Fitzroy Football Club's life has eaded as the Lions prepare to ruerge with Brisbane to form the 'Brisbane Lions'. The AFL Commission decided not to allow a Fitzroy-North Melbourne merger. This leaves the competition with one less club, and with the possibility of Hawthom-Melbourne merger, could see AFL fans have to get used to &e eigth finals system change in just over 20 years. The AFL and Brisbane have paid all of Fitzroy's match payments.

With the AFL deciding to cancel Fitzroy's licence, it has created 'unprecedented chaos' as the entire system will have to be adjusted, along with match points, percentages, Brownlow voting, the flxture and TV and radio broadcasts.

Beach Volley Ball Last year Perth's Kerrj Pottharst and Brisbane's Natalie Cook were ranked eighth in the world in the booming sport ofbeach volleyball. Early on Sunday afternoon (28 July 1996) they won the bronze medal after defeating America's Linda Hanley and Barbara Fontana, in two sets, 12-11 and 12-7, in a match that lasted well over two hours.

Their emotions could not be held back as Pottharst yelled "I can't believe it, I can't believe it, " before embracing Cook in what was a highly emotional time.

It was a veiy close match, with the Yanks leading Jed 11-9 in the first set.

Pottharst put their win down to a tough mental approach.

"It's such a mind game out there, " she said.

In a moving opening ceremony, despite problems with moving the athletes from Fulton County Stadium and into the Olympic Stadium, Australia's Dawn Fraser was honored, along with US great, Carl Lewis, as an Olympian of the Century at the Centennial Olympic Games. These Olympics are the biggest yet, and let's hope that Sydney can go one better.

A number of athletes were injured whilst getting on and off the shuttle bus service, which resulted in 17 athletes missing their events.

But strong hearts pounded and eager faces beamed messages of hope and high expectation behind our flag-bearer, Andrew Hoy. Then, several hours later, former US boxer, Muhammed Ali, now suffering from Parkinson's disease, lit the Olympic torch.
