff's edge. All this sight and sound brought shivers down my spine.The pulling and the drawing of water back to the ocean took with it shells, seaweed, and a few empty coke bottles. As the water splashed on to the wall, the water trickled out of the holes and craters made by wind, rain and water splashing constantly against the wall.

The sky was blackened by thunder clouds. The water began to stir, and there was a slight rumble in the distance.Suddenly the storm had come. The thunder was just above me: the lightning hurt my eyes as it flashed frequently lighting up the whole sky. The rain was hard and felt like needles, not drops of water. All this brought many feelings to me - danger, fear, and nervousness of what was going to happen next in this dangerous but beautiful sea.

THE WILDERNESS We clambered over fallen tree-trunks to explore the untouched scenery, It felt as if we were the only people on earth. Amongst the wide expanses of bush the birds were crying above us.

Possums and other small animals scurtled around the trees.

As the camp-fire roared before us, The ice-cold air gripped us, We huddled in our sleeping bags, And the wind whipped through the cracks in our small tents.

Exhausted, we fell asleep.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT 1993 has proven to be another busy year for the Old Collegians. I am indebted to all members of the Committee of Management for their enthusiasm and energy in the organisation of our numerous activities throughout the year. My thanks also go to the six Branch Executives for creating opportunities for their members to meet and when possible, contribute financially to the association.

I consider it fortunate that our Association holds such close links with the School. We are grateful for the ongoing support received from their Administrative and Development Office staff.

One of the highlights in the life of the Old Collegians is the strong support we receive from Miss Shaw, Miss Brookshaw, many past staff members and our current Principal Mrs Judy Watt. Their frequent attendance at Old Collegian functions and reunions is greatly appreciated by us all. We are fortunate to have a Principal who continues to encourage our involvement in the life of the School. Mrs Watt is always keen to consider and develop new ideas which maintain and strengthen links between the Old Collegians and the school community.

I hope you enjoy reading the specific reports which follow. From reading them you may come to understand the extent to which the Committee and Branches have worked for and on behalf of all Old Collegians during 1993.

REUNIONS

This year we have experienced an increase in the number of reunions held. School leavers from 1985, '86, '87 and '92; the 1970 Year 10 group, 1963 Matriculation group and the annual 5 year reunion was held for the 1950-'55 Intermediate (Year 10) students. Our sincere thanks go to Margaret Hiddleston who has so capably handled the role of reunion liason person.

Congratulations to all the reunion co-ordinators for what often proves to be mammoth task.

BRANCHES

Our six Branches continue to play a vital role in providing opportunities for past students to re-establish contact with old school friends, to hear about latest developments and events both at School and within our Association.

This year, several of our Branches have discussed ways of increasing attendances at the A.G.M. and will introduce these ideas for 1994. We are the only member school of the Combined Old Girls Association (twenty three member schools) who have Association branches. I believe they deserve all the support we can give them. School life was enriched by the presence of boarders and I believe our Branches play an equally significant role in the life of our Association. It continues to be both a priority and pleasure for committee of management members to be present at the Annual Meetings of Melbourne, Goulboum Valley, Western District and Wimmera Branches. Unfortunately, it was not possible to attend the S.A. and Canberra A.G.M's. However, personal contact was made during the year with these two Branches.

FOUNDERS DAY:

This has become an Annual event which is well represented by Old Collegians. This year Claire Darby (Head Prefect 1971) as guest speaker gave a thought provoking address which focused on the challenges confronting the working mother. This special assembly was followed by a light luncheon in the dining hall where Liz Grundell (Richardson) once again excelled herself with her magnificient and creative floral arrangements. Our thanks also go to Helen Hill (Darby) for her contribution to the organisation of the luncheon.

GARDEN OF ST. ERTH

A wonderful day was experienced by those Old Collegians and friends who took part in the Garden of St. Erth visit. On arrival, Ken Allen, in the absence of its owner Mr. Ton Garnett, ex Headmaster of Geelong Grammar School, gave an interesting talk on the history and layout of the gardens. Our special thablcs go to Jan Knight (Anderson) for organising this day and for her great idea of making it a bus trip.

MEMORABILIA:

We now have a refreshing new range of items for sale. Some bear the Old Collegians insignia whilst others have the Foundation lamp and ivy. The latter insignia enables items to he purchased for friends and relatives who may not have had direct involvement with Morongo.

New memorabilia includes: full length cotton aprons (calico and bottle green) fridge magnets. notelets, garden kneelers - also suitable for softening the seats at the cricket, football and tennis! Special thanks to Liz Grundell (Richardson), Jeanette Middleton (Potter), Pam Warland (Robertson), and Liz Taylor (Chapman) for taking on the organisation of these items.

OLD COLLEGIANS GIFTS TO THE SCHOOL

Since our last report we are pleased to acknowledge items which have been purchased for the School. Several of the gifts have been made possible through the combined gle nerosity of a number of Old Collegians and individual Branches whilst others have been purchased through funds raised throughout the year. These include a Double Bass, Foyer light, six replacement House Banners, library books, two plant urns for the front foyer, an autosketch for the Graphics Department, six microscopes and two "Mary Guthrie" roses. We are also grateful to those Old Collegians who contributed to the following funds: A.C. Harris, Joyce Alexander Memorial, the Rose Garden, Driveway and the Library fund.

In completing my three year term of office I wish to acknowledge that the achievements we have made have been due to a team effort. Man• members have taken on the role of coordinator of a particular area. This has helped in spreading the work load and enabled us to appreciate the many talents which exist within our committee. I am indebted to all committee members for supporting me in my role as President. I have considered it a privilege to have served our Association in this capacity.
