ADVICE FROM AN IDIOT with BILLY FRANCESCA Friends, thank you so much for the e-mails! I got some really nice just “comments” and well-wishers. Ya’ll are gonna make me go out and get a heart… but I’m not trading in my two livers, soooo, shoot me an email at theadviceidiot@gmail.com. I love sharing my “knowledge,” its only because I have made so many mistakes over the years. Here is this month’s advice…

Hey Advice Idiot, I’ve got one for you - not sure if I am being overly emotional or if my feelings are valid. I feel like I am being taken advantage of at work. I work with friends, and we are a very close group. However, lately it feels like I am pulling more of the work load than others. It seems like the more work I do, the more everyone else is happy to just let me do it. I don’t want to sound like I’m whining, but at the same time, I am questioning, ‘why am I the only person to see this?’ Just wondering what to do, I don’t want to come across as a problem. Thanks, Working 9 to 5 or Longer! Hey Working 9 to 5 or Longer!, Now I’ve got Dolly Parton in my head, but I’m happy with that! FIRST OF ALL, and YES in all caps, your feelings are valid no matter who, what, or where. They are your feelings, and they need to be explored, shared, realized, and released. Secondly, nobody is going to make you a priority if you don’t make that for yourself. I do shit all the time, that “isn’t my job,” and from time to time, I need to reevaluate WTF I am doing, and let people know that “Hey, I am only one person.” I find myself usually saying something like, “I don’t mind helping out and doing more, but how much do ya’ll need me to carry?” I get it, it can be an awkward situation and I understand not wanting to come across as lazy or whiny and all that jazz, but Boo, you need to know your line in the sand and be able to articulate that to coworkers, friends, etc. I use humor a lot too, because clearly, I am a hoot! Take some time to look at the extra work you are covering and try and remove that from your world. My Mom keeps saying, “Not my pig, not my farm.” I’m not a fan of that saying… when did my Mom work with pigs? But it is helpful. XO

Whew, the Kids have some stuff to share and I am here for it! Please write in, share, and let it out! We are all amazing creatures, but let’s be honest, I’m really UP there! XOXO BF 12 | GEDMAG.com

Hey Idiot, Is it normal for your boyfriend to want you to bottom for his friends? We didn’t start off with an “open relationship,” but when we were in Palm Springs, a bunch of us were all out and things got a bit drunk, and I ended up having a three way with my boyfriend and his buddy who was visiting. I was fine with that time, it was chill and fun, and wasn’t planned at all, but now my boyfriend keeps casually making comments that this guy he knows thinks I’m cute, or another dude wants to hook up with us. I’m like, ‘Ummm WTF,’ it was a onetime thing and now all of a sudden, I’m the pass around bottom? I’m not sure what to do. I like the guy I’m dating a lot and don’t want to lose him, but this isn’t really my vibe. Any thoughts? You seem like you’ve been around the block… Thank You, I’m Not a Bus Hi I’m Not a Bus, Now that had me howling, once I figured out what you meant by it! Great line! This seems to come up a lot in “gay” relationships, sidebar “normal” isn’t a word I am even remotely familiar with, but open relationships seem to be happening more and more. Now, I know that wouldn’t work for me, but then again, I can’t even get a guy to take me to McDonalds. What this comes down to for you and yours sounds like some major COMMUNICATION, needs to happen. Maybe explain to your boyfriend that when it happened in Palm Springs, it was organic and fun (I swear that city is the threesome capital of the West Coast!) It seems like an open relationship is something your boyfriend feels comfortable with, and if you are not, please use your voice and speak your truth. Sooner or later, it will have to all come out, and in the long run you will be happier with yourself and your own energy if you can talk about what you want - sexually, emotionally, and otherwise. The phrase “nobody puts Baby in the corner” keeps ringing in my mind, but of course we would have to change some words to bottom…. [laughs] Your anxiety about this issue and your relationship, no matter how short or long, will help to define you and your heart on your journey. Talk it out! XO

Sign of the Times

Trevor Wayne’s Bold, Brilliant Palm Springs Pride Poster By Kevin Perry

All photos © GED Magazine

There are certain signposts in life that guide us to our community and to our destiny. There was the first indication that you were gay (Magnum P.I. in shorty-shorts, anyone?) and that come hither glance from your inaugural hookup, not to mention the actual signs that directed you to venture from your birthplace to the safe haven where you currently live openly and fabulously. We may miss some helpful signals, and others might be torn down, but no matter how many rainbow flags get defaced or destroyed, we must continue to prop them back up. Communicating our love and acceptance to other LGBTQ individuals could help them find their way to a happier, healthier existence. Trevor Wayne intimately understands the need to look beyond the facade and craft meaningful iconography. He applied his whimsically warped design aesthetic to the 2023 Palm Springs Pride poster design and the results are a real trip. “Pride generally, I think for a lot of people, it’s just a big party,” Wayne assesses. “That’s how people see it. But what I love about what Palm Springs is doing, is they’re picking topics with real purpose, which I think to me is a purpose of Pride… to be visible. It needs to make a statement. And of course, it’s all of us coming together to celebrate and have fun because in a town like Palm Springs, we’re used to that, but the people that don’t live in Palm Springs, get to experience that kind of community

on a bigger level. Last year was so insane. It was unbelievable. And this year’s going to be, I’m sure, twice as big.” So, we’ll need a banner to match! “I was asked to do the Pride poster before they knew the theme, and of course I said yes, but I sat on edge waiting for a while, and last year’s Pride was Say Gay, kind of a protest at everything happening in Florida. So, same thing this year, they announced that the theme is Drag Now Drag Forever, which I couldn’t even think of a more perfect theme that I wanted to work on.” Wayne’s vibrant imagination ignited, but before he strutted too far down the creative runway, he galvanized a few guardrails to pave his progress. “For the poster originally, I didn’t want to depict any actual drag queens,” he explains. “Drag is so broad. It just felt like it needed more of a symbol of drag. I tried to stay away from using any skin tones, but I couldn’t get away from it so I tried to pick something that could represent a broader community, something a little surreal. And when I think of drag, I think of lipstick, high heels and wigs. And so, I just came up with this bizarre high heel with an arm sticking out of it, holding a lipstick.” But as any self-respecting kween will tell you, balm is the bomb! Makeup conveys a myriad of emotions, and Wayne explored them all before sculpting his signature ‘stick. GEDMAG.com | 21

22 | GEDMAG.com

All photos © GED Magazine

“Originally, the lipstick was supposed to be the protest fist that you see, but I realized that that might’ve been too much. While we need to protest, and I believe in that, I wanted something that was a little more hopeful than we’re being backed into a corner and we’re protesting. So instead, I changed it to the hand of Lady Liberty figuring we don’t need a protest, we just need freedom and justice for all. I wanted it to be a more positive message, which I think the Lady Liberty hand actually worked better.” The key to any useful sign is its placement. So, where does a roadside spectacle like Wayne’s belong? In the heart of our hometown, naturally. “And then I was picking the background,” Wayne continues, so he went with “the mountain and some windmills that we all love. And I put a wig on the sign for Palm Springs, and I’m happy with it. I love that the high heel and the lipstick as a standalone, can come out of the background image. That’s how that all came about.” The final product evokes the fierce finale of the classic film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. As our heroines drive off into the sunset, a two-dimensional stiletto appears against a cautionary yellow backdrop. They have effectively painted their reality queer, and Trevor Wayne has brought a similar sense of

passion and liberation to his Pride poster. His perspective is a playful mix of Roy Lichtenstein’s comic book allure and Edvard Munch’s goth intensity. Influenced by cartoons and kitsch, Wayne mashes together unlikely visual elements like bananas and horror flicks. You might also recognize his reimagined Golden-Girls-as-superheroes renderings. And don’t forget Uni-Cow: the bold bovine mascot who produces rainbow-hued milk and sports a phallic horn on her fuzzy forehead. Wayne elevates each of his concepts with a discipline for detail. It’s Warhol meets Walt Disney and it will melt even the most cynical critic. “I would describe my art in one word,” Wayne beams. “FUN. I do a very pop art style, a lot of parody, and like to take dark imagery and make fun of it. It’s just stuff that should lighten up a room.” Now there’s an understatement! Wayne has managed to illuminate the entire Coachella Valley with an unabashed admiration for his surroundings. “For me, Palm Springs, I fell in love with it.” Wayne pivots to an aw-shucks tone as he explains, “It’s a cheesy answer, but most people seem to say the same thing. It’s just something in the GEDMAG.com | 23

air. There’s a tranquility here, there’s the beauty with the mountains, of course, the architecture helps. And being a resort town is nice because a lot of people come here to be happy specifically, and the artist community is great.” It’s been a joyous journey for Wayne, who seamlessly blends his humble Midwest upbringing with stints in NYC and LA to create a metaphorical melange of experiential color. Since his arrival in Palm Springs, the maestro has painted the town triumphant. “For three years, I had my own little store and gallery that was all my artwork and all my own merchandise,” Wayne recounts. But his vision was too grand for the cramped confines of his former shop. “I recently just expanded into a place that’s about four times the size, and it’s allowed me to do what my original vision was: to have my art, have my merchandise, but then also be able to sell other art related merchandise I enjoy… I carry Jonathan Adler, Pantone products, art books, as well as being able to show some other local artists that I really admire.” His new enclave will inspire shoppers and art aficionados alike, but it will also forge a literal link with the adjacent properties in the up-and-coming Uptown Design District. “It’s going to connect everyone down from Interior Illusions all the way up to Seaplane,” narrates Wayne. Sounds like a reason to celebrate! 24 | GEDMAG.com

“My store right now is open, but I’m actually having the official opening party on the Friday of Pride weekend which is November 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.” To make the opening even more grand, Wayne is collaborating with his new neighbors. “One is another store with a really great home goods type of things, and then on the other side of me is a high-end art gallery opening. So all three of us are going to have a block party opening that Friday night. And we’re doing it early because we know it’s Pride weekend, and there’s a lot going on Friday night.” You don’t say? Pause for adorability effect. Pride will certainly bloom brilliantly in our berg, a city so gay that it can swell to four times its normal population without shoving aside civility or inclusion. “What makes Palm Springs wonderful to me is that it has a very small town feel. But I don’t miss a big city. The restaurants here are phenomenal. The people who are here are phenomenal. So, it’s easy to shut the rest of the world out and focus on art, but at the same time still live in this glorious, magical place,” Wayne concludes. And it continues to dazzle, courtesy of Trevor Wayne. So, follow his lead and heed the signs to PS Pride. Next stop: amazement!

The Queens of

DRAG-A-LICIOUS By Alexander Rodriguez By We are GAGGED! Palm Springs Pride promises to be the biggest yet for GED as they join LE Parties for not one, not two, not three, but SIX major events. Pool parties, hot boys, after-hours, amazing DJs, and drinks…oh, did we mention DRAG QUEENS? The weekend kicks off at Margaritaville on Friday, Nov 3rd at 7 p.m. with DRAG-A-LICIOUS. This iconic drag show, the most monumental drag event to grace Palm Springs Pride, guarantees an experience like no other with glitz, glamour, and camp extravaganza as stars from RuPaul’s Drag Race, including Lady Camden, Willam, Jorgeous, and Kimora Blac, sashay and slay upon the stage and in the aisles. Your enchanting host, the one and only Ethylina Canne of Palm Springs, will lead you through a night of unforgettable performances, perhaps some lip-sync battles, and boundless energy. Here’s why we are obsessed with our cast:

Kimora Blac

Kimora has that booty that doesn’t quit. Neither does her hustle, she has established her brand far beyond reality TV. Born in Kansas, she was meant to slay and started doing drag when she was just 15. She instantly killed her looks on the 9th season of Drag Race and quickly became a fan favorite. Beyond her TV appearances, she has been a fierce advocate of the drag community, calling on our community and allies to come together to support, especially during these trying times. In or out of drag, she celebrates both her feminine and masculine sides, challenging societal norms regarding gender identity. How can we best support our drag community during the latest political attack on our community? Our community has always been under attack. I think when it comes to this question, it’s especially important that all of our allies and people in our community do what they can to support us in any way. Whether it’s showing up at our shows to support us, whether it’s showing up at gay-owned businesses, or even just reposting anything that needs to be reposted. We’ve come a long way in what we fought for and it’s important that we keep the fighting going! You celebrate the marriage of the masculine and feminine. How did you deal with that growing up when it was far from being the norm?

30 | GEDMAG.com

Lady Camden I feel like masculine and feminine is already a war between people in our community and how people only look for certain things or qualities in people to make them feel either masculine or feminine. It’s a toxic trait that I’ve been fighting for because being feminine myself, I never viewed myself as feminine until people started calling me that. I think what matters the most is if you can find someone who’s living their authentic self to the best they can, bringing them down because people dress a certain way, act a certain way, or even walk a certain way is the worst thing to judge because it’s only going to affect your insecurities more than anything else. I’ve always fought for feminine men and women because we are looked down upon as weak and we don’t have the ability to have that ‘masculine’ trait. Being a full-time drag queen, I know it is extremely hard for us to even find love and the fact that I accidentally found it is one of the biggest blessings in my life because I found someone who is completely secure in himself that masculine and feminine doesn’t matter. I feel sorry for the people who only strive for either masculine or feminine because they’re closing so many doors on finding love and good people out there. What do you love most about being Kimora? I love inspiring the new generation of drag. Growing up, my sources to figure out what ‘drag’ was limited. I had to figure out my art and be true to who I was and came to find out that there were so many other people like me with my creative mind. Thanks to Drag Race for airing this life to the entire world to educate people and to let people know that this is another art form that people were born to do. What was your first Pride like, what was your biggest takeaway? My first pride was San Francisco Pride, and I was in high school. I remember specifically going to Pride, as a sophomore, and knowing that these were my people. Finding your tribe is important because that’s how you know you belong, especially if you grow up in a household or have family members who do not accept you. Finding your family is important because those are the people who understand you and know what you’re going through and will help you get through life. What is your message to the Palm Springs LGBTQ community this Pride season? Keep the momentum going. Support your brothers and sisters of all kinds and remember that we all started somewhere. The one thing that we have in common is trying to navigate through life and do something right. We all want love in many different ways and it’s important that we all show love in many different ways, whether you’re attracted to someone or not. I challenge you to say hi to someone who looks completely different from you with different experiences because you don’t know that one simple ‘hello’ can mean the world to that person.

Having come to the US from across the pond, Lady Camden was a consummate performer before she appeared on the 14th season of Drag Race. She studied at the Royal Ballet School in London, then danced with the Slovak National Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, and later with San Francisco’s Smuin Ballet. She continued to thrill on her season of Drag Race up to the very end with her fierce lip-synch against Willow Pill in the season’s finale. Most recently, she shared her sexy side with her single “Dirtiest Secrets” where she showed a lot of skin and elements GEDMAG.com | 31

of kink. When asked about what her dirtiest secret is, she coyly responds “If I tell you, then it wouldn’t be a secret then, would it?”

long list of club appearances around the globe. Fun fact: did you know she had a bit of a romance with her fellow cast member Orion Story? Aye aye aye!

Jorgeous

Ethylina Canne

Inspired by Selena and JLo, this pocket-size queen has a fiery personality that is three times her size. Raised in San Antonio, Texas, she celebrates her Mexican heritage with her looks and performances. She started performing at clubs at the age of 16, and I bet she still gets carded to this day. Billboard called her “the season’s undisputed lip sync assassin” for her appearance alongside Lady Camden in season 14 of Drag Race. She hasn’t rested from her appearance on the show and went on to join the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race Live!, Werq the World tour, and a

Palm Springs local queen of bingo, Ethylina Canne, will serve as emcee for Drag-A-Licious, holding her own against the Drag Race alumni. Her road to glamour started with a childhood being raised on a modest farm in Central California. Right after high school, she packed her bags and headed to San Francisco, making a splash in the drag scene in the mid-90s at the legendary Trannyshack (now called the T-shack). She is a renaissance queen as an actress, hostess, comedian, officiant, and iconic ball caller who has been working in the industry for the past 30 years all around the globe. In addition to keeping audiences in stitches, she is an avid philanthropist supporting DAP Health, Alliance for Housing and Healing, HRC, and many other organizations that help communities and their members in need. Her community work includes GED’s monthly charity drag bingo

“Ethyl’s Place,” which has raised over $30,000 for local charities. This year she is named as the 2023 Community Grand Marshal of the Greater Palm Springs Pride Parade. “I am truly honored and bursting with PRIDE that I have been chosen as this year’s Community Grand Marshall and I’m simply over the moon with joy,” Ethyl told us. “I LOVE the community we have here in our little desert oasis and the experiences I’ve had since moving here 10 years ago are priceless. We need to step out, step up, and show the world that DRAG IS NOT A CRIME!”

Willam

You have established yourself as a powerhouse brand outside of the Drag Race world…how did you effectively do that? I may not have won or been declared the best at anything, but I consistently upload videos to YouTube for a decade and a half. I put my footprint and wigstink on any kinda media that was out there. I did a best-selling self-help book, wrote the bottoming national anthem “Boy is a Bottom,” tried to take down ChickFil-A with “Chow Down,” started my own makeup line Suck Less Face & Body, collabs with American Apparel, walked runways in NYFW twice, and established a podcast femmepire. I just throw a buncha shit at the wall and see what sticks. My motto is: do something for my career every day cuz no one else is gonna hand out free cookies for dreaming. Gotta put in the work. You have appeared in just about every type of medium – film, web series, stage, TV, music, - what is something that you’d still like to work on that you haven’t yet? I think A Star Is Born sequel would be nice. I’m honestly living my teenage dream of being in a hit show (Titanique) in NYC eight times a week. they’re on their 500th-something performance and it’s the most fun I’ve had upright in years. The only thing I really want now is an Emmy. I lost my first two nominations for Eastsiders on Netflix. I really like shiny gold stuff so the third time’s the charm hopefully. How can drag queens best support each other? I think drag queens and kings can support each other by showing up to each others’ shows. I will always do a lap at a show and throw some coins. Showing face and being present in the places and spaces you want to be booked is important. Why is this Pride year so important for our community? Without visibility, we risk being discriminated against and losing the ground that the generations before us gained. We need to keep our footing and keep marching forward now more than ever for our trans brothers & sisters and the BIPOC members of our community. Marsha P Johnson said, “No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us” and she was right. Being out, proud and loud is setting the perfect example for the rainbow children coming up to leave the world a better place than they found it.

Last, but certainly not least, is one of our faves. Willam Belli is a chameleon of entertainment and you never know where he is going to pop up next whether it be on a TV show, in a major motion picture, hosting a podcast, releasing an album, going viral on social media, launching a makeup line, writing a book, in a play, or in an alleyway of West Hollywood. He did drag for the first time at the age of 13 and three years later he would get his first paying drag gig. Her relationship with Drag Race can be considered a bit rocky, but she went on to prove that her brand and success were not dependent on his time on the show. New York magazine placed him ninth on their list of “the most powerful drag queens in America.”

Don’t miss this all-star cast Friday night, November 3rd, and secure your place with Pre-Sale Tickets, offering the choice of General Admission, Priority Seating for prime views, or the VIP Experience has special seating, a drag-swag bag, and delightful hors d’oeuvres before the show. Dicks: The Musical… Pass or Smash? By Alexander Rodriguez Last month, I was invited to a screening of Dicks: The Musical, the first musical from independent studio A24. Known for putting out high-quality, edgy material, the studio has developed a strong fanbase of both critics and audiences; when you see that A24 logo you know it’s a movie that’s going to affect you in some way. What to say about Dicks? I wanted to lead the review with three words but couldn’t decide on which. It was either WTF or I LOVED IT! Both work. Having to wait until the film was finally released, I can’t wait to spill the tea. If you’re a fan of South Park, this is basically South Park LGBTQ style. It is irreverent, it is politically incorrect, it is over the top, it is shocking, it is sexually divergent, and yet, there is charm and joy in its queasiness. I smiled from start to finish, and it wasn’t because of the pre-movie drinks. The film is based on the off-Broadway musical Fucking Identical Twins by Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson – yes, that’s the title, and yes, it is literal. The two masterminds behind that show reprised their roles and screen wrote the film. Josh and Aaron are truly ones to keep eyes on, they are destined to become the rebel-rousing gay version of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. How they were able to get Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang, and even a showstopping performance from Megan Thee Stallion, is beyond me. I can’t imagine anyone reading the script and thinking, “Wow, that makes sense.” But somehow it all makes sense, even down to the most random storyline, like a runaway vagina that comes to save the day. (Don’t ask.) The story is simple enough, a blatant take on The Parent Trap, two business world adversaries (Josh and Aaron) find out they are identical twins (forget that they don’t look alike at all) and 36 | GEDMAG.com

decide to switch places (by wearing Party City wigs) to get their estranged parents to reconnect. Their parents – a lisping, wheelchair-bound crazy pants of a mother (played by Mullally) and a foppish openly gay father (played by Lane) – reconnect after a date for the books and find out that they still have a spark for each other. Forget the fact that their mom is missing some of her lady parts and that her dad is clearly and proudly gay. Ah, fluid love. Will this family come together and become that picture-perfect image that the boys crave? Well, the family comes together, that’s for sure. Thrown in for good measure is Megan Thee Stallion as the two boys’ boss bitch in a musical number that every drag queen will no doubt add to their repertoire. Making appearances along the way is Bowen Yang as God…in hot pants and gay club gear. If you’re faint of heart in a religious way, you’ll probably want to leave before you hear him sing “God is a faggot.” Did I mention the Sewer Boys? Inexplicably, the father character has become guardian to two sewer creatures that he keeps in a cage in his living room. (Again, don’t ask… it still makes sense.) Holding their own against the veteran cast they are surrounded by, Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson hold their own. They come across as industry vets themselves, despite their limited film appearances. They master the art of evoking pathos even through their hyper-stylized comedic characters. But the smartest casting I have seen in a while comes from the pairing up of Mullally and Lane as the love-locked parents. Obviously, they are masters of comedy from stage to screen, and all of their talents come together in an embarrassment of riches. They do steal the film, from Megan’s lisp (that could otherwise be a cheap

and overused trick) to Nathan’s jazz hands, to their singing that ranges from genre to genre. This is not a film where actors are cast and can barely squeak out the songs, these actors can SING! Their chemistry is palpable, and you can literally see the glimmer in their eyes as actors having the time of their life. They are tearing up the scenery and winking at us (and each other) the whole time. The songs are enjoyable and toe-tapping, just not sure what kind of life span they have beyond the storyline. The chemistry you see on screen was seen in person at the screening I attended that included in-person attendance by the entire lead cast (minus Thee Stallion). They were all like a pack of cool kids in high school, hugging and laughing with each other, and earnestly watching the film they had made. They clearly enjoyed working together, and what they have made is a naughty basement musical turned Hollywood glam. The film is full of LGBTQ themes and hot buttons, but not in reverence. What the conservative side makes fun of us for is all there. Sexualizing our culture, making God gay, and making the entire movie “woke,” it’s all there. The entire movie’s message is to love who you want to, even if it’s a sewer monster. Making a film like this when the political conservatives are attacking our community based on sexuality, criminalizing us as perverts, is ballsy. But if we don’t continue to push the envelope, will we get anywhere? What I absolutely loved about this film is that we can just sit back and laugh at our current situation. There is plenty of content out there that makes political and social statements about our community that are usually delivered heavy-handed or deeply emotional and dramatic. This is a comedic middle finger to all those against us, and it is delicious. Comedy often pokes fun at the drama around us, and this film does it magically.

Smash or pass? It was a laugh per minute, I left the movie theater smiling from ear to ear. But it is not for everyone. With those in our community ready to lash out at each other, I’m sure this film will get plenty of haters because it is so irreverent. But everyone needs to take a chill pill and remember that yes, our community can be naughty, we can be sassy, and we can certainly bring humor to any situation. Have a couple of cocktails, go see the film, have a few laughs, and let me know what you think. VERDICT: SMASH

AWAKENING: Most Vegas shows fall into one of a few categories: Cirque, celebrity, strippers, comedians or magicians. Awakening, celebrating its first anniversary at Wynn this month, pretty much defies description and that’s its greatest joy. It features the same round auditorium previously used by Le Rêve with the audience surrounding the stage, but it is truly unique. There is a thin plot line where some girl has to go to various kingdoms to collect magic stones, but that is just enough plot to hold together an amazing collection of the best theatrical effects I have ever seen. There is a lot of dancing for the cast of 40, probably the most amazing magic illusions in town, some incredible giant puppets, gorgeous costumes and even some fine singing, but for me the most exciting thing was how they could create so many varied environments employing the whole theatre using projections, lighting, sounds, lasers, tons of flown scenery and a stage floor that was made up of dozens of elevators, interior lighting, rotation and just about everything else. I have seen most of the major review shows in Las Vegas but if I were able to see just one again, it would be Awakening. Playing indefinitely at Wynn Las Vegas (wynnlasvegas.com). Photo credit Brinkoff-Moegenburg

MAMA MIA: I’m not sure how relevant Abba is these days, but for most of us, their songs have the ability to conjure up some happy hours on the dance floors of yore. The 1999 musical, which features 22 familiar hits, has grossed over $4 billion dollars. In short, it’s a hit. I have seen it onstage several times, but the producers seem to time the tours to every four or five years, so I’m ready to be re-immersed into dancing on a Greek island (often featuring the ensemble men in Speedos!). The current national tour is visiting several California cities: San Diego Civic 11/7-12; Hollywood Pantages 11/14 – 12/3; San Francisco Golden Gate 12/5 – 10; and San Jose Center for Performing Arts 12/12 – 17. 40 | GEDMAG.com

KINKY BOOTS: Based on the 2005 British film with the same name, the campy-but-touching musical which hit Broadway in 2013 has delighted audiences around the world. The script is by Harvey Fierstein who enlisted his friend Cindy Lauper to write the songs. Its original run on Broadway was six years which is not too shabby, and it has toured the world since then. Most of us know it’s the story of Charlie, an uptight Brit who inherits a stodgy shoe factory from his father. After a chance meeting with a drag queen, they team up to re-tool the factory into making incredible boots in sizes and with strength to satisfy the most high-kicking queens. The show has just been released to community theatres, and predictably enough, Indio’s Desert Theatre Works has one of the first productions in Southern California. 11/3 – 26 (dtworks.org). INHERIT THE WIND: This classic American play has been around a long time but (sadly) it still has much relevance. It plays this month at Pasadena Playhouse It is based on an actual trial, known as “The Scopes Monkey Trial.” In 1925, John T. Scopes was convicted for teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution to a Tennessee high school class. In 1955, it was fictionalized into a play which includes characters with the names of the defendant and the attorneys, but the playwrights are quick to point out that they took wide liberties with the script and aren’t claiming historical accuracy. The obvious relevance is that Tennessee may soon have new trials for performers corrupting youth by donning drag gear, or Florida teachers for poisoning minds by exposing them to literature. Pasadena Playhouse, California’s State Theatre, produces consistently excellent productions, and I can’t wait to see this one. 11/1 - 26 (PasadenaPlayhouse.org).

Muxes of Mexico

Celebrating the Third Gender in Juchitán By Paco Ojeda

Photos courtesy of Secretaría de Cultura de la Ciudad de México

In the heart of southern Mexico, nestled within the vibrant state of Oaxaca in a town called Juchitán de Zaragoza, exists a unique and ancient community known as the Zapotec people. Amongst this indigenous society, a remarkable tradition has thrived for centuries—an acceptance and celebration of a third gender known as the Muxes. The Zapotec civilization traces its roots back over 2,500 years, making it one of Mesoamerica’s oldest cultures. In the midst of this rich history, the Muxes emerged as an essential thread woven into the tapestry of Zapotec life—legend has it that the Zapotec gods themselves blessed the people with Muxes, who were seen as intermediaries between the human and spiritual realms. The Zapotec, like many indigenous cultures, held a deeply spiritual and holistic view of gender. Within this worldview, individuals were not constrained by binary notions of male and female. Instead, they recognized a spectrum of gender expressions. This acceptance of gender fluidity laid the foundation for the emergence of the Muxes. Muxes are individuals who are assigned male at birth but who identify as feminine. The term “Muxe” is derived from the Zapotec word “muxhe,” which means “woman.” Muxes occupy a distinct and revered space within the Zapotec community. They may express their gender identity in a variety of ways, including through their clothing, hairstyle, and mannerisms. In more conventional terms, they may identify as heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. Muxes have a long and rich history in Zapotec culture. In pre-colonial times, muxes were respected members of society and played important roles in religious and cultural ceremonies. Today, muxes continue to play an important role in Juchitán society. They are often successful business owners, artists, and community leaders. One of the most important things to understand about muxes is that they are not simply gay men or cross-dressers. Muxes have a unique gender identity that is distinct from both men and women. Some are dedicated to domestic roles, caring for their families and households with a nurturing spirit. Others engage in artistic pursuits, becoming renowned weavers, embroiderers, or performers, gracing the stage with their mesmerizing dance. Yet, each Muxe’s identity is an individual and personal journey, shaped by their unique experiences and passions. 46 | GEDMAG.com

Throughout the year, the Zapotec community comes together to celebrate the Muxes. The pinnacle of these festivities is the “Vela de las Muxes,” an extravagant event in Juchitán. During this grand celebration, Muxes don vibrant Tehuana dresses, meticulously embroidered with colorful designs. Music fills the air, and the streets transform into a whirlwind of dancing, laughter, and joyful camaraderie. A beauty pageant, where Muxes showcase their grace and charisma, is the crowning moment of the celebration. Muxes are also highly respected in Juchitán society. They are often seen as wise and respected elders; and are also often called upon to mediate disputes and offer advice to others. But it hasn’t been easy. While Muxes enjoy broad acceptance within their Zapotec communities, the outside world can be less understanding. Discrimination and prejudice still persist, and Muxes may face challenges when they venture beyond their ancestral Oaxaca homeland. They may also have difficulty accessing healthcare, education, and other essential services. There is still no federal law in Mexico that explicitly protects trans people from discrimination. This means that muxes are often vulnerable to discrimination in employment, housing, and other areas. This juxtaposition between acceptance and the harsh realities of the broader society highlights their ongoing struggle for recognition and equal rights. Despite these challenges, the Muxes remain a shining example of cultural resilience. They represent the Zapotec people’s unwavering commitment to preserving their traditions and values, even in the face of modernity’s relentless tide.
