Kay Sedia

Mexico’s Spiciest Export By Alexander Rodriguez Kay Sedia is a Southern California gal, born in Hacienda Heights in the year… well, never mind. After playing the lead in the sixth grade Christmas play, Kay Sedia (also known as Oscar Quintero) was hooked on the spotlight. Kay Sedia was born when Oscar competed in Quest for the Crown drag pageant and placed runner-up. Only a week passed before she once again made an appearance on the stage at Drag Strip 66 and the Los Angeles area was never the same again. Aye aye aye!

They fall in love or want to grab a stick and hit me because they think I’m a piñata!

In addition to performing at clubs and appearing on screen (did you catch her on Real Housewives of Orange County and AJ and the Queen?), she is the Queen of Tupperware as one of the top-selling Tupperware personalities in the US and Canada. (Yes, she will come to your house for your own Tupperware party – just hide the silverware.)

Craziest drag story?

She has thrilled audiences as one of the stars and co-creators of the wildly popular performance trio Chico’s Angels (think Charlie’s Angels meets Three Stooges meets a telenovela). She has a personality as big as her hair and an accent as colorful as her blush. She was handpicked by Taco Bell for this year’s Pride season to perform in the company’s first-ever Drag Brunches around the nation. If that wasn’t enough, she has been performing her “juan woman cho” Taco Kisses, an evening of storytelling, songs, and surprise guests as she recounts her journey from the simple streets of Tijuana to becoming the high fashion, international actress and superstar that she is. We are elated to make Kay Sedia this month’s GED Drag Centerfold! Hometown: Tijuana! Via Hacienda Heights. How did you come up with your drag name? I competed in Quest for the Crown back in 2000, which was a spoof of the Miss Universe pageant! I was Miss Mexico Kay Sedia (Quesadilla) pronounced the way white people say it. I was the first runner-up… Robbed! Guilty pleasure? Tacos! But who am I kidding? There’s no guilt! Favorite part about doing drag? The shock factor! In my day-to-day life, I look like a truck driver lesbian so when I’m in drag I love the reaction people have.

Least favorite part about doing drag? The undergarments! I’m not at my ideal weight right now so it’s all uncomfortable! (Maybe I should be guilty about those tacos!)

I do drag queen Tupperware parties! I had a party in Wilmington way back in the day. Apparently, there had been a fight between neighbors that started the day before and it escalated during the Tupperware party, and somebody got shanked! Cops showed up and wouldn’t let me leave and they started interviewing me in drag! I just wanted to leave because I was performing at Dragstrip 66 that night! [Laughs] Most undrag thing you do? I have a five-year-old son and I’m the head of the fundraising committee at his preschool! Strangest hobby or talent? I collect watermelon tchotchkes, jewelry, and purses. It’s an obsession! I honestly think I need a 12-step program for it. [Laughs] Also, I’m obsessed with the Miss Universe pageant. I can tell you the winner of every year off the top of my head and in some cases, I can tell you the runners-up. Don’t judge me, Queen! What celebrity most needs a drag makeover? Mostly the politicians - Lindsey Graham for starters, Ted Cruz… but you know those queens would be ugly! Favorite nightlife hotspot? I know I’m gonna lose street cred for this. But SHE’s TIRED! Raising a five-year-old boy is exhausting. So, my favorite nightlife hotspot is my bed. Favorite non-profit? I have two - Aid For AIDS. I host their annual drag pageant benefit Best in Drag show! They help our brothers and sisters living with HIV and AIDS with basic necessities. Also, Corazon de Vida. GEDMAG.com | 9

It’s a fabulous organization that helps orphanages throughout Tijuana and Baja California. Favorite binge food? Where do I start? I’ve never met a tortilla chip I didn’t love! And I love me a good guacamole dip. What do Mexicans do better? Everything. Especially the food. Is it ok to eat beans on date night? You should wait on those beans until after the date ends. You don’t want to end the night before you have to. How much Taco Bell do you eat in real life? Honestly, that is my real guilty pleasure. I love Taco Bell. I love the quesadillas, I love their Chalupa tacos and I love their Nacho Bell Grande. I don’t think I’ve ever been unhappy at a Mexican restaurant… it’s impossible. What is the most unique type of Mexican food everyone should try at least once? Mole enchiladas for sure. What is the most overrated pop song? Do not come after me people, but, Britney Spears “Hit Me Baby One More Time” - I don’t get it, she can’t sing! Go-to cocktail? Virgin blended strawberry margarita! I’m underage. [Laughs] What would the name of your biography be? Starting Monday! A tale of procrastination and extreme laziness. Favorite song to perform? Yma Sumac: Malambo #1 What would the name of your biopic be? House Keeping! What is your after-drag ritual? Soaking in my jacuzzi because my feet are barking when I’m done. What’s your favorite pickup line? “Estop undressing me wif jur eyes! I am feeling violated. I like it.” Where can we find and follow you? @kaysedia1 on all platforms, on my website kaysedia.com and for all your Tupperware needs kaysedia.my.tupperware.com. GEDMAG.com | 11

Old Globe Theatre: San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre has long been one of my favorite haunts. They have three theatres: the mainstage which seats 580, a theatre-in-the-round seating 250, and an outdoor theatre which accommodates 620. The company’s mainstage has been the launch pad for many Broadway successes, and I have also sat through some great shows that were aimed for, but never made it to NYC. The common thread was that they were all excellent productions. Each summer, the outdoor theatre produces at least two Shakespearian productions with a quality that is recognized around the world. The shows are generally trimmed to around two hours, and the actors are phenomenal at making the Bard’s words sound conversational. They started this summer with The Taming of the Shrew. This month (through 9/4), they are presenting A Midsummer Night’s Dream, one of his most popular plays, and one that is pretty easily accessible to those of us who are not Elizabethan scholars. The theatre is nestled in the gigantic Balboa Park, which includes the zoo and numerous museums. I try to arrive early for good parking, and usually bring a picnic to enjoy in the park before the 8 p.m. production. This month they are also presenting Dial M for Murder, a classic suspense thriller, on their mainstage. My first reaction to the title is, “Oh, that tired old thing.” However, I have never been disappointed with anything this company has produced, and I’m pretty sure this production will be memorable. www.TheOldGlobe.org

THE PROM: Perhaps you caught Ryan Murphy’s film based on this musical a couple of years ago on Netflix, but there is still a great night out to be had by viewing it onstage, especially at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles’s Music Center. It is the story of four Broadway “actors” whose careers are marginal. They decide to travel to Indiana to help a lesbian student who has been barred from taking her girlfriend to the prom. Their initial motivation is to appear to be doing a good deed, thinking it might make them relevant back in New York, but they are so won over by the lesbian student that they take their mission seriously. Let’s just say that before the evening is over, you will see a lady in a tuxedo! Play 8/9 – 9/11 www.centertheatregroup.org OKLAHOMA! Well, okay. This warhorse turns 80 next year. Can it possibly have any relevance? This production, staged on Broadway in 2018 by Daniel Fish, is a whole new look at the American classic. Set in a school gym, the cast has been trimmed down to 12 people and the band features only seven musicians who play onstage as a country and western ensemble. The sound is definitely more bluegrass than Broadway, and there is diversity in casting that probably wasn’t present when The Indian Territories became the state of Oklahoma, an underlying theme of the show. Plays at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre 8/16 – 9/11, and Los Angeles’s Ahmanson Theatre 9/13 – 10/16.

THEATRICUM BOTANICUM: Will Geer, the actor most famous for playing the grandfather on The Waltons, owned a property in Topanga Canyon. Like many other actors, he was blacklisted from films by the McCarthy regime, and so he built an outdoor theatre on his property where he and other ousted performers could ply their craft. Today, his daughter Ellen administers the theatre and produces four or five shows each summer. It is called Theatricum Botanicum which translates as garden theatre, and this summer, like most summers, A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be one of their titles. This production typically encompasses the entire garden surrounding the theatre seats. They are also presenting The Merry Wives of Windsor, West Side Waltz, and Trouble the Water in reper16 | GEDMAG.com

SASSY MOVIE

With Alexander Rodriguez This is your Sassy Movie News brought to you by GED Magazine and On the Rocks' Alexander Rodriguez, Bringing you the sassiest and tipsiest top & bottom movie news. Here is the latest Hollywood tea... It was rumored that Johnny Depp might be coming back to the Pirates franchise for $300 million. His reps con firmed that this is NOT true and there is still no love lost between Depp and Disney. BUT, Depp is rumored (from good sources) to be making an appearance in Beetlejuice 2. What's scarier? Beetlejuice or the Heard trial? Sooo... James Bond IS coming back! Producers say that it will be a few years before we see anything new that is Bond related and that when Bond does come back, it will be wildly different than anything we have seen. Maybe a female Bond? Maybe a Bond robot? Cartoon Bond? With Hollywood, we know that nothing is too far-fetched. I just wanna see Henry Cavill or Tom Brady or Michael B Jordan as Bond... in those tight suits! Yaaasss! Despite JK Rowling's transphobic comments and refusal to apologize for said comments, Warner Bros is moving forward in full support of new Potter world material for TV and film. Bad Warner Bros! Geesh, maybe they should look at the box office for the last Fantastic Beasts ... ouch. Pick your heroes better Warner Bros! We will be seeing Kate Winslet like never before as it is reported that her character in Avatar 2 is full action hero. We've never seen Kate so active and bad ass ... and yet we still can't get over her not sharing that damn door with Leo. Mira Sorvino let it slip that they are closer than ever to a follow-up to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. Yaaassss! She and Lisa Kudrow have been showing up at appearances together and did a recreation of their reunion dance backstage at an awards function. We are all in for this sequel. "Do you have some sort of busi nesswomen's special?" Actor Henry Thomas, who played Elliot in E.T., said there will never be a sequel to the film. Their reunion for a cable commercial a few years back was as close as it's going to get. With everything going on in the world, I'm sure the aliens have better places to visit. Neve Campbell is NOT coming back to the Scream franchise for the 6th film. She got some media attention and co-star support when she refused to return to her role because the pay wasn't enough. Equal pay for female-led films is still not quite there yet and she is not giving in. You go, girl! Strangely, they are bringing back Hayden Panettiere, who portrayed Kirby in Scream 4. I hope she can get her shift covered at Arby's. Oid you love Michelle Yeah in Everything Everywhere All at Once? The sci-fi comedy was a huge box office, critical, and audience success. Unfortunately, the filmmakers The Daniels say that any talk of a sequel is just a 1big joke. I loved the film, but couldn't get past the hot dog fingers. Where are the buns? Final Destination is coming back for a 6th installment! Producers say that they are changing up the formula and shaking things up. Um, how can you change the formula? Maybe instead of people suffering horrible deaths from bad luck circumstances, they just get canceled for politically incorrect tweets one after the other. Is hottie Taran Egerton the new Wolverine? He confirmed that he met with Marvel and even hinted that it could have been about the Wolverine reboot. Taran, muscly and hairy? Y ES PLEASE! Talk about your XXX Men! That is our Sassy Movie News -- Check out our weekly movie news sound bites on CHANNEL Q and online at GEDmag.com. See you at the movies! 18 | GEDMAG.com

Rob Anderson TikTok’s Viral Heart Throb By Alexander Rodriguez

When COVID hit, Rob Anderson started sharing his woes and personal foibles on social media in his what was to become signature style. His TikTok videos went viral, and he quickly became a fan favorite. Fast forward to current day where Rob is now a bona fide sponsored influencer with 2.5 million followers and growing, a comedian who is selling out his first national tour, a best-selling children’s book author (with his colorful retelling of Fergie’s National Anthem performance), the solo artist behind this year’s Pride bop “Nothing For You,” a favorite gay among mainstream media with appearances on NPR and Good America among others, the mastermind behind the funny if bordering on politically incorrect Gay Science series, the voice of Postmate’s Pride campaign for bottom friendly food choices, the Academy Awards’ social media sweetheart, and Instagram thirst trap. Phew, that list is long. His sarcastic and dry sense of humor and masterfully constructed viral videos elicit guffaws at the same time they encourage you to think a bit and challenge stereotypes by presenting them as norms. Beyond those muscles and that bigger-than-life-on-screen personality is a gentle giant who, at the end of the day, loves what he does and hopes you do too…and if you don’t, who cares? His journey to influencer stardom did not happen overnight. As both a class clown and theatre groupie, he was a troublemaker at school - getting suspended for challenging the rules. He moved to Chicago and studied improv, found his tribe of funny people, nonchalantly came out, and got his first industry job as…a construction journalist? Jobs were scarce and he was in a bit of a rough spot. Writing about construction jobs was not his passion, not even the guys in hardhats could keep his focus. From there he would become a marketing department’s secret weapon, all the while honing his skills for his time in the social media spotlight. I was doing creative campaigns for Grindr and Uber and The Infatuation, my most recent job. And so, I’ve always had this sort of sense of humor in how I market things. And I had to start TikTok for my last job and I realized it was so much fun. I was making videos go viral for them and I thought - I should just do this on my own. I started to and, right as the pandemic hit, so it was kind of like the perfect storm. When straight comedians and mainstream people in the business started to share and comment on his videos, he started to realize that his brand was starting to go viral. It wasn’t just for the gays; everybody was having a laugh. Rob’s headlines would soon start with the word “influencer,” but what does that mean to him? I think of influencers as people that started to make their own paths with the recent technologies and new algorithms of these platforms. I think of it very broadly. I don’t know if I necessarily always refer to myself as an influencer. Sometimes I just say I’m a TikToker. I don’t really know; I have to still figure it out. I think it’s a very broad term for people that use the internet in a way to make themselves their own bosses. GEDMAG.com | 27

With the influencer world including such personalities as the Kardashians to comedians like Rob to hard-hitting LGBTQ activists, there has been a love/hate relationship that has been cultivated by content audiences. Where media can stereotype some influencers with an eye roll as a self-absorbed, filtered selfie-taking, free product-getting, and sometimes unskilled money maker, there are influencers who, like Rob, share their life stories and personal outlook on social and political themes with a comedic flair that truly progress the LGBTQ image within mainstream media and even to that kid in the closet in some small town in the middle of nowhere. No matter one’s view on influencers, they are getting the likes, they are getting the subscribers, and they are getting those sponsorships. They are building an empire. With this tug of war of the idolization of influencers and their place in media comes a different type of pressure on content creators where mental fatigue, depression, and anxiety can manifest themselves. Rob’s life experiences and career ups and downs give him a particular insight into the mental health aspect of being an influencer.

then I’m making light of stereotypes. So, I’m not reinforcing them, but also playing with the parts that could be true, because sometimes there’s a truth in them and then ending it with a positive message. Like it is some genetic superiority that queer people have and that’s why we have a lisp, that’s why we sit this way. We’ve genetically always been better and that’s always how I end things. So, they end on a positive note.

Mental fatigue is real. I’m 34 and have had my own issues with it, but I think about young kids who are 17-20 and this is all happening for them, it must be much harder. If they haven’t lived experience of adult bullying in some way, they don’t have that thing that lets them dismiss things like maybe someone in their 30s or 40s or older might. So, I really feel for them in those mental health issues. Creating content during the pandemic, I had this break from the awfulness of what was happening in 2020 and this light where I got to make things. But on the flip side, I didn’t have real life to balance out internet comments. The internet comments were our reality. It was particularly hard during 2020.

As Rob’s videos continued to garner clicks and comments, the sponsors started circling the waters. While most times incorporating brands or products with the LGBTQ community in mind, and while always presenting his signature comedy, he is now a business. When every Pride season comes around, so to does the attack on corporations who change their logos to the Pride flag or who release a limited edition of their products with a pride sticker. With Rob’s experience creating marketing campaigns for corporations, but also as a member of the gay community, what is his take on corporate pride?

Rob’s Gay Science has garnered a lot of attention and clicks on the series increase by the day. Rob tackles extremely important, hard-hitting topics affecting gay men today. Topics surrounding why gay men love iced coffee so much, the extinction of versatile bottoms, why gay men can’t sit in a chair properly, and an expose on Disney gays make up this tongue-in-cheek comment on the absurdity of gay stereotypes. But hey, stereotypes come from somewhere, don’t they? While the series is extremely funny, it gives us a chance to add some humor to today’s political and social unrest that not only lies between us and the conservative political groups but also the unrest that exists within our circle. Rob certainly dances on the fine line between comedic commentary and political correctness. With everyone on edge and keyboard warriors constantly ready for battle, is Rob ever scared of being canceled? I found a sort of sweet spot in Gay Science. Whereas maybe some of the videos I was making before Gay Science were crossing the line, not crossing the line, maybe being too mean, maybe not being mean enough, or not as critical, with Gay Science, it’s a very protected series because I’m taking things that people have already talked about sometimes for years about a stereotype. I’m not inventing anything, they’re pretty well known or joked about, and

Rob made his debut as both a songwriter and singer for his summer bop, “Nothing for You.” The song and the music video represent the perfect mashup of his comedy, his theatre background, his shirtless chest, his musicality, and, of course, his biting commentary. You move to the beat, you sing along to the hook until you realize that the song is about giving up your basic rights, forgetting equality, and throwing activism out the window for someone who is super-hot. All those gays with crushes on the straight Republican politicians? This one’s for you.

I think there are a lot of different takes on it. I feel like there is some validity in a lot of what people say. My thought is that if we, as the community, can use what they are giving us, whether it’s attention, money, or publicity, for our betterment, there has to be some kind of relationship there. It has to help us in some way as well as it’s helping them make money and promote their own businesses. So as long as there’s some equity there, it’s up to us to choose the things that we think are worth it. Remember those fake Skymall magazines in Ubers during April Fool’s Day? That was Rob’s idea. And even with his extensive work in marketing and success as a marketing whiz, he maintains that there is no clear-cut way to gain viral fame. There are definitely some tricks that you can learn about getting people excited at the start and hopping onto trends. But you have to remember that not everything’s going to do well, and you have to have fun and be honest with what you’re trying to do and not try to play into what people want, and just accept that some things are going to fail on the internet, even though you really like it. I noticed that a lot of the things that I do that are specifically for queer people that straight people would not get or understand, they don’t necessarily do as well on these big platforms, but I’m okay with that because it’s something that I want to do, and some people will get it. GEDMAG.com | 29

And his creative process? I have multiple documents on my desktop and on my phone, and I like to listen to music, I get inspired. And I think of dumb things during, I’m like this song makes me feel like this story is happening. But I’ll have things sit on my phone for a while and then I’ll add to them. Sometimes it’ll be 2, 3, 4 weeks before I think it’s ready. Then I’ll put it together and that’s sort of how a lot of these things form. I’ll also have ideas for sketches that have so many elements to them where I need to make fake props, order a bunch of fake things, and design a bunch of stuff, and those things can take weeks to come in. I did a Gay Science episode on bottoms surviving the apocalypse and I created over a hundred original props for that video. And that took like three months to come in. So, when that came up, I was so excited to get that out there. Rob’s comedy and personality are a breath of fresh air in this climate of tragic activism. Yes, our community is going through a lot, and yes, we need to fight, but, if we can’t enjoy the humor in anything then we really can’t be mentally healthy enough to wade out the opposition. Plus, if the mainstream is paying attention to Rob’s content that does not attack but rather elicits a smile, isn’t that a powerful tool as well? You can check out Rob’s comedy in person for his first outing on live stages in five years. Touring the country, Rob Anderson Live is about gay sex. It’s over an hour of original music, sketches, and a collection of explicit personal stories that aren’t appropriate for the internet. God help us, Rob is now going viral in person. You can check out everything Rob at HeartthRobAnderson.com. 30 | GEDMAG.com

Who needs chicken and waffles when you can start your day with crispy seitan and gooey maple syrup over waffles served with a side of seasonal fruit? Dinner items include the signature buffalo cauliflower with curried, roasted florets doused in spicy buffalo sauce with a “creamy” ranch dressing. There are now two Impossible burgers on the menu but opt instead for a build-yourown bowl with protein options like braised jackfruit, marinated tempeh, and almond tuna, among others; a choice of grains or legumes including soba noodles or lentils; and veggies that include grilled plantains, roasted mushrooms, sea vegetables, or steamed spinach. Breakfast is served all day! 414 N. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048, 310-289-9910 899 E. Del Mar Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91106, 626-844-8900 realfood.com GEDMAG.com | 35

Moulin Rouge

Delivers High-Octane Entertainment and Full-throttle Spectacle Escapism By Steve Gottfried

After two and a half years of abstaining from everything from indoor dining to the occasional random hookup, I had reached my limit. And the prospect of missing out on a chance to see Moulin Rouge was my kryptonite. As Dolly Levi triumphantly resolves to rejoin the human race in “Before the Parade Passes By,” I too was determined to throw caution to the wind, consequences be damned. And so, I ventured into the Art Deco grandeur of the Pantages Theatre in the heart of Hollywood surrounded by a throng of masked theatergoers, pumped for opening night of the touring company of the Tony Award winning musical based on the Baz Lurhmann movie spectacle from 2001 which starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The question running through my head: will experiencing the kinetic thrill of live theater be worth the risk for a neurotically risk-averse person like myself? I suppose I won’t know the full answer to that question until the incubation period passes and I remain symptom and/or COVID-free. What I can say at this very moment, the morning after, is that the opening night performance was everything I had hoped for and like Dolly’s magical return to the Harmonia Gardens, it was “so good to be back where I belong.”

From the moment you enter the theater, the lush set design recreates the ambience reminiscent of turn of the century Paris. The show starts off with a high-octane performance of “Lady Marmalade” and quickly casts its spell conjuring the enchanting world of this cabaret and its cast of Bohemian artists. The caliber of the performances were Broadway-worthy and while this innately anachronistic jukebox musical based on the Baz Luhrmann fantastical spectacle may not be everyone’s cup of tea, this production was firing on all cylinders. For me, the true revelation of this musical was its leading man Conor Ryan who imbues the role of Christian with just the right combination of heart and whimsy that makes the character believable and sympathetic. From the moment he appears on stage to welcome the audience and explain the stakes of the evening involve matters of life, love, and death, he does it with such an endearing and authentic yet vulnerable quality reminiscent of a young hapless Owen Wilson that it’s impossible not to be taken in. It is particularly rewarding when it comes to the musical numbers, Ryan’s vocals are no less remarkable, sweet and pristine when called GEDMAG.com | 37

for in Elton John’s “Your Song” and aching and anthemic during songs like “Crazy” and “Roxanne,” singing whatever pastiche of songs the show throws his way with conviction and seeming ease. Yes, he’s that good. While I didn’t have the chance to see Aaron Tveit’s Tony winning performance as Christian in the Broadway production, Ryan brings a magic to the role that is all his own. While the rest of the company were equally up to the task, Christian is the beating heart of the show which requires the audience to buy in to the conceit and transport us into a world where love is quite literally a matter of life and death. The other two standouts were of course the tragic heroine Satine played impeccably by Courtney Reed and the manipulative impresario Harold Zidler played with gusto and zeal by Austin Durant. Reed traverses the full range of emotion as the starlet/vixen suspended from a chair singing “Diamonds are Forever” to the tragic songbird whose artistry is being straightjacketed by her controlling benefactor. David Harris delivers a solid performance as the Duke of Monroth, the moneyed villain who – like the phantom of the Opera – threatens to undermine the fate of the star-crossed lovers (Satine and Christian), demanding Satine’s heart in return for

keeping the theater and the lives of its artists afloat. Like Phantom of the Opera, the story of Moulin Rouge is fairly simple to follow adhering to the trajectory of a classic tragic opera while creating the necessary stakes of suspense that allow the cascade of musical numbers to envelop and enthrall. And in this company’s hands, it all works exceedingly well. The one criticism I had was that I was expecting more from the choreography which was created by Sonya Tayeh, a breakout choreographer on the Fox competition So You Think You Can Dance, known for her daring and often boundary-pushing routines. Though the dancing was well-executed, there was nothing groundbreaking or spectacular about it. Fortunately, the story, the music and the performers brought so much to this production that the choreographic shortcomings were a mere footnote. The unifying thread of Moulin Rouge and the need to fight for the four essential elements of the Bohemian spirit – Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love – couldn’t be more appropriate at this particular moment in time. Given the chance, would I see it again? In a heartbeat. Now through September 4th at The Pantages Theatre (6233 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA).
