GUIDE TO PRIDE Cathedral City 2026

DAVID ARCHULETA

CELEBRATING A DECADE OF PRIDE

Welcome to the official 2026 Guide to Pride Cathedral City! This year, we mark a monumental milestone for Cathedral City LGBT+ Days presented by Agua Caliente Casinos: the 10th Anniversary. As California’s first Pride event of the year, Cathedral City does more than just kick off a season; it sets a tone of resilience for the entire Coachella Valley.

WHY WE SHOW UP NOW

Let’s be candid: this year’s celebration feels different. We are living through a time where the progress we once thought was permanent feels increasingly fragile. Across the country, we are witnessing a concerted effort to roll back hard-won protections and erase the very identities that make our community beautiful.

When rights are under fire, visibility is our greatest tool. Celebrating Pride in 2026 isn’t just about a party; it’s a radical act of refusal. We refuse to be quieted, we refuse to be hidden, and we refuse to let the next generation believe they have to apologize for who they are. Cathedral City stands as a sanctuary where equality isn’t just a goal, it’s the foundation.

WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS: WHAT NOT TO MISS

The 10th Anniversary Kickoff (Friday, March 6): We begin at City Hall with the Pro-Equality Rally and the official Pride Flag Raising. As the sun sets, look to the skies for the return of the Pride Drone Show, a luminous reminder that our light cannot be dimmed.

CommUNITY Strong Walk (Saturday morning, March 7): We start the day with purpose. The inaugural CommUNITY Strong Walk benefits the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), turning our celebration into tangible support for those fighting on the front lines for our rights.

The Festival & Headliner (Saturday afternoon/evening, March 7): The Community Amphitheater comes alive with food and drinks, artisan vendors, and a powerhouse lineup on the Stonewall Stage. We are thrilled to welcome David Archuleta as this year’s festival headliner, alongside the ICONIC DRAG show presented by one eleven with Morgan McMichaels and RuPaul’s Stars, and the all-female band Pulp Vixen!

The Famous Bed Race & Parade (Sunday, March 8): It wouldn’t be LGBT+ Days without the “most epic race of the year.” Cheer on the decorated beds and outrageous costumes as they dash down Avenue Lalo Guerrero in front of City Hall.

A LEGACY OF INCLUSION

As we look back on ten years, we are reminded that this weekend celebration is a tribute to our history and a bold statement about our future. In a world that often asks us to dim our lights, Cathedral City chooses to shine brighter.

We invite you to walk bold, sing out loud, and celebrate with us. Our presence is our power.

Perceptions amuse us and delude us. We may think we know someone, we categorize them in our minds, yet we miss the core essence of who they really are. But David Archuleta is breaking the facade and bringing fans into his romantic realm of reality.

Let’s dive deeper with David Archuleta.

He maneuvers the turbulent waters of fame, religion, and sensuality so spectacularly swimmingly. After establishing himself as the boy-next-door on American Idol, Archuleta publicly identified as queer and watched his church support float away. But his resilience is robust, his talent is as mighty as the Mississippi, and his voice surges with sensuality.

“It’s not like a full on sex EP,” Archuleta coos humbly. “but I feel like I was just being present in my body.”

Indeed, his sinewy frame hypno-

tizes viewers in various videos from the deluxe edition of Earthly Delights Archuleta soars like an angel, grooves like a god, and seduces the audience every time he gazes into the lens. “I made room for myself to grow with this EP and allowed myself to navigate the flirty nature of just living. Living life and feeling confident.”

Downshifting into aw-shucks mode, Archuleta admits, “I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t know I was capable of these emotions. I didn’t know it was in me, so I was proud to discover it and play in that place with Earthly Delights.”

Authenticity is the ultimate aphrodisiac, and Archuleta flexes his truth like a peacock broadcasting its brilliance. By raising his voice, he silences the villains… but finding that voice was no simple task. “I have always wanted to sing in Spanish, from the very first album I released when I was 17. I recorded my song Crush in Spanish and I was like I would love to

release this, but for whatever reason my record label didn’t want to and they shelved it.” Putting a personal punctuation to his point, Archuleta continues, “They didn’t wanna spend their time or money investing in my Latin side.”

Fast forward to the queer-and-now. “I’m just in a place where, you know what? Why not do it? Let’s explore a little bit. I’m Hispanic. Half of my day, I’m around Hispanic people, so it’s a part of me. I’m like, let’s do Spanglish. That’s how I live my life anyways; I live a very Spanglish life day to day. It’s about being yourself. That needs to come out.”

So Archuleta teamed up with Colombian sensation Esteman to create a bilingual version of his barnburner Crème Brûlée. The lyrics swirl effortlessly between languages, orientations, and delectable metaphors, equating the titular dessert with a heaping helping of eroticism. Oh no, there goes all of your clothes. Oh yes, you will go loco for Crème Brûlée.

Gyrating on down the playlist, we discuss another pop confection from the EP: Dulce Amor. Part love ballad, part overwhelming obsession, and all Archuleta, this velvety concoction massages your eardrums before working its way into your brain, heart, and beyond.

Archuleta gushes about his inspiration for the swooning single. “Blue is, I feel, one of the greatest albums ever made. It’s so expressive, it’s just so well done and, funnily enough, in the studio, there was a painting of Joni Mitchell. I was like, ‘That Blue album was lifechanging’ and I was like, ‘Can we just say that? Can we just mention her?’ I feel like she’s worth mentioning.”

So, Archuleta worked with his creative team to rework the lyrics accordingly.

“We reference some of her most iconic songs ever from that album. They talk about yearning and longing for something, cause it’s like ‘I could drink a case of you’ or like ‘I wish I had a river I could skate away on.’ It was just longing. That was symbolism with that line choice, just to say you want this person, you’re craving them, they’re so sweet. They’re Dulce Amor, it’s a sweet love that you’re craving and you want more of.”

And then something magical happens: David Archuleta breaks into song and bursts our interviewer into joy.

“You’re my favorite place, El Pescador. End of day, been two weeks, and nothing tastes the same. You’re my favorite record, Joni Mitchell Blue. Wish I had a river, had a case of you.”

When I gay-gasp at the fact that a gold record selling, umpteen awardwinning artist just crooned spontaneously, Archuleta responds in kind. “I didn’t even realize I sang. Did I sing?”

Um, heck yeah you sang.

“Oh my gosh!” exclaims Archuleta. “My friends always tell me that. They’re like, ‘oh I love it when he just randomly started singing.’ I’m like I don’t even realize I’m doing it. Holy cow.”

Bucket list item: accomplished.

And he’s gonna sing to you tooLGBT+ Days are coming to Cathedral City, California from March 6th to March 8th and Archuleta is the capitalP Proud headliner. “I look at Pride as celebratory, so for me it’s really fun to have a celebratory take on a show, ‘cause I’m known for singing a lot of ballads and being a vocalist, which is what I do, but it’s also fun to just have dancing. I love to dance, I love to go out, I’m Hispanic so it just feels so good and therapeutic to be somewhere where you can just let your hair down and just let loose and not worry about what other people think and just dance.”

For fans who yearn to hear the charttoppers that made David Archuleta famous, you’re in luck. He’s not dancing away from his roots but rather cultivating them into a groovy garden that flourishes into a towering queer monument to his range. “I just hope people come ready to have a good time and celebrate and party and I might throw a more emotional song in there, so they’ll have that too, along with the fun stuff. Some dancing. Some choreography.”

Variety and inclusiveness pulse through every sentiment Archuleta utters. Even as he paints a picture of a disco utopia, he stops to consider the introverts out there who may not instinctively crave the rave scene. “If you don’t like to socialize, at least you could be there and just know like ‘hey all these people are celebrating who I am’ and that’s really beautiful.”

Add writer to his resume as well. That’s right, Archuleta has triumphantly documented his rift with the LDS Church in his new memoir Devout: Losing My Faith to Find Myself. The achingly honest book delves into sensitive subjects like “Me leaving my community that I loved, it was my tribe. It was my safe place. It was where I thought I could belong to an extent.”

Archuleta was drowning in doubt before he had his empowering epiphany. “I realized that no, I don’t have any other choice. I have to do this. I have to just be honest with myself and be

true. Even if that means walking away from the community that I love.”

Devout gives fans more than just a riveting account of their fave idol’s rise to fame and his controversial comingout story; it also gives them the keys to unlock their own destiny. “You have to have so much strength to be able to walk away from something that was your entire support system into nothing, essentially.”

Despite how confident he may sound, Archuleta admits that when he penned the book, “I didn’t have the whole big picture, necessarily, but I felt like I had enough.”

We ask what advice Archuleta would give his younger self and he delivers a heartfelt response. “The world you’re in right now is just a prelude. You’re not going to find all your answers right now and that’s alright and it’s OK to challenge the world.” Speaking directly to the magnificent misfit in all of us, he continues, “Don’t let this shock you, but you’re different and you don’t have to be so afraid… I know you’re afraid of disappointing God, but God is going to celebrate that you see yourself as he sees you and how he created you to be.”

But Archuleta rises above the noise to create a next-level connection with his audience.“You’re there to celebrate being you, being queer, being part of the LGBTQ plus community and how much we’ve had to overcome and how much we’ve had to make space for ourselves to have this, to have support systems and to be able to celebrate.”

And now it’s time to strut our solidarity at Cathedral City LGBT+ Days, an outpouring of acceptance, diversity, and camaraderie. “It’s essential to our society to have a sense of community where you feel empowered. If you feel safer, you feel stronger and more motivated, and it’s just nice to know you’re not alone.”

Understatement alert! Loneliness has no place at this plucky Pride festival, which includes a rousing roster of events like drag contests, a drone show,

and the infamous bed race. That’s right, watch celebrities and silliness tear down the street via ornate mattresses mounted on wheels.

But nothing can steal the spotlight from the Cathedral City LGBT+ Days headliner, who urges guests, “Enjoy the music and move and have fun with people who are like-minded.” It took Archuleta almost two decades to find

his tribe, and we’re a mirthful mix of every ethnicity and gender identity imaginable. His fans hail from all over the world, but they’re delighted to descend on Coachella Valley March 7th for all things Archuleta.

CHARLIE MCCLENDON

LGBT+ DAYS LEGACY AWARD RECIPIENT

Always lead with laughter. Every great boss, baller, and big-cheese should understand that you can’t do the heavy lifting without lightening the mood every once in a while. As the former City Manager of Cathedral City, Charlie McClendon gleefully compares notes with one of the funniest fictional top dogs of all time, Leslie Knope.

“What makes comedy fun is taking something real and then just pushing it a little further, and that’s what they did in Parks and Recreation,” narrates McClendon. “It’s an over the top depiction of a city manager and city employees, but what was true about that - and Amy Poehler really reflected it - was her commitment to do anything to make that community better and to make that city work. That part, I think, is true of a lot of people who work in local government.”

McClendon inspired the best in his crew and praises their harmonious humanity. “The people of Cathedral City have proved welcoming to all kinds of people; not just gay and lesbian people but immigrants and people from all over different parts of the country… The city government, the city council, and our elected officials have proven that they care about the LGBTQ community and are

welcoming and do things like LGBT+ Days to confirm their commitment to our community.”

Sweet segue! With a bounce in his voice and a rainbow in his cadence, McClendon describes the joy of Cat City’s biggest LGBT+ fest. “It’s quirky and different. When we were first starting the idea of having LGBT+ Days, we knew we weren’t Palm Springs. We knew we couldn’t be Palm Springs Pride. That’s a wonderful event and it has its own place, but we were looking for things that we could do that would be fun and different and would give people a reason to come. The bed race probably is the highlight of the event. It lines the streets downtown and we get 18 or 20 entries from different groups - some businesses, some social groups - they put their entries together and they put

“The people of Cathedral City have proved welcoming to all kinds of people.”

a lot of time and effort into decorating them and thinking about the costumes and it’s really fun. It’s really a fun thing and going down the street in the bed with crowds of people on both sides, cheering you on. It is a rush.”

And he should know - McClendon is a mattress maestro. “I think I was on the city bed every year as the rider. Part of it is because I’m small, so that helps with having to push it.”

In addition to being the compact cannonball responsible for his team’s many bed race triumphs, McClendon was (and still is) a tireless champion of his constituents. “I really appreciated my time here in Cathedral City. My job as City Manager was always to implement the policy decisions made by council, so I was fortunate to have elected officials that made policy decisions that were aligned with what the community wanted and what I thought was important. To have any recognition for that is an awesome thing, but that’s not why I did it.”

Pressed on the topic of receiving the coveted Legacy Award at this year’s festival, McClendon flexes his vibrant humility. “Everybody likes to be recognized for what they’ve accomplished,” he concludes. “My 12 years as City Manager of Cathedral City was the pinnacle of my career and I put a lot into that. I live in the community, and I love it here, so it’s really a great honor to me and I appreciate it very much.”

Leslie Knope would be proud. Thank you, Charlie McClendon, and congrats on your well-deserved distinction!

DR.

JASON HALPERIN

THE DOCTOR WILL SEE YOU NOW

W

ellness is a team sport. If you’re the lone healthy person caught in a wave of sickness, that illness consumes your every thought and fear until it eventually overpowers you. Recent global pandemics have taught us that care is collaborative; we’re only as strong as our most vulnerable fellow passengers. We innovate, we communicate, we educate… And the gays lead the way.

“We learned a lot from the HIV epidemic in terms of how to deeply care for those who were at risk.” Infectious disease specialist Dr. Jason Halperin is a holistic humanitarian, considering the macro factors that shape every micro healthcare concern facing us.

“We’ve been talking about the community viral load, recognizing that it’s not just my virus that matters but the viral

“Your voice matters. We can’t forget that we still have power, but we need to use that power.”

load of everyone around me and in my community. That purview has been so essential. Most recently, the response to the Mpox outbreak was so significant for the commitment to getting vaccinated, to lowering that risk not only for us, but for our community. That to me just shows that nothing will get in our way.”

Halperin speaks with the fervor of a warrior and the warmth of a healer. His compassion is nothing short of inspiring… and it’s nothing new. “Very early in my life, my mother, she was an artist, and I was blessed to meet these younger, gay men in South Florida, where I grew up. Unfortunately, I had too many that passed away that were family friends. So by 10 years old, I knew there was only one thing I wanted to do in life and that was to work in HIV.”

It’s a journey that brought Dr. Halperin from a rigorous east coast medical training to his current post at Stonewall Medical Center.

“They decided on this name before my time, about 15 years ago when it opened, but I couldn’t think of a more important name to have on the doors of our medical center. It is our identity. Our identity is community activism, it is the highest quality of medical care, but it’s also recognizing that the fight continues and if there’s ever a time to recognize that, it’s now. We are not backing down in any which way.”

Indeed - with Halperin at the helm, Stonewall is becoming the gold standard of comprehensive care

right here in Cathedral City. “We’ve now expanded it to have HIV care, gender-affirming care, and then our free sexual wellness model. We have a very vibrant sexual wellness clinic in Cathedral City. It’s available to everyone. It’s absolutely free. We do sexual wellness testing there. Of course that includes HIV testing, but we also do prep right out of our sexual wellness clinic. We’ve really leaned into injectable PrEP so we have a really busy, busy clinic. Even though it’s free we do ask for appointments, but we have easily accessible appointments.”

Just as the Stonewall uprising of 1969 spawned the first Pride gatherings of 1970, so too does Stonewall Medical Center’s mission spill into Cathedral City LGBT+ Days. “Pride to me has always been joy,” declares Dr. Halperin, “but it’s also joy in the face of people that don’t want us to experience joy. Joy is a political act, especially today, it is a political act, and we need to see each other as a community that is standing in solidarity.”

Happiness is serious business. In addition to making sure his patients live their grandest, most gleeful lives, Dr. Halperin is serving smiles as a judge at this year’s iconic Bed Races. It’s a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly. “I’ve been researching! What are the best beds, how quickly can they roll and move? I can’t wait to see the creativity and joy that folks will bring to the bed race.”

This exam should be a hoot and a half! But the good doctor isn’t just watching; he’s also listening. “Your voice matters,” Halperin concludes. “We can’t forget that we still have power, but we need to use that power.”

Like any productive medical conversation, this one will continue. Dr. Jason Halperin was gracious enough to lend us his insights on wellness in the age of conspiracies and hope in the face of oppression. You can read all about it in the March issue of GED Magazine. Book your follow-up appointment soon!

MAYOR

RAYMOND GREGORY

INTEGRITY AND INCLUSION LEAD CATHEDRAL CITY

The news is an avalanche of nonsense. While wars ravage the earth and millions struggle to feed their families, our “brave” national “leaders” - heavy on the air quotes - strive to shift the blame to immigrants and trans athletes.

Because the only thing we have to fear is… rainbows?

“You hear stories of other places that quibble over things like rainbow crosswalks or rainbow flags, but Cathedral City is proud to be well, well beyond that.” Mayor Raymond Gregory embraces empowerment, destroys divisiveness, and fights fear. “Although every city can have its issues and its different voices, our city actually puts together a festival where we celebrate our LGBT+ community and promote it and welcome people from all over to take a little rest, to take a pause, to celebrate with us.”

The Mayor is referring to the splendor that is Cathedral City LBGT+ Days. “Celebrating our 10th year, we say ‘Pride Begins Here’ in Cathedral City, being one of the first to celebrate Pride every calendar year. Pride is just another extension of what the city does all the time.”

When asked to provide an itinerary of inclusion, Mayor Gregory doesn’t disappoint. “We have our Tastes & Sounds, which is a weekly event, but its focus is on Pride for LGBT+ Days. The highlights, of course, are our Saturday concert with David Archuleta and then a very, very,

very must-see is the Sunday Bed Race. It’s definitely a unique element that makes Cathedral City LGBT+ Days very special and it is shocking how it gets better every year. The people involved are increasingly creative… We have a lot of competition on how fast some of our teams can actually move the beds down the course, so that combination continues to get better and better every year.”

Indeed, the Bed Races are where you can see hunky firemen pushing a festooned frame down the street, followed by drag royalty vamping it up on majestic mattresses alongside the Cathedral City Police Department. It’s a glorious melting pot of joy and justice, which makes Raymond Gregory right at home.

“I came from a law enforcement background,” he narrates, humbly nodding to his 27 years in the Riverside

County Sheriff’s Department. “Many facets of law enforcement still have a long way to go, but I have been able to bring that experience with me in my governance role in Cathedral City. We have great public safety in Cathedral City that meshes with our community and strives to celebrate our community as well.”

Mayor Gregory connects the Hollywood history of his berg with the queer-and-now. “It’s a place where the

artists came to live, to relax, to be free, to be comfortable, to be with others… Cathedral City continues to be a great place for people to come and not necessarily worry that they have to conform to the standards of others, but they can come and live in a more free way with other like-minded people and where they are celebrated by their neighbors, by their government, and by the whole community.”

Also during LGBT+ Days, the Mayor will be accepting, on behalf the City and City Council, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Community Leadership Award commending the City on consistent perfect scoring of 100 on the Municipal Equality Index. Cities are scored on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer (e.g., benefits), municipal services, law enforcement, and leadership on equality. The City’s score of 100 represents the highest standard of inclusion. “Cathedral City is proud to be one of the most diverse and inclusive municipalities in the nation, and our vibrant LGBTQ+ community is a vital part of what makes this city so special. This award from the Human Rights Campaign reflects values that our residents share — that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Our perfect score on the Municipal Equality Index reflects our commitment in action and, as we celebrate 10 years of Cathedral City LGBT+ Days, we couldn’t be prouder of the welcoming community we’ve built together.”

Making his final, passionate pitch for the city he loves, Gregory gets gregarious.

“If people haven’t been to the Coachella Valley or if they have but they haven’t been to Cathedral City, they really need to come and spend a little time with us to see all that we have to offer and to celebrate with our growing LGBTQ community. We have it all here in our city. Pride begins here!”

Always on brand, always in our hearts. Thank you, Mayor Gregorysee you at the races!

THE OLD GAYS

CATHEDRAL CITY LGBT+ DAYS GRAND MARSHALS

Y

ou are a gorgeous unicorn, jousting your glittery horn against a world that doesn’t understand just how damn special you are. But you weren’t hatched from a rainbow egg, honey. Despite how fiercely independent you are, you’re still part of our shared history.

And who better to give us a li’l history lesson than the social media sensation that is The Old Gays? Robert Reeves, Mick Peterson, Bill Lyons, and Jessay Martin, are four viral icons redefining what it means to age out loud.

“Cathedral City sort of led the way, and one of the first bars that opened up here was called Gaf,” narrates Bill Lyons before clarifying, “That’s ‘Fag’ spelled backwards.”

Picking up the beefy baton, Bob Reeves continues, “Highway 111 was a strict commercial area and there were a number of different types of bars that were just scattered down, starting with Daddy Warbucks at the eastern end, and then there was a piano bar and a western bar and at the opposite end was the Barracks, which was a leather bar and real loose with how they governed their clientele.” We all share a hearty laugh before Bob explains, “Right next to CC Construction was the old bathhouse, Club Baths. So, if you couldn’t find anyone at the bar when the bar closed, you just went next door to spend the rest of the night satisfying yourself! There was a bookstore down there that had a large gay collection, shall we say, and a basement where people went down and would cruise. It was pretty wild for a small place like this.”

But what Cathedral City lacks in size, they make up for in big love.

“The city honored us once before for Gay Days. We got a big plaque.” Bill beams, “It was basically to honor the Old Gays for Old Gays Days… It was quite an honor, and it was signed by the mayor and all the council people.”

As the topic shifts to the amazing activities at LGBT+ Days, Bob declares, “The Bed Races are definitely fun. It’s fun to watch policemen and firemen

racing in a bed against the community and the crowd grows every year!”

Soldiering on, Bob assesses, “I would say our crowd sizes here are kind of 10,000, maybe 20,000. And so, it takes on a much more local flavor.”

“I was going to say,” Bill adds, “it brings the local community together.”

The Old Gays know a thing or two about bringing people together. Their media platforms boast 13 million followers, subscribers, and general fanatics (guilty as charged!) - so what’s their special sassy sauce?

“I would say authenticity,” says Bill analytically.

“That camaraderie among us, people see it, and they like it. Yeah. And we push it to places no one else would ever go,” Bob postulates.

Bill recounts, “We were going along fine for a while, and then we went on

TikTok. That’s when we took off.”

But Bob prefers another characterization: “Exploded. That’s when we started getting million plus views for a video just a few days after we posted ‘em. The rest is history.”

It’s a legacy still being written, and Bob digs deep as to why legions of devotees connect with the Old Gays’ narrative. “So many of our generation were wiped out in the AIDS epidemic and for quite a while there haven’t been a lot of real visible faces out there. People are happy to see as much as they can about the experiences that we had during our coming out years and early years. Viewers express gratitude towards us for what we did during our generation to pave the way for the LGBTQ community.”

They are inspired and inspirational, leveraging their aw-shucks appeal into major deals!

“I’m busier than a bee,” quips Bob. “We’ve done a couple of brand deals… One for Centrum Silver, and then another for, what was that company from Australia?”

Bill for the save! “Canva.”

“Canva,” repeats Bob. “And we’re still not quite sure what they do.”

A fresh crop of giggles blossoms through the conversation before Bill regains his composure. “Another big deal, which we’re very happy about, was last year we were asked to do a podcast with iHeartRadio and we did a series of eight podcasts for them, and they have just renewed our contract.”

The Old Gays are in your earbuds and out of sight, and they couldn’t be more appreciative of their welldeserved success.

“Thank you to our fans for opening up their hearts to us. We get so many people saying, ‘oh, you really helped me come out and it’s made it a lot easier for me.’ It’s just heartwarming that people find us so informational,” concludes Bill.

We learn from them, we laugh with them, we love the heck out of The Old Gays. Thanks, fellas - see you at Cathedral City LGBT+ Days!

Here’s an understatement: food is fab!

Mealtimes are the best part of the day, and they’re oh so productive too. We make business deals over lunch; we make awkward morning-after conversations over breakfast…

And now, we can make a real difference over dinner.

Dinner with Patsi is a Cathedral

City institution. Patsi Kocan hosts a series of philanthropic feasts that make you feel great about cheat day. “It’s like going to Auntie Mame’s for a cocktail dinner party,” Patsi quips. “It’s kind of like community and fellowship. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and we’re a nonprofit that raises money for other nonprofits. So, I politely call myself a pass-through nonprofit… It’s like sharing thoughts and ideas between dinner

guests while enjoying dinner at one of my local restaurants here in Cathedral City, which raises money for Cathedral City nonprofits through dining at Cathedral City restaurants which brings in income to Cathedral City through tax dollars. And I get to be the prettiest one in the hair in heels.”

Aside from her physical beauty, Patsi has an inner glow fueled by a love-lovesupercalifragiLOVE for her community.

“I enjoy going to dinner, so therefore Dinner with Patsi was born. I enjoy dressing up and having a good time out, so that’s really fun, but when you sit down and look at it and realize that you sent 25 students off to Ireland, or to the Vatican, or to Hawaii so that they could sing and compete and bring back awards to our high school it’s like wow. It needs to be done so I can strap on a pair of pumps and let’s go.”

She’s stepping out in style and leaving a lasting legacy.

“I am a retired drag queen and I don’t perform anymore. There’s a lot of girls out there doing that right now and after performing the illusion of Patsy Cline for over 35 years, I decided I’m done.” Patsi continues, “When we retired, I started calling Cathedral City my hometown. I may not have been born here, but this is my hometown. Look at what we have here: we have a Pride event that has all of city council attending, judging the bed races along with the unofficial first lady of Cathedral City - Miss Patsi - the mayor, we have the fire and the police and staff and celebrities and friends and organizations all competing in our Pride event for fun. I mean that’s just unbelievable to me.”

Her cup of community spilleth over as she beams, “My God, we have free concerts in our beautiful amphitheater in the fall in the spring and I mean the lineup is really good and I love supporting that. It gives us something to get this out from in front of the damn TV and away from the news.”

This just in: Patsi is amazing! And she’s bringing her signature spectacularness to Cathedral City LGBT+ Days.

“There’s my kickoff bingo and brunch at Luchador and that’s a fundraiser for the high school for the performing arts. I mean, we cram all this fun stuff into three or four days, but it’s not so crowded and it’s not over the top. Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love Palm Springs Pride, but I like my Pride a little better ‘cause it’s a place where a girl can put on a suit and a big floppy hat and go out and have a fun event!”

Speaking of hats, she’s passing hers around, so get ready to get generous. “We’ve made a difference in our community. Now, it’s a big difference. I know I’ve raised over $150,000 in cash and checks but if we include the trips and everything, we’re pushing ourselves probably towards $300,000… We did this one hat full at a time.”

And all Patsi asks in return is to get that ol’ familiar thrill of making a damn difference. “It’s wonderful when I count up the money and give this to an organization and say ‘here use this.’ I don’t put strings attached to it. You can use it however you want to where you need the money to go.”

One particular project races through her mind as she reflects in the rearview mirror on all of her great deeds. “The Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City has older vans that needed to be replaced,” Patsi narrates. “I partnered with NBC News, Honda of the Desert, Boys and Girls Club, and Canyon Print and we started raising money to get this van. Long and short, it took us twice as long as I thought it would - thanks economy! But we bought a brand-new Honda Odyssey van right around Thanksgiving time last year and delivered it to the Boys and Girls Club.”

The ever chipper Patsi gets uncharacteristically misty-eyed as she recounts, “I just sat down and cried.”

Brushing her emotions aside, Patsi pivots back to the business at hand. “Support local,” she declares. “I really believe in supporting my locals.” And to see just how dedicated she is, surf on over to her online platforms. “Follow Dinner with Patsi. She’s on Facebook

and she’s on at dinnerwithpatsi.com.”

But to get the true Patsi experience, join her IRL.

“If you can, pop in and say hi at one of Patsi’s events. She’s always at Luchador on the last Saturday of every month doing bingo from noon to two and she’s having dinner somewhere in Cathedral City on the third Wednesday of the month from 5 to 8. So pop in and say ‘hi girl’ because this is our hometown, and if we don’t take care of our hometown, who the hell’s gonna?”

With a heaping helping of generosity, a kettle full of compassion, and a dash of atta-gurl attitude, Dinner with Patsi is cooking up a better tomorrow and inviting you to the table. She has earned the final word as the hostess with the most YAASS:

“You’re gonna go to dinner anyway, so come have dinner with a drag queen!”

If you want to witness some great acting skills, ask any gay in the Coachella Valley vicinity what they think of Cathedral City Boys Club, or “CCBC” if you’re sassy. A sly smile will spread across their lips, their heart rate will flutter pleasantly, and a coy expression will shroud their face.

“I hear it’s nice.”

Sure, Jan. You *know* it’s nice because you’ve been there and you love it! The clothing optional resort boasts hotties by the bushel and the adjoining Runway Restaurant & Bar satiates your hunky hunger. Flirty flora lines the landscape, enticing you to explore every damn inch of the grounds, including a next-level, naughty nature trail and an “intimacy” area filled with slings and smooches.

We had the opportunity to chat with CCBC owner and proprietor Richard Altman and his son Eric for a Q&A that’s OMG - check it out!

CELEBRATING SWEET SENSUALITY AT CCBC

We love how diverse your clientele isthere’s truly someone for everyone. How do you create such an inclusive vibe?

We’ve worked hard over the years, decades really, to make sure our guests and employees know that CCBC is a place where people are welcome. We work with numerous promoters who create a variety of events, all the while maintaining a sense of community, safety and acceptance.

For anyone apprehensive about visiting a clothing optional resort, what advice do you have for them?

This is a judgement free zone. We understand that a certain number of our guests have never visited a clothing optional resort. Stop in and talk with staff. Have a drink or a bite to eat at Runway, which is located in the same building as our front desk. They’ll soon see that we are a friendly location to enjoy the sun amongst friends. By the way, being clothes-free is not a requirement. Plenty of guests wear swim attire at the Resort. Do what makes you comfortable here. That’s what it’s all about.

Why is body positivity so sexy?

In an uptight world, it’s simply nice to be accepted just the way you are. When you can be somewhere with like-minded people, you can relax and be yourself and that’s always sexy.

What can guests at the Morning Wood event expect to discover?

Morning Wood is one of our newest events. It promises a great vibe, pool party, BBQ, nudie good times, unforgettable moments, and that classic Morning Wood energy that brings boys together in all the best ways.

How does a stop at CCBC factor into the perfect LGBT+ Days experience?

CCBC is iconic, even if we say so ourselves. We have a pool party on Saturday, 3/7/2026 from noon to 4pm. It’s the perfect time to visit if you’ve never been here before. And if you have? Well, then you know it’s always a great time. What enticing menu items are coming to Runway?

We’re a great place to check out if you want to have a gathering, but we are also open to the public for dining. Our chef is always looking to add new items to the menu but currently, flatbreads, burgers, chicken & fries and always a cold drink to pair them with. The Hangry Helper appetizer plate is a great sharable option. Don’t forget our 24/7 Breakfast Sandwich. And you have to try a CCBC Slushie.

Yummy anytime but especially with the weather heating up.

What does community mean to you?

Supporting and encouraging one another. Having people’s backs. That reciprocal relationship among people. Ten years ago, I was one of the founders of Cathedral City LGBT Days and CCBC was the main sponsor for the first several years. Now it’s called Cathedral City LGBT+ Days but the Bed Race is still a huge part of the festivities, and the event grows every year. It was important for me to be a leader in the city and get something special started here. I was proud to be named 2016-2017 LGBT+ Days Ambassador for Cathedral City LGBT+ Days.

Closing thoughts: anything we missed, anything you’d like to say directly to our readers - the floor is yours!

Come see us at CCBC Resort Hotel and Runway Bar & Restaurant!! We’re celebrating 30 years at the Resort and are proud to be a part of our community!

There you have it: play proudly, frolic respectfully, and see/be seen at CCBC!

Open Daily at 4pm

CATHEDRAL CITY

THE GAY CAPITAL OF THE DESERT

n the seventies and eighties, if you wanted to be seen, you went to Palm Springs. But if you wanted to be yourself, you crossed the line into Cathedral City, affectionately dubbed “Cat City.” It was a wild, wonderful frontier – the place where the ‘Hardware’ signs meant leather, the dance floors were sweat-soaked, and the rules of the ‘respectable’ world simply didn’t apply.

IThere is a poetic justice in the fact that the same city once treated as a ‘forbidden’ playground for the marginalized eventually became the desert’s “living room.” Here’s a walk back through time to retrace some of those steps Cathedral City has taken as a city…

The 1970s

While neighboring Palm Springs was still maintaining a buttoned-up, “Hollywoodglam” image, the LGBTQ+ community began drifting toward Cathedral City. Back then, it was the wild frontier. Because Palm Springs made it nearly impossible for “alternative” businesses to get licenses, entrepreneurs headed down Highway 111. In 1971, Oil Can Harry’s Spa opened its doors, providing one of the first safe, private spaces for gay men to socialize and relax. It was the start of Cat City’s reputation as the “hands-off” sanctuary where you could truly be yourself.

The 1980s

By the 1980s, Cathedral City wasn’t just an alternative; it was the destination. It was the “Gay Capital of the Desert,” home to iconic spots like Daddy Warbucks and CC Construction Company. Then there was Rocks, a club that actually featured a builtin volcano that “erupted” during the night. Ironically, the club met a real-life fiery end when a blaze gutted it in the early 90s.

This era was all about high energy—think go-go dancers, whipped cream wrestling, and a burgeoning leather scene that found a permanent home in the city’s more industrial, gritty corners. While the rest of the world was often unwelcoming, Cat City felt like a fortress of neon lights and community spirit.

But it wasn’t all just about the nightlife. When the AIDS crisis hit, Cathedral City’s bars became fundraising hubs. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance of the Desert (GLAD) was founded with its first office in Cathedral City, coordinating the first local Pride picnics and support networks during the community’s darkest hour.

HISTORY

The 1990s–2000s

As the community matured, so did its impact on the city’s landscape. In 1992, the legendary Barracks opened. Originally opened as the “Wolf’s Den,” the Barracks became a world-renowned destination for leather-kink culture. Its Sunday Beer Busts were legendary. Greg Pettis was elected to the City Council in 1994. He was the city’s longest-serving councilmember and the city’s first openly gay public servant. Pettis paved the way for a more inclusive local government. He didn’t just hold the seat; he became a mentor for LGBTQ+ leaders across Riverside County. At the time of his passing in January 2019 at the age of 64, he was the city’s sitting Mayor. His death marked the end of an era, as he had been a constant presence in the city’s governance for a quarter-century. He is remembered for his “Rainbow Ribbon” initiatives and for ensuring that Cathedral City was one of the first in the region to score a perfect 100 on the HRC Municipal Equality Index.

In 2001, the city took a historic step by dedicating the first officially recognized LGBTQ+ Veterans Memorial in the U.S. at Desert Memorial Park. Standing tall nearly a decade before “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was repealed, it became a sacred site for queer patriots, proving that Cathedral City was a place that honored the community’s sacrifices as much as its celebrations.

The 2010s – Today

The 2010s saw Cathedral City transition from a nightlife refuge to a global political pioneer. Today, the city is experiencing a “New Wave.” Cathedral City continues to score a perfect 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index and is receiving the HRC Community Leadership Award on March 7th at the LGBT+ Days celebration. Cathedral City was also officially named the Best “Emerging Hood” for 2025 from GayCities, having triumphed over Montreal, Brooklyn, and others.

While the legendary Barracks recently closed its doors after 30+ years, the spirit is being kept alive by the highly anticipated Eagle Cathedral City, opening in 2026. Along with One Eleven Bar and The Roost Lounge, these venues continue the tradition of providing inclusive spaces where locals and visitors alike can celebrate the city’s diversity.

The city’s annual LGBT+ Days (the first Pride of the California season) has become a beloved tradition, famous for its “Bed Race,” where local businesses race decorated beds down the street in a literal display of community momentum. This year marks the 10th Annual Cathedral City LGBT+ Days which continues to highlight the city’s commitment to its community.

We are lucky to live, work, and play, in this place we call home, Cathedral City.
